  2. ha ha – what have we come to:-))) why group ppl like Aamir-fan / SRK-Fan etc? I am a cinema-fan and I like aamir because of body of his work but that doesn’t make me anti-srk or anti-sallu or anti-akki!! I have liked their works also at times – and each one has a choice and opinion – and that is how such blogs exist – if we pick up silly fights then the fun to contribute and read what others put up here goes away….come on guys – be mature – except for abusive language – u can write whatever u want here as far as it does not distract too much from Cinema…..

    • In just 8 days, there is a differential of 20 cr between Kaabil’s producer total (85 cr) and BOI’s (65 cr). Such difference of 20 cr existed for Red Chillies’ CE & HNY for their entire run – not in one week!

Roshans play this game at a different level altogether. And BOI perhaps gives the lowest possible estimates for Kaabil, Bang Bang, Krrish etc. Quite a pair these two make together.

And BOI’s rants are quite funny. Recently they went after DCH for no apparent reason whatsoever. They called it a flop or below average and that it was rejected – blah blah. IF it was not profitable with business of 20 cr or so back in 2001, then it would not have set the trend of making multiplex oriented movies for urban audience. The industry never follows a ‘rejected’ film as a trendsetter.

It’s pro Srk than Raees , clearing saying whatever Raees is doing is because of srk star power . Quiet amusing actually Aamir has given 3 consecutive All Time Grossers but never read a word of appreciation for Aamir from BOI but srk underperformer gets an excuse article that why the movie is not a big hit , srk needs a film with content and numbers would come blah blah ..

      • I think the sole intention of SRK and Roshan’s has been to create the impression in the media that their film are hit films. If you start off with the end state, everything you say or do or present in terms of collections, media interaction unfortunately has to satisfy that end state.

This is pure insecurity at display. Both decided that their film is hit even before the collections are there. Many others do the same for their films. But because of clash they’ve developed a bad unprofessional mentality and really now are fighting at gutter levels. Things can’t stoop much lower.

Highly immature stuff by apparently friends on good terms.

      • With Krrish he has trying to portray it as an ATBB. This time, he is trying to save his face from a complete underperformer. But instead of saving his reputation, all this ‘fixing’ has ruined his reputation. His own distributors are unhappy this time, as they will perhaps lose money.

The next Filmkarft film will be a Krrish sequel. Without a franchise film, he will find it hard to get decent diatribution price for his next – specially when his own trade friends are upset and complaining.

Amidst all this they are throwing ‘success’parties.

Red Chillies has a record of inflating figures (although not at Rakesh Roshan level). The difference between their figures and BOI’s numbers were 20 cr for CE and HYN, 10 cr for Dilwale. And now Raees weekdays surely look inflated by Red Chillies.

That 115 cr figure in 8 days will probably be in 105-110 cr range.

      • KRK tweets would make sense provided he remained impartial, an objective observer with consistency of the past. Lately all the attention seems to have gone to his bloated head as if he is the one who makes and breaks stars. Either Sanjay Gupta requested or Roshans made the effort but like Shivaay-ADHM, one fine day he is on a single track of trashing Raees. I still don’t think people will throw money at this monkey & probably the egomaniac just needs to be pampered and must have assured the makers of Kaabil ‘me me krk will make your movie hit. Don’t worry main raees ki crash kar doonga 🙂 🙂

I have seen both movies and each worse than the other and they are lucky to reach these figs considering how tough it is for rest of the movies to get to even 70-80cr. Without 5-day republic day weekend and even without a clash both would find it tough to reach 100cr. Just weekend biz cannot take movies to safety….. They are ‘bundle movies’ like they use to say in old times and time pass would be an understatement for a movie like Kaabil because the plot holes get on your nerve after a while. Raees is badly edited in trying to reduce duration hence in many scenes it is difficult to justify why the characters did this or that….more like PRDP zone of abrupt edit.

On krk , may be its kjo behind the scene working for Ranbir or Hirani himself who sent sanjay dutt as some sort of emissary for Dutt biopic going by the lunch pic he put with Dutt recently to massage his ego. He is already hyping the movie in case of a anticipated clash with TZH. Salman like Ajay is straightforward and does not entertain such arseholes in the first place and least bothered on box office outcome once the movie hit the theatre. But one good thing is his antics have now become a bit more exposed and after Sultan and Dangal he had to eat shit again with biased twitter storm. Fact is eventually even after all biased applauds ADHM wrapped under 100cr.

          https://www.pinkvilla.com/entertainment/discussion/372026/dark-side-moon-vikram-bhatt-slams-krk-srk

Imagine this if you will. Imagine that you have in your collection a masterpiece by the great Rembrandt. Now imagine that a fool who does not understand art convinces you that it is just a worthless piece of canvas. Now imagine that you listen to this fool and burn the painting down. Can you imagine yourself doing this?
Imagine now that you own a Model T Ford. A fabulous vintage car that a fool convinces you does not drive anymore so you should push it down the cliff. Now imagine you do this. Are you this person?

Imagine a bottle of the oldest wine. Imagine a heritage property. Imagine antiques. Imagine your parents. Imagine your grandparents. Imagine that you are throwing all this away because you feel all this is worthless. Are you this person?
If you are not, read on, for if you are, chances are you may not like this piece.

Last week we in the world of “Bollywood”, how I hate that term, we had two films release. One was Kaabil, with Hrithik Roshan in the lead. Hrithik and I have worked together and though not a very memorable film, he shall remain one of the best human beings I have met in my life. I shall always hold him close to my heart. The second one was Raaes, with Shah Rukh Khan. I have never worked with Shah Rukh and know him only socially, a powerhouse talent though and that is not even something that needs a mention.

Cut away now, as we say in film parlance, to a man by the name of Kamaal R Khan, with whom I have had a tryst in past and while a lot of people are easily scared of him or don’t want to be at the receiving end of his malicious tweets, I for one, have never really cared about malice. Infamy has never really perturbed me. Like fame, it is only temporary, but I digress.

Quite clearly Kaamal R Khan has decided to use all his power to bring Raaes down but it does not end there. To make my case I have no choice but to paste a few of his tweets here.

Why Pak govt allowed to release #Kaabil but not #Raees? Because Pak govt wants people to watch a better film instead Ghisapita masala film.

I agree that SRK was a super star but his attitude and thinking is of Kunal Khemu. This is why he is not a super star today. Purity is must.

If you have watched #Raees and you want ur money back from SRK then RT this. If you liked the film, then like it.

By GOD Ki Kasam SRK’s success party would have come superhit in media if he could have called it #Raees flop party Instead of success party.

After flop result of #Raees, SRK has gone out of 3 Khans league n joined Ajay, Akshay, Ranbir, Hrithik n Ranveer singh. Fair enough!

Last 4 films Of SRK- #HappyNewYear- Flop, #Dilwale- Flop, #Fan- Disaster, #Raees- Flop coz it will do lifetime max 150Cr like Dilwale. If Salman khan is the hero in #Raees then 100% it will do 200+Cr business means definitely SRK is not in the league of 3Khans anymore.

Hey SRK fans if SRK is in league of Ajay-Akshay then #Raees is hit n if he is 3rd Khan then #Raees is super flop. Now decide what tag u want

Hey dear SRK fans, you RT this tweet to accept that now SRK is in the league of Ajay n Akshay not 3 Khans n I will declare #Raees super hit.

I am sure you get an idea from these tweets, what I am about to say, yet do stick with me for a bit more.

A lot of people around me are rolling their eyes as I write this piece. They complain that this is not my problem. Shah Rukh does not need a piece from me and it will make no difference to the great KRK. They are probably right but they are wrong to say that this is not my problem. This is my problem, it very much is my problem and if you don’t get why, scroll up and read again.
My Grandfather sat me down on his lap when I was little and shared with me an insight that never leaves me. He said, “Vikram, there are two kinds of people. One, that seek fame and power with their immense talent and ability. The other, more dangerous kinds, are the ones who want to smear the first kind to seek power and fame.”

I believe, you can be one of the two. A person who gets ahead by getting ahead or a person who wants to get ahead by pulling others behind. The second kind never really stays forever for they can, at best, bask in the reflected glory. The glory of the ones who are ahead. The first kind can easily do without the second but the second kind needs the first, for it needs succesful people to attack. Without anyone to attack they lose their importance.
This man calls himself a critic, but don’t be fooled by that, for he is not. He is a slander machine and gets ahead by that very same slander.

If you should read the tweets and there are many more on his tweet timeline, you will see a pattern emerge. This man called KRK is not reviewing a film, he wants to systematically attack the stardom of Shah Rukh Khan. Not that it makes a difference to Shah Rukh Khan but it does, as I said to me.

I do know that icon making and breaking has been the most primitive past time for most but pause here, for pause we must undertand this, a legend is a legend and we cannot standby when someone is trying so hard to bring one down. For the legend does not care but the legend belongs to us and we must care for our legends, like we would care for all things of great value around us. If we standby and watch this schoolyard bully tarnish our legends for his personal gain then we are the fools who are burning the Rembrandt, throwing the Model T of the cliff and disrespecting all things that only grow in value with every passing day.

Success and failures are not people, they are only incidents. In a fast changing universe, they are daily occurences. Use that for slander and you are just an arrogant fool with a ridiculous level of self importance.

I am proud of my legends be it Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan or the lesser known ones today of the bygone era. They are the greats and they will remain the greats. Should my or rather our legends not see a single succesful film from today, they will still remain legends. Like the other priceless things they get more priceless with each passing day.

I don’t care if no one should stand with me on this. Attack my legends and I will attack you Mr-Self-proclamined-Critic! I will not let you be the primordial barbarian trying to bring my temples down. I shall mud wrestle with you and bury you in that very same mud!

For all those who still don’t agree, please refer to the tweet below. Can you stand by and watch this happen to the greatest of all legends who gave us our freedom?

Whether it’s them or BOI or whoever it’s not the dishonesty that offends me as much as the sheer stupidity with which it is practiced. Let me put it this way, if I were a star and wanted a propaganda machine these guys or BOI wouldn’t make it to my list. I wouldn’t want dumb folks doing the job.

    • If one looks at the final grosses of SRK’s last 3-4 films – Dilwale, Fan, DZ and Raees – he is surely in Akshay’s bracket now? Why place him at Aamir/Salman level?

Akshay delivers 3-4 of such grossers every year.

How can SRK be in Akshay’s league when a flop like Dilwale has made more money than the biggest Akshay hit?

        Like

        • I was not referring to verdicts, just the final grosses being in the same range.

Verdicts can be given based on different parameters and differs from person to person. For example – BOI calls Dilwale a semi-hit movie, you are calling it a flop.

          Like

        • thecooldude Says:

Dilwale made 139. Rowdy Rathode made 131. Dilwale is considered a flop. RR is Akshay’s biggest hit. No ‘verdict’ needed.

          Like

      • that’s going too far.. Akshay rarely crosses 100-120 these days even with very commercial films. not referring to stuff like Rustom (though the problem precisely is that whether it’s Houseful or Rustom he’s more or less in the same range these days). In any case those are considered hits for Akshay no questions asked. Where I do think the fans are foolish is that by calling films like Dilwale or whatever semi hits or hits they actually do the opposite — they reduce SRK’s standing. Then there are all these games about ‘he was only trying to get 100’ or what have you. When the films fail they’re either ‘bad content’ or they’re ‘good content but not for families’. You add it all up and it’s a lot of excuses! Ultimately there’s no running away from reality. HNY if it released today probably wouldn’t cross 150. Because there is a relative decline even in this sense over time. SRK fans have been waiting for the big one for him forever. Irrespective of genre it just never happens. CE was an exception (even this didn’t threaten anyone else’s records). A star in decline can still put up good opening numbers but it is the follow-through that the problems always come up. It’s happened to much greater stars than SRK.

        • One can expect inconsistencies from fans, but its objectionable when a trade site like BOI does the same. They call everything under the sun from RaOne to Don2 to JTHJ or MNIK as clean hits, irrespective of their grosses in India, and then claim SRK is one of the biggest superstars around.

All the two-three members involved in this small little drama are intelligent, respectful members. Yes, they might like one star a little more than the other, but they all make reasonable comments and act in good faith. I engage a lot with Master even if I hold a different view, because I think he is ultimately reasonable. When i don’t argue/engage with someone, it is probably because it is not worth it. We’re on different planes and I rather enjoy their comments for the entertainment and variety they bring to the blog.

The blog has always been more cerebral than other filmy blogs you will find. The result is, yes, you will have more takers and sympathizers for Aamir, Raju Hirani, Mani Ratnam and alternative/sensible cinema as opposed to Salman, Akki and Rohit Shettys of the world. That should change, given both Akki and Salman are now doing good films. Shah Rukh is in the middle. He’s always considered a premium star on any level.

Considering the obvious ideological leaning of the blog, I do think it is vital to have a good enough representation of fans of all kind of stars and films. Not those who indulge in rabid, puerile fan-talk but those who can bring balance when the scales tilt too much in favour of one particular star (in this case Aamir.) It makes the blog entertaining and more alive!

In view of that, there’s no harm if one is a little lenient and gracious towards members of stars who are not adequately represented. I always believe the majority has to look the other way sometimes to make people feel welcome.

The day he stops trying he is going to get back to his flair and real natural self. This is the thing with big stars – they don’t realise they are naturally gifted and even if they just remain their usual self, that is sufficient to cast magic spell on screen. It is the same for Dilip Kumar, Bachchan, SRK, Aamir, Salman all of them. I think complication arise when they start to get conscious of their stardom / success or ( sense of humor in this instance ) and feel they have broken the code of their fame. Later in trying to cling to the same reputation, their insecurities make them chase their own personage. Whereas the truth of the matter is just their inherent natural gift is sufficient to do the job and any more effort then becomes a diversion and comes across as forced.

Also this AIB Podcast is not always hilarious and its more of interview with fun and for that it was very entertaining.

Just some highlights in this thread and you’ll recollect the his 1-liners. This is just from Part 1. Easy for folks to read this who have not seen the video or heard the audio.

  16. So last week’s thread was about SRK bashing.
This week is about salvaging him.

Guys- SRK is a very big star. Aamir needs a Dangal to stay on top, SRK doesn’t. What Aamir has been doing this decade, SRK did it and was ahead of the curve. Am not trying to pull down Aamir. Just giving my perspective.

Raees is a Hit based on its cost. Simple.
When people like KRK try to spin a story and is selectively lauded by few here, smell a rat.
Tomorrow if Aamir makes a film for RS 1 cr and that movie makes 1.5 cr the same brigade with change their stand to cost based Hits.

Till then enjoy Raees. And yes, Kaabil is a success too. Would have loved to see it becoming a hit, but sad it got squeezed in a clash.

    • Excuse me- delivering all time grossers is not the only criteria to be a Topnstar.
Fortunately I was born to see glimpses of Amitabh’s stardom which remains unmatched.
Then saw Sanjay Dutt becoming craze of the nation while I was learning to wear diapers.
Then Aamir Khan was launched in a big way and enjoyed 10 months of extraordinary debut till Maine Pyar Kiya happened for Salman Khan.
Then Deewana came and for a long time since then and till Ghajini, SRK was mostly the top star. From Ghajini Aamir took over from SRK and never looked back. Dabangg happened and since then Salman has mostly given blockbusters (all but one).
Despite all this SRK body of work is so huge that his stardom is extraordinary. Lots of his films are absolute gem. I love him more than Aamir and less than Salman and AKSHAY. All this with very little degree of difference and to the extent that I enjoy all of their movies.
Don’t like bringing down one star to promote another. I am no saint but try to be sane.

I love that you now bring in Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Aamir, Salman, and SRK to the argument. Not sure what ALL THAT has to do with Aamir’s last 8 years to ANY SRK 8 years. Again, SRK was a box office force BUT he never EVER EVER came close to what Aamir is doing right now. Also, his ‘lots of gem films’ have nothing to do with his box office pull. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has given LOTS of great performances lately but would you make him a TOP star right now?

This is not about bringing down any star but please get your facts straight…or at least make an attempt.

  19. Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan says that like any normal person, he too has been in situations where he has lost all hope. But he sees such adversities are god-given opportunities to become an improved person, one who understands life and the world better.

“They (good or bad times) affect me just like they affect anybody else. I become very comfortable with my adversities because of a few philosophies that I believe in. I never take anything too seriously.

“When you face adversity, god is giving you an opportunity to become a better person, a better character, more informed and educated about your life and the world,” Hrithik told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

The 43-year-old, a father of two, says it has taken him almost half his life to realise that he is an adventurer at heart.

“I am an adventurer who can’t end up doing the same things every day. An adventurer explores and goes places where he is afraid of going, and this holds true for me as an actor as well,” he said.

The actor’s struggle to overcome a stammer during his growing-up years, a broken marriage with childhood sweetheart Sussanne Khan and his legal battle with actress Kangana Ranaut — these have been some of the phases in Hrithik’s life which grabbed public and media attention. But his charisma has remained intact for his fans.

This has been proved once again with the success of his latest release “Kaabil”. The film had a box office clash with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Raees”, but it has managed to mint nearly Rs 80 crore in the seven days since its release.

Asked if the film could have done better business if not released with the superstar’s film, Hrithik said what matters is “not the gold”.

“What matters is if you are putting your 100 per cent in the work,” he said, adding: “One important thing I have learnt from this (box office clash), and something I have been teaching my kids, is that the gold is not important; what is important is to run at your best.”

“Kaabil” is a revenge drama involving a visually-challenged couple. Hrithik plays a man whose wife (Yami Gautam) is raped, and he sets out to seek revenge.

The rape scene and the incident’s effect on the victim — who commits suicide — have not been received too well by some.

Defending the film, Hrithik said it’s not negative at all.

“This is the depiction of human reality… Where sometimes in our life, (even) I felt that there is no reason to go on. (You feel) so low and down that you fail to see any prospect of a happy future. Many of us have been through adversities where it seems like ‘This is the end and one can’t go on’. While some of us succumb to it, some of us don’t.

“This is the story of a simple, sweet girl who goes through so much, not once, but twice — and she unfortunately succumbs to it. On the other hand, it is also the story of a man who fights for justice, love, life, truth, and that is the brightness. After something bad, the good happens, and this is what the film is all about.

“Adversity is very important to bring out the victory at the end, just like in life,” said the actor who was also appreciated for his roles in “Bang Bang”, “Krrish”, “Koi Mil Gaya” and “Jodhaa Akbar”.

    So, what next after “Kaabil”?

“Everything is undecided right now. I haven’t signed any film. I liked a few scripts. Will take some time to decide,” he signed off.

  20. I feel the Boxoffice is now defining how we become Fanboys. Its the same thing with Apple/Android, ManIU/Arsenal etc etc. Basically there are 2 things. The Boxoffice of today that you see in comments of site like Indicine, BollyArena etc is all about this new trend about general interest in 100 cr -300cr etc. Look at the youtube videos of the Audience Verdict , every one is giving out comments like Trade Analyst, itna nahi karegi, clash hai and non holiday hai etc etc.

I cannot completely blame the industry wherein the sentiment or mood of a film is based on perception and what is being talked about . I have liked Aamir and then Hrithik consistently. However when i used to like Aamir was due to his underdog scenario of doing films and probably losing the media perception and then Hrithik. Now recently for past few years i have liked SRK, since the perception for me is his being underdog and trying way too hard for his films.

for Salman its on and off. When i see him in Big Boss, thats splendid but when i see him in other interviews and sometimes in movies, i completely shut down on him. Out of all the blockbusters BB and to an extent Sultan is a good body of work for him and he has now realized this, thats why it seems he is now more content focussed. But him getting close to SRK (or rather sRK using Salman) is again casting clouds on the movie.

See for Past 10 years, 2007 + (CDI came in that year). SRK’s perception has become one of shouting top of his lungs in media, over promotion, extra reach and all this for Sub Par films. Thats the biggest dent for him with Neutral Audiences. They see through these tactics now.

As far as this portal, i feel its too Aamir leaning and we need good diversity on members to have punches across the aisle.

But I’d like to add one thing that it’s not about anything personal against Master or any other member but just asking for a fair verdict as abusing or use of foul language should never be tolerated regardless of any situation & the abusive comment by Master was there for a long time but nothing was done, so after a while I purposely retorted in the same colourful language which Munna Sir read in a flash & deleted without warning Master for initiating it! And despite my repeated attempts to make him understand my indignance, he kept treating both comments as equal which riled me up as I was made to feel & look like an offender & being equated for something I was forced to retaliate! Master in his earlier comment had termed An Jo dumb as well which was personal & insulting both yet Munna Sir didn’t intervene at that point! And it was more to do with Master’s brashful & brazen behaviour as he continues to be unalologetic

      Be a man!

I will pause to criticize BOI again. To say the bromance in this film may have inspired some crap but also Hirani’s film like Munnabhai’s and 3 Idiots rely greatly on friendship, bromance & humour of this kind. So I’m unclear on their tirade. Even Kal Ho Na Ho incorporated this between SRK and SAK. RDB has electric elements too. Maybe DCH was slightly ahead of its time when multiplex culture was just on the horizon, but if a similar film released now it would ROAR in the multiplexes. The focus was too heavy on the corporates and Imtiaz Ali’s of the world. He’s a good director anyway.

I have never used abuse as my weapon to win in this game of one upmanship nor will in the future but responding the person in the same language can sometimes become the necessity to drive the point home & my comment in response to Master was exactly in that spirit rather than meaning it literally.
Diversity & inclusiveness are 2 of the key cornerstone to progress & growth & I’m a strong believer of it. SS is testimony to this axiom which has fans of different stars vying to prove the superiority of their favourites to other stars. And that is the beauty of this blog which gives space as much to dissenting voices as much as like-minded fans & I hope it to remain this way by giving this platform to each and every one however contrasting views & opinions they might espouse.

  23. So it’s all done after all! Aamir Khan‘s Dangal has practically broken all possible Bollywood records (barring one or two which pertained to the initial) and has now gone past the Rs. 385 crore mark. The fact that it is still collecting in the sixth week despite Raees and Kaabil playing in theatres is a testimony to the fact that the Aamir Khan starrer is still a choice for the audiences. Meanwhile, what has happened in the process is the gap that has been further widened when it comes to the next big grosser.

    Here is how!

“Before Dangal, the record for the highest grossing film was PK [2014] and that stood for a good two years. That too was an Aamir Khan starrer and had netted Rs. 340.8 crore. Now to think of it, this number couldn’t even be touched by any superstar. Salman Khan came close to it with 2015 release Bajrangi Bhaijaan [Rs. 321 crore] but fell short. Later, even though his Sultan [2016] was magnificent in its initial run, eventually it too ran out of breathing space and closed at Rs. 301.5 crore. So as you can see, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan was close to Rs. 20 crore short, Sultan was almost Rs. 40 crore behind,” says a trade guru.

As for the other superstar Shah Rukh Khan, he is yet to enter the Rs. 300 Crore Club and the maximum distance he has travelled is Rs. 227 crore with Chennai Express. Now even Raees is far away from making it to this club, leave aside the Rs. 300 Crore Club and one still waits to see what ‘The Ring/Rahnuma’ has in the offering.

“Meanwhile, Aamir Khan has raised the stake for the game,” the guru comments, “While the PK record itself was inaccessible, Aamir Khan has outdone himself with Dangal that has gone past the Rs. 385 crore mark. Now what does one do with this competition? Who will really break it? With which film? And by what margin? You need so much at hand in order to achieve such a milestone, be it fantastic content, star power, absolutely perfect release date, at least reasonably good music, a story that connects with the heartland of India as well as the urban centres, fantastic marketing, all available screens to your disposal, the works.”

Since the only man who has come closest to achieve great Box Office numbers so far is Salman Khan, all eyes are on whom to take up this challenge with his two releases in 2017.

“Will it be Tubelight or Tiger Zinda Hai? Well, which other film can we even bet on this year,” wonders an industry insider, “Salman and Kabir Khan have got it right twice over, be it Ek Tha Tiger or Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Latter in particular was a humane tale and this is what helped with a strong audience connect. One hopes that happens with Tubelight even though the only on-screen star here is Salman Khan with a heroine [Zhu Zhu] who is a Chinese. On the other hand Ali Abbas Zafar has given Sultan with Salman and he also has Katrina Kaif lending further star power. Moreover, there is a huge advantage of the sequel factor.”

Not to mention the holiday factor too. While Tubelight releases around the Eid holiday on June 23, and has a two week open period (before Munna Michael arrives on July 7), Tiger Zinda Hai has an even better release period. It hits the screens on December 22 and then has Christmas Day falling on Monday, hence giving it a four day weekend. Moreover, it has an astonishing one month open period with no release planned till January 26 when Sushant Singh Rajput‘s Chandamama Door Ke hits the screens.

“The stage is set for Salman Khan to do the honours,” the insider says, “Otherwise, it would be back to Aamir Khan to unleash something magical all over again on Diwali 2018 with Thugs of Hindostan. A Salman or a Shah Rukh definitely want to score really high by then because Aamir could well have started thinking of the Rs. 500 Crore Club with his Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya a.k.a. Victor and Amitabh Bachchan for Thugs of Hindostan. He is going to miss the Rs. 400 Crore Club by just a whisker with Dangal; he won’t allow that to happen with his historical affair and will go even bigger.”

Well, the ball is in Salman Khan’s court and he now needs to hit it really hard before Aamir comes back into the play!

Later we also brought you images of Shah Rukh Khan on sets of the film posing for the cameras. Well now we hear that SRK will in fact be seen playing the role of a magician in the film.

Though an official confirmation on the same is unavailable, our source informs us that it is a very unique character that Shah Rukh Khan is playing in the film. In fact we got some interesting scoop on SRK’s look in the film. From what we hear, Shah Rukh will be getting a temporary tattoo made on his face for his role of a magician. In fact, a meagre semblance of a tattoo can be seen over the actor’s right eye and on the cheek bone in the photographs that he had posed for earlier.

As for the film, Tubelight that is an Indo – Chinese film is directed by the Bajrangi Bhaijaan director Kabir Khan. Featuring a story set in the backdrop of the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Tubelight also stars Chinese actress Zhu Zhu alongside Salman Khan and is slated for release on June 25, 2017.

  28. I was wondering when will finally a younger actor take over the mantle of top spot from senior actors. Aamir, Salman and SRK have pretty much ruled the BO in separate or overlapping times for over 2 decades. Other actors have come and gone. Some senior actors have been on the peripheral like Akki, Hrithik and Ajay but they haven’t threatened to be at top (not for any reasonable enough time at least). The so called new crop of actors who are doing well enough have been around for a while now but don’t seem to be really threatening the top 2-3 slot anytime soon. Ranbir was a hope but seems to be a hit and miss kind of a guy and I feel he is too urban for masses to connect with him. I don’t find the rest good enough yet. In fact I think most new actors are very urban, hence totally dependent on multiplexes and have limited BO power.

    What do you guys think?

Varun and Siddharth both have promising projects lined up and they both are sincere – so they should be there in top 3. Shahid is down and out and on the way like Jr. B. Arjun Kapoor does not have it in him neither Harshvardhan or anyone else. Sushant is just like Sharman – not a solo hero material although Dhoni worked but that was because of Dhoni.

        • SRK recent movies don’t last beyond Sunday. HNY, Dilwale, Fan and now Raees!!!! Bad content…well may be. But tbh SRK was never a content man (CE had a bad content). The day he became too old and the mushy mushy romance combined with I am such a God that I keep everyone happy even when I am dying or someone I love is dying or someone I love is already engaged and sometimes even married formula became stale, he got exposed. The guy actually hasn’t grown as an actor since 1995. Never re-invented himself. The success and over-media hype he had probably made him feel he is perfect. Infact I think he was a better actor in 90s.
Now lets not compare him with Salman’s acting skills. Salman never relied on acting. But I still think Salman is better actor than he used to be until middle of last decade.

Raees Has Reasonable Extended First Week

Raees was had a reasonable extended nine day first week of 111.75 crore nett but collections have down a lot from Monday onward and that is the problem with the film. The film has not been able to hold after a solid first five days. The film has managed to outpace the competition Kaabil easily but the lead was only by around 1 crore nett on Thursday which will mean the collections of both films will be similar in the second week. That is not really a concern as the film is already 45 crore nett ahead and the race is over but for any film dropping weekday collections is a concern as it means the film has not really worked. The drop in screens in second week is more for Raees than Kaabil with around 30-35% drop for the former and 25% drop for the latter but this is because Raees is coming off a higher number.

The film has done well in Mumbai with collections of of 35 crore nett in nine days. Actually the clash was all about Mumbai circuit as both films were always likely to be best in Mumbai as Raees is a Gujarat based film and Kaabil is a crime drama which have a market in Mumbai mainly and the lead is very comfortable for Raees with 35 crore against the 20 crore of Kaabil over nine days. The other circuits where it fared better were Nizam / Andhra, Mysore, TNK and West Bengal and here Shahrukh Khan films tend to do better anyway. The film has already nearly beaten the Dilwale number of Mumbai which was 37 crore nett as that film suffered due to the intolerance remarks in Gujarat and a strong Bajirao Mastani in Maharashtra.

The second week is going to be tough for Raees and its looking at a finish of around 130 crore nett or maybe little higher depending on where the second Friday lands.

    • 130Cr nett will be a huge letdown for SRK now after solid first 5 days. It is as if two different movies released – one till Sunday and i thought 150cr is set and other from Monday which is now being predicted to close by 130 cr.

SRK on a downwards slide now. Media narrative doesn’t takes time to change as well. He has a big fan support base which will keep him relevant for more time than usual.

    • Great!! If not for SRK’s star power movie would have done 25 cr nett or so. That is the greatness of SRK. He takes subjects that are sure shot failures, produces them, spends good 2 years on them (knowing fully he doesn’t have enough years) and pulls those movies over the line by his raw star power. Absolute Genius!!

There is always lip service before a boxing match, stuff like I am the best / I’m gonna woop your arse etc…The loser either whines, accepts defeat or demands a rematch. The winner matches onto bigger and better things or gives the loser a rematch, usually to give him another beating.

  33. Will Akshay Kumar equal Shah Rukh Khan’s record with Jolly LLB 2?

Akshay Kumar is gearing up for his first release of 2017, Jolly LLB 2. The actor who recently completed 26 years in the film industry has 6 films in the coveted Rs. 100 crore club with Rustom being the last entrant.

As his next film, Jolly LLB 2 is just a week away from its release, the trade has already started the prediction game with most betting it to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest hit till date surpassing Rowdy Rathore (134 crore).

The two theatrical trailers have received a good response from the audiences and the movie is expected to record a very good start at the ticket window on 10 February 2017. If the satire manages to live onto the hype, it would become the 7th Akshay Kumar film to do over Rs. 100 crore at the Box-Office thereby equalling Shah Rukh Khan’s record.

SRK too has seven films in the coveted club with Raees being the latest entrant.

HERE’S A LOOK AT ACTORS WITH MAXIMUM 100 CRORE FILMS:

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is a satirical take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s project Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The project aims at cleaning the streets and roads and the film will portray the loopholes of how it has been taken.

The film stars Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. Now, for the role of Akshay’s girlfriend, the filmmaker Shree Narayan Singh has roped in Wajah Tum Ho actor Sana Khaan.

Shree Narayan Singh, who is directing the film, confirmed the news, according to TOI, “It’s a cameo extremely crucial to the plot. Sana shot her portions recently during a schedule. She will be seen in a completely desi avatar in the film”.

Khan will be seen as Kumar’s girlfriend in the film which also stars Bhumi Pedneka

A source close to the film production told a leading daily, “It’s a cameo extremely crucial to the plot. Sana shot her portions recently during a schedule. She will be seen in a completely desi avatar in the film.”

Dangal is now comfortably past 385 cr in India and over 30M (200 cr) in overseas. If they have second phase release, then the overseas number will go further.

No film is likely to get such numbers till Thugs of Hindostan, which will likely be the first 400 cr movie.

Btw, there are reports that Aamir will start shooting for Rakesh Sharma biopic after Thugs of Hindostan. What do you guyz think about that one?

      • I am surprised that there is no buzz here about the possibility of a Rakesh Sharma biopic. If they can get the special effects right, then this might turn out to be a rare space odyssey in Bollywood. And this is supposedly a Aamir production, so the dramatization and screenplay can be expected to be good.

The bench asked the High Court to hear the matter on Monday – February 6 – allowing film producer Fox Star Studios to come before it on Tuesday – February 7.

The film is set for release on February 10.

“We are keeping it pending,” the bench told senior counsel Kapil Sibal as he said that the film was cleared for release by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and under law the screening of the film before the panel comprising two lawyers and a doctor could not be done.

“Go and tell this to the High Court,” Justice Gogoi told Sibal. “We will not say anything. We will keep it pending. Go to the High Court.”

As Sibal urged the bench to see the film, Justice Gogoi said, “We will not see the film. We will tell you why we will not see the film. We don’t have three hours’ patience. Don’t you think that three hours is too long.”

The Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court set up the committee to see the film after a Nanded lawyer, Ajaykumar Waghmare, told the court that the film was an attempt to portray the country’s legal profession and the judicial system in a poor light.

It is “an attempt to portray the Indian legal profession and judicial system as a laughing stock to society at large”, Waghmare told the High Court.

The High Court directed for the review of the film by the panel on February 1 and set the next hearing on February 3.

I’ve Been A Star Long Enough. Dignity Is More Important Than Hashtags.’The Badshah of Bollywood on how he cherishes his father’s reading of poetry, his stardom, art, et al in an interesting conversation…PRACHI PINGLAY-PLUMBER INTERVIEWS SHAH RUKH KHAN

‘Woh aaye ghar mein hamare, khuda ki kudrat hai/Kabhi hum unko kabhi apne ghar ko dekhte hain….’ If Shahrukh Khan were to ever drop in at someone’s house, this might be the perfect couplet to describe that moment. But it’s he, the Badshah of Bollywood, who has a backstory for this Ghalib gem. Nothing around him—the feverish promotional melee, hopping from one vanity van to the other to meet co-actors, producers et al, delayed lunches, the disarmingly innocent AbRam who demands his dad’s time over “boring interviews”—is conducive to ruminating about poetry. But SRK shares an anecdote about how this couplet was inspired by a kleptomaniac friend of Ghalib’s and then goes on to the symbolic importance of the ‘saaqi’ figure in shayari. He cherishes his father’s reading of poetry, his words of explanation, and promises that none of the chaos will distract him from the conversation at hand, and it would be an interesting one too. Not vainly spoken, as Prachi Pinglay-Plumber discovers. Excerpts:

You’ve done different things from very early on in your career—playing the bad guy, or the vulnerable romantic, when others were being action heroes; IPL; making the first successful sports film on real events. What prompts you to make these risky decisions?
I think all of us, whatever business we are in, we are all a beat off. Unfortunately, what happens is when you start getting into a system, you start getting on beat and start following the beat…which is also alright because you have enough talent to pull that off too sometimes. But I’ve been fortunate enough—by nature, not by design. I’ve always been far removed from how films work, because I came from outside. I go by a different connotation. No one told me how one is supposed to behave within the film industry. Very often, more decisions of mine still remain off beat than on. Sometimes I adhere to it. I say okay, let’s just do it. But I do it with the same aplomb and happiness. To me it doesn’t seem like a risk.
When I started out, I didn’t know how to be a movie star—there was no uniformity given to me, that you are supposed to behave like this, talk like this, go for those parties, have a manager. Or that we’d like you to go in the action category, so you should dress like this, show your muscles…. I think I was so unwise that I did those films! I wouldn’t have done them if I was wiser or on beat. But those unwise things worked. People tend to think they all worked but that’s not true—Asoka didn’t work, Paheli didn’t work, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani didn’t work, and it killed me emotionally. Offbeatness does mess up also but when you get it right, you kind of become unique. I still don’t think of it as a risk.

I remember while making Ra.One, my whole team was skeptical. It was the most expensive film at the time. The sampling and research people came and told me the audience for sci-fi movies is 0.1 or 0.001 per cent, where action films have 23 per cent, romantic films have 16 per cent! In 10 categories, it was the tenth, they said…everyone told me this, you know? But I said, if I don’t, who will?

“Often, my decisions still remain more off beat than on. Sometimes I adhere to it. I say okay, let’s just do it. But I do it with the same aplomb and happiness.”
On IPL, for three years everybody kicked me for it, even Outlook. People said I don’t know how to run cricket or business, but I got it right. We won it twice. Recently we were named the most consistent brand. I didn’t tweet it. I don’t want to harp on it or gloat. I don’t adhere to that old maxim: there’s nothing like being ‘ahead of your time’—there’s your time or not your time. Maybe you haven’t got it right. Maybe you need to work harder.
You seem to be returning to darker roles with Fan, Raees? Javed Akhtar once said sketching out villains was particularly fun because they exude a certain freedom. Do you find them more interesting than the good guys?
I come from theatre…Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard, these are the characters you remember. You won’t remember most of the sweet characters: they are nice, that’s about it. You remember Romeo and Juliet because of the dark end—poison le liya, nakli tha, khud ko maar diya, uth gayi, yeh kya ho gaya, oh my God! (speaks feverishly), a comedy of errors but so creepy, scary. You remember those things. The thunderclouds, the rain, the lightning are always more attractive than the daffodils and sunshine. Something as simple as Humpty Dumpty is more fun because they could not put them back together.
Within the parameters of commercial cinema, I don’t think I have done all that yet. It requires a certain amount of obsessive passion to be that person. It requires the same passion to be Raj and Rahul too. To be devta-like or dariNDA-like requires sacrifice…. I can understand the obsession in both places, I get attracted to it. I can play a Devdas, who’s completely obsessive and weird, but I get it. I don’t need to be like them but I get that space.
Raees is more real. Journalists have researched how bootlegging is done in Gujarat and elsewhere. It’s not like Happy New Year… upar se aaya, gutter ke raaste nikla, andar chala gaya. Some of these moments, the modality of selling illegal liquor etc., they’re very interesting because it’s actually happened somewhere. For example, they would sell it at vegetable stores, it was injected in tomatoes. Men started telling wives they would buy the vegetables, the women were happy, it was so wonderfully in the public space that nobody knew about it! There are lots of moments like this in the film. Small, reality-based things…where I hide the money, the booze. It’s very intriguing for me, I’m not from that world, neither are most of us. Normally I play urban characters. This was kind of rural, small town. Not completely rustic like Chahat or Paheli. The real space attracted me.
Dear Zindagi, in which you played a psychologist, highlighted the need for emotional support. Do you think it has become more acceptable? How do you cope with your upheavals?
Each one to his own, yaar. I’m inexpressive, closeted, cloistered, very awkward sharing even with the closest of my people. There were times, for not being able to talk to anyone, I’d talk to my pet dog…because I had it somewhere on my mind that she won’t understand, so it’s alright. I talk to my little kids knowing they won’t get most of it. That too, maybe once in four years! I’m not at all someone who can do it. I get awkward even if you ask me to my face if something has made me sad. I don’t want to share it. But I know friends, actors and actresses, who sometimes call me and talk to me. “Shah, I want to talk to you yaar.” I’m happy talking to them. I’m a good person to talk to because I don’t judge you. Maybe that’s why I don’t talk, because I’m worried people will judge me. If you came to me and told me something radically weird, I’m okay with it. Whatever is taboo. I don’t discuss it with anyone. I’m very private about your privacy. Nothing can shock me. If you told me you were an alien, it’s alright. I don’t have to tell four people about it.
In DZ, Gauri Shinde, Alia Bhatt, Kausar Munir…I don’t think they were propagating going to a counsellor or not—just that there is a need in every man and woman’s life to have someone to talk to. I believed in it because you (the audience) believed in it. I don’t need to believe in everything, just to make you believe. I believe you! So this could be true. If you need someone to talk with, Dr Jehangir Khan can be that. Personally it doesn’t work for me, but I know it works for others, a lot of people I know go to counsellors. It’s a good thing if it helps. Whatever helps you get over depression.
    Advertisement opens in new window

How do you deal with it?
I just do it alone. I vent it out in films. I have no idea. I leave a part of me in a film. I could be doing a comedy right now and feeling extremely depressed but I leave a part of me there. I just overwork myself out of depression.

    Dear Zindagi
Karan Johar’s autobiography is out. Naseeruddin Shah also wrote his. When do we see yours?
“Except for four or five films, I’ve not done films where the girl is not playing the prime role. I believe it makes the story more interesting. It makes life more interesting.”
Mine is written—Twenty Years of a Decade. Bhatt saab had convinced me to write it. I finished it, but such beautiful things keep happening so I have to keep writing! It’s a very funny autobiography…I mean I like to think so. I write when I’m sad and I write quite funny. It’s very therapeutic, but I haven’t been sad for years (laughs…) which is a good thing. Let’s see. The deal with my publisher was, you will not tell me when to publish it. I’ll keep writing and add lots of chapters. I edit myself. I want to finish it. It had finished at Aryan’s birth. Then Suhana came, then AbRam…so I have to add a few chapters.
You have been vocal about women’s rights. How do you ensure, as a parent, that prejudices, stereotypes don’t creep into your upbringing of a son and a daughter?
However much I want to avoid the fact that I’m a movie star, part of it does come back. My wife and me come from a simple background. At home, am completely untouched, I don’t bring back any part of this world, which is larger than life. My kids see me on hoardings or read that I got the Chubbs fellowship, but when they’re sitting at home with me, I’m a basic, sensitive guy. I don’t shout, I don’t misbehave. I do nothing that can ever be taken as trappings of a stereotype—like ‘my father does this, so it’s okay for a guy to do this’. No impression is formed in my house. Except they sense that I work hard. I’ve never spoken to my wife in a way that can be questioned…I’ve known her for 33 years. Or the way I speak to the people who work at home, actresses and others who work with me. Even with AbRam…he’s very young, if he says something I just put in a little word, like I did tell him just now to come and be nice to you girls.
My children have grown to be extra sensitive, sometimes they’ve even questioned my actions—an outburst or a little anger with a journalist or someone. They say, “you only tell us this, na…leave it, na”. So there’s a certain maturity. Maybe they realise I exist in a fragile world so they need to be stronger and keep everything together and it’s happened very naturally. I haven’t seen my son or daughter saying anything wrong and I’m very proud of them for that.
A lot is said about strong women characters in your films, the message that gives. You really seem to like that….
“Meryl Streep can say what she has to or wants to. Even Trump can. If you don’t have the platform, you can’t ask why that speech doesn’t happen here.”
Except for four or five films maybe, I’ve not done films where the girl is not playing the prime role. I remember this very famous filmmaker said to me, why would you do this film (referring to DDLJ), the film belongs to Kajol. Or even Paheli, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In Chennai Express, the woman is so strong and the guy is such a lallu. I get attracted to films like that. I really believe it makes the story more interesting. It makes life more interesting if you have stronger roles for women in real life too. It just does. There is more girth, more rotundity. Even when a lady politician talks, it’s somehow better. My life’s highest fantasy is that I’m sitting in an open car, pardon me but with a cigarette, laid-back, and a lady is driving…not from a service point of view, don’t get me wrong. But a lady is in the driver’s seat. When I was in LA for the Oscars for Paheli, a limousine pulled up and I think Matt Damon came out and the chauffeur was this lady. Amazing high. My next film with Imtiaz, it has a wonderful role for Anushka. And I’m not being patronising. Even Don for that matter; Roma is a stunning character—we couldn’t even kill her in the end, ‘nahin maarte yaar, isko rehne dete hain yaar, wapas layenge’—all the girls are so strong in Don, even the molls, Lara…even in Raees, the mother, the wife played by Mahira.

Hark back to Aziz Mirza’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani…rather prophetic in retrospect. How do you perceive the media today? Has it gone out of control?
A little out of control, yes. There’s nascent stardom. The media has its competitors in people now. Suddenly so many people have points of views online. Earlier you were the only guys who brought news, now everyone has an opinion. So stardom has become very important in media. Instead of sticking to your ground of being well-informed and analytical, there’s a rush…of half-hearted, hashtagged information. The other day, a lady was saying on a channel, ‘this is my hashtag’. I felt like, you made the hashtag lady, so what? They might feel, you can’t beat them so join them—but no, you don’t need to join them. I can form my opinion without yours bearing in on me. I fully respect the issues you have, I simply do not speak about it or not speak in a tone I don’t believe in, just because you need more voices.
From time immemorial, when stories were written, editors said, ‘listen, let’s humanise it, let’s put a face there’, like the National Geographic girl with light eyes. Anything that’s humanised is attractive, identifiable. Now presenters feel they are (those) human beings. But you just have to present, you can’t force your opinion down my throat. Sensationalism is wrong, this is not even that. And the trolls are so hyper. Such wonderful journalists I know, one can respect them despite contrary views. If Salma Sultan would meet me for tea and gave me news, I’ll still take it! But it will become okay. It will curve eventually.
I also hear, ‘why can’t the star say so, why can’t you’…. But you have to create an atmosphere for me to speak and I have to create an atmosphere too. We all are media, we need to do it together. We can’t be on different pitches and have the same song. It won’t be the same song.
Without going into the details, do you think controversies—like on Ae Dil Hai Muskhil, My Name is Khan et al—change the larger narrative in society, making people more cautious?
I don’t think it will change the society. As an entertainer, I know my responsibility. You could be a serious-minded person and think a guy who does Chammak Challo can’t ever be taken seriously, but having been 25 years at this job I owe three things to people. One, to make a good film. The second part is through you—this interview is not just to market myself or my film—through you I want tell people that this is one commodity where money won’t be returned if you don’t like it—the only good/service in the world that has no moneyback guarantee. Everything else, clothes, food, you can send it back. I need to inform them, so I’m guilt-free. Third, I owe it to my audience that they go and like a film, just the way I’d like to go and watch a film with ease, pleasure, comfort, relaxation. You don’t go for entertainment with stress.

    Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
I used to get very disturbed with all these small issues. (‘Why is this happening, yaar!’) Very few of us would make a film to incite violence or hurt your sensibilities. Just now the censor board said, ‘cut this line’. I hadn’t realised it could hurt someone. And it’s alright, I can change it. It’s no big deal, I’m okay. It’s a commercial film, how seriously can you take it? The word is not cautious, it’s ‘a little more careful’. What I’m selling as entertainment may not be so entertaining to someone.
It happened to me a few years ago, when I met a set of hair stylists who felt ‘barber’ was a derogatory word. I was really vehement. I said I won’t change it; ‘barber’ is a degree in Australia…. Then they sat next to me and watched the film. It was derogatory to their mind. I met 45 of them from all over India. “Shahrukh bhaiya aisa bolte hai, chidaate hai” (they tease us). So I removed the word. It would still be the same movie about a hairstylist. I’m sorry, I can’t explain to them that barber wasn’t meant in a derogatory way. I don’t know their backstory. I’m a little more careful now.
See, my job doesn’t end at making the film. It ends with getting the mother, daughter, father, brother, girlfriend, boyfriend coming and seeing it. I read these things and I tell my team, ‘can we just control it because it goes out of hand’…. I’m not taking a stand because I can’t. I don’t like to clarify or write blogs on the subject. If it’s hurting people, let’s bypass it. Let’s do it easily. I’m not bowing down to anyone. That’s what people may feel but I’m not giving in to fear. This is just part of my job now, the world has changed. There’s a whole populist belief about what can work and cannot work and you have to adhere to it to get your job done, and my job is to touch your life for 2.5 hours. For that I need to do a few things and I will do them. I don’t think there’s any lack of dignity of labour in it or any lack of dignity.
Maybe 7-8 years ago I could come on a high horse and say ‘but I’m just a filmmaker’—but no, I’m a filmmaker of responsibility. Parents meet me and say I want my son to be like you. I get such unconditional love and I got to look after that. Yes I’m a little more careful, little more aware, little more patient. And a little more easy, rather than getting all worked up.

    Don
What did you make of the powerful speech by Meryl Streep or even Leonardo DiCaprio about climate change, that platform, the impact it had….
I think it’s an amazing platform, but platforms are made by people—in this case, the foreign press. You need to present my view as it is, not as part of the agenda of your write-up. You can ask me, ‘Shahrukh, I believe in this, do you?’ I say no. You can even present your point of view, which disagrees with mine. But let’s be fair, honest, let’s be brave enough. It’s alright if you say I don’t want your interview because you’re not going with the agenda of my story, which is okay. But you can’t take what I say and make it part of your agenda. That’s what’s not fair at all. Keep it in the context. Journalists cannot have an agenda unless it’s an editorial. I have an agenda to sell my film and blatantly so—so I come and dance on the Kapil Sharma show. It’s not downgrading or upgrading in any way. It’s my job.
When I have a platform like that…. With all due respect to what’s happening there, or not happening, whatever we think of it…there’s an advancement in media there, which we haven’t got. Like they are much more advanced in films—technologically. And no, we are wrong in saying our films are better. If we were, we’d be making world-class cinema. We do need to learn from better things. Because of having passed these stages of stardom and having that platform, Meryl Streep can say what she has to or wants to. She or anyone else knows they can. Even Trump can. If you don’t have the platform, you can’t ask why that speech doesn’t happen here.
Here, things are at a very nascent stage. Even I used to be jumpy. I’ve said things like ‘awards which don’t give me awards don’t deserve me’. Now I think there are many years to come, I still have my talent, craft. Let me assume you’re right and I’m not good enough. But I can be. I will be. It’s about how dignified you are. Long back I remember visiting Mr Amitabh Bachchan at his ABCL office. People were screaming ‘Shahrukh, Shahrukh!’ and I felt…yes, I’ve arrived! Banging on my car and shouting. But when he started driving his car, they just parted way for him. It struck me then. They give you that space when you’re a true star. Not asking people ‘do you love me’ and getting them to shout ‘yes’. People will say that on their own. I used to do that, now I don’t. Dignity is far more important than provocative hashtags, alliterations. I’ve been a star long enough, I don’t want to be louder, we can agree to disagree.

  40. The Dial Of The Sun King
In the Bolly-games of Khandom, Raees could be Shahrukh’s next big chance. What if it fails to come good?GIRIDHAR JHATHE

“Apna time shuru,” says the Raees poster, in a street-savvy, oracular tone. But the real arbiter these days is the weekend box-office collections, and it’s a destiny being written as you read this. So the question is open for the time-being: will this much-awaited gangsta flick renew his lease on the throne, or will it mark the beginning of the end of his prolonged reign at the top? Ever since he hit a purple patch early in his career—with Darr (1993), Baazigar (1993) and, above all, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)—there has been no looking back for the 51-year-old Shahrukh Khan. But as Raees, directed by the National Award-winning filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, hits the screen worldwide this week, there’s a real tinge of nervousness.

And with good reason. There are two sensitive points on the graph on which comparisons will be made. One, SRK’s recent films have not done business befitting his stature. Last year, Dear Zindagi (Rs 68 crore) and Fan (Rs 85 crore) failed to make it to the coveted Rs 100-crore club. And two, the phenomenal success of Salman Khan’s Sultan and Aamir Khan’s Dangal means King Khan is expected to match up and deliver a Rs 300-crore blockbuster. Tellingly enough, for SRK, ‘Rs 300 crore’ is a peak that remains unconquered. And now, he has to aim for it against the current, with another A-lister from B-town, Hrithik Roshan, poised to split the votes with his home production Kaabil, releasing the same day.
That’s why Bollywood is keeping its fingers crossed, waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the film where it matters the most: the cash counters. Expectations are always spectacularly high from a new SRK film anyway. But never in recent years has any movie of his generated as much interest about its fate as Raees. The film comes with favourable pre-release reports, but what if it falls short of the mark?

“It’s extremely important for a big star to deliver hit movies consistently. In Shahrukh’s case, this has not been the case in recent times,” noted film trade analyst Komal Nahta tells Outlook. “He has to deliver a film that becomes a hit big enough to keep everybody associated with it happy—even the distributors and exhibitors, not merely the producers.” Nahta says ’s box-office showing is all the more important because both Salman and Aamir have had two films each that earned over Rs 300 crore in the past couple of years. “Dangal is, in fact, getting closer to the Rs 400-crore mark now.”
Shahrukh’s trajectory has followed a different tangent of late. Dear Zindagi and Fan were both touted as experimental projects, devoid of the trademark SRK tropes, but their modest haul dented his reputation. And it became tough to rationalise against the runaway hits of the other two Khans. Dangal, released around Christmas, continues to have a roaring run, inching its way to the Rs 400-crore mark in the domestic circuit to emerge as the highest-ever grosser in the history of tinsel town.

Nor was Sultan an exception in Salman’s oeuvre. It only underlined his undisputed box-office heft in the wake of Bajrangi Bhaijan (Rs 320.34 crore). Aamir’s PK, too, had done Rs 339.5 crore. In contrast, no SRK film has crossed the Rs 250-crore barrier yet, his Chennai Express (2013) being his best with a net collection of Rs 226.7 crore.
Never in recent years has any SRK movie generated as much interest about its fate as Raees, which comes in the wake of the huge success of Sultan and Dangal.
Could this be ‘his time’ finally? Tough to call, because the simultaneous release of any two star-driven movies inevitably divides the collections and harms the commercial prospects of both. “The clash between Raees and Kaabil is interesting,” says Nahta. “Both Shahrukh and Hrithik are looking for a big hit after failures. Hrithik’s Mohenjo Daro (2016) may have bombed, but Kaabil has got good pre-release reports.”
Film writer Rajiv Vijayakar thinks they would have done well to avert a direct faceoff. “It’s not only about SRK and Hrithik either. Kaabil director Sanjay Gupta’s last two movies have been flops too, while Dholakia is yet to deliver a commercially successful film.” But he feels hits or flops won’t matter much for a star of SRK’s luminance. “If Shahrukh needs a hit at the moment after Fan and Dilwale, he needs it for nobody else but himself,” he says. “He’s among the top six stars whose stature is not going to be affected by hits and flops. Had failure affected them, Ajay Devgn’s career would have been finished by now. A hit is always good for any star, including Shahrukh. All he needs to do is select his films carefully.”
    Advertisement opens in new window

It’s also not fair to read the success of Raees against Dangal and Sultan, Vijayakar feels. “During Amitabh Bachchan’s era, so many other heroes, from Dharmendra and Sanjiv Kumar to Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor, coexisted without affecting each other’s box-office standing.” Many in the industry think Raees, Shahrukh’s first hardcore commercial film since Dilwale (2015), is his best bet for that elusive Rs 300-crore mark.
Shahrukh, along with Aamir and Salman, has been part of the triptych that has ruled Bollywood in the post-Bachchan era. And it was Shahrukh who took the lead with hits like DDLJ, Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Devdas (2002), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) and many more. It’s only in the past five years or so that the King’s throne appeared to wobble because of the indifferent performance of movies such as Ra.One, Happy New Year and Dilwale. Last year, even Akshay Kumar delivered Rs 100-crore hits (Airlift/Rs 129 crore, Rustom/Rs 127.42 crore and Houseful 3/Rs 107.7 crore) in quick succession. But SRK didn’t touch even that mark—the low threshold of success for any movie starring a big star these days.

It was actually Aamir who started the Rs 100-crore trend with Ghajini in 2008. Since then, he has scored 200-plus four times—besides Dangal and PK, his Dhoom 3 (2013) and 3 Idiots (2009) collected Rs 280.25 crore and Rs 202 crore respectively. Salman had Kick (Rs 233 crore in 2012) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Rs 207.4 crore, 2016) before Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan in the elite double century club. And his Ek Tha Tiger (Rs 198 crore) fell short by only Rs 2 crore.
Salman, in fact, emerges as the most dependable hit-maker among the trio. He has as many as 10 movies in the total list of 49 films that have collected over Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office so far. Besides Dabangg (Rs 145 crore, 2010) and Dabangg 2 (Rs 158 crore, 2012), he had Bodyguard (Rs 142 crore, 2011), Ready (Rs 120 crore, 2011) and Jai Ho (Rs 111 crore, 2014). Of course, Shahrukh has six films in that list—Happy New Year, Chennai Express, Dilwale, Ra.One, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Don 2, all between 2011 and 2015. But the sum total of the money collected by these movies (Rs 921.35 crore) falls far short of the Rs 1,326.75 crore earned by five movies of Aamir (Dangal, PK, Dhoom 3, 3 Idiots and Ghazni) on the same list.

All the same, SRK remains a big draw with a massive and varied fan base—and not just in India or among NRIs, as his peculiarly soft/hard persona enjoys a unique niche among European audiences too. That kind of genuine crossover appeal isn’t something Aamir or Salman can really boast of. But trade experts believe he has not drawn enough on the many-sided potential innate to him, or eked out a filmography that exploited the many shades of his persona. Unlike Aamir—and even Salman to some extent—he has stayed put in his comfort zone too long, according to them. Ideally, he should have taken a leaf out of Aamir’s book, who was the first among the trio to realise that it was the script, and not star power, that could really work at the box office.
Quite early in his career, Aamir is said to have even declined to work in a movie that his father, filmmaker Tahir Hussain, wanted to direct after Tum Mere Ho (1990) without seeing its script. Later, he also desisted from working in cousin Mansoor Khan’s Josh (2000) because he did not wish to play another lover boy’s role (eventually essayed by a long-forgotten Chandrachur Singh in the film) and was keen on the part offered to Shahrukh in the film. That Mansoor was the director of his launch vehicle, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), apparently made no difference to him.
Not only that, the Dangal star has gone absolutely against the norm in another very interesting way: he has studiously avoided working a second time with many directors who gave him hit films. The list includes Ram Gopal Verma (Rangeela/1995), John Matthew Matthen (Sarfarsoh/1999), Rakesh Omprakash Mehra (Rang De Basanti/2006) and A.R. Murugadoss (Ghajini), to name a few. He did repeat Raj Kumar Hirani with PK (after 3 Idiots) and that too was only after he liked its script.

Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, releasing on the same day, is poised to split the votes with Raees, Shahrukh’s first hardcore commercial film after Dilwale (2015).
After a string of hit-and-run monsters like Ready, in recent years even Salman has consciously tried to go for interesting scripts: Bajrangi Bhaijan and Sultan came out of that search. SRK, however, has had no such strategy in the selection of his projects. Over the years, he did try to work with accomplished directors. So there have been Mani Ratnam (Dil se/1998), Aziz Mirza (Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani/2000), Santosh Sivan (Asoka/2001), Gowariker (Swades/2004), Amol Palekar (Paheli/2005) and Priyadarshan (Billo/2009). But the commercial failure of these collaborations apparently forced him to stay back in the Aditya Chopra-Karan Johar camp which kept offering him their brand of bubble-gum cinema.
In between, an occasional Chak De! India (2007) brought a long-overdue glimpse of what could have been. Normally, SRK has stayed with a deliberate over-the-topness that bridged the genre gap between action-comedies like Badshah and the grandiloquent Don, and worked equally well in both. Raees is an underworld flick too, but one backed by research and grounded in near-real events. And in Dholakia, one has a director who surely can tell a story, as his small-budget Parzania (2005) showed. But right now, as much as the film’s cinematic merit, everyone’s got their eyes on the number of voters he pulls in.

The best tributes to a superstar are perhaps those that were never heard much. Paradoxically for a kind of human figure that looms everywhere for millions of people—in remembered scenes, on billboards, in an abstracted sort of public consciousness—these may be spoken in intimate spaces, to friends or family, perhaps even to themselves. No one will know, for instance, what endearments to SRK may have been uttered by the wife and daughter of Farid Khan Sherani, the man who lost his life in the melee at Baroda railway station. He had taken his family, fans of Shahrukh Khan, to see the star as he passed by on August Kranti Express in a promotional rail yatra. Whatever they were, those words would have joined innumerable others, offered in joy and rapture, to an actor who’s now touching an incredible quarter-century at the top.

An unusual tribute to Shahrukh was once offered by a middle-aged German lady outside a film festival in Europe. “We love him”, she said, because “we have had enough” of the standard male prototype—the tall, macho man, strong and silent, the medieval gallant. In Shahrukh, on the contrary, they saw a kind of neurosis and vulnerability. It is he who perhaps needs to be protected. Scan his films over the last 25 years, and it rings true. SRK’s is a persona composed of more complex notes than that of the average, monochrome Bollywood hero—quite outside the question of whether his filmography has entirely harnessed it. He has enough strings to his bow to attract an arthouse director, or a wide-eyed NRI kid…or a sedate European. In their time, Raj Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan had that crossover appeal—but they got their Russia and Egypt, one suspects, by just being the arch representatives of Hindi cinema. (And Rajnikanth got his Japanese legions by approximating to the dark, flamboyant comic-hero.) SRK, on the other hand, seems to have a kind of cosmopolitan tinge that could genuinely speak to everyone.
Mostly, it was delivered to us with that deliberate over-the-topness. But the quiet moments have a way of creating their own space too. In Swades, as a NASA scientist returning to his village, Shahrukh’s character, seated in a crowded train, buys water from a boy on a platform. The boy, running with the train to sell water for 25 paise per glass, triggers a transformation in the scientist. Intense, but understated. One of those moments that turned the 2004 film from “commercial” to “critically acclaimed”. It was perhaps bettered with some of those wordless glances in Chak De (2007), but otherwise it remained a minor stream in the SRK school of acting.
Swades came after Kal Ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na and Veer Zara—the known ‘Raj-Rahul’ territory for SRK. Without over-analysing his choices—because the freedom to make them rests with the one making them—he did seem to step out of his comfort zone every now and then, only to go back, and then dart out again, a cautious guerilla. Paheli, then the swash-and-burn of Don, then the remarkably controlled Chak De….

    METAMORPHOSIS
Shahrukh began his career with TV serials in the late 1980s—Fauji being an early hit.
“Shahrukh would do three shifts a day (on the sets of Raju Ban Gaya). He’d do 20 rehearsals, retakes till that scene sparkled.
    Juhi Chawla, Actress
The journey for the 51-year-old Khan started with the aptly-titled Deewana. He’s visibly tired, yes, but as passionate about work and cinema—if not more, if that was at all possible. Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia, has set off some nice social media frenzy—helped along by talk of “researched” facts about bootlegging in 1980s Gujarat, denials about any connection to real-life don Abdul Latif, and other political pressure-points. It comes after Dear Zindagi, in which he played a counsellor to Alia Bhatt, and Fan in which he essayed both a film star and his innocent-turned-evil fan. Is this yet another experimental phase?

“I think it’s better to go wrong doing the new than go right in doing the done. I really believe that,” Shahrukh tells Outlook (see interview). “Many times I’m blamed for doing the same. I don’t get that but I accept it. And I don’t do different for the sake of doing different. I do it because it’s important, it feels good and it’s high time. It does work out eventually.” With the VFX-heavy superhero flick Ra.One, for example, he did take a leap of faith factoring in the losses—“because if I don’t, who will?”

In these 25 years, he has bought a bungalow on Bandstand, Bandra, set up Red Chillies Entertainment, hosted TV shows, bought a cricket team in the Indian Premier League, has a following of 23 million on Twitter, has two honorary doctorates, has been named a Chubbs Fellow at Yale University, and has had three children with Gauri Khan, his companion for three decades. Flops and controversies have stalked him on this journey but the dimpled star’s aura hasn’t ebbed.

But after all these years, is he a conformist or not so much? “He’s doing films which are different now. Not to forget, he started out with Mani Kaul and Ketan Mehta,” says Anupama Chopra, film critic and author of King of Bollywood. “The films that made him a superstar are the YRF, Karan Johar films about affluent people living abroad but he has had his forays….” Any statement about his oeuvre has to be a qualified one.

My Name Is Khan (2010) went on to add glitter to the star.
“He writes minimally, and with such depth and simplicity. I urge him to publish about his journey so far and not wait any longer.”
    Mahesh Bhatt, Filmmaker
Posterity has conferred on his blink-and-miss role in In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones a jokey relevance. But his early wsork—the serials he did before his mother’s death in 1991, the early hero—gave notice of one on the verge of something big, partly because of his genre of looks, partly because of his strange energy. It seemed, over the years, that he had internalised a lot from the past, Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh. But his acting persona was entirely of his own making—oscillating between the comedic and the noirish, both deliberately overblown, and the sun-kissed boy right out of Riverdale High.

First blood was drawn by the anti-hero films, Baazigar and Darr, which SRK still credits to lack of choice. “Shahrukh was an outsider, what he has had to do is innovation. It’s well-known that no one was giving him the sweet boy roles. He took the villainous roles rejected by others. But they worked…because there was a certain passion. He was all heart,” says filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who has SRK with Anushka Sharma for his next, a love story, yes, but a little “different”.
SRK’s first ‘Raj’ may have come in Aziz Mirza’s Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, but it wasn’t until DDLJ that he became the romantic hero that fans drool over and critics love to hate. The forgettable Trimurti, Ram Jaane and Chaahat apart, he teamed up with Abbas-Mustan, Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and Mani Ratnam to set the box office ringing. DDLJ continues hold on to its matinee show at Maratha Mandir even now—creating its own legend. A quick glance also throws up a quirky Maya Memsaab, and associations with Mani Kaul, Ketan Mehta, Kundan Shah et al—all genres. Every few years he returned to Aziz Mirza—Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, all with Juhi Chawla, co-owner in his Kolkata Knight Riders team.

“I had not seen those serials when I first him on the sets of Raju Ban Gaya,” Juhi Chawla tells Outlook, reminiscing. “I was working with Azizji for the first time, they had already worked together. I thought of it as a sweet love story. Shahrukh was extremely hard-working. He’d do 20 rehearsals, retakes till that one scene sparkled. He’d do three shifts a day…I was doing one. He wrote scenes together with Azizji. We clicked together. We had great times, but in our heart of hearts we were simple people. We wanted to work and do something nice and we had Azizji, who spoke of the common man, his aspirations. It was very endearing.”
Juhi was also the leading lady in Darr, the object of Shahrukh’s obsessive stalker with the infamous kkkkkkiran stammer. This turn with YRF resulted in a long, happy association, full of the feted hits that exuded the glossy air of post-reforms India and brought in NRI audiences. Aziz Mirza, who says he no longer watches films, says the world is all about instant gratification now. “He’s a good boy, intelligent, good background. Also very aware, always understood value systems. He has had to move with the times. Maybe something more relevant is in the pipeline,” Mirza says.
Mahesh Bhatt, the maverick filmmaker whose daughter Alia recently had SRK in a supporting role, has known him for many years. It was on his urging that Khan decided to pen his yet-to-be-completed autobiography, Twenty Years in a Decade. Bhatt says, “He’s a national treasure. A self-made man who touched dizzying heights. Ultimately we are the stories we are shaped by. I felt he has a story. We know his professional world through filmmakers—larger than life and all that. But in his autobiography he gives you access to the inner sanctum of his heart. I had got a glimpse of this in the ’90s, sensed the depth, narrative flowing like a stream in him.” Khan is waiting to add more chapters (see interview).
“Stars also get trapped in their image and what people or industry expects of them. It’s a plastic world, you know,” says Kundan Shah, who made Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na with Shahrukh. It was in fact his first film but did not find distributors for a long time—until Shahrukh himself stepped in. He loved the film so much that he bought rights to the film a few years ago. But by then, whether by choice or not—trapped he was. The open arms, sweet smile, hamming with tearful eyes, getting beaten up before screaming in extreme rage, trapped in all that.
There were comparisons with Dilip Kumar and Bachchan (with whom there were rumours of differences)—the three posed together for a Filmfare cover in 2013. Not to mention the other two Khans—Salman and Amir. Their films, their personal equations, the great friendships and greater falling-outs. In between, there were oddities—Asoka, and much later Shimit Amin’s Chak De. Then Farhan Akhtar’s delicious outing, the Don remake—another anti-hero, complete with guns and sexy women. But he only plays at macho, almost jokily. In his movies, the heroine’s name rolls before his in credits. There were also controversies: on the Chaiyya Chaiyya lyrics, on the word ‘barber’, Manoj Kumar taking umbrage at his portrayal in Om Shanti Om.
Things started to get really worrying when Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan met with violent political protests about SRK’s positive statements about Pakistani cricket players— the avoidably gooey, over-the-top KJo signature ensures that controversy is what the film will finally be remembered for. But SRK has had to pay a price for being one of the most articulate and vocal among stars. And perhaps he has learnt his lessons the hard way.
“We live in unforgiving times,” says Bhatt. “An icon like him has so much riding on his shoulders. He doesn’t have the luxury to speak his worldview. It’s good to use tact in these times when you are walking in a field of mines and silly to become a sitting duck for somebody. There’s a certain amount of caution, it’s a reflection of the times we live in. He knows he is a solitary animal and is out there on his own without any political clout. He’s worldly-wise now but the whispers in his heart can be heard loud and clear by those who choose to tune into his art.” In his keynote address at Yale, SRK even described himself (and anyone creative) as a funambulist, a tightrope walker.
Juhi wants him to “look after his health”, but that tightrope must be walked because the hunger is still insatiable. Anupama believes the power and influence that comes with his territory can do wonders for the industry, if he wishes. “The three Khans are institutions by themselves. When they push the envelope, the envelopes move. I wish he should just go wild,” she says. “I know he believes his best is yet to come,” says Imtiaz Ali. The final word to Bhatt: “I told Alia that Dear Zindagi works because of that man. His energy, his large heartedness made the film sparkle. You can sense his aloneness, not loneliness. He has a light of his own. Like a beast in the jungle, a lion or tiger, alone and complete. I feel he will polevault out of that straitjacketed space.”

        • But Marcus has a point as Shahrukh’s last 3, 4, 5 or more movies have underperformed or been outright failures depending on the sources one trusts in comparison to Akshay whose last 3 movies have been big hits & have made money for every one involved in the business! And their ROI with respect to their budgets has also been also profitable to the makers in absolute numbers! And on top of that he is churning 3 to 4 movies a year which makes it more commendable as people don’t wait for his movies as much as say Aamir, then Shahrukh & then Salman as their releases are lesser than Akshay which gives people wait more for a Khan’s movie/s due to their lesser frequency than Akshay where they know that if they miss Jolly LLB 2, they would have Akshay releases in next few months! So keeping that in mind, it becomes imperative for Khans to come up with comparatively bigger openers & bigger grossers than Akshay to stay ahead of him. But 140, 68, 85, 140 grossers from Shahrukh’s last releases are not suggesting the gulf between him & Akshay as big or even if any at all projected by the trade & media! If Aamir is coming after 2 years in TOH & delivers just 150 or 200 Crores grosser, then Salman would be undoubtedly No. 1 as his releases are more frequent than Aamir & yet that is not affecting his grossing capability!
So in my view Akshay is at 3rd spot ahead of Shahrukh as he has been more consistent despite more releases than him & neither Shahrukh has delivered a mega grosser lately to remain at 3rd place. Akshay’s highest grosser is RR at 132 but it’s not the case that he is coming up with 70 or 80 Crore grossers whereas Shahrukh has been delivering huge grossers in the vicinity of 200 Crores with his releases, if that were the case, then Akshay at 4th would have made sense with such huge gap between his & Shahrukh’s movies! But with 2 grossers in almost 130 range & 1 at around 110, I would have him ahead of Shahrukh as Raees is a huge let down for Shahrukh & it needed 175 or more to make Shahrukh stable at 3rd place but with just 135 Crores, Akshay moves ahead of Shahrukh on the strength of sheer volume & rational budgeting of his movies ensuing in genuine & clean hits.

I was taken-aback by Master’s outburst calling me not dumb, but ‘dumber [which means, I had been making dumber comments previously as well, when it comes to SRK.] In reply to another comment of mine, Z had called me dumb, by taking one sentence completely out of context. It was my mistake that I attributed the ‘Muslimness’ factor being harped on to both of them. I was on the not-so-smart-phone and couldn’t even properly search for all comments but when I did I realized my error and immediately apologized to Master for mixing-up.

Anyway, good that it’s over. Thanks Myselfaamir for supporting me – though don’t know whatever traversed after 4 pm Wednesday due to personal reasons since I have barely checked the blog after that.

I too might come here very infrequently now, but not because of one rude response or anything, but just because I have some other stuff to attend to.

I will however, as I mentioned, ‘politely’ disagree with both Master and Z on their takes; with Master since I didn’t find this film as superior — be it even the 2nd ‘grim’ half [& God knows I like serious, grimy films]; with ‘Z’ on the religious angle being a hold-back for some — you know who — folks.

I dont know why everybody is questioning Kaabil collections only, Raees makers have also made big strides in manipulation. This is really a sad state of affairs, where one party is trying to outdo other in manipulation. It seems to be a clash of ego, more about perception than actual collection

    • Agree Raj on your manipulation comments.

Let me extend. RCE were presenting numbers quickly over holidays as they knew they were beating Kaabil but since then they’ve deliberately waited for FKP to release weekday figures just so they can be ahead when they release their own. FKP were dishonest from off, since long time. RCE are converts.

      • Exactly till weekend collections of Raees were fine, so there was no need to go for higher numbers, as weekdays collections have not been commensurate to their expectation they started manipulation, and they need to compete with Roshans too, otherwise RCE may loose the perception game.

    Hasta la vista, baby.

The war of words between the former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Donald Trump is heating up – not over policy, but TV ratings.

On Thursday, Trump converted a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast into a discussion about The Apprentice, a reality show he used to host.

“We had tremendous success on The Apprentice, and when I ran for president, I had to leave the show,” Trump said. “That’s when I knew for sure I was doing it. And they hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out. The ratings went right down the tubes, it’s been a total disaster, and (creator Mark Burnett) will never, ever bet against Trump again,” he said.

Arnold’s spokesperson had a ready comeback: “Arnold is praying that President Trump can start improving his own approval ratings, which were the worst in history for an incoming president, by taking his job seriously and working inclusively,” the statement to ABC News read.

Schwarzenegger, 70, then released a video in response. “Hey Donald,” he said. “I have a great idea. Why don’t we switch jobs: You take over TV, because you’re such an expert in ratings, and I take over your job. Then people can finally sleep comfortably again.”

Dangal (Hindi) is still continuing at cinemas in its seventh week with over 373 crore nett in six weeks under its belt already. The film has broken records in most of the circuits. The ones which won’t make an all time record are Mumbai, Bihar, Assam and Odisha while West Bengal is looking a photo finish. In CP Berar it has made a record in NETT collections but its distributor share is still below Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Bihar is the worst performing circuit as it was unable to beat the other big Aamir Khan starrers PK and Dhoom 3. The film will close with an all India distributor share of 180 crore apprx. The business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,92,38,00,000
    Second Week – 1,11,56,00,000
    Third Week – 44,02,00,000
    Fourth Week – 14,69,00,000
    Fifth Week – 8,62,00,000
    Sixth Week – 1,79,00,000

Raees dropped again on the second Friday with collections around 2.75 crore nett. The total collections of the film are now around 114.50 crore nett. The collections are still a little ahead of Kaabil but now both films are doing similar business The collections dropped around 35% from the previous day as there was a big reduction screens but some of that was compensated by the higher weekend ticket rates. The second weekend may go to around 10 crore nett or a little higher but that is not good for a big film like Raees. The business of Raees till date is as follows.

    First Week – 1,11,75,00,000
    Second Friday – 2,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 1,14,50,00,000

The lifetime business of the film will not stay below Dilwale (2015) as that film did manage to sustain a little better possibly as it was Xmas period as the public response to that film was not really better than Dilwale.

Kaabil had a low second Friday with collections of 2.50 crore nett which has taken the total business to 69.50 crore nett apprx. The film dropped around 15-20% from the previous day which is not bad but the collections are too low and to get any decent final total the film had to show growth on its second Friday. The film has managed to get the closest it has ever been to Raees but the collections are still a little less. There should be good growth on the second Saturday and maybe it could get even closer to Raees but that remains to be only target for the film as its box office fate is sealed. Even if the film does start to collect more than Raees on a daily business it will still struggle to make any major dent in the lead of Raees The business of Kaabil till date is as follows.

    First Week – 67,00,00,000
    Second Friday – 2,50,00,000

    TOTAL – 69,50,00,000

The business of the film is poor across all circuits of India though it has managed to go ahead of Raees in places like Rajasthan, CI and East Punjab. The weekend of the film could go to around 10 crore nett and or even a little higher but a 20 crore nett second week is impossible and that is where the film problem is as a big film that does not open well has to atleast get 20 crore nett in week two.

Ritesh Sidhwani joked that Mahira thought we will cross the 100 crore mark on the very first day. “But we weren’t making a film with Salman Khan or Aamir Khan” he added.

Recounting her arrival in Mumbai, for the shoot, Mahira joked, “When I reached the Mumbai Airport, I thought I’d be greeted by Shah Rukh running towards me, with his arms open. But that didn’t happen.” She also added that she is unaware of the film’s collections.
Shah Rukh was asked how does he feel that so many actresses like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and now Mahira Khan have debuted opposite him, and have gone on to become major stars of our times, “Deepika was already working in South. Anushka was also into modelling, and Mahira was acting before as well. All three of them were working before debuting in a film with me.”

SRK, on the other hand, found the song to be a tough one, “It was a tough song. I’ve never done garba in my 25 years in the film industry. I had to work hard for it. I am more of a performer, whereas Nawazuddin and Mahira are great actors. Picking up the beats of a song comes naturally to them.”

  54. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he always wanted to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and when the filmmaker offered him a role in his directorial venture ‘Black’ he did not charge a single penny for it.

Amitabh Bachchan calls ‘Sairat’ a Marathi wonder
In a special blog dedicated to ‘Black’, which clocks twelve years today, the 74-year-old actor said just being a part of such a beautiful project was more than enough for him. “I had just wanted to work with Sanjay, after seeing all his other works he had done… And when the opportunity came it was quite overwhelming. I did not take any salary for the film… Just being a part of such an enterprise, was sufficient fees !” Bachchan wrote.

The film based on the real life story of Helen Keller, starred Rani Mukerji as a blind and deaf woman to whom Big B played the teacher. Bachchan said the best moment of his life came when his idol veteran actor Dililp Kumar attended the premier of the film and praised his performance. “At the premiere when we all saw the film, there was just those tears of joy within me, and of course the fact of having Dilip Saheb in the audience was a child hood dream coming true.”
“When the film got over, he stood outside the hall, held my hands and just looked into my eyes .. It was, what I could have allowed, to last for a lifetime!” he wrote. The actor concluded the post saying each and every detail Bhansali put in making of the film is still very much there in his heart. “12 years of its release…And each and every detail that accompanied it has been engraved on stone for me.”
For his role in the film Bachchan went on to receive his second National Film Award for best actor. The movie also won National award in best feature film in Hindi category.

Is it just me, or has Shah Rukh Khan become the most interesting actor around? This isn’t about his performing skills. This isn’t about his box-office clout, healthy enough for a star, yet nowhere near that of the other two Khans of his generation, Salman and Aamir. This is about where the actor is at this point, at some kind of crossroads. He’s too old to pull off the demented lover and Raj-Rahul routines that made him a superstar – even the mature variants of Raj and Rahul haven’t quite done the trick, as the modest returns of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Dilwale prove. But he hasn’t figured out what the alternative is. He’s trying to reinvent himself. But as what? He doesn’t seem to know. We don’t either. And that’s… interesting.

    • srk can get into politics, surely superstars decling years ahead of him usually takes those path or try a ” Villain ” opposite akki, ranveer or even salman ,why not …

      Like

    • SRK is also getting extremely insecure, annoyed, irritated about this confused state he finds himself in. Karan Johar recently revealed that he backed away from the friendship once he felt Karan was getting friendlier with the other Khans and doing films without him. That reveals a side to SRK I did not know. He also seems to have some resentment against Ranveen Singh who was cast in Befikre by Adi.

Other stars also have their favourite filmmakers but no one is so possessive or dependent. Of course if you leave out the likes of Ajay Devgan who feels that way about Rohit Shetty.

SRK has been struggling since a long time now. He just comes across as a bit bitter and egoistical. Suddenly he is talking about how big a star he is, how he had big hits no one else had earlier. This is clearly the talk of a star who fears his biggest years are behind him. There is a shadow of Rajesh Khanna, though SRK’s stardom has lasted much much longer. But there is the same feeling of disbelief and deluded appearance on saw in Khanna. he chided Kareena a few yeas ago because she called Aamir the God of acting.

He takes jibes at anyone who he thinks is loyal to other stars.

This is a timely piece by Rangan. It is indeed interesting to see where his career goes.

      Like

      • It is obvious that he cares about loyalty, because the only actress he got very close to was Priyanka Chopra. And one of the reasons was because she was his unabashed fan, who didn’t appear eager to cozy up to the other Khans. SRK clearly liked that about her, and even got involved with her somewhat.

A person who ardently supports and promotes someone because they are faithful and loyal to him is correspondingly going to detach himself and get angry if that person doesn’t show the same level of devotion. That is what is happening with Adi and Karan.

A drug is any substance other than food, that which can be inhaled, injected, smoked or consumed by a person. Consuming any form of drugs is very harmful to human body, but yet people fall prey to such habits either due to socializing, peer pressure, depression or any other reason.

But the fact remains, that drugs causes harm and needs to be avoided. In Mumbai it’s been reported that drug peddlers target college youths in pubs, disco and other joints, while slum dwellers also prey to such substance are seen lying in an unconscious state by the road side.

Apart from these, the drug menace has also hit the rich and high flying celebrities from the glamour world of Bollywood. Some of the famous stars of yesteryear’s and current generation were reportedly involved in some of the other form of drug abuse – whether usage, possession or transit

In fact would have been more interested in knowing SRK’s character’s past and probably they could have shown another unconventional/funny way SRK could have used to convince her she is fine and needs no more sessions. I may have seen his point with regards to some other film but to say that only the story is king in Dangal is ridiculous. The writing is strong but it wouldn’t have been one tenth of the film if not for Aamir.

          Liked by 3 people

        • VVC’s quote of story is the king makes his job of producing movies irrelevant as per him the good stories get translated in to a movie w/o the need of competent directors (make anybody a director with good story!) & the producer becomes redundant in the process, so do away with this department based on your comment & VVC becomes jobless! He has hoards to sustain himself for the rest of his life thanks to Hirani & Aamir. Take Hirani out of his production house only then he would realise the immense value of a director & a star!

          Liked by 2 people

      • Remember VVC made Aamir sign a clause that he wont interfere with the film? VVC is stating what he needs..that he needs Hirani as the director and the story of course he brings.

        Like

        • Yes Aamir is a greenhorn in Bollywood to sign such a clause. This guy is shameless and still comes on public platform and give gyaan to people after failure and absolute duds by the dozen.

Even after all the talent Hirani benefited immensely with aamir association and I don’t know about 3I but PK would be a sub standard without an Aamir there to make it work. Dutt Biopic is round the corner and even after sitting on this project for 4-5 years all the truth will be revealed.

India is a nation driven by stars and nothing is going to change in the near future. Just look at all the ‘story’ and ‘director’ driven over achievers for the whole of last year. What is the 2nd highest total after Dangal and Sultan …..a meager 130 cr and that too had another superstar MSDhoni’s name attached to it.

A fan keeps a very-very close tab on his competitor’s history even at the risk of erasing his idol’s past as memory needs space & fan prefers to keep his competitor’s history so as to use it as a weapon for the support of his idol as he is fully aware that his idol’s present & future don’t give him this luxury to win the war 😉

‘Dangal’ success bash: Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Rekha attend Aamir Khan’s star-studded party
    TNN | Updated: Feb 5, 2017, 08.10 AM IST
While most stars are quick to announce a success bash within days of their film’s release, Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, likes to do things differently. The actor likes to throw a success bash only when his film is truly a success in every sense of the word. Over 40 days after the release of ‘Dangal’, which now holds the distinction of being Bollywood’s highest grosser of all time, Aamir and the film’s team got together to host a success bash on Saturday night. And when you’re celebrating the success of Hindi cinema’s biggest film, it is only natural that the night will be high on star power. All of Bollywood came together to celebrate Aamir’s labour of love – a film that is easily the most loved one of the year gone by.

Aamir looked dapper in a Nehru jacket while his wife Kiran Rao looked elegant in a golden sari. The two shared an ‘aww’ moment on the red carpet as the actor endearingly planted a kiss on Kiran’s cheek. The two were gracious hosts as they welcomed their guests. Aamir’s daughter Ira too was by her father’s side on his big day.

Karan Johar was one of the early birds at the party. The filmmaker heaped praises on the actor as he said, “Aamir is a game-changer and he has given mainstream cinema a new voice.” Celebrated singer Asha Bhosle too was all praise for the film as she said, “I had decided not to watch the film as I don’t like to watch wrestling. But ‘Dangal’ is a beautiful film and Aamir is a brilliant actor.”

‘Dangal’ girls – Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanaya Malhotra – posed on the red carpet with their on-screen mom Sakshi Tanwar. While Fatima looked gorgeous in a black number, Sanya showed off her glamorous side in a one-shoulder dress. Zaira Wasim too wouldn’t miss the bash for the world. Director Nitesh Tiwari and wife Ashwini Iyer Tiwari were seen bonding with the guests.

The otherwise reclusive Rekha made it a point to attend the bash and congratulate Aamir in person. It was every photographer’s delight as the senior actress and Aamir posed together on the red carpet.

Vidya Balan walked in hand-in-hand with husband Siddharth Roy Kapur. The actress looked like a dream in a golden Anavila sari.

Alia Bhatt came in with director friend Ayan Mukerji. Shahid Kapoor looked suave in black and his wife Mira dazzled as always in a blue number. While Kriti Sanon showed off her toned pins in a short blue outfit, Sunny Leone looked ravishing in a black number. The red carpet witnessed a whole lot of bonding – if on one hand, veteran actresses Waheeda Rehman and Asha Parekh posed together, on the other hand, former beauty queens Dia Mirza and Lara Dutta were seen chatting nineteen to the dozen.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra graced the event. The ‘3 idiots’ producer was quite forthright in asserting that Aamir is not the sole reason behind the film’s immense success. He said, “Aamir Khan is not the king, the story of ‘Dangal’ is the king. Even if the film didn’t have Aamir and had Hrithik Roshan, even then it would work at the box-office.”

Others at the party included Jeetendra with son Tusshar, Anil Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, Randhir Kapoor, Imran Khan and Randeep Hooda.

Why srk is hated the most among the Khans? there are so many theories going around. His boasting. Alleged award manipulation. Media manipulation and having PR done by some mediawallahs. His hamming instead of acting and getting away with it. Playing minority card to get sympathy. Too much air and little substance. Ego.
Yes, he is working very hard. But that hardwork is not always about acting and doing good cinema.
He has got some charisma and that charisma is working till today.

Its just that the things you said in above post were done so shamelessly and boasted so arrogantly that apart from SRK fans and PR machinery no one could stand it any longer. I think it was a very gradual process though which became more vocal a decade back.
Though he continues to have a loyal fanbase for good reasons. He is good, but was never as good as he was made out to be. Some still believe in the hype he had created despite numerous failures in last decade or so. Again mainly due to his PR machinery. I really admire his PR skills though and his wit really helps him.

Raees probably is touching 120 cr by now (till saturday) and Kaabil perhaps 85 cr or so.

    • Raees will probably end up at 130 cr and Kaabil in 90-95 cr range. Dont think there will be too much losses involved for both, but no way these two can be counted as ‘success’ of any sort.

One good thing that has come out of these BO manipulations is that the sites that were quoting producer totals are now more confident about their own tracking numbers and are shunning the producer totals which look fishy.

It will be interesting if Jolly LLB 2 grosses more than 130 cr of Raees.

Aamir is always good in mixing things up. He did a Ghajini after TZP, a Dhoom after Talaash and now TOH after Dangal.

TOH seems to be an action packed adventure film in a period setting, which sounds quite promising. Waiting for Diwali 2018!

The craze for MP was at its peak (specially after DCH). Had to stand in a long queue to get tickets in the first place and watched it in a jam packed theater in first week.

The movie didnt do much at box office after week one. But the opening was super and it recovered its costs.

Now their under reporting might be in some people’s minds within a certain threshold. But that’s only right If all collections of ALL movies went in that direction. They don’t, based on this they have leverage to fudge commentary and verdicts.

The estimate sites are wrong as they waited too long to expose the trade and producers. If you have the data use it.

Kaabil (Hindi) showed growth of around 60% on its second Saturday which was a little better than Raees and the collections were in the same range to Raees on day eleven with 4 crore nett. This has taken the total of the film to 73.50 crore nett which is not good.

There was an excuse in the first weekend as Raees was strong but even that does not mean you collect just 31 crore nett over the first three days and that too when one is a big national holiday but this week Raees has low occupancy so is not much of a factor but the problem is the occupancy of Kaabil is only slightly better. The business of Kaabil till date is as follows.

First Week – 67,00,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,50,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

Second Weekend – 6,50,00,000 (Two days)

    TOTAL – 73,50,00,000

The film is now leading Raees in terms of daily collections in Delhi /UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CI and Bihar while in other circuits Raees is leading barring Mumbai where both films are same with a little over 1 crore nett.

Raees showed growth of around 50% which is the normal trend for the second weekend. The film collected four crore nett on the second Saurday taking its 11 day total 118.50 crore nett. The growth on the second Saturday is not huge as films can grow 80-100%. Although here the film has had an extended first week so growth was always likely to be less.

The film will cross the business of other Republic day week releases like Agneepath and Airlift shortly but its still an under performance. Even taking into account the clash the film still managed to open and the problem has been holding. The business of Raees till date is as follows.

First Week – 1,11,75,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,75,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

Second Weekend – 6,75,00,000 (two days)

    TOTAL – 1,18,50,00,000 apprx

The business of Kaabil has caught up with Raees for the first time since they released as both films have grossed similar amounts on the second Saturday. Kaabil could go ahead of Raees possibly on Sunday or one of the weekdays

“Till today I never signed a film on the basis of its capability to do business. I prefer to choose a film from my heart. All the films I’ve done till now are those which touched my heart,” he said.

“‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Rang De Basanti’ or ‘Sarfarosh’, when I did those films, I never thought they would do such a good business. If you take ‘Dangal’ as an example, I played a role of an aged and heavy wrestler. There are no romantic songs or any typical formula to become a blockbuster. Therefore, we never predicted that the film would be such a big hit,” he added.

“I would never do films like ‘Dhobi Ghat’ with Kiran if I have ever thought of doing films by its number.” Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist told the reporters.

Asked if he wants to take forward the success internationally, Aamir said that for him the most respectable award is his audience’s love.

“Other than this, I do not think about any other awards.”

Aamir also spoke about the recent attack of a mob on the “Padmavati” set in Jaipur.

Saying that the attack on Sanjay Leela Bhansali as “unfortunate”, the 51-year-old actor said: “Taking law in our own hand is not legal for anyone. What has happened is very wrong and saddening. The people of Rajasthan are very much lovable and sensible. My experience with the people and the place was very good.”

“When a small group does this kind of an act, then the entire populattion gets a wrong name. This is very regrettable,” he said.

Why remind the poor chap about his first failed marriage?☺️ The media also asked him about Valentine’s Day and Aamir quipped that ‘ for us every day is Valentine’s Day.’ Biwi smiled along. I guess they have learnt to accept each other beyond the pin pricks over an 11 year marriage that can sometimes spill on to the public stage, as with any celebrity.

    • I don’t agree as he had had breaks lasting for a year in between his one movie release to the next. After RNBDJ, his next MNIK came after almost 14 months & a bigger gap of almost 20 months or more than 1.5 years in his next release in Ra-1 in Oct. 2011!! So this break theory doesn’t make sense as he is not in his prime where he could afford such gaps & also feeble box office performances of his previous few movies which don’t give him the luxury to bask in the glory of his last mammoth successes like Salman & Aamir can! So rather than taking a break he should relax a bit & let his directors do what they would like to do with him with out pandering to his stardom & his image becoming the handicap in not being able to realise their vision in its totality. This is what happened with Rohit Shetty in Dil Wale where he could not make what he actually wanted to only because of the external pressures I mentioned above as he kept vacillating between his sensibilities to catering to the expectations of Shahrukh-Kajol combo fans which resulted in half-backed recipe of Dil Wale!! If Rohit Shetty had stuck to his belief & sensibilities, which he did while making CE, Dil Wale would not have been such a hotchpotch niether here or there!!

  79. I partially agree with what Vidhu Vinod Chopra said about Dangal and Aamir.
Dangal is a movie where Aamir was the third best actor after the girls. The movie could become genuine because of its strong supporting cast. In fact the story was about Geetha Phogat. It’s another matter that the girls did not get the recognition in the awards they deserved to win. So any other good actor in place of Aamir would have given an equally good movie.

What i do not agree is that the movie had been equally successful. Aamir brought in huge credibility and honesty by giving his physicality for the role. This dedication is exemplary and don’t think any other actor barring Tom Hanks or Leonardo DiCaprio could have done it.

Aamir fans could not understand that VVC actually gave the best compliment to Dangal. Unfortunately for fans, hero is bigger than the movie and hence all joined and attacked VVC like the Karni Sena. Someone rightly said – Aamir Khan’s fans are showing intolerant behaviour known with SRK earlier.

    • Aamir as third best actor after the girls? No, I don’t think that’s right. Aamir did his job perfectly , as needed, neither underplaying nor hamming. He was pitch perfect.

Actually Aamir is the first person to admit that the girls and Sakshi did a fabulous job, that their understanding and execution of their characters was quick, that he laboured more. But, and this is my point, Aamir’s labour bore fruit. He never came across as the actor Aamir, but managed to immerse himself well into the character.

The girls were terrific and have been recognized as such by the audience.

VV Chopra is a bit like Ram Gopal Varma — blunt, outspoken and graceless. You don’t attend an actor’s success party and use the occasion to snidely diss him.

Dangal would not have reached where it did if anybody other than Aamir had produced the film. Aamir is known to take keen interest in every aspect of filmmaking. Even the songs ( like the iconic , intelligent and hilarious Hanikarak Bapu) were written and composed in Aamir’s Panchgani home. The same process was followed when the music of Tare Zameen Par was being composed.

Here is revealing interview from Dangal Director Nitesh Tiwari. Do read it to the end.
But also — ignore the mischievous headline and loaded questions from an interviewer who has obviously not appreciated the film, understood its spirit or its essence.

      • It’s dubious and disingenuous to suggest Dangal with any other actor would create the same result. It is because of Aamir’s credibility and reputation that the film was taken seriously. If Dangal and Sultan released opposite, the surprise elements of Dangal would dwarf any entertainment value Sultan has to offer. VVC and people believing this rubbish are persistent and persuaded into believing John Abraham can do the same.

Basically the theory is any great script can be acted by ME and be super result. Even worse than this, the film I produced and acted in will do wonders. Only haters put forward such stupid arguments. So basically every actor is the same, everything depends on the content. What utter garbage! And we are meant to view this as a HUGE compliment. Give me a break!

It is not even about giving Aamir all credit. It’s about ones own dignity in making or putting forward such arguments. VVC’s Parinda was fine as I recall. At the time Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff were seen as brothers on and off screen. So he believes any Tom, Dick & Harry can carry off that lineage that the cast offered. Let’s face it Hirani’s the ONLY reason we get to listen to this overrated director who according to the BOI (THE FINAL SAY IN INDUSTRY) gave the industry’s biggest ever disaster in Broken Horses.

After putting on weight and doing the major portion of the film, Aamir is said to have given it in writing — that if the need arose and his younger- leaner portion needed to be done by another actor — then please chose Ranveer Singh or Ranbir Kapoor for that role. Meaning, if I kick the bucket during this risky process of quick weight loss — go ahead, complete the film with these guys.

The actors of MPK and HAHK had the same sugary and corny lines and behaved coyly and weirdly on screen but watch the difference to outcome when the same accomplished director hired so called good actors like Hrithik and Kareena and the results of those corny scenes in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. Audience rushed for the first exit…… So it’s not that director and story can do everything and actor is the last in chain. Not in India at least.

Why is that story and accomplished directors not able to produce one superstar in 25 years.

Kal Ho Na Ho with similar corny scene and joke somewhat became classic of its time for Johar but sadly he could not do the same with a similar ADHM inspite of having that beautiful title track and hit ost because cast does not have the same credibility and connection. But let him take this fanciful flight as that might alleviate the pain & suffering he has been going through due to Shahrukh’s recent failures & underperformers!!

        • I wud love to give you a link when I can find it..but don’t think that all people cook up stories just to pull stars down, as some of you do about SRK!

But I can tell you a little more about this comment which I saw on TV..and I am sure many here who follow Amitabh Bachchan so passionately must have seen it also..It was said on one of the channels a few years ago, where he was picking his favourite films post independence or some landmark like that. I think the channel was NDTV and his list featured both Lagaan and Swades. About Lagaan, this comment of his surprised me, and that’s why it is remembered still..while about Swades he said he cud see the conviction in SRK’s acting.. 😛

        • Even if he said so, that does not make aamir a lesser actor in Lagaan. Everyone has a right to express what they feel about acting. Even aamir said something about Black and that hurt Bachchan a lot. And Bachchan said about Delhi Belly being a shit film or some such thing as it clashed with BHTB but aamir did not react or expressed hurt feelings in both the cases. These things do happen and actors move on. Otherwise both will not be acting in a movie.

Like it or not since then he has been giving acting lessons to rest of Bollywood. And later BO lessons. Only thing I dislike is the 3-4 yr break that happened between 2001 and 2005. I think Aamir was in terrific acting form during those times. He was pulling off some terrific acting in 25 seconds ads too back then.

        • All this is reminding me of RGV’s comment about the actor who played waiter in that famous ac scene with Aamir in Rangeela being better actor than Aamir!! So you have another staunch supporter in RGV besides of course you who feels that way for Aamir by shoving off your own agenda in making Shahrukh seem bigger & better this way as this is the only way left!! Even for a second, just to mitigate your long sufferings a little less, assume what AB said is to be true (mind you just assuming until you give us concrete proof ;), what does that prove except that AB found one actor’s acting better or more natural than Aamir in Lagaan other than it was his opinion which is very subjective & it doesn’t take anything away from Aamir’s outstanding performance considerded to be one of the best of all times!! I hope he wasn’t saying Shahrukh’s K3G performance to be better than Aamir’s & Shahrukh “deserved” all the best actor awards for his natural acting that year!!

I’m amused at the perplexing state of Shahrukh’s fans where they are feeling “ecstatic” about AB’s one particular comment about Aamir’s performance in Lagaan as they have nothing else left to revel in their own idol’s recent films & their box office debacles so now they are busy excavating Aamir’s past to bring him down & jettison their sense of despair & frustration at its pinnacle!! I can just wish that they get to see the light rather quickly as this continous gloom can jeopardize their mental well-being!!
For the record I found Salman’s “acting better than Shahrukh’s in Karan Arjun 😉 Does that prove anything, if any let me discover!!

        • I will agree the Bachchans don’t have any particular soft corner for Aamir. On the other hand, Aamir adores Big B.

Amitabh is neutral on Aamir, but there is no love there either as far as I can tell. Big B is friendly, cordial and respectful towards Aamir, nothing more. I remember, he did not explicitly support Aamir during the Fanaa controversy. He went as far as to say that people objecting to him have as much democratic rights as Aamir does. Again, he took up the Incredible India campaign (I’m not sure it actually materialised). But that was another example of him not really standing up for Aamir. But then Big B for all his greatness as an actor has probably learnt it through the hard way never to take a stand. No one should rely on him to stand up for them. He just won’t. Of course, he spoke out against Harsha Bhogle’s commentary, leading to his sacking. But then Bhogle is a small fry and Big B is close now to the establishment.

Anyway, fact being he seems least close to Aamir among the Khans. I don’t see the Bachchans at any of Aamir’s events really. But then, are they at anyone else’s apart from their own or some usual suspect like Mukesh Ambani? They are a bit too full of themselves to accord anyone else any special privilege, but their stature is still altogether formidable.

So I agree, Bachchan’s equation with Aamir is nothing more than cordial, but I don’t really believe he said anything except great things about Lagaan. He had a small stake in the film, given he was the narrator, and I remember him writing a review of the film and calling it the most perfect film he has seen. Aamie Khan’s performance in Lagaan is too great for Bachchan or anyone to say it was underwhelming or whatever, forget saying everyone else in it was better! He may have indirectly paid a compliment by saying this is a rare film where the supporting cast outshines even the lead, but that can be said about so many films from Chak De to Sarfarosh to Sholay! I’m not suggesting he said this, but even if he did, I don’t think he meant to undermine Aamir.

Finally, even if he did, facts don’t change. I’m not a fan of Aamir’s performance in a number of films. Liked him in all his 90s films where he was very natural. HE is not great when cast against type – RDB, DCH IMO. Rangeela is an exception though. he was extraordinary there. And Lagaan is everything he personifies as a star and actor – earnest, brave, morally upright, people’s man. He just wouldn’t get that wrong!

          Liked by 1 person

        • Sandyi you have encapsulated the equation bit between AB & Aamir very poetically & succinctly. On your casting against the type take, I politely disagree as Aamir the actor in RDB surpasses Aamir in Lagaan IMO & I consider Aamir’s DJ performance as one among his top 5 others being PK, Sarfarosh, Rangeela & 1947 Earth the other 4. Even DCH & AAA acts of Aamir I like more than the Lagaan one, but Lagaan’s is a seminal performance for sure. Another thing I concur with you that Aamir’s 90’s performances were more natural than the post 2000 ones.

    • Your logic is contradictory as it would mean Airlift, Baby, Special 26, Rustom would have had the same result with any other star in Akshay’s place as the stories were the paramount reason behind these films success regardless of actors starring in them!! And if we go by your theory, then Sholays, Mother Indias, Guides, MEAs, DDLJs, Lagaans, Hera Pheris to be just as good & successful even when we replace the actors of these movies with any other actors based on your support of VVC’s childish hypothesis that “STORY” is the “KING”!! A movie like Dangal or TZP or RDB or Lagaan would not be 1/100th of what they turned out to be if they would have starred any other actor other than Aamir!! And if VVC claims are gospel truth then why credit Shahrukh behind the success of all his movies or his stardom as they would have been equally as successful had Aamir or Akshay or even Emraan Hashmi acted in them as all of them had “KING STORY” to ensure success!!

  81. BREAKING AWAY FROM THE BARD
By Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror | Feb 5, 2017

    Breaking away from the Bard
Ahead of his upcoming love story, the National Award winner on raking in more credibility than money, his roster of shelved projects, and why he’d rather be a fool.

When Vishal Bhardwaj announced Rangoon, his upcoming love story set in the time of World War II, many felt the filmmaker was done with Shakespeare adaptations. But when we meet him at his tastefully furnished Andheri office, he points to a crowded book shelf adjacent to his desk and says, “There’s still a lot left. I can adapt every Shakespeare play.” That said, he has chosen to take a break from the Bard’s works because “bohot ho gaya”. “And adaptations have made me lazy as it gives you a ready structure. I want to do something original,” says the National Award winner. The original idea for Rangoon emerged from a script lab organised by Mira Nair’s film school in Kampala, Uganda, in 2004, where Bharadwaj was mentored by American screenwriter Mathew Robbins (Crimson Peak). But for reasons largely to do with finance, the film was shelved two months prior to production. It was an “ambitious film” and the filmmaker wasn’t “mature enough” to have made it then. “Because you are judged by your last film (or films) and since this one demanded a huge canvas and was expensive, it wasn’t being made for so long. Over the years, VFX evolved by leaps and I matured as a filmmaker to achieve that vision within a budget.”

But this isn’t his first to be indefinitely held. “My first film Barf, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Sushmita Sen, and to be produced by Ajay Devgn, didn’t happen as Ajay had suffered losses with another film at the time.” Others include Aamir Khan-starrer Mr Mehta Mrs Singh, Dream Sequence and Mehmaan. “There are various reasons why a film gets shelved, it’s not always finance,” he says, adding that the Khanstarrer is the one he regrets the most. “I saw Dangal and really liked it.” This rare compliment must be well-deserved as Bhardwaj decidedly avoids Hindi films. “I don’t relate to them and since I am a part of the same industry, it becomes a problem,” he says, adding that he is addicted to Netflix and loves Black Mirror and The Americans.

Now, HT has learnt that the actor has gifted her two-bedroom apartment in Andheri (W) to Singh in a bid to help him start a yoga centre. “The apartment has a spacious balcony, where the yoga classes will be conducted,” says an insider.
Kangana Ranaut will next be seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon.

Apparently, Kangana’s apartment is worth more than Rs 2 crore. “It’s a kind gesture from Kangana, but she feels it’s her ‘guru dakshina’ to Singh, who has been a pillar of strength in her life right from the start. He has never asked her for anything like that, but the actor felt that she should do something for him,” the insider says.

Kangana isn’t just gifting Singh the posh apartment. The actor is apparently also helping him refurbish the place so it looks like “a nice yoga centre”. “In fact, Kangana visited the apartment a few days ago to instruct the contractor how to design and redo the house,” the insider says.

The actor is ensuring the proposed centre will have everything that is needed, from personal lockers to health amenities. “Since she will be recommending the yoga centre to everyone, the actor wants everything to be of high quality. She has always been sensitive to people around her,” says the insider.

Kangana had also gifted another two-bedroom apartment to her sister, Rangoli Chan

Plenty of influences from here and there. Don’t think the film is going to be a breakout film in any sense, and Varun Dhawan also gives me the sense of a guy who is trying too hard to stand out, but sadly he has nothing original to offer. Madhuri Dixit has an OBJECTION with Sanjay Dutt biopic!
Actress Madhuri Dixit Nene has even approached filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani due to…

    http://www.india-forums.com/bollywood/hot-n-happening/74824-madhuri-dixit-has-an-objection-with-sanjay-dutt-biopic.htm

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic film on Sanjay Dutt is witnessing many changes with every passing day. The film will showcase many aspects of Baba’s personal and professional life. Due to the controversies that had been revolving around him for so many years, it is becoming difficult for the makers to portray it on the big screens.

The film was also supposed to have Sanju’s love life, but now the makers are facing another challenge if they want to incorporate it!

When we talk about Sanjay Dutt’s love story, how can one not mention about his alleged and famous relationship with Madhuri Dixit. But it seems that the ‘Dhak Dhak girl’ isn’t in agreement with it.

Madhuri Dixit Nene is reported to have asked the makers to strike out the part (her and Sanjay’s relationship) from the script.

A tabloid quoted a source stating, “Initially, Sanjay’s alleged affair with Madhuri was a part of the biopic. But when the married actress got to know about this, she quickly rushed to Rajkumar and asked him to remove this bit from the movie. Their relationship is one of the most highlighted part of Sanjay’s life, but considering the actress’ current stature, she disapproved of the part. Left with no option, Hirani had to eliminate it from the film”. (sic)

Sanjay Dutt’s biopic will feature Ranbir Kapoor playing the title role. The film also stars Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Vicky Kaushal. It is slated to release sometime in December this year.

But when he was jailed etc – for terror activity – she obviously backed out. Love is not everything. Here. she was the very symbol of middle-class respectability. It just wasn’t in her sensibility to put romance above practical considerations.

But some of the media turn against her for not even visiting him in jail, forget standing by him. Madhuri has no way to know how exactly this episode will be portrayed in the film, and any negative tone can damage her reputation. So she’s right in one sense. But as an audience, this is very disappointing.

  89. Raees Has Big Drop In Second Weekend
    Monday 06 February 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network
Google+ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Addthis

Raees had a big drop in collections in the second weekend and even if we take the Fri – Sun period last week which was not exactly its first weekend the drop is nearly 75%. The collections in the second weekend are 11.75 crore nett which takes the business to 121.50 crore nett. The second weekend collections are not much better than Dear Zindagi which was a little short of 10 crore nett.

The difference between Raees and Kaabil is the initial and it is that which makes the film safe. The big numbers it took over the first five days has pulled it through and this was what Kaabil was not able to do. On Sunday Raees had lower collections than Kaabil for the first time. The business of Raees till date is as follows.

First Week – 1,10,05,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,75,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

    Sunday – 4,75,00,000

    Second Weekend – 11,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,21,55,00,000 apprx

It is circuits like Mumbai, Nizam / Andhra, Mysore, Tamil Nadu / Kerala and West Bengal which have aided the film and although these are down in the second weekend they outperformed the rest of India in the initial staged due to the presence of Shahrukh Khan. North India under performed from day one and its the multiplex business in these parts which is biggest disappointment.

    • i think raees isn’t even doing 20cr nett in second week.to put into prespective, dangal did 112 cr nett in second week.i think even second weekend was also abt 68cr nett.

  90. Kaabil (Hindi) had a low second weekend of 11.75 crore nett apprx which has taken its total to 77.50 crore nett apprx. The growth over the weekend was decent and better than Raees but the collections are low and with under 78 crore nett in 12 days the film is not going anywhere.

The problem for Kaabil is not the second weekend but the first day collections. The film was crushed by Raees with just 8 crore nett coming on day one and that is where it lost any chance it did. The reports had to be good to survive that sort of start and here the were mediocre which did not show when it was a holiday but on normals day the collections went down to report levels. The business of Kaabil till date is as follows.

First Week – 65,74,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,50,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

    Sunday – 5,25,00,000

    Second Weekend – 11,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 77,49,00,000 apprx

The second weekend business of the film is very similar to Raees and it may finish the second week with a slightly higher number than Raees but that 44 crore nett lead for Raees over the extended first week will stay. Kabil may be able to cut it down by a crore or two by the end of its run but thats about it.

  92. the last major Johar release and now a major SRK one will combine for something like 230 cr. Salman gets 200 in a Barjatya flop. How times have changed. There’s a reason one should have some humility in life but especially so in a roller coaster business like the movies. This applies to the fans also. I remember all the excessive things SRK fans used to say all those years ago. Today people are saying he’s in Akshay’s league or whatever (by the way I don’t agree with this at all). Even more sober voices know there’s a gulf between him and Salman/Aamir. Once when Aamir was getting success after Lagaan both SRK and his fans would say ‘yeah but who has the biggest grossers?’. Things change and when you fail it’s easy for people to ridicule you. It’s not a question of whether the criticism or the ridicule is deserved or not. But it’s symptomatic. Of course human nature being what it is people still don’t realize this. Once Johar would have the most smug things to say about his films and so on, he and those like him didn’t have the time of day for anyone not called SRK (recently in an interview Johar even admitted that he thought Aamir was finished after DCH or whatever it was.. this was Aamir post-Lagaan, not even Salman). Today he’s reduced to saying ‘I always knew my film couldn’t do more than 100’, today he has to praise Salman at the drop of a hat (or Aamir). Again no one learns. We see some other fans doing the same at the moment for their favorites.

    • Its not just Johar, many thought Aamir was finished during the 3-4 years break he took between DCH and MP for personal reasons. Lagaan and DCH were landmark movies, but at BO Lagaan was just a Hit (not a Blockbuster like Gadar) and DCH was only a metro-Hit. So those who count only Blockbusters failed to understand the impact and consequences that Lagaan and DCH were going to have later in his career.

MP when it came took a bumper opening (its a different matter that it didnt sustain). But after that he had thoroughly reaped the fruits of his labor in Lagaan and DCH.

Btw, I consider Akshay a major star (not in the league of Aamir/Salman, but he is right there after them). Comparing SRK to Akshay was a way to say that he is still a major star around, but hardly in the top level anymore.

      Like

      • MP was just like Raees or Dilwale. It’s opening showcased Aamirs star power that he had accrued due to Lagaan and DCH. Even though MP fizzled, any keen BO observer should’ve by then realized that Aamir had arrived finally to the top3. And ever since MP released, SRK never delivered another clean HGOY. (There is confusion betn OSO and D2). And since 2008, the picture became crystal clear with Ghajini comprehensively beating RNBDJ. In fact AK was a clear #1 since then, at least until Sallu joined the party with his resurgence after Dabang. And yet even Sallu has not been able to beat AK benchmark records which keep increasing the bar higher since Ghajini.
However, most SRK fans continued to keep their blinders on all the way even after disasters such as Fan. They kept finding excuses for every hit since RDB, constantly berating, undermining and abusing Aamir. But the #s always proved the Ranking. Its mighty amusing to see excuses for Fan or even JaiHo, but no quarter is given by the same folks to Talaash. And Talaash remains the only slight under-performer (had it made 5-6 more crores and crossed 100cr, nobody wouldve criticized it) in this Bull Run of Aamir since RDB.

        Liked by 2 people

    • well said – btw some interesting observations:
      – Aamir has stopped attending the awards whereas SRK went for an overkill by hosting and dancing and cutting some cheap jokes year after year – he thought that this will make him more popular or whatever….
      – Aamir didn’t fall for Thussad’s wax museum stuff
      – Aamir didn’t attend Kapil Sharma or Big Boss kind of shows when every other star including SRK/Sallu keep going there
      – He avoided romance in Dangal as script did not demand it (VV Chopra is crazy when he says Aamir wasn’t the reason here for its succes – without him Dangal wouldn’t have done even 50 cr forget anything more)
      – Aamir has been continuously trying newer directors and newer scripts whereas SRK has started doing too late and he looks so jaded now in films

I think Sallu has kept his physique alright and he knows that ppl will accept him only in certain roles – so that leaves a huge gap between Aamir and the rest of the actors – I think BO wise it is Sallu but variety-wise I will put Akki on no 2 spot

TZH or tubelight ,one of them surely will do 300cr and that will put another misery to srk ..

        • Also have to agree that with SRK being a distant third and Akki being a close fourth makes the number game interesting. Akki – if he gets two reasonably big hits can legitimately claim to be No 3 or at least jointly hold that position with SRK. I just don’t see why not, esp after the poor showing of Raees. When I saw the movie, i expected it to be a clean hit, given the buzz and the terrific initial. The content is not great, but it’s not poor either. Earlier, I didn’t think Diwale was particularly bad either. SRK has a wider and bigger fan following than Ranbir and Akshay (his immediate next competition) which guarantees a minimum initial, but when it comes to the neutral audience, all three are on the same level now.

He does not elicit the same kind of loyalty and unqualified praise he commanded from folks like Adi, Johar, Farah and a whole lot of hangers on. Since all of them specialise in a certain kind of genre – romance, song and dance – sticking with SRK is not feasable anymore. The whole genre in its conventional avatar has reached a sell by date and it is no surprise that Farah, Adi and SRK are all struggling. Karan Johar being the astute one realised which way the wind was blowing and has correctly identified that his cinema has to change. He still isn;t everything right, but every now and then, he gets a decent hit through his production house. Last year, both ADHM and Kapoor and Sons added to his reputation as a venturesome producer-director.

        • Why bother Rajesh Khanna still..Poor guy he had just 7 years at the top and never got back..we can find better examples to compare with him!

The more valid comparison is with Amitabh bachchan..I remember, when I was small, how when each of his film came out, it was touted to be the big comeback of bachchan..and nothing worked except Khuda gawah to an extent. I am reminded of that when some comments here say how SRK fans are hoping for a big one with each film of his..

And of course, bigb had an injury in between and then a failed career as an MP also..

And during this comeback period, he looked awful…it was a pain to see him romancing on the screen to be honest..

I just hope that SRK career doesn’t turn out the same way..since bachchan never got back to the position he was before. The villain was no one else, the time, age, took over and he couldnt go on being the same kind of hero any longer.

Imo, Raees is a good step..nobody faulted his acting or looks in this. Maybe late starting on the so called ‘acting’ path the other two khans are going..but surely, SRK is the more ‘gifted’ in that dept, as we all know!

On the topic of super stardom, different eras can have different measures of it..it not the same now as it was 20 years ago, or another 20 years ago.

It is also not a podium somewhere imaginary, where actors stand in 1,2,3 positions according to their box office results..it is more likely to be measured in the impact any star had on the audience for a considerable period, consistently..

And in that count, it definitely is Shah Rukh Khan who had that kind of impact from when he came on the screen upto now..after the Bachchan era. And this is a fact whether anybody despise it or not.

That reign was more consistency then what you see now with Aamir and Salman. Since then he’s had 1 big year in India (07). Overseas he’s held well but the infamous top 20 hits predominantly SRK dominated are being wiped out systematically by Aamir mainly and then Salman. No one can rewrite history, SRK was there first. I remember his amazing foothold in places like Austria and Germany. But the money makers of China are outgrossing SRK films WW excluding India. Since 08, Aamir and Salman have done one on SRK.

But because of his history, one cannot write him off as he still has an initial. And now he’s found a calculator too.

  93. Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ won’t release in Pakistan

    PTI | Updated: Feb 6, 2017, 07.46 PM IST

    HIGHLIGHTS
Pakistan’s censor board blocks Shah Rukh Khan-Mahira Khan starrer “Raees” for release in the country
Board finds film’s content and theme ‘objectionable’

KARACHI: Pakistan’s censor board has not cleared Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan-Mahira Khan starrer “Raees” for release in the country after finding the film’s content and theme objectionable.
“The portrayal of Muslims is negative and the film’s content undermines Islam, and a specific religious sect, (while also) portraying Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists,” an official source in the censor board said.
The distributors of “Raees”, Hum Films had last week submitted the film to the censor board for clearance to release in the Pakistani cinema halls after the government allowed screening of latest Bollywood movies last week.
A official with Hum Films declined to comment and said so far they had not got any official word from the censor board about banning “Raees.”
The lifting of the unofficial ban followed the release of a flow of latest Bollywood movies including “Kaabil” and “Ae Dil Hai Muskhil.”
“‘Raees’ will not release in Pakistan according to a decision taken by the censor board today,” the source told PTI.
“It shows Muslims in very negative light and could lead to reactions from different sects and it is unsuitable for public screening.”
Another source said that CBFC chairman Mobashir Hasan had backed the censor board members in their decision.

    • I see how Pakistan might find the film objectionable, given it does portray the Muslim community represented through Raees as being involved in illegal business and being a terror suspect. Given the Islamaphobia and the obvious issues around Islam-based terror activities, this is not the kind of film they necessarily feel good about projecting even to their own public.

This is not to suggest the film is particularly bold or plucky. In fact, the opposite.

I wonder if Mahira was chosen keeping in mind Pak collections. That has come a cropper now. Everything just going wrong for a film that had the best pre release buzz i have seen in a long time.

    • Good I’m glad. Serves SRK right by trying to play politics. No doubt mahira was chosen for this reason. Her role was so basic, any newcomer could’ve done it. Actually the Jolly LLB 2 trailer played in theaters before the movie which has Huma Qureshi and hindsight she would’ve been perfect in Raees too. Or Tabu. Even the overseas BO of Raees is nothing spectacular so hopefully SRK doesn’t play identity/religious politics again because it failed here…

  94. A lot of studios follow boxofficeindia.com for figures, where numbers are sometimes 20 to 25 per cent lower than what the producers claim a lot of times. A distributor, who didn’t want to be named, told TOI, “BoxofficeIndia.com has authentic numbers, most from the fraternity follow this when tracking one another’s films. But when it comes to their own films, they track the sites that show inflated numbers.”
The disparity in box-office numbers can even be seen in the case of recent big releases, ‘Raees’ and ‘Kaabil’. According to Boxofficeindia.com, Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ collected approximately Rs 1,10,05,00,000 in 9 days. However, according to Bollywoodhungama.com, the same film was reported to have collected Rs 122.36 crore at the end of Week One. For ‘Kaabil’. Boxofficeindia.com reported that the film had earned approximately Rs 65,74,00,000 in 9 days. In sharp contrast, Bollywoodhungama.com reported that Hrithik Roshan’s film garnered Rs 90.55 crore in the same span.

Such disparity was even seen in the case of Diwali release ‘Shivaay’. While Bollywoodhungama.com reported that the lifetime collections of the Ajay Devgn-starrer were Rs 100.33 crore, Boxofficeindia.com reported that it had earned Rs 84,83,50,000 (Total Nett).
India makes the maximum number of films in a year, more than any film industry in the world. Isn’t it time the film industry gets together and comes out with authentic figures for the sake of its audience who they are answerable to?

Industry needs Akshay as his model is very crucial for industry to survive in such difficult times where only 10 to 12 films becoming clean hits with more than 200 releases in a year & out of these 10, Akshay has 3 this year!! He is mixing it up very well by not sticking to one specific genre as he used to do earlier by doing just comdies.

It is pretty obvious now that BOI has the most authentic numbers in the business. There numbers for Dangal match the producers numbers (and no one doubts it). There numbers for Raees and Kaabil are below and way below (in that order) the producers numbers and no one (outside of Red Chillies and Filmkraft) believes that the producers numbers are accurate. They do write some inane articles from time to time but I don’t see how someone can doubt there numbers for movies released within the past 8 or 9 years. Now the reports are coming that the film industry follows them as well. I would love to know who runs this website but its probably a good thing that they should remain anonymous.

    • Doesn’t seem to be you’ve read all the numbers and commentary from sites like Bollywood arena, addatoday, Indicine. I’m not an advocate of their numbers or comments, but they all have displayed estimated figures. All their ballpark figures for Raees are close to BOI. BUT for Kaabil they are pretty much average of BOI and producers.

Don’t be surprised when they continue to provide estimated figures that they will not track correctly for Hrithik, Akshay, Ajay or Amitabh films. That’s my gut feeling.

Even Wikipedia quotes BOI. I doubt Wikipedia does any due diligence, they just go with status quo. Anyway you and few others deserve some commission for promoting BOI numbers, it seems without reading what these other sites are saying.

Just read and put their Kaabil numbers here and put BOI next to it. I’m not defending FKF. Just calling a spade a spade.

PK and Dangal, along with other big films used Rentrak I believe…I won’t endorse that as I know very little about it. Maybe that system of tracking is good.

And I have a USB stick fully loaded of all centre figures from 06-09 that can derive estimated figures and I am sure they undercut Krrish.

I know the fans of BOI here, but read the articles on Kaabil.

Knowing the owners – it could be anyone! It could be me! Or Satyam or You or Krish. Heck knows.

Just remember anyone can be fooled. The UK voted out of Europe, America voted for Trump. Perfectly smart people can misread or be misconstrued. I’m actually surprised at a few here.

You have 3 sources claiming Kaabil to be close to a midpoint between BOI and producers, yet all of the pro- BOI flag bearers turn a blind eye to it, their sources as they claim are not too dissimilar to BOI.

I’m open minded, even BOI can convince me one day.

Working in financial services, it’s very easy to
      A) start with a story or goal
      B) use numbers and backward induct assumptions to arrive at that figure
      C) hide those assumptions and build a story you want to satisfy what you want people to hear.

Heck anyone close enough to banking will know most recessional activity is through such misleading of numbers and fooling the naive.

Right now at face value if I take every data point for Kaabil, RR calculator and BOI calculator are outliers and Bollywood arena, addatoday and Indicine provide an average.

And BOI is open to more scrutiny then ever now as Indicine want to re-evaluate all their figures. You’ll get a long line of discrepancies with BOI. I’m sure the queue to work for BOI is still ripe but equally the opposite may happen.

It is better to just use everything available (if it matters to you) and make your own judgement.

One can sense a good film and good collections without reading too much. Akshay Kumar films have done well recently. BB is far superior to Sultan. Dangal’s murdered Sultan despite all things AGAINST.

Rajen wrote it first that BOI is dodgy on Kaabil and he’s bang on! He likes Hrithik, I don’t. Yes Rajen is a friend. But I don’t think it matters. Clearly doesn’t matter to those that know commentary at BOI is shite but have such belief on their numbers.

I have checked bollyarena and other websites and not really sure what the follow. They could be following BOI one day and producers the other day. I have never seen BOI follow the producers numbers (even in Dangal’s case where the numbers are pretty close). Also, all these new websites have popped up in the last year or so and BOI has been around for a little while. This should count for something. I wouldn’t compare BOI and indian box office to Brexit or Trump because those are world defining events and no matter how much I trust BOI, its still just a box office site. I have seen your model on NG and even here and see no issue there but you still got your territory numbers from Taran. I am not doubting your method…just that I can’t trust Taran with numbers.

I wouldn’t put much into Wikipedia following BOI as BOI is the most popular site for indian box office. Just like Wikipedia would follow boxofficemojo for US box office.

Also, why is everyone surprised that BOI’s numbers for Kaabil are off by so much? Same thing happened with Krrish and Papa Roshan was ridiculed everywhere for it. I don’t buy this argument for one minute that BOI is under reporting their number. For what? to show that Raees is winning? It’s not like their Raees numbers (or even commentary for that matter) will make SRK or RCE very happy. So much for their pro SRK bias.

Lastly, I wish I can get some commission from BOI or Aamir. These are the only two things I talk about on this forum.

You can always match it with Komal Nahta Film Information. Taran stopped posting numbers because he saw people like Jay can do better number crunching than trade analyst.
In fact at one time BOI was so insecure they started posting raw numbers.

There is no thing like Truth in Indian box office. If someone thinks BOI number is accurate then they are delusional. I do agree they have some consistency. But you have to take their numbers with pinch of salt on most accasions and sometimes with bucket of salt (OSO first week, HNY first day or the changing footfalls).

I think people unpredict what is possible. Now their predictions do go wrong, but there is more green than red in general. To be able to predict one must have some basis. I DO NOT ENDORSE INDICINE BTW. I’m just countering what you’re saying. All their predictions are before BOI has even posted a figure.

          Many things are possible;
          BOI is most authentic
          Producer is most authentic
These satellite sites have access to film information or trade guide (? If they still exist) and can become authentic
There is no such thing as authentic
Authentic is deciphering through all the sources and getting an overall picture of the story

To blankly say one is more than other without knowing their mechanism is very black and white view. None of the people saying this would put serious money on it! Let alone their lives!!!

Because how can you prove it?

Even when I wrote columns I tracked BOI. It’s basic rules of business, you follow any source and distinguish outliers and use judgement to benchmark against a good average.

As munna pointed out I used what I would call basic extrapolation techniques, but for some that would be WOW, others it could understandable, others could easily conjure up better things and add conjectures or huge disclaimer to my methods.

Heck even I could. Correlation, modelling, forecasting, sum of squares, linear regression (zzzzzz as I write this), statistical tools, means, standard deviation, variance, confidence intervals, normal distribution curves, hypothesis testing, spearman’s rank etc etc are all things I studied and could use to get or refine more precision. It’s not how a Saturday morning should start!

Bollywood arena admittedly said they track BOI. This to me means something different then to you. To you and others it means they authenticate BOI and plus or minus 0.5 CR here or there to perpetuate themselves as distinguishable and another authentic source. But I interpret tracking as 1) I have a mechanical way to predict 2) I am uncertain and lack confidence in that method 3) I’ll compare it to something else off the shelf and if I’m in range I’m happy 4) By continually doing this overtime I learn, refine and become more accurate.

Btw as Marcus points out a lot of these sites predict daily collections and they are not widely off until FKP OR RCE arrive. They must have sources and no one can tell me for sure who has the best, cleanest and most sound method of box office numbers… Whoever is frankly don’t know what they are talking about or what propaganda they are endorsing.

To be blunt anyone authenticating BOI, IBOS, Jayshah, Indicine, Addatoday, Bollywood arena, producers really are just adding a huge disclaimer to their own judgement. I absolved myself from this list as I had no disclaimer, I was transparent. You took it or you left it.

But realistically the only authentic number is when the expected outcome = actual outcome. The latter is never disclosed by private companies, public ones I presume have an obligation to give some details. The tax man is another source, but even here big companies like Starbucks can be clever in disguising their tax obligations.

It’s a murky world. If one used prescriptive nice language like BOI is directionally correct than fine as that’s expected outcome language. But when one says it is the most accurate or ‘spot on’ one is entering actual outcome territory.

BOI isn’t even Hawkeye or ball tracking, it’s more like the umpire raising it’s finger. Even the line judges in tennis are more precise consistently. BOI is like a football referee (read soccer you yanks), making dubious decisions every week! And don’t get me started or verdict changes! LOL! How is it possible to make one verdict many years ago and have a new verdict now? And people believe this bubblegum website!

        • Very aptly put Jay! No point in saying one is better than another. Its best to look at all the sources and get a rough idea abt whats really going on. One can then arrive at a range in which the actual collections may be in. Indian BO will remain a mess until everything is computerised, which is far far away. Without infrastructure even agencies like rentrak cant help the situation here.

    • Your first line is assumption. Even Bollyarena and addatoday daily estimates before the official release were near the Dangal numbers. That doesn’t mean they are right.

Why the numbers are so well rounded? 15 (or 15.5) crore. not 14.98 or 15.02 crore. I know they are estimates but where is the precision (if they are doing mathematics by any mean).

I think where BOI does manipulation or adjusting is daily numbers. They may have say .25-0.50 crore less or more, so next day they may add/subtract it. In end it will be near producers numbers. But if you don’t do that your error will keep adding and you will be far from producer’s number. It is where they have choice to do or not.

The reason numbers are not THAT accurate is because BOI is not rentrak. I don’t know if there will EVER be a time when indian box office numbers will be as accurate as the one in US. Anyway no more blabbering from me, both have underperformed but are setting Dangal standards combined according to producers!

    1. Some Agency needs to connect with the Central Excise and State Level Tax Departments to verify per film earnings from the Taxation of the movies. These are publicly available figures but not sure without RTI can be released or not. When we will know how much Tax a particular movie collected in its run, that should give us a clear picture.

    2. How can producers say they earned 100 crores and not be scrutinized by Tax Agency for the ET ? Unless to boost their ego they are also paying Taxation to back these excessive numbers.

I saw that everyone talking about Rentrak which is now part of ComScore, its centralized and integrated. Its easier for them to integrate PVR, INOX , Satyam etc the chains which have Printed Ticketing and Computerized collections. For Single Screen who still sell cheap quality hand written tickets, there’s lot of room to fudge numbers.

They change their numbers too often throughout the day to be taken seriously. And finally all their numbers are closer to BOI

Whatever RGV is getting for this movie (theatre, sattelite etc…), Bachchan should demand 50%.

The order follows a report by a court-appointed three-member committee of experts, comprising Senior Advocates R.N. Dhorde and V.J. Dixit and medico Dr Prakash Kanade, petitioner-lawyer Ajaykumar Waghmare said from Nanded.

The committee viewed the film last Friday in Aurangabad and submitted its two-page report stating that a particular scene is “defamatory to the lawyers’ profession and would be contempt of court”.

Bombay HC orders four cuts, fresh certification for ‘Jolly LLB 2’
They added that the visual or words also involved “defamation of the body of lawyers and undermines the dignity of lawyers and courts”.

After taking the report on record, the judges ordered that the scenes objected to by the committee should be deleted and that the CBFC should re-certify the film, Waghmare said.

“This is a historic and significant order concerning any film in the country. It is also a lesson to the CBFC which certified the film during the pendency of the PIL, indicating some malpractices,” Waghmare told IANS.

The scenes ordered to be deleted include the ones in which a judge is shown crouching behind the dias, hurling of a shoe at a judge and an objectionable dialogue.

The lawyers representing the filmmakers agreed to the necessary cuts/modifications.

The film’s producers, Fox Star Studios, had challenged before the Supreme Court the January 27 ruling of the Bombay High Court to appoint the three-member.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to put on hold the screening of ‘Jolly LLB 2’ before the three-member panel and allowed the committee to preview the film and ascertain whether the said scenes denigrated the judiciary in any manner.

Slated for release on February 10, ‘Jolly LLB 2‘ is a courtroom drama starring Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla, and is written and directed by Subhash Kapoor.

Raees grossed 1.50 crore nett on its second Monday to take its total to 13 crore nett in four days of the second week and 123 crore nett all together. The film will cross the business of last years Republic Day week release Airlift today and despite an under performance that will make it the highest grossing film released in the month of January. It has a lot to with the fact that big films don’t really release in January or even in the first half of the year.

The film caught up with Kaabil again on Monday as Raees has more single screens and they tend to collect better on Monday and the shortfall it has in multiplexes gets covered by the single screens. The business of Raees till date is as follows.

First Week – 1,10,05,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,75,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

    Sunday – 4,75,00,000

    Monday – 1,50,00,000

    Second Weekend – 13,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,23,05,00,000 apprx

The second week of the film looks to be heading towards 17 crore nett which will take the film to around 127 crore nett and a final total in the vicinity of 130 crore nett. Dilwale release last Christmas grossed 140 crore nett over that holiday period with a clash. .

HNY was also there. And with solo release I think his movies like Dilwale, Raees etc can still easily gross around 160-180crrs. But Salman and Aamir are in altogether different league now and I don’t see anyone reaching that level in next few years at least. Among newcomers Ranbir is struggling to give 100crrs and Ranveer’s movies only work with Slb+Deepika combo.

Now for Reema Kagti’s biopic Gold where he reprises the role of India’s legendary hockey striker, captain and coach of yesteryear, Balbir Singh Sr, the actor will wear a dhoti-kurta in the entire film. The period drama is about India winning the first Olympic medal as an independent country in 1948, at the 14th Olympiad in London. Akshay has worn a dhoti-kurta in his earlier films, but this is the first time he will be wearing the outfit throughout a film. Shooting for the film starts mid this year.

Kaabil (Hindi) grossed 1.50 crore nett on its second Monday to takes it to total to 79 crore nett. Its not a bad drop considering that it grossed 4 crore nett last Monday which is a 62.50% drop. Although the drop is not bad the collections definitely are and the film is going nowhere. The only achievement it will have if it can be called that is that it will beat the collections of Raees in week two but it will only be around 50 lakhs nett plus.

The second week for Kaabil is heading for around 17.50 crore nett which will take its two week total to 83.25 crore and from there it may add another 3-4 crore nett for a 86-87 crore nett finish. The business of Kaabil till date is as follows.

First Week – 65,74,00,000 (nine days)

    Friday – 2,50,00,000

    Monday – 1,50,00,000

    Second Weekend – 13,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 78,99,00,000 apprx

Kaabil was also released in Tamil and Telugu and will finish its run with around 3 crore nett which is a similar ratio to Dangal as per its Hindi business at around 3.5%. Both films have grossed around 3.5% of its Hindi version in Tamil and Telugu but obviously Kaabil at much lower levels.

@kamaalrkhan this is was my response when KRK saw trailer of Sarkar 3, liked it and predicted it to be a HIT !! lets hope so !!??

Amitabh Bachchan’s last release Pink became a surpise hit and he moved on to his next – Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkaar. Most of the principal shooting for the film is complete and the team has cut out a trailer as well.

While it’s not known when the theatrical promo will be launched, someone has already watched the trailer. And you won’t believe who is one of the first people to see it! KRK!

Yes, Big B and Kamaal Rashid Khan’s Twitter exchange proves that KRK was one of the first few to watch the trailer and not just that, he even predicted that the film will be a huge HIT.

KRK put out a screenshot of the text message Big B sent to him, thanking him for his kind prediction and soon enough, Amit ji tweeted explaining the context of the text. Read all of it here:

Dangal has crossed 3MA$ in Aus,has beaten PK by leaps and bounds with 45%.Raees is at 1.1MA$ at the moment.

If u can analyse the analogy of overseas circuits with domestic circuit, then u can infer the following.
1.NA behaves more or less like Mumbai.both r not only the biggest circuits,Aamir is clear no.1 in both. Both circuits decide the overall fate in domestic/overseas.
2.Gulf behaves like bihar.Massy films do well there and sallu rules in both though Gulf is comparatively a bigger circuit and sallu’s dominance is lesser in gulf.
3.Aus behaves like Mysore. Both r classiest circuits and Aamir is like 1-5 in both, his movies tend to outperform in both circuits.
4.UK behaves like Delhi/UP.Star power works in both and SRK rules in UK,though same can’t be said abt Delhi/UP at the moment.

Earlier, Salman had already announced the release date of the film, ie. 11th August, but now the official name of the film has been declared. The film which was tentatively titled ‘The Ring’ has been now renamed to ‘Rehnuma’.

The word, ‘Rehnuma’ means guide or leader in Urdu, and will have SRK essaying the role of one as well. The film has been shot in Prague and deals with Anushka’s character who is on a mission to unearth a lost engagement ring. Even Aamir in one of his interviews emphasized that there was no financial losses involved with MP. Of course that does not make it a success, but calling it a flop is going too far.

From Lagaan till Dangal, Aamir has not delivered any flops.

MP and Talaash were underperformers. And DCH was a metro-hit only. Apart from that everything was clean hits that went out of the park – Lagaan (Hit), RDB (Superhit), Fanaa (Superhit), TZP (Superhit), Ghajini (ATBB), 3 Idiots (ATBB), Dhoom 3 (ATBB), PK (ATBB) & Dangal (ATBB).

Its a stellar arc and can beat any arc of any superstar for any duration if one considers both the quality content and BO results of most of these films.

Intolerance is growing in the country and a “select few” assume that they represent the masses, the Samajwadi Party MP says.

The alleged assault on Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his crew on the sets of “Padmavati” figured in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan saying the incident has threatened creativity.

Raising the issue in the House during the Zero Hour, she said intolerance is growing in the country and a “select few” assume that they represent the masses, “under certain political patronage,” and take law and order in their hands.

They have no respect for constitutional values or the law of the land.

Ms. Bachchan (SP) said the film fraternity, which strives to bring fictional stories to people through creativity for the sole purpose of entertainment with some moral and social message, has been the “soft target for these anti-social elements.”

“Sometime they are threatened, sometime films are not allowed be screened, sets are vandalised and sometimes it takes a violent turn as it happened in Jaipur recently,” she noted.

“…Sets of Padmavati, where Rajput Karni Sena not only physically assaulted the Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but also damaged the expensive film equipments,” she said.

Mr. Bhansali, she said, is a renowned director who had made great films and added that he had also staged the “same subject of Padmavati” as an opera in a Paris theatre in 2008.

Ms. Bachchan further said, neither the State government, nor the Centre has condemned the incident or taken action against the culprits.

“What message are we sending to the film fraternity which is one of the most important and vibrant ambassador of the country. Creativity should not be subjected to such treatment,” she said and demanded strong action against those involved in the incident.

Ms. Bachchan said the film fraternity has long been fighting the menace with little or no support from the government.

The film industry creates large number of employment opportunities and such disruptions, she said, affects the earnings of the sector.

Last month, Mr. Bhansali was allegedly roughed up by members of a Rajput community group, who also stopped the shooting of the film by damaging the set at Jaigarh Fort, alleging that the director was “distorting facts” in the movie which is about Alauddin Khilji’s obsession with Rani Padmavati.

  137. Doesn’t the differences in numbers among the sources usually happen for movies which are not rejected but do not start with a hit business.
For all other movies – rejected or Hit and above, such controversies rarely breaks.

Raees is atleast a success now in all sources.
Kaabil is atleast a success now in all sources minus 1. (BOI)

    • Wow moment for me. Naveen, great observation. Took 10 years to agree with you but better late than never. Obviously this below average/average/overflow/semihit categorisation is very unnecessary and confusing. The average guy on the street doesn’t talk in this robotic trade talk language. They probably say flop hai (flop), theek hai (average/ timepass), hit hai or chalenge (hit, long run), blockbuster hai (blockbuster film). The last time I heard overflow was for a toilet!

    • I think SRK grossed too much for a blockbuster this time.. had it been around 100 this would have been possible.

As for Hrithik he either matched Piku or gave ZNMD a run for its money. Either way huge achievement.

Not losing money can be termed as a success i guess. Both are average grossers with great display of BO reporting from the producers. Lets leave it at that and move on.

  138. Manisha Koirala to play Nargis Dutt in Sanjay Dutt biopic

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has begun work on his next venture – Sanjay Dutt’s biopic. The film that will see Ranbir Kapoor essaying the role of Bollywood’s bad boy, will have a number of famous faces as part of the project. The latest addition to the star cast happens to be one of Sanjay’s earlier co-stars, Manisha Koirala. The actress has been roped in to play Dutt’s mother Nargis.

In a recent interview, the director revealed the primary reason for getting her on board. Hirani said that since Manisha is a cancer survivor and had lived through the trying times, she would be able to “identify with Nargis’ fight”. The actress also happens to have been treated at the same cancer facility in New York where Nargis was treated. The biopic is expected to release in December 2017.

Sanjay Dutt who was very close to his dad wanted to play the most iconic character of the film.

Sanjay who gave 200 hours of recording as a basic matter for the biopic, didn’t want the attention to be divided between the real and the reel Dutt.

The film also features Sonam Kapoor as Sanjay’s earlier love interest, Vicky Kaushal as his friend from the US, Anushka Sharma as a journalist and Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt. Manisha joins the cast as Nargis, Sanjay’s mother, whose death in 1981 from pancreatic cancer, affected him deeply.

This seems a good piece and Dangal in some ways has given an opportunity to big stars ( who are aiming only for big number ) to change course and not worry about the “add-on” of commercial cinema. Infact with Raees it’s also clear any dilutions may now have adverse effect and the minor gains from opening with ‘ flavor enhancers ‘ will be momentary and eventually dwindle if wom gets poor due to such concoction.

The dry track of Bajrangi Bhaijaan was also one such confidence building moment but more so for Salman since until then he was associated with his signature supplements. In this respect ‘Tubelight’ will reveal a bit more and it seems Kabir may have pushed the envelope a tad more.

Aamir Has Given New Aspect to Mainstream Cinema: Karan Johar

“….The honcho of Dharma Production said the 51-year-old actor is the most intelligent artist of India.
“I don’t give a tag to anyone. The only thing I can say about him that he is the most outstanding producer and actor in the Indian film industry.”

“Dangal is a complete Hindustani film…The way the film has been presented is outstanding and has emotionally touched everyone’s heart. I don’t think there has been a better film in the last decade than Dangal,” said Karan.

    • If you look at Rentrak number , looking at precision you can say that they are estimates. When you end up at 45.10 instead of 45.11 or 45.09, it is an estimate.

Also, I just saw Film information raw numbers for Raaes and Kaabil. The ratio was 70% (Kaabil/Raaes). If BOI is saying 110 for Raees then Kaabil should be approx. 78.

Buzz is that the film is expected to hit the theaters in 2018. Considering the major casting coup, one can only imagine the film’s budget and also what a mark it will leave at the box office, with biggies like Rajini, Aamir and Mohanlal in one film.

The film will be shot in 3 languages, Tamil Telugu and Hindi. Reportedly, the film’s budget is around 400 crores.

You Asked It – Has Dangal Beaten The Footfalls Of Bajrang

    Q. Why are the figures of dubbed versions not included in the collections of the website?
    A. These figures you will see in box office note on the page for the film. The figures are tracked for Hindi films and the dubbed versions are not Hindi films, many even have different names. A Hindi film dubbed into Tamil and Telugu will do around 1-5% of its Hindi version depending on the position of the local releases down. It can be done for every film. There are also a lot of comparisons on the site and it does not work if these figures are added as with big film some choose to dub while others do not. Also the most important reason is films have to be kept separate and taking these dubbed mean you have to bring regional films into the equation. When Dangal finishes it run is a week or so then we will do a few charts which will make it clearer.

    Q. Has Dangal beaten the footfalls of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and what are they?
    A. Yes has edged past and will be published at the end of its run in a few weeks time.

    Q. The last week has seen manipulated figures being talked by everybody including main newspapers but a big box office website like yours has not even mentioned it?
    A. Its not the first time it has happened and won’t be the last. It happens practically every other week with some film or the other to different levels. There is not much to comment on and our bit can be seen here. When something happens often and then you get up and comment after years the first question by people surfing the site is why now and assume there is something behind it. The main industry people know the correct figures as the industry can’t work with fake figures. Today 70-80% of the collections of a Hindi film are there to see at a theatre level which was not the case ten years back so the public and media can be given any number but the industry will get theatre level collections and know the real number irrespective of any other numbers going around.

    Q. Why was the opening of Kaabil was so low. Is it because just of Raees as it it was opening which killed the film
    A. Raees was one reason but not the only one. The promos, music and production values had to be much better to stand up in a clash. Even without clash these type of revenge thrillers find it tough going as only Mumbai and a couple of other circuits really works unless the music is huge or it has a superstar at the top of his game who can convert the audience outside Mumbai and others.

After a series of action films and out-and-out comedies, Ajay Devgn’s next will be a contemporary rom-com to be written & produced by Luv Ranjan. A quirky take on urban relationships, the film will have Ajay in an edgy space that resonates with today’s youth.

  149. The big clash between Kaabil and Raees is another clash where the films have not lived upto expectations with both films under performing. Raees has got away with it due to an excellent start and is a SEMI HIT while Kaabil is a failure and will be BELOW AVERAGE / FLOP depending on final share. Either way it makes little difference as its not a success. Raees also has a huge pot from Overseas to helps its cause and the Overseas share will in the 35-40 crore range. The combined figures will be a little better than the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil v Shivaay clash where the combined total was 190 crore nett and here it will go to 215 crore nett. But that was Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor and here it is Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan so a 25 crore nett gap is not much. Even the gap is due to Raees which will have a 25 crore nett higher total than the winner of that clash Ae Dil Hai Mushkil while Kaabil and Shivaay will be in same range.

Raees is another film which has not grossed like a Shahrukh Khan film but it keeps his unbelievable clash record intact. He is the star with probbaly the most clashes but comes out on top every time irrespective of content. There were some defeats in the earlier films but he was not a star then. The only setback came in 2001 when Indian beat Asoka but at that time Sunny Deol in the right film was always going to be tough nut to crack for anyone. The clashes include big victories against rivals Aamir Khan in 1995 (Ram Jaane v Akele Hum Akele Tum) and Salman Khan (Don v Jaan-E-Mann). In 2015 the Dilwale v Bajirao Mastani clash is seen as a defeat but if the wider picture is seen with Worldwide numbers its a comfortable victory for Dilwale and this was only due to the clout of Shahrukh Khan as the film was not liked. Even in India it would have been much closer if the intolerance debate did not happen at time of release which cost the film around 15% business. Shahrukh Khan has probably defeated every other major star out there in a clash.

Kaabil is a another downer for Hrithik Roshan and now the next film is very important as its not around the corner so when it comes it has to be a big one. In 2006 he was about to be undisputed superstar and leave the Khan’s behind after Krrish and Dhoom 2 but doing poor films like Jodhaa Akbar and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa cost him badly as Salman Khan reinvented and made the action space his own and there was no looking back for him.

The difference in stardom is so much that films like Dhoom 2 and Krrish did not open that much lower than Kaabil despite more than 60% less screens and half the ticket rates. Despite this they were just 25% less than Kaabil on the first day.

  150. “Aamir Khan did no promotion for Dangal, still delivered biggest hit” – Naseeruddin Shah

“This whole business of promotions is over rated. To my mind it is nonsensical. It is a waste of money,” said Naseeruddin Shah Sahab in a Bollywood Hungama exclusive video interview with Content Head Broadband Faridoon Shahryar. “Aamir did no promotion for Dangal. He didn’t go anywhere. It is the biggest hit, not only of the year but of history. So what do you gain by drawing thousands of hysterical people to look at you. I think these actors enjoy doing this that’s why they do it. Blowing up that much money is no big deal for them,” stated Naseer Sahab in his trademark no nonsense style taking a jibe at the trend of too-much-in-the-face-promotions instead of quality promotions.

Naseer Sahab went on to add, “I don’t believe promotions can make a film successful. The film is successful on its own merit. Promotions can make it more successful perhaps. But promotions can’t convert a bad movie into a good one.” He substantiated his point by adding, “When A Wednesday was made there were no promotions done. There was hardly a poster in town. There were black and white posters of me and Anupam Kher, not the heartthrob kind of guys. The movie did not do well in the first week. It picked up from the second week.”

Naseer Sahab has made a solid point at a time when mushrooming of Media has resulted in too much of content dissemination (many a times harping on sensational ‘juicy’ stories). The need of the hour is to identify the right platforms and journalists that add value instead of carpet bombing that only tires out the stars.
