The Telugu film Khaidi No.150 took an unbelievable bumper opening on Wednesday. The collections were the eighth highest of all time in India and it was the third highest opening ever for a South Indian film. The opening at an all India level was a bit better than Dangal which released a few weeks back. If we look at the top fifteen openers for all Indian films then it is mainly dominated by Hindi films but there are five films from the South in then list. Four Telugu films and the biggest South opener ever Kabali which is a Tamil film. Khaidi No.150 features Telugu superstar who made a few films in Hindi including Pratibandh 1990 (Mumbai HIT), Aaj Ka Goondaraj 1992 (Plus Fare) and The Gentleman 1994 (Flop). Below are the top fifteen opening day grossers in India. The list includes all films released in India and all figures are GROSS (this is because there are different taxes and while Hindi film variance between NETT and GROSS will be 1-3%, it is much more when compared with South films due to lower taxes). Also all languages included for all films.

Ok Jaanu the first major release of the year managed fair opening collections of around 25% at multiplexes which is not bad for this film which does not have much face value especially in terms of the male lead.the fact that it is a new release after a pretty long time may have helped. The opening is far better than the last starrer of Shraddha Kapoor which was Rock On 2 and also much better than Aditya Roy Kapoor’s last film which was Fitoor and also featured a heroine like Katrina Kaif. The best opening for the film is in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore though screenings in Bangalore are affected by South Indian releases. Generally South India will be huge affected by the local releases.

Despite the ok start for the film it is still about growth as eventually these type of films need a trend to survive. Also the Hollywood release XXX – Return Of Xander Cage featuring Deepika Padukone will release later and that could affect collections. Xander has one of the weirdest releases in that there are paid previews on Friday evening and the full release is on Saturday. This film will be heavily affected by the big South Indian releases as had potential to do good business there.

The Saturday release could also make big growth harder to come by for Ok Jaanu as the film have less shows on Saturday to accomodate the Hollywood release. If Xander takes a start than that would make it even harder

  4. Premam girl Sai Pallavi to debut in Tamil alongside Vikram

New details have emerged on Chiyaan Vikram’s upcoming movie, which will be directed by Vijay Chander. According to industry sources, the filmmakers have roped in Sai Pallavi to play the female lead in the yet-to-be-titled project.
Sai Pallavi shot to fame with her performance in Malayalam film Premam, in which she played the role of a young and charming teacher called Malare. Later, she was paired opposite Dulquer Salmaan in Kali this year. The Vikram-starrer will mark her debut in Tamil as a lead female actor. The official announcement of her inclusion in the star cast is expected to me made soon, along with the details of the remaining cast and crew.
Meanwhile, the reports suggested that the film that will go on the floors in January will be completed in a single stretch of 45-50 days of shooting. Vikram, who was last seen in a sci-fi thriller, will be seen an action film set in the north Chennai background. He will also sport a new look for the film. The actor delivered one of Kollywood’s biggest box office blockbusters this year, Iru Mugan. The untitled film will be directed by Vijay, who made his directorial debut last year with Vaalu starring Simbu and it will be produced under SFF banner.
Earlier, speculations were rife that Vikram was preparing to reprise Stephen Lang’s role in the Tamil remake of Hollywood film, Don’t Breathe. However, the project was delayed as the Kollywood filmmakers are yet to acquire the rights for the Tamil remake.
Besides Vijay’s film, Vikram has also given a nod to a few exciting new projects, including director Hari’s sequel to his 2003 blockbuster Saamy. The film will retain the main star cast from the original, including Trisha. And the actor has also been tapped for director Gautham Menon’s much-delayed project Dhruva Natchathiram.

This is a fanboy article. and calling Lagaan and RDB non commercial films is a joke. Aamir Khan is one of the all time greats in the history of Indian cinema BUT he is not a typical all time great. There has never truly been a star like him so it’s hard to position him in the big picture. One thing is for sure though…..he is on his way to being a legend and that is a term that is truly something really really special.

      • yes he is in his own league and it is futile to compare him or anyone else with anybody else…..in last 2 decades what he has done to Indian Cinema – no one else has…..there are big names who may have done wonders down South at the BO – but I would mention Mohanlal even ahead of Rajni and Kamal when it comes to the quality of the cinema and at the same time BO results….that man has a vast reporterie of cinema to his name

      • Amir taking anybody like Amitabh or other Khans is a joke in itself. Dangal is his 14th hit in the career span of 27 years which isn’t enough achievement to put somebody in the league of Bachchan. Yes, he has delivered 3 all time grossers in last few years but that is like Sehwag having three triple centuries and Sachin having none. By this logic Sehwag should be ahead of Sachin but its not like that. He can’t compete even with Akshay Kumar if volume of hits is taken into consideration. For this he himself is responsible by doing less films. But quality wise on can agree that nobody comes close to Amir.

Hate him or love him, this critic’s got a good sense of humour for sure:

”Devgn, we learn, is a filmmaker who enjoys making jokes about the divinity of his own genitalia. Perhaps at the way this film is shot in Bulgaria but pretends it’s on Everest, which leads us to Devgn turning to a Bulgarian girl at a Bulgarian mountain and chest-thumpingly asking her if they have views like this in Bulgaria”

”Played by Pooja Hegde, Chaani is an insipid heroine, one who wears the exact same caught-in-the-headlights expression when a) a horse bears down on her, b) when Hrithik moves in to kiss her, and c) when she’s being choked.”

”It is a film that thinks it knows better, but really — really — doesn’t. This is a film without breasts that desperately wants to burn a bra.”

”Rai ages with caricatured speed, both hair and skin turning grey by the scene, and her Punjabi accent fluctuates violently, from basic swallowing of vowels to hardcore chest-thumping consonant-stretching (“Srubjittttttt-uh”).”

”People age oddly in Fitoor. A small Kashmiri boy with innocent eyes and a Saleem Sinai nose becomes a natural artist, but, as if working with unreasonably heavy paintbrushes, emerges also a musclebound dimwit.”

”A haughty young girl with a National Velvet self-confidence morphs into a red-haired waxwork unable to pronounce words that came so naturally in her youth.”

  7. While both Devgn and Kajol have refrained from commenting, a source close to Devgn hit back. “Karan is doing this just to sell his book. The whole industry knows that Karan bitches about people behind their back. Even Shah Rukh Khan was upset with Karan because of his comments against Priyanka Chopra. Two years ago at a party, Karan indulged in really loose talk about Kajol in front of an A-list actor. That actor, in turn, told Ajay Devgn about it. Ajay even asked that actor why, despite being Karan’s friend, is he telling him about it. The actor said that if Karan could badmouth Kajol in front of him, he could also gossip about him someday. Ajay was obviously furious – any man would be if his wife was talked about in such light. So he called Karan and abused him on the phone. He told Karan that ‘you can say what you wish about my film but don’t talk about my wife and family.’”

The source, choosing to remain anonymous, adds, “This issue is two years old. Much before the clash between Karan’s film (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) and Ajay’s film (Shivaay) happened. The fact that it is being discussed now, and so is Karan’s sexual orientation, is clearly to remain in news to sell his book. He can do whatever he wishes, but he can’t make a villain out of Ajay Devgn in that process. This is just playing dirty.”

    • I am quite confident this story is true and reason for my belief is because I know some people who got very ill treatment by Karan. Karan is like “Messa” (Punjabi word) .. means from inside his colors are completely different.

So there was reason behind that tweet of Kajol , she already was broken up with Karan … it was just that she displayed it publically first time. And Karan is trying to show as if he is not aware what’s going on.

And based on experiences of some people with Karan, i will not be surprised if Karan has actually got some deal with KRK. The guys i am talking about are you tube reactors who got their first copyright strike by Karan Johar when they reviewed ADHM promo .. and reason they got copyright strike was because those guys overpraised Shivaay which Karan didn’t like. Copyright strike is serious threat and their channel can get down if they get two more such strikes. Despite appeal from thousands of people who are fan of their channel and even channel owners personally contacted Karan, he refuse to remove that strike. This is very rude and shows how Karan is not that good person in real.

Ok Jaanu had a pretty fair start in the morning but did not go through with the collections in the evening as it collected around 3.75-4 crore nett. The probable reason for this is the release of XXX – Return Of Zander Cage in the evening or the fact the film is only really for youth as it deals with a love in relationship so the evening audience does not really come for it. The collections are still better than films like Rock On 2 and Fitoor but it looked a total of around 4.50 crore nett in the morning. The film was best in the premium multiplexes of Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore while Delhi NCR could have been better and also East Punjab.

Hollywood release XXX – Return Of Xander Cage featuring Deepika Padukone released later in the evening post 6pm and managed a decent collection of around 1.75 crore nett from the paid previews. The looks a better bet than Ok Jaanu at least for the weekend but even this will depend on what happens on Monday and it could be tough to sustain. The South had its own big films so including the huge Khaidi No.150 which took an extraordinary start of over 40 crore gross box office on day on

I am pretty sure, much like the film Azhar, robust attempts would be made to white-wash Sanjay’s ‘sins.’ There is a ridiculous amount of conflict of interests here. This is almost like Jaya Bhaduri directing a film on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s affair.

    • And there-in, lies my vindication that DDLJ was a poor cousin and a huge inspiration from HAHK. I have been saying this for years, but SRK and KJo fans would attack me with claws – but the ‘root’ of all chacha-chachi dances and all familial afflictions go way back to HAHK. It is no co-incidence that HAHK released in ’94 and DDLJ in ’95.

In DDLJ, the romance that was hinted at in HAHK between SK and MD was fully-blown into a wall-painting. The root, always lay with HAHK. It is just that Sooraj focused more on the familial aspects while KJo stole form Sooraj the romantic aspect of SK and MD and wove a family around it with ‘Indian’ values.

Now, KJo himself admits to it. Go figure.

The problem is, with Karan, he STILL tries to ‘project’ that experience through his films like the fatal MNIK where he tries to explain ‘xenophobia.’ No Sir, you wouldn’t know what it is to explain to some-one at a bar after 12 years in the US that one learned English alphabets not AFTER but before coming to US.

All we want is one to be truthful to one’s sensibilities and emotions – and that, you have never been.

It is identical copy of OK Kanmani. Almost every situation is there in same sequence. What is missing, is the lack of decent acting by leads. The Tamil version was light but there was spontaneity which was natural. I thought barring few times the chemistry was fake in OK Jaanu. Nasser was abrupt in starting but he was good after sometime. But I will still prefer Prakash Raj portrayal.

This whole gang of Farah, SRK, Karan etc has disintegrated to an extent. I think that’s primarily because SRK is quite opportunistic, while the others were too sentimental and emotional about him. SRK is concerned about his career, and Kajol is concerned about her marriage. No one comes close, and no one really matters. When SRK had a fall out with Farah, he said he doesn’t think about people he is not working with. They disappear from their lives.

At the same time, by Karan’s own admission, SRK got upset about the director working without him. This shows the kind of person SRK is. SRK can work with every other director, but Karan should only work with him? And as soon as he saw Karan was getting friendly wiht other stars and also working with them, SRK stopped caring about Karan altogether. What kind of rubbish friendship is this!

SRK got quite upset with Adi Chopra too for casting Ranveer, and was taking digs at the newcomer. SRK is no longer the same superstar, his fortunes have dwindled. He’s 50 plus and cannot possibly carry off lover boy roles, and we know both Johar and Chopra only make love stories. So what can be done. They are going to move on to other stars. SRK will redeem himself somewhat if Raees works. If it doesn’t then, he will sink further and even Johar may not bother too much about SRK -the sulk pot.

these “fraternity” people are actually the very definition of frivolousness and shallowness.i dont think anyone would look up to them for life lessons.

frankly SRK should have carved a different path for himself when he was at his peak instead of relying too much on the Adi n Johar brand of cinema. But one cannot blame him too much for the same as his script sense often fails him outside of the loverboy/family guy image he has portrayed and seen major success in.

      Liked by 1 person

    • After CDI there was a window of opportunity to stamp his authority. I don’t blame him for doing MNIK or RNBDJ cos at least there was something more than lover boy image and doing your fourth/third film with 2 industry heavyweights who have given you 4 clean hits, 2 of which were monster hits is not a stretch. The Don 2, HNY, JTHJ, Dilwale, Ra One have hit him hard. This year if Raees had released along with Fan and Dear Zindagi at least there is a mixture of films.

Working with Imtiaz Ali is a fad of sorts, no real guarantee, just he’s the in thing. SRK has little script sense to greenlight a prolific production house. His reliable friends are dependable only to a point as explained here.

Dear Zindagi I liked but it could never be the catalyst type of film. Raees maybe. Fan sounded like a film predominantly for SRK fans. I expect a bit from Raees both box office and content wise, Kaabil can be no excuse as Excel have volunteered to enter into the clash.

      • hard to disagree with anything here. I’ll say this though… I’m hardly a fan of SRK but this whole idea that everyone has been let down by him and what not is a bit much to digest. He’s no angel but nor are they. No one really is that way in a movie industry. Sure Johar probably was sincere enough where SRK was concerned and I can accept SRK started moving away from him because the films weren’t working. But it’s not as if Johar is this ‘nice guy’ with everyone else. The same for the others. Whether it’s Aditya Chopra or whoever. Again SRK might be in the wrong where Johar is concerned but this whole idea that those guys are somehow morally superior or nicer people is impossible to accept. What however is true is that this sort of piece is a symptom. Years ago no one would have written this kind of piece about SRK. Just as all the negative pieces about Salman that were once not uncommon (and with good reason) have now more or less vanished (with good reason again I suppose!). Getting back to SRK-Johar all the fans who used to claim that films like KANK and MNIK were just fine and that they were huge globally and what not might want to convince SRK of this before anyone else!

        Like

        • SRK needs Raees to work or else his stardom is in serious danger. Johar and YRF are not obliged to keep working with him. Once they see, the return on investment is just not there, they are going to move away. They already have to an extent.

And this is really the final straw, where even rigged Awards don’t see a point in being blatantly partial to SRK anymore -like they did all this while. He’s not commanding the boxoffice nor is the audience enjoying his films. There’s just not enough motivation to support him now.

        • what a rubbish article was that..is that really written by a creditable journalist? It never reached above a fan/hater rant , atleast the quoted part of it here. dont care to read what’s left of it in the link..

But I do remember a time when everybody whoever talked on any discussion boards were complaining how SRK was stuck with these three friends quoted here..how he shud move away, they have ruined his career etc. Now after so much of prompting he did move away..or he himself got bored of them and started looking elsewhere, now the tone changes to how the others are let down by him. Karan Johar’s MNIK was meaningless for most parts of it, though we know srk did a better autistic or whatever than what aamir did later in Dhoom3 by virtue of that film. Farha’s HNY was downright ridiculous, its as if she has exhausted whatever resources she had already..who can blame anybody looking for atleast fresher ideas? Chennai Express did work handsomely but when rohit shetty again tried to put together a quick one, it didnt succeed.so thankfully we are not seeing another one next year..

SRK has obliged these friends of his long enough and has given them his time long enough. After him also not much spectacular work is done by these trio, so SRK wud hardly been sulking for them to not to take him in their ventures. And as for aditya chopra, he has always been making production ventures without SRK and their association has continued, the one direction venture..a befikre, was only fit for someone else than SRK. And even in Adi’s case, most observers wonder if there is something left in his hand and after Befikre, even die hard aditya chopra fans will be asking that.

        • I agree with Vijjie that SRK is better off without the likes of Farah and Rohit Shetty. That was my impression too that he had obliged even Johar for too long, and the results were just not there. But honestly, the results have not been there for him either ways -even with outside filmmakers.

But it is strange why Johar would mention that SRK is a possessive friend who did not relish the idea of the director working with others. Why would Johar say that in his autobiography, would he lie?

        • That is simply not true that Aamir took a backseat in the film. Some may have said it, but that doesn’t make it a fact. When I saw the film, I had no doubt he was the pivot. The film starts with him and ends with him. Many actors in the film have substantial roles, but Aamir’s is clearly the lengthiest and meatiest role, followed by that of the younger Geeta.

But the moment Aamir gets it, you SRK fans start “DESERVING RANT” which is so lol worthy, funny & absurd coming from Shahrukh fans!!!!!!! I don’t take any awards seriously even if Aamir keeps getting them each year as they have lost their credibility long back & credibility can’t be bought!! It is a moral victory for Aamir in the sense that despite his open disdain & contempt for such awards, they are forced to award him for restoring trust & faith in viewers perception that these awards are fair & impartial!! So all in all it’s a win-win situation for Aamir fans 😉

He did not go but his director accepted the award on his behalf. I had this grouse that Aamir should think of other actors in his films and his technical staff who maybe eager to get nominated and get awards. He should think of them and their aspirations. And the award givers should not punish others for none of their fault.

I am a big fan of Aamir’s performance in the context of the film DANGAL, but to me, it was Amitabh’s performance in PINK that ruled over everything. And I am not saying this just because I am a fan. I know I have praised Aamir to the hilt in DANGAL. But when thought-of in isolation, Amitabh’s performance in PINK stands out.

I am not saying that he was the ONLY one who should have won the best actor – the fact that he didn’t even win a critics’ award or a special mention is testimony to the fact that the award given to Aamir is just to save Filmfare’s asses; nothing more. There is no ‘honesty’ here; it’s just an attempt to salvage something…

Ignoring Amitabh’s act in PINK is a massive crime…

  25. 4 Days Total Collection of Chiranjeevi’s Khaidi No. 150

V.V. Vinayak’s directorial recent Telugu offering, Khaidi No. 150 has been released this Wednesday on good number of screens in India as well as overseas. Being the comeback movie of megastar Chiranjeevi after 10 years, it has enormous hype among fans and as expected getting overwhelmed response from audience. Due to its strong content, the movie has received very positive reviews from most of the critics also.

Chiranjeevi’s Khaidi No. 150 4th Day Box Office Collection

Written by the very promising filmmaker AR Murugadoss, Khaidi No. 150 is the official Telugu remake of Tamil movie Kaththi which had also witnessed such positive reactions. As per critics, the latest one is a complete entertainment package for Telugu audience. Both the lead stars Chiranjeevi & Kajal Agarwal has given wonderful performances, which add more flavor to it.

On the opening day, Khaidi No. 150 recorded phenomenal occupancy across the Telugu states and registered the business of 23.25 crores. From USA also, it had taken an impressive start of 8.56 crores on Tuesday (day-1 in USA). Then on the second day in AP/T, it faced usual drop of more than 70% and managed to add the decent amount of 6.10 crores to its account.

On its third day i.e. Friday, Chiranjeevi starrer reported more drop and raked the business of 5.40 crores*. On Saturday with further declination, Khaidi No. 150 minted the amount of 5 crores* and made its 4 days total collection as 39.75 crores* from Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. The movie is expected to get little higher response on Sunday.

Ok Jaanu could not do much on Saturday with growth of just 15%. This was expected as for one the evenings shows on Friday did not grow much and secondly its shows were hit XXX – The Return of Xander Cage which had its full release on Saturday. The collections of the film remain low and it will find it tough to get good growth on Sunday and even tougher to hold on Monday. For most multiplex films the Delhi and Punjab pocket has to perform well which has not happened here. In South collections are minimal due to big regional releases. The collections of Ok Jaanu over the first two days are as follows.

    Friday – 3,50,00,000
    Saturday – 4,00,00,000
    TOTAL – 7,50,00,000

Hollywood release XXX – Return Of Xander Cage grossed around 6.25 crore nett on its first full day which is a fair number for a Hollywood release and in fact better than films like Hindi films like Finding Fanny and Piku which were also riding on the popularity of Deepika Padukone for a start. The difference here is that this film is action but with a two day weekend what can the film do. If the film had three days it would have picked up over 21 crore nett which is impossible now. The total till now is 8 crore nett including paid previews and if the film is lucky it may double the total for the weekend. The South having big regional films would have affected the collections as this sort of film has good chance in the South especially Nizam / Andhra but that area has two biggies.

Dangal has already accumulate nearly 6 crore nett on Friday and Saturday and another 4 crore nett plus on Sunday should not be too hard. the fourth week record of PK may be difficult as the trend of business is different now especially after week one with higher weekends and lower weekdays. Still setting records in fourth weekend is a huge achievement for the film though some credit also goes to the tax exemptions as the GROSS business is lower than 3 Idiots. Which means the amount collected at the ticket counters is less but lesser share has gone to the state governments due to the exemptions. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,38,00,000
    Second Week – 1,11,51,00,000
    Third Week – 43,75,00,000

The ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ director has written his side of the story in the book, “My first problem was with Kareena. She asked for too much money and we had some kind of a fallout at that time. ‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge!’ had just released, directed by Kunal Kohli. She said, ‘Aditya Chopra’s assistant Kunal Kohli has made this flop, so Karan Johar’s assistant, Nikhil Advis is not to be trusted either’.”
The 44-year-old goes to talk about the reason behind the clash, “The weekend of ‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge’s release, I offered her ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, and she asked for the same money that Shah Rukh Khan was getting. I said, ‘Sorry’.” The television personality further stated that this demand of Kareena hurt him due to which they were not in talking terms.

Shedding light on the rough patch of their friendship and how the filmmaker signed bubbly actress Priety Zinta for ‘Kal Ho Na ho’, he revealed, “I was very hurt. I told my father, ‘Leave that negotiation room’ and I called her. She didn’t take my call, and I said, ‘We’re not taking her.’ And signed Preity Zinta instead. Kareena and I didn’t speak to each other for almost a year. For a year, we looked through each other at parties. It was very idiotic. She was a kid; she’s a decade younger than me.”
Karan wrote, “We were releasing ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ in November. We had shot the film in June, July, August and in September I had to shoot the songs, make the promos and so on. So, I had to head back, while my father continued the treatment in New York. That was the time Kareena Kapoor called me. It was August. We had not spoken for nine months. She called and said, ‘I heard about Yash uncle.’ She got really emotional on the phone, and she said, ‘I love you and I am so sorry I haven’t been in touch. Don’t worry’.”

His accusation that Amitabh didn’t call out his co-stars, I am not sure of. I don’t have many articles or interviews of Amitabh from that era to give credence to this. During his peak days Amitabh himself was a villain for the press and he stayed away from them! But in his later years, when he talks of his films, Amitabh ALWAYS talks about each of them. For God’s sake he even talks of SS and SS invites him for his book-launch.

  33. My thoughts on OK Jaanu:

Baadshah’s pale, pointless and unpleasurable recreation of Rahman’s Humma Humma pretty much sums up my thoughts on OK Jaanu.

Fourteen years ago, Shaad Ali began his directorial career by remaking his mentor Mani Ratnam’s Alai Payuthey into Saathiya. I loved the latter – fantastic soundtrack by AR Rahman and Gulzar (the latter also credited for the brilliant dialogue), great performances from Vivek and Rani (both at their short-lived peaks), and a film that seemed genuinely fresh. Over a decade later, I cannot judge whether I would still feel the same way if the film released now, or indeed whether the fact that I hadn’t seen the original made it easier for me to appreciate it, but sadly Shaad Ali’s attempt to remake Mani Sir’s OK Kanmani into OK Jaanu is entirely mediocre.

Having loved the original it’s hard not to compare the two and in each department the remake falls short (I watched Alai Payuthey many years later whilst working through Ratnam’s filmography – and whilst one can discern the difference between master and student, Saathiya remains a movie I like) Most crucially in OK Jaanu’s failure it is the lead pairing of Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor who are so poor that the film collapses around them. The latter appears a poor imitation of Farhan Akhtar (rather a poor choice to imitate in anycase) and any charm that Shraddha held in Aashiqui 2 has long since disippated. So all that’s left is Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson but here too the emotional heights of the original are not reached.

So don’t watch OK Jannu – pay a couple of pounds on YouTube, put on a pair of spectacles and watch the Tamil OK Kanmani with subtitles.

    • yes – and the entire film had to be on the shoulders of the lead pair – I repeat that they should have taken Nithya Menon in Hindi also and maybe Siddharth Malhotra would have been a better choice…….why Mani didn’t direct the Hindi that is another question?

The growth of the film was phenomenal on Saturday and because of this it managed to set a new record. If it was not for the cricket match on Sunday the collections of the film could have been around 1 crore nett more on Sunday The total of the film after 24 days is 358 crore nett. The film has grossed 100 crore nett in Mumbai and Delhi / UP has crossed the 75 crore nett. The latter is a record beating the 70.60 crore nett of Bajrangi Bhaijaan but in Mumbai it is still behind PK which grossed 104.21 crore nett. Its unlikely it will reach PK in Mumbai leaving that film the biggest in the biggest circuit till date. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

The business was poor across the board in all circuits. There are some circuits where the film had no chance and some others like Mysore got affected by big South India releases. In fact the Bangalore city collections over the weekend were less than the first day numbers of Khaidi No.150 (Telugu), Gautamiputra Satakarni (Telugu) and Bairavaa (Tamil). This left Mumbai and Pune to be best, Delhi NCR and Punjab is hard anyway with a weak hero unless its a North based film with content they relate to.

  39. Amaal Mallik voices his opinion on unfair nominations at award shows and its bang on.

Surprisingly composer-singer Amaal Mallik who was nominated for BAAGHI and KAPOOR AND SONS, wasn’t happy about being nominated and hence voiced his opinion on social media.

He is the only singer who isn’t happy with his nominations and this is what he has to say.

    Read on his words!

“I am nominated for my Albums #KapoorandSons & #Baaghi at the award shows which is an honour because Kapoor and Sons was a beautiful collaborative effort by Me #Badshah, Tanishk Bagchi & Arko Pravo and the result is for all to see !
But if you nominate a #Baaghi that has had average music, only a #SabTera #ChamCham & till a point it was #AgarTuHota that did decent, it’s unbelievable because a #BaarBaarDekho & #MSDhoni are bigger albums with 4 successful songs in each.

It is so funny & surprising that you go out of your way and give a star kid all the new comer awards for the best debut, for a performance no one even saw…..
Whereas a #DiljitDosanjh who deserved that award for #UdtaPunjab is nowhere!!
#Sarbjit had #RandeepHooda almost kill himself to bones, and play that character, and you nominate only #AishwaryaRaiBachchan hahahahaha !
    Why forget albums like #Kahaani #Neerja by a new composer, #BaarBaarDekho #MSDhoni #Airlift #Jugni and what about a super albums like #Fitoor & #Banjo….
#MSDhoni makes it to the Oscars and it doesn’t even get considered as a best film by the award functions…..
#NeerajPandey not nominated for #MSD, #RajaMenon not nominated for #Airlift, and no #AkshayKumar for Best Actor seriously?
Why don’t these honest to script yet commercially successful films and albums make it to the nominations list…..
A nomination is an acknowledgment of Good Work , well that’s what I know, but we are disragarding the contribution people have made to the year with their good music and good films, and great performances.
What happened to Aligarh & Airlift as films, #ManojBajpayee was incredible and so was #AkshayKumar.
When I won for Roy last year at almost every award function I was disappointed the most, that an album like #Badlapur was not even considered, it was an album on par with Roy, if not better.
That year even #BajrangiBhaijaan was a great album, but Dilwale and Tamasha were considered better whereas there was so much musical Range #PritamDa showed in #BB
Coming to folk Hindustani music, why not nominate #PremRatan then,it was beautiful folkish melody, which works with rural india just like a #Mirziya…..
By not nominating some ones’ work is a mark of disrespect to that Individual.
First things first to clear out – #AeDilHainMushkil is by far the best music album by Pritam Da and Arijit is the best singer and Amitabh Bhattacharya is the best lyricist…..And I root for that album as it is the greatest album of the last 5 years.
But and a very big BUT !!!!!!!
Why do you have a jury that is still working in the film industry, you need a non-biased jury, not people who are still part of the industry, who end up nominating themselves lol for their own music, their own productions and directorials…..
I am ashamed to be nominated for #Baaghi, and I know my director and producers might hate me for making this remark, but it was a a very pathetically average album….I’m not crying about my self here, I should be happy I have 2 nominations almost everywhere this year but yes it’s funny !
    Please do a survey and you will know only #ADHM #Dangal & #Sultan #KapoorAndSons #BaarBaarDekho #Airlift & #SanamRe till a point are the albums that the public has loved….
Please be fair and nominate a #Dangal that was honest to script too and yet is a rage today and is topping charts….
Out of respect for seniors you can’t just keep nominating them for stuff that hasn’t Even been appreciated or even heard by 90% of india….
That’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in long l
Winning or Lose doesn’t matter the point is, After tremendous hit singles like #JabTak #KaunTujhe #Besabriyaan #SabTera #BolDoNaZara , the award jury decided not to nominate Armaan Malik for his work.
Now coming to the final crux, this is me as a 3rd person who is seeing things happen, and I’m not speaking as a brother here.
The problem lies in the way people operate here, we all ball talk about welcoming youngsters with open arms and supporting them, well I think the rise of #ArmaanMalik as a voice has barely begun, and even if you try to duck youngsters like him, they will keep bouncing back and hitting charts…..
Not nominating Manoj Muntashir for his work in #MSD & Kumaar for #Airlift and Rashmi Virag for #BolDoNaZara is as unbelievable as it can get, Amitabh Bhattacharya will win and he deserves it too, but if you don’t nominate good work you aren’t even inspiring the deserving hard working people to deliver better….
Nominating music & albums that no one has ever heard, that’s crazy as hell boss !!!!
A last request, please don’t nominate music that only your jury members sit at home and applaud over starters and drinks.
    Really ?!???
Award Gaya bhaad mein yaar, but atleast nominate people as per their talent and their body of work every year….
By not doing so you are making a joke of our film industry and the public backslash is huge, every accolade seems so so unreal and planned, new awards to keep people happy are coming up….
If after this post even if I don’t get nominations ever in my life, it is okay, I’ve always voiced my opinion, and I stand by it !
    Good Day.’

Truly Amaal Mallik is a rockstar!

    • Why are Award functions obsessed with the Khans? Akshay Kumar fans make a strong point!

Akshay Kumar has undoubtedly had one of the best times last year. He had three releases in 2016 and all of them – Airlift, Housefull 3 and Rustom – entered the Rs 100 crore club. In fact out of the 8 films which crossed the 100 crore mark last year, three belonged to AK.

Still, he was ignored at this year’s Filmfare Awards. Forget an Award, he was not even nominated in the Best Actor category. Fans went ballistic on social media and slammed the group for their royal snub, right after the nomination list was announced.

The Filmfare Awards were conducted on Saturday night and now, Akki fans have sent out a very strong and valid point in the form of a video. The 50 second video talks about how Award functions today are obsessed with the surname and don’t value performances anymore. Correct, indeed!

Filmfare Awards: Aamir Khan had swore off award shows after he lost the Best Actor prize to Shah Rukh Khan in 1996

The Filmfare Awards effectively redeemed itself on Saturday by naming Aamir Khan, 51, Best Actor for his remarkable performance in Dangal. Decades ago, Aamir swore off award shows after he lost the Filmfare Best Actor prize to Shah Rukh Khan – in 1996, SRK was awarded for playing Raj in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge over Aamir as Munna in Rangeela. Many, foremost among them Aamir, considered that the Rangeela performance was superior to the DDLJ one and the credibility of Indian award shows was forever dented. This changed on Saturday, when Aamir and Alia Bhatt won the two top acting honours, for Dangal and Udta Punjab. Aamir doesn’t attend award shows but Alia, who is all of 23, does and happily posed with her trophy.

Alia’s performance as the abused and unnamed Bihari migrant in drug drama Udta Punjab has been sweeping award shows. The actress spent all of Sunday responding to congratulatory messages on Twitter, like these:

Last week, when the nominations for the Filmfare Awards were announced, Twitter was enraged by the omission of Akshay Kumar in the Best Actor category, which included a nod for Salman Khan’s role in Sultan. Also criticized was the overlooking of Dangal’s female cast – actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra and Sakshi Tanwar.

In its winners’ list, however, Filmfare somewhat mended its reputation by awarding Sultan just once for the song Jag Ghoomeya and for heaping prizes on Dangal, Kapoor And Sons, Udta Punjab and Neerja.

The Filmfare Awards for 2017 were held in Mumbai last Saturday, and co-hosted by Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar.

‘Lightbox’ which is jointly owned by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Productions, will soon be shutting down. The last film screening that took place at the theater was Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’-when hardly anyone knew that doors of the theater would soon be closed down.

A staff member from the theater was quoted in a report stating that,”From January 1, the place remains non-functional. The staff has been paid well in advance and asked to look for alternate jobs. What bosses plan to do with the place, we don’t know. Nobody knows if it has been temporarily shut.”. (sic)

A source close to Farhan has been quoted informing that, “Ritesh has been nagging Farhan to shut down the place since last year. After some of their films didn’t work at the box office, their year-end monetary review showed it was no longer feasible for them to run the theater. Since the place holds sentimental value for several industry people, they have volunteered to get the place up and running again, but Farhan and Ritesh are yet to take the final call”. (sic)

Also, it’s been speculated that a few members from the film faternity have shown their interests in restoring the theater and Shah Rukh Khan is among one of them. A source was mentioned in the report asserting that, ” He (Shah Rukh) was planning to host the first screening of ‘Raees’ at Lightbox”. (sic)

However, we all are yet to have an official confirmation from Farhan and Ritesh on the news.

Murugadoss( in hindi only), Hirani(as popularity-wise 3 idiots is his best to date), Nitesh(too early as just 3 films old), John Matthew, Vikram Bhatt, Deepa Mehta(for 1947-Earth), Reema Kagti,Dharmesh Darshan( RH being his most known work),Indra Kumar(either Dil or Ishq being his 2 most successful films) & some disputable names such as Kunal Kohli( Hum Tum over Fanna), Rajkumar Santoshi(as per the cult status of AAA), Abbas Tyrewala for JTYJN. In most cases either ditector’s best or most popular outing seems to be with Aamir!! It says a lot about Aamir’s contribution in being the enabler to realise the vision of the director.

        • Pretty good list regardless. One might prefer other alternatives but the selection is not way off except for Santoshi IMO. Totally get the point being made.

In general I see people loosely attributing Aamirs sucesss to “script sense” by overlooking or in some sense insulting his knowledge for movie making he possesses and the value he brings to the project. Aamir can be a top 5 director, editor or production manager if he wants to. In addition to excellent post production skills including market awareness and distribution. Simply put, in basketball analogy, he makes everyone around him better or perform better. Like Michael Jordan, Steph Curry etc.

    Tuesday 17 January 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dangal (Hindi) is now coming towards the end of its run as it collected 1.25 crore nett on its fourth Monday. The film is still giving competition to the new releases like OK Jaanu but that is because these films are poor. The fourth weekend was probably the last record for Dangal as it does not look like making a fourth week record and after that it will be even harder. The film has so far grossed 359 crore nett plus and with the fourth week set to close at around 14.50 crore nett it will take it to 362.50 crore nett after four weeks and then it will add in the range of 5-8 crore nett in the remaining weeks. The film has set the bar very high and with the tax exemptions probably taking it 10-15 crore nett higher than it would have been otherwise its not going to be easy to beat in the near future. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

Obviously its not a huge fall from Friday as that was not a full day but collections are heavily down from the weekend. The release of the film was a total mess up and now looking at Monday it would hardly have made a difference to the outcome. The weekend would have been 20 crore nett plus but thats all. The film is looking to close the first week at around 23 crore nett with not much coming after. the only victory is that its beaten the main Hindi release OK Jaanu comfortably and that too just a two day weekend. Bollywood’s Aamir Khan today told his Dangal co-star, Kashmiri teen Zaira Wasim, that he’s “with her”, a day after she was trolled on Facebook+ because J&K’s chief minister called her “a Kashmiri role model”.
After J&K CM Mufti called Zaira a “role model”+ , Twitter trolls called both women “Indian agents.” Zaira then wrote two posts on Facebook saying she doesn’t want to be considered a role model. She then deleted these posts. Today, Aamir Khan came out in full support of her+ .
“I have read Zaira’s statement, and I can understand and imagine what lead her to make that statement. Zaira, I want you to know that we are all with you. The beauty is that bright, young, talented, hardworking, respectful, caring and courageous kids like you are a role model for kids not only in India, but across the world. You certainly are a role model for me! May god bless you. Love. Aamir,” the Bollywood star wrote.
He added a P.S.: “I appeal to everyone to now leave her alone and respect the fact that she is just a 16 yr old girl trying her best to deal with life.”

Wrestler Geeta Phogat, whom Zaira played in Dangal, also defended teenage filmstar.
“She shouldn’t be scared as the nation is with her… There’s no need for Zaira to issue an apology. She has not done anything wrong. We have made the nation proud by winning medals. It is a proud moment for the citizens of the country. Zaira has worked hard to play my role,” Geeta said.

If not Aamir, Dangal would’ve gone to South supremos Kamal Haasan or Mohanlal

“….However, what if the actor had turned down the script of ‘Dangal’? One would assume the script would then go to another A-list Bollywood actor.

If the makers of the film are anyhting to go by, the film would have not gone to a Bollywood actor, but would have gone scouting south.

According to an interview in New Indian Express, Divya Rao, Creative Producer at UTV Motion Pictures revealed that they would have approached either of the two South supremos, Kamal Haasan or Mohanlal with the script…..”

In the context of above article on alternate casting, and then the discussion on this blog on Aamir’s unique contribution to his directors, it is pretty much clear only Aamir’s astute mind must have brought in the idea of adding 5 mins of younger Mahavir Phogat to make sure the ‘conventional thinking audience’ gets their younger Aamir khan to have them rooting for a typical Hindi movie hero. Just a father – daughter story would still be a decent film but those 5 mins (including the fat to fit video as marketing tool) changed the whole trajectory of the movie & Aamir turned this simple folksy tale for niche audience into a universal / all embracing drama.

The real truth of his contribution will only be known to Nitesh Tiwari but if they were to cast Mohanlal and Kamal this is what I feel. Even before the above article came looking at Mahavir Phogat and his family @ the Kapil Sharma show, I was feeling the younger Aamir must have been added to the original script by none other than Aamir himself.

It is to his credit, his younger look screen time was very measured and he never misused it to indulge in much vanity or to boast his ego and tamper with the original script.

    • Why are you so invested in figuring out why THIS film became so big and obviously bigger than Sultan? Sometimes it is nothing more than it moved people more. It’s happened 5 times on Xmas in a row…Each time the highest grosser ever has been delivered. And you are driving your mind crazy over it. We’ve already given you Salman is a bigger star, what more do you want?

I mean you want him to be a better actor too obviously from your comments and demonstrate the ability to deliver the biggest collections ever. The former is an opinion you have and vast majority will laugh at. The latter will happen one day, save your writing for that momentous occasion.

Otherwise your chasing something that is neither here nor there. Basically give up if you can.

Dangal box office and your mental trauma is nearly over. Soon you’ll have the delights of SRK and Hrithik fans to indulge you.

In any case TL just got bigger with the additional insertion of SRK, not a 2-3 scene Aamir younger body that was more a blink and you miss moment unlike what TL will have in store (TL marketing tool already out in full force). If you thought TL was a record breaker before now it must be a guarantee surely!

And of course Hirani (probably Aamir, Dutt and Ranbir revenge) have ruined Xmas 2017 by taking screens from TZH…Just adding to your next bundle of excuses, you know helping you out in building your case for later this year if TZH doesn’t deliver 15 day average of 25+ CR as you predicted so early on with conviction.

In fact let’s work the excuses, predictions out now rather than wait to hear them.

Also you were 100% sure no one would clash with TZH, now you have Hirani to deal with who on any given day is capable of delivering a better film than whomever is directing TZH with or without Aamir.

I’d love an Aamir cameo now in Dutt film just to rub it in even more!

      • Firstly Dangal is done and dusted and the results should please Aamir clappers who are resuscitated with much needed energy to go on for another 2 ‘long’ years. Actually my comment was a bit of praise for Aamir in the context of few previous comments on directors working with him and how he has been making geniuses of all these regular people otherwise.

For the record I am always invested in good cinema regardless of the cast. Salman is an oddity in terms of zoning which I talk about here ( strictly as a counterpoint on this blog ) . He is a typical nonconformist and deviation beyond reach of any bollywood model. Let me admit sometimes there is temptation to club him with the western icons (a mini MJ sort) but his heart and soul is so rooted and connected to the impoverished lot in India that it would unfair to do so……so let’s leave this zone as ‘unique’.

Whether it is Tubelight or TZH I will be on board only if the movies are worth my time. For the rest in this new age there are many different avenues to connect to his stardom.

Regarding TZH- Dutt biopic clash I have always believed the younger lot needs to challenge the old brigade upfront to win any admiration. I firmly believe luck favors the brave and until we don’t get gutsy stars the old camp will continue to rule….so if Ranbir like Ranveer is able to come out ahead it’s a major feat.

Having said that you and me have been on blogs long enough to realize just reaching and touching the top is not what superstardom is all about. I started to like Ranveer but look what has he done to himself since then and where is he placed…..so the actual test begins once you hit the top mark. Ranbir showed some glimpses with YJHD but could not sustain any bit of it and currently on trajectory of Abhi who was getting hyped with each project but had to eat crow and acknowledge the real world humbly.

        • In all fairness TZH is a project, Salman greenlit just to have a go at Hirani-Ranbir as it was pretty much known nobody would clash with them and they will get a free Christmas ride and put up some huge numbers. With TZH , Salman has effectively cut them short and make them rethink if they still want to come on that date.

Looking at Katrina’s career and the way Ranbir has ditched her midway, this is also a project to get her back to limelight. Salman is a rare breed and this is why his friends / family and people close to him vouch for his generosity.

        • All this sanju-salman tussle in media is basically related to release date and VVC/Hirani using Dutt to get Salman to let go Christmas but Salman will take this to the right conclusion.

Hirani sans Aamir will be tested too and already altered the script to give it a funnier story………funny is all Hirani knows till date.

There is a hindi word ‘Katashk’ – he is master of humorous katashk on society but let us see how he does that with Dutt biopic because if he attempts a Ghayal with Dutt biopic…..results will be different.

What an awesome plan! It didn’t take long for you to introduce an excuse after all. Salman flippantly greenlight’s a project to stop Hirani, Dutt and co from hoarding Xmas whilst resurrecting Katrina’s career.

Sleeping around and other vices are norms in that world but somewhere Ranbir’s public perception has taken a beating because Katrina seemed all in it with her bags & baggage and was suddenly left stranded. It still wouldn’t matter but audience is a sucker for a fairy tale ending and Ranbir should have manned up to it……unless the disclaimer was in place prior going into such relationship which only they would know. But media reports Katrina seems very much hurt with this parting & royal ditch at the altar.

        • Of course anyone can deliver a blockbuster. Kangana recently did with TWMR but it’s the big grosser to the tune of 200cr or 300cr which become difficult after low openings even if the content is first rate. Its very difficult to overcome the shortfall of opening even if the movie runs for a very long time. I will admit media overdrive on clash will get Dutt biopic the required hype so that is a plus for them if they choose to clash.

Salman stardom guarantees a min 200 cr unless Ali Zafar makes a movie like Sultan and surprises all of us. Unlike Kabir his school of thought is still very much Hindi cinema. Incidentally I have liked all movies of Zafar until now including Gunday. Imagine the storytelling of outlaws / coal mines in Gunday with Salman-SRK or any other top combo – you would instantly get a Karan-Arjun

  68. Aamir Khan Stands Apart In Mumbai

Dangal crossed the century mark in Mumbai circuit on Tuesday to become the second film to hit 100 crore in the circuit and it remains a number that only Aamir Khan films have achieved who now has two centuries in Mumbai. The gap to the biggest non Aamir Khan starrer in Mumbai is quite a big one with Bajrangi Bhaijaan at 90 crore nett. Dangal has crossed the 100 crore nett mark in Mumbai but won’t reach the figures of PK as collections are low now and it may add another 1.5-2 crore nett. This is mainly because the figures of Dangal are short of PK in Gujarat / Saurashtra. Even PK was under performing in Gujarat as compared to other parts of the country but not as much as Dangal. In real terms 3 Idiots remains the best performer in Mumbai over the last ten years or so. Below are the top ten grossers in Mumbai circuit of all time.

Its the sort of cinema a star on the up should keep away from but it seems to be happening quite often. Ranbir Kapoor also made similar mistakes a couple of years back like Bombay Velvet and Tamasha and is still trying to recover from that. The collections of OK Jaanu over the first five days are as follows.

    Friday – 3,50,00,000
    Saturday – 4,25,00,000
    Sunday – 4,00,00,000

XXX – The Return Of Xander Cage continued to fall on Tuesday and the way its going the film will have a first week of 23.50 crore nett apprx and even though there is no major release this week it will hardly do any business. The film will release in US / Canada this week and it will have to better there or the Hollywood career of Deepika Padukone will be over before it started. The media in India made a big deal about it but the audience in India was not really interested. The collections of XXX – The Return Of Xander Cage over the first five days are as follows.

Salman is extremely close to Devgn & Dutt and that relationship is pretty old one and same with Govinda. Aamir has been very vocal about his fondness for Salman and vice versa for him and it’s been like that for ages. With SRK the new found camaraderie is just a matter of picking him up because he is pretty down and out at this moment. The top 5 have always been on a curve since 90s and each one gets exhausted after staying at top for a few years and then the next one takes over. It’s a matter of time SRK will settle down and get back his zing. The talent is there and the day he levels with himself and gets back to basic he is going to take over.

On the other point on Salman complexities yesterday – “Wow a martyr, destroyer all in one package”

Sometime back Bachchan was asked about Salman and he complimented him saying he perfectly represents his Naseeb song – ‘Hoon yaaron ka main yaar dushmano ka dushman’

Less than 48 hours after she was apparently trolled online for meeting Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti last Saturday, the 16-year-old was mobbed by teens in Jammu.

Everyone fought to be photographed with her at the event organized by the state sports council.

In a question-answer session, she was endearing and candid.

“If I want to join Bollywood, what should I do?” asked a Kashmiri boy.

Zaira replied, “I was never interested in acting but it was in my destiny to become an actor and that’s what happened…I pray to God a lot.”

The Kashmiri teen has won wide acclaim with her portrayal of a younger Geeta Phogat in the blockbuster biopic on the wrestling champ.

On public demand, Zaira recited her famous lines from the movie – “Hum ne dardiye uska…( I also slapped him)”. Her parents beamed proudly by her side.

Zaira was caught in a huge row after posting and then deleting a Facebook apology following her meeting with Mehbooba Mufti.

In the post, Zaira said she is nobody’s role model and wouldn’t want anybody to follow her footsteps. Zaira later deleted the post and tweeted saying she was upset that it had been “turned into national news.” She deleted the tweet as well.

Many across India came out in her support, including Aamir Khan, who called her his role model.

A Kashmiri girl who met Zaira said: “As a girl I want to say, this happens in Kashmir if a girl goes out to do something different, society points fingers at her, but Zaira has done what never crosses the mind of Kashmiri girls.”

  75. The results were better in South India where the two big Telugu films did very well and the Tamil film was also okay. The Telugu film Khaidi No.150 took a phenomenal opening at 41.75 crore GROSS which was the eighth highest ever in India including all films and the third highest ever for a film from the South. The five day weekend closed at 77 crore GROSS which is a huge number for a South Indian film. The film scored in Karnataka as well as Nizam / Andhra

The other Telugu release Gautamputra Satakarni also fared well as it grossed 16 crore crore GROSS on day one and had a four day weekend of 38 crore GROSS

The Tamil film Bhairavaa was an average fare as it grossed 11 crore GROSS on day one and 30 crore GROSS over four days.

  80. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was present at the launch of filmmaker Karan Johar’s autobiography “An Unsuitable Boy” on Monday, said Karan is an intelligent and sensitive man with a gifted quality to understand human emotions.

Shah Rukh Khan said, “I think the name of the book should have been a good boy instead of “An Unsuitable Boy” because I think Karan is an extremely intelligent boy and a gifted human being.

“When I am saying intelligent, I meant the ability to understand human emotions, people and their situation. I think that is a gift he has from God. He is an extremely gifted sensitive person. And I must mention that he is a brave boy, he is the special human being I have come across,” he added.

It was a star-studded evening where many Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Suchitra Pillai, Sweta Bachchan, celebrated author Shobhaa De and co-author of the book journalist Poonam Saxena, among others, were present.

The book launch was followed by an interactive session with Shobhaa De that unveiled a better insight of the book.

  83. Hrithik Roshan”s character in Kaabil is required to speak in many voices, including Hindi cinema icon Amitabh Bachchan’s famous baritone. And going by the response to the scene in the trailer, it looks like the younger actor has nailed it.
A source associated with the Rakesh Roshan production that is helmed by Sanjay Gupta tells us, “When Hrithik did a voice imitation of Bachchan saab, he was so uncannily close to the original that everyone on the sets assumed that sound designer Resul Pookutty had somehow engineered the voiceover.” Hrithik’s character in the film, Rohan Bhatnagar, is a visually challenged dubbing artiste. Apart from Big B’s voice, Rohan mimics other celebrities as well.

Interestingly, mimicry happens to be one of the light-eyed superstar’s hidden talents, and so, he insisted that his voice wouldn’t be dubbed by someone else. On his part, Hrithik says, “I guess this is just a reflection of the kind of impact Mr Bachchan has had on my generation, and of course, the fact that hard work equals results.” ‘Kaabil’, produced by FilmKraft Productions Pvt Ltd, releases January 25.

  84. There is a reason why many call Aamir Khan, a perfectionist and it is because of the kind of dedication and sincerity that the actor gives to his art. Whether it is gaining weight, toning his body, Aamir Khan can go to extreme lengths for his role. However, he doesn’t like distractions whilst prepping and this time the superstar has been quite cautious about it.

Aamir Khan, we hear, has taken off to an unknown location located in a region near Southwestern Pacific Ocean to prepare for his forthcoming film Thugs Of Hindostan. It so happened that the last time the actor was in the US prepping for Dangal, he had many visitors which was quite distracting. So this time the actor decided to keep it undisclosed.

It has been learnt that his recent boot camp schedule for his role involves a lot of sports activities. From trekking to swimming to tennis to gymming, the actor has to undergo training for six hours and also fulfil nine hours of sleep. Besides this schedule, the remaining hours of the day, the actor can dedicate it to his leisure activities and it is being said that Aamir Khan takes this time to read the script of Thugs Of Hindostan. It is also being said that the superstar likes to indulge in more sports and since he is an early riser, he follows the regime religiously.

Aamir Khan will return after a month from the boot camp. On the other hand, Thugs Of Hindostan brings together yet another stalwart from Bollywood, that is Amitabh Bachchan with the superstar Khan.

I still remember “Jayshah’s column” about boxoffice and its honesty. Actually BOI has shut may propganda shops and due to that reason people seem to be crying round o clock. BOI has a valid reason here and they are just quoting DCH as an example to target these unrban kind of films. If you remember last year only six films succeded and rest failed falling in same kind of geners. BOI being boxoffice site, he’s every right to raise finger at such kind of cinema which has been unable to fetch revenue upto distributer level. Many single screen theatres have been closed or at the verge of being closed.

I don’t say this kind of cinema should be banned but more focus should be on the films which are more rooted and cater to pan India audience.

        • For the record I disapprove this whole commentary of box-office india link. I have no idea why I perfectly standard website will suddenly go on a different tangent and target diverse cinema so vehemently .

What they should target is the fraud and corruption and self serving Kashyap / Dibakar of the world who have not offered much to the discerning viewers but have vitiated the atmosphere with their big and idle talks, passionate blogs and free avenues in media. Basically targeting the big stars and putting them under pressure as if something wrong was been done by doing Rowdy Rathore and Ready. Nothing stopped them doing their kind of cinema and why could they generate a new breed of stars with their own cinema. Don’t tell me only the uneducated watch movie.
Why were they not be able to court educated, thinking viewers and attract them to their own brand of cinema. These guys were frauds and corrupt with no talent and just made merry with corporate money and small time stars like Ranbir/Shahid etc who were total failure in regular massy movies. The Budget of BV and now watch Rangoon is a case in point……

What I am happy Salman realised their worth early on and dismissed them early on and maintained his own vision and connection with audience. Let others override him with their kind of cinema and then we can talk. That is why Aamir gets respected for a Dangal more than a Sultan. Also each actor has its own niche and area of expertise. Even for all the diverse genre talks and distinctive cinema an Aamir sticks to his ‘more or less’ tried and tested social commentary sprinkled with light humor. His truly different has been only a Talaash and results were limited there.

Do I find BOI’s rant on DCH strange? Yes but as I have said time and time again, BOI is first and foremost a Box office NUMBERS site. Their commentary about DCH, Dangal, Fan, Raees or any other movie does not interest me. I am only interested in numbers and this is where BOI is always spot on. They called FAN an outright flop (and this is where the SRK biased would have shown) because it’s easy to overpraise a superhit movie like Chennai Express but where the bias really shows is when a FLOP is made to look like a ‘below average’ or ‘average’ movie. If you look at their 2016 classification, FAN is nowhere to be found as a money spinner. Bottom line, I don’t think BOI is anti Aamir or Pro SRK or Pro Salman or Anti Akshay. They don’t have a rats ass about a movie’s quality. To them, a movie is all about the money it made. I know I sound like a broken record defending BOI (and no I am not running the website 🙂 ) but I need to see some serious misreporting on numbers to declare BOI websito non grata.

Just to show their stars on top, they crossed every limit with the result, embrassement was their final destination. There were pro Khan sites as well and all faced the same fate. • actually they’ve reduced many SRK numbers months later. The interesting thing is these ‘mistakes’ happened more with his films than others. Or rather his numbers had to be revised down at times, never up. But leaving all this aside (it’s obvious they have certain star preferences..) you can’t take anyone’s numbers at face value unless you have a very good reason to do so. And of course you don’t. Or you couldn’t because nothing is verifiable in India. At the extremes or when a film is a really big one or a total failure it’s easy to figure out what’s going on irrespective of the numbers. Even otherwise with some experience in these matters one can make an educated guess. But it’s much harder to do so for borderline cases. And this is where the commentary is all important. If you look up the numbers or the commentary on a Hollywood film on any reasonable site or in any legitimate publication you’ll get the ‘true picture’ (pun intended). You don’t have to be an expert to understand how well or not a current release has done. Similarly when comparisons are used in the commentary they are appropriate ones. Or when numbers are discussed, from ticket prices to distribution rates to 3D/IMAX advantages and so on.. in each case these are verifiable things. Even WOM is done professionally with audience polls in theaters and elsewhere. There is the attempt to make things as transparent as possible. What do you have in India on the other hand? Distribution numbers that no one can verify, production costs that are also similarly unverifiable, screen/print counts that are also hard to figure out, finally box office numbers that are in the same category. Now of course in each case you have reports in newspapers with guys like Taran or Nahta (already these guys are the most compromised/corrupt imaginable) throwing out these numbers or the producers doing it or whatever but that’s hardly verifiable stuff. Or you have sites like BOI or folks who turn up on blogs like this one who keep insinuating ‘inside knowledge’. Again we’re supposed to just take them at face value! And in each case a certain agenda is always being driven favoring certain stars or production houses or whatever. It’s all fairly obvious. So one can’t say ‘just look at the numbers’ when those numbers cannot be verified. But secondly the commentary is important because not everyone gets down into the weeds on these things. Not everyone follows the box office in such detail. Not everyone follows these dishonest sources in such detail either. In other words if you do all of these things maybe you can figure out what’s going on despite the commentary but for most casual observers/readers the reports are extremely misleading and intended to be so. Because they can only make sense of the numbers once they read the reports. Of course even the numbers on their own don’t mean much. Just because a film makes a 100 or 200 doesn’t automatically mean some great milestone has been reached. It all depends on costs and/or contexts. Yes one can say a film has had enough of an audience assuming it trended a certain way. There’s all sorts of grey area here. BOI have been extremely dishonest over the years. There are countless examples that many of us have examined and debated to death and there is no point in getting into the specifics again but there are all these cases where they played around with the numbers and not just the commentary. So in one actor’s case they’ll use the highest end of a range, in another the lowest, in one case they’ll look at best grossing centers, in another the worst ones, in one case they’ll report the lowest occupancy shows and use those averages while in another the opposite, all of this has happened countless times. When a Salman movie does well it’s like they’re ready to throw a party, when an Aamir movie does the same it’s like someone writing the reports with constipation. Then take the recent DCH commentary. Why is there even a debate on this 15 years after the event? Isn’t this ridiculous? But beyond this all the points in those pieces are extremely stupid. DCH didn’t run a scam and somehow became an influential movie. It became iconic for a certain New Indian generation and it’s fairly easy to see how it’s still the best one in its genre. Beyond this constantly attacking small films is also stupidity or dishonesty or both. Because there is a market for smaller films that only do well in certain kinds of multiplexes. There’s nothing wrong with this. Hollywood routinely makes films, even with major stars, that only run in certain major cities. It’s all about the budgeting. You could have an expensive small film but you are far more likely to have super-expensive and bloated major films, the very films BOI otherwise mark as ‘ok’ no matter how badly they perform just because they cross some arbitrary benchmark. And note how these examples are rather convenient ones. Why DCH? Why now say attack the Yashraj 90s model (something I have said for every long)? Because this is a better example for the point BOI are pretending to make. If you make a film for select multiplexes and budget it that way there’s no problem. Even if DCH was more expensive so what? That might be true for many films at any end of the production spectrum. The Yashraj example is the better one because here you had films that were releasing universally but not really doing anything outside the major markets. Eventually the numbers increased in the smaller markets because of multiplex addition not any other reason. And even so we see why masala films with the right stars or the right kind of franchise (Krrish, Dhoom etc) was able to completely destroy or outgross those films. Because these films were doing well in all kinds of markets. This is also the secret to Aamir’s success with his biggest grossers. On the other hand even with a multiplex supergrosser like YJHD you’re way behind what even a decent masala performer with proper stars gets you. Or note how ADHM recently couldn’t even do what Akshay does in small films or what he does in his own under-peforming (compared to his past attempts) comedies. The game is up for that model but it’s so for the simple reason that the films are simply not universal and never were. Except that no one was making films in the 90s and for sometime after for a more universal audience (note how RH even then outgrossed KKHH by and was vastly greater in terms of ‘footfalls’.. yes that term that BOI have started liking only recently!). This also accounts for SRK’s woes. His base films cannot gross in the same way and when he shifts genres he loses his strengths. I could go on with all this but getting back to DCH this is another example of BOI being very selective about things. One final thing here. The whole argument about universal films also cannot be made by BOI because they’ve been very dishonest supporting all sorts of Deol grossers in the past that did half-decently (usually this meant better than the nothing they were doing elsewhere!) in E Punjab. Or they have a completely North-centric view even at the best of times. Again a million examples could be cited.

There is simply no reason to ‘trust’ BOI on the numbers much less the commentary. But yes it’s out there like the stuff Taran or others throw out or like the producer numbers (these days that’s all guys like Taran do, once it was different.. they stopped putting out center numbers when let us say there were attempts on blogs, and rather professional ones, to use their numbers to arrive at results different than the ones they were presenting!) and so one looks at it and one draws whatever conclusions one wants. This is very different from saying ‘BOI’s numbers are spot-on’. Nothing could be further from the truth.

      • Not just DCH they didn’t even spare Talaash , looking at their commentary its quite visible they have a problem with Aamir khan cinema .

” Then there is Aamir Khan with Dil Chahta Hai and Talaash. Enough has been said about Dil Chahta Hai (LINK) and Talaash is probably the only poor Aamir Khan film in a decade simply because nothing is in the film, it looks like a remake of some B grade European thriller. The film grossed 92 crore nett which is again only the actor taking it there as film has only negative points. But Aamir Khan was not left alone with just two films. He was made to be a voice over of a dog in Dil Dhadakne Do which is crazy and where do these creative ideas come from? Aamir Khan may have a relationship with the makers but why be a voice over of a dog. The Hindi translation for dog is slang which led to the North Indian multiplex audience laughing for the wrong reasons every time Aamir Khan spoke as they knew it was him with the face of the dog. Again it was an emotional family drama but with a family which was not relatable so how can the film work on an emotional level. Also its not about the family being rich or from high socoiety which makes it not relatable. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001 also had a rich family but the characters were relatable which led to the emotions working in a big way. Actually it comes down to presentation. On a side note even if that huge blockbuster had a voice over by a dog it would have had a different result. “

        3. Getting numbers ‘spot on’ is a mugs game, I know this from NG. I got hammered on CDI as I had no model to estimate numbers on, my methods failed me. When TZP came out I’m sure the detractors expected me to be unethical but I recognised and persisted with CDI figures as a comparison.
        4. BOI has its favourite that should be no surprise. So do I. I do not declare Talaash a semi hit only use that term as the trade has. On my own grounds neither D3 or possibly Ghajini deserve this ATBB tag. A system where previous verdicts are corrected in line with market is fine but altering numbers as BOI has done many times is suspicious activity. Like Satyam said at the time of falsification these false numbers are used to build a propaganda narrative (a lie), which is autocorrected slyly when nobody cares. This altering of narrative is pure deceiving.
        5. BOI numbers can be perceived accurate but a basis needs to be performed. With so many contradictions like cost, shares, tags, screen counts there is no such thing as ‘spot on’ numbers.
        6. BOI is proposing propaganda that YRF films or things like K3G are utopian world and shows pathetic dislike for small films. Dissing DCH is a daft position. Of all films chosen why that one? Why not KHNH which is a joharised DCH or ADHM which is a joharised Tamasha or diss Imtiaz Ali who is simply neutralising DCH with his unique touch.
        7. The hate for Talaash should not be childishly compared to a B grade European flick when Dhoom or Krrish franchise is Z grade compared to Hollywood.
        8. Every DCH article is a middle finger to Aamir basically. It’s countered by K3G or Raees being better cinema. All hogwash.
        9. Pan India cinema exists when you consider pan India collections for a film. The irony is hilarious. Splitting Hindi from other languages is laughable. A rupee earnt in chennai in Tamil language is same as a rupee earnt in Delhi in Hindi language.

I can add more numbers and points but I’m bored.

spot on with their numbers! I always come back to the Krrish 3 example. Everyone has else has the phone 230 or whatever number…they don’t. Which movie released in the last 10 or so years have they over reported or under reported?

        • In the US you have boxofficemojo, I guarantee there are verification rules for them to follow to display figures publicly. Obviously they use producers, producers themselves will be fully audited and compliant. Fine a dollar out here or there is expected, but it’s not a ballpark figure like BOI, it’s accurate to the extent the system allows. In India it’s clear all kinds of shit goes on, corruption, fraud etc. To expect ‘spot on’ figures, would you stick your life on it?

Meanwhile for diverse cinema here is a still from Irfan’s new movie. The guy started so well but got lost in the bollywood /hollywood hype and now falls in the Naseer frustrated / cynical category. Nawaz has taken over here and is surprising everyone with each of his movies.

For all the acclamations & never ending raves on acting chops, Irfan has gotten very typecast. His basic usp remains saying the dialogue with a straight face, though he has a good bhaiyya lingo.

  90. So BOI basically boils everything to DCH and continues with its Rant. I think the site isnt anti Aamir or anything, they are just pro certain actor and go overboard with their commentary there. Like BB footfalls argument was the first thing they brought may be after 3I.

I think slowly they are having competition from the sites like Indicine and BollyArena plus the other trade analyst are reporting numbers as well. Few more years and with more multiplexes and white transactions, it will be consistent reporting.

  91. In my entire Koffee With Karan history, there’s only one person I ever gave the Rapid Fire questions to, and that was Sanjay Dutt. He was going to come with Sushmita Sen, and I knew she would really bite his head off with her answers and he would just come across looking blank because he was really nervous, and it was the very first season. I gave him the questions in advance and he won the hamper.

Where I disagree with BOI big time is with the following line:

‘It is important going forward that cinema which is not going to work is left alone and this can only happen if studios understand the audience.’

This is utter nonsense. This means that no one should be able to experiment or do the kind of cinema they want. Aamir can’t always do a Dangal and not every big movie can have pan india appeal. Sometimes we will get a Talaash or Dil Dhadakne Do and it should be cherished. BOI looks at everything with regards to money and this is not how a movie industry works.

    • And I can give in writing .. even if Bollywood start producing Indian kind of movies (as per BOI ) .. Hit/Flop ratio gonna be even worst. Issue is not about Indian content .. Issue is good and fresh content. Audience always looking for something new and fresh, which is hard to put on with dearth of talent this industry has. Heck even Raju Hirani struggling to put on something new now. DCH succeeded because of its fresh content, but follow up movies not able to take it forward barring 2-3. Ditto for most Indian movie of 90’s i.e. HAHK … the follow up of this movie mostly trashed barring DDLJ .. because all those were very poor imitations.

Even western kinda filmmaking (ZNMD, DCH, PINK, PIKU , Neerja ) can succeed if content is good .. and those Indian kinda movies can fail big time (Boss, Singh is bling, Jai Ho, Tevar etc) if content is poor.

Yup…making an ‘all india’ movie does not guarantee anything. Dhoom 3 had nothing ‘indian’ about it (except the stupid Great Indian Circus) and it still made 280 CR. There was nothing indian about KICK but it still made well over 200 CR. A production house can make a movie with Salman watching the paint dry for 3 hours and it will make over 100 CR! It’s a star driven system.

Still deciding whether to wait or spend the money.
As an aside- I think KJo’s book will not sell as many copies as Rishi Kapoor’s.
