247 cr in week one is some number. It has gone ahead of 9 days week one of Sultan’s Eid release by 17-18 cr!
All-India is already 500+ cr nett.

The trending from here onward will give some idea about how well liked the film is. Going by the strong WOM, there seem to be a possibility of doubling this, which will be huge 500 cr nett from Hindi version itself. All India can get to 850 cr nett range too.

  2. Writer-director Vijay Krishna Acharya said, “The role of the girl is pivotal to the film so it was crucial for us to find the perfect fit. Through a rigorous round of auditions and action workshops, we found in Fatima a truly dedicated actor and a gifted performer of action. We are very happy to have found the perfect girl for our film.”

    • I’m 200% sure that Aamir has big hand in signing of Fatima Sana Sheikh for TOH. Besides the talent and all, it is perfect opportunity to move away from the ‘old’ image of Dangal and ‘show’ the world that he can still act as leading man to a girl played his daughter. This is the little bit of show off side of his nature. Can’t blame him though as he needs to look after his image and long career.

Scoop No Baahubali 3, says writer Vijayendra Prasad

The internet is littered with hopeful stories suggesting that now when Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion has become the biggest blockbuster of all times, the franchise may be extended into another film. However the film’ writer K Vijayendra Prasad shoots down all possibilities of the Baahubali saga going any further.

“We’ve told whatever story there was to tell. Baahubali was planned as a two-part feature film. We wrote the entire story comprising the two films from before we started shooting. Whatever story there was to tell has already been told,” says the veteran writer who is also the film’s director S S Rajamouli’s father.

Vijayendraji, however, reassures the fans of the franchise that there is no need to despair. “We’ve plenty of Baahubali spinoffs in the offing including a long-running television series. So it would be a long time before the Baahubali franchise dies.”

    3. Aamir’s finest (and perhaps the only one) association with YRF was FANAA (in today’s times – it would have raced away to 300 cr) but he goofed with stupid comments on NBA
    4. D3 was a crepfest but aamir’s credibility brought the mullah
    5. TOH – hope it is good…but VKA as director is a downer

BTW aamir also ha rejected Sooraj Barjatya’s HAHK – what was he smoking???/

But the worst he did was to reject Shanlkar’s Nayak – The real Hero – they are planning a sequel and i hope they take Aamir – Anil K was good but the project required Aamir ….

He also rejected Josh and Saajan……

Looks like you are smoking something too by including half of the films which didn’t go to Aamir at all. He was not offered DDLJ, HAHK and Nayak. He was removed from Darr, not rejected and it was SRK’s role and not Sunny. He rejected Saajan and Josh but for Chandrachur’s role and Mansoor Khan didn’t give him Max’s role over SRK which he asked.

        • SRK rejected Munnabhai MBBS, Lagaan, 3 Idiots! & some more iconic movies!! So ultimately what matters is the filmography rather than “first offered kind of deals” which don’t materialize for reasons privy to between the actors & filmmakers involved. It is just a hypothetical presumption especially by fans that had ‘x’ starred instead of ‘y’ in a given film, it would have made exactly the same impact or more both critically & financially as well, which is a pure bunkum notion as actors & stars bring a certain individuality, personal prestige & above all their signature to the projects they work in which constitute as a major reason for the acceptance & success of movies they act in. I can’t see Aamir as Mohan Bhargava of Swades or Kabir Khan of CDI nor could i imagine SRK playing Bhuvan of Lagaan or Rancho in 3 Idiots! in wildest dreams as both of them performed to perfection in their respective roles & made it their own by bringing in nuances & idiosyncracies of their own. This exercise is futile & does not make any sense at all, let us realise this is too late & nonsensical reimagining would yield zilch as a result. So it would be much better if our stars could channelise their energies towards something worthwhile just like Baahubali which requires utmost focus, dedication, patience & perseverance to reach near a vision as grand as Baahubali as realising or matching up to it would be improbable if not impossible!! Baahubali has shown the massive potential of Indian market & it’s up to hindi filmmakers to smell the coffee by basing their stories on Indian themes than aping west.

According to the reports, Dangal minted $1.51 million on the first day at Chinese markets as of 6 PM CST, which is Rs 9.6 crores in INR.

The film now surpassed Aamir Khan’s own ‘PK’ 1st day collection record of $900k, which is Rs 5.7 crores in INR. So it’s a great start for Dangal at the Chinese markets and if it continues to perform well for one to two weeks then there will be no doubt in Dangal emerging as new All-Time highest grossing Indian movie at the Chinese markets.

    Dangal Breaks Records In China
    Saturday 05 May 2017 18.30 IST

Dangal has scored big in China on day one with collections set to be around $2 million on day one. A few years back PK had done huge business grossing $20 million and that film on day open had grossed under $1 million which means that Dangal has doubled the business though it is reported to be a much wider release than PK. Aamir Khan has built a following in the neighbouring country and there is a market for his films there. It remains to be seen where Dangal goes but on the initial it should beat the numbers of PK.

The only problem with the China market is that Indian producers hardly get a return even if the film is successful. The films are taken outright by Chinese companies and they release and market the films there and the monies paid are well below $1 million. The revenue in Australia with just $2m apprx will be far more for the producers even if China goes on a crazy run. Its basically a token gesture release financially but what it does is allow a star like Aamir Khan to create a fan following which may allow better deals for him films in the future.

    • So, PK producers got just $1million for the $20 million gross in China? Looks same case with Dangal but will help future films.

      • It is more a fan building exercise than a financial one. Whatever it earns is real earning whether it goes to the chinese or the producers. That is the capacity of the film to generate money. A dud film cant generate money in the first place. And there is appreciation which is also good for everyone involved.

        • Its not that only Aamir films are released there. I think Fan, HNY,Bahubali 2 etc. released there but the earnings were less than .5 million dollars.

It was earlier reported by BOI that PK made around 3-3.5 million dollars for the producers out of total 20 million gross. They keep changing figures as per their agenda.

It’s also lost 2000 screens today as biggest cinema chain in China cancelled their screening. Wanda’s decision seems business related due to issues with Dangal’s distribution company. All it means is it’s a better opening than P.K, more screens but proportionally more collections so definitely set for records that will be hard to beat.

The producers not getting appropriate share is a moot point. Indian films in general dont work in the Chinese market. Fans can speculate that Dangal will do more than PK, but there is no business proof. PK’s success is the reason that Dangal is getting promoted and released in 9000 screens in China. The earnings will be added to the WW gross of the film and help set some records. Dangal is a good film, so it will garner goodwill in the Chinese market for future films of Aamir.

BOI just cant digest Dangal. Even when its has opened so well in China, it has to bring in some negativity.

Same was being done when SRK films were under performing in India, media was going ga-ga over his foreign numbers. Baahubali 2 is a true blue behemoth monster which is better than any other movie made in last 40 years and it is the biggest and greatest Indian movie ever made in india’s cinematic history.. Period. Accept it. Instead, posting collections of China, Fiji, Togo, Bolivia, Greenland and Antarctica can not bring back Number 1 status to Dangal, PK, Sultan or Bajarangi. Some other true blue behemoth must come to reclaim that status. Until that time just live with the reality that Baahubali 2 is the numero uno Indian film in India and the World for foreseeable future.

And bigger doesn’t always mean better as by the same yardstick every record breaking movie would naturally be the best surpassing all the past glorious hits of their times?? By your logic, Rajnikanth,Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Mamooty, Nagarjuna, Pawan Kalyan all of them are just lilliputs infront of tsunami called “Baahubali” as their grossers are nowhere near it despite their megastardom & Prabhas is biggest of them all going by your logic!! Baahubali is the myth buster and trend setter in a sense by becoming the highest hindi grosser of all times from south for the very first time in its hindi version alone where last record holders in hindi were used to be just a miniscule of their regional gross ie Robot netting just 20 Crores while its regional net was around 200 Crores!! Let’s wait & watch how far Prabhas goes as Baahubali’s colossal success is due to Rajamouli’s grand vision & he is the chief architect behind brand Baahubali & its gigantic success & showed us the power of a true blue director through his phenomenal executional & narrating skills in the form of utterly captivaing & engrossing content ensuing in breaking language & regional boundaries. The best of last 40 years is going too far & an overly exaggerational statement to make as all this is a pure subjective choice!!

  24. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Day Eight – Records Continue To Fall
    Saturday 06 May 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion grossed a huge 20 crore nett as per early estimates on its second Friday which is another record. The film has All TIME RECORDS now from day one to day eight and this looks set to continue for a long time. The total of the film is 265 crore apprx in eight days in Hindi. The previous day eight record was Dangal at 17.84 crore nett.

The film is phenomenal all over but in the Gujarat belt it is just crazy especially Saurashtra which is recording numbers which are just unbelievable. Some theatres in places like Rajkot, Junagadh, Bhuj have seen collections that are more than double of any release before. The film is breaking records in Gujarat by miles and this could take the film to a huge 150 crore nett in Mumbai circuit. It was only in January 2015 that PK went past the 100 crore nett mark in Mumbai and just two and a half years later this film is going towards 150 crore which will be almost 50% more. The collections of Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion in Hindi till date are as follows.

    Week One – 2,45,00,00,000 apprx

Week Two – 20,00,00,000 apprx (Friday)

    Grand Total – 2,65,00,00,000

The film is now the fifth highest grosser as far as Hindi language films are concerned as it crosses Dhoom 3 (2013) in eight days. It will go past Sultan (2016) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) over the weekend and then by the end of the week it will cruise past PK (2014) and may even beat Dangal (2016).

The Hollywood release Guardians Of The Galaxy could not really stand up to Bahubali 2 and grossed around 2 crore nett apprx on its first day.

    Saturday 06 May 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali – The Conclusion continued to break more records in Hindi as it recorded the highest ever second Friday collection at around 20 crore nett apprx. If the final collection does not drop a little below this mark then it will be the first time that 20 crore nett will be breached on the second Friday. Till date only 18 films have topped 20 crore nett on day one and this film may be doing it on its second Friday which is incredible. Dangal had grossed a little under 18 crore nett a few months back on its second Friday but this film is 20% higher.

Many of the films below are from that Christmas period which is good for collections while Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion is recording these numbers in May which is not though of as the best period of collections but this film has changed all that and proves if content is good you will collect at any time The top fifteen second Friday collections are as follows..

But then the record is going to last barely 4-5 months. Times have changed really. Sholay’s record remained untouched for decades. HAHK’s record lasted for 6-7 years. Gadar as well remained on top for 5-6 years. We had 3 Idiots whose record held for 4 years.

But then we saw that Chennai Express lasting only a couple of months on top before several movies zoomed past it.

Dangal’s record is going to be broken by the most unlikeliest of films. A dubbed movie without any big star, releasing during a low period without any holidays. This movie has defied all odds.

There is something called Demand Elasticity, wherein consumers are willing to pay much higher prices to obtain a better product which is also supplied at higher levels. The Iphone is an example. BB2 has successfully tested the extremes of this elasticity, by increasing price as well as supply (ie screen count).
Highly doubt that a Tubelight can be successful at pushing the limits of Demand Elasticity.

We are first dubbing the film into Chinese. After studying the Chinese film market and seeing the incredible number of theatres across China, we’ve decided to do a full-scale dubbed version of Baahubali 2. This will be followed by a dubbed Japanese version of our film. Then there would be a Korean and Taiwanese versions.

      • @aamirsaurabh . Don’t be so sure. 😄 Nothing surprises me anymore. The world has become a connected place and people are beginning to bond beyond divisions. Bahubali 2 has worked throughout India, so why not China.

Of course Aamir’s films have worked for a specific reason, the themes, the characters that he has played — they have resonated with the Chinese people. The student dissatisfaction theme of 3 Idiots, the questioning of religion in PK — it has struck a chord with Chinese youth. Ditto with Dangal — as explained in the HT article ( link given by Sanjana below).

I think 3 Idiots worked in Japan and South Korea too. PK is to release in Japan later this year, I think.

Team Tubelight is planning a publicity tour through China. They already have a Chinese actress as part of cast.

Many of us in India appreciate films from Japan, China, Iran, Turkey, Hungary…any piece of good cinema that we can relate to. At film festivals in our metros, these films get good crowds. I have watched quite a few lovely films , this way.

Good to see our cinema reaching new places.

  31. Baahubali: What powered Bhallaladeva’s revolving blade chariot? A Royal Enfield engine

We now know what intelligent engineering went into making Bhalladeva’s lethal saw-blade chariot for Baahubali.
    regional movies

    Hindustan Times

It was all made possible by an engine from a Royal Enfield.

A week after release of the grand Indian blockbuster Baahubali: The Conclusion, we know almost every detail that excited us, for no personal gain whatsoever: its budget of Rs 250 crore, its post-release rampage at the box-office, that Rana Daggubatti is blind in one eye, and also where Prabhas, the Baahubali, is vacationing these days.

So just when you thought there’s nothing left to know, here’s one more for you.

Do you know what powered Bhallaladeva’s battlefield chariot which had that revolving blade at the front?

It was a Royal Enfield engine, tells Baahubali’s production designer Sabu Cyril.

“Bhallala Deva’s chariot was built around a Royal Enfield engine so that it would get the power and speed it required. We had done the same in the first part as well,” Cyril was quoted as saying by Manorama Online.

“The chariot also had proper car steering and a driver. We had great fun designing and making it,” the 55-year-old designer said.

Cyril was part of both the films and created everything from the Mahismathi kingdom’s walls to the giant elephants and even the thousands of shields used by warriors.

What more? He created Devasena’s palace at an aluminium factory in Hyderabad. “We felt it needed to look feminine and that’s why we chose a white marble palace. It was made on four acres at an aluminium factory in Hyderabad,” he said.

The swords of the soldiers had to look strong like steel but be light and convenient. Cyril had said he used carbon fibre, the material used to make race cars and chopper blades, to make the swords and other arms used in the movie.

Amitabh Bachchan and RGV to show 15 minutes of Sarkar 3 to a select few people

Ever since the time Ram Gopal Varma announced Sarkar 3, which happens to be the next instalment in the cult ‘Sarkar’ series, the film has been making news for many reasons. Ram Gopal Varma recently took to the social media and termed the film as “SARKAR without BACHCHAN is like DOODH without MILK”.

Recently, Amitabh Bachchan and Ram Gopal Varma have decided to show a fifteen minute showreel called ‘Some Moments From Sarkar 3’ to a select few journalists on Monday. While the main motive behind the maverick filmmaker showing the showreel is not yet known, one thing is for sure that the ‘marketing’ of the film has indeed started on a positive note!

        • What is wrong in appreciating the fact that an Indian film and its star are being loved by a neighbouring country? Aamir’s 3 Idiots Dhoom 3 and PK have already done very well in China; the youth have really made a connect with Aamir; he was there with director Nitiah Tiwari, for a week recently, at the invitation of Chinese distributors of Dangal. It was his second visit; a couple of years back Aamir in his fat Dangal avatar , Aamir had visited China along with Hirani, to promote PK. His popularity seems to have increased since then, judging by the pics and videos on FB. Tiny neighbour Taiwan has already accepted Dangal to heart, now China. Why not appreciate the fact that Asia is watching Indian cinema?

Soon it will be the turn of Tubelght and Bahubali 2; for both films, big plans are being made, with reference to China.

Incidentally, the reaction from a section of social media commenters is more like jeering at Hindi cinema and it’s established stars, rather than celebrating Bahubali 2 success. What a pathetic attitude. As if Hindi cinema has not been around for a hundred years, entertained us through the years, continues to do so.

    • So what makes Sarkar 3 special?
The style of the screenplay is designed to severely overawe the viewer and thematically on the surface, we see something which suggests that there is something else beneath. What ultimately will be there, will still surprise the audience.

“Amitabh Bachchan has far outdone himself in Sarkar 3” – Ram Gopal Varma1

As is being pretty much established with the promo of Sarkar 3, a wounded tiger is the most dangerous. So, how does the character of Subhash Nagre further develop now a decade down the line?
I would rather have the audience watch that process when they see the film.

Coming to the man who makes it all possible, Amitabh Bachchan. How have you worked on ensuring that he is ‘Angrier Than Ever’?
I feel, in the last decade, filmmakers including me, have forgotten what both we and the audience primarily loved Bachchan for, which is about both his power and menacing anger. This is what I have attempted to bring back.

As for Big B himself, how has he outdone himself with this film, more so, since expectations are from him to take it to the next level with the third in the series?
I truly believe that he has far outdone himself and that’s because of the situations he is placed in which are far more complex than the earlier two instalments. The scale and the negative forces in the earlier two films will pale in comparison to those of Sarkar 3 and that will, of course, call for Sarkar to deal with them in a much more ruthless premeditation and in the process, showcase an ultra-savage side of his nature lurking hidden beneath his charming front.

Guess a lot has gone into his characterization.
See, what ultimately has to excel far beyond the earlier two films is the character of ‘Sarkar’. He has to take the viewers on a never before emotionally charged and exhilarating ride. This time, I wanted to create the strongest character ever and that, of course, can happen only when the situations are much stronger than the earlier two films.

In fact, with Sarkar 3, you have also managed to score an enviable record by being the only filmmaker other than Manmohan Desai and Hrishikesh Mukherjee to have made 8 films with him (Sarkar, Sarkar Raj, Sarkar 3, Darna Zaroori Hai, Nishabd, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, Department, Rann). How do you look at this? Are you being lucky, fortunate, or just the man whose ideas end up exciting Big B most?
This is a question best asked to Mr. Bachchan himself. But, as per me, no one excites me more than him to place in front of my camera!

  35. Bahubali has successfully mended the North South divide. It has exploited the boxoffice to the fullest potential. One don’t need to set record in every region to be a record grosser. But when a film breaks record in every region by a big margin than the story is different and total amounts to a figure which is way above the normal blockbusters. The verdict by BOI and some other sites for Bollywood movies are way loose. You can’t have an ALL TOME BOCKBUSTER every year. For a film to be a hit of that proportion one has to be an outlier like Bahubali 2 . The film will break record by a big margin and that has to be the criterion. In the last 15 years there have been only two ATB 3 idiots and now Bahubali 2 rest Dangal, PK, BB etc all blockbusters .

Dangal doing good in China is a great thing of Indian cinema. The people in the eastern part of the world does not comprises regular Indian diaspora. Till now Indian movies are being watched by Indians or PIOs only. But doing these sort of numbers is great because that may make way for the future film to exploit the potential. I think its more of a reflection of Indian Soft power then anything else.

True, growing up, there were only 7 movies considered as blockbuster/classic. Pick up any film magazine from prior to 1990 and one of these films will be listed in it.

      Kismat
      Mother India
      Mighal E Azam
      Sholay
      Jain Santoshi Ma
      Ram Teri Ganga Maili

There was another Ashok Kumar film which escapes my mind and there is one more film.

Now a days everything is classis or blockbuster.

Same thing with term superstar. In my days it was Rajesh and then bachhan. Imagine, even dilip, raj, dev were never mentioned as superstar.

Now a days even akshay kumar has superstar tag.

      Like

      • the labels don’t mean anything these days. They’re used loosely or to serve various agendas. I still believe Rajesh Khanna (for a brief period) and Bachchan (for a longer one) were the only true superstars. Rajesh Khanna used to say he was the first one and Bachchan the last and he was right. Great as that 50s trio was they never had this kind of concentrated, really mind boggling kind of success. This leaving aside the larger sense in which they became a complete film culture all by themselves. So if those standards are used no one else is a superstar (of course there are superstars elsewhere in India). But if you use it loosely for just a successful star it’s a different thing but then the term loses all meaning. The same thing for ‘all time blockbuster’. Only a handful of films reached that category. Because again you had to relativize things taking various things into account. Not just absolute gross. The same for other hit categories. Now even today in the trade journals they adhere to those categories (though they might differ a bit from journal to journal) but in the popular media the very same folks present a very different picture. In the last 25 years or so there hasn’t been a film as big as HAHK all things considered. Not even Gadar. The latter was extraordinary in smaller centers, great in major metros but not stunning the way it was in these smaller ones. Still few films could be compared with it pound for pound. But HAHK is a different level. Now it’s fair to say that today nothing can lost that long in the theaters for all kinds of reasons. So HAHK today wouldn’t be HAHK. A film can make 200 or 500 or whatever but it will still make it more or less in the initial few weeks. Baahubali proves this too. But again all this definitions are mostly pointless. They make for good coverage in the media and nothing more.

    May 7, 2017

Ever since the inception of the 100 crore, 200 crore and 300 crore club, there have been just four films that have managed to find an entry into the triple century club. Now Baahubali 2 [Hindi] would be stepping into this arena by this evening, what with 290 crore* already in its kitty. On Saturday, the film collected 23.25 crore* more and managed to achieve this feat. In the process it has beaten quite a few biggie blockbusters on its way and marched into the list of Top-5 All Time Highest Grossers in mere 9 days.

This is how the list of films along with their lifetime scores looks like:

    Dangal – 387.38 crore
    PK – 340.80 crore
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 321 crore
    Sultan – 301.50 crore
    Baahubali 2 [Hindi] – 290 crore* (9 days)

While the first couple of films star Aamir Khan in the lead, the third and the fourth slot belong to Salman Khan. Now this all-Khan list is being further penetrated by Prabhas as his Baahubali 2 [Hindi] is set to go past Sultan by evening and then Bajrangi Bhaijaan would be history too by tomorrow. From there on, it would be a march towards the top two biggies in line, PK and Dangal. Though PK should be surpassed soon enough as well, it would be interesting to see the kind of pace that Baahubali 2 [Hindi] manages en route the target set by Dangal.

SS Rajamouli and his team is now playing with the big boys and is pretty much winning the battle in the arena.

The article is interesting in that it points to the protectionist attitude of local business. An excerpt:

On China’s most popular cinema portals, Dangal has been uniformly applauded. On social media app WeChat, the movie enjoys the highest rating among films currently being shown in China with a 9.8 score out of 10.

There is a threat though from China’s protective cinema operator, Wanda. Wanda believes Dangal will hurt the interests of the local movies. Wanda cinemas have a near monopoly in the smaller cities and towns of China. Wanda says its will cut down Dangal screenings to less than 50 in the interior China. This will affect the movie’s collective earnings, but the big cities would have done the good deed for Aamir.

Despite Wanda’s lack of interest in the film, a number of Chinese celebrities have come out to promote the film. The actor Deng Chao posted a message on the Chinese Twitter-equivalent, Sina Weibo, telling fans to watch it, while actress Liu Yifei promoted the film along with Aamir Khan during his visit.

“I give full marks to Dangal,” wrote another fan. “I was touched that I cried so much and when I ran out of tissue, I borrowed two pieces of it from a stranger beside me, I am going to watch it again and again.”

Of late there has been a upsurge in the popularity of Indian mythological dramas and other TV serials from India despite the fact Indo-China relations are in a downward spiral.

The TV dramas Naagin, Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, the 2013 series Mahabharat, and Buddhaa-Rajaon Ka Raja have all been subtitled into Chinese and viewed by hundreds of thousands of people online. On one of China’s widely used video-sharing websites, Bilibili, the first four episodes of Naagin’s second season had 1.8 lakh views.

Viewers have created subtitles by translating them from available English or and sometimes Russian subtitles.

One of the first such volunteer subtitle groups run by fans was started last year by Yang Buhui, 29, who works in the gaming industry.

“Indian mythology is just fascinating. Its philosophy and worldview, which are exotic, have been a new world to me,” Yang said.

    Like

    • In the overseas Dangal has crossed 300 Crore mark & looking at China trends, it could well be the first 500 Crores grosser in the overseas. But Baahubali’s domestic business is mind boggling & would require a very special movie to surpass its Indian nett & gross. Within 4 months, 2 Indian movies have made more than 1800 Crores globally & still running strong with all the probabilty of ending in excess of 2200 Crores!! And this is just the beginning of seizing the infinite opportunities Indian movie market has before them only if they could learn the right lessons from these 2 movies.

    Bahubali 2 The Conclusion (2)

Even though one may see and enjoy films on the screen, the reality is far away from what it ‘appears’. In order to get one frame right, there are many workers and crew members who are instrumental. And when the film is as gigantic as Bahubali 2, the risk involved slightly becomes larger than usual.

That’s why, ‘Future Generali Insurance Co’s policy had covered the risks of Bahubali 2, right from its pre-production to the post-production stages. The said insurance player covered the smash hit Bahubali 2 for over Rs.200 crore under its film package insurance product. As per a statement issued by ‘Future Generali’, the said policy insured Bahubali 2 against all the unforeseen incidents like death, illness of an actor or occurrence of natural calamities or accidental damage leading to delays in the film schedule. Additionally, it also included the coverage against accidents that damage equipment while shooting was in process.

Speaking about the same, K.G. Krishnamoorthy Rao (Managing Director and Chief Executive- Future Generali) said that in the year 2017 alone, they had issued 160 film insurance policies, of which most of them were in Bollywood. He added that they were now wanting to focus on the southern market as well, because they were confident of catering to the unique requirements of the film industry

I am happy for both the movies and it is a triump for Indian Cinema that in the span of 4 months – it has collected 1800+ cr worldwide and more to come….

“Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2” scored a comfortable opening weekend win at the China box office. The greater surprise was the strength of Aamir Khan-starring Indian film “Dangal.”

“Guardians 2” enjoyed a day and date opening with North America and other major markets and scored $45.9 million in China, according to data tracking firm Ent Group. It played from upwards of 95,000 screenings per day, with the figure exceeding 100,000 on Saturday. The first “Guardians” was released in October 2014 and scored $96.5 million. “Dangal” achieved a smashing $11.3 million in second place. It played some 30,000 screenings per day and achieved a per screen average very similar to ‘Guardians.”

Amitabh Bachchan on violence against women

Amitabh Bachchan feels the public outcry and the trial of the rapists and murders in Nirbhaya

case have been a wake-up call for the entire nation. Big B feels such offenders must be punished by the harshest sentence possible. He also feels the male child must be taught from a young age to respect women.

Says the iconic actor, “Severe punishment is a deterrent through policing and legal methods. But society will have to change by educating its citizens from a very early age, on what our morals and principles need to be.”

Bachchan feels every Indian male needs to respect women. “Respect and dignity towards women in society, a sense of equality as fellow citizens, as contributors in equal measure, without discrimination is what needs to be inculcated amongst all of us. Women are half the strength of a nation, they cannot be looked upon as being inferior or mere objects of desire, and this is what the polity needs to be educated on. Educate the woman in a home and the entire family gets educated. Religion has given the female the honour of a ‘devi’ in many powerful forms. Understand that philosophy and lets us conduct ourselves accordingly.”

However restricting women from entering male-dominated areas of activity is, according to Big B not the solution. “Putting restrictions on women by preventing them from moving out late, or in arming themselves, is defensive thought. The women in our country need to be free of such apprehensions. They must feel and have the freedom of safety without having to think of any possible fear or danger.”

Big B feels the safety of women is a public issue. “The system shall always have limitations, the police cannot be everywhere and the law shall take its course. It is the people that shall have to change their mind set. The people must become that unseen force that assumes the role of the protector during such heinous crimes. The people must be brought up in a manner that provokes their sensibilities to do what is right and just.”

Amitabh Bachchan feels the public clamour for justice in the Nirbhaya case proves there is hope for the safety of women. “The spontaneous public response on the streets of the Capital and in other parts of the country did cause the system to take note of and provide immediate action on the unfortunate Nirbhaya incident. Consideration for the change in the laws and in quick legal action was indeed initiated. But the legal system has its own procedural compulsions. Governance shall continue to make provision for act on similar incidents, the police shall apprehend the culprits in as rapid a manner as possible, as was demonstrated by the Mumbai Police in the recent case, and the law shall be moved and take its own course, but the question really is whether all this can provide the much required safety for women in our country. This is best answered by what and how our s society reacts and conducts itself.”

Big B feels we are a long way off from providing women with a sense of security, “Women’s safety in our country has been taking a beating. It is for us to change that impression. The system shall execute justice by the rules. But we shall have to also implement effectively the right morals as individuals.”

We sat for almost three hours at a suburban hotel and only discussed Sanju sir. He was fascinated by my videos and asked me how I could imitate him [Dutt] so easily.”

The 28-year-old adds that Ranbir asked a lot of questions about Dutt. “Sanju sir has a peculiar style of walking and talking, and Ranbir wanted to learn everything. He was impressed with the way I impersonate Sanju sir rolling his eyes while talking; he wanted to learn that too. I have heard that Ranbir still refers to my online videos.”

Sanket says he admires Ranbir’s humility and eagerness to learn. “He never made me feel inferior. It’s difficult to play Sanjay Dutt. I couldn’t think of anyone other than the actor himself for the film. But, I believe Ranbir is lucky [to have bagged the part]. Looking at the photographs that are coming out, I am sure he has done complete justice,” he asserts.

Ranbir is taking help from top stand-up comic and internet sensation Dr Sanket Bhosale, who is known to effortlessly mimic several Bollywood stars including Dutt, Salman Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Sonu Nigam.

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani says over half the shooting for the Sanjay Dutt biopic is done, and that the team will head for a schedule in New York later this year.

“Shooting wise, 60 percent of the film is done. We are starting our next schedule now and will wrap that up by mid-June and after that, we will have another schedule in New York,” Hirani said on Sunday as he launched writer-director Tanuja Chandra’s book ‘Bijnis Woman’.

He is excited about the project.

“I am very glad that we are making a film with a lot of positivity and happiness and I feel when you make a film with a lot of joy, you are bound to make a good film and the story of the film is brilliant. Plus, Ranbir Kapoor is looking incredible in the film,” Hirani added.

Hirani, known for the Munna Bhai series and 3 Idiots, said his films are based and inspired from books and life’s experiences.

“Whatever you make has to come from either your experiences or from what you have read or seen somewhere. I feel every creation is from your memories. Abhijat Joshi (co-writer) and I especially choose to pick some memories and real life incidents and modify it. We usually pick it from our life and modify it to suit our film,” he said.

Talking about his love for books, Hirani said: “Books are really precious. I really like reading. I can’t sleep till the time I don’t read a book even if it is for 10 minutes. But now I feel that culture is vanishing somewhere. I think books are your friends and books are best way to get knowledge, stories and to know the world.”

The Sanjay Dutt biopic also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Vicky Kaushal, Dia Mirza and Jim Sarbh. The film is scheduled to release around the end of this year in December.

    Excerpts

‘If Baahubali were to be made in Bollywood, I would take Hrithik Roshan as Baahubali and Deepika Padukone for Devsena.’

Baahubali writer K V Vijayendra Prasad looks back at the epic blockbuster.

Who was your favourite character in Baahubali?

Sivagami. She has so many shades to her character.

Devsena is also a good character but it doesn’t have shades as much as Sivagami.

    Which is your favourite scene?

The scene when Baahubali gets stabbed by his mama Kattappa. He dies majestically like a king.

Baahubali’s appeal is universal. Did you always want to write a script with a Pan-India appeal?

Baahubali is a period film. You cannot restrict to a particular region or language. Since it is set in an old era, Baahubali crosses the threshold of the regional as far as the story is concerned.

If you had to cast someone from Bollywood for the film, whom would you cast?

Hrithik Roshan as Baahubali and Deepika Padukone for Devsena.

A few years ago, I saw Game of Thrones and I loved those wonderful characters and plots. You see a greater story in Mahabharata; it is the mother of all great tales. There are so many lead characters in Mahabharata that you cannot write or talk about one single character.

I longed to do such a show and Game Of Thrones gave me confidence. When people enjoy Game Of Thrones in India, why can’t we tell our own story?

So I thought about a plot where not one but six characters are born at the same time. The story will unfold simultaneously. Ultimately, it’s an amalgamation of matriarchy and patriarchy societies.

Is there any other story you would like to tell?

    Chatrapathi Shivaji’s story.

You have also written Bajrangi Bhaijaan, one of the biggest hits of Salman Khan.

Salman is a warm and wonderful human being. During Bajrangi Bhaijaan, I would feel that he wasn’t acting most of the time, but just reacting naturally to situations. Once I asked him about it, and he said, ‘You are right. Many times, tears roll out naturally.’

What are the other Hindi films you are working on?

Jhansi Ki Rani, Rowdy Rathore 2 and Nayak 2.

Haha – Prabhas is a much better actor than most Bollywood stars. Hrithik Roshan as Baahubali would have been laughing stock with his shaking head, trembling lips and flaring nostrils. Deepika may have been good as Devsena.

And the Shivaji reference pops up again. Wont be surprised if Rajamouli indeed does a film on Shivaji in near future.

‘Operation Khukri’ carried out in Sierra Leone in 2000 was one of the most successful rescue operation carried out by the Indian Air Force. The mission was carried out in the forests of Kailahun, where the Indian Air Force managed to rescue 223 peacekeepers, who were captured by the Nigerian rebels, with no causalities save for a few shrapnel wounds.

SLB probably tried a few times like Gowariker to do Bahubali. The former is too indulgent, the latter plain boring. I’m more confident on TOH as it seems a period war film with sea battles – intriguing.

So the Hindi version may be possible to be chased down. But it will either take a well-liked Salman movie or an Aamir’s big film to get this done. Others I dont think have a chance.

2.0 will do well enough in its Hindi version, but 450 cr seems too much.

With big production houses mulling over pre production of projects, films like Dutt and TZH can’t do much but just play out their films. It’s possible Robot 2.0 team had a hint on this and delayed their film. Hardly surprised at more delays with SLB film as a lot of his work is geared at the Bahubali world – that film will unfortunately be compared to Bahubali so he’ll need to really think that one out. TOH has potential and I’m warming more to this each and every day. A sea adventure is a huge USP.

The film suffering the most is Tubelight, it’s teaser was mixed at best. It’s got 7-8 weeks to fix it. So far from some blogs and articles it’s not been well received at all. It’s got Salman so a guaranteed opening (though I would not be surprised if it performed like PRDP), but will need to be exceptionally well received to challenge Dangal let alone Bahubali 2. It’s got no excuse with screens showing Bahubali 2 (like 2 years ago) as by the time of release, Bahubali 2 is probably seen by maximum audience it can capture in today’s time. Very likely that Tubelight will be the film to kick Bahubali 2 out of the Hindi belt theatres as till then BB2 can have a long run as the second Monday hold suggests.

I don’t know how a normal mass audience will prefer a movie like Tubelight over last year’s Sultan. Bajrani was an outlier and the went further in that direction and displayed Salman’s weakness in acting inspired from a weak Hollywood movie. Even though I don’t mind Sohail Khan but he’s easy punching bag and Salman Khan crying and searching for Sohail Khan on big screen – its not an easy sight and easily bound to start lot of jokes! When the movie falls with negative reviews the Sohail factor will easily help to plummet to the bottom quickly!

Rasping prediction but do agree. Film will highlight the weakness of Salman the actor and Kabir Khan – story writer. BB was written by same guy for Bahubali so Tubelight is relying on Kabirs writing and Salman’s acting. The mix is already not showing a good connection. Right now the cinematography is a plus & possibly the Chinese factor being an unknown could pay off.

I can be wrong. Happily pleased if quality is close to Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

So, is there any possibility for the audience connect Salman searching Sohail?? That too in comparison with the dumb&deaf girl in BB? No chance I would say!

Many reasons against it. Firstly Tubelight looks like to underperform. Katrina is past her prime and not at her level as part 1. Hirani’s Dutt can release same day and ruin the records and I don’t see Salman’s movies as trending types to cover up the loss of half screens easily.

  81. Bollywood’s perception of thieves and portrayal of robbery has always been interesting to witness. And now with Bank Chor, it is giving us a comedy experience keeping the premise similar to what we have seen before. The trailer of the film, which stars Riteish Deshmukh, is out and reminds us of classic comedies and the Tom and Jerry chase sequences, taking us totally on a laughter ride. Well, you can trust Riteish when it comes to comedy.

Riteish’s character Champak is a blend of Charlie Chaplin and Asrani, who have aced comedy in their own way. Champak is a thief who believes in vaastu shastra and offers prayers to his weapons before he goes out to rob. By the way, he cannot shoot. When he plans robbery of the lifetime, it takes a U-turn and puts him in a difficult situation. While he always has been able to sneak out with money, this time he is stuck with Amjad Khan, not Sholay’s Gabbar but a policeman portrayed by Vivek Oberoi. The dialogues are quirky and full on entertaining. You will hear mentions of Aamir Khan, Deepak Tijori and Arvind Kejriwal too.

Oh, expect some rap too as the film also has Baba Sehgal in a cameo role. Directed by debutant director Bumpy under the production of Aditya Chopra, Ashish Patel, Rajat Kanti Sarkar and Aashish Singh, the film is scheduled for June 16 release. Y Films’ Bank Chor is a much delayed project, which was scheduled for an early 2015 release but is finally coming to theatres on 2017.

Bahubali – The Conclusion in just eleven days has passed the 700 crore nett barrier in India. The film is crossing benchmarks at a lightning pace and its hard to say where this is going to stop.

The Hindi version is easily collecting more than regional versions of the film. The NETT and GROSS of the Hindi version was always going to be higher than the regional versions after the first week figures. Now the Hindi version may even get close in terms of distributor share. Basically the performance of the Hindi version is going to the best. Even better than the original Telugu version.

Tamannaah plays the character of Avantika in the epic drama. It is said the makers deleted several portions that were low on CGI effects. Since most of them involved Tamannaah, they had to be snipped. Being part of a magnum opus that is rewriting BO history is a big reason to feel proud, Tamannaah says.

Paresh Rawal’s Atithii Iin London renamed as Guest Iin London

The legendary Shakespeare once asked, “What’s in a name”. Well, if you are the makers of Atithii Iin London, which starred the legendary Paresh Rawal and Kartik Aaryan in the lead roles, then, the name really means everything. While on one hand, the film is making brisk progress, on the other hand, its makers felt something amiss about the title and hence, renamed it as Guest Iin London.

The film’s director Ashwni Dhir, alongwith Panorama Studios & Kiaan Entertainment Ltd. (UK) felt that Guest Iin London is more appropriate for the film and is totally in sync with the film’s narrative. The second reason for them to change the film’s title was that, many thought that this film was a sequel to the 2010’s Ajay Devgn-Konkona Sen starrer Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge?, which was not the case. The third aspect for the change in title was because Panorama Studios were in discussion with Warner Bros. Pictures to make the sequel of Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge. And, Warner Bros. Pictures, who own the rights of Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge and its sequel, were keen to make the film once they had the perfect story to follow Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge.

Besides Paresh Rawal and Kartik Aaryan, Guest Iin London also stars Kriti Kharbanda, Tanvi Azmi and Sanjay Mishra. The film, which has been extensively shot in London & New York, will be releasing on June 16 this year.

I’ve lived in Munich for 6 months and it’s dubious to say there is not a huge NRI community, obviously compared to UK, US, AUS & CAN it is smaller. But there are many big banks for a start. And there are plenty of Indians – it is NOT a huge German Caucasian population driving these numbers. Indians travel well and have huge secondments out of India into the West via IT, Genpact etc. Even small countries like Holland in cities like Amsterdam have sizeable Indian communities. The odd Caucasian will be a fan – it will be an inferior % to Indians. The German myth is as laudable as the Swiss or Austrian. I stayed in pub/restaurant in a strong Germanic region in a ski resort – and guess what it was owned by Indians! Heck even west Africa is full of Indians, many countries in Africa period. BOI portrays SRK as not only a global Indian superstar but a global superstar. As if little English villagers with no sign of Indians have a hunger for Indian films. They only like Indian food! That’s as Indian as they’ll be!

In any case barring UK, European market for Indian films is negligible – it’s nothing compared to Asian markets now. Even UK has been stagnant for many years. Years ago it had parity with US, now even UAE is ahead probably. China has blasted ahead IF Aamir’s success translates into further Indian films working there. But it has not happened (yet).

Shahrukh is left with little choice as his next release is in Dec. 2018 by then Akshay, Salman will have multiple releases & Aamir 1 & 1/2 movies released, which would leave Shahrukh at no. 4 in the best case scenario. Even Ranbir with Dutt biopic & Jagga Jasoos, if both turn out to be big hits, could be a threat to Shahrukh.

While many Bollywood celebrities have lauded the film’s team for its phenomenal success, director Rohit Shetty too heaped praises on the movie at a recent event in Mumbai.

Talking about the film’s unparalleled success, Rohit said, “The success of ‘Baahubali 2’ is because of the script and direction, and not because of Prabhas’ popularity.”

The director also pointed out that the film’s team did not have to go into a promotional overdrive to make it a blockbuster. “As I said earlier, a lot of promotions are not needed for a film to mint more money at the box-office. We normally see actors promoting their films massively on reality shows, in shopping malls, colleges and many other places, which is not needed indeed. Look at ‘Baahubali 2’ and you will get the answer.”

Rohit also expressed his desire to work with ‘Baahubali 2’ lead Prabhas in future. He excitedly said, “I would love to work with Prabhas, of course! Actually, I would love to work with all the actors in the South.”

  93. Will Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar 3 & Yashraj Films’ Meri Pyaari Bindu survive the Baahubali avalanche?

Will Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar 3 & Yashraj Films’ Meri Pyaari Bindu survive the Baahubali avalanche

Would Ram Gopal Varma and Parineeti Chopra be able to make that comeback that they were hoping to this week? Ram Gopal Varma hasn’t had a hit since Sarkar Raj in 2008. He is looking at the third Sarkar film as his comeback ticket into Bollywood. However theatre chains are not likely to welcome Varma’s successful franchise as enthusiastically as expected.

A representative of a leading multiplex chain from Mumbai says, “Sarkar 3 would have got much better screen space without the Baahubali factor. Right now, we are not inclined to remove Baahubali from any shows.”

Apparently Yash Raj films cut a deal with the multiplex chains for a decent number of screens to be given to their Friday release Meri Pyari Bindu. “Yash Raj had foreseen the roadblock posed for new releases by the Baahubali juggernaut. They therefore reserved their screens from long before the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which the multiplex theatres would now have to allot, regardless of the Baahubali craze. So if any other film gets any space this week it’s Meri Pyaari Bindu,” says an informed trade source

Plus there is the big Hollywood franchise Alien: Covenant, the latest in Ridley Scott’s Alien series, being released by Fox-Star which gets a scattering of theatres as it is being dubbed in Hindi Tamil and Telugu. So trade pundits feel Sarkar 3 is likely to be the fourth choice of moviegoers’ this week after Baahubali 2, Alien: Covenant and Meri Pyaari Bindu.

Says trade analyst Atul Mohan, “The way Bahubali mania has gripped the nation I think in the third week also it would be the first choice of multiplexes owners .They would rather give Baahubali preference than this week’s new releases. It’s better to place bets on a horse which is winning the race than on dark horse because you never how dark the untried horse is. Moreover the multiplex chains will benefit more from Baahubali if they continue it in the third week as their share percentage increases.”

Swach Bharat Producers asked to clean out abuses against women1

Want your film to be seen by viewers of all ages? Then keep the audio clean. And don’t even think of abusing women. Not even a ‘Saali’ is allowed. It is reliably learnt the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC)has been instructed by the Ministry Of Information & Broadcasting to get rid of all signs of verbal and physical violence against women even if it is a film about domestic violence.

Says a source from the CBFC, “Not a slap will be allowed even if it’s a film about domestic violence. You can show the women with a black eye or a swollen cheek. But you can’t show how she got it.”

“Saali” might be an acceptable term in conversations in many parts of the country. However the producers of Saket Chowdhary’s Hindi Medium were told to knock it off if they wanted a ‘U’ certificate.

Reveals a source from the censor board, “Hindi Medium is a message-oriented film. It tells us how difficult parents find it to enrol their children in good schools. We wanted both parents and kids to watch the film. But there were some abuses hurled at women. We asked them to go before granting the film a ‘U’ certificate.”

It is learnt that Hindi Medium was asked to knock off ‘Kutiya’, ‘Haraamzaadi’ and ‘Saali’. Says Pahlaj Nihalani, “We’ve zero tolerance for verbal or physical violence against women. The terms that you are referring to won’t be allowed against women even if the film is certified by us as ‘Adults Only’.”

It might be the best bet in the next 12 months but hardly going to get the buzz associated with BB2. BB2 proves a star is not essential for a big film, neither an entourage of TV shows, marketing, media etc.

However if there is one movie in which I can bet on it is 2.0
A robot today with Alshay Kumar in Chittis role would do really well.

      • Hero or villain doesn’t matter in movies like this.
Even in Enthiran/Robot, the character of Chitti the villain became more popular. Of course that was played by Rajini himself but if one has to chose their favourite, Chitti wins hand down.
Even in 2.0, Akshay role is quite extraordinary and is said to have more emotional connect.
Moreover in any two hero project, Akshay has always outshone the other actor in Bollywood and here he is playing a negative character which is does very very well. So am sure he will match it up acting wise to Rajini.
But frankly if any movie has to compete with Baahubali it has to be beyond stars and their fans. 2.0 seems to be the only project at the moment which is ambitious and attempts to catch up.

Yet if Akshay gets parity you end up in no man’s land. These twin north and south hero films end up exposing more division than doing opposite.

Heck even SRK’s easy route to 300 CR looks improbable now. LOL!

Remembering their unpleasant days on the sets, Kangana said that at that point, they used to fight a lot and that there was even a time when the two had a really intense argument and stopped talking to each other altogether. However, she went on to add that after watching ‘Baahubali’, she felt really proud of him.

After the success of epic drama “Baahubali 2”, three filmmakers have come together to make “Ramayana” as a three-part live action film with a budget of Rs 500 crore.

A source in the know of developments told IANS: “‘Ramayana’ is being helmed as one of the most ambitious projects of India with a budget of Rs 500 crore. The film will bring to life the rich storytelling culture of our country and for the same, the film team is in conversation with a renowned Indian director who will bring this larger than life scripture to the universal audience.”

Three producers — Allu Aravind, Namit Malhotra and Madhu Mantena — have joined hands to make this project come alive. It will be shot in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, said a statement.

The makers are looking forward to deliver a “spectacular extravaganza”.

You dont make Baahubali 2.0 by making scenes look ricker. You need directors like Rajamouli. If any other director that comes close to him in carrying a huge film on his shoulders, then he is Shankar. The guy has done it and seen it before as well.

Vivek shot for daredevil action sequences at Belgrade Air Force base in Serbia and is excited after sharing the screen space alongside South superstar Ajith Kumar in Vivegam. This is not the first time Vivek is taking up the role of an antagonist, he was earlier seen showing off his grey side in a big budget film like Krrish 3.

Last month, the film’s shoot also took place in Bulgaria. A source had earlier informed IANS, “The team had originally planned to complete Bulgaria portion in November last year. However, due to some unknown reasons, they had to return without completing what was planned.”

Vivegam is the third collaboration between Ajith and director Siva. Siva and Ajith Kumar have earlier worked on the blockbusters Veeram and Vedhalam.

Dangal is chasing the 1000 crore mark now with its business in China which should gross at least 300 crore to take it to the 1000 crore mark in all languages. This is a huge number but the problem is that Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion is making everything around it look small at the moment. Any other time Dangal regesering 1000 crore Worldwide would be seen as a mega achivement but its come in the Bahubali 2 wave which had surpassed 1000 crore in ten days. The business of Dangal and Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion till date end of business 10th May) in all languages is as follows.

Dangal – 866 crore (China going strong and should comfortable cross 1000 crore and maybe go to 1100 crore)

Bahubali 2 The Conclusion – 1179 crore ( Strong run in India and Overseas also holding well though not as well as India. Will cross 1400 crore for sure and maybe go up to 1500 crore)

The more interesting battle will in the Hindi version where eventually Bahubali 2 is a dubbed film but could challenge the Dangal worldwide number just on its Hindi format. That would probably be the biggest achievement of Bahubali 2 if its get there as the Hindi contribution from Overseas is limited so it would mean its mainly all from India.

I thought BB2 would be hit, making around 150 to 200 max but what it’s doing in hindi belt is pure magic.

The biggest benefactor of this will be Robot 2.0

    Like

    • You are right. It is more like a magic show than a film! And one more magic show is coming in January.

And how Robot 2.0 will be benefitted?

      Like

    • Doubt Robot will be helped too much. The original did just about 20 in Hindi whereas it was a blockbuster everywhere else. With Baahubali the Hindi has kept pace. Even the original did about 70-80 crores which was remarkable at the time (and did this with significant local competition). Now it could be that because of Baahubali Robot does much more than the first one. But I’d be surprised at anything more than 50 here, if that. Of course I’d love to be wrong here.

      Like

      • Baahubali 1 did 115-120 cr nett in Hindi with Bajrangi Bhaijaan releasing close to it. But the main advantage was the blockbuster run of the film in TV. It gained a following and interest in the franchise through satellite reruns.

I am not sure about the TRPs of Robo’s run in TV, but everyone around me has seen it in TV (though no one had seen it in theaters). And after Baahubali 2, the Hindi belt audience will be warmer towards movies from the south. Add the Akshay factor and we may have a significant grosser in our hands. It may not do 400-500 cr like BB2, but can easily do 200 cr or so.

        Like

        • Baahubali (first one) did more than I thought. On Robot as I said, I’d love to be wrong. Did forget about Akshay (of course one has to remember it’s him under those prosthetics!). I think 100 would be fantastic for Robot. Still it would involve quite a jump after the original’s performance.

On the South the Tamil industry has long been the best commercial one in India, which is to say that from the blockbuster kinds of films to middle cinema to more offbeat stuff they’ve easily produced the best work. Telugu barring exceptions is the kind of industry that produces all the masala films that Bollywood has remade (99% of the time) in the last decade or more. They have other stuff too but for the most part it’s too commercial an industry in the lowbrow sense of the term. Tamil has this too but the spectrum is much wider here. Both industries maximize their audience base (it should be added here that historically TN has the highest number of cinemas per capita, Andhra might not be too far behind.. this is because Dravidian politics understood the political promise of the medium.. even at its height the Bombay industry could never match it in this structural sense..), there is of course a lesson to be learnt here for Bombay filmmakers. Some of us have made this point since the 90s. The Yashraj-SRK major metro/multiplex hits were made possible by shrinking the audience base. Which is why the moment masala became viable again (even if in debased form) it ate up the competition. Or Aamir’s films in different genres did the same. Nonetheless I don’t see much hope for Bombay. On the one hand the South might increasingly start ‘invading’ Bombay and that would be a good thing in my view. But this, if at all it happens, will take time because the existing pool of Bombay talent is simply not connected to the Indian experience in a rooted sense. They’re essentially ‘boys from Bandra’. This is not true of Southern filmmakers and it wasn’t true of Bombay filmmakers once. Similarly Aamir understands many of these same features. You cannot make Baahubali without that life experience and/or rootedness. For years I used to argue here that the multiplex approach to cinema (‘it’s fun to watch but shouldn’t be taken too seriously’) was all wrong. The truth was exactly the opposite. The best masala (even masala comedies) had a cathartic component that had to be taken seriously. We see this with Ghajini (Hindi.. still the best contemporary masala performer in Hindi leaving Rajamouli’s current release) or Baahubali. Specially the latter. You have all the outlandishness of the genre on display here and also all the emotional highs and so forth (at some point though I’ll also offer a note on this where I’ll also be a bit of a naysayer as I was on the first one..). It’s essentially a thrilling experience because it has to be taken seriously. But to repeat the point I think there would need to be a major ‘sociological’ change in the club of Bombay filmmakers or they’d just have to import Southerners to direct their productions. The existing Bombay apparatus will only ever be capable of cloning Hollywood in plastic ways and it will never work.

          • There were films like GOW, Masaan that were quite rooted. Even Udta Punjab was rooted and I watched it on tv twice. For every 5 masala unrooted films, bollywood also had some rooted films like Mukti Bhavan which is on festival circuit.

            Like

          • Yes they were rooted but at the small-scale end and therefore for a niche audience (festival films, as you just pointed out). Most of the time they were also ‘rooted’ in ways that I consider problematic. As an example:

            https://satyamshot.wordpress.com/2012/04/13/masala-mad-men/

on GoW I wasn’t as big on it anyway but I also mention the ‘anthropological’ point here:

            https://satyamshot.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/an-argument-with-gangs-of-wasseypur/

Put differently there’s a difference between showing the rooted and looking at it as an anthropologist. Bollywood does the latter almost everywhere in the last 15 years or so that more rooted films have been made.

The latest controversy is about Akshay’s film Robot. Some are trying to pass is off as a Tamil film starring Rajni when we all know Baahubali proves Akshay will be even bigger with Robot. So you should by all means indulge in controversy! Thanks for your comment..

Can’t disagree. It is a very odd feeling that Hindi cinema has more takers in China than even India for Dangal. I don’t blame Aamir at all, he’s done his best. There is something very deep here that a society quite similar too India’s is rejoicing in ways the Indian and diaspora has almost abandoned. Of course Dangal created records but at same time it’s obviously not reached India like Bahubali. Forget Dangal, the whole industry is being shown up for years of erosion. I find the China story and Bahubali 2 in Hindi story remarkable but disturbing. The trends are great but expose the industry massively.

Nothing really has been learnt. YRF films still sign a non actress supermodel for a role, SLB still throwing money around. The best way to describe Bollywood is it has become a tabloid and lost its broadsheet. News, Twitter, Facebook, media has replaced writing. Even the soundtracks in general are s#it. The South is now cycling and seems the backbone of writing. LOTR has been on TV for 15 years, no one in North had the imagination to imagine THAT world, instead they went Fast & Furious. Plastic for sure.

Not complete Doomsday – I do think stereotypically Indians make money and like to. So someone will take the bull by the neck. There are a few. Only takes one to create a revolution!

          • This is a great comment Satyam….But I do think the potential of the Telugu BO purely in terms of numbers they can put has steadily become more than the TN potential…You have more 100 crs grossers happening there these days than in TN. Telugu Cinema also tends to do better overseas than Tamil ones. But yes the TN cinema caters to a larger spectrum and off beat movies tend to do better there..

            Like

          • That box office difference on the gross can mostly be explained by the ceiling on ticket prices. Specially in multiplexes it makes a huge difference (incidentally a similar thing was introduced very recently in Karnataka). In TN it’s 120 or something, quite low, the one introduced in Karnataka is 200 though it has yet to take effect. Theater owners have complained in TN. The price has been capped at 120 for a decade or something which is ridiculous. A classic class of going overboard to address a problem. Some months ago people in the industry there were pursuing legal remedies but I don’t think anything has come out of it. Most people agree that the prices could be raised 30% or so. In any case there’s a huge difference between these ticket prices and those in Andhra (and now Telengana). Otherwise with TN having a bigger population that ought not to be the case.

Now where I think you nonetheless do have a bit of a point is that Telugu is hopelessly (!) commercial. Whether they’re doing masala or horror or comedy there is a certain lowest common denominator ethic at work. By and large. In Tamil there are those kinds of films but in some ways they’re not as important as they used to be. The bread and butter film tends to be a somewhat smaller one. Often more realistic, with smaller stars or newer ones (who often then become bigger stars). it’s a kind of marriage between commercial and middle cinema even when it isn’t entirely the latter. Yes there are still the big commercial films but the best talents are increasingly not making films in this bracket or haven’t for a while. No matter how well this cinema does it cannot quite show the returns of a big mass production.

            Liked by 1 person

          • Oh ya ofcourse, you are right….I forgot about the ceiling totally…That does explain the discrepancy….It is 120 in TN…
In Karnataka it is 200 and it has come to effect…It is 200 before tax so typically theatres are charging 260 here…I waited for it to take effect before seeing Bahubali last week…But then they have some intervention from HC today which said that the ceiling wont be in effect over weekends. SO it is pretty much of no use now…

          • Some of my controversial thoughts. Why hindi films are not that rooted? I feel that north India was under muslim rulers for many decades and that led to north Indians losing some of their roots while embracing many aspects from those ruled. Many film makers, expecially punjabis have a soft corner for this cross culture which is actually good for the diversity. Punjabi culture mixed with their fondness for everything out there plus nri influence resulted in this rootless wonder called bollywood. This fare is accepted from Delhi to mumbai and gujarat. While south India is relatively insulated and is able to stick to their roots in more ways resulting to more rooted fillms from their side. They did not accept even a rooted film like Dangal wholeheartedly. The exception being Bangalore which is more cosmopolitan. While Chennai Express did phenomenally there because of the theme in a srk film. I have seen many here drooling over urdu shairis but how many south Indians do that?

            Like

          • Given all the Southern Muslim rulers of India beginning with the Nizam it’s a surprise that the same didn’t happen here! Following your thesis. The idea that South India was insulated is frankly completely false. They know this better than anyone else having faced Vedic-Sanskritic colonization in very ancient times. Of course what one thinks of as North Indian culture is already informed by the Muslim conquests. Already an admixture which is a result of this cross-synthesis. I could extend this here but I won’t except in this more general sense. I don’t believe in cultures or civilizations at all. More precisely there are no ‘pure’ cultures or civilizations. these are just nationalist myths. There isn’t, cannot be a great culture that doesn’t borrow from others one way or the other. Sometimes great cultures come about because of cross-pollination, sometimes more direct conquests, and so on. But whatever the means there is simply no great culture, no great history possible without the ‘mix’. Now all cultures of course peddle these myths, all without exception, and all of them are false, also without exception. In the case of India first off it depends on what period one is looking at and/or what part of India. The so called ‘adivasis’ the original inhabitants of India call Hindus ‘diku’ (or outsider) in some of their North and central Indian languages. The Dravidians would agree! The Indo-European ‘Vedic’ invader is the original ‘Muslim’ of this story! But there are all kinds of other influences (the Indus culture, Greek influences etc.. the traffic also went the other way..) along the way as well and way before the Muslim ever shows up. Or let’s take it from the other side. The Tamil language, one of the great treasure troves of the world when it comes to ancient literature is already steeped in Sanskritic influences even then. You cannot find a ‘pure’ Tamil that doesn’t have these influences. Certainly all ‘great’ examples of Tamil culture already bear these traces. I could go on and on. And I could do the same for any other culture that has similar pretensions of purity. These are all self-serving myths and/or nationalist fantasies. Everywhere around the world. of course when you say these things you are likely to be lynched in many parts of the world. Including today India.

            Liked by 2 people

          • Well, I have to think about what you said. South had muslim rulers from Tipu suiltan to Nizam to Kerala. But it did not influence their languages the way they did to the north. Or south Indian hindus adopted veil, mehendi, shairis the way north Indians did. Or even liking for certain foods.

            Like

          • The first irony is that bollywood churns out hindi films from Maharashtra which has a great culture, great language. It did not shift its base even after all those hindi states came into existence. And those states where hindi is mostly spoken have no film industry worth their name while every south Indian language(not dialect) has their own film industry in their respective states. Perhaps this explains bollywood’s rootlessness in relation to its southern counterparts. They lost their roots willingly for greater glory and money.

By comparing Akbar to Hitler, BJP shows there’s no place for even a ‘good’ Muslim in India’s history
It’s not about being the ‘good’ Akbar or the ‘bad’ Aurangzeb – like Pakistan, India can’t accept a minority historical icon anymore.

By comparing Akbar to Hitler, BJP shows there’s no place for even a ‘good’ Muslim in India’s history
    Creative Commons
In August 2015, New Delhi’s Aurangzeb Road was renamed APJ Abdul Kalam Road by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. On the surface, this was done because Aurangzeb wasn’t a very nice man – or so goes most of popular Indian history. Of special note are his policies that supposedly discriminated against non-Muslims and his support for puritanical religion: a special tax on non-Muslims, temple destruction banning music and so on. So terrible is Aurangzeb’s image in modern India that not only Hindutva ideologues but even liberals and some left-wingers came out in support of the renaming.

Now, after Aurangzeb, the BJP has set its sights on Akbar Road, another street in Lutyens’ Delhi. On Tuesday, VK Singh, minister of state for external affairs, publicly demanded it be renamed Maharana Pratap Singh Road, after the Sisodia ruler of Mewar who was defeated by Akbar’s forces in 1576 at the Battle of Haldighati. Singh isn’t alone. The BJP chief minister of Haryana ML Khattar and Member of Parliament Subramanian Swamy have backed him, as has the party’s national spokesperson, Shaina Chudasama – who, in a rush of enthusiasm, declared that Akbar was like Hitler.

Aurangzeb and his great-grandfather Jalaluddin Akbar are the Cain and Abel of popular Mughal history. Even while Aurangzeb is reviled, his great-grand father Akbar shines through as an embodiment of the Idea of India: a broad-minded, catholic ruler who united the large parts of the subcontinent under one flag and also happened to be Muslim. It was a Nehruvian jackpot. That even Akbar is now being targeted shows just how far to the Right India has moved. From now, practically no Muslim can stake a firm claim to be a part of the country’s historical pantheon – not even if you were one of the country’s most powerful emperors in all of its history.

    Secular pin-up boy

Akbar made alliances with Hindu Rajputs, who were the backbone of his army – even at Haldighati, Akbar entrusted his forces to a Rajput, Man Singh (who has his own Delhi road). He had a Khatri, Todar Mal, for his finance minister, whose revenue system more than anything, ensured that the Mughals ruled for three centuries. Theological debates were organised by the emperor at a time when religious-driven prejudice was so strong that most Indians wouldn’t even so much as touch each other for fear of losing their jati and “upper” castes thought most of their countrymen subhuman. Jalaluddin, it seems, even left formal Islam, founding a religion called the Deen-e-Ilahi, angering the Muslim clergy – a grudge held till today by conservative Muslims.

The clamour to rename Aurangzeb Road was pinned on the man being a tyrant. However, in spite of these spades of liberalness, why is Akbar in the cross-hairs today?

The answer is simple: the powerful demand to strike out Akbar Road shows rather clearly that the move to rename Aurangzeb Road had very little to do with the character of Aurangzeb itself. While modern scholarship has shown that the colonial binary between Akbar and Aurangzeb was a false one, making cardboard cut-outs of complex historical figures and administrative systems, at the end of the day, in the public sphere, Akbar or Aurangzeb really doesn’t matter: any Muslim ruler simply has no place in the popular historical imagination as an Indian anymore.

    • @ Sanjana.Good morning. This comment is in response to one of your statements above, that Dangal was no great shakes in South India, except for cosmopolitan Bangalore. Sorry, but IMO , you are so wrong on this count.

My city of Chennai is fairly cosmopolitan since a couple of decades at least; even earlier it has been this accepting open place, hardly a provincial metro. Hindi films do well mostly, sometimes very well. Rooted commercial Hindi films like Udta Punjab and Dangal have done well. Dangal , to my knowledge, ran to full houses for a fortnight ( at multiple cinemas, in Hindi and dubbed Tamil).Dangal then continued its Chennai run through another four weeks, so a total of 5-6 weeks. In smaller towns of Tamil Nadu, dubbed Dangal did very well, running for a month or so, I understand.

In Kerala, especially Kochi, Dangal had a fabulous long run. Mysore too,I understand. Am not hunting and looking for links, since this site is already drowning in China links.😄

Bahubali 2 has of course been this mammoth triumph, racing to glory, bridging the North- South divide — but its success should not mean dismissing Bollywood — as is being done on social media, by lay commenters and media critics alike. At least give Bollywood credit for holding India together in a way. I am a North India bred Tamil, open to Hindi and Southern cinema ( in that order!) — but my Chennai born husband is a huge fan of Bollywood all the way — from fifties cinema and music, to modern day Dangal — and I know a few more like him, in Chennai.

Have not watched Bahubali 1, since the genre does not interest me or spouse, but Bahubali 2 has us intrigued.Need to watch both. But give me small rooted cinema, whether urban or rural, any language, any day.

We watched Satyajit Ray’s Devi, on YouTube, last night. Such a powerful film. Plan to watch Charulata today. All in honour of Ray whose birth anniversary happened a couple of days back.

  132. China week 1 is around 26 M$ without ticket fees. And we were predicting 30 M$ in its entire run. This is truly amazing – as stunning as Baahubali 2 (despite being a dubbed film) displacing Dangal from the highest grossing Hindi film pedestal.

I think week 2 in China is going to be similar to week 1. If so, then we are looking at 50+ M$ in 2 weeks flat! I doubt if it can get to 100 M$. But 70-75 M$ is definitely on the cards here.

Dangal will be the first Bollywood film to gross 1000+ cr WW, by next week. And its well deserved. I doubt if any other Indian film can repeat such numbers in China in near future. Dangal, despite being rooted has a serious treatment (unlike Baahubali 2) that can resonate with international audience. I felt that when watching the film, now the China numbers are proving it right.

Why Is It Unfair To Compare Dangal & Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’s Box Office Collections?
Even though it’s true that Baahubali 2 has made much more business than Dangal, it is not fair to compare the two!
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    May 11, 2017

Dangal and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion have emerged as the biggest box-office giants of the Indian cinema. The two mega movies have raked in massive moolah both at the domestic as well as the international markets. While the concluding part of the Baahubali franchise has zoomed past the Rs 1200 crore mark, the sports drama is certainly not lacking behind and has neared the Rs 900 crore mark.

Following the stupendous success of Baahubali: The Beginning, there were never any doubts that the second instalment would take the box-office by storm. But the unprecedented manner in which its collections have unfolded has surprised one and all. Within the second week of its release, the film has already attained the title of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbuster.

The fact that the SS Rajamouli directed is earning over Rs 17 crore on its second Wednesday (Hindi version), is a testimony to the entire euphoria. The film, with Rs 375.35 crore in its kitty so far, is now on its way to cross Dangal (Rs 387 crore) at the Hindi box-office too and inaugurate the Rs 400 crore club, which the Aamir Khan starrer missed by an elfin margin.

Not surprisingly enough, the comparisons have commenced between the two films with several people saying that Baahubali 2 has defeated Dangal in the box-office race. Even though it’s true, it is not fair to compare the two.

The reason being (and this is without taking anything away from the Prabhas starrer) that Baahubali had already become such an enormous brand with the first edition that the excitement for its second edition transpired from the word go. Also, people waited with bated breath to find out the answer to the national question – Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyu maara?

While Dangal had no such privilege as it came out like a regular film. It did not enjoy a pre-existing buzz and created all the hype and anticipation itself. It bloomed leaps and bounds at the box-office solely on the word of mouth.

However, such masterpieces go beyond just how many crores they have made and get etched out in the memories of the audience forever, so the comparisons do not matter anyway.

Starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, Tamannah Bhatia in lead roles and backed by Arka Mediaworks, Baahubali 2 continues to dominate the theatres.

On the other hand, Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal starring Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Aparshakti Khurrana and Sakshi Tanwar is currently rewriting history at the Chinese box office, amassing a humongous Rs 148.67 crore in just 6 days.

Post Baahubali 2, Prabhas’s next outing will be an out and out action flick called Saaho (Telugu). It will be helmed by a 26-year-old director Sujeeth.

As far as Aamir is concerned, he will next star in Yash Raj Films’ Thugs of Hindostan alongside megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his Dangal girl Fatima. The film will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Dhoom 3 and Tashan fame.

Back To Normal with Meri Pyaari Bindu And Sarkar 3 This Week
    Thursday 11 May 2017 14.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The craze of Bahubali 2 is continuing but its back to business for the film industry with the staple diet this week with Meri Pyaari Bindu and Sarkar 3. The third release Hindi Medium had to postpone its release as there would have been a screen problem with the holdover Bahubali 2 likely to hold 2 screens. If our industry learns anything from Bahubali 2 then it will be a year or year and a half that this learning will be seen in our content but for the time being will be a similar story to what has been seen in the last 3-4 years.

Meri Pyaari Bindu is a rom com which can hold some appeal for the 5 big cities across India but the hero is a huge liability and the film could get such a low opening thats it hard to recover from. A Dum Laga Ke Haisha opened at 1.12 crore nett and managed to recover and get to 30 crore nett due to content but business patterns today are different and that is a very unlikely scenario today. Hawaizaada was 62 lakhs and could not recover at all. Meri Pyaari Bindu has more initial appeal than the films above as there is more for the youth and Parineeti Chopra who has more face value than the actresses in films like Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Hawaizaada. When the heroine has to carry the hero in a film then normally then it is tough.

Sarkar 3 is just passe. This sort of cinema was passe for most of the country when the same director made films like Sarkar 1, Company and Satya and today it is even more pointless. The problem with all these films was that they were duds outside Mumbai / Maharashta and South India then and today even these markets and not keen on this cinema which gives the likes of Sarkar 3 very little hope at the box office. We tend to get the bad imports, there is a S.S Rajamouli there who has never made an outright Hindi film and may never well but our import from the Telugu film industry Ram Gopal Verma is a flop machine with 20 flops as director and the the few that have done well were limited to Mumbai / South. Even a Rangeela with Aamir Khan tanks in places like UP, Punjab, Bihar and West Bengal.

  136. Meri Pyaari Bindu And Sarkar 3 Dull – Bahubali Dominates
    Friday 12 May 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Meri Pyaari Bindu and Sarkar 3 both took a dull opening as Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion continued to dominate the box office. Looking at the morning collections its is certain that the third Friday collections Bahubali 2 in Hindi will be more than the combined total of Meri Pyaari Bindu and Sarkar 3.

Bahubali 2 has more screenings than both films combined and the collections are considerably higher in the morning. Meri Pyaari Bindu has opened in the 15-20% range while Sarkar 3 is 8-10%. The release of the former is mainly limited to multiplexes.

Despite Meri Pyaari Bindu having easily better occupancy in the morning it does not mean than it will get a better first day number as the release of Sarkar 3 is double of Meri Pyaari Bindu. Both films are depending on word of mouth and this is where the restricted release should benefit Meri Pyaari Bindu more as it has more chances to grow over the weekend as so despite this weak opening it can still do something if the growth comes.

Sarkar 3 is in a very poor position with this type of opening. The film is one of those franchises which has no value and only the maker probably thinks its a franchise. The opening tells there is no brand value for the film and despite being the bigger film it will be no surprise if it comes out second best to Meri Pyaari Bindu in long run considering how low the occupancy is on day one.

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion is also the highest grosser in every circuit barring Nizam / Andhra, Mysore, Tamil Nadu / Kerala as these circuits had a very limited release as it was released mainly in regional languages there.
