  1. Sarkar3 trailer looked great on big screen.
    In another news:
It is not too often that the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, sends out invitations to people to join her at the Buckingham Palace for cultural events. When one such invite comes in the mail, it is not usually turned down, unless you are Bollywood megastar, Amitabh Bachchan.

It has been reported that the Queen extended a rare invitation to the actor, who is arguably one of India’s biggest cultural icons, to the United Kingdom–India Cultural Year reception at the Palace. However, the invite was politely turned down by the star citing a “pre-scheduled commitments” as the reason behind giving the gala a miss.

Although Bachchan was “honoured” to have received the invite, his packed shooting and promotional schedules have forced him to sit this one out. Apart from shooting for Vijay Krishna Acharya’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ with Aamir Khan and Gaurang Doshi’s ‘Aankhen 2’, Amitabh will also be launching the trailer of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Sarkar 3’. He also has a number of film projects in the pipeline including Ayan Mukerji’s superhero film.

  2. Reality Check: The jigsaw pieces must fit!

In May 2016, we had said something that was then already overdue: that a Reality Check for and by the film industry was the need of the nanosecond! We had suggested that the industry must stop being a stubborn ostrich and—ASAP— set things right at all levels: content, marketing, budgets and audience economics.

Since then, nothing even remotely like that has happened. Filmmaking, if we describe it that way, is akin to fitting pieces of a jigsaw together—the content (story and treatment, star-cast and other allurements like music), marketing and above all the budgets vis-à-vis the content must fit.

Last but certainly not the least is that a film should be a ‘clean’ hit—when everyone down the chain—producers, distributors and exhibitors— makes a profit. In the four months that have just passed (December 2016 to March 2017), Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania have made it big, and Naam Shabana, released March 31, seems headed that way, of course vis-à-vis its slimmer budget.

On the other hand, Dangal may have become one of highest grossing Hindi films globally (it is the highest grossing in Indian theatrical business) but its repute is sullied by two aspects: one, the business it would have done with tickets at normal rates despite everyone wanting to watch it, and two, the strong buzz that Disney, which bought and marketed the film, did not earn much from it.

At face value, Dangal has neared Rs. 400 crore on the usual qualities of an Aamir Khan epic: a fresh and different subject from the run-of-the-mill mainstream, a whopping entertaining quotient, excellence in almost all departments and Aamir’s branding and charisma as actor-producer.

Added to that are the usual factors used by Aamir Khan with terrific results from Taare Zameen Par a decade back: a Christmas release (a season far better than Diwali as the majority population has no priority expenses on family and festivity), a vacation phase of at least a week, something in every film for children (who can pull in parents, like with Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK) and last but not least, inflated ticket rates for at least the first week. So when cinematic superiority meets marketing genius, there is no stopping the money rolling in, with demonetization becoming a laughable excuse.

Kahaani 2 bit the dust and also Wajah Tum Ho, and we began 2017 with OK Jaanu. We still cannot fathom why Kahaani 2 (with a rather pretentious social theme and no whopping twists) was called so as it was a completely different tale, and an inferior one.

Wajah Tum Ho set a dubious record with its re-created songs outnumbering the originals, thus highlighting its overall creative penury. OK Jaanu was excruciatingly tiresome, and after it flopped, we came to know that even its original film had not really been successful!

Rangoon, even when edited pre-release by 30 minutes, still did not make the grade. The clear reason this film nosedived (apart from a stretched narrative that might have been identifiable 50 years ago but not today) was that the budget was all wrong. Being ambitious is good, but Vishal Bhardwaj, in his first-ever non-dark film, suffered the same fate as so many others of his kind of filmmaking community—he had no connect with the mainstream audience that he had consistently alienated for 15 years in all his films. And with the film’s canvas, a mass-connect, including good music, was mandatory.

The welcome surprise packet was The Ghazi Attack, the Hindi-Telugu bi-lingual that has seen decent success vis-à-vis its tightly contained production costs. A brilliant and even pioneering film made realistically, sans frills (for it) like music and romance, this film was successful on the modest side, like a Happy Bhag Jayegi last year, relying only on positive buzz for its Hindi version.

We discard piffle like another reprehensibly warped film in the name of evolved cinema—Haraamkhor—and also Wedding Anniversary (which we hear Nana Patekar did only to be able to donate a chunk of his fees to charity), and come to three major films where the jigsaw-fit went missing: Befikre, Kaabil and Raees.

Befikre was not really a flop but fell short of being a hit. Aditya Chopra wrote a smart and refreshing film, breaking his own stereotype of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but his past branding caused an unfairly heightened disgust from his fans! The film was seen as “wannabe modern” and its lesser-known heroine’s (this was one role that most A-list girls would have probably nixed because of the skin show) lack of face-value was the final letdown.

However, those were the more obvious reasons. This writer feels that any film works or fails primarily at a subconscious level and the real reason for this film’s disconnect was that it tried to be contemporarily youth-driven in the first half but treaded conventional YRF terrain in the second. The message was simply that you could not take India out of an Indian, but it did not really entice either traditional or GenY audiences! Living-in stories have yet to find a mass connect here, but the film did not do well even in traditionally strong YRF markets overseas.

Finally, the hyped two: Kaabil and Raees. Let’s face it—their co-release, with Raees insisting on coming the same day—made sure that only the producers (from obvious reasons including pre-selling rights and star draws) laughed all the way to the bank. Most neutral audiences and even the critics preferred the former film, but the fact remains that both films underperformed and there was zero chance of either becoming profitable for everyone down the chain.

It is, perhaps, up to the people who invest moneys in a film to put their foot down and refuse to release two big films simultaneously no matter what the occasion, season or supposedly auspicious date. That will at least help salvage the worse/weaker film among them!

On the other hand, is it an impossibly tall order to stop making substandard films and let the jigsaw fall into place each time? Because we are getting yet more (of umpteen such) signals from the March 2017 releases. Like Jolly LLB 2 (which was an all-round improvement on the earlier film), Badrinath Ki Dulhania was another outright winner, going past Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania by leagues. So was, at its own modest level, Commando 2. If not viewed with the distortive mirror called nostalgia (which the shrewd audience did not), all three were eminently better sequels.

Naam Shabana, a spin-off-cum-kind of prequel, was another prize catch for the audience, which warmly welcomed this well-made entertainer with substance. Cynics opine that the film has done well because of Akshay Kumar’s cameo, which is a bit like calling the VFX the cause of Bahubali’s super success!

On the other hand, films like Phillauri and Anaarkali Of Aarah took beatings because they had little to grip, and had extreme disconnect in their regional musical flavours—we have heard they did very well in Punjab and Bihar respectively. The absurd Trapped, the atrocious Machine and the antique Aa Gaya Hero obviously stood no chance, but the beautiful Poorna lost out on face value—here was a motivational movie that should have been, perhaps, released with great publicity on television.

The jigsaw did not fit there either.

Baahubali: The Beginning Movie Review Replug – Scale, Gargantuan. VFX, Extraordinary. Content, Occasionally Gripping. Impact, Strong

Scale of ambition: gargantuan. Quality of VFX: out of the ordinary. Content: only occasionally gripping. Final impact: pretty strong. That, in a nutshell, is SS Rajamouli’s Telugu and Tamil fantasy epic Baahubali: The Beginning, which has been released nationwide in Hindi in collaboration with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The spectacular universe that the film conjures up is filled with magic, but the larger-than-life characters that populate its extraordinary expanse do not belong to any known mythic landscape. To that extent, Baahubali, driven by the titular superhero who pulls off mind-boggling feats both in love and in war, throws up many a surprise that isn’t altogether meaningless.

    • From the other thread, didn’t get a chance to respond to this question from Di before the thread closed, so with due apologies to Satyam, taking the opportunity here:

Re: “aside from al lthese controversies Qbhai: I have a question. Do you eat beef? No other muslim country eats beef (apparently it is haram in Quran shareef) according to Tarek Fatah. In any case, being with hindu majority, one should refrain from doing something purposely that would hurt majority sentiments. e.g. I would not consume pork (if I was meat eater) in muslim majority nation as a mark of respect.”

      A couple of factual corrections:

      1. Where did you get the notion that no other Muslim country eats beef? Beef-eating is extremely common in the Arab countries; it presumably was not traditionally available very much in the Arabian desert but now that it is in the form of burgers steaks, etc., it is consumed enthusiastically – the notion that it is not eaten outside India is completely incorrect. In the Gulf Arab states, North Africa, etc., Muslims are enthusiastic consumers of beef (just check out the per capita distribution of burger chains in those countries – the Gulf states are among the most densely served by fast food chains on the planet).
      2. I have never even heard that the Quran forbids beef-eating, and cannot believe it (I have not read Tarek Fatah so not sure what he is citing): that is inconsistent with my reading of the book, and the fact that it is eaten in even the strictest sharia-oriented countries (Saudi Arabia, Taliban-controlled Afghanistan), and no-one has ever raised a question about it. The Quran categorically forbids eating pork, and the sharia that builds off of that identifies other animals that are forbidden based on what’s in the Quran (e.g. certain kinds of birds may be eaten, certain may not be; certain animals are OK based on what hooves they have, certain are not; and pork is always forbidden) – even in the Shariah, I am unaware of any prohibition on beef. Beef, camel, goat are completely ok; dog, cat, etc. would not (even here there is some regional diversity – certain Muslim communities in Indonesia do eat dog).
      3. Pork: I don’t think you need to refrain from consuming pork in a Muslim-majority nation: I grew up in Dubai, and pork is routinely available (it’s just in a different section of the super-market with a “Not for Muslims” sign; although even if I bought it I am not sure how they would have checked). Pork is available in Egypt, Malaysia, Syria, Indonesia, Bahrain, Turkey, Jordan – that much I know. I cannot speak for other countries. I also happen to agree with this approach (it’s not perfect but better than countries like Saudi Arabia that ban pork entirely, as I believe they do): if Muslims don’t want to eat pork let them avoid it, but why impinge on the non-Muslims who wish to eat it? The nation might be Muslim-majority but individual liberty and rights are also something.
      4. In India, many Muslims in fact do not eat beef (such as my late grandmother), a lot depends on region (e.g. my grandmother was from Madras and would never eat beef; on the other hand, I have met tons of Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus who eat beef, same with Kerala as well; I have heard that in Kashmir, traditionally beef was shunned by Muslims but am not sure of that); buffalo-consumption has long been common among poorer Muslims and Dalit communities in North and Central India.

        • I am not getting into that (you’ll recall Di had brought up that analogy and had said one ought not to eat pork in a Muslim-majority country; funnily enough I remember thinking that the analogy isn’t perfectly apt, for the reason you mention), simply trying to correct the factual record on some of the other stuff that was said about Muslims in other countries and beef-eating.

As an aside, “Muslim-majority” or any majority is not the only consideration: Indonesia is as much home to the Hindus and Christians and other religions of the islands as to the Muslims — just because the latter are in a majority doesn’t mystically give them rights to impose on other people’s way of life. On that basis as well I don’t think it would be fair to ban pork or alcohol just because Muslims aren’t supposed to eat and drink that. Note where this logic gets us: a fanatic in a so-called Islamic country might say that Hindus shouldn’t be allowed to “worship idols” because idolatry is offensive in a Muslim-majority country! And then “reasonable” people could pop up saying “hey, why are you provoking the majority, you can worship in your home, why are you insisting on a temple?” etc. etc. The message is clear: you are a second-class citizen and must conform to what some “we” want (e.g. in some countries a temple that LOOKS like a temple can’t be built! Or it can’t be higher than the mosques, or some such thing). It’s outrageous, and ought to be resisted, whichever country we are talking about — stated differently, India or Indonesia or America is the land of whoever is there, equally, with no claim greater or lesser than anyone else’s.

That isn’t just my idealistic view, that is in fact the view enshrined in the Indian constitution, and in the constitutions and laws of many countries; certainly there are countries that openly, legally (i.e. in law) and in symbolism privilege some components of the national tapestry over others (even in countries with the more liberal constitutions, one can find these elements: in America until relatively recently, white was openly privileged; among the Hindu Right today, “Hindu” as a category is clearly privileged, and the aim is to get the State / law etc. to reflect this; in very many Muslim-majority countries, “Muslim” gets special privilege and status (Pakistan is an obvious example, as are Saudi Arabia and Iran, but problematically we can see this in (e.g.) Egypt as well) — can’t say I am sympathetic to any of these endeavors; my own lodestar is best expressed in Rabindranath Tagore’s lectures, collected in the excellent volume “Nationalism”).

Yup, and a pretty idiotic rule it is too: what sort of fast is this where OTHER people eating is threatening or offensive? This is exactly what happens if we start giving in to this logic of “I am in the majority so don’t offend me”; such majorities rapidly develop very thin skins and find ever newer ways to get offended (I remember even asking my mother in Dubai as a kid why no-one could eat during fasting — she didn’t say she was offended, I actually am not sure who is offended by this; she said it’s against the law — a telling distinction). These things are defended on the grounds of this or that sensitivity, but really they are there to show “others” their place, to stake a claim on “public space” as belonging to and privileging one sort of person. [We find non-religious examples of this sort of thin-skinnedness, not pointless thin-skinnedness but attempts to re-shape public space, everywhere in India: we have groups offended by “historical inaccuracies” in films, by books deemed blasphemous, by books that say anything the Sena doesn’t like about Shivaji, heck in West Bengal they banned a book of Bose’s own love letters, on the grounds that this offends the memory of…Bose. And because this is done, the traffic jam of groups rushing to say “We are offended!” is never-ending, it becomes a way to demonstrate that you too have arrived (“Maa, aaj mein ban karaa ke aaya hoon”). It has stifled the intellectual culture of our country: what new scholarship, new critical inquiry, creative ways of thinking about the arts, history will arise if people are afraid of the mob beating one up, or of ransacking an institute, as happened with the Bhandarkar Institute in Maharastra a few years ago? No wonder so much of scholarship is out-sourced to scholars working abroad, where they are safe (we should be ashamed of this). And this mindset is spreading to other fields as well.]

In my view the intellectuals are the ones who can speak difficult truth inspite of gettting fatwa for beheading or get beaten up by indian muslims at rabta event recently like Tarek Fatah did and left fo Canada. You should focus on gazwa-e-hind, sharia over democracy (triple talaq ) and all other deliberate acts of indian minority who act as if they are wronged people. I think the minority of India have better life in Indian democracy than they would ever in other countries be it dubai or bangladesh or pakistan!! “It is quite significant to note that the alleged remarks against Shivaji and his mother were made by James Laine, not by anyone associated with the Bhandarkar Oriental Institute and yet this Institute was ransacked. If the leaders of the Sambhaji Brigade really wanted to show their love for Shivaji they should have demanded ban on the books instead of ransacking of the famous Institute. But they chose to vandalise Bhandarkar Institute instead.
Thus the purpose was not so much as to protest against Bhandarkar Institute but to attack the institute considered to be the storehouse of Brahminical knowledge and controlled by the Brahmins. And that is why they raised the slogan “yeh to ek jhanki hai, abhi Shaniwarwada baqi hai” i.e. it is just the beginning and Shaniwarwada is yet to be attacked. 15. Agreed here. It was way below the level of the first 2 movies. I do admit I have a slight preference for the first part, if I were to choose one from the first two. But I can also understand anyone claiming he loves Part 2 more. They were both masterpieces. But Godfather 3 was a complete let-down. Al Pacino and Andy Garcia were alright but the film itself wasn’t gripping enough.

A couple of scenes apart, it was quite simply boring.

  19. This article makes it clear what went behind the choices the jury took:
3 revelations made by Priyadarshan on Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan and National Film Awards that stumped us
    Read it to believe it…
A lot has been said about Akshay Kumar‘s win at 64th National Film Awards. The winners were announced earlier today. Social media was abuzz with trolls who were angry with the decision and argued that the likes of Manoj Bajpayee, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan etc. and on the other side there were quite a few who thought that it was a well deserved win for Akshay Kumar. And then there were the third kind, who were left confused and didn’t know what to make of all the confusing development happening around them. This article is for them. So without further ado, here are three revelations made by the Jury Chairperson of 64th National Film Awards, Priyadarshan:

Akshay Kumar won the award for both Rustom as well as Airlift

Talking about the disputed category he said, “For the Best Actor category, we had four people in the final round. Akshay had two films (‘Airlift’ and ‘Rustom’). Mohanlal had three films. Besides them, two other Bengali actors were there. Akshay and Mohanlal were the main two contenders.” He also added, “Akshay has won the Best Actor award for both Airlift and Rustom. For technical reasons only Rustom is mentioned in the list of awardees. But he has given contrasting and extremely sensitive performances in both Airlift and Rustom, and we thought it was only fair to honour him for both!”

Justifying their choice of the winner, he said: “Sometimes, an actor looks impressive because of a tailor-made role. But that’s not an actor. An actor is somebody who does different roles and survives for years… So considering that we found Akshay to be the suitable one.”

Going solely by his statement, looks like it was more of Lifetime Achievement Award, than that for a performance. Also why weren’t Aamir Khan and Manoj Bajpayee even in the contention. They, too, have done various roles and have survived for years. Also read: Jury chairperson Priyadarshan now claims Akshay Kumar won National award for both Rustom and Airlift, leaving us confused

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was in contention for Best Actress

Talking about the best actress category, which was won by actress Surabhi CM for Malayalam film Minnaminungu-The Firefly, he dropped a bomb when he said if not for Surabhi, the award would have gone to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Sarabjit. He said, “For the Best Actress Award, more than the body of work the performance was considered. Also, there weren’t many actresses who were part of a lot of films and put up great performances. Surabhi’s only competition was with Aishwarya Rai for Sarabjit. Surabhi clinched the award as she brilliantly performed her role of a non-glamourous Indian woman and carried the film on her shoulders.”

The ace filmmaker also added that this year’s jury stressed on the content and making of the movies. “Some of the films that didn’t get commercial recognition were made well and some that weren’t made well had good content. We looked at movies that had good content and were made well,” he concluded.

Well what can I say, I guess he didn’t watch any of Alia Bhatt’s, Radhika Apte’s and Tannishtha Chatterjee’s performance last year.

  20. Now that National Awards have redeemed itself by coming up with most fair winners, esp those in Best actor, I am wondering what the paid awards must be wondering now.

I also understand that these selections can never be objective. There is always an element of current favourite theme and the same goes for Oscars as well.
Personally I felt the only reason Rustom was watchable was because of Akshay Kumar. He was a transformed person when in uniform. Airlift was a far greater film and his role there was award winning too and for a normal viewer, I would pick Airlift’s performance as a notch above Rustom’s.
As I said a jury led by a director par excellence Priyadarshan has to be applauded for their breaking the shackle moment in the awards history in India.
On Akshay Kumar, one can say that if there were one star from Hindi film that deserves more, it’s him. He has been ignored several time. For me it’s Rehman winning oscars kind of moment for me- Jai Ho was not his best and why he did not get for better work earlier?
I want to know the list of jury members who were in charge earlier!

    • Akshay winning an award was as bad as Saif winning for Hum Tum. It is pretty clear that Aamir is paying for his intolerance comment. Rustom was not even Akshays best acting performance last year. He was better in Airlift and the Thums Up Ad..But then he supported the current government for their intolerance so has to be suitably compensated. This is a joke..nothing else…and who better than Priyadarshan at the helm to hand out the dollies. Mohanlal was fantastic in Oopam, a movie which unfortunately he couldn’t give an award to as it was directed by Priyadarshan himself..Naveen I am sure you also will agree that Akshay Kumars Rustom act was not the best acting performance at a national level…

      • Akshay is lucky Priyadarshan gave this award to him. Her performance in Rustom was nowhere close to Aamir, it trailed Salman in Sultan as welll. True Akshay should only release movies next year, as long as Priyadarshan is Chairman of jury, it should be a cakewalk for Akshay. Only Priyadarshan and Sajid Khan would have bestowed this on Akshay

      • He’s won it for both Rustom and Airlift, it seems. I can live with the fact that he got it for Airlift because the performance was very good there. No comparison possible for the performance in Airlift with that of Saif in Hum Tum. Giving Saif that award, in my eyes, removed all the credibility of these awards. And this came at a time when Aamir said that he only believed in the credibility of the National Awards in India.

If Akshay Kumar won it for Airlift, then fair enough. He was very good in there. If they had mentioned Airlift for the film, there would have been less controversy.

I do think that Aamir is definitely being boycotted for awards since quite a long time. Not that I think he cares too much about them. I don’t think he bothers about them. He doesn’t even turn up to pick it up when he wins. I remember even Devgan and Sunny Deol not turning up for Screen awards when they won it (for Company and Gadar respectively). They had already said they don’t believe in these awards.

I don’t think Aamir would turn up to pick up any award anyway. The organisers simply opt for someone else who will attend at the very least. With Filmfare, it is even worst. They choose people who are willing to dance on stage or host the show!

  21. Baahubali Re-Run Falters – Other New Releases Dull
    Saturday 08 April 2016 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Baahubali (Hindi) had a re – run on a wide release but was a bit of disaster but this makes no difference to Baahubali Part 2 as that film is hugely awaited in Hindi as well as other languages. A rerun of a film which has been shown on television many times and to huge audiences when on peak time is not going to find an audience in theatres. The ticket rates are very high so there is no repeat audience for any blockbuster be it the biggest of recent times. Re – runs did good business until the mid nineties but when ticket prices started increasing heavily from 1994 onwards this audience died for most films barring exceptions like Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Gadar – Ek Prem Katha.

Baahubali (Hindi) in its re-run collected around 40-50 lakhs nett on day one and there were even shows cancelled due to lack of audience. But this was still much better than the other new Hindi releases.

There were seven new releases which hit the screens Baazi Zindagi Ki, Blue Mountains, Kehkashan, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, Mahami Rah Babi Ki, Mirza Juliet and Mukti Bhawan.

The only two which managed to get over 10 lakhs nett were Laali Ki Shaadi Main Laadoo Deewana and Mirza Juliet with both films looking at business around the 15-20 lakhs nett mark. It was the poorest week of the year so far at the box office.

      • I don’t think these collections matter. We are talking about a film that has been watched by almost everyone (whether in theatres or online or on DVD or then on tv). As much as I liked the first part, I am not going to re-visit it again in a theatre now. Re-runs have no chance to work these days when the trend is that people move on quickly from one movie to another and a few weeks run is the best a movie can hope for.

BOI are right for once, in that the second part is very much awaited. Remember, last time they had dismissed the film before its release but the film took everyone by surprise, trended extremely well and even affected collections of BB to a certain extent.

While Robot made around 20cr, this one made nearly 120cr, which was simply unheard of for a south film in the ‘northern’ market.

  22. Naam Shabana Day Eight Business – Holdover Releases Update
    Saturday 08 April 2016 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Naam Shabana got the advantage of weak competition in its second week as it grossed around 1.25 crore nett which is 20% down from Thursday and around 75% down from day one which is not bad as over the week this drop figure can come down. The business of the film is now 27.25 crore nett and it should cross 30 crore nett by the end of the weekend. The film should now be able to go to around 35 crore nett as the second week should have decent collections but the collections have come by default as exhibitors have kept it on a another week as despite low occupancy as it was still a better bet than the other releases. Once competition comes the film will be out. The business of Naam Shabana till date is as follows.

    Week One – 26,00,00,000

    Week Two – 1,25,00,000 apprx (Day 8)

    TOTAL – 27,25,00,000

Badrinath Ki Dulhania continued to collect in its fifth week with around 15 lakhs nett on its fifth Friday and the film is looking at final business of around 114 crore nett

Phillauri is poor as it collected in a similar range to Badrinath Ki Dulhania but it was the third Friday and this film is looking to finish with around 26 crore nett.

  23. Why else do you think he isn’t getting any of these? The ‘intolerance’ comment is only a recent one. You have to go back to TZP when he received an award as an actor (that too as a supporting actor in Screen Awards, I think). And you have to go back to Lagaan to see him reap several awards as Best Actor. Which means, according to these award organisers he is practically in the same league as Salman Khan as an actor and in terms of performances delivered over the last 15 years!

Priyadarshan is simply stating the obvious here and is simply admitting what these organisers do not dare to admit. That it, Aamir is not being awarded simply because he does not believe in them.

And we know that he is right not to believe in them. If I were to see Aamir Khan going to pick up an award for Filmfare best actor in Dangal for instance and then dancing on stage and hosting the show, making crude jokes, doing homo-sexual acts, he would have less credibility in my eyes. What would be the difference between him and Saif?

Do fans of Aamir actually expect personal or film awards for him? He openly spouts venom at them. It would be embarrassing for them to every other year award his films when he doesn’t show up.

Salman not won a single award from my recollection, it’s not really something to champion. I feel sorry for Akshay because he ‘believes’ in them and wanted one so bad, so he got it. Better to give it to him than Aamir.

Aamir is a bit selfish. I can understand him not giving a crap, but his film’s are supported by many people to get them made – he should submit his entry for them because maybe the director cares. Aamir need not turn up.

The outrage is funny. Seriously who gives value to awards when the blurb after these it’s so obvious a friend has done a favour for another. Even actors of past have confirmed to lobby to get awards like Rishi Kapoor. They mean NOTHING.

It’s almost like if Aamir wins it authenticates the award, if doesn’t there is an agenda. There is a middle ground. I would bet a fair whack that without the Oscar nomination for Lagaan, the Indian award functions wouldn’t have given much to the film. The Oscar nomination forced their hand. They’d look dumb if the most well known award in the world gave an Indian film best film but they didn’t. Lagaan got indirect support to save total embarrassing situation.

Scorcese waited years to win best director, but the film he won it for is not a notch on most his other nominations. Same with Di Caprio.

Anyway, I thought Aamir’s performance was too stellar to ignore by anyone. Airlift I liked. Rustom as Q says was too stagy, and an embarrassingly mediocre film for a National Award. Akshay is a pleasant actor to watch these days, question is, did he deserve to win over Aamir “this year”? Most people don’t think he did, that’s all.

Actors like Ajay and Akshay should stop self-congratulating themselves when they win under BJP rule. It is to be expected from a philistine right political outfit with little patience, taste and sensibility for the arts.

Priyadarshan has finally come up with real reason for not giving Aamir the award. They were worried he wouldn’t turn up to take it!

The last time he got nominated at any major event was for Singham and that’s 6 years back. Most of his nominations and wins came from the two previous decades.

We know you do not really like him. But he is barely relevant in this debate.

Akshay was considered best not just between Aamir and AB (those are two names I am seeing most) but among the entire Indian film industry.. An year when we say Vinayakan in Kammatipadam, Mohanlal in Oopam, Guru Somasundaram in Joker, SJ Suryah in Iraivi, Samuthrakani in Visaranai..Honestly I can go on and on here…

Kammaatipaadam was grossly overrated, to be honest — watchable but quite indulgent, and with not enough of a “point”.

I have seen Rustom and it is travesty that Akshay is winning best actor for it when in mainstream cinema, I can see Salman, Aamir and Amitabh doing better acting in much better movies. I will go further to say even SRK in Raees was better than Akshay’s Rustom. I am not talking about Manoj Bajapi kind of off beat roles which don’t get enough publicity.

        • Visaaranai was indeed the film we should have submitted.

I remember an insightful point Aamir had made when promoting Lagaan at the Oscars, that his biggest challenge was in getting people at the Academy to see the film. That’s because there are so many films that it certainly isn’t the case that everyone sees every eligible film and then votes; they might see only 8 of the 25 and cast their votes, so your best chance is to maximize eyeballs. Now the problem is that because India has sent in so many non-serious entries over the years (Devdas?!) that it is tough to get enough people to watch an Indian film. In the case of Lagaan Aamir and the rest of the team were confident about the film; Visaaranai too is fof such a quality (and frankly, it is (implicitly) a liberal and humane film, and that is right up the Academy’s alley) that I feel reasonably confident it could have made the final list of 4-5 films. A missed opportunity there — we never learn (I am not saying Oscars are a huge deal or we HAVE to win one, but if you are playing the game you have to play it properly); I mean sending a Bajirao or a Jodha-Akbar or a Devdas or whatever will never work.

Rustom, for instance, started off well and had a great concept but the execution was very stage-y later on and I didn’t enjoy it at all (the period element was also very sloppy: the sister of the murdered guy was about as 1950s as the Internet). The other thing is he’s looking fantastic, getting better and better with age (he and Nimrat Kaur made a great couple in Airlift)…

  31. MHA set to launch Akshay Kumar’s website for financial aid to soldiers tomorrow on April 9

In January this year, Hindustan Times had reported that on a suggestion from Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, the Ministry of Home Affairs is working on a web platform that will allow citizens to directly transfer financial aid to the family of a paramilitary soldier killed on duty.

The Ministry, with the technical expertise of National Informatics Centre, is ready with the website http://www.indianbravehearts.gov.in, and the same will be formally launched on April 9 at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The website, which will eventually be available as a mobile app too, has the list of martyred paramilitary personnel who laid their lives in the call of duty from January onwards, especially in insurgency operations in J&K, and Naxal attacks in Chhatisgarh. The details of the incident in which the soldiers lost their life, as well as that on the dependants they have left behind is also given in the website.

Using the payment gateway of the State Bank of India, anyone with a valid bank account or e-wallet, can directly transfer money in the account of the beneficiary. The maximum consolidated aid that can be availed by a slain soldier’s family through the website is Rs Fifteen Lakh. The ministry is working on ensuring that the contribution would be exempted from income tax, while SBI has agreed to absorb the transaction cost, as a part of their CSR initiative.

When contacted, actor Akshay Kumar confirmed the news of the launch and said, “I’m extremely humbled by the fact that the Home Ministry developed this website in a record time, and thankful to the Union Home Secretary Sh Rajeev Mehrishi and his team who made this possible. I’m delighted about the launch and looking forward to coming to Delhi for it on April 9.”

Aamir never seriously said he will not acknowledge National awards if he gets. This is your country choosing to give it via her government, so it becomes the biggest.

Earlier Akshay fans took the twitter by storm when Akshay was not nominated by Filmfare. This National awards kind of subdues their anger. Not that it matters to Akshay but it was more of How can you ignore him? Dont give him award but dont ignore him.

Same with Aamir. I understand that Aamir is unfairly not considered for awards. Not that it matters to him but he cannot be ignored and its quite clear.

I remember watching Akshay Kumar in Aankhen , years back. That initial scene of him in a bus — happy, sighted, looking so handsome — and then the sudden bus crash. I loved him in that film ; also another one with Preity Zinta, co starring one horrifying villain, an actor not seen much now, the guy who speaks shudh Hindi. Need to check IMDB.

Of late the social media space has become toxic, thanks to the ruling party and its social media supporters who have managed to polarise the Indian audience in a really bad way. Bollywood itself has become a divided place, same reason. We still listen to Mohammad Rafi, enjoy his sublime voice, do not bother about his religion. But the Bollywood of today seems sadly divided along religious lines — without really meaning to. And in the cross fire, popular actors like Aamir and Akshay get caught; they are not against each other, but some fans and a few filmwaley like Priyadarshan seem to have taken up battle lines.

IMO, very few have problem with Akshay getting the national award; he has done plenty of good work through the years, has steadily improved. So he got his due this year. That is ok.

What is unforgivable, for me at least, is Priyadarshan dismissing Dangal and Aamir’s heartfelt performance. Aamir’s commitment to his film and role is such that he nearly risked his life in doing Dangal. Before he started his 5 month weight loss from the unhealthy 97 kg, Aamir had instructed that Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh should play his younger self, in case anything happened to him.

Aamir was pitch perfect in Dangal — neither underplaying nor overplaying his role. He did a far better job with his Haryanvi than he did with Punjabi in RDB. I am familiar with Haryanvi Hindi, thanks to my visits to Faridabad. Aamir’s Haryanvi was good, served the film’s purpose. But the younger girls spoke their dialogues extremely well. Zaria surely deserves her award.

Aamir himself has said that he is not a spontaneous actor, that the film’s ladies did their roles more easily, that he had to work harder, that they were ten times better than him. He is one humble soul, really.

And Aamir fans do remember that Akshay once dedicated one of his awards to Aamir. We have no problem with Akshay getting the big one now.

But yes, I seriously feel that Dangal should have won award for popular film providing wholesome entertainment.

It is Priyadarshan who irritates with his lame and unfair excuses. He spoke about Bollywood mostly making films that support gay characters. What the ..,,😡 And so, Manoj Bajpai and Aligarh were ignored. Priyadarshan also spoke about Dangal not dealing with any social issues. Another WTF statement.

The man has been a disgrace as a jury head.

Akshay Kumar Reacts To Haters Who Said He Didn’t Deserve National Award In The Most Humble Way

Reacting to the haters accusing him of not deserving the national award, Akshay told HT, “Itna keh sakta hun mai ki ye award bhi maine imandari se jita hai. Maine aaj tak cheating nahi ki. Neither have I ever made a call to anyone to win an award nor have given money or done favours for it.”

  33. Priyadarshan elaborates, “Sultan was rejected by the Bombay Jury. So was Dangal. In fact, N Chandra, who was on the jury, recalled ‘Dangal’. I supported him, and that’s how Zaira Wasim (Best Supporting Actress) won the award. We didn’t consider Aamir for any award because he doesn’t believe in them and he didn’t even collect his National Award for ‘Taare Zameen Par’. So, why would we give him an award now? As for Akshay, I’m not doing any film with him now or in the near future. He was supposed to do a film with me and Rohit Shetty, but that didn’t materialise. We worked together years ago. So there’s no agenda to give him an award. Also, the point is, can I do that? Not as the National Award Jury chairman for sure. I don’t know who other than those faceless people on social media has a problem with Akshay’s win.” He points out that the final winners are chosen by the central jury after they are shortlisted from over 300 entries across regions by the regional juries. A chairperson, he says, only steps in when there is a dispute over winners among the central jury members, which he insists didn’t happen in this case.

    • I think Diwali is a much better date than the previous one (Aug 4) for Secret Superstar. With both TEPK and Imtiaz film clashing a week after, SS wudnt have got enough screens in its second week. This is a content film and will need WOM to trend well in order to get to any substantial total. Just one week run wudnt be enough to get its due.

Also, releasing on the same day as 2.0 wont hurt, because SS isnt a film that needs record number of screens. Even with 2.0 it will get enough screen space for a small budget film, looking to be a sleeper hit.

And lastly the way everything is set up – its a deja vu feeling of TZP vs Welcome in 2007. Much like TZP, it is releasing along with an Akshay biggie, with Aamir in a supporting role, and the genre being a children’s film to be enjoyed with the entire family during the festival season.

    Koimoi.com Team –

2017 seems to be year of big Bollywood clashes. After the box office battle between SRK’s Raees and Hrithik’s Kaabil during Republic day, few days back Akshay confirmed his box clash (Toilet – Ek Prem Katha) With Shah Rukh Khan’s next on 11th August.

And now, its Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar versus Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 (Robot 2) during Diwali.

The film was about to clash with Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film Bhoomi on August 4th.

It has been witnessed in the recent times that there are decent amount of room for two or more released during the festive season of Diwali. According to a reliable source close to the development, “Aamir himself called Rajini Sir and discussed his concerns vis-à-vis SECRET SUPERSTAR shifting from August to Diwali. Both the actors share a warm bond and it was with Rajini Sir’s blessings that Aamir has announced a Diwali release for SECRET SUPERSTAR.”

Previously the 4th installment of Golmaal series was scheduled to release during Diwali, but to avoid the clash with 2.0, Golmaal Again is now pre-poned to 6th October.

2.0, which is the sequel of 2010’s blockbuster Enthiran (Robot) is expected to be the most expensive Indian film with the budget of 400 crores. The film is directed by Shankar and it stars Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson and Sudhanshu Pandey.

  36. 64th National Film Awards 2017: Akshay Kumar’s win is beyond Rustom, he’s a pan-Indian hero

A couple of months ago, thousands of Akshay Kumar’s fans had expressed disappointment in the nominations announced by Filmfare for the Best Actor in a Leading Role award as the actor was not nominated for either of his three films that crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.

Now that he has been conferred upon the National Award for Best Actor for Tinu Suresh Desai’s period drama Rustom, his fans have a reason to rejoice.

This is his first major award as he is known more for his box office track record than sweeping the top honours.

While Rustom may not be the best film of his career, the honour comes as a well-deserved tribute to an actor who is making attempts to represent every nook and corner of the country through his cinema. Kumar, born a Punjabi, has never let his off screen identity get the better of any of his roles on the silver screen.

From representing the Sikh community as Happy in Anees Bazmee’s 2008 comedy Singh is Kinng to wooing NRIs with his act of a deep-rooted simpleton, Arjun Singh in Vipul Shah’s 2007 romantic comedy Namastey London, Kumar has made a conscious effort to bring to life the aspirations and issues that plague every community.

Last year, he addressed the NRI sentiment to return to their homeland in Raja Krishna Menon’s Airlift. He chose not to play a conventional hero but a repentant man who wants to atone his sins by taking up the de-facto leadership of a mass evacuation operation in Kuwait.

In another period drama Rustom, he brought to the forefront a contentious episode of the Parsi community that had gotten buried somewhere in history. He rekindled the debate around the famous case of naval officer KM Nanawati.

His action avatar had helped in gaining a wide reach across the single screen audience and mindless comedies like the Houseful franchise helped further his appeal. Houseful 3 raked in Rs 100 crore in no time, owing to his popularity among the masses.

Neeraj Pandey’s thriller Crack has been pushed to the bottom of his priority list as he is currently focusing more on extending his popularity to other states rather than consolidating his present fan base.

He played a Lucknow-based lawyer in Subhash Kapoor’s courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2 this year, which as is the trend, made it to the Rs 100 crore club. He perfected the mannerisms and accent of Uttar Pradesh, incorporating every quirk or lehja, as they call it locally. He even paired himself with Huma Qureshi for the film, a popular face in Uttar Pradesh courtesy her debut in Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur.

He will continue to enhance his popularity in Uttar Pradesh with Shree Narayan Singh’s upcoming social satire Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The film, shot extensively in Barsana and Nandgaon in Uttar Pradesh and also in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, revolves around the Swachh Bharat Campaign, a flagship programme of the Central government.

He will be seen opposite Bhumi Pednekar, another popular face in Uttar Pradesh because of her debut in Sharat Kartaria’s Dum Lagaa Ke Haishaa, a romantic comedy set in Haridwar. The release date of the film has also been positioned wisely as it will release days before this Independence Day.

He is currently shooting for R Balki’s social drama Padman. He has resumed shooting for where he wrapped up Toilet: Ek Prem Katha – Madhya Pradesh. It is the biopic of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur who invented low-cost sanitary pads. Since his major work base was in Indore, Kumar is attempting to take the local story to a national level with Padman.

This Diwali, Kumar looks to trickle down his fan base to the southern states with S Shankar’s science fiction film 2.0 in which he will be seen locking horns with Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. Thalaiva’s presence is sure to attract huge numbers to the cinema halls not only in Tamil Nadu but also in other states of south India.

This year, Kumar’s filmography is a mix of regional stories with a pan-Indian or even global appeal. He seems to be going on the Priyanka Chopra way, though through a more mainstream approach.

While Chopra has been bankrolling regional cinema, such as Marathi, Punjabi and Bhojpuri films, Kumar has leveraged his goodwill as an actor against author-backed roles from the hinterlands and conveyed their stories to a wider audience.

PS: He has also produced a couple of Marathi films.

Next year, he will once again go the local-gone-global way with his portrayal of Kishan Lal, the Indian hockey team captain, who led the country to three consecutive Olympic victories in Reema Kagti’s sports drama Gold. Since Lal was born in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Kumar will return to the state to depict the initial years of Lal’s life.

However, Kumar has not completely let go of his urban fan following. Besides Pandey’s Crack, he also has another biopic, Moghul, lined up for release. Moghul is the story of Gulshan Kumar, the founder of T-Series and a pioneer of film music in India.

He has also signed a film under Karan Johar and Salman Khan’s production houses that reportedly revolves around the Battle of Sargarhi, which implies that he returns to a familiar turf of playing a Sikh, though in a completely different light.

Besides his reel life adventures, Kumar has left no stones unturned in expressing his patriotic fervour. He has donated huge sums to martyred armed forces and CRPF jawans who lost their lives in attacks on the border and in Naxalite-affected areas in Chhattisgarh.

He has also posted videos on social media expressing his concerns over lack of women safety. Whether it was speaking on the mass molestation episode in Bangalore on New Year’s Eve or opening a free martial arts centre for women’s self-defense in collaboration with Yuva Sena in Mumbai, he comes across as an empathetic and vocal celebrity on issues, both national and local.

His National Award bears testimony to the fact that he is not just a good actor but also a concerned storyteller willing to represent every state of the country in the most entertaining yet hard-hitting manner possible.

  37. Why Indian ‘intellectuals’ seem to hate Indic native culture and Hinduism

    http://www.opindia.com/2017/04/why-indian-intellectuals-seem-to-hate-indic-native-culture-and-hinduism/

So, the colonized minds of the Indian Intelligentsia went on accepting everything that thinkers like Marx and Weber said without objecting to any of their claims. The intelligentsia kept on feeding the narrative to the common people via the education system. And slowly this psyche became so deep-seated in the society that we stopped asking questions, rather the Indian left blinded by its ego and guided by its biases, started defending Marx and Weber.

Probably, now the time has come when we should stop defining ourselves by Marx, Weber, Mill and Galbraith. The old school of politics has already seen a sea of change in 2014 elections and now the situation is ripe for the old school of journalism, old school of film making and the old school of thought that created this narrative to take a backseat.

The stage is all set for the decolonization of Indian minds to begin.

This is precisely why the 1950s witnessed a spate of anti-cow slaughter legislation by a Congress whose roots in the ethos of the national movement were then firmly intact. Nehruvian patriotism certainly influenced India’s creamy layer; it failed to unsettle a more authentic nationalism at the grassroots.

Till the Gandhi-led national movement injected a conscious self-pride in Indians, the upper echelons of ‘native’ society were divided into two groups: those who shared a table with Europeans and those who used food as an act of symbolic defiance.

The 19th century Bengal writer Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was scathing about fellow Indians who extended their enlightenment to culinary preferences. “And what shall I say,” he wrote, “of that weakest of human beings, the half-educated anglicised and brutalised Bengali babu, who congratulates himself on his capacity to dine off a plate of beef as if this act of gluttony constituted in itself unimpeachable evidence of a perfectly cultivated intellect?”

      Critics feel you’re encouraging Hindutva.

What is wrong in celebrating our ancient past? I don’t see why we should feel defensive about it. It is unfortunate that our elites and liberals don’t realise our ancient culture is actually their biggest ally. Regrettably, many have not read our ancient texts; they form their opinions based on Amar Chitra Katha comics and TV serials. Our ancient texts engender liberalism and modernity. The Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads respect women. These oppose the birth-based caste system. In the Gita, Lord Krishna says, the varna system is created on guna and karma — attributes and deeds. The birth-based caste system is against our ancient culture. We should celebrate this. Our ancient culture is a natural ally to liberalism

      Is “our” culture only Hindu?

Hinduism is a big part — but no one is left out. I celebrate Ghalib’s poetry too. Can the liberal elite even pronounce Ghalib correctly? Such elites know of Ghalib only because of a TV serial. Do they know of any other Urdu poet? They have very little knowledge of traditional Indian culture, but they have lots of biases.

Is there a liberal reluctance about engaging with Indian tradition?

Yes. Perhaps, it’s the result of the colonial experience. We haven’t really changed our education system after that. What do most educated Indians learn about our culture, philosophies, literature, science and math? They know nothing of it. They still believe what the British told us — that our texts are dens of superstition. I’ve got nothing against Shakespeare, but some of his texts are regressive about women. Kalidasa’s Sanskrit plays are not. The Rig Veda has hymns written by rishikas — powerful female sages. That was the status of women in ancient India

        • “…because he is doing patriotic stuff…”

I should add that Akshay’s “patriotic” films are not jingoistic or offensive in the way that some of Sunny Deol’s were; Akshay’s films like Holiday, Baby, etc. are refined, there are no cringe-worthy communal moments, they actually adhere to pretty traditional 1970s and 1980s registers in terms of positive minority characters etc. And I don’t just think this is appeasement: from everything we know about the man and what he has been about (recall that in the 1990s he refused to abuse Pakistan in dialogues because he didn’t think that was appropriate, an interesting position to say the least), he is someone who believes firmly in equal citizenship and secularism (I might add that his wife Twinkle has been a voice for sanity through her columns, when she could easily have adopted the more expedient route as other celebrities do). The films might be a bit more vigilante-ish in mindset (I had that problem with, taking a non-Akki film as an example, A Wednesday), a bit more “shoot first and let due process be hanged”/Dirty Harry-ish kind of vibe, and hence not completely to my taste, but they are far better than many other films over the years. He has been a good spokesperson for this kind of film, and has brought some dignity to it. And then films like Airlift etc. are IMO not problematic at all, there is nothing even Dirty Harry-like about them.

The next step: I would love to see Akshay do some “procedurals”, something like a Mardaani.

  40. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who missed attending a book launch here earlier this week owing to high fever, has also been down due to a stomach infection, stiff neck, and shoulder pain. He says health issues are a trial, but they have to be endured.

Amitabh was due to launch a book by film archivist P.K. Nair.

Talking about various health issues he is currently fighting, Big B wrote on his blog: “I suffered a stomach infection after consuming a pizza with the hottest red chilli powder, the cause of the infection. The fever persists on the infection and its control is being worked on.”

He also said he is nursing a “stiff neck and shoulder pain” which are a result of past injuries from stunts he did in the 1970s and 1980s.

“The protection gadgetry that is available now for all artists was absent then in those years. The jumps and dives and action work was loaded with real action, causing all the injuries,” he said, and added that his age has given in to his health issues.

“The neck braces medication and all other kinds of treatments follow. They work momentarily. A final solution is being worked out, hence the absence from functions and events,” he explained.

The issues are causing a lot of discomfort to the “Pink” actor.

“The nights are the worst. Getting horizontal is impossible, so most nights are spent sitting and hoping to get some sleep. Thus it is a trial, but one that has to be endured. All else is well,” he added.

He appreciates the love and concern from his well-wishers, but said: “The last thing that would greatly upset me would be the multiple queries, treatments and other advices on how I should conduct myself.”

  45. Dangal’s Zaira Wasim thanks Aamir on her best supporting actress National Award win

    bollywood Updated: Apr 08, 2017 10:23 IST
    Press Trust of India

Zaira Wasim today won the National Award for her role in Dangal and the young actor from Kashmir has thanked superstar Aamir Khan for supporting her throughout the film’s journey.

The actress, who won the best supporting actress award for her portrayal of young Geeta Phogat in the Nitish Tiwari-directed biopic, said it is encouraging for her to receive the honour for her debut role.

“I am extremely happy. I would like to thank the jury for conferring on me this honour. My heartfelt gratitude to my family for believing in me and to Aamir Sir and Nitish Sir for supporting me.

“It is very encouraging to receive an award of this stature in my debut film, the appreciation has only got me more excited to work harder,” Zaira said in a statement.

Dangal, based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, was one of the biggest hits of 2016. All the actors won critical appreciation for their performance in the film, that released in December last year.

Every award tells us more about the jury than the winners.
And by the way what is Akshay Kumar doing to get more brownie points added to his career ? A good boy has to do a good deed every day.
Now Rocky will showup with burnol bottles and green chillies, red chillies and pepper spray too!

      • The award and its genuineness should be kept as the foremost criteria, but here, it seems the jury is occupied with the government’s ego not getting bruised. “We were scared Aamir Khan would not come to take his award. We could not take that risk… ”

What is this childishness? They are running scared of actors now. And now nice knowing Akshay gets the award because the one who deserved it doesn’t want it apparently. Jo kaabil hai, woh award lene ko tyaar nahin, aur jisse award chahiye, woh kaabil nahin.

The fact that the government has scant regard for merit was very clear when an non-entity like Gajendra Chauhan was made the chairman of FTII. So no matter how many times Priyadarshan justifies to himself that he picked the worthy winners, no one is going to buy it.

  47. I dare say, Aamir Khan would have been mighty pleased to get the National Award, even if he has an awkward relationship with the present government. He is courageous of course, but he has every bit of the actor’s vanity and would have accepted a national award.

If one realized, there was an immediate, even if temporory thaw in his relations with Filmfare after he got Best actor award. He appeared on the cover of the very next issue! So lets not pretend Aamir is without feelings and he doesn’t get by not winning awards and acclaim, especially when he deserves it.

The very reason he stopped going to commercial awards is because he cared about them being unfair and corrupt. If one cannot even expect a little credibility from National Awards, as has been the case from some time, then actors would be well-advised to stop thinking about these awards altogether.

Terrible Weekend At The Box Office For Bollywood: Naam Shabana, Baahubali Re-Run & New Releases
Here’s Naam Shabana, Baahubali Re-Run, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laddoo Deewana, Mirza Juuliet, Mukti Bhawan’s Weekend Collections
    By
    Joginder Tuteja –
    April 10, 2017

It was a terrible weekend for Bollywood as hardly any numbers came at the Box Office. There were around 3000 screens running Hindi films, which means the capacity to earn close to 30 crore was there on a day to day basis.

For the weekend, it comes to 90 crore. However, not even 10% of this amount came over the entire weekend, which tells the tale.
    Naam Shabana Box Office Collections

The only film to fetch some sort of moolah was Naam Shabana and that brought in 5.37 crore more in its second weekend.
The film has managed to cross the 30 crore mark in the process and currently stands at 32.55 crore. Ideally, these numbers should have come in the Week One itself as that would set the stage for a 40 crore lifetime. Though that won’t happen, at least fair hold in the second weekend has allowed the film to stay in contention for a 35 crore lifetime at the least.
Baahubali: The Beginning Box Office Collections

Re-release of Baahubali: The Beginning hasn’t resulted in any sort of returns as audiences haven’t really showed much interest in giving it a dekko on the big screen within two years of its arrival.

The film could gather just about 2 crore* in its opening weekend and it would be interesting to see that after such huge release, will it actually move into the second week with any major screen count.
Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laddoo Deewana, Mirza Juuliet, Mukti Bhawan Box Office Collections

Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana had some sort of a potential to surprise but that hasn’t turned out to be the case. The film just couldn’t find any opening whatsoever and the critical appreciation wasn’t there either. With nothing really going for it, the film’s opening weekend has been around the 75 lakhs* mark, which ideally should have been its first day numbers to enjoy some sort of growth.

Ditto for Mirza Juuliet which has gone through the same fate.

As for Mukti Bhawan, all the stars that it has gathered via critical acclaim haven’t really led to any footfalls. The film would end it run in theaters after one week.

    Naam Shabana (9)

It isn’t only Dangal that’s been given the ban order in Pakistan.

Neeraj Pandey’s espionage thriller Naam Shabana has also been stopped in theatres across Pakistan. In this case, it seems the Pakistani officials woke up to the theme of international terrorism after the film was released.

A source close to the development says, “The Pakistani authorities seemed fine with the film. But a day after the film released they woke up to the fact that the theme of terrorism could reflect badly on Pakistan.”

This seems like a grievous case of killing the messenger just because you don’t like the message.

Vikas Bahl’s alleged molestation case has got everyone in the media and outside of it talking about the criticality of sexual harassment at work. Off late there have been innumerable number of similar cases, including Arunabh Kumar from TVF.

Kangana Ranaut is known to be unabashed and brutally honest about critical issues, especially when it comes to women empowerment and gender equality. From nepotism in Bollywood to her sister who was an acid attack victim, Kangana has always spoken up against everything she feels is wrong with the world.

Recently at an event, she took to stage and spoke about Vikas Bahl’s ongoing molestation case. She said, ” We are here to talk about a brand, but what you mentioned is a serious topic. But whoever faces such situations and speaks up is courageous. Generally speaking, they should be encouraged to talk about it by their family, colleagues. They should not be ashamed. Obviously, there will always be another side to the other story. But, people should speak up, whether it is right or wrong “.

On the work front, Kangana is busy with two of her upcoming projects, ‘Simran’ and ‘Manikarna: The Queen of Jhansi’. Directed by Hansal Mehta, ‘Simran’ is a story of a girl, her ambitions and how she gets addicted to the world of crime. Talking about ‘Simran’ she said, In Simran, ” I have worked as an actor and as a collaborator. I have worked on the script too. As for Manikarnika, I have not collaborated because I did not see any scope. Krish and the team have worked on the script “.

Both the movies have Kangana playing very strong characters and after unexpected results of ‘Rangoon’, Kangana has high hopes from her upcoming ventures.

  56. Dangal Box Office Collection in Taiwan: Historic
    04/11/2017

Aamir Khan starrer Dangal has done historic business in Taiwan. After 17 days, Dangal box office collection stands at approximately $1.63 million (10.50 crore) as reported by the local press. Though official numbers have not been released yet.

The film has shown big growth in the third weekend and is at the number one spot at Taipei box office beating all regional and Hollywood films. The number of shows was also increased. It was released in 61 locations nationwide last weekend, expanding from 50 locations the previous week.

Dangal has now become the highest grossing Bollywood film in Taiwan beating another Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots. Dangal overseas collection now stands at $32.33 million. It has become the 2nd highest overseas grosser of all time beating Dhoom 3.

It is unprecedented, to say the least, that a film like Dangal has done such kind of business in non-traditional markets. Also, it was not a commercial film like 3 Idiots or PK but Aamir Khan’s fan following has helped to get an initial and later it has grown due to the extremely positive word of mouth. There are reports that Dangal will release in China in June and is expected to do huge business there also.

Aamir Khan also thanked his fans in Taiwan in a video message.

  61. s ‘Sadak 2’ a remake of the 1994 Tamil drama ‘Mahanadi’?
    Stuti Srivastava | Apr 11, 2017, 05.11 PM IST
Speculations were rife that Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt are soon to join hands for a project. The rumours started after Sanjay was spotted at Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt’s office located in Khar. The said project is rumoured to be a sequel to the 1991 Pooja and Sanjay starrer ‘Sadak’. Titled ‘Sadak 2’ the film will be helmed by ‘Begum Jaan’ director Srijit Mukherji.

The film was touted to be a carry-forward to the first instalment, however, a leading daily suggests that the film is going to be a remake of 1994 Tamil drama ‘Mahanadi’. A source close to the leading daily revealed, “It’s a remake of the 1994 Tamil drama ‘Mahanadi’ starring Kamal Haasan and dealt with hardcore social issues like as corruption and child trafficking. Alia Bhatt will be seen as the daughter of Sanjay and Pooja and she will go missing and later will be found by Dutt as a sex worker.”

There is no confirmation on the same as yet from any of the people involved. A picture of Mahesh Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt made its way to the internet, and it is since then that there have been speculations about the film.

  63. SCOOP Release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati pushed to 2018
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Apr 12, 2017 – 8:00 am IST

SCOOP Release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati pushed to 2018

By now we all know that maverick director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next venture Padmavati which stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor is slated to release in November this year. However, the period drama which is based on the life of Rani Padmavati has been facing multiple obstacles. The film’s sets were vandalized twice and the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was also assaulted by workers from a political group.

If that wasn’t enough, after the skirmish between the workers from the political party and a subsequent clarification from the film’s production team, the Rajasthan royal family took objection to the film stating that they would pay detailed attention to the progress of the film and that meticulously verify the story of Bhansali’s film before granting further permission for the shoot.

In light of these events, we now hear that the release date of the film which was slated to hit screens this November has been shifted to next year. Though an official confirmation on the same is still pending, sources close to the production of the film maintain that Padmavati despite the severe setbacks is still well on schedule and will hit screens as planned.

Another crucial factor is that Padmavati is mounted on a massive budget of Rs. 140 cr and has quite literally become a bit of a burden for its makers. Now the project has come too far with quite a bit of resources already being invested into it for it to be scrapped. Reports suggest that the makers of the film hence will opt to take a while longer to complete the project and see it through, rather than rush through it and compromise on the film.

  64. Fast & Furious 8 Set To Release Today
    Wednesday 12 April 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fast & Furious 8 will release today post 3pm across the country and its a weird release as there is no holiday tomorrow except for Vaisakhi in Punjab and Haryana while Friday is a holiday across the country for Ambedkar Jayanti and Good Friday. Its a weird decision as although the UK release is on Wednesday, the US release is on Friday so its not as if a Wednesday release was a must in India. The Thursday evening option would have been best to take in the evening crowd as the next day is a holiday.

Fast & Furious is the biggest franchise in India from Hollywood along with Spiderman and the last film in the franchise grossed close to 100 crore nett. The last film also opened to 12 crore nett apprx and sustained very well, it still remains the biggest initial for a Hollywood film in India. Normally you would expect the next film to take a bigger opening but this release makes that impossible while the next day is a working day and then its the third day which is Friday and a holiday but the collections by then depend on the public reports which can go either way.

Also a couple of months back we had the release of XXX – Return of Xander Cage with the same actor Vin Diesel and the same genre and it fared very poorly in India even though the film was promoted extensively due to the presence of Deepika Padukone but it was bit of a disater not just in india but also in its all important domestic market. The response in India to that film could have an affect on the Fast & Furious brand.

Despite the release being post 3 pm it has a huge number of shows with many multiplexes getting over 10 with the various formats and this will push collections even if occupancy is on lower side due to Wednesday release. The Hindi competition will release on Friday with Begum Jaan but its unlikely that film can stand up to Fast & Furious 8 unless reports are very bad. The only plus of Begum Jaan is very low costs.

  65. Dangal, it seems, is not going to be released in Pakistan. The Pakistani censor board wanted the Indian national anthem removed from the climax of the film. The patriot in Aamir Khan has risen in revolt. Satyamev Jayate to that. And would Manoj Kumar and Akshay Kumar please move over?

When contacted director Nitesh Tiwari who is out of the country, said he was on the same page as Aamir Khan on this. “Even the thought of cutting out the national anthem is completely unacceptable. However I am curious to know what is the reason given for such a demand.”

CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani has a cogent and comprehensive take on the Pakistani perception of patriotism. “It’s very simple. Our national anthem which gives every Indian goose bumps, is our national anthem. It’s constitutionally unacceptable across the border for our anthem to be played in their country. There is nothing new or shocking in this.”

Nihalani says the same perception of Pakistani nationalism governs Indian censorship laws. “We do not allow shots of the Pakistani flag. And we’d not let the Pakistani national anthem play in any cinema shown in our country.”

He makes a very interesting observation about international censorship laws. “In Britain the censor board doesn’t allow abusive words or bloodied violence. Here in India we are bullied by the so called liberal filmmakers into allowing profanities and violence. If we don’t we are called conservative government’s stooges. In foreign countries the censor board is truly an independent apex body. In India we are helpless pawns in the hands of the pseudo-liberals.”

I think this particular commentator shows scant regard for an argument in question, and instead uses every opportunity to spew venom at fellow bloggers. Aamir, Priyadarshan and BJP are all public figures/outfits, and their professional actions I can comment upon as I deem correct – and I much value my own sensibility. The right thing to do for someone who disagrees is to post a sharp counter or a witty rejoinder in keeping with the issue, not to go on a rampage against fellow members, who are not public figures, and who deserve their right to comment freely.

Rocky’s remarks are still ‘okay’ because they are of a more broad, humour-coated kind but this sort of pointed attack at members is frankly unacceptable. To keep on the prowl to attack members with names and be proud of it is rudeness of an unspeakable kind.

    • Never wanted to hurt anyone. If it became personal (good that a particular para has been edited by Satyam) then I will be careful next time because frankly I never meant it to get so direct. BJP will lose couple of votes now because of me.

Am all gassed up for the 8th chapter.
Dom – will see you in imax buddy. 😎
      Better be superior than 7.

I don’t want to think about Baahubali2 at all here. I am already in furious mode and in 8th gear. Blockbuster Hollywood bonanza- the best action series. The movie has long overtaken other franchisees for me barring XMen.

  73. Fast & Furious 8 Does Very Well On Paid Previews
    Thursday 13 April 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fast & Furious 8 did good business on its paid previews with collections around 5.50 crore as per early estimates though the final number will depend on where tha Telugu and Tamil versions end at. It was just a half day release but it has still managed to open better than all the Hindi films this year barring Raees, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Kaabil. No other Hindi film has managed to cross the 5 crore nett mark on day one. XXX – Return Of Xander Cage also had paid previews earlier this year and it had grossed 2.23 crore nett but that was an evening release while this is afternoon.

Fast & Furious 8 is the biggest Hollywood brand in India if we go by collections of the previous films but its hard to judge the film on its Wednesday collections as its not a complete release. Today will give a better idea where it stands and how it compares with biggest opening days for Hollywood in India. The last film had grossed 12 crore nett on day one but it was a holiday. That was the highest opening for a Hollywood release in India but that may be a bit too much too expect from Fast & Furious 8 as it has probably consumed some of its first day audience in the paid previews.

  74. Actually I dont find anything wrong if someone wants to look lighter shade. It is their personal choice. Why to moral police them? Some in my circle who are very dark are looking less dark and it is boosting their morale. It is all very easy to say be proud of how you look, Just be in their shoes. Most of them would like to have fair skin.

  75. Bollywood films and other wood films mostly employ fairskinned heroines or apply loads of pancake on them. How many Miss India winners have truly dark skins? Why Ash is celebrated so much? It is a fact of life and better deal with them.

    • It is good. But Priyanka has become quite fair now. In her films. I agree that top stars should not encourage this by advertising these creams. Hope they will stop it just the way some of them stopped those soft drinks. What I find funny is that even infants are not spared.

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion does the unthinkable, arrives solo and gets a clean two week run

Things are heating up well for Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion. For the biggest Indian film ever to release so far, the SS Rajamouli directed affair is living up to the expectations that one has from it, especially when it comes to its arrival. While the war drama would be seeing a record release across the country across various languages (Telugu, Hindi, Tamil), it would also be seeing a clean open run for good two weeks at least in the Hindi version.

“Well, this has never happened before for a dubbed film, but it is happening with Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion,” informs our source from a premium exhibition chain, “In the times when even two Bollywood superstars end up engaging in a Box Office battle where two of their films clash with each other, Bahubali 2 has done the impossible by not just procuring a solo release but even scaring away the competition from the week after. In the times when at least 100 notable Hindi releases scamper for arrival on the 52 Fridays, Bahubali 2 has managed two back to back Fridays just for itself, which is no mean feat.”

  79. Wish Pakistan Censor Board Gave Begum Jaan A Viewing: Mahesh Bhatt
The film, starring Vidya Balan, tells the story of survival and the sex workers community apart from Partition.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, whose latest production Begum Jaan – set against the backdrop of India’s Partition in 1947 – won’t release in Pakistan, wishes the censor board in the neighbouring country would have given it a watch.

“I did not look at Pakistan just as a market to sell my wares. When ‘Begum Jaan‘ was not viewed by their censor board, I was ridiculed by some of my close associates. That did hurt. I wish they had given my film a viewing and then taken this decision of not granting the permission to be screened in Pakistan,” Bhatt told IANS on social media.

“I was told by someone in the censor board to pitch the question to the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting & National Heritage which allows the import of foreign films since the board only previews the product as per censor code. I was told that the objection to import the film came from them,” he added.

The film, starring Vidya Balan, tells the story of survival and the sex workers community apart from Partition.

When IANS asked Mobashir Hasan, Pakistan’s Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) head, if it is true that Pakistan doesn’t import Indian films based on Partition, he said: “Please ask the distributors. They import the films and not the government.”

A key distributor of Indian films in Pakistan – Satish Anand, head honcho of Eveready Group of Companies – told IANS on social media: “Let’s put it this way that this project in present day will not reach the screens. India-Pakistan… for the present policies are fluid.”

Was he distributing it? “Not at all. It was very clear this content will not be acceptable to this market. People have liked the trailer, I do hope the film does very well worldwide.”

Begum Jaan, which marks Bengali director Srijit Mukherji’s directorial debut in Hindi films, is set to hit the Indian screens on Friday.

    • This movie is a potential disaster.
I for one am not in a mood at all to see the stupid theme -India Pakistan bonhomie on screen.
For most of the Indians the dream to see a good and prosperous neighbour who likes you as much as you do, is over. Now I just don’t want to hear about Pakistan. Each and every news about them is anti India.

  80. Fast & Furious Thursday Business
    Friday 14 April 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fast & Furious 8 had a good first full day as it grossed 9 crore nett which takes its two day figures to 14.50 crore nett. The film was helped by evening shows being strong due to a holiday the next day and collections in Delhi city and Punjab being helped by the holiday for Vaisakhi. The film is doing well but it will be the next few days that will tell whether it can match up to the last film. It is a holiday today so collections should go up and then there is the weekend to come. What is sure is that the film will become the highest grossing Hollywood film in 2017 in India by the end of its extended first weekend. The collections of Fast & Furious 8 till date are as follows.

    Wednesday (Paid Previews) – 5,50,00,000

    Thursday – 9,00,00,000

    TOTAL – 14,50,00,000

The film is generally doing well across the country but the dubbed versions over the first two days have not performed as well as Fast & Furious 7 which could keep it short of that film. Fast & Furious 7 was huge in Hindi grossing close to 40 crore nett and going by first two day occupancy for this one its its going to be tough to match. Though it could that awareness is less in smaller cities of a Wednesday release and it improves on the traditional first day Friday.

Mahabharat is such an epic that I need to up my craftsmanship to handle such a subject. Yeah I met Aamir ji once quite sometime back, We spoke about Mahabharata. I know that he’s very much interested in doing the film. But as I said, at present I am not thinking anything beyond Baahubali. Mahabharata is definitely not after this.”
