BOI has no clue whatsoever.Taiwan was a total subtitle release(32cr ATM), in china both subtitle and dub versions r playing. In major cities,80-90% shows r with subtitles.250-300cr wld be done from subtitle version in china. In dono ke 280-330cr ko kaun add karega. They r absolutely hopeless, smashed by Aamir in a huge way.Dangal is the biggest Hindi WW grosser, wld be close to 1000cr.

BOI is charting Filmfare path which finally came to its senses and made peace with Aamir to the extent that he agreed to grace their cover page of a recent issue – but thats it – he is still not ON for awards. BOI with its petty games has pushed the towel and now lost all credibility whatsover just like all those award functions….so don’t take them seriously guys…..

Eagerly waiting for this one just because Sachin’s name is assiociated with it..Sirf naam hie kaafi hai..This one is a sureshot winner at ticket window as well. When there is a ledgend’s name attached to it, people will surely come to watch it.This may teach some lesson to a group of fanatics here and i hope they might understand the true meaning of a real hero here. A real hero is always above cast, color, creed, age, sex etc etc.

  12. Sachin A Billion Dreams movie review: Meet the real Sachin Tendulkar and you would erupt in ‘Sachin, Sachin’ again

Sachin A Billion Dreams movie cast: Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun Tendulkar, Mayuresh Pem, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Anjali Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Sara Tendulkar.

Sachin A Billion Dreams movie director: James Erskine

Thirty minutes into Sachin: A Billion Dreams, you start wondering why on earth are you watching this film in a theatre. This film is such a treat for the fans of Sachin Tendulkar and cricket that it needs to be watched while relaxing in a sports lounge of a medium. It is laced with great storytelling, amazing real time footage, a sneak peek into Sachin Tendulkar’s life. In fact, it has all the right ingredients to make the sports docu-drama grand.

The first time Sachin hits a shot in the film is a glorious glorious moment, it is paired with AR Rahman’s anthem, and if you are not a Sachin fan, this will convert you into one. This is not a movie, you won’t enjoy your popcorn and samosa while watching it. It is a docu-drama and it will bring all your emotions together — you will cry, you will fly, and you will catch yourself cheering “Sachin Sachin” and wiping tears of happiness off your face. Think he has a point. The ‘image’ of Sachin is such a permanent part of the Indian cultural landscape over the last few decades that it would very hard to accept an actor playing him.

It’s impossible and would not find acceptance.

This will do quite well. It’s limited as it’s not dramatised but more documentary style but I can see takers for this. Internationally it can do well.

Not seen a bad review so far probably unreviewable due to Tendulkar’s stature. His deity like love will be enough. He has a ‘real’ popularity not just in India but in any cricket playing nation, it’s not fake. The UK media always were lured by his soft, well mannered nature and obvious cricket skills.

        • Thats a good point from Sehwag.

I also think that the struggle element in Sachins life is not evident on the outside. I am sure he has slogged his ass off but that doesn’t make good drama. There is no coming from poor background and struggle to make debut etc in his life. He hit fame quite early as he made his debut at such a young age.
Also his life is like a open book after he made his debut..
Dhoni’s life surely makes a more interesting movie.

Agree most lovers of Indian cricket have followed Sachin’s career to a degree. The movie will not be particularly surprising in this aspect but I reckon his standing alone is going to surprise with a good response for what is like an extended ESPN special.

        • I think Sachin looks so different than usual actors in the industry that it would be too much of a task to find perfect fit to pull away his role. If you take a newbie who looks like Sachin it has chances to come across as spoof. You just can’t take tall person and only Aamir khan can play but if he was 15 years younger and not now. Also Aamir has become too big and he will overtake the movie and the movie will be about his performance than Sachin’s achievements. So, not a good fit IMO. SSR appeared so closely to Dhoni and that sealed the deal once the trailer came. Its not like if you take Akshay kumar Dhoni movie would have been same. (Yes Akshay wanted to do the role badly but his fav director Neeraj was against that idea).

Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Continues To Shatter Records

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) had another record breaking week as it grossed around 29 crore nett to take its lifetime total to around 487 crore nett. There is not much to say as its creating the sort of history that is rarely seem

The film had competition last week with Half Girlfriend and Hindi Medium and even with both films getting some decent numbers it made no difference to Bahubali 2. It beat the previous fourth week record by a huge 80% and this is a film which has already consumed a lot of business. It is quite likely that the record breaking run will continue in its fifth week. The figures of Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi) till date are as follows.

    Week One – 2,46,47,00,000

    Week Two – 1,42,52,00,000

    Week Three – 68.84,00,000

    Week Four – 29,00,00,000 apprx

  18. Sachin Takes Good Opening – Pirates Decent

Sachin – A Billion Dreams has taken a good opening of 30-35% which is better than most of the regular films. If you take into account its a docu drama then the opening can be called excellent as its not the normal Hindi film.

The opening has basically come because of one reason and that is Sachin Tendulkar. Last year M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story had taken a huge opening but that was a proper feature film which is not the case here. The opening of the film is very good in Mumbai circuits especially Mumbai city and Pune. Bangalore and Kolkata are also very good

The rest of the country is lower but still good or decent. The film has a wide release in Hindi of 2000 screens plus and there is also a dubbed Tamil and Telugu version which could also do well due to the Sachin factor. In Hindi it is going to record a solid first day and it will be basically about holding collections, the coming days will tell if its just Sachin or does the film has some substance.

Pirates Of The Caribbean – Salazars Revenge has also opened to decent occupancy of around 20-25% and should put up a decent first day number. Overall its a good Friday this week as both the releases have surpassed expectations in terms of opening especially Sachin – A Billion Dreams

Salman Khan says Baahubali 2 box-office records don’t worry him
    http://www.indiatvnews.com/entertainment/bollywood-salman-khan-baahubali-2-box-office-records-tubelight-383187

Baahubali: The Conclusion, which hit theatres on April 28, has so far collected over Rs 1500 crore across the world. After ‘Baahubali: The Beginning, we came up with Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Now after ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’, we are coming up with ‘Tubelight’. There is a lot of pressure on the CEO of Salman Khan Films. I don’t get worried so much. It is a phenomenal success and it is amazing.

“I have not seen the film but I will watch it. But it doesn’t matter (box office records) as I think every film has its own destiny. Lets see what the destiny of ‘Tubelight’ is and how much it earns,” Salman told reporters here at the trailer launch of “Tubelight”.

The Dabangg star on a lighter note further said, “They (referring to Rajamouli doing one film in four years) do one film in four years, I do two films in a year and the average is that much.”

Salman’s brother, actor Sohail Khan, who also stars in “Tubelight”, said it’s good if a movie sets a record at the box office.

“It’s lovely when a film does well commercially as it sets a yardstick (for other films). It’s nice that ‘Baahubali…’ did well,” Sohail said. During the launch, Salman seemed emotional while talking about his other co-star, legendary actor Om Puri.

Salman when his brothers are involved, the films feel flat by virtue of Sohail or Arbaaz. The film’s are already handicapped from the start now it’s like giving a walking stick to a wounded dog. It’s not the right instrument.

There are excuses galore – niche film. It’s niche ONLY because the star actor can’t act in a role that requires skill. TZH will have competition if Hirani is ready with Dutt film. Right now he’s incapable in his cinematic trope to break any lifetime records. And he’s not the kind of actor who you could reinvent, he’s best to just play Salman with slight alteration ala Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I reckon the Salman fizz will start to reduce sooner or later in conjunction with what Bahubali has done. That kind of seismic event and returning to Salman feels like a situation much less impressive than expected.

If he was chasing BO records he wouldn’t be making movies like Dangal. In his wildest dream he must not have thought he was making a 400 cr nett or 1500 cr plus grosser. And it will encourage him to keep doing what he is doing. In the end 5-10 years from now when he looks back at his career and the work he has done he would be extremely satisfied. The VFX has improved lot and they can hire best ones from HW and present a top level technical movie along with Indian actors and emotions. The movie wasn’t great on screen but on paper it has gotta be one of the most well written crime dramas and Victor is full on emotional/masala director and I remember him saying that D3 had its own limitation as the series format was set. I think Thugs will be more superior product in every way than D3 including emotions. You have Amitabh and that angle will be there along with Aamir liking the script at 1st hearing!

You rejoice an isolated event yet ignore that Aamir event that happens once a year or 2 years. Your agenda is obvious. Anything or anyone BUT Aamir! In fact your dislike of Aamir I don’t take seriously. It’s more that certain people don’t ‘value’ Akshay same as you. You vent against those. Your like scrappy and Akshay is like Scooby Doo. You’re intertwined to the hip. Any opposing thought against Akshay you cry and whine, draw up lists to perpetuate Akshay Kumar’s superiority (as if anyone believes this). One day you’ll turn on Salman fans if they don’t like Akshay or SRK etc. All this for a star who contributes more to his bank account in Canada than ‘keeping’ the industry going. Industry is paid continuously whether 4 films are made or 1. But Akshay walks away with *4 so it’s obvious what his game is. Mint money for himself while he can, perfectly fine if you ask me.

Stop the lists we know the end game IS NOT AAMIR and will be AKSHAY EVENTUALLY. The process to getting there is thus a waste of time. Just accept that I have said Salman is biggest star who hasn’t delivered biggest grosser and Aamir is a nobody who wants to leave the country with an Indian passport rather than a Canadian one who keeps starring in the biggest grossers because he has designed a formula to release on holidays and work with Hirani and choose good scripts – such fluke decisions!!!

        • Sorry, I don’t think Aamir needs to learn social consciousness from Kamalahasan( (to give him his original name). Acting, yes, Kamal is king. What he lacks these days, is grace. Of late I find him shooting his mouth off in a pretty wild manner. Rajni is more graceful. And Aamir, except for his flat footed attempt at humour during his blog days (the SRK dog joke, which was something so unlike him) has tons of grace. Even recently, on the occasion of Sachin’s premiere, when he was asked about Bahubali 2, Aamir told the media that he had not yet watched Bahubali 2, but he was proud of the film and director Rajamouli, for making a film that had won the heart of the world and all of India; he further added that we need to celebrate the success of both Bahubali and Dangal, not compare them. Beautifully said Aamir.

I have seen Aamir and Kamal chat together, share the stage, all of it during a film festival at Chennai, a few years back, maybe Dec 2013. Aamir spoke with regret at not having supported Kamal enough when he suffered due to the attack on his film Vishwaroopam (I am not mistaken that is the film). Kamal replied that Aamir had in fact supported him through words and Aamir replied , oh, ok, but I should have done more.

What is wrong with Kamal now, these sarcastic words demeaning Aamir and speaking highly of Big Boss Salman in the same breath? Honestly, I have watched very little of Big Boss ( maybe the first year, some bits). But I have watched every episode of Satyamev Jayate. Some of us wish it could be brought back. But Aamir has said that SJ TV show won’t happen for some years, that the team is busy with drought relief in Maharashtra — a five year project planned through 2015, implemented from April 2016. This year, ABP Mazha, the channel that supports SJ’s Paani efforts has in fact during its weekly shows, shown how Aamir and wife Kiran are putting their efforts at ground level, meeting villagers, doing shramdaan, encouraging villagers to take part. If all this isn’t social work, I don’t know what is.

Aamir has repeatedly spoken about creative people and their needed contribution to society — bringing grace to public life. Apparently he once met an American author who in the course of a conversation with him spoke about the need for creative people, like writers, painters, singers, musicians, actors and filmmakers — to bring grace into public life, through their works, words, dealings, public behaviour.

Of course in these social media led times, grace is seen as an anachronism. The more harsh, outspoken and rude you are, the more you are seen as a winner. And so they fall, one by one…Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, Paresh Rawal…don’t let us down Kamal sir.

        • Kamal is one of the greatest actors we have, but he is disgruntled about something, or just frustrated, I presume. Otherwise, saying something like this out of the blue doesn’t make sense. I worry for him, because he is an actor and filmmaker I have the highest regards for.

LS/Sandy: Kamal is a frustrated actor as in last many years – he hasn’t delivered anything substantial and even at the BO – most of his films have been flops – it was ridiculous to see him saying that he had to sell his house to make Viswaroopam – will anyone of his calibre (after so many years in the industry) stoop so low for publicity? Rajnikanth is doing so much charity but he does it quietly…and he is so graceful about it. I think Kamal is a frustrated man also with both the marriages not working out….I liked him in initial few films but in last 1 decade – he has become a self-obsessed man who can do no wrong….

I did not find Kamal taking a did at Aamir. The media post made it look like a dig and then my comment for which every one fell for it.

He just said he is more socially responsible than Aamir.

But the way Bhakts and Bhaktini have reacted, it look Kamal literally abused Aamir. Where and when?

  21. Baahubali Vanquishes Evil Uncle, Then Clobbers Bollywood: Foreign Media

The revenge of a muscular prince, as told in an epic movie from south India, has become the country’s highest-grossing film and is demonstrating the growing challenge that regional moviemaking is posing to Bollywood’s hegemony in the world’s most prolific cinema market.

The film, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, has pulled in a box office record of almost Rs. 16 billion ($248 million) since its April 28 release by appealing to moviegoers across India. Dubbed into Hindi to give it nationwide appeal, the film was originally shot in Tamil and Telugu without the Bollywood-star cast typically essential for a blockbuster hit. Chinese, Japanese and Russian are next as the film readies for global distribution.

As part of south Indian films’ broadening global appeal, the original historical fiction film, Baahubali: The Beginning, as well as the new sequel were shown at the Cannes Film Festival last weekend. India’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at February’s Academy Awards was a Tamil-language crime drama

“South Indian cinema is emerging from the shadow of Bollywood overseas,” said Ramesh Bala, an independent film industry analyst based in Chennai, who noted that global entertainment news publications such as Hollywood Reporter and Variety now frequently write about it.

The original Baahubali: The Beginning was previously the highest grossing film in India and the third-highest grossing Indian film globally, winning the National Award for Best Feature Film in 2015. It told the story of a lost prince who avenges his father’s death by defeating his evil uncle, the king. While that one took time to build its audience, Baahubali 2 took off upon its release. The sequel explains the prince’s royal heritage while telling the back story of how the uncle usurped the throne.

While Hindi-language Bollywood movies made by studios in Mumbai still dominate India’s box office, there’s been a surge in studio investment in regional cinema as the country’s filmmakers seek to tap under-penetrated markets, according to a report by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India.

    Visual Effects

Baahubali 2, co-written and directed by S S Rajamouli, relies heavily on special effects and was produced by Arka Media Works in Hyderabad, a center for software development.

The south Indian filmmakers produce four times as many movies as the six major Hollywood studios combined and draw audiences not only from the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, but also from their diaspora communities in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and the US.

For this reason, the US contributes 85 percent of overseas box office collections for Telugu cinema, according to a report in March by KPMG and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce.

The success of Baahubali 2 may spur greater appreciation for the region’s filmmaking among Bollywood devotees, said Vijay Singh, chief executive officer of Fox Star Studios in Mumbai, which has made or distributed movies in four Indian languages including Tamil.

“Baahubali has shown that a great story, backed by a pan-India emotional narrative and great special effects, can break all the myths that dominate Bollywood, including having a star cast, great music and a special holiday release,” Singh said in an interview, adding that the studio is considering producing in Telugu. “More importantly, we are looking at films that can transcend regions and resonate nationwide.”

    Cheap Seats

Cheap cinema seats are constraining Indian film revenue, which rose 3 percent to Rs. 142 billion last year, according to the KPMG report. Meantime, south Indian language films’ revenue is forecast to grow 12 percent a year to reach 42 billion rupees in 2017, though profitability is low, according Deloitte.

Indian film revenue overall may jump about 45 percent to 206.6 billion rupees by 2021, spurred by the growth of regional cinema, overseas sales and digital streaming, KPMG’s report said. Growth is forecast to spike in 2017, because a number of releases were postponed following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization last year, before returning to normal in 2018.

South Indian filmmakers accounted for fully half of India’s 1,400 films produced in 2015, according to Whistling Woods International, a Mumbai-based film and media arts school.

Baahubali 2 is trying to maximize returns across multiple platforms. Made with a $40 million budget, it’s spawned memes from fans comparing its story to Walt Disney Co.’s The Lion King, as well as a game app. Arka Media Works is working on creating a virtual-reality experience, novels and an animated series based on the Baahubali franchise.

The original film screened in almost 5,000 cinemas in China, said Francois da Silva, the head of Arka Media Works International. The sequel will hit China in July, he said.

“The attention that Baahubali has brought will boost both audience interest and funding for south Indian cinema,” said Bala, the analyst. “The projects may take time, but we may see interest from both Hollywood as well as China in collaborations with regional cinema.”

TOH is free from Dhoom franchise setup and stereotypes. I think it will be a better film than D3, despite Victor being at helm. It is guaranteed to get the biggest initial around when it releases, but will at least need to be a decent film in order to have the legs to get to 500 cr. It will all depend on how the film shapes up.

Right from the days of Sathya, RGV has been the master of presenting the Mumbai underworld in this unvarnished gritty realism, that has inspired many other directors. Even Boyle used such realism for Slumdog Millionaire and credited RGV for it. Its just a shame that he has been unable to develop anything away from this format. Also, all of his work is reality-inspired fiction, with no mention of actual characters.
Perhaps this will be a webseries that is not subject to censors. More power to him, if he is able to find an avenue to showcase actual events/stories of the Mumbai underworld.

  28. Akshay Kumar opens up on what made him pick a negative role in Rajinikanth’s 2.0

Akshay Kumar enjoys an enormous fan following in India. His fan base is only going to increase with the release of his forthcoming movie 2.0. The actor plays the antagonist in the sci-fi starring Rajinikanth in the lead role. The movie is a sequel of the hit Tamil film Enthiran. Surely, Akshay is expanding his territory and how. The first look of the actor from the movie was released a few months back at a lavish event. Akshay looks like a mutant in the first poster of 2.0 and it was spine-chilling. He had revealed back then that he had to sit for hours to get the makeup done to achieve that look. That made us wonder how come an actor like him who prefers no makeup at all managed to go through the process. I mean why would a he pick a film that requires so much makeup in the first place? What enticed him to make a debut in the South Indian film industry? Well, we got an opportunity to ask him about the same recently.

Akshay was walking the ramp for designer Ramesh Dembla at the grand opening of The India Luxury Style Week Men’s Edition 2017 in Bangalore. We asked him about what convinced him to be a part of 2.0, and he said, “The script, Shankar sir, Rajini sir- the whole combination. And I always wanted to work in South. Heard so much about the professionalism. It’s great to be a part of this kind of a film. It’s been long since I have done a negative role. I played a negative role long back, in a film called Ajnabee. And that’s why I did it.”

When asked him what makes him pick a script as his next project, he replied, with a charming calmness on his face, “I choose a role very fast. I just listen to it (script). I don’t have ten people of my company. I just look at it, feel good…good feeling comes, and I choose it. That’s it.”

2.0 is slated to release in January 2018. The release of the film was pushed back as the makers wanted the special effects to be top notch, and there was no question of compromising with the quality of the film. We are totally expecting Hollywood level VFX after these claims. The success of Baahubali proves that achieving that is not a dream anymore. Let us see what milestones will 2.0 set for the Indian film industry.

Apart from 2.0, Akshay will soon be seen in Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. The movie stars Bhumi Pednekar opposite Khiladi Kumar and is a social drama based on the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan. Also he will be seen in Pad Man, a movie by R Balki. This too is a social drama, and has Twinkle Khanna as one of the producers. Pad Man also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. In 2018 Akshay will be seen in movies like Reema Kagti’s sports based drama Gold, and Neeraj Pandey’s Crack. We are looking forward to 2018, already!

Akshay Kumar starrer Jolly LLB 2 had an outstanding television premiere as it garnered the highest TV rating points for a Hindi film premiere. In doing so, the Fox Star Studios production beat the TV ratings generated by Salman Khan‘s Sultan, The Jungle Book, Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil and Varun Dhawan‘s Dishoom!

Here is the list of the highest TV ratings garnered in 2017:

    Jolly LLB 2: 3.83

    Sultan: 3.32

    Dishoom: 2.79

    The Jungle Book: 2.39

    Kaabil: 2.37

Jolly LLB 2 was a runaway blockbuster at the theatres when it released earlier this year. It collected over Rs. 120 crore at the India box office. The movie is one of the most successful film franchises in Bollywood to date with both Jolly LLB (starring Arshad Warsi) and Jolly LLB 2 getting overwhelming critical acclaim as well as incredible commercial success.

Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, says, “Jolly LLB 2 has got overwhelming love from audiences who have seen it at the theatres and now from audiences who have watched the movie on TV. Fox Star Studios is incredibly proud that this high content film has found huge appreciation across audience segments from across the country. The success of the satellite premiere also goes to show that India loves the character of the do-gooder lawyer Jolly and how the presence of a superstar like Akshay Kumar has made Jolly incredibly popular among the masses and hugely scaled up our home grown franchise. Jolly LLB 2 is one of the most successful franchises that exist in Bollywood today, and it gives us a lot of confidence to build more stories that can be converted into successful franchises.”

Sachin – A Billion Dreams had another good on day two as the Hindi version showed growth of around 10%. The film grossed around 7.75-8 crore nett on Saturday. This is not huge growth but considering the high levels on day one even this growth is good as the film could have easily shown a drop. The two day business for the film is around 15 crore nett in Hindi.

The highest a documentary has grossed in the last twenty years is 10 lakhs nett and this film is looking at a 23 crore nett plus weekend in its Hindi format. The Tamil and Telugu versions did not grow that well though Marathi version had good upward trend. The two day business of Sachin – A Billion Dreams (Hindi) is as follows.

    Friday – 7,25,00,000

    Saturday – 7,75,00,000

    TOTAL – 15,00,00,000

Pirate Of The Caribbean – Salazar’s Revenge showed limited growth over the weekend but it is still doing fair business. If the business holds at normal levels through the weekdays it will probably emerge an AVERAGE film. The two day business of Pirates Of The Carribean – Salazars Revenge is as follows

Real stars don’t need this stuff.

I agree with munna. It is not easy to make a bollywood film which will capture tamil, telugu and malayalam industries. BB2 had a bit of Chota Chethan, a bit of Robot and telugu masala served in rajarani style. Even Rajni is unable to crack telugu and malayalam industries the way he does with his tamil movies.
BB2 has opened floodgates of bollywood for Rajamouli. But not for Prabhas.

Rajamouli is a director and can make movie in any language whereas Prabhas is an actor and he can’t speak Hindi even little. So its not like equal comparisons.

Honestly I was thinking other day if a director like Rohit Shetty makes a movie like Singham and take Prabhas as solo hero with all Hindi supporting actors and then dub his lines, it can really work. He’s that popular right now but am sure film makers will not jump to sign him.

REVEALED: This is what Salman Khan is planning for Tubelight.
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    May 28, 2017 – 8:00 pm IST

Come this Eid and we will finally see the release of the Salman Khan starrer Tubelight that has been directed by Kabir Khan. While fans everywhere are waiting for the film with bated breath, we hear that the makers of the film recently held a meeting to ensure maximum success for the film at the box office. However, what was interesting about the said meeting was the fact that the makers of Tubelight have decided to follow the steps that Aamir Khan took for Dangal.

In fact, we hear that the makers of Tubelight held a meeting with the distributors of the film to understand the best way to maximise box office profits for the film. Given this the example of Dangal was sighted where in the ticket prices of the film were kept at a constant right through the first week of release. Interestingly, though Aamir Khan decided to go against conventional pricing patterns wherein the ticket price during the week is considerably lower than what it was on the opening three days of the film. Due to this decision of Aamir, the fixed ticket prices right through the opening week afforded the film a gross profit of approximately crores running into double digits.

Now keeping this in mind, the producers of Tubelight too have decided to follow Aamir Khan’s footsteps and have unanimously agreed to maintain a constant ticket price right through the opening weekend and first week of the film’s release.

Aamir Khan starrer Dangal has been performing phenomenally in China. The film’s performance has proved once again that Indian films have a huge demand in China. After collecting a total of 885 crores till 4th Saturday, the film showed a huge jump over 4th Sunday as it added more 41.76 crores in China. The film now stands with a grand total of 926.76 crores.

Dangal currently stands with an overseas total of 1161 crores. The film’s worldwide collections are 1703.10 crores – a new record set by any Bollywood film.

It’s smashing $150 MM in 4 weeks! Even $200 MM cannot be ruled out if license is extended. The WW coverage will give it momentum in the other Asian markets. This can quite easily go the distance to 2000 CR WW collections if there is connect in Japan for example.

It will be too difficult a landmark without a true landmark film across India like Bahubali 2 with at least a remarkable result in either China or US. The collections in China probably highlight that US market has a lot of juice if the right film arrives especially when Hollywood/British inspired films set in India or on Indians have done well in US.

Sachin – A Billion Dreams has collected 28.80 crore* over the weekend. This is just below Half Girlfriend, a much more conventional and quintessentially Bollywood entertainment flick, which brought in 32.04 crore over the weekend. Considering the fact that this James Erskine directed flick is a docudrama, these numbers are fine indeed. In fact these are also the seventh highest weekend numbers of 2017 as only Baahubali 2 [Hindi], Raees, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Kaabil and Half Girlfriend have done better in theaters.

The Holly Grail Hollywood – Baywatch Tanks
    Monday 29 May 2017 15.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Baywatch which has huge hype (media hype) in India released in its domestic market on Friday and tanked badly. It is pretty much the same scenario as XXX – Return Of Xander Cage which again had huge hype in India but also tanked badly in the States and almost as badly in India. These films are getting huge hype in India as the media believes that mainstream actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have crossed over to Hollywood with big films. This cross over story is loved by the media when in real there is no such thing.

The disastrous fate of films like Baywatch and XXX – Return Of Xander Cage in the US has nothing really to do with Priyanka Chopra or Deepika Padukone but more to do the fact that they are B grade films for the US market. This is where the problem lies as its very unlikely that an Indian artiste will get a good role in a real Hollywood film which has chances at the US box office, just like a big Hollywood star will not get a big role in a potential Hindi blockbuster. The cross over story has been there for years but has never really happened and won’t unless the US box office is cracked. Hollywood is seen as the holy grail by the media in India and probably by some artistes in India but its not going to happen.

The importance of Hollywood by some in the industry can be seen that the flop director of films like Parinda, Kareeb, Eklavya etc etc actually made a film (Broken Horses) for Hollywood which turned out to be the biggest disaster in the history of cinema be that Hollywood, Indian cinema or any other cinema across the world. If we compare to this then Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have actually done very well. Hollywood will remain a dream for Indian artistes until the core audience in the States which makes films like Titanic, Avatar and Star Wars such big blockbusters changes.

Baywatch grossed $18 million over its three day weekend ($22m extended weekend) in US / Canada while XXX – Return of Xander Cage grossed $20 million over its three day weekend and finished on just $44 million.

XXX – Return Of Xander Cage opened at 7.21 crore nett (first full day) in India and finished with 38 crore nett. These are low numbers but even these will be impossible for Baywatch to match.

    • all of this sounds great and I have no doubt they’ll break initial records and might even catch the Dangal gross. all of this can happen with a D3-like run. However they could get to a Baahubali-like total (hindi) or more with the right script. And here it would be a shame to lose this opportunity. But I remain skeptical on this count. What I will say is that Aamir’s sensibilities (in the masala sense) might not have been the best fit for the Dhoom franchise (easily the best script of the three but perhaps ‘too much’ for this kind of frivolous franchise) but they will work well on this sort of terrain. Hoping he’s doing a lot on the script here. otherwise I don’t have any expectations from Yashraj.

He needs to be a chilled-out guy a-la Rangeela in some of the movies….although his get-up for TOH suggests the same and that little clip from SS also suggests that he has got the msg from audiences about this suave-stylish bit….Bachchan and Aamir together itself is such a big USP that they will go for the kill while before release and BO records will stand shattered….VKA as director is the weakest link here…

      • Yashraj and Victor have not learnt from Rajamouli. When Rajamouli wanted to make the biggest budgeted Telugu movie, he didn’t rush to the biggest star and infact Prabhas was not even in Top 5 stars of their industry. He said Prabhas suited the role most and it can’t be made with anyone else and if its well made, it will work with right actors.

Now, Victor always was writing the script keeping Hrithik in mind and just coz Aamir wanted to do this movie and he’s the biggest star now, Hrithik gets kicked out and comes in Aamir. I’m not saying Hrithik is the best choice but you need to stick to you guns for the kind of movie experience you are making, you need certain actors. Hrithik’s tall physique would be far more fascinating to look with the sword fights and all the action along with Amitabh rather than Aamir. Aamir is just pushing through his stardom to do a action spectacle and its clearly not his space. That might impact the overall experience as it did with Dhoom 3. I still feel D3 is still alright project for Aamir but Thugs project screams Hrithik(though he’s not at his peak) or similar actor.

BTW I’m not super excited about this movie mainly because Hindi cinema hasn’t yet proved how to handle these types of films. D3 action was pathetic and yes I wasn’t a fan of D3 overall either. To me it has little to do with the choice of actors and more to do with how well the action scenes will be directed and executed.

Hrithik is not my choice if Victor has written the script for him completely, he needs to stick to it irrespective of getting a bigger star. As simple as that. Even otherwise a huge action spectacle needs a guy with 6 feet tall to look fascinating on big screen and Amitabh-Hrithik combo works well in that space than Amitabh-Aamir. Again, as simple as that.

And thugs need not be tall. Rajamouli succeeded and thats why we think all the right things about BB2. If it had not succeeded, we would be nitpicking about many things. And Aamir snatching the film, let us hear from the other side too. Aamir never said any bad things about Sultan preceding Dangal. He took it in his stride. Only his fans made a hue and cry. And YRF will get the biggest grosser because of the rare combo of bring Bachchan and Aamir. It is business for them. After Dangal’s stupendous success, TOH will gain than lose.

        • Aamir did not snatch TOH from Hrithik or anyone else. As per reports, Victor and his team had issues with Hrithik, with the latter asking for changes in the script which they did not want to do. At that point Aamir showed interest in the script and YRF decided to break the limbo and went ahead with Aamir. Its just a matter of one actor liking a script and the other did not. Of course, one cant rely on Hrithik’s script sense!

Also Hritik may look good in action scenes due to his physique, but he is terrible in drama! One cant carry a film for 3 hours with only stunts unless you are doing something as plastic as Dhoom 2. I cant blame TOH team to jump at Aamir when they had the option.

TOH may be an action-adventure but its likely to be more than just an action spectacle, specially since it is not a dhoom film. Its supposedly strong on drama and emotions and Aamir will anyday fit such a bill more than Hrithik or who have you.

And as I have mentioned quite a few times, I dont have high hopes from Victor. TOH can do a D3 at BO, get the initial records and a somewhat decent follow-through. But it will need a well made and well liked film to cross 500 cr imo. But yes, I expect TOH to be better than D3, how much better that we will have to see. If Victor had made a good film in D3, it would have raced to 350-400 cr during its time.

I think of signing Aamir for D3 like a marquee signing at a football club. I agree with Master on physicality point but then at same time when you go big you kind of ‘should’ bend the script to suit your leads strengths. If you are a bit stubborn you’ve kind of miscast. A football manager rather a great one would change the system to fit around the marquee signing. Otherwise the marquee signing and team look all at sea. a more cunning, cerebral villain would make sense but then you lose the essence of Dhoom which is simply superficial fun and silly stuff. The script should have been used for another film.

On Hrithik – he’s in no position career wise to demand script changes. And JA he’s ok and Mohenjo-Daro flopped huge so there is no written rule that physical presence is a must, it’s a nice to have but if the drama accept fails (precisely where Aamir succeeded in D3), I’ll say the film has more chances of being laughed at.

Whether Aamir has stolen it who knows. He’s good at stealing Xmas, Hirani, China etc maybe he stole Thugs too.

After Airlift, Akshay Kumar to go on a rescue mission again

One can simply say that Akshay Kumar is on the roll. The actor has worked back to back in projects based on real life incidents. Last year, two of his films were inspired by real life incidents including Airlift and Rustom. This year, Akshay is working on another real-life story called Padman, has signed Gold based India’s first Olympic gold medal win since Independence and Mogul which a biopic on Gulshan Kumar.

It seems like Akshay Kumar has been enjoying doing the kind of films based on real life events or characters. While Airlift and Rustom did well at the box office, his upcoming real life inspired films are most awaited ones. Now, we have learned that he has got rights for another such project.

Akshay Kumar has acquired the rights to the story of the Raniganj Coalfield rescue mission (1989). For those who are unaware of the story, 65 miners were trapped below the ground. The hero of the rescue operation was Jaswant Singh Gill, Additional Chief Mining Engineer, who had risked his own life to save lives. He had gone down the borehole in the capsule and organized the orderly evacuation of the trapped miners. It had taken about 6 hours to bring up the 65 miners one-by-one. He was honoured with India’s highest civilian gallantry award Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak (SJRP) for saving the lives of 65 miners, by President of India.

While it is unclear when Akshay Kumar plans to start this project, it will be very interesting how the story will unfold on big screen.

  77. The stand-out scene of the film – an inebriated and beaten up Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan) talking to a mirror – was captured in one shot and that too without the director. Bachchan recounts that day in the book Amar Akbar Anthony: Masala, Madness and Manmohan Desai, by Siddharth Bhatia. He was shooting at RK Studios for two movies – Parvarish and Amar Akbar Anthony – at the same time. Both films were directed by Manmohan Desai. “I used to shoot one scene on one set, rush to the other one, change clothes, and shoot for the second movie. Manji was doing the same. There was a mirror scene planned but nothing had been discussed. He gave me some dialogues and went off. Suddenly, his assistants said, let us just shoot it while he is away. That was it. We set it up and I did it. I knew the dialogues but added a few lines of my own. It was all done in one take.”

After a month, Desai watched the scene at a small preview theatre. He walked out and told Bachchan, “From now on, you will be in every film of mine.”

Dangal becomes the 1st Indian film to cross 1700 Cr in Worldwide
    05/29/2017 42

Dangal Worldwide Box Office Collection in China: Dangal continues is historic run in China in the 4th week. As expected the film has witnessed good jump on Monday. As per estimates, Dangal 4th Monday collection is $7.84 million (50.59 cr INR). This is unimaginable and simply insane stuff.

Dangal box office collection in China has now crossed 900 crores mark. It is most likely to cross 1000 crore in this week itself. The worldwide gross has also crossed the 1700 crore. It is the first Indian film to unlock 1600 and 1700 cr marks. Bahubali 2 is also inching closer to 1600 cr mark at the worldwide.

No doubt Dangal’s Performence in extraordinary in China but for me “BAHUBALI IS THE READ DEAL”..I mean it is making record every single day. Just imagine from day 1 to day 32 every day collection of bahubali is new record. My god ! Insane. Out of the world stuff.

    • Baahubali 2 has indeed come to the end of its run. It will cross 500 cr mark in its Hindi version over the next few days and also cross 1600 cr WW according to its producers. Of course it has done much more than its huge expectations, and its 1000+ cr of All India Nett is going to be really hard to beat in perhaps the next decade.

It has done very well in overseas, but only within the Indian diaspora. Whereas, Dangal has truly crossed over in the Chinese market which is indeed a Big Deal. It will cross 150 M$ today and 1000 cr from that single market by the end of this week.

Many of us has been constantly talking and praising Baahubali 2 over this last month or so. But what Dangal has achieved is indeed remarkable and also deserves its space in this blog. Nothing wrong in that.

    • Bob, i beg to differ but in a different way.

I think Baahubali 2 is above and beyond Dangal, so comparing the two is like comparing Dangal with a 200 Cr netter.

I sense Dangal is not getting its due because despite its record breaking run in China. It has been got space in media like any other hit movie would have got but nothing more than it. If Dangal would have done the same business in USA or UK it would have got more coverage. But what happens in China remains in China and thats a big problem when i see why media is ignoring Dangal’s Chinese massage.

      • Thanks to the transparency of chinese bo, dangal has got more than its due in indian or international media. On the other hand baahubali coverage has been based on dubious producer figures. But disregarding that, both films have got fair share of media coverage with dangal stealing bahubali’s thunder. As for boi they are still sore from dangal’s success in china.

        • Good for you then. I still believe that Indian media narrative would have been far more eulogising for Dangal if the same performance would have happened in USA market.
At the moment for me Baahubali is enjoying extended Honeymoon coverage and rightly so. From day 1 to today each and every record is getting broken. Its just unstoppable probably till Tubelight releases.

This is all pointless. Naveen will hit Bahubali 2 on his Google search, Aamir fans will hit Dangal China.

Overall Bahubali 2 had tons of deserved coverage predominantly Indian based. Dangal’s has been more global. And both are tagged together on global as collections have coincided with Bahubali 2’s global release and Dangal’s China release.

Should be happy for both in different ways. Bahubali 2’s is a much better model where across the board it’s broken records so far. It’s DUBBED film has destroyed Hindi cinema records – the mere thought would be scoffed at years back. 1000 CR nett is ridiculous and will stand for some time. The film is great IMO and it deserves every rupee.

Dangal’s is a polarised model – one that is unique. The mere fact an Indian film can be at the top of all non Hollywood releases in a singular market is just as remarkable. It’s a slice of history unlikely to be created. And happening whilst Bahubali 2 happens just created a transcendental moment in box office for India that is unique. So it might feel like it’s stolen Bahubali 2’s thunder but the latter has shattered incredible myths itself.

Those who like to compare that Bahubali is better it’s fine as I pretty much agree. Because simply put the Bahubali story has worked pan India and if it opens that door first it is better for Indian cinema.

        • I may be wrong here but Baahubali 2 has collected the most in global market as well in every country that it has released. (Yet to release in China)
I doubt it will do even 20% of Dangal’s business in China. So China may remain the only territory where Dangal led. We will get to know in June.

I still stick to the point that Dangal has got good coverage but it would have been far more significant and bigger if it had done same business in USA.

OMG! RGV’s Guns & Thighs trailer with graphic violence and nudity shocks Amitabh Bachchan

Legend has it that when the intrepid never-say-die Ram Gopal Varma showed the 9-minute trailer of his proposed new web series Guns & Thighs to Mr Bachchan, he was shocked. He advised Ramu to scrap the idea of this fiercely sanguine bloodbath taking us back to the time when Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan ruled Mumbai.

But does Ram Gopal Varma ever listen to rationale on restraint? The 6-minute trailer is a revelation. For one, Varma desists from casting any known faces, so that the impact of the gruesome graphic and grisly goings-on is explosive potent and immediate. A gun goes off and a little boy’s face is splattered with blood. Women use sex as a tool to be near power.

For the first time in a web series produced in India, Ramu has shown a fully naked woman in a bedroom with a cop.

The woman says, “When all is done all men want from women is their vagina”. She uses the crude Hindi word for the female gentile.

Elsewhere a cop tells a gangster in graphic detail what the gangster’s father must have done to his mother to give birth to him. The dialogues are written by Ramu in English and duly translated in Hindi. The aim here is to shock with graphic language and lurid visuals.

There is no censor board breathing down Ramu’s neck. But the CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani has taken note of the crudity. “Making a series on the web comes with inbuilt responsibilities. Just because you have unlimited freedom on the internet, it doesn’t follow that you can show and say what you like. The Indian moviegoer has his own inbuilt censorship.”

To some extent Pahlaj Nihalani is right.

Audiences are likely to get turned off by the aggressively lurid tone of the presentation. Guns go off into faces of victims with an impunity echoing the Wild West sagas of Sam Peckinpah… not that Varma’s vision has the heft and power of the great celluloid chroniclers of violence. Not anymore.

Varma quotes Mahatma Gandhi, Socrates, Al Capone, Aristotle, Ayn Rand. Pablo Escobar and Dawood Ebrahim to rationalize the violence. But you know you are watching the blood dimmed tide of a city where things have fallen apart and the centre cannot hold. W B Yeats said it long ago.

One thing is for sure. Ram Gopal Varma can’t go anywhere else with the underworld after this series. Guns & Thighs is a seminal celebration of sadism and semen, steeped in the ethos of a violence that ripped Mumbai apart some years ago. The lengthy trailer has no new insights into the cult of gangsters, nothing that Varma has not already told us. He never seems to tire of the underworld even if we have had enough.

Sachin – A Billion Dreams Has Decent Hold On Monday
    Tuesday 30 May 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Sachin – A Billion Dreams held pretty well on Monday doing around 50% of day one with business of 3.50-3.75 crore nett apprx in Hindi. This film could have dropped badly on Monday due to the film not being in the normal feature film format. The four day total is over 26.50 crore nett and the week will be going to 36 crore nett which is very good.

These are very good numbers for the film and the the production cost of the film is not much being a documentary. But the film has fetched a good price in the market (huge for a documentary probably due to the Sachin Tendulkar factor) from a major multiplex chain which has allowed the producers a handsome table profit. The recovery for the buyers will depend on the revenue of income sources like satellite, overseas etc. These will have to give to over 20 crore for the film to cover. The first weekend business of Sachin – A Billion Dreams (Hindi) is as follows.

    Friday – 7,18,00,000

    Saturday – 7,75,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 9,00,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 3,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 27,69,00,000

Pirate Of The Caribbean – Salazar’s Revenge had a fair hold on Monday of a little under 50% and the film is heading for a first week total of around 21.50 crore nett which is on the lower side but its lifetime business is going to finish higher than many recent Hindi films like Begum Jaan and Phillauri. Its an Average fair if it can get over 30 crore nett. The four day first week business of Pirates Of The Carribean – Salazars Revenge is as follows

    Friday – 4,25,00,000

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000

    Sunday – 4,75,00,000

    Monday – 2,25,00,000

The mega hit Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion which released a while back has been enjoying a stellar run at the box office. After becoming one of the highest grossers on all time, the film has still continued to forge ahead setting new box office benchmarks.

In this special report we take a look at the collections of Baahubali 2 within the Mumbai circuit alone while comparing it to previous releases that have made it big in this territory. Collecting Rs. 182 cr. in the Mumbai circuit alone, Baahubali 2 leads the charts as the highest grossing film in this region. Interestingly, the film which was originally shot as a bilingual in Tamil and Telugu and later dubbed in Hindi has managed to score better than big ticket mainstream Bollywood releases. In fact, Baahubali 2 has surpassed previous releases like PK that collected Rs. 104.21 cr, Dangal that collected Rs. 103.84 cr, Bajrangi Bhaijaan that collected Rs. 90.77 cr, Sultan that collected Rs. 86.3 cr and even 3 Idiots that collected Rs. 79.19 cr.

But with Baahubali 2 still continuing to maintain a grip on the audience’s attention despite newer releases hitting screens, the final tally at the box office is expected to me much higher.

Top 5 grossers in the Mumbai circuit

        Movie – Collections (cr.)

Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Hindi dubbed) – Rs. 182 cr.

        P.K. – Rs. 104.21 cr.

        Dangal – Rs. 103.84 cr.

WHAT? Animation film on Hanuman with Salman Khan’s voice ordered many cuts, given ‘UA’ by censor
    BySubhash K. Jha

Animation film on Hanuman with Salman

In what must rank as a first even by the Indian censor board’s fussy standards Ruchi Narain’s Hanuman Da Damdaar a cheeky revisionist take on the legend of Hanuman, has been granted a ‘UA’ certificate with several verbal cuts. There is no history in Indian cinema of any animation film or mythological drama being ordered cuts by the censor board.

Narain’s Hanuman Da Damdaar which has Salman Khan giving voice to Hanuman, is caught in a peculiar situation. So what gives, Mr Pahlaj Nihalani?

Says the censor chief, “Normally animation films and that too one about a mythological theme would be passed without a hitch. But this film has lots of dialogue featuring children which may offend religious sentiments.”

What the censor chief sees as offensive is nothing but an attempt to make the mythological figure of Hanuman accessible to younger audiences. Reasons Nihalani, “That may be so. But the trendy language applied to religious mythological characters need not be taken in the right spirit by everyone. We have to be very careful about religious content in cinema. Yes, we’ve cut quite a few of the dialogues. But better safe than sorry.”

As for Hanuman Da Damdaar being the first Indian animation film to get a ‘UA’ Nihalani reasons, “Children can come and watch the film with their parents. Problem kya hai?”

I couldn’t agree more with Sanjana. If the distribution was so ridiculous, no indian producer would have bothered to release his film in China. Sorry to say but Master is unnecessarily casting a gloom over a spendindly positive outcome.

I’ve read 12.5% too. It might be a rough deal but the only way to look at it is what is the cost to go into China Vs. What you got back. In any case NO ONE follows box office like a public company. People (except Indians) look at gross collections locally or globally. It is the only sensible comparison taking into account FX rates. All the international reports about Bahubali 2 and Dangal are looking at the top line USD or CR figures. This distribution cost, what cut % etc. only matters to the makers or buyers. It’s like me paying $500 for an I Pad and trying to figure out how all that money moves from retailer to supplier to producer. Dangal would no go to China without a sensible return. Frankly no film would unless a future clause for better deals is in place. People do business for money plain and simple.

And average Joe blogs only cares about cost of a movie Vs revenue generation. Rest is for academic and accounting pleasure. To be highly stereotypical I doubt Indians would do business at a cost for poor returns.

        • Sandy, Master and Munna both are right…There is definitely a cap of returns…We don’t know the exact figure. I have ready 12.5% and also read 25%..And yes that is one of the main reasons people don’t release in China…I don’t think that will change any time soon…But Aamir has broken the proverbial glass ceiling with Dangal…We don’t know if it will translate to better percentages or not but the movie and thereby Indias standing has surely increased in China now…This may translate to better terms in the future or maybe better terms to only Aamirs movie…I suspect it will be the latter…

As a movie starts to make unheard of amounts, producers end up gaining more and more. That has always been the model of film business.

That is the best case scenario of releasing in that 34 movies. If it was flat out buy you hardly get anything back. That’s how the business in China is and it was actually worse till few yrs back but they now they have increased the numbers from 10 to 34 and also the share.

Unfortunately Dangal’s China business has taken a bit away. One should simply be happy for 2 good films. Is that not what matters most?

It’s that Aamir has been a party pooper for some. All types of reasons were thrown out for Chennai Express losing collections due to loss of screens and competition. Here Bahubali 2 is breaking records WITHOUT HOLIDAYS AND WITH COMPETITION! Every day too! To me people who had certain notions or beliefs in how box office works have eaten humble pie but I suspect the real craving was for a Hindi film to achieve it. Bahubali 2 has just been an Oblivion no one expected but wanted. Those people are holding on to little hope and that was Bahubali 2. Dangal came again and has left a sour taste for some.

But 100%, if one likes the films or not there should be no agenda and equal celebrations, slightly more for Bahubali 2 IMO.

I am sure both Dangal and BB2 makers are thinking though….the other supremely rained on my parade. BB2 ran all over Dangal and out of nowhere Dangal came in a week later and started writing history of its own. Shah Rukh Khan, who’s currently shooting for Anand L. Rai’s next recently escaped a dangerous accident on the sets. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, a large portion of a ceiling collapsed on the Film City sets of Anand L Rai’s next starring Shah Rukh Khan injuring two crew members.

A source from the sets revealed that “A prop ladder fell on the makeshift ceiling. The injured crew members were discharged immediately since the injuries were minor. Everybody heaved a sigh of relief that SRK was seated on another side of the set and was unharmed. Shooting was stalled for two days and will resume later this week.”

Meanwhile, the makers had beefed up the security on the sets of the film to safeguard Shah Rukh’s ‘dwarf’ look from getting leaked online. Also, it is expected that leading ladies Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma will join the cast once SRK’s wraps up his main portion as the dwarf with the help of VFX. The shooting of the film will resume from the end of this week.

Between Sachin – A Billion Dreams, Hindi Medium and Half Girlfriend, close to 3500 screens have been allocated. That indicates a capacity to earn around 30 crore per day between each films. Even if one considers reduced rates, the expected capacity collections would be at least 25 crore. However, if Tuesday collections are any indication, the percentage occupancy is not more than 30%, what with combined collections of the three films being less than 7.50 crore.

Sachin – A Billion Dreams is collecting the most with 3.75 crore* coming on Tuesday, Hindi Medium is following next with 2.22 crore (though it is running at just 30% of the screen count that the former boasts of) while Half Girlfriend has gone below the 1 crore mark to bring in 70 lakhs*. This brings the overall sum to roughly 6.50 crore.
Box Office – Sachin – A Billion Dreams and Hindi Medium stay decent, though theaters are running at only 30% occupancy
Box Office – Sachin – A Billion Dreams and Hindi Medium stay decent, though theaters are running at only 30% occupancy

To give good credit to these films, they have at least done better than many other movies that have released between Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Baahubali 2 [Hindi] and then post that. While each of these is a 50 crore plus affair in the making (Sachin – A Billion Dreams has collected 36 crore* so far, Hindi Medium is standing at 41.77crore and Half Girlfriend has accumulated 57 crore*), the need of the hour for Bollywood is a biggie that goes past at least the 100 crore mark.

It’s not easy even for Hollywood films on Dangal’s modest budget of probably $15MM maximum to do business of $200MM, I doubt this kind of phenomenal performance is easy to do again. Even Slumdog Millionaire had a similar budget and multiple times coverage along with Oscars, Jai Ho etc. and did $140MM in US and $375MM globally. Dangal’s final WW total collections are not going to be way off that number by the end.

It will require a film from India that bursts into western mainstream media like Slumdog Millionaire and probably wins an Oscar. A real breakout film, unlikely.

100 CR club is pointless even crowing about, it’s more about 1000 CR now. Tubelight will be judged by media against some lofty standards now! Good luck with that! Not only does Bollywood need to break the all India conundrum, it will need to step up globally otherwise media campaign will hurt some big egos.

Neil Nitin Mukesh to play Prabhas’s nemesis in his next
    BySubhash K. Jha
    May 31, 2017 – 10:08 am IST

It was Rana Daggubatti who took on Prabhas in the monumental Baahubali. It is Neil Nitin Mukesh, the latest Badman in Bollywood who challenges Prabhas in his next project Saaho.

Neil who has been gravitating towards grey and black roles during the past one year, probably in pursuit of a success that has eluded him as a leading man, is said to have a very strong antagonist’s role in Saaho.

Says a source from the film’s creative team, “Though Prabhas is the country’s biggest star he is not going to hog footage in his post-Baahubali project. Baahubali made everyone aware how important it is to balance out the moral conflict. Prabhas’ Baahubali act would have fallen flat if Rana’s Bhalala mayhem did not spread itself out in the plot.”

It is learnt that Neil would have several hand-to-hand combats with Prabhas in Saaho. Says the source, “After Prabhas, Neil was the first artiste to be signed for Saaho, and so far the only member of the cast besides Prabhas. He has a powerful role. Neil is going to be so evil in Saaho that his character would re-define villainy in Indian cinema.”

He’s a bona fide superstar with pretty decent box office results and privileged with soft classifications.

BOI of course has PRDP as Hit and MP as Flop. But going for fair and uniform verdicts – both films can be termed as Average at best. BOI’s soft classifications for its own poster boys are quite shameful (and blatant too).

    05/31/2017 0

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has completed 4 years. The film was directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar.

Upon its release, the film stormed the box office by taking the highest opening on non-holiday and record weekend of all time. It went on to become the highest grosser on non-holiday. The film collected 188 crore in its lifetime run and was declared a blockbuster. At that time, it was the third highest grosser of all time only behind 3 Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger.

YJHD is also the highest grossing film in love story genre. It was kind of a trendsetter and since its release, there have been many attempts to make youth-oriented love stories though none of them was as successful as YJHD was which still remains one of the most popular films of the current era among youth.

Ranbir Kapoor became the darling of the multiplex audience after the release of YJHD and is unarguably the biggest superstar after Khans, Hrithik, Akshay and Ajay. He is again collaborating with Ayan Mukerji for his ambitious superhero film Dragon which will go on floors in November this year.

In Prabhu Dheva’s Lefty, he plays a man who does everything left-handed, in Sanak, he plays a man with a bad temper. And in Priyadarshan’s next (tentatively titled Bachchan Singh), he plays a man who can get anything he wants when he claps his hands! He also plays a corrupt, paan-chewing cop (like his father Amitabh Bachchan did in Shahenshah, years earlier), who suddenly discovers he has superpowers.

Priyadarshan confirms, “We start shooting for the film from November this year. The film has been written by Rumi Jaffrey and produced by Rajat Rawail. It’s a fantasy fiction film, humorous, something along the lines of Mr India and The Mask.”

Priyan shares more about the film. “Before the interval, Abhishek plays a corrupt cop and then turns a saviour of sorts with powers. He has the power of clapping to get what he wants but he realises it later. It’s my first masala film. While we have tentatively called it Bachchan Singh, we may change the name later,” he adds.

  137. WHEN THE INTERNET KILLED SHAH RUKH KHAN, AGAIN

On Wednesday, Shah Rukh Khan’s team began receiving frantic calls from the media, police personnel, fans and friends, enquiring about his whereabouts. A European news network, El Pais TV, had carried a ‘breaking news’ story which said, “Tributes have poured in for Indian film actor, producer and television presenter Shah Rukh Khan after he was killed along with seven others when a private jet he was travelling in crashed. It is believed to have been caused by turbulent weather. He was travelling in a Gulfstream G550 jet with his personal assistant and others to Paris for a meeting. The death of Shah Rukh Khan has stunned the Indian diaspora worldwide.”

The news made Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police, Deven Bharti, spring into action, as he contacted SRK’s management and was informed that the reports were untrue and that the 51-year-old actor was in Mumbai, filming, and had not been to France or anywhere near a plane recently. Meanwhile, a few policemen arrived at SRK’s Bandra home, Mannat. “This isn’t the first time that Shah Rukh Khan has been at the receiving end of a death hoax. But this time, the gravity of the situation was worse since the news made it to a WhatsApp group of Mumbai’s top cops. It had already been picked up by legitimate French and Indian websites. SRK’s team had to field calls all day,” a source told Mirror.

Writer-filmmaker Rob Cain, who has written about several SRK films, specially those that have released in China, used a Mark Twain quip to comment on the incident, “The reports of his death have been greatly exaggerated,” he said.

Box Office: Sachin – A Billion Dreams, Hindi Medium – Wednesday updates
    By Joginder Tuteja
    , Jun 1, 2017 – 9:16 am IST
    Wednesday updates

Though Sachin – A Billion Dreams is seeing drops coming on the weekdays, the collections are still fair. Reason being that the drops are in comparison to the good numbers that it managed to collect over the weekend. However, if one would have suggested such weekdays numbers before the release of the film, it would have been considered rather fine. After all, for a docudrama to collect Rs. 3 crore* on its sixth day is not a bad deal and the overall collections too have reached Rs. 38.75 crore* already. The film is set to go past Rs. 40 crore mark today and then its journey would begin towards entering the Rs. 50 Crore Club.

As for Hindi Medium, it should go past the Rs. 50 crore mark over the coming weekend itself. The film has been staying stable in its second week too and has now accumulated Rs. 43.98 crore already after bringing in Rs. 2.21 crore more on Wednesday. While Rs. 45 crore would be crossed by tonight, it should be quite comfortable for the film to bring in Rs. 5 crore more during the weekend so that it enters the Rs. 50 Crore Club.

There is a plethora of new releases this weekend. However the only one that should impact Sachin – A Billion Dreams and Hindi Medium is Baywatch. Though fall in collections for the former indicates that the holdup may be a little tough in the second week, Hindi Medium should continue to chug along since it is a set film and is doing well in a world of its own.

Half Girlfriend isn’t getting much of a showcasing in the third week and would be seeing a show or two in select multiplexes. It would just about manage to touch the Rs. 60 crore mark in its lifetime run.

Box Office: Baywatch to lead the show despite seven new Bollywood releases; to open in the range of Rs. 5 to 7 crores.
    By Joginder Tuteja
    , Jun 1, 2017 – 9:12 am IST

There are seven new Bollywood flicks that would be hitting the screens this weekend – Dobaara – See Your Evil, Dear Maya, Hanuman Da Damdaar, Sweetiee Weds NRI, Mirror Game – Ab Khel Shuru, Flat 211 and Bachche Kachche Sachche. However, it would be Hollywood flick Baywatch which is set to see the biggest opening day amongst all. As a matter of fact it won’t be surprising if the collections of the film are more than the combined collections of all aforementioned new releases.

The film, with Priyanka Chopra as a major attraction (at least for the Indian audiences), may not have done well out there in the West on its release last week. However in India it should take a fair opening since it is the only major notable release of the week. Also, there isn’t much of a competition from the releases of the earlier weeks either. The film should open in the range of Rs. 5-7 crore which should be a reasonable beginning.

Amongst the Hindi releases, Dobaara – See Your Evil should have the biggest opening numbers when compared to the rest. The film has real life siblings Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem in the lead roles and one just feels that the promotion and marketing could have been stronger for this remake of horror flick Oculus. It would be a fair achievement if the film manages to go past the 1 crore mark on Day One.

Dear Maya is another release with Manisha Koirala making her comeback as a central protagonist. However there hasn’t been much awareness created around the film and hence it would be critical acclaim that would eventually help its cause. Hanuman Da Damdaar is an animation flick for children and may just pull in some segment of audiences due to ongoing Summer holidays. As for the rest, one waits to see the kind of release that they eventually get in theaters due to overflow of films in theaters.

This is official. Dangal’s raced past yesterday’s $1.8MM today. Its heading for 2000 CR, it’s opened all the club’s within days of BB2 and now is opening new ones.

Bahubali 2 will need China now, until and still it matters little but now it’s an important market for it to do big business in.

Let’s hope it does because at least then the most populated country in the world will get some coverage inside India from certain quarters.

        • There was a lot of noise once BB2 started crossing 800 cr, 900 cr, 1000 cr and up to 1500 cr. It has been amusing to see Dangal catching up with all those milestones and now setting new ones with 1600 cr, 1700 cr and with more to come.

With 1000 cr in its kitty from China alone, it is setting all sorts of benchmarks in the overseas that will be a really tall order to overcome. Not to forget it is still the highest grosser from Bollywood in India too.

There are only 4 Indian movies that can release in China in one calendar year. After Dangal, BB2 and Tubelight are booked to release in China in 2017. Only one slot remains and Aamir said he is already trying to release Secret Superstar in October. Out of these three I will put my money only on SS to work in China, specially after all the limelight Aamir has got with Dangal. Not sure of BB2 and TL.

However this silly “not performed in the language it was made” argument belittles both these colossal Indian movies. And how do they come up with a 525cr share for Dangal? BOI needs to quickly get its head out of its backside.

They make it sound like a completely different movie has been made in a diff language! its the same freakin movie. Just dubbed with a diff language. Surely, dubbing cost cant be more than 1-2% of overall production cost. These guyz have gone bonkers with Dangal/BB2.

          Like

        • I think one can pursue an agenda to the point of absurdity. They’re only making themselves look more and more foolish by the day. Less believable on just about any claim. Some of us have noted their commentary for years as well as the fudging of the numbers (lowest totals for certain stars and so on.. or selectively reporting best performing centers or shows for a film..etc) but they’ve become truly unhinged in the last few years. partly because with Salman on top again they felt they could run a number on Aamir. They talked about less volume being a problem and what not (by that token Rajnikant shouldn’t be the topmost Tamil star!). They played all kinds of games and have forever. Wth Baahubali and Dangal the entire history of their commentary stands deconstructed (for that matter the same happens to those who claimed for years that a film couldn’t do much more than 100 or 200 or 300 or whatever and hence even if a film did 70% of that in week 1 that was fine because those were the limits). Baahubali has been historic, obviously it’s not easy to repeat the success of this film by definition. However I’d still say that 500 crores is a very achievable target for a big enough film. TOH certainly. But then it also comes down to the script and the director. Rajamouli has the vision, the imagination. A compelling script but also all the right masala touches. I loved the first fight in Baahubali 2 where the girl is revealed bit by bit as her sword slashes through all kinds of fabric. This is classic masala but it’s a sensibility that can’t be taught. You need to have it. With TOH hopefully Aamir works on the script enough. But in any case this is where all the big Bollywood stuff falters. Again some of us have been saying it for years — 99% of big Bollywood grossers are underperformers. And Aamir has been creating benchmarks in films like PK and Dangal which are hardly Baahubali-like masala. Meanwhile Salman who is doing much more mass-oriented stuff underperforms all the time. Even now no masala film in Bombay has matched Ghajini’s opening and trending pound for pound. And the only film that has done better irrespective of genre is 3I. In each case a film that breaks the initial record by a huge number and then at least doubles its week 1 number. None of these other films have done this. So the clues were always there that a film could do this. But Bollywood directors don’t have the sensibility nor work with the scripts that can do this. And so they’ll keep underperforming, at least when Aamir isn’t part of the deal. Anyway to get back to the BOI point I am not offended by what they say at this point. One feels pity for them.

On Dangal’s China number this is one of the most extraordinary box office moments for a film in Indian movie history. It’s a stunning number. Whether other films can take advantage of this remains to be seen. Certainly the subject has struck a chord over there. But still barring this sort of record some very healthy totals ought to be possible for the right films.

A huge issue for India must be # of screens and ticket prices. Dangal’s released on more screens in China alone than rest of world. India’s size is just smaller than China not multiples like US. The prices in India must be multiples of China I’m guessing so it’s a limiting factor. Between Dangal and Bahubali 2 you got every box office debate ridiculed to the point of ‘i told you so’.

Less volume is a good thing. Numbers speak for themselves. What Dangal will end up doing is the equivalent of like 3-4 Salman films, 6-8 SRK films and I need more hands for Akshay Kumar WW! Bahubali hindi crossed that number by saturday morning after the friday release. The screens are expanding at a rapid pace but are no where near what they should be in a movie crazy country like india. Once we reach the number, even the 100 CR Bahubali all india number will look puny when the truly big budget movies release. It will take some time but it’s coming!

Avalanche of films this week threaten to choke the theatres

Stifling movie theatres with two big Hollywood franchise films and a barrage of experimental, semi-experimental Hindi films most of them directed by debutants, the movie business promises to get very sweaty this week, what with the sultry Priyanka Chopra in Baywatch competing with the global sex symbol Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman.

The foreign press has already declared Baywatch a dud. But the film’s Indian distributors Viacom 18 Motion Pictures are undeterred. They plan a series of paid previews on Thursday evening while Wonder Woman chooses a straightforward Friday release.

“We are very confident about our product. Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman are international phenomena. They don’t need that extra push,” says a source from Warner Brothers.

But no extra push will help the torrent of Hindi releases this Friday. There are 7 Hindi releases top lined by Prawaal Raman’s Oculus remake Dobaara which has been praised by the director Mike Flanagan who directed the original film.

In Dear Maya debutant director Sunaina Bhatnagar gives Manisha Koirala a role to sink her teeth in, while another female director Ruchi Narain (a former Sudhir Mishra protégée she made her first film Kal many years ago) claims a slice of the Friday pie with her cheeky revisionist animation version of mythology in Hanuman da Damdaar which features Salman Khan’s voice as Hanuman.

I think it will easily add another 150-170 cr in its second month in China. So agree with you that the difference will be in 350 cr range after China run.

Dangal’s advantage is more. Western and Asian media have picked up the story so it’s future releases have a lot of substance to collect well. It’s free WOM. Bahubali 2 has free publicity from most these articles as the films have a box office bond – Bahubali 2 will need good success in China otherwise no chance it will reclaim it’s thrown.

If secret superstar has a simultaneous China release Aamir can run riot this year at box office. It’s social cinema which seems to be in thing in China at moment. That film with a simultaneous release could be #1 Bollywood of the year IF on or near the level of TZP reception.

          Like

        • Secret Superstar is the right movie to carry on Aamir’s narrative in China imo. It will benefit immensely from the good-will generated from Dangal. And thematically it is also about women empowerment in a patriarchal society – a follow through of Dangal’s women empowerment angle.

Dont think Aamir having a supporting role (instead of leading role) is going to matter, as long as the movie turns out to be engrossing. The treatment and sensibilities are expected to be in the lines of Dangal.

Dangal’s numbers in China are phenomenal and cant be replicated, but SS imo has a chance of a very healthy total in China like PK did (maybe more). TZP in today’s money will be around 200 cr. A similar reception (which was stupendous for a small movie) can indeed make SS the #1 WW grosser from Bollywood this year!

There is also the Malayalam period film that Kunal Kapoor is doing. Bollywood and its current crop of 100 cr stars should look out for this invasion from the south.

Salman revived his sagging career with a bunch of south indian remakes. Aamir’s best masala movie is a south indian remake. The south industry has potential and simultaneous dubbed hindi release can give them their due.
