Shah Rukh Khan wrote a heartfelt message, saying that Om Puri’s demise was because “God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best.” He also wrote, “Will miss ur laughter over the shared brandy in Berlin. Will miss u lots Omji. RIP.”
Amitabh Bachchan also tweeted pictures with the late actor and wrote, “Shocked to learn of OM PURI Ji’s passing just now.. a dear friend a lovable colleague and an exceptional talent .. in grief !”
Priyanka Chopra wrote that the legacy of Om Puri’s powerful films will continue to live on, “The end of an era …. The legacy lives on.. RIP #OmPuri.”
Madhuri Dixit wrote, “Saddened to hear that the fabulous actor #OmPuriji passed away. Loved him in Ardh Satya many more. RIP.”
Puri’s “Delhi-6” co-stars Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor also mourned the loss of a great talent.
Abhishek wrote, “Very saddened by the news of Om Puri jis passing. Worked with him on many films and learnt so much from him. Immense talent. #RIPOmPuri,” while Sonam reminisced, “I remember driving with him every morning to set listening to old Hindi music during delhi6, So sorry to hear to hear of his passing #Ompuri.”
Akshay Kumar expressed his condolences to the family, “Sad to hear about the passing away of the very talented Om Puri, my co-actor in many films…heartfelt condolences to the family. #RIP”
While Alia Bhatt wrote, “Deeply saddened to hear about #OmPuri sir! He was such a huge part of the core of Indian cinema..RIP ! Truly an end of an era,”
Anushka Sharma echoed a similar sentiment when she wrote, “#OmPuri’s talent and versatility has brought so many characters to life. An inspiration to many actors. May his soul rest in peace.”
Om Puri’s death was condoled even across the border, by Pakistani actor and singer Ali Zafar.

Amongst the foursome Sanjana has listed, talent-wise he remains my most favourite as his repertoire is the widest imo as he could switch from intense to comic roles with the same ease. Life is too unpredictable, so live it to the fullest as nobody knows when it’s going to stop ticking!!

More than foul play its the sadness of lonely death which Anupam Kher has talked about to India Today. It seems his family including his wife & son abandoned him.

“A month ago, actor Salman Khan called me from Kullu, where he was shooting for a movie with Om. “Please ask Puri saab to get into shape and not waste himself. He still has many years ahead of him,” Salman told me and gave the phone to Om. I earnestly advised Om to start working on himself once he was back in Mumbai.
When I went to their house after hearing the news this morning, I found his son Ishaan quietly standing there. I told him, “Your father was one of the greatest actors and a wonderful human being.”
He looked a bit lost. “Really? You think so?”I said yes.
He suddenly hugged me and said, “Thank you for saying this.”
What I particularly feel terrible about is that Om had a lonely death. He died alone, with nobody at home.
The secretary of his Versova housing society told me that Om returned past midnight last night. They had a brief, pleasant conversation. The secretary requested him to take more care of his health.
To this, almost like an eerie premonition, Om said: “Zyada se zyada kya hoga? Zindagi nahin rahegi. Mera kaam toh zinda rahega (what could happen at worst… I’ll be no more… my work
will live forever).”

Driver found Om Puri lying on the floor, bleeding

“….Sources said, “At around 7 am, when Puri’s driver reached his third-floor residence and rang the bell, there was no response. He got suspicious and raised an alarm. Puri’s neighbours gathered and managed to get duplicate keys to enter his home. Upon opening the door, they found Puri lying on the ground near his kitchen, bleeding from his head.” The driver, Puri’s wife Nandita and a few of his neighbours from the Oakland Park building then rushed him to the Cooper Hospital.
A doctor from the hospital said, “The post mortem of the actor was conducted late in the afternoon. The required samples to understand exact cause of death have been taken and they will be studied at the Kalina forensic lab. The primary cause of death is a heart attack. There was an injury on the left side of his head, which suggests that after suffering the heart attack, he fell to the ground.”

Naseeruddin Shah: Om Puri was suffering in his last years, sorry I wasn’t at his funeral
Naseeruddin Shah, who was a contemporary and close friend of Om Puri, shared his thoughts about the demise of the veteran actor.
Om Puri was Naseeruddin Shah’s batchmate at the National School of Drama (NSD). Later, Om joined the acting course at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) where Naseer was Om’s senior. Both actors began their acting career in the ’80s, starring in stellar art-house films, collaborating with the same filmmakers more or less; Govind Nihalani, Goutam Ghose, Sai Paranjpye and Ketan Mehta. As such, the one actor who would be spoken of in the same breath as Om Puri, always, was and still is Naseeruddin Shah.
Naseer recently opened up on his feelings about Om Puri and his sad demise on January 6. He spoke of his admiration for Om’s talent and how sometimes, some roles which he thought were meant for him went to Om. But he added that he never felt resentful towards Om. He only felt joy.
“His success in the West and when he spoke to me about working with Tom Hanks or Steven Spielberg, filled me only with happiness. Om was the salt of the earth. There’s no other way to describe him. He remained real and rooted all his life. Success or failure didn’t change him. There was not a pretentious or pompous bone in his body,” Naseer told DNA.
However, Naseeruddin added that Om’s personal problems near the end of his life “left his mental and physical health in shambles”. Om had a troubled marriage with his second wife, Nandita Puri. While Om alleged that Nandita tarnished his image by writing intimate details about him in the book Unlikely Hero: Om Puri, Nandita filed a case of domestic violence against her husband, which she later withdrew. Om and Nandita began living separately as well and according to reports, Nandita kept badgering Om to get a share of his property.
“I know for a fact that Om was really suffering during the last few years. And there was no way out of it. Though his death was sudden, I can’t say it was totally unexpected. In a way, death has relieved him of all the stress, and that includes the bad films he took on, I presume for financial reasons. Om took all the criticism on his chin,” said Naseeruddin Shah.
Naseer also shared a funny incident regarding Om – about the time Om pranked him by mimicking Amrish Puri.
“One of Om’s specialties was mimicking Amrishji’s baritone. He would call me up pretending to be Amrish Puri and speak in Amrish’s voice. I’d be completely taken in. He would then say, ‘Arrey b**c**d, main hoon’,” said Naseeruddin.
Naseeruddin added that he felt sorry for not being able to attend his friend’s funeral. He signed off saying, “Hell, I am going to miss Om!”

If someone asks me to list 10 best moments of Hindi cinema, I will be utterly confused between Nahari’s confession in Gandhi, and this moment, from Ardh Satya. Velankar’s experience became my experience.
The climax, in Ardh Satya, is one of the finest we have seen in Hindi cinema. Not because of its cinematic treatment, but the nuanced, controlled and economical acting from Om Puri. When he says “… kya mein tera kutta ban jaaon…. Tera goo khaoon…,” I actually felt as if there was shit all over me.
Until, I came upon Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron.
The beauty of the scene is that the actor has no crutches. There is an empty road, a coffin and a corpse. He doesn’t depend on any external help, he is drunk and having a good time, indifferent to the entire world, and you feel so. Members of film organisations CINTAA, IFTDA and IMPPA will come together on Thursday to celebrate the life and work of late veteran actor Om Puri here.
The event will take place at the ISKCON Auditorium in Juhu, says Amit Behl, Joint Secretary of CINTAA (Cine and Television Artistes’ Association), of which Om Puri was the President.
Behl told IANS: “There has been too much grief around Om Puri’s death, and a lot of people have paid tributes to him. But Om Puri is a magnum opus who should be celebrated.”
Talking about the event, Behl said: “As President of CINTAA, he never let us feel he is ‘The Om Puri’. He is an eternal inspiration to us. At CINTAA, when we discussed this internally, everyone including Manoj Joshi, Deepak Qazir and Suneel Sinha, who are part of our core committee, unanimously felt that we should celebrate his life.”
“Ashoke Pandit ji and Ashwini Choudhary of IMPPA and IFTDA were more than happy in joining us. Zama Habib and others from the Writers’ Association will also be speaking on Om Puri ji during the evening,” Behl added.
The veteran actor passed away on January 6.
Two of his films “The Ghazi Attack” and “Viceroy’s House” are releasing in February and March respectively. He was also shooting for Salman Khan’s upcoming film “Tubelight”.
Behl, who would like to remember Om Puri for his smiling face, lovely bear hug, his down-to-earth nature and his realistic performances in films, said: “Om ji had been our President and was trained by the same Guru who trained Sushant Singh and myself. He is a role model for 90 per cent serious actors in this country. And he left this industry on a high with over four films awaiting release.”
“He was truly a global performer.”
On the Indian turf, the two-time National Film Award winner gave memorable performances in films like “Ardh Satya”, “Mirch Masala”, “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro”, “Chachi 420”, “Hera Pheri”, “Malamaal Weekly” and more.
Om Puri’s international career took off as early as 1982 when he featured in a small role in Oscar-winning film “Gandhi”.
It also set the stage for him to explore more on foreign shores — his British films were “My Son the Fanatic”, “East Is East” and “The Parole Officer”, and his Hollywood movies included “City of Joy”, “Wolf”, “The Ghost and the Darkness” and “The Hundred-Foot Journey”.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee believes that nobody can play Om Puri better than him if a biopic on the late actor is ever made.
“I think nobody can play Om-ji better than me because I knew him very closely. I came for his prayer meet but still I am smiling because if you remember him, you can’t be upset. He was such a joyful character. I remember him with loads of happiness,” Manoj said here at a meet to pay tribute to Om Puri who died on January 6.
Bajpayee, who is often regarded as a method actor and known for his unconventional roles in films, said: “Om Puri ji was one of the reasons for doing the kind of acting I am known for. He helped us to conceive the dream… Those who come from small towns. He showed us that path and achieved the top (success) which we dreamt of.”
“His behaviour was same and even with everybody, whether the person was a spot boy or a millionaire,” Manoj recalled.
Asked whether the late actor had seen Manoj’s last film “Aligarh”, he said: “No, he didn’t. But I have no regret about it because he always talked about ‘Aligarh’ and ‘Budhia Singh’ to everybody. He was so busy socially that couldn’t make time.”
Manoj said he was always inspired by Om Puri.
He said: “After I watched his film ‘Aakrosh’, I decided if I have to do work, it has to be like this. The path I chose in films is because of Om Puri.
“People say if you have to be a good actor, you have to be a good human being first. Whenever I lost faith in this saying, I met Om Puri and my faith regained.”
