  1. Aamir Khan –approx. 375 crore [Dangal – Current total: 373.89 crore, expected: approx. 375 crore]

Aamir Khan came, hit a six and is now counting all the moolah that is coming in! His Dangal has already set quite a few records and while 300 crore has already been surpassed and the film is already the highest grosser ever (after beating PK), the game is now big enough. As things stand today, the film is pretty much heading towards the 375 crore mark and it won’t be surprising if bigger milestones are accomplished too.

    Akshay Kumar – 364.73 crore [Airlift – 128.1 crore, Rustom– 127.49 crore, Housefull 3 – 109.14 crore]

One man who is continuing to churn out one film after another while keeping the budget and timelines under control and ensuring consistency is Akshay Kumar. He has a super-stardom of his own and that was most apparent when he became the only actor ever to score three triple centuries [Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom] in a single calendar year. As a matter of fact, he has ensured extraordinary ticket sales at 366 crore!

    Salman Khan – 300.45 crore [Sultan – 300.45 crore]

Last year, Salman Khan ruled from the top with a triple century [Bajrangi Bhaijaan] and a double century [Prem Ratan Dhan Payo], hence resulting in over 500 crore coming in. While this feat could be repeated next year too [Tubelight, Tiger Zinda Hai], this year Salman Khan maintained a healthy run rate with yet another triple century [Sultan] coming in. With this, he has maintained his Numero Uno position intact.

Shah Rukh Khan – 152.2 crore [Fan – 84.1 crore, Dear Zindagi– 68.1 crore]

Fan was a dream project but it saw a delayed release for itself. The film did open well but couldn’t really cover the distance. That said, Shahrukh Khan was pretty much appreciated for the different choices that he was making as an actor. This was reaffirmed once he agreed to be a part of an experimental niche film like Dear Zindagi which came somewhere in between a special appearance and a leading man.

Sushant Singh Rajput – 133.04 crore [M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story – 133.04 crore]

This turned out to be a major surprise of 2016! After Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, one waited to see how audiences would react to Sushant Singh Rajput playing M.S. Dhoni. Well, they were more than happy to embrace him with open arms, courtesy Neeraj Pandey’s direction that allowed the film to not just take an excellent start but also score well on a consistent note. With this, Sushant entered the 100 crore club.

  2. http://www.india-forums.com/bollywood/hot-n-happening/74073-harshvardhan-kapoor-is-unhappy-with-the-injustice-in-awards.htm

Anil Kapoor’s son, Harshvardhan Kapoor’s debut film ‘Miryza’ had failed to create its magic on the box office. Though the film had a poor performance, his hard work didn’t go unnoticed as he garnered immense praise from the audience for his performance.

He had won the ‘Star Screen Awards’ and ‘Stardust Award’ for ‘Mirzya’. But it seems that he needs to work harder to impress the jury at ‘Filmfare Awards 2016’. Harsh was nominated in the category of best debutant male but the ‘Black lady’ was conferred to actor Diljit Dosanjh for his stint in ‘Udta Punjab’.

The actor was disappointed by the jury’s decision as his expectations were left unfulfilled. He was also disheartened by the fact that the award was given to Diljit.

A popular tabloid quoted him stating, “Although I picked up two debutant awards earlier, I was really looking forward to winning the black lady. But I guess every awards event has its own parameters. I’ll be honest, though. I think a debutant award is meant for someone working on his first film. It shouldn’t go to an actor who has worked in several films in another language”.

Harshvardhan stated that Diljit has a good hands-on experience of working in films from other industries and as such considering him for a debutant award is an injustice.

He further quotes that, “For instance, if Leonardo DiCaprio works in Hindi film, is he making an acting debut? He has already worked in so many films”.

However, going by the proverb ‘let by gones be by gones’, the actor is unfettered by his past experience and focusses on moving ahead only to excel in his career.

The actor is currently working on Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Bhavesh Joshi’.

      • Due to multiplex boom, single screens are struggling making losses. Their existence has become difficult. They are on verge of closure. Content of films are also responsible for this state.

Recent note ban also contributed to lock down of single screen theaters
Recently released Aamir Khan movie Dangal helped many such single screens theaters from closure since they were profitable due to movie Dangal. Some of the theatre owners wrote a thank you note to Aamir.

Congratulating Aamir on the super success of Dangal, some of such owners mentioned that they collected profits from dangal more than all other films in the whole year. They say Dangal has brought them relief.

This note is an achievement for Aamir.especially in times when the theatres are struggling for existence for helping them survive they thanked Aamir through their note

  4. His father has certainly not been so circumspect, in fact he has been upset that Raees rescheduled itself from its original release date of July 2016 – effectively backing down from a showdown with Salman Khan’s Sultan – to January 26, 2017, which was the date Kaabil had booked. Then, when Kaabil announced it would release the day earlier, Raees said it would do the same. Until yesterday, a few hours separated the films. Now, Kaabil appears to be taking the fight to Raees.

Hrithik explained to us why Rakesh Roshan was ‘surprised’ by the clash. “My dad has very carefully chosen the date on January 26, knowing this film would have been ready by October. Still he waited till January because he was seeing that we should not clash with somebody else’s film. So let us not come on this person’s date or that person’s date. So let me make a date which is completely clear right now. So he picked January 26. He wants others to do unto him as he has done unto them. So when you don’t get that, it’s a bit of a surprise,” Hrithik said.

  5. Dangal Has Second Highest Fourth Week Of All Time
    Friday 20 January 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dangal (Hindi) had another strong week as it grossed 14.50 crore nett in its fourth week. The drop in the fourth week is 67% from the third week. The fourth week collections are the second highest of all time after the 15.95 crore nett of 3 Idiots in 2009. The film has managed to collect higher than both PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan in the fourth week and it will be another good week if the film can beat those films again in the fifth week. PK had grossed 4.17 crore nett in its fifth week and Bajrangi Bhaijaan grossed 3.78 crore so they are not huge tasks especially as its an open week with no major release. It will be a shortened fifth week as Kaabil and Raees are coming on Wednesday though Dangal is doing most of its weekly business on Saturday and Sunday. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,38,00,000
    Second Week – 1,11,56,00,000
    Third Week – 44,02,00,000
    Fourth Week – 14,50,00,000 apprx

    GRAND TOTAL – 3,62,46,00,000 apprx

The lifetime business of the film will probably fall a little short of 370 crore nett. The Tamil and Telugu versions have grossed a further 12.25 crore nett as they were not playing at the beginning of the week when the big South Indian films releases but some prints came into play as the week progressed allowing it to do around 35 lakh nett business.

The film will cross the benchmark of 380 crores by the end of its 5th week at the box office which is commendable.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra in key roles.

  7. Why Harshvardhan Kapoor needs to stop trolling Diljit Dosanjh

Why Harshvardhan Kapoor needs to stop trolling Diljit Dosanjh
Harshvardhan Kapoor is trolling Diljit Dosanjh alleging that he didn’t deserve the Filmfare best debutante award since he has worked in Punjabi films before. Wonder why he didn’t complain when Diljit was nominated for the same award at the Stardust Awards (which was ‘won’ by Harshwardhan). The entire concept of award shows is ridiculous. They are at best entertainment programmes that serve some good humour and fine performances. Yes you also get to see the cream of Bollywood in all their glory-and-glam.

Harshvardhan Kapoor’s performance in Mirzya was below average. The movie was a huge disaster at the box office. He should watch the Public Opinion videos and see for himself how nasty few of the comments were, especially about his disinterested performance. It was shocking when he was awarded the best debutante award at Star Screen Awards and Stardust Awards. Many felt that Sonam Kapoor had to sacrifice her best actress award at Star Screen for her brother to get his share of ‘recognition’. It is a well-known fact that many of the popular awards are pre-decided. The moment you see a particular big celebrity who is usually not seen at film events, you know it that he must be winning something at the award show.

Diljit Dosanjh is a tremendous talent. Yes he is a big star in Punjab and he was seen in the song ‘Pee Pa Pee Pa’ in Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya (2012) but Udta Punjab was when the Hindi movie audience witnessed his brilliance for the first time. By all standards he qualifies for the best debutante award. In fact Harshvardhan might have got ‘lucky’ with Filmfare best debutante too (the way he did with the other two award shows) , if only Amal Malik’s much talked about open letter on the hypocrisy hadn’t questioned why Diljit was being ignored in favour of a performance that very few people watched. Harsh needs to concentrate on improving his acting skills and can take heart from the fact that even though Aamir Khan has been awarded the best actor award at the Filmfare Awards, he won’t be tomtomming about it and won’t be accepting it either. It is the work that will live on and not the fake awards. Think about it.

  8. Dangal actress Zaira Wasim rebuffs Vijay Goel, says women in hijab are beautiful and free

Zaira is already at the centre of a controversy for meeting J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti
“I request you not to connect me to such a discourteous depiction,” she tweeted
“Women in hijab are beautiful and free,” the 16-year-old responded to Goel’s tweet

HYDERABAD: ‘Dangal’ star Zaira Wasim from Jammu and Kashmir has rebuffed Union minister for sports and youth affairs Vijay Goel on Friday for a comment that he made about her.
The 16-year-old responded to a tweet of Vijay Goel who posted a picture of him with a painting of a woman in burkha.

“This painting tells a story similar to that of Zaira Wasim,” he said tagging the young actress on Twitter.

Zaira Wasim, who is already at the centre of a controversy facing flak for meeting J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, was quick to react to Vijay Goel’s tweet which also read, “More power to our daughters!”
Addressing him as ‘sir’ in her response, Zaira Wasim said: “Sir, with all respect to you, I feel I must disagree. I request you not to connect me to such a discourteous depiction. Women in hijab are beautiful and free. Moreover, the story depicted through this painting is not even remotely relevant to mine,” she said.

  10. The Zaira controversy in a subliminal sense sits well with the theme of Secret Superstar. She was probably offended enough to react to that photo. I don’t blame her, but she should be careful about what she puts up on social media. I think Aamir must ensure she gets PR support and does not talk out of turn. She is a star, and there is plenty of interest in her as an actor/person.

    • According to BOI and others, Sultan had 3 trillion footfalls and almost all of it from Single Screens. Which is majority of that 300+ crores it collected are from SS. You know, bhai is the ruler of SS. Did the owners squander all that money in 4months? Kidding.

This clearly tells me that SS collection estimation is so random and 300 Cr Net total may not be very accurate. Wonder what the deviation could be.

        • It smells fishy when a movie is decimating every record in site by almost 75% yet its footfalls are up by just 25%?? Back in 2009 single screens had a significant pie in overall screens share, so it was not as if 3 Idiots was a multiplex phenomenon confined to 20 cities across India but it was universally accepted movie across age, gender, class & region, yet it doesn’t get its due from propaganda sites such as BOI through their prejudiced commentary & convenient fact twisting as per their whims & fancies!! No. alone don’t show the whole picture as there are multiple variables involved in declaring movies as hits or flops, so Ra-1 making 114 Crore is just presenting a half picture unless its budget is also brought to public which is a must to arrive at hit or flop verdict!! But propaganda sites such as BOI peddle lies in the name of box office reporting through their specious & duplicitous commentary!! Dangal has done which is unprecedented in Hindi film industry as there has never been a movie in its history which didn’t have romance yet went on to become all-time highest grosser, not one!! It had only & only one name to take it dus far where it is today on the shoulders of Aamir Khan, yet not one mention of this very fact by BOI!! It opened with fabulous no. on its very 1st day despite no chartbuster song or known name in its casting yet i have yet to read an article regarding its 1st day real value as it was a normal working day which BOI used to come up every time after Bhai’s Eid release citing Muslims non turn out to be sole reason behind his movies 1st day & weekend no. !! For one Talaash their write up suggests as if they are writing obituary!! But Jai Ho, HNY, Ra-1 collections don’t force them to write just a single article!! SRK is still at No. 2 for BOI & Indicine despite delivering flops & under-performers?? Yet thecooldude can’t see through their one sided commentary & agenda is perplexing!!

        • There was plenty of articles at time of both Ghajini & 3 Idiots suggesting the films did well in small centres. Anyway footfall for me is dumb concept. How can anyone deduce that if inflated ticket prices were lowered then less or more people would watch a film.

The final total is all that matters. The # of people depends on pricing. Who is to say if P.K was priced similar to BB it would not achieve similar or more footfalls.

The introduction of this parameter is only to devalue one star over another.

In layman’s terms if TZH ticket price was 500 CR and one person paid for it, it’s the record. Shit trending but it’s the top grosser. It’s a statement of fact.

  12. Ahead of Trump inauguration, this is what Aamir Khan has to say

Prashant Singh, Hindustan Times, Mumbai | Updated: Jan 20, 2017 18:58 IST

He has just delivered the highest-earning Hindi film ever. But interestingly, instead of basking in the glory, Aamir Khan quietly flew out to an undisclosed location. “I try not to reveal where I am, as people will start coming here too. Right now, I am trying to be alone (laughs),” says the superstar, as he talks about his career and his latest blockbuster, Dangal.

As A-list celebrities, including Hollywood actors Robert de Niro and Alec Baldwin, Oscar-winning director Michael Moore and singer Cher, joined several thousand protesters on the streets of New York on Thursday night to protest against Donald Trump on the eve of the incoming Republican president’s inauguration, Aamir also opened up about actress Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes targetting Trump. Speaking about the beauty of American democracy, calling it vibrant, the Dangal actor said that in that in the US everyone is equal, they can say what they want and voice their opinions: They can make fun of the President, make comments or criticise what he is doing.

In one of your first-ever interviews (from the ’80s) you said, ‘My performance will be my publicity…’, which holds true even now…

I have always believed that your work speaks for you. And if you work consistently and in a particular manner over time, it has an impact on people. As an actor, that’s all you need to do.
In the same interview, you also said that being typecast can make you feel claustrophobic…

Yes, it will be very boring for me. Same role kitni baar karunga? (How many times will I play the same role?) I don’t like to be stuck in any one image. I want to change myself, surprise my audiences, and even myself. In fact, I want to challenge myself, so I don’t like to do the same things again.

This year, you will complete 29 years in the industry, since your debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT; 1988). Do you look back at your journey?

Yes, I do. I think I have been very fortunate that I have had the opportunity to work with wonderful writers and directors, who came to me with their unique scripts. And I also got to learn so much from them. So, it’s my good fortune to have worked in films such as Lagaan (2001), Taare Zameen Par (2007), Rang De Basanti (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), QSQT, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) and Sarfarosh (1999). It has been a very exciting and fulfilling journey. When I look back at my career, all my decisions — on the face of it — have mostly been impractical and risky, with the latest instance being Dangal (2016). I feel someone up there is looking out for me because I am certainly not looking out for myself (laughs). Also, I have been able to do [the kind of] work that I believe in. Not all of us are lucky enough to be in the position where you can choose to do what you want. I feel very grateful to be in that position. I am able to do the work that I love.

Recently, Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes started a discussion about Indian stars not talking openly about real issues…

I feel America, as a democracy, has always been a vibrant one from this point of view. People have been free to air their opinions on anything (topic) or anyone including the President. Stand-up comics can often make fun of the President, make comments or criticise what he is doing. And that’s the beauty of the democracy, where everyone is equal, where you can say what you want and voice your opinions. People may or may not agree but that’s how democracies ought to be and should be.

Aamir Khan’s Ghajini started the Rs 100 crore club. ( HT Photo )

A number of exhibitors and distributors are ecstatic with the response to your latest film. They have, in fact, also sent you letters…

It’s very humbling. And it’s satisfying to see everyone in the system happy vis-à-vis money is concerned. I feel all these things are byproducts of a good film. But I don’t do films keeping numbers in mind. As an actor, I don’t even know the business of the films that I have seen, such as Pyaasa (1957), Teesri Manzil (1966), Mother India (1957), Mughal-E-Azam (1960) and Do Aankhen Bara Haath (1957). I am not interested in numbers.

A few weeks back, incidents such as the Bangalore molestation shocked many. Is women safety a concern for you too?

Of course, such incidents are disturbing and unfortunate. It’s shameful that they happen. My heart goes out to the girls who had to go through such awful behaviour. More importantly, we should realise that the person who is a survivor – the girls in this case – have done nothing wrong. People who committed these acts need to be ashamed of what they have done.

Coming back to films, due to the high expectations from you, do you ever feel pressurised?

When I sign a film, the pressure [of expectation] isn’t on me. I pick films based on how I react to a script. When a script interests me, I don’t think of the box office [collections]; and the case in point being Taare Zameen Par (2007) or Dangal (2016). They are unusual and not conventional, mainstream films. I don’t think of money or the box office [collections] when I decide to do a film. However, the last couple of weeks before a film releases, are nerve-wracking and pressurising. It’s then that I start realising that the expectations are high. I am unaware of what people are expecting or imagining. But I can’t do anything about it later, as I have already made the film that I wanted to.

Do you pay heed to the comparisons drawn between films starring Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and you?

No, I don’t because I feel every film is unique. I don’t believe in comparing as I am not a very competitive person from that point of view. When I see my colleagues doing good work, it doesn’t make me feel like, ‘Arrey, usne mere se better kiya hai (oh, he did a better job than me) so, I need to be even better.’ When I see good work, I feel happy for my colleagues, including Ranveer (Singh) or Ranbir (Kapoor). I also loved Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) in the Munna Bhai series. It makes you feel so proud and happy to see that your colleagues are doing so well. If I am competing with anyone at all, it’s myself. I want to better myself and do better than what I did last time. I want to learn and grow as an actor.

You started all the ‘crore clubs’ — Rs 100 crore with Ghajini (2008); Rs 200 crore with 3 Idiots (2009); Rs 250 crore with Dhoom:3 (2013) and Rs 300 crore with PK (2014)…

I haven’t started any club (laughs). It’s the media that has started all of it. It’s a coincidence and I never even think about it. Let me put it this way: I am doing films that I love doing. I am enjoying my work. Whatever else is happening is a byproduct of it. Plus, it’s happening on its own. I believe in what Rancho says in 3 Idiots, ‘Chase excellence and success will follow you’.

  13. Dangal Continues Exceptional Run
    Saturday 21 January 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dangal (Hindi) continued with its exceptional run at the box office with excellent collections on its fifth Friday which was the third highest of all time after 3 Idiots (1.75 crore) and Gadar Ek Prem Katha (1.25 crore). The fifth Friday collections are far better than the figures of PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan which are the biggest hits of recent times. The film has hardly dropped from Thursday which is the first time that has happened since it released. Normally Friday saw a 15-20% drop from the Thursday. It has helped that the holdover films had falling collections and the new releases are poor. It did look like the fifth week would not be among the biggest but now it could be among top five or top three fifth weeks which is phenomenal. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,38,00,000
    Second Week – 1,11,56,00,000
    Third Week – 44,02,00,000

Dangal – Second Biggest This Century Biggest This Decade

Dangal is among the mega blockbusters of of this century. After four weeks its stands in third position after Gadar Ek Prem Katha, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and ahead of PK and 3 Idiots. So it is already the biggest Aamir Khan blockbuster this century. It will probably beat Bajrangi Bhaijaan any day soon if it has not already done on fifth Friday as the Dangal footfalls cross the Bajrangi Bhaijaan footfalls. It will not reach Gadar Ek Prem Katha so will become the second biggest blockbuster this century but the biggest blockbuster this decade and of the multiplex era. The fourth week figures of Dangal (Hindi) were the second highest ever and when big wide releases start making an impact in fourth and fifth week charts it means the film has worked in a big way across the board. Dangal makes it four films above 10 crore nett in week four with the other three being 3 Idiots, PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. • Gadar was full scale release. Unlike HAHK for e.g., it was full blown release on its day 1. I think there was a BOI column on it last year saying that it was a first full scale release that trended that well. The column affirmed that during the previous decades, movies released gradually with limited screens in week 1 and then additional prints and screens coming in during week 2 and fiurther on. But Gadar was as much a full scale release as you get for a movie of its time. It released in practically as many screens as Lagaan.

I think it did around 8.8cr in its first week and then went above 9cr in its 2nd and remained quite stable for 9-10 weeks.

The other day, I was thinking about what Lagaan’s prospects could be in today’s time. What if Lagaan released today? It is a practically flawless movie with all the necessary elements. It is certainly much better than Dangal and PK. What if it released in today’s times? I think it could have shattered records and take them to really unprecedented levels like 3 Idiots did a few years back.

    • Another bunch of cow dung. They are pretending that BB is a bigger hit than 3 idiots? When blockbuster movies were collecting 75 chores, 3 Idiots collected 200+ barring Ghajini. I remember that Ghajini was a big SS success but 3 Idiots did even better in SS and broke records in all territories by a huge margin. BB didn’t do none of that stuff yet bigger crown puller than 3 Idiots? No one crossed 100 crore for a long time let alone 200 crore mark. Which stood for more than 4 years. I think Rajneeti was the first non Aamir 100cr movie, that came much later but total was below Ghajini.

Hard to believe unless there was some kind of world war that ended after 3 Idiots and before BB. Junk article totally cooked up in someone’s looney rain or BOI’s moms basement by some pimple faced teenager.

  15. Dangal Crosses 375 Cr Mark | 5th Friday Collections
    By Koimoi.com Team -January 21, 2017

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is truly unstoppable. The film collected 1.19 crores on its 5th Friday. It now stands with a collection of 376.14 crores at the domestic box office.

Dangal is now the first film to make it to the 375 crore mark. It is also Aamir Khan’s highest grosser of all time.

Tubelight is the only one, if made on the levels of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, then it can do something near that range. But it is a big ‘if’. I really can’t see anything coming near the 370cr of Dangal right now. Maybe Aamir himself can do it again with Thugs of Hindostan. But even with that project, I have doubts especially because of the director and being a YR banner film which do not guarantee path-breaking cinema. Before that, I can see only Tubelight having potential of coming anywhere near.

I’m guessing 3 Idiots is the only other film that has managed 1+ CR each day in its run so far unadjusted inflation. Sat and Sun will continue that for 31 straight days.

Its rather steep from doing 300cr in just about 12-13 days to later limping to 70 odd cr in the next 20 odd days.

Again not a perfect /ideal example for trending steamrollers.

It did not reach beyond traditional and regular Bollywood going audience and basically shows it churned the same set of audience in repeat mode for first 10 days to reach 300 cr and after that it met the same fate as other big movies of last few years.

        • I think Dangal performance is second best after 3 idiots in the last 10 years or so. With the ever increasing number of screens its difficult to maintain long term momentum. 3 idiots trended way better but it had unconsumed audiences in later weeks. The repeat viewing section is a very small chunk of audience, so that can’t drive the film for long.

In percentage terms its performing 20-25 percent better than Bajrangi bhaijaan which is an achievement in itself. But yes it’s not an outlier like 3 idiots which is the biggest hit by a distance.

        • How is that a free run? There were two releases last week and they took major chunk of screens. This free run excuse is absolute trash.

No one is even talking about demonetisation. The underperformance in single screens has to do with demonetisation.

  21. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who among his many candid confessions about his life via his book “Khullam Khulla”, has opened up about a past meeting with India’s most wanted fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, says he has no regrets about having met the underworld don.

In an interview on India Today TV, Rishi was asked by anchor Rajdeep Sardesai about his meeting with Ibrahim in Dubai in 1988.

“What was regretful about it,” Rishi retorted.

He narrated how when he had landed in Dubai for a show with R.D. Burman, Asha Bhosle and Bittu Anand, a person came to him with a phone and said “Bhai baat karenge”.

“He invited me over for tea… I went to his house, thinking there was nothing wrong because he just a fugitive, he had not done the menace…,” Rishi said.

When his comment was interrupted by Sardesai with “but he (Dawood) was still a criminal”, Rishi said: “So what? I meet so many criminals in my life… Maybe I am also a criminal, but I may have not committed any serious crime. But yes, as an actor I thought I would like to know his story.

“I did so much of him in ‘D-Day’, I was inspired by him for playing that role.”

Rishi said he had a “couple of cups of tea” with Dawood in their around four hour-long meeting.

“He also said that he didn’t think he would get justice in India.”

The meeting happened before the 1993 Mumbai blasts. But he was still a criminal wanted by the law.

Rishi said there was “nothing wrong at all” in meeting Dawood as he feels he can “derive inspiration from these kind of people for films sometimes”.

“He just asked me for tea, and even said, ‘Sorry I didn’t call you in the evening for a drink because I don’t drink’.”

Asked if he is still in touch with the don, Rishi said: “No, there is no contact.”

The veteran actor, who belongs to Bollywood’s famed Kapoor family, also ruled out any underworld connect with the present-day film industry.

“I don’t think we have any connect with underworld… We are a clean system, with corporate money and bank finances now.”

But Bollywood had strong underworld links in the 1990s?

“Maybe so…” he said, and then narrated how Dawood had sent one representative to his Mumbai house to pay condolence a day after his father Raj Kapoor had died in June 1988.

He said Dawood was a great admirer of his father, a legendary actor and filmmaker.

Did Dawood buy him any gifts?

“Never… But he offered me and asked me, ‘Can I get you something?’ I said ‘No, why would you get me anything? I can afford what I want’.”

Further justifying his meeting with Dawood, Rishi said: “I am not a hypocrite — there’s nothing wrong (with having met him). People go to prisons to meet criminals.. I met him in a foreign country. By that time, he had not gone against our country — at least not done something as grave as he did later.”

Meanwhile ad promos for both the movies have crossed all levels of decency and coming one after the other on TV every 5 minute.

I am a bit surprised on Ghajini comparison since there is Sanjay Gupta at the helm and going by his part Korean record.
( Jazba was such a poor copy and the movie turned out much worse than Aishwarya’s acting.) Lets be frank HR is in no position to do an Aamir of Ghajini for reasons too tedious to explain here. Yes a good wom will help him stabilize the movie for 5 day weekend but that’s about it. This movie is hardly going ahead much more than Sunday and Roshans may consider themselves lucky if the movie gets to even 100 cr lifetime.

Raees will not only open better but even a poor wom will put it past 120 cr lifetime total at the very least . Ideally Raees should have been the movie to get back SRK in the new groove and it all depends how true to the script they remain. Since inception I have been hoping this remains a low key movie and more of Dholakia then SRK is visible in the movie. If all the ott hoopla currently is only on opening and rest of the movie is dry and strictly script based, then it should cut fine looking at audience present state of mind.

In more ways than other I feel SRK is going to find his real comfort level with Imtiaz’s movie. He bounces off well against an intelligent heroine and Anushka pairing there will be the usp.

I watched SILENCE last night by Marty. What a ‘personal’, astounding, and ‘minimalist’ movie. If one were to compare TWOWS with this, it hits your face with the schizophrenic tendencies of Marty as devoted to the subject as well as his directorial capabilities,

If everything is well, I might write on it. But suffice it to say that this is one of the most intriguing films of Marty.

A very, very subjective movie. Eminently watchable in a very personal sense. Andrew Garfield, God bless him, was never in my favorite actors’ list, but by God, whether the one on screen or otherwise, a performance to remember for ages…

Finally saw ‘Dangal’ Yesterday and i am going to commit blasphemy for this site (Aamir is GOD na) Chak De India is still the best film on Sports with cracking essemble cast. In CDI there were very few scene that was filmy. Some great dilouge (Mujhe na no koi state dikhi deta hai, Na sunai deta hai. Main ek hi cheej janta houn INDIA, Is team main ek hi gunda ho sakta hai or wo main houn and that “Wo 70 miniute” motivational speech). On the climax Kabir khan lets the girl hog the all limelight. In Dangal There are many filmy scenes and the last scene, where they lock Aamir in the room, i found cringeworthy and Mahaveer phogat take all credit for Geeta’s success with caricatured portayel of wrestling coach. In some parts i felt restless. To the horror of many here i found ‘SULTAN’ more entertaining then Dangal. Though some scenc are quite imotional Like when Aamir says ‘Main ya to papa ban sakta houn ya coach’, or that Hair cutting scene or when Geeta says to her father that his wrestling techniche is outdated and when Geeta talked her father on phone.

So the question is How Dangal did almost 400 cr buisness. The biggest reason for it is “”AAMIR KHAN””…There is no if and but about that. Aamir has gained tremendous respect of people with his hard work. Dispite giving ATBB like 3 idiot he takes 3 year to make his next film. No urgency no cash his stardom. He transforms himself for every role. It is not easy to put so much weight for a role then lose it. So Respect for Aamir is there. Take any other hero in place of Aamir and Dangal’s buisness won’t be same.

Now this brings me to my main point. Like they say Shane warne was the best captain Australia never had. I will say Abhishek Bachchan was or is one of the brightest star who didn’t reach his true potential. Abhishek has everything what is needed to be a superstar. He is tall, Dark, Handsome, Great voice, Allrounded actor. Fit in every role (Action, Romance, Drama, Comedy). There were many reason for this but according to me the main reason of this Abhishek always came accross as a lazy star in screen. It never looked that he put blood and sweat on any role. We are living in a time where general people don’t like them who are born with silver spoon. Nowadays people respect selfmaid mens. So it is neccesary to put extra hard work if you are born with silver spoon. but Abhishek took it easy (as far as he came across on screen). That unsaven beard, that paunch, there is no focus on fitness. I am not saying that these are the most importent thing for an actor. but if you are down atleast do something tthat proves that you are doning hard work. There is fire in your belly. But Abhishek never seemd to worry that he is disturbed with his sinking carear. He is happy to be Amitabh and Jaya’s son and Aishwarys’s Hubby. Always a great fan of Abhishek. Always feel sorry for him. Now i think he missed the bus.

        • Well for me Dangal was a near perfect film. The only negative being the one note depiction of the coach. But may be they didn’t have that much time to evolve the character, making it more meatier could have created length issues.

A film like Dangal is way difficult to make then a Chak De India. To find a semblance between commercial and artistic aspect isn’t easy. To make it appeal to wider audiences you have to take cinematic liberties, you need to manipulate viewer so that he/she feel connected to it. It widens the appeal of the film and finds resonance with majority of the audiences whether from towns or cities.

A Chak De India or Lagaan will always find it difficult to appeal to small city audiences or may be families because their purpose of watching movies is different.

For example Lagaan for me is the best film I have ever seen , I just marvel how come such subject could be transformed into a terrific screenplay, but my sister doesn’t feel that way , for her to absorb a cricket match of 1.5 hrs was a tedious task, it’s same with my father and mother, but they all loved Dangal. This all suggest to enlarge your audiences you need to work at multiple level and more importantly on relationship level ( for e.g. In Dangal it was father-daughter relationship).

  25. For a film to work in a big way it needs to strike a chord with the average viewer in a big way. Ardent cinema lovers have tendency to over analyse a movie which is not the subject of regular audience. Chak De India was a great product no doubt about that but it lacked the wider appeal that Dangal had. A Chak De India even if released today wouldn’t have done more business than Dangal, because it didnt had the same emotional connect as Dangal.

For the filmy scenes I suppose the director and the writer very well knows the purpose of the same, but its more about how the narrative flows, howsoever the climax was filmy but I think majority of the audience found a connect with that.
A commercial film needs to connect with majority of the audience ( say like more than70 % or 80%), if it does the purpose is solved. You can’t satisfy every single audience. Majority of the people I have met have loved Dangal like anything, for them it’s way better than Sultan, and I certainly know they don’t compare the films like we do, for example they don’t care whether it’s the best film of the century or decade or whatever. I strongly believe Aamir is not the sole reason for huge success, the film has its merit to emerge victorious.

I think Lagaan is the best Sports film , better than Chak De India but even it wouldn’t have worked today the way Dangal did. It is a great film but definitely have some commercial restrictions. Dangal worked with female audiences way more than Chak De India or Dangal

The legendary blockbuster Gadar Ek Prem Katha released way back in 2001 still finds a spot in the top ten fourth week collections in 7th position. Dangal (Hindi) took full advantage of the poor competition and recorded the second highest fifth weekend of all time. The film grossed 5.85 crore nett which is only 3 Idiots which grossed 6.25 crore nett. This is extraordinary considering how big the opening week numbers and patterns of business today. The tax exemptions are helping keep collections strong in Delhi UP and East Punjab while lack of competition of competition outside South India keeps the film going in other circuits. The film has grossed 368 crore nett now and will end its fifth week at around 370 crore nett. The sixth week will see the biggest fall in its run as Kaabil and Raees release but it may be able to add a crore or two depending on the screen scenario. Ok Jaanu dropped in its second weekend grossing around 2.50-2.75 crore nett but it could have been much worse if there were some decent new releases. The film has grossed a little under 20 crore nett now and has two more days to a little bit more business for a lifetime finish of around 21 crore nett. • I think I agree with this assessment. So far Raees looks good but it is possible that, it could be empty inside. The delay of all sorts give me this impression. Even the film works, it could be a 175-200cr affair.

As far as Kaabil is concerned, subject looks heavy. If the audience does not connect with the characters it will bomb. If it does what is expected of it, I.e best case would be a 150 crore. Which means it should trend very well.

IMO So both put together still would fall short. If we consider no favorable period or festive additional days unlike winter break, summer etc. big totals after extended weekend are not easy to come. But hey, I could be totally wrong and would love to be wrong.

  49. The new cricketing sensation of India is big on Salman and that explains his swashbuckling display on field –

“…..Cricketers, unlike their cousins in the other bat and ball game across the Atlantic, baseball, don’t wear belts around their waists. But that didn’t stop Kedar Jadhav on Tuesday from imagining he was wearing one, just like, believe it or not, Salman Khan in Dabangg.

When he got to his maiden three-figure mark, in the final over of the innings, Jadhav roared at the dressing room in the usual way. A bat punch in the air and a fist punch towards the dressing room. But what occurred next was anything but usual.

Jadhav dropped his bat and held his fists by his waist, like clutching an imaginary belt, and pulled off a little jig. And his mind, he later admitted, was belting (don’t miss the pun) out the song’s chorus. ‘Hudd Hudd Dabangg Dabangg Dabangg Dabangg’.

    Excerpts from the interview.

    What was the celebration about?
(Laughs) Obviously, from Dabangg. I’m a big Salman Khan fan so I always dreamed of doing such things. This was the best occasion to let him know that I’m his fan. The move was from the movie’s title track……”

  55. I would like both SRK and Hritik to win. Problem with SRK is that he seems to try too hard. He should not cheapen his film by appearing on every tv show. He has to my knowledge, appeared on two or three — Big Boss, Kapil Sharma’s comedy show, something else…. and now this well publicised train trip that has already led to one death thru stampede.😐

  56. I agree, appearing on any and every random TV show downgrades the star and the film. I was surprised to see him give interviews to just about everyone. This carpet bombing approach shows a lack of direction but more importantly, it could signify a certain desperation.

You don’t need so many interviews, and you don’t need to go to ALL the shows.

    • Where you heard these horrible reports of Raees? There was just one screening few before for trade people/ exhibitors and everybody was tight lipped. This seems to be a good strategy by makers which is working in its favour. There will be two screenings tonight, one for press and another for vast and crew. So, you can expect feed back after those screenings only.

  58. Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar remembers renowned Urdu poet and lyricist Jaswant Rai Sharma, known to the world by his pen name Naqsh Lyallpuri, and says that he wrote one of her most memorable ghazals “Rasm-e-Ulfat Ko Nibhayen”

“I was not as close to Naqsh Saab as I was to Majrooh Sultanpuri Saab. But I would meet him at many of my recordings. He wrote some of my most beautiful songs including three of my personal favourites, Sapan-Jagmohan’s ‘Ulfat mein zamanein ki harr rasm ko thukrao'(Call Girl), Jaidev’s ‘Tumhe dekhti hoon toh lagta hai aise ke jaise yugon se tumhe jaanti hoon'(from Basu Chatterjee’s Tumhare Liye) and Madan Mohan’s ‘Rasm-e-ulfat ko nibhayen toh nibhayen kaise'(from B R Ishara’s Dil Ki Raahen).

“I vividly remember these recordings because the poetry was so heartstopping in its beauty. The lyrics were beautifully romantic. The words were simple and eloquent. Over the years I must have sung dozens of Naqsh Saab’s lyrics. I remember him sitting quietly at the recordings just listening to my singing,” said Lata.

The melody queen also says that the song was one of the biggest challenges for her as a singer.

“It was a very difficult number to put across. What a composition and what lyrics! I’d say I contributed very little to its overall beauty. I can’t remember the last time I sang one of Naqsh Saab’s songs. But I remember his quiet attentive unobtrusive presence at every recording,” she said.

Lyallpuri was 89. He had been ailing for some time and breathed his last at his Andheri home on January 22.

Born in Lyallpur in the part of Punjab now in Pakistan, Lyallpuri came to Mumbai in the late 1940s to make a career in Hindi cinema. Though he got his first break in 1952 as a song writer, real success eluded him till the early 1970s.

He also worked with the postal department for some time to make ends meet during his early struggling days in Mumbai.

In other words prices are higher by 1.7648/1.3236 on average according to BOI if FF’s were same.

      • Also even in UK this is hard to track. One leading multiplex chain offers a monthly charge for unlimited movies. So I could watch X film, many times, the chain will receipt my attendance but I have diluted collections many times too. So seriously just don’t follow FF debate, it’s clearly timed to deviate from the records that are being set up by Father Aamir during Xmas. Also in UK ticket prices for children are nearly half, not sure for India.

To track FF’s you need every bit of data and integrity in the system. India simply doesn’t, these are nothing but back of the envelope calculations and dubious in there accurately measured ATP to 2 decimals.
