  1. Begun Jaan Very Dull – Punjabi Film Manje Bistre Bumper
    Friday 14 April 2017 14.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Begum Jaan took a very dull opening considering it was a holiday. The occupancy was around 15-20% but its coming on a holiday for Good Friday and Ambedkar Jayanti and the collections are going to be poor even with the holiday factor, forget real value. The film is a remake of a Bengali film with the scenario changed from India – Bangladesh border to India – Pakistan border to make it more relevant to all India but if only film making was so easy. Changing the setting won’t help much if the story does not relate to the wider audience. The problem for the film is that growth is going to be tough on day two due to the holiday on day one so really it has to put up a good or at least decent first day total which looks difficult.

The Punjabi film Manje Bistre took a bumper opening of 80-85% in Punjab and was very good in Delhi city. The film has benefited from the holiday though could have benefited even more if released on Thursday which was Vaisakhi but it was not censored in time. The film is easily beating Fast & Furious 8 in all centres of Punjab and Haryana barring Gurgaon and Faridabad and even in Delhi city it is beasting it at select multiplexes.

Between Fast & Furious 8 and Manje Bistre, Begum Jaan has practically been left as a no show in North India despite it being a holiday.

After Guru and Raavan, star couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are coming together for filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s next project.

According to a source close to the development, “After doing Guru and Raavan with the couple in the lead roles, Mani has been planning a third film with them for some years now. He is very close to both of them. In fact, Ash started her career with Mani’s Iruvar and Abhishek’s career highlights are Mani’s Yuva and Guru. The upcoming film will happen after Kaatru Vaaliydai in Tamil (Cheliya in Telugu). Mani will return to Hindi cinema with his third Ash-Abhi vehicle.”

Abhishek has said in an earlier interview, “For us (him and Ash) to come together again, the script has to be really special. We can’t just be in a film together for the sake of being together.”

Mahabharat is such an epic that I need to up my craftsmanship to handle such a subject. Yeah I met Aamir ji once quite sometime back, We spoke about Mahabharata. • I remember around 15 years back, Rajkumar Santoshi announced Mahabharat. It was going to be a 2 parts project. They were each going to be 2 hrs 30 mins long and the 2nd part was to be released after a 6 months gap. It was at the time when Khakee was being made.

He had announced Amitabh Bachan as Bhishma, Anil Kappor as Yudhishtira, Ajay Devgan as Krishna or Arjun, Sunil Shetty as Bheema, Sanjay Dutt as Duryodhana and Sunny Deol as Karna. Aishwarya Rai was to star as Draupadi.

It never materialised. It was the closest Bollywood got to making the epic in recent times. Let’s hope Rajamouli is able to make it.

      • Why it is always Bhishma for Bachchan? Why not Dritarashtra for a change? Or even Krishna?

        • It does seem like a natural fit and tailor-made role fro him. It is also one of the most important characters of the epic and Amitabh Bachan definitely does not deserve anything less.

I just looked for and saw a previous interview from Santoshi and some reports online from that time and here was the reported cast:

          Bhishma- Amitabh Bachan
          Yudhistira- Anil Kapoor
          Krishna- Ajay Devgan
          Arjun- Arjun Rampal (LOL!)
          Bheem- Sunil Shetty
          Draupadi- Aishwarya Rai
          Duryodhana- Sanjay Dutt
          Karna- Sunny Deol

There were rumours of Amrish Puri cast as Drona Acharya, Naseerudin Shah as Dritarashtra and Vivek Oberoi as Dushasana.

If Aamir Khan wants to make the project with Rajamouli, then on paper, at least, this looks like an exciting prospect. Both of them have fantastic vision.

        • In fact, there were several reports back then that Salman was to play Dushasana! Sounds implausible today. Maybe journalists were imagining things because of the Aishwarya Rai-Draupadi connection. But then Salman was not going as strong at that time, so maybe he had accepted to experiment.

In any case, Devgan as Krishna and Arjun Rampal as Arjun do not look like the best of casting ideas.

          Like

        • NTR used to play Krishna and Rama too and he used to be impeccable with all those dialogue deliveries. Telugu filmdom has explored every part of Mahabharata cinematically. And NTR played even Raavan Brahma with style. In bollywood, none have the looks or connect to play those roles. The best outing was BR Chopra’s Mahabharat which was a tv series. Rajamouli having telugu background can surely do justice if he selects actors with care.

Akshay Kumar’s Best Actor win at the 64th National Awards drew mixed reactions from audience and critics. While some thought that there were other actors who deserved the award, others congratulated the actor on his much deserved and long-awaited win.

There were also those who thought Akshay was given the award due to his closeness to Priyadarshan who headed the National Awards jury. Now, Akshay has opened up on the controversy surrounding it.
When asked if he got this award due to Priyadarshan, Akshay told Mumbai Mirror, “I have completed 25 years in the film industry and I’ve never called in a favour to bag a movie or an award. As for Priyan favouring me, I think he has answered that question in your newspaper.”

Akshay also shared his excitement on getting the award and said that his happiness lies in making his wife Twinkle Khanna happy. “I’m very happy. I consider it the blessings of my parents and the good wishes of my family. Mrs Funnybones (wife Twinkle Khanna) who always teased me on not getting any awards is happy and my happiness lies in making her happy.”

Akshay’s upcoming film Toilet – Ek Prem Katha will release on the Independence Day weekend alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s next film which is being directed by Imtiaz Ali. Speaking about the big clash, Akshay said “My film is coming on August 11 because it’s a big date and an opportune time. Besides, Independence Day, there is another holiday in the same week. Such long weekends can easily take two big releases. Ghayal and Dil clashed, as did Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Lagaan.”

We are mostly dealing with the physical aspects now, but in (the upcoming) stages, we will complete the circle,” he added. A lot of his colleagues, including his Kaabil co-star Yami Gautam, Dia Mirza and Anupam Kher, re-tweeted the video, calling it inspirational.

The Keep Going video, also featuring the 43-year-old actor, promotes the idea of rising back from one’s failures, never stopping and keep going till one achieves his or her best.

Begum Jaan had a very poor first day as it grossed just 3.50 crore nett despite it being a holiday. In real terms the collections are just 2.75 crore nett or 3 crore nett at best. These collections are lower than Ok Jaanu, Phillauri and Naam Shabana which were also dull but they did not have holidays.

Fast & Furious 8 grossed 11 crore nett plus on Friday which a holiday for Good Friday and Ambedkar Jayanti. The Friday ensures a big Hit but remains to be seen if it can challenge Fast & Furious 7 in terms of weekend business and lifetime business. Fast & Furious had a four day weekend where the film grossed 48 crore nett. This film can challenge that but it will be in four and a half days though a lot depends on what happens on Saturday as there are chances it may not grow or even drop a little. The collections of Fast & Furious 8 till date are as follows.

    Wednesday (Paid Previews) – 5,50,00,000

    Thursday – 9,25,00,000

    Friday – 11,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 26,00,00,000 apptx

The film is not scoring as well in HIndi as the last film though collections of the English version are better compared to the first two fulls of both films. Mysore is doing excellent business recording over 1 crore nett on the first three days and and a three day total of 3.40 crore nett which is similar to the collections in Delhi / UP.

    http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/well-meet-salman-khan-and-discuss-the-clash-with-tubelight-reveals-sunny-deols-bhaiyyaji-superhit-producer-mahindra-dhariwal/

We’ll meet Salman Khan and discuss the clash, reveals Sunny Deol’s Bhaiyyaji Superhit producer

EXCLUSIVE: Sunny Deol’s Bhaiyyaji Superhit producer, Mahindra Dhariwal opens up about the clash with Salman Khan’s Tubelight…

We revealed to you a while ago as to how Salman Khan‘s buddy, Sunny Deol, will be clashing with the superstar this Eid. Salman had already blocked the release date of Tubelight for June 23 a few weeks ago. However, the producer of Sunny Deol’s Bhaiyyaji Superhit has announced their release date today. The team has selected the same release date even though they knew about Tubelight occupying the slot. But they aren’t worried about clashing with such a massive film. As producer Mahindra Dhariwal revealed to us exclusively, “After finalising the date, we had a meeting with the distributors. The picture has strong content and it has come out well, so I don’t have an issues clashing with Salman Khan’s Tubelight. The occasion is great, there is a festival (Eid), so two films can release together and perform well. I don’t think Tubelight will have an impact on our collections. It is a festival period, so our film will perform as it has to.”

The team of Bhaiyyaji Superhit is also adamant for getting a big release and they won’t settle for less. As the producer added, “We want 2500 screens and we have spoken to our distributor. We might be able to get 2000 screens easily. It is not a small film, it is a big release. We have Sunny Deol, Arshad Warsi, Preity Zinta, Ameesha Patel. It is a comedy action film on the lines of Golmaal and has Sunny Deol in a double role.” (ALSO READ – Salman Khan’s this actor friend is ready to clash with Tubelight at the box office – read details)

But is the team planning to talk to Salman Khan to find a way out of the clash? Mahindra clarifies, “We haven’t spoken to Salman yet, but we will meet him personally to talk about the clash. But we are prepared for the clash. Sunny Deol will not be there during the meeting with the distributors or with Salman Khan. He has told me that I am the producer, so I know what is right and I should do that.”

Generally stars tend to avoid clashes with Salman Khan because his films take up majority of the screens. But the makers of Bhaiyyaji Superhit team feel that their film will do well even with stiff competition from Tubelight. As the producer told us, “Clashes are common now. Raees–Kaabil had a clash recently and according to me, if the content is good and it is a festival period, then two films can easily sustain.”

  12. As many as eight people were charged with murder and terrorism on Saturday in the mob lynching of a Abdul Wali Khan university student Mashal Khan over allegations of blasphemy, reported GeoNews TV. The accused, all students belonging to the same university, were remanded in police custody for four days by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan’s Mardan district.

The students were identified from a video footage of the incident, in which Khan is seen being dragged in a hallway and then on the road of the campus, covered in blood, PTI reported. Khan, a mass communication student at the university, was stripped, beaten, shot and then thrown off the second floor of his hostel at the university. Four others were arrested in connection with the case on Saturday, GeoNews TV added.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday strongly condemned the lynching incident and said the entire nation should try to promote tolerance in society, reported Dawn. “The state will never tolerate those who take the law in their own hands,” Sharif said, adding that he was “shocked and saddened” by the “senseless” display of mob justice.

“No father should have to send his child off to be educated, with the fear of having him return in a coffin,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak on Saturday said there was no evidence found to suggest that Khan had committed blasphemy. “The mobile phone record of the victim has been checked by the police, but there was nothing against Islam,” he said while speaking in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on Saturday demanded that all those involved in the lynching of Khan be brought to justice, reported Al Jazeera. “The state’s abject failure to protect Mashal Khan’s right to life has created great panic and horror among students and academia,” it said in a statement.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Begum Jaan sealed its fate on the second day itself as the collections dropped from a low start in the first place. The film was released on a holiday and had to put up some sort of number but failed to do so and then the poor reports came into play. The film grossed in the 3.25 crore nett on its second day after a 3.50 crore nett day one (holiday) but if we take the real value of day one at 2.75 crore nett it is not even 20% growth and a content film can’t survive with that sort of growth. It will just about get over a 10 crore nett weekend. The film has done slightly better in North possibly due to border setting but that hardly matters. The business of Begum Jaan on the first two days is as follows.

    Friday – 3,50,00,000

    Saturday – 3,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 6,75,00,000

Fast & Furious 8 maintained good business on Saturday. The collections did drop but it was coming off a holiday and they are still higher than its first full day. The film is a HIT and now it remains to be seen if it can reach the four day weekend and lifetime figures of Fast & Furious 7. The business in the hindi version suggests it will be tough but Monday will tell. The collections of Fast & Furious 8 till date are as follows.

    Wednesday (Paid Previews) – 5,50,00,000

    Thursday – 9,25,00,000

    Friday – 11,25,00,000

In Noor, Sonakshi plays a journalist who idolises Barkha Dutt, but the CBFC has asked the makers to edit the surname Dutt.

When asked about it, Sonakshi told IANS: “The censor board really needs to come to a consensus within themselves on what is right in one film… Is not right in another film.”

“There is no consistency in what they censor or what they uncensor, so I think they first need to come to a consensus.”

    • Diwali is a great day for Golmaal 4…Robot might be a big movie in South but is really no match for the Golmaal franchise in the West and North…But you will still have a problem of screen share irrespective of which is the movie the audience seeks…
Secret Superstar might suffer the most here as it can get squeezed…

      Like

      • It wont matter to Secret Superstar. Its audience is different and its looking at around 1000 screens for a content release.

Golmaal and 2.0 will eat into each other’s screen count and overall business. Neither will do much beyond 100 cr.

        Like

      • There are lot more stakes for both Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty here than when compared to Rajni, Akshay or Aamir.
G4 was the first to announce its Diwali release. So i can understand their problem now. Funny that media is now paiting as if G4 is clashing with 2.0 and SS

        Like

        • Least at stake is Secret Superstar which is really a low budget film. Rohit Shetty’s is a medium budget one.

Whereas 2.0 is reportedly made with a budget of 350-400 cr. The makers need to recover a chunk of it from the Hindi version here (thats why Akshay was brought on, although he charged a fortune). Without doubt 2.0 has most at stake here. And a 100 cr total wont qualify it as a success, unlike other Akshay movies.

          Like

      • But Golmal 4 will suffer in the south. Secret superstar can be released after 2 weeks from diwali as theatres will be free by then. I agree Secret Superstar should not be released between two biggies. Even 1000 screens will be a big deal as the biggies want to catch the initial.

        Like

        • An Aamir film (even in a supporting role) wont find it difficult to get 1000 odd multiplex screens, even if a bunch of other movies are releasing together. And thats OK because its not looking at an initial but to pick up WOM. What it needs is space to grow – for which Diwali release is the best as there are no big releases for a month after Diwali (till Padmavati on Nov 17th).

        • 2.0 budget is huge. If not good then will be big risk with the clash involved. Golmaal will do what its supposed to do. A business around Golmaal 3 with the clash. It will be funny if SS emerges the winner among these with wom

          Liked by 1 person

  19. The clash should be averted. If SS is really for some audience, they will patronise even if it is released 2 weeks after Diwali. By that time the steam will be lessened for the biggies. It is a question of screens and biggies will want all the screens they can lay their hands on. I still feel aamir should choose some other date.

    Like

    • Number of screens is not a priority for SS. Say it doesnt get 1000 screens but less than that. Even then its OK cause it is not in the race for an initial. If the movie is good then it will pick up WOM and grow. Screens can get added later on. Small hollywood films usually gets limited release and if they work then slowly they increase the screen count.

People will show up more during festive season than 2 weeks later. And that should help the WOM.

Anyways, all this is considering the movie turns out well. Otherwise it wont work no matter when its released.

    • I dont think 2.0 is a big movie for the Hindi market…Robot itself hardly did well in Hindi markets…..Bahubali was different. It was not meant for Hindi audience too but it struck such a big chord that the second part is now the most awaited movie. The same cannot be said for 2.0..And I am not even sure if Shankar can make a Pan India movie like Raja Mouli…But anyways that’s a post release thing.

As things stand now, G4 is definitely the bigger movie in Diwali for most non South states. Gujarat, Mumbai, North all will go for G4 first…Now when I say 2.0 is not a big movie, am not referring to the budget obviously. No doubt the budget is gargantuan, the South markets will be huge but G4 can very much rule over the rest if it is as good as the earlier 3 parts. No doubt Shankar was looking at around 100 crs from Hindi market or maybe more and that’s why Akshay was cast. But unfortunately the clash with G4 will affect 2.0 more due to its budget..

On SS, its a misconception that Aamir is looking for a 40 cr hit here. If that was the case he would have not moved the movie to Diwali. He is obviously targeting a decent total…It may not open huge but he expects it to reach a good total during the holiday weekend. Of course he wouldn’t have known that G4 will move back to Diwali…It wont be a bad idea for Aamir to shift again back to a different date. SS can get crushed between G4 and Robot…

      • Before Golmaal arrived my predictometer was 150 cr for 2.0 and 100 odd crores for SS.

With Golmaal in the picture its now 100 cr or all 3 of them – of course, I am not talking of the opening here but the end total. SS will easily have the longest run in theaters out of the three.

        Like

        • The arrival of Golmaal does change the equations for this Diwali. As much as I am not really a fan of the franchise (in fact these films are pure torture!), it certainly has the potential to be quite big.

It will certainly hit 2.0 in the northern territories. Remember one of the Golmaal sequels comfortably beat Action Replay, despite Akshay Kumar going quite strong back then and despite the presence of Aishwarya Rai.

Anyway, 2.0’s major target is the Southern centres and, no matter what, it will be huge there. It is not as if it was expected to gross over 200cr in the north. But Golmaal is going to take quite some shows and screens as well as a major chunk of the audience in the north. I think for 2.0 they would now settle for the usual 100-130cr range that Akshay Kumar usually guarantees on his own these days.

But SS will, IMO, face a tall order now to reach huge figures. People are aware that it is not an Aamir Khan film. His presence will lift the numbers to a certain extent, but one can see that it is going to be 3rd choice there. Golmaal will affect both movies.

        • Golmaal will be the first choice for masala loving audience. SS will be the first choice for multiplex audience and those who look for meaningful content.

2.0 will work for normal Akki audience. VFX dont have exclusive attraction in the Indian market (thats why so few of these get made here).

I dont see how any of these can possibly do more than 100 cr this Diwali, unless exceptional content and WOM takes over – which may be the case for SS. I might be bullish here, but SS is likely to be a high content film, specially ahead of a YRF movie with D3 director (not a fan of D3).

  21. The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to respond to a petition filed by filmmaker Amol Palekar, challenging the “pre-censorship” of movies. In its notice to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the bench has asked the Centre to direct the Central Board of Film Certification to implement the recommendations of the Shyam Benegal-led panel, PTI reported.

    • The report seems incorrect. It was the first hearing of the matter of so as per legal twitter sites only notice is issued. Also legally on first hearing only notice can be issued as validity of provisions have been challenged. There may have been discussion on some panel during arguments or open dialogue but otherside or opponents are not present, they will appear through lawyer and file reply etc. Counters will come.

But lets wait for the order of the court in written text. Should be uploaded by evening.

Fast & Furious 8 Excellent But Less Than Predecessor
    Monday 17 April 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fast & Furious 8 did very good business over its extended five days racking up around 47.50 crore nett. If we take the three day weekend its is the second highest opening ever for a Hollywood release in India behind Fast & Furious 7. The film is a HIT and possibly SUPER HIT depending on how the weekdays hold but there is a negative which is that it has not matched the last film as far as the initial goes. That film had a four day weekend and if we take like for like be it three or four days the collections remain 4-5 crore nett less.

The collections in most markets across the world (China was an insane $190 million) have set records for the franchise but that has not happened in India. Even the extended 4 days plus paid previews has fallen a little short of the four day weekend of Fast & Furious 7. The collections of Fast & Furious 8 till date are as follows.

    Wednesday (Paid Previews) – 5,50,00,000

    Thursday – 9,25,00,000

Begum Jaan had a very poor weekend with business of 10.50 crore nett and a poor trend. The trend was also always going to struggle as its hard to grow off a holiday so basically day one has to have some sort of collection. The film has collected lower than all the 1000 plus screen count films released since Badrinath Ki Dulhania apart from Machine. The film had Fast & Furious 8 for competition but thats not the reason for the poor collections, its the content. The budget of the film is low compared to many recent releases but the weekend leaves it no chance to cover as unless there is a miracle on Monday, the final share of the film will struggle to be even 10 crore and with such a poor theatrical result, the film just won’t work on other platforms. The business of Begum Jaan over the first weekend is as follows.

    Friday – 3,50,00,000

Kaatru Veliyidai opened with 375 shows and lost close to 280 shows by the end of its 2nd week, thanks to a flurry of new releases. Behindwoods box office wing has given the film an Average verdict, and we will have to wait and see if there is a change in the verdict in the coming weeks.

    Begum Jaan First Monday Business
    Tuesday 18 April 2017 11.00 IST

Begum Jaan continued its poor run with business of 1.50 crore nett. If we factor in that it was a holiday on day one and that real value collections were probably 2.75-3 crore nett then the fall is actually 50% or less but that is still too much for a film that had such a low start. The holds are a little better in the North especially UP but nothing can alter the fate of the film unless of course Monday had been close to its Friday figure. That is the objective of every content film. Begum Jaan has grossed 12 crore nett in four days and will close the week at around 15.50 crore nett which is very poor and another addition to the flop list. The business of Begum Jaan over the first four days is as follows.

    Tuesday 18 April 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Fast & Furious 8 had a good hold on Monday as it grossed 5 crore nett which is a 55% drop from Friday but that was a holiday and on top the film has had an extended run which makes it a solid Monday. The real value drop is probably around 45%. The film now stands at around 52.50 crore nett and the week should be able to cross the 65 crore nett, This will be lower than Fast & Furious 7 which was around 69 crore nett.

The film has done very well with the only problem being that it is unlikely the franchise is going to improve on the last one. The film did not release on E digital theatres like the last one and this could be one of the reasons that the film will stay below Fast & Furious 7. The collections of Fast & Furious 8 till date are as follows.

Considering the response for Aamir Khan’s previous films, Dangal too is expected to be doing some trend breaking business in the country. But before the official release for the public, Dangal was screened at the Beijing International Film Festival on Sunday night. Titled Shuaijiao Baba (Let’s Wrestle Father), we hear the film received a massive response during the festival.

Moreover, we hear that Aamir Khan also met up with some renowned names from the Chinese film industry. Apparently the actor interacted with actress Liu Yifei and television star Wu Gang.

Bayern 2-1 up in the second half.

Casemiro (Real Madrid) deserves to get a 2nd yellow for a bad tackle. Ref opts to be lenient. Minutes later he sends off a Bayern player when the latter wins the ball absolutely fair and square. You won’t see a more ridiculous sending off.

Then 2 offside goals from Madrid and Ronaldo are allowed to stand.

    You’ll rarely see worse officiating.

Scandalous red card for Bayern while a few minutes before Casemiro should have been sent off. At that point Bayern were leading 2-1 and were looking the better side. If Casemiro was rightly sent off, there looked no way Real would have had a chance to win it.

But the ref decided otherwise. A scandalous sending off plus 2 offside goals, There can’t be a bigger gift offered by any referee.

At the end of the day, it was the ref who decided the game on his own. And it’s very wrong. Even someone as calm as Ancelotti looked incensed,

I have seen poor officiating, but last night’s was disgusting and took it to all-time low levels. There probably is something really unlawful going behind the scenes.

As I said, I had nothing against Madrid before, but it was so disgusting last night that I just hope they get booted off by anyone in the next round. But looking at UEFA’s agenda, it is unlikely to happen.

To be more specific, he revealed that, there was a huge hurricane angle which did not work at all. Karan Johar admitted that, he had pulled it off really badly. At the same time, he had then thought that the intention of the film would tide it through. Karan Johar, who, self-confessedly, wanted to win the ‘Best Director’ award for the film, was satisfied after winning it and also after getting five stars and four and a half star rating from the film critics.

It was a decent film by Bollywood’s standards, nothing more. But the motives (trying to capitalise on the issue of terrorism, on 09/11, handle it cheaply and artificially while lives are lost and there everyday, just to find favour with a particular audience) are really suspect, to put it mildly.

I remember Nikhat Kazmi called it better than Forrest Gump. The hilarity of that review is the best thing the film offered to me, personally.

  44. A Decent Quarter But Trouble Ahead Till Tubelight
    Thursday 20 April 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The first quarter has been a decent one for Hindi cinema with record figures but that can also be put down to a delayed film Raees being pushed into this year which enable the first quarter to have a good line up of releases. But what can’t be hidden is that the two biggest openers at an an all India level so far this year are Telugu films (Khaidi No.150, Katamarayudu) despite a Shahrukh Kan starrer and Bahubali is still to come which will make it top three. On top last week, a well promoted Hindi film Begum Jaan could not even stand in front of Fast & Furious 8 and even a Punjabi film will end up doing similar lifetime business despite just a 300 screen release across India against the 1200 plus of Begum Jaan. These things were unthinkable in the past as Hindi cinema dominated the show.

There does not seem much respite for Hindi cinema as Noor will set a low and then again its mainly South and Hollywood till Tubelight. There is Bahubali and then Hollywood releases like The Mummy, Pirates Of The Carribean – Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. The only fight from Hindi cinema may come from Half Girlfriend which looks a nice love story with at least one hit song.

The Mummy will clash with Raabta and from the theatrical trailers its pretty much certain that The Mummy has more to offer the audiences even in India than the so called Hindi film. Raabta is a so called Hindi film as barring the language its an embarrassment to Hindi cinema with nothing that is relevant to todays audience and just follows the path of a Mirzya and Rangoon.

Then it will be basically down to the holiday period and a Khan superstar to deliver a blow from H

Noor Is Everything A Hindi Film Should NOT Be
    Thursday 20 April 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Begum Jaan came last week and opened to the lowest numbers of all the small / medium films be it Ok Jaanu, Phillauri or Naam Shabana and that despite it being a holiday but worse looks set to come this week with Noor. This is looking to be the worst of the lot before the fireworks with Bahubali (dubbed) next week. Basically Noor is everything a Hindi film should NOT be as its a typical urban slice of life film which offers no action, comedy, romance, drama or emotions and at least one of these is needed just to get the audience interested let alone have a successful film. On top the storytelling style looks totally alien for the audience.

A slice of life film like Dear Zindagi may have worked recently but that is due to Shahrukh Khan, the same film without him is a flop even with an Alia Bhatt. Here with Noor there is no Alia Bhatt but Sonakshi Sinha. Last week’s Begum Jaan had Vidya Balan and Sonakshi Sinha may possibly be more popular but the promos are worse than Begum Jaan and thats the telling fact. Begum Jaan had a poor promo but the content could not be written off but with Noor there seems no content also. There are a few peppy songs but they look an after thought as they don’t seem to have space in the narrative that the theatrical trailer presents. This makes sure half decent songs add nothing to the film.

The film will probably have the lowest opening numbers of a well promoted film in recent times and they could be so low that the film will find it impossible to recover.

How Will Sonakshi’s Noor & Raveena Tandon’s Maatr Fare At The Box Office?
From the opening perspective, Noor would start better due to its larger commercial appeal.
    By
    Joginder Tuteja –
    April 20, 2017

It is a clash of a different kind as Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor and Raveena Tandon’s Maatr take on each other at the Box Office. Noor comes across as a film that should bring in some sort of entertainment value through comic relief and breezy moments. Since Sonakshi Sinha has demonstrated her comic timing in the past, one expects her to lead the show well here. On the other hand Maatr picks up a serious issue and aims to act as an eye opener affair. Raveena Tandon has done a few serious films in the past and now that she is making her big screen comeback with this one, she is expected to excel well.

From the opening perspective, Noor would start better due to its larger commercial appeal. That said, it would be on a relative scale since as an absolute number it would all depend on the word of mouth. 2017 so far has seen only those films open really well [50%+ occupancy] which have been led by superstars. Others have all opened in the 20%-30% range at best and this is what can be expected out of Noor as well. However, the film has the kind of theme which can see better occupancy towards the evening shows. Moreover, there is Sonakshi Sinha in there and that adds on to the face value.

As for Maatr, it would be heavily dependent on the critical acclaim followed by word of mouth. The film would be seeing a restricted release at the Box Office and for the exhibitors to continue showing their trust in its run, it would have to show a turnaround over the weekend itself otherwise it would find tough going during the weekdays.

  47. Akshay Kumar Should Have Won Many Years Ago, Says Karan Johar About Controversial National Award

Actor Akshay Kumar’s colleagues from Bollywood have contributed little to the noise about his National Award win and now, filmmaker Karan Johar blames ‘perception’ for the criticism of Akshay’s performance in Rustom being awarded over the likes of Aamir Khan in Dangal and Manoj Bajpayee in Aligarh. Speaking to NDTV, Karan Johar said, “Some of us just don’t get our due because there is a perception of us. There is a perception that I make these bubblegum, NRI-friendly, glossy, glamorous, first world films and that Akshay Kumar is this major movie star who has always done mainstream work.” Weeks ago, there was an outcry when the National Award jury, chaired by filmmaker Priyadarshan, announced Akshay Kumar as this year’s Best Actor – for a film that was widely panned as was his performance in it.

Karan Johar, who is great friends with Akshay’s wife Twinkle Khanna and invited the couple to his chat show Koffee With Karan in the previous season, doesn’t agree that Akshay’s win was without merit and says he ought to be ‘applauded’ and ‘appreciated.’ “I think Akshay Kumar should have won this award many years ago, he is truly the most amazing mind in the business. He is a very dedicated talented hardworking man. I am so glad he won his National Award. He deserves it ,” Mr Johar told NDTV, adding, “I hope I win one, one day, as well.”

Much of the carping over Akshay Kumar’s elevation over Aamir, Manoj and Mohanlal, who Priyadarshan revealed was the Rustom star’s only competition, has been attributed to favouritism on the part of the jury chief. Priyadarshan has directed Akshay in several films, the cult comedy Hera Pheri and it’s sequel included, as he has Mohanlal in Malayalam cinema. Priyadarshan has dismissed his critics, asking why Amitabh Bachchan being awarded the National Award for Piku by a jury headed by his Sholay director Ramesh Sippy hadn’t been similarly questioned. He told news agency PTI, “When Ramesh Sippy was jury head Amitabh Bachchan won. When Prakash Jha was head of jury, Ajay Devgn won. So none questioned at that time. So why all these questions are cropping up today.”

Then none of the other actor’s case would have been doubted as noone could have pulled the dual HF3 act more convincingly.
