BOI is now trying to snatch the limelight away from Dangal with their rant on how it means nothing for the industry. While there may be some truth in that, but it is still encouraging others to try their luck in China. BB2 is already gearing up for China release and even Sultan may get released there, if not Tubelight. It is the second biggest market for cinema after US.
Aamir Khan films are likely to have big advantage in China over others. But that effect can only be gauged properly after Secret Superstar and TOH’s run in China. Dangal meanwhile is inching toward 1200 cr from China after amassing 300 M$ record and becoming the 5th highest non-english grosser in the world.
Whats deciding criteria which are the 4 films that will release?
TZH is a Christmas release. What if 4 films release in China by the first 4 months of the year itself? Does someone know how this even works?
Not sure of exact procedure, but the distributors needs clearance from the government (where Tubelight may fail). It seems to be first-come-first-serve basis to fill up the quota after getting govt go-ahead.
Then they will have to line it up for 2019 release in China. Its same for Hollywood films too. Most studios try to get the govt clearance well ahead of their release, otherwise the release gets delayed. That is why simultaneous release in China is a big deal.
Merit is rewarded to those with consistency. Aamir’s track record in China is consistent. Other films need to step up or shut up. Other fan stars too.
It’s like unrewarding SRK for his feats in UK and US in late 90’s or early 00’s. His dominance was crystal clear, it’s other films and stars that were non performing in ‘general’.
Even though collectively Aamir and Salman are taking out all of SRK’s overseas records, history or chronological history will always show he was first there.
History will always show Uncle Aamir as a kind of pioneer for the Chinese market if it becomes big for Bollywood in general, he’s the one opening the doors. The triumph is not small. The discerning attitude is dumb. I assure you any other star like Salman, SRK, Hrithik or Akshay – all your comments would be different.
Last few films of both SRK and Aamir have released there. That means atleast SRK/ Salman/ Aamir can get a release there. There are talks that the quota system may be enlarge in the coming years. So definitely it favours Bollywood. If the quota is increases to say 7-8 films than major big canvas movies of a year would be accomodated.
A 25-30 million dollars in China market is a good total. That will increase the overseas avenues for Indian filmmakers which has a limit now.
25-30 million dollars from china is a huge deal as far as indian biggies are concerned. Srk/Salman films do at max 25 M$ total in all overseas territories these days.
The big bollywood films will get released in China despite the quota system. The problem is with small films (unless its a secret superstar kind of deal) that will get a raw deal and no release in China. But then how much did Srk’s Dear Zindagi do overseas?
Akshay is the one who really loses out with the China deal. His films wont stand a chance to even release there, except perhaps a rare 2.0.
I think Boi views are quite well balanced this time. First time their view is making some sense. They indeed gave credit to aamir and Dangal . Other points are also not to be ignored.
I kind of agree with their main claim, but their pessimistic tone is a bit pre-mature. There was a point in the mid-nineties when SRK’s films broke out in US/UK. His romcoms used to make a fortune in overseas and slowly established a NRI market for bollywood films. It did not happen overnight after DDLJ, but happened over a span of time, with the initial years heavily skewed in favor of SRK. A similar trend may happen in China, its too early to be negative at this point.
Personally, I dont think BB2 is going to set China BO on fire, but have my hopes pinned on Secret Superstar. I doubt if Indian masala can breakout big in any crossover market, while realistic social films will stand better chance imo. TOH will be an ideal test for this hypothesis, as it has the Aamir advantage too.
Basically all this China as a new found heaven for Indian films wasn’t a well researched statement.
Bhai log, India ke liye film banaao and focus to make good films to beat Baahubali’s record in India else it would stay for a decade, the way the previous genuine ATBB Hum Aapke Hain Koun / Gadar existed.

The Chinese film market offers both challenges and opportunities. The second-largest movie market after the US offers nearly 27,000-28,000 theatres out of which a Bollywood film typically garners 4,500-5,500 screens. In India, too, the widest possible release a film can get is 4,500-5,500 screens out of the 8,000-9,000 screens. PK was released in about 4,000 screens in China, while Dangal managed 9,000, nearly double its India screen count. Further, the average ticket price in China is $12 compared to $1.5 in India.
But the Chinese government rations foreign films fiercely, limiting them to about 34-35 a year, of which nearly 90% are Hollywood productions. Non-Hollywood foreign releases make up just 1.5% of the Chinese film market. Also, a major Indian film studio’s backing is essential to create enough space and noise for the movie. For PK, UTV Motion Pictures secured a distribution deal with Huaxia Film Group, a local Chinese company, and promoted the film aggressively with lead actor Khan, who barely interacts with the media in India, travelling all the way to China. Such factors explain why only big-ticket Bollywood films that have already enjoyed a successful run in India make it to the neighbouring country.
@jayshah,this is not the projection or forescast but this is the target given by chinese distributer plus diff bw Dangal and BB2 after china run wld be 50M$,plus u r forgetting Dangal is releasing in HK on 30.8.17 where it shld add 7-10M$ more and i m hearing BB2 release in China in Sep17,so both wld be running simaltaneously again.I can give a detailed explaination but…..
GOW, a chinese epic movie similar to BB2 wld end at less than 10M$.BB1 was also promoted by team in china.Promotion only works when u have a base like Aamir had and BB2 not.

It’s not Hindi with English subtitles, rather it’s Mandarin subtitles, and most of the imported movies in China are released in original sound track with Mandarin subtitles. There is not even 10% screenings of the dubbed version. It can be verified from maoyan ticketing portal of China, though it’s too late to track now. I am a Chinese language teacher, have been closely following Dangal’s boxoffice collection in China on various Chinese language boxoffice tracking portals. So far i have not come across a single Chinese friend who has watched dubbed version of Dangal.

Abhishek Bachan, Pulkit Samrat, Jackie Shroff, Arjun Rampal in for Paltan. I am not too convinced with the cast. Gone are the days, it seems, when JP Dutta could assemble the biggest stars of Bollywood. Look at the cast of Ghulami, Kshatriya, Border and LOC and compare to this.

While he is gearing up for his ambitious project Daddy, based on the real story of gangster Arun Gawli, Arjun Rampal is all set to turn patriot for his next. The actor has been roped in for JP Dutta’s forthcoming war film Paltan which was announced recently.
Reportedly, Arjun plays the role of a Lieutenant Colonel in the film. Talking about the same, filmmaker J P Dutta expressed his excitement about working with the actor. He also added that since Arjun too hails from a family of army people, just like the filmmaker and hence there is a special connection that the two share.
Very few may be aware that Arjun Rampal’s maternal grandfather retired as a Brigadier. From what we also hear, the actor’s character in the film will hail from Haryana and also has won of the most prestigious as well as highest gallantry award.
Besides Arjun Rampal, recent reports state that Paltan will also star Abhishek Bachchan, Pulkit Samrat as well as Jackie Shroff in prominent roles. As far as leading ladies are concerned, there have been no details on the same.
Bahubali 2 completes 50 successful days at the box office
Bahubali 2 The Conclusion has completed 50 successful days at the Indian box office. The film is still collecting decent amount which is incredible.
Bahubali 2 Hindi version has crossed 505 crore and will finish in the range of 510-515 crore. While all India collection is over 1000 crore. The worldwide gross of the film is around 1600 crores.

Bhandarkar has “right” leanings. Irrespective of that it is good that something is coming out. And with “Right” Govt at center, this probably will get more help in release.
Fantastic! Dark chapter of history which has never been told before. All kinds of movies have been made on 1993 and 2002. But none on 1975 or 1984, and the truth needs to be propagated.
People in general need to understand ke koi bhi doodh se dhula hua nahi hai.
That being said, the Ma-Beta of 1975-78 were infinitely more vicious than the Ma-Beta of 2004-14. But to the greenhorn Congis, this movie provides a template of comparison between the erstwhile Beta and Papu. And even more ironical that the true hakdaar, ie Beta of Sanjay is in BJP!!
Only Mr Right Star Akshay is missing here. Its easy to now make movies on the Emergency under the right rule (Baadshaho is also coming). But they also run the risk of showing one-sided perspective. The Singh biopic will be more interesting with another Mr Right Anupam Kher in it – make a movie on Congress PM just to highlight how evil the woman behind is? And then there is a biopic planned on Modi himself.
There is no one side perspective for what happened in 1975. The interpretation could be different but there is no way to justify imposing emergency. Obviously I will prefer it from more serious cinema maker but lets start somewhere.
@Munna – I did not mean defending what Indira/Sanjay did. But our righty Bhandarkar may only concentrate on the role of RSS during that time instead of making a film on the bigger picture.

Dangal went on breaking all records at box office worldwide. The film became fifth highest grossing non English film by minting $300 Millions worldwide.
With such great releases Aamir Khan Film Productions have surely created a milestone in the history of Indian Cinema.
I think the high point of AKP’s journey so far has been its association with directors who are either making their debut (Aamir, Abbas Tyrewala, Kiran Rao, Anusha Rizvi, Abhinay Deo) or are relatively newcomers (Ashutosh Gowariker, Reema Kagti, Nitesh Tiwari). Even the next 2 productions are also with debutant Advait Chandan (Secret Superstar) and Mahesh Mathai (2 films old director for Rakesh Sharma biopic). This shows the strength and confidence of the production house. Never has it found necessary to work with established directors for BO safety.
BO track record of its films are also stellar, with every film a BO Hit except Dhobi Ghat which was not mainstream commercial cinema. Even then, Dhobi Ghat had an average run at BO and recovered its budget (around 5 cr) and P&A costs (another 5-6 cr) from the distributor share of its WW theatrical run itself.
Personally, my fav film of AKP is TZP. Lagaan and Dangal comes as close second. But role/acting wise I like Talaash and Dhobi Ghat (in that order) as the best. AKP films always brings out the best in him.
TZP is Darsheel’s film. Dangal is aamir’s film. Talaash is the best.
Outside, his performance in Fanaa standsout along with that of Kajol irrespective of the film’s merit. I feel serious roles bring out the best in him.
TZP is a fantastic film even though Aamir only had a supporting role. In Dangal, I felt his physical transformation has taken away the limelight from his acting and expressions a bit although they were bang on. It was just awesome to simply look at Aamir as the pot-bellied, white-haired, middle-aged father.
I am not sure of Fanaa. His acting in the first half as the romantic tourist guide reminded me of Mann (a film I did not like). But he was fine in the second half after it was revealed who he really was. The problem is that I never liked that film well enough to revisit, and it has been a while.
Outside AKP films, I am a big fan of him in Sarfarosh (and the film overall too).
And from his younger days I liked his acting in all Mansoor Khan films (QSQT, JJWS & AHAT). Looking back now, I find them a bit too earnest. But they still remain the best of his chocolate-hero days. I think overall his work on-screen is much better when he is also involved in the back-end film-making – be it in Nasir Hussain Films or in AKP.
I do hope he makes more films under AKP banner than wasting time in stuff like Dhoom 3.
I wont take Salman’s comments seriously. Dont be too harsh on him lest he will stop airing his views! I just wait for his take on important things like war and peace and other things.
Dangal set to enter into Top 400 Worldwide Grossers of All Time

Aamir Khan’s Dangal continues to smash records and create box office history. The film will be among world’s top 400 grossers of all time very soon.
As of 16th June 2017, Dangal is at 411th position in world’s highest grossers list. It just needs $3 million before it will enter into top 400. This is simply unimaginable as earlier none of Bollywood films were even in top 1000. Dangal is also 30th highest grosser of 2016 among all worldwide releases.
On a related note, Dangal has grossed $0.52 million on 6th Friday in China. This is a terrific hold despite the releases of too many Hollywood and local films.

AfDB President ranks third most reputable person on earth
The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has been rated third most reputable personality on earth.This was contained in the 2017 Most Reputable People on Earth list released by South Africa-based Reputation Poll, and made available to the Ghana News Agency.
“Indian Film Actor, Director, and Producer, Aamir Khan, top the list of the world’s 100 most reputable persons released by the global performance-reputation management consulting agency, Reputation Poll International.”
In second place is multi-award-winning British Singer and Songwriter Adele.
Reputation Poll described the ranking as “a list of individuals across the globe that have amassed high reputation for themselves through their work and achievements.”The list features individuals from diverse sectors, including policy, entertainment, leadership, education and business.

In the first post regarding Aamir topping the list, they have clearly wrote the above lines for Aamir.
I don’t think the list is specific to the contribution in 2017 or just recent years….maybe they have kept the span of last 2 or more decades….looks a very sensible list with lot of worthy ppl making to it..
yes and look at the mighty Man Utd have crumbled since his retirement in 2013,its the span of 2 to 3 decades of achievement

Personally think they messed up tactically. They could have gone for a Mourinho from beginning or stuck with Moyes. Either way they invested poorly. World record fee for Paul Pogba is a joke.
Such lists like popular/best/powerful etc. are always debatable and no one can get it right. I mean I see Ronaldo, but no Messi. Maybe because of charges he faces in Spain over taxes. Who knows? But anyways, what they have tried doing will never be perfect. But I have seen such wierd lists popping out in past with some other stars being in the list and their fans and media going hell and boasting about it. Anyways, it’s one of the wierd lists but good to see Aamir’s name in there.
Dangal still making headlines. According to experts this is going to be the last week of Dangal march in China (7th week). From next week it will struggle to get shows with Transformers set to release v wide. Its expected to add another 4 M$ more this week to take it to 187 M$ total. May add a couple after that.
Dangal has crossed 1M$ today.It is at 1.13M$ ATM.Should close today at abt 1.25M$ on it’s 44th day a record in China.Now Dangal is now at no.17 in all time grossers list in China.
The reason why Tubelight may not release on June 23 in Pakistan as the Salman film is likely to pose serious competition to local films release on Eid. Two Pakistani films are slated to release around the same time — Yalghaar that is also getting an international premiere and another titled Sharaba.
Hirachand Dand, President of Indian Film Exporters Association said, “Of what I am hearing from the market sources Pakistani filmmakers are quite keen on protecting their films so that are trying not to have Tubelight release on Eid, when two other Pakistani films – Shor Sharaba and Yalghaar are releasing. There are chances that Tubelight will release on July 7. But as of now, it’s certain that the movie will not release on Eid in Pakistan. Tubelight is yet to be submitted to Pakistani censor board so, what eventually happens is yet to be seen.
And this one reports 6 cr (it is probably somewhere in 5-6 cr range imo). A Khan biggie usually does 20-35 cr in Pakistan. As expected, Salman leads the pack in this market.
Dangal lost out around 20-25 cr from Pakistan due to Aamir’s insistence of not removing India’s national anthem from the film as Paki censors demanded.
BB2 has done 3.25cr in pak.Pakistani fans have told me the collns.Is ka matlab BB2 wale har jagah manipulation kar rahe hai.Actuals of BB2 have not even crossed 1600cr.
Haha, so many folks talk together and they hardly know facts even now.
Pakistan had banned Indian movies from Sep till Dec end. Dangal was NOT in contention to release. Even though they unofficially removed the banned after Dangal’s release, Aamir didn’t dare to be the 1st producer to send his movie to release in Pakistan fearing the backlash. Once the things got cooled down, Rakesh Roshan sent his Kaabil and it was the first hindi movie to be released in Pak after 4 months. Raees applied back of Kaabil but rejected Raees and it didn’t in Pakistan ever.
Later Dangal was submitted in March 2017 for a release and then where there reports of Pak censor don’t allow other National Anthems in the movie and they need to mute it and reports suggest that Aamir didn’t want to remove it. But it is not the same as releasing in Dec and no way it would have done 30 crores with full piracy and 99% of Pak folks have seen it. It is not same as releasing on same day of release.
Sultan did 30 crores coz it released on Eid in Pakistan too and with its muslim background, it did phenomenal. So just guessing that Dangal even in March/April would have done 30 crores is simply a fanatic expectation! Pakistan is not China, the piracy of Indian films is almost legal and even if releases a week or two, it will impact huge.
Now, Tubelight will impact a lot coz once the Eid festive has cooled down and releasing after 2 weeks and piracy will eat up majority of collections.
So according to you Dangal lost out because of the ban? LOL The truth is Paki censor board would not have allowed Indian national anthem even without the ban.
Anyways Dangal lost out 20-25 cr from Pak, maybe more.

Marcus, I think this line exposes the agenda of the commentator as his claim to be “privy to the logic & rationale” behind not releasing Dangal in Pakistan by “Aamir & UTV” leaves little scope about his “intent”.
China had had the same factors going against Dangal as it released there after a gap of 3 & half months, yet collections in China have stunned everyone going way beyond anybody’s imagination.

Dangal has created yet another history as it has become the first Indian film to cross $300 million in worldwide. The second to Dangal is Bahubali 2 which is close to $250 million.
Aamir Khan starrer has also entered into the top 5 highest foreign language grossers of all time. It is behind Japnese release Your Name which is still running. Though Dangal will be eyeing to beat that film when released in more markets. Bahubali 2 has also entered into the top 10 films now.

Though Dutta is currently guarding the details of the project, he told a leading tabloid, “We casually chatted about the project [at the reunion bash] and he immediately agreed to be part of it. He is a wonderful actor, who always aims to do something different. From Yuva (2004) to Guru (2007) and Dostana (2008), he has done a fine job and can pull off any role. I am really happy to have him in my team.”
Interestingly, there are reports that Dutta would be hiring Rajinikanth’s stylist to sketch out actor’s look in the movie. Reveals the National Award winning director, “He plays an Army General and we want to get his look spot-on. I can’t reveal much at this point, but yes, we are in talks with some stylists down South.”

Talismanic Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has become the fourth highest international goal scorer among active players worldwide with his 54th strike for the country against Kyrgyzstan.
The magnificent goal he scored against Kyrgyzstan in India’s 1-0 win in the 2019 Asian Cup Qualifiers match in Bengaluru on June 13 has taken him past England striker Wayne Rooney (53 goals in 119 matches). Chhetri was playing in his 94th match.
Chhetri, who turns 33 on August 3, is currently behind Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (73 in 139 matches), Argentine maestro Lionel Messi (58 in 118 matches) and American Clint Dempsey (56 in 134 matches).
Chhetri’s strike rate is better than Ronaldo, Messi, Dempsey and Rooney. He has a goal per match ratio of 0.57 as against 0.525 of Ronaldo, 0.49 of Messi, 0.42 of Dempsey and 0.45 of Rooney.
Only Brazilian superstar Neymar Junior (0.68), Ali Ashfaq (0.68) of Maldives and Edin Dzeko (0.63) of Bosnia have a better strike rate then Chhetri.
Remarkably, Chhetri is also in the top-30 of the all time goal scorers’ chart (taking into account both retired and active players) and is certain to be among the top-20 when he decides to call it a day.
He would need to score just half a dozen more to reach 60 goals and that should put him in the top-20. Chhetri is expected to contunie for at least a couple of years and he has expressed his desire to play in the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates if India qualify for this flagship continental tournament.
Chhetri is also just six short of playing in 100 matches for the country and if he does that he will join former Indian football’s poster boy Bhaichung Bhutia who retired in 2011 after donning Indian jersey 109 times.
Chhetri had surpassed Bhutia’s record of most number of international goals – 43 — in 2013.

I happened to watch Dhoom 3 for second time as it was coming on TV. I had disliked it quite a bit when I watched it in theater, but this time I found it to be OK. Just another average bollywood big budget fare. I always held it against him for doing this particular film (and it took subsequent 2 v good films in PK and Dangal to let me forgive and forget). But revisiting it, I could see what Aamir wanted to do here and why it failed to deliver.
After doing an art-house film in Dhobi Ghat and a mainstream film for niche audience in Talaash, it was natural for him to do a risk-free big-budget commercial film with universal appeal. Jumping on the Dhoom bandwagon made sense at that time. More so when the script on paper was much more emotionally involved with a backstory for the antagonist(s).
But the end product suffered as the franchise template is too plastic to be taken seriously and to insert an emotional track into it. To do this successfully they needed to change the Dhoom format completely, which probably would have been too commercially risky for YRF. It needed to be a darker film and the glam and glitz quotient to be more subdued. And I think this was one Aamir film in recent times where Aamir may not have been too involved with the post production and the final cut (he instead had moved on to shoot PK).
Anyways, though I am kind of apprehensive about Aamir teaming up with Victor again, I am hopeful of a much better film in Thugs. The reason being that this film is completely free of the cliched Dhoom franchise format. The subject material has more substance and historical background to it. And most of all, Aamir has been involved in the scripting and prep stages of this film. I hope he is equally involved in the post production and making of the final cut. With Adi agreeing to 70% profit sharing with Aamir, I am confident that he will be more involved in the film-making aspects of Thugs than he was in Dhoom 3.
Hoping that they dont go for men flying around flying ships (or auto-rickshaws) during the action scenes or have the actors walk towards the camera in slow motion all the time. Even the material here screams for more realistic action scenes and sensible story-telling, which can be entertaining as well.
Dont understand why its necessary to indulge in Telegu style over-the-top masala. Also the song placements were quite poor and unnecessary in D3, hope that can be fixed too.
Is the series inspired by any real IPL team? Executive producer Ritesh Sidhwani answers that in a tweet where he clarifies, “Would like to clarify that all characters in @InsideEdgeAMZN & the one played by @RichaChadha_ is fictional & not based on any individual”.

Actor Tanuj Virwani, who is gearing up for his debut in the Excel Entertainment’s web series, says that Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have been wonderful producers.
Tanuj said that Inside Edge will reveal some unknown facts about the cricketing world. “I am a huge fan of cricket and when I was doing this show, I realised some unknown facts about cricket and cricketers which I haven’t earlier even dreamt of. The audience is also going to get some shock value after watching this series,” Tanuj said. The actor says “There’s a mixture of good and some really nasty things in this series. Through this series, we are just showing the mirror.”
Talking about his character, he said, “It’s a fictional character. We are not intending to show a real life character. Virat is an outstanding captain and cricketer and he is a style icon as well so when you make something on those lines you take some sort of inspiration from it. And that may be the reason people are finding similarity between Virat Kohli and my character.”

Today is looking like close to 10cr in China for Dangal on it’s 45th day.We are never going to see something like this in overseas again ever in our Lifetime.
Why don’t Yuvi and Rohit bowl part time overs these days. Yuvi did well with the ball in 2011wc. If Kohli has missed this, it is a big oversight from him. If they don’t want to bowl, they should be dropped

Big games you win toss, bat first. Unless it’s a blatant decision. I’m sure India did same in WC 2003 final. Runs in board in final is important. Even 250 will put a good batting line up under pressure.
still no excuse for this kind of terrible batting. This isn’t some sort of genuinely difficult track. it’s a pretty poor one in fact designed to facilitate batting. Not to take anything away from the Pakistani effort but they batted as if they were facing Lilee at Perth! But yeah Pakistan peaked at the right time and despite being weak on paper suddenly beat three (including India today) more favored teams. Eng and India vastly more so. And quite thoroughly.
Kohli underestimated Pakistan’s batting & must have thought to restrict Pak under 250 or thereabouts while choosing to bowl first but his almost every move boomranged as he was first let-down by bowlers & later bigger disappointment came from the steller batting line up.
yes he might have thought they wouldn’t do too much better than Bangladesh. Not an unfair assumption because even against SL and Eng they didn’t have to post those totals. It is turning out to be another low weekend at the Box Office as films are just not bringing in ample moolah. The combined collections of all Hindi films in the running, be it the recent ones [Bank Chor] or the holdovers [Raabta, Hindi Medium, Sachin – A Billion Dreams, Baahubali 2 (Hindi)] is less than 5 crore which tells the tale. There is a capacity of at least 25 crore available for Hindi films to earn across the country and the occupancy is less than 20%, which is a poor state of affairs.
Still, it is Bank Chor that is bringing in the best share amongst them all. The film may have seen mixed response coming its way but at least in certain theaters it is bringing in audiences. This was evidenced on Saturday too when collections improved marginally to 1.66 crore after a rather low Friday [1.40 crore]. A Y Films production, Bank Chor currently stands at 3.06 crore, which could have been a good number had it come on the first day itself.
Amongst holdover releases, this is how collections are looking like:
New releases of the week, Phullu and G Kutta Se, are non-starters. There are hardly any numbers to talk about.

Hindi Medium is continuing to do well and has now gone past the 66 crore mark. It is running at a very low number of screens and still bringing in collections even in the fifth week. Superhit.
Raabta is a Flop as there is hardly anything coming in the second weekend. The film has barely managed to touch the 25 crore mark.
Sachin – A Billion Dreams has found a show or two in certain theaters. It is set to conclude its run at 52 crore mark. Above Average.
Baahubali 2 [Hindi] is in its eight week and still finding showcasing at select theaters. It is collecting some moolah over its 510 crore score already. Baahubuster!
On Sunday, each of the films in the running would at best collect close to Friday numbers due to Blockbuster cricket match between India and Pakistan. Expect deserted look in theaters especially in the evening and the night shows.

Pakistan deserves to win. They peaked at right time. And they are a dangerous side, with a good bowling attack.
India MUST bat first. At worst they get 250 with still scoreboard pressure. I don’t think that decision is rocket science. The manner they have folded is what happens with scoreboard pressure.
Kohli rarely disappoints. I was a little annoyed at his choice to field but ultimately whatever decision you have to maximise your return. India didn’t bowl nearly as well as they could, Pakistan batted as well as they could and when that happens psychological momentum has shifted. Losing a wicket 1st over never helps.
yes losing would be acceptable but this kind of defeat is pretty inexplicable. It’s not as if this is Aus from the 90s. And again not putting down Pakistan, they played very well these last three games. But still there was no excuse for England batting that poorly or now India doing the same. And yes 339 was also too high a score to allow to this opposition. Kohli probably expected a Bangladesh kind of match.
Amir really sealed the deal of India having any chance of thinking about challenging that 338 total. The way he ripped thru the top 3 order…has to rank up there with all-time best spells, especially considering the quality of those batsmen. He is still in his prime…Im curious and excited to see how he handles this. Hasan Ali is another gem. The talent is there…now the structure needs to be solidified.
Thank you satyam…this is a longggg time coming. Loved the heart and passion this Pakistani team showed after that first Indian defeat. I like our coach’s mentality now…celebrate this a little but then now focus on WC 19. With everything the country has been thru (mostly self inflicted), its just great to see them celebrate and have a good time against their biggest rivals. We’ve got young talent…lets see how much they develop.

yes I didn’t realize until I saw it on TV today that this is the first time Pakistan have won a 50 over competition since their WC win. That’s 25 years. Truly a long wait!
1 thing is clear from this tournament. Kohli’s captaincy flaws came to forefront. Pathetic bowling changes, bad team selection and bad toss choices, he’s bad at everything and still very stuck up to his wrong decisions. I’ve said it earlier too that he’s very wrong in analyzing the situations and picking up players for the particular matches and he has proven enough in this tournament.
I lost hopes for WC 2019 coz World Cups are not won by best teams but they are won by great captains. I don’t see him winning any major tournaments like Dhoni and unless there is great captain, you can never win huge tournaments. India is still a very very strong team but with a not so great captain who’s like the best ODI player in the world right now. Sachin was numero uno player too but wasn’t the greatest captain of the game.
Such behavior is expected in India and Pakistan. We are short-sighted countries and continue to jump like monkeys when we win something and act as though we are developed countries with no problems to solve except cricketing issues!!
However, I have to say this was a heart-breaking loss. Watching the camera focus on Kohli’s face who was standing at the boundry with a dejected, despondent look when Pakistan comfortably jumped to 300 was painful. It was pretty clear that he was cursing himself for having gifted the match away to Pakistan by way of the toss. This is NOT the Indian team we have known for a long, long time – and this is for sure not the player we have known. All the players including Rohit, Kohli, Yuvraj, and Dhoni were as though they were conked out.
And contrary to what everyone says, I don’t think Pakistani bowlers were outstanding. They weren’t even getting the ball to swing – thanks to the nothingness in the pitch. But what they were fantastic at was not getting over-excited and trying to over-do things. All the Indian players except Pandya came with a signature of loss written on their fore-heads. It was really like watching the Indian team from the ’90s where everything was dependent on Tendulkar’s act..
And this is the thing with Pakistan..no other team has made use of DUCK-WORTH LEWIS the way this team..They play mediocre in the initial stages, but jump stages due to one D-L equation; and then they win it!! They did it in 1992 world cup and they did it now…though they were almost at a winning stage with S Africa here..
One thing that EACH team needs to learn is you cannot ignore Pakistan once they start coming to the semi-finals…They will channel everything that they can, whether it’s religion or calling up folks they CAN’T get along with including senior players from the Pakistani side and get the job done…
And as I say, it’s not the fact that we lost to Pakistan but we lost to a team that only played better on the day that mattered..though they were showing signs of course of upping the ante with England and Srilanka..

Pakistan are so dangerous. Firmly think on subcontinent wickets any weakness in India’s bowling is nullified by batting. I argued hugely in 2011 with a friend that India will win WC as bowling attacks will matter little, deeper into a tournament this pendulum shifts to bowling as nerves give in. It’s a negative move to field first in a final – possibly rain is a good reason as DWL comes into play or if it’s a blatant pattern in a tournament that batting second is the way. Otherwise I reckon any score north of 250 keeps you in the game as you can take a wicket quick or even if opposition is 100-1 your still in a game. But chasing 300+, your a wicket and big partnership down already plus ANY slip up and you are struggling.
Penalty shootout in football – always go first as if it’s 4-4, you score – the opponent MUST score. You miss you still have a chance that they miss too.
Tie breakers in tennis – staying ahead of the game is important. How many sets are won at 5-4 up and returner breaks? That pressure of holding serve is huge – to stay in the match etc.
India – Pakistan is much more about mental wins, Kohli chickened out IMO. I love Dhoni but not being Captain and still playing in this ‘responsible’ way makes no sense. He needs to cut loose in general, yesterday’s game is not a yardstick but in general he is best when playing the Pandaya innings.
Overall Pakistan deserve it. They are great to watch in these stages as they are so fearless.
Congratulations to Pakistan team for playing fearlessly & displaying strong self-belief despite the initial loss to India. Complacency & over confidence did cause a big blow to team India’s overall performance in the final as they took Pakistan very lightly believing the repeat of the league match against them. Kohli needed this bitter pill to not get overwhlemed by his & team’s recent performances & come out of his smug & snooty self for good!!
I feel sad. Sad for the players. It is just a bad day with bad decisions and panic setting in.

Hrithik Roshan to turn kabaddi player for his next?

Amidst talks of his forthcoming projects post Kaabil, there were only speculations about taking ahead the Krrish franchise. Soon, there were reports of the actor signing couple of films like one with Kabir Khan as well as him playing a mathematician. The latest film to be added on the list is a sports film.
Although there haven’t been many details on the same, we hear that the film will revolve around the subject of kabaddi. Of late, kabaddi has become yet another sport, like football and cricket, which has grabbed the attention of Bollywood stars who have been investing in teams. Interestingly, Ronnie Screwvala who owns the Mumbai kabaddi team will be producing the film.
On the other hand, it is yet to be revealed if Hrithik Roshan will be playing a real life sports persona like Aamir Khan in Dangal or Akshay Kumar in Gold or will he be donning a fictional avatar like Farhan Akhtar as a boxer in his next or Salman Khan in Sultan. While kabaddi as a sports genre hasn’t been explored in films before, it will also be Hrithik Roshan’s first sports film.
She made her debut in Bollywood with Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Mohenjo-Daro but the film failed to impress the audience. Since then, we haven’t seen much of Pooja Hegde who is now busy with South projects. But latest reports claim that Pooja has finally signed her second Bollywood film.
While last time she was paired opposite the heartthrob Hrithik Roshan, this time around she is said to play the lead alongside Abhishek Bachchan. The film in question is said to be thriller which will be directed by Nishikant Kamat.
Earlier we had reported that the makers are keeping details of the film under wraps. Besides the fact that the film is produced by KriArj Entertainment, we hear that the film was supposed to go floor in summer as the makers were contemplating on releasing the same during winter, that is, by the end of this year.
Besides the fact that Ayushmann Khurrana and Sriram Raghavan are joining hands for the first time for a film, we had earlier also reported that Tabu too will be a part of the film. But this film, which is the filmmaker’s next after Badlapur has him reuniting with actress Radhika Apte for his next titled Shoot The Piano Player.
She played Vinay Pathak’s wife in Badlapur but her role in this film is yet to be revealed. On the other hand, this one too has quite a bit of actors including Vinay Pathak and Ashwini Kalsekar who were a part of Sriram’s last film, playing prominent roles.
A day ago, Ayushmann Khurrana shared the first look of the film on social media and also mentioned that went on floor in Pune. From what we hear, actresses Radhika Apte and Tabu will too join the actor this week to wrap up the first schedule of shoot in Pune.

In the inaugural edition of Sankarabharanam Awards, Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Alia Bhatt also won top honors, along with Junior NTR and Dhanush, the organisers announced on Monday.
The award ceremony will be taking place in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Sankarabharanam Awards, formed in honour of filmmaker K. Vishwanath by actress Tulasi, will honour winners from five film industries which include artists from Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Explaining why the need to honour artists from five industries, Tulasi told IANS: “My guru and mentor Dadasaheb Phalke awardee, K Viswanath has worked with both the northern and southern industries in his illustrious career. He stands for the unity of our cinema, a beautiful aesthetic medium that knows no boundaries of geography or language.”
She added that though they will be awarding a much longer list of technicians and artists from Telugu cinema, “We have four categories across industries this year. This is because we had less time to organise the event this year. From next year, we will plan much in advance with a more uniform list.”
Tulasi confirmed Aamir Khan and Alia Bhatt have won Best Actor awards for their respective performances in Dangal and Udta Punjab.
Junior NTR has bagged Best Actor (male) for his performance in Janatha Garage.
Dhanush won the Best Director award for his Tamil directorial debut Pa Pandi.
Actor Dulquer Salmaan won the Best Actor (male) award for his performance in Malayalam film Oru Vadakkan Selfie.
Alia Bhatt who was seen portraying the character of a laborer who accidentally falls into a hell hole of drugs in Udta Punjab was lauded by everyone. She also won the Filmfare award this year for her strong performance in the film.
Aamir, on the other hand, gave a mind-blowing performance in Dangal, which won hearts in India as well as worldwide.

Salman Khan is all set for his big Eid release, Tubelight this week. Director Kabir Khan, who is known for making films that usually have a lengthy run time, will this time surprise us with his latest release. Tubelight we hear was earlier supposed to be a 2 hours 35 minutes film, although, during the post-production process, the film has been slashed to 2 hours 16 minutes.
If one looks at Salman’s previous films, this could be said to his shortest film in recent times. The actor was last seen in Sultan which was nearly 2 hrs 50 minutes, even Bajrangi Bhaijaan was over 2 hours 40 minutes. The 2015 Diwali release, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo event went on to as many as 3 hours.
It seems to be an informed choice on the part of the makers considering the multiplex audience, prefers to have a movie going experience for not more than 2 hours.
As reported by DNA, “Kabir Khan’s films are usually lengthier than the stipulated two hours that the multiplex-viewing audience favours. His last film Bajrangi Bhaijaan was nearly three hours long and worked just fine. Tubelight was edited and readied at a run time of two hours and 35 minutes. But the team decided to slash the film by 19 more minutes just a week before its release,” said a source.
So you thought it was going to be Ranbir Kapoor all the way in Raj Kumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt bio-pic? Wrong! There will be plenty of visuals showing the real-life Sanjay Dutt in the film.
Sources close to the film reveal that Hirani has got hold of extensive video footage from news channels and other sources showing the arrest of Dutt and other vital details from his controversial life. “They are using a lot of news reports and also home videos of Sanju’s childhood that Sanjay’s parents Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt shot” says a source.
I am bit baffled by Jadeja – when it matters the most – he fails and then he keeps performing in test matches etc. – he has been a consistent failure as a batsman in limited over matches – why play him at all? Why not promot Hardik before him?
Add Ashwin to list as well as his ODI performances in last few matches have been lacklustre & has also failed miserably as a batsman in the limited over format. Overall record in limited overs is also just average as his average in the format is over 32 which is way too high considering he is India’s best bowler. His over dependency on spin friendly pitches makes him look like a club cricketer on piches not assisting him as was the case in the finals of champions trophy where he struggled to spin the ball & lacked the variation to trouble the batsmen.
WHY GREAT SPORTS MOVIES GO BEYOND THE GAME

From being the setting for songs and dances to becoming a pivotal part of plots, the depiction of sports in Hindi cinema has changed dramatically…
There’s an intriguing connection between Aamir Khan, the ‘Sports Movie’ and ‘The Cause’ in Hindi cinema. It started in 1990 with Dev Anand’s Awwal Number in which Khan hits the winning stroke for the country in a cricket match threatened by a terrorist bomb. Then came Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992). Here, Khan, the naughty underdog, won that gruelling cycle race for the greater glory of family and college. Almost a decade later came Lagaan (2001) which showed the hero hitting the most famous sixer in Hindi cinema for his village, country, freedom and throw-in-whatever-else-you-want. And then there’s Dangal (2016), where (via his daughters) he scores once more, with feeling, for country, boxing and women’s empowerment — proving that even when he’s kept away from the arena, you can’t seem to lose with Khan around. Not only has this Khan been a flag-bearer for the sports movie in Hindi cinema, you could trace the popularity of the genre in his career graph — a hesitant beginning, the build-up, the iconic moment and today, a veritable explosion.
Lagaan was a landmark in many aspects, one of which was the narrative use and cinematic depiction of a sport. And in the 15-odd years after the movie, sports films and biopics have been popping out non-stop from the Bollywood factory (see box). Apart from these flicks, we now await biopics on hockey legend Dhyan Chand and badminton champs PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.
If further (and perhaps final) proof is needed of the inroads sport has made in Bollywood, tennis queen Sania Mirza made her debut on Koffee With Karan this season — which, as you know, is as high as you get on the B-Town ladder. (For the record, Mahesh Bhupathi was the first sportsperson to grace the couch when he appeared with his actor-wife Lara Dutta Bhupathi.) And to think that, for the decades before Lagaan, Bollywood hadn’t focused too much on the sporting spirit. Dara Singh was the legendary exception of course, but his films were considered B-grade ones, not worthy of a high-ranking hero.
But the ’70s and the two decades that followed were a time when the formula film reigned supreme in Hindi cinema. And sports simply didn’t seem to fit in. How could the hero be seen in a large part of the film with sweaty skin and baggy sports outfits? What did one do with a heroine handicapped by no make-up (okay, very little make-up), no chandelier earrings, no teased-to-death hairdos? Plus, short skirts are sexy, but how many wardrobe changes would regular sports gear allow her?
So much easier to put Dharmendra in a gladiator-style costume and have him slug it out with his macho Punjabi muscles on display. (Those thunderous scenes and thighs now rank high in the camp filmi pantheon, which only goes to prove that Manmohan Desai knew what he was doing in Dharam Veer, (1977)).
Or you could use a bit of game playing to spice up a song picturisation. So make Jeetendra mince about a badminton court in his impossibly tight white pants, while singing Dhal Gaya Din and trying to kiss Leena Chandavarkar through a badminton net. Our heroine, resplendent in full make-up and a shiny pink silk outfit, made only one concession to the theme — she used her dupatta as a bandeau for her hair to show you that she was really serious about the game.

It was all so laughable — because Hindi cinema refused to take sports seriously. The considered opinion in B-Town was that sports sold on the field, not the box office. Though Mithun Chakraborty’s Boxer (1984) was the rare hit, the tepid reception to films like Awwal Number, Main Intequam Loonga (1982) or Prakash Jha’s Hip Hip Hurray (1984) proved the point. Even Maalamaal (1988), a movie that starred no less than Naseeruddin Shah and Sunil Gavaskar in a guest appearance, turned out so atrocious that it crashed. Any surprise then that Aamir Khan could find no producer to back a story about a bunch of villagers in dusty dhotis playing cricket on a maidan in colonial India? He had to eventually produce it himself. We should be grateful for his leap of faith — Lagaan, at once radical and straight from the heartland, would go on to change the rules of the game. And here we are today with Dangal, another rural nail-biter about sports, dreams and patriotism, that’s reportedly become Hindi cinema’s most profitable film ever.
So what’s changed? The short answer: a reality check. Middle-aged heroes still romance nubile young things (looks like that’s not going anywhere anytime soon) but no heroine in the movies today would dare step on a badminton or tennis court dressed like Chandavarkar. Whether it is hockey, boxing or wrestling, they step out looking the part with trained body language, correct sporting gear, and a clever no make-up look.
Indeed, the posters for Dangal and to a lesser degree, Mary Kom and Sultan, showed just how far the definition of the Hindi film heroine has grown. The Dangal girls, in their tees, tracks and close crops that would do an army man proud, are the antithesis of the traditional leading lady. These are women who are knocking men out on screen as happily as Dara Singh once did. The camera does not sexualise their bodies (though, interestingly enough, the same could not be said for Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag). If they have some make-up on during the game, it’s because many of their real-life counterparts like to dress up for the court today. Most importantly, they are women who go after what they want with a passion that is unapologetic and will not be stopped.
These heroines show us why great sports movies always go beyond the game. They respect the pursuit of excellence, they inspire us and they tell us a lot about the times we live in. There’s much to celebrate today besides India’s on-court victories.

I think Tubelight is a safe film even with its low buzz. It just needs 250 cr to make everyone involved happy, which should be doable considering it is a Salman movie coming on Eid. Even with poor WOM (if so), it should get to 250 cr due to the big opening it will take.

Tubelight Budget, Screen Count, Economics
One of the most anticipated projects of this year Tubelight is releasing this Friday. The film stars Salman Khan and Sohail Khan in the lead roles. It has been directed by Kabir Khan and produced by SKF.
Tubelight Budget:
As per the sources close to the film, Tubelight has been made on a budget of 95 cr (excluding Salman’s fee). The market value of Salman is around 55-60 crore so the actual value of the budget will be 150-155 crores.
Tubelight Screen Count:
It is releasing in approx 4400 screens in India. While in overseas it is likely to be the be the widest Bollywood release ever. The filmmakers are targeting to release it in 50 plus overseas territories and it is already the biggest release in some markets.
Tubelight Economics:
The makers are in the safe zone by selling the film at a record price. The non-theatrical recovery was also pretty good. Now it will up to NH Studioz to recover the high price. Tubelight will be a successful film for all parties involved after crossing 250 crores only.
Last year when we reported about Sultan, only sky was the limit as far the buzz was concerned. This is not the case with Tubelight which is probably due to the average promos. Though the buzz has increased after the release of couple of new tracks which hint at strong emotional content. It will be a good start if the film crosses 25 crore on opening day considering the pre-Eid release period.

The film till its 8th weekend has made a collection of 1070 crores nett (1379 crores gross) at the Indian box office, including all versions. In overseas, the film stands with a collection of approximately 311 crores.
Baahubali 2‘s worldwide collection now stands with a collection of 1690 crores. Looking at its current pace, it does not seem like the film will reach the 1700 crore mark.
Also, with the release of Salman Khan’s Tubelight this week, we are expecting the film to dominate in all circuits which could mean the end of Baahubali 2‘s run.
The message of toilets for every household impressed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi enough to tweet to the actor. According to a source, “The Government has decided to implement an entertainment tax exemption in all BJP-run states. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is not merely a film, but also a tool for social reform. And, this film deserves to be seen by all. Therefore, it deserves to be made tax free.”
Both bollywood and regional film industry are not pleased with GST. That maybe the reason they roped in the biggest bollywood star to convince detractors.
As for TEPK, let us wait and watch how audience respond.
Anil Kumble steps down as India coach. Tuesday classic for Kumble –

That’s what it looks on the outside…It could also be that 3 wise guys (Sachin, Saurav, VVS) thrust their friend into the hot seat without even properly assessing whether he had the experience for the coaching job considering he had no prior experience in that…And are now made to look silly with their hasty decision making…
We don’t know what actually happened. It could also be that 2 greats couldn’t see eye to eye on what they thought what was right for the team…
Kumble record as coach is pretty decent. Quite frankly Zidane had no ‘real’ experience but helped win back to back CL’s. I’d rather trust the humble kumble over the arrogance shown by some Indian cricketers of late. Your right no one knows the truth so suspecting the 3 wise guys who collectively are legitimate legends for Indian cricket is not a great position to take.
I am.sure zidane won his coaching badges and was the coach of their B team. Kumble got the job because he threw his hat in the ring..there was no reason to sack shastri had supported him. The real issue is the people who are doing thw decision making. What exactly have vvs saurav and Sachin shown in their role but ineptiitude. They sacked shastri for no reason got kumble in because he was a legend like how kapil was. He also failed as a coach..now I hope they don’t get sehwag in because he is a legend. There is no connection that a legend has to be a good coach. I am.not saying kumble was a bad one amd i am sure he is a nice and humble guy but i don’t think virat is the kind of guy who will compromise for Indian cricket however brash he looks. Your character of Kohli is that of Kumble. I don’t think the 3 wise guys are brainless to make dumb decisions. They’ll be smart enough to know consequence. Their characters like Kumble are known for many years. Kohli is a junior comparatively.
Maybe they are too similar. But here it’s a shameful that the coach as in football is the scapegoat. Player power is not a good thing.
As alluded in many articles, Shastri was player coach; I don’t think he has long term vision and strategy for team. Same goes for Shewag. You could see it in Punkab Kings X1. With Kumble there was some strategy. With current lot in contention, I will prefer Moody as coach.
I still can not understand Kohli’s though process when Ashwin and Bumrah were allowed negative line of bowling in final and not asking Jadhav or Yuvraj when everyone was going for 8 runs per over.
Kohli’s crucial miscalculation was deciding to field, the rest were far less significant issues. Bhuvneshwar did bowl very well in the final overs though (had good figures even overall). Even Bumrah wasn’t bad. The score would have been much higher without these efforts. Not that it mattered in the end!
I’d expect nothing less! Every player loved him so clearly he’s genuinely hurt here. That boundary is very important. Most evidence points to player power here.
In any case making your best player Captain is not good. The cake then has a cherry on top. Tendulkar was THE wicket but then if your Captain is Ganguly or Dravid you have 2 important wickets and a problem of pressure is halved.
I think all this politics is BCCI’s old guard doing. Virat is just a pawn who was used to remove Kumble. All the leaks prior to Champion trophy was from BCCI because based on twitter comment, he received first notice of difference from BCCI yesterday. So, who was leaking the difference between Kohli and Kumble earlier? Kumble has asked for pay raises for players which probably has rubbed old brass in wrong way.
Completely agree player power is not a good thing..But sacking Kohli is not an option. It does look like the team is behind him..The best was to make them work together but if they cant see eye to eye no point. This is like Wasim and Waqar scenario..
I do think the 3 guys acted in too much haste to remove Shastri and the only reason for going with Kumble was because he was a great player.
The only saving grace here is unlike football, in cricket , the position of the coach doesn’t carry same weightage.
They can probably now ask Rahul to take over. He is doing a great job with the kids and has experience too. And most of these players have worked with him in India A or in IPL
These conflicts are inexplicable in nature. If you have personal issues in these sports it’s really pathetic to ‘support’ sacking of another. 11 against 1 well one day that 1 might be Tendulkar or Dravid – much loftier names and Kohli will look like an idiot. Partly does anyway.
Zidane is a different story. He’s only managing Ronaldo not Madrid. You manage Ronaldo you really start to get Madrid working optimally. No one has managed to manage Messi as he always plays. You need a strong manager for this like Guardiola now.
Kohli will eventually need managing. He’s got an ego. Dhoni didn’t really, only in WC FINAL did he show an element of ‘im doing this alone’. Sacking Kohli is possible – you still have a batsman, one ‘fired’ up to go all out. Now you have one who gets his way.
Krish you are giving too much credit to Ravi Shastri’s cricketing & coaching skills. He is part of the money grabbing powers @ BCCI and part of the cricketing mafia. He can step in and out at will and last time he just stepped away to avoid too much limelight. Kohli is just incidental and been used as a pawn at the hands of BCCI with all these media leaks of differences….

A final is different. Plus a lot of those matches had weather in mind. London has been scorching hot last few days. In England weather in summer can be iffy, so even some sunshine with rain later is possible. But Sunday was not one of those days. It was a disgusting muggy hot day.
A final is simply different to any match. Anything can happen. I can bet Australia would never bowl first especially if your weakness is bowling and strength batting. The attitude of ‘we’ can chase anything down’ is arrogance. 2003 India did that they got smashed with a record chase required. Here they got something similar. Pakistan were improving, they chased down SL target with some ease.
Personally think the toss is non debatable. Obviously once you choose to bowl you need to do it well. That’s obvious! You also need to chase well! India messed up on both fronts.
Also how can the coach be blamed for any of this? A lot points to Indian players being spoilt rotten with money in a post Tendulkar era. The riches reaped in that era are demanded now.
I can understand Greg Chappell not being taken to. But one of India’s truly loved unsung heroes makes little sense.
This is not Kohli bashing. He is a deserving player in Indian team and the main reason India got to final with a series of not out innings. But I reckon the captain should be in the firing line here more.
Coaches in football are paid a premium for these very reasons! Shamefully you need a CV of Ferguson to do a proper job. If Indian Captain was Rahane I reckon this would not be an issue as much. Kohli’s position now is on the line big time. He’ll have to make sure the next coach is given respect otherwise it’s obvious what’s going on even though it already is!
A captain takes the brunt in case toss is the reason for a defeat no doubt but i am sure the entire team management decides on what to do in case toss is won. Its never a decision of one person.
More importantly toss is a reason only in hindsight. Both SA and BD were must win games and we fielded after winning the toss. Had Bumra not bowled that no ball, we might not even be talking about the toss.
If bumrah LOL. If India batted we’d have a winning team! If logic is applied to anything.
FYI I do think it’s a team decision on toss. I’d be surprised if only Captain makes choice. But maybe in this case Kohli went his own course? Another maybe or if…no one knows. The only things coming out are very positive things on Kumble. Very little nice things are being said on Kohli – in the absence of being present or inside knowledge most people defer to these things and it seems Kumble is being made a scapegoat and treated like mud.
A lot of things are discussed (or not) but it is ultimately the captain’s decision.
A final is always a different situation. Chasing in a final is very different from chasing in any other match. A number of cricketers have commented on this.
The other thing I’d say here is (still responding to Krish) that when Pakistan bowled out SL and Eng for paltry totals (I didn’t expect them to win either match) and then when they really batted well against Eng it was obvious they were peaking at the right time or were at least extremely dangerous at that point in the tournament. Kohli possibly didn’t account enough for this. Of course these things happen in a game. Sometimes you get disproportionate praise for winning, the same for losing. It’s not unfair when the same thing happens either way. Kind of like an actor who looks like a genius as long as the films are working and the like the biggest fool when they’re not. In any case second-guessing the toss has always been one of the most common things in cricket commentary.
By the way and since we’re all wise men and women after the game (!) I’ll add this bit. I felt this a bit in real time as well. Kohli should have taken a chance and saved his wicket when the first one fell so quickly. I would have been tempted to send Yuvraj in. The latter’s weakness has sometimes been susceptible against spin, not pace very much. Which is not to say he couldn’t have gotten out. Obviously Aamir was bowling superbly and the bowler sometimes has his day (we’re less used to this today than we once were because most pitches favor the batsman so heavily.. though Pakistani pace bowlers often prosper on precisely these kinds of ‘subcontinental’ tracks.. some of the good Indian bowlers too are at times much more effective than much better bowlers from elsewhere.. in any case Eng prepare these kinds of tracks for most of their one days which is why they score massively quite regularly in Eng). But Kohli has been a bit susceptible to swing, even the very limited kind on this sort of track. After his disastrous Eng you he admitted to having trouble with outswingers. He said he’d been expecting the in-swinger each time he got the out-swinger. Now this is a diplomatic way of putting it. I personally don’t think he’s still solved the problem though he says he’s worked on his technique. I guess a future Eng tour will show whether he’s right or wrong. In any case when he then did hugely well in Australia everyone said he’d solved the problem. But it’s not the same kind of bowling. He did have trouble against Aamir’s movement. I think he did the responsible captain’s thing and batted in his usual position. However having lost a wicket so early it might not have been a bad idea to save this most valuable wicket. perhaps Yuvraj would have gotten out early as well but it was a chance worth taking. On that note this was true of an older team as well. In fairness I should add that very few batsmen today (for a while now) are comfortable against swing and for the simple reason that they don’t encounter it very often. The kinds of conditions that were once devastating in Eng and even average bowlers could sometimes be match winners. Leaving this aside you have Pakistanis on subcontinental tracks. And this is why you see with fair regularity their bowlers being devastating for a few matches or a few years (depending on how long they last). They’ve had this tradition for decades and they’ve mastered it. When they’re on song most batting lineups have trouble against them. At any rate not many batsmen are that great in these conditions. Sachin of course had no weakness in this sense but Dravid was very good too (which is why he really prospered in Eng, in fact on pure numbers he’s better than Sachin in Eng). But this wasn’t true of many of the other important names in that team. It takes really sound technique to get through a good spell of swing bowling and again most batsmen today are just not exposed to this enough. Kohli needs to have a strong Eng tour at some point to really become ‘complete’. He himself recognized this after the last tour, that he really needed to work on his technique.
My guess is they didn’t even contemplate losing Sharma so quickly. Personally think Pujara or someone of that ilk needs to be in this side. To steady the ship, steer from danger, rebuild and let others counter attack. A Hussey type or you just counter with Yuvraj. Dhoni is useless in this role. If he plays 2011 final style then fine.
Blaming Kohli is the easiest option to do in this. He looks brash, is aggressive, wears his attitude, is the exact opposite of how we like our role models to be (and you are even saying that he decided the toss on his own, Were we ever going to bat first after the previous two games). I expect these insinuations to be directed at him more so because he cant defend himself.
But what we are missing is that inspite of all that, he is crazily committed to the team. He is probably the fittest in the team, runs like crazy between the wickets, is probably the one who does the extra yards in the gym, is ultra discplined in his eating habits and is a complete professional. The very fact that these differences didnt make him perform badly as a team or individually shows professionalism. And this has been said by his peers or coaches about him…Kumble we know is equally committed and humble and is a legend so blaming Kohli who is not as big as Kumble is the easier way out.
But it is very much possible that two players just didnt see eye to eye on things and decided not to work…One of them need not necessarily be wrong. Two contrasting ways of handling the team can cause friction and both can be correct in their ways.
No one is denying Kohli’s work ethic. They are questioning his intentions as a character in the dressing room and the efforts he made to work with Kumble. If he chooses not to speak some will approve (as he’s not dragged it out publicly), some will want a response or explanation etc.
E.g. the same label you applied to 3 wise guys is perfectly plausible in the current Indian dressing room. That there are factions and groups who are powerful and insecure to push out a coach.
Bottom line what is the issue with what is perceived as a discipline driven coaching method?
Kohli himself suggests he banned all social media interaction. And as you describe him as a quite relentlessly disciplined character and sportsman don’t you think Kumble is the perfect conduit for this?
Boycott is hilarious, seriously the best ‘colour’ commentator today. He is brutal and often right. As I said the weather was smoking hot, it was the Oval – absolutely daft decision. No amount of defense can get away from that. Anything after is a consequence of this decision. Blame a no ball or whatever but this was the worst decision on the day. I’m glad Kohli is getting his now. I remember Nasser Hussain made a similar shocker in an Ashes series and he’s reminded the same many a time.
Because of Kumble resignation the microscope on Kohli will not go away.
LOL go to a cricket forum and talk Dangal numbers. SS is diverse, movies mostly, politics, news and sports. Dangal’s run is coming to an end slowly. It’s so far ahead of BB2, the comparison is no longer of huge interest.

I chucked when I read this. Folks in India need to be introduced to some of these concepts. Everyone pretends these ‘laws’ don’t exist for Bollywood movies. All kinds of totals are thrown out and no one does the actual accounting on them. When it’s something as massive as Dangal or BB2 obviously there’s no doubt about what the actual picture (no pun intended) is. With everything else one has to take these factors into account. Of course (and I am saying this only for the millionth time) all of this begins in India. 99% of the figures that are reported by everyone (yes everyone) are the stuff of fiction. Even when the actual numbers (talking about production, distribution costs versus gross/net figures) are in the ballpark the way they’re presented is completely false. Again when it’s a massive hit or a total failure it’s relatively easy to know what’s going on. But otherwise things are much more complicated.
I wish Indian BO analysis was done in such great detail. Instead all we get are ball-park numbers be it collections, distribution price, P&A costs, shares, etc etc. It only gives a vague idea of what is actually going on at the ground level. Of course the 300 cr grossers benefit everyone in the distribution chain and producers too. But for an average grosser, it is pretty much muddy waters. Most of the time there are losses for the sub-distributors involved. Sometimes such reports come to the surface (recently there were some reports abt losses in the chain for both Kaabil and Raees – despite both doing average business).
I think Bollywood is overall reluctant to expose BO and movie economics transparency. If they do, very few films can be counted as successes and that would damage the reputation of the industry (and of course star egos).
Virat Kohli has gone nuts…..success has gone over his head….I would never believe that gentlemen like Kumble would every try to dictate captains……what a sham(e)!

BJP has understood that Bollywood is a good medium to propagate their propaganda. And among the Superstars Akshay is thier default poster boy since he is not a Khan. This NaMo biopic will probably be released before next election (along with Singh biopic).
As for Akshay he is already being wooed by BJP to join politics.
Furthermore Akshay is positioning his films in a very strategist way by blocking all the Republic Days and Independence Days:

I think he will lose out the Independence Day 2019 with Salute probably releasing then. While the Khans are after the festival weekends of Eid, Diwali and Christmas, Akshay has carefully harnessed the Desh-Bhakti holidays to his name. He is ideally suited to join the BJP bandwagon after he hangs his boots.

The astute captain and coach in Kumble waited till the team had taken off and were well away in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean before let off the bombshell in the shape of a well-considered and prepared statement.
Even then, he did not call a press conference or leave himself open to questions. At the same time, he was categorical in his criticism of Kohli.
The timing was perfect in the sense that even if Kohli wanted to respond, he would only be able to do so once he reached the West Indies, a good 10 hours’ flying time away, and then some.
By that time, public opinion would be formed and cemented.
The master tactician bowled a great over, which left even a great batsman like Kohli struggling for timing.
LOL Great timing! BCCI has made a scapegoat out of Kumble. I dont think Kohli is more than a pawn here. Anyways, they could have continued with Shastri in the first place, Indian coach status is more like a sidekick for the team.

All the 90’s and 00’s greats were quiet unassuming types except Ganguly. Sehwag is outspoken since retiring. Harbhajan obviously was a ratty fella. Yuvraj maybe fiery. But Tendulkar, Kumble, Dravid, VVS, Dhoni were all cool customers. Steely but calm. Driven but not overly vocal. Well mannered and gentlemen.
Kohli is bit like Ganguly but as he is the #1 player in his generation he has more leverage than Ganguly who lets face he was not in Dravid or Tendulkar’s or Sehwag’s league. He had incredible moments but he ushered in the captaincy required to challenge Australia. Kohli has too much power being THE MAN + CAPTAIN. And he needs a humbling moment to remind himself he is not bigger than the Indian team or coach.
Elite sports stars who want to stay on top NEED this. It’s simply called experience. They’ve been there done that BUT know what was missing to get one level up. Beyond this tennis players like Djokovic and Murray change coaches as when your late 20’s – marriage, children can really affect performance. You need a strong coach to keep it going.
I’d say the Zidane-Ronaldo to Kumble-Kohli / India is apt here. Krish is right that Kumble has a lovely character vs. Kohli so naturally he’ll find support. But thats Kohli’s battle to fight. He may also be right that 2 people just don’t get along. But this is not Captain vs. Coach. Kumble is a team coach not just Kohli’s. Quite frankly he’s the expert and the team should be following his orders – if results don’t fly then sack him.

Abhinav Bindra is fool to respond and get into this controversy. I’m on Kumble’s side too but this is taking it too far. Let me talk in support of Kohli here.
Firstly, Kumble is not Kohli’s personal coach and is a team coach. Kohli has his own personal coach,Rajkumar Sharma and he TOO has not changed him for 19 years now. Team coaches come and go every few years, its not big deal. Even if captain likes someone or dislikes someone, they keep changing. It is not same as personal coach.
Kumble was given the 1 year contract and the extension always depends on Captain’s feedback as he’s going to lead the team in WC 2019. If he says, he’s not completely comfortable under this coach, they will not extend him, simple as that. After all it is more of Kohli’s responsibility to win the WC 2019 than any of the coaches appointed. Coaches can be replaced left and right but we can’t replace Captain as easily for a cricket team.
Only way I’m disappointed is how the things were handled with Kumble but if you know the history.. majority of the team coach-es were removed abruptly and without notice. Kumble had a perfect let-go at the end of his official contract and not terminated. He just didn’t get additional extension after his 1 year trial period.

If Captain feedback was important then he should have been consulted when Kumble was appointed. This is a classic case where you love some one and you are forced in marriage with some one else and you don’t like it from start…Kohli wanted Shastri to continue but CAC put Kumble in charge. For outside world things look rosy (number of wins) but internally marriage was not working from start.
I want to fault the process of selection..CAC should have listened to team..what players expect from coach…If the player expectation is something not sportsman like then they should be kicked out of team…Now ask for application for coach and get their ideas…whoever has good long term vision and players views are accommodated..we are golden..

You are talking about marriage literally here. Just coz you have great script doesn’t mean, you’ll be a great director (as in movies).
If you go back to last year’s news, it was mentioned that reports mentioned that BCCI was not 100% sure if Kumble was the right coach for WC-19 and that’s why he was given ‘trial run’ of 1 year contract. If things fall into place and Captain/Team get along with coach well, they will continue till world cup. I mean, on paper everyone might have liked his plans but he might be bad at executing them. They could have directly given him 3 years if all liked his plans but giving 1 year contract certainly showed some reservations about his approach. They gave 1 year that if things don’t fall into place, the new coach will have at least 2 years before WC to get used to the team and work along well. Everyone is quite aware that Kohli’s choice was Shastri and if they wanted to place Kumble, he had reservations. Maybe the 1 year term was the consensus between Kohli and BCCI/Committee to see if this works fine and he agreed on that condition.
So, if Kohli is asked for his opinion now, he will give his choice and that is not Kumble. There is 99% chance it will back to Shastri.. all the coach applications and Shastri not applying is trivial, he’ll be appointed IMO.

Salman’s logic is that only way to beat Aamir is by increased volume. So he will now do 3 films a year, while he thinks Aamir only does one film in 3 years. Coincidentally, Aamir now has 3 films in various stages simultaneously (SS in post-production, TOH in production and Salute in early pre-production stage). He is not only going to have one release each year, but is also involved with the film-making aspects of all these films. Salman probably doesnt understand or care about this, since he knows that his crazed up fanbase will digest whatever he throws at them.

Fair enough – coaches and support staff can only lead horses to water; whether they drink or not is up to them. And yet, there is a good reason video analysis – the one tool that helps you avoid the mistakes of history – has become central to cricket coaching (or, indeed, to player preparation in any sport) these last two decades. And any modern coach, in any sporting discipline, would be derelict in his given duty if he did not do due diligence and share his findings with the players he is tasked to mentor.
Late into the night of April 2, 2011, the Indian dressing room at the Wankhede Stadium was awash in champagne as “the boys” celebrated their six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the final of that edition of the ICC World Cup. If the reason for the rift is issues of indiscipline like not turning up on time or not watching homework then Kohli should be sacked as captain …No way CAG should be supporting him. It is uncanny how Dangal is relevant to the present situation. How the father watched videos and gave tips to his daughter. How his strictness was resented by his daughters. How the daughter rebelled and how the father felt lonely and unwanted at one point of time.
Actually before the finals.. they had discussed in commentary box that big score in finals or knockout games still eludes Kohli and lets see if he can do something today. As expected he did not. The perception of big match player is not sticking to Kohli and its been for a while now.
There is no chaser in world cricket like kohli..i think he has chased 280 plus score some 10-12 tomes and ended with tons. There are always areas one can improve. These kind of stats are just coming out because it’s a great time to bring down kohli. Even the source is scroll for 2-3 articles. Last CT kohli top scored in finals also and in SF. Totally agree. Decision making starts at top. The idea that a committee is formed and selects a new coach is not odd but against the rules of the way to select it is dubious. Still think there is no reason for disagreement Day 1.

Are you an Indian cricket fan who is crushed by the defeat of your national team to the one from Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final? Then I will tell you what happened today.
Today, we saw the defeat of people who were arrogant in one victory and took a jingoistic approach to the game. Today was the defeat of hyper-nationalism, of jingoistic news anchors, commentators, ex-cricketers—basically anyone and everyone who turned this match into another opportunity to ridicule and insult Pakistan.
It was a defeat of those war-mongers who spew venom online and offline and turn every India-Pakistan match into a proxy battle. Today was a spectacular defeat of some loudmouthed news anchors, forever-frothing-in-the-mouth former military veterans turned TV commentators, politicians of a particular ideology, former cricketers whose bats no longer do the talking but their Twitter handles do, and a host of other people who were bombarding your Facebook and Twitter timelines with Father’s Day memes and telling you that you were either with the Men in Blue or “Terrorists in Green”.
Yet there is a lesson to be learnt in this defeat. No, this isn’t about our cricket team. They will win some, lose some, and learn their own lessons. But those outside the pitch will have to learn to be humble in victory and graceful in defeat. They will have to learn that arrogance always takes one down. They will have to learn that this new kind of hyper-nationalism that they believe is kosher isn’t going to take the country anywhere; it will only make you the butt of jokes and ridicule, as nature has its own way of giving it back. They will have to learn that hate begets hate and only love can unite hearts. And they will have to learn to be good human beings first, Indians or anything else later.
So now, let us celebrate the grand victory of a sport that’s dear to over a billion people in the subcontinent. Today, cricket won. Today, those who love this sport genuinely won. Nothing else matters. Congratulations, Team Pakistan! And Men in Blue, we love you even in your defeat.

One of the members of BCCI’s three-man Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) met as many as 10 players during the recent Champions Trophy to seek feedback on head coach, and not even one player was in favour of Anil Kumble continuing on the job, mid-day has learned.
Sources also said some players had even stopped following established protocol implemented by Kumble during his reign as coach.

Virat Kohli may have refused to admit that India buckled under pressure against Pakistan in Sunday’s Champions Trophy final here at The Oval, but he might be the first to admit that it was the demands of coach Anil Kumble that led to the fallout between the Indian captain and him.
“He was putting too much pressure on the players,” a member of the Indian team told mid-day before departing to the West Indies.
Kumble, who quit as head coach on Tuesday, was apparently putting the players under the pump far too much and had ‘unrealistic’ expectations which created a negative vibe in the dressing room.
It is also understood that when a member of the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) met as many as 10 players during the tournament, not a single member was in favour of Kumble continuing as coach.
The cracks appeared to surface during the Champions Trophy when some protocol implemented by Kumble during his reign as coach were not followed by the players. “There were some rules he (Kumble) had put in place from his first tour as coach in the West Indies last year, which were ignored during the Champions Trophy,” a source disclosed.
While the source didn’t specify the rules, he hinted that Kumble’s style of functioning had led to less freedom compared to when Ravi Shastri was in charge as Team Director from 2014 to 2015-16.
It may be recalled that Kumble came into the reckoning at the last moment when Shastri was all set to become coach last year. Reportedly, the former leg-spinner was told to apply for the post by Ganguly.
While it is not known when Kumble told the players about his decision to step down as coach, the fact that batting coach Sanjay Bangar handed out a lot of the instructions during the practice session before the final at The Oval was a strong indicator that Kumble had been side-tracked as early as last week.
Differences with coaches are not unprecedented in Indian cricket. In 1996, Sandeep Patil was sacked as coach after only six months into the job. It was reported then that the players did not approve of Patil, who was replaced by S Madan Lal.
The biggest coach issue concerned Greg Chappell, who had major differences with captain Sourav Ganguly in 2005.
I dont think the buzz is low here. Salman movie on Eid is an event (a religious one and pun intended) and is likely to fetch 200 cr in first week. Rest will depend on how the film is. If its watchable like Sultan, it can add another 100 cr in the remaining weeks to get to 300 cr.
Currently there is a lot of noise about BJP wanting Akshay to play NaMo in the upcoming biopic. The movie will of course be used as a promotional campaign for general elections in 2019. Just doing a film on Toilet building has given Akshay so much of political advantage.
On the other hand Aamir and his SMJ team has done a lot of ground work on water conservation through Paani Foundation to make rural Maharashtra drought-free. This effort has hardly made much headlines, as its a BJP state. Here is an old interview where Aamir expresses his political views on Gujarat happenings. I believe this was during the time-frame of Narmada controversy which led to a ban on Fanaa’s release in Gujarat.
Well, he has done blasphemy. No doubt BJP looks at him with suspicion! Meanwhile let him continue with good work without getting into muddy political waters and work on good films like Dangal. It is really commendable that he gave such a performance in Dangal and made that film when the atmosphere was so toxic with his being termed as anti national and desh drohi.
This was before even Mangal Pandey release. This was Aamir’s first set of interviews after long gap and was done in April 2005. Mangal Pandey released in Aug 2005. What Aamir said in this interview was not even considered controversial and it was a generic opinion all through the media about Gujarat riots and Modi. The whole narrative changed slowly and as Modi kept getting powerful in the BJP ranks. I don’t think Aamir would say something similar even in his dream now and to be fair you can’t say that about the current PM of the country.

Dont remember watching it in theaters (probably watched it in VCR). Not a big fan of this movie. But somehow this turned out to be his biggest hit after QSQT in his chocolate-faced days (pre-Rangeela). His other 2 hits in the early nineties (DHKMN and (HHRPK) were not as big as Dil at BO. But his best film in that phase was perhaps JJWS which had an average run at BO and was a moderate success.
Film’s CD reminds me of my uncle a hardcore Mads fan. Film has not aged too well, like HAHK this was Madhuri’s film all the way, kind of revived the vibe for Aamir in that QSQT mode much needed.
Yes, Dil kind of stabilized his career among lots of flops during 1989-90. In that way it was an important film for him.
But it really has not aged well. I guess Indra Kumar’s direction was too loud. Mahesh Bhatt was perhaps better (DHKMN & HRRPK). Mansoor Khan remains my best choice of course. His films are ageless (QSQT, JJWS). I didnt mind AHAT at all, but Josh was disappointing.
Wont be surprised if Aamir ghost directed HHRPK. It was after all his home production, with his father Tahir Hussain as producer. He had worked extensively with Robin Bhatt on the screenplay (and was also credited for that). He had previously worked on the script of QSQT with his chacha Nasir Hussain.
HHRPK was the first Aamir film I saw in theaters. Had liked it a lot – a complete clean family entertainer.

BOI is now trying to snatch the limelight away from Dangal with their rant on how it means nothing for the industry. While there may be some truth in that, but it is still encouraging others to try their luck in China. BB2 is already gearing up for China release and even Sultan may get released there, if not Tubelight. It is the second biggest market for cinema after US.
Aamir Khan films are likely to have big advantage in China over others. But that effect can only be gauged properly after Secret Superstar and TOH’s run in China. Dangal meanwhile is inching toward 1200 cr from China after amassing 300 M$ record and becoming the 5th highest non-english grosser in the world.

Not sure of exact procedure, but the distributors needs clearance from the government (where Tubelight may fail). It seems to be first-come-first-serve basis to fill up the quota after getting govt go-ahead.

Then they will have to line it up for 2019 release in China. Its same for Hollywood films too. Most studios try to get the govt clearance well ahead of their release, otherwise the release gets delayed. That is why simultaneous release in China is a big deal.

Merit is rewarded to those with consistency. Aamir’s track record in China is consistent. Other films need to step up or shut up. Other fan stars too.
It’s like unrewarding SRK for his feats in UK and US in late 90’s or early 00’s. His dominance was crystal clear, it’s other films and stars that were non performing in ‘general’.
Even though collectively Aamir and Salman are taking out all of SRK’s overseas records, history or chronological history will always show he was first there.
History will always show Uncle Aamir as a kind of pioneer for the Chinese market if it becomes big for Bollywood in general, he’s the one opening the doors. The triumph is not small. The discerning attitude is dumb. I assure you any other star like Salman, SRK, Hrithik or Akshay – all your comments would be different.

Last few films of both SRK and Aamir have released there. That means atleast SRK/ Salman/ Aamir can get a release there. There are talks that the quota system may be enlarge in the coming years. So definitely it favours Bollywood. If the quota is increases to say 7-8 films than major big canvas movies of a year would be accomodated.
A 25-30 million dollars in China market is a good total. That will increase the overseas avenues for Indian filmmakers which has a limit now.

25-30 million dollars from china is a huge deal as far as indian biggies are concerned. Srk/Salman films do at max 25 M$ total in all overseas territories these days.
The big bollywood films will get released in China despite the quota system. The problem is with small films (unless its a secret superstar kind of deal) that will get a raw deal and no release in China. But then how much did Srk’s Dear Zindagi do overseas?
Akshay is the one who really loses out with the China deal. His films wont stand a chance to even release there, except perhaps a rare 2.0.

I kind of agree with their main claim, but their pessimistic tone is a bit pre-mature. There was a point in the mid-nineties when SRK’s films broke out in US/UK. His romcoms used to make a fortune in overseas and slowly established a NRI market for bollywood films. It did not happen overnight after DDLJ, but happened over a span of time, with the initial years heavily skewed in favor of SRK. A similar trend may happen in China, its too early to be negative at this point.
Personally, I dont think BB2 is going to set China BO on fire, but have my hopes pinned on Secret Superstar. I doubt if Indian masala can breakout big in any crossover market, while realistic social films will stand better chance imo. TOH will be an ideal test for this hypothesis, as it has the Aamir advantage too.

Bhai log, India ke liye film banaao and focus to make good films to beat Baahubali’s record in India else it would stay for a decade, the way the previous genuine ATBB Hum Aapke Hain Koun / Gadar existed.

@jayshah,this is not the projection or forescast but this is the target given by chinese distributer plus diff bw Dangal and BB2 after china run wld be 50M$,plus u r forgetting Dangal is releasing in HK on 30.8.17 where it shld add 7-10M$ more and i m hearing BB2 release in China in Sep17,so both wld be running simaltaneously again.I can give a detailed explaination but…..
GOW, a chinese epic movie similar to BB2 wld end at less than 10M$.BB1 was also promoted by team in china.Promotion only works when u have a base like Aamir had and BB2 not.

It’s not Hindi with English subtitles, rather it’s Mandarin subtitles, and most of the imported movies in China are released in original sound track with Mandarin subtitles. There is not even 10% screenings of the dubbed version. It can be verified from maoyan ticketing portal of China, though it’s too late to track now. I am a Chinese language teacher, have been closely following Dangal’s boxoffice collection in China on various Chinese language boxoffice tracking portals. So far i have not come across a single Chinese friend who has watched dubbed version of Dangal.

Bahubali 2 completes 50 successful days at the box office
Bahubali 2 The Conclusion has completed 50 successful days at the Indian box office. The film is still collecting decent amount which is incredible.
Bahubali 2 Hindi version has crossed 505 crore and will finish in the range of 510-515 crore. While all India collection is over 1000 crore. The worldwide gross of the film is around 1600 crores.

Fantastic! Dark chapter of history which has never been told before. All kinds of movies have been made on 1993 and 2002. But none on 1975 or 1984, and the truth needs to be propagated.
People in general need to understand ke koi bhi doodh se dhula hua nahi hai.
That being said, the Ma-Beta of 1975-78 were infinitely more vicious than the Ma-Beta of 2004-14. But to the greenhorn Congis, this movie provides a template of comparison between the erstwhile Beta and Papu. And even more ironical that the true hakdaar, ie Beta of Sanjay is in BJP!!

Only Mr Right Star Akshay is missing here. Its easy to now make movies on the Emergency under the right rule (Baadshaho is also coming). But they also run the risk of showing one-sided perspective. The Singh biopic will be more interesting with another Mr Right Anupam Kher in it – make a movie on Congress PM just to highlight how evil the woman behind is? And then there is a biopic planned on Modi himself.

I think the high point of AKP’s journey so far has been its association with directors who are either making their debut (Aamir, Abbas Tyrewala, Kiran Rao, Anusha Rizvi, Abhinay Deo) or are relatively newcomers (Ashutosh Gowariker, Reema Kagti, Nitesh Tiwari). Even the next 2 productions are also with debutant Advait Chandan (Secret Superstar) and Mahesh Mathai (2 films old director for Rakesh Sharma biopic). This shows the strength and confidence of the production house. Never has it found necessary to work with established directors for BO safety.
BO track record of its films are also stellar, with every film a BO Hit except Dhobi Ghat which was not mainstream commercial cinema. Even then, Dhobi Ghat had an average run at BO and recovered its budget (around 5 cr) and P&A costs (another 5-6 cr) from the distributor share of its WW theatrical run itself.
Personally, my fav film of AKP is TZP. Lagaan and Dangal comes as close second. But role/acting wise I like Talaash and Dhobi Ghat (in that order) as the best. AKP films always brings out the best in him.

Outside, his performance in Fanaa standsout along with that of Kajol irrespective of the film’s merit. I feel serious roles bring out the best in him.

TZP is a fantastic film even though Aamir only had a supporting role. In Dangal, I felt his physical transformation has taken away the limelight from his acting and expressions a bit although they were bang on. It was just awesome to simply look at Aamir as the pot-bellied, white-haired, middle-aged father.
I am not sure of Fanaa. His acting in the first half as the romantic tourist guide reminded me of Mann (a film I did not like). But he was fine in the second half after it was revealed who he really was. The problem is that I never liked that film well enough to revisit, and it has been a while.

Outside AKP films, I am a big fan of him in Sarfarosh (and the film overall too).
And from his younger days I liked his acting in all Mansoor Khan films (QSQT, JJWS & AHAT). Looking back now, I find them a bit too earnest. But they still remain the best of his chocolate-hero days. I think overall his work on-screen is much better when he is also involved in the back-end film-making – be it in Nasir Hussain Films or in AKP.
I do hope he makes more films under AKP banner than wasting time in stuff like Dhoom 3.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal continues to smash records and create box office history. The film will be among world’s top 400 grossers of all time very soon.
As of 16th June 2017, Dangal is at 411th position in world’s highest grossers list. It just needs $3 million before it will enter into top 400. This is simply unimaginable as earlier none of Bollywood films were even in top 1000. Dangal is also 30th highest grosser of 2016 among all worldwide releases.

Such lists like popular/best/powerful etc. are always debatable and no one can get it right. I mean I see Ronaldo, but no Messi. Maybe because of charges he faces in Spain over taxes. Who knows? But anyways, what they have tried doing will never be perfect. But I have seen such wierd lists popping out in past with some other stars being in the list and their fans and media going hell and boasting about it. The reason why Tubelight may not release on June 23 in Pakistan as the Salman film is likely to pose serious competition to local films release on Eid. Two Pakistani films are slated to release around the same time — Yalghaar that is also getting an international premiere and another titled Sharaba.
Hirachand Dand, President of Indian Film Exporters Association said, “Of what I am hearing from the market sources Pakistani filmmakers are quite keen on protecting their films so that are trying not to have Tubelight release on Eid, when two other Pakistani films – Shor Sharaba and Yalghaar are releasing. There are chances that Tubelight will release on July 7. But as of now, it’s certain that the movie will not release on Eid in Pakistan. Tubelight is yet to be submitted to Pakistani censor board so, what eventually happens is yet to be seen.

Dangal lost out around 20-25 cr from Pakistan due to Aamir’s insistence of not removing India’s national anthem from the film as Paki censors demanded.

Haha, so many folks talk together and they hardly know facts even now.
Pakistan had banned Indian movies from Sep till Dec end. Dangal was NOT in contention to release. Even though they unofficially removed the banned after Dangal’s release, Aamir didn’t dare to be the 1st producer to send his movie to release in Pakistan fearing the backlash. Once the things got cooled down, Rakesh Roshan sent his Kaabil and it was the first hindi movie to be released in Pak after 4 months. Raees applied back of Kaabil but rejected Raees and it didn’t in Pakistan ever.
Later Dangal was submitted in March 2017 for a release and then where there reports of Pak censor don’t allow other National Anthems in the movie and they need to mute it and reports suggest that Aamir didn’t want to remove it. But it is not the same as releasing in Dec and no way it would have done 30 crores with full piracy and 99% of Pak folks have seen it. It is not same as releasing on same day of release.
Sultan did 30 crores coz it released on Eid in Pakistan too and with its muslim background, it did phenomenal. So just guessing that Dangal even in March/April would have done 30 crores is simply a fanatic expectation! Pakistan is not China, the piracy of Indian films is almost legal and even if releases a week or two, it will impact huge.
Now, Tubelight will impact a lot coz once the Eid festive has cooled down and releasing after 2 weeks and piracy will eat up majority of collections.

Talismanic Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has become the fourth highest international goal scorer among active players worldwide with his 54th strike for the country against Kyrgyzstan.
The magnificent goal he scored against Kyrgyzstan in India’s 1-0 win in the 2019 Asian Cup Qualifiers match in Bengaluru on June 13 has taken him past England striker Wayne Rooney (53 goals in 119 matches). Chhetri was playing in his 94th match.
Chhetri, who turns 33 on August 3, is currently behind Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (73 in 139 matches), Argentine maestro Lionel Messi (58 in 118 matches) and American Clint Dempsey (56 in 134 matches).
Chhetri’s strike rate is better than Ronaldo, Messi, Dempsey and Rooney. He has a goal per match ratio of 0.57 as against 0.525 of Ronaldo, 0.49 of Messi, 0.42 of Dempsey and 0.45 of Rooney.
Only Brazilian superstar Neymar Junior (0.68), Ali Ashfaq (0.68) of Maldives and Edin Dzeko (0.63) of Bosnia have a better strike rate then Chhetri.
Remarkably, Chhetri is also in the top-30 of the all time goal scorers’ chart (taking into account both retired and active players) and is certain to be among the top-20 when he decides to call it a day.
He would need to score just half a dozen more to reach 60 goals and that should put him in the top-20. Chhetri is expected to contunie for at least a couple of years and he has expressed his desire to play in the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates if India qualify for this flagship continental tournament.
Chhetri is also just six short of playing in 100 matches for the country and if he does that he will join former Indian football’s poster boy Bhaichung Bhutia who retired in 2011 after donning Indian jersey 109 times.
Chhetri had surpassed Bhutia’s record of most number of international goals – 43 — in 2013.

I happened to watch Dhoom 3 for second time as it was coming on TV. I had disliked it quite a bit when I watched it in theater, but this time I found it to be OK. Just another average bollywood big budget fare. I always held it against him for doing this particular film (and it took subsequent 2 v good films in PK and Dangal to let me forgive and forget). But revisiting it, I could see what Aamir wanted to do here and why it failed to deliver.
After doing an art-house film in Dhobi Ghat and a mainstream film for niche audience in Talaash, it was natural for him to do a risk-free big-budget commercial film with universal appeal. Jumping on the Dhoom bandwagon made sense at that time. More so when the script on paper was much more emotionally involved with a backstory for the antagonist(s).
But the end product suffered as the franchise template is too plastic to be taken seriously and to insert an emotional track into it. To do this successfully they needed to change the Dhoom format completely, which probably would have been too commercially risky for YRF. It needed to be a darker film and the glam and glitz quotient to be more subdued. And I think this was one Aamir film in recent times where Aamir may not have been too involved with the post production and the final cut (he instead had moved on to shoot PK).
Anyways, though I am kind of apprehensive about Aamir teaming up with Victor again, I am hopeful of a much better film in Thugs. The reason being that this film is completely free of the cliched Dhoom franchise format. The subject material has more substance and historical background to it. And most of all, Aamir has been involved in the scripting and prep stages of this film. I hope he is equally involved in the post production and making of the final cut. With Adi agreeing to 70% profit sharing with Aamir, I am confident that he will be more involved in the film-making aspects of Thugs than he was in Dhoom 3.

Hoping that they dont go for men flying around flying ships (or auto-rickshaws) during the action scenes or have the actors walk towards the camera in slow motion all the time. Even the material here screams for more realistic action scenes and sensible story-telling, which can be entertaining as well.
Dont understand why its necessary to indulge in Telegu style over-the-top masala. Also the song placements were quite poor and unnecessary in D3, hope that can be fixed too.

Talking about his character, he said, “It’s a fictional character. We are not intending to show a real life character. Virat is an outstanding captain and cricketer and he is a style icon as well so when you make something on those lines you take some sort of inspiration from it. still no excuse for this kind of terrible batting. This isn’t some sort of genuinely difficult track. it’s a pretty poor one in fact designed to facilitate batting. Not to take anything away from the Pakistani effort but they batted as if they were facing Lilee at Perth! But yeah Pakistan peaked at the right time and despite being weak on paper suddenly beat three (including India today) more favored teams. Eng and India vastly more so. And quite thoroughly.

It is turning out to be another low weekend at the Box Office as films are just not bringing in ample moolah. The combined collections of all Hindi films in the running, be it the recent ones [Bank Chor] or the holdovers [Raabta, Hindi Medium, Sachin – A Billion Dreams, Baahubali 2 (Hindi)] is less than 5 crore which tells the tale. There is a capacity of at least 25 crore available for Hindi films to earn across the country and the occupancy is less than 20%, which is a poor state of affairs.
Still, it is Bank Chor that is bringing in the best share amongst them all. The film may have seen mixed response coming its way but at least in certain theaters it is bringing in audiences. This was evidenced on Saturday too when collections improved marginally to 1.66 crore after a rather low Friday [1.40 crore]. A Y Films production, Bank Chor currently stands at 3.06 crore, which could have been a good number had it come on the first day itself.

Hindi Medium is continuing to do well and has now gone past the 66 crore mark. It is running at a very low number of screens and still bringing in collections even in the fifth week. Superhit.
Raabta is a Flop as there is hardly anything coming in the second weekend. The film has barely managed to touch the 25 crore mark.
Sachin – A Billion Dreams has found a show or two in certain theaters. It is set to conclude its run at 52 crore mark. Above Average.
Baahubali 2 [Hindi] is in its eight week and still finding showcasing at select theaters. It is collecting some moolah over its 510 crore score already. Baahubuster!
On Sunday, each of the films in the running would at best collect close to Friday numbers due to Blockbuster cricket match between India and Pakistan. Expect deserted look in theaters especially in the evening and the night shows.

Pakistan deserves to win. They peaked at right time. And they are a dangerous side, with a good bowling attack.
India MUST bat first. At worst they get 250 with still scoreboard pressure. I don’t think that decision is rocket science. The manner they have folded is what happens with scoreboard pressure.

Kohli rarely disappoints. I was a little annoyed at his choice to field but ultimately whatever decision you have to maximise your return. India didn’t bowl nearly as well as they could, Pakistan batted as well as they could and when that happens psychological momentum has shifted. Losing a wicket 1st over never helps.

yes losing would be acceptable but this kind of defeat is pretty inexplicable. It’s not as if this is Aus from the 90s. And again not putting down Pakistan, they played very well these last three games. But still there was no excuse for England batting that poorly or now India doing the same. And yes 339 was also too high a score to allow to this opposition. Kohli probably expected a Bangladesh kind of match.

Amir really sealed the deal of India having any chance of thinking about challenging that 338 total. The way he ripped thru the top 3 order…has to rank up there with all-time best spells, especially considering the quality of those batsmen. He is still in his prime…Im curious and excited to see how he handles this. Hasan Ali is another gem. The talent is there…now the structure needs to be solidified.

Thank you satyam…this is a longggg time coming. Loved the heart and passion this Pakistani team showed after that first Indian defeat. I like our coach’s mentality now…celebrate this a little but then now focus on WC 19. With everything the country has been thru (mostly self inflicted), its just great to see them celebrate and have a good time against their biggest rivals. We’ve got young talent…lets see how much they develop.
Congrats to India on yet reaching another ICC finals match…they are still the top team IMO…just need to add some bowling depth.

1 thing is clear from this tournament. Kohli’s captaincy flaws came to forefront. Pathetic bowling changes, bad team selection and bad toss choices, he’s bad at everything and still very stuck up to his wrong decisions. I’ve said it earlier too that he’s very wrong in analyzing the situations and picking up players for the particular matches and he has proven enough in this tournament.
I lost hopes for WC 2019 coz World Cups are not won by best teams but they are won by great captains. I don’t see him winning any major tournaments like Dhoni and unless there is great captain, you can never win huge tournaments. India is still a very very strong team but with a not so great captain who’s like the best ODI player in the world right now. Sachin was numero uno player too but wasn’t the greatest captain of the game.

Such behavior is expected in India and Pakistan. We are short-sighted countries and continue to jump like monkeys when we win something and act as though we are developed countries with no problems to solve except cricketing issues!!
However, I have to say this was a heart-breaking loss. Watching the camera focus on Kohli’s face who was standing at the boundry with a dejected, despondent look when Pakistan comfortably jumped to 300 was painful. It was pretty clear that he was cursing himself for having gifted the match away to Pakistan by way of the toss. This is NOT the Indian team we have known for a long, long time – and this is for sure not the player we have known. All the players including Rohit, Kohli, Yuvraj, and Dhoni were as though they were conked out.
And contrary to what everyone says, I don’t think Pakistani bowlers were outstanding. They weren’t even getting the ball to swing – thanks to the nothingness in the pitch. But what they were fantastic at was not getting over-excited and trying to over-do things. All the Indian players except Pandya came with a signature of loss written on their fore-heads. It was really like watching the Indian team from the ’90s where everything was dependent on Tendulkar’s act..
And this is the thing with Pakistan..no other team has made use of DUCK-WORTH LEWIS the way this team..They play mediocre in the initial stages, but jump stages due to one D-L equation; and then they win it!! They did it in 1992 world cup and they did it now…though they were almost at a winning stage with S Africa here..
One thing that EACH team needs to learn is you cannot ignore Pakistan once they start coming to the semi-finals…They will channel everything that they can, whether it’s religion or calling up folks they CAN’T get along with including senior players from the Pakistani side and get the job done…
And as I say, it’s not the fact that we lost to Pakistan but we lost to a team that only played better on the day that mattered..though they were showing signs of course of upping the ante with England and Srilanka..
On the day that mattered, Pakistan battered India, and congratulations to them.

Pakistan are so dangerous. Firmly think on subcontinent wickets any weakness in India’s bowling is nullified by batting. I argued hugely in 2011 with a friend that India will win WC as bowling attacks will matter little, deeper into a tournament this pendulum shifts to bowling as nerves give in. It’s a negative move to field first in a final – possibly rain is a good reason as DWL comes into play or if it’s a blatant pattern in a tournament that batting second is the way. Otherwise I reckon any score north of 250 keeps you in the game as you can take a wicket quick or even if opposition is 100-1 your still in a game. But chasing 300+, your a wicket and big partnership down already plus ANY slip up and you are struggling.
Penalty shootout in football – always go first as if it’s 4-4, you score – the opponent MUST score. You miss you still have a chance that they miss too.
Tie breakers in tennis – staying ahead of the game is important. How many sets are won at 5-4 up and returner breaks? That pressure of holding serve is huge – to stay in the match etc.
India – Pakistan is much more about mental wins, Kohli chickened out IMO. I love Dhoni but not being Captain and still playing in this ‘responsible’ way makes no sense. He needs to cut loose in general, yesterday’s game is not a yardstick but in general he is best when playing the Pandaya innings.
Overall Pakistan deserve it. They are great to watch in these stages as they are so fearless.

Congratulations to Pakistan team for playing fearlessly & displaying strong self-belief despite the initial loss to India. Complacency & over confidence did cause a big blow to team India’s overall performance in the final as they took Pakistan very lightly believing the repeat of the league match against them. Kohli needed this bitter pill to not get overwhlemed by his & team’s recent performances & come out of his smug & snooty self for good!!

Well looking at the “high stakes” in this match, Pak batting could not be trusted even with a low set target hence were asked by the Indians to bat first to ensure outcome remains in safe hands.

I completely agree with you ideaUnique as signs of his decline had been there with his continuous struggle to time the ball even in IPL matches & the pattern in which he has been getting out lately makes it ample clear that he is way past his prime which even he might be aware of but “to take the bold & selfless decision of retirement is very difficult as players tend to believe it as a temporary issue which could return in a matter of few matches (slump in form) as emotions supercede objectivity in such vital matters!!” I hope he retires gracefully rather than being forced upon as his contribution to Indian cricket has been immense & being axed would be the worst possible exit in his illustrious career.

Bollywood has repeatedly proved that there’s little correlation between on screen chemistry and off screen equation. The friendly banter that Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor have shared during their ‘Jagga Jasoos’ promotional spree, it seems, might merely be a front to pique the curiosity of cinephiles. Asked at a promotional event if she would sign another film with Kapoor, an otherwise elusive Kaif surprisingly revealed, “It’s very difficult. People now have proof that he is a very trying and testing person. Ranbir has also gestured [to me] to not work on a film together. It will never happen again.”

Hrithik Roshan to turn kabaddi player for his next?

Amidst talks of his forthcoming projects post Kaabil, there were only speculations about taking ahead the Krrish franchise. Soon, there were reports of the actor signing couple of films like one with Kabir Khan as well as him playing a mathematician. The latest film to be added on the list is a sports film.
Although there haven’t been many details on the same, we hear that the film will revolve around the subject of kabaddi. Of late, kabaddi has become yet another sport, like football and cricket, which has grabbed the attention of Bollywood stars who have been investing in teams. Interestingly, Ronnie Screwvala who owns the Mumbai kabaddi team will be producing the film.
On the other hand, it is yet to be revealed if Hrithik Roshan will be playing a real life sports persona like Aamir Khan in Dangal or Akshay Kumar in Gold or will he be donning a fictional avatar like Farhan Akhtar as a boxer in his next or Salman Khan in Sultan. While kabaddi as a sports genre hasn’t been explored in films before, it will also be Hrithik Roshan’s first sports film.
The other details like director and the rest of the cast are yet to be finalized.

She made her debut in Bollywood with Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Mohenjo-Daro but the film failed to impress the audience. Since then, we haven’t seen much of Pooja Hegde who is now busy with South projects. But latest reports claim that Pooja has finally signed her second Bollywood film.
While last time she was paired opposite the heartthrob Hrithik Roshan, this time around she is said to play the lead alongside Abhishek Bachchan. The film in question is said to be thriller which will be directed by Nishikant Kamat.
Earlier we had reported that the makers are keeping details of the film under wraps. Besides the fact that the film is produced by KriArj Entertainment, we hear that the film was supposed to go floor in summer as the makers were contemplating on releasing the same during winter, that is, by the end of this year.
Besides this, Abhishek Bachchan has about three films which includes Ronnie Screwvala’s next, Rajat Rawail’s Bachchan Singh as well as Prabhu Deva’s Lefty. On the other hand, Pooja is gearing up for the release of the Telugu film Duvvada Jagannadham which releases this week

Besides the fact that Ayushmann Khurrana and Sriram Raghavan are joining hands for the first time for a film, we had earlier also reported that Tabu too will be a part of the film. But this film, which is the filmmaker’s next after Badlapur has him reuniting with actress Radhika Apte for his next titled Shoot The Piano Player.
She played Vinay Pathak’s wife in Badlapur but her role in this film is yet to be revealed. On the other hand, this one too has quite a bit of actors including Vinay Pathak and Ashwini Kalsekar who were a part of Sriram’s last film, playing prominent roles.
A day ago, Ayushmann Khurrana shared the first look of the film on social media and also mentioned that went on floor in Pune. From what we hear, actresses Radhika Apte and Tabu will too join the actor this week to wrap up the first schedule of shoot in Pune.
It is being said that this schedule will stretch for approximately 20 days after which the team will be taking a break and they may resume by July end. Also, the film will have Sriram collaborating with his FTI friend and DOP K U Mohanan.

In the inaugural edition of Sankarabharanam Awards, Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Alia Bhatt also won top honors, along with Junior NTR and Dhanush, the organisers announced on Monday.
The award ceremony will be taking place in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Sankarabharanam Awards, formed in honour of filmmaker K. Vishwanath by actress Tulasi, will honour winners from five film industries which include artists from Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Explaining why the need to honour artists from five industries, Tulasi told IANS: “My guru and mentor Dadasaheb Phalke awardee, K Viswanath has worked with both the northern and southern industries in his illustrious career. He stands for the unity of our cinema, a beautiful aesthetic medium that knows no boundaries of geography or language.”
She added that though they will be awarding a much longer list of technicians and artists from Telugu cinema, “We have four categories across industries this year. This is because we had less time to organise the event this year. From next year, we will plan much in advance with a more uniform list.”
Tulasi confirmed Aamir Khan and Alia Bhatt have won Best Actor awards for their respective performances in Dangal and Udta Punjab.
Junior NTR has bagged Best Actor (male) for his performance in Janatha Garage.
Dhanush won the Best Director award for his Tamil directorial debut Pa Pandi.
Actor Dulquer Salmaan won the Best Actor (male) award for his performance in Malayalam film Oru Vadakkan Selfie.
Alia Bhatt who was seen portraying the character of a laborer who accidentally falls into a hell hole of drugs in Udta Punjab was lauded by everyone. She also won the Filmfare award this year for her strong performance in the film.
Aamir, on the other hand, gave a mind-blowing performance in Dangal, which won hearts in India as well as worldwide.

Salman Khan is all set for his big Eid release, Tubelight this week. Director Kabir Khan, who is known for making films that usually have a lengthy run time, will this time surprise us with his latest release. Tubelight we hear was earlier supposed to be a 2 hours 35 minutes film, although, during the post-production process, the film has been slashed to 2 hours 16 minutes.
If one looks at Salman’s previous films, this could be said to his shortest film in recent times. The actor was last seen in Sultan which was nearly 2 hrs 50 minutes, even Bajrangi Bhaijaan was over 2 hours 40 minutes. The 2015 Diwali release, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo event went on to as many as 3 hours.
It seems to be an informed choice on the part of the makers considering the multiplex audience, prefers to have a movie going experience for not more than 2 hours.
As reported by DNA, “Kabir Khan’s films are usually lengthier than the stipulated two hours that the multiplex-viewing audience favours. His last film Bajrangi Bhaijaan was nearly three hours long and worked just fine. Tubelight was edited and readied at a run time of two hours and 35 minutes. But the team decided to slash the film by 19 more minutes just a week before its release,” said a source.

So you thought it was going to be Ranbir Kapoor all the way in Raj Kumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt bio-pic? Wrong! There will be plenty of visuals showing the real-life Sanjay Dutt in the film.
Sources close to the film reveal that Hirani has got hold of extensive video footage from news channels and other sources showing the arrest of Dutt and other vital details from his controversial life. “They are using a lot of news reports and also home videos of Sanju’s childhood that Sanjay’s parents Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt shot” says a source.
Interestingly Sanjay Dutt hid “nothing” from Hirani. “He opened up his entire life to Raju. It was up to Raju what he wanted and didn’t want in the bio-pic,” says the source.

I am bit baffled by Jadeja – when it matters the most – he fails and then he keeps performing in test matches etc. – he has been a consistent failure as a batsman in limited over matches – why play him at all? Why not promot Hardik before him?

Add Ashwin to list as well as his ODI performances in last few matches have been lacklustre & has also failed miserably as a batsman in the limited over format. Overall record in limited overs is also just average as his average in the format is over 32 which is way too high considering he is India’s best bowler. His over dependency on spin friendly pitches makes him look like a club cricketer on piches not assisting him as was the case in the finals of champions trophy where he struggled to spin the ball & lacked the variation to trouble the batsmen.

From being the setting for songs and dances to becoming a pivotal part of plots, the depiction of sports in Hindi cinema has changed dramatically…
There’s an intriguing connection between Aamir Khan, the ‘Sports Movie’ and ‘The Cause’ in Hindi cinema. It started in 1990 with Dev Anand’s Awwal Number in which Khan hits the winning stroke for the country in a cricket match threatened by a terrorist bomb. Then came Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992). Here, Khan, the naughty underdog, won that gruelling cycle race for the greater glory of family and college. Almost a decade later came Lagaan (2001) which showed the hero hitting the most famous sixer in Hindi cinema for his village, country, freedom and throw-in-whatever-else-you-want. And then there’s Dangal (2016), where (via his daughters) he scores once more, with feeling, for country, boxing and women’s empowerment — proving that even when he’s kept away from the arena, you can’t seem to lose with Khan around. Not only has this Khan been a flag-bearer for the sports movie in Hindi cinema, you could trace the popularity of the genre in his career graph — a hesitant beginning, the build-up, the iconic moment and today, a veritable explosion.
Lagaan was a landmark in many aspects, one of which was the narrative use and cinematic depiction of a sport. And in the 15-odd years after the movie, sports films and biopics have been popping out non-stop from the Bollywood factory (see box). Apart from these flicks, we now await biopics on hockey legend Dhyan Chand and badminton champs PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.
If further (and perhaps final) proof is needed of the inroads sport has made in Bollywood, tennis queen Sania Mirza made her debut on Koffee With Karan this season — which, as you know, is as high as you get on the B-Town ladder. (For the record, Mahesh Bhupathi was the first sportsperson to grace the couch when he appeared with his actor-wife Lara Dutta Bhupathi.) And to think that, for the decades before Lagaan, Bollywood hadn’t focused too much on the sporting spirit. Dara Singh was the legendary exception of course, but his films were considered B-grade ones, not worthy of a high-ranking hero.
But the ’70s and the two decades that followed were a time when the formula film reigned supreme in Hindi cinema. And sports simply didn’t seem to fit in. How could the hero be seen in a large part of the film with sweaty skin and baggy sports outfits? What did one do with a heroine handicapped by no make-up (okay, very little make-up), no chandelier earrings, no teased-to-death hairdos? Plus, short skirts are sexy, but how many wardrobe changes would regular sports gear allow her?
So much easier to put Dharmendra in a gladiator-style costume and have him slug it out with his macho Punjabi muscles on display. (Those thunderous scenes and thighs now rank high in the camp filmi pantheon, which only goes to prove that Manmohan Desai knew what he was doing in Dharam Veer, (1977)).
Or you could use a bit of game playing to spice up a song picturisation. So make Jeetendra mince about a badminton court in his impossibly tight white pants, while singing Dhal Gaya Din and trying to kiss Leena Chandavarkar through a badminton net. Our heroine, resplendent in full make-up and a shiny pink silk outfit, made only one concession to the theme — she used her dupatta as a bandeau for her hair to show you that she was really serious about the game.

It was all so laughable — because Hindi cinema refused to take sports seriously. The considered opinion in B-Town was that sports sold on the field, not the box office. Though Mithun Chakraborty’s Boxer (1984) was the rare hit, the tepid reception to films like Awwal Number, Main Intequam Loonga (1982) or Prakash Jha’s Hip Hip Hurray (1984) proved the point. Even Maalamaal (1988), a movie that starred no less than Naseeruddin Shah and Sunil Gavaskar in a guest appearance, turned out so atrocious that it crashed. Any surprise then that Aamir Khan could find no producer to back a story about a bunch of villagers in dusty dhotis playing cricket on a maidan in colonial India? He had to eventually produce it himself. We should be grateful for his leap of faith — Lagaan, at once radical and straight from the heartland, would go on to change the rules of the game. And here we are today with Dangal, another rural nail-biter about sports, dreams and patriotism, that’s reportedly become Hindi cinema’s most profitable film ever.
So what’s changed? The short answer: a reality check. Middle-aged heroes still romance nubile young things (looks like that’s not going anywhere anytime soon) but no heroine in the movies today would dare step on a badminton or tennis court dressed like Chandavarkar. Whether it is hockey, boxing or wrestling, they step out looking the part with trained body language, correct sporting gear, and a clever no make-up look.
Indeed, the posters for Dangal and to a lesser degree, Mary Kom and Sultan, showed just how far the definition of the Hindi film heroine has grown. The Dangal girls, in their tees, tracks and close crops that would do an army man proud, are the antithesis of the traditional leading lady. These are women who are knocking men out on screen as happily as Dara Singh once did. The camera does not sexualise their bodies (though, interestingly enough, the same could not be said for Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag). If they have some make-up on during the game, it’s because many of their real-life counterparts like to dress up for the court today. Most importantly, they are women who go after what they want with a passion that is unapologetic and will not be stopped.
These heroines show us why great sports movies always go beyond the game. They respect the pursuit of excellence, they inspire us and they tell us a lot about the times we live in. There’s much to celebrate today besides India’s on-court victories.

I think Tubelight is a safe film even with its low buzz. It just needs 250 cr to make everyone involved happy, which should be doable considering it is a Salman movie coming on Eid. Even with poor WOM (if so), it should get to 250 cr due to the big opening it will take.

Tubelight Budget, Screen Count, Economics
One of the most anticipated projects of this year Tubelight is releasing this Friday. The film stars Salman Khan and Sohail Khan in the lead roles. It has been directed by Kabir Khan and produced by SKF.
Tubelight Budget:
As per the sources close to the film, Tubelight has been made on a budget of 95 cr (excluding Salman’s fee). The market value of Salman is around 55-60 crore so the actual value of the budget will be 150-155 crores.
Tubelight Screen Count:
It is releasing in approx 4400 screens in India. While in overseas it is likely to be the be the widest Bollywood release ever. The filmmakers are targeting to release it in 50 plus overseas territories and it is already the biggest release in some markets.
Tubelight Economics:
The makers are in the safe zone by selling the film at a record price. The non-theatrical recovery was also pretty good. Now it will up to NH Studioz to recover the high price. Tubelight will be a successful film for all parties involved after crossing 250 crores only.

Expectations:
Last year when we reported about Sultan, only sky was the limit as far the buzz was concerned. This is not the case with Tubelight which is probably due to the average promos. Though the buzz has increased after the release of couple of new tracks which hint at strong emotional content. It will be a good start if the film crosses 25 crore on opening day considering the pre-Eid release period.

The film till its 8th weekend has made a collection of 1070 crores nett (1379 crores gross) at the Indian box office, including all versions. In overseas, the film stands with a collection of approximately 311 crores.
Baahubali 2‘s worldwide collection now stands with a collection of 1690 crores. Looking at its current pace, it does not seem like the film will reach the 1700 crore mark.
Also, with the release of Salman Khan’s Tubelight this week, we are expecting the film to dominate in all circuits which could mean the end of Baahubali 2‘s run.

That’s what it looks on the outside…It could also be that 3 wise guys (Sachin, Saurav, VVS) thrust their friend into the hot seat without even properly assessing whether he had the experience for the coaching job considering he had no prior experience in that…And are now made to look silly with their hasty decision making…
We don’t know what actually happened. It could also be that 2 greats couldn’t see eye to eye on what they thought what was right for the team…

Kumble record as coach is pretty decent. Quite frankly Zidane had no ‘real’ experience but helped win back to back CL’s. I’d rather trust the humble kumble over the arrogance shown by some Indian cricketers of late. Your right no one knows the truth so suspecting the 3 wise guys who collectively are legitimate legends for Indian cricket is not a great position to take.

I am.sure zidane won his coaching badges and was the coach of their B team. Kumble got the job because he threw his hat in the ring..there was no reason to sack shastri had supported him. The real issue is the people who are doing thw decision making. What exactly have vvs saurav and Sachin shown in their role but ineptiitude. They sacked shastri for no reason got kumble in because he was a legend like how kapil was. He also failed as a coach..now I hope they don’t get sehwag in because he is a legend. There is no connection that a legend has to be a good coach. I am.not saying kumble was a bad one amd i am sure he is a nice and humble guy but i don’t think virat is the kind of guy who will compromise for Indian cricket however brash he looks. His work ethic is second to none and thats seen in the results. It could just be a case of two people just not able to work together though they did take us to no 1

Your character of Kohli is that of Kumble. I don’t think the 3 wise guys are brainless to make dumb decisions. They’ll be smart enough to know consequence. Their characters like Kumble are known for many years. Kohli is a junior comparatively.
Maybe they are too similar. But here it’s a shameful that the coach as in football is the scapegoat. Player power is not a good thing.

As alluded in many articles, Shastri was player coach; I don’t think he has long term vision and strategy for team. Same goes for Shewag. You could see it in Punkab Kings X1. With Kumble there was some strategy. With current lot in contention, I will prefer Moody as coach.
I still can not understand Kohli’s though process when Ashwin and Bumrah were allowed negative line of bowling in final and not asking Jadhav or Yuvraj when everyone was going for 8 runs per over.

Kohli’s crucial miscalculation was deciding to field, the rest were far less significant issues. Bhuvneshwar did bowl very well in the final overs though (had good figures even overall). Even Bumrah wasn’t bad. The score would have been much higher without these efforts. Not that it mattered in the end!

I’d expect nothing less! Every player loved him so clearly he’s genuinely hurt here. That boundary is very important. Most evidence points to player power here.
In any case making your best player Captain is not good. The cake then has a cherry on top. Tendulkar was THE wicket but then if your Captain is Ganguly or Dravid you have 2 important wickets and a problem of pressure is halved.

I think all this politics is BCCI’s old guard doing. Virat is just a pawn who was used to remove Kumble. All the leaks prior to Champion trophy was from BCCI because based on twitter comment, he received first notice of difference from BCCI yesterday. So, who was leaking the difference between Kohli and Kumble earlier? Kumble has asked for pay raises for players which probably has rubbed old brass in wrong way.

Completely agree player power is not a good thing..But sacking Kohli is not an option. It does look like the team is behind him..The best was to make them work together but if they cant see eye to eye no point. This is like Wasim and Waqar scenario..
I do think the 3 guys acted in too much haste to remove Shastri and the only reason for going with Kumble was because he was a great player.
The only saving grace here is unlike football, in cricket , the position of the coach doesn’t carry same weightage.
They can probably now ask Rahul to take over. He is doing a great job with the kids and has experience too. And most of these players have worked with him in India A or in IPL

These conflicts are inexplicable in nature. If you have personal issues in these sports it’s really pathetic to ‘support’ sacking of another. 11 against 1 well one day that 1 might be Tendulkar or Dravid – much loftier names and Kohli will look like an idiot. Partly does anyway.
Zidane is a different story. He’s only managing Ronaldo not Madrid. You manage Ronaldo you really start to get Madrid working optimally. No one has managed to manage Messi as he always plays. You need a strong manager for this like Guardiola now.
Kohli will eventually need managing. He’s got an ego. Dhoni didn’t really, only in WC FINAL did he show an element of ‘im doing this alone’. Sacking Kohli is possible – you still have a batsman, one ‘fired’ up to go all out. Now you have one who gets his way.

A final is different. Plus a lot of those matches had weather in mind. London has been scorching hot last few days. In England weather in summer can be iffy, so even some sunshine with rain later is possible. But Sunday was not one of those days. It was a disgusting muggy hot day.
A final is simply different to any match. Anything can happen. I can bet Australia would never bowl first especially if your weakness is bowling and strength batting. The attitude of ‘we’ can chase anything down’ is arrogance. 2003 India did that they got smashed with a record chase required. Here they got something similar. Pakistan were improving, they chased down SL target with some ease.
Personally think the toss is non debatable. Obviously once you choose to bowl you need to do it well. That’s obvious! You also need to chase well! India messed up on both fronts.
Also how can the coach be blamed for any of this? A lot points to Indian players being spoilt rotten with money in a post Tendulkar era. The riches reaped in that era are demanded now.
I can understand Greg Chappell not being taken to. But one of India’s truly loved unsung heroes makes little sense.
This is not Kohli bashing. He is a deserving player in Indian team and the main reason India got to final with a series of not out innings. But I reckon the captain should be in the firing line here more.

Coaches in football are paid a premium for these very reasons! Shamefully you need a CV of Ferguson to do a proper job. If Indian Captain was Rahane I reckon this would not be an issue as much. Kohli’s position now is on the line big time. He’ll have to make sure the next coach is given respect otherwise it’s obvious what’s going on even though it already is!

A captain takes the brunt in case toss is the reason for a defeat no doubt but i am sure the entire team management decides on what to do in case toss is won. Its never a decision of one person.
More importantly toss is a reason only in hindsight. Both SA and BD were must win games and we fielded after winning the toss. Had Bumra not bowled that no ball, we might not even be talking about the toss.

FYI I do think it’s a team decision on toss. I’d be surprised if only Captain makes choice. But maybe in this case Kohli went his own course? Another maybe or if…no one knows. The only things coming out are very positive things on Kumble. Very little nice things are being said on Kohli – in the absence of being present or inside knowledge most people defer to these things and it seems Kumble is being made a scapegoat and treated like mud.

A lot of things are discussed (or not) but it is ultimately the captain’s decision.
A final is always a different situation. Chasing in a final is very different from chasing in any other match. A number of cricketers have commented on this.

The other thing I’d say here is (still responding to Krish) that when Pakistan bowled out SL and Eng for paltry totals (I didn’t expect them to win either match) and then when they really batted well against Eng it was obvious they were peaking at the right time or were at least extremely dangerous at that point in the tournament. Kohli possibly didn’t account enough for this. Of course these things happen in a game. Sometimes you get disproportionate praise for winning, the same for losing. It’s not unfair when the same thing happens either way. Kind of like an actor who looks like a genius as long as the films are working and the like the biggest fool when they’re not. In any case second-guessing the toss has always been one of the most common things in cricket commentary.
By the way and since we’re all wise men and women after the game (!) I’ll add this bit. I felt this a bit in real time as well. Kohli should have taken a chance and saved his wicket when the first one fell so quickly. I would have been tempted to send Yuvraj in. The latter’s weakness has sometimes been susceptible against spin, not pace very much. Which is not to say he couldn’t have gotten out. Obviously Aamir was bowling superbly and the bowler sometimes has his day (we’re less used to this today than we once were because most pitches favor the batsman so heavily.. though Pakistani pace bowlers often prosper on precisely these kinds of ‘subcontinental’ tracks.. some of the good Indian bowlers too are at times much more effective than much better bowlers from elsewhere.. in any case Eng prepare these kinds of tracks for most of their one days which is why they score massively quite regularly in Eng). But Kohli has been a bit susceptible to swing, even the very limited kind on this sort of track. After his disastrous Eng you he admitted to having trouble with outswingers. He said he’d been expecting the in-swinger each time he got the out-swinger. Now this is a diplomatic way of putting it. I personally don’t think he’s still solved the problem though he says he’s worked on his technique. I guess a future Eng tour will show whether he’s right or wrong. In any case when he then did hugely well in Australia everyone said he’d solved the problem. But it’s not the same kind of bowling. He did have trouble against Aamir’s movement. I think he did the responsible captain’s thing and batted in his usual position. However having lost a wicket so early it might not have been a bad idea to save this most valuable wicket. perhaps Yuvraj would have gotten out early as well but it was a chance worth taking. On that note this was true of an older team as well. In fairness I should add that very few batsmen today (for a while now) are comfortable against swing and for the simple reason that they don’t encounter it very often. The kinds of conditions that were once devastating in Eng and even average bowlers could sometimes be match winners. Leaving this aside you have Pakistanis on subcontinental tracks. And this is why you see with fair regularity their bowlers being devastating for a few matches or a few years (depending on how long they last). They’ve had this tradition for decades and they’ve mastered it. When they’re on song most batting lineups have trouble against them. At any rate not many batsmen are that great in these conditions. Sachin of course had no weakness in this sense but Dravid was very good too (which is why he really prospered in Eng, in fact on pure numbers he’s better than Sachin in Eng). But this wasn’t true of many of the other important names in that team. It takes really sound technique to get through a good spell of swing bowling and again most batsmen today are just not exposed to this enough. Kohli needs to have a strong Eng tour at some point to really become ‘complete’. He himself recognized this after the last tour, that he really needed to work on his technique.

My guess is they didn’t even contemplate losing Sharma so quickly. Personally think Pujara or someone of that ilk needs to be in this side. To steady the ship, steer from danger, rebuild and let others counter attack. A Hussey type or you just counter with Yuvraj. Dhoni is useless in this role. If he plays 2011 final style then fine.

Blaming Kohli is the easiest option to do in this. He looks brash, is aggressive, wears his attitude, is the exact opposite of how we like our role models to be (and you are even saying that he decided the toss on his own, Were we ever going to bat first after the previous two games). I expect these insinuations to be directed at him more so because he cant defend himself.
But what we are missing is that inspite of all that, he is crazily committed to the team. He is probably the fittest in the team, runs like crazy between the wickets, is probably the one who does the extra yards in the gym, is ultra discplined in his eating habits and is a complete professional. The very fact that these differences didnt make him perform badly as a team or individually shows professionalism. And this has been said by his peers or coaches about him…Kumble we know is equally committed and humble and is a legend so blaming Kohli who is not as big as Kumble is the easier way out.
But it is very much possible that two players just didnt see eye to eye on things and decided not to work…One of them need not necessarily be wrong. Two contrasting ways of handling the team can cause friction and both can be correct in their ways.

No one is denying Kohli’s work ethic. They are questioning his intentions as a character in the dressing room and the efforts he made to work with Kumble. If he chooses not to speak some will approve (as he’s not dragged it out publicly), some will want a response or explanation etc.
E.g. the same label you applied to 3 wise guys is perfectly plausible in the current Indian dressing room. That there are factions and groups who are powerful and insecure to push out a coach.

Boycott is hilarious, seriously the best ‘colour’ commentator today. He is brutal and often right. As I said the weather was smoking hot, it was the Oval – absolutely daft decision. No amount of defense can get away from that. Anything after is a consequence of this decision. Blame a no ball or whatever but this was the worst decision on the day. I’m glad Kohli is getting his now. I remember Nasser Hussain made a similar shocker in an Ashes series and he’s reminded the same many a time.

I chucked when I read this. Folks in India need to be introduced to some of these concepts. Everyone pretends these ‘laws’ don’t exist for Bollywood movies. All kinds of totals are thrown out and no one does the actual accounting on them. When it’s something as massive as Dangal or BB2 obviously there’s no doubt about what the actual picture (no pun intended) is. With everything else one has to take these factors into account. Of course (and I am saying this only for the millionth time) all of this begins in India. 99% of the figures that are reported by everyone (yes everyone) are the stuff of fiction. Even when the actual numbers (talking about production, distribution costs versus gross/net figures) are in the ballpark the way they’re presented is completely false. Again when it’s a massive hit or a total failure it’s relatively easy to know what’s going on. But otherwise things are much more complicated.

I wish Indian BO analysis was done in such great detail. Instead all we get are ball-park numbers be it collections, distribution price, P&A costs, shares, etc etc. It only gives a vague idea of what is actually going on at the ground level. Of course the 300 cr grossers benefit everyone in the distribution chain and producers too. But for an average grosser, it is pretty much muddy waters. Most of the time there are losses for the sub-distributors involved. Sometimes such reports come to the surface (recently there were some reports abt losses in the chain for both Kaabil and Raees – despite both doing average business).
I think Bollywood is overall reluctant to expose BO and movie economics transparency. If they do, very few films can be counted as successes and that would damage the reputation of the industry (and of course star egos).

The astute captain and coach in Kumble waited till the team had taken off and were well away in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean before let off the bombshell in the shape of a well-considered and prepared statement.
Even then, he did not call a press conference or leave himself open to questions. At the same time, he was categorical in his criticism of Kohli.
The timing was perfect in the sense that even if Kohli wanted to respond, he would only be able to do so once he reached the West Indies, a good 10 hours’ flying time away, and then some.
By that time, public opinion would be formed and cemented.
The master tactician bowled a great over, which left even a great batsman like Kohli struggling for timing.

All the 90’s and 00’s greats were quiet unassuming types except Ganguly. Sehwag is outspoken since retiring. Harbhajan obviously was a ratty fella. Yuvraj maybe fiery. But Tendulkar, Kumble, Dravid, VVS, Dhoni were all cool customers. Steely but calm. Driven but not overly vocal. Well mannered and gentlemen.
Kohli is bit like Ganguly but as he is the #1 player in his generation he has more leverage than Ganguly who lets face he was not in Dravid or Tendulkar’s or Sehwag’s league. He had incredible moments but he ushered in the captaincy required to challenge Australia. Kohli has too much power being THE MAN + CAPTAIN. And he needs a humbling moment to remind himself he is not bigger than the Indian team or coach.

Elite sports stars who want to stay on top NEED this. It’s simply called experience. They’ve been there done that BUT know what was missing to get one level up. Beyond this tennis players like Djokovic and Murray change coaches as when your late 20’s – marriage, children can really affect performance. You need a strong coach to keep it going.
I’d say the Zidane-Ronaldo to Kumble-Kohli / India is apt here. Krish is right that Kumble has a lovely character vs. Kohli so naturally he’ll find support. But thats Kohli’s battle to fight. He may also be right that 2 people just don’t get along. But this is not Captain vs. Coach. Kumble is a team coach not just Kohli’s. Quite frankly he’s the expert and the team should be following his orders – if results don’t fly then sack him.

Abhinav Bindra is fool to respond and get into this controversy. I’m on Kumble’s side too but this is taking it too far. Let me talk in support of Kohli here.
Firstly, Kumble is not Kohli’s personal coach and is a team coach. Kohli has his own personal coach,Rajkumar Sharma and he TOO has not changed him for 19 years now. Team coaches come and go every few years, its not big deal. Even if captain likes someone or dislikes someone, they keep changing. It is not same as personal coach.
Kumble was given the 1 year contract and the extension always depends on Captain’s feedback as he’s going to lead the team in WC 2019. If he says, he’s not completely comfortable under this coach, they will not extend him, simple as that. After all it is more of Kohli’s responsibility to win the WC 2019 than any of the coaches appointed. Coaches can be replaced left and right but we can’t replace Captain as easily for a cricket team.
Only way I’m disappointed is how the things were handled with Kumble but if you know the history.. majority of the team coach-es were removed abruptly and without notice. Kumble had a perfect let-go at the end of his official contract and not terminated. He just didn’t get additional extension after his 1 year trial period.

If Captain feedback was important then he should have been consulted when Kumble was appointed. This is a classic case where you love some one and you are forced in marriage with some one else and you don’t like it from start…Kohli wanted Shastri to continue but CAC put Kumble in charge. For outside world things look rosy (number of wins) but internally marriage was not working from start.
I want to fault the process of selection..CAC should have listened to team..what players expect from coach…If the player expectation is something not sportsman like then they should be kicked out of team…Now ask for application for coach and get their ideas…whoever has good long term vision and players views are accommodated..we are golden..

You are talking about marriage literally here. Just coz you have great script doesn’t mean, you’ll be a great director (as in movies).
If you go back to last year’s news, it was mentioned that reports mentioned that BCCI was not 100% sure if Kumble was the right coach for WC-19 and that’s why he was given ‘trial run’ of 1 year contract. If things fall into place and Captain/Team get along with coach well, they will continue till world cup. I mean, on paper everyone might have liked his plans but he might be bad at executing them. They could have directly given him 3 years if all liked his plans but giving 1 year contract certainly showed some reservations about his approach. They gave 1 year that if things don’t fall into place, the new coach will have at least 2 years before WC to get used to the team and work along well. Everyone is quite aware that Kohli’s choice was Shastri and if they wanted to place Kumble, he had reservations. Maybe the 1 year term was the consensus between Kohli and BCCI/Committee to see if this works fine and he agreed on that condition.
So, if Kohli is asked for his opinion now, he will give his choice and that is not Kumble. There is 99% chance it will back to Shastri.. all the coach applications and Shastri not applying is trivial, he’ll be appointed IMO.

Salman’s logic is that only way to beat Aamir is by increased volume. So he will now do 3 films a year, while he thinks Aamir only does one film in 3 years. Coincidentally, Aamir now has 3 films in various stages simultaneously (SS in post-production, TOH in production and Salute in early pre-production stage). He is not only going to have one release each year, but is also involved with the film-making aspects of all these films. Salman probably doesnt understand or care about this, since he knows that his crazed up fanbase will digest whatever he throws at them.

They tell of the star spinner who opted to sit out the IPL, not because his injury was debilitating or his recovery slow, but because he was doing an Achilles and sulking in his tent because he believed his franchise hadn’t given him his due. They talk of the coach questioning how a player, who for whatever reason had abstained from limited-overs cricket for the better part of five months, could walk back into a pivotal position in a crucial tournament.
They tell of captain and coach disagreeing about whether various legends with storied pasts were batting at positions a bit too high for their current form, leaving the middle order enfeebled. They talk of the coach’s insistence on discipline – on turning up at the right time in the right gear for practice, for team meetings, and contributing in full measure to both.
And they talk of an incident from the warm-up phase of the tournament. Kumble, insiders say, had made meticulous notes while the team was in the middle, then spent time with the video analyst to pull up relevant clips relating to how individual batsmen and bowlers had performed and what, in his opinion, could be done to improve. He collated these clips, created extensive notes for each player, and slipped the notes and videos under their doors late that night. A couple of days later, he discovered that the notes had remained unread, the videos unwatched. And that triggered a dust-up – shortly after which word first began to spread about unrest in the dressing
“It really depends on individuals, how they want to prepare against certain players in the opposition,” Kohli said at a press conference on the eve of the Champions Trophy final. “I have never believed in watching too many videos of anyone. I prepare the best way I can… I believe in my abilities and I don’t take extra pressure.”
Fair enough – coaches and support staff can only lead horses to water; whether they drink or not is up to them. And yet, there is a good reason video analysis – the one tool that helps you avoid the mistakes of history – has become central to cricket coaching (or, indeed, to player preparation in any sport) these last two decades. And any modern coach, in any sporting discipline, would be derelict in his given duty if he did not do due diligence and share his findings with the players he is tasked to mentor.
Late into the night of April 2, 2011, the Indian dressing room at the Wankhede Stadium was awash in champagne as “the boys” celebrated their six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the final of that edition of the ICC World Cup. MS Dhoni, eminence grise of the current one day team, senior statesman Yuvraj Singh and star-in-the-making Virat Kohli will remember this: in the thick of the celebrations, Sachin Tendulkar and a couple of others went off to find Anil Kumble, brought him into the dressing room and gave him the trophy to hold, to the accompaniment of much cheering.

There is no chaser in world cricket like kohli..i think he has chased 280 plus score some 10-12 tomes and ended with tons. There are always areas one can improve. Totally agree. Decision making starts at top. The idea that a committee is formed and selects a new coach is not odd but against the rules of the way to select it is dubious. Still think there is no reason for disagreement Day 1.

Are you an Indian cricket fan who is crushed by the defeat of your national team to the one from Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final? Then I will tell you what happened today.
Today, we saw the defeat of people who were arrogant in one victory and took a jingoistic approach to the game. Today was the defeat of hyper-nationalism, of jingoistic news anchors, commentators, ex-cricketers—basically anyone and everyone who turned this match into another opportunity to ridicule and insult Pakistan.
It was a defeat of those war-mongers who spew venom online and offline and turn every India-Pakistan match into a proxy battle. Today was a spectacular defeat of some loudmouthed news anchors, forever-frothing-in-the-mouth former military veterans turned TV commentators, politicians of a particular ideology, former cricketers whose bats no longer do the talking but their Twitter handles do, and a host of other people who were bombarding your Facebook and Twitter timelines with Father’s Day memes and telling you that you were either with the Men in Blue or “Terrorists in Green”.
Yet there is a lesson to be learnt in this defeat. No, this isn’t about our cricket team. They will win some, lose some, and learn their own lessons. But those outside the pitch will have to learn to be humble in victory and graceful in defeat. They will have to learn that arrogance always takes one down. They will have to learn that this new kind of hyper-nationalism that they believe is kosher isn’t going to take the country anywhere; it will only make you the butt of jokes and ridicule, as nature has its own way of giving it back. They will have to learn that hate begets hate and only love can unite hearts. And they will have to learn to be good human beings first, Indians or anything else later.
So now, let us celebrate the grand victory of a sport that’s dear to over a billion people in the subcontinent. Today, cricket won. Today, those who love this sport genuinely won. Nothing else matters. Congratulations, Team Pakistan! And Men in Blue, we love you even in your defeat.
Let the ‘gentleman’s game’ remain true to its name, please.

One of the members of BCCI’s three-man Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) met as many as 10 players during the recent Champions Trophy to seek feedback on head coach, and not even one player was in favour of Anil Kumble continuing on the job, mid-day has learned.
Sources also said some players had even stopped following established protocol implemented by Kumble during his reign as coach.

“There were some rules he had put in place from his first tour last year, which were ignored during the Champions Trophy,” a source disclosed.

Virat Kohli may have refused to admit that India buckled under pressure against Pakistan in Sunday’s Champions Trophy final here at The Oval, but he might be the first to admit that it was the demands of coach Anil Kumble that led to the fallout between the Indian captain and him.
“He was putting too much pressure on the players,” a member of the Indian team told mid-day before departing to the West Indies.
Kumble, who quit as head coach on Tuesday, was apparently putting the players under the pump far too much and had ‘unrealistic’ expectations which created a negative vibe in the dressing room.
It is also understood that when a member of the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) met as many as 10 players during the tournament, not a single member was in favour of Kumble continuing as coach.
The cracks appeared to surface during the Champions Trophy when some protocol implemented by Kumble during his reign as coach were not followed by the players. “There were some rules he (Kumble) had put in place from his first tour as coach in the West Indies last year, which were ignored during the Champions Trophy,” a source disclosed.
While the source didn’t specify the rules, he hinted that Kumble’s style of functioning had led to less freedom compared to when Ravi Shastri was in charge as Team Director from 2014 to 2015-16.
It may be recalled that Kumble came into the reckoning at the last moment when Shastri was all set to become coach last year. Reportedly, the former leg-spinner was told to apply for the post by Ganguly.
While it is not known when Kumble told the players about his decision to step down as coach, the fact that batting coach Sanjay Bangar handed out a lot of the instructions during the practice session before the final at The Oval was a strong indicator that Kumble had been side-tracked as early as last week.
Differences with coaches are not unprecedented in Indian cricket. In 1996, Sandeep Patil was sacked as coach after only six months into the job. It was reported then that the players did not approve of Patil, who was replaced by S Madan Lal.
The biggest coach issue concerned Greg Chappell, who had major differences with captain Sourav Ganguly in 2005.

I dont think the buzz is low here. Salman movie on Eid is an event (a religious one and pun intended) and is likely to fetch 200 cr in first week. Rest will depend on how the film is. If its watchable like Sultan, it can add another 100 cr in the remaining weeks to get to 300 cr.

Currently there is a lot of noise about BJP wanting Akshay to play NaMo in the upcoming biopic. The movie will of course be used as a promotional campaign for general elections in 2019. Just doing a film on Toilet building has given Akshay so much of political advantage.
On the other hand Aamir and his SMJ team has done a lot of ground work on water conservation through Paani Foundation to make rural Maharashtra drought-free. This effort has hardly made much headlines, as its a BJP state. Here is an old interview where Aamir expresses his political views on Gujarat happenings. I believe this was during the time-frame of Narmada controversy which led to a ban on Fanaa’s release in Gujarat.

Well, he has done blasphemy. No doubt BJP looks at him with suspicion! Meanwhile let him continue with good work without getting into muddy political waters and work on good films like Dangal. It is really commendable that he gave such a performance in Dangal and made that film when the atmosphere was so toxic with his being termed as anti national and desh drohi.

This was before even Mangal Pandey release. This was Aamir’s first set of interviews after long gap and was done in April 2005. Mangal Pandey released in Aug 2005. What Aamir said in this interview was not even considered controversial and it was a generic opinion all through the media about Gujarat riots and Modi. The whole narrative changed slowly and as Modi kept getting powerful in the BJP ranks. I don’t think Aamir would say something similar even in his dream now and to be fair you can’t say that about the current PM of the country.

27 years of Dil (1990)!
Dont remember watching it in theaters (probably watched it in VCR). Not a big fan of this movie. But somehow this turned out to be his biggest hit after QSQT in his chocolate-faced days (pre-Rangeela). His other 2 hits in the early nineties (DHKMN and (HHRPK) were not as big as Dil at BO. But his best film in that phase was perhaps JJWS which had an average run at BO and was a moderate success.

Film’s CD reminds me of my uncle a hardcore Mads fan. Film has not aged too well, like HAHK this was Madhuri’s film all the way, kind of revived the vibe for Aamir in that QSQT mode much needed.

Yes, Dil kind of stabilized his career among lots of flops during 1989-90. In that way it was an important film for him.
But it really has not aged well. I guess Indra Kumar’s direction was too loud. Mahesh Bhatt was perhaps better (DHKMN & HRRPK). Mansoor Khan remains my best choice of course. His films are ageless (QSQT, JJWS). I didnt mind AHAT at all, but Josh was disappointing.

Wont be surprised if Aamir ghost directed HHRPK. It was after all his home production, with his father Tahir Hussain as producer. He had worked extensively with Robin Bhatt on the screenplay (and was also credited for that). He had previously worked on the script of QSQT with his chacha Nasir Hussain.
HHRPK was the first Aamir film I saw in theaters. Had liked it a lot – a complete clean family entertainer.
