Shahrukh Khan And Hrithik Roshan Clash This Week
    Tuesday 24 January 2016 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

This week will see Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan battle it out at the box office. Its an early release on Wednesday for both films with the big holiday falling on Thursday. There is just one holiday and not a holiday period where a clash maybe can be justified but this is how its played out and two big films will release on the same day. It is in real a Shahrukh Khan V Hrithik Roshan clash as the films do not have much of a supporting cast and the music of both films is not that big that it adds on the initial. Even the directors of both films do not have much of a track record. Rahul Dholakia of Raaes is untried at this level while Sanjay Gupta has many films (the last being Jazbaa) but limited success.

Hrithik Roshan clashed with Akshay Kumar a few weeks back with Mohenjo Daro against Rustom and came off second best and here the gap in the initial will be more as there is a huge miscalculation from the makers of Kaabil. The hero and the heroine are blind in Kaabil and the promos show this clearly so even if the film was solo it would have struggled to open. In fact till date no film with a blind male lead has ever grossed big at the box office. Its surprising that a big banner like Filmkraft have made such an error as Kaabil is more of a content film and needs space and time. The film has fetched high prices from distributors and that is probably why the film stuck to the date because a change would have led to distributors renegotiating deals to a lower price even though a date change would have benefited all. The film has huge table profits before release. Another problem is that its a content film but the director tends to make films inspired from the West or Far East and generally void of emotions so he will have to surpass the previous works in a big way for Kaabil to have the content to get big numbers.

Raees has Shahrukh Khan and a solid theatrical trailer which gives an impression of a mass film so the initial is going to come. There is a clash with Kaabil but initially it will no surprise if it is just a one horse race. The only problem with Raees is that it has turn out the sort of film that the theatrical shows it is. The director of the film has made a few films but very art like films (Parzania, Lamhaa) while the banner Excel Entertainment also make films with a different cinematic language and narrative be it Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, Baar Baar Dekho and the Rock On films among others. If the film is like the theatrical shows and a full out Hindi mass film with action, dialogues and Shahrukh Khan then it will be hard to stop. But if the treatment is like what the banner and director have given to their previous films then the public is no fool and will find out very fast and then its just about where the initial star power of Shahrukh Khan can take it.

The makers of both films are fighting for shows so the advance has not started at many places. In fact for Kabil it has hardly started anywhere while Raees advance started at some places over the weekend and has raced ahead. Its hard to judge pre sales due to the limited screens open for advance but most should open today and there will be a clearer idea of sales by the end of the day.

  2. It’s a box office clash that has been widely spoken about – but there are high chances that Kaabil and Raees, releasing tomorrow, will do exceedingly well as they are both eminently watchable films.

This time, the level of engaging-ness in both the films is high. Both are love stories. Intense love stories.

In Kaabil, Hrithik Roshan loves his wife to death, whose death you will know soon enough, and he is ready to go to any lengths to avenge the wrong done to her. The last 20 minutes of Kaabil are so heart-in-the-mouth, you would be advised to hold your bursting bladders until the last drop of blood is shed and avenged on screen.

Kaabil is by far Sanjay Gupta’s best work, more emotional and dramatic than any of the violent sagas he has narrated in the past. Hrithik gives his finest, most searing and passionate performance since Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai and Guzaarish. His intensity of emotional expression is disturbing, haunting.

Battle of the blockbusters: ‘Kaabil’ versus ‘Raees’
Battle of the blockbusters: ‘Kaabil’ versus ‘Raees’
Raees is also a love story. And it’s got nothing to do with Mahira Khan. Shah Rukh Khan’s character of a man of ill-gotten power and wealth from Gujarat in the 1980s, is in love – with himself! Since I believe Shah Rukh in real life truly loves himself, the merger of the actor and the character is so brutally complete, it’s like watching mirror images of two identical souls — one off camera, the other on it — dressed in very different clothes.

Raees is also about how two heterosexual men can be bonded spiritually even while being on separate sides of the firing line. This is perhaps the first time in his entire career as a leading man that Shah Rukh has found a co-star who is compelling in his own right.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, when pitched against Shah Rukh. truly defines what ‘The Clash Of The Titans’ means. He does with Shah Rukh what a Rishi Kapoor or Vinod Khanna could never do with Amitabh Bachchan.

The two actors keep us ruthlessly riveted to the screen. The movement of the plot is almost maniacal, to match the manic energy and mutinous passion of the two men at each other’s throats.

More than anything else, the two films this week prove what Hindi cinema has known all along. Nothing can replace the cult of superstardom. The mysticism, magic and magnetism that Khan and Roshan bring to the screen, have to be seen to be believed.

Don’t pick one between “Raees” and “Kaabil“. Go see both.

SRK is stuck at the distant 3rd position for a while. At worst, Raees should cross the biggest Akshay movie and at best it wouldn’t sniff Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Hrithik needs a solid one here after MD debacle. He does not need to outgroas Raees but this can’t be another dud.

  7. On an aside, can’t help but smile after reading HR, RR & Sanjay Gupta thanking KRK for his tweets. I mean c’mon are these your standards to pull ahead in life…… Now I hope after Sultan and Dangal, KRK once again gets an egg on his face and loses further credibility. For whatever his predictions are worth he has been getting out of sync by the day. ADHM and Shivaay were all wrong so was Sultan and Dangal pegged at 150-175cr and 200-250cr respectively which was far from the actual outcome.

Someone here called him a douchebag few days ago but given all the attention by filmy folks his actions these days are more in line of a pimp. All this thanks to his engagement and encouragement by none than Karan Johar during ADHM-Shivaay controversy where kjo got scared by the backlash of BV which incidentally turned out more entertaining than the movie itself….

I have no idea about krk’s wealth but doubt money is at ‘play’ here and all this seem more like a case of massaging his ego to act as a +ve PR. Though on Kjo love there is something deeper and keeping in mind the sexual tendencies it wouldn’t be surprising if kjo offered to fulfill krk’s ‘nawabi shauk’ What is funny is Kjo seems to have got a two part deal which has Ranbir as part of the package. After all the fun on him there is not much Ranbir has done on screen for his sudden change of heart…..it all seems puzzling to say the least.

I am glad the piece contains a much needed disclaimer –
” There is no doubt that those who indulged in violence against Bhansali should be taken to task. There is no place for lumpen elements in our society.”

Rest of the piece is interesting and I agree somewhat that Bhansali either write his original fiction or depict facts.

Is Sanjay Leela Bhansali ignoring the most interesting love story of Alauddin Khilji?

“…..Khilji also had a weakness for beardless boys. He was fascinated by Kafur’s effeminate beauty and ended up buying the slave for a thousand Dinars during his conquest of Gujarat. Kafur took full advantage of Khilji’s enamour for him and rose through the ranks to become the Malik Naib (deputy ruler). This love affair between Khilji and Kafur is well documented in many books including the Tarikh-e-Firozshahi. It is believed that Khilji had almost 50,000 beardless boys in his harem at the height of his empire….”

If better than above 2 than the job is more or less done and will reach the required milestones with stardom of srk.

This is what movies are coming to… and each clash becomes a tamasha in upmanship. Obviously the smaller films tend to gain as clash gives them the extra buzz and some sort of ‘equal’ footing.

All India – Multiplexes have given 60 – 40 ratio to raees. All the biggest screens and best times have gone to Raees
SS – would be 65 to 35…Again the best have gone to Raees..
Raees will do 20+ cr on Day 1…Kaabil will do 12+ cr..My feel…

  11. Raees – 2/5
Director Rahul Dholakia goes the old school way by developing the characters from the childhood days and set the tone for a story revolving around a dreadful but kind-hearted smuggler. When Shah Rukh Khan makes an appearance on the screen for the first time, you know that only he can be Raees. The fierce eyes, the stylish walk and the attitude makes you envy the personality of the character. As the film progresses, the director gets into the commercial zone by setting up a love story between the characters which absolutely lacks the conviction. Even the bootlegging sequences in the first half despite being well shot don’t leave the desired impact owing to the poorly drafted screenplay. Most of the songs pop up out of nowhere as are forcefully added in the narration. The brightest moments of Raees are the first 20 minutes and each and every time Nawazuddin Siddiqui makes an appearance on the screen. Without getting into the depth of the storyline (Which is done to death), the climax of the film might turn off a wide audience base. The action sequences are surprisingly over the top and shot using the wires. The realism in action sequences is missing and the much spoken about action sequence in the meat market is toned down to a large extent. Apart from performances, another thing in favour of Raees are the dialogues as they don’t appear as forced and are used in normal conversations between the characters. But all said and done, despite a restrained runtime, Raees tends to drag at many places. As a film Raees had the potential to be dark, gritty and bad-ass (the dark quotient is visible in a few sequences), but sadly what we get is the toned down version of the film. The movie had the potential, but the chances are ruined because of poor screenplay and boring narration. PS: Watch out for Shah Rukh Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s entry scene! PS 1: Watch out for Shah Rukh Khan and Mahira Khan confrontation in second half!

The actor seems to be too preoccupied with doing a Bachchan and ending up like Raju Srivastav on a bad night. Investing in Mahira Khan’s visa was a wasted cause as the actress can barely construct half an expression
In one of the lesser melodramatic scenes from this film, we see SRK as the eponymous Raees, breaking down. His cheeks swell up like a puri and his head shakes like he’s having a seizure and even though not a single tear rolls out of his eyes, from the odd groan, we’re assured that he’s crying. His performance in the scene seems like a reaction to being forced to watch this film twice.

It’s got middling reviews so still fancy it to trample over Kaabil, in fact at face value there is some very positive ones too. Plus opening looks to be big. But there was no need for a clash. Hrithik will be pissed if he has a clean winner but due to clash the film doesn’t maximise.

And to top that he ran away from one clash to go head on with another. He must have felt confident that Gupta will make crap movie. With non holiday solo release the same movie would have done comparatively better.

Even HR hamminess is well documented and with very few parallels.
I think both movies will just be a blip on the radar in terms of total box-office earning and not going beyond 90cr for Kaabil and 120 cr for Raees. They have to get closer to this total by Sunday 29th because Monday onwards exam fever will take over the families and these are not sex comedies where college going crowd will bunk classes to see the movie.

  18. Kaabil V Raees: Raees Takes Huge Lead in Advance
    Tuesday 24 January 2017 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The big box office clash between Kaabil and Raees looks a bit of an anti climax as far as initial is concerned as the Shahrukh Khan starrer Raees has pulled a distance ahead. The advance of Raaes started late with some multiplexes only opening advance yesterday but it has notched up pre sales of 12.50 crore nett. Dangal was 16.50 crore nett, Sultan was 21 crore nett and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was 15 crore nett but these were Xmas, Eid and Diwali releases respectively and all were solo releases and no fighting for shows which leads to the advance opening late. The advance is excellent at both multiplexes and single screens with the single screens at muslim centres in Gujarat and UP having chances to witness record collections on a non holiday. Considering the situation its a huge advance and that will be reflected in the initial tomorrow as its looking to beat Kaabil easily all over unless the on the day crowd changes the scenario.

Kaabil had an advance which opened even later than Raees with the biggest multiplex chains PVR and Inox only opening yesterday but the results are below the mark. The single screen advance is poor while multiplexes are a little better but still low. The pre sales are around 3 crore nett and that is even lower than a film like Dishoom (2016) although the late opening advance can be an excuse but still Kaabil is a big film with a big star like Hrithik Roshan so should have more initial appeal. The film is going to be depending on how the public sees the film tomorrow. The biggest problem is that Kaabil looks a film that will be driven by Mumbai circuit but Raees is going to be super strong in Gujarat and Maharashtra giving Kaabil little chance initially where it can score best.

    • This looks like a Don-type response. That film wasn’t particularly liked by critics, but it was a decent hit. Raees might reach there too. A mass entertainer doesn’t always need exemplary reviews and seldom receives them anyway.

But point is, SRK is no massy hero like Salman, he does need plenty of multiplex support. Also, a passable hit is just not enough for him at this point. He desperately needed a film that would be loved by critics and audiences alike. The film with its violence and lack of strong emotional content is not going to get enough family audiences.

Sure Stan will have a say. Nadals side of draw hard to gauge, Raionic will be tough but if he gets through, you’d fancy him in semi.

The bookies have Federer as favourite to win with Stan second. Makes sense, winner of that semi is odds on to win slam.

Overshadowing the question of ‘When will Bollywood heroes play their age?’ is the larger one of ‘When will Bollywood grow up?’ Raees is nothing more than adolescent macho escapism, and if it turns out to be a hit, I guess we’ll have to wait.

It was very unfortunate as the deceased was an uncle of a journalist on board the train. He had come to the station with his kids to greet his niece and her mother who were on board the train too.
MissKyra team EXCLUSIVELY spoke to journalist Samina Shaikh whose uncle lost his life in Vadodara stampede incident. She revealed, “It’s unfortunate that my uncle lost his life due to suffocation in the crowd as he was a heart patient. However, Shah Rukh Khan and his team made sure that my mother and I reach safely to my uncle’s funeral. We got down at Ratlam and SRK’s team arranged a car for us to Vadodara to attend my uncle’s burial. ”
The journalist also spoke about how Shah Rukh Khan broke down while consoling her. Talking about it, she said, ” When I narrated the incident to Shah Rukh, he was in tears as he could genuinely feel the pain that I and my family were going through. Apart from making arrangements for me and my mother from Ratlam to Vadodara, he also made arrangements for my relatives who flew in from Mumbai to Vadodara to attend my uncle’s last rites. Though SRK was busy with his film’s promotions in Delhi event, he even made sure to know about my family and provided whatever help possible. ”
The deceased’s mother also spoke to MissKyra about SRK being unnecessarily dragged into a controversy regarding the matter. She said, ” We have nothing against Shah Rukh Khan as he is not at fault. He is also like my son, I would like to thank him for making last moment arrangements for our family to be a part of my son’s funeral. The incident has nothing to do with SRK’s ‘Raees’ promotional event, my son fell prey to the crowd and succumbed to death due to suffocation. All we want is prayers from everyone for my son. ”

One thing I just realized that last 24 hours not a single review of Kaabil has come out…Rediff and the usual outlets are also yet to post the review.

Raees took an excellent opening of 55-60% in its morning shows. It is the best opening since Sultan eclipsing the morning shows of Dangal. The opening at most single screens is better than Dangal and at places even better than Sultan which was a holiday. The multiplexes have also scored big even though the film looks more for mass centres but Shahrukh Khan is there so barring East Punjab which can only be called good, the multiplexes in other circuits are excellent. The clash and the release which is around 3400 screens will obviously curtail the final number a little compared to other big non holiday releases but occupancy for a non holiday are fantastic almost across the board. Gujarat is extraordinary due to the local base of the film, West Bengal which traditionally is a slow starter has opened well enough that it could be an all time opening day record in that circuit as evenings will be bumper due to the Shahrukh Khan factor.

Kaabil opened to around 20-25% which is a below average opening and it is second best to Raees all over the country. The opening is 25% of Raees at places and at places which have opened better comparatively it is 50% of Raees. In some circuits its going to be a huge gap between the two films. The only plus is that Kaabil is a big film and collections will get better as they are so low especially in the evening as its a big holiday tomorrow. Still its unlikely the growth will be good enough to result in a first day number which can be called good. Then it will be about the big National holiday for Republic Day where it will have to make huge gains if it is to make any mark at the box office. The opening morning has turned out to be a very one sided affair as far as the big clash is concerned.

I doubt Krish- 4 will happen due to costs involved and in anyways RR cannot release that before late 2019. He needs to continue doing Kaabil type small movies and angle the projects Ranveer – Varun – Ranbir are doing otherwise he will go Abhi ways.SRK and HR had absolute superstardom but both were out of sync and stoned out for last few years.

agreed on Raees.. if you’re relying on the big opening numbers you should at least maximize these.

of course SRK being wise about his scripts or some of this other stuff is an illusion in any case. If he had that sense/ability he’d have done it a long time ago. Since VZ in ’04 he’s had the top grosser of the year just once (OSO – 2007). He’s crossed 200 just once with CE, that too by not a whole lot. Otherwise you have a lot of good or big initials with the films more or less fizzling out. That’s still better than most others out there (clearly no one’s doing better than this at the moment). But it’s a very far cry from Salman or Aamir. He just doesn’t have the script sense for it, irrespective of the subject. Anyway let’s see how well or not Raees does.

  33. Opening Show Figures – Raees v Kaabil
    Wednesday 25 January 2016 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Raees took a huge lead against Kaabil in the morning shows across the country with collections more than double in many cities. The gap was bigger in the single screens where Raees took one of the best openings for a Shahrukh Khan starrer in recent times. Raees is looking at huge numbers in Gujrat, Nizam / Andhra and West Bengal. The collections in East Punjab and Delhi city were not as good as the rest of the country probably because its a Gujarat based film. Kaabil has a lot of work to do the opening is on th lines of films like Shivaay and Mohenjo Daro which also clashed with other films and came off second best. But here Kaabil is likley to lose by much wider numbers than those films. The plus is that it is a big holiday tomorrow and that should give a lift in the evening. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city..

    Mumbai (45 Cinemas)
    Raees – 7,521 admits
    Kaabil – 2,543 admits

    Delhi (25 cinemas)

  34. Raees Day 1 Box Office Collection Update
    01/25/201731

Raees Day 1 Box Office Collection Update:

Shahrukh Khan starrer Raees is one of the most awaited films in recent times. The film had been in the making for a long time but it still has excellent buzz and hype. 2017 has been started on a dull note with three box office flops but Raees is expected to end the dull phase. Check out Raees collection update for the 1st day.

Raees Day 1 Box Office Collection Update

    Raees Morning Shows Report:

The overall occupancy in the morning shows was around 60% in most of the circuits which is an extraordinary start. The Mumbai and Gujarat circuit has opened extremely well and has housefull shows at many places. It has started like a riot in West Bengal and especially in Kolkata where it practically opened to packed houses. That is incredible as the genre is not state friendly but still it has opened to an extraordinary response only due to the presence of Shahrukh Khan.

Central India is also doing good with more than 50% occupancy in the morning shows. The traditional Hindi markets in North India are decent but they are lagging behind other circuits. They need to improve in the evening. More data will be updated later.

Raees Day 1 Box Office Collection
In terms of occupancy, Raees has recorded one of the biggest openings. It is even better than Aamir Khan starrer Dangal which was released last December. The film is expected to show big gains as the day will progress. There will be holiday advantage coming into the picture in the evening which will boost Raees collection big time. You expected housefull shows in the evening and night.

As far the clash with Kaabil is concerned, Raees 1st day collection will have a big lead. That was evident yesterday also when SRK starrer had an excellent advance whereas Kaabil was only decent. Unless there is any turnaround in the evening, Raees will have around 9-10 crore lead today over Kaabil.

    2:00 PM Update:

Raees is rocking big time on the opening day. The single screens are almost housefull in most parts of the country due to the genre but even multiplexes are excellent due to the presence of Shahrukh Khan. After an excellent start, it is showing further gains. The opening is even better than Dangal which was a solo release and here Raees had a clash with a big film. In fact at some places, the opening is even better than Sultan which was a holiday release.

Raees 1st Day Box Office Collection Early Trends:

As per the early trends, Raees 1st day collection should be over 20 crore. The final collection will depend on how it performs in the later half of the day.

  35. Raees opening proves one thing very clearly that SRK is not done & dusted yet!! His star power is intact & content is what is letting him down. If & a big if at that is he gets his script sense right, he is still in the game with Aamir & Salman. He and his directors need to understand this fact at the earliest as he is not in his prime both age wise & box office standing!! But one silver lining this opening has given to SRK & his fans that he is still a force to reckon with!!

  36. Rajender Singh Jyala, VP-Programming and distribution AT INOX told BollywoodLife that Kaabil will positively OVERTAKE Raees. He said, “Raees had opened to almost full houses. Kaabil is shooting up now, it did not open to great numbers, but it is fighting back now. It opened with an occupancy of 40 per cent in the morning shows, but it has picked up since then. So Raees had upper hand according to the morning shows, but by the evening, Kaabil will catch up mostly.” Now, we have told you that Raees has earned Rs 12.5 crore through advance bookings and Kaabil is at Rs 3 crore. But will this change? Will Kaabil overthrow Raees at Box Office? Looks like Rakesh Roshan is very keen to. ALSO READ:Raees vs Kaabil WAR begins: Is Hrithik Roshan’s remark on Shah Rukh Khan’s film a jibe or well intentioned?
Speaking to the same entertainment website he dissed SRK for booking 55 per cent screens while leaving only 45 per cent screens to Kaabil and said, “Everything is getting dirty and unethical. No professionalism, no friendship, it’s (Bollywood) not a close knit family at all. It was in my time. Jeetendra, me and Rishi Kapoor are best of friends even today. That was the industry we were working in. Now just shaking hands that also we don’t know what they mean. Putting up a smile and kissing each other’s cheeks in front of the media. That’s not friendship.” Incidentally, Hrithik Roshan took to Twitter to wish Raees well and SRK replied with same warmth. This is a bit confusing for us, no?

In between there was some good fight and chase scenes, and two finishing off rivals, classy.

And like mentioned before here somewhere, there seems to have some re shots or rewriting involved and some rather sugary buidling of a model city etc..which doesn’t gel well. It does get in the way a bit of the smooth sailing of the story and shows up as the main flow.

  41. Initial is very important these days and when we look at how much Kaabil is lagging behind on its opening shows and most probably its opening day, then it is going to be hard to catch up.

The only way for Kaabil to catch up is if it is a much superior movie than Raees. The reviews till here are slightly more favorable for Kaabil but it does not look like there is that huge leap in terms of quality, like there was, for instance, between BM and Dilwale.

Raees’ initial owes as much to SRK’s stardom as to the impact of its trailer. I have seen a lot of persons who don’t really like SRK at all but going for Raees first. They liked the trailer. It is the kind of masala stuff that he has refrained from doing since his DDLJ days. And that was the main complaint from that part of the audience. From the guy who did Raju BGG, Baazigar and Ram Jaane, he simply stopped doing anything for that audience and got too much in the multi-plex/NRI kind of deals with Yash Raj and Kjo.

Salman understood the issue and went back to his roots with Wanted and Dabangg. SRK has probably left it too late but better late than never.

As if having a mutated crocodile in potentially one of the worst films in recent years (Mohenjo Daro, in case you were wondering) wasn’t enough, you go that extra mile and subject us to this humdrum of a film. Sure. It’s called Kaabil but the only ability it has is to subject its poor, unsuspecting audience to a migraine with the sheer banality of it all. And with Sanjay Gupta at the helm of these rather tired affairs, it seems like it’s a case of the blind leading the blind. Literally.

You may write a piece from the point of view that I am doing three back-to-back Muslim characters. With due respect to my professionalism as an actor, I did not even know what my name was in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. I just went for two hours, did some shots and had fun with my friends, Karan, Ranbir (Kapoor) and Aishwarya (Rai Bachchan). I wrapped up around 2 am and partied till 6 am before flying back to Lisbon.
Don’t create a point of view. These are films which were postponed for two years. I would still like to believe that in this day and age, an artist is there to put across entertainment in the best way he or she thinks is possible. We don’t hold the audience responsible or at gun-point that they have to like every movie and point of view.

So, why is it that somewhere down the line, in this race of being the first ones to inform or to be the first ones with a certain point of view, media uses other people? Have the dignity to ask: “Are you with me?” We can both talk about it… Or, are you always going to utilise snippets, bytes, pieces and words to somehow bolster your point of view?

Raees Crushes Kaabil On Day One

The Raees and Kaabil clash has turned out to be a very one sided affair on day one with Raees crushing the competition and taking a huge lead. Its unlikely that two major films released on the same day have seen such a big difference in collections on day one. The early estimates are around 21 crore nett for Raees and 7.50 crore nett for Kaabil. The star power of Shahrukh Khan has gunned down the star power of Hrithik Roshan. The latter also came out second best with the clash on Independence Day week as Mohenjo Daro grossed 8.80 crore nett on day one and the competition which was Akshay Kumar’s Rustom grossed 13.92 crore nett. Still there the gap was reasonable but here its looking at a difference of over 13 crore nett just on one day.

Kaabil has performed below the mark all over with some circuits being practically being wiped out due to Raees. The film was never that hot but still a Mohenjo Daro type of number should have come at least as Hrithik Roshan is still one of the top stars. The film needs to pick up big time and that is just to avoid becoming a disaster as it needs double digit numbers for all the days remaining in its extended weekend just to stay afloat.

Raees has scored very well all over especially in Muslim dominated areas, the only area which probably should have done better is Delhi city and East Punjab. The film is not really for these markets and it is because of Shahrukh Khan that the film has at least good collections in Delhi and East Punjab even though they are not as good as the rest of the country. The scored very well in Gujarat, West Bengal and South India. There is a big holiday tomorrow for Republic Day and it should improve further but it will be the Friday-Sunday business that will determine how big the five day weekend turns out to be.

I was thinking VVC/Hirani will take a call after Tubelight run and checking its box office turn and content but this clash will make them think twice or be ready get slaughtered at the ticket windows, not just with the initials but overall as Salman has zoned out towards milky way galaxy. Plus Ranbir is still to develop his fan base even after being in industry for 10 years now.

Keeping above in mind Raees/Kaabil clash outcome will be a documented forewarning.

And BM dominated Dilwale, so Xmas is far more sensible for clashes. I doubt Hirani even cares if TZH is released. He’s chasing excellence remember not success.

Hirani and Aamir time the filming keeping release in mind.

Yes they will be able to build the chatter around clash and get people interested and then at the end of the day blame poor run to clash like what RR will do now though I like both Roshans and feel bad here.

Anyway it’s all still far off and discussion can take place when we get to it if we are still hanging around.

I for one thought with ADHM, KJO was going to take a shot at 200 cr Diwali patakha. It had everything the chartbuster songs, dances, moments, drama , cast & comedy…..but lacked ‘stars’ to carry it off.

Please don’t compare Sanjay Dutt with a Ranbir because at one time after Bachchan he was the only worthy successor to superstardom but for his personal turbulences and turmoils….

Yes Hirani has already asserted to make Dutt biopic humorous / lighter fun movie but Dutt life has been too dark and core audience may get put off by a complete lie….so it may work on one level but miss the boat on another !

  48. Bobby Deol On Lost Stardom, Plans Of Reviving It, And How Imtiaz Ali Seemingly Screwed Him Over

    http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2017/01/25/bobby-deol-on-lost-stardom-plans-of-reviving-it-and-how-appare/

Do you like the current crop of actors?

Alia Bhatt is amazing. So are the rest of them. But I still feel there’s something missing in them. I wanted to watch Alia’s Highway but I couldn’t get myself to.

    Why?

I was to do it. I was also to do Jab We Met. Back then, it was titled Geet. I had seen Socha Na Tha and instantly reached out to Imtiaz saying that he’s an incredible storyteller with a terrific future. I told him that I wanted to work with him and he had the script of (what is now) Jab We Met ready. He was looking for financiers.

There was a studio called Shri Ashtavinayak who wanted to sign me. I told them that let’s sign Imtiaz. He has a script ready. And let’s talk to Kareena Kapoor (Bobby had worked with Bebo in Ajnabee). The producers were like, oh no, that guy will make an expensive film. Kareena, on the other hand, didn’t even want to meet Imtiaz. I took them to Preity (his close friend and Soldier co-star). She agreed but said she can do it only after 6 months. So we were stuck.

Days passed. And suddenly I read that Ashtavinayak has signed Imtiaz for Jab We Met and Kareena is doing the film! And she had gotten her then boyfriend, Shahid Kapoor to act opposite her. I was like, wow. Quite an industry. We were also to do Highway together but he again did his own thing. But I have no hard feelings against him. He is a great director and doing so well. We’re still friends. But I always tell him: ‘Imtiaz, I won’t watch any of your films until you make one with me. That’ll be your best film.”

  49. I am disappointed on Hrithik’s failure, now he is down to the level of the also rans, he made stupid decisions after another and has lost the single screen roots that he got due to D2 and KNPH etc. Well as far as SRK is concerned, he is in the game big time. A 150 Cr number for Raees will mean SRK will gain the momentum for his Imitiaz Ali starrer and back that up with his special appearance in TL, this will be his master plan to gear up for his Christmas release with Anand L Rai, for which he would be focused on 300 cr + Number.

Somehow i dont get this rhetoric of Muslim Dominated Areas? Anyways SRK bouncing back is good.

Then i think Aamir is missing this spotlight like Salman and SRK but then i see the Mega Blockbuster and Critical Appreciation of the movies is with him. Thats his strength and he will continue to go after it.

  52. Harsha Bhogle unplugged: Candid truths on BCCI sack, Big B, insecurity in cricket
By Akshay Sawai, ET Bureau | Updated: 23 Jan, 2017, 16:29 hrs IST

Nearly a year since Harsha Bhogle’s controversial ouster from the commentary box, he is in his unpretentious South Mumbai office, in jeans and black sneakers, humming `Chhoti si asha’. But there is another piece of music we discuss -`Mai pal do pal ka shaayar hoon’.

In his tribute to MS Dhoni on cricbuzz.com, Bhogle revealed that `Mai pal do pal’ was the former Indian captain’s favourite song. It’s all transitory, the song says. It is also the right philosophy, perhaps, for Bhogle to embrace as he deals with his professional setback.

“I do think I take that approach [now]. Initially, I took it very badly, I’ll be honest,” Bhogle says, a window to his right, and behind him a `Friends of Australia’ poster. He speaks softly but is engaged in the conversation, which is evident from the varying pitch of his seasoned voice. Candid statements are likely to be made in a flat tone.Emotional ones are delivered almost in a hoarse whisper, supported by gesticulation and a narrowing of eyes.

“No one told me what the matter [the reason for his sacking] was,” he says. “If someone had said `You’re not good enough’, that would’ve been fine. Some big players have been told that.Suppose I was told I violated a broadcasting ethic, even that would have been fine. But nobody could look me in the face and tell me, `This is the reason’. Eventually, I said if that’s what it is, that’s what it is. It’s been the biggest learning experience of my career.Offers started coming right away. Everyone thinks doors are shut, which is true… (pause)…but windows are open.”

Bhogle’s video blogs on Cricbuzz have received over 50 million views. And with his wife Anita, who runs a corporate speaking program, he has done 47 events since April 2016.

    The Bachchan factor

An irony is brought to Bhogle’s notice.
`Mai pal do pal’ was filmed on Amitabh Bachchan, the man whose tweet about a telecast last year reportedly led to the commentator’s exit. Bachchan felt the commentators should have spoken more about Indian players. It was an oblique reference to Bhogle. Dhoni shared Bachchan’s tweet and fanned the flames.

“We are different people in different situations,” Bhogle says about the tweet. “I actually wrote to Mr Bachchan. I sent him a DM [Direct Message], saying how for the past 40 years I have admired him.

Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet about a telecast reportedly led to Bhogle’s exit.

When I was in college in Hyderabad, and if his film was releasing on Friday, a friend of mine would bunk class on Monday to get tick ets for the Saturday show.I also admired him for the dignity with which he carried himself. And I said in the message to him that given a chance, I will be happy to come and explain things to him.” Bhogle says Bachchan sent him a delayed but long reply. He does not reveal what the message said. “It was polite,” Bhogle says.

Bhogle, however, maintains it is worrisome that there is growing acceptance that broadcasters should align themselves on one side. “What I did explain [to Bachchan] was that on the Hindi telecast, we were very India-centric, though not biased, because the telecast was going only to this market. But we couldn’t do that with the English telecast, as it was going to various countries. In the past, Indian listeners would get angry when foreign commentators did not speak enough about the Indian team. We cannot be like that to the others.”

    Advice to Dravid

“I can feel insecure at times,” Bhogle says. This is surprising given his popularity and body of work. Somewhere, success must have changed him. Not much, he says. He credits Anita for keeping him grounded. “My wife will not let that happen,” he says.

And it is for that reason he once told Rahul Dravid something.

“I remember telling Rahul many years ago, `Rahul, do any thing, don’t marry a fan’,” Bhogle says. “You must have someone who’ll tell you when you are do ing something wrong. That you were arrogant that day. You were insensitive that day. But if you mar ry a fan, who’s going to tell you that?

And I worry about some of our younger players because one of the problems with making money very early is everyone wants a piece of you. It happens a lot to our movie stars.”

    The golden generation

Bhogle’s reply when asked who his friends in Indian cricket comes in an instant, “I don’t know. Sometimes it’s good not to have too many.” And then with some pain he says, “But I do miss the generation that’s gone. Sachin [Tendulkar], Rahul [Dravid], Anil [Kumble], Sourav [Ganguly], Srinath, [VVS] Laxman… It was a beautiful generation, where I never had to worry about what I’m saying. When Sachin was struggling, I once said, `Here’s an emperor walking the streets like a common man’. I did not hear back from anyone that, `Sachin did not like that’.

I could be completely frank, to the extent that Sourav on air asked me my opinion on something. I declined and told Sourav that he was the one who had played at the highest level. And he said, `How many World Cups have you covered? Go ahead, I want to know what you think’.”

The young don’t care about reputations

Not every player-turned-commentator has been gracious to Bhogle as Ganguly. Few viewers care about the position of the elbow yada-yada-yada, and yet ex-players make a big deal about their credentials over those who have not played professional cricket. “The image created in our cricket is if you haven’t played, you can’t live,” Bhogle says. “It stems from insecurity and arrogance. How many trucks did Ratan Tata drive? Does it mean he can’t run his company? It’s a very narrow way of looking at things.”

The only way for non-players to become commentators in this era, Bhogle says, is if TV bosses accept that the telecast is going to a wide audience. And you need people who relate to the wider audience, not a niche one. “The new generation of Indians is intolerant of reputations,” Bhogle says.”They’ll say `so what if you have played 50 Tests. Are you telling me a good story?

  53. Back from RAEES!! Well, this is one of the wholesome films from SRK in ages. The film starts well with Raees childhood who gets his mother’s sayings and then start to live by them in his life. The whole graph from child to adult by working under someone and then trying to open his own business by using his brains is done very well. Then slowly becoming a thorn to other goons, he slowly and steadily kills his competetion to become the ultimate king of illegal liquor smuggling. Once he comes he has all police, politicians under his thump except a no-nonsense honest cop in Majumdar played by Nawazuddin.

The first half is pretty much very smooth sailing and no hurdles. The 2nd half time shifts as Raees plans to move into construction by building a colony for their area people. Here he is caught between politicians trick and sent to jail. To come out if jail, he runs elections and become victorious. Soon the colony plan gets stopped and then he ends up doing something unknowingly which forms the basis for climax and end. The 2nd half could have been something else but it has been integrated well but still it just makes the movie heavy and not repeat watchable to an extent.

SRK is in terrific form and its a full display of emotions without hardly any disinterested/loose scenes. Even though it is not full realistic movie but SRK has been in total sync with the character and never stepped out to display his regular mannerisms. Nawaz performed simply great and is actually scene stealer at places (with smart dialogues to his aid) and rises above role’s potential. Mahira Khan looked better than promos and did fine job as its more of supporting role to Raees’s character and not of real lead role. From the rest of the cast Zeeshan Ayub did good and all smaller actors like Atul Kulkarni, Narendra Jha, Jaideep Ahlawat etc had good characters to play around.

Music is fine with couple of great tracks including Laila song. The songs could have been major hindrance(still is to a minor extent) but has been integrated very well and there’s story montages in all songs and none of them are item or added songs such can be skipped.

The main strength of the movie is performances by SRK and Nawaz and their dialogues. Both of their looks are great with SRK pathanis and sweater look for cop. Action sequences are fine. Sets and all settings of 70’s, 80’s are done well and it is good visual to see old phones and not mobile phones on screen.

The proceedings and violence and heavy base might keep away women audience and that will limit the business. The movie is also little heavy to have easy multiple watches on big screen. That could also limit the final total. 10 mins trimming in 2nd half could help. Still as my expectation said earlier, this movie might end up doing 160 to 180 crores which would be good success considering the subject material and presentation. Unless the audience really takes on the movie and crosses 200cr which I can’t predict now and would be huge hit.

    Overall, movie is RECOMMENDED!!

  62. Kaabil Has Low Day One
    Thursday 26 January 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kaabil had a low start on day one and could not really pick up the pace and collected just 7.75-8 crore nett on day one. Krrish in 2006 had collected 6 crore nett on just 900 screens which this film on almost three times the screens and almost 11 years later hardly does much better. Kites in 2010 managed to open to 10 crore nett plus on 1600 screens. It sort of puts into perspective the initial of the film. The film did have a issue on release as a multiplex chain dropped its shows on day of release to favour Raees. But even here that multiplex chain had little choice as it had only opened advances a day earlier and seeing the difference in advances they would be losing business if they did not give Raees more screenings. Also it hardly makes any difference as if you can’t collect on an X amount of shows you are hardly likely to do better if you have more shows, in fact its the opposite the occupancy will drop further..

The collections were not even able to match Mohenjo Daro which was Hrithik Roshan’s last release and also clashed with another film Rustom but maybe it has to be taken into account that Raees is a bigger film than Rustom. This is something the makers should also have seen and released Kaabil a couple of weeks earlier. The film has not collected well anywhere but places like West Bengal, Bihar and Gujarat are even worse. The hope is probably that its a big national holiday for Republic Day and there is huge spare capacity for the film so the potential is there for big jump in business. The bigger problem is that if the huge jump does somehow come is that it will have to hold at those levels on Friday and over the weekend.

The film was also released in Tamil and telugu which grossed around 25 lakhs nett.

  63. Raees Has Strong First Day
    Thursday 26 January 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Raees did very well on day one as it grossed 20.25-20.50 crore nett on day one. The film easily beat the competition of Kaabil as it put up far higher numbers. The business of the film is similar to Dilwale released in 2015 but on the face of it that was a bigger film for an initial although eventually the content was not accepted in India. The film scored very strongly in Mumbai, South and West Bengal while CP Berar was also strong. The other markets were decent to good with the under performance coming in East Punjab. Delhi city was also lower but the whole DUP circuit recovered somewhat with the business of UP. The film having a Gujarat base and flavor probably affected the collections up North. South India should also not being these numbers for a mass film like this but the Shahrukh Khan factor worked there big time.

Despite a big first day the film and Kaabil not being much of a factor on day one it would still probably have done 4-5 crore nett more if it was a solo release. It managed to get 3400 screens which is good for a clash but the fact is you get less of those peak time screenings with a clash and even if the other film is not really collecting you can’t afford to have less peak time shows as that is when collections are best.

There is a big national holiday and collections will jump in most places though places which are strong like South and West Bengal may not show huge growth as they are already high. North India will show good growth but the Friday business in north is more crucial as if the film sustains there then it will definitely emerge a winner. The opening day number is the fourth highest ever for a Shahrukh Khan starrer after Happy New Year, Chennai Express and Dilwale.

Nawazudheen was adequate, cold, clever and indifferent. There wasnt a fight, even a chase scene between him and Raees, to really involve him in action. Maybe it is somewhat due to the reputation also, that him just being there means terrific acting..a parallel cinema kind of track..

I liked the sidekick role actor, named Sadiq in the movie, more. And I am thankful, the cliche of the sidekick dying somewhere towards the end was avoided in the movie!

      • Agreepath required multiplex era to work .. audience in 1990 (Majority was lower working class) was not smart enough to get the voice change over by Amitabh, they thought it is some sound issue. At that time 60-70% cinemas were talkies with Dabba sound .. Agneepath required technologically advanced theater for experience. Still movie got around 3 Crore audience in long run which was not bad .. but bachchan standard for event movies was much higher. Coolie drew more than 8 Crore footfalls .. which was highest of 80’s decade.

        • I doubt it had anything to do with multiplex and audience taste. It was a bakwas movie and badly directed. Mukul Anand was selling him all the baloney and Khuda Gawah was another ott idiocy making him be different. There were two major flaws in this movie which turned off the ‘movie paying audience’ and one was Bachchan’s experimentation with his voice trying to do a hoarse Marlon Brando (Godfather) or a Al Pacino (Scarface) and then there was all the hamminess throughout the movie……playacting to be precise.

A major part of all the parody we get on comedy nights etc these days with ‘hainnn’ and ‘aayee saala’ and ‘apun ko’ etc may have originated during this stage of his career. Suddenly the all appealing ‘apun saala’ , ‘ kai ko’ and ‘phodh dalegaa’ of Amar Akbar Anthony became a sore visual in the later part his innings…. Look at the scene in the link below and compare this to what he was doing in Don, Deewar and Trishul or even with the famous drunkard scene of AAA…….actors degenerate with time.

          • This ridiculousness has gone on for too long. I stay away from commenting on such comments but there’s some straw that breaks the camel’s back.

**It was a bakwas movie and badly directed. Mukul Anand was selling him all the baloney and Khuda Gawah was another ott idiocy making him be different. **

Any hardly-dying or a driving-hard-drunk fan of Salman Khan ‘Bhai’ has NO business talking of ‘acting’ credentials of other actors. Period. As Amitabh says in PINK, actor-manual number 1 – Fans of an ‘actor’ who has not evolved beyond a freaking 2-note expressions since 1989 hardly has any business even using words like ‘hamminess’ associated to an actor like Dhawan let alone Amitabh Bachchan. This is literally like Suresh Kalmadi commenting on the honesty of an Anna Hazare or a ‘Bhai’ commenting on the driving capabilities of a Schumacher.

AGNEEPATH is a ‘bad’ film!!! What the hell? It was the 1990s. In 1989, you had the seminal PARINDA and in ’88, you had NAYAKAN. Mukul Anand made a film that was a technological re-working of DEEWAR – a very, very promising director. The intent was that. There was an evolving ‘technology’ in the mood.

Yes, no doubt it was heavily lifted from SCARFACE and DEEWAR but the brilliant honesty with which Mukul shot the film was outstanding. Consider the scene where Amitabh talks of the ‘dishonesty’ of a phone conversation; or his confrontation with Deepak Shirke and the slimy mud fight: This is histrionics of the highest order – a fantastic depiction IN LINE with the pitch the movie aimed for: Not for some stupid reason has Amitabh’s act become a cult-classic on which the mathematically-challenged Roshan’s son piggy-rode on AGNEEPATH and made a PAANIPATH of a film with his shedding bucket of tears whether there was a scheduled power-shut down in his chawl or whether Chopra decided to have a lunatic birthday song.

I mean, I should really not take this comment seriously but for a Salman Khan fan to comment on Amitabh is the height of whatever you want to call it — an actor who Satyjajit Ray WISHED would have worked with but had to be content with having a voice-over in SHATRANJ KE KHILADI: An actor whom Desai would scold when Amitabh wound up on his shoot after working with Mukherjee that one is out of Hrishikesh’s shoot and now is in MANMOHAN’s world – and it would take all of 5 minutes for this actor to straddle the world of Desai and Hrishikesh or Sippy or chatterjee’s films.

This actor’s ‘hamminess’ is talked about by a fan of an actor who has carried the same expressions as tweeted by his father right from his birth!!

            Go figure..

As ‘Bhai’ himself says: When we made PHIR MILENGE – a meaningful film – SAALA EK KUTTA BHI NAHI AAYA DEKHNE KO — this is Salman the ‘actor’ trying to ‘act’ sitting on a wheel-chair…yes, here, he himself is handling the wheel-chair..

Satyam, I know we all don’t like CIGAETTE SMOKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH at the corner of the screens but I think you should start implementing it on certain comments..

        • Yes please start blocking and banning comments the minute inadequacies of the so called ‘Devta of acting’ and ‘God of cricket’ are sighted. So much for representative and impartial commenting…… Please don’t bully and indulge in ‘thought control’ just because it differs from your point of view at ‘any given time’. I say ‘any given time’ because choices / thoughts / likings change and we are public and we decide what is good and bad if anyone is putting himself up there in the public arena. Something I may have revered earlier may be a target of my antipathy because I am the master of my own choices at any given time.

Members here abuse, ridicule and deride Salman so many times and do I get riled up? I just offer an alternative side of Salman which many miss here which is why he is where he is outside this blog. And what is this about a Salman fan not fit to talk about ‘acting’ baloney? Just few weeks back I listed all the great hindi movies I loved in the last decade and except BB where the fuck is there any mention of Salman movies there. So being a fan of a particular star I cannot enjoy and comment on movie of anyone else because you ‘own’ that actor?

I accept I am not a good writer but with my limited vocabulary I just offered a point of view on Agneepath which I had disliked just the way I hated SRK’s Don. I hated Mukul Anand (god rest his soul in peace) because he tried to film scene in hollywood style with bull shit lighting and angles and failed. As regular viewer / audience I was disturbed I could not make a shit out there and saw a great actor getting butchered on screen. Thats why I offered a link with that evidence. I could freakin spam the shit out of this blog with hundreds of such hammy links but I don’t do that.

Well if it pleases you I can stop commenting if my commenting is hurting your feelings. But my two cents to people here please counter comment on the content without getting personal as no celebrity is our mai baap and even if we praise them repetitively or criticize them like a broken record. Questioning people intellect, or how dumb they are to think like this or that, a person needs to be from Bihar if he/she does not enjoy a multiplex movie etc…. I will suggest tone it down if you don’t wish to be insulted yourself. Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

          • An Jo you can continue with your thought process. My comment was just my frustrations with Bollywood faltering whenever they have attempted a Indian Pacino / Godfather. BV was hidden behind that Mumbai Fables novel shit but all along it was Kashyap trying to do a Pacino of Scarface with Ranbir. These movies cannot be generated at anybody’s whims and the process is time consuming. There is a story behind Marlon Brando preparation and how he stuffed his cheeks with cotton wool to get those famous jowls of Vito Corleone and to date remains a fascinating character on screen. That is the dedication and preparation required which unfortunately barring Aamir none posses in Hindi cinema at the moment or even before.

I have already said SRK keepings falling flat in that genre with Raam Jaane, Duplicate, Don and then there was Dilwale lately. I have not seen Raees but will check it out this weekend. Aamir knows his limitations so never experimented with that genre and in fact backed out from even a Darr with negative shades something which was so well flushed out and made SRK the superstar we know.

Surprisingly Devgn has been the best gangsta for me in Hindi movies whether it was playing a Dawood Ibrahim in Company or Othello take in Omkara. He even did well as Haji Mastan with Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. The best gangster Indian movie for me is still Satya and loved that ‘quiet’ Chakravarty guy. I have fondness for gangsters when they are quiet and talk less rather doing chapad chapad like a cheapster. Bachchan in original Don was thoroughly enjoyable for those very reasons. Even Dilip Kumar was fantastic in Vidhaata. Yes Salman too in tapori gangster mode in Wanted worked for me though it had a twist in the end.

I say ‘any given time’ because choices / thoughts / likings change and we are public and we decide what is good and bad if anyone is putting himself up there in the public arena. **

Livewire, please don’t turn this around and try to lay a guilt trip. This is NOT about whether one likes anyone or dislikes. This is about ‘consistency’ in one’s thought-process. If one is so interested in dissecting ‘minute’ inadequacies of Amitabh as an actor, it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect that one dissects one’s idol with the same scissor.

Honestly, the only question I have for yo is:

            1) How-ever many bums on the seat Salman might bring in, is he on par, or, a ‘better’ star-actor than Amitabh?

If your answer to the above question is YES, then there is nothing left to be discussed.

If no, then just for your information, here’s what PETER NAPSTAD — you know, those folks who are used to stuff like
Stalinslavsky’s method acting — wrote on Amitabh in Agneepath –

“But Amitabh is great. Granted, Amitabh is nearing fifty at this point and perhaps not the best choice for yet another “angry young man” performance, but he nails it anyway. He had been in politics — had been encouraged by his friend, then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and was elected in 1984. But he gave up his seat in parliament before his term was up, having been implicated in one of the biggest scandals of Gandhi’s government, in which it was claimed that the Swedish Bofors field gun company paid huge bribes to Congress politicians and officials in order to win a big $1.3 billion contract to supply weapons to the Indian Army. Bachchan stepped down, and fought implications of his involvement in the conspiracy in court and in the media. At the same time he vowed to never enter government again. And suddenly, there is AGNEEPATH. He had walked the path of fire, he was ridiculed by the people, but he was still standing. And not only that, he is just about unstoppable. There are a couple TERMINATOR-like moments that are just fabulous. Sure, you can put a few bullets in Vijay, but so what? As he tells his opponents early on in the film, as he lays his gun on the table, “Bullets will not decide who wins this contest. Fate will decide it.”” [http://www.illuminatedlantern.com/cinema/review/archives/agneepath.php]

And here’s Rangan, who, clearly states that this isn’t one of his favorite Amitabh’s performances, but still conveys how it was important that Amitabh performed the way he performed –

” At no point in Agneepath was I able to buy Hrithik Roshan as a gangster. The Bachchan performance in the earlier film is not one of my favourites – but even amidst the very showy (and distracting) histrionics, we were never allowed to lose sight of the anger within the character. And without that anger, there is no fire – no matter how many times you recite Agneepath.”

As I mentioned in one of my comments on DANGAL, ‘showiness’, at some stage or other of an actor’s life, comes into picture [Kamal Haasan in MAHANADI]. But bare-bones are revealed when one is thrown out of one’s comfort zone or lethargy – Kamal Hassan’s performance post-superstardom on the heels of Mohanlal’s DRISHYAM – blew me out of my mind and is a case in PAPANASAM is a case in point. That is the ‘true’ strength of a star-actor: Because the innate talent is never lost; it is just invested away in a locker to bring it back when a film ‘demand’s it; and the success of a star-actor is when he or she is able to ‘command’ such talent at his or her will.

Could you please provide us folks any evidence of such ‘evolution’ or ‘devolution’ in the career of Salman Khan as an ‘actor’?

When Nawaz says that ‘Bhai’ won’t give a ‘second’ take you dismiss it off as the result of Salman’s ‘prodigious’ talent, and then, in the same breath, you question Amitabh’s ‘haminess’ in AGNEEPATH?? You talk of Brando stuffing cotton balls in his jowls, but then talk of ‘connection’ to the audience that Salman has as the MOST important thing ever!!

I, for one, have never said that Amitabh cannot be bad in a film. He was at his WORST in SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA.It was as though he was ‘doing’ a job there. It had indifference written all over it. But Amitabh’s performance in AGNEEPATH or KHUDA GAWAH can hardly be considered ‘hammy.’

And your comparison of Amitabh’s performance in DON to his performance in AGNEEPATH is totally, completely wrong. They are TOTALLY 2 different worlds, with only the word DON uniting them..

PS: It would be encouraging for you to read the way Amitabh portrayed his role in DEEWAR in his posts..here..

          • The answer to your question is a big NO. Have I ever mentioned anywhere that Salman is better star-actor than a Bachchan or even comparable? In fact may be not even 10% when Bachchan is in top form. Since you brought it up and on an aside why can’t we at the same time admit that Salman phenomenon is much more intelligent than you and many here credit him for being accomplished, savvier with required skill set for his profession and is not all dhinka chika bhaandgiri. He is no Rajesh Khanna who went phuss like a fad after couple of years. Ideally he should have been out of circulation by late 90s if his antics were just a passing fancy. There is more depth to him then this blog credits him. (Anyways that is for another time to discuss)

My comment was about a movie I was frustrated with and wished to like and do well …..may be the way I root for some of the other stars now. All these Agneepath, Hum and Khuda Gawah (don’t remember the box office) did not turn out to be a craze like a Namak Halal, Naseeb or even a Khuddar. Few of them were outright hilarious in a bad way like those Ganga Jamuna Saraswati , Toofan , Jaadugar , Insaaniyat. For purists even a Shahenshah never realized its full potential and the same paan chewing adorable Vijay of Don was out of place in Shahenshah in that police officer part and cringe worthy to watch. My comment was also hinting at cronyism when at various stages of stardom people (newbie directors /producers) come and sell ideas to the falling hero,, massage their egos and few of them are outright hacks and I thought Mukul Anand though not a hack was highly overrated and overestimated. Sadly due to his untimely death we would never know in absolute terms.

Secondly don’t ever mention actors don’t ham. It happens even in Hollywood with a Cruise and Affleck and when you watch some of the mid 90s Deniro and Al Pacino they have been accused of playacting. Also it’s a fact actors degenerate and become a parody of them with time. Bachchan deterioration had started with Sharaabi (a movie I liked but never loved) and there were borderline hammy scene which seemed like a marvel in a Namak Halal but out of place in these new movies. I don’t remember bachchan filmography properly but from late 80s to 2000 he was atrocious and embarrassing for a good part as an actor. This is a fact you cannot deny as an honest observer…. ……rest there is no debate. Media narratives as Satyam very recently pointed out are driven with time and era for example suddenly salman replaces a srk in these narratives.

Good actors pick themselves and make that correction with time like Deniro or Pacino have done with Meet The Focker and Joy lately…..and Bachchan comes in the same category of greats and finally grounding himself to top form with Pink and a Piku with audience appreciation visible in box office terms after all those years of wilderness and empty theater where sadly not many kuttas visited otherwise Buddha Hoga Tera Baap would be a box-office marvel.

“She plays a suave businesswoman, and there will be different shades to her character. She has already joined the sets and has already shot for a week,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

The film is the sequel to “Vela Illa Pattathari”, and it’s being directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth.

Asked if the rumours about Kajol playing the antagonist are true, the source said: “Her character is such that she will lock horns with Dhanush, but that doesn’t qualify to make her the antagonist.

“Audiences are in for a surprise when they watch the film.”

The film will be predominantly shot in Pune, apart from a few places in southern India.

Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films is bankrolling the project.

I have always said the same thing…look at their numbers, not their words. I go there for numbers. If it’s opinions I want then there are far better places to go.

          • thecooldude, you’re not understanding my point. Eg BOI theoretically has stated fact on Us numbers at face value. The narrative laid to bear is optically Raees has opened bigger than Dangal…That’s the headline act and story. The devil is always in the detail, eg Dangal did not release full day so the numbers are factually correct like you keep saying but they are comparing apples to oranges as usual. A casual viewer would be manipulated, that is what this site is doing. It props up figures for SRK figures on opening…I know this as NG had all the figures. You compare now those same numbers are adjusted.

Numbers are declared on release to serve a propaganda story, without anyone knowing … Months or years later they are changed. One glaring example is OSO. At the time of release it’s total collection were well over 80 CR on BOI like 85 CR if memory serves me right, now they are 78 CR. It’s a few CR – minor stuff but still peddling lies.

Also, do checkout how BOI treated HNY when it came out. When every BO pundit gave it a 44 CR opening (I think it was 42 hindi and 2 regional) which were the producers using the Roshan Sr. calculator, BOI stuck with their number (forgot if it was 37 or 38). This is what I mean. They NEVER take producers numbers and there so called SRK bias was not really evident that day.

      • Looks almost certain as even if its a few lakhs short, Papa Roshan’s calculator will take it ahead…
And now this is the only holiday these two films will see in their run. So much fight and bad blood for 6-7 crs extra…

The loser here is Raees. Even if kaabil had released solo, I don’t think it would have done more than 20 crs more than what it would otherwise do in its run. But Raees was a movie which needed a solo run as it had potential. Even without a holiday it would have opened big due to its super trailor and massy feel and that was proved by yesterdays opening. IMO just the first 2 days would be nearing 70crs when now it is sitting with 46 crs..Over its entire run, it might end up losing a sizeable amount.
I do get that it is not tremendously liked but the movie seems on a surer footing than a Dilwale or a Happy New Year…It might end up crossing Dilwale (already it is 6 crs ahead over first 2 days) but i don’t know if it can get to 180 to 190 cr range of HNY. Without a clash that would have been a cakewalk and maybe even 250 crs was possible…
Such a disastrous decision – all for a single holiday, so much bad blood, so much loss in collection – I don’t know what it all achieved except a few inflated egos. They say common sense is not so common, and we see examples of that so clearly..

        • Agree totally. Clashing is a bad decision and I kept saying it can’t cross 200 in a non festive period. It is almost impossible unless you have 3I or Dangal type of WOM. I also kept saying at best it’ll be best above average WOM as its that type of movie which can’t gather 100% wom. Besides the subject matter keeping families and women away. Almost all my points are correct.

          Like

          • If it can get to 100 cr in 5 days (which it should) it can get to 200 crs…But nothing beyond as even with a better than good WOM, Jolly LLB will take over lot of screens…
20 + 26 + 18 + 20 + 24 will take it to 108 crs…Then if it can be around 11 to 12 cr on MOnday, then it can get pretty close to crossing 200 crs..

Dilwale was around 10 cr on its first Monday which was its 4th day though…This can be close to 11 to 12 crs considering it has more support from smaller centres and better feedback..

But you do have a point on the genre of the movie…I haven’t seen it but if it is more on the lines of Agneepath, there can be a limiting factor in that kind of masala..

        • I agree, the clash has been particularly unfavourable for Raees, because it was the film with all the craze. Even if it did not have long legs, it could have maximised its business in one or two weeks and reached a much bigger total. And of course, if it had long legs, it could have had a short at some of the records. If Kaabil is not decimated, and continues to keep up with Raees albeit at a much lower end, it does mean loss of screens and serious revenue for the film with the better potential. I think Raees should have released in the OK Jaanu week – would have maximised business. Also, Rakesh Roshan is no pushover. if SRK is cunning, RR is a fiercely protective father who will use his influence and long years in the business to do anything to prop up Hrithik’s film.

I think Jan last week was fine with audience getting a break and then coming back to movies. Just there shouldn’t have been a clash.

            Liked by 1 person

          • This whole “I need a holiday to get to the highest total” is the biggest myth around…One of these days Aamir should release a movie on a non holiday month and debunk it. All a movie needs is 3 weeks of open run…It doesn’t need a single holiday and if content is there it can get to the biggest totals. Dangal was somewhat an example as though it didn’t have a holiday it still was the holiday season. Till now no movie has gone past 200 releasing in the non holiday period. I think YJHD was the highest…But that’s more due to the lack of content…
IMO Raees should have released in the week when Baar Baar Dekho released. It was another Excel movie which pretty much didn’t need that period for release. And Yes even a early Jan release would have been fine for it. All in all , irrespective of the films fate, a big lost opportunity for SRK as he has already lost 70 odd crs off the final total with this clash…

But yes, point is a film can still do very well without a holiday, as long it gets most of the screens to itself, and can maximize its potential.

With solo release it could have targeted around 250crrs+
Now it will be doing what? Around 150-160crrs?
SRK is called business minded but I am not sure or he can calculate the gain/loss in clash during holiday or solo release during non holiday.

Kaabil also looks like heading for 110crrs or so which could have done around 150crrs without clash.
Raees wins the clash but seems to be bigger loser in the overall picture.

RR announced date first so SRK should not have clashed. Or if not for RR’s ego they could have averted as HR career also took hit with MJD. But well.

It will be interesting to see how TZH performs (although Hiranl’s product could be blockbuster or could be big dud as I am still not confident/like the idea of movie on Dutt. Many people are already not happy thinking that Hirani will glorify him)

Is this because of the panga Aamir took with the State and Modi in 2006 vis a vis Narmada Andolan. Raees didn’t open as good in Delhi/Punjab territory as most Shahrukh films tend to but it’s not due to his intolerance remarks but because the setting & premise of the film didn’t excite as much as say a CE or HNY. So it is outright naive to attribute Aamir’s NBA remarks in April 2006 to the comparative underperformance of Dangal or any of his movies!! If that were to be true, PK, Dhoom 3, 3 idiots would not have been able to set all time circuit records in Mumbai territory!!

  76. Many box office myths have been blown away in last couple of months;
    – Dangal laid to bear that Aamir does not need D3/YRF or Hirani to deliver. He can do so even when a competitor tries to steal his thunder
    – form is temporary, class is permanent. Dangal lost screens in W4, yes it was a crap film but follow the week drops. W2 around 40%. W3 around 60%. W4 70% ( competition ). W5 it’s going to drop 40-45%. It recovers a bit. The game changing week is week 2. 30 years ago you needed a film to hold the attention span for many weeks to rack up big totals. 10 years ago a few weeks. Now it’s 2 weeks or possibly 3 weeks. Only Aamir has delivered consistently on this. D3 failed, Ghajini, 3Idiots, PK and Dangal didn’t.
    – holidays, Dangal’s two big holidays fell on Sunday, despite this it still destroyed all records. It still does the odd exceptional thing like W5 Friday > W4 Thursday or W5 Tuesday > W5 Monday. Very rare but such films can do it
    – SRK has proven despite competition a film with big star buzz on lower screens can collect huge. You don’t need holidays, just a strong product
-also that theory that CE lost out due to OUATIM is disproved by Raees and Kaabil. The former proves given whatever screen count you can optimize capacity. The latter proves that if given MORE screen count you just lower your occupancy. Ultimately it’s about how hot your film is or the buzz or the WOM.

In short less is more sometimes. Over exposed or too much can kill the brand. If I were Bollywood I’m 100% sure making 50% less films a year, giving more room in the calendar & working like a dog on scripts (like Aamir, Hirani and co) will make more money overall & produce better content. Churning 300+ films is too many. Holidays should 100% be occupied by those brands/banners who delivered,. It should be meritocracy e.g. Ranbir deserved a big holiday release post YJHD, Ranveer got Xmas post Ram Leela etc. Till Aamir, Salman or SRK fail 2-3 times in a row the calendar won’t shift. I’d also given the fact that Raees has done ridiculous business on just over 3000 screens, start to cap releases in screen count. No need to grow so fast just chasing opening day/weekend records.

One spends months to years to make 1 film and look for 2-3 day holiday windfall is dumb business. Apple, Pharmaceuticals, car manufacturers, technology companies would laugh at this model. No longetivity is built in. It’s a shorters stock market. In that market, all creativity and creative juices are lost.

SRKs insecurities lie in his choice of films.

What couldve been a gritty subject with great execution was I believe ruined by his intereference in an effort to make the film more massy and universally relatable.

The result: a mess. na idhar ki na udhar ki. Its high time he puts his ego in check and puts his trust in directors who know what theyre doing.

  78. Back from Kaabil. If Raees was example of 70’s & 80’s movie era then Kaabil also is from the same era but the difference is Raees reminds of good part of that time whereas Kaabil reminds of the bad part.

The movie starts well albeit slowly and then proceeds to the main crux of the film where the leading lady gets abused. The next 15 mins are the only highlight of the movie. The emotions are genuine and Hrithik’s performance in the police station is exemplary. The stage is set for riveting 2nd half but alas the director has taken leaf from bad commercial films. Even Papa Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang in 80’s was more riveting than this 2016 venture.

The plot is pretty simple and then the revenge is much more predictable and it has loopholes of football stadium sizes. There’s not an iota of suspense, intrigue in the killings done by the lead character. It is so ridiculous but only reason it doesn’t stop being completely laughable is the sincerity of Hrithik who’s giving it all he has(even though its the same expressions from his Papa’s franchise movies). There’s literally a scene where he pretends to be a kid’s father to the school principal and he has to play a parsi guy and he just speaks like Rohit from Koi Mil Gaya.. for him there’s no difference in Parsi guy or mentally challenged kid.

The main flaw of the movie is that in potraying a blind person as normal they ended up making him superman. Firstly its huge task for even a regular person to take revenge against local MLA and his brother and then the hero is blind. He just hops into supermarket with a trolley and goes into each alley personally and select exactly the stuff he needs from the knives, attacking weapons, rope. He’s doing everything as a normal person and even the revenge murders are done so openly without any idea of faking or hiding it. His only way to save himself.. ‘Hey am blind, no one can prove me in court’. It’s basically they just kept blind line for the end but the whole revenge drama is written as normal as for a regular hero. He has no limits.. he calls villains to meet him in the weirdest locations and he’s there waiting in dark hiding under the hoodie.

Performance wise Hrithik is exceptional in few of the scenes but he just appears sincere in the rest of the movie and not really nailed the role. The movie doesn’t demand that kind of acting display to win an award. Yami is alright and hardly makes an impact. Ronit and Rohit roy are bad caricature villains and even the talented Girish Kulkarni(of Dangal Coach fame) is just 1 note actor in this movie. Narendra Jha is alright and is better than the other supporting actors.

Songs are not much except Urvashi’s remix song right after interval.

The only positive of the movie is that its popcorn stuff and very light so it’s an easy watch. Some of the sequences and the foundation of revenge are well done and I think only basis of that scenes and Hrithik’s sincerity will help the movie to reach to a respectable total. Rest, there’s nothing much to like. I’m shocked how any real critic can give this movie 4 stars out of 5. That is just not possible.

Overall movie is below average and hardly makes an impact. Hrithik does make a small impact and movie is recommended only if you like Hrithik. If you don’t like him to an extent, there’s nothing else to watch here. In comparison, it is almost equal or just better than Shivaay. I know that movie had its own takers, so there will be so takers for Kaabil too.

    • For me the problem was the overly simplistic treatment in 2nd half. The man didn’t had to struggle much for his revenge, it all became too easy for him. It should had more substance . The planning and execution of the revenge was banal and doesn’t arise the curiosity and you dont marvel the way it is carried out.

Loopholes? Could you please point out some in Spoilers Alert.

Raees did very well on its second day as it grossed 26 crore nett plus making it the highest collections ever on Republic Day beating the figures of Jai Ho in 2014. More importantly the numbers have come with a clash and it is the highest ever collection that any film has collected on any single day when it has clashed with another major release. The growth from the previous day is 30% which is good as the opening was strong. The two day total for the film is 46.50 crore nett and business is strong all over barring Delhi city and East Punjab. The film is very strong in Mumbai, South and West Bengal. The first two day business of Raees is as follows.

    Friday – 20,25,00,000
    Saturday – 26,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 46,50,00,000 apprx

The business on Friday is most important as this will be the normal level of the film. There will be a drop in business but it all depends how much the fall is and can the film put itself into places to record 20 crore nett plus totals on Saturday and Sunday. This will take the film to a 100 crore nett plus extended weekend which would mean a very good weekend.

  85. Raees’ Day 1 Overseas Box Office Collections | Updated USA & UK
    By Koimoi.com Team -January 27, 2017

Raees taken a brilliant start at the box office. The film currently stands with a collection of 46.72 crores at the domestic box office.

Considering his huge star power and his appeal in the overseas markets, Shah Rukh is all set to work his magic at the overseas box office.

The film has collected 1.08 crores in UK. In USA too the film opened huge with a collection of approx 2.55 crores.

As expected, it has a great start in Gulf where Shah Rukh has a huge fan following. It collected 3.41 crores there.

Australia too showed a decent response with 0.92 crores coming in. The total overseas collections for Raees on its first day was 7.96 crores.

Unlike Fan which started cracking on the first day itself, only to see further decline on the second day, Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees has actually gone further up on Thursday. After bringing in 20.42 crore on Wednesday, the film saw as good as 26.30 crore added to its total, which now stands at 46.72 crore. Of course the big Republic Day holiday has helped its cause tremendously. Still, on the flip side the film already had such high numbers on Wednesday that even if the numbers were to remain stable on the second day, it would still have been a positive sign for it.

Today, the film will see a dip in numbers and that is expected since this is a working day. Still, even a 15 crore number would be good though indications so far are that the hold would be even better, especially since people would come to theaters in big number for evening and night shows the weekend beginning.

Shah Rukh Khan has a lot to cheer about with these collections since he has managed to score so huge despite the presence of Kaabil in over 2000 screens. As a matter of fact on Thursday the Hrithik Roshan starrer scored quite huge and was clearly attracting a huge count of footfalls. Still, this Rahul Dholakia film has not just maintained very good numbers but also got added momentum going for it.

The film is on its way to be a clean Hit and it has to be seen how much further does it go from here.

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources

Today is the most crucial Day 3, Almost like Monday litmus test.

Kaabil has opened to 25% (same as day 1) while Raees has opened to 30% (half of day 1).
This means Kaabil has picked up due to positive WoM.
This also means that Raees also enjoys positive WoM.

Friday – Kaabil is likely to get 7 Cr and Raees 13 Cr

Saturday and Sunday will be bountiful for both the movies. Kaabil will emerge a success now while Raees will be a sure fire HIT.

The shooting for Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar film, 2.0, is on its final leg.

The latest buzz in the industry is that the teaser of 2.0, starring superstar Rajinikanth and Bollywood Khiladi Akshay Kumar, will be released on April 14, which marks the beginning of Tamil New Year. Director Shankar and editor Antony have already started the work on preparing the teaser of one of the most highly anticipated films in the country that is at par with Baahubali: The Conclusion.

The shooting for one of the most expensive sci-fi movies in Asia is on its final leg. The film crew will resume their last schedule in Chennai on January 30 and have plans to wrap up the shoot by March after which the post-production work will begin. Since the film is said to be heavy on special effects, the post-production process is expected to go on for seven months. Usually, films are shot using 2D cameras and converted into 3D in the studios. But, the filmmakers have used 3D cameras for 2.0, which is a first in India. The makers have also planned to facilitate theatres across the country to upgrade themselves to 3D technology.

The film is being made at a whopping budget of more than Rs 350 crore and is simultaneously produced in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The film is a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Enthiran, which is said to be Shankar’s most ambitious project so far.

The film has been making waves ever since it was announced. Enthiran 2.0 also marks the acting debut of Akshay in the south. He is playing an evil and an eccentric scientist in the film. It also stars Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain in important roles. The film, which is bankrolled by Lyca Productions, is slated for a Diwali release this year

  91. Rakesh Roshan threatens to quit filmmaking

Producer-director Rakesh Roshan is very angry. In an exclusive tete-a-tete he has threatened to quit the film industry. Says the hurt and angry filmmaker, “After 50 years in the film industry I find myself deeply isolated and unable to play the games that are being played. My son Hrithik and I are very simple people. We love the cinema. And we are part of it not to make big profits but because we enjoy being a part of the entertainment industry. Unfortunately the kind of politics that goes on here is beyond our understanding or tolerance.”

There is a valid reason for Rakesh Roshan’s ire. Exhibitors across India have failed to give his new film Kaabil the number of theatres they promised. “We were assured the distribution of theatres and screens between the two films this week (Kaabil and Raees) would be equal. The ratio of screens promised was 50: 50. To our shock on the morning of release we discovered that we had been given only 40 percent of the screens.”

The betrayal has broken Rakesh Roshan’s spirits. “I belong to the old school of filmmaking where even official contracts were waved away. Word given to one another was enough. Here, the exhibitors and distributors are going back on their words so brazenly, under what pressures…I don’t know. I am very hurt. If this kind of unethical practices continue I will have to quit filmmaking. I am not equipped to handle back-stabbing on this level.”

He is not willing to play the blame game. “I am not pointing fingers at any other film. But for the sake of the survival of the film business we need to get more professional. I don’t know what kind of pressures made the exhibitors betray Kaabil. But in future if exhibitors continue to succumb to such pressures many of us would have to shut shop. On the other hand if exhibitors and distributors agree to give an equal number of screens to two or more films released on the same day there will be no confusion during release.”

Much hope was raised by the corporatization of the Indian film industry. But Rakesh Roshan says all these hopes were dashed to the ground. “We thought the corporate production houses would take our film industry ahead by ten years. But we’ve actually regressed by twenty years. If we continue to function in this dog-eat-dog way I’ll have to quit. I’ve made films about the underdog hero. Because when I came into the industry I had no one to support me. I struggled my way to filmmaking. Today I feel I am fighting forces that I cannot fight. I don’t understand them.”

Instead of threatening to quite, he should launch his next immediately with Hrithik as hero and himself as director. That would be the movie which would require a guts to clash.

It was like him literally crying and saying…my papa is the best, I love my papa more now etc etc. I have a feeling the wife also let him as a result of this overpowering papa presence!

Cmon hrithik..get out of there at once…be independent..choose some random, casual films..find which way you want to go..soon! Since he is already 42!

The longer the men’s final goes, the more one favours Nadal. Federer will for sure need to be 1-0 or 2-1 up at least. As mentally he could struggle, but 6 months out he’ll roll the dice and have a chance.

JAIPUR: Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was attacked and the sets of his film “Padmavati” at a fort in Jaipur were vandalized by protesters who alleged that the film shows a much-celebrated Rajput queen in poor light.

Mr Bhansali is slapped, beaten and his hair is pulled by members of the Rajput Karni Sena, who stormed the shoot at Jaigarh Fort.

They shouted protests and alleged that the film has love scenes between Queen Padmini and ruler Alauddin Khilji, played by actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

The Karni Sena says Padmini was a proud queen known for taking her own life rather than submit to Alauddin Khilji, the emperor who attacked the Chittorgarh Fort.

Padmini committed “Jauhar” or immolated herself with scores of other women as Alauddin Khilji waited to conquer the fort and claim her.

The Rajput Karni Sena has demanded that Mr Bhansali delete such scenes in the film if any.

These protesters will beat anyways knowing there is no scene and then say..see coz we kicked him he removed scenes to boost their ego and power infront of others.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was slapped and assaulted on Friday by members of Karni Sena who staged an angry protest at Jaigarh fort in Jaipur where Bhansali was shooting for Padmavati. In a video that has gone viral, protestors are seen running amok, damaging cameras and other shooting equipment while raising slogans and spewing abuses in Hindi.
Protesters entered in large numbers and started getting violent before the crew of Padmavati could even blink. The mob soon surrounded Bhansali who was seated in front of a monitor. Even as his team tried to shield him and take him to safety, the mob unleashed its fury on the defenceless director and slapped and assaulted him as can been seen in the video.
The protesters then turned their ire towards the costly film equipment and smashed to the ground almost everything that they could lay their hands on. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.
This is the same body which earlier protested against Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa Akbar. It has raised objections against Padmavati saying that the film incorrectly portrays Rani Padmini.
Thankfully, police was called in who soon escorted Bhansali to safety and arrested the troublemakers. The shooting of the film has been temporarily halted.

    • …and then people wonder why “we” can’t make better films. The level of intolerance is so high that we prefer, first, fairy stories and mythologicals; and second, only OUR AUTHORIZED fairy stories and mythologicals, with barely any patience for anything else. [I say this as someone who was quite irritated at SLB’s Bajirao Mastani, both because of some blatantly communal representations (the worst example was the sequence in Nasir Jung’s tent) and, more subtly, because of de-politicization of women in Baajirao’s household); but certainly the man has to have the right to make the film he wants to make!]

  108. The Vigil Idiot Reviews “Raees”, Another Reminder That SRK Films Are Way Fucking Dumber Than He Is

It’s time for Shah Rukh Khan to admit that his fans deserve much better than all the garbage he’s made us watch recently.

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/sahilrizwan/dumbass-ka-dimaag-tatti-ki-daring?utm_term=.vqaqwQ8Y9#.rkkgLRrDJ

Shah Rukh Khan’s new release stars him “in and as Raees” – his latest attempt at the sort of masala star vehicle that even the other two Khans have moved on from lately. While we’re told that Raees the gangster is daring and smart, his decisions are as bad as the ones taken by the actor bringing him to life.

In the past five years, SRK’s filmography has read Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Dilwale, and Fan. While only a couple of these can be considered Khan-level financial hits, almost all have been panned by critics. Meanwhile, in the same period, Aamir and Salman have delivered the six highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time between them. Salman has actually managed to do it with a few decent reviews too.

Raees was actually meant to release alongside Sultan last year, but was postponed to avoid a clash. It’s a good thing too, because it might have made a painful truth much more obvious – Salman Khan is actually doing smarter and better films than Shah Rukh now (Tauba tauba. *Bathes in holy water to cleanse myself for putting this thought out into the universe).

Anyway, presenting the nonsense that is Raees:

All small centres, single screens, Muslim centres, it is nowhere close…Kaabil should be around 9 crs, Raees around 13 crs…But the WOM of raees is not as bad as Dilwale (infact in massy areas it is very good) and the WOM of kaabil is not as good as BM..So the gap will be there over the weekend and into the next week…Credit where its due, Papa Roshan still has a decent pulse of the audience. It was the crucial third day for both the Republic Day week releases and Raees has managed to stay afloat but just while Kaabil is now struggling in a poor position. It was a working day after a holiday so the drop was always going to come but the hope would have been a lesser drop especially Kaabil. Raaes is looking at business of around 13-13.50 crore nett which is around 50% drop while Kaabil is looking at around 7-7.5 crore nett which is a little more than 50%. The only precedence for this is Agneepath in 2012 which released on Thusday which was the holiday and saw a 50% drop on the next day which was a Friday like it is for Kaabil and Raees but it went up again over the weekend to do well.

Raees should have had a bit higher number which then would have enabled it to add around 40 crore nett over the weekend but that now looks a big ask. Still it has grossed around 60 crore nett over the first three days and with the weekend to come it is in a good position and it will be Monday which will decide if the film becomes a HIT or not. The film had a noticeable drop at mass centres which were very good yesterday due to the national holiday. The holds at multiplexes were better.

Kaabil looks in trouble at the box office as collections are now even lower than day one which itself was weak. The huge jump on Republic Day was a huge surprise as the reports were not suggesting that sort of jump. It did look like what happened with Shivaay which flattered on holidays but came down on other days but you can never be sure but with this Friday collection it has come down to its real level and its an uphill battle from here on. The three day collections of the film are around 31 crore nett which is 50% of Raees and it needs a mini miracle to survive and there are no holidays going forward.

The Sanjay Gupta-directed vengeance drama opened its innings on Wednesday with Rs 10.43 crore but saw a massive rise in occupancy on Thursday, which was a holiday on account of Republic Day. With the film earning Rs 18.67 crore on day two, the film has Rs 29.10 crore in its kitty till now.
While Friday’s business of Kaabil is not expected to be as high as Thursday on account of it being a working day, theatres reported good occupancy in the morning shows. The film will again increase its earnings during the upcoming weekend.

Like SRK claimed in an interview, he does look bloody good in a Pathani suit, but that’s about it, as the kohl laden eyes, the glasses and the extra swagger in his step don’t quite take away from the fact that we are seeing Shahrukh Khan on screen and not Raees. The charisma, the dimpled smiles, the intensity, yes they may salvage parts of the film, but it also makes you wish that he’d played an out and out grey character, rather than a character with grey shades that ends up with a pathetic attempt at whitewashing towards the end.

The rest of the cast do their job extremely well, Nawazuddin Siddiqui putting in yet another brilliant turn as the honest to a fault policeman, who refuses to turn cynical in spite of bearing witness to the rot in the system. Mahira Khan makes a fine debut, and absolutely lights up the screen in spite of an underwritten role. It is however extremely frustrating to see genuine talents like Narendra Jha (who is also in the other big release of the week), Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sheeba Chaddha and Loveleen Mishra wasted in such inconsequential roles with almost nothing to do except stay true to stereotypes.

For the average Shahrukh Khan fan, Raees achieves what it set out to be, a homage to the secular appeal of its star, but for a more discerning viewer, it ends up being so average, it’s almost boring.

  120. There is absolutely no doubt that BOI is pro-SRK. Ra1 is a hit for them. So is MNIK in India. Devdas had an original nett collection of 38cr according to BOI in 2002, now declared as 41cr without inflation by them!! I don’t know how in the world Devdas added 13cr of collections (i.e. over 30% of its original collections) after its run in theatres had ended. And the other night they were comparing Dangal’s night shows collection in the US to Raees’ full opening collections there, just to provide the impression that SRK is killing it in the US market.

Maybe Papa Roshan is inflating the figures of Kaabil but there also is the fact that no one else in the trade is reported as low figures for Kaabil as BOI is reporting for it. Could it be BOI’s bias for SRK or could it be that BOI are the only ones to speak the truth. Indian BO reporting is such a mess that no one seems to know the true answer, really.

I expect Monday to be in the range of 8-9 crore and film can sustain at that level upto second weekend. So it should get to 150-160 , which is a pretty good number considering clash . Film would have done 200+ in case of solo release.

Kaabil is a goner now. Wont do 100 crore. There was only one way for it to surpass Raees, it need to had outstanding word of mouth. An average to good word of mouth doesn’t help much when you are clashing with a big commercial film. It is a content driven film so opening was never on cards even in case of solo release.

          • Raees screwed Raees by choosing clash, in process Raees screwed Kaabil. I agree that Raees had more potential but it’s chosen it’s bed it must lie in it. Psychologically this is a much bigger blow to Roshan’s as they desperately needed a result here, but media narrative will be much more about how SRK>HR. All this for that one day of box office Bonanza. It could be said Kaabil was timid anyway and is only getting to where it is now due to a clash and what extra attention that gives. Kaabil would never have opened big but solo probably would do 10-20% better but Raees much bigger %’s.

Raees opening was up there with most big film opening’s, republic day solo could have been riot. Maybe they believed Roshan’s would back down upon clash, especially considering how fragile Hrithik’s career is right now but Bollywood is full of huge ego’s, so I doubt it would happen.

          • Vijay UK market is dead and very small compared to US,there is no significant increase from many years,it might outgross in UK,but still US difference wld be much bigger for both films,(in favour of dangal) also aus.honestly i don’t see how raees wld do more than 25m$ in overseas.u can see the UK highest grosser is 2.75mpounds(3.45M$),while dangal did 2.5mpounds(3.1M$) in UK.let’s say raees do a record breaking biz of 3mpounds in UK(3.75M$),even then difference in UK collns wld be hardly 3.75-3.1=0.65m$,while if with raees SRK also stretches himself to the fullest and do let’s say even 7m$(though looks very togh),diff in NA collns wld be 5.5m$.so combined diff wld be min.5.5-0.65=4.85m$ in favour of dangal.plus australia for dangal was out of world and that wld add 1m$ more in favour of dangal.i hope u wld have got it now.

I am talking about the clash of Raees vs Kaabil in overseas..kaabil is much done & dusted by monday, other hand Raees will continue in coming weeks, maybe dangal is out of reach but surely BB sultan it will beat those,Dangal was one of those film that it will have have repeats flogging in where as Raees is mostly one time see,so is kaabil..we will see in coming weeks but I still say Raees is very comfortable in overseas but domestic is not much difference any difference.

What SRK’s Raees needs is 10 days of Double digit buisness. Though it is tough. This way it will reach nearer 150 before second weekend. Then weeknd buisness will do rest. Working day (Monday to friday can do Double digit buisness because Single screen and Mass centres are driving this film).

    21+26+13+18+22+10+10+10+10+10 = 150

  125. KAABIL grabs Raees by its collar on Day 3

Kaabil has been closing in on its gap with Raees which released on 60% screens ever since the release. The first day started with a near 10 cr gap and its the third day today and kaabil has already grabbed raees’s throat and has send shivers down the spine of the Raees team. The saturday and sunday numbers are expected to be quite similar for both with kaabil having a clear chance to outdo Raees on either saturday or sunday. Here is the trend

    DAY 1 2 3

    KAABIL 10.43 18.67 9.77

    RAEES 20.42 26.30 13.11

    GAP 9.99 7.63 3.34

It must be noted that kaabil budget is almost 50% of Raees but looking at the positive trend of kaabil over raees, there is a good chance that it will overtake raees in a matter of days.

    Prediction:

#Kaabil weekend expected to cross 60 cr. Wed 10.43 cr, Thu 18.67 cr, Fri 9.77 cr, Sat 11 cr, Sun 15 cr. First week in 85cr+

  126. The news report from Pakistan that two of their TV/film actors Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali would be coming to India shortly to shoot for the new Sridevi starrer Mom was met by disbelief shock and dismay by the film industry.

Just months ago in keeping with the deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan, a blanket ban had been imposed on all Pakistani arises entry into India eventuating in protests against the presence of Fawad Khan in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Mahira Khan in Raees. The objections were waived aside under the assurance that no more Pakistani artistes will be entertained by the entertainment industry in India until relations between the two countries improve.

Now the jubilant reports from Pakistan of two artistes joining the cast and crew of producer Boney Kapoor’s Mom has caused some serious embarrassment in political circles.

Commenting on the development the BJP’s spokesperson Shaina NC said, “First of all, this report has not been confirmed by Mr Boney Kapoor. We do hope it’s not true. Secondly the entry in India of Pakistani artistes is at the moment nearly impossible as no visas are being granted to Pakistanis except for emergencies. In case it is true we would like to gently point out the insensitivity of considering Pakistani artistes for Bollywood at a time when relations between the two countries have hit rock bottom.”

Shaina asks the entire entertainment industry to desist from delving into derived. “Why so we need to get talent from Pakistan when we have so much talent in India? There are so many hopeful aspirants hovering in Bollywood waiting for a chance. Why deprive them of their jobs? I think a producer of Boney Kapoor’s experience and maturity should realize this is not the right time to cast Pakistani artistes.”

Reacting to the reports of the Pakistani artistes being brought in for shooting in India, Boney Kapoor said, “Whatever we shot with the Pakistani artists was before the unofficial ban. There is no question of bringing them into India now. We are shooting the remaining portion of the film in Thailand.”

          • There is also a lot of fuss about manipulation in Kaabil collection. As a result, the trade has been divided into two groups. Our stance on the issue is quite clear that if there will be more than 20% in trade and official figures over the weekend, we will opt for the former. It has been done for films like Mastizaade, Sanam Re etc. However, this does not apply to those films that we have not tracked. Though we are working to make the earlier data more accurate by collaborating with Box Office India. The more about this issue will be explained on Monday.

no difference from papa roshan to boi…both inflating for both films then

        Like

        • The numbers for raees are not inflated…Whoever is saying this has no clue whatsoever. Anyways is there even any alternative number for Raees apart from official numbers? Then whats the debate here? BOIs numbers for SRK movies have usually been lower than official figures. JTHJ was a good 20 crs lower. HNY also in 20 crs lower. CE is around 20 crs lower. BOIs commentary and rating are suspect but their numbers are always within the acceptable range for most movies…infact almost always lower than official…

The issue of Roshans is not the same as for other movies. Roshans invariably have been quoting 30 to 40 percent above actuals. People really don’t have an issue if the collections are +/- 10%…That much in an unstructured BO like India is par for course. But the Roshans are cheats…That’s not the same as other movies variance…

          Like

          • Krish I have a query regarding 1st day collection of HNY cited by producers which was 44.9 Crores, 2 years have passed since then yet no other movie has come close to that No. despite bigger releases in terms of more screens than HNY have been coming regularly?? So how do you explain such massive discrepancy for a single day collection which if compared with BOI No. is almost 8.5 Crores more & that too for a single day!! Is this not cheating?? And most of Shahrukh movies intially also have an inflated total which BOI adjusts after months & years, be it OSO, CE, HNY, RNBDJ & many more!! So it’s not as if Shahrukh is “Doodh ka dhula” but he is like ” Hamam me sab nange” . Difference is of magnitude as Roshans make a mockery of themselves in this game by inflating the No. to an insane level where they are exposed by overdoing it!!

            Like

          • And HNY was pulled up for that….I do remember articles telling about discrepancy…In the end the discrepancy was around 20 crs…Considering the first day was 7 crs higher later obviously they had the sense not to inflate it…Official number was 204 and BOI had it at 180 i think…There was a Tamil and regional version which added to BOIs numbers……After that I think Red chillies have stuck to their numbers and even if it were low like Fan they havent tried to inflate it…

  135. Raees has Good Saturday – Kaabil Grows Well
    Saturday 28 January 2017 23.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Raaes has had a good Saturday with business going to around 16 crore nett while Kaabil is on the lower side at 11 crore nett but has managed to grow well on Saturday at around 45%. It probably needed to grow a bit more at around 50-60% but its still reasonable growth. The film seems to be doing better on the non working days with collections going low on working days. Now it is about Sunday and if it can do a repeat of the Sunday growth it could be in a position to have a chance of holiding over the weekdays. The four day business of the film is 42 crore nett which is low but reasonable considering it started with only 8 crore entt on day one.The film jumped well at multiplexes on Saturday especially in North India.

Raees has put up a good number on Saturday of 16 crore nett and had growth of around 20-25%. It was less than Kaabil bt that is expected as collections were nearly double on Friday. The film has now collected 75.5 crore nett in four days which is a good total with Sunday to come which could push towards the 20 crore nett mark though there is a cricket match which could hit collections on Sunday. Raees is doing good business all over barring Delhi /UP and East Punjab where it is average. It has a healthy lead of 33 crore nett against its rival Kaabil and as yet Kaabil has not started making any inroads in the gap.

So,it is certainly narrowing the gap and is doing better than people were giving it credit for.
In golf parlance, it was 10 shots behind in round one
In second round it is 7 shots behind
Unless, Raees triple bogeys or Kaabil gets a hole in one,it is never going to catch up. But, looks like it will not be a crushing defeat:-)

    • 1st half, good as any films in a decade. The setting, fast moving of the story and this brought back the glory days where audience is given view into lead actor right from the childhood days and develop the story around it. SRK intro was awesome. humor was in right dose and it was a believable setting and story. Me being a Gujarati muslim, I could relate to so many things in the movie that some others might miss.

2nd half, gets very serious and seems like RGV film. The whole movie setting is primarely muslim life/culture (which I think will tank the movie starting monday), it’s a heavy/violent film. The film has a lot of Gujarati word which most will get but some may not.

It’s weird I thought the movie seems like it ended 10 minutes early but on whole the movie could easily be trimmed 10 to 15 minutes and not lose anything. The ending seems abrupt but I got the main point about “Agar main nahi aata to aap mere log ko chod dete kya” (I think it meant for the whole muslim community, not his family).

Film has many great dialogues. “Basti/Maholla bachate bachate, pura saher jala diya” was great.

      Like

      • So you think the muslim culture is dragging it down? But That wasnt the complaint about it so far..

I cant remember it as so violent also..I loved the Anti-booze rally scene..very sharply done. Maybe not a very healthy image, but SRK in slo-mo with that burning bottle in hand was like superb!

        Like

        • There were a lot of old style hero moment in this film.

Yes, I think muslim culture will brig it down after weekend. Nobody is going to say in review that muslim culture is down side of the film. but in a country where 75% of people are non-muslim. I mean the muslim things like muharram, the way it was shown, we have not seen it in big Bollywood films. Think of fight with cutoff goat head, when have we seen that? I think I would be put off by that whole meat market portion if you’re a pure vegetarian, no?

Perhaps I’m not explaining myself clearly but I think the muslim angle will cut into business after weekend. IF it doesn’t than people have truly liked the film. I think people already have otherwise the movie would have started tanking from day 2 since there was another option.

By the way, the clash has hurt both films since both films are decent where if it had came solo, it would have surely added anywhere from 25 to 50 crore to grand total. Papa would not have needed the Roshan calculator than 🙂

          Like

          • Well, imo, half the support Hrithik is getting for this film is of anti-srk, anti-raees momentum..otherwise I don’t think Kaabil will have too many takers. Sometimes clash is a good thing too, in some situations, for some films.

I am not a vegetarian, but the meat market portion was a bit to the extreme.. At the end of the fight SRK goes sprawling down between all that and it was like yuck!!!!!

Kaabil (Hindi) grew well on Saturday as collections improved around 40% from the day before which is good growth but still overall collections remain on the lower side. The film grossed 10.75 crore nett on Saturday taking its four day total to 41.75 crore nett. If the film had grown another 15-20% it would be in a better position as now it has to repeat the sort of growth it had on Saturday on Sunday again. The weekday business will be cruccial for the film and the holds will have to be very strong which may allow it to challenge Raees in the second week The four three day business of Kaabil (Hindi) is as follows..

    Wednesday – 8,00,00,000

Raees had good collections on Saturday as it collected around 15.50 crore nett taling its four day total to a healthy 75 crore nett. The film jumped around 20% from the previous day which had seen a big fall as it came after the big national holiday. Sunday should see a jump although there is the cricket match which may affect the collections. Then it will be down to the crucial Monday and weekday business which will determine whether film can become a hit or not. Raees has beaten the competition of Kaabil as it leads by over 30 crore nett in just four days and that its near impossible for Kaabil to get that back but its still open to question whether Raees will sustain after the weekend. The first four day business of Raees is as follows.

    Wednesday – 20,25,00,000
    Thursday – 26,25,00,000

And desperate times seem to have forced Bigg Boss into desperate measures. From allowing rude and violent contestants (Swami Om and Priyanka Jagga) to stay in the show to arranging a real marriage (Monalisa and Vikrant) inside the house, the makers tried everything in the book (and more) to grab eyeballs. Sadly, they stooped too low in the process and yet, failed to get the much-coveted ratings.

Kaabil is now shying with the Raees figures on a dialy basis with the gap now frighteningly close to just above 2 crores. It must be noted that Raees released on 60% screens while Kaabil got just 40%. The first day started with a near 10 cr gap but has been declining sharply. The word of mouth has clearly gone in favour of Kaabil and it will be interesting to see if Kaabil can eventually outdo Raees in the lifetime.

    • The Case Against the Roshans

Yet another HR release and yet another set of widely discrepant figures about and a fresh crop of allegations and insults hurled at the Roshans.
Till so far,I have bought into the largely prevalent belief here that the Roshans and the dad in particular is feeding false figures without caring much to look at the evidence.
It just struck me that there is indeed a possibility that the truth could be different or somewhere in between.
The main thrust of this vilification of the Roshans is the discrepancy between producer totals and BOI numbers. There are some sites which quote similar numbers as BOI which are possibly related sites or using their numbers.
It is impossible to know the truth since there are no other independent verifiable agencies for box office data.
I am still not convinced that senior Roshan is telling the truth and am best a reluctant convert but I would like to hear from some here who have trade connections what they think or know.
I don’t want to hear that the truth is somewhere in between unless you can tell me if it is closer to BOI or producer totals.

  151. This is from Indicine Q&A section which is related to inflating the collections of movie by the producers:

    Q. Are the makers of Kaabil manipulating the collections because there seems to be a lot of difference in trade and producer figure?

    A. A couple of things here. One, the ‘manipulation’ that we talk about, should not be a comparison between figures released from one source in the trade to the official figures released by the producers. ‘Manipulation’ can happen from both sides. Two, it is impossible for any one apart from the producers to track box office collections. For example, how will anyone know how much a film has collected at a single-screen, which sells paper tickets? So every figure that’s put out is an estimate with upto 10% error margin (could be more sometimes). Also, some producers include collections from Nepal in their figures, the trade source might not include. Producers also include collections from Telugu and Tamil version into their figures, some trade sources don’t.

We are very clear about one thing and that is, there needs to be uniformity. The outrage cannot be selective or for just one film. If we question Kaabil, we have to also question Shivaay, Krrish 3, the first day and lifetime of Happy New Year, the collections of a film like Baby and even the smallest of films.

Inflating box office figures is a sign of weakness and desperation to prove yourself to be bigger than you actually are. The biggest of stars don’t need to inflate. Their box office pull is good enough to see them through to the biggest of numbers. More on this some other time in a separate article.

    • All this talk of Producer’s number includes Tamil/Telugu is pure hogwash. Telugu/Tamil is doing no business and are disaster to the core, forget difference for 2-3 crs per day!

Indicine is just going by Producer’s number for daily Kaabil business. Then they try to support it by this way. Not gonna work.

I think no one’s targeting only Kaabil. Samething happened all over during Krrish 3, Bang Bang and Shivaay. Upto 10% is understandable to an extent but not more than that.

      Like

      • It’s also clear indicine, addatoday etc revised comments on Kaabil post producers totals. Through Wednesday it was poor start and average. But when producers totals came that they support they had to slyly amend comments to reflect a late night surge in collections. They all justified this to get from there tracking 8 CR to final 10+ CR. They are now questioning their own logic of using producer totals. I have a tiny bit more sympathy for trade on this score.

      • HNY first day was by far the biggest hogwash as it “exceeded” all decency & inflated the figure by more than 30% & that too for a single day!! But you would cherrypick Shivaay, Krrish 3, Bang Bang but keep mum on CE’s difference of 20 Crores!! This selective outrage is more harmful as one keeps one’s eyes wide open only when it doesn’t involve one’s favourite which makes the issue fester as positions keep interchanging in this game of manipulation!! Hindi film industry should have an independent tracking system which should be free of any duress or influence, until this happens, such incidents would keep recurring with different names involved!!

Only a 225 odd chase it was epic. Of course the repeat match of 430 odd chases was great too. But bowling will fast become the third discipline in cricket behind fielding. Sure not many ‘great’ bowlers exist, but what’s the incentive? To get hit for 4 instead of 6?

  155. I am responding here to Z’s comment about Raees being affected by ‘Muslim’ cultural practices and so on but also responding to some other things more generally. I’ve argued about this before as well but I find this line of thought extremely troubling. First off I am full aware of how much religious polarization there is in India. I can also understand why a Gujarati Muslim would experience this polarization to a much greater degree. But it’s simply false to attribute this sort of reason to Raees. Why?

1)Let’s look at SRK’s entire history since KANK. The film of his that does well in this entire period is actually the exception to the rule. In any genre. The rule here is that most of his films open well or even great but they all fizzle out. Some trend better than others but the overwhelming majority either fails or underperforms greatly. Irrespective of genre and at every end of the production spectrum. With or without competition, irrespective of release date. I don’t even have to get into the examples. They’re blatantly obvious. Clearly he’s retained his initial as a star but he doesn’t seem to be able to translate this into anything more permanent. but he’s also not at the Salman level of stardom where anything barely half-decent gets to a minimal gross. You combine all of this and he needs really a very good film to get even relatively decent trending. Or else something with a hot director like Shetty and a top actress like Deepika. How many of these films underperformed of failed because of ‘Muslimness’?

2)Z himself admits that the second half is like an RGV film. How many of RGV’s films are great grossers or even strong trenders?

3)You don’t need ‘special’ explanations when there are obvious ones related to the narratives, when there are longer histories and so on. Raees is in keep with what has been par for the course for SRK for more than a decade.

4)I’ll go even further. Even audiences that are polarized by Hindu-Muslim issues or what have you generally tend to leave this sort of stuff behind when they’re watching a movie. If that weren’t the case why would Raees be getting a good initial? Doesn’t the trailer make it rather obvious that he’s a Muslim gangster? The audience saying ‘we’ll tolerate ‘Muslimness’ upto a point and not beyond this’ again is rather hard to believe. That kind of person will simply not show up for such a film. But if such an attitude is so widespread the initial becomes a bit of a mystery!

5)All of this is connected of course to a larger level of ‘fantasy’ involving those who are partisans of SRK one way or the other. All partisans resort to these explanations when it comes to their favorites. There is a huge gap between saying SRK is a big opener still, at least on his day, and that he can get the biggest grossers imaginable. The first part of this statement is self-evident whereas there is no evidence for the second bit. There is currently a gap of 100 crores between SRK’s biggest grosser (CE) and Salman’s biggest. I don’t need to get into the gaps with Aamir’s films. And this has been true at every level since Ghajini. At every point Aamir has been way ahead and then Salman after Dabangg. Is SRK potentially always in a position to get to those totals given some of his openings? yes. But then why doesn’t he? Much as Salman never seems to close the gap with Aamir despite his much greater stardom at the moment relative to SRK. When some here argue that ‘content’ lets SRK down this too is part of the same fantasy. A star is not just his initial but the entire set of his decisions. When enough films disappoint the audience the initial/gross are affected. The WOM doesn’t mean as much. Secondly the ‘content’ argument is a very flimsy one in any case. Most stars at any level would do quite well if the ‘content’ of their films were better! Ranbir had big failures after YJHD because of ‘content’. One could go down the list this way. Whether a star is bigger or smaller than another ‘content’ is always important. Yes stars at their absolute peak can sometimes still do well in nothing films. Salman is at that level. SRK isn’t. Of course SRK was never that kind of star even at his peak. But the gap between the initial and the ‘content’ if you will is structural, not coincidental. I could develop this point more too. The common assumption to all of these fantasies is that SRK is somehow just like Salman or Aamir but he’s choosing the wrong films. He must be incredibly stupid if he’s been choosing the wrong stuff for a dozen years! There are deeper structural reasons for his problems. Could he be in a much better position in terms of his grosses? Sure! But that’s never going to happen except on an exceptional day. the fans surely know this more than anyone else. How many films, big or small, have they waited for thinking ‘hey this is finally the one’?!

6)Z might sincerely believe the religious stuff but I think there’s a simpler explanation possible. As a fan one quite possibly overrates what is an enjoyable enough but not a particularly special film. To then get huge numbers with this kind of film you need to be in Salman’s position. Raees might be way better than Dilwale or HNY or whatever (just the trailer was enough to convince one of this!) but this doesn’t otherwise make it a fantastic film. If one keeps starting with false assumptions one has to keep indulging in fantasies to account for why a certain result doesn’t come about. Notice how BOI keep highlighting ‘SRK’s star power’. There is something called protesting too much! If he were all that they wouldn’t need to say it so many times! Yes he is still an important star, just not the star he once was. And again one can dismiss everything I’m saying here but the history over the last 12 years is plain enough. One can keep making excuses for every release but it adds up eventually. there is a pattern!

the Muslim thing troubles me because there’s simply no need to go that far.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Not sure what this has to do with star power. I think SRK has proved his star power by getting the opening his movies does.

My comment/feeback was simply on muslim angle, it doesn’t matter if it has SRK, salman, Abhi or chunky pandey in it.

In my house, it we’re watching TV and something with pig comes on, we change the channel so my point was on that line that if I’m pure vegetarian, I wouldn’t want to see all that meat and fight sequence with chopped off goat being used as a weapon. And then muharaam and all other scenes.

It was just a thought running thru my mind while watching the movie that I thought there was too much muslimness in the movie.

I keep using desai films examples, in AAA, Rishi was muslim as well as few others but they were just presented as ordinary people with muslim names. In Raees, it’s different or maybe it’s not different but india of today is not what india was in Desai days. And I think that fact made me think that the movie will tank after the initial run. RaOne started tanking from like day 1 cause the movie was very bad. Raees is decent enough where it does keep people engaged and people are liking it somewhat.

      Like

      • Ra One did put up some big numbers in the initial period. Leaving that aside though I agree on the Desai point you’re making. I’ve always found the ‘ghettoization’ problematic in today’s cinema. Desai did it in some ways too but in his films the majority was as ghettoized as the minority. But the real point to be made is that Desai made compelling films. The films today are mostly not as a compelling.

On SRK the problem is ‘star power’ is a rather amorphous term. No one is denying he is a big star. But of what magnitude? If he had as much ‘star power’ as Salman Raees would sail to 200 without a problem. A terrible Barjatya film that flopped got to 200. Most of the Salman films that have done well are pretty terrible too, Raees is probably better than most of them. So SRK actually hasn’t ‘proved’ what you think he has proven. And it’s important precisely in this context. When a producer or a distributor bets on a film he’s of course looking at the opening (this indicates basic safety for a film) but he’s also looking at that final number. His understanding of ‘stardom’ don’t end with the initial when one guy does 300 and another doesn’t even get to 200. If you account for this difference in stardom then whatever total Raees gets to (assuming it doesn’t tank from Mon) will seem good enough whereas if you think that with every big film he’s in a position to get to 250 or more then you’ll need other explanations.

I’ll say this also, I didn’t mention this in the longer comment just now. A star who is as tied to genre as SRK is will always find reinvention difficult. Because his real base likes films that have reached their expiry date in genre terms and with newer films, that might be in different genres but comparable in quality, there are just not as many takers. What this means is that because he has a certain base with the audience he will get his initial but it is much more likely to translate into disappointment than not and even the film that does well will be capped off in certain ways. Barring exceptional days like CE (this is just an ordinary day for Salman). This is true for all stars who are deeply connected to a genre. Salman is more successful than ever before because he was never that deeply connected to genre before this. Started off in love stories but those fizzled out fairly quickly, then he did Dhawan, then some other stuff, he was all over the place and for many years was even off the radar. Had he been as associated with romantic cinema as SRK was he couldn’t have been where he is currently. Now SRK because of his continuing stardom could potentially have the biggest numbers if he had perhaps Aamir-like judgment. But that’s already asking for the highly improbable. How many have Aamir’s judgment? The Salman model is much more common. You’re a huge star, you get the right films but then half-decent stuff (at least by his low standards) also works. Again assuming Raees does 150 or more why is this a problematic gross if one wasn’t expecting more? Yes it could do 200 even with competition. Bajirao did 170-180 with competition. So 200 shouldn’t be too much of an ask. But clearly it seems to be this for SRK. You could keep saying he’s proved his star power and it’s about content or this film or that film and these gaps with the two above him just keep growing wider. Fair enough, anyone below him isn’t even in his position. We’ve just seen how Kaabil has opened. Ranbir barely touched 100 with Johar just recently. But the ‘content’ argument holds for everyone. Clearly ADHM wasn’t YJHD.

On the Muslim angle once more I’m simply not convinced. SRK could have been a Hindu gangster in exactly this film (making all the appropriate changes). Would it have worked more?! I used to have arguments with folks when Raavan was about to release. They were people on the Right who felt that in today’s India messing about with the Ramayana would cost the film. I didn’t buy that before or after release. I liked the film a lot but the reason it didn’t work isn’t exactly a mystery to me and it has nothing to do with Raavan being center-stage. The audience just doesn’t care about this stuff inside a theater.

            – pre release predictions are big
            – person X or Y watches the film. Predicts similar. Likes film.
            – film never gets to target predictions
            – person X or Y not at all ‘shamed’ by predictions. But actually still rejoices! In other words 350 CR for Sultan or BB is same as 300 CR, the level of success is deemed the same even though that level of success is very different.
            – for Dangal, predictions of 150-200 CR plus Lagaan 2 status was perfectly fine.
            – post film, it’s good film, not Lagaan. 270-280 CR max.
            – bang 385 CR.
            – nothing said, absence or petulance arrives
