  1. Rangoon’s 1st Week Business Is Same As Bombay Velvet | A Forgettable Run At The Box Office
    By
    Joginder Tuteja –
    March 3, 2017

After being in the making for a year (once the principle shooting of the film began), Rangoon has seen a forgettable one week run at the Box Office. The film didn’t open well, didn’t grow and then didn’t hold on in these eventful seven days when nothing went in its favor. There were no external elements that impacted it though. There was no competition from past, present or future, there were no cricket matches, there was no political event holding center-stage, there was no threat of demonetization either. Still, the film didn’t find audience and that was primarily due to the content by director Vishal Bhardwaj that went awry.

The film has collected just 22 crore in its first week and that is same as Bombay Velvet [22 crore] and just a little better than Fitoor [18 crore]. That pretty much summarizes how Rangoon has been rejected big time.
Box Office – Rangoon has a forgettable run at the Box Office
Box Office – Rangoon has a forgettable run at the Box Office

The film is pretty much competing with the lifetime of Saif Ali Khan’s other disaster Happy Ending [22 crore]. This is also amongst one of Shahid Kapoor’s biggest disasters, another being Teri Meri Kahani that had lifetime collections of 25.75 crore. Kangana Ranaut has seen bigger disaster though in the form of Revolver Rani [11 crore].

Each of the three actors is now moving on to Kalakandi [Saif], Padmavati [Shahid] and Simran [Kangana].

  2. CBFC demands disclaimer on dowry from Badrinath Ki Dulhania

    Badrinath Ki Dulhania

A hard hitting reference to the dreaded dowry system has the Censor Board Of Film Certification demanding an unambiguous disclaimer from the Karan Johar the producer of Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya.

According to sources, the dowry system plays a prominent part in the plot. “Although the film and its makers in no way endorse the dowry system the censor board has demanded a clear disclaimer at the beginning of the opening credit titles stating the film and its makers do not endorse the dowry system.”

Besides this disclaimer the CBFC has also demanded the removal of the word ‘pichwada’ (backside) from Varun Dhawan’s dialogue. “Both Varun and Alia Bhatt are youth icons. They should be careful of what they say and the values they uphold on screen,” says a source from the CBFC.

  3. Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar, who had hit out at Virender Sehwag for his comments on Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, has said that he takes back his “harsh” words as the cricketer has already clarified his statements.

“Since Sehwag undoubtedly a great player has clarified he was just being facetious and is not anti Gurmehar I take back my rather harsh words,” Akhtar tweeted.

The 71-year-old lyricist had earlier called Sehwag “a hardly literate player” when the cricketer trolled Kaur after her campaign “I am not afraid of ABVP” went viral.

Later, Sehwag, in a series of tweets, had defended himself, claiming that his social media post in reply to Kaur was an “attempt to be facetious” rather than one to bully anyone over their opinion, adding that agreement or disagreement was not even a factor.
    ×

Kaur, 20, the daughter of army martyr Captain Mandeep Singh and a student of Lady Sri Ram College, had started the campaign following the violence at Ramjas College.

She withdrew from her social media campaign after allegedly receiving threats.

Akhtar, however, praised cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who had said that the recent events have left him with a sense of disappointment.

“My respect for Gautam Gambhir who with out any fear of trolls and right wing extremists has stood for Gurmehar’s freedom of expression. Bravo,” he wrote.

“So many war veterans and retired army officers have supported Gurmehar’s statement but perhaps they are not “nationalist” enough for some,” Akhtar added.

My question is, what are Indian film-makers teaching the youth? It seems like they are just promoting crime.”

SHIVAAY beats ADHM on Television, records excellent ‘World Television Premiere’ viewership

Shivaay beats ADHM on Television, Salman continues to dominate

Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay has comprehensively beaten the ‘World Television Premiere’ ratings of Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Both films released during the Diwali weekend last year.

Premiered on Star Gold on Sunday, 19th February, Shivaay was the most watched film on television for the week starting February 18 and ending February 24. It garnered viewership of 62,92,000 (62.92 lakhs), ahead of the television-blockbuster Sultan which continued to outperform with viewership of 47,99,000 (47.99 lakhs).

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil premiered on television on 26 January (Republic Day holiday) and managed to get viewership of 24,23,000 (24.23 lakhs) on Colors channel.

Inspite of its under-performance, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, considering the genre of the film, did fairly well becoming the best premiere for 2016 Dharma Productions film. Kapoor & Sons, their best trending box office film last year, had significantly lower viewership of 14,18,000 (14.18 lakhs).

Salman Khan remains the top superstar on television, which adds tremendous value to the stardom he commands at the box office. His 2015 film, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo crossed 2.5 crore viewership, while his 2016 release Sultan topped 1 crore and followed it up with insanely high ratings almost every time the film was aired on television. In fact, the fifth airing of Sultan just fell short of 1 crore – which was more than the World Television Premiere ratings of all films in 2016 – barring Sultan itself.

Asked if in future she would like to lend her voice in her movies, the actress replied: “I can’t sing. If I start singing, then all will say ‘Pehle toh acting nahi aati thi, ab gaana bhi nahi aata. (First, she couldn’t act and now she can’t sing as well). After so much effort she has got only two or three awards.’ So, I don’t want to sing at all.”

“I sang in ‘Delhi-6’, but nobody remembers,” added Sonam, who has films like “Padman” and “Veerey Di Wedding” in her kitty.

  10. Commando 2 And Logan First Day Business
    Saturday 04 March 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Commando 2 (Hindi) had so so collections on day one as it picked up a little at multiplexes in the evening. The film grossed 4 crore nett on the opening day which is not bad. Its actually good if compared to the 5 crore nett of Rangoon last week which was a much bigger film. The problem is the pick up in the evening was very limited and the film is probably 1 crore lower than it should have been to really give it a good chance at the box office. The film was always likely to find it tough going in the metros and the reports from mass centres don’t really seem to be there. It will need to grow around 20-30% on both Saturday and Sunday to have a decent weekend but it remains to be seen if that can happen.

The best business for the film came in Nizam / Andhra, CP Berar and CI while it was poor in the Mumbai city, Delhi city and other metros. Commando 2 also had a dubbed version in Tamil and Telugu but that fared very poorly with collections of just 5-10 lakhs nett.

Luv Shuv Pyar Vyar and Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai had no collections to talk about though the latter was more.

The Hollywood release Logan is the first real surprise of the year as it grossed a healthy 4 crore nett apprx on day one which is higher than anyone would have expected. The collections are on par with Commando 2 and it could go on to have a better weekend than the Hindi film.

  11. Not too bad for Commando 2 when you consider that the usual John Abraham actioner opens at around 4.5cr. Out-and-out action movies are finding it tough at the BO. Ghayal opened at around 6.5cr last year. Baaghi was the exception (if one can consider it an out-out action movie). It was accepted universally and opened at 11.5cr.

    • We shouldn’t rush to judge everything as hate crime just because Indians are involved. Indians have been living under radar for long time; too much noise, you bring yourself in harm way for future. Law and order is till top notch and people should be cautious in general. In my more than 1.5 decade of living only once I have been honked once while crossing zebra. I ignored. With increasing Indian population law of averages will happen to Indians on receiving end of crime. People don’t understand that. I have been watching Indian new-entertainment channels and too much vitriol and rumor are being propagated.

This happened recently but went unnoticed.

      • of course everything isn’t a hate crime but three Indians were the victims of hate crimes between Kansas City and Seattle, rather close to each other. Much as anti-Semitic activity has increased dramatically this year (anti-Muslim activity too of course.. the percentages in these last two cases are the same). Now of course people aren’t going against Indians as such, they’re going against them because for them they’re Middle Easterners or whatever. But of course in the same mindset Hispanics are as bad. And you’ve lived here for very long but surely the point is that things are NOW different. Yes there was some stuff happening after 9/11 as well (many Sikhs were attacked then too) but with this president this behavior is being encouraged with a wink and a nod. In any case since the election all of this stuff has been heavily documented, from the putting up of images to actual incidents involving people. This didn’t happen before.

Commando 2 (Hindi) had a fall in business on Saturday which sort of looked on the cards as the reports in mass centres were not there and its chances were only in mass centres. The collections on day two were 4 crore nett apprx to take its total to 8.25 crore nett. 23. The fear of racial attacks and the uncertainty over short-term visa for skilled workers are two definite concerns for India in Donald Trump’s America. But the recent attacks against people of Indian origin in the US left in their wake another conundrum for India in its diplomatic dealings with the country, especially when it comes to offering and accepting consular help.

Consular help — an Indian mission official meeting the person in need with assistance — is sought and granted after verifying his or her nationality.

But the prevailing situation in the US, the media gaze and the political compulsions of the Indian government, makes the normal process a tenuous affair to follow.

The NDA government, which doesn’t want to be accused of any inaction, rushed consular officers to the spot though the victims of the attacks in last two cases were American citizens, albeit people of Indian origin.

Three people, one Indian national and two Indian-origin US citizens were attacked in that country recently.

An Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla, became the first victim of the hate crime in the US. He was killed when 51-year-old US Navy veteran Adam Purinton opened fire at him and his friend Alok Madasani at a bar before yelling “get out of my country.”

It seemed a clear case of hate crime against the Indian national.

Then came to the light the death of 43-year-old Harnish Patel, an owner of a convenience store, in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He was found killed by gunshot wounds in the courtyard of his home on Thursday. Patel was a US national and the county officials are of the view that what had happened looked like a burglary attempt gone wrong and further investigations are on. But India rushed consular officers to the spot.

    I

In a third incident, an Indian-origin Sikh man was shot at in his driveway in Kent in Washington district by a masked assailant who shouted at him to “go back to your own country”.

The Indian embassy in Washington swung into action and identified the victim as Deep Rai, 39 – again an American national.

The situation is tricky for the government. The fabled melting pot that US has been is now seeing attacks on brown-skinned people. Irrespective of their nationality, an Indian origin person is an Indian for most. For the Modi government which takes immense pride in its diaspora — both non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin, the prevailing situation leaves it with not too many options either.

  24. Box Office: Kaabil beats Raees in Week 5; scores hat-trick by beating Raaes for three consecutive weeks in a row
    By Bollywood Hungama News Network
    , Mar 6, 2017 – 9:00 am IST

Back in January we finally saw the much talked about and highly anticipated clash between Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan on the big screen with their films Kaabil and Raees releasing on the same day. Though from the two Raees initially took the lead at the box office, Kaabil didn’t fare too badly either, managing to retain its hold and grow as the days passed.

In this box office report we take a look at the fifth week collections of both Kaabil and Raees while comparing them to each other. Interestingly Kaabil has managed to rake in Rs. 12 lakhs while on the other hand Raees has managed to collect Rs. 5 lakhs in the same time frame. With the fifth week collections of Kaabil surpassing that of Raees the Sanjay Gupta directed film has managed to score a hat-trick by surpassing the collections of Raees for three consecutive weeks in a row.

However, though Kaabil leads the charts in terms of weekly collections now, Raees still emerges as the higher grosser with collections of Rs. 137.48 cr as compared to Kaabil that has collected Rs. 103.77 cr.

A case has been filed against unknown people.

Claiming responsibility for the attack, the Karni Sena said it had warned that the mirrors in the Padmini palace would be destroyed if they were not removed. The mirrors were installed about 50 years ago. The group alleges that the mirrors misrepresent the story of queen Padmini, who preferred to commit Jauhar or self-immolation to protect her honour rather than submit to Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. Khilji, the Sultan Of Delhi, had attacked the kingdom of Chittorgarh in 1303 apparently to capture the queen, renowned for her beauty.

Commando 2 (Hindi) had a low first weekend of 13.25 crore nett as it could not grow over the weekend. These types do struggle for growth but if you want to go anywhere then from an opening of 4 crore plus you have no choice to grow as occupancy is low and potential to grow is there. If the opening is higher then you can get away with a drop on Saturday. Even today these sort of films can still work on the strength of single screens but not at 35-40% occupancy levels, they have to be liked there and record higher occupancy. The collections are just 2 crore more than the last Commando film in 2013 and the budget is much higher. The business of Commando 2 (Hindi) till date is as follows.

As of March 6, the video has over 41,000 views on YouTube.

There were multiple cases of NRis being abused during Obama’s presidency as well but no one connected it to presidency. When will people understand that at the end of the day there are all kind of ‘people’ out there. The so called White extremists have not been born overnight and nor that they have gained some kind of support from the law enforcement for their activities but yes, the entire defeated media will now work full time to associate each incident with the presidency.

Except for few bad hits on Hillary which everyone pretty much knew what’s illegal there? How do we know if Julian Assange was not working for some US organization itself to do a number on her and what difference does it make if Russians were interested who was elected? Not only Russians but the whole world was interested in US elections and long as they did not tamper with the actual process of elections and ballots etc how does that equate with meddling with US elections. Is USA so weak that it cannot even hold fair and free elections? So why does it consider itself superpower. Or is it something more than meets the eye. Was Trump the only card for US to come close to Russia? Have the Russians privately threatened US that they are running scared and using Trump as an alibi to get close to Russia.
There are no simple answers to these questions and I am afraid for Trump now. The guy may be knocked off and god knows who would be blamed for that. Sometimes I see fear on Trump face as he is aware of the past knocking and conspiracies. 🙂 🙂

A comedy will surely be a refreshing change considering the filmmaker has only helmed adaptations of typical Shakespearean tragedies so far. Be it ‘Maqbool’, ‘Omkara’ or ‘Haider’ – these movies have been adaptations of Shakespearean tragedies ‘Macbeth, ‘Othello’, and ‘Hamlet’ respectively. The ace director has tasted success with his adaptations of the Bard’s works in the past, with all of them being hailed as cinematic gems. So it is no surprise that the 51-year-old filmmaker is reportedly revisiting another of Shakespeare’s dramas.

    • sounds like an interesting idea. However I’ve always found Bhardwaj lacking as a Shakespearean adapter. He just doesn’t have the kinetic qualities as a filmmaker to match Shakespeare’s ‘velocity’. And this quality is needed whether it’s a comedy or a drama by Shakespeare. Bhardwaj only displays it intermittently. Of course it’s also true that one can come up with a very different sort of ‘speed’ for one’s adaptation. But I don’t believe Bhardwaj by and large manages the mix very well. That these efforts are better than most of what’s out there from Bollywood is certainly the case but that’s a different discussion.

    • After a lot of speculation around Neil Nitin Mukesh’s role in critically acclaimed director-producer Madhur Bhandarkar‘s Indu Sarkar, it is finally confirmed that the debonair actor will essay the lead role of Sanjay Gandhi in the controversial film based on the 1975 Emergency.

While the film has the name Indu in its title, it was earlier communicated that the film will not have a direct reference to the late prime minister, Indira Gandhi. Both the actor and the director have been tight lipped about the character portrayal but this leaked image confirms that Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Sanjay Gandhi and Supriya Vinod plays Indira Gandhi in Bhandarkar’s much awaited Indu Sarkar.

It’s apparent the film will throw light on a lot of political controversies and will bring to the fore the untold story to the generation of today in a cinematic fashion. This film is sure to spark a lot of political debates since so far there was only speculation around what the film will be loosely inspired by.

Indu Sarkar is based on the Emergency, a 21-month long period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country. Indu Sarkar stars Kirti Kulhari, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Neil Nitin Mukesh in a pivotal role. Also, music composers Anu Malik and Bappi Lahiri are coming together for the first time to create music for Indu Sarkar. The film will be shot in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune. The National Award-winning director has planned to wrap up the movie in 45 days. The movie will release mid-2017 and went on floors in the first week of December 2016.

Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif starrer Jagga Jasoos gets pushed to July 2017 news

While audiences were eagerly awaiting the release of Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif starrer Jagga Jasoos, they were obviously delighted to get a glimpse of it in the trailer released recently. However, they will have to wait longer to watch the full movie. The film, which has been in the making since the past couple of years now, has been delayed yet again. The release date of the film which was initially May 2017 has now been apparently pushed to July this year.

In fact, Jagga Jasoos which was to release even before the past couple of films of Ranbir Kapoor, has yet again faced a road block in its release. Apparently, the final copy of the said film is said to arrive only in May and keeping in mind the promotional campaign for the same, the film will reportedly hit the silver screen in mid-July.

However, considering the new release date, buzz is that there are chances of a face off with other releases in the month which includes Saif Ali Khan’s Chef (a remake of a Hollywood film by the same name) and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai (biopic on Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parker).

On the other hand, there can be chances of Jagga Jasoos being further delayed in case the arrival of the final copy gets delayed. Prior to this, there were rumours that Jagga Jasoos was postponed from April to May since the makers wanted the detective musical to coincide with the holiday season.

Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, Jagga Jasoos is directed by Anurag Basu and it is said to be produced by UTV-Disney.

Sadly enough, the ‘Padmavati’ actress was again greeted with “Hello Priyanka” when she arrived at the Los Angeles airport recently. Kudos to the actress for maintaining her calm. Deepika quietly walked towards her car and left the airport without posing for the paps. However, this would not be the first time the actress has been mistaken for the ‘Quantico’ star Priyanka Chopra. Commando 2 (Hindi) had a normal drop on Monday of around 50% but that is not really good enough. The total so far is 15.50 crore nett and the film is probbly heading for a first week total of 21 crore nett plus. Then there will be the release of Badrinath Ki Dulhania which will hit the business of the film badly. A 30 crore nett final result would have been at least respectable for the film but its a tough ask with this Monday number. The business of Commando 2 (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    Friday – 4,25,00,000

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000

    Sunday – 5,00,00,000

    Monday – 2,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 15,50,00,000

    >

Hollywood release Logan had a decent hold on Monday dropping less than 50% from Friday. Its probably mot enough to keep the momentum going after the first week due to the competition but the week will finsh at 23 crore nett plus and then remains to be seen what happens on the second Friday. The business of Logan in its first weekend are as follows.

    Friday – 4,25,00,000

    Saturday – 5,00,00,000

    Sunday – 6,00,00,000

The distributor share of the film is just 41.50 crore which is poor. The film could not stand up to Raees and has ended with collections which are 42 crore nett lower and that is even though Raees could not hold well. The business of the film has ended very similar to another release which had a major clash Shivaay. That film finished at 84.83 crore but its distributor share was bit higher as its first week single screen business was better especially in Gujarat where it was an extended holiday. The distributor share for Shivaay was 42.50 crore apprx. The weekly business of Kaabil is as follows.

Week One – 65,74,00,000 (nine days)

    Week Two – 16,66,00,000

    Week Three – 3,54,00,000

They were predicting a 8.75cr total back then in that report. 2 weeks later, they seem to have ‘manipulated’ their own week 3 figures, downgraded it and now after week 5, it is still 86.5cr according to them.

Here is their own week 3 report:

Kaabil has remained below the mark from day one though did comfortably beat the numbers of Raees in the third week. the film stands at 86.50 crore nett after three weeks and will probably finish at 87.50 crore nett. the distributor share of the film will finish at around 42 crore. Krrish way back in 2006 had managed a share of 40 crore and more than ten years later Kabil is hardly better.. Below is the business of Kaabil till date

    First Week – 65,74,00,000

      • It most probably is. But there are question marks on BOI figures (which are usually taken for granted) as much as there are for Papa Roshan’s numbers.

I think even BO sources that have not gone for Roshan’s numbers, have numbers much higher than BOI’s. Does put some perspective in the Krish 3 numbers as well. The truth is probably somewhere in between the BOI and producer’s total. But I was among those completely trusting BOI figures back then. Maybe I was wrong and the real total was higher. Maybe around the 200cr mark if one goes for the middle range.

Because when you look at BOI’s numbers reporting for Kaabil, you can’t trust them anymore on this.

But I cannot forget how we, credible and respectable working professionals, cried and begged Bipasha to walk the ramp and how mercilessly she let not only us down but also India, and that too on a platform that was meant to portray the unity between two countries. As event organisers we are used to delays, complains and unreasonable demands but everybody always comes to an amicable agreement. Sometimes the organisers apologise, sometimes the celebrities and everybody goes home having earned some money and recognition. But this is unacceptable,” Ronita signs off.

You Asked It – Which Khan Dominated The Nineties
    Wednesday 08 March 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network
Google+ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Addthis

    Q. You wrote an article on European directors but these people are rated and all there films are looked forward to so how can you call them bad directors?

    A. The word bad was probably never used. The problem is they cant make the the audience understand the cinema they are making. Even with big stars the collections are not up to the standard of the star. Also if the films of these directors was looked forward to then they would open well which is not the case. The audience does not care but these directors have a lot of friends in the media who put a spin on it but that won’t give the results needed.

    Q. Which Khan dominated the box office in the Nineties?

    A. If you talking in between the Khans then it was Shahrukh Khan followed by Salman Khan followed by Aamir Khan but none of the Khans dominated overall. In the early nineties it was Amitabh Bachchan, in the mid nineties it was Sunny Deol and in the late nineties it was Shahrukh Khan. Overall the decade belonged to Sunny Deol.

    Q. Its impossible for a Salman Khna and Aamir Khan work together as just the cast budget will be 150 crore but can the likes of Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh come together?

    A. Even these two will be hard to get together. Maybe financially it can be done but the films where two heroes have equal roles are not really made today and both heroes will want best role.

    Q. The budget in many places of Rangoon is placed at 75-80 crore but on your website it says 61 crore and this is a big gap?

    A. There is a difference in budget and acquisition price. The budgets on the website are production cost plus promotion and advertising, they are not acquisition prices as some films have them and others don’t. More info can be found about how the website works here

Alankrita Shrivastava’s “Lipstick Under My Burkha”, which is not getting a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India, will be the opening movie at the 15th edition of Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA).

The festival will be held from April 5-9 in Los Angeles.

Revolving around four women — a burqa-clad college girl, a young beautician, a mother of three and a 55-year-old widow who rediscovers her sexuality — “Lipstick Under My Burkha” features actors like Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma and Aahana Kumra.

“As India’s diverse array of talented filmmakers continues to be recognized around the world for their compelling and daring work, IFFLA is extremely proud to collect the best films from emerging voices and experienced masters and present them to Los Angeles,” said Mike Dougherty, Director of Programming, in a statement.

“Lipstick Under My Burkha” has been deemed too “lady oriented” in content and according to the censor board, it is laced with sexual scenes and abusive words. But this is also a film that won a gender equality award at the Mumbai film fest last year, and recently won the Audience Award at the Glasgow Film Festival.

IIFLA, which will conclude with Shubhashish Bhutiani’s directorial “Hotel Salvation”, will also feature documentaries like “The Cinema Travelers”, “Machines” and “An Insignificant Man”. There will also be 10 short films in nine languages including Gurvinder Singh’s “Infiltrator”, Amar Kaushik’s “Aaba” and Sonejuhi Sinha’s “Miles of Sand”.

Films by debuting directors like Konkona Sen Sharma’s “A Death in The Gunj”, Ananya Kasaravalli’s “The Chronicles Of Hari” and Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy’s “Billion Colour Story” will also be showcased.

A host of filmmakers including Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who will make US premiere of his film “Once Again” in Malayalam, will attend the fest. Suman Mukhopadhyay will be making a North American premiere of his Bengali film “Incomplete”.

Reza Aslan, sir, you do not know me, nor should you ever, but I have been following your work for a while. You come often on television, and whenever you do, I envy your well-accented English and how beautifully you handle questions, and always, and I mean always, I maintain a running count of how many times you declare “I am an expert on world religions”. Your shtick is that no religion should not be treated as a monolith, that we should consider nuance and the overlaying of culture and national identity on the practice of a religion before criticizing it, and that Islam, the subject you are most asked to comment on, is misinterpreted by evil men for their own ends, it is not a fault of the religion or of the concept of religion itself that global Islamic terrorism and ISIS and Al Qaeda exist, and most importantly, anyone who suggests anything else, is an Islamophobe, a bigot, and a Bill Maher.

In that case even Ranbir with his feminine looks cant fit into that role. And yes, aamir is an Idiot when he pulled off a student’s role in 3 Idiots. Are not our heroes act with girls who could be their daughters or even granddaughters and getting away? Aamir would have been the more interesting choice.

  55. Kangana Ranaut: I Think People Want To Encash On Failure
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    March 9, 2017

After facing a setback with the failure of “Rangoon“, actress Kangana Ranaut says people have a tendency to encash on someone else’s failure, and now think that she will lower her price after the box office debacle.

“I think people want to encash on failure and think now Kangana will give a discount. They come to me and say, but your first day wasn’t good…my point is that I don’t promise you a first day in my contract. It’s the value for my job as an artiste. I give you a year and a half, my working hours, my depiction of a character,” Kangana said.

The actress talked about “Rangoon” with Rajeev Masand on show “March on Women”, which will air on CNN-News18 on Wednesday, read a statement.

National Award-winning filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s period drama is set in the 1940s amidst the turmoil of India’s independence struggle, and includes some historic references. The film failed to elicit the response the team was hoping to get.

The actress said that she has made a conscious decision “that you will never be good enough for the world”.

She said: “Even today after winning three National Awards if people feel I’m not good enough, I’m not going to succumb to the mind set. And I do feel that when you’ve suffered a setback, your dignity as a worker and your pride as a woman is really vulnerable to attacks.”

The actress says she is very ambitious.

“I’m very possessive of my credits, whether they’re financial or whether they are artistic…but I’m very greedy for that. And I feel somewhere women are taken for a ride. My ultimate dream is to be autonomous in every sense and to be this self-sufficient entity who operates on her own,” said the “Queen” star.

On International Women’s Day on Wednesday, the actress, who is also a Reebok ambassador, urged every mother to make her daughter ‘FitToFight’ through a film titled “Mom”. The message is for women to become tougher, to choose the tougher path, to pick the tougher option.

    • I agree with Kangana and beg to differ from what aamirsaurabh said above.

An artist’s compensation is not easy but even when you think of a salary you get from your company, is the fixed component based on outcome? No!! It is based on the effort and time you would be taking to use your skills to do the job to the best of your ability. Ofcourse the outcome decides your variable pay.

So if Kangana is saying that she does one film at a time and totally devotes herself into the character and as a producer and director you are looking for such a devotion then it would come with a special compensation. If they are not looking for such passion they are free to hire someone else. Its simple. See no harm in Kangana’s stand.

      • Kangana can ask for profit sharing after charging a standard fees which should be reasonable considering the risk involved in producing the kind of films that requires only her.

      • Sanjana – My point is that who are we to tell what should be her salary? Why do we think she might not be doing that.
Now every star wants Fixed + Variable. Those who are bigger stars like Salman, Akshay, Aamir are asking for 90%-100% variable now.
I think the problem here is the high fixed salary Kangana is asking and i think with her dedication and exclusivity, she has the right. Producers also have freedom to not chose her. But then we don’t have any other actor+star combo with Kangana’s quality and appeal. Her uniqueness makes her a compelling cast.

        • Your arguments in defence of Kangana’s fee demands are as lame as Kangana’s “unrealistic & irrational demands” inspite of “her own failure to guarantee at the very least an initial commensurate with her pay-check! If Working hours were the criterion for determining the payment, the director should, without any if or but, get the highest remuneration & the technicians should also get manifold hike based on Kangana’s understanding of economics!!

Kangana seems to be oblivious to the responsibility & accountability factors which are very fundamental when it comes to the top echelons of any organization as it is they who have to “own up & face” the failures or consequences borne out of their decisions!! But she seems to be taking full or sole credit for the success of her movies but disowning her responsibility for their failures (financial aspects only) which shows her lack of understanding of basic “commerce”!! If she is not able to deliver despite charging such an astronomical amount, she ought to be willing to look in to her part as a star for not being able to ensure an initial or the final gross, but her attitude doesn’t suggest she would!! If Kangana thinks that she is contributing much more to the project than just acting, she should also be ready to “understand” the economic & commerce part of movie-making as well as her role as a star in it!!

        • But a complete misfire is not solely her fault. And I’d always question the wisdom of the employer before the employee. It’s basic demand and supply concepts. Her main responsibilities are to act to her best, promote well (she failed here as she caused controversy). The rest is down to everyone else.

  56. Days after the release of the Koffee With Karan episode featuring Kangna Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan on the couch in its fifth season, it sparked a controversy when Karan reacted to a couple of statements made by Kangna on the show. While his accusation of the actress constantly using the ‘victim card’ hasn’t gone down well with the feisty Ranaut, she has responded to the allegations without mincing words once again.

For the uninitiated, when Kangna Ranaut appeared on the show, she made comments on Karan Johar and his close knit group by calling him the ‘snooty flag bearer of nepotism’ and that ‘he runs a movie mafia’. While the filmmaker took it in his stride then, during a recent event at the London School of Economics, he reacted to the same by claiming that Kangna Ranaut should stop playing the victim card and also stated that he gave her a platform to put forth her views. The filmmaker also mentioned that Kangna had probably misunderstood the meaning of nepotism.

Reacting strongly to his recent accusations, Kangna Ranaut spoke to Mumbai Mirror on the same saying, “I can’t speak for Karan Johar’s understanding of nepotism. If he thinks that it is restricted to nephews, daughters and cousins, I have nothing to say. But, to say that he chose not to give me work is to mock an artiste.” She further reminded him about their professional collaboration, Ungli in which she played the leading lady and he was the producer of the film but also added that their sensibilities didn’t match then.

Yet another statement that the actress was keen on responding to was about giving her a platform. While she continued to talk about the global platforms she has been in, she also stated on how he invited her for the fifth season of the talk show (which was Kangna’s first appearance) whereas the show debuted in 2008 thereby justifying her comment on ‘nepotism’.

But it was the ‘victim card’ that seems to have hurt the actress the most and now the spat seems to have turned into battle of sexes as the actress continued to speak about women and their rights. Calling it demeaning to women in general especially the ones who are vulnerable, Kangna went on to add that a ‘woman card’ can be used for pregnant women in times of need, for one’s safety, for getting justice and for many of these noble purposes.

“The same goes for the `victim card’, which women like my sister, Rangoli, who is a victim of an acid attack, can use while fighting for justice in court. I use every card possible. At the workplace, it’s the badass card to fight cutthroat competition. With my family and loved ones, it’s the love card. When fighting the world, it’s the dignity card, and for a seat in a bus, it’s the woman card. What is important to understand is that we are not fighting people, we are fighting a mentality. I am not fighting Karan Johar, I am fighting male chauvinism,” Kangna said.

Besides this, Kangna also gave a piece of advice to the filmmaker who is now a father and has a daughter. “Now that Karan is the father of a little daughter, he should provide her with all these cards – the `woman card’ and the `victim card’, as also the `self-made-independent-woman card’, and the `badass card’ that I flashed on his show. We will use whatever we need to ensure no one rocks our boat,” she concluded.

On the other hand, Kangna Ranaut also took on the comment where the filmmaker had maintained that he was gracious enough to not chop off these tidbits and allowed it to be aired on national television. She said that even the channel wants TRP and that Karan is just a paid host. Sarcastically stating that the film industry is not a studio gifted to him by his father, Kangna further went on to claim that every Indian has a right to be a part of the industry that includes even people like her who come from a poor background and she asserted that she is neither planning to nor will she leave the industry.

    • I think Karan has made a fool of himself here. He often does but his page 3 society lineage saves him.
When he talks of bollywood as a family fraternity, what he means is that we all are together and protected. Such attitude encourages nepotism. This is also obvious from his acts. Not that he cannot do, but then he doesnt need to go offensive when pointed.

Our next generation is going to be so much love Kangana. I can already see a biopic on her becoming a blockbuster. I can also predict that she is going to be talked about more by next gen than what we are doing.

Agree Karan is behaving with such poor vision and understanding and dare I say with a silver spoon. He took the punches on the show but if he had proper guts he’d have said what he has since said to her face. Kangana clearly has some mental issues probably drug related. But many celebs fall into this trap. She is a female superstar in her own right. She can charge a fee like Naveen says, it’s up to the payer to determine the worth and risk, not her. This as Sanjana says can be done on bonus arrangements if both parties are happy.

Karan allowed the show obviously because it’s publicity. He is that kind of person. Marketing and making money from it is his forte and all the power to him. He’s been in a camp from the off and when that camp begins to crumble you suffer as a consequence. His assaults on Devgnn and Kajol were opportunistic when his book was releasing.

His comments about playing the victim card, he’s doing it himself by his recent coming out. To me ‘coming out’ is the problem itself in society. If you make a big deal about that ‘event’ you are basically suggestive that society is backwards. Society is not backwards all the time. He need not make a big deal about it better to just show it then talk it. It happens it sport all the time, major footballer coming out AFTER retiring, it actually achieves nothing. It’s true if you did it whilst playing you expose yourself to ugly people and chants but you will find incredible support from regular people who will fight for you and your rights. Much like Kangana gets now. She’s not sweeping her issues under the carpet, she’s going out and spelling it out, people can choose to be with her not. I’m 100% with her. She said it to his face which takes guts on his show on her terms. That attitude might kill her opportunities but it opens the door for many. Karan Johar’s way of ‘coming’ out is standard, lacks any impact and has the same naiveness that will repeat itself again and again. And without reading his book I say a lot of this with caution as he may have extraordinary or extreme circumstances to not have done it another way. I’d never buy his book this way. If he’d come out years ago and his book was about the ordeals he faced then I’d consider it. But claiming it through his book and interviews around his book just feels ill timed and potentially to increase sales.

  57. First European Then Hollywood And Now Finally Hindi
    Thursday 09 March 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The last few weeks have seen different type of films with Rangoon being a European type film and then last week Commando 2 was a Hollywood rip off but this week will see a Hindi film with Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Despite it being the HINDI film industry you don’t see many with makers influenced heavily by Europe, Hollywood and even Korea. It is ridiculous but that is what is happening. This does not mean that Badrinath Ki Dulhania is sure to work as the content has to be there. But what it does is gives a film a good chance as at least people are interested in this sort of cinema and even if its just decent the numbers will be there.

There is not much to say about Rangoon as almost is everything is wrong and its simply an alien film for India. Then last week was Commando 2 which was like one of those poor b grade actioner in Hollywood and even then the action there is better. The budget is not there to compete with even B grade Hollywood actioner and the only way Hindi action films work is emotion and story as this is the USP that Hindi action films have for the local audience but Commando 2 was lacking that and the box office result was poor.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania does also have headwinds against it with mainly external ones. There is one internal one which is the main songs of the films are not original ones so despite good visuals as they are remix types that big song is missing. The external factors are Exams and Kong – Skull Island. If this film was released in June it would have done better for sure as summer is the best time for these youth films and being a earthy Indian youth film is a bonus. The market is a bit weaker early March especially up North.

Then there is competition with Kong – Skull Island, this film has not been promoted much is the case with most Warner Brother films but it will be surprise if Kong took a start. The South is already looking strong and remains to be seen where the rest of the country goes. Last year the Conjuring 2 from the same studio hit 60 crore nett plus without much promotion and in English too. Even some of the bigger Hindi films like Sultan and Dangal were similar and although most of the industry is not ready to believe but actors doing repeated interviews on television and online is really a waste of time as it does not really create the awareness that its done for and more importantly it does not convert and Kong – Skull Island is another film that can prove this especially if the content is there.

  58. Shekhar Kapoor to make Paani with Hollywood actors

Says Shekhar, “It is true I am no longer doing the film with Adi (producer Aditya Chopra). But, that doesn’t mean I won’t be doing this film. I’ve lived with the project for many years now. When I first spoke about the impending water scarcity 12 years ago, everybody laughed at me. Today, the water famine is a looming reality,” ays Shekhar pensively.

He, then, chuckles, “I do hope I am able to make Paani before water becomes a rationed commodity. If I make it then, no one would be able to afford cinema tickets.”

Poor Sushant Singh Rajput lost close to two years of his career preparing for Paani. Says Shekhar regretfully, “We spent close to two years planning the project together. But it wasn’t meant to be. Not with Adi. I’ll now make Paani elsewhere.” – See more at: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/bollywood/shekhar-kapoor-make-paani-hollywood-actors/#sthash.2St3wf75.dpuf

Really like the two quotes from Kangana –

“Also, the Indian film industry is not a small studio given to Karan by his father when he was in his early 20s. That is just a small molecule. The industry belongs to every Indian and is highly recommended for outsiders like me whose parents were too poor to give me a formal training. I learnt on the job and got paid for it, using the money to educate myself in New York. He is nobody to tell me to leave it. I’m definitely not going anywhere, Mr Johar.”

“Ms. Ranaut also said she is a little surprised at the “graciousness” Karan says he displayed in choosing to not edit the jousty bits on the show. She added, “While I’d have blacklisted the channel if something like that had happened, let’s also remember that a channel wants TRPs, and he is just a paid host.”

Kangana has flaws but she has chosen a path; Of course movies are more a director’s medium, you can not control how movies turn up.

That’s an accurate read of KJO. Add SRK to the list of making sense while talking but ending up with same old routine. Anyway I would still give SRK a chance to redeem himself with new set of directors but KJO disappointed big time with ADHM. After all that wait this is what he comes up sans srk and with that kind of soundtrack.

Kangana should approach a Salman type reach at the movies as she had great connect with that Dattu character. She had great potential but i guess it’s all going to go waste with constant bickerings. In that respect Deepika is right up there in terms of discipline and attitude.

  67. Badrinath Ki Dulhania Takes Good Opening
    Friday 10 March 2017 11.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Badrinath Ki Dulhania has taken a good opening of 30-35%. The morning shows in Mumbai and Gujarat are the second best of the year after Raees while in the North the opening is on par with Jolly LLB 2 which is the second best opening of the year till date. Overall the film is looking at the second best opening of the year after Raees for 2017. The difference between this is and Joly LLB 2 is that Badrinath Ki Dulhania has got more going for it than Jolly LLB 2 for the Friday morning audience while Jolly LLB 2 picked up in the evening as it had nothing for the youth.

The opening is very good for the cost of the film as its a medium budget film and even just holding up over the weekend will ensure a success. The film had competition with Kong – Skull Island but barring down South that film has not really opened and even in South it is an average opening. The Hindi version of the film has opened poorly across North and Central India as Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya is first choice. The film will probably doe better in Tamil and Telugu than Hindi as far as the dubbed versions go.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is looking at a solid first day and if evenings screenings show the normal uptrend it could end up having the second best opening day of the year which would put the film in a great position.
