Not much in the teaser but hopefully the Muslim angle wouldn’t become controversial.

  4. Promo looks fine except Aamir Khan. I think he always overdoes when he has to do such characters like that ridiculous song in Delhi Belly ( I hate you like I love you). Obviously he needs to be over the top in such characters but still he crosses that ‘balance ‘and makes it appear unnatural and mechanical.

  7. This film is supposedly more serious than the whackiness of Aamir at display here. It deals with an abusive husband who also does not allow his daughter to sing. The story is about the struggles of the wife (to get a divorce) and daughter (to have a singing career). It is one thing to make a film on patriarchal societal norms and women empowerment in a Hindu backdrop. But this will taste more muddy waters with a strict muslim backdrop.

Also, after all the BO pumping of Dangal, this will be a litmus test for Aamir. He took a serious film in Dangal to unimaginable heights. How far can a similar endeavor go at BO here? Of course this is not going to be an art-house film like Dhobi Ghat; its more of a musical drama with a social message. It is likely to be family-audience friendly, otherwise they wont have pushed it for a Diwali release. And Aamir has a strong supporting act here (‘pivotal’ by his own words) which he described as ‘daal mein tadka’ and is reportedly 40 mins long. No way, can an under-performance here be shrugged off as ‘not-an-Aamir’ film.

On the other hand, it has v low costs, so losses wont be there even if it does not work well. I am more interested to see how this fares at the BO than TOH. As a film, I am assuming we will have a good one here.

    • And Aamir reportedly plays the role of a musician/popstar who is also an alcoholic divorcee. I guess his whacky comedy will be used to lighten up a more serious social message against communalism. Here is a report from 2015 during its pre-production:

      ——————————-
The film revolves around a teenage girl who saves her mother from her abusive father with the help of an alcoholic divorcee. Aamir does not play the father. Instead he plays the alcoholic divorcee.

It’s a story of dreams and aspirations. It is a very inspirational film. The film revolves around a Muslim girl and how she battles the odds of communalism to become a superstar. It is tentatively titled ‘The Secret Superstar’.

another TZP kind of good film for sure – BO-wise, I will bet for 200-250 cr being an AKP film…..China can astound again with big nos……but then aamir has a neck of breaking all such assumptions so SS can also go above 300 cr….

      • At the moment sites like Bollyarena and Indicine are predicting 60-80 cr lifetime for this movie.

I think this can easily do 100-150 cr and can perhaps go anywhere from there if the content is good. This is really a small budget film, so big numbers here would mean huge profits. This film has not been picked up for distribution by any studio yet, so AKP will perhaps distribute this film themselves.

Further, his look in Dangal was so good and captivating. Here he looks too whacky like Shahid Kapoor in Udta Punjab.

    • I think Aamir is pulling off the wackiness quite well here (as far as the promos go). To his credit he does not come off as ‘cocky’ while he is at it. I found his antics quite funny here.

Music is always a vital part in a musical drama, as you said. So hopefully we will get a good album.

My concern is the hard-hitting message behind it all – a stand against communalism. Aamir of course is wise enough to not overdo it and will hopefully tone it accordingly (like they did with PK). But its still a v sticky wicket and can be controversial if they are not careful. TZP had a more ‘easy’ and less sensitive topic in dealing with dyslexia.

And TZP was a true Sleeper Blockbuster. It went on and on over weeks to that astounding total during its time. Will be very difficult to replicate that.

  9. I hope AKP takes care to cut a sharp trailer and attaches it with TEPK prints.

TEPK is also a small film with strong social message (although more politically friendly) and the timing will also be appropriate (approx 2 months prior to Diwali). And BJP may make it compulsory to watch TEPK; in which case the reach of the trailer will be maximum!

Jokes apart, looking forward to its trailer. Would love to see small-budget films with social messages like TEPK and SS to give BO competition to big-budget meaningless cinema like JHMS and Golmaal Again respectively.

You are not mentioning Tubelight and TZH when talking about big budget films!

      • No one is challenging Salman. He is getting a free run during 2 most prominent festivals this year. I think Naveen was talking about Padman releasing this Christmas. If that happens, it may be a similar scenario of content vs meaningless cinema. Hopefully Padman will be a good film.

Tubelight may under-perform going by the promos. But Salman on Eid has the religious advantage that may somehow get it to 240-250 cr range and thus be a safe film. I doubt if its going to make 300 cr as many are predicting. TZH with the sequel factor and Christmas release should cross 300 cr comfortably.

Well, now documentaries are being made into films with a big star! An interesting phenomena! Akshay, the messenger! They should also make film about pan stains disfiguring walls, staircases and every public place. And use of plastic which clogs the drains and affects environment. There are so many social issues that has to reach the public and I feel Akshay is the right person at the right time.

          Like

          • Let Akshay do his bit, what is the problem in that? He is not challenging Aamir anyways. Whatever TEPK/Padman collects, I think Secret Superstar will do more than that.

Neither SS teaser or TEPK trailer look like documentaries. TEPK looks more like an entertainer. It has given away the whole story of the film, but Aamir films usually dont do that.

          • @Sanjana – I am not averse to the idea of Superstars lending their time to act in documentaries on social issues. Aamir kind of did a similar thing with his SJ TV series format and it was a good effort. In fact, prior to his debut in Ketan Mehta’s Holi, Aamir had acted in quite a few documentaries with FTII students (apart from working as a assistant director in films).

There is no harm if Akshay actually lines up a few documentaries in various social issues apart from his regular films. The only problem is that even if such documentaries are made and released in big screen, it wont get many audience. Only a docu on Sachin can perhaps work in India at a commercial level. Akshay is in fact being smarter in weaving commercial entertaining films around such issues.

Btw, Aamir has started talking about Secret Superstar at length in his interviews and is even keeping the BO prospects open for this film. He also subtly brought TZP into the discussion. Good that he is owning the movie, specially after the media treating this film as a step-child with emphasis on him playing only a ‘cameo’. From the inception of this project this has not been a guest appearance but a supporting role (apart from being the producer).

  11. I think this film needs a bit of promotion and the marketing team needs to get moving. They released the teaser last december but it has been quiet since then. May be too early for the theatrical trailer, but at least they can release a couple of first look posters with the new Diwali release date.

The teaser had done its job in introducing the main theme. It ends on a high with Aamir’s funny dialogue “Pasand aaya toh like karo … Pasand nehi aaya toh taste change kar lo”. Now they should cut an interesting trailer. Had loved Dangal trailer, it was easily one of the best ones of last year.

  13. Bollywood has taken up women empowerment in every possible way! Dangal dealt with women playing men’s sport and becoming international champions in the backdrop of a patriarchal society. Whereas, Secret Superstar deals with a girl following her singing aspirations against a tyrannical father and communalism, while her mother struggles for a divorce. Aamir has thankfully taken the ‘inspirational’ themes of women careers and dreams. Such cinema has longer shelf lives imo.

Akshay on the other hand has gone for the ‘health’ route of women empowerment, focusing on open defecation (TEPK) and menstrual hygiene (Padman) for women. Very topical subjects and Akshay is known for his comedy, which can be used very well in satirical tones.

Aamir and Akshay has kind of formed a ‘twin’ here with their current set of social cinema. Dangal worked because of its content. Hopefully these other films will also work based on good content.

  14. I think the official release date is going to be Oct 13th. Diwali holiday is on 19th (Thursday) and there will be holidays around it on 18th and 20th in some states (restricted holidays). Bhai Duj will fall on 2nd Saturday, so that should prop up business on second weekend.

APK and Zee should lock the date and release a first look poster. Then go all out for a simultaneous release in China. If they can manage that, then there is potential for WW gross to be higher than the likes of Tubelight, JHMS or Golmaal Again.

As Zee Studios is co-producing this film and also distributing it, there will be no pre-release business involved (Zee is likely to keep the satellite rights), except perhaps sale of music rights.

  15. According to Forbes, Dangal’s China distributor E Stars is also going to distribute Secret Superstar.

Its upcoming slate includes Advait Chandan’s Secret Superstar, which traces the journey of Insia, a 14-year-old girl from Vadodara whose dream of becoming a singer changes her life and those of everyone around her.

    • The release of BB2 and SS are going to be the real test for Indian films in China market. The success of Dangal is freakish. But SS is again in similar territory (story about a girl from small-town India and thematically revolving around women empowerment) which may again connect with the Chinese sentiments about their urban-rural divide and patriarchal society. Even a 30 M$ haul will be great here given that its budget is bare minimum (around 3 M$). AKP are also likely to negotiate a better producer cut here after Dangal success (IF it is a direct buyout like Dangal).

BB2 on the other hand has a Telegu-masala treatment and lacks realistic sensibilities even in a fantastical backdrop. Its VFX is also not up to the mark by international standards. I will be v surprised if BB2 clicks. Its predecessor also did not work in this market.

  17. Some quick updates on Secret Superstar:

Promotions likely to begin from 15th Aug. It is targeting a release screen count of 2000 approx (Golmaal Again is likely to get double this amount of screens). And Aamir will be tied up with TOH shooting schedule during October, so may not be available for his usual promotional interviews before release (SS marketing is trying to work around this).

    • It will be a bummer if Aamir does not come out to promote SS. Its not just a supporting role, but his home production too. Usually he gets fully involved with the marketing and promotion of his own productions, so it is likely that he will find some ways to work around TOH schedules.

Even without Aamir promoting, this is unlikely to struggle for recovery as it is made on a v controlled budget (15-20 cr). Co-producer Zee Studios will distribute it themselves. Zee recently distributed Mom successfully over 1100 screens. It should not be a stretch for them to distribute SS over 2000 screens (mainly plexes).

With such a release strategy and hopefully with Aamir on board, the marketing team should promote this with a target of 15 cr opening day (maybe a bit more if it releases on the day of Diwali). The movie can speak for itself from there on. If it clicks, it can be one of the biggest hits of the year in terms of ROI. Would be a solid Hit if it does 100 cr.

It is still an amicable situation inspite simultaneous release with Golmaal Again, as GA will easily get 3000-4000 screens. Rohit Shetty himself is quite pleased with the situation and there is unlikely to be any bad blood between the teams.

At this moment, there seems v limited interest in SS even though the teaser been released last December. But hopefully that will change once promotion starts.
