  1. Very good teaser, certainly more than the expectations. Such roles bring out the SRK having fun with the character and displays lot of confidence.

Btw, does anyone know who is playing the baniye they are talking abt here?

That baniya is Aamir and daring miyanbhai is Salman. Basically, Raees is combo of Aamir’s brain and Salman’s attitude! 🙂

  7. They’ve released the trailer/teaser more than a year before its release. What’s the point? I felt the Fan trailer arrived a bit too early but a few days later, the Raees trailer is now released. The last time SRK opted for such a lengthy promo campaign (with Ra1), it didn’t turn out too well.

    • I reckon the idea was to just introduce it to the audience, much like the Sultan announcement trailer. I guess SRK felt the need to make the audience aware/reiterate that his film was also coming on Eid 2016.

      • Also, with Ra. One, it was the film that was poor. I thought it was well promoted (1001 tie ins was pretty tiresome and needless though)

      • Agree here. I think it’s the opposite with SRK. The bad trailers end up being of films that I enjoy. I thought Chennai Express was the worst trailer ever from SRK. But I enjoyed that film more than all his recent films. Similarly, Don 2 had an excellent teaser, JTHJ was pretty good but both those films were boring. I think only HNY had a trailer that was as average as the film. FAN and Raees both look very intriguing but so did MNIK, Don 2, JTHJ. At least these directors are new for SRK.

I remember when Ra1’s teaser first came out, a section of the media was saying that the makers of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible were having sleepless nights because of the prospect of facing Ra1 at the BO. I even read a review of Ra1’s teaser somewhere where it was being claimed that Ra1’s teaser was looking far more impressive than Captain America’s trailer!

    • Well the initial teasers for Ra. One where pretty effective, it built the hype up which was it was supposed to do! The fact that the film was rubbish is beyond the point. A teaser is meant to ‘tease’ and in many ways (and for many, many films) promise what is has no hope of delivering, so that it can get those naive enough to buy a ticket!

Well the audience may have fun with all this but never turn up for the actual movie like it has been with past well attended promo launches and hyperbole advertising leading up to the release.

I have not seen Dholakia work and don’t know which srk will turn out for this one as there is potential for a overdone ‘Raam’ Jaane in ‘Khalifah’ mode….somehow srk always overplays the gangsta bit on screen and never gets the ruffian right whether it was Duplicate or a Don 1 & 2 or for that matter the mobster of Dilwale too seemed overdone. Wish the anti hero of a Darr is hiden somewhere in Mr. Raees.

    • This is a movie made for Eid…Ridiculous they let go off that date…UP and Gujrat single screens will rock big time..But in SRK’s case it is always the movies that let him down, not the trailor or the opening….
Either ways I can see Rakesh Roshan getting worried after seeing this….
If the movie is as good as the trailor, 250 will be cake walk…Such massy movies can make the clash irrelevant after first 3-4 days…A very good example is Puli Murugan which released along with 3 other movies – one Mamooty and one Prithviraj movies…Today Puli Murugan is close to 100cr in Kerala alone…The clash affected the initial but in long run nothing really could stand to it as the masses took it to a new level…

      • I see neither film getting past 200 crores. Kaabil is a disaster waiting to happen, Raees has a shot if released earlier like you said. It can milk it before and after Kaabil’s initial. The business men in Bollywood are very stupid. Two clean weeks is better than one holiday. Films like ‘Pink’ have proved it and these are the so called limited audience films.

        • @” The business men in Bollywood are very stupid. Two clean weeks is better than one holiday.”

But what happens if there is no audience for those two clean weeks and movie fizzles out……what is the excuse then for all that has been written or the media glorifications / exaggerations of the superstardom…..

These are called human fragilities. I would not call it ego per se but their own insecurities or something to fall back until the going gets good again…..clash is also an escape route and prevents them being written off……bhai movie pit gayi due to clash is easier defined than giving a flop winding up even below 100cr. Once the weekends are done even 100cr seem like a grind in many cases. Mohenjodaro, ADHM and Shivaay found some clash padding unlike a Fan or BV or Kites.

As I said earlier if only this much time and energy is rather spent in polishing the product….everyone will be the winner including the patrons.

There is not a single story which cannot work…..its just the way it is told and presented which makes all the difference. Look at all the side tracks Hirani intertwines with the main plot so even a disappointment like PK has something in it for everyone.

Overall, i will take Arjun Rampal’s Daddy over this given srk starred in that movie and acts as good as Rampal, not saying srk is overacting. But, Rahul Dholakia has let him down here.

  22. Nice Trailer. Looks like RGV film when he was good.

I think the central character being muslim and judging by the promo, there are many islam related things happening in the background (mohraam, Eid, etc…), I don’t think it will do good.

SRK script sense is average to bad so I hope he stayed out of that department during this movie.

    • Don’t think it has anything to do with religion here. If the film is good enough it will do well, otherwise it won’t. yes all the symbolism is here but it’s also in keeping with certain masala traditions (admittedly there is an overabundance here, in masala films there were usually other important identities as well, but that’s a different sort of debate.. in other words there is something to be said for the ghettoized representations of minorities..though this kind of representation is very much in keeping with the times..). The trailer is very good. My doubt is a different one though. Obviously it’s hard to say whether the film itself is as good as the trailer. But more than this SRK doesn’t quite have the authenticity for this sort of part the way Salman (or Akshay.. to take two examples) do. He always seems to be ‘posing’ a bit. Now Aamir in Ghajini went down the ‘narrative’ route. The script was important there. Raees though looks like Salman terrain or the kind of thing a true blue masala star does. Many of Salman’s films have been very poor on this score but he had the credibility to maximize his initials in this genre. SRK will need the HNY opening or some such thing to have a 200 crore shot. And he’s never achieved this in a masala effort. Farah Khan always had lots of other stuff to incorporate the multiplex crowd (the OSO deal, the crime caper). In CE Shetty too made mostly a romantic comedy with a masala admixture. This however looks to be the real deal. Of course with a truly good film SRK can overcome some of these issues. But that’s always a high bar in Bollywood. ‘Good enough’ in this genre is enough for Salman to race to the highest benchmarks (or almost) but might not be so for SRK. If I were betting I’d say it doesn’t cross 150. But the initial could be strong enough and the followup passable enough for it to do more. Alternatively the film could be good enough. But I do agree with others here who’ve suggested that a better release date (without competition) might have really helped the numbers irrespective of anything else.

Of course on Kaabil I’m expecting a total failure. To be honest my sense was that both films combined probably wouldn’t do more than 200. But this is a good trailer. One has to account for this.

      Like

      • “If I were betting I’d say it doesn’t cross 150”

Unless it’s OSO/Saawariya type of deal, Raees can get to 150, otherwise I think it will wrap up just around 100 to 120.

With the muslim angle, I think it will impact collection (not to mention the Pakistani actress being there which will creep up in peoples mind soon again). This is not Desai type of deal where in his movies (AAA, Coolie), the muslim character or background shown is so natural/normal and doesn’t seem forced. Like a normal daily muslim life in India.

Of course, the mind set of all Indians have changed a lot too from the Desai days.

If Kaabil is made with just thrilling moments in mind, I think it will catch on well with multiplex audience.

Mahira is awful and if playing an Indian then the reasons for this casting seems a big WTF ! … esp going by media reports he got Sonam removed from the cast.

Whatever dates we are taking, they (#Raees) are following us. I would have never done the same: Rakesh Roshan

Rakesh Roshan slams makers of Raees

Last week, Rakesh Roshan announced that his upcoming production ‘Kaabil’ will release in theatres a day before it was previously scheduled. In a statement to the media, Roshan said his film will hit theatres at 6PM on 25th January.

About a week after the announcement and a day prior to the release of the ‘Raees’ theatrical trailer, reports emerged that Shah Rukh Khan had also decided to release his film on 25th January.

Reacting to this, Rakesh Roshan has slammed the makers of Raees saying “Whatever dates we are taking, they are following us. I would have never done the same”

Here’s what the senior Roshan had to say to DNA:

I didn’t know about their date. My distributors said we should come out on January 25 from the evening shows. I didn’t know the Raees team also planned to change their date.

Whatever dates we are taking, they are following us. I would have never done the same. I belong to an old school of filmmaking and I have given 50 years of my life to the industry. I would never release my film on a day when another filmmaker has already announced their film. I decided to remove Krrish 4 also from Christmas 2018 because I saw SRK’s film is coming that day. I could have easily released my film with Befikre or even with Dangal if I had to clash. But when I announced the film in February, I saw a clean window in January and hence I picked the date. I can’t get into this new groove of things because I don’t understand it.”

It’s a full fledged release on November 25 and not just paid previews. Now that the other film is following my release date, it’s up to my distributors to take a call – whether to release from 6 pm or right from the morning shows.

After a ugly box office clash between Ajay Devgn and Karan Johar during Diwali this year, we could be in for yet another dirty clash. However, while Ajay and Karan were never the best of friends, the relationship that the Roshans share with SRK goes back to the early 90s. In fact, Hrithik is very close to the main men at Excel Entertainment too.

It’s a clash that should not have happened, but with both sides unwilling to move, two similar films are heading towards a major clash at the box office.

  25. The only thing working here for both movies is the unwarranted publicity as both are thanda actors in the trade at the moment.

This brings us to the all important question of Mr. Hrithik Roshan. Going by how Kangana Ranaut made a royal fool out of him he is either too classy or a plain sissy or is there more which meets the eye in this episode which we are not aware. After Rustom taking his Mohenjodaro date and Kangana all over him, he is clearly getting ‘violated’ again. What seemed like a perfectly legitimate release date has now become controversial. Is he ‘that’ mild & gentleman in life ?

Look at the language Kangana used here and a big lol to this lingo –

Mail from Kangana’s ID to Hrithik on Nov. 19, 2014: “tu abhi bhi mera mails check kar raha hai. Dumbo meri hariyanvi tutor roz aati hai aur mein roz ek se ek galiyan seekh rahi hoon. Toh tu pange mat le nahin toh sari umar ke liye scar ho jayega. Koi therapy nahin chalegi, deewaron pe sir patakta milega.
“aur vaise bhi bevkoof jab mujhe pata hai tune mera account hack kiya hai toh main koi personal confidential communication mail ke through kyun karungi? dumb a** kya dimag mein bhusa hai kya tare? kyun time waste kar raha hai? apni aukat ki koi ladki dekh aur wahan dimag laga. zayada unche sapne mat dekh.
“mere ghar ke bahar line hai, acheche khason ko appointment nahin milti, tujhe ek charity project samjha tha, lekin jise khadde se nikalo wahi tumhe khadde mein dhakel de wah!! kya baat hai!! kyun aur baezzat hona chahta hai. chup chap bhool ja sab aur dafa ho, stop checking my mails, nahin toh maine kaha na sari umar keliye scar ho jayega [sic].”

Love the way he says – Raees haazir hai. A Muslim gangster as the hero, played by a superstar, wearing his religion on his sleeve is a rare occurance in Bollywood. Hence, the film feels instantly fresh.
I am reassured about Dholakia too. He probably understands Gujarat well after Parzania, so I see a well-researched, earthy film here.

The Americans fondly call them “Commie Bastards”. I have always called them “Commie Pigs”. Why? Thanks to Shilpa Shetty for promoting love for animals among kids through Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. That’s the story in which pigs take over a “country” and thoroughly destroy it. It’s the usual Commie nonsense of how all people are equal but the moment they grab power it changes to “All men are equal but some are more equal than others”.

Venezuela crumbled under Hugo Chavez. Russia (USSR) and China too had crumbled under Commies but now remain Commies only nominally. The worst Commie scum in the world are now left mostly in India. The CPM, CPI and their gang is a known group of violent, murderous thugs. So I need not narrate their story again. It is important for public at large to know that those parading as “democratic” parties are no less dictatorial commies than the ones Stalin or Mao presided over.

  29. Okay, looks like the general consensus is that trailer is very good. Out of all production house, I expected the least from Excel to produce a 70’s throwback masala flick and that too with a director like Rahul Dholakia. I think that could be the surprise or break of the movie as it is not a familiar space for either Farhan’s production house or Rahul Dholakia. But that can also spring a surprise with its freshness!

As already said above. Rarely a superstar does title role(not Salman) and this one needed a solo release on a big festival. It would have been nothing less than 200 crores even with mixed WOM and if +ve WOM, would have crossed 250 easily.

To put it simply, Kaabil should be worried. They should have moved away when they were requested. Now its a head-on!

    • 100 cr is very difficult for a movie like Kaabil which has no buzz. Compared to that 150 cr for raaes is easier. Don’t go by the logic that 100 is lesser than 150. It’s the buzz that decides what is easy to achieve. There has been a song release for Kaabil today. No one has even bothered to post it. That’s the level of interest in the movie. I will be highly surprised if Kaabil reaches even 10 cr on its first day. Now WOM is a different thing and Kaabil might be miles better than raaes but on face value it is as uninteresting as mohenjo daro was. I can smell the same disaster here.
Even though dholakia comes from a different sensibility I doubt this will be an earthy movie as sandyi is saying. This looks like a full blown masala movie to me.

      • Krish in my opinion, Kaabil will get the required hype due to clash talks even if it was not there earlier. Plus ‘underdog ka zamana hai….’ Going by Ranbir’s and Anushka standings, ADHM coming alone would have been a lifetime Talaash / DZ kind of no hype 65-70cr deal but benefitted the extra 20 cr due to clash talks and all the hungama attached to it.

Its exam season immediately after 26th Jan. For movies to post huge totals which you are referring needs humongous opening and then fair amount of legs to keep posting decent numbers in week 2. Unfortunately the front load here is getting distributed between the two. Opening equity for both actors ‘at the moment’ is in the dumps and audience is vary of the hamminess in their performances lately and patience is running short esp when you have ‘Pataka TV’ and ‘worldwide web’ at your disposal to watch or do something more interesting.

They will both enjoy good amount of chatter and audience build up and TV shows leading up to the release date but it’s the Friday which tells the real story when audience has to dig into his pockets to buy a ticket.

Srk requested them as friends and they could have easily accepted it as Raees can’t be delayed further. Kaabil could have easily shifted at that time (last June). But they went thinking Raees will back down. They tried all silly tricks to ‘fake’ announce Krrish 4 for Christmast 2018 and then week later to back down saying they wont clash as SRK-ALR announced it first. It would be ‘unethical’ to announce the date already announced. So, if 2 movies releasing it is unethical? Lol. Why forgetting the genuine request in person which was widely covered all over. Raees can’t get delayed further being 2 year project. Roshan could have shown graciousness and moved for Kaabil for April end. Now its too late even for them to move. Now, they will just cry all over the media and few folks will catch it up and join them but majority don’t care.

“…When we asked Rakesh Roshan about this, he replied, “I knew that they will shift the date. But some people told me that nothing of that sort will happen. My instinct said that they will shift the date. But, it is ok. 4-5 shows will not make a difference.”

“…. Interestingly, when the celebs are asked to comment on the clash, they say that since the year only has 52 weeks, clashes are bound to happen. Probe Rakesh Roshan on it! And he disagrees to the statement.

“I disagree to your point. A big film and a small film can come together. But, two credible actors coming on the same day is not healthy. You can see the well which is not of water where you can swim. It is the well of fire. And we both are jumping into it. Both will get burnt but to what extent, that we will have to see,” reveals Rakesh Roshan.

He adds further, “I had tried my best (to talk to SRK and Raees makers) but then they thought that it is my weakness. But that is not my weakness. They took it the other way. They thought I am scared and all. But it is not like that. It is just my knowledge of films because I am in this business for 30-40 years and I know what happens when two big films come. For Hrithik, I am not worried at all. Hrithik is not that weak. His contemporaries are Aamir Khan and Salman Khan and they have crossed 300 crores. Sultan has crossed and Dangal will cross, because Aamir has made a good film. But since we are coming with Raees, both the films cannot cross 200 crores. It will affect both the films. Since I have made the film at a very tight budget, so even if my film does 100 crores, then also we will be in profit.

But does this clash affect his personal relationship with Shah Rukh Khan?

“Not at all. I am a good well wisher of everybody – Farhan, Ritesh, SRK. Shah Rukh is like my younger brother and we have made three films together. And I know his family very well. But. somewhere it is not right ethically. But fine! They might have something which I am not able to figure out. Even he will have his reasons. I am being frank and I don’t know politics. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying anything against anybody. I am just talking facts,” concludes Roshan.

The story of Abdul Latif, on whose life SRK’s upcoming movie Raees is based

    http://www.opindia.com/2016/12/the-story-of-abdul-latif-on-whose-life-srks-upcoming-movie-raees-is-based/

Latif became involved in other crimes like extortion, kidnapping and even murders. He developed contacts in Pakistan too. He formed his own gang, and at one point of time in the early 80s, he was indulged in a gang-war against Dawood Ibrahim.

It is reported that Latif’s gang was almost exclusively made up of Muslim members only, which was not the case of other criminal gangs in those times. Perhaps he did it to cultivate a Robinhood type of image among poor Muslims – a community he was born in. And it worked. Latif could win in five municipal wards in local body elections of Ahmedabad in 1986-87. He was in jail at that time.
Although his political career was cut short as he was disqualified from the post, he could show that he commanded popular support among Muslims. As a result, he was increasingly used by politicians, especially those belonging to the Congress party, to win elections and to settle scores with political rivals. His proximity with the Congress party was evident as Hasan Lala, President of Gujarat Youth Congress in those times, was his childhood friend

There, a maulana made both Dawood and Latif swear on the Holy Quran not to fight against each other and work as a team. And that was the beginning of Latif’s entry into the world of terrorism
In the coming years, Latif became synonymous with crime and Islamic terrorism in Gujarat as he joined hands with Dawood, who by then had started planning the Mumbai blasts of 1993.

Now it is to be seen how Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie Raees portrays Abdul Latif. Will he be portrayed as the communal gangster turned terrorist that he was, or will there be some whitewashing of his deeds?

  37. Okay, as I said in other thread. Roshans got the wind of Raees releasing on 25th and announced it on 25th. They kept the release date a surprise to Kaabil’s team but they also changed to 25th.

    My comment: https://satyamshot.wordpress.com/2016/12/06/images-from-raees/#comment-342345

“Raees did announce teaser on Nov 30(still no release date announcement) and trailer on Dec 7. Then out of nowhere Kaabil announces its new date with ‘extended previews’ on 25th in this 1 week Raees gap of teaser & trailer. That sort of co-incidence is too hard to ignore.”

    SRK’s comment today!

Shah Rukh Khan said, “We had discussed this a long time ago with our exhibitors and distributors. We will be opening in the regular shows and Kaabil will open in the evening shows. This is a logical decision because the 26th is a holiday. We had decided that we would reveal the release date only at the launch of the trailer.”

    • So Roshans out mastered Excel etc by coming after 6PM after catching whiff of them releasing fully on 25th. Surely if they knew, their “master” plan would be more elaborate then this???

      • You can believe what you want. I don’t think there is any reason for SRK to open lie mentioning he discussed with distributors and exhibitors long back in such an open live conference. Maybe Roshans also got idea that is better to release on 25th evenings from their distributors. But the timing of their announcement just days before theatrical trailer and print material out is dead giveaway. All the posters are up at cinemas mentioning 25th Jan.

Either ways, both will release on 25th completely.

Their leading men simply don’t have the required pull right now. My prediction would be: Raees- 120cr, Kaabil-80cr. None of them is going to be a hit. I hope I am wrong and that for the sake of the people and for the money involved, both work. But I can’t see that happening. It would surprise me if even one of them turns out to be a genuine hit. Shah Rukh Khan’s deep voiceover as Raees Alam, an 80s bootlegger in Ahmedabad, works to its fullest in the trailer of this semi-biopic.

Reportedly based on the life of don, Abdul Latif (although the producers have denied this), the movie is set to hit screens on January 25, 2017. And the trailer was worth the wait.

Filmfare award-winning cinematographer K.U. Mohanan’s camera shows glimpses of boats doing their dirty business off Gujarat’s coast, a spectacular overhead shot of a roadroller crushing liquor bottles meticulously arranged in a grid (guaranteed to give nightmares to people with OCD), and Nawazuddin Siddiqui sharing screen space with SRK for the very first time. If you thought that would set your film adrenaline rushing, wait till you get to the point where Atul Kulkarni exchanges metaphorical pleasantries with King Khan.

SRK’s bearded style looks menacing, all the more so when he glares through kohl-lined eyes. There are unabashed theatricals (SRK coming out of a smokescreen cooly as a fight ensues in the background) and over-the-top dialogue (“Gujarat ki hawa mein vyapar hai sahib. Meri saans toh rokhoge, lekhin iss hawa ko kaise rokhoge?”) but it has its desired effect.

Raees Alam’s love interest is essayed by Pakistani actor Mahira Khan, whose nationality briefly got the film into trouble not so long ago. And there’s Sunny Leone doing the obligatory item number, which seems to be a remix of Kalyanji-Anandji’s Laila Mein Laila (from Qurbani) and is interspersed between a lot of bling and bang.

Raees is set to clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, a day before Republic Day 2017.

SRK is looking good but his acting seems to be very similar to Don 2 with all the swagger. Nawaz seems to be having a very good role and he could overshadow SRK. Mahira looks plain and seems to be overacting trying to be cute.”- Sputnik

  48. I will agree with Sputnik views but a bit more excited due to Nawaz and I hope they give him ample scope for dialogue baazi. I really like the stability on his face while mouthing his dialogues. This seems like vintage Nawaz of Kahaani ( part 1 ) who made a lot difference with his kinetic performance as IB official from Delhi. Further even though his role was very brief he made a dull movie like Kick a bit bearable with his trade mark “tak”

Meanwhile one thing I surely agree with Anuraag Kashyap is the bit of ‘Bachchanesque’ styling of Nawaz.( Gangs of Wasseypur ) . At points the demeanor / body language of Nawaz reminds of rustic Bachchan of his hey days. I think I will start to rate Nawaz better than Irfan now.

Rest though he remains a big star, I continue to not have any faith in SRK abilities as a thug due to cringy romantic looks sprinkled to the mix ( must be srk’s idea and interference). Even the masala mix needs to have the right pitch to invest in the character.

But biggest usp is inclusion of sexy Sunny Leone to classic Laila mode. That beat on that face will enhance the song two folds though the original zeenat aman was no less.

  51. As per some members here- A Bhakt speaks –

    http://m.rediff.com/movies/report/why-the-raees-trailer-offends-me/20161208.htm

Why the Raees trailer offends me-

It reinforces the Muslim stereotype, says Syed Firdaus Ashraf.

And this is what bothers me about the just released trailer of Shah Rukh Khan’s next film, Raees.

It makes you feel that the star, though his dialogues, is stereotyping the Muslim community.

For example: ‘Baniye ka dimaag, Miyabhai ki daring’ (‘The brains of a merchant and the daring of a Muslim’).

One may argue, in defence of the trailer, that Raees is based on the life of the late Abdul Latif, an Ahmedabad-based gangster and associate of Dawood Ibrahim.

But that is not the point.

The point is: Why stereotype an entire community in the promotional dialogue for a film that stars, and is produced by (along with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment) one of the nation’s biggest superstars?

By doing this, the scriptwriters — Rahul Dholakia (who also directs Raees), Harit Mehta, Neeraj Shukla and Ashish Vashi — are only re-confirming the belief of those who are convinced that ‘Miyabhais are a violent people’ and influencing those who are considering the possibility that ‘Miyabhais are a violent people.’

Also, if Raees calls himself ‘Miyabhai’ in the trailer, why is he in the business of alcohol which is forbidden in Islam?

Mahira Khan’s presence in the trailer is not impressive; from the first look, it seems like any television actress could have been cast in her role.

The only impressive actor in the trailer is Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who makes the best use of his ‘punchy’ dialogues.

If a movie is about somebody in that era with the mindset that person had, it should be shown that way. It doesn’t have to be a real person, it’s just a story.

So if the movie is about hitler, he should be showen hugging jews?

In the whole trailer there is one word “Miya” and in context of daring. Daring makes a person violent?

I remember a back 35 years ago a person got run over by the train and got cut up and nobody would go get the body, this one person did and people said “He has a lot of daring”. It doesn’t mean this person is violent, it means he has a lot of guts/balls…

According to the community, it’s a sign of disrespect.

Now of course there was stereotyping in Desai’s films but it was always done affectionately. To repeat my old point the guys you want to hang out with in AAA are the two fun minorities not the dour Amar! Of course this too is another old stereotype about the majority being serious and hard-working and the minorities just partying all the time and being irresponsible. But still in the world of that film it’s not hard to discern where Desai’s sympathies lay. And he of course did it in film after film. Suhaag, the film he made right after AAA (and possibly my favorite film of his), just has majority characters and it’s also his darkest film!

Take Suhaag for example, each song is amazing in it’s own right.

Desai is gujju growing up in Boriwalli truly was affectionate to all and of course he was a Gandhinian/Congress. You see hint of it in his movies such as Mere Tute huve song in Challia, on a wall in background states “Vote Congress”. I believe Chal Chal mere bhai also had something like that.

His wasn’t case where Muslims actor is in the movie or a muslim character is in the movie for some fake reason. Or in his movie a muslim didn’t have to justify or prove his love for the country like it is the case in todays movies. If there is a muslims character, generally he is given some dialogues to show how much he loves india.

Everyone’s doing it without exception and it’s disastrous. I do agree that the media is much softer about these things when Muslim or other minority groups do it and hence loses its credibility elsewhere (not that the majority is always arguing in good faith either!). If one is for a principle one must assert it without exception. But then who does that? We become blind to the very sins (or even greater ones) when parties we like are in power that we are otherwise always magnifying when it’s the other side!

Too much of Information available now. Just seeing trailers/posters/makings/cast etc and there are million reasons to protest. Before the internet, it was not united and movies used to release and then protest will start up not before release.

Most funniest protests include of Billu Barber. All these so called Barbers protested and came to SRK’s house and said using ‘Barber’ is like a gaali to them and they don’t like it. They prefer to be named as ‘hairdresser’. If you make this movie the ‘barber’ name will stuck on our profession so please change it to Billu Hairdresser. SRK accepted their protest and week before the release changed the name of the movie to just ‘Billu’ and reprinted all posters and striked out ‘Barber’ name and even edited the references of Barber(including title song) with lot of expense. This was just heights!!

Other ridiculous examples include .. some descendants of Jodha Bai protesting against ‘Jodha Akbar’ and then some of them against Bajirao Mastani saying Kashibai would never dance with dancers and she had a polio! 🙂

Very clearly this is no comparison between Raees and huge hits like Sultan/PK. I’m just bringing to everyone’s notice how difficult it is do over 160 crs (max) in 2 weeks flat with a clash.

Raees has just 2 weeks (15 days) before another film – Jolly LLB 2(sureshot hit film) will release and stop the movie in its tracks. The WOM can’t be surely like PK and it’ll be great if it has similar to Sultan but then even Sultan would have suffered if released in Jan 26 and a clash. There is not much chance for it to do 200 crores, if you think it can do.. can you sum up the numbers in the blanks below? The WOM will be between these 2 movies at best with half the screens(or maybe 60% max).

That basically means.. you should stop commenting on these songs, Lol. Obviously there will be ‘purists’ who will never like any remixes, remakes of yesteryears hits. The day when they start making songs which folks like you will start liking, they will be alienating the real target audience the song is made for. So, calling every remix song a bad is actually not helping the case.

Personally, I think this fits well in the movie and doesn’t look like a copy-paste job like other remixes. Ram Sampath’s care in taking different singer(Pawni Pandey) and effort shows well. The beat was always slow in the original and it sticks majorly to it. They didn’t make it too fast to appeal youth. It more or looks the same.

        • It’s not a question of being a purist but being sane. And every kind of garbage cannot be defended using such arguments. I’ve argued for years that Bollywood is essentially a bankrupt industry and this bankruptcy is evident on most days in every sense. In any case one cannot defend every age. Some are just worse than others. To argue against this is to argue against any common sense notion of history. whether in the arts or entertainment comparable stuff is not produced in every age. As for covers there can be good versions and I’ve heard many in the West. Let’s say Bollywood is not able to do this 99% of the time. But then I find contemporary Bollywood music to be junk on most days also (though sometimes I might enjoy the junk!). It’s a question of standards. has nothing to do with being a purist (the word is foreign to my vocabulary anyway). Of course those standards cannot come about in the first place if one has no sense of history (even assuming one has some exposure to it).

          Like

        • The point is very simple. The standards has to be based on the current era and average songs. Thats why it is called ‘standard’. You can’t bring undue expectations that every remix song will create something exceptional which will be eclipse the original and that is never going to happen. Even if you recreate the same song without remixing, some folks will not like it. Since you end up disliking all the remix songs, it has nothing to do with standard but just a personal taste.

My point of debate is not about Raees song but in general when you are mentioning you don’t like any of the songs at all. But that does not mean I actually the remixes(certainly not) but at least my ‘standards’s are not wildly high for no reason and actually on par for the Bollywood standard these days.

          Like

        • “The standards has to be based on the current era and average songs. Thats why it is called ‘standard’. ‘

This is precisely the idea that must be completely rejected. Any standard to be worthy of the name must be so in a historic sense. If it is completely relative to the age then there is actually no standard. If I say Lagaan is a very good film or that DDLJ is a classic this means that these films are so irrespective of anything else. If I on the other hand say Lagaan is a good film only for its age then I am not using any standard at all. We don’t say Kohli is a fine batsman as long as he’s not compared to anyone before 2010! If Messi is one of the greatest that automatically means he can be compared with the greatest of any age. Again, any notion of a ‘standard’ always implies something beyond the ‘present’ of an age.

Now what one has to understand is that some ages are just overall worse than others. In the 80s Bollywood was largely producing poor films. If I made a top 20 for that decade I’d take it over a top 20 for the 90s quite easily but the average standard of an 80s film was very poor. Even the films Bachchan did during that age, and even though he might have been very successful doing them, were overall way inferior to the films he was doing in the 70s. the same for a comparison of those two decades. One can’t say the standards in the 70s were those great films ranging from masala to middle cinema but that in the 80s the B grade Mithun films (even his A grade stuff was really like B grade), which I sometimes enjoy, were the new standard. Yes standards change and some are inferior to others. All of this ought to be fairly elementary.

Now getting to the music first off you missed the part where I said I like a number of Western cover versions. Secondly I don’t just reject contemporary Bollywood remixes but most of contemporary Bollywood music in general. This is not because I always expect Lata and Kishore and Rafi to sing every song. if that were the case I wouldn’t love Rahman so much. Incidentally even on Bollywood history I don’t believe that everything is worthwhile. For me the 50s is a valuable decade. the 60s is time-pass barring exceptions. the 70s is a very strong decade. If one is just looking at the music though the 60s is right up there. In any case being opposed to remixes the way Bollywood does them is actually the most respectable opinion one can come up with!

It’s not enough to say one is keeping up with present day standards. Some Mithun films from the 80s are better than others. But even the better ones are not ‘good’ in any reasonable sense. Just as today most of Salman’s films are junk. Bajrangi is the exception but when it comes about we can instantly see the difference between it and other films. Now most people might still enjoy the junk. So what? I’m never very worried about what majorities think. Majorities support horrible films sometimes and elect monsters. That suggests an absence of standards not that their standard is somehow suddenly acceptable. Getting back to those Raees or Kaabil songs it wouldn’t take much to make these half acceptable.

Finally there’s a certain kind of defensive stance where one exaggerates the other person’s opinion to justify the unjustifiable. What would be a couple of examples?

          1) The DZ gross is underwhelming. response? Hey were you expecting 150?!

2)The remixes are mostly bad these days. response? Are you expecting Lata? Are you opposed to all remixes?

In either case one doesn’t actually address the problem. One just tries to change the subject.

But on the other hand, many people will cheerfully accept them playing Shivaji or Ashoka, even though they may have been guilty of some of the exact things they accuse the Islamic rulers for.

In this scenario, I commend SRK for taking up this role, if it is indeed only a fictional depiction. If one can have a Hindi Don in films, why not a Muslim Don? In fact, we already saw one in Maqbool, played brilliantly by Pankaj Kapoor.

          Like

        • yes but a Muslim don doesn’t offend anyone. It’s part of the same ghettoized representation. RGV himself did a lot of this earlier on. What’s more interesting in Raees is the degree to which this minority representation is twinned with the whole Gujarati business stereotype. He’s almost saying Guru-like stuff in a couple of the scenes.

          Like

        • put differently Desai would never have made a film like Raees. This is why one shouldn’t just celebrate masala in the abstract. Or one shouldn’t think this is what the genre was about. You can of course identify various elements that went into a quintessential masala film (though Desai wasn’t necessarily quintessential.. he was far more devoted to the Nehruvian paradigm than the average masala maker) but one also has to get the politics behind these films. A classic example is Coolie. Here you have again all the usual stereotypes but the Muslim character is nonetheless a ‘coolie’. Or universal in that sense. Bachchan in any case had a unique genealogy when it came to minority representations including in the foundational Deewar (to repeat an older point the Hindu who has a quarrel with his god and refuses to enter the temple but who then accepts the talismanic qualities of the ‘786’.. this is of course explained to him.. but what’s truly remarkable is that the 786 keeps saving his life and he dies only when he loses it.. in the meantime he makes his only appearance at the temple for an argument with his god..) but the point is that to make him a Muslim no one thought it necessary to make him a gangster (there were iconic Muslim gangsters in those days as well). Similarly in AAA the minorities are the heart and soul of the film. yes they’re stereotypes (also in another way.. the majority as the serious hard-working guy while the minorities are irresponsible who want to party all the time) but the film is unimaginable without them. All stereotyping is not the same. When you get to the 90s the Muslim is either a gangster or a terrorist. Eventually you got some very normal representations but nonetheless whenever there were iconic ones they immediately disappeared into the same sort of ghettoized space.

        • Well there’s the famous legend about Asoka turning Buddhist after being horrified by the level of massacre he caused in a battle he won. Not sure if it was Kalinga or a different one. But again the more important point is one must think historically. So yes plenty of kings and emperors in those days massacred all kinds of people. To put it in modern gangster parlance ‘it wasn’t personal’. Lots of communities, ethic or religious or otherwise got slaughtered all over the world. It’s not ok but not historically atypical. It’s as if blacks were to get up in the US today and start slaughtering whites because they were kept as slaves for centuries. When you take the values of the present into the past you are first off all being totally anachronistic but beyond this it’s a move which is always deeply dangerous and unleashes enormous violence. If all the people in the world started addressing all the injustices of history this way we would just have genocides at every turn. we already have too many precisely because people think this way.

I didn’t see any issue there. The issue is only mentioned when a muslim plays that role in the movie. SRK is playing a role very similar to Sultan Mirza and smuggler of illegal liquor instead of gold.

The sort of sentiment that the Guru character has when he only wants to do business. Also I did not say there was an ‘issue’ with it. But this is precisely what I found interesting. In other words on the one hand the ghettoized Muslim representation but on the other hand the much celebrated Gujarati business ethic stereotype (this too has long been made fun of elsewhere but in contemporary India has acquired a certain ‘positive’ vibe for the first time which is to say beyond Gujarat). Put differently on the question of identity the Muslim representation might be considered problematic but it is coupled with this business ethic. Elsewhere Muslim gangsters are just happy to shoot people every other minute (the RGV fantasy).

        • I am often in this odd position of defending Rocky. Odd because I and Rocky couldn’t be further apart politically. But (and this has nothing to do with friendship or anything because I don’t defend things I don’t believe in) a lot of the stuff is not personally intended. I know it often sounds offensive and so on but the problem is that a lot of this narrative is now the ‘common sense’ of the Right. It’s not really some minority opinion. This is what many people increasingly say on a variety of subjects. And a lot of people who hold these views aren’t scary types or ideologues in that violent sense. They just subscribe to things the gravity of which they are not completely aware of. I am not being an apologist here because I have argued with Rocky a million times on all these subjects. But he’s a passionate sort who certainly isn’t being vicious though I again understand why it would seem this way to many. I think he should be more restrained about this and I’ve said so a number of times. But I’ve also seen the truly vicious types here and elsewhere.

And again I’m not just saying this because it’s Rocky. The problem is that there’s a lot that I find politically unacceptable but at the same time I cannot argue that every person who supports such politics (which is always a spectrum) is personally reprehensible in some easy way. For instance I run into all kinds of Trump supporters, some are even related to me (true!), some I know in other contexts. I find Trump disgusting but I can’t say that every one of those supporters is disgusting. Because not everyone does it for the very same reasons.

I will end with a movie analogy here. For me Rocky (and I am psychoanalyzing a bit!) is a bit like the Kamal character in Hey Ram who hasn’t yet needed the SRK character’s help (hope he never needs it of course!). There is still hope for him! However there are very many who would never have that transformation even if they were in that position. Or from the other side I think (or I’d like to think) that Rocky would be helping his SRK-like minority friend in that situation. But I couldn’t say this with confidence about everybody who has the same views. Now maybe I’m wrong and Rocky could correct me. But I always trust the Desai fan to one degree or another. Ha! In any case the reason I am getting into all of this is that people have these things should be examined a bit more deeply sometimes. Neutrality is a dream anyway. But what’s more important is that people have civil discussions about these things. notice how often I and Rocky argue but there’s never a problem otherwise. Again he should be more restrained. And he should also be willing to understand why others might find his statements very objectionable and not always accuse them of bad faith. In any case I never suggested this was a neutral blog. I don’t believe in such foolish things. The rest is a judgment call. But I never said the blog was a democracy either!

In fact I’m beginning to admire SRKs tenacity to not opt out just because he can’t keep up with Amir or Salman.

    • The thing about making fun of Bollywood and then jumping at the first chance to act in a Bollywood film just makes one totally hypocritical (though it’s not very different from Indian actors claiming to not care about Hollywood and then doing the very same). I haven’t of course seen the video (nor am I interested) but this bit is in truly bad taste:

[The anchor then goes on to tell what he thinks is a funny story about a Pakistani filmmaker who got so inspired by Bollywood that when his father died he cremated rather than buried the dead man.]

In general given the state of India-Pakistan politics at just about any point this kind of video confirms certain kinds of prejudices. As for SRK I really have no sympathy for him. I won’t repeat everything I’ve said on this subject for very long but he plays these cynical games with subjects that are already sensitive or fraught with tension. Casting Mahira Khan might just be about the overseas audiences but some of the other stuff he says (and equally does not say) sends out certain signals that are unfortunate to say the least. I am always against ‘extremes’ one way or the other nor do I think that one justifies another. But for this very reason one cannot be vague on certain subjects or deliberately communicate certain kinds of vibes. I reject the CDI kind of framing for this reason but I also reject what is the other side of this coin — a certain ‘shiftiness’ or ambiguity on certain issues.

Also, the background score was appealing the trailer, but the song itself is just about average. I enjoyed Zaalima quite a bit.

Also, this number – its tune, lyrics everything sticks out like a sore thumb. The other song uses more Urdu words – which seemed relevant to the film’s ethos , while this song one goes the other end with words like kathinayee and virajmaan. I don’t get it.

  90. With 3 Muslim Characters, Shah Rukh Khan’s Big, Brave Message

    http://www.ndtv.com/opinion/with-3-muslim-characters-a-rebellion-by-shah-rukh-khan-1648365?pfrom=home-lateststories

In the last four months, one of India’s biggest superstars, Shah Rukh Khan, has acted in three back-to-back films, each time playing a Muslim character. There is his powerful cameo in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, where he is Tahir Khan to Aishwarya Rai’s Saba; he is also Jehangir Khan in Dear Zindagi; now, he is the much-awaited title character in Raees. The film’s trailer has Shah Rukh Khan speaking the by-now popular dialogue “Baniye ka dimaagh and miyaan bhai ki daring” (the acumen of a Baniya, the courage of a Muslim) asserts the Muslim identity he has in the lead role.

Shah Rukh has never quite underplayed his religious identity in real life either. From clearing misconceptions about Islam in a post-9/11 column, to talking about his faith on various occasions, he has also been at the receiving end of political ire for his sentiments. It was his strong conviction about the injustice of religion-based discrimination that had Karan Johar cast him as Rizwan Khan in My Name is Khan where he is a man who wants to clear the tag of terrorism associated with his faith. In the 2007 hit film Chak De India, he was Kabir Khan, a disgraced hockey captain who faces religious discrimination and the ignominy of having to prove his patriotism despite his endeavor to win laurels for his country. In the film, the me`dia portrays Kabir Khan as a captain who compromises a match in favor of Pakistan, and his neighbours then dub him a traitor.

Uncannily, in real life, Shah Rukh Khan was questioned by the right-wing in India over his patriotism when, in an interview in 2014, he said he was pained by the intolerance in the country. Posters of the star were burnt and five-time MP Yogi Adityanath asked him to move to Pakistan. Life imitated art, or, in Shah Rukh’s case, he wanted art to imitate life to clear the misconceptions about minorities and to bring us face-to-face with discrimination in the country. Appearing on NDTV with Barkha Dutt in March 2010, debating the concept of moderate Muslims with Muslim scholars and filmmakers Alyque Padamsee and Bollywood’s Soha Ali Khan and Kabir Khan, Shah Rukh spoke of the need to break stereotypes and clichés in Hindi films, something which he claimed to do with My Name Is Khan.

In a country where it is rare to find a Muslim or a Christian character as the lead in films, with minorities usually reduced to caricatures and stereotypes, the fact that the biggest star plays a Muslim in three simultaneous films is a strong message to a country, a rebellion that needs to be noticed and lauded.

In two of his three films, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, where he has a significant cameo, and Dear Zindagi, where he plays a psychologist/life coach to Alia Bhatt’s Kaira, nothing in the characters played by him betray elements of Islam. And that perhaps is the beauty of this new-wave reiteration of identity. That the Muslim character is normal, he’s just another high-profile artist or a shrink based in Goa who could have well been a Raj Malhotra or a Rohan Fernandes. At a time when Vidya Balan reportedly walked out of a film based on writer Kamala Das (who converted to Islam), allegedly due to right-wing pressure, this assertion of identity is brave.

In the 80s, the Hindi film industry produced films that had a Muslim character central to the film. Remember Naseem and Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, both directed by Saeed Mirza? But these films were meant for alleged alternate-cinema consumers. They were slotted for the critics’ award category. Popular culture and films bore few exceptions to the norm.

Shah Rukh Khan, the quintessential Bollywood romantic hero, has in the last few months tried to state that it is as cool to be Tahir as it is to be a Rahul or Raj and Muslim characters don’t have to be accessorized with skull caps. It is important to reiterate the new normal when, in every second blockbuster film, and I do not just mean the neo-jingoistic films of the 90s but our nationalistic films in recent times, those complicit in every terror act, belong to the Muslim community or connote to it.

When those who can and are in power refuse to engage, allowing ignorants hold centre-stage in dialogues on sexism, religion, culture and social norms, when those in power are forcing the narrative to fall in the realm of stereotypes, this reassertion is a timely reminder of the normal.

Shah Rukh Khan and his league must be thanked for this new normal. And very brave.

In Dear zindagi i haven’t seen him propagating anything about religion or whatever. He played simply a character as per requirement of the script which was not written by him either. Raees is yet to release and lets wait for it.

  91. Actually having read that Article. I am impressed by SRK’s release of Raees with the tagline of Baniye ka Dimaag and Mia bhai ka daring, the whole idea is to convey the normal aspects of everyday life character (religion doesnt matter). However its difficult at times to be at this level and speakup your mind and you can be at the losing end of it altogether.

  94. I haven’t commented on the trailer: But maybe, being late is ok.

The official trailer is a weird one; in the sense, I just DIDN’T expect such a film from the maker of PARZANIA, that too based on the life of Abdul Latif. There is wayyyyy too much commerce in the film. Now because of this, the onus lies on DHOLALKIA hoping he would successfully straddle that line between his indie-mind and a mind-boggling commercial cinema. Goddammit, this is almost like an Amitabh movie from the ’70s with Amitabh at his peak.

I am confused by this trailer. I saw a Dholakia interview where he said the idea and execution for this film started with some Gujju NRIS in the US who came up with this idea of starting a film with prohibition as the back-ground; a small, low-budget indie film. As per Dholakia, this then ‘organically’ grew into a larger-than-life film with SRK and Farhan coming in.

The above, might be, the WINNING point or the losing point of the film. Only time will tell. But the fact that this was never considered a star-driven, big-budgeted masala film but turned out to the that might be a cause of concern; in the sense that you neither get a laddoo or a theeki gol-gappa.

Again, this might be a huge winner, but there are concerns here – not with SRK’s act or his inputs, but with how the project has ‘evolved.’ This is almost like Bachchan’s AGNEEPATH started on a limited scale but turned out to be bigger. It cannot work that way. AGNEEPATH could JUST not have worked with a small-scale approach.

    Very confusing signals…

    Like

    • Ace commentry. Agree to your views.

BTW, Agneepath did not work at Box Office. It was made with passion and ected with panache and bigger passion.

With Raees, Box Office is the only expectation.

      Like

      • So, Raees should not work at boxoffice because Agneepath hansn’t? I agree Agneepath was a classic but does that mean any film with B.O success can’t be so? Or three is a rule that a movie must be a flop to get a classic tag? I don’t think masala genera is the only criteria for B.O success. In case Seers falls in that bracket then one can see another big performer on its way as the genre has been overdone in bollywood and has lost its flavour now.

1 dies as crowd goes berserk after SRK arrives at Vadodara station

VADODARA: One person was killed and two policemen were injured as crowd went berserk after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan arrived at the railway station by August Kranti Rajdhani Express for promotion of his upcoming film ‘Raees’.
Officials at the railway police control room here said, “At around 10.30 pm, the train arrived at platform number six of the station and halted for 10 minutes.”

“Shah Rukh’s fans had gathered in large number to have a glimpse of the actor who had boarded the train from Mumbai and is going to Delhi as part of the promotional campaign for his film,” railway police said.

“The crowd went berserk when the train halted and began banging its window panes and even falling on top of each other. Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to control the crowd.

“When the train started moving, people started running along with it. Due to the rush, one person died of breathlessness and two policemen posted there to control the crowd were injured,” they said.

This all for the sake of promoting a delayed movie is unjustified. Can’t imagine any other star even thinking to go this low to show his fan following. I find this a desperate and disgusting effort from SRK.
