Jolly LLB 2 Does Well In First Week
    Friday 17 February 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 has done well in its first week with collections of 72.25 crore nett apprx. The film picked up very well on Saturday and Sunday after an average start. The holds over the weekdays are fair with the Valentines Day collections making the weekdays look good.

The film has primarily fared well in the North with East Punjab and Delhi NCR recording good numbers. The business in UP where the film is set is average with single screens in the state not doing well. This has been the pattern with Akshay Kumar starrers in the last year in that single screens have not performed including in a film like Housefull 3. If this continues a big grosser will be tough as till date Rowdy Rathore remains the highest grosser of Akshay Kumar and that was released almost five years ago.

The collections on the second Friday will determine if its a HIT or not although the business is unlikely to reach the number of Raees which is the biggest grosser of 2017 till date. This again illustrates the domination of the Khans as Akshay Kumar is the next best bet after the Khans and here a decent Akshay Kumar film will stay below a poor Shahrukh Khan film whih released in clash with another film.

The gap in stardom is no way that much between the Khan and Akshay Kumar but the problem is limited appeal films for Akshay Kumar and nothing like a Rowdy Rathore or Welcome

    • BOI can say whatever they want… Jolly LLB 2 is enjoying very good patronage among movie goers esp in upper middle class families, not to suggest it is lesser for others. But esp this segment has come out and loved the film. This movie needed a holiday release as this customer segment is maximised then. Now with exam time etx, it already did fantabulous.
There is an ETC News video where Komal Nahta interviews Distributors regarding LLB 2 and how happy they were to get a Hit in the month they usually suffer losses. Will be grateful if someone can find that video and post it here.

  3. Current Box Office Ranking:

    1 Aamir Khan
2 Salman Khan (Can be clubbed with Aamir as joint No 1 but A movie like Dangal is a notch above)
3 SRK (falling; Opening is not enough now)
4 Akshay (Can be clubbed with SRK as joint No 3)

    1 Aalia
    2 Deepika
    3 Katrina

    • So basically your ranking in simpler terms is
      Aamir & Salman @1
      SRK & Akshay @2

I was wondering when your systematic list will creep Akshay as close to #1. When do we expect Akshay to be #1? Just tell us now as it will save everyone the ordeal of seeing this list and expected commentary. In fact just do it now. Save us the torture of a pre determined list.

      • Haha… Can’t see Akshay becoming No 1.
        Aside,
Why should there be a fan for No 1 actor only? I like Akshay for his hard work, dedication and humility. Ranking and all is good for gossips.
He is the only star who has shown that despite not being naturally talented, one can be still counted amongst the top by sheer hard work and discipline. That should be inspiring for everyone.

    • Before Dangal there was a huge gap between Salman and next – SRK and Aamir. What Dangal has done is reduce that gap and given Aamir an edge. It was an extraordinary movie.
However Salman is an extraordinary star. His stardom is beyond comparison.
I know it’s a bitter pill for Aamir Khan’s fans but sadly it’s true.

      • Amir Khan occupies 1-2

salman khan & srk joint 3rd
        akki 4th

        hritik 5th

        others 6th onwards

Amitabh is legend now and it would harsh to put in the number brackets.

amir khan will remain there for a while due to his content & quality films

salman depends on how tubelight & TZH turns out

akki will remain there and will decline like jeetendra did, just a saleable actor.

Hritik wll be same and decline in coming years

srk has reached his pinnacle and its downhill for him, unless he miraculously he been offered dilwale dulhaniyan 2..in a timezone of 1995/1996…declining.

If I were a punter I would say its 2 horse race still between amir & salman because the latter has 2 releases this year and surely those will benefit him..

  5. So, it is 90cr for Kaabil and 127cr for Raees, according to Nahta. BOI had Raees in that range but their total for Kaabil was and still is quite lower. Can it be that BOI have been under-reporting for Kaabil? Because even BO sources who have opted not to follow the Roshan’s collections are reporting collections quite higher than BOI’s for the latter.

As for Jolly LLB 2, it does look like a sure winner at the BO. The only problem for Akshay Kumar is that when you look at his line-up for this year, except for Robot 2.0, he has Toilet- Ek Prem Katha and Padman (the Balki movie). The latter two look like out-and-out multiplex deals. No wonder, single screens audience are not coming out for him too much these days. The last time a movie from him catered for that audience is Gabbar. It probably prevents him for getting universally accepted movies that translate into even bigger grossers.

It’s a pity because he is versatile enough and has the necessary volume of movies. But he does seem to refrain from doing those action-masala movies these days, while he certainly has the ability to pull if off quite well. Rowdy Rathod and Holiday were quite good in that respect.

    • I dont think it matters if Raees made 130 cr or 135 cr. Or whether Kaabil made 90 cr or 100 cr. The matter of fact is that for both films some distributors suffered losses. So BO verdict for both films is Flop.

One cant just call either of them as semi-hit or quarter-hit or some success just because you like the star in it. And if producer profits is the bar, then no film is ever a flop. With all the ancillary rights like satellite, music, dvd etc – seldom does any producer make losses.

Jolly LLB on the other hand will reach Akshay’s zone of 110-130 cr and be a clean hit. These days his choice of movies is much better than before and someday hopefully he will reap the benefits with somewhat bigger grossers. Anyways, with his volume he is doing more than ok. Within a span of 12-13 months he has delivered 4 hits/superhits.

Praising Salman will not make any difference for the present state of affairs. Boi analysis is always like this only. That is what we were saying so many times. What is new about it? • I hardly care for BOI commentry except that I take them as one of the voices.
      Here is my honest take-
Aamir fans should not get carried away by number game as Aamir himself is not playing. The likes of few here tries to put him in the race which actually he is not. Look at his choices and volume. Let him create magic on screen. He is like that player who plays one game to create glory. Those who are in race do not do this.
Box office race is run by SRK, Salman and Akshay to be honest. They are always in the game if you understand what I mean. Hrithik and Ranbir are also not playing the game though they like to be in it.
So this take of mine should not be considered as undermining Aamir.

Yes of course I am happy for Akshay. I can vouch that even he best of the writers here had not imagined that Akshay would be in the race for so long. That is Akshay’s victory. Personally I hope he remains in the race. Not to win but to keep going.

      • So u accept aamir is above number game.

        • Let me put it this way- Aamir is playing the game in his own terms. No one else is doing this.
In the wider games which common man understands and watches- Salman, SRK, Akshay are there… Each fighting it out. Here Salman is in a different sphere altogether where one can say that he is also playing another game, on his own terms.

Problem is you don’t have anything to do before Cheistmas 2018 as that’s when Aamir’s next releases. no wonder you will see the regular interventions by Other stars as your roadblock. And you know what- Salman is going to get a huge hit soon and will again create a golf between himself and others as before. 😂😂😂

As long as your coterie creates wonderful arguments, we would be there waiting to counter them if necessary or needed. By the way, why are you depending on Salman to create gulfs? You must have found a soulmate in livewire. Or you are building your own coterie by hitching to a Salman fan. We wont go away so easily.

        • Sanjana- looks at Jayshah’s replies and you will know he hardly does wonderful conversation when doing against anyone who thinks differently on Aamir Khan. Off late he was behaving but he again seems to have gone back to his elements.
You want to argue but you will be missed out because of the other Wolves in the gang.
Problem is almost all the Aamir fans don’t know how to argue. They are quite obnoxious and incorrigible. They whirl over like vultures to see who is talking about Aamir and then come in packs to show their vulnerability.
Additionally few write agenda îc comments laced with knowledge of cinema to bring down other stars.
In this debate on ranking , Salman came for me. Else I am happy with my Jolly. His next is anyway coming in three months. I post news of his movoes not to make the obnoxious gang see that movie. But for my enjoyment. I dont like pitching one star against another. That’s not me. That’s the Vulture Karni Sena of Aamir.

        • Naveen, get well soon. By blaming others by calling them vultures will not do. You are debasing the argument because you cant win against them properly. If Aamir is mentioned, it is natural that they would jump into the fray. Whats wrong with it? Why should they wait until another release of Aamir’s? Is not livewire bringing Salman in every argument? Is not Boi bringing the Khans and comparison?

  7. I think its laughworthy to compare Salman and Aamir. Both has two films on hand. But I doubt if Salman is even aware of TL or TZH’s story/script. Whereas Aamir is currently fine-tuning both the scripts of TOH and Salute. This itself shows the gulf that exists between these two stars.

One is happy to be a star. Other is happy to make good films. Enough said.

  8. Aamir’s ‘Salute’ would definitely qualify for a good choice if it were not one more outing on the nationalism theme. He is buying time to remain in good books after the faux pas in public. On top of that there is such an overdose of such movies and too many being made in a short span of time.

Anything about space shouldn’t just automatically be compared with Gravity and Interstellar because there is no competition on the scale and budget and may I dare say ‘vision’ ( inspite of aamir intuition and perception). I feel VFX here will at most be at the level of a PK with a short burst at the beginning and then at the end. Rest is going to be usual build up in a middle class environment to connect with general audience. I can bet whenever Aamir decides to talk about this movie he is going to refer to that one sequence which made him sign this movie. It’s that famous conversation, Rakesh Sharma had from space when he was asked by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from the from the space and he replied, Saare Jahan Se Achcha, (better than the whole world).

Its an iconic moment in any Indian’s life we were all mesmerized by these lines when we heard them.

Banks’ 1st bill would inspect social media postings of visa applicants
BRIAN FRANCISCO | The Journal Gazette

The first bill introduced by freshman Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, would require the Department of Homeland Security to review the social media activity of all foreign citizens seeking visas to enter the United States.

Banks announced Thursday he is introducing the Visa Investigation and Social Media Act of 2017, or VISA Act, in an attempt the strengthen the vetting process for immigration and travel visa applicants.

Homeland Security officials would be required to review all “publicly available social media activity” by visa applicants, such as Twitter messages, Facebook posts and photos, and YouTube videos, Banks said in a statement.

“We must have confidence that those entering our country do not intend us harm,” Banks said. “Directing Homeland Security to review visa applicants’ social media before granting them access to our country is common sense. Employers vet job candidates this way, and I think it’s time we do the same for visa applicants……”

  16. Really shocked with the blasts at Lal Shahbaaz Qalandar shrine in Sindh. When will this madness stop? Killing innocents just because they pray differently? What difference does it make whether people bow down, fold hands, kneel down, dance, stand straight, or lie prostate in reverence to a supernatural power? Every human has his/her own spiritual energy and own way to re-kindle that spiritualism in the quest to unite oneself to the great unknown. It is utter foolishness for anyone to condemn another human being just because they do not subscribe to their own version of reverence. When a nation cannot grieve loss of innocent lives, but tries to disingenuously find faults with the murdered, rather than loathe the murderers, that nation slowly but surely slips into disintegration.

  17. After last week’s solo release, this week we see the release of three different films viz. THE GHAZI ATTACK, RUNNING SHAADI and IRADA. But will these three films that have had rather low key promotions manage to find takers is the question.

Reports suggest that all three new releases have opened on dull note, while from the three THE GHAZI ATTACK has opened slightly better with occupancy rate being pegged at 10%. The other two films, RUNNING SHAADI and IRADA have opened to just 5% occupancy during morning shows. However, last week’s release, the Akshay Kumar starrer JOLLY LLB 2 continues to find audience support with a 20% occupancy rate.

On the whole, though JOLLY LLB 2 is expected to rule at the box office this weekend, THE GHAZI ATTACK that has received decent reviews is expected to perform better than the other release, emerging as the audience’s second choice at theatres. But, RUNNING SHAADI and IRADA will have to rely heavily on positive word of mouth.

Jolly LLB 2 has emerged the first hit of 2017 as it collected 3.50 crore nett on its second Friday and took its eight day total to 76 crore nett. The drop from day one is around 70% and the drop from Thursday is 20%. These ae fair holds. .

The second weed has chances to cross 15 crore depending on growth which should be huge on Saturday. It should cross the business of Kaabil before the weekend is out though will not reach the figures of Raees. Its looking a close of around 110 crore nett for the film at present. The business of Jolly LLB 2 till date is as follows.

    First Week – 72,50,00,000

    Friday (second) – 3,50,00,000

    Total – 76,00,00,000

The new releases faring poorly helped the film as it continued to easily dominate the box office especially in the North where it is on a very good run. In East Punjba it may be come the highest grossing Akshay Kumar film of all time. In Delhi / UP it should have also got there but UP has let it down though it is much better at the start of the second week.

The film is set in UP but until yesterday the market was under performing Punjab and NCR. This was mainly as UP has a big ratio of business from singls screens as compared to multiplexes in Punjab and NCR.

The new releases releases this Friday did not do well as Jolly LLB 2 dominated the box easily recording more than double the numbers of the new releases put together. The best of the lot was The Ghazi Attack which is a bilingual but also did not fare well in other languages as well as Hindi.

The only plus was that at least The Ghazi Attack managed some collections as compared to Irada and Running Shaadi. These two films can be written off already while thats not the case with The Ghazi Attack yet but it will have to double collections on Saturday or close to double to have any chance of survival. The apprx numbers of the new releases were as follows.

      Irada 10-12 lakhs

      Running Shaadi 10-12 lakhs

The collections of Running Shaadi are a total disaster as even Irada was beating it at many places. The difference is that Running Shaadi is a rom-com which could have some youth audience while Irada is one of those typical drama films without a cast which no one watches today. So Irada is as expected while Running Shaadi should have found more of an audience.

A few days back, she said that living in the same cottage with Shahid Kapoor during the shooting of Rangoon was a “nightmare”. And kissing Shahid Kapoor on-screen wasn’t a great experience for her. In fact, she said, it was disgusting.

Later, when asked for his comments on Kangana’s statements, Shahid Kapoor said, “I have to tell you that Kangana makes up things in her head. She has a vivid imagination. I don’t remember telling her all this at all.”

And that made Kangana furious. She just exploded when Pinkvilla asked for her reaction on the ongoing verbal duel between the two actors.

“That line he (Shahid) must have been borrowed from Hrithik. He would have thought that dude I will borrow these claims from Hrithik,” she said.

She went on to say, “I haven’t said such things. I give my version of the situation. When you are enacting a scene, we don’t do time pass. When we are asked questions on intimate scenes, especially to girls, there is a sleazy undertone to it. ‘Kaise laga aapko kiss karke?’ What am I supposed to say? I can’t say acha laga ya kharab laga. My purpose is to answer it as an actor.”

  24. Jolly LLB2 has broken quite a few rules en route this success. It doesn’t have any hero-heroine angle per se. It doesn’t boast of any heroic ‘masala’ angle. It is set more than 50% on a single set (the courtroom). It is practically led and driven by the presence of one man (Akshay Kumar). It has a director at the helm of affairs (Subhash Kapoor) whose biggest hit was a 32 crore grosser (Jolly LLB). It has a big star leading the show but the cost of making has been less than 25 crore. It brings a couple of issues regarding the socio-political and judicial system of the country but without making much hullabaloo around it.

Still, it has done well, both critically as well as commercially!

Akshay Kumar has fast turned out to be the only superstar actor to be balancing his genres at a rapid pace and delivering cost effective profit churners in quick time, hence keeping the (money) ball moving in Bollywood!

I am glad he chose Annu K as the actor opponent. Once again a clean 100cr plus hit. But he needs now to use this momentum to do something big.

Kabir Khan commences recce for next film in China

Kabir Khan has been pretty busy off late completing his Salman Khan starrer Tubelight. Though that film is still a long way from release, Khan recently took to twitter sharing images of his trip to China. But it isn’t the director’s travel bug that caught our attention; instead we hear that Kabir is in China on a recce for his next.

Commenting on Kabir Khan’s China visit, a source close to the director says, “Kabir is in China for a recce of his next film that will be made under the banner of Trinity Pictures.” The said film which will be the first film from the three Indo-Chinese productions Trinity Pictures had announced will be based on Pandas. “The project does not have a title as yet, so it is being referred to as the panda film for now”, adds the source when quizzed for details of the film.

Check out: Kabir Khan commences recce for next film in China

Further when prodded for details of the cast, considering that reports suggest that Khan has been in talks with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan for his next venture, the source claimed ignorance saying, “As of not there is no confirmed cast that has been locked.”

Back on the film front, Kabir’s current project Tubelight that stars Salman Khan and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu is slated to hit screens on June 25, 2017.

Now this is particularly troubling news for Ranbir and Katrina because they have already committed to other projects and squeezing in dates for ‘Jagga Jasoos’ again might be difficult. 35. I think there have been multiple re-shoots of the movie. The delays, coupled with Ranbir’s and Katrina’s decline in BO terms aren’t exactly good news for the movie.

The trailer looked very interesting, with some fantastic visuals. However, 29 songs being squeezed into the film dampen expectations. While the trailer reminded me of Tintin, I simply can’t fathom Tintin with 29 songs in the narrative.

Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s daughter Sara Ali Khan is making her Bollywood debut with SOTY 2, say reports. She will play the role Disha Patani was going to play.

Rumours have been swelling for months over Tiger Shroff’s rumoured girlfriend Disha Patani finally playing his on-screen love interest. It was reported that she was playing the lead opposite him in Student Of The Year 2 (SOTY 2), directed by Punit Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar.

However, it has now been reported that Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s daughter Sara Ali Khan is making her Bollywood debut with SOTY 2. She will play the role Disha was going to play.

A source close to the production of the film told DNA, “Disha was finalised as Tiger was keen to have her in the film. It would mean that this off-screen pair would finally woo each other on-screen and that’s also interesting for the audience. Producer Karan Johar and director Punit agreed to Disha, as she has a pleasing personality and is confident on screen, as seen in her last release MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Kung Fu Yoga with Jackie Chan. But for reasons best known to the makers, Disha has made way for Sara.”

  40. Aamir hating site finally give up on phenomenon on Aamir khan, admit even they were guilty.listen to 2 answers on questions on their today QandA.

    Q. Your take on comment of Vidhu Vinod Chopra about Aamir khan and Dangal success. He said even Hrithik can pull the movie to that success, what you think about this?

    A. It’s time for everyone, including us, to stop under-rating the phenomenon that is Aamir Khan. Everyone, including us, are guilty of getting too carried away by what happens in the internet world. The crowds outside houses of superstars on their birthdays or the sheer craze he generates is the love he / she has earned. But what truly matters is how many tickets an actor can sell at the ticket window or how much his films are loved. And at this point in time, the Top 2 are in different league. Taking what looked like an off-beat film like Dangal to 30 crore on the opening day is no small achievement. It didn’t have a popular leading lady, nor did it have even a known director. The film was entirely on Aamir’s shoulders and he has carried it to nearly 390 crore. A statement like Hrithik could’ve taken Dangal to the same level is silly – it would probably have held more weightage if it came from Rajkumar Hirani, but not from someone like Vidhu Vinod Chopra who does not really have commercial sense. Hrithik would’ve still taken a film like Dangal to be a very big total, but there are many other factors involved to make Dangal into what it is and it wouldn’t be what it is without Aamir.

Aamir’s name also carries trust and that’s the biggest factor which sells him those additional tickets. His smart marketing strategies cannot be ignored too. While most actors opt for sensation and television appearances – most of which makes zilch difference at the box office – Aamir did it so smartly that most did not even realise it was his marketing brain at play, all the way through. He ensured his transformation got so much coverage, that people were more than willing to pay, just to see what made him put so much effort into Dangal. An entire article can be written on this, we’ll keep it short and say Aamir is a genius, the likes of which the industry has never seen. Since he cannot be likened to anyone else in the past, his phenomenon is under-rated.
    Q. Will it ever be possible to reach the mega stardom of Salman Khan or Amitabh Bachchan or Rajesh Khanna?

    A. Why not? Anything is possible in the industry, someone could rise out of nowhere and that talent is long overdue now. Someone with that charisma, over night sensation.. it hasn’t happened since Hrithik in 2000. There may not be someone like a Salman or SRK or Amitabh.. but it could be someone else, someone unique yet fits into that quintessential Bollywood superstar mould. What will be difficult though will be to replicate the success of someone like an Aamir Khan. To work around the limitations and build the trust amongst his audience the way he has, is going to be very very difficult.

The explanation seemed like coming from BOI as commentary is spelled out very well…..but Indicine too critiques pretty fairly and I am happy they talked about the transformation video which completely gave a new meaning to this movie. Esp like the lines – ” Everyone, including us, are guilty of getting too carried away by what happens in the internet world.

HR still has the charisma to take a film to blockbuster status but not a genre like Dangal esp coming so soon after debacle of Mohenjo-Daro which fell flat with that bronzed look.
Aamir connect at the moment is at level of any superstar of past and present where he has the ability to make one smile when he smiles, make one cry when he cries. That emotional connect is necessary to get super stardom.

The film production company Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd. has filed a legal suit against makers of Rangoon including Vishal on the grounds of copyright infringement in Mumbai High Court.

According to a news report in a leading daily, Roy Wadia, who is JBH Wadia’s grandson and Managing Director of the firm, has stated that Kangna Ranaut’s character Julia has been inspired from Australian actress Mary Evans who is known as Fearless Nadia. As Kangna plays this feisty stunt woman, Roy Wadia claimed that his firm holds the sole rights to the scripts, posters and publicity material of Fearless Nadia films which has been produced by his firm.

The commercial suit also claims that the makers have infringed on the Fearless Nadia’s copyrighted character for Kangna’s Julia that also includes her catchphrase, costume and poses. According to Wadia, Nadia was known to use the catchphrase ‘Bloody Hell’. Interestingly, the first song from Rangoon was titled ‘Bloody Hell’ featuring Kangna where she is seen entertaining the army officers of British-occupied India. In this legal suit, Wadia alleges that the makers are using Fearless Nadia’s franchise to capitalize on its popularity

Explaining what he has in mind the meticulous actor says, “My director Nandita Das has done so much research on Manto I feel I know him well enough to get into his mind and body. The body part is relatively easier. I need to dress the way he did, and as long as I’m playing this astounding man I need to live my life the way he did. Alone writing words that created magic on paper.”

Now that the promotions for Raees are almost over Nawaz will free himself of all other commitments. “I will shut myself away from all communication. Nandita has done three years of research on Manto and I feel empowered by the knowledge of this amazing man’s literary wisdom.”

The committed actor has been reading up as much as humanly possible on Manto. “I plan to recreate Manto’s world around me. I will have my room re-furnished with the things that Manto lived with. I will dress like him, try to eat the food that he did, sleep on the kind of bed that he did, wear his clothes and talk like him. If I enter Manto’s physical world I feel I can penetrate his mind.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui to cut himself off from civilization to play Manto

Nawaz starts shooting for Manto in March. “We will be shooting in and around Mumbai because Manto lived in Mumbai and Lahore. As long as I play Manto I won’t be taking on any other project. I want to do justice to the awe-inspiring personality of this great man. And to be able to do this I am willing to make any sacrifice that is required.”

Nawaz feels there is too much celebration of mediocrity in our cinema. “We applaud even the smallest of achievements as though it was a great achievement. I want to get away from the tendency be praised for ordinary work. In Manto I hope to create a figure who won’t let down Manto.”

It’s an uphill climb ahead for Nawaz. “I know I’ve set goals that may be very difficult to achieve. But I am determined to make Manto proud of the film on his life. I know he’s watching us.”

She didn’t mind reminding Karan that he had made fun of her English at that very show and that episode inspired her to do better.
“Karan, you’ve been the driving force of my life. If it wasn’t for all the rejections and the mocking, I wouldn’t have made it,” she said, looking straight at Johar, undoubtedly one of the most powerful filmmakers in Bollywood.
But that wasn’t all. Ranaut, it appeared, came on the show with the intention of establishing a very intricate power dynamic — for years, Johar never cast her in any of the big-ticket Dharma project and now she had reached a place where it was essential for him to invite her on a show that he hosts.

Ranaut, it appears is very aware of this shift in the power structure, and she asserted it with casual nonchalance.

Without mincing words, she blatantly called him someone who’s ‘intolerant’ towards outsiders.

“If ever my biopic is made, you’ll be the stereotypical Bollywood biggies who is snooty and completely intolerant to outsiders. Flag-bearer of nepotism. The movie mafia.”
But this wasn’t even the wittiest part of the show. That came when Johar asked her whether she’d like to be poor and in love or rich but without love.

Kangana replied saying, “Karan, your idea of poverty is very different from mine.”

Just because the ‘owners’ think they know better, doesn’t mean they actually do. This Goenka fellow splurged 14.5 crores on Ben Stokes, who lost the T20 World Cup for England; couldn’t defend 18 in the last over! I really wish Dhoni would just quit playing in this IPL.

And this much is certain, the fans are not going to forgive this lunacy on the part of the owners.

      • I am presuming there must be a side story to all this. CSK ban will be lifted next year and Dhoni will go back to his favorite hunting ground. He may have solicited this and have Pune build their team around someone else as no Owners in right mind will not have MSD captaining the side – and it’s not for skill set but solely as a marketing plot to get more eyeballs to their games.

  54. Jolly LLB 2 Second Monday Business
    Tuesday 21 February 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 continues with its decent run on second Monday as it grossed 2.25 crore nett to take its eleven day total to 90.75 crore nett. The second week is looking to gross around 23.50 crore nett which is fair. It will mean a better second week than Housefull 3 but lower than Airlift and Rustom.

The lifetime business will also probably remain lower than all three Akshay Kumar starrers of last year as now 110 crore nett is looking the best case scenario for the film and it could be finishing in the 106-108 crore nett range. The business of Jolly LLB 2 till date is as follows.

    First Week – 72,98,00,000

    Friday – 3,50,00,000

    Saturday – 5,50,00,000

    Sunday – 6,50,00,000

    Monday – 2,25,00,000

    Second Weekend – 17,75,00,000 apprx

    GRAND TOTAL – 90,73,00,000

Overall the film has done well enough and is the first and only HIT of the year but its mainly due to the business in the North where it will beat the numbers of Raees while other markets just decent..

JLLB2 too got a lift on Valentine’s day but a clean holiday could have upped the nett by 10 cr.

  55. The Ghazi Attack Holds Well On Monday
    Tuesday 21 February 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) had a good hold on Monday as it did business which was similar to Friday. It grossed close to 1.50 crore nett on Monday which means that the footfalls were more on Monday than Friday as multiplex tickets take a 20-25% hit on Monday. But it has to be noted that the collections were dull on Friday.

The Monday business of this film gives its a chance to collect over the next few weeks. If one the weekdays were to grow that would put it into a better position and it is possible as collections and occupancy is still low. The film has a good trend on low numbers and it remains to be seen where it goes. Th e collections of The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) till date are as follows

    Friday – 1,50,00,000

    Saturday – 2,25,00,000

    Sunday – 2,75,00,000

    Monday 1.4-1.5 crore apprx

    Grand Total – 7,75,00,000 apprx

The other releases Iraada and Running Shaadi are gone and both will have to settle for lifetime business around the 1 crore nett.

    • this is a classic example of what happens with many films behind the scenes. Not just Kaabil but many films that gross much more and are not termed flops. Many films lose money because the distribution chains are complicated and unless the film is an all-out hit everywhere someone or the other loses money. It’s then a question of how the film was sub-distributed and so on. Again it’s all very complicated but in any case the claims that are thrown out by sites or whatever and that are formulaic (film ‘x’ sold for 50 crores, needs 80 to be a hit or whatever..) are simply false. I know I am only repeating myself but the overall number comparison (even assuming it’s true, always a big if, since nothing is verifiable) is meaningless. Because the producer might work out things this way but the distributors or someone lower down the food chain doesn’t. This is hardly a mystery to anyone (one of the reasons why people like Taran and Nahta say one thing publicly and then when you go through their trade journals the classifications are rather different.. those who were around during the NG days might remember these examples.. so a SRK film called a hit without qualification in the trade would be B or B- or something like this in the journal.. and so on). but for all sorts of dishonest reasons people play with these numbers (again assuming their correct) in different ways, pretend things are otherwise. And this leads to my other equally repeated point. The audiences have a certain impression of the film, if they don’t like it and if the common perception (among people they know) convinces them that the film is a flop they’re not exactly going to be swayed by what BOI or someone on TV says. Even more importantly the trade ‘knows’. a distributor who’s lost money won’t care about the classifications by various sources or even what the audience is made to believe (assuming this to be the case) since he (or she) knows who actually showed up for the film! Nonetheless people play these games because there’s a consumption market for this stuff on TV and even moreso online. And of course since so much of the movie industry is about perception there is always the extent to which a more positive perception might help on the margins. Finally when we have all these debates about stars (who is bigger, who is one or not) the simplest thing to do is to just follow the money. The big productions, the prestige directors and so on. These ‘decisions’ are never mysterious!

        • A bit of a meander on my part but why should a hit or flop be seen from a distributor’s point of view if he/she (inspite of all the know how and experience of film business ) is so naïve to pay excessive amount which is not line with market forces.Let us say for a Jan 26 date clash and current standing of SRK and HR, our limited knowledge would never bet on Raees doing more than 120-130cr & Kaabil 90 cr at max…why would someone with better groundwork and knowledge pay more than this ? I feel it’s an amenable alliance and most of the production figures thrown around just like box office figures. I feel relationship between actors-producers-distributors–exhibitors is all very fluid these days, more so due to easy access / communication and involvement of big bucks otherwise they would all get a heart attack with the money at stake.

In fact in my opinion only the technicians come at fixed price. The scale, sets, location etc is another locked cost of producing a movie. Rest is all give and take between parties. If one compares the number of movies made with finding audience in theater is diddly-squat, so god knows why these movies are made year after year. There must be many financiers associated with film business who are not there exactly to make a living out of it but for nefarious reasons and the most common being turning blackmoney to white, or for documenting profit and loss in balance sheet and then there are few for fame and getting close to movie stars etc…

Producers who used to be the suffering party in 70s-80s are the ones who make most of the money esp. due new avenues like digital and satellite rights etc. It’s people like KJO, YRF etc who keep staff running with volume as there is not much to lose at the end of the day. Avg movie stars get their market price and the big ones in anyway are not charging anything upfront now and get their share from producer’s profit once all the rights are sold.

Exhibitors are the last in chain and they are the only ones who may feel the pinch of a failure but these days we hear they don’t mind big ticket movies because profit margin on drinks/ snacks and popcorn is so high that all they need is crowd turning up for the initial few days and they are covered.

These days the real big losses are movies like BV, Mohenjo-Daro or a Fitoor & Bar Bar Dekho. Rest all of them break even and stay afloat.

If I lend you $100 and you don’t pay it back maybe I was stupid to lend it in the first place but I have nonetheless suffered the loss! In any case I don’t particularly care whether profit or loss is defined from the distributor’s point of view or the producer’s or whatever. I am only interested in whether people are losing money or not.

      • There too many reports out their highlighting how Indian distributors have lost money on both Raees and Kaabil. This does not happen with really successful films.

Not every film is meant to make big profits (that is a rare blockbuster deal), but each film is expected to do a certain amount of business based on which the prices are decided. Both Raees and Kaabil were expected to do much more than 130 cr and 100 cr respectively. That is the simple truth behind the losses incurred.

        • This amplifies Jay’s point about how people in various contexts don’t live up to their own definitions in these matters or how they’re dishonest on their own terms. But to get to your point, in this context, traditionally there were always certain precise definitions on what constituted a hit or not or more precisely how much a film had to earn in percentage terms (profit) to qualify for one or the other grade in a trade journal. Of course hit and flop are layman’s terms in certain ways. So whether a film makes a profit of 40% or 60% it might be a hit either way in that layman sense but as a matter of profits it might make a difference and hence the film will be given a different grade. But the problem here is that this entire system of grading films also depends on older industry norms where no film could become a hit of any kind without trending well and without doing minimally well in some universal sense. Structurally the system did not allow for the former any other possibility and for the latter only subjects that could work across the spectrum were attempted, at least at the major commercial level. For that matter even middle cinema films with more limited appeal nonetheless had that limited appeal in every major territory (which is different from films that appeal to the multiplex audiences of one or more territories..). But beginning in the 90s and a bit later when films because of their subjects became much more limited in appeal, when the grosses were driven either by the major metros or later on by a mushrooming of multiplexes in every territory (when you see the average Kanpur gross going up over the years that’s not because those films have suddenly become more appealing but that a multiplex or two is now part of the equation which maximizes the gross — ticket prices — from that limited percentage of the Kanpur audience that is interested in such a film.. until of course you get to say the Salman starrer or something like Ghajini or some of the other Aamir films where a more universal audience is minimally involved..) these older trade categories suddenly become problematic. Because only the rare film will fulfill it. Otherwise you have films that are significant grossers only because of major metros. Now note that these films are still released elsewhere and regularly flop in those parts (even with smaller print counts). Until you get to a more masala age or of course Aamir with some of his big grossers these films seemed like the limit (I remember all those old arguments about how a bigger gross wasn’t possible or how better trending wasn’t possible). So in a way those older trade categories are still relevant. But very few films satisfy them (which is different from saying that it’s impossible to satisfy them.. in other words a film doing a proper silver jubilee is close to impossible but a film satisfying those trade categories is much more possible). In such a situation you run into a practical problem. You can’t say that other than an Aamir starrier 99% of all other releases are not hits (even if not flops). Even the Salman starter on most days is largely an initial driven affair. And these days he’s not in the Bodyguard phase where the films are that cheap. What’s happening though is that you’re getting safety because of the initial and probably minimal profitability in many of these cases and you’re then selling this as a ‘hit’. Films that are in the average/above average category can be sold as hits in many cases but specially so with a red hot star like Salman who gets these massive initials. But there’s a big difference between this sort of thing and the kinds of grosses Aamir gets and ‘how’ he gets them. Here I’m not getting into the argument of whether Aamir is a huge star or not (this is a debate or a question only for people who are too deranged for one reason or another to see the obvious), I’m just talking about how most of his films behave. But in any case those who otherwise pretend to be following the trade or getting their cues from them and so on can’t quite explain why they don’t follow that rating system strictly. Of course we know the answer. Because people are just serving various agendas, whether as pure fans or for other reasons. The ‘I believe in BOI’ is in 99% of the cases indicative of one or the other agenda in the same sense. The same for anything else.

As an aside I should say that the whole set of claims about ‘Aamir gets hits because of a, b , c… etc’ whereas another star gets it when he just shows up.. is first of all incredibly crude (that sort of star only shows up in genres and films that he’s been accepted in…! so it’s a perfectly circular argument..) but also completely divorced from box office realities as a matter of common sense. A producer or a distributor invests money on a star who promises a certain return. If an actor does prestige films but has a hit or miss track record the producer will take this into account. He might look at the rest of the setup and so on because he knows he could go boom or bust with the actor. But if the same actor guarantees a hit irrespective of the subject he touches and beyond this usually guarantees a massive success, not just because of the absolute gross but also because of how the film is budgeted and so on, the same risk goes out the window. The profitability factor on an Aamir film is much greater than on a Salman film, there’s simply no two ways about it. Everyone knows this. No distributor sits at home and says ‘oh Aamir plans too much, he takes too much time etc etc..’. Because he knows there’s a guarantee here one way or the other. This is how stars are judged. What guarantees they can deliver. Having a massive initial followed by minimal profitability is great, but proper hits are better!

        • I agree that older standards of XX% profitability and trade ratings based on that are passe. A movie with gets an initial to justify some sort of profitability is termed as a hit these days. And that is Ok in my opinion.

The problem arises with movies like Raees, which gets a decent initial but no follow-through. Some distributors suffer losses and producers boast of their profits (the smugness of Rakesh Roshan in the above link is outrageous).

No matter how much we go easy on the ‘hit’ criteria, there should be a minimal standard. It is OK for a film which has broke even throughout the food chain, to be called a Hit. The problematic part is when movies which have suffered losses for some, are termed as hits or successes. Such agenda are plain exposure of dishonesty.

        • I don’t think the standards are passé. But yes they’re increasingly hard to satisfy. Not structurally close to impossible like jubilees which is a different matter. And the proof here is that in the South even today those standards are followed by and large. In Bombay films are either not being made for a universal audience or they are but are poor films. Not surprising then then that they’re poor on trending. Of course people pretend this isn’t the case by either finding the existing films completely satisfactory or by saying Aamir is making Lagaan every time! This is clearly false. He’s making good films or emotionally involving films most of the time but they’re not exceptional films in the Lagaan sense. Or even crazily entertaining like 3I where one could understand why some people were watching it 8 times or whatever. He’s making authentic films combined with a great sense of what can be sold to the audience within any subject. Now obviously his judgment his unique but there’s no reason why such projects cannot be seen elsewhere. doesn’t have to be this frequency and certainly no single star will have that judgment. But the projects should be possible, at least once in a while. Aamir’s stature means that those other films will other stars won’t get to the same initials and/or grosses. But they will trend well.

Of course I do agree that people are dishonest by their own standards.

      • I too have always been skeptical about this film. Of course I would be foolish to second-guess Hirani but I’m not simply talking about the box office. I don’t see the need for a Dutt biopic (I agree with Tony.. he’s not the kind of icon about whom this question would not even need to be asked) unless one uses it to make a larger comment on the industry or even moreso on society. The latter has of course always been Hirani’s instinct from his very first film onwards (the first Munnabhai is still to my mind his most interesting film followed by the first half of PK) and perhaps he’ll do some of that here. However I also think Hirani needs to graduate as a filmmaker to something more important or at least equally interesting. I think he’s done obviously a great deal through the Munnabhai films and the Aamir ones. But now to do the biopic and (if the stories are correct) finally another Munnabhai is not I believe a step in the right direction (though perhaps not odd otherwise since he clearly seems to have had Dutt on the mind since Munnabhai). But sometimes directors also have to get certain films out of their system, for better or worse. This might be one of those instances for him. I really don’t see the need for another Munnabhai though, not least because some of what he might have covered in this film he already has in PK. So I’m not sure what sort of progression there could be in another installment. In any case I do respect Hirani enough to check out the biopic and I’m ready to be surprised but I just don’t expect very much here.

        • Dutt biopic without the all important ‘bombay’ riots and then the so called retaliatory bomb blasts will be too velvety for people’s liking esp in current scenario when social media is so active and tempers flaring on both sides.

Fortunately or unfortunately I was in ‘Bombay’ on both the occasions i.e. during the Dec end ‘92 riots and then again during the March ’93 blast. In fact I was waiting to take the BEST bus at Reserve Bank in Fort just a kilometer away from Bombay stock exchange when the first blast took place….so there is a bit of history of those events with me too….so 2 things come to my mind about the biopic and it will be a test for Hirani as filmmaker if he is really worth his salt or just a armchair critic some sort of ‘look from far and far from good’ type of people we encounter in our daily lives.

1st – Mumbai carnage is a blot to Bombay cosmopolitan culture and people can take sides as per their political convenience as to what caused communal passions to rise so feverishly and in such destructive manner. However what is clearly documented is Sunil Dutt acted as a humanitarian and one of the only voices standing up against Shiv Sena and more so against Bal Thackeray whom he later had to beg and ask forgiveness to get his son released. Senior Dutt was catering to distressed voices in his own constituency and was providing shelter to riot victims. Meanwhile the macho jr Dutt had already antagonized the sainiks and was famously using his closeness to underworld to get back at them. It is sometime then that Bal Thackeray / Shiv Sena threatened them to stop otherwise they would come and rape his sisters in their bungalow. Apparently it was then Sanjay used his proximity to Abu salem and others and asked for assistance and was provided a AK-47 as a defensive weapon.

Part 2 is Dutt’s involvement in the blasts if any. All this terrorism talk had not taken full roots on Indian soil like now and people weren’t so careful with who they were talking & dealing and relationship still tied with loose ends. Now in order to get back Dutt may have knowingly helped the underworld or at the very least know about some of the planning. Also some of the taped recordings of Sanjay Dutt with Abu Salem and other Dubai based underworld is in public arena and transcripts in news paper. It’s all grey area and let us see how far the filmmaker goes with this stuff.

I will place Sachin Tendulkar higher than Virat Kohli: Harbhajan Singh

“….While talking about comparison between Tendulkar and Kohli, Harbhajan said they played in different eras and faced different bowlers and comparison would be unfair.

“Still I will place Sachin Tendulkar higher than Kohli because the kind of bowlers he faced were better than what they are now,” said Harbhajan and mentioned that the standard of bowling has fallen over the years.

“Overall cricketing standards have gone down over the years (since T20 began taking lead). In a T20 match a team takes 4-5 wickets in 10 overs and then expects the same in a one-day match.
“On English pitches one has to wait for maybe 30-35 overs to get two wickets,” said Harbhajan reminding that the players needed to change their approach to the game according to the place they are playing.

Harbhajan was of the opinion that boundary lines have shortened with the influx of T20 matches, especially with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“You want to have cheer girls along the boundary line. It is fine, but you should create a space for them somewhere else. Boundary line should go further back because nowadays even a mishit goes for a six, which is killing the spin bowling,” said Harbhajan.
He added, “Spinners are not getting anything to go for. We need to create good pitches. Test matches need to go on for five days to give spinners their due time to perform.”

That’s 24 bowlers who’d get into most sides now. Only a handful belong in that group today who bowl.

Whomever I have missed who is retired will probably be a decent bowler vs. many bowlers today. The collective wickets taken by these bowlers above just would show the gulf in quality! It’s incomparable. The quality of bowling is not great but the game is heavily in favour of batting. It’s actually boring. I heard some indian cricketer hit a triple century in a T20 game! That game alone the total was north of 400! It’s just plain ridiculous.

there are things that cannot be quantified very easily.. after he was hit by that delivery and nonetheless continued either Younis or Akram said in an interview later that they knew he was special. Not just the maturity at that age but the will. Some years later on an Australian tour Bradman famously put him on his all-time XI after watching him. Even though the team did poorly Sachin played valiantly. Again pure numbers wasn’t the defining thing here but the way he played, at least as Bradman saw it. He once said that Sachin would have averaged 80 on the Australian side. Now it’s hard to imagine anyone averaging that much but Bradman let’s say wasn’t a man easily impressed by anyone! I bring this example up because this is again one of those things lost in all the contemporary discussions, let alone stats. The purists still do it but the ability to judge an inning looking at all these other intangibles has been fading over time. It’s not just about Sachin but other players as well. Those remarkable moments Laxman had against Australia. Not that people don’t remember this but the game has become much cruder even since Laxman in a variety of ways. Yes there will still be pressure knocks, there will still be poise shown by batsmen, but one has to look at all the factors from the conditions on a given day (physical conditions) to the opposition and so on. By the way the other thing about Sachin was that he was no more likely to feast when the opposition was very weak or when the pitch was easier (actually easier pitches in the slow subcontinental sense he often didn’t like.. stroke players generally don’t). He was quite uncannily stable in this sense. So it’s not as if he was racking up centuries crazily against weaker teams. Again it’s not just about him. We don’t live in an age where Dravid can be properly appreciated. At least using existing standards let alone someone much older like Gavaskar. And again part of the problem (I know I’m repeating myself here) is presentism. We insist on believing that our own age in sports, films or whatever is like any other. It might be, it might not be. It all depends. But it’s certainly not the case that all ages are comparable. That would be an absurd proposition. So yeah we don;t know whether anyone will ever be called greater than Pele. Certainly Maradona was for the longest time the only competition, now there’s Messi as well. Most people these days are comfortable with this ‘trio’. But if you want one of these three in every decade you’re out of luck!

Tee-Yai, the tigress seen in the shot, was a moody beast who’d shoot whenever she was up for it. “She threw tantrums once every hour or so, and would refuse to shoot until her trainer cajoled her for the shots. Once, she even charged towards the unit, but her trainer got into action in the nick of time,” recalls the crew member. Rana, in the meantime, watched his feline co-star, from the sidelines doing her shots. Keshhav lets in, “Ashutosh would observe the tigress’ behavior and then would try to understand her moods and memorise her movements, so he could work on his performance to make it look like a real fight.”

  66. Rangoon is seeing good momentum going for it in the last 7-10 days. The film is being heard and talked about in many quarters and that has helped added awareness around it in the industry as well as audiences. The month of January was largely occupied with talks centered on Raees and Kaabil but in the month of February, the Vishal Bhardwaj directed film is seeing much better breathing space for itself.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has ensured that marketing is planned in such a way that currently, the film is finding much better visibility in many different mediums. Be it web, satellite or print, Rangoon is finding good traction and that has helped firm up its status. The film’s period setting means it would take a push over the weekend primarily with critical acclaim and word of mouth coming into play.

The film has its own star appeal in the form of Kangana Ranaut, who is at the peak of her career, with Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor bringing their experience into play. That has resulted in a good face value for the film. As for the content, since it appears to have a niche appeal, it would all boil down to how reactions begin to pour in by the time the afternoon shows are through on the first day of the film’s release. If the word spreads that this is indeed a classy film with entertainment for the masses as well, Rangoon could well have a free run for the entire week since it is enjoying a solo release for itself.

The Opening day numbers of Saif, Kangana and Shahid’s last releases were as below:

    Phantom – Rs. 8.46 crore

Tanu Weds Manu Returns – Rs. 8.75 crore

Udta Punjab – Rs. 10.05 crore

For Rangoon, we predict the opening day number to be in the range of 7 to 9 crore.

Over the last few months, the actor has been working out rigorously to beef up for the role, in his bid to resemble Sanjay Dutt. Now, we hear, Ranbir has even ditched his swanky set of wheels and travels by ferry to the sets of the biopic.

Turns out, the film is currently being shot at Madh Island in Mumbai. The shooting location is a good two-hour-plus drive for both Ranbir and director Hirani from their respective residences. The two decided to cut down on this long travel by opting for the ferry instead. According to reports, Ranbir, Hirani and the entire crew takes the ferry service from Versova jetty as it saves them hours of daily commute by road.

Naturally, at first, people using the public transport were thrilled to see the ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ actor travelling with them, but now they are reportedly used to Ranbir and the crew’s presence.

Jolly LLB 2 grossed around 2 crore nett on its second Tuesday taking its business to 92.75 crore nett. The film is looking to close the second week at 23 crore nett which will give it a two week total of 96 crore nett. The third week will see a big reduction in screens due to the release of Rangoon.

The film has been generally let down by the business of singer screens and smaller multiplexes while high ends are also not as strong as an Airlift. Despite being set in UP, the singls screens in that state have not collected well and that is what has stopped the film getting a higher total on the board. The business of Jolly LLB 2 till date is as follows.

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) is holding well on low collections. The business on Tuesday was in a similar range to Monday. The film has grossed around 9.50 crore nett in five days which is a low total but the film has a little trend going and remains to be seen what happens over the next few days.

The second Friday is crucial as though there is a major release in Rangoon, this film The Ghazi Attack has hardly consumed the audience so if Friday can be like how Monday and Tuesday have gone, this film may actually turn out to be a minor success. There is a Telugu and Tamil version of the film and the major weight on the Hindi version is P&A which is covered in five days but can it continue to bring in shares over the next few weeks. The collections of The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) till date are as follows

    Friday – 1,50,00,000

    Saturday – 2,25,00,000

    Sunday – 2,75,00,000

    Monday 1,50,00,000

    Tuesday – 1,50,00,000 apprx

    • BOI’s flop verdict of MP is funny. During its release the trade verdict was average as far as i can remember. Boi also had it something like that before they had a change of mind.

And they are calling a loss making movie like Raees as semihit.

      • Not just Wikipedia. Others too. I’m not saying the verdict is semi hit. I’m saying
        1) BOI originally had it as semi hit or above average or whatever. They never had it as flop.
        2) only now they have retrospectively changed verdict. Not just this film others too.

It’s a flop by me but many ‘love’ trade verdicts so for them the article is posted. All films that are retrospectively changed is not right.

MP was a safe film trade wise. If not it must be one of the few films to have a 1st week record and not cover costs yet trend as well as most film’s today except BB, Sultan, PK etc.

Devdas was at 28.4cr for them in 2003 and then they upgraded it to 33cr around 10 years later and it is at 41cr.

I have obtained the Mumbai collections of Devdas. Compare it with The Hero’s collections. BOI had The Hero at 24.9cr back then. And Devdas was at 28.4cr. You can see those figures made perfect sense. There was Kante which was at 21cr. These movies were, according to BOI back then, below average to average. The Hero and Devdas released around 7 months apart and it makes good comparison. The collections are for Mumbai only.

          Devdas The Hero

But these are trade figures I obtained from a journalist who was reporting from Trade Guide/ Film Info figures at that time. He still has a lot of BO figures.

So with the correction, it is:

          Devdas The Hero
          1.22 cr 1.33cr
          1.01cr 0.83cr

        • I had seen your post back then, Yakuza and it was one of the rare BO column that dared not to call Devdas a hit. Ironically, everywhere there were quotes of SLB that Devdas had cost over 50cr at that time!

But I do maintain, having seen it with my own eyes, that BOI had it at 28.4cr when they came online in 2003. They even called it ‘average’ and purely a ‘media hit’ rather than a ‘trade hit’, using their own words. IBOS NET had it a bit higher at slightly over 30cr back then.

BOI was already trying to downgrade Lagaan back then with claims that there was no comparison with Gadar’s business and they were claiming that Lagaan’s business should be compared with Indian rather than with Gadar.

Another thing I remember from back then is that they once affirmed (in 2003-2004) that Salman has the highest fans following among the Khans but that simply was not translating into huge numbers back then because most of his supporters were from the B and C centres. But for them, it seems like Sunny Deol was their God at that time. For them, he was No.1 after Gadar and Indian. And mind you, they were already writing columns against DCH!

I think that right now, Dangal is a really hard pill for them to swallow.

        • You look at Jolly LLB 2 numbers objectively. It was at 3.5cr last Friday. On Monday, it was at 2.25cr (much better than the traditional 50% fall). On Tuesday, it was extremely stable at 2cr. But read BOI’s comments for Tuesday. All they talk about is that the film has not worked at single screens and has under-performed in UP where the film is based on. The commentary is negative and you would think the film is a flop. Now, compare it when HNY was raking in a few lakhs after 2 weeks and how effusive they were reporting it while the truth was that the film had crashed after a great opening day. I remember we were actually laughing at the enthusiasm in their reports.

With regards to LLB2, I think they (BOI) said that themselves that it was nothing but a small movie with a big star. And it is known that the movie isn’t the costliest around. There were a couple of reports earlier that the movie will be in very good profit zone if it gets past 90cr. But the low costs are something BOI look like willing to ignore now.

If, according to Nahta, producers are happy, distributors are happy and the cast is happy, then at least it can be termed a success, compared to recent movies where distributors have lost out.

I think it will end up between 105-110 for BOI numbers. Taran’s will be around 115-120cr probably. It does look like a hit.

There is no authenticity to BOI numbers except that its perhaps the oldest online site out there. However, just being around for longer time does not make it authentic.

Anyways, jolly lbb2 has done well with 100+ cr. It should get to 115-120 cr (whether BOI accepts or not). There is no reason why Akshay will give out false numbers for this one.

        • That margin of error was even worse when Abhishek was at his very best. BOI really under-reported B&B, Guru, DMD and when it comes to Bluffmaster, they simply stopped adding to the total after 2 weeks to make the lifetime collections look low.

Their commentary for Abhishek’s films were actrocious. I remember they once hailed John Abraham as the star and the only reason that made Dhoom work! It looked like a cheap attempt to deny Abhishek any kind of credit.

The point is that we should not take their numbers and everything they throw at us as gospel truth.

    Rangoon (19)

Vishal Bhardwaj’s eagerly awaited Rangoon is now a better film than it was a week ago. The period film set during the World War 2 has gone through a change never witnessed in our films. Post censoring Rangoon has gone through more editing and was submitted this weekend for re-censoring.

According to sources in the know the film’s length has been reduced by a further 13 minutes. Says the source, “70 shots have been removed from the film after it was censored and certified a month ago. The original length of the film was 2 hours 47 minutes after censoring. Now it is 2 Hours 34 minutes. The product looks slicker and feels lighter. When the censor board members saw it they immediately warmed up to the re-edited product.”

A source from the CBFC on condition of anonymity said, “I think the earlier version of Rangoon was done too early. This was done to make it to some film festivals. Newly edited it came to us on Monday and we loved it.”

  79. Rangoon Review: Rangoon is an ambitious attempt to actually tell a triangular love story against the backdrop of war. The canvas is huge. Pankaj Kumar’s cinematography is exquisite. The narrative that marries Casablanca (1942) to Chicago (2002) — wish the music here was peppier — plays out interestingly in parts. You have grim war-scenes fading out to allow some naach-gaana. Then there is a good measure of romance thrown in, albeit without the fire. Also there is also an infiltrator angle that allows for intrigue. Bhardwaj, whose repertoire includes truly-fine works like Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider delivers, but not entirely. Some frames just hang, some scenes feel tedious. In his attempt to pack in too much on war, love and deceit, the maker ends up with some haphazard division of war scenes versus love games, leaving the viewer muddled.

I may not like Trump for 98% of times but 2% I may see some positive.
I may like Obama 95% of times but 5% of times I may disagree.

          Like

        • because issues don’t exist outside of the larger framing of politics. When things operate within the normal range of politics one can still accept that argument upto a point. But not when extreme figures are elected. So for instance the Nazis had a great welfare program and lots of other things that we would call positive if we didn’t know the contexts. But once we learn that Hitler was pushing these schemes then suddenly everything changes. My own extreme example here once more illustrates the larger point. I’d actually even go further and say that just looking at the issues is dangerous. Because you might miss the forest for the trees. In a Hindi film a villain might love his family, be sincere towards his friends, and even be honest in certain ways. All of these things we might count as positives but when they’re cast in the overall frame of the villain’s activities they mean little. Such an example might make for an interesting fictional (or real life character) in the psychological or novelistic sense but that’s a different discussion. The other thing I’d say here is that if you just focus on the issues everything and everyone becomes comparable. You might disagree with Hitler of the time but like him 2% of the time. What would then be the difference between Hitler and Obama? i.e. going purely by the issues?

I consider Trump a catastrophe of the highest order. I was no fan of Bush 43 and I think some of his policies were disastrous but he was still very much within the normal range of left-right politics.

What’s Good: Rangoon scores high on the visual quotient. Also, Kangana Ranaut’s Julia powers through the film like a true hero.

What’s Bad: Vishal Bharadwaj’s crow pleasing antics clubbed with his ambitions to make the film a la Shakespearean tragedy, make it a complete mess.

Loo Break: Definitely, two to three! This is a long film.

Watch or Not?: Rangoon is no masterpiece. It fails to rise above Vishal’s imagination of cinema. Lengthy and forced, it is a confused war-love-freedom struggle drama.
