    Rangoon Has Very Poor Start
    Friday 24 February 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Rangoon has taken a very poor start of around 10-15% on the morning shows. It was not expected to start well as these sorts find it tough and on top there is a director like Vishal Bharadwaj where the youth audience in big cities is aware what sort of cinema he makes (smaller centres and single screens audience are probably not aware but the film is not for them anyway) and on top a cast like Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranuat and Saif Ali Khan who need far better promos and music to bring in an audience as even combined the box office clout is limited. Still even allowing for this the opening is even lower than what one would have expected.

There is a holiday for Mahashivratri in parts of the country and that may help collections somewhat and with such a low start and on top a film which is not really for the morning audience the collections are going to improve as the day goes along but the fear is if the improvement if the expected improvement does not come then the first day may turn out to be a bit of a shocker. The film has to reach double digits on Saturday or Sunday (preferably Saturday) but that looks very on this opening.

The other films released this Friday 9′ O Clock, Mona Darling and Wedding Anniversary have gone the way as these non awareness film nearly always go and that is zero audience.

BO update: Rangoon opens to a shockingly poor response of 15%
      By Bollywood Hungama News Network
      , Feb 24, 2017 – 12:21 pm IST

After last week’s multiple releases, this week we see the much talked about Vishal Bhardwaj’s film RANGOON. Though the film starring Saif Ali Khan, Kangna Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor which is set in the World War II era has been in the news of late, will its somewhat dark theme settle well with the audience is the question of the hour.

Reports suggest that RANGOON that has received mixed reactions has opened on a rather dull note, with occupancy rates during morning shows being pegged at 10- 15%. While this low key opening to the film can be put down to the lacklustre music and the old world theme the film is set in, the business of RANGOON is expected to see a spike over evening and night shows.

On the whole, though RANGOON enjoys a solo release, it will have to depend heavily on positive word of mouth from the audience to post decent weekend figures. Simultaneously, JOLLY LLB 2 that released two weeks ago continues to run in theatres. Although at a diminished rate, it is expected to eat into the overall collections of RANGOON.

Last few days, was very bothered with what happened in Sindh, so was browsing through videos of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. To give a background, we Sindhis of every religion, caste or creed hold this shrine in eminent reverence. So an incident such as that really affects us. On one of those youtube videos, I entered into an argument. If anyone has time or inclination, one can just read the comments and even the ones by me. Draw your own conclusions. Link posted in the next reply, since multiple links would put me in hold at SS.

Regarding these shrines, when I went India last year I was super excited to visit the ones at Ajmer and Nizamuddin but was disgusted that they are basically just full of money-making frauds, intimidating and exploiting innocent visitors. After Ajmer we went to Pushkar and had an equally awful experience with an evil Pundit. Ugh, like an episode of PK.

        • Ajmer is like a second home, have a lot of maternal relatives there. Interestingly, some of them used to own shops near the Dargah selling janamaz, caps, handlooms of various designs depicting the Dargah, etc. All those shops would have names such as Shiva Handlooms, Parvati Handlooms, etc. Such was the syncretism that there would customers who would come every year during Urs to buy from them. I remember, one of my relatives keeping a Quran and Geeta side by side in a corner. Those types of unifiying images have disappeared.

      • Yes, I did let the guy get under my skin mainly because I was just aghast at the comments from him and many others in many such videos of this shrine on youtube. Its just not them, but even TV anchors on various PTV channels would not unequivocally condemn the blasts. There were caveats attached, such as these guys are not practicing the religion as it ought to be, etc. etc. In my naivete, I thought that perhaps a message of peace would enlighten anyone who read those comments. But it was disheartening to see the level of hatred which seems to have become institutionalized in Pak. TBH, I had not delved into this side of Pakistan, and was not aware how deep and deadly the fissures between the puritanical fundamentaists vs the Sufis and everyone else have grown out there. The Sufis with their syncretism are just sitting targets for the mayhem being unleashed.

        • Your comment was absolutely superb. But you cannot ‘argue’ with a person that is obviously trolling you. You fell for the trap. I wouldn’t be surprised if that “proud Muslim” hasn’t read and/or understood one verse of the Quran.

I don’t live in Pakistan nor have I been there since over a decade now but I believe (going by local news and knowing friends and family there) the majority of the country is not as fundamentalist as you portray it to be and there is a faction of the country that has committed these horrific crimes that are being punished appropriately.

Yes there is a history of very idiotic laws in Pakistan such as declaring Ahmedis as ‘non-Muslims’. Yes the influence of Saudi and Wahabism has been the main downfall of the Islamic religion in Pakistan but there is hope, especially in the youth and how progressive they are. Social media has actually brought some positive views and opened eyes (not everyone’s eyes obviously) of some who were narrow minded. There is hope as far as international investments being made in Pakistan which weren’t there before.

I think some Indians only see Pakistan in a certain light and some Pakistanis see India only in a certain light and that will never change. I actually see both countries succeeding in the future if they just stay out of each others way.

Also it’s pretty depressing that we almost always bring up Islam/Pakistan on this blog only when a horrific terrorist act occurs or when a Hindi film is banned in Pakistan.

      • This is not uncommon sadly. I’m gay and Muslim and often seen as the worst kind of Muslim. This black and white thinking is bizarre when Islam has a rich nuanced history. The Ottoman Empire for example decriminalised homosexuality in 1858. The wahabi way of thinking is a dangerous one, there is only one kind of Muslim, and everyone else is a kafir.

        Liked by 1 person

    • It is precisely the syncretistic that increasingly becomes a casualty when the worst fundamentalisms start gathering strength. Not just in the religious sense but also the cultural one. These shrines are about a kind of spiritual cosmopolitanism. Not surprisingly religious extremists don’t like them very much. In the same sense right-wing political ideologies are never too happy about multiculturalism. Now you can be more or less extreme in following your preferred fundamentalism, and of course not everyone resorts to violence, but the problem always lies in a vision of the world where there is one religion, one ethnic group, one race or what have you. But this vision always begins to be carried out locally. You first do what you can within your community or your city or your nation. This is why one must be against all such fundamentalisms and not so selectively. One of the problems is that often we don’t define the fundamentalism we like as such. We normalize it or we make excuses for it. Others do the same. So for instance the Trump voters offer excuses that seem all too common for me when I look at other parts of the world from Turkey to India. With the kind of violence one sees in Pakistan things are taken to a whole different level but that’s in any case a country and society in very deep turmoil. And so even the holiest shrines are not off-limits. My only point is that shocking as such an episode always is I cannot say it’s entirely surprising. Incidentally I looked at the comments, they’re disgusting, which is why I tend not to look at this stuff as a rule. Because again for the most part you have extremists commenting on these things. This kind of incident should affect every right-thinking person and not just Sindhis. And the same should be true of many other things as well.

But what is most disheartening these days is the amount of anger among people in our day to day lives and how it’s getting worse with all this 24/7 media, twitter & social platforms having far more access to our daily lives.

In principle by the end of 80s (our growing years) most of our divisions had given way to transform lives into sort of euphoric world where nationality, religion, caste, creed and color was of least importance if not expunged altogether. On larger multicultural political scale, the collapse of Soviet communism with reunification of Germany / Europe was heartening. Top that with singers of those era and Scorpion number ‘Winds of Change’ was all like an icing. In fact poor me and my friends took the movie ‘Demolition Man’ so seriously and debated how soon we would be in a nonviolent future society where all crime is seemingly eliminated!!! ….and gosh look where we are in 2017!!

….and then began 90s with that famous 1991 gulf war ( first major war of our times ) and systematic unsettling of our psyche with turmoil even in domestic land on caste & religious lines and
it’s been a rude awakening since then where levels of acceptable violence keep getting blur with each passing day. May be we were too young to realize the complexities then but current scenarios seem so bleak (on paper at least) and it seems with modernization we have actually gone back to the dark ages. The only thing left now for us is to witness is a full scale World War or something like that where a major correction takes place and populations across the world gets too exhausted to think about any violence for next few decades at least. I say a few decade because history shows human race has always been fighting since its origin for one thing or the other.

Somehow it all seems to be reaching a crescendo and we can’t blame anyone particular for this mess! In my humble opinion quest for materialistic gains seems to be the main culprit and cause of major evil which is spinning out of control with access to more and more information and too much connectivity. The only way to survive this mad world is to go back to our own little shell and live and worry within our small family curbings…….

They effectively finished that Gharana by killing Amjad, whose kids were too little to have learnt their style of singing. Their distinctive style would mesmerize anyone, irrespective of religion. I have heard them live, its just amazing how they managed to put people in a trance. And they just got wiped off.
I fear for the next ones such as Rahat Fateh Ali, or Abida Praveen or so many other singers out there. All these Dhol players who perform at the Dhamals, those dervishes etc., all of them are sitting targets now.

When are filmmakers going to realize the importance of firs trailer. If the first trailer does not excite us, we just tune out the movie (and a movie without big stars simply cant afford it). Any subsequent clips, 2nd trailers, interviews, marketing is pointless. These guys really need to understand the importance of THAT FIRST TRAILER.

    • But in fairness not every kind of film can have an explosive first trailer. It’s also incumbent on the audience to give certain kinds of films a chance. Equally this is an example of what it wrong with a film model which depends on initials at any end of the spectrum. In Hollywood you’d do a limited release for this sort of film and then gradually expand it (if at all). Once upon a time in Hindi cinema you could wait for WOM to kick in. Bollywood has neither of these options. It’s especially crazy not to go in for limited release. Of course with this option you have to control budgets and so on but it can be done. There’s simply no thinking that goes into all of this. It’s too easy to just blame the trailer. Again I don’t disagree that the first trailer is important but there are all these other factors as well.

but the audience these days are just programmed to forget about the movie if the first trailer does not impress them. Even trailers for movies like Queen and TWMR have a certain charm and curiosity about them that gets us to the theatre. Word of mouth does help but makers need to make sure that the audience are excited about their product. Just look at a trailer like Jagga Jasoos. I have no idea how the movie will turn out but the trailer sure looks different and interesting.

  10. Rangoon First Day Business
    Saturday 25 February 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Rangoon had a very low opening day of 4.75-5 crore nett as per early estimates which makes it tough for the film considering this came with the aid of Mahashivatri which helped collections in the North. The film was not expected to open well due to the promos, music and cast but still it should have done more than it has got. The film recorded very low collections all over but the performance in Delhi / UP and East Punjab was better due to Mahashivratri but there is a flip side as these circuits have strong growth on Saturday and now the growth may be less compared to other places due to the bump up in collections on Friday. Mumbai is just a little higher than Delhi / UP when Mumbai should be 50% ahead.

A film like this needs the actor to bring something to the table but the problem here is that Saif Ali Khan has never been much of a draw barring films with the top heroines of the time or double /multiple hero films and Shahid Kapoor has pretty much eroded whatever following he had with the youth with bad films like Haider and Udta Punjab. So when the promos don’t appeal and actors have no pulling power you get results like Rangoon. Its just seven weeks and now two big films have disappointing big time in terms of opening, Kaabil and Rangoon. Kaabil may have an excuse as it clashed with Raees but there is no such issue with Rangoon.

There is the weekend still to come and the film may get growth over Saturday and Sunday but it will be a surprise if it gets the growth it needs to comeback into the box office picture again.

    • Vishal Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap require self introspection. Their style of filmmaking is good for niche audience within limited budget. But to reach wider audience, they need to learn a bit about ‘Entertainment’ and how to add layers to script. Even a meaningful cinema is bad if not told in entertaining way. Cinema’s first and foremost target is to engage the audience till last frame. And it doesn’t mean going formulistic way will help, not at all , in fact just a bit of repeat pattern can lead to disasters. We have seen this in Trimurti , Mela , Koyla etc. All these movies were result of paralyzed creativity of makers. Its tough to be innovative, experimental and entertaining .. all at same time. Anurag is experimental. Vishal is innovative and meaningful. Alas both lacks the most important factor .. Entertainment.

OK. Bad in terms of box office is it? So the quality of the films means NOTHING to such entities? Both the films were very good ; Shahid too.

Why do you guys give this Box Office India so much bhaav , I will never understand. Cinema is a commercial art form, agreed; needs to be commercially viable. But doesn’t quality of film and performances mean nothing?

Yes films need to be entertaining, be a cohesive whole that tells a tale without getting boring. Even fiction and non- fiction need to follow this rule, films more so.

I recently watched Nil Batey Sannata on video. Lovely earthy sweet funny film that lost pace towards the end and dragged so much I actually nodded off for a few minutes. In contrast a film like Dangal never lost my attention, despite its length.

  11. Jolly LLB 2 Holds Strongly On Third Friday
    Saturday 25 February 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 has held up very well on its third Friday. The film has really benefited as the audience did not come for Rangoon and its third Friday has held up much better than its second Friday. Last week on Friday the drop was a little under 69% while this week it is 52% and this is despite a bigger film releasing this week. The collections of Jolly LLB 2 till date are as follows.

    First Week – 72,98,00,000

    Second Week – 23,50,00,000

Third Week (Friday) – 1,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL- 98,23,00,000

The similar trend to last week would have meant the film adding around 10 crore nett to its lifetime after the second week but now the film will probably add more than 10 crore nett alone in the third week and easily cross 110 crore nett

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) has also had a decent hold on day eight with collections dropping around 35-40% from day one and collections looking to be 80-90 lakhs nett on its second Friday. This takes its business to around 12.50 crore nett after 8 days. The film has chance of grossing 20 crore nett which can’t be called good but it is a decent little run for the film.

The fact that I watched it all alone with just Glenliviet , also helped since it’s a very personal kind of movie, with lazy, ( not slow ) pace and indulgent setup.
IMO the promos were highly misleading – 95% of the movie is set in present times, only 5% of the footage is devoted to the original Mirzia-Sahiban love story depiction ( and that too with no dialogs ).
Harshvardhan has acted really well, Saiyami ‘s father whoever that guy is simply brilliant.

      • Just read Rangan’s review —the guy is a genius !!
read just the portions I have copied here, but read the full review after you have watched the movie !!
We have to do a lot of filling-in-the-blanks in Mirzya. Besides the narrator, nobody speaks much – at least, nothing that means very much. Perhaps Mehra thinks that for a story this archetypal, no explanations are needed. The actions are the words. The Mirza-Sahiban portions are practically wordless. We hear no names. (This must be a first in the history of our romantic cinema). We just see a man, a woman. We see a family – many savage-looking brothers (who look like they wouldn’t need dialogues anyway; they’d rather grunt) – that wants her to marry someone else. Man and woman elope. Members of her family give chase, catch up… And we keep wondering: Maybe there’s a rich-versus-poor angle. Maybe it’s an honour-killing thing. We have ample time to think. These portions unfurl entirely in slow-motion. It takes about five minutes for the water kicked up by horses to settle. But beyond a point, guesswork isn’t enough. We want answers.
Many movies have worked in spite of the leads. Kajal Kiran and Tariq are laughably bad in Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. But how satisfying the drama was. It’s the same story. A boy and a girl separated as children. Fate conspires. They meet again.

And we begin to imagine what Bhansali would have done with this material
As a purely academic exercise, it’s fascinating to see how Mehra pulls back where Bhansali would have pushed right through

        “Mirzya”… A major misfire… But for a while, a fascinating formal experiment

CBFC chief Nihalani defends blocking ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’

Censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani on Saturday said that the film body is not only responsible for giving certificates to films, but is also accountable for preserving the culture and tradition of India.

Nihalani was addressing the censor board’s decision to deny certification to “Lipstick Under My Burkha” for allegedly being “lady oriented” and containing “abusive words”.

“CBFC is part of the government, the responsibility of which is not only limited to issuing certificates to the films but also to preserve the culture and tradition of the country. CBFC is needed so that right kind of films are exhibited in public.

“The status quo will be maintained till the time I am here. We will follow the guidelines. I thank my staff members and officials who are sincerely and honestly complying with government rules,” Nihalani said.

He said that the board does not have any objection with title, but has issues with the treatment of the subject of women empowerment in the film.

“CBFC has its own responsibility. Along with a certification body, it has a rulebook with guidelines and Act which works according to it.

“We have not blocked the title but our objection is to the content of the film. We are in favour of women empowerment as is being talked about but we don’t agree with the type of treatment and projection that has been accorded to them,” Nihalani added.

Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and produced by Prakash Jha, “Lipstick Under My Burkha” stars Konkona Sensharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey and Shashank Arora.

Why to give unnecessary publicity to this film? It would have died a quiet death on release.

  18. “Don’t talk to each other in Hindi or any other Indian language when you are at a public place in the US. It might land you in deep trouble.” This is one of the suggestions doing rounds among Indians in the US in their social media groups.

That sums up the fear psychosis among Indians, especially Telugus who are in large numbers in the US, after a Hyderabad-origin techie, Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed and his friend Alok Reddy Madasanni was injured in a shooting at a Kansas City bar on Wednesday.

Stating that life is precious than anything else, Vikram Jangam, general secretary of the Telagnana American Telugu Association (TATA), has suggested a few dos and don’ts for community members and people of South Asian descent.

    The tips he mentioned include:

•Do not get into argument with others at public places

•Should someone be provoking you, avoid confronting and please leave the place immediately.

•As much as we love talking in our mother tongue, it can often be misconstrued. Please see if you can communicate in English in public places.

•Isolated places can often be targets. Please avoid going or staying single.

•In emergency situations, please do not hesitate to call 911. Officers can come and help in such situations.

“Please be aware of your surroundings and say something if you see anything suspicious,” Vikram said.

Echoing the view, A Venkat Reddy, a Telugu techie who returned to India after spending more than a decade in the US couple of years ago and is still a regular US visitor, said it was always better to avoid confrontation with unknown Americans on streets. “The best way is to leave the place without any argument,” he said.

Surprisingly, Telugu NRIs residing in California, Washington DC and New York are not very much worried of hate-crime incidents, such as that of Kansas shooting.

“These are the areas where there is a large number of Indians. And Americans are also very friendly with us. So far, we have not faced such bad experiences here. There could be one or two such isolated incidents,” Sharath Devulapalli, a software engineer from Bay Area, told HT.

    • This is a very relevant video keeping the fear psychosis of religion & nationality being the paramount reasons behind such heinous acts, where Aamir says that he doesn’t believe in boundaries of faith, region & any other such man made narrow definitions but believes in “humanity” over & above everything else!! I know his thought is a utopian dream but still a “dream” that I wish would be true someday!!

  21. A very relevant & piercing write-up by Indicine on the economic realities of movies such as Rangoon & directors like Vishal Bhardwaj as cinema despite being the art form is tied by the financial constraints & can not exist in a vacuum like some other art forms such as painting, music or dancing!! They need to realise the primary responsibility of cinema is to entertain the audience not self indulgence & on top of it you are putting massive amount in Crores in your product which is not yours, so the responsibility doubles to make sure that the investor or the financer don’t lose money but noone cares for anything but to satiste their so called “creative greed” which ends up in debacles & fiascos 99 times out of 100, yet no lesson learnt!!

Rangoon Business Economics: Case of costs failing a film before release

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon is a classic case of economics giving the film absolutely no chance to recover costs at the box office. Even if Rangoon turned out to be a fairly good film, it would still be a flop. What it needed was extraordinary content and growth that matched films like ‘Piku’, which sadly isn’t going to be the case.

The film could be this February’s ‘Fitoor’ – which was made on slightly lower costs, but opened to even poorer numbers and was a major disaster at the box office. While it’s too early to write a film off on the second day of the release, a low first day total means it needs nothing short of a miracle from here – more so since growth in business hasn’t really come on Saturday. Some places have in fact shown drops from Friday.

The problem is not really the film here, but the fact that directors like Vishal Bhardwaj are given the budget and canvas to make films as big as this. Ideally, he should be casting non-stars who charge a much lesser acting-fee and the film should be made within a budget of 15-20 crore.

  22. Rangoon Has No Growth On Saturday
    Sunday 26 February 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Rangoon could not get any growth on Saturday as collections were similar to Friday. This was always likely to happen as though Friday was very low it was still aided by Mahashivratri which helped collections in some parts and these areas could not grow on Saturday. There was limited growth in some circuits but this film needed 60-70% growth just for some respectability. The business on Saturday seals its fate and even Monday is irrelevant now. The business of Rangoon over the first two days is as follows.

    Friday – 5,06,00,000

    Saturday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 10,06,00,000 apprx

The Friday business was a kick in the teeth to the actors fro the audience and although non are major factors at the box office, a combined effort at least should have yielded better results. Then the Saturday business was a kick in the teeth for the director as it means complete rejection of the film.

The Shahid Kapoor / Vishal Bhardwaj combination must be one of the worst in history actor / director combos in history. This is partly to do the fact that they got to make three films. Normally a combo that does not get results does not manage to get 3 films but here corporate backing allowed this to happen.

Kaminey got 68 lakh people to the theatre, then Haider got 44 lakh and Rangoon may well get less than half audience of Haider. On top Kaminey and Haider had no shell life, once out of theatres they were forgotten films with disaster results on television and eventually these things tell and here it has told on Rangoon. Going by Haider and Rangoon, a film like Kaminey actually looks a blockbuster.

    Sunday 26 February 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 had limited growth on its second Saturday as the strong hold on Friday came due to Mahashivratri and collections have not grown much on Saturday. The film has bulk of the collections coming from North and on Saturday that sector shows practically zero growth. It will still have a decent second weekend as growth on Sunday should be more. The collections of Jolly LLB 2 till date are as follows.

    First Week – 72,98,00,000

    Second Week – 23,50,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 1,75,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 2,00,00,000 apprx

Second Weekend (Two Days) – 3,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL- 1,00,23,00,000 apprx

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) had growth of around 15-20% and grossed around 1 crore nett on Saturday with 85 lakhs nett coming on Friday. The film totals around 13.50 crore nett in nine days. The limited growth here on Saturday was also due to it being Mahashivratri on Friday.

Australian team also knows about it because when we beat them, we also knew that they are going to come back at us really hard. I have no doubt that the Indian team is going to come back and compete hard,” he added.

Unlike Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar however did not mince his words when it came to dissecting India’s performance.

“Finishing in half-an-hour just after tea was unbelievable. Indians were a little careless. The Indian batsmen needed to realise that they needed to stay on the wicket,” Gavaskar said

“I can’t really remember India losing in two-and-a-half days. It was a bit surprising the way India tackled the Australian spinners. It was probably a bad day. I am disappointed with a lack of fight shown by the Indian team. Getting out in 75 overs in two innings is just not done. This was one of the worst defeats of the Indian team,” he added.

  28. Box Office: Rangoon collects 6.15 cr. on Day 3; has a low weekend of 18.25 cr.

For Rangoon to register some decent collections for its lifetime sum, it had to gather good momentum over the weekend. Since that hasn’t quite happened, what with Sunday bringing in Rs. 6.15 crore*, it is pretty much an unfortunate situation for the film that has been a passion project for Vishal Bhardwaj and his team.

One can’t deny the fact that the maker had put a lot into the film in terms of time, energy and investment. What has been spent on the film pretty much shows on the screen as well with opulent sets, outdoor locations and carefully designed props and equipments. The story chosen has been unique too which is pretty much the USP. However, audiences clearly had made up their mind to let go of the film and that has reflected in the footfalls which just refused to increase even after reasonable reviews, what with Rs. 18.25 crore* coming over the weekend.

The actors would pretty much move on though. Kangana Ranaut has her Simran coming up next. Saif Ali Khan would be seen in Kaalakandi and Chef. On the other hand Shahid Kapoor has his Padmavati lined up before the close of year.

Rangoon has been an expensively mounted film and one now waits to see the distance which is covered during its lifetime run.

    *Estimates. Final numbers awaited

  30. Rangoon had a very dull weekend as it opened poorly and was flat over weekend with collections being less on Saturday and Sunday and Sunday being lowest. The first day was the best day, The film collected 14.25-14,50 crore nett over its first weekend. The weekend business is in the range of films like Sanam Re, Raaz Reboot and Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 from last year and that pretty much tells the story of the film. The poor opening you can get away as films have jumped 60-70% and even more on Saturday but here that was not even close to happening. The film may see normal drops on the weekdays but that will be as collections are so low. The business of Rangoon over the weekend was as follows.

    Friday – 5,06,00,000

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000

    Sunday – 4,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 14,31,00,000 apprx

The film will have repercussions for the actors and director as it happened with the likes of Bombay Velvet and Mohenjo Daro. The film may end up with lifetime business similar to a film like Ok Jaanu. The cast of Rangoon may not be the saleable type but you would put the Shahid Kapoor / Kangana Ranaut / Saif Ali Khan combo ahead of Aditya Roy Kapoor / Shraddha Kapoor and on top Rangoon is a bigger film and Ok Jaanu clashed with XXX and Pongal releases down South. Despite this the results of both films will be similar unless there is some sort of miracle on Monday for Rangoon.

  31. Jolly LLB 2 Decent Third Weekend – The Ghazi Attack Low

    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 has taken its seventeen day business to 103.00 crore nett with around 6.25 crore nett in the third weekend. The film held well on Friday due to Mahashivratri and due to this the growth did not really come over the weekend. If you take the Valentines Day and Mahashivratri this film may not have reached the 100 crore nett mark even after the third weekend as they have boosted the film over 3 crore nett. The film has grossed 32.75 crore nett in Mumbai, 23 crore nett in Delhi / UP and 12.75 crore nett in East Punjab (Airlift is the record grosser for Akshay Kumar here with 13.50 crore nett). The collections of Jolly LLB 2 till date are as follows.

    First Week – 72,98,00,000

    Second Week – 23,77,00,000

    Friday – 1,75,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 2,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 2,50,00,000 apprx

    Second Weekend – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL- 1,03,00,00,000 apprx

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) grossed around 3 crore nett in its second weekend for a total of 14.75 crore nett in ten days. The film is holding on to low collections but is not really going anywhere. Its a tough genre with only really Border (1997) and Haqeeqat (1964) being the only war films to work at the box office and both worked big time with music as a huge plus. The problem here is its just mainly Mumbai and Bangalore collecting with Delhi city being around 35% of Mumbai city and Thane and when a war film can’t find appreciation in Delhi city it can’t go far at the boxoffice.

Akshay Kumar‘s Jolly LLB 2 has managed to go past yet another milestone over the weekend gone by. The film has now collected Rs. 110.71 crore already (after Sunday bringing in Rs. 2.50 crore) and in the process has gone past the Housefull 3 total of Rs. 109 crore and come in the vicinity of Holiday [ Rs. 113 crore]. Next target for the film is Housefull 2 [ Rs. 116 crore] and that should be crossed too in the current week.

The film is benefitting from lack of any major competition during the week since Rangoon hasn’t really been collecting. As a result, Jolly LLB 2 is a much more established film available for the audiences who are happy to give it a dekko.

A Hit film already, it is now adding bonus moolah in its kitty which is adding to the profits for all involved with it.

  35. Baahubali 2’s Shivudu-Bhallaladeva clash ‘father of all action scenes’: Rajamouli
Baahubali 2 will release in April 2017 and now SS Rajamouli in an interview has spoken about his film, giving us a glimpse into the world of Amarendra Baahubali.

Rajamouli reportedly said what audiences saw in Baahubali 1 was merely a starter before the main course.

“In the first part, we just introduced the characters and showed what they are capable of. The audience will see the actual drama, which will be high on emotions, in the second part,” he said.

One of the highlights of the film was the action scenes. However, viewers didn’t get to see Shivudu and Bhallaladeva clash and that the filmmaker says will be the highlight of the sequel.

“Now, the audience know the physical strength of two main characters, Shivudu and Bhallaladeva. But we didn’t show them what could happen when these two face each other in a fist fight in the first part. Even though we have war sequences and all, the fight between them will be the father of action scenes in Baahubali 2,” he said.

The trailer of Baahubali 2 will release in mid-March, the director said. (Twitter)
People keen on seeing the trailer of the film will have to wait till mid-March.

“We haven’t announced the release date due to a practical problem. We have already cut the trailer, but we are waiting for a few CG shots. Once we get them, it will take a couple of more days to fine tune and package them. So we are unable to announce a release date but it will definitely come out in mid-March,” Rajamouli said.

The film, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia and Anushka Shetty, is in the post-production stage and is expected to hit the screens on April 28, 2017.

With Baahubali 2 yet to release, speculation about Rajamouli’s next film supposedly based on the epic Mahabharata is already rife. It was also extensively reported that the director was planning to rope in heavyweights from three Indian film industries — Rajinikanth (Tamil), Aamir Khan (Hindi) and Mohanlal (Malayalam).

Explaining his position, the Indian Express quoted Rajamouli as saying, “Making Mahabharata is my ambition. But, it will take at least 10 years for me to gain the experience and technology that will allow me to bring my vision of that story on the big screen,” he said.

Anybody thinking this was all in a joke is either too naive or ignorant about the whole scenario or a sanghi himself.

  40. Rangoon Has Epic Crash On Monday
    Tuesday 28 February 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Rangoon had an epic crash on Monday as collections fell around 70-75% from the first day. The weekend was very low so normally a film would have a normal drop and hold at low levels over the weekdays but this film has faced the sort of rejection that has not been seen lately. Bombay Velvet, Fitoor, Mirziya and Rock On 2 are among the biggest disasters of all time but none of them crashed like this on Monday. Broken Horses is the granddaddy of disasters but that had no collections to talk off so that could not even crash.

The rejection on Monday is unprecedented but it was probably coming as the Shahid Kapoor / Vishal Bharadwaj combo had two rejected poor films in Kaminey (2009) and Haider (2014) so you should not really be trying your luck the third time as this sort of result will be around the corner. The costs got these two films to coverage but the public rejection could be clearly seen in the collections. The other hero Saif Ali Khan also had a widely rejected film with the director Omkara (2006) but did not learn the lesson that the main hero of that film Ajay Devgn probably did at the time. Its actually hard to put into words what has happened to Rangoon, there are debacles and disasters but this sort of rejection is a rare case. The business of Rangoon till date is as follows.

    Friday – 5,06,00,000

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000

    Sunday – 4,50,00,000

    Monday – 1,25,00,000 apprx

  41. Jolly LLB 2 And Ghazi Attack Down On Third And Second Monday
    Tuesday 28 February 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jolly LLB 2 has fallen to low levels on its third Monday and is coming to the end of its run now. The film is looking at and 8 crore nett plus third week which is average collection for week three. The collections of Jolly LLB 2 till date are as follows.

    First Week – 72,98,00,000

    Second Week – 23,77,00,000

    Friday – 1,75,00,000

    Saturday – 2,00,00,000

    Sunday – 2,50,00,000

    Monday – 60,00,000

    Third Week (4 Days) – 6,85,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL- 1,03,60,00,000 apprx

The Ghazi Attack (Hindi) is also low on its second Monday, The second week will do only 4.25 crore nett business and that is a drop of over 60% in week two which is too high for a film that did not really collect in week one. The film has held at low levels for some of its run but the appreciation is not really there in core Hindi markets which would have allowed it to get some respectable collections. The business of The Ghazi Attack till date is as follows.

    First Week – 11,75,00,000

    Friday – 85,00,000

    Saturday = 1,00,00,000

    Sunday = 1,15,00,000

    Monday – 35,00,000

    Second Week (4 Days) – 3,35,00,000

    TOTAL – 15,10,00,000

Shocked by Oscar mix-up? Bollywood film awards change winners last minute too
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Feb 28, 2017 – 10:38 am IST

So Moonlight beat La La Land to the Oscars. But only after a tamasha on stage where the legendary Warren Beatty wrongly announced La La Land as The Best Film. The mix-up was unprecedented in the history of the Oscars.

At the Bollywood awards functions mix-ups and last-minute alterations are the norm rather than the exception. About one of these dazzling awards events a senior filmmaker told me, “They were going to give the Best Actress award to Sridevi for her performance in English Vinglish. In fact it was mentioned on their website that Sridevi was the winner. And yet at the last minute they gave it to another actress. Sridevi and her husband were shocked and decided to boycott all the awards of the season thereafter.”

    R. Balki the producer of English Vinglish expressed the collective dismay of the entire team when he said to me, “In the golden year of Hindi cinema they forgot a truly golden performance. A 24-carat story. A gem of a screenplay and a sterling directorial debut. I think they are into silver.”

However Sridevi, no stranger to awards, can seek comfort in the legendary Raakhee Gulzar’s experience when she in her prime, was told she was getting the Best Actress award for what she considered a bad film and a bad performance.

Over to Raakhee, “When I was told I was getting the award for best actress in an awful film called Beimaan I said I wouldn’t accept it, not when just a few years earlier they refused to give me the award for what I thought was a commendable performance in Sharmilee. They chose to give Asha Parekh the best actress award that year for Kati Patang. Shockingly they didn’t even give Sachin Dev Burman, the best music award for his soulful music in Sharmilee. In fact Sachin and his son Rahul Dev Burman hardly ever got awards.”

In the year that Sohanlal Kanwar’s mediocre and long-forgotten Beimaan had walked away with all the awards, Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah was left deeply wounded. It lost all the awards. Unable to bear the snub to music composer Ghulam Mohamed for his immortal compositions in Pakeezah, the veteran-actor Pran who had won the Best Supporting Actor award for Beimaan, declined to take his award.

This was 40 years ago. Today co-actors protesting on behalf of their unjustly-treated co-stars is rare. A couple of years ago Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was informed she was getting the best actress award for Guzaarish. She was aghast when the name of the winner was changed at the last minute on the insistence of a spiteful leading man.

Many felt the redoubtable Sourabh Shukla deserved awards for his performance as wheezing cop in Barfi and as the sardonic judge in Jolly LLB.

Says Shukla, “There are too many awards. And an excess of anything leads to boredom. If you eat too much chocolate the craving is replaced by nausea. You can’t get excited about Holi if you had to play it seven times a year. Awards are a celebration of talent. If you have too many choices they are no longer exciting.”

Concurs Satish Kaushik, “Too many players spoil the game. These are more like reality shows than awards functions. I miss the days when there was one awards function, the Filmfare awards and the whole industry used to wait for it.”

  45. Lipstick Under My Burkha Wins Audience Award At Glasgow Film Festival 2017
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    February 28, 2017

The winner of the third annual Audience Award at the Glasgow Film Festival has been announced as Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha. Shrivastava was presented with the award by Doctor Who and Broadchurch star David Tennant at the Glasgow Film Theatre before the festival’s Closing Gala, the World Premiere of Mad To Be Normal.

Shrivastava and the film gained international attention this week following the decision by India’s Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny its theatrical release, citing the ‘lady-orientated’ subject matter and ‘sexual scenes and abusive words’.

Lipstick Under My Burkha tells the stories of four Indian women seeking more from life than docile domesticity. Young mother Shirin feels she must hide her professional success from her husband. Ambitious beautician Leela takes the lead with her Muslim boyfriend even as her family arranges her marriage to a Hindu boy. College girl Rehana is the Cinderella figure of the quartet whilst the older, irrepressible Auntie Usha sets her sights on a hunky swimming instructor. All of them are freedom fighters against a deeply patriarchal society in this colourful and wildly engaging production.

Whatever Kangana has achieved is not because she had a godfather but through her talent & hard work which Shekhar & his son can not digest & come to terms with so trying to find solace through such cheap comments!! And where Kangana stands today in male dominated bollywood is testament to her talent which Sumans could just imagine in their dreams!! More power to Kangana & egg on Suman’s face 😆

The subtle message and philosophical nuances went right over their heads.
What is there to joke about? At a time when she’s talking on another matter?

      Liked by 1 person

      • Nothing wrong with the peacenik stance, per se. It’s noble and all, and I perhaps would have taken the same stance had I been 20 myself. It’s difficult to take the same stance when one is aware that Osama Bin Laden was roaming around in Pakistan or Dawood Ibrahim resides there or, for that matter, Hafeez Sayed is plotting strikes sitting in Pakistan.

I mean, peace between India and Pakistan is a great idea. Wonder why no one else thought of it before?

On a more serious note, there is misplaced idealism and there are harsh practical realities of life. Otherwise one would also like to find some humanity in Hitler’s actions, or his motives, and somehow try to justify it.

Again, just to reiterate, I’m not against India-Pakistan peace. I’m all for it. We tend to get along fabulously outside the subcontinent anyways, and I have no problem in accepting that people in Pakistan also perhaps want the same. But — and this is a big but — I’m old enough to understand that extending an olive branch to a state (as in the nation, not the people) that is considered a terrorist haven isn’t going to amount to much. It hasn’t amounted to much in the past and unless something radical happens, it’s not going to amount to much in the future either.

        • You are sidetracking the issue. No one is asking you too agree with her or analyse the philosophy.

The issue here is the total lynching of her by actors, sportsman, media, journos, ministers etc – MISUSING one placard which for you was – oh so funny and not even wondering at the TIMING of bringing this up at this time after nearly one year – when she’s campaigning about violence of ABVP. Do you even know the kind of gangrape threats she got, for which Barkha Dutt and all spoke up. Even that you think was so silly and typical leftist and making big out of nothing?

          >”It’s difficult to take the same stance when one is aware that Osama Bin Laden was roaming around in Pakistan or Dawood Ibrahim resides there or, for that matter, Hafeez Sayed is plotting strikes sitting in Pakistan.”

For you, but not for her.
She did mention Japan and USA. Japan forgot about those two horrofic nuclear bombs which was far far worse than anything Obama did.
Anyway this is hardly the point I want to make.
My point is – the Sangh govt used its stooges to crush a girl and these stooges did it without an ounce of shame or guilt because of their personal gains. Sehwag for more land in Assam, Randeep helping his sanghi mother and the other sportsman hoping for some spoils too

        • not even wondering at the TIMING of bringing this up at this time after nearly one year – when she’s campaigning about violence of ABVP.

This is a valid point. I don’t disagree that her post on Pakistan was pulled out of context as well. But here’s the thing: how do I know that Sehwag was aware of the full context of that video? He might have seen just that picture and tweeted instinctively. Having followed Sehwag on Twitter, even I can say that it’s very much his nature to joke with anyone. Sanghi or not, his tweet is consistent with his past record.

Did Sehwag instigate any rape threats? Did he ask his followers to hound Gurmeher? If anything, he attacked the logic behind her post, not the person concerned. That’s the point. I am aware that Gurmeher was hounded by a paid troll army, and yes, she was issued rape threats as well, all despicable and heinous — but neither Sehwag nor Hooda instigated this.

I’m not in a position to judge someone based on a single tweet as to what his/her political affiliation is. How do I know for sure that Sehwag and Hooda are beneficiaries of the current political regime? I certainly won’t be relying on social media for such proofs.

My whole point is this: in this post-truth world, there is little honesty or morality to be expected from people belonging to extremes — be it the far-right or the ultra-left. I’ve never been a fan of the far-right, and now I certainly can see just how people in the center can be driven away by the far-left.

      • I’ve already seen this. Without proper context (Gurmeher’s video) it makes sense. Given the context, maybe it doesn’t. This tweet isn’t a straight-up case of bullying or hounding on the face of it. To be more precise, this isn’t Sehwag’s tweet either.

One more thing: your definition (and mine) of nationalism is going to be different from an athlete’s who has represented his/her country in the Olympics or at the world stage. They have to believe in the concept of the nation-state, its superiority and their own love for it to get anywhere close to winning a medal. This goes without saying. To such a person, a tweet like Gurmeher’s (taken with or without context) will only ring hollow. They are trained from an early age to believe in their country.

People shouting them down also need to understand this.

Again, I don’t wish to jump and assign political overtones to single tweets. Maybe I am naive in that sense. Maybe I like giving some people the benefit of doubt. Just like I don’t assign any political motives to Aamir’s comments on intolerance either (it’s his personal view and he’s entitled to it, whether I agree or not! Just to be clear, I do agree).

Saying something like “Pakistan did not kill my father…War did” isn’t exactly a deeply meaningful philosophy. It’s riddled with holes and that’s what people are making fun of. Fun as in joke — not threatening to rape. I’m aware of the difference between the two. As long as the banter doesn’t cross a certain boundary, I’m ok with it. Perhaps I have wider tolerance limits or like you said, I’m naive. I don’t like to ascribe malicious intent to people at the drop of a hat. I’m no fool to ignore a historical trail but in isolated incidences, I’m more than willing to give people the benefit of doubt.

      1. Why Kargil invocation?
      2. As six year old kid she stabbed someone in burkha.

You could be harbinger of peace but no need to bring Kargil in it. It happened and many soldiers died. India didn’t start the war and there are things not in your control. Also it turned out that some of her statement factually incorrect. Her father died fighting militant just after Kargil. Still he was a martyr and should be given due respect.
      http://www.tribuneindia.com/1999/99aug09/punjab.htm#11

Also, I am not sure a six year old kid figuring out someone who wears burqa is a Muslim. What kind of atmosphere she had at home? If it was anti-Militant, logically she would be a right winger instead of peace lover.

“Once when I was five-year-old, I even picked a wooden stick from a nearby shop and ran after a woman who was clad in Burqa at a local market in Saharanpur,” said Gurmehar.”
      http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/jalandhar/-lost-dad-to-war-want-no-one-else-to/231345.html

Her position is not of a neutral citizen wanting to stop the war but she has a political position especially when you are connected with prominent people of left. When you have political position you shouldn’t bring your father in this muddle.
      http://www.indiatomorrow.net/eng/need-to-wage-a-war-against-warmongering-civil-society-

Having said all above, it is her right to oppose anybody. If the rape allegations are true the culprits should be brought to justice. But she shouldn’t expect she will be treated with kid gloves from people she is opposing especially when the war is fought on all fronts.

“Delhi University (DU) teacher Prasanta Chakravarty, who was roughed up during the recent North Campus clashes, was hospitalised on Sunday due to severe abdominal pain as a result of internal injuries.

Prof. Chakravarty is an associate professor with the English department at the Arts Faculty.
He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Noida after he “passed out with shooting abdominal pain”.

The professor was allegedly beaten up by ABVP members when he went to Ramjas College on February 22 to support the students who were taking out a march to defend ‘free speech’ and protesting against the stone pelting on campus against the seminar: ‘Culture of Protest’.

Prof. Chakravarty said he had been “diagnosed with contusion and concealed spasms on the right kidney and on spinal extensor muscles. ……”

I’m not convinced in the least that he was instigating threats against Gurmeher by choosing to be funny — even if it was in response to an year old clip. And I don’t believe for half a second that he pulled out the clip because the BJP paid him to do it. That’s not just absurd, it’s probably a malicious lie.

  50. The shockingly low collections of Vishal Bhardwaj’s eagerly awaited period war epic Rangoon has shaken the film industry to the core. In the 57-year history of Sajid Nadiadwala’s production house Rangoon has recorded the lowest box office collections ever. That’s not all. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures who have co-produced Rangoon with Nadiadwala, are looking at losses close to Rs 45-50 crores (unless the film does a miraculous turn-around at the box office, which seems unlikely).

A leading producer-director who has helmed significant period films in the past says Rangoon goes wrong in taking the audience for granted. “Vishal Bhardwaj is an educated filmmaker. He knows Indian history. But the average Indian viewer is not familiar with World War 2 or Subhash Chandra Bose’s parallel Freedom Movement. Films that take audiences into the past don’t work unless they can connect with viewers. Period.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan makes some pertinent point as to why the film met a dismal response. “Right from the first promo, the excitement which is associated with a movie of this scale couldn’t be generated. Audiences could feel their disappointment after the first trailer. The connectivity with audiences was missing. Also, there is a lack of hit music. Vishal Bhardwaj films do decently well if public responds to his music.”

Atul also points out that the critics did not support the film after they previewed Rangoon. “The makers showed the film to a handful of selected critics before release so that on social media platforms they could generate heat. But here the critics played it safe by praising only the performances and camerawork but they said nothing about film on whole. The twitteratis are smart now and they smelled foul. The film’s length was also tiring. Had the film been entertaining the audience would have asked for more.”

After release the not so great reviews also contributed to the low opening. Says Atul, “As we all know a bad word spreads faster than good word. The high production cost is also one of the factors that will ultimately make Rangoon a losing proposition. But that is a burden which will solely be borne by Viacom 18. It is sad that filmmakers bring this kind of financial burdens on studios.”

Says trade analyst Amod Mehra, “The problem with the film is, the audience is confused whether it is a love story or a war movie. And if it is a war movie, it is about a war which we are not familiar with.”

  51. The European Directors Not Quite Out Yet

Rangoon has come and gone and sent shock waves through the industry with how bad results can be. It affects all involved in the film with the studio suffering the most with huge financial loss and this hurts as its not as if the studios are very active in terms of acquisition or production. It is a sad state affairs but there is a plus as its puts the value of another European director in perspective for the industry. These directors basically have an alien story telling style and narrative as far as the audience is concerned and seem to be influenced by the European art cinema circuit though they probably don’t know much about that either in reality as if you are not from there you don’t really understand the culture and finer points those films are trying to tell.

But in India these types probably think knowing about this cinema makes them intellectuals which is far from the truth as you don’t become intellectual knowing about cinema be it European, Indian or any other cinema. We have seen other European directors bite the dust like Anurag Kashyap (Bombay Velvet) and Dibaker Banerjee (Detective Byomkesh Bakshi) and now its Vishal Bharadwaj. There has always been a parallel cinema in the film industry for years and they made small films so when only a few people watched them nobody really got hurt financially.

The scenario has changed in the last few years as these type of directors started making bigger films as obviously they also want to make money even though they may pretend the financial side does not matter and they do it for art whatever that is supposed to mean. To make money you can’t be doing 5 crore films and they find that out fast. They have been aided by corporates and some of the younger stars who only get a gist of things when the debacle comes and the career is on the verge of crashing.

These directors are like a disease in the industry which is crippling the foundations of one of the very few film industries around the world which has withheld the threat of Hollywood. Vishal Bharadwaj, Dibaker Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap will probably have to go to smaller films as they won’t get the crores to make films after their debacles but the problem is this breed does not just stop with these guys. There are many but the ones left getting some sort of cast be it stars or mini stars are Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Basu. All these guys probably don’t have any clue what a desi Hindi film is. We won’t use the word commercial Hindi film as there is a difference as many times commercial films are not desi and earthy and take a beating.

The likes of Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Basu have got better numbers than than the others but that is they have worked with bigger stars and Imtiaz Ali out of all these also has a sense of music as far the audio is concerned though is not able to bring it out well visually. The last named director even has a 100 crore nett grosser but how it happened only god knows. A Barfi! can always work regionally (specifically Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata) but how the numbers came in Punjab and Delhi city to take to 100 crore is just a one of those unexplained things and happens once in a decade or even once a century. The issue is not that it happened but it was probably taken as real even though the horrible television results should put doubt there about the real appreciation of the film.

The director makes or break a film and to get the house in order its down to producers and studios to have a correct value of films by these directors who try and sell weird cinema in the name of Hindi cinema. They can have the stars but they are not going to give the star the results that the producer / studio will desire and the downside could be anything as seen by Rangoon and Bombay Velvet as the wider audience does not care for this cinema.

The ones who really suffer are the actors and many will say they deserve it for the bad choices but the problem is when its a good actor like Ranbir Kapoor who despite being a talent is still trying to find a footing because of the debacles by these directors. Eventually the industry needs the good actors to do well to survive as there are not many. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil may have done better but its more damage control rather than eliminating the damage. Now there is Shahid Kapoor after Rangoon who is not even talented as Ranbir so it will be even harder for him.

The next film for Imtiaz Ali is a Shahrukh Khan starrer and obviously it will be the biggest Imtiaz Ali grosser (this is not hard) due to the star power of Khan but if its again a European director making a Hindi film it will not get the numbers that a Shahrukh Khan film should, its pretty much simple as that. We saw with Raees that it looked a masala film from the promos but that inkling of it being an interpretation of a mass film by Excel Entertainment came true (LINK).

Anurag Basu has Jagga Jasoos with Ranbir Kapoor and all you can hope is that the best young talent we have can get away with it without a another big jolt but Barfi! was a fluke and if the storytelling style is the same you can’t get away with it twice.

The less said about Zoya Akhtar the better as even the songs have a European influence, a film like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara even has a half Spanish song and on top the three actors sing the song who don’t exactly sound like a Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar or Mukesh so what is the need when there are professionals to the job. Here maybe there is a reason as the film is partly set in Spain but even the tunes of other somgs be it Dil Dhadakne Do or Luck By Chance sound foreign. The relatability to a Zindagi Na Milegi Dbbara and Dil Dhadakne Do is zero for the audience and both films had casts which should give higher numbers and on top were total disasters on television which means forgotten films in a space of weeks.

There is absolutely nothing Indian in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do be it culture or values despite being family films. Now the cast is weaker as its reported to be Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Zoya Akhtar who makes films on rich people is now making some sort of film on a poor rapper as probably thinks the below par results of earlier films were because they were on rich people so now will go poor which is laughable because the same problems in story telling and narrative will still probably be there if th European hat is on. Ranveer Singh is on a sticky wicket after Befikre and till date his two main hits are period films which appealed to particular regions in a big way and this film has the potential to put another young actor down.

Its fine for these European directors to make films in Hindi (no doubt it sounds weird) but it has to kept to a level. Some are down to a level but others are not and debacles from these directors will be no surprise in the time to come as the signs are there with all of them giving low numbers for the casts they have been getting.

  52. Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to team up for a film?

Real-life couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan lit up the big screen when they teamed up in ‘Guru’ among other films. It’s a pity we haven’t seen the two share screen space since their last outing together in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’ in 2010. But here’s some good news for their fans. According to reports, Abhishek and Aishwarya are likely to come together for a project titled ‘Gulab Jamun’. The film will apparently be produced by Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films while it will be helmed by a debutant director. If the two indeed sign the project, it will be a film that their fans will look forward to with bated breath.

Abhishek and Aishwarya have previously worked in seven films together – ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’, ‘Kuch Naa Kaho’, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Guru’, ‘Sarkar Raj’ and ‘Raavan’. Ash even made a cameo appearance in Abhishek’s ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ where the two grooved to ‘Kajra re’.

Hrithik Roshan is presently high on Kaabil’s success. And why should he not? Kaabil gave him his much-awaited taste of success after his previous outing Mohenjo Daro bombed at the box office. Also, the Kaabil actor is all set to launch a workout regime with his fitness brand HRX in collaboration with CureFit, a healthcare startup.

But what is Hrithik’s next film? As per reports, Hrithik Roshan is collaborating with actor-choreographer-filmmaker Prabhu Deva for his next film, which is a remake of a Telugu film. However, neither the actor nor the filmmaker has confirmed the news as yet, which keeps it only to the level of speculation.

There are also rumors that Hrithik might replace Akshay Kumar in the Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster Kaththi, which deals with the issue of farmers’ suicide in India. The film was recently remade in Telugu, marking a comeback of megastar Chiranjeevi after 10 years and minted gold at the box office worldwide by becoming a blockbuster hit. However, whether Hrithik will be actually cast in the lead role of the Hindi remake or not, is still not confirmed.

Rakesh Roshan had also recently hinted that he is contemplating on starting work for Krrish 4, which will be the fourth installment of Hrithik’s superhero franchise. Amidst speculations over his upcoming projects, fans are waiting with bated breath to see which film Hrithik signs first.

Why brag about your knowledge or expertise when it has no direct bearing on the issue & on top of it, it exposes your condescending attitude through such silly remarks!!When you are famous & popular, humility is the best asset but very few know the importance of it & fewer to retain it!!

FOE is a pivot which democracy revolves around & without FOE democracy is non-existant!! Dissent is a very vital cog in the wheel of democracy as without it, it becomes “autocracy”!! To agree or not is one’s prerogative but shutting others up when one doesn’t agree to their point of view is out & out dictatorship & fascism which doesn’t bode well for a democracy like India which is full of diversity & plurality & it’s this very unique virtue which makes India!! On a more serious note, I am perhaps oblivious to the female perspective on these things. Especially in a male-dominated society like India’s where things can get ugly for no big reason. Not trying to be patronizing here (at all!) but being a male, it’s difficult to understand what exactly girls like Gurmeher go through. It does take courage to stand up for your beliefs, and I do applaud her for doing so. I don’t agree with her, but that’s a different matter.

  64. WASHINGTON: A softer, gentler, more Presidential Donald Trump emerged on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, seeking to heal a bitterly divided America on issues from racism to immigration while still projecting a muscular United States bound for glory in his time at the White House.

In a nearly hour-long speech to the joint session of the US Congress+ , the 45th President, just five-weeks-old in office, finally embraced the conciliatory aspect of the job, by telling Americans of all race, colour, and creed that “We are one people, with one destiny.”

In doing so, Trump also offered direct denunciation of the threats and vandalism against the Jewish community in the US and the shooting in Kansas+ that claimed the life of an engineer from India. The incidents, he said, “remind us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms.”

  65. A clue to Manmohan Desai’s ability to make his audiences laugh might be found in his vivacious, yet rather anxious nature. Asked whether he saw his films with audiences, he revealingly replied:

“No, no, I’m petrified. I’m petrified because if anyone gets up to go to the loo, I feel he’s doing it intentionally. And then I might pick a brawl. I almost did. Can you believe that when Amar akbar Anthony was running the 70th week in the Opera House, I used to go to see songs? But anybody who’d get up, well. I called one man and said, ‘Why are you getting up?’ He said, ‘I’m going to the bathroom.’ I said, ‘Don’t go to the bathroom in my song!! You want to make loo, you do it here. Don’t go to the bathroom!’ He said, ‘ But I want to go to the bathroom!’ So the manager said, ‘Look, Mr. Desai, you can’t do that. You see, they’ve paid money.’ And I cooled down, and I realized I better not go to the theatres. I’ll sit at home and hear the reviews. Since then, I’ve never seen any of my films in the auditorium. I won’t see them. I get damned scared if anyone gets up.”

Like many people with a comic gift, Desai was not a light-hearted, easy-going person. And if he recognized his flair for music, he could be somewhat dismissive in describing the humour in his films. ‘Gags,’ he called them, ‘nonsense.’ He certainly did not see him as a maker of comedy. Amitabh Bachchan agreed, ‘You wouldn’t put Amar Akbar Anthony into the comic cadre. It was a complete film. It had shades of almost everything.’ Yet if one defines comedy as ‘the comic element,’ and if one remembers that the cream of the comic genre are films structured to keep the audience passing in and out of various emotions, then Desai would deserve to be remembered as the ‘King of comedy,’ for no other Hindi film director has regularly matched his wit.

I don’t know how and when this social media ‘tu tu main main’ will eventually culminate. It’s been 17-20 years of constant chatter now. All the hubbub the minute you turn on your TV or internet is ear splitting to say the least……The way things are going non stop and looking at the incremental squabbling to each and every issue I am not even sure our generation will ever feel the calm before we finally bid adieu…..sad !

In reality hardly any issue gets resolved and the alliances move to new conflict one after the other and then even after these robust debates the common man on the road is neither safer or sounder or richer….each one responsible for their own destiny and no Trump or Modi or Obama is going to change anything for you.

Now let me seek out Mr. Satyam to this debate as there is no one better than him who can attest to the futility of all the bloviating, commemorations and endless back and forth leaving no stone unturned raving about a non starter like Mr. Abhishek Bachchan.
Its another fact that the debate finally gets amicably settled, but hey isn’t it all tad late in the day…… we are in the spring of 2017…..a good 17 years older when it all started….so we have all been guilty of wasting too much energy and exhausted to even point this basic fact to him now or chuckle. 🙂 🙂

  68. Will say a few final words on the Left/Right divide and whatever comes in between. My theory is, it doesn’t take much to elicit an extreme reaction. In fact, our brains are wired to either fight or take flight. Ergo, it is imperative to make arguments that do not hurt someone’s ego. Ego, as in self, someone’s sense of worth.

A lot of people I see arguing here have their minds made up — they consistently reside in their echo chambers and find comfort in repetitive thought patterns. But there are still some people who haven’t yet swung their minds towards one extreme. They are liberal at heart, genuinely believe in morals and ethics.

How do they get pulled into extreme positions? If one has made a liberal argument, not necessarily a very extreme one, and the right-wing nutcases hound that person, he/she is bound to move towards the left. Perhaps even towards the extreme left. The damage is done. Cue, Gurmeher Kaur. I’m not suggesting she will be right or wrong after this transformation, but my feeling is, her arguments will be more lopsided than centered.

The same holds true for the opposite case as well. Suppose a person makes a slightly right-of-center argument and he/she then gets hounded by the left-brigade with cries of shame on you, you bigot/racist etc. What exactly happens then? Isn’t that person more likely to say, “screw you all, if you call me a bigot, I’d rather be one!” This is an extreme case, but surely, if you name and shame a person enough, this just might happen.

So the order of the day is not to indulge in labels like Aaptard, Bhakt or semi-literate etc, but to actually make an effort to be respectful. Yes, simple as that. Also, remember that facts, even in this post-truth world, are inviolable. If you wish to be heard, don’t defend the indefensible. Don’t indulge in excessive whataboutery. Make a reasoned argument that appeals to your and the other person’s higher sense of self. I do believe everyone’s got a moral compass and one’s argument should be targeted precisely at that. One can’t address the other person’s higher self by addressing them as Aaptard, libtard, commie, Bhakt or semi-literate. I’m sure everyone can agree on this.

I believe that most people just want an acknowledgment of their concerns, rational or irrational as they maybe, and if those concerns are mocked or brushed aside, we turn them into breeding grounds for serious dissent. Once that happens, these people become highly susceptible to the calls of the wild — the extreme voices that are only too willing to cast new recruits in their camp.

Of course, not everyone has a moral compass. Some people have suppressed it to the extent that it’s no longer present. Some people are conditioned by their upbringing — the old adage about the sons bearing the sins of the Father comes to mind — and it’s tough to argue with years of conditioning and years of exposure to hatred. That’s where one stops and clicks the mute button. Silence is golden and ignorance then becomes bliss.

Not everyone is a victim of upbringing though. We need to make sure that the ones who are not, don’t feel the need to jump to one extreme or another. A little respect will go a long way in ensuring that happens.

    • This is a very fine comment, saket, very well said. I would add that the desire to be respectful should not intimidate anyone into a false symmetry, just to manufacture some “balance”. Depending on the historical period one is in, the two “sides” are not equally problematic — sometimes one is more violent, more cruel, more bigoted than another. I’ll use an example from US politics here, as it is less charged on this forum and can enable focus on the underlying point here: in America, it is simply dishonest to say “on the one hand, the right does this; and on the other, the Left does that”, because what the two are doing is very different, and not equally legitimate. At some other point in history, there might have been a truer symmetry, or the positions of the parties could have been reversed and so on, but at present, from (roughly) the election of 1992, the Republicans have gone down a dark path; and the conservative media outlets display bias to an extent that is unheard of with the mainstream major networks. The Democrats are simply not “the same kind of thing, just opposite”; they are, at present, a different kind of thing. It’s true that there might be a greater symmetry between left-wing extremists and right-wing extremists: but in the US, the former are weak, and few in number; the latter are powerful and well-financed — so even this symmetry is not manifested in the real world.

The way we are supposed to conduct ourselves in the society has completely broken down over this social networking,” said Kabir Khan at the inauguration of Khidkiyan, a theatre festival organised by renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra in Mumbai today. Kabir was referring to the harassment unleashed on the twenty year old peace activist Gurmehar Kaur post her stand on the violence at Ramjas College where innocent students (including girls and teachers) were thrashed by ABVP goons in Delhi recently.

An angry Kabir Khan went on to say, “It is unbelievable that someone can issue such threats to a 20-year-old girl and get away with it. It’s criminal. The only way to counter this is to throw those guys in the jail.” Gurmehar has been given rape threats. She has been told that she won’t see the end of 2017. She has been mocked by Virendra Sehwag, Randeep Hooda feels she is is being used as a pawn while politicians are saying that people supporting her should be sent to Pakistan. It is a bizarre situation. Wonder how many people will be sent to jail as Kabir says because there are many who have been given a long rope with law enforcing agencies openly supporting the anti social elements. Sad!

  71. Shatrughan Sinha bats for Gurmehar Kaur
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Mar 2, 2017 – 10:01 am IST

    Shatrughan Sinha

The tirelessly outspoken Shatrughan Sinha is dismayed at the trolling of Gurmehar Kaur. “The poor girl is being frightened into silence by the self-appointed nationalists and desh bhakts who are nothing but closet bullies,” Shatruji lashes out angrily, pointing angrily at the irony of the country’s artistes and sportspersons intimidating a young voice.

“We really need to stop labelling every Indian who speaks of peace with Pakistan as anti-national. And please leave the kids of this country alone. You may not agree with their views. But you can’t snatch away their right to have an opinion on everything including politics. If we continue to bully the young we’ll soon have no individual thoughts and opinions, only the herd mentality. You may not agree with what that girl says. But you can’t silence her voice no matter how much you dislike her point of view,” says the intrepid self-declared soldier of the Bharatiya Janta Party.

Lashing out at the people who are allegedly threatening Gurmehar, Shatrughan Sinha says, “If it is true that she has been issued rape threats then shame on the Government for not arresting these goons masquerading as nationalists. It is not patriotic to bully and threaten the young into silence. We need the youth to speak its mind to grow as a nation. True dissent is a birth right of democracy.”

Shatruji is all for a resumption of peace talks with Pakistan. “So many Pakistani soldiers are returned from India to Pakistan. Recently Pakistan gave us back out soldier Chandu Babulal Chawan. Such reconciliatory gestures are the need of the hour. We cannot laugh away or shout down voices that desire peace with our neighbours. Not our children please! Gurmehar apne ghar ki bachchi hai. Don’t talk about harming her just because you don’t agree with her opinion. Contradict her and scold her by all means. But don’t threaten her.”

In any case what does his film release date have anything to do with his comments on national issues? When did he say anything for publicity? When he spoke unwisely at the Indian Express awards function in late November 2015, Dangal release was a year away. He suffered through a year of vicious trolling by political goons and their online supporters — and finally won.

Dangal won because of smart filmmaking and optimum publicity that was not in your face. Rangoon lost because of overconfident filmmaking and the heroine’s need to talk, talk , talk in a manner that exasperated quite a few people.

Aamir should stick to making films and doing his brand of social service ( right now his Paani NGO is busy in its second year of a 5 year program to help Maharashtra overcome drought). The country’s politically involved section can take care of the politics.

    • Delhi Media Is Hurting Brand India With Distortions by Mohandas Pai.

Pasting excerpts of this article from – http://www.ndtv.com/opinion/delhi-media-is-hurting-brand-india-with-distortions-1665169?pfrom=home-lateststories

There has been a worrisome tendency over the last two years of Delhi-based media using highly local events, mostly in Delhi, to broad-brush the entire country as religiously intolerant; increasingly intolerant; as Freedom of Expression (FOE) and our rights being under attack; becoming increasingly communal; becoming fascist, etc. The good citizens of India are perplexed, hurt and angry at being so branded. The same media also brands citizens who do not agree with their India view as communal, intolerant, Bhakts, internet Hindus and the like, reducing the space for a genuine debate on multiple issues. Local incidents are blown up as All-India issues. Known and unknown political leaders who hold strong extreme views have often had mics thrust into their faces and their views blown out of all proportion as indications of an All-India view. To buttress their arguments they pick on abusive extreme views from Twitter, of which there are plenty.

Delhi is not India, and what happens in localised areas of Delhi is far distant from what India thinks and what India is all about.

At the time of the Delhi election, the media there took 7-8 incidents of vandalism on churches and blew it up as acts of growing religious intolerance in India.

It is obvious that India is in the midst of a deep ideological fight between the Left and left of centre activists and the Delhi Media against the right of centre government. The right again fighting back, branding everybody opposed to them as unpatriotic and anti-national. So, charges of communalism, fascism, intolerance against charges of anti-nationalism and lack of patriotism. All fine for the course except why brand India and Indians with the same charges for a fight between two small groups with 99.99% of Indians – and in all this, India getting a bad name.

I could have, as a citizen, ignored all this as a normal event, except that I witnessed its impact on Indians and the India brand overseas. At a business event, an elderly 80 years + titled peer told me she had signed a petition with 200 others protesting the visit of the Indian PM to London because India was becoming religiously intolerant, saw growing intolerance and there was a big assault on FOE. I said everything was fine, our rights were intact just 24 hours earlier when I had left India. She said she was an Indophile and concerned. I replied that if she was so concerned, she should visit India and find out for herself before she signed the letter and not defame india and Indians.

What makes the movie different from other superhero flicks is the way director James Mangold has dealt with the subject — without hesitating to show his ageing superheroes go into battle while they fight their own inner demons. Also, the highlight of the film is Jackman’s compelling performance. He knows it is his swan song and he exits with a flourish — an unforgettable end to a remarkable odyssey. You don’t have to be a comic superhero fan to enjoy this movie — watch it for the outstanding performances by Jackman, Stewart and Keen. This one’s a gripping finale to Wolverine’s indomitable journey.

Shah Rukh Khan has a loyal following around the world. It is not just the fans but even celebrities from different film industries across the globe know who Shah Rukh Khan is and his massive fan following. He is fondly called King Khan of Bollywood and rightly so, with these celebrities too showing their affection towards Bollywood and the star.

Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, who is gearing for the release of his latest Wolverine film Logan, has gone on record to say that this film is his last one as the iconic character Wolverine. While the fans around the world can’t seem to let go off the actor as Wolverine, Hugh thinks that it was the right time to bid farewell to the role and have a successor. In several interviews, he has stated that he would be fine with anyone taking forward this iconic role.

During one of the press junket, Hugh Jackman was asked who he thought could take over the role and would he feel a little bad about letting it go. Hugh said that he would be fine and said that maybe Shah Rukh Khan could play the role. Shah Rukh Khan is yet to comment on Hugh Jackman’s suggestion but seems like the Logan star would not mind another Bollywood star in Hollywood.

While the fans await Shah Rukh Khan’s response, Logan is set to hit the theatres in India on March 3.

Recently, actor Rajkummar Rao who is a pure vegetarian, had to eat meat for one of the scenes in the upcoming film “Trapped”. He calls the experience as one of the toughest for him.

He said, “Vikramaditya Motwane required me to treat the scene in a real manner. We tried enacting the scene with an alternative, but the result wasn’t satisfying. It was then that we realized that for a vegetarian like me, the emotions and the difficulty to dig my teeth into meat would only come to the forefront once I actually did it,” Rajkummar said in a statement.

He added: “The scene was then shot with me consuming meat. The experience was one of the most toughest calls I have had to take as an actor.”

The film is a survival drama where the protagonist Rajkummar gets trapped inside a house for days without food, water, electricity and even communication with the outer world.

The film is slated to release on March 17.

It can be speculated that a young impressionable 18-20 yr old girl with a traumatic childhood experience has been so easily brainwashed by these people.
As for her comment about war, yes I agree, Aliens or Transformers descended down to kill her father, definitely not anyone from the other side of the border. That’s about as much sense as that comment makes. And I also strongly feel that this comment could not have been her idea, it was implanted into her mind by the Left wingers, with the implicit strategy of trying to enrage the Right.
