Naam Shabana took a dull opening of around 15%. The opening collections are generally similar to last week Phillauri barring the Punjab and Delhi belt where Phillauri had opened to good and decent collections respectively. Hyderabad and Gujarat are a little better than Phillauri. This film has the presence of Akshay Kumar and although its not going to show in collections like it did in a Dear Zindagi (Shahrukh Khan) he will have added to collections, the problem is that Naam Shabana has nothing really going for it so without him the collections would have been even worse.
There is no brand value of Baby which is probably the reason this film has been made. The brand value only comes when films are liked by the audience and the theatrical and television results of Baby show that the puclic did not care for the film.
The film is going to find it a struggle at the box office as although the budget is reasonable even with Akshay Kumar, the acquisition price is far too high in accordance to the initial which gives the distributors no chance. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city.
BO update: Naam Shabana opens on an average note; business to pick over weekend

The Taapsee Pannu – Akshay Kumar starrer NAAM SHABANA after much talk and hype finally hit the screens today. Currently all eyes are on the film which is directed by Shivam Nair and is a prequel to the previously released film BABY, but will the film manage to recreate the success of its predecessor is the question.
Reports suggest that NAAM SHABANA has opened on an average note with occupancy rates during morning shows being pegged at 15%. The occupancy rate may increase towards the evening shows given the high anticipation for the film.
On the whole, though NAAM SHABANA which is a female centric film lacks the bite and punch that was seen in BABY, the film is expected to do well, given the fact that there is no other major Bollywood release in the coming week. Currently, NAAM SHABANA will have to rely on solid word of mouth to see an increase in business.

NEW DELHI: In a mouth-watering contest, India’s sole Olympic medalists in badminton PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will face each other in the quarter-final clash of the India Open Super Series 2017 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex today.
The live action will begin at 2 pm (IST) on Star Sports 2 and HD 2. The Saina-Sindhu encounter has been scheduled as the fifth match on the Court 1.
For once, I wholeheartedly support Virat Kohli — the aggressive Indian, not just the batsman.
Let’s look at the facts: David Hooks, a former Australian cricketer, died after a brawl at some pub in Australia. Ricky Ponting got a black eye in a bar room brawl in India, not Australia. David Warner punched Joe Root after a bar room fight — in England. And these are probably the least controversial personalities in Australian cricket.
This holier-than-thou attitude by the Aussies is sickening to say the least. If they think that it’s fine to sledge and cuss on the field and be friends off it, the Austrlian way as it is called, what Virat is displaying is the Indian way of handling things. Once a limit is crossed, he’s not willing to forgive and forget. Relationships are not a one way street; there are no unilateral rules of engagement and for the new, perhaps a tad aggressive, Indian, there are repurcussions that need to follow.
It’s a bit unfortunate because this series between India and Australia has been brilliant and will hopefully lead to greater things from some of the Indian players — K L Rahul and Jadeja, to be precise — in some ways, this could be their making as world class cricketers, but the acrimony between the two sides has taken some sheen off it.
I wouldn’t say that the new Indian side under Kohli is blameless but the Australians — and their captain, no less — were caught cheating, red-handed. They were also caught abusing Jadeja during the final Test, when he was trying to take his guard (a breach of ICC rules of conduct) and that too with the Australian captain right in the fray.
What Kohli has mentioned in his press conference is absolutely nothing in comparison. He has every right to express his personal opinion on his relationship with certain Australian players. They don’t deserve a single shred of Indian sympathy…
Umesh and Pujara were also good. KL Rahul needs to convert his 60s into 100s. He is very fluent though. Ashwin did good but I think he stagnated, and Jadeja did much better.
Rahane’s 4th innings knock was pretty good. Those two sixes off Pat Cummins were special! But, I believe, he’s earned an SD as a combined package — as a batsman (contributed in both innings at Dharamsala), as a fielder (took some really sharp catches; Handscomb’s catch was special) and as the captain of the side. I believe they mention that Rahul is the only batsman to get an SD, which seems fair.
The second Test in Bangalore was a special win but it did come down to the final test in the end. Had India won in Ranchi, Pujara would have earned his 3rd SD, most definitely, though Jadeja’s contribution would have still been bigger.
But as things stand, India didn’t win in Ranchi and it came down to the final test in Dharamsala, where Pujara played a role in the first innings but not in the second, where he was unfortunately run out for a duck.
Having said that, I think Pujara has contributed significantly in all 3 tests since Pune and does deserve an SD. His only failing came in the 4th innings at Dharamsala and that’s a tad unfair on him.
Impact Index mention that this series had echoes of the 2001 battle, and I agree with them, but in that series the SD went to Laxman and Dravid for the epic fightback in Kolkata — not the deciding test, which India won by 2 wickets. So it’s definitely a grey area in that respect.
There’s always going to be one game, one Test, that will decide the course of the series and it can be a subjective call to choose that Test match, although having said that, not many will choose the final Test match over Kolkata’s significance in 2001.
In the recently concluded ODI series between India and New Zealand, which stretched to the final game, Rohit Sharma earned an SD by virtue of playing a good knock in the 5th match — but he had failed in the previous 4 matches. He performed when it counted, which is what the rules account for, in Impact index scales. Maybe he got lucky or maybe he thrives under pressure, one can conclude on that towards the end of his career.
Fair enough. However, in the past I believe I’ve seen them rate performances from different Tests as SDs. For instance, from the 2004 series in Pakistan, Sehwag’s 309 and Dravid’s 270 were both rated as SDs even though Sehwag got his triple in the 1st Test and Dravid in the series decider.
For this series, Rahul (for his 90 (out of a total of <200) and 51) and Pujara (17 and 92) deserved a SD status for their performances in the 2nd Test. At least Rahul's performance in the final Test ended up as SD anyway.
It’s a bit odd (more than a bit!) that two different Test matches were chosen as series-defining. It has to be one game only. And barring anything exceedingly special (Kolkata 2001), the series decider should serve as the series-defining game. That’s what makes sense to me.
I agree that Pujara should have earned his SD for his performance in the whole series (Impact Index also award SDs for consistently high-impact series performances), not just his special innings in Bangalore. To me, that seems fair.
In Pujara’s case, just because he got run out for 0 in the final innings of the series, he was denied an SD. Even though he had been very high impact in both Bangalore and Ranchi. Also scored 57 out of 332 in the first innings at Dharamsala and it was his dismissal that sparked a mini-collapse until Jadeja (along with Saha) bailed India out.
Rahul fully deserves his SD status but Pujara’s contribution in this series has been higher than Rahane’s, and he probably deserves it as well. At least that’s what I think…
In other words, I think it makes more sense to look at consistency across the length of a series rather than just high impact performances in the series decider. The latter is also important but consistency is what keeps a team in the game — to force a series decider, in some cases.
If I look at the team’s perspective, consistency from a batsman or a bowler is what one would desire, more than anything else.
The system defines an SD as “The most important measure in this system -a high impact performance in a match that enables the player’s team to win or draw level the series or (less often) change the momentum in a series. Also awarded to other series where a player dominates more emphatically in 2 matches or more against an A-grade team. This is the true legacy of a player, in this system.”
I don’t think it’s looking at series-deciding Tests exclusively as series-defining. Which is understandable as there are quite a few series where the deciding Test ends up as a draw with the stellar performances coming in the 1st couple of Tests (for instance Dravid’s 233 and 72* in the 2nd Test at Adelaide 2003 or Laxman’s 96 vs SA in the 2nd Test at Durban 2010; both of which were rated as SD). Then there are series where there is no series decider because a team has already wrapped up the series after the second Test (like India vs Australia in 1998 where Tendulkar and Sidhu’s performances in the first Test were rated as SD). The way I see it, the system rates every standout match-winning performance in a live Test as an SD as long as the player isn’t a part of the series-losing side at the end of the series. Which is why I found it surprising that they didn’t end up rating Rahul and Pujara’s performances in the 2nd Test as SD.
Btw, I completely agree that it’s better to look at a player’s consistency across the length of a series rather than just the high impact/standout performances in any specific Test (series decider or not). But I don’t think they’d go down that route because that would mean rating a host of Tendulkar performances as SDs (like vs Eng in 2001 in India, or vs Australia in India in 2008, or vs WI in 1994, or vs NZ in India in 1999 and so on…) which wouldn’t be ideal for their pro-Dravid narrative 😉
Saket: the fact that the Australians have no leg to stand on (which I agree) is a bit different from whether Virat goes too far — he does. I do think the Kumble/Virat combo is good (they complement each other well), among other reasons because it removes the toxic effect that a guy like Shastri would have had on Virat and others in the Indian dressing room. In India today, brashness is sometimes prized for its own sake, as is “present-ism” (Shastri is a prime example of this, with his idiotic and ahistorical comments about new India’s aggression and attitude etc., completely ignoring what past teams have achieved), and the danger with Virat is that he can go down this route. He is such a gifted player, such a wonderful batsman, that I really do hope he doesn’t, but I do worry about that…
Blame this prequel on the media. Most critics who saw Neeraj Pandey’s action-drama, Baby (2015) praised agent, Shabana’s cameo in it. Her brisk action-sequence in a Kathmandu hotel room, when accompanying Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar) on a mission, provided the required adrenaline-rush. Taking the praise to their heart, this time around, the makers dedicated 148 mins, (really?) to the spunky agent. Sorry, but the running time is the film’s first inherent flaw. Frankly, Shabana shone in Baby because she was in a cameo. Someone missed the point, guys.
Sorry, but you won’t have the pleasure of hearing Vidya Balan talk dirty in her new film Begum Jaan. Playing the Madame of a brothel, cussing and abusing were a part of the Balanesque lexicon in this film. However the CBFC has stepped in to scrub the actress’ mouth clean.
In spite of being certified for an ‘Adult’ viewership and the brave nonchalant declarations of the film’s director about “no cuts” , Begum Jaan, the forthcoming film by Bangla director Srijit Mukherjee about a brothel at the border threatened with being torn apart by the partition of India into two nations, has been censored and slashed in a major way.
Several of the scenes have been gravely curtailed. These include a lengthy love-making scene and a sequence showing communal carnage on a bus. Says a source, “The love-making scene has been reduced by half. The CBFC found the pounding and thrusting which Srijit accentuated to show how sex is used to subjugate women, to be excessive even for an adult audience. In a sequence showing communal violence in a bus, the massacre has also been reduced by fifty percent. Srijit argued that an adult viewership can decide for itself whether the sexual and political violence is excessive. However the CBFC made it very clear that the two key sequences have to be reduced, or the film won’t be certified.”
Also ordered out were innumerable cuss words profanities and abuses. The director’s argument that the coarse language is an integral part of the language used by the prostitutes in the film fell on deaf ears
Counter-argues a CBFC source, “To remain in character as a prostitute the actor doesn’t have to keep using abusive language. Sharmila Tagore played a prostitute in Mausam. She used just one profanity in the film. And Shabana Azmi played the Madame of a brothel in Shyam Benegal’s Mandi. How many times did she use the ‘ch.d’ word-variations to punctuate her coarseness?”
All the references to the crude ‘ch’ Hindi word for copulation haven been ordered out of Begum Jaan. Reads the CBFC order, “Deleted the dialogues ‘behenchod’ (replaced with ‘behen ki jaat’ and ‘behen ki’), ‘madarchod’ (replaced with ‘madarjaat’), ‘bahen di loudi’ (replaced with ‘haraami’), ‘kudichod’ (replaced with ‘arrey oh’) where they occur.”
Errrrr….arrrey oh???!!!!
Curiously in Raj Kahini the original Bangla version of Begum Jaan, Rituparna Sengupta who played Vidya Balan’s character was allowed to say a lot of the above words.

All the partner multiplex and exhibition chains are apparently overhauling their screening systems to accommodate the film accordingly, as the film is scheduled to change the entire film viewing experience forever. After Akshay shared a poster of the film confirming its release date, Sanjay Gupta took to his Twitter and took a nasty dig at Shah Rukh with his opinion.

Rumour is on that Akshay Kumar took the decision to have TEPK release on 11th Aug becoz SRK film have moved to Diwali to clash with 2.0
Either way, its time for SRK to ponder upon for his desire to set up a clash since last 10 years, at least thats what the perception is. He has won all the battle. He keeps winning but lose friends at the same time. Think SRK.
Diwali is the best time to release srk-imtiaz film, no doubt about that. It makes more sense for it to take on 2.0 than tepk taking it on. Wont be surprised if this rumour indeed turns out to be true.
Such a move will hurt 2.0 more than anything else. Akshay’s chance of getting a big grosser is now diminished.
I think the current slot for the Imtiaz Ali movie is a very good one. The extended week-end of 5 days will probably ensure a very good initial. TEPK may be competition and it may affect SRK’s movie but only if it turns out to be a very good film AND if the latter turns out to be disappointing. It may affect the lifetime collections then as it was the case for Dilwale and Raees where the collections dipped completely partly because the films were underwhelming and partly because competition affected them. But still, a healthy initial is given for the SRK film and it will certainly guarantee a decent total at the very least.
With Robot 2.0, the very initial of the SRK film will be affected and it could mean that it may have no chance at all. 2.0 is a much bigger film, there will be the brand factor plus Rajni and Akshay Kumar’s own fans following. After Robot and Bahubali, it does seem that movies like these can work big time universally.
I don’t think it will make much sense for SRK to take such a risk with his film. His next release comes in December 2018 and his movies have been under-performing lately.
For Akshay Kumar if TEPK loses out or if it is rejected, he has something lined up a couple of months later to make amends and he then has another release before the end of the year. By the time SRK’s next film comes out after the clash he may have 5-6 films released by then. And not to forget that he is on a good run currently, his films are making money every 3 or 4 months.
The Independence day clash certainly is not good news for SRK, but it still makes more sense for both instead of a Diwali clash featuring 2.0.
For the producers of TEPK and Akshay Kumar, it seems like a wise move (contrary to what BOI are saying). They get a better release slot (Independence day vs Ramadan). They get publicity with the clash and the small film benefits. They are the under-dogs, so the pressure is less on them. The budget is low, so the extended week end can help them recover some money. Even if the movie does not work big but still ends up affecting the SRK film to a certain extent, for Akshay Kumar it is good because it prevents a direct rival from getting a huge grosser while he has enough movies coming up and he isn’t as dependent on the fate of this particular movie.
Diwali slot is good now since golmaal film has now been postponed. Diwali is a big weekend that can accomodate 2 big films easily. And 2.0 hindi version is not that big a deal. Rajni hardly has any following in bollywood market and Akshay’s reach is limited to 100 cr. How much did robo hindi bersion do? Those who like vfx based movies may show up for 2.0 but thats not a big base in bollywood market. A srk romance will certainly be a bigger draw in the extended diwali weekend.

National award-winning director Srjit Mukherji, who makes his Bollywood debut with ‘Begum Jaan’, the Hindi adaptation of his Bengali film ‘Rajkahini’, is known for being extremely thorough with his research. While shooting the Vidya Balan-starrer, he decided to keep the look of the characters real. And for that, the cast was advised to use minimal make-up.
However, some of the girls would cheat and turn up on the set with an evidently caked-up face. Srijit, being the taskmaster that he is, would notice it instantly, and check everyone’s make-up before shooting. Srijit recalls, “It became a ritual for a few days. I was like a school teacher who would check make-up and nails. I used to sit with wet tissues and wipe off all the extra make-up. Since the story is set in a different world, I didn’t want them to have heavy make-up and manicured nails.”
Akshay Kumar Presence Gives Naam Shabana A Lift

The presence of Akshay Kumar has given Naam Shabana a lift on its first day as collections are set to be around 4.75 crore nett. This has enabled the film to go wider than it would have normally gone but the big problem is occupancy is lower than films like Phillauri and Ok Jaanu and eventually its a content film which has to survive for a couple of weeks but you can’t at this low occupancy unless of course it improves a lot on Saturday and Sunday. The film will probably have one of the lowest collections ever for a film to release on 2000 screens or more. Akshay Kumar has probably added 2-2.50 crore nett to the film on day one.
The film is a costly acquisition for what the film is actually worth as the distributors must have been have felt Baby had some brand value so despite the first day collections being pretty decent (if you dont bring in the screens and occupancy rate) it still does not give the distributors much chance to cover unless there is huge growth tomorrow and on Sunday.
The distribution strategy seems a mess up for the film as eventually its a content film and with this strategy it will be a huge surprise to see this film sustain even if reports were good. Dear Zindagi released a few months back also got benefit of the presence of Shahrukh Khan but the release of that film was as of the content of the film and not a mini Shahrukh Khan film. Here the film has been released like a mini Akshay Kumar starrer and not as per content and its unlikely to pay dividends.
Frankly I am pleasantly surprised with the opening numbers of Naam Shabana. The way BOI has been thrashing it left, right and centre… I thought it will wrap it within 20cr. Max.
Here a 5cr opening (BOI always give low numbers to the film that doesn’t suit their narrative) is good enough.
This is indeed a good opening. Better than what ‘A-list’ actresses like Anushka Sharma (Phillauri), Priyanka (Jai Gangajal) have been able to guarantee as initial.
I think BOI are taken aback themselves. Everything from their previous thrashing of the movie pointed towards a 2cr start.
They are comparing it to DZ, Ok Jaanu but it is an action thriller and it has opened in the range of the usual John Abraham action thrillers, but with a female lead and without a traditional male lead, which makes it a commendable opening.

Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff are seen for the first time on screen for a short film Khujli in a different avatar.
Terribly Tiny Talkies (TTT), a channel on YouTube, which brings together distinctive filmmakers, has come out with the short film based on secret desires and hidden fantasies that were not discussed in a marriage of 25 years. The short film was released yesterday.
“‘Khujli’ is a light-hearted film. I loved the story and the way Sonam Nair (director) narrated it. I really enjoyed working with the team of TTT,” Jackie said in a statement.
Talking about the steamy scenes in the short film, Jackie said, “When your director holds a whip in her hands, it becomes easy for an actor to be kinky.”
Neena, who has worked in powerful and critically acclaimed projects like Woh Chokri, Gandhi, Gumrah, Saans and Ladies Special, has featured in a short film for the first time.
“Shooting for ‘Khujli’ was as much fun as reading its script. When actors have enjoyed the process of doing the film so much, I am sure the audience would enjoy it too. It was a great experience,” Neena said.
Sharanya Rajgopal, Chief Writer and Creative Producer at TTT, says Khujli is a different story that had not been explored by the platform before. “The monotony of a middle-aged couple’s life taking a risqué turn is what drew us in. The entire process of making this film has been a riot. Think about it, it could happen to any couple around us behind closed doors,” Rajgopal said.
“Right from the early stages of exploring this premise to roping in Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta to finally executing Sonam’s insane vision — this is one journey that we will remember for a very long time. This film is bold, funny and unique,” Rajgopal added.
He should attend Parliament more often (has 8% attendance against an average of 78% by MPs) and represent us in the parliament, for which he took an oath, accepted to represent us in upper house, for which we pay taxes and inf not for any of the above then for the country. 🙏
Jai Gangajal’s figures were reportedly inflated by producers. BOI had it at 4.5cr and it released in 2600 screens. So, it was a poorer initial.
When you look at Anushka Sharma’s initials in NH10 and Phillauri, I think any initial the SRK-Imtiaz Ali will get or Sultan and PK got can certainly not be attributed to her.
If Anuskha produces a big budget film with her in the lead and with some small timer opposite her, then we can compare. Of course that film’s fate will be doubtful.
Dangal has done 3.09 million NT$ which is equal to 0.103mUS$ in first weekend from 24-26 mar.it reqd 0.13m$ to break D3 before taiwan release.it must have broken D3 in overseas by now.

Naam Shabana Sets Itself Up Well For Sunday

Naam Shabana has set itself up well for Sunday with growth of 25-30% on Saturday. The film is looking at day two business of around 6 crore nett which is a decent number. The total in two days will be around 10.75 crore nett. Now is the real test on Sunday as the release is wide especially for this type of film and can you get the audience in and make use of the this wide release. The films with wider releases can grow more than the regular multiplex release on Sunday if the content is good enough.
The film looked like a bit of a no-hoper at its costs but now if mass can grow well on Sunday then the film can surprise with a good run. Naam Shabana performed best in Mumbai on Friday and on Saturday, Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Mysore have shown good growth. If the film can get to around 19 crore nett for the weekend it would be a decent number and a good first weekend result from where it opened on Friday morning.
The movie is let down by weak script and screenplay. I am not sure the need of Akshay in the movie. But since the movie is relatively weak, Akshay presence is helping in collections. He is literally dragging Taapsi in all his scenes.
just got back from N.S. LOVED it! It is fast-paced, predictable and Taapsee is in pretty much all scenes. Loved the villain and Danny-Bajpai-Anupam-Akshay.
It is a time pass watch; Baby is A grade, this is like B grade in implementation. I liked it enough but there are obvious deficiencies.

ps – I think it is made with sequel in mind in lines of Jason Bourne series. I think whole BoyFriend, Goa hotel, was a setup to recruit her.
The screenplay, dialogues are by Niraj pandey. I liked how the villain has ‘surgery’. It was old-fashioned fun the way tom cruise had face mask in M-I
I truly enjoyed it. Baby was new concept and this was spin off in expected ways. The newness that baby offered is gone but still lots of fast-paced fun…keep ’em coming. Love the genre and love female protagonists.
3 times he has beaten Nadal this year. That itself is quite a personal accomplishment for Fedex. He is skipping the clay season except for the French Open, which is a good decision imo.

While Abhishek Bachchan may not have been seen on the big screen recently, the actor has been keeping himself busy with his multiple sporting team ventures across the year.
That, however, doesn’t mean that his Bollywood sojourn is being neglected. The actor is reportedly getting quite a lot of offers in Bollywood, but has been choosing his scripts very carefully. Now we hear Abhishek will be seen in Priyadarshan’s next, which is titled Bachchan Singh.
A source close to the development reveals, “Abhishek has been approached for this film titled Bachchan Singh, which will be directed by Priyadarshan. The movie will go on the floors by the end of this year.”
Bachchan Singh will reportedly be produced by Rajat Rawail and Suneil Shetty. Abhishek, who was last seen in Housefull 3, is apparently not in any hurry to sign movies, but it would be interesting to see him in another ‘Bachchan’ movie, after Bol Bachchan.

The previous film was directed by John R. Leonetti. It followed the story of a couple that was plagued by Annabelle after welcoming the doll into their home. This time, David F. Sandberg has helmed Annabelle: Creation. He last directed by Lights Out.
Anabelle Creation stars Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman, Philippa Anne Coulthard, Lulu Wilson, Lou Lou Safran, Grace Fulton, Tayler Buck, Samara Lee, and Anthony LaPaglia in lead roles.
The film is slated to release on 11th August,2017. Annabelle: Creation shows how the real life Annabelle died in a tragic car accident before returning to her parents as a ghost. Although, after her parents allow her to move into a doll, things take an evil twist. Years later, they take in a nun and a group of girls, who soon find out about the demon living within the house.
Anabelle, originally a spin off from The Conjuring series, had managed to put up a good performance at the box office in American markets. The film had collected $37.1M, in spite of clashing with Ben Affleck starrer Gone Girl. The film showed a good grip over the audiences against the adult drama Gone Girl.
The Conjuring series has been a hit in India already but Anabelle Creation is releasing over the crucial Independence Day weekend where we are already witnessing one of the biggest Bollywood clash. Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film with Imtiaz Ali and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha are to release on the same day as Annabelle.
Looks like viewers have some difficult choices to make!

Naam Shabana had a reasonable first weekend of 17.75 crore nett over the weekend. The growth on Sunday was not really there at mass centres and it remained at low levels. The film has done decent business at multiplexes of the big cities over the first three days.
The weekend figures of this film are better than films like Rangoon, Commando 2 and Phillauri. In fact outside the cast films (Raaes, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Kaabil) these are the best weekend figures of the year. The collections of Naam Shabana over the first weekend are as follows.
Friday – 4,75,00,000
Saturday – 6,00,00,000
Sunday – 7,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 17,75,00,000
The problem for the film is the acquisition price which was paid for two reason probably the brand value of Baby which is not there as that film is media appreciated and not public appreciated and the guest role by Akshay Kumar. The latter gave a little lift to the film on day one but more importantly the brand value had to work to justify the cost. That was never going to happen as there was no brand value.
Presence of Akshay has helped the collections. If it gets to 45-50 cr from here it should be safe, considering its distribution price is around 25 cr as per some reports.
The collections are alright and the trending is decent. BOI are probably a tad bitter that it has performed better than their predictions. Or is it they have some kind of agenda against Baby? They had it at 83cr while Taran had it at 95cr. Maybe they have a problem against the genre because they have been negative regarding BO prospects of action-thrillers a few times lately. Or anything that doesn’t work big time in the north.
Critics may thrash a film they don’t like. But BOI are not reviewers. I am probably going to skip the film, myself, after going through some of the reviews. But BOI are BO experts. The figures should do the talking for them. Here, their early predictions have fallen flat. The figures are better than projected earlier. And when the figures and trending are decent, their commentary is still negative. The figures and rhetoric should at least accord with each other.
But still, the case here is not as bad as when DMD was releasing. That was completely another story. BOI had started giving negative reports about its trade prospects days before. Then it started thrashing the opening early on on Friday morning. During the afternoon they even came up with and quoted a 3cr opening day total. In fact, the producers numbers at the end of the day were at 6.2cr for the initial day and most other BO sources estimated the opening at 5.4cr.
On the next day, BOI revised its intial total to 4.5cr (which meant that they were off the mark by 50%). Bu it also meant that the intended damage was done regarding that small part of the audience who look at BO reports before going for a movie.
On Monday, BOI reported the film had crashed because it grossed around 2.5cr. It was the usual 50% fall (going by their own figures), but for them it was a crash! Most probably because the 5.4cr quoted by the other sources was right. Only then would the fall then be below the normal 50% range.
I think many people here can give several other examples of such dishonesty. I have only pointed out one here.
They are living in a world where a film needs to cover a lot of cost in first weekend. Film business for many films just doesn’t work in this way. Some films require a run of 3+ weeks to be profitable. It’s like expecting the opener in cricket to hit a boundary off the first ball. Some batsmen can, but many need time.
Watched Naam Shabana. Its an average movie in its genre. The trailers were better than the movie itself. Tapsee has done well. Akshay has a 15 min cameo, which was not neccessary and seemed forced. The decent opening weekend i guess is becoz the promos suggested a bigger role of Akshay. I doubt if this is going to trend well from here.

Guha throws in the towel and declares “Modi is set to be the 3rd most successful PM after Nehru and Indira”. Clever, eh? So, when you can’t beat Modi anymore, especially after the electoral results in March 2017, Guha protects his darling Nehru as No.1, Indira as No.2 and generously allows Modi a 3rd place in history. Laughable CLOWN! There is just one flaw here – Modi is not history yet. Modi’s legacy cannot be judged or written yet. The cunning Commie that Guha is, he also forgets another thing. Nehru was PM some 17 years straight. Indira was PM some 15 years in two stints. In contrast, Modi hasn’t been PM for three years yet. So this nonsense is only to pre-empt Modi from being recognised as the most daring and successful PM yet. Nehru was the most unimaginative failure as PM and I don’t intend to write more on him. As for Indira, she had her strengths but was a despot and the stain of Emergency disqualifies her from any recognition in a democracy. Indira also justified corruption as a universal phenomenon. Even anti-Congress people recognise as PV Narasimha Rao as a more successful PM than Nehru or Indira.
I wanted to rate Ramachandra Guha as “India’s 3rd biggest intellectual moron”. But I realise that he doesn’t qualify. He’s a mere pen-pusher and a Lutyens Crawler with the intellect that matches that of Sagarika. Modi has yet this term to finish and may get another term. I believe by the time he finishes as PM he might end up being rated as the most daring and successful PM of India so far. Guha and his Commie Pigs cannot defend their darling Nehrus and Indiras anymore. Guha is no intellectual. He’s just low down trickster that the media gladly peddles as “celebrated historian”. I realize this isn’t a sober piece, but worth mentioning that Guha is a respected historian, he is not some chap who just mouths off on Twitter or on TV — his “India After Gandhi” and, prior to that, his work on Verrier Elwin and a bunch of other books are superb. As a cricket historian, he has written one of the seminal books in sports writing (“A Corner of a Foreign Field”). Moreover, to call him a Communist is laughable: he is actually profoundly UN-Communist — he is most certainly a liberal; and as a liberal it is equally laughable to say that Guha is interested in defending Indira Gandhi — it is quite clear that the writer has not read the books Guha has written, else he would not have said it (might even have been worth it to check out GUha’s cover story for The Caravan a year or two ago, about the dearth of right-wing conservative intellectuals in India, as compared to other countries). Unfortunately, the Indian right does not believe in drawing any distinctions, and anyone who is at a remove from the Sanghi ideology is lumped together: so one never needs to read a Guha or an X or a Y, as long as one can use labels like “Commie”, “libtard”, “sickular” etc. I actually have read a fair amount of Guha’s writings, so I know what I am talking about.

And, if you pay attention, he seems to be saying all the right things as though everything that they had attributed to him in the past was a lie. The worst truth of this new order is that they, who received the finest education and other opportunities, and who consider themselves the most intelligent and informed among Indians, have been shown as inaccurate, unreliable and incompetent political analysts of their own nation. It appears that there is only one way left to use them as political forecasters. Listen carefully to what they have to say, for the outcome will be the very opposite.

There is no penalty for vigilantism in the country, and that trend has been in one (miserable) direction for decades (i.e. in favor of more hooliganism), and where issues like cow protection are involved, you will always get politicians AND people in the public defending the indefensible, so there is no penalty. MUMBAI: Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passed away here today after a brief illness. She was 84.
She passed away at her home in central Mumbai tonight, family sources said.
Born on April 10, 1932 here, Amonkar was recognised as one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and as an innovative exponent of the Jaipur gharana. A gharana is a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.
Amonkar’s mother was the well-known vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar, who trained under Alladiya Khan Saheb, the doyen of the Jaipur gharana.
While learning the finer points and techniques of the Jaipur gharana from her mother, Amonkar also developed her own personal style, which reflects the influence of other gharanas and was generally regarded as an individual variant of the Jaipur tradition.
Amonkar cultivated a deep understanding of her art, largely through extensive study of the ancient texts on music, and her repertoire was grand in its sweep.
She was known primarily for her skillful singing of classical khayal songs set in the traditional ragas of Hindustani music, but also performed the lighter classical thumri repertoire, bhajan, devotional songs and film music. Regardless of musical genre, her performances were marked by vitality and grace.
Throughout her career, however, Amonkar was both criticised and praised for her bending of the Jaipur tradition.
As she prioritised the expression of emotion in her music, she frequently departed from the gharana’s conventions of rhythm, ornamentation, and broader musical structure in order to intensify the impact of the music.
She aimed to infuse the emotional appeal of the more popular styles into the comparatively rigid classical tradition.
What a magical, regal voice she had — a huge huge loss; I never got a chance to listen to her live. There’s a version of “Rang so rang milao” I have that sears me every time I listen to it…
I think her father was muslim. I think. It will make you happy. If there is any hope ever…of hindu muslim or for that matter unity with muslim anywhere on global (pata nahi what the problem is but it is always with people from your religion…would you agree?) plane, it has to be thru’ music..thru’ arts. no wonder most mullahs are anti-music. Biz Talk Desi entertainers rule!
In the 1970s, when multi-starrers were a norm, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor had a new film hitting the marquee *every few weeks*. And, believe it or not, a majority of these films would hit the bull’s eye. The ratio of successful movies was at an all-time high then.
That set me wondering… Has the star power diminished with each decade? The stars that rule the roost today prefer to work in a limited number of films. A substantial gap between two movie releases is a must, they echo. Overexposure, in terms of film releases, is a strict no-no. Makes me wonder, what if Aamir, Salman, SRK, Akshay, Hrithik, Ranbir, Ranveer and Varun have a new film arriving every 3/4/5 weeks? Will these films lure the audience in hordes, like their peers so confidently achieved in the 1970s?
Times have changed, indeed! Clashes were a commonality in 1970s and 1980s, but it raises eyebrows nowadays. Today, two or more films staking a claim on the same date results in heated discussions within and outside the film fraternity. The industry gets divided there and then. This year, the clash of the giants [RAEES and KAABIL] created a lot of noise. Now SRK’s forthcoming film [with Imtiaz Ali] will lock horns with Akshay’s TOILET EK PREM KATHA. The ‘fan war’ on social media has already erupted. And I foresee this happening every time two biggies clash on the same date.
The first quarter of 2017 has just concluded and I feel, the outcome is *slightly* better as compared to previous years. We have had a few successes, which brought cheer in an otherwise grim and gloomy scenario. Desi entertainers were lapped up in a big way [JOLLY LLB2 and BADRINATH KI DULHANIA], while star power helped attract footfalls [RAEES and KAABIL]. But isn’t it ironical that the biggest disappointment was also a star-studded affair [RANGOON]?
A new trend seems to have emerged these days. Barring a film or two, a majority of films, starring known names, failed to embark on a healthy start at the ticket window. The biz gathered steam from Friday evening onwards, while the sustainability on Saturday and Sunday was solely dependent on the word of mouth and merits of the film/s. Amassing a big, fat total on Saturday and Sunday is a humongous achievement, frankly. Also, content [of the film] and connect [with the paying public] are of paramount importance.
A few prominent names are of the opinion that the frightfully expensive ticket rates are keeping a chunk of the audience away from cineplexes. Piracy is another thorny issue that’s made a dent in film business. Also questionable is the quality of most movies that are churned out nowadays. Hollywood’s penetration into the Indian market is also giving nightmares to dream merchants in Bollywood.
Genuine concerns, I agree, but here’s my rejoinder: Didn’t DANGAL release amidst demonetisation and all of the above? Most importantly, did the currency crunch hinder its run at the ticket counters? DANGAL emerged the highest grosser of Hindi cinema, setting new benchmarks at the BO, didn’t it? Let’s not forget, a good story, backed by star power and innovative marketing of course, will always find takers.
Before a film goes on floor, the makers of the project along with the cast and crew gather together for a muharat. Well, taking this a step further, Akshay Kumar who had already given his nod to starring the film Mogul based on the story of Gulshan Kumar, he decided to make the official signing of the contract extra special.
In fact Akshay Kumar who was shooting in Indore for his film at the famous Maheshwar temple invited the film’s producer Bhushan Kumar, head honcho of T-Series to officially sign the film contract at the famous 300-year-old Lord Shiva temple in Maheshwar. Commenting on the same, Bhushan Kumar added that signing the biopic based on his father’s life inside a Shiv temple was surreal and that there were no words to express what he felt.
For the uninitiated Mogul, is based on Gulshan Kumar’s rags-to-riches story, from being a household name with his devotional music to becoming the one-man music industry with T-Series. Produced by Gulshan Kumar’s wife Sudesh Kumari, the film will be directed by Subhash Kapoor and will star Akshay Kumar as the music mogul.

And now, this Independence Day, two big films are set to clash again. Akshay Kumar’s Toilet — Ek Prem Katha releases alongside the Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma-starrer film directed by Imtiaz Ali. This time around, however, there’s no tussle regarding the number of screens allotted for each film. Seems like SRK and Akshay have buried the hatchet because their films are releasing with equal number of screens across the country.
Distributor Rajesh Thadani says, “Both are big films so they will compete to get equal numbers of screens. They do have equal opening as of now, but it all depends on the hype that the films create closer to the release dates. After all, exhibitors want profit more than anything else and things could change closer to the big day.”
Speaking about the stars’ cold war, a source reveals, “In 2011, when Hema Malini threw a party, she invited SRK and Akshay. SRK had given a cold shoulder to Akshay at the party. The two have never gotten along. But they have resolved their issues and have decided to release their films on the same day.”

Naam Shabana dropped on Monday as it grossed 2.25 crore nett. The drop is around 55% from Friday and for content films which don’t open you can only afford to be 35-40% down. The occupancy of the film is down to very low levels and it will probably be out in the second weekend like what happenned to Phillauri last week.
The first week collections will be around 25-26 crore nett which will actually make it the fifth highest grossing Hindi film of 2017 in just one week but that is more to do with most films doing poor business. The collections of Naam Shabana over the first four days are as follows.

The film has fared best in Mumbai with business of around 6.50 crore nett in the circuit over four days. Baby had also fared better in Mumbai compared to the rest of the country so maybe that is why the spin off has also fared better in Mumbai.
Jagga Jasoos Likely To Change July Schedule

There has been the postponement of the Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet – Ek Prem Katha which has led to a clash in August with Shahrukh Khan. It also seems like the July schedule will see changes as its likely that Jagga Jasoos will release on 14th July. At the moment there are three films set to release on this date and if Jagga Jasoos also comes it will be four. The date is a normal day and the three medium budget films coming on the date are Chef, Haseena and Mom. The films are generally non cast films or at least with no saleable stars. Haseena has a star like Shraddha Kapoor but with no male lead its asking a lot for Shraddha Kapoor to open the film alone.
If Jagga Jasoos was to make it on this date then these films will have to find another date or clash. But looking at the face value of these films even a poor Ranbir Kapoor starrer on a bad day could collect more than the combined total of these films. It is going to difficult to find a date for these films if Jagga Jasoos comes as there is a good flow of releases in the second half of 2017 so its possible one or even two of them may clash.
Its actually surprising that these three films are coming on the same day but the makers probably believe that they can take the other film on and come out on top but Jagga Jasoos will be different proposition altogether.

One has to understand that in Baby it was Akshay Kumar who was leading the film; here it’s me who is only three-four films old in the film industry. Akshay is not even there on the poster of the film. He was barely present during the film promotions. He was there for only three days during the entire promotional tour. It’s just being outright unfair to compare Naam Shabana with Baby. If you are comparing a film that has posters with female leading ladies, then it’s fair. But don’t compare it to a film which has a superstar. That’s unfair.”
it IS a good movie. Total paisa wasul. I had lots of fun watching all the fight scenes and how the character evolves and becomes a recruit. Engaging. Different from usual fair and yet enough masala fair. Fast -paced. I didn’t get bored except in the semi-song situation. I liked the boyfriend in the beginning scenes. He is nice looking fresh face.
Who Will Play Salman Khan’s Daughter In His Next?
As per reports, a popular name from within the industry has already been finalised as the film’s leading lady!
Choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza is reportedly looking for a fresh face for his upcoming film, which stars Salman Khan in the lead. As per reports, the ABCD 2 director is teaming up with Salman for a dance musical featuring the superstar. The film will deal with a father-daughter relationship, where the father (to be played by Salman) is an ageing dancer and his 13-year-old ambitious daughter is eagerly waiting to step into his shoes! That sounds exciting! Isn’t it?
Well, if reports are to go by, Remo D’Souza wants to launch a fresh face with the film, who will essay Salman’s teenage daughter, even though the filmmaker has been keeping a hush-hush on the matter and has not yet confirmed the news. Naam Shabana got a little boost on Tuesday as it was a holiday for Ram Navmi in many states and collections went up by around 10% which is not a lot. The holiday is in on Wednesday in a few states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra but a low ratio of the total collections are coming from these states.

Shah Rukh Khan says he has always wanted to do different films, and that’s what he has tried to maintain through his 25-year-long career.
You have mixed and matched your film choices throughout your career. Of late too, you seem to be picking up different kind of films such as Fan (2016), Dear Zindagi (2016) and Raees.
You know, I had finished Chennai Express (2013), when suddenly, Farah (Khan; director) came up with Happy New Year (HNY; 2014), and I needed to work with her because I hadn’t for so long. So, I started doing that film. After doing two back-to-back happy-go-lucky, commercial films — regardless of whether they become blockbusters or not — I wanted to do a different film because I have always tried to maintain that in my career. And the same was the case with films like Om Shanti Om (2007) and Chak De! India (2007). So, more often than not, I try to do that (mix up films) unless there is no offer (smiles). If you aren’t offered a film such as Swades (2004), you can’t do it, so the offer has to come.
You’ve also worked almost without a break through your career.
Yes, and that’s because I can’t wait, as I like to keep working. I can’t sit at home waiting for six months because then I change my state of mind (laughs). After wrapping up HNY and Chennai Express, I really wanted to do something different. [The shoot for] Raees started but it got delayed by nine months due to my injury. Then, Fan was supposed to release in August (in 2015) but VFX took one-and-a-half year. We didn’t realise that it (VFX work) would take that long.
So, the plan was to have different kind of films coming out at regular intervals?
Yes, that’s why it [due to change in plans of all the films] seems like I did Fan and Raees back-to-back. Now, thank God for Imtiaz’s (Ali) film (yet untitled venture co-starring Anushka Sharma). It’s a love story. Else, people will think I’m doing just offbeat movies (smiles). It’s just about trying to maintain a mix. Some days, I’m really happy to do a HNY, or a Chennai Express. I enjoy them. They are great fun, and I like them because it’s not that I am a serious actor and I won’t do those films.
You told HT earlier that you like the process of cooking food and that you have some nice pans and pots?
I know it sounds very girlish (smiles). But then, I’m all for empowerment of women. I want to be equal to women. I want to go higher up to their level, instead of thinking that they have to go higher. But I genuinely want to cook. Imagine, if I open a chain of restaurants and stores, kitna business karunga main (smiles). Having said that, Juhi (Chawla) once asked me, ‘Why have you named your company, Red Chillies?’ And I was like, ‘just in case film-making fails, I’ll open a restaurant by the same name. Red Chillies Restaurant toh chalega hi (laughs).
People have enjoyed seeing you in different avatars in films like Chak De! India, Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express…
I love taking up different roles, and that’s why I love mad, comic capers too. I know they are unrealistic. It’s not like I am considering them to be anything else, but I like the entire idea of this ‘big film’ experience. So, I find films such as Now You See Me (2013) with all the magicians very interesting, because it’s over-the-top, weird and erratic. I also love [the] Die Hard [films], for instance. So, I like to be in that space, and then also do a little ‘offish’ film, which makes me happy as an actor. Both kinds of films require hard work.
Your last three back-to-back releases, Raees, Fan and Dear Zindagi, seem to have reinforced the fact that you want to experiment with your roles.
No, it [doing different kinds of films] is not like it was a planned decision. The actual line-up was supposed to be Happy New Year, Raees, Dilwale (2015) and Fan, before Imtiaz’s (Ali) film and Aanand L Rai’s next. So my plan was good, but as they say, God spoils all plans. I might suddenly seem like an intellectual, but I’m actually not (smiles).
You recently said that you work on your characters in secret and also keep your enactments a secret. Do you implement your ideas directly in your performances or do you share them with your directors?
I would definitely share something like what I did in My Name Is Khan (2010) or Suri’s voice (from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; 2008) with my directors after I practice it innumerable times myself. For instance, I even prepared how I would mouth ‘Taaniji’ (in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi). When Adi (Aditya Chopra) thought about it, I gave him three or four options. I can act it out for my directors too — the way I did for Imtiaz. He is the kind of a director, who would like me to enact a scene. So Anushka (Sharma; co-star in Imtiaz’s film) and I rehearsed our scenes sometimes even till four or five in the morning, because Imtiaz likes it [that way]. I am ready to do whatever the director wants. A lot depends on the film as well. Farah (Khan) and Karan (Johar) have known me for many years, so they write it [the scripts] in a way that is easier [for me].
People were surprised when you told HT that you’ve started learning to cook Italian food, and want to open a restaurant.
I have been telling my friends and colleagues that once I learn cooking, I’d love to call them over and serve them, because I love doing that. I think of acting too as ‘serving’. As an actor, when you serve and present your acting, you hope people like and enjoy it as much as you enjoyed making it [the film]. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Plus, you don’t impose yourself on people and be like accha laga ya nahi? (did you like it or not?). You just serve. I like to serve people in the house.
The ad had nothing to do with asking others to be tolerant…it was the commodity of a protest that pissed people off. It was a completely tone-deaf ad and it was just plain bad. And to complete the trifecta…it starred a ‘kardashian’ lol. 0 for 3…had to pull it.

The cumulative business in 2017 may be good but the success rate is just four successful films out of 52 releases. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the biggest hit of the first quarter followed by Jolly LLB 2. Raees under performed but was still a success. The film was a hit in the Overseas market. The Ghazi Attack was the surprise of the first quarter as it did pretty well in Mumbai circuit to emerge a success. The film did nearly half of its business in Mumbai circuit.
The shockers were Rangoon which simply had no takers and the initial of Kaabil which was so low for a big star film that it gave it no chance to succeed. The other major releases of the first quarter like Ok Jaanu, Commando 2, Phillauri and Naam Shabana (film had big fall on Wednesday which sealed its status) all flopped at the box office in India and Overseas. The classifications of the first quarter of 2017 are as follows.
It’s quite clear Raees’ classification is based on getting a respectable gross rather than the norm of acquisition cost.
If Raees is semi Hit then i would include Kaabil as average.
The CBFC seems to feel the same way as those who recently protested against a Muslim girl singing Bhajan on a singing reality show. In Srijit Mukherjee’s Begum Jaan which opens on April 14 the line “Allah kehke Bismillah. Naam Nabi Ka Holi” has been asked to be replaced by “Tan se khele ang rang daala Brij ki har bala”, the rationale for the switch over being …religious sentiments.
Apparently, we can’t have the name of the mighty Allah being referenced to Holi. A source close to the development explains, “Cross-religious references are all very well and a sign of liberal India. But we can never be sure of how the not-so-liberal India would react to this.”
For more politics of pacification a reference to a dargaah (religious place) has been changed by the CBFC to a saraai (inn) in Begum Jaan. “We can’t take any risks with religious sentiments,” says a CBFC source.
If this is true on Holi, it is outrageous — among other things, let’s not forget that the sensibilities of someone in Begum Jaan’s milieu in the 1940s might have been very different from those that inform the imbecilic orthodoxies that bedevil bourgeois Muslims and Hindus today. In the sense that, as anyone who has seen Rajkahini can attest, the whole POINT of the film is her brothel as a space “on” and straddling a border, literally and metaphorically — that space is threatened precisely because it won’t take sides (and is hence marked for extinction in the partitioned world emerging in the sub-continent around this time, and perhaps since the mid-nineteenth century). The censor board’s actions would commit violence to this ethos by working the logic of partition back into Begum Jaan’s own words!
Glad to see Manoj Bajpai getting interesting projects. He is a tremendous performer. Probably deserved to get better projects at times.
Watched Budhia Singh recently. It is a very good film. Technically as well as in terms of content. Much deeper that the regular sports biopic. Raises nuanced questions like fulfilling ones’s thwarted dreams through a child and snatched childhood. Bajpai is excellent, as usual. As I said, it is a very well-made film and very much recommended.
As great as Dangal is, I wanted to see more of these nuances and wanted the film to ask more questions. Not saying that one is a better film than the other, but I just felt Budhia Singh tackled some of these issues a bit more deeply and is darker. It was a bit what I expected from Dangal when it was announced but it turned out to be more entertaining, and left me a tad underwhelmed. Budhia Singh surprised me.
Even I saw it on tv, a month back. What is the use of good film and good acting if it cant run even for 3 straight days in theatres? A bigger star would have made a difference. A bigger canvas would have helped the film. Bajpayee has joined the ranks of Naseeruddin shah in terms of response to his films. Mostly heard and seen very less. Solo films are not for them. Maybe Neeraj Pandey’s film will do something for him. Even there, Siddharth, a non actor is pitted against him.

Ace filmmaker Neeraj Pandey is all set to gear up for his upcoming directorial venture which will feature Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee. After MS Dhoni, A Wednesday and Special 26 director Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming project based on true events, will be a 2018 Republic Day release.
Like Special 26, the 2013 crime thriller, which was inspired by the 1987 Opera House heist where a group posing as CBI officers executed an income tax raid on Mumbai jewelry and took off with “samples“ of jewelry and cash, this drama too is based on true events.
It revolves around the relationship between a mentor and a protégé. “These incredible characters exist and the incident actually happened. Neeraj was looking to explore a different kind of a story after MS Dhoni: The Untold Story. He has put together a great ensemble cast, along with Sidharth and Manoj,” said an insider.
The story is set in Delhi, London, and Kashmir. Neeraj who likes to shoot in real locations will be shooting parts of it in the Valley. It goes on the floors in May.
Sidharth Malhotra will be next seen Reload opposite Jacqueline Fernandez. The film is directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, who previously helmed movies like Happy Ending, Shor In The City and Go Goa Gone. Produced by Fox Star Studios, Reload is slated to release on 25th August 2017.
The film will clash with Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra starrer Meri Pyaari Bindu and Amitabh Bachchan’s Sarkar 3 on 12th May at the box office.
Since there is a ban on Pakistani artistes in India, Irrfan Khan alone will promote the film.

Agreed here. It’s a pity that good films like these are practically not heard of when they are released. Masaan is another example here. Would have never known about it, were it not for some international festival.
I think Bajpai is a tremendous actor. He has delivered some memorable performances, really. Shool, Satya, GOW and 1971 are tremendous performances as a lead. But he certainly is not the most sale-able as a lead actor.
The key for actors like him may lie in strong supporting roles. He was the best thing in Rajneeti, for e.g. Was very effective in S 26. He can really lift a good movie to another level with his performance. So, at least it’s a good thing to see that he gets a strong supporting role in a good project. It’s the least he deserves.
On Bajpai, I feel odd making a “personal” comment but I do think that he has lost so much weight of late that he has begun to look strange on-screen; crazily thin, in a distracting sort of way (perhaps because I remember how he used to look)…

It depends on Indo China relations which are now somewhat strained. There is a call to boycott chinese goods. By the looks of it, the relationship will face many challenges. Dangal, Tubelight wont be affected much because it is Chinese government which is in control, not the people of China and people of China are not as political as we may think.
Incidentally both srk and bajpai look very good here and the maverick yash chopra got the best out of them…..not only the classic acting part but in general looks/ scenery too. Unfortunately Farha ma’am with her dar- de- disco in 2007 sucked srk out of his body mass and with that regrettably his ability to act his natural self.
Aamir Khan refuses to release Dangal in Pakistan without national anthem
Aamir Khan decides not to release Dangal in Pakistan after Pakistan censor board asks for scenes featuring the Indian flag and Indian national anthem to be omitted.
Last year, theatre owners and exhibitors in Pakistan temporarily stopped screening Indian films after Pakistani artistes and technicians were banned by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) from in India. The controversial move was taken in the wake of political tension between India and Pakistan, post the Uri (Jammu and Kashmir) attacks in September.
However, earlier this year, Pakistan lifted the ban on Indian films and began screening them in the country. And a few days ago, local distributors from the neighbouring nation apparently requested for Dangal (2016) to be released there. Aamir Khan and the film’s team were “absolutely okay” with that, especially since Pakistani audiences have always loved Hindi films and Indian actors.
However, Hindustan Times has learnt that the release of the film couldn’t go through when a “surprising” demand came in from the other side of the border. A source says, “When the film went to the Pakistan censor board, they were fine with it except for two particular scenes towards the end — one in which the Indian flag is shown and another in which the Indian national anthem is played after Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) wins the gold medal. The Pakistan censors wanted the scenes to be edited out before they gave Dangal the green signal,” says an insider.
But Aamir — who is also the producer of the film — felt that the “demand for the two cuts was surprising, because the film isn’t jingoistic in nature”. The source says, “It’s a sports-based biopic with no direct or indirect reference to Pakistan. The film only highlights India’s nationalistic sentiment, so what is the reason to chop off those scenes?”
Aamir then decided that the film would not be released in Pakistan. Dangal is the Hindi movie industry’s biggest blockbuster with over Rs 385 crore at the Indian box office. “It will result in an economic loss to the tune of Rs 10-12 crore, as Pakistan is an important international territory vis-à-vis money, but he isn’t willing to edit the scenes in question. He is aware that not releasing the film could lead to piracy, but he is sure about what he won’t do,” adds the source.
We tried to reach Aamir, but he was not available for comment till the time of going to press. But his spokesperson confirmed the news without divulging further details.

This is just not true: levels of partisanship are such that every day one can find, on message boards, on TV, and in print, tons of people who will back what “their” party does, even if they were opposing it tooth and nail when the other side was doing it. Frankly, take Gaikwad — had he assaulted a Muslim who was accused of taking a buffalo somewhere, I guarantee you there would be gazillions of messages on the internet supporting and defending him (as we see with all these cases of so-called gau rakshaks); the level of hatred, nastiness, abuse etc. that one sees these days is just sickening. aside from al lthese controversies Qbhai: I have a question. Do you eat beef? No other muslim country eats beef (apparently it is haram in Quran shareef) according to Tarek Fatah. In any case, being with hindu majority, one should refrain from doing something purposely that would hurt majority sentiments. e.g. I would not consume pork (if I was meat eater) in muslim majority nation as a mark of respect.

Naam Shabana Has Dull Opening
Naam Shabana took a dull opening of around 15%. The opening collections are generally similar to last week Phillauri barring the Punjab and Delhi belt where Phillauri had opened to good and decent collections respectively. Hyderabad and Gujarat are a little better than Phillauri. This film has the presence of Akshay Kumar and although its not going to show in collections like it did in a Dear Zindagi (Shahrukh Khan) he will have added to collections, the problem is that Naam Shabana has nothing really going for it so without him the collections would have been even worse.
There is no brand value of Baby which is probably the reason this film has been made. The brand value only comes when films are liked by the audience and the theatrical and television results of Baby show that the puclic did not care for the film.
The film is going to find it a struggle at the box office as although the budget is reasonable even with Akshay Kumar, the acquisition price is far too high in accordance to the initial which gives the distributors no chance. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city.

BO update: Naam Shabana opens on an average note; business to pick over weekend

The Taapsee Pannu – Akshay Kumar starrer NAAM SHABANA after much talk and hype finally hit the screens today. Currently all eyes are on the film which is directed by Shivam Nair and is a prequel to the previously released film BABY, but will the film manage to recreate the success of its predecessor is the question.
Reports suggest that NAAM SHABANA has opened on an average note with occupancy rates during morning shows being pegged at 15%. The occupancy rate may increase towards the evening shows given the high anticipation for the film.
On the whole, though NAAM SHABANA which is a female centric film lacks the bite and punch that was seen in BABY, the film is expected to do well, given the fact that there is no other major Bollywood release in the coming week. Currently, NAAM SHABANA will have to rely on solid word of mouth to see an increase in business.

For once, I wholeheartedly support Virat Kohli — the aggressive Indian, not just the batsman.
Let’s look at the facts: David Hooks, a former Australian cricketer, died after a brawl at some pub in Australia. Ricky Ponting got a black eye in a bar room brawl in India, not Australia. David Warner punched Joe Root after a bar room fight — in England. And these are probably the least controversial personalities in Australian cricket.
This holier-than-thou attitude by the Aussies is sickening to say the least. If they think that it’s fine to sledge and cuss on the field and be friends off it, the Austrlian way as it is called, what Virat is displaying is the Indian way of handling things. Once a limit is crossed, he’s not willing to forgive and forget. Relationships are not a one way street; there are no unilateral rules of engagement and for the new, perhaps a tad aggressive, Indian, there are repurcussions that need to follow.
It’s a bit unfortunate because this series between India and Australia has been brilliant and will hopefully lead to greater things from some of the Indian players — K L Rahul and Jadeja, to be precise — in some ways, this could be their making as world class cricketers, but the acrimony between the two sides has taken some sheen off it.
I wouldn’t say that the new Indian side under Kohli is blameless but the Australians — and their captain, no less — were caught cheating, red-handed. They were also caught abusing Jadeja during the final Test, when he was trying to take his guard (a breach of ICC rules of conduct) and that too with the Australian captain right in the fray.
What Kohli has mentioned in his press conference is absolutely nothing in comparison. He has every right to express his personal opinion on his relationship with certain Australian players. They don’t deserve a single shred of Indian sympathy…

Umesh and Pujara were also good. KL Rahul needs to convert his 60s into 100s. He is very fluent though. Ashwin did good but I think he stagnated, and Jadeja did much better.

Umesh was a big surprise; Pujara and Ashwin are already established names and Ashwin, in particular, is a proven match-winner.
In contrast, Rahul and Jadeja have been floating under the radar. This is a good series report card:

Rahane’s 4th innings knock was pretty good. Those two sixes off Pat Cummins were special! But, I believe, he’s earned an SD as a combined package — as a batsman (contributed in both innings at Dharamsala), as a fielder (took some really sharp catches; Handscomb’s catch was special) and as the captain of the side. I believe they mention that Rahul is the only batsman to get an SD, which seems fair.
The second Test in Bangalore was a special win but it did come down to the final test in the end. Had India won in Ranchi, Pujara would have earned his 3rd SD, most definitely, though Jadeja’s contribution would have still been bigger.
But as things stand, India didn’t win in Ranchi and it came down to the final test in Dharamsala, where Pujara played a role in the first innings but not in the second, where he was unfortunately run out for a duck.
Having said that, I think Pujara has contributed significantly in all 3 tests since Pune and does deserve an SD. His only failing came in the 4th innings at Dharamsala and that’s a tad unfair on him.
Impact Index mention that this series had echoes of the 2001 battle, and I agree with them, but in that series the SD went to Laxman and Dravid for the epic fightback in Kolkata — not the deciding test, which India won by 2 wickets. So it’s definitely a grey area in that respect.
There’s always going to be one game, one Test, that will decide the course of the series and it can be a subjective call to choose that Test match, although having said that, not many will choose the final Test match over Kolkata’s significance in 2001.
In the recently concluded ODI series between India and New Zealand, which stretched to the final game, Rohit Sharma earned an SD by virtue of playing a good knock in the 5th match — but he had failed in the previous 4 matches. He performed when it counted, which is what the rules account for, in Impact index scales. Maybe he got lucky or maybe he thrives under pressure, one can conclude on that towards the end of his career.

Fair enough. However, in the past I believe I’ve seen them rate performances from different Tests as SDs. For instance, from the 2004 series in Pakistan, Sehwag’s 309 and Dravid’s 270 were both rated as SDs even though Sehwag got his triple in the 1st Test and Dravid in the series decider.
For this series, Rahul (for his 90 (out of a total of <200) and 51) and Pujara (17 and 92) deserved a SD status for their performances in the 2nd Test. At least Rahul's performance in the final Test ended up as SD anyway.

It’s a bit odd (more than a bit!) that two different Test matches were chosen as series-defining. It has to be one game only. And barring anything exceedingly special (Kolkata 2001), the series decider should serve as the series-defining game. That’s what makes sense to me.
I agree that Pujara should have earned his SD for his performance in the whole series (Impact Index also award SDs for consistently high-impact series performances), not just his special innings in Bangalore. To me, that seems fair.
In Pujara’s case, just because he got run out for 0 in the final innings of the series, he was denied an SD. Even though he had been very high impact in both Bangalore and Ranchi. Also scored 57 out of 332 in the first innings at Dharamsala and it was his dismissal that sparked a mini-collapse until Jadeja (along with Saha) bailed India out.
Rahul fully deserves his SD status but Pujara’s contribution in this series has been higher than Rahane’s, and he probably deserves it as well. At least that’s what I think…

In other words, I think it makes more sense to look at consistency across the length of a series rather than just high impact performances in the series decider. The latter is also important but consistency is what keeps a team in the game — to force a series decider, in some cases.
If I look at the team’s perspective, consistency from a batsman or a bowler is what one would desire, more than anything else.

The system defines an SD as “The most important measure in this system -a high impact performance in a match that enables the player’s team to win or draw level the series or (less often) change the momentum in a series. Also awarded to other series where a player dominates more emphatically in 2 matches or more against an A-grade team. This is the true legacy of a player, in this system.”
I don’t think it’s looking at series-deciding Tests exclusively as series-defining. Which is understandable as there are quite a few series where the deciding Test ends up as a draw with the stellar performances coming in the 1st couple of Tests (for instance Dravid’s 233 and 72* in the 2nd Test at Adelaide 2003 or Laxman’s 96 vs SA in the 2nd Test at Durban 2010; both of which were rated as SD). Then there are series where there is no series decider because a team has already wrapped up the series after the second Test (like India vs Australia in 1998 where Tendulkar and Sidhu’s performances in the first Test were rated as SD). The way I see it, the system rates every standout match-winning performance in a live Test as an SD as long as the player isn’t a part of the series-losing side at the end of the series. Which is why I found it surprising that they didn’t end up rating Rahul and Pujara’s performances in the 2nd Test as SD.
Btw, I completely agree that it’s better to look at a player’s consistency across the length of a series rather than just the high impact/standout performances in any specific Test (series decider or not). But I don’t think they’d go down that route because that would mean rating a host of Tendulkar performances as SDs (like vs Eng in 2001 in India, or vs Australia in India in 2008, or vs WI in 1994, or vs NZ in India in 1999 and so on…) which wouldn’t be ideal for their pro-Dravid narrative 😉

Saket: the fact that the Australians have no leg to stand on (which I agree) is a bit different from whether Virat goes too far — he does. I do think the Kumble/Virat combo is good (they complement each other well), among other reasons because it removes the toxic effect that a guy like Shastri would have had on Virat and others in the Indian dressing room. In India today, brashness is sometimes prized for its own sake, as is “present-ism” (Shastri is a prime example of this, with his idiotic and ahistorical comments about new India’s aggression and attitude etc., completely ignoring what past teams have achieved), and the danger with Virat is that he can go down this route. He is such a gifted player, such a wonderful batsman, that I really do hope he doesn’t, but I do worry about that…

Blame this prequel on the media. Most critics who saw Neeraj Pandey’s action-drama, Baby (2015) praised agent, Shabana’s cameo in it. Her brisk action-sequence in a Kathmandu hotel room, when accompanying Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar) on a mission, provided the required adrenaline-rush. Taking the praise to their heart, this time around, the makers dedicated 148 mins, (really?) to the spunky agent. Sorry, but the running time is the film’s first inherent flaw. Frankly, Shabana shone in Baby because she was in a cameo. Someone missed the point, guys.

Sorry, but you won’t have the pleasure of hearing Vidya Balan talk dirty in her new film Begum Jaan. Playing the Madame of a brothel, cussing and abusing were a part of the Balanesque lexicon in this film. However the CBFC has stepped in to scrub the actress’ mouth clean.
In spite of being certified for an ‘Adult’ viewership and the brave nonchalant declarations of the film’s director about “no cuts” , Begum Jaan, the forthcoming film by Bangla director Srijit Mukherjee about a brothel at the border threatened with being torn apart by the partition of India into two nations, has been censored and slashed in a major way.
Several of the scenes have been gravely curtailed. These include a lengthy love-making scene and a sequence showing communal carnage on a bus. Says a source, “The love-making scene has been reduced by half. The CBFC found the pounding and thrusting which Srijit accentuated to show how sex is used to subjugate women, to be excessive even for an adult audience. In a sequence showing communal violence in a bus, the massacre has also been reduced by fifty percent. Srijit argued that an adult viewership can decide for itself whether the sexual and political violence is excessive. However the CBFC made it very clear that the two key sequences have to be reduced, or the film won’t be certified.”
Also ordered out were innumerable cuss words profanities and abuses. The director’s argument that the coarse language is an integral part of the language used by the prostitutes in the film fell on deaf ears
Counter-argues a CBFC source, “To remain in character as a prostitute the actor doesn’t have to keep using abusive language. Sharmila Tagore played a prostitute in Mausam. She used just one profanity in the film. And Shabana Azmi played the Madame of a brothel in Shyam Benegal’s Mandi. How many times did she use the ‘ch.d’ word-variations to punctuate her coarseness?”
All the references to the crude ‘ch’ Hindi word for copulation haven been ordered out of Begum Jaan. Reads the CBFC order, “Deleted the dialogues ‘behenchod’ (replaced with ‘behen ki jaat’ and ‘behen ki’), ‘madarchod’ (replaced with ‘madarjaat’), ‘bahen di loudi’ (replaced with ‘haraami’), ‘kudichod’ (replaced with ‘arrey oh’) where they occur.”
Errrrr….arrrey oh???!!!!
Curiously in Raj Kahini the original Bangla version of Begum Jaan, Rituparna Sengupta who played Vidya Balan’s character was allowed to say a lot of the above words.
It is okay to abuse in regional languages and not okay in the national language?

All the partner multiplex and exhibition chains are apparently overhauling their screening systems to accommodate the film accordingly, as the film is scheduled to change the entire film viewing experience forever. They are also keeping medical staff on stand-by, as the experience could get too overwhelming for most audiences, who typically use just five senses.

Diwali is the best time to release srk-imtiaz film, no doubt about that. It makes more sense for it to take on 2.0 than tepk taking it on. Wont be surprised if this rumour indeed turns out to be true.
Such a move will hurt 2.0 more than anything else. Akshay’s chance of getting a big grosser is now diminished.

I think the current slot for the Imtiaz Ali movie is a very good one. The extended week-end of 5 days will probably ensure a very good initial. TEPK may be competition and it may affect SRK’s movie but only if it turns out to be a very good film AND if the latter turns out to be disappointing. It may affect the lifetime collections then as it was the case for Dilwale and Raees where the collections dipped completely partly because the films were underwhelming and partly because competition affected them. But still, a healthy initial is given for the SRK film and it will certainly guarantee a decent total at the very least.
With Robot 2.0, the very initial of the SRK film will be affected and it could mean that it may have no chance at all. 2.0 is a much bigger film, there will be the brand factor plus Rajni and Akshay Kumar’s own fans following. After Robot and Bahubali, it does seem that movies like these can work big time universally.
I don’t think it will make much sense for SRK to take such a risk with his film. His next release comes in December 2018 and his movies have been under-performing lately.
For Akshay Kumar if TEPK loses out or if it is rejected, he has something lined up a couple of months later to make amends and he then has another release before the end of the year. By the time SRK’s next film comes out after the clash he may have 5-6 films released by then. And not to forget that he is on a good run currently, his films are making money every 3 or 4 months.
The Independence day clash certainly is not good news for SRK, but it still makes more sense for both instead of a Diwali clash featuring 2.0.
For the producers of TEPK and Akshay Kumar, it seems like a wise move (contrary to what BOI are saying). They get a better release slot (Independence day vs Ramadan). They get publicity with the clash and the small film benefits. They are the under-dogs, so the pressure is less on them. The budget is low, so the extended week end can help them recover some money. Even if the movie does not work big but still ends up affecting the SRK film to a certain extent, for Akshay Kumar it is good because it prevents a direct rival from getting a huge grosser while he has enough movies coming up and he isn’t as dependent on the fate of this particular movie.

Diwali slot is good now since golmaal film has now been postponed. Diwali is a big weekend that can accomodate 2 big films easily. And 2.0 hindi version is not that big a deal. Rajni hardly has any following in bollywood market and Akshay’s reach is limited to 100 cr. How much did robo hindi bersion do? Those who like vfx based movies may show up for 2.0 but thats not a big base in bollywood market. A srk romance will certainly be a bigger draw in the extended diwali weekend.

While shooting the Vidya Balan-starrer, he decided to keep the look of the characters real. And for that, the cast was advised to use minimal make-up.
However, some of the girls would cheat and turn up on the set with an evidently caked-up face. Srijit, being the taskmaster that he is, would notice it instantly, and check everyone’s make-up before shooting. Srijit recalls, “It became a ritual for a few days. I was like a school teacher who would check make-up and nails. I used to sit with wet tissues and wipe off all the extra make-up. Since the story is set in a different world, I didn’t want them to have heavy make-up and manicured nails.”

Akshay Kumar Presence Gives Naam Shabana A Lift

The presence of Akshay Kumar has given Naam Shabana a lift on its first day as collections are set to be around 4.75 crore nett. This has enabled the film to go wider than it would have normally gone but the big problem is occupancy is lower than films like Phillauri and Ok Jaanu and eventually its a content film which has to survive for a couple of weeks but you can’t at this low occupancy unless of course it improves a lot on Saturday and Sunday. The film will probably have one of the lowest collections ever for a film to release on 2000 screens or more. Akshay Kumar has probably added 2-2.50 crore nett to the film on day one.
The film is a costly acquisition for what the film is actually worth as the distributors must have been have felt Baby had some brand value so despite the first day collections being pretty decent (if you dont bring in the screens and occupancy rate) it still does not give the distributors much chance to cover unless there is huge growth tomorrow and on Sunday.
The distribution strategy seems a mess up for the film as eventually its a content film and with this strategy it will be a huge surprise to see this film sustain even if reports were good. Dear Zindagi released a few months back also got benefit of the presence of Shahrukh Khan but the release of that film was as of the content of the film and not a mini Shahrukh Khan film. Here the film has been released like a mini Akshay Kumar starrer and not as per content and its unlikely to pay dividends.

Here a 5cr opening (BOI always give low numbers to the film that doesn’t suit their narrative) is good enough.

This is indeed a good opening. Better than what ‘A-list’ actresses like Anushka Sharma (Phillauri), Priyanka (Jai Gangajal) have been able to guarantee as initial.
I think BOI are taken aback themselves. Everything from their previous thrashing of the movie pointed towards a 2cr start.
They are comparing it to DZ, Ok Jaanu but it is an action thriller and it has opened in the range of the usual John Abraham action thrillers, but with a female lead and without a traditional male lead, which makes it a commendable opening.

Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff are seen for the first time on screen for a short film Khujli in a different avatar.
Terribly Tiny Talkies (TTT), a channel on YouTube, which brings together distinctive filmmakers, has come out with the short film based on secret desires and hidden fantasies that were not discussed in a marriage of 25 years. The short film was released yesterday.
“‘Khujli’ is a light-hearted film. I loved the story and the way Sonam Nair (director) narrated it. I really enjoyed working with the team of TTT,” Jackie said in a statement.
Talking about the steamy scenes in the short film, Jackie said, “When your director holds a whip in her hands, it becomes easy for an actor to be kinky.”
Neena, who has worked in powerful and critically acclaimed projects like Woh Chokri, Gandhi, Gumrah, Saans and Ladies Special, has featured in a short film for the first time.
“Shooting for ‘Khujli’ was as much fun as reading its script. When actors have enjoyed the process of doing the film so much, I am sure the audience would enjoy it too. It was a great experience,” Neena said.
Sharanya Rajgopal, Chief Writer and Creative Producer at TTT, says Khujli is a different story that had not been explored by the platform before. “The monotony of a middle-aged couple’s life taking a risqué turn is what drew us in. The entire process of making this film has been a riot. Think about it, it could happen to any couple around us behind closed doors,” Rajgopal said.
“Right from the early stages of exploring this premise to roping in Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta to finally executing Sonam’s insane vision — this is one journey that we will remember for a very long time. This film is bold, funny and unique,” Rajgopal added.

Jai Gangajal’s figures were reportedly inflated by producers. BOI had it at 4.5cr and it released in 2600 screens. So, it was a poorer initial.
When you look at Anushka Sharma’s initials in NH10 and Phillauri, I think any initial the SRK-Imtiaz Ali will get or Sultan and PK got can certainly not be attributed to her.

Naam Shabana has set itself up well for Sunday with growth of 25-30% on Saturday. The film is looking at day two business of around 6 crore nett which is a decent number. The total in two days will be around 10.75 crore nett. Now is the real test on Sunday as the release is wide especially for this type of film and can you get the audience in and make use of the this wide release. The films with wider releases can grow more than the regular multiplex release on Sunday if the content is good enough.
The film looked like a bit of a no-hoper at its costs but now if mass can grow well on Sunday then the film can surprise with a good run. Naam Shabana performed best in Mumbai on Friday and on Saturday, Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Mysore have shown good growth. If the film can get to around 19 crore nett for the weekend it would be a decent number and a good first weekend result from where it opened on Friday morning.

The movie is let down by weak script and screenplay. I am not sure the need of Akshay in the movie. But since the movie is relatively weak, Akshay presence is helping in collections. He is literally dragging Taapsi in all his scenes.

It is a time pass watch; Baby is A grade, this is like B grade in implementation. I liked it enough but there are obvious deficiencies.

The screenplay, dialogues are by Niraj pandey. I liked how the villain has ‘surgery’. It was old-fashioned fun the way tom cruise had face mask in M-I
I truly enjoyed it. Baby was new concept and this was spin off in expected ways. The newness that baby offered is gone but still lots of fast-paced fun…keep ’em coming. Love the genre and love female protagonists.

That, however, doesn’t mean that his Bollywood sojourn is being neglected. The actor is reportedly getting quite a lot of offers in Bollywood, but has been choosing his scripts very carefully. Now we hear Abhishek will be seen in Priyadarshan’s next, which is titled Bachchan Singh.
A source close to the development reveals, “Abhishek has been approached for this film titled Bachchan Singh, which will be directed by Priyadarshan. The movie will go on the floors by the end of this year.”
Bachchan Singh will reportedly be produced by Rajat Rawail and Suneil Shetty. Abhishek, who was last seen in Housefull 3, is apparently not in any hurry to sign movies, but it would be interesting to see him in another ‘Bachchan’ movie, after Bol Bachchan.

Here’s the brand new trailer of Anabelle Creation which tells us the story of the birth of this creepy doll. The film is a prequel to 2014’s Anabelle, that sent chills down our spines thanks to its brilliant execution.
The previous film was directed by John R. Leonetti. It followed the story of a couple that was plagued by Annabelle after welcoming the doll into their home. This time, David F. Sandberg has helmed Annabelle: Creation. He last directed by Lights Out.
Anabelle Creation stars Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman, Philippa Anne Coulthard, Lulu Wilson, Lou Lou Safran, Grace Fulton, Tayler Buck, Samara Lee, and Anthony LaPaglia in lead roles.
The film is slated to release on 11th August,2017. Annabelle: Creation shows how the real life Annabelle died in a tragic car accident before returning to her parents as a ghost. Although, after her parents allow her to move into a doll, things take an evil twist. Years later, they take in a nun and a group of girls, who soon find out about the demon living within the house.
Anabelle, originally a spin off from The Conjuring series, had managed to put up a good performance at the box office in American markets. The film had collected $37.1M, in spite of clashing with Ben Affleck starrer Gone Girl. The film showed a good grip over the audiences against the adult drama Gone Girl.
The Conjuring series has been a hit in India already but Anabelle Creation is releasing over the crucial Independence Day weekend where we are already witnessing one of the biggest Bollywood clash. Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film with Imtiaz Ali and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha are to release on the same day as Annabelle.
Looks like viewers have some difficult choices to make!

Naam Shabana had a reasonable first weekend of 17.75 crore nett over the weekend. The growth on Sunday was not really there at mass centres and it remained at low levels. The film has done decent business at multiplexes of the big cities over the first three days.
The weekend figures of this film are better than films like Rangoon, Commando 2 and Phillauri. In fact outside the cast films (Raaes, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Kaabil) these are the best weekend figures of the year. The collections of Naam Shabana over the first weekend are as follows.
Friday – 4,75,00,000
Saturday – 6,00,00,000
Sunday – 7,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 17,75,00,000
The problem for the film is the acquisition price which was paid for two reason probably the brand value of Baby which is not there as that film is media appreciated and not public appreciated and the guest role by Akshay Kumar. The latter gave a little lift to the film on day one but more importantly the brand value had to work to justify the cost. That was never going to happen as there was no brand value.

Presence of Akshay has helped the collections. If it gets to 45-50 cr from here it should be safe, considering its distribution price is around 25 cr as per some reports.

The collections are alright and the trending is decent. BOI are probably a tad bitter that it has performed better than their predictions. Or is it they have some kind of agenda against Baby? They had it at 83cr while Taran had it at 95cr. Maybe they have a problem against the genre because they have been negative regarding BO prospects of action-thrillers a few times lately. Or anything that doesn’t work big time in the north.

Critics may thrash a film they don’t like. But BOI are not reviewers. I am probably going to skip the film, myself, after going through some of the reviews. But BOI are BO experts. The figures should do the talking for them. Here, their early predictions have fallen flat. The figures are better than projected earlier. And when the figures and trending are decent, their commentary is still negative. The figures and rhetoric should at least accord with each other.
But still, the case here is not as bad as when DMD was releasing. That was completely another story. BOI had started giving negative reports about its trade prospects days before. Then it started thrashing the opening early on on Friday morning. During the afternoon they even came up with and quoted a 3cr opening day total. In fact, the producers numbers at the end of the day were at 6.2cr for the initial day and most other BO sources estimated the opening at 5.4cr.
On the next day, BOI revised its intial total to 4.5cr (which meant that they were off the mark by 50%). Bu it also meant that the intended damage was done regarding that small part of the audience who look at BO reports before going for a movie.
On Monday, BOI reported the film had crashed because it grossed around 2.5cr. It was the usual 50% fall (going by their own figures), but for them it was a crash! Most probably because the 5.4cr quoted by the other sources was right. Only then would the fall then be below the normal 50% range.
I think many people here can give several other examples of such dishonesty. I have only pointed out one here.

They are living in a world where a film needs to cover a lot of cost in first weekend. Film business for many films just doesn’t work in this way. Some films require a run of 3+ weeks to be profitable. It’s like expecting the opener in cricket to hit a boundary off the first ball. Some batsmen can, but many need time.

Watched Naam Shabana. Its an average movie in its genre. The trailers were better than the movie itself. Tapsee has done well. Akshay has a 15 min cameo, which was not neccessary and seemed forced. The decent opening weekend i guess is becoz the promos suggested a bigger role of Akshay. I doubt if this is going to trend well from here.

I wanted to rate Ramachandra Guha as “India’s 3rd biggest intellectual moron”. But I realise that he doesn’t qualify. He’s a mere pen-pusher and a Lutyens Crawler with the intellect that matches that of Sagarika. Modi has yet this term to finish and may get another term. I believe by the time he finishes as PM he might end up being rated as the most daring and successful PM of India so far. Guha and his Commie Pigs cannot defend their darling Nehrus and Indiras anymore. Guha is no intellectual. He’s just low down trickster that the media gladly peddles as “celebrated historian”. I realize this isn’t a sober piece, but worth mentioning that Guha is a respected historian, he is not some chap who just mouths off on Twitter or on TV — his “India After Gandhi” and, prior to that, his work on Verrier Elwin and a bunch of other books are superb. As a cricket historian, he has written one of the seminal books in sports writing (“A Corner of a Foreign Field”). Moreover, to call him a Communist is laughable: he is actually profoundly UN-Communist — he is most certainly a liberal; and as a liberal it is equally laughable to say that Guha is interested in defending Indira Gandhi — it is quite clear that the writer has not read the books Guha has written, else he would not have said it (might even have been worth it to check out GUha’s cover story for The Caravan a year or two ago, about the dearth of right-wing conservative intellectuals in India, as compared to other countries). Unfortunately, the Indian right does not believe in drawing any distinctions, and anyone who is at a remove from the Sanghi ideology is lumped together: so one never needs to read a Guha or an X or a Y, as long as one can use labels like “Commie”, “libtard”, “sickular” etc. I actually have read a fair amount of Guha’s writings, so I know what I am talking about.

More broadly, though, there is a certain mode of discussion: the blog post I am responding to is not written with facts in mind: it throws about insults, rage, slander, so to pick up on a particular fact — as if any fact is what has pushed this writer to a certain place on Guha — is not fair; there’s virtually no fact that Guha can cite that would lead this sort of writer to accept, forget what he is saying, but even his status as a genuine intellectual. The hatred of the word “intellectual” is such among many in India that people just stop thinking: under any commonly accepted sense of the term, Guha qualifies; he didn’t have to lobby anyone for that label, it so happens that the way the world is, if one can write several learned books, one automatically qualifies — one can dislike him, but let’s do so honestly, i.e. on the basis of ideological opposition (for instance, I believe he was much too sanguine about the notion that India must be governed from the center, and that the country’s innate diversity serves as a natural check on extremism being enshrined at the heart of Indian politics — I believe he did not adequately appreciate how this sort of politics can operate), rather than on the basis of misleading statements (“hey I hate him because he has his facts wrong”) or lies (“he’s a Commie”) and ad hominem attacks…

That was conveniently ignored in telegraph article which was tweeted by Guha. If you are Historian, I am assuming you should be knowing some of the basic things or, probably taking political position hitting below the belt to score brownie point? Isn’t the tweet same when a right winger says that Militants are doing atrocities justifying Military excesses? A fair position should be, that both are wrong.

Which I have watched. What stuck me and I found that pretty amazing….across the board…ALL muslims (liberal, mullah-types, all of them) criticised him for his liberal views. So basically seemed to me that minority religion is still very-very-very touchy on any sort of questioning or progressive ideas. He is quite famous in India among the majority religion (at least no one can say Tarek is righ-wing hindu!) so strange that you haven’t heard of him. Have you heard abt canada’s M103? They were, for long, awkward in India, but they had their islands where they could escape the nation. Now there is nowhere to hide, not even in literature festivals. This is a government that is everywhere. So they feel uncertain in universities, think tanks, cultural bodies, journalism, theatre, art and mainstream cinema, activism and in charitable works. They have lost beef too. In the past few days they have come to fear that their biometrics will be known to the government, and that they can be raided by taxmen on any pretext, though that was always the case. In the middle of all this, an unambiguous man of religion has become the chief minister of India’s most populous state. And, if you pay attention, he seems to be saying all the right things as though everything that they had attributed to him in the past was a lie. The worst truth of this new order is that they, who received the finest education and other opportunities, and who consider themselves the most intelligent and informed among Indians, have been shown as inaccurate, unreliable and incompetent political analysts of their own nation. It appears that there is only one way left to use them as political forecasters. Listen carefully to what they have to say, for the outcome will be the very opposite.

Munna: why would it stop? There is no penalty for vigilantism in the country, and that trend has been in one (miserable) direction for decades (i.e. in favor of more hooliganism), and where issues like cow protection are involved, you will always get politicians AND people in the public defending the indefensible, so there is no penalty. Heck, the likes of Adityanath and his Hindu Yuva Vahini group started out as vigilantes, following a long-legitimized model by other groups over the years, so I don’t think there is in any sense a recognition in Indian society that this “needs” to stop — it’s the opposite, that if “our guy” is doing it we will actually cheer him on.

MUMBAI: Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passed away here today after a brief illness. She was 84.
She passed away at her home in central Mumbai tonight, family sources said.
Born on April 10, 1932 here, Amonkar was recognised as one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and as an innovative exponent of the Jaipur gharana. A gharana is a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.
Amonkar’s mother was the well-known vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar, who trained under Alladiya Khan Saheb, the doyen of the Jaipur gharana.
While learning the finer points and techniques of the Jaipur gharana from her mother, Amonkar also developed her own personal style, which reflects the influence of other gharanas and was generally regarded as an individual variant of the Jaipur tradition.
Amonkar cultivated a deep understanding of her art, largely through extensive study of the ancient texts on music, and her repertoire was grand in its sweep.
She was known primarily for her skillful singing of classical khayal songs set in the traditional ragas of Hindustani music, but also performed the lighter classical thumri repertoire, bhajan, devotional songs and film music. Regardless of musical genre, her performances were marked by vitality and grace.
Throughout her career, however, Amonkar was both criticised and praised for her bending of the Jaipur tradition.
As she prioritised the expression of emotion in her music, she frequently departed from the gharana’s conventions of rhythm, ornamentation, and broader musical structure in order to intensify the impact of the music.
She aimed to infuse the emotional appeal of the more popular styles into the comparatively rigid classical tradition.

I think her father was muslim. I think. It will make you happy. If there is any hope ever…of hindu muslim or for that matter unity with muslim anywhere on global (pata nahi what the problem is but it is always with people from your religion…would you agree?) plane, it has to be thru’ music..thru’ arts. no wonder most mullahs are anti-music. I have the utmost love and respect for all the muslim musicians, kathak dancers…wish all terroists got training in classical hindustani music then terrorism in kashmir –jaroor khatam ho jayega….

In the 1970s, when multi-starrers were a norm, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor had a new film hitting the marquee *every few weeks*. And, believe it or not, a majority of these films would hit the bull’s eye. The ratio of successful movies was at an all-time high then.
That set me wondering… Has the star power diminished with each decade? The stars that rule the roost today prefer to work in a limited number of films. A substantial gap between two movie releases is a must, they echo. Overexposure, in terms of film releases, is a strict no-no. Makes me wonder, what if Aamir, Salman, SRK, Akshay, Hrithik, Ranbir, Ranveer and Varun have a new film arriving every 3/4/5 weeks? Will these films lure the audience in hordes, like their peers so confidently achieved in the 1970s?
Times have changed, indeed! Clashes were a commonality in 1970s and 1980s, but it raises eyebrows nowadays. Today, two or more films staking a claim on the same date results in heated discussions within and outside the film fraternity. The industry gets divided there and then. This year, the clash of the giants [RAEES and KAABIL] created a lot of noise. Now SRK’s forthcoming film [with Imtiaz Ali] will lock horns with Akshay’s TOILET EK PREM KATHA. The ‘fan war’ on social media has already erupted. And I foresee this happening every time two biggies clash on the same date.
The first quarter of 2017 has just concluded and I feel, the outcome is *slightly* better as compared to previous years. We have had a few successes, which brought cheer in an otherwise grim and gloomy scenario. Desi entertainers were lapped up in a big way [JOLLY LLB2 and BADRINATH KI DULHANIA], while star power helped attract footfalls [RAEES and KAABIL]. But isn’t it ironical that the biggest disappointment was also a star-studded affair [RANGOON]?
A new trend seems to have emerged these days. Barring a film or two, a majority of films, starring known names, failed to embark on a healthy start at the ticket window. The biz gathered steam from Friday evening onwards, while the sustainability on Saturday and Sunday was solely dependent on the word of mouth and merits of the film/s. Amassing a big, fat total on Saturday and Sunday is a humongous achievement, frankly. Also, content [of the film] and connect [with the paying public] are of paramount importance.
A few prominent names are of the opinion that the frightfully expensive ticket rates are keeping a chunk of the audience away from cineplexes. Piracy is another thorny issue that’s made a dent in film business. Also questionable is the quality of most movies that are churned out nowadays. Hollywood’s penetration into the Indian market is also giving nightmares to dream merchants in Bollywood.
Genuine concerns, I agree, but here’s my rejoinder: Didn’t DANGAL release amidst demonetisation and all of the above? Most importantly, did the currency crunch hinder its run at the ticket counters? DANGAL emerged the highest grosser of Hindi cinema, setting new benchmarks at the BO, didn’t it? Let’s not forget, a good story, backed by star power and innovative marketing of course, will always find takers.

Before a film goes on floor, the makers of the project along with the cast and crew gather together for a muharat. Well, taking this a step further, Akshay Kumar who had already given his nod to starring the film Mogul based on the story of Gulshan Kumar, he decided to make the official signing of the contract extra special.
In fact Akshay Kumar who was shooting in Indore for his film at the famous Maheshwar temple invited the film’s producer Bhushan Kumar, head honcho of T-Series to officially sign the film contract at the famous 300-year-old Lord Shiva temple in Maheshwar. Commenting on the same, Bhushan Kumar added that signing the biopic based on his father’s life inside a Shiv temple was surreal and that there were no words to express what he felt.
For the uninitiated Mogul, is based on Gulshan Kumar’s rags-to-riches story, from being a household name with his devotional music to becoming the one-man music industry with T-Series. Produced by Gulshan Kumar’s wife Sudesh Kumari, the film will be directed by Subhash Kapoor and will star Akshay Kumar as the music mogul.

Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan call a truce
Republic Day saw one of the biggest clashes at the box office with Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil releasing on the same day. And now, this Independence Day, two big films are set to clash again. Akshay Kumar’s Toilet — Ek Prem Katha releases alongside the Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma-starrer film directed by Imtiaz Ali. This time around, however, there’s no tussle regarding the number of screens allotted for each film. Seems like SRK and Akshay have buried the hatchet because their films are releasing with equal number of screens across the country.
Distributor Rajesh Thadani says, “Both are big films so they will compete to get equal numbers of screens. They do have equal opening as of now, but it all depends on the hype that the films create closer to the release dates. After all, exhibitors want profit more than anything else and things could change closer to the big day.”
Speaking about the stars’ cold war, a source reveals, “In 2011, when Hema Malini threw a party, she invited SRK and Akshay. SRK had given a cold shoulder to Akshay at the party. The two have never gotten along. But they have resolved their issues and have decided to release their films on the same day.”

Naam Shabana dropped on Monday as it grossed 2.25 crore nett. The drop is around 55% from Friday and for content films which don’t open you can only afford to be 35-40% down. The occupancy of the film is down to very low levels and it will probably be out in the second weekend like what happenned to Phillauri last week.
The first week collections will be around 25-26 crore nett which will actually make it the fifth highest grossing Hindi film of 2017 in just one week but that is more to do with most films doing poor business. The collections of Naam Shabana over the first four days are as follows.
Friday – 4,75,00,000
Saturday – 6,00,00,000
Sunday – 7,00,00,000
Monday – 2,25,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 20,00,00,000
The film has fared best in Mumbai with business of around 6.50 crore nett in the circuit over four days. Baby had also fared better in Mumbai compared to the rest of the country so maybe that is why the spin off has also fared better in Mumbai.

Jagga Jasoos Likely To Change July Schedule

There has been the postponement of the Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet – Ek Prem Katha which has led to a clash in August with Shahrukh Khan. It also seems like the July schedule will see changes as its likely that Jagga Jasoos will release on 14th July. At the moment there are three films set to release on this date and if Jagga Jasoos also comes it will be four. The date is a normal day and the three medium budget films coming on the date are Chef, Haseena and Mom. The films are generally non cast films or at least with no saleable stars. Haseena has a star like Shraddha Kapoor but with no male lead its asking a lot for Shraddha Kapoor to open the film alone.
If Jagga Jasoos was to make it on this date then these films will have to find another date or clash. But looking at the face value of these films even a poor Ranbir Kapoor starrer on a bad day could collect more than the combined total of these films. It is going to difficult to find a date for these films if Jagga Jasoos comes as there is a good flow of releases in the second half of 2017 so its possible one or even two of them may clash.
Its actually surprising that these three films are coming on the same day but the makers probably believe that they can take the other film on and come out on top but Jagga Jasoos will be different proposition altogether.

Naam Shabana is also being compared to Baby that starred Akshay Kumar as the lead actor. When asked about it the actor said, “I just feel sad. It’s extremely cynical to compare these two films. One has to understand that in Baby it was Akshay Kumar who was leading the film; here it’s me who is only three-four films old in the film industry. Akshay is not even there on the poster of the film. He was barely present during the film promotions. He was there for only three days during the entire promotional tour. It’s just being outright unfair to compare Naam Shabana with Baby. If you are comparing a film that has posters with female leading ladies, then it’s fair. But don’t compare it to a film which has a superstar. That’s unfair.”

it IS a good movie. Total paisa wasul. I had lots of fun watching all the fight scenes and how the character evolves and becomes a recruit. Engaging. Different from usual fair and yet enough masala fair. Fast -paced. I didn’t get bored except in the semi-song situation. I liked the boyfriend in the beginning scenes. He is nice looking fresh face.

Choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza is reportedly looking for a fresh face for his upcoming film, which stars Salman Khan in the lead. Naam Shabana Gets Little Benefit Of Ram Navmi
Naam Shabana got a little boost on Tuesday as it was a holiday for Ram Navmi in many states and collections went up by around 10% which is not a lot. The holiday is in on Wednesday in a few states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra but a low ratio of the total collections are coming from these states.
This wont make much difference to the film as after this holiday period the trajectory will be down. The film has taken its five day business to 22.50 crore nett with the week going to around 26 crore nett. The collections of Naam Shabana over the first five days are as follows.

INTERVIEW: Shah Rukh Khan: I can’t wait, as I like to keep working. I can’t sit at home
Shah Rukh Khan says he has always wanted to do different films, and that’s what he has tried to maintain through his 25-year-long career.
You have mixed and matched your film choices throughout your career. Of late too, you seem to be picking up different kind of films such as Fan (2016), Dear Zindagi (2016) and Raees.
You know, I had finished Chennai Express (2013), when suddenly, Farah (Khan; director) came up with Happy New Year (HNY; 2014), and I needed to work with her because I hadn’t for so long. So, I started doing that film. After doing two back-to-back happy-go-lucky, commercial films — regardless of whether they become blockbusters or not — I wanted to do a different film because I have always tried to maintain that in my career. And the same was the case with films like Om Shanti Om (2007) and Chak De! India (2007). So, more often than not, I try to do that (mix up films) unless there is no offer (smiles). If you aren’t offered a film such as Swades (2004), you can’t do it, so the offer has to come.
You’ve also worked almost without a break through your career.
Yes, and that’s because I can’t wait, as I like to keep working. I can’t sit at home waiting for six months because then I change my state of mind (laughs). After wrapping up HNY and Chennai Express, I really wanted to do something different. [The shoot for] Raees started but it got delayed by nine months due to my injury. Then, Fan was supposed to release in August (in 2015) but VFX took one-and-a-half year. We didn’t realise that it (VFX work) would take that long.
So, the plan was to have different kind of films coming out at regular intervals?
Yes, that’s why it [due to change in plans of all the films] seems like I did Fan and Raees back-to-back. Now, thank God for Imtiaz’s (Ali) film (yet untitled venture co-starring Anushka Sharma). It’s a love story. Else, people will think I’m doing just offbeat movies (smiles). It’s just about trying to maintain a mix. Some days, I’m really happy to do a HNY, or a Chennai Express. I enjoy them. They are great fun, and I like them because it’s not that I am a serious actor and I won’t do those films.
You told HT earlier that you like the process of cooking food and that you have some nice pans and pots?
I know it sounds very girlish (smiles). But then, I’m all for empowerment of women. I want to be equal to women. I want to go higher up to their level, instead of thinking that they have to go higher. But I genuinely want to cook. Imagine, if I open a chain of restaurants and stores, kitna business karunga main (smiles). Having said that, Juhi (Chawla) once asked me, ‘Why have you named your company, Red Chillies?’ And I was like, ‘just in case film-making fails, I’ll open a restaurant by the same name. Red Chillies Restaurant toh chalega hi (laughs).
People have enjoyed seeing you in different avatars in films like Chak De! India, Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express…
I love taking up different roles, and that’s why I love mad, comic capers too. I know they are unrealistic. It’s not like I am considering them to be anything else, but I like the entire idea of this ‘big film’ experience. So, I find films such as Now You See Me (2013) with all the magicians very interesting, because it’s over-the-top, weird and erratic. I also love [the] Die Hard [films], for instance. So, I like to be in that space, and then also do a little ‘offish’ film, which makes me happy as an actor. Both kinds of films require hard work.
Your last three back-to-back releases, Raees, Fan and Dear Zindagi, seem to have reinforced the fact that you want to experiment with your roles.
No, it [doing different kinds of films] is not like it was a planned decision. The actual line-up was supposed to be Happy New Year, Raees, Dilwale (2015) and Fan, before Imtiaz’s (Ali) film and Aanand L Rai’s next. So my plan was good, but as they say, God spoils all plans. I might suddenly seem like an intellectual, but I’m actually not (smiles).
You recently said that you work on your characters in secret and also keep your enactments a secret. Do you implement your ideas directly in your performances or do you share them with your directors?
I would definitely share something like what I did in My Name Is Khan (2010) or Suri’s voice (from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; 2008) with my directors after I practice it innumerable times myself. For instance, I even prepared how I would mouth ‘Taaniji’ (in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi). When Adi (Aditya Chopra) thought about it, I gave him three or four options. I can act it out for my directors too — the way I did for Imtiaz. He is the kind of a director, who would like me to enact a scene. So Anushka (Sharma; co-star in Imtiaz’s film) and I rehearsed our scenes sometimes even till four or five in the morning, because Imtiaz likes it [that way]. I am ready to do whatever the director wants. A lot depends on the film as well. Farah (Khan) and Karan (Johar) have known me for many years, so they write it [the scripts] in a way that is easier [for me].
People were surprised when you told HT that you’ve started learning to cook Italian food, and want to open a restaurant.
I have been telling my friends and colleagues that once I learn cooking, I’d love to call them over and serve them, because I love doing that. I think of acting too as ‘serving’. As an actor, when you serve and present your acting, you hope people like and enjoy it as much as you enjoyed making it [the film]. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Plus, you don’t impose yourself on people and be like accha laga ya nahi? (did you like it or not?). You just serve. I like to serve people in the house.

The ad had nothing to do with asking others to be tolerant…it was the commodity of a protest that pissed people off. It was a completely tone-deaf ad and it was just plain bad. And to complete the trifecta…it starred a ‘kardashian’ lol. 0 for 3…had to pull it.

The cumulative business in 2017 may be good but the success rate is just four successful films out of 52 releases. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the biggest hit of the first quarter followed by Jolly LLB 2. Raees under performed but was still a success. The film was a hit in the Overseas market. The Ghazi Attack was the surprise of the first quarter as it did pretty well in Mumbai circuit to emerge a success. The film did nearly half of its business in Mumbai circuit.
The shockers were Rangoon which simply had no takers and the initial of Kaabil which was so low for a big star film that it gave it no chance to succeed. The other major releases of the first quarter like Ok Jaanu, Commando 2, Phillauri and Naam Shabana (film had big fall on Wednesday which sealed its status) all flopped at the box office in India and Overseas. It’s quite clear Raees’ classification is based on getting a respectable gross rather than the norm of acquisition cost.

The CBFC seems to feel the same way as those who recently protested against a Muslim girl singing Bhajan on a singing reality show. In Srijit Mukherjee’s Begum Jaan which opens on April 14 the line “Allah kehke Bismillah. Naam Nabi Ka Holi” has been asked to be replaced by “Tan se khele ang rang daala Brij ki har bala”, the rationale for the switch over being …religious sentiments.
Apparently, we can’t have the name of the mighty Allah being referenced to Holi. A source close to the development explains, “Cross-religious references are all very well and a sign of liberal India. But we can never be sure of how the not-so-liberal India would react to this.”
For more politics of pacification a reference to a dargaah (religious place) has been changed by the CBFC to a saraai (inn) in Begum Jaan. “We can’t take any risks with religious sentiments,” says a CBFC source.

If this is true on Holi, it is outrageous — among other things, let’s not forget that the sensibilities of someone in Begum Jaan’s milieu in the 1940s might have been very different from those that inform the imbecilic orthodoxies that bedevil bourgeois Muslims and Hindus today. In the sense that, as anyone who has seen Rajkahini can attest, the whole POINT of the film is her brothel as a space “on” and straddling a border, literally and metaphorically — that space is threatened precisely because it won’t take sides (and is hence marked for extinction in the partitioned world emerging in the sub-continent around this time, and perhaps since the mid-nineteenth century). The censor board’s actions would commit violence to this ethos by working the logic of partition back into Begum Jaan’s own words!

Glad to see Manoj Bajpai getting interesting projects. He is a tremendous performer. Probably deserved to get better projects at times.
Watched Budhia Singh recently. It is a very good film. Technically as well as in terms of content. Much deeper that the regular sports biopic. Raises nuanced questions like fulfilling ones’s thwarted dreams through a child and snatched childhood. Bajpai is excellent, as usual. As I said, it is a very well-made film and very much recommended.
As great as Dangal is, I wanted to see more of these nuances and wanted the film to ask more questions. Not saying that one is a better film than the other, but I just felt Budhia Singh tackled some of these issues a bit more deeply and is darker. It was a bit what I expected from Dangal when it was announced but it turned out to be more entertaining, and left me a tad underwhelmed. Budhia Singh surprised me.

Even I saw it on tv, a month back. What is the use of good film and good acting if it cant run even for 3 straight days in theatres? A bigger star would have made a difference. A bigger canvas would have helped the film. Bajpayee has joined the ranks of Naseeruddin shah in terms of response to his films. Mostly heard and seen very less. Solo films are not for them. Maybe Neeraj Pandey’s film will do something for him. Even there, Siddharth, a non actor is pitted against him.

Ace filmmaker Neeraj Pandey is all set to gear up for his upcoming directorial venture which will feature Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee. After MS Dhoni, A Wednesday and Special 26 director Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming project based on true events, will be a 2018 Republic Day release.
Like Special 26, the 2013 crime thriller, which was inspired by the 1987 Opera House heist where a group posing as CBI officers executed an income tax raid on Mumbai jewelry and took off with “samples“ of jewelry and cash, this drama too is based on true events.
It revolves around the relationship between a mentor and a protégé. “These incredible characters exist and the incident actually happened. Neeraj was looking to explore a different kind of a story after MS Dhoni: The Untold Story. He has put together a great ensemble cast, along with Sidharth and Manoj,” said an insider.
The story is set in Delhi, London, and Kashmir. Neeraj who likes to shoot in real locations will be shooting parts of it in the Valley. It goes on the floors in May.
Sidharth Malhotra will be next seen Reload opposite Jacqueline Fernandez. The film is directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, who previously helmed movies like Happy Ending, Shor In The City and Go Goa Gone. Produced by Fox Star Studios, Reload is slated to release on 25th August 2017.

Agreed here. It’s a pity that good films like these are practically not heard of when they are released. Masaan is another example here. Would have never known about it, were it not for some international festival.
I think Bajpai is a tremendous actor. He has delivered some memorable performances, really. Shool, Satya, GOW and 1971 are tremendous performances as a lead. But he certainly is not the most sale-able as a lead actor.
The key for actors like him may lie in strong supporting roles. He was the best thing in Rajneeti, for e.g. Was very effective in S 26. He can really lift a good movie to another level with his performance. So, at least it’s a good thing to see that he gets a strong supporting role in a good project. It’s the least he deserves.
It’s a pleasure watching him on screen.

It depends on Indo China relations which are now somewhat strained. There is a call to boycott chinese goods. By the looks of it, the relationship will face many challenges. Dangal, Tubelight wont be affected much because it is Chinese government which is in control, not the people of China and people of China are not as political as we may think.

Incidentally both srk and bajpai look very good here and the maverick yash chopra got the best out of them…..not only the classic acting part but in general looks/ scenery too. Unfortunately Farha ma’am with her dar- de- disco in 2007 sucked srk out of his body mass and with that regrettably his ability to act his natural self.

Aamir Khan decides not to release Dangal in Pakistan after Pakistan censor board asks for scenes featuring the Indian flag and Indian national anthem to be omitted.
Last year, theatre owners and exhibitors in Pakistan temporarily stopped screening Indian films after Pakistani artistes and technicians were banned by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) from in India. The controversial move was taken in the wake of political tension between India and Pakistan, post the Uri (Jammu and Kashmir) attacks in September.
However, earlier this year, Pakistan lifted the ban on Indian films and began screening them in the country. And a few days ago, local distributors from the neighbouring nation apparently requested for Dangal (2016) to be released there. Aamir Khan and the film’s team were “absolutely okay” with that, especially since Pakistani audiences have always loved Hindi films and Indian actors.
However, Hindustan Times has learnt that the release of the film couldn’t go through when a “surprising” demand came in from the other side of the border. A source says, “When the film went to the Pakistan censor board, they were fine with it except for two particular scenes towards the end — one in which the Indian flag is shown and another in which the Indian national anthem is played after Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) wins the gold medal. The Pakistan censors wanted the scenes to be edited out before they gave Dangal the green signal,” says an insider.
But Aamir — who is also the producer of the film — felt that the “demand for the two cuts was surprising, because the film isn’t jingoistic in nature”. The source says, “It’s a sports-based biopic with no direct or indirect reference to Pakistan. The film only highlights India’s nationalistic sentiment, so what is the reason to chop off those scenes?”
Aamir then decided that the film would not be released in Pakistan. Dangal is the Hindi movie industry’s biggest blockbuster with over Rs 385 crore at the Indian box office. “It will result in an economic loss to the tune of Rs 10-12 crore, as Pakistan is an important international territory vis-à-vis money, but he isn’t willing to edit the scenes in question. He is aware that not releasing the film could lead to piracy, but he is sure about what he won’t do,” adds the source.
We tried to reach Aamir, but he was not available for comment till the time of going to press. But his spokesperson confirmed the news without divulging further details.

The BJP and its state governments must clearly rein in the gau rakshaks even while evolving a more coherent policy on cow protection and enforcing the anti-slaughter legislation. At best gau rakshaks can serve as police informers; the job of enforcement must be left to the forensic labs and the police.
Preventing cow slaughter does not mean licensing human slaughter, even if murder was not intended by the gau rakshaks who killed Pehlu Khan in Rajasthan.

This is just not true: levels of partisanship are such that every day one can find, on message boards, on TV, and in print, tons of people who will back what “their” party does, even if they were opposing it tooth and nail when the other side was doing it. Frankly, take Gaikwad — had he assaulted a Muslim who was accused of taking a buffalo somewhere, I guarantee you there would be gazillions of messages on the internet supporting and defending him (as we see with all these cases of so-called gau rakshaks); the level of hatred, nastiness, abuse etc. that one sees these days is just sickening. Even if you are talking about professional writers and columnists, I don’t think they have any more ethics than the aam public.

Yes Rocky…saw that in news item. Here is a sensible man! Tarek Fatah has been saying that for a long, long time (do not eat beef in India). Not sure why anyone would on purpose refuse to say Bharat ki jai or vande matram or deliberately eat beef or put sharia over democracy or religion before democracy. It is crazy. According to Tarek Fatah no other muslim nation eats it and it is supposed to be haram in Quran. He showed-quoted the verses too…somewhere on twitter…several days ago. Iss toh accha hai, ki aap ram mandir baneney de, beef industry khatam kare aur majority hindu aka dharma ko prevail hone de. You cannot subdue the majority by putting your mosque on top of ancient mandir. Let the mosque go to next door or another location. Let the people eat chicken-goats- and disallow pigs and cows to make all happy. and peace loving religion to prevail. Let us protect the cows to begin with in every way…not even drink its milk …so people don’t have to take laws into their hands.
Same logic would be: Allow peace loving kashmiri pandits to flourish, allow the dharma -dharmic people to prevail. Look what happened in Afganistan. They destroyed hindusim. Destroyed Bamiyan–buddist-buddha murtis that were world famous. And now what? They are now killing their own women and children. So basically adharma or lack of righteousness will impact you negatively, in long run. if your religion in inherently intolerant, where you call someone kafir etc, then you destroy kafirs and you will be unhappy and not in peace.
Hence, I also condemn the killing of that solo muslim by the mob-frenzy gau rakshak. Never take law in your own hands. This is not a hindu way. Hinsa.

aside from al lthese controversies Qbhai: I have a question. Do you eat beef? No other muslim country eats beef (apparently it is haram in Quran shareef) according to Tarek Fatah. In any case, being with hindu majority, one should refrain from doing something purposely that would hurt majority sentiments. e.g. I would not consume pork (if I was meat eater) in muslim majority nation as a mark of respect.

Ask you beef eaters to watch “forks over knives”. If compassion and ethics don’t move people, then science should! Eating animal products is injurious to health (including all dairy/yogurt/butter etc). Aise sangati maat rakha karo. Kuch vegan friends banao aur animal rights ke marches pe jaya karo. Yeh himsa aur himsak logo ke saath latakna bandh karo bhai.
Aur rahi baat Tundey ki, toh woh log legal sources se bhi meat kharid saktey hai, hai ke nahi bhai? hahaha

I asked Q because lot of muslims don’t eat beef. T.F doesn’t and according to him, it is not eaten in other muslim countries and india and indian muslims are exception. He quotes quran verses supporting his statement, etc.
Munna: This not having money is B.S. I was also a student and remained vegetarian and survived on bread-jam etc. Meat eating is expensive compared to bread-jam. Also once you eat meat (any meat) it is all the same. Ask the Aghoris. LMAO

Totally condemning the shameful killing, I feel it is not comparable to bunch of afgan men pelting stone at 14 year old girl (a day or two ago this happened). This killing (in rajasthan for the cow) is mob frenzy rather than premeditated act. though I condemn it, and feel ashamed. local govt. should come out and condemn it too.

Gaikwaad – President elections are around the corner. If BJP infuriates SS enough, they will vote against BJP candidate. SS sees BJP is taking turf from them and getting increasingly cantankerous to be even called ally.

Yhea, govt action is needed…a central policy. A blanket ban on all forms of meat, will make the vegan in me a very happy camper. This industry causes enviroment issues and there is notneed to eat something that was alive once…no need to have dead-bodies on plate or any form of animal product including milk (dairy cows are terribly abused in India and everywhere) when there are plenty fruits-veggies-grains to eat. but I guess I will be labeled extremist and animal kingdom will be labelling humans terroists.
As long as you consume cow’s milk, you are never be a true-gau-rakshaks!

Actor Irrfan Khan who spoke to the media opened up about the image and said, “My good wishes and prayers with him. I hope he gets well soon. If needed, I’ll donate one of my organs to him. I think he is the most beautiful person in the entire industry.”
“I saw his photo today and I was shocked. I pray to God for his good health,” Irrfan added. Khanna had a prominent role in Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol starrer Dilwale which released in December 2015.
