Trapped, Badrinath ki Dulhaniya (ongoing), the rest of the box office

  1. I noted one thing in Badrinath ki dulhaniya. There was a scene where Varun Dhawan gets in trouble with a group of goons and later it was revealed that those guys are part of a gay gang and they do some ‘light molestation’ to Varun. The whole scene is perceived as a comedy scene especially since the rest of the people on-screen laugh it off. Most people in the audience laughed it off too.

It really shows the dual mentality of the audience. What if this scene had Alia being attacked by the goons and being ‘light molested’. would it still be laughable?

or What if this featured Alia being attacked by a bunch of lesbian goons? Laughable ..right?

The duality is not just in terms of male vs female bias but also straight vs homosexual bias.

People really lose perspective in seconds!

    • I thought the same Paapas and i did not laugh for a second. It was poor scene in my opinion and think censor board should not have allowed to make this a light scene.
Varun had quite rightly a painful pathetic face and he was superb in the scene.

that scene stood out for me too…and shocking considering one of the main producers of the film is himself gay. I would think he would be sensitive to that scene. For all the progressiveness in this movie, I guess the expectations should be tempered a bit, especially since it wasn’t meant to be ‘that kind’ of a film.

On the movie itself, I was actually surprised I ended up mildly enjoying it, especially some parts made me LOL. Varun and Alia were great in this one.

  4. Thought Badrinath…was a decent watch. Nothing special in terms of story and in fact the twist at interval stage seemed forced. Spoiler alert. Why would Alia have walked out from the mandap knowing that is simply wrong? How could she be sure that her sister’s marriage in the same mandap would not be stopped? Seems incredible that the sister’s in laws did not mind going ahead with the match after hearing that one of the daughter’s had eloped. In the context of the film’s world, that would bring a lot of shame to the family.

But if you can simply ignore such obvious missteps in the film, it is for most part entertaining and fast-paced. Varun Dhawan was a revelation. I have never liked him acting wise, though he is clearly a goodlooking chap. He operates on a cliched 90s template made famous by Govinda, Anil, Salman and like. He just doesn’t come across as a real person. But that very play acting has worked for him in Badri, where he successfully becomes the character. I enjoyed his antics, and his accent etc and bang on.

Much less successful and credible is Alia Bhatt. I don’t know about nepotism, but Johar needs to do his casting more objectively rather than just trying to promote someone’s career. The Dear zindagi worked belonged to Alia, and she looked natural there. Not in Badri. She never convinced me that she was born and raised in Jhasi. That is part of Alia’s problem. She cannot keep Alia out of her characters. A more rooted actress like Kangana or Anushka would have brought the requisite desi-ness and taken this role to another level. But I grant that both of them have done such roles before. Gosh, there just aren’t enough front line actresses who can look convincing in a small town set up. That’s where Madhuri and Juhi scored in their time. This aspect is becoming more important because multiplex audiences are leaning towards desi films these days.

  5. Even though I agree to an extent, I don’t blame Alia as much as the writing. Joharian directors have no touch with the heartland of India. Tanu weds Manu (first part) had amazing screenplay in-line with the mood and environment of Kanpur. The character of Pappi is the lifeline of this mood greatly helped by the mother and father of Kangana in the film.

Look at BKD- None of the cast- Varun’s Parents and brother/bhabhi looked and acted as if from jhansi. They acted as if in a Star plus show about Bombaiyas playing Jhansians. The father’s character especially was a joke. Neither did he look like Varun’s dad and nor were the dialogs in his favor.

Alia’s parents were much better cast in comparison. Although Alia’s dialog had a flavor of UP even though they were supposed to be from Kota (Rajasthan). Taking the audience for a ride with zero accountability for authenticity.

    • Watched BKD for Varun and Alia (more so for the spunk and off screen attitude than acting ) but thoroughly disappointed. The movie went well for the first 40-minutes but thereafter from the point Sandhya Iyer mentions in her brief review, movie gets weirder and does not make basic sense. Alia fans will be flat out disappointed with her character and common sense is missing after a promising first half. Obviously KJO’s notorious nepotistic loop got her cast for a movie where she seems a bit out place. Varun as always is reliable and good but movie is frustrating to sit thru.

This one along with Jolly LLB are just so so movies and I pity the Hindi cinema audience where they cannot get a decent wholesome movie. In the last 2 years except for Bajrangi, Sultan and Dangal there is not a single movie which necessitates your time at the theater.

There was a film called Trapped yesterday and it looked bad enough from the poster and a rip off of some foreign film but that was not just it. As reports came out yesterday it appears that the film has only one person in the film. This is just pure idiocy and can only happen this industry. Even if a film has just Salman Khan or Shahrukh Khan it still won’t be able to find an audience and here it is expected that Rajkumar Rao will find an audience. It can’t get more ridiculous that as even a liked actor will not find an audience just by himself. In fact put just the three Khan’s in one film and it will still be a dud. Its insane to think that just one character can take a story forward (ff Trapped has one) and engage the audience.

Its possible that the makers have made the film for themselves and their reviewer type of friends and that is fair enough but then why release it for public consumption and that too on 300 screens. There were three bad film released this week in Aa Gaya Hero, Machine and Trapped but the difference is that if you get a bigger cast in Aa Gaya Hero and Machine they might have got an audience but Trapped would only get one result even with the biggest stars.

There was a film in 1964 called Yaadein which only had one artis and it was known face in Sunil Dutt but the film still bombed very badly and this Trapped will be watched by even less people than Yaadein (1964).

just came back after watching Trapped.

a very brave attempt helmed by a fine director and a competent leading actor, Trapped is basically Cast Away set in a city. its funny and ironical that the presence of people and civilization was constantly present around the character (buildings, traffic noises etc) but not one could know what he was suffering.

despite the limitations of the plot and minimal to no dialogue for most of its running time, one does not feel not engrossed at any point. its a rare achievement which should be lauded.

The Hollywood release Beauty And The Beast continued to dominate the new Hindi releases Aa Gaya Hero, Machine and Trapped as it showed the good growth on Saturday as well as having the best collections by a distance. The film showed growth of around 60% on its second day taking its collections to nearly 3.75 crore nett in two days Aa Gaya Hero and Machine were flat while Trapped showed some growth but it is irrelevant at such low occupancy and numbers. All three films are disasters and will fail to recover in P & A (Print & Advertisement) costs from the theaters. The apprx business of the main new releases this week is as follows.

The Hollywood release Beauty And The Beast showed good growth over the weekend but collections were low but despite that it had a weeeknd which was easily more than the three Hindi films combined. Machine and Aa Gaya Hero fared very poorly as they were outdated films while Trapped was never going to get any footfalls even at high end multiplexes. When films which are like A grade European films (Rangoon and Rock On 20 are disasters then what chance a film like a C grade European film. It was a disaster weekend for Hindi films. The apprx weekend business of the main new releases this week is as follows.

    Beauty And The Beast

    Friday – 1,40,00,000

    Saturday – 2,50,00,000

    Snday – 2,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 1,70,00,000

    Trapped

    Friday – 25,00,000

    Saturday – 45,00,000

    Sunday – 60,00,000

    Saturday – 20,00,000

    Sunday – 25,00,000

Vidya Balan To Start Shooting For ‘Tumhari Sulu’ Immediately After Begum Jaan
Vidya’s character details of Tumhari Sallu are revealed here
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    March 20, 2017

T-Series and Ellipsis Entertainment’s comedy, Tumhari Sulu, will go into shooting within a fortnight of the release of her next film Begum Jaan on April 14.

This means that power-house performer Vidya Balan will not take a break following the release and will dive straight into a second round of look tests, script readings and diction coaching for ‘Tumhari Sulu’, being directed by noted ad-man Suresh Triveni.

Applauded for every role that she enhances with utmost perfection, Balan is known for her impeccable real-life comic timing. She will be seen in a completely different comic avatar after a long time.

As the character of Sulu (Sulochana), a simple, happy-go-lucky house-wife, stumbles upon a job of a night RJ (radio jockey), music is a crucial element of the film. Vidya’s fortnight-long prep will therefore consist of choreography rehearsals as well.

No Break For Vidya ‘SULU’ Balan : To Start Shooting For ‘Tumhari Sulu’ Immediately After Her Next Release

The soundtrack will comprise four diverse multi-genre songs scored by different composers. While the dance number will be a full-blown Bollywood-style dhamaka, the romantic number will be pleasant, candid and spontaneous. The street hip-hop number and the soulful mood number will have their own distinctive moves. As each song genre is different from the other, the choreography will be unique, with several renowned choreographers being roped in for the respective genres.

Says Vidya, “I’ve begun to enjoy dancing..it’s fun. Tumhari Sulu has a great array of songs and I’m looking forward to the rehearsals.”

Director Suresh Triveni adds, “Music, and therefore choreography, are integral to the film. They take the story forward. We are working hard on devising unique, candid styles for the tracks. The team is putting together reference video edits for each song and we are working with our production designer, cameraman and choreographers on everything from the color palette of the songs to how they will be shot to the moves.”

‘Tumhari Sulu’ is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Tanuj Garg, Atul Kasbekar and Shanti Sivaram Maini. It releases on December 1.

Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming next, which is a biopic on Sanjay Dutt has been making all the right noise.

Recently Ranbir Kapoor was snapped on the sets. The actor was seen sporting long locks and has beefed up to fit into the role. Ranbir’s uncanny resemblance to Sanjay Dutt from his earlier days, without a doubt, took the internet by storm and created immense anticipation.

However, a well-kept secret is that Ranbir Kapoor will be donning 6 different looks throughout the film.

Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in various looks of Sanjay Dutt marking different phases of his life. Sanjay Dutt has sported a variety of looks through his journey and Rajkumar Hirani is leaving no stone unturned to bring it all to the silver screen.

The looks will vary from the ones in his movies like Rocky, Khalnayak, etc; he will also don Sanjay Dutt’s look while he was in prison, and a few other looks.

DECCAN CHRONICLE. | SUBHASH K JHA

Ram Gopal Varma feels that the lack of feedback is killing the Indian film industry.

Ram Gopal Varma feels that the lack of feedback is killing the Indian film industry. “Filmmakers don’t get honest feedback on what they are making. If they did, how would you explain some of the recent big-budget fiascos that have nearly brought the studios down?” he asks.

Ramu says that the only film personality in India who welcomes criticism is Aamir Khan. “When we collaborated on Rangeela, he would constantly seek feedback from people he trusted, such as his sister Nusrat and cousin Mansoor Khan. He would then take notes with a pad and pen and ask me to act on the inputs. That’s how I learnt the value of test-runs and random feedback,” he divulges.

For his new film Sarkar 3, Ramu constantly sought feedback from all and sundry. “When I did a test-run for Satya, my brother’s friend had given me a 20-point list of the things that according to him were wrong with the film. I actually incorporated some of his suggestions and re-shot the film as per some of his advice. Looking back, I feel the film wouldn’t have worked if I hadn’t taken it,” says Ramu.

“There is a lesson to be learnt in the way Aamir constantly shows his films to random people throughout the shooting. Unfortunately, our film industry is working with blinkers on. This is why we’re so close to ruination.”

I agree with Qalandar on Sarkar 2 but beyond this there shouldn’t be twists in a film that go against the basic logical premises of the same. Otherwise the twist becomes ‘pornographic’, existing for its own sake. Whatever ‘shock’ such a twist might produce it must make overall sense within the world of the film.

Raees is number one on an all India basis but Jolly LLB 2 is tops in both Delhi / UP and East Punjab. It is almost 2 crore nett ahead of Raees in Delhi / UP but it could be that Badrinath Ki Dulhania surpasses Jolly LLB 2 in the next few weeks as it is doing excellent business in UP though has under performed in Delhi city. 30. Saturday Films Till The Release Of Baahubali
    Thursday 23 March 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The next few weeks till Baahubali will see the release of Saturday films starting with Phillauri this week and followed by the likes of Naam Shabana, Begum Jaan and Noor. There would have been Sarkar 3 as well which is in the same bracket no matter that the makers probably think there is some brand value but that has been delayed by a few weeks. Saturday films are the ones where which take a big jump on Saturday. None of these films have the elements to take an opening which makes Saturday all important. No matter what the opening 2,3 or 4 crore its about the growth and the trend.

The first in line is Phillauri which being a Punjab based film and the presence of Diljit Dosanjh will open better in Punjab and probably Delhi but its in Hindi and not in Punjabi so can’t do the sort of numbers his Punjabi films do in the circuit. The film looks in two parts from the promos with the earthy love story looking decent but then goes into a typical rom – com which is passe for the box office today. If Mumbai can score then this film will work as North will be on for sure if Mumbai is working and these two are enough for a film like this.

The problem with all these films is also that they are almost totally dependent on the theatrical business in India. The satellite will only stand a chance if they work theatrically and digital which is the fast growing revenue source also gets the best deals when its based on box office collections.

    • Typical rom-com passe just after they declared BKD the biggest hit of 2017 – LOL

    • The Sarkaar 3 dig here is amusing. Some things never change! As always my standard response to all of this stuff is that if something or someone is nothing what is the anxiety all about? Why does one constantly argue against ‘nothing’? Here it’s not about one film or the other doing well or not. It’s about the larger idea.

On another note BOI in recently years have also become remarkably relentless when it comes to attacking smaller films. I’m never quite sure whether this is just a Philistine attitude, utter stupidity, total dishonesty or a combination of all three. I suspect it’s the last. The idea that big films that fizzle out most after a week if not after a few days are somehow justifying their costs better than smaller films just because they get to bigger totals is surely a joke, and a rather stale one by now. But in any case if everyone is losing money on small films all the time why are there so many being made and more each given year? Just as a matter of pure common sense what does this mean?

      • You’ve made the cardinal sin of assuming common sense @ BOI.

Don’t you know ??? This happened after PIKU … and more so after PINK. Bachchan is BOI’s biggest problem , and they are not able to digest his recent hits with multiplex movies. So now attacking all metro centric films or small movies. BOI was celebrating multiplex hits only till bachchan started getting success out of it.

  31. CONFIRMED! Nimrat Kaur and Fatima Sana Shaikh to star in Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Bazaar’

Sakshma Srivastav | Updated: Mar 23, 2017, 12.46 PM IST

The makers of ‘Bazaar’, apparently, had a pretty tough time finalising the movie’s cast. First, Hrithik Roshan was approached to portray the protagonist, but the ‘Kaabil’ star turned down the role. Next, the makers approached Akshay Kumar but he too did not give the script a nod.

Just when the reports about the project being shelved started surfacing, news broke that Saif Ali Khan has been roped in to play the lead in the film. The film also marks the debut of late actor Vinod Mehra’s son, Rohan Mehra, who will play Saif’s younger brother on screen. Talking about the same, a source revealed, “The casting is done. Saif plays the older hero while Rohan plays the younger parallel lead. Arjun Kapoor was approached for it, but he didn’t have the dates they wanted to shoot for.”

And now, the makers have finalised on their leading ladies as well. Reports suggest Nimrat Kaur and Fatima Sana Shaikh have been locked by the makers, who are delighted to have them on board. “Nimrat Kaur has been offered the main leading lady’s part opposite Saif where she will play his love interest. There will be another young, fresh romantic angle with Rohan Mehra’s character. For that, Nikkhil has cast ‘Dangal’ girl Fatima Sana Shaikh. Nikkhil has loved her in ‘Dangal’ and feels she will be brilliant in this thriller too,” informed a source.

Set against the backdrop of the stock market and inspired from the Hollywood blockbuster, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘Bazaar’ will go on floors this August.
