Baahubali 2, the rest of the box office

  1. I think movies like Dangal and Baahubali are going to be good for the industry. You have extremely talented people dedicating 2 or 3 years of their lives to these movies. The dedication and passion show on screen.

It only raises the bar for everyone else. Remember only a few years back we had Golmaal 3 as one of the biggest hindi grossers (in the top 5). But since then we have had movies like 3 Idiots, PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali that have raised the bar much higher.

Last year, Salman was probably happy with Sultan’s performance. But then he was most probably overwhelmed by Dangal’s quality and those collections. He even admitted to that. He probably is aware that he needs something as good as Bajrangi to get anywhere near there again. A ‘Ready’ or ‘Bodyguard’ isn’t going to do it anymore. The bar has been set higher. And he is probably attempting that with Tubelight.

The problem is with the standard set by Baahubali in its genre. I can’t see anyone in Bollywood currently having the creative vision to succeed in the genre. It obviously demands huge investments but it also demands the kind of creative imagination that has rarely (or IMO never) been seen in Bollywood. Lots of money were invested in Ra1, Krish 3, Drona or Mohenjodaro. But the results were disappointing. You can see that even after the stupendous success of the Baahubali-first part, not one project in the same genre or scale has been announced in Bollywood.

I think that, as much as I liked Dangal, Aamir can do (and has done) better. PK for me was better. 3 Idiots was better. He can create something like Dangal again or even better. You always expect something as good from him.

But doing something as good as Baahubali in its genre does not seem given right now in Bollywood’s context. The standard set by the first part is way too high right now. It’s not that I am under-estimating the creative vision of current Bollywood directors. But I feel that may be only if Rajamouli himself decides to direct something here, only then we stand a chance to see an epic hindi film as good as Baahubali.

    • Yes, I agree that Bollywood directors lack the imagination and vision to some up with something like Baahubali.

Thats why I am really hoping that Rajamouli takes this same genre and does a Bollywood movie next. Would love to see Aamir in it.

Aamir-Rajamouli would be a killer combo.

  2. Baahubali 2 is opening with paid previews all over AP and Telangana tomorrow (April 27) from 7 in the evening.

    Day 1 expectations so far:

    AP/T – 45-50Cr share (including paid previews)
    Karnataka – 10 Cr share
    Kerala – 3 Cr share
    TN – 10 Cr share
    Hindi – 12-15 Cr Share

    India – 80 Cr

That’s more than 100 Cr Nett from India alone and that too on a single day. Gross will be more than 120 Cr.

In Overseas US alone is expected to fetch 30 Cr Gross on first day (premiere+Friday). Total Worldwide gross will be more than 150 Cr on first day of the release. Going by the release size and prices I’ll be disappointed personally if this is not the minimum gross, even though there is absolutely nothing in its vicinity to compare.

This is the trade expectation. Let’s see what the likes of Taran Adarsh will have to say when these numbers turn out to be true.

Yes, bollywood cant compete Baahubali type of mega drama. Next Dhoom series can compete in terms of investment and all India appeal if it tries some innovation and experiment. And audience is assured for this franchise. Come to think of it, even Dhoom is a fantasy on modern lines.

People were quick to point out how it affected Bajrangi Bhaijaan run, the opposite is true too.

This movie might be really huge but can we please stop comparing the FX with hollywood? Bahubali might be the best india has to offer but it’s not a patch to hollywood when it comes to FX…not even in the same freakin universe. Just watch this scene and tell me if its not laughable by hollwyood’s standards

      • But to be fair to Bahubali the beginning, it’s budget was paltry 120 Crore & in comparison hollywood invests 10 to 20 times more money to make their movies look far more credible & authentic, be it on vfx or other expensive technical requirements. Give Rajamouli 1000 crores, he’d “wreck havoc” on celluloid through his vision!! ROI should also be kept in mind as movies made on budget of 250 & 400 crores grossing 500 & 700 crores would not be such an incredible feat as opposed to a 80 crore movie returning with almost 400 crore gross, so logic & common sense should not be put aside in the deluge caused by Baahubali 2!!

  9. Summons through WhatsApp? The Bombay HC may have just set a new precedent

Aditya AK April 26, 2017 Litigation News, News
    Gautam Patel
Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay High Court is known for his inventive judgments, and this time, he might have just started a judicial trend.

The case was a copyright infringement suit against the producers of the Kannada movie โ€˜Pushpaka Vimanaโ€™ released in 2017. The defendants in the case proved to be particularly evasive, with the plaintiffs doing virtually everything to serve summons on them.

In the end, they found the mobile number of one of the producers โ€“ confirmed to be his by the TrueCaller app โ€“ and sent him the summons via WhatsApp. The defendant received the same and replied, โ€˜I dint understand anything. Will check with my legal team and Iโ€™ll text you back. I am out of station.โ€™ Both defendants were also served summons through email.

Justice Patel noted in his order dated March 23,

โ€œI do not see what more can be done for the purposes of this Motion. It cannot be that our rules and procedure are either so ancient or so rigid (or both) that without some antiquated formal service mode through a bailiff or even by beat of drum or pattaki, a party cannot be said to have been โ€˜properlyโ€™ served.

The purpose of service is put the other party to notice and to give him a copy of the papers. The mode is surely irrelevant. We have not formally approved of email and other modes as acceptable simply because there are inherent limitation to proving service. Where an alternative mode is used, however, and service is shown to be effected, and is acknowledged, then surely it cannot be suggested that the Defendants had โ€˜no noticeโ€™โ€ฆ

โ€ฆDefendants who avoid and evade service by regular modes cannot be permitted to take advantage of that evasion.โ€

He went on to show how the โ€œinvasivenessโ€ of technology could be used to scupper attempts at avoiding court summons.

โ€œIf Vikhyat and Krishna (the producers) believe they can resort to these tactics to avoid service, they are wrong. They may succeed in avoiding a bailiff. They may be able to avoid a courier or a postman. They have reckoned without the invasiveness of information technology. Vikhyat in particular does not seem to have cottoned on to the fact that when somebody calls him and he responds, details can be obtained from in-phone apps and services, and these are very hard to either obscure or disguise.โ€

Despite these attempts to reach out to them, the defendants did not reply to the notice of motion and failed to appear in court.

Coming to the case itself, it was contended by the petitioners โ€“ represented by Dr. Birendra Saraf and Ankita Singh of A&P Partners โ€“ that the Kannada movie was a copy of the Korean film titled โ€˜Miracle in Cell No. 7โ€™, released in 2013.

Justice Patel prima facie agreed with the arguments made by the petitioners that Pushpaka Vimana was โ€œa colourable imitation of the Korean originalโ€, based on fifteen instances set out in the plaint. Consequently, he granted an interim stay on the further exhibition, distribution and telecast of the movie.

The case was listed for April 12, and then April 20, but no further orders have been published on the Bombay High Court website.

Whether Justice Patelโ€™s reluctance to stick to โ€œantiquated and formal service modesโ€ will be followed by other judges is what remains to be seen.

Kangna Ranaut is a talented star. The actress has always taken up meaty roles and given some incredible performances in the past. Now, Kangna Ranaut has opted for another meaty role in Hansal Mehtaโ€™s upcoming comedy-drama, Simran. It turns out that Kangna will be credited as co-writer with script-writer Apurva Asrani.

A very few people are aware that Kangna Ranaut has done a screenplay writing course in New York in the past. According to Hansal Mehta, when she was approached with the script, she loved it so much that she came onboard to co-write it with Apurva Asrani. Hansal called her an incredible talent. He said that he is happy that Kangna with her collaboration has helped make Simran a fun family film. He was very impressed with her since Queen and even more so because she had penned down some scenes and collaborated on the script of that lovely film. He is thankful that after Queen they have a similar collaboration in their film.

Praising her writing skills, Hansal Mehta further added that Kangna must continue to write. He called her sharp, instinctive and someone who has a great sense of character.

Besides Kangna Ranaut, Hansal Mehta has had long time collaboration with Apurva Asrani who was screenwriter-editor on Rajkummar Rao starrer Shahid. He also wrote story, screenplay, dialogues and helped in editing for Manoj Bajpayee starrer Aligarh which went on to become one of the highly appreciated films last year. He was the script advisor and editor on CityLights as well.

BOI are fans of hindi films with the traditional ingredients and especially ones that have appeal to the northern territories. You must have noticed they occasionally mention the release of Punjabi films and they even report the collections. But they never do it for any film down south (however big it is).

  16. REVEALED: Hereโ€™s what to expect from Bahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion

    BySubhash K. JhaApr 27, 2017 – 10:13 am IST

No one from the cast or crew let alone from outside the filmโ€™s immediate circle of participantsโ€™ collaborators and associates have seen the yearโ€™s biggest film. But the censor board has had that privilege. And a prominent CBFC member spills the beans in what can be regarded as the first full-fledged review of Bahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion.

Says the CBFC member, โ€œBahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion is in every sense bigger than the first part of the film. The second part is longer than the first part, almost three full hours. But not a moment sits heavily on the narrative. We havenโ€™t cut a single frame, shot, or a word from the dialogue. There was no moment that we could eliminate. The action sequences are this time shot far more intricately and the special effects, especially in the war scenes are on a par with what weโ€™ve seen in the best Hollywood war epics from Richard Attenboroughโ€™s A Bridge Too Far to Mel Gibsonโ€™s Hacksaw Ridge.โ€

The confrontation scenes between Prabhas and Rana Daggubatti are , according to the awestruck CBFC source, โ€œhear stoppingโ€ฆthe two of them are like restless lions in a cage ready to pounce but something keeps them from tearing at each other, I canโ€™t reveal what. Both the actors are equally impressive this time.โ€

As for the million rupee question, why did Katappa kill Baahubali, the revelation, says the CBFC source, will leave audiences โ€œstunned and disbelievingโ€

This CBFC member says Bahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion will put Indian cinema on the global map. โ€œThe stunts, the spectacle, and the performances are superior to Fast & Furious 8. Audiences will come away very very happy but also very sad. This canโ€™t be the end of the Bahubali saga!โ€

    • The broader (or is it narrower?) point I would make is that technology by itself means little if one doesn’t have the processes to support them (the train can be great, but if the driver isn’t trained…). In India, the governments always focus on big splashes and flashy announcements, but skimp on the unglamorous work of training, processes, and ensuring efficient execution (this is something they could learn from the private sector but despite 25 years of economic liberalization, refuse to do so); we see this with legislation (“we passed TADA! POTA! MCOCA!” But the policeman on the ground has no clue and is arresting people without any clue of the process; not only does this lead to innocents harassed, but the guilty who have access to good lawyers can poke holes and get away) as well as with stuff like de-monetization and AADHAR (the idea is kinda cool — execution is awful). Absent that investment in process and training, you have something that at best looks good but will disappoint on delivery; and at worst something that creates a new problem. Please note: this is NOT a left/right debate here, it’s common sense and stuff that shouldn’t be controversial (I work for a corporation the USP of which is to get the “solution” right (i.e. “technology PLUS ____”), and that should be the approach).

  22. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Smashes All Hindi Film Advance Records
    Thursday 27 April 2017 21.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion looks set to cause mayhem at the box office and we are talking about the Hindi version only and not the original and other dubbed versions. Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has taken the biggest advance ever with pre release collections set to be around 30 crore nett. The previous record was Sultan at 21 crore nett which had a five day weekend while here it is three so the the advance there was coming for five days.

This advance means that it has a good chance to the be highest non holiday opening for a Hindi film which at present is Dhoom 3 at around 32 crore nett. But the craze is at such a level that you can’t rule out a much higher collections. Records in some mass circuits are certain and it remains to be seen how the day plays out. The biggest thing is going to be that the collections are coming on a non holiday and it will hopefully show that box office can perform without holidays if the content is correct. The film is the second part of the biggest blockbuster on television in the satellite era, it has scale, action and emotions and starting tomorrow The Hindi film box office may be about to witness something very special.

We keep reiterating Hindi as including other versions its no doubt going to be an epic at the box office as Bahubali 1 itself is the highest grossing film of all time till date but this time the Hindi version figures alone could leave the industry in total awe and shock.

      • Day 1 can be close to 80 cr+ net…All versions….35 in Hindi…35 to 40 cr just in Telugu…Remaining in Tamil and Malayalam. The ticket prices are 100% more than other movies. Bangalore Cinepolis is at 600 Rs lowest ticket with slabs of 700 and 800 Rs…Usually they charge around 250 to 300…

        • The first part was seen as rattling Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s run, but on whatever screen count it had, it did abnormal business against the tide. Now it will deconstruct the poor Hindi film industry that is star reliant. It will most probably have 100 CR weekend in a not too fanciful weekend with no holidays. 200 CR is a cakewalk from here. 300 CR quite easy and I reckon if it’s anything supremely made like first part, Dangal can be challenged. WW I think it’s quite obviously going to be the biggest grosser out of India IF it has a good response. These types of films are more like Avatar and they can have long runs at box office. FYI I have not seen first part but am smelling the coffee here. The content is always king. If a non star driven, non Hindi film is doing this it’s a big indicator that Hindi cinema is struggling bar the odd Aamir film every other year and Salman film each year.

The savage reality is compared to population, cinema in India is barely scrapping the barrel. The Hollywood influx is another indicator.

First part did 5+ multiple of previous biggest South film. That is abnormal so it’s hardly surprising how huge the film is set to be and further underlines how far back Bollywood has fallen.

Baahubali 2 is epic in every sense. In the process of waiting for the big answer about why Kattappa killed Baahubali, SS Rajamouli takes us on a ride that we won’t forget anytime soon.

The film will go down in history as an emotional action drama which didn’t shy away from taking a huge leap of faith and narrating a story which leaves you teary-eyed at some level.

The visual grandeur of Baahubali 2 is a notch higher compared to Baahubali: The Beginning, but more than anything, Baahubali 2 is yet another example why Rajamouli is one of the finest filmmakers we have. Go watch Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. It is an experience of a lifetime.

  32. Just saw Bahubali 2. Had to pay 45$ for the ticket for a show that was addd at the last minute. Even then the theatre was half full.

The Telugu dialogues were excellent unlike the first half where they were jarring. For once the subtitles were done correctly; they used the word “trousseau” for Telugu “saare ” which was good.

Biggest drawback is that there is no set piece like the Kalakeya battle in the first part. But that’s not a drawback as such because Rajamouli fills his VFX and imagination into creating the world of Mahishmati. There was a scene in Lord of the Rings where two tall statues sit guarding the kingdom of Aragon. That was the most beautiful scene of the movie where it truly managed to evoke epic wonder. Most of the Bahubali 2 is filled with visuals like that (the elephant which guards the Mahishmati kingdom is just one such visual) and that is its biggest strength. For lovers of fantasy genre like me, it was like being taken to a candy store.

Most of the movie is plot driven and character driven. Both Rana and Prabhas have acted much better than the first half. Anushka probably has the key role in the movie as it is around her that the plot turns. Why Kattappa killed Bahubali was very plausible and part of the story line rather than some inane reason all three Nasser Sathya Raj and Ramos Krishna have bigger roles than the first half and they are consistent.

All in all a very engrossing movie with really epic visuals for once the word epic is well deserved.

he next new release isn’t going “wide” per se, but it’s definitely going to have an impact on the box office as Great India Films releases Baahubali 2: The Conclusion into ~450 North American theaters of which 45 or so will be showing the film in IMAX and about 50 will show the film on large format screens. This is nearly double the number of screens Baahubali: The Beginning opened on in 2015 when it debuted with $3.6 million and we’re told early expectations for the sequel are around $7-8 million. However, those expectations could prove conservative given some of the reporting around this film, which has reportedly brought in over $3 million in pre-sales, much of which are for Thursday night showings alone.

  36. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Takes Historic Bumper Opening
    Friday 28 April 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has taken a historic bumper opening of 75-80%. The opening is the best for years, possibly the biggest in real terms this decade. This is happening with a dubbed film and its just staggering. Across the all the circuits the film has created havoc. The bumper opening in Punjab, Delhi and West Bengal ensures a huge opening day number as these are the areas where the film could have faltered as the audience here does not take well to films with South Indian stars and dubbed films from South. But Bahubali 2 – the Conclusion is a different kettle of fish as it conquers these markets as well.

Nothing like this has ever happened on a non holiday in years though being a non holiday the pace may slow at certain times of the day. If this pace continues, the film is going create new first day records in every Hindi film circuit from Mumbai to Punjab to Rajasthan to Odisha. Even if the film does set records in all these circuits it may not be enough for an opening day record as far as Hindi films go. This is because there is limited business from the South as they have their own versions playing in the various circuits. Basically due to this the film does not have the capacity of the big event Hindi film. The capacity may not be there but the occupancy is definitely going to be higher than all the recent big Hindi releases from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo to Sultan to Dangal

The Hindi version is 12-15% short of the regular market for a Hindi film yet it is still going to challenge many of the big Hindi openers. The South versions have all opened to an earth shattering response with practically 90-100% occupancy in all the states be it Nizam / Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka or Kerala. Tamil Nadu is less than the others.

The Overseas market is all set to shatter records from Thursday results where UAE set an all time record while evening previews in USA were simply insane. A $20 million plus weekend is looking on the cards and this is when $10 million is an huge achievement.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion Takes Insane Opening | Morning Occupancy Box Office Report
The film has opened to around 95% occupancy across the country in the morning shows itself.

    By Koimoi.com Team -April 28, 2017

The Baahubali Day has finally arrived. The mother of all questions โ€“ โ€˜Why Katappa Killed Baahubaliโ€™ will finally be answered. Baahubali 2 : The Conclusion has taken the highest occupancy ever in the History of Indian Cinema.

The film has opened to around 95% occupancy across the country in the morning shows itself. Itโ€™s insane, crazy and HUGE! Friday shows in major circuits are housefull. In fact there are hardly any seats left for the late morning shows.

A record has already been set in its advance booking process, what with business coming to 36 crores in just 24 hours.

With more 6500 screens across the country, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is expected to create new benchmarks and shatter many box office records. Since the 1st part, Baahubali: The Beginning has collected around 419 crores, only in India (All Languages), the second part is expected to collect minimum 525 crores.

The biggest achievement for this film, is that it has got this kind of response despite being a Non-Bollywood film. It can become the biggest Non-Holiday opener of all time and that being an Hindi dubbed version.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has already shattered the records of Dangal and Sultanโ€˜s Advance Booking sales.

The craze down south is unimaginable as it is almost running housefull everywhere. Prabhas is being hailed as Rajinikanth in some parts of the region in South.

Till yesterday, Baahubali 2, the film has already raked in Rs 19 crores in the US only from advance bookings! The distribution company has further revealed that the advance ticket sales have already topped the list of the highest grossing Indian film (of any language) on its opening day! They have disclosed the figures officially, saying that tickets for the magnum opus are being sold at $100,000 (Rs 64 lakhs) every hour

In the south, Anushka will cement her status as one of the major heroines in terms of box office pull: Savitri, Vanisri, VijayShanti, saundarya and now Anushka. She maybe the only heroine in recent times who has managed to get substantial mileage in hero driven movies and shoulder a few big films herself.

What Baahubali does is show the future of Indian big-screen cinema, if it has to survive the onslaught of Hollywood, or move beyond Rajini, Khans, Kapoor, and Kumar, to begin with. What is not generally well know is that Arundhati was the trailblazer which started fantasy with graphics genre. Anushka was the lead and moreover, that movie didn’t have a hero. It was a huge success down south and begging to be remade in Hindi with maybe Deepika? Anyway It can be rightfully said that Anushka started the trend that’s just peaked in Bahubali 2. If this genre catches fire, then she must have the credit as a heroine to have started and ruled this genre.

        • You are really under-estimating Rajamouli here, it seems. It is not only about spectacle. It is about creative vision. And I think Aamir puts a lot of emphasis on that. I can bet Aamir would love to work with Rajamouli. And there is the fact there is substance behind Rajamouli’s creativity.

I remember a few critics were at some time in the past under-estimating the the ‘spectacle’ in Spielberg’s films. They were the ‘learned lobbies’ that liked small, independent, art dramas. Spielberg at that time affirmed that it takes a lot of creative work and creative imagination to make the huge spectacle with all the special effects on screen look real and get the audience on the edge of their seats. It took a lot creative work, he said and it was an art that should not be under-estimated.

It is not only about the money. It is about the creative vision. And we have seen so many directors in Bollywood fail in that respect.

        • The creative vision of Rajamouli is different. He has started believing that bigger, the better. Grander, the better. Just like some hollywood directors. The director of Eaga and Siri Siri Muvva has made himself a prisoner of huge expectations and he has to live upto the expectations. He cant make a Secret Superstar and get away with small earnings. He has become like Salman Khan.

        • We should not get into too many cliches.

          1. Bigger does not necessary mean worse in terms of substance. Baahubali is bigger than Eaga but it is not an inferior movie in terms of anything compared to the latter. A director with the right vision will always try to make it bigger with the objective or creating a greater cinematic experience.

2..The above theory does not always work with a lesser director. Krish 3 isn’t any better than KMG or Krish. D3 is the most expensive Bollywood movie ever but is generally regarded as the weakest of the Dhoom series. As much as I liked the back story inserted and the little bit of substance added, it certainly was no Sholay or PK or Forrest Gump! It was a film caught in the middle of nowhere and most neutral people seem to prefer D2. Not every director can make bigger better. But Rajamouli certainly can.

          3. It’s not as if Aamir stars in small movies like SS almost every time. The only exceptions in his filmography in that respect in the last 20 years are TZP and DG. His movies are as big productions as Salman’s. Dangal’s production values look as big as Sultan’s. TOH is certainly going to be on a huge budget. D3 remains the most expensive Bollywood movie ever. Nothing wrong in that. He is the biggest star around and his movies deserve those production values. And they don’t usually come at the expense of substance. Just like Rajamouli’s.

      • While Rajamouli is important, you shouldn’t overlook Kodi Rama Krishna the director of Arundhati and one probably started this genre. Gunashekhar is another capable director in the genre though prone to self-indulgence. The new kid on the block Krish has proved he can deliver with Gautamiputra Satakarni.

Overall, I think this genre is especially suitable for Telugu people just because it’s their most favourite genre. No other language did mythologicals as Telugu cinema did them and NTR owes his star status to them only.

        • I am not that aware of Telegu cinema, but one needs a certain way of storytelling that can have pan-India appeal. Rajamouli has proved that he has that, not sure if the other directors you mention have it in them. Its very difficult for a regional maestro to deliver pan-India blockbusters.

Baahubali 2(Hindi) has smashed the records of Sultan and Dangal in terms of initial. The gaps are bigger in the smaller centres compared to metros. Practically in every centre it is the biggest opening in recent history despite it NOT being a holiday. But that does not mean it will be an opening day record as it is playing on less centres due to Telugu and Tamil versions dominating Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu. Below are the admit figures of shows before noon with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city. All figures are from the same theatres for all films.

    Mumbai (45 Cinemas)

  47. BOI: Baahubali 2 – Goes Past 100 Cr On Day One

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion has become the first film in history to cross the 100 crore nett mark on day one. The collections will come are likely to come in higher but the minimum estimates are below. These are likely to go up further tomorrow morning. The Hindi version is on course to set records in every Hindi belt circuit. The first day looks to be closing in the 35-40 crore nett range for the Hindi version. It is a non holiday record and in the morning it could end up being an all time record despite not releasing in 12-15% of the market. The film is blazing a trail in Nizam / Andhra but that was expected. Tamil Nadu is the weakest region but still will put huge numbers. The early breakdown is as follows.

Hindi Markets – 35,00,00,000 (includes all versions released in Mumbai, North, Central and Eastern India)
    Nizam / Andhra – 45,00,00,000
    Tamil Nadu – 14,00,00,000
    Karnataka – 10,00,00,000
    Kerala – 4,00,00,000

    GRAND TOTAL – 1,08,00,00,000

Note – These are early figures andgenerally minimum nubers and it would be no surprise if the film eventually goes up to 115 crore or even 120 crore nett. The all languages are normally judged in GROSS and not NETT but that will be an even higher number which is just unthinkable.

        • Jay, I completely agree with your remarks here. I too have felt for a long time that Bollywood underperforms on 99% of its biggest grossers. Barring Aamir of course and he too often does genres where despite the extraordinary grosses can’t be maximized in an absolute sense because they’re not grand scale masala. In other words if a Thugs… were liked as much as Dangal it would do a lot more. As an aside this makes the comparisons people draw with Salman absurd as well. Because he does proper masala most of the time. It’s just not very good. Otherwise films like PK or Dangal are hardly the biggest genres around. And yes Baahubali is an exception. But an exception that proves something. You don’t have to get this kind of gross every day. Just as no one expected Sholay every day. But 350 crores should be possible routinely on marquee projects with major stars. In the South for a long time the biggest Tamil-Telugu grossers have actually outpaced Hindi in a proportionate sense. Bollywood just writes off a large part of its audience on most days. Baahubali is a stunning box office event no matter which way one looks at it. The whole ‘there’s nothing to see here’ approach ‘because it’s an exception’ is rather bizarre. Using that logic there’s nothing to see with Star Wars or Avatar or Jurassic Park or whatever either! Once again Dangal maximizes the audience for that genre but a Sultan if done well would do a lot more. A grand spectacle (assuming it’s that) like Thugs would do even more. Much as D3 could have done 400 had it been liked as much as D2 (surely not a high bar). and this isn’t about one star or the other, it’s about all stars. Barring Aamir. Incidentally I believe Ghajini releasing today would probably do 400.

Anyways, according to Rajamouli he had already had discussions with Aamir about a Mahabharata trilogy in future, and during Dangal promotions Aamir himself expressed his desire to work with Rajamouli. So you never know.

It is like once in a lifetime thing. It may even lead to shoddy imitations. • I’ll be pretty blunt. In general excluding a few exceptions, Bollywood is simply underperforming across India. Use any metric – collections, footfalls, footfalls as % of population etc. The whole model is messed up. If the focus was ala Baahbulli to spend time, effort, creativity, talent etc. film content and film business potential is incredible. The talent you mentioned are doing the best of a bad era simply. It’s years of corrosion. To add another angle, it’s an industry out to please populations outside of India than its own people. You said why do things to please other people? Bollywood opened up the world markets but whilst doing this either through talent loss or simply a poor era it’s intended domination has been scuppered by a true visionary who seems to have created a post and pre era moment in Indian cinema.

The net for the day in India shows what Bollywood can and should be doing.

  52. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Sets ALL TIME RECORD
    Saturday 29 April 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has set an ALL TIME RECORD with collections set to come in at over 40 crore nett apprx. The film is set to go past the present first day record of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which collected 39.32 crore nett. That record was set on the biggest day of the year for box office collections which is the Diwali holiday. Here it was a normal working day. The film will also be the first film to cross 40 crore nett in Hindi and this is despite limited business in South which would have been worth 7-8 crore nett for this film but that is not there because of Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam versions of the film. Real value collections for the Hindi version are well over 45 crore nett.

The records have come all across the Hindi markets but the insane ones are East Punjab and Delhi city. These are the areas where South Indian dubbed films and films with no face value find it the toughest but East Punjab is 4.60 crore nett apprx (beating previous record of Sultan by around 60 lakhs nett) and Delhi city is close to 4 crore nett, also beating Sultan by around 40 lakhs nett. When this film is doing such numbers in these markets then there is no limit to what the film can achieve. Records have also fallen in all other circuits in the Hindi markets and a small territory like Odisha has recorded astounding figures.

The all India total of all versions may well be heading for 125 crore nett apprx and that will be updated later as figures from South markets come in.

No way can Day 1 nett in Hindi market be 40 cr when Telugu itself is topping 40 Cr and the WOM of Baahubali is at par with Dangal which was also extraordinary.
My expectation was closer to 45 cr because from Bihar to Gujrat this movie is sold out across all screens at an inflated tickets rate.
Saturday is likely to see closer to 50 cr and Sunday will cross 50 cr.

Only such movies can carry such reach. If in future a Hindi movie is made on Mahabharata or something similar then only we can think of such a feat. Though there is no doubt hindi movies are underachieving the target for them cannot be 125 crs. It still can be only what the Hindi version of bahubali achieves. Even rajnis movies don’t take such start so this is unique even for South Indian cinema…

      • Unfortunately I don’t believe only a mainstream religious mythological fantasy film is the answer. The 70’s had Sholay. The concept needs uniqueness, the flavour rooted. Personally something like Lagaan but shorter would work wonders today.

That fake trailer of Thugs was quite compelling. But I don’t trust YRF or the director to do any justice in bringing together Bachchan and Aamir.

Before Hindi cinema can achieve these feats let them first crack the Aamir code, Baahulbali is another level – more like 2-3 levels up at a box office level. It is process not something done overnight.

The fear would be as Sanjana says a mimicking industry trying to compete rather than create. I can just see YRF and others thinking in their board rooms – let’s make a mythological fantasy film. Easier said than done. This film is either good or bad for Hindi. It’s good if they learn how this happened and why. It’s bad if they just try to replicate and copy as they have done for years.

Baahbulli is like a drug. The makers were smart to leave a two part film with a compelling cliffhanger. That structure is unique and has fed into the box office numbers. Dhoom doesn’t work like this, the franchise format is too static. You get good or bad films. Godfather, LOTR, Harry potter etc have a continuous storyline and this format boosts appeal and leaves audience’s waiting for more.

Ra.One was a chance. SRK took a risk but failed. Something unique like this IMO.

Unfortunately the west have made a better of fist of tapping into this whether the presentation is phony or whatever in a film like Slumdog Millionaire and films based in India like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I don’t even think it’s budget. It’s more in relation to tapping into the culture and DNA of the Indian population. This division in population is obviously a barrier. It’s too simplistic to use that as the excuse when previous eras in Hindi cinema had pan India appeal.

Just call a spade a spade. India with its size and love for films is not at the forefront of cinema globally nor does it need to be. But it should be the King in its home turf at least. Hindi being the language most widely spoken should be miles ahead at an all India level.

This is true and to overcome this a collaboration of sorts can be done like its happening with 2.0. As we saw with Robo, 2.0 had no chance in Bollywood but with Akki in it, equations change. Vikram was almost confirmed for this project and his presence with Rajini would have generated much more hysteria in South but he was not taken as his presence adds nothing to Bollywood dub.

Similar approach can be adapted, various young current generation stars from South can be mixed with Hindi counterparts to make something substantially exciting and big screen watch with an India appealing content. The problem again is there is no director capable of doing that in Bollywood right now.

However, not many know that a lot of members of the Rajamouli’s extended family was involved with this project, thus truly making it a family affair. Starting off with the script, it was penned by the ace directorโ€™s father Vijayendra Prasad. Rajamouliโ€™s wife Rama shouldered the responsibility of designing costumes for the film while son SS Karthikeya stepped in as a Second Unit Director and daughter Mayuka featured in the film’s song โ€˜Saahore Baahubaliโ€™.

That’s not all, Music Composer MM Keeravani, also happens to be Rajamouliโ€™s cousin and the lyricists are his uncles K Shiva Shakti Datta and K Ramakrishna. Kalyani Malik, the Sound Recording Artist is also a cousin to the filmmaker. Malikโ€™s son Mayur too lent his voice in some parts of the movie. Keeravaniโ€™s wife Sree Valli, on the other hand, became the Line Producer and his sons Kaala Bhairava and Sri Simha took on the duties of Singer and Assistant Music Director respectively. The collections make Hindi film collections look miniscule.

  73. V glad at the stupendous opening figures of Baahubali 2.

Watched it yesterday and found it good. It lives up to the high expectations and delivers, which i think is a big deal. I didnt like the last half hour or so, where there is only action and not much narrative. But that is a minor complain.

I think this will have strong legs. Not sure if it can challenge Dangal’s total with its Hindi version, but it can do 300 cr with Hindi version alone. WW 1000 cr should be a cakewalk.

  74. Watched Baahubali 2. Won’t add story in detail but this is another perfect entertainer from SS Rajamouli. Everyone are busy doing the comparisons between part 1 and 2 but for me I can’t compare them, its not a sequel, its the same movie with same story with more answers, its like the movie with 2 year intermission break. I find both of them on equal level which is just about fantastic and flawless. While the 1st part just blows you away with the sequences and imagination/vision and you expect that in 2nd part but still it again stands on that huge expectations and delivers that and extra dramatic scenes and comes out a huge winner. The only minor flaws I found is common in both movies which is the romantic portions takes too much time and SSR is not swift in handling those as he’s with the dramatic portions. But once he’s done with the romantic portion, he’s in top gear and the dramatic portions are so out of the world and involve you as an audience you have nothing else but to submit yourself to SSR’s vision. This is mega achievement where he literally made everyone come out and watch his movie and pay high ticket prices( paid $35 here). This will probably blow every record out there and I won’t be surprised if it will even be the highest grossing Hindi movie (just need to see how folks in North India takes on). Secondly even if it does 300 crs its as good as 400 crs as almost whole of South India has regional releases and they prefer that (unlike pure Hindi film which they will still watch as thats the only option, so 25% audience lost over there). Performances wise I think Ramyakrishna as Sivagami is fantastic and her role goes beyond the 1st part and then Anushka was great from the looks to acting and (feminist) characterization. Prabhas(huge dedication to the character) and Rana(perfect evil counterpart with little gore this time around) were both awesome as usual. Special mention for the action sequences from Prabhas which we just overlook but its damn difficult to look so great everytime and build a physique matching the world presented in the movie. Tamannah had guest role of 1-2 scenes. Good part that songs were less and not required to the script. Background score is similar to 1st part and still fantastic by MM Kreem.

Overall this is probably movie sin if you miss watching it on big screen. Hugely Recommended!!

    • Thank you! Least others are thinking similarly!

      • They are most probably not. Most of Bollywood’s directors and producers are happy going for projects that appeal to the multiplexes of a couple of metros. They want to reach to a limited audience that can afford to pay a premium price for the tickets at those high end multiplexes, make some quick bucks and move on to the next project.

Forget Pan-India appeal, most of them don’t even have the creativity or vision to make a project that will appeal to the northern territories universally.

And then as we said earlier here, it’s not only about the budget. Baahubali- The Beginning cost as much as Ra1 had cost around 5-6 years back. There probably are very few directors in Bollywood with that kind of vision or creativity right now.

Baahubali- The Beginning released and however much it impressed everyone, you can see nothing remotely like it has been even announced. It’s been 2 years since.

The outcome will most probably be like Jungle Book. It has beaten most Bollywood movies. It is looked like the exception to the norm and most producers/directors have gone back to projects that appeal to a few multiplexes.

        Like

        • This time they are bound to take notice. Last time Baahubali 1 started small (5 cr) and became a sleeper Superhit. This time the Hindi version itself is breaking and setting records.

Next year 2.0 will also be another onslaught. Shankar is also a massy director like Rajamouli who understands the pulse of the Indian audience. With Akshay in it, 2.0 will also have the advantage of having a known face for the Hindi belt. If any movie is going to come close to Baahuali’s all version business in near future, its going o be 2.0 for sure.

The problem with Bollywood directors is not that they dont want to go big and grand. The problem is not even budget (Ra. One and Dhoom 3 budgets had massive budgets in their time). The problem is lack of creativity, innovation and vision. Without these qualities, our present crop can only smell the coffee, but cant change themselves. So bring on Tubelight, Golmaal Again and TZH!

  76. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Sets Record On Day Two As Well

    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali – The Conclusion held on extremely well on its second day as it collected around the 40 crore nett region again after a 40.75 crore nett day one. After such an extraordinary opening you would expect a drop but there is hardly any drop. The records continue to fall as after an all time record day one, it also has an all time record on day two with the highest collections ever on day two for a Hindi language film. The most astounding thing about these collections is not that they are coming on non holidays as Dhoom 3 has set huge records on non holidays but that they are coming with 12-15% of the market are missing.

This is because there are limited shows of the Hindi version in Nizam /Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. Real value of these collections are in excess of 45 crore nett. The business of Bahubali – The Conclusion over the first two days is as follows.

    Friday – 40,75,00,000

    Saturday – 40,00,00,000 apprx

    Total – 80,75,00,000 apprx

Bahubali – The Conclusion has seen a drop in collections in its South Indian language versions especially the Telugu one but that is how box office works there and it is a regular thing. The all India figures will be updated later.

Salman dominance still exists. But after this event everything will be compared to Baahulbali – one can try and isolate Hindi films, all fine but the real potential of content driven pan Indian collections cannot be denied.

We’ll carry on comparing Tubelight, TZH etc to Dangal and forget the mythological elephant in the room.

That guy wants to make films for masses but struggles to come up with films that are liked by that sector. Dhoom 3 is easily the least liked of all Dhoom films, although it is the biggest blockbuster in the franchise. So not having much expectations from Thugs, apart from some box office glory.

        • Once a month is not possible. But even Hollywood has such a vast range of films and it’s population is a quarter of India. The budget / technology is such a false decoy. India is rich just like Chinese. India should be at a minimum the third biggest market for films. It’s economy isn’t but the love of films surely makes up for it.

There are too many excuses for too many years. I sincerely hope that Baahulbali changes something. Smart people in Hindi cinema like Hirani & Aamir shall take note. Heck even SRK. Someone will eventually!

The outlawed outfit has used violence to alienate villagers from the security forces

On April 24, a nondescript vehicle dropped off a group of women in Burkapal, a village of 650 mostly tribal inhabitants in Sukma district of south Chhattisgarh.

There was nothing remarkable about them: they were dressed like any of the women in the remote villages.

And the team from the Central Reserve Police Forceโ€™s 74th battalion, who were guarding the construction site of a bridge that is part of a road project near Burkapal, thought nothing of them.

What the CRPF men didnโ€™t, or couldnโ€™t, see was that the village was already emptied of all residents: no one was in the village.

They were to pay a heavy price for this oversight. Just before 1.00 p.m., the 72 jawans set off back to their base.

The threat worked: the villagers had begun to limit their interaction with the jawans. And now, after the April 24 attack, itโ€™s practically ended. โ€œI donโ€™t understand whom we are protecting here,โ€ a jawan says. โ€œThis bloody road? These roads are being built with our blood.โ€

Bahubali – The Conclusion continued to wreck havoc across India as it had another 100 crore nett day after a huge 122 crore nett on day one. The Hindi version had hardly any drop and the main drop came from Nizam / andhra which was expected and now the film will settle in that state after an humungous first day. The total of the film stands at 222 crore nett after two days and it has become the highest grossing film in India in just two days beating Raees (129 crore nett)), Khaidi No.150 (120 crore nett)) and Badrinath Ki Dulhaia (114 crore nett). The collections of Baahubali – The Conclusion are almost double of these films. The business of Bahubali – The Conclusion (All Langs) over the first two days is as follows.

I have never witnessed such whistles, crowd cheering, in my life. The kids and elders all seems to be enjoying it. The way it us connecting to crowd, is unmatched.

Can’t wait for second half. But this is epic at its best. The Hindi audience are so excited for this one, can be feel best by, audience knowing the name of prabhas, rana, etc. Unbelievable.

I may add, I doubt even sholay, or other great hindi movies would have had such connect pan India and South. Who knows, may be someone from that time. But I doubt any movie ever in history seems to have connected like this.

    • For me, the last event before the interval was the most adrenaline inducing of the movie. It basically sets up the raison d’etre for the central plot. That frozen shot at Intermission brilliantly conveys all the sibling rivalry.
By then, people were just awestruck by everything that Rajmoulli had thrown at them. It will take at least another viewing to appreciate each and every scene of this masterpiece. However, as a caveat, I would add that I felt the BGM of the last 15 minutes too loud. That was my only complaint while leaving the theatre.
Some reviewers have complained about the extra creative action in the end. I wonder what they think of all the extra creativity in Hwood superhero franchises. Too selective when it comes to desi masala.

I am at loss of words to describe the experience. With respect to other movies, this movie is indeed an event movie. I and my wife were thinking of skipping it for one day today because I was tired with work, etc. And i thought i shall fall asleep, but can’t believe I was not only awake but cheering!! And now writing this comment.

I am sure one may have some minor grievances but this is cinema at its best. At least in Indian terms. A gentle request to everyone kindly watch it in big screen.

I felt ending could have been bit more interesting, but after two movies there is bound to be over expectation!! Yet can’t doubt the director for ending sequence.

For me the best part was the flashback. In both the movies.

The strong feminine character is a far cry from normal hindi cinema. Also top supporting cast, like I doubt we had a memorable supporting actors and characters as famous as this since sholay!! Kattapa is a legend now!

The imagination and execution is amazing. Contrary to many i loved the first half with humour and drama at the end of first half as rightly pointed by nykavi.

Guys everyone take your family and experience this movie, you won’t regret it.

The audiences were cheering in the climax and that’s when even you realise the power of cinema.

Amid all the praise and applause, Rana Daggubati, who has portrayed Bhallaladeva in the film, has made a shocking revelation. In a recent interview, the actor said, “I am blind from my right eye. I see only from my left eye. The one you see is someone else’s eye which was donated to me after his death. If I close my left eye, I can see no one.”

  90. The beauty of this movie is when ever you felt that your attention is taken away, you are hit with 1000 tonne ice brick scene that will pull you back into the narration. That kind of scenario was seen last in Sholay. That’s why Baahubali 2 is another modern Sholay of our times with technology thrown in the mix. More over 99% of movies made in India for the past 30 to 40 years were stereotypes of boy going after girl, revenge and aping western romcoms. Most of the movies were catering to limited audience. This movie appeals to wide range of audience with varied tastes similar to what Sholay did in 1975. Even Rameh Sippy could not replicate success of Sholay in subsequent movies. Rajamouli too may not replicate Baahubali 2 success. Hence it is once in a lifetime game changing movie. I guess this movie will destroy egos of all Khans, Kumars and Kapoors and their fans. A Telugu dubbed movie with no recognisable stars destroying 20 year efforts of Bollywood Super Stars in 3 days flat is a slap on the face of Bollywood Actors and Directors for their lack of imagination.I guess Bollywood deserved it.This is nasty punch on those pundits and websites too which were giving orgasmic adjectives to all openings of previous movies which look fake now after the Baahubali 2 opening. This is eye opener that a movie with solid story, acting and perfect narration is well received by Indians.

Box Office: Baahubali 2 [Hindi] has an UNPRECEDENTED and UNBELIEVABLE weekend, scores โ€“ Rs. 125 crore
    By Joginder Tuteja
    , May 1, 2017 – 9:39 am IST

Baahubali 2 [Hindi] has done something that no other film has ever done before in the history of Indian cinema. In just its Hindi version, it has accumulated a massive Rs. 125 crore* at the Box Office and that too in just over the weekend. This is truly UPRECEDENTED as numbers like these coming over an entire week too are considered to be quite good, regardless of which language it arrives in and which superstar features in there. However, for a Telugu film to do that (in its Hindi dubbed version) and that too with a male lead [Prabhas] as a central protagonist who hasnโ€™t done a Hindi film before is UNBELIEVABLE indeed.

As a matter of fact, in three days, the film has collected only below the highest grosser film of 2017 so far, Raees [Rs. 137.51 crore]. Those numbers had been accumulated across the lifetime of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, whereas Baahubali 2 has managed to come close to that in just a weekend. Thatโ€™s correct โ€“ ONLY THREE DAYS!

What is happening currently with the SS Rajamouli directed film is something that cannot be explained at all. While it is quite apparent that the entire country is watching only one film at the moment, it is also pretty much visible that external threats like IPL have been vanquished too. There are no excuses whatsoever anymore as Baahubali 2 is making waves without a superstar lead pair, without a superhit song, without a holiday and without any major promotion by those associated with the film. There were no visits to the malls, no multi-city tours, no controversies, no nothing.

All that mattered at the end was the core content and with hype over last two years truly elevating with every passing month, only to reach a crescendo in the current season, it is โ€˜Brand Baahubaliโ€™ which has ultimately emerged victorious.

    BLOCKBUSTER.

    *Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Biz Talk: BAAHUBALI has emerged the biggest brand today. Hail Rajamouli!
    By Taran Adarsh
    , May 1, 2017 – 8:00 am IST

No Republic Dayโ€ฆ No Eidโ€ฆ No Independence Dayโ€ฆ No Diwaliโ€ฆ No Christmasโ€ฆ No mall visitsโ€ฆ No city showsโ€ฆ No appearance on comedy shows on TVโ€ฆ No Khans, no Kapoors, no Roshans, no Kumarsโ€ฆ No item songsโ€ฆ No foreign locationsโ€ฆ

Yet, BAAHUBALI-2 smashes every record in sight and sets new benchmarks at the BO. I have never seen such hype, hysteria and craze for any film ever in my 37-year career as a journalist and I say this because I have been a witness to the Manmohan Desai-Amitabh Bachchan era. I distinctly recall, every Big B-Man ji film *together* was looked forward to with great enthusiasm, but BAAHUBALI-2 is akin to an event, a celebration that has the entire nation participating with great fervour.

Now letโ€™s discuss its performance at the BOโ€ฆ

Everyone was keen to know the answer to the question: Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali? Did the terrific cliffhanger do the trick? Did the tremendous curiosity [to know the answer] translate into an earth-shattering start at the ticket windows? Yes, thatโ€™s one of the key reasons. Also, BAAHUBALI has emerged the biggest brand today and that too translated into a fantabulous start.

However, all hype and no content can prove disastrous for any film. As a matter of fact, aggressive promotions can attract footfalls till the word of mouth comes into play. The moment the verdict is out, the business either skyrockets or plummets on Day 1 itself. The public opinion spreads faster than fire nowadays. More so because social media is an extension of our lives. It can make or break a film within hours.

The stupendous business across the weekend โ€” from East to West and from North to South โ€” clearly indicates that BAAHUBALI-2 is here to stay, enjoy a glorious innings at theatres and set new benchmarks. What will be its eventual lifetime business? Thatโ€™s a bit difficult to guess at this stage, but one thing is for sure, this oneโ€™s a game changer. It will be difficult to surpass its business soon.

Before I conclude this piece, Iโ€™d like to doff my hat to S.S. Rajamouli, the creator of the BAAHUBALI franchise. Like I stated in my review: โ€œIt requires foresight, guts, vision and of course, the financial muscle to bring to life a lavish spectacle on the giant screen. And Rajamouli uses his strengths and opportunities to accomplish what a majority of storytellers can only talk about or dream of.โ€

The only regret is, BAAHUBALI-2 is the conclusion of this epic saga. I genuinely wish this series never terminates. You donโ€™t want this joyride to end everโ€ฆ yeh dil maange more!

Last week some pundits in India were speculating Baahubali 2 could become the first Indian film in history to amass 1,000 crore ($150.3 million) gross worldwide. That would eclipse the record held by P.K, director Rajkumar Hiraniโ€™s 2014 sci-fi comedy starring Aamir Khan, which collected 792 crore ($119 million).

If that seemed fanciful then, it doesnโ€™t now. The epic is on track to rack up upwards of 300 crore ($45 million) net in India over three days after earning 220 crore ($33.2 million) on Friday and Saturday, including 80.50 crore ($12.1 million) in the Hindi markets.

So the sequel will easily surpass the 510 crore ($76.6 million) lifetime total of Baahubali: The Beginning and Dangalโ€™s 540 crore ($81.1 million).

In a couple of days, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif will fly to Abu Dhabi to kick off the shoot of their reunion movie, ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’. The Ali Abbas Zafar film will have its longest shooting stint in the Emirates – 65 days – for which a lavish set is being erected. What’s interesting is that the Bollywood unit is putting it together with help from the design crew of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (2015).

Construction of a 20,000-square metre back lot has already begun and over 150 workers are deployed on site to create the film’s main shooting area. The team will film at several other locations across the UAE capital before moving to the primary set, we hear.

Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Smashes All Box Office Records

Bahubali – The Conclusion (Hindi) has created history by collecting more than 125 crore nett over its first weekend in its Hindi format. It is a dubbed film but has beaten every film by leaps and bounds with the previous high being Sultan at a little over 105 crore nett. The first day was the highest opening day of all time and the third day was the highest day ever recorded by a film in Hindi format. Not only that the business is coming with just a limited release in the South so real value of the film is another 15 crore nett which is 142 crore nett. The Sunday in real value is a 50 crore nett plus day if it was an outright Hindi film getting this sort of appreciattion. The business of Bahubali – The Conclusion (Hindi) over the first weekend is as follows.

    Friday – 40,75,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 40,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 46,00,00,000 apprx

    Total – 1,27,00,00,000 apprx

Bahubali – The Conclusion across India has grossed around 300 crore nett apprx. The Saturday collections were not 100 crore nett as published yesterday as they included gross figures from some circuits in South.

Bahubali – The Conclusion has grossed an unimaginable Worldwide number in excess 500 crore in all languages in just three days. The India gross business is 395 crore apprx while Overseas is over $18-19 million (3 days only, not including previews). The Overseas figures are conservative estimates as the Telugu and Tamil versions are playing on hire at many places at double or treble the normal ticket rates and this is not reported. The business in US / Cananda, Gulf and Australia has smashed all records. If we include the hire centres US / Canada will be around $11 million which is almost the lifetime in Dangal in just three days. In UK, the Telugu version are hardly being screened on the main chains so its all unreported business. In Australia the film has grossed A$2.23 million with Telugu (875k) Hindi (840k) and Tamil (515k). The lifetime record holder Dangal is at $2.63m which will be beaten in a day or two. The apprx figures of Bahubali – The Conclusion (all langs) Worldwide is as follows

    INDIA NETT – 300 crore

    INDIA GROSS – 385 crore

    OVERSEAS ($) – $18,500,000

    OVERSEAS (INR) – 121 crore

    WORLDWIDE TOTAL – 506 crore

These are crazy figures and it may well be possible that the film will be the highest grossing Indian film Worldwide in just seven days.

Note – The figures are for the three day weekend and do not include previews, including them the total goes above 520 crore.

    Sakshma Srivastav | May 1, 2017, 01.25 PM IST

Raveena Tandon’s thriller ‘Maatr’ recently hit the theatres. Written by Michael Pellico and directed by Ashtar Sayed, the film revolved around a mother who set out on a killing spree in an attempt to avenge her daughter’s rape and murder.

And now, a source close to Sridevi’s upcoming film ‘Mom’ has revealed that the film shares a plot which is quite similar to that of Raveena’s ‘Maatr’. “In the first-half of Mom, Sridevi’s daughter, played by Pakistani actress Sajal Ali, is victimised. In the second-half, her mother played by Sridevi does a vigilante act to get even with her daughter’s wrongdoers. This is exactly the format that we saw in ‘Maatr’ recently,” revealed the source.

However, the makers of ‘Mom’ are not worried about ‘Maatr’ stealing their thunder. “They are confident of Sridevi’s magic. She has not been seen on screen for a long time and her fans have been waiting patiently since ‘English Vinglish’,” said the source before signing off.

Phenomenal Monday – Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Is ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) is set to achieve its biggest feat till yet on Monday. There are no words to describe what is happening in the Hindi markets on Monday. It is certain already that it will be the highest Monday off all time with collections surpassing 30 crore nett but the big question is by how far it will surpass that figure. What has gone on so far on Monday suggests it may even challenge its Friday number but surely the evening and night shows can’t do what they did on Friday as it is a working day tomorrow. It is a partial holiday for Labour Day today but that should hardly be making the film put up this sort of record Monday.

The film is an ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER and its probably the first time that a film has got the highest classification in less than four days. The collections in North (Delhi city and Punjab) are so phenomenal on Monday that it is hard to think that other areas like Mumbai and Central will stop this film becoming the highest grossing film in Hindi of all time. If it was going to be let down it was going to be Delhi city and Punjab due to the South factor. Dangal in Hindi grossed 374 crore nett and its looking very much that this total is going to be chased down and maybe even go over 400 crore nett.

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has set an opening day record, opening weekend record, is certain to set a week record and almost certain to set a lifetime record. Now the wait is where Monday will land, at little above 30 crore nett or the unthinkable and around 40 crore nett. It will be known in a few hours from now.

A similar report was written for 3 Idiots too. The film is dismissing everything – star power, holidays etc. I think this is the biggest number yet and opens up the chances of 10 days straight of 25+ CR (reserved for TZH) or 30+ CR. It is by BOI stupid standards an ATBB. It’s going to at minimum do thrice Dangal pan India. 3 Idiots did 85% more than Ghajini. This is a different universe.

All those saying we shouldn’t dismiss or challenge or change Hindi films, the audience is giving you the answer. If Tubelight released on coming Friday it’d be destroyed too, but it’s another industry that has delivered the goods. Least it’s Indian and not Hollywood as Jungle Book / superhero / Fast films was anโ€‹ indicator that Hindi cinema may succumb further to westerns cinema.

The star system is valuable but in reference with 70’s it can’t be the only thing to rely on. You absolutely need great writers, creative inspiration, rooted cinema etc. Aamir / Hirani and others tried for many years but it’s clear India has a cultural division in cinema. A film is finally doing something which I always thought was possible. Something I thought only a select couple in Hindi cinema capable of.

This is frankly what is possible. I’m not at all disappointed Aamir didn’t do it. I’m glad someone has and if KJo did whatever he did with sincerity than good for him.

          Like

        • But this isn’t the Jai Santoshi Maa model. That was a film that came out of nowhere and became huge. By definition that sort of thing isn’t repeatable. Baahubali on the other hand was made by one of the most successful directors in the country who already had a lot of success behind him. Of course Baahubali as a phenomenon isn’t easy to replicate but this was a film designed to be that kind of blockbuster. It’s the Sholay model not the jai Santoshi Maa one. Again Sholay is not more replicable than Jai Santoshi Maa, I’d agree, but you don’t need to get to Sholay every time. You can get lots of megahits, historic hits (of the sort that followed Sholay) at some lesser level. The point here is that the market exists. What would happen if Baahubali were made with Bombay stars? What would the Hindi gross look like? The point is that the Bollywood market has been undersold for decades. It’s been better since the rise of the new masala but that’s still not enough because most of the films are terrible that fizzle out after huge initials. As I said the other day a masala film liked as much as 3I or even PK or Dangal would do a lot more than those films. So it’s not about attempting Baahubali but just trying to make masala with a strong script. So the possibility is there. Will it ever happen? Probably not. Because the Bollywood directors simply don’t have the kind of rootedness (in terms of life experience) to even dream of something like this. When they do they’re just trying to remake Marvel or LOTR or whatever. Rajamouli takes many of those cues as well but uses these to serve very Indian ends. And some of the more rooted directors (at least at the smaller end) don’t quite have the grand imagination to pull this off. So I do agree with you but not for the Jai Santoshi Maa reason.

Finally I’d add that in a way no extraordinary success is truly replicable except on the exceptional day. So Hollywood has huge hits but how many trend like Titanic or get to that gross (before inflation/IMAX/3D setting in)? Or Avatar? Even with Star Wars it takes this ‘biggest’ franchise combined with a truly liked film. But that still isn’t the Cameron kind of achievement because he wasn’t relying on a franchise. But this doesn’t mean lots of success isn’t possible at a lesser level. Bollywood doesn’t do this. The non-Aamir films are by and large terrible on trending. And then everyone pretends it isn’t possible and all the bull one has heard for years and will hear again after Baahubali!

It’s all bull. In space of 4 months Dangal baffled people AFTER Sultan and during DEMO. Now Bahubali is destroying Dangal (and everything else beneath it) without a ‘superstar’, without a major holiday. The first part was already a rage.

Secondly to confirm Satyam’s point no one expects a HAHK or BAHUBALI every month, once a year or every other year maybe but in between a collection of successful films is not much to ask for? Beloved BOI says it always only 5% of films are safe!

And this is not a fluke like it seems you are suggesting. It is a film model not used much in Indian cinema. A part 1, part 2 hook. First part already was monstrous, second is just coincidence? Or a smart director wielding magic once again?

Clearly a near 2 year intermission is probably going to end up half a year’s total Hindi cinemas theatrical earnings! This will probably create more famine then feast at first as you need to grow some crops first before feeding & one expects the usual from our big walleted Bollywood producers to throw money for a little while. But India is full of smart intellects, one day they’ll have a light bulb moment and move to greater feats collectively or maybe only Bahubali is possible and nothing else.

My quite hasty prediction is someone will get it right again within 1 or 2 years. Whether the project is live or not is inconsequential. But really think some big quality films will arrive – maybe not at this level. But because it’s clear the opportunity is there someone will pounce.

Post Baahubali 2 saga, Padmavati gets budget revision; increases from 160 to 200 crores

Till a few years ago, S S Rajamouli described himself as a fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This was before Baahubali. Now post the triumphant victory of this, the mother of all costume dramas, Rajamouli is regarded as the biggest threat to Bhansaliโ€™s supremacy as the raconteur of flamboyant period dramas.

That the war sequences of Baahubali are largely inspired by Bhansaliโ€™s Bajirao Mastani is a well-known fact acknowledged even by Rajamouli himself. Prior to that when Bhansaliโ€™s Goliyon Ki Raaslila Ram Leela was to be released Rajamouli couldnโ€™t help sighing and exulting over the trailer taking to Twitter to marvel over Bhansaliโ€™s spectacle.

But it now seems like the self-proclaimed fan is now determined to race ahead of his mentor. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which has opened to record-breaking collections seems all set to be the most successful epic saga of all times. The only competition it has this year is Sanjay Leela Bhansaliโ€™s historical-costume drama Padmavati which opens in November.

Viacom 18 the producers of Padmavati are going all-out to ensure the film conveys all the epic grandiosity and maganum opus-ness associated with a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, plus some more. Apparently the filmโ€™s original budget of Rs 160 crores has been upped. Padmavati may turn to be Indiaโ€™s first Rs. 200-crore budgeted production.

Says a source close to Padmavati, โ€œBaahubali is the new benchmark for epic grandeur. The Padmavati team is all set to amplify the grandiosity to a level where audiences would not miss the Baahubali experience.โ€

Quite an achievement given the first part released 6 months before Bajirao! This is a such a ridiculous piece. Whatever admiration Rajamouli might have expressed the idea that the Baahubali director is taking cues from Bajirao is truly silly.

FF8 was decent. Having not watched each one there was a backstory that I hadn’t watched but as the series is not too high on intelligence it was easy to piece together. One very good car sequence in middle of film where a bunch of cars are aimed nuclear type for a target is really good. Ending as usual twisty and turny literally. Charlize Theron hot as a villain. A cute baby in a fight sequence.

If a fan of the series worth a watch. I went to avoid other things so worth it.

On the ticket prices at my end as I’ve now learnt the Hindi ranges between 15-18 depending on where you watch it while the Telugu/Tamil versions are between 23-26 (over the weekend they went up to 30). I will be watching the Telugu. Munna I think said earlier that at his end even the Hindi was 23 or something. The one thing though is that whether 15 or 23 the matinee show prices are the very same. This is usually not the case.

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has continued its record smashing run with Monday business which has surpassed all it has done over the weekend in terms of records. The collections are set to be around 36-37 crore nett and if we take the 37 crore nett figure then outside Bahubali 2 (Hindi) then only one film has grossed more than this on its first day. That film was Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in 2015 which grossed a little over 39 crore nett and here it is the first Monday. The film is on an unbelievable run. It was a partial holiday which would have helped a little but not to the extent that it smashes the records of all films bar one.

The total business of the film is now around 164 crore nett and the business tomorrow will give a better idea of the first week business as Monday was a partial holiday so the Tuesday drop will be more than normal (or should be more than normal as with this film you nver know considering what has happened over the past four days).

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) is at record levels in every Hindi circuit where it was full release and the way it is going it has a very good chance of becoming the highest Hindi language grosser and maybe among the Top Hindi films (adjusted) of all time despite it being a dubbed film.

    Salman Khan starrer Tubelight

China is all set for the hugest Bollywood release ever. Sources say Kabir Khanโ€™s Salman Khan starrer Tubelight is all set to have the biggest ever release of any Indian film in China.

Apparently the previous Kabir Khan-Salman Khan collaboration Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a massive hit in China. Tubelight has a direct Chinese link. It is set during the Indo-China war of 1962 and features Chinaโ€™s leading lady Zhu Zhu opposite Salman. Keeping that in mind Salman Khan Productions has taken a call to promote Tubelight in a big way in China.

Salman is expected to tour key Chinese cities to promote the film. Kabir Khan concedes there are big plans for Tubelight in China, though he isnโ€™t willing to reveal what those plans are. โ€œChina is a huge market. The number of theatres in the country are staggering. Plus, Tubelight does have a Chinese connection including its leading lady. So yes, we are looking at the various possibilities of how to give the film a big release in China.โ€

Bollywood biggies – Akshay Kumar’s Toilet – Ek Prem Katha and Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s untitled film are already clashing on 11th August
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    May 2, 2017

Superstar Mahesh Babuโ€™s upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual action-thriller โ€œSPYderโ€œ, being directed by A.R. Murugadoss, will now hit the screens on August 11 instead of June 23, a source in the know has said.

โ€œOriginally, the film was slated for release on June 23. Since the shoot will go on till May end, itโ€™s very unlikely for the film to come out in June. Hence, the makers are planning to release it on August 11,โ€ the source from the filmโ€™s unit told IANS.

The plus point is that now it will not clash with Salman Khanโ€™s highly anticipated film Tubelight. Though it wouldnโ€™t have been a proper clash since both films belong to different industries, but somehow it would have affected the business of both the films.

Interestingly, two of Bollywood biggies โ€“ Akshay Kumarโ€™s Toilet โ€“ Ek Prem Katha and Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharmaโ€™s untitled film are already clashing on 11th August and this is the third addition.

The film is reportedly being made with a whopping budget of Rs 110 crores and rumour has it that it might be releasing in Hindi too! Rakul Preet Singh will be playing the lead antagonist in the movie.

In the film, Mahesh plays an intelligence bureau officer and he is paired with Rakul Preet Singh. The project marks the first-time collaboration of Mahesh and Murugadoss.

Actor-filmmaker S.J. Suryah is being introduced in the role of an antagonist. Being produced by Tagore Madhu, the film has music by Harris Jayaraj.

The first look of the film was released on 12 April 2017 and it has been quite impressive. This film marks Mahesh Babuโ€™s Tamil debut.

The film is predominantly shot in Hyderabad and Mumbai, there are reports that they have shot a couple of songs abroad.

I don’t think another film maker will right away announce another Mahabharat now. Also, the movie is not regular Mahabharat but from the point of view of Bheema and that may limit the scope to present a true Mahabharat epic instead of someone’s point of view, should have been just director’s pov.

Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaia said price cap applicable for all language movies.
A day after Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah reportedly spent over 1,000 rupees on Baahubali-2 tickets at Bengaluru’s upscale mall, his government passed order capping cinema ticket prices at Rs. 200 in single screens and multiplexes in the state.

The capping of movie ticket prices was announced in the budget and will not be applicable to ‘Gold class’, IMAX and similar categories; and the cap is also applicable for all language movies.

“Price cap applicable for all language movies. This is in line with our commitment of making cinema affordable to all,” tweeted Chief Minister Siddaramiah on Tuesday.

The state government had flirted with a similar idea last year but had dropped later, but this year, ahead of the budget, it received massive push from Kannada film industry and Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy. Single screen owners and multiplexes chose not to reply till receiving official communication.

Movie buffs, who had spent anywhere between Rs. 400- Rs. 1,100 per ticket to watch ‘Baahubali 2′ were disappointed that the rule wasn’t implemented earlier. “We spent few thousand rupees to get tickets for our family to watch Baahubali-2, they could have implemented last week, but a good move’, said Karthik N.

Bahubali – The Conclusion (Hindi) had another huge hold on Tuesday as it grossed in the 30 crore nett range. The drop is 25% from the previous day but that is because it came off weekend ticket rates and it was a partial holiday on Monday. The drop was more in metro multiplexes while other places were unbelievably steady. It was a normal Tuesday and it picked up around 30 crore nett which is less than what most big films pick up on day one if it is not a holiday.๏ฟฝ The collections so far are around 197.50 crore nett and the film is probably looking to finish the week at around 245 crore nett. This is a limited South release so fair value of a 245 crore week is more like 270 crore. There has not been such a universal blockbuster in the Hindi markets since Gadar Ek Prem Katha in 2001. The business of Bahubali – The Conclusion (Hindi) till date is as follows.

    ;
    ๏ฟฝ

    Friday – 40,75,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 40,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 46,50,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 40,00,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday 30,00,00,000 apprx

    Total – 1,97,50,00,000 apprx

Bahubali – The Conclusion (Hindi) is easily going to cross the business of Dangal at 374 crore nett and now it remains to be seen where it finishes up importantly where the footfalls land, can it go over 4 crore footfalls or even get 5 crore which will show that what used to happen is still possible with Hindi cinema and without major holidays.

Unfortunately it’s a moot point. How can we determine the position? What total will Tubelight be chasing? The only fix and the appropriate one is to report pan India grosses only. This splitting of languages is daft. Immediate logic is nothing can be compared but the facts are the business is earned in India whatever language.

If that was how business was reported be assured filmmakers will make more pan appealing films.

Dangal’s records will fall and by some margins. Hindi filmmakers will absolutely look at their projects and adjust at some point. It’s a classic business model. What was deemed an inferior product (in this case an industry) has conquered. Those conquered will feel the need to chase an unlikely winner. We see this in banking or supermarket price wars. I wouldn’t underestimate the potential pull of Hindi cinema. But it does need to ponder, reflect etc.

Heck even BOI has done a 360 with language like – this is possible. They love stars and holidays. They pan small films and limited reporting on South films. They are now having to do the necessary on a historic moment.

I agree. I think I had week 1 around 250 CR and week 2 150 CR yesterday. If that happens then 500 CR is in reach. This is happening in IPL season. A period when people were scared to release films. These people just know they need holidays to make films safe. Bahubali team knew their product well. If you know you’re on a good one you’ll make money and get love period. This is an art. Some artists didn’t know how to sell their work (van Gogh for example) but if you’re confident and KNOW you are good there is less risk. Hindi cinema jumped foreign – one would have thought at turn of century 3 events could have registered. DCH was the wrong event and too many filmmakers chase this glory. But 1) Hrithik arrived, something for Hindi audience to pounce on 2) Gadar a good old fashioned partition film, India to the core 3) Lagaan – the marriage of cinema and cricket with all the colour, subtle grandness etc. Between then and now a lot of filmmakers just copied the DCH model (making NRI films this limiting India appeal) or copied films (be it the Dhoom, nothing more than Fast & Furious, South films etc.) or threw money at foreign corporations to solve the riddle (how can an outsider ‘know’ your own culture – that DNA is in your own blood) or wasted money on big projects (countless examples). Very few come out smiling. In that 15 year Aamir and Salman were down first and now the industry relies on just these 2 to deliver 300 CR blockbusters. No one else is even close! They + Akshay now people get a sense of at least a decent film. Heck even Salman is in the bracket of decent films! This is a guy who can barely act, who’s 90s feats were to wait to see how long before we see his bare chest!

YRF were prestigious as they spaced out releases. Now just a big factory. Dharma is everywhere, even in the South. Really the industry pins hopes on Aamir, Salman, a few Akshay films (hit or miss but more rewarding in recent times), hot openers from SRK and Hirani. Apart from this it’s a graveyard.

When I stepped out of the theatre on Friday, I had expected 450crs in Hindi, and stated as much in my comment up above in this thread. I had felt that tremendous connect through content and context, in fact something I had felt with Gadar as well.
And BOI is right: there has not been a pan-universal audience-connect movie since Gadar. If this does 450+, so soon after Dangal, it merely confirms that the Aamir successes (3I,Pk,Dangal) obviously did not max out the audience.

3I if released today would have done 500 cr imo. But yes, agree that PK and Dangal did not max out the audience due to their genre restrictions.

Baahubali 2 is pure masala genre with VFX and on an epic scale – this genre is more likely to max out the audience. Moreover, it has broken the north-south divide, which is another big achievement.

Don’t think that’s right. 3I did max out and did phenomenal and even Dangal max out its audience to the type of film it and added beyond. I feel PK and D3 did not max out to their potential. When you have Salman’s next BB reaching PK under 5-6% of its reach in few months that only shows that PK didn’t reach to its true potential.

PK today would have easily done 450 and beyond but that’s pointless to discuss now. So, for me PK and Dangal did reach its potential whereas Dhoom 3 and PK didn’t.

If Baahubali 2 does 500 cr nett in Hindi or anywhere near to that, it will be a tall order for Thugs to chase (forget Tubelight or TZH – these may as well under-perform after the Baahubali wave). It will not only take a record opener, but a v liked film to double its week 1 total to get near 500 cr. Again Vijay Acharya is a problem. Tashan was not accepted and Dhoom 3 could not double its week one. In that way Dhoom 1 & 2 director did better, as Dhoom 2 did double its week 1 even after being a record opener.

It will be interesting to see which film gets to 500 cr in future. Baahubali has shown that the market potential is there (even if its not able to get there in the long run).

The reason that Baahubali 2 hindi version is working so well, is because part 1 made a big connect with the audience when it released and later on satellite reruns. Without that brand, this would not have been possible.

Anyways, if he wants his next to work pan-India, his only option is to go for both north and south stars and mount it on a bigger budget and scale. Bollywood superstars have a penchant for big productions, and after Baahubali 2 I doubt if any star (north or south) would refuse to work in his next. – 800 cr WW Gross
    – 550 cr All India Nett
    – 250 cr Hindi Nett & 300 cr Nett for South versions

If this movie is indeed liked v much, it should be able to double its week one haul in the Hindi belt. We may be thus looking at first film to cross 500 cr in the Hindi market and its a dubbed film! This is indeed shameful for Bollywood. Most stars (barring Aamir) are made to look like regional stars in front of Baahubali 2. This maybe a lifetime event, but no Bollywood film in near future can dream to chase these pan-India numbers. Perhaps 2.0 will also throw up some astounding numbers if it works well in the Hindi market. Apart from that Rajamouli may be able to do this again if he does something in similar genre (say the Shivaji film) with a combination of North and South stars.

Box Office Baahubali 2 grosses 3.4 mil. USD [Rs. 22.05 cr.] at the U.A.EG.C.C box office in its opening weekend

Both Baahubali and its sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion made their way from the original Telugu language to the Hindi heartland in a dubbed avatar. That linguistic journey is about to be rewritten. The television series to be telecast from early 2018 based on the back stories of the plot in Baahubaali โ€“ The Beginning and its sequel Baahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion will be in Hindi.

Announces producer Shobu Yarlagadda, โ€œBaahubali doesnโ€™t belong to Andhra Pradesh anymore. Itโ€™s gone out to the world. Weโ€™ve decided to make the television series in Hindi, and then telecast it in different Indian languages. Why Hindi? Because itโ€™s the national language and has maximum reach.โ€

As for the second instalment of the epic saga, Baahubali 2 โ€“ The Conclusion that opened to packed theatres across the nation has been near unstoppable. In fact the film seems to be picking up in business as the days progress, looking set to establish new box office benchmarks.

In the recent years, other than a couple of triple centuries [Sultan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan], Salman Khan has also scored a couple of double centuries [Kick, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo]. With the release of Baahubali 2 [Hindi], each of these records is now in line to be surpassed.

First one to go is Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, what with its lifetime total of 210 crore been surpassed by the SS Rajamouli directed war drama in just 6 days. The film, after collecting 24 crore* more on Wednesday, now stands at 221 crore*. There is already a huge lead that the film has taken over the Salman Khan starrer and next in line is Kick [232 crore].

Both these double century records would be overtaken by Baahubali 2 [Hindi] in just one week and that shows the kind of strength that the film has managed to pull through. As a matter of fact, this is great news for Salman and the other Khans since it shows the power and reach of quintessential Hindi film when made for all segments of the audiences, hyped and pitched well, marketed impressively and released tremendously. Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh are of course far more popular on a pan-India basis when compared to Prabhas (who has been terrific in both instalments of Baahubali) and have a field wide open.

  163. Bahubali 2 Crushes Dangal In Six Days In USA

    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion has broken the US / Canada record gross total of Dangal in just six days. The Dangal record was $12,392,000 and Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion has easily gone above that. The final total will be far higher than what any Indian film has grossed in US / Canada. It is USA where it is running like crazy while the Canada figures are much less than Dangal and even lower than moderate Hindi grossers. This is mainly due to a have Telugu audience in the states

The collections could be even higher than listed below as many halls have been hired to play the Telugu version at exorbitant rates at a minimum $30 and the contribution from unreported can be more than listed below. Below is the business from US / Canada till date.

    Thursday – $2,540,000

    Friday – $4,546,608

    Saturday – $3,489,141

    Sunday – $2,317,929

    Monday – $587,486

    Tuesday – $1,066,750

    Wednesday – $530,330

    Unreported Fixed Hire Halls – $250,000 – $350,000

    GRAND TOTAL – $12,838,244

It was all Bahubali fans and Prabhas fans and when they heard Pawan Kalyan’s name, the whole crowd erupted with whistles and noise and didn’t let the speaker continue with his line. Seeing this tremendous fan following, K Vijayendra Prasad said this will be perfect setup for Interval point in part 2.

Baahubali 2 [Hindi] has scored 241 crore* in its first week, which is an out of the world number by all means. Never before a film accumulated such huge moolah in this kind of time-span and Baahubali 2 [Hindi] has managed this feat and that too in its dubbed version! The film not just opened ultra huge, it also sustained itself exceedingly well right through the week hence bringing the kind of collections that have been unheard of.

The film is now marching towards bigger glories in weeks to come. Current week is again open for it, what with no other big Hindi film hitting the screens. The stage is set wide open for the SS Rajamouli film to play around and majority of screens from the week before have been retained.

  171. Aamir Khan โ€“ Amitabh Bachchan starrer Thugs Of Hindostan on hold? Makers yet to finalize the female lead

Aamir โ€“ Amitabh starrer Thugs Of Hindostan on hold Makers yet to finalize the female lead

When it comes to Aamir Khan, everything from a pierced nose to a punctured schedule becomes big news. While the nation and its neighbourhood jeweller have been obsessing over Khan Sahibโ€™s nose ornament other problems plague his eagerly awaited project Thugs Of Hindostan which was supposed to start filming this summer.

It now seems unlikely that the opus will commence shooting anytime in the near future. An acute heroine crisis has hit Thugs Of Hindostan. While the two principal male leads Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan fell into place effortlessly, producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya are, in the words of an insider, โ€œfacing a major heroine hurdleโ€.

Theyโ€™ve approached everyone from Alia Bhatt to Fatima Sana Sheikh to Vani Kapoor. Somehow the lady who will romance Aamir is proving super-elusive.

According to an actor who read the script the problem is with the characterization. โ€œThe heroineโ€™s role is sketchy. Whoever plays the part will have little to do. The dramatic conflict is between Bachchan Saab and Khan Saab. In fact when Hrithik Roshan was supposed to do Thugs Of Hindostan he had pointed out this shortcoming in the script to Adi Chopra, and Adi had agreed with Hrithik. But instead of working on the heroineโ€™s role he changed the hero instead.โ€

Now that Aamir is on board and the film is all set to roll, the absence of female protagonist has created a sense of crisis at Yash Raj. Says an actor close to Ysh Raj, โ€œThe last time Yash Raj faced a similar heroine crisis was when they needed a second leading lady after Madhuri Dixit in Dil Toh Pagal Hai. This time until they finalize a leading lady Thugs Of Hindostan is on hold.โ€

Have to admit that YRF and Aamir are never a good combo. Aamir has to be careful here on decisions by Adi.
This is no Dhoom 3 where the franchisee will pull it thru and had Katrina in a modern day setup.
This patriotic period drama needs Aamir touch in creativity more than Adi’s touch.

This is the major problem with the film. Vijay the director seems to be held in high regards by YRF and it would seem Aamir. As great as this project sounds things aren’t adding up and until a major part of shooting is done I don’t even trust the film will get made!

  172. WOW! Aamir Khanโ€™s Dangal to release in China today across 9000 screens
    ByFaridoon Shahryar
    May 5, 2017 – 10:06 am IST

Aamir Khanโ€™s Dangal will release in China on this day

Aamir Khanโ€˜s Dangal continues to make news. Just last month we had reported that the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal that had hit screens back in December 2016 would be releasing across the border in China. In fact we had also reported that like the actorโ€™s previous Chinese release PK, Dangal too would enjoy a massive screen count in the nation.

Well, after creating a Hungama with its Box Office collections in India, Dangal is all set to release in China today in a whopping 9000 screens. To put things in perspective India has a total of 8000+ screens (5000 for Hindi at and 3000 for regional cinema). Dangal released in India in approximately 4500-5000 screens. And now it is releasing in China in a mammoth 9000 screens. Aamir Khan has a tremendous fan following in China. 3 Idiots and PK have witnessed huge success there and now Dangal is expected to score big. It remains to be seen what Dangal will break with its television premiere.

  173. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Is Biggest Blockbuster This Decade
    Friday 05 May 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) has grossed 245 crore nett apprx in its first week and smashed records by unimaginable margins. The previous first week record was Sultan at 208.99 crore nett and this film has done around 17% more but that does not tell the whole story as if we look at the territory figures the gaps are much more. Sultan in Mumbai held the first week record at 61.59 crore nett and Bahubali 2 (Hindi) has grossed 85 crore nett plus. In Delhi /UP the figure of Sultan was 40 crore nett and here it is 45 crore nett but this circuit has capacity problems which limits the gains. In East Punjab, Bahubali 2 (Hindi) grossed 27.50 crore nett apprx and the record first week business of Sultan was 21.96 crore nett.

The film is such a huge blockbuster that it will start to break ALL TIME CIRCUIT records in the next day or two. In a circuit like CP Berar the film has grossed more in one week than the lifetime of Sultan. A blockbuster of this proportion has not been seen in a long time and it much bigger than the likes of Dangal, PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and 3 Idiots.

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion is easily the biggest blockbuster of the decade and may well turn out to the biggest blockbuster this century also. Gadar – Ek Prem Katha (2001) is the biggest blockbuster post 2000 and the way Bahubali 2 is going at the moment you can’t rule the film turning out to be a bigger blockbuster than that film.

Baahubali 2 will show the south indian film industry the might of Hindi film box office.

Waiting for “Baahubali 0.1 – The rise of Sivagami” based on the book released last month. It can also be a TV series which would be big enough to break All time television record.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) is already the sixth highest grossing Hindi of all time in just over a week. This is without most of the South India market where the Hindi version has a limited release. If that was there it would have been at number crossing Dhoom 3. Normally its first week charts that are compared after one week but the collections are so high here that its beaten lifetime of most films.

It is likely that the film will surpass all others barring Dangal and PK over the next weekend and then Dangal and PK will not be far also. The film is going to cruise past the 400 crore nett mark and could even cross 450 crore nett. The top grossing films in Hindi till date are as follow.

Irrespective of the final numbers, one thing is clear, in first week the Hindi version has beaten Sultan’s week one record of 209 cr by a margin. That too in a non-holiday week against Sultan’s Eid week.

Also the WW gross of all versions has easily beaten PK’s WW collections of 792 cr by a margin.
