Aamir Khan’s Dangal has been phenomenal at the Chinese box office. The film is still adding moolah and currently stands with a collection of approximately 1208 crores at the Chinese box office. It has already become the first Indian film to make such a huge collection in China.

The sports drama has impressed the audiences in India as well as overseas. Dangal’s worldwide collections now stand at 1992 crores which is huge.

  4. This shows the real class/crassness of Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli deletes welcome tweet for Anil Kumble after his resignation
    INDIA SAMVADINDIA SAMVAD
    22 JUNE 2017 09:28 GMT

    New Delhi, June 22
Indian captain Virat Kohli has taken the world by surprise by deleting his welcome tweet for ex Team India head coach Anil Kumble.

After Kumble’s appointment as coach in June 2016, Kohli had tweeted: “Heartliest welcome to Anil Kumble Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian cricket with you”. The tweet was pretty much there till last night, but was deleted this morning.

While Kohli has deleted his tweet, Anil Kumble’s reply still exists.

Kumble, who resigned from the post recently had mentioned that the reason for his stepping down was that the captain did not like his style of coaching. Kumble was appointed head coach in 2016, just ahead of India’s tour of West Indies.

The last time Kohli spoke on the issue was before their Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan where he quashed the reports of his alleged rift with Kumble as mere rumours. Since then, Kohli was kept mum.

The latest revelations clearly shocked the Indian cricket fraternity and fans who have now been able to identify certain aspects of the sordid saga deriving opinions through the clarifications from Kumble and the BCCI.

This response is obvious and far too dirty to get into. You place a Captain or Coach. You support them 100%. The spirit is not to give threats. Ultimately the interests of Indian cricket is the priority.

Obviously Kohli has to prove something. No need for it to be public.

      • Either the BCCI should have stuck with Kumble or if they didn’t there’s no point in adding extra pressure on Kohli. They’re constantly leaking stuff and as usual making things worse.

On the toss not surprised Kumble thought that! It was the most reasonable choice under the circumstances. and this is not like being wise after the event. It’s the sort of thing many captains do in this situation.

It’s a default position unless for any unusual circumstances. BCCI are really something. Damage control required immediately. Seems to me the only option is give Kohli who he wants as he’s already dug his own grave – sink or swim. His value as batsman is crucial more than captaincy. Off the record it should be clear that he must make it work.

It really does feel Kumble has got shafted to the extent he’ll never go for this job again.

Its amazing the kind of reaction one defeat can have in India and Pakistan. Any other country will take this defeat and not make hasty decision right after it. Its obvious that Kohli knows that he has a lot of power (and player backing) which is why he is willing to take on BCCI. He has shown to be a really good captain (one game does not decide anything). I think at the end Kohli will get the coach he wants but I am sure that BCCI will have a private chat with him to calm things down.

Kabir seemed to have started on an ambitious project but filmed it too soon and this is one of the biggest issue with Salman these days with all his multitasking….trying to meet deadlines and release strategies. Ideally movies should be properly scripted, fine tuned, filmed as per requirements and then only a release strategy be devised and not the other way round.

  14. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) Is Mission Impossible For Others
    Wednesday 21 June 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bahubali – The Conclusion is coming to the end of its run and it will be a 508 crore nett (705 GROSS) finish and it has probably stopped the trend where all time records are broken every few years. This is because films like PK and Dangal were doing phenomenally well but they were not those great ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTERS which got 5 crore people to the theatres like a Sholay, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun or Gadar which led to these films holding records for years. There will be so many huge films in the next 2-3 years that will be expected to challenge Bahubali – The Conclusion but the sort of cinema being made by our industry means Bahubali – The Conclusion is a safe bet until the ticket rates get high enough for a 525 crore nett figure to come with 3.5-4 crore footfalls. The new GST tax may help a little if that is the only tax but then the comparison becomes GROSS as the box office dynamics have changed and 700 crore GROSS won’t be there.

There will be talk about if the content is great then the records will be smashed but its not exactly about CONTENT here but CONVICTION. There is a type of storytelling which delivers huge numbers which we have seen with Dangal or Bajrangi Bhaijaan and then you add the formula cinema with melodrama which Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal have but subtly. A Bahubali – The Conclusion celebrates this cinema unabashedly without subtly and thats the difference. The content of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal cannot be faulted in any. Bahubali 2 is basically on the lines of a Suraj (1966) or a Dharam Veer (1977) and many others where a prince goes to a neighboring area and falls in love with a princess who is loved by a joker prince. The prince proves to be the hero and wins the girl and brings her back but his family members have stirred up trouble and he looses his crown which he has to get back. Its a simple story done many times in the history of our cinema.

This sort of cinema today needs conviction more than at any other time as there is a very fine line of it falling flat on its face and being ridiculed or becoming Bahubali – The Conclusion and the fact is that no filmmaker in the Hindi film industry will have this conviction as won’t believe in this cinema, and if you don’t believe in it then you can’t make the audience believe. The great filmmakers of Hindi cinema like Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Raj Khosla, Manmohan Desai and Manoj Kumar had this conviction and that is why they had such huge blockbusters similar to Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion. These guys must have around 10-12 films between doing 4-5 crore footfalls or even more. There were no other forms to watch films then like television or video but this is equaled up by the fact that the population has doubled since then.

At the time these legends made films it was an audience and today this audience has become single screen audience, multiplex audience, big city audience, small city audience, evolved audience, leave your brains behind audience and what not. When an audience is divided in such a way where will the conviction come as everybody may say they stay true to the script but the fact that this audience may not accept that or that audience may not accept this is there no matter what anyone says. When the thinking is that the audience is one these things become secondary. This is actually what Bahubali – The Conclusion proves that its still just an audience and a good film will work with all. In fact not just Bahubali – The Conclusion but any blockbuster proves this but at varying levels. The level of Bahubali – The Conclusion will only come if makers believe in this type of cinema, the audience does as can be seen in the results but its pretty certain that no big Hindi film director will green light a story like Bahubali – The Conclusion.

There will be people in our industry that will see the grandeur and scale of the film as the reason for its huge success and if one attempts to replicate on this belief it will lead to disaster as in our cinema the story and the way its told holds much more importance. Simply put the Bahubali – The Conclusion numbers are here to stay for a long time, in time its 508 crore nett will be crossed but those 5.25 crore footfalls is another mission altogether.

Although its a long shot, the hope is that one of our Hindi filmmakers pulls in over 5 crore people into the theatres and gives that historic blockbuster as this will change Hindi cinema for sure and for the better. At the moment, the industry sees S.S. Rajamouli at another level and playing in a different league in a different industry so it does not change much but when one of your own guy goes and does the unthinkable then the picture does changes as others believe we can also achieve that. .

    • All of BOI’s pro-BB2 talk is more or less a way of dealing with Aamir’s biggest grossers. There’s nothing more to it. Now one could say many things about BB2 and many of us here have said it but BOI is once again using it as an excuse for their dishonesty. The amusing thing is that they’ve also themselves gone overboard with all kinds of films calling them blockbusters or whatever. So yeah Dangal isn’t an all-time blockbuster judged by those historical standards (of course this is another red herring? Who said it was HAHK?) but hey I’ll take the film’s 385 cr or whatever (leaving aside the foreign gross, leaving aside China) over the 300 or Bajrangi and the even lower gross everyone else has! The other dishonesty here is that Aamir is breaking records in non-mass oriented films. Films like PK or Dangal shouldn’t be setting the pace. Salman’s masala ought to be. So Aamir is in fact maximizing his gross. To be that far ahead of the competition with a film like Dangal is incredible. Why can’t Salman do it with Tubelight? Why couldn’t he cross PK with Bajrangi? In any case all the BB2 commentary is more bull from BOI much as when they use historical examples they are always eager to bring up as many Deol family examples as possible. So yeah one Sholay, one Gadar, one HAHK. One wouldn’t think there was a star called Bachchan somewhere in there who had lots of remarkable blockbusters. Even when they talk about Desai they mention Dharam Veer! LOL! This is just a propaganda site that has only made itself more and more ridiculous over time. Except for people who want to buy the propaganda. All this pro-BB2 talk is just a way of being anti-Aamir. No mystery here. As always it’s the stupidity with which things are framed that offends one more than anything else.

It has beaten long running blockbusters like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. The film was being screened on around 350 theatres on its 50th day as far as the Hindi version goes. Opening up for the first time, Kohli said that he will never reveal dressing-room details
Kohli said “he respects” Kumble’s decision to quit and that there is highest regard for him as a player
Kohli spoke about how dressing room details are sacred to him, which, at any cost, can’t be shared with the public

PORT OF SPAIN: Speaking for the first time, Virat Kohli on Thursday said that he will never reveal dressing-room details, in an apparent reference to the now retired coach Anil Kumble’s statement that their partnership had become “untenable”.

Kumble stepped down a couple of days back due to differences with the India captain. Kohli said “he respects” Kumble’s decision to quit and that there is highest regard for him as a player.

“Obviously Anil bhai has expressed his views and he has taken a decision to step out and we will respect that decision. It’s something that has happened right after the tournament,” Kohli said on the eve of the first ODI against the West Indies.

While he felt that Kumble is entitled to his opinion, in a roundabout manner, the skipper spoke about how dressing room details are sacred to him, which, at any cost, can’t be shared with the public.

“One thing for sure is that I have had 11 press conferences that have happened during the Champions Trophy. We have created a culture over the last 3-4 years that whatever happens in the change room, we have tried to maintain the sanctity of the change room throughout. That is what the whole team believes in. For us that is paramount,” Kohli stated.

The skipper said that he and his players respect Kumble’s achievements as a player.

“I have total respect for him as a cricketer and what he has achieved for the nation. All the years that he has played. There’s no taking away that aspect of him at all. And we all respect him totally,” Kohli very consciously made it clear that he won’t talk about coach Kumble’s role.

He was asked about Kumble’s approach while coaching and he stoically maintained his stance.

“Like I said, for me what’s most important is to maintain the sanctity of the dressing-room and what happens in the change-room is something that’s very sacred and private to all of us.

“… And something that I would not express in details in a public scenario. As I said, his point of view is out there and we respect that decision.”

Having said that, Kohli or anyone wouldn’t share why t happened because they will look foolish because someone was asking them to work harder. If tone was not right, it could have been corrected with joint seating with coach, player and CAC members..”

In broad day light, he indulges himself in hurling the choicest of abuses at the opposition at the drop of the hat & here he is acting in full soap-opera style through such maudlin & childish justifications!! Kumble has “earned” the respect of the Nation & the opposition and it’d make no difference to his legacy as a cricketer even if 100 Kohlis don’t “respect” his achievements, none whatsoever in the status of Kumble as a fighter, a 100% committed & passionate cricketer yet retaining the “sanctity of gentlemen’s game” by maintaining his gentlemanship throughout his career as a player & later as a captain & afterwards in various roles as an administrator (as a president of KSCA), as a mentor & in several other different capacities, yet never did we hear of his “autocratic methods” not once in his career of 28 years!! And all of a sudden, he becomes ” a dictatorial, headmasterly, over-disciplinarian” as alleged by Kohli & gang to get rid of this “thorn”!! Until Kohli comes clean on the very aspects under which Kumble had to resign, Kohli’s role in forceful exit of Kumble would remain dubious & he be held accountable for Kumble’s unceremonious departure as a coach.

With growing speculations regarding the situation between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh has come out in support of his former teammate and said that in his 15 years of cricketing career, there was no instance of Kumble indulging in a fight with any teammate or any player.

  19. Kumble never asked for a vote in selection meetings

Over the last several days, various proposals put forth by Anil Kumble at the behest of the Committee of Administrators during their Sunday(May 21) meeting in Hyderabad have filtered into public domain. Very few of them are true, of course. Including the porous dissemination that Kumble had asked for a vote for himself in selection matters.

Historically, Indian coaches have either sat in or been a remote presence at selection committee meetings to pick senior sides. The policy was dispensed with at some stage during Duncan Fletcher’s tenure as coach, primarily because the former Zimbabwe captain was seldom in India when teams were being picked and didn’t really follow domestic cricket with any great consistency to offer meaningful inputs.

Kumble has been Indian head coach for the better part of 11 months now. During his tenure, there have been at least a dozen selection meetings, and the former skipper has been part of just one of those meetings, very early in his stint and at his insistence. All Kumble has suggested now is that the head coach – whoever that might be in future too – should sit in on the meetings and be a part of the deliberations, not have an electoral say in who should be picked and who should not.

One of the first things Kumble had stressed when he took charge was keeping lines of communication open. Should the head coach not be privy to the goings-on inside the selection meeting, it becomes impossible for him to tell a particular player why he has been left out, and what he needs to do to bring himself back into the reckoning. The Australian and English coaches actually are part of their respective selection panels, with a voting right should any matter be put to vote. Against that backdrop, for Kumble to suggest that the BCCI return to norm and include the Indian head coach in the discussions isn’t asking for the moon. Or for a vote, as some name-hiding board officials have told us.

The insinuation that a seat on the selection panel brings with it Rs 60 lakh annually, and that’s what Kumble is targeting, is at once laughable, ludicrous and disrespectful. Motivated twisting of facts to string the unsuspecting along is an art that has been mastered by sports administrators across disciplines in the country, but to try to suck Kumble into the morass is extraordinarily poor form on the part of these ‘unnamed’ Board officials.

Phrases such as ‘unionist stance’ would indicate a no-holds-barred showdown when the simple fact is that all of Kumble’s suggestions – and that’s what they are – are neither ultimatums nor voluntary. Tasked specifically by the Committee of Administrators to work out a template for Indian cricket, Kumble’s proposals are not directed towards himself, but for the larger group going forward. As if he doesn’t have enough on his plate, a player as senior as Harbhajan Singh has appealed to his former captain to take up cudgels on behalf of domestic cricketers. Perhaps, having made his international debut 19 years back, Harbhajan should have realised that it was a matter he ought to have taken up with either the CEO of the BCCI, or with the CoA themselves.

The topic of Kumble’s annual retainership has become another talking point. No one is sure what the executive professionals in the board are making, so it is unfair to bandy numbers around publicly when it comes to the head coach or the support staff. Especially when the team is already in England and fine-tuning preparations for the defence of the Champions Trophy, these pin-pricks are best avoided.

  20. Twitter goes crazy as Virat Kohli deletes his old tweet welcoming Kumble as coach and unfollows him
    by Rajdeep Puri @rajdeep1494
    Tweets3 hrs ago

What’s the Story?Amidst all the controversy and speculation regarding the captain-coach spat between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble, the Indian cricket team captain has apparently deleted his old tweet welcoming Kumble as the coach of the Indian cricket team. He also unfollowed him on twitter. On 23 June 2016, Kohli took to Twitter to welcome Kumble as the coach of the team. He had tweeted “Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 [Anil Kumble] Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you.”

Kumble was quick in his response and said that he was looking forward to working with Kohli. His tweet read: “Thanks @imVkohli looking forward to working with you and team India.
    The Context
Nearly one year after being appointed as the coach of the side, Kumble decided to step down from the post shortly after India’s Champions Trophy 2017 campaign which saw them finish as the runners-up to arch-rivals Pakistan in a one-sided final.Kumble revealed an open letter on Facebook and Twitter revealing the reason as to why he stepped down as the coach.

    The Details:
One of the main reasons for Kumble stepping down as the coach was the bitter relationship with Kohli. Apparently, Kohli had some issues with Kumble’s style as a coach and wanted a change as soon as possible. There has been a lot of blame being put on Kohli without anyone listening to his side of the story.According to reports by CricketNext, a BCCI official had offered Kumble an extension of two weeks but Kumble refused it.
    What’s Next?
India will now take on West Indies in 5 ODIs and one T20I without a coach.
    Author’s Take
What happened in the past should stay in the past and it was an unnecessary move by Kohli to delete his old tweet welcoming Jumbo to the team. By doing so, he is garnering a lot of unwanted attention and is adding fuel to the fire. With all that is happening, let’s just hope India’s performances on the field are not affected.

Written by Shubhra Gupta | New Delhi |

Tubelight movie cast: Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Matin Rey Tangu, Zhu Zhu, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Om Puri, Shah Rukh Khan
    Tubelight movie director: Kabir Khan

    Tubelight movie rating: 1.5 stars

A man child. Or a child-like man. Salman Khan has had long practice of playing one or the other kind of male, and has aced both. His latest alter ego takes the child-like aspect of man several notches higher. Salman’s character Laxman Singh Bisht is called, disparagingly, ‘tubelight’. Why? Simple. It flickers. It takes time to switch on. And then, and then only, there is light.

Because it is Salman, we go in looking for a plot designed to propel him, and us, towards that light. And because it is Kabir Khan, who has the ability to layer mainstream with meaning, and who has given the star one of his most memorable films, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, we hope for the magic to work again.
But this time around, in which the director and the star set their sights on China, it is not to be. Tubelight presents Salman in full Forrest Gump mode. Laxman, the golden-hearted simpleton, not only loves his brother Bharat (Sohail Khan), he also teaches us to love our neighbours, during peace or strife. It matters not where the borders are; love conquers all.
The message is perfect, especially apt for these manic times. The messenger is far from. The effort, on Salman’s part, to come off slow-witted, shows in every frame. It’s all feels constructed, and on the surface, with no nuance. Instead of Hindi Chini bhai bhai, it is more like Hindi Chini, bye bye.
Which is a pity because Kabir pulled off a most entertaining ‘aman ki asha’ with Pakistan. In Tubelight, he goes back 55 years (it’s set in the backdrop of the 62 war): Bharat enrolls in the army, goes off to fight, and then vanishes, leaving Laxman devastated. A ‘Chinese’ looking mum-and-son (Zhu Zhu and Matin Rey Tangu) becomes the target of the villagers’ ire. Of course, everything is their fault.
Of course, the duo is Indian. Done better, the two Khans (three actually, because Sohail has a significant share of the screen as well as a production credit) could have said something very important about racism and widespread discrimination against north-easterners, called ‘chinkies’, and other humiliating names. Yes, they are as Indian as anyone else. But Tubelight squanders that opportunity.
Some of the film’s more likeable moments are shared between Laxman and the little boy, who’s completely edible, and an absolute natural. The supporting cast is solid. It includes the late Om Puri, as a father-figure to the brothers, and Zeeshan Ayyub as a local hothead, among others. And Sohail reprises his familiar act as the caring ‘bhai’.
But when the main act isn’t convincing, the film becomes just like the title: mostly flicker with a little late glow. The one word that’s used almost in every other line in the film is ‘yakeen’. The film should have been infused with it. Here we just don’t buy it.

  23. I am not feeling Tubelight. Salman cannot play a man child running around with his brother trying to evoke emotions. As Livewire pointed out on top, emotions cannot be manufactured by the script, they need to be the part of the flow.

Simply put Salman will like to focus on TZH as that is his absolute vehicle unlike TL wherein the promos give it a dull feeling, kind of Ajay Devgan movie wherein he played challanged father to a child. Still its Salman and Eid, so 250 crore is guaranteed.

Oh God!! Please don’t remind me of that torture.. its the worst performance by a leading A-level actor(Hrithik in MPKDH comes close). Sean Penn in original(I am Sam) was nominated for Oscar and here Devgn hammed to the hilt and it is difficult to even watch the clips again.

    • Some positive points from the review.

Speaking of scenes worth noticing, do not miss the scenes wherein Salman Khan undergoes a selection process to join the army as well as the scene which has Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo.

After having given smash hit films like KICK, BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and SULTAN, expectations were sky high from Salman Khan’s TUBELIGHT. Salman Khan plays his part with utmost sincerity and dedication but it’s the script which fails him bitterly. Even though Salman Khan tries to be naïve and affable, the film’s poor writing gives him in. Ditto for the Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, who makes her debut with TUBELIGHT. While she is endearing to watch, the weak script fails to escalate the impact of her performance. The Indian audiences will find it tough to relate to her (half-baked) character in the film. The little boy Matin Rey Tangu is cute and endearing in his character, but doesn’t get to do much. Sohail Khan, on the other hand, is convincing in his extended cameo kind of role and plays his part with sincerity. The (late) Om Puri delivers a memorable performance, while Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo is effective. Rest of the actors help the film in move forward.

  24. Going by the reviews, it seems Kabir Khan has again made an average film. He is a v average film-maker who has tasted big commercial success due to his association with Salman. I think his main problem is that he isnt a good writer. His films usually have a political backdrop, but he leaves it half-baked. The only good film he made has been BB, which again was penned by Rajamouli’s father.

Anyways, TL may still have enough meat for Bhai fans. And due to Eid release I still think it will do 250 cr, even if the neutral audience shies away from this one.

    • EXCLUSIVE: Govinda’s look revealed in the Anurag Basu film Jagga Jasoos
      ByBollywood Hungama News Network
      Jun 23, 2017 – 8:00 am IST

By now we all know that Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif will next be seen sharing screen space in the Anurag Basu film Jagga Jasoos. Though the film has been in the making for quite a while now, it is slated to hit screens on July 14. Away from the film’s lead cast we hear that veteran actor Govinda who recently attempted making a comeback as the lead actor with the Aa Gaya Hero will also be seen in the film.

But, it isn’t so much that Govinda will be featuring in the film that caught our attention, instead it was the actor’s varied looks that did. We at Bollywood Hungama came across these images of Govinda’s different looks in Jagga Jasoos and just had to share it. Interestingly, while Govinda’s first look as a long haired, bearded suave yet clueless detective is rather funny, the second is sure to have you in splits, with the actor donning the garb of a tribal baba with braided hair! Though the exact details of Govina’s role in Jagga Jasoos isn’t known, judging by the images we guess he features rather prominently in the film.

As for JHMS, I believe it has the potential of 300 cr if the film is accepted at the same level as JWM. Its up to Imtiaz to deliver his best.

BB2 is not that bad. When I watched it second time, I didnt like it as much. The Telegu style masala treatment made me cringe many a times. But then I always prefer Dangal/PK to D3. And looking forward to SS/Salute more than TOH.

Telugu people are quite fond of bengali literature and so they made some movies based on those novels by Tagore, Sart Chandra. ANR’s Devdas is the most famous of them. You can fast forward those innumerable songs. Baatasari is another film based on a bengali novel acted by multi talented Bhanumati and ANR. Badi didi by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. Charanadasi based on Nouka Doob by Tagore. These are some samples. Apart from it there is Mooga Manasulu, Milan in Hindi. As for fantasies Mayabazaar, Patala Bhairavi etc. And many more. Some of them were made into hindi like Bhabhi ki Choodiyan(Vadinagaari Gajulu).

I don’t go on to each star’s movie thread to comment 10 negative comments whole day and night. Try to maintain this as a movie forum and comment your likes and dislikes accordingly for proper discussion. Even if I like SRK and more interested, it has nothing to do with being negative on other movie stars. You don’t see me going to Ajay/Akshay/Salman/Aamir movies to just go and comment negative comments whole day which Aamir fans are especially doing regularly on this blog. Looks like all of them shifted from some teen fan forum to SS.

I’ve posted my first day movie reviews for 2 years regularly every Friday with every big and small film and I stopped doing this year and only posted for Baahubali 2. For me a fav star is a subset of a larger hobby of watching/loving movies. You guys are living with making star the superset over of movies and just criticizing rest of movies 24/7.

Actually I’m not surprised. I used to meet such dumb fanatics during Sachin’s stardom. They are like.. we love Sachin and they don’t care about cricket or follow anything. We just want Sachin to make centuries and win awards and doesn’t matter what’s happening in cricketing world, who is playing who is winning, who is losing, nothing. Without loving cricket, if you love Sachin, I would call them dumb fanatics and the same case can be made here. You guys living only for Aamir khan and hardly watch any other movies besides commenting negatively 24/7.

  29. BO update: Salman Khan’s Tubelight registers 25-30% occupancy in morning shows
    By Bollywood Hungama News Network
    , Jun 23, 2017 – 11:08 am IST

The much talked about, keenly anticipated and greatly hyped Salman Khan starrer TUBELIGHT finally hit screens today. Directed by Kabir Khan the film which also features Sohail Khan and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu that released across a total of 5550 screens worldwide (4350 domestic + 1200 overseas), is based on a story revolving around the 1962 Indo-China war. But will the film that features Salman Khan playing a role similar to what he earlier did in BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN manage to woo the audience and work at the box office is the question.

Advance reports suggest that TUBELIGHT has opened to approximately 25-30% occupancy rate during morning shows. However, considering that it is a working day and the pre-Eid period this figure comes across as a rather decent opening. Simultaneously, TUBELIGHT that enjoys a solo release this weekend has the added advantage of decent advance booking rate that will ensure the film a good opening weekend.

On the whole, though TUBELIGHT is expected to enjoy a bountiful opening weekend, the mixed to negative reviews for the film from critics are bound to affect footfalls in theatres. However, with the audience passing the final verdict, patronage for the film is expected to escalate over evening and night shows.

The actress has further asked the makers to make certain changes to the script and come back to her with the alterations. She would then take a call on whether she wants to do the movie or not. If all goes well it sure would be a treat for all Abhi-Ash fans to see the iconic Jodi reunite on the silver screen after a long time, with their last outing together being the 2010 movie ‘Raavan’.

  31. All Time Advance Booking Records – Tubelight Ninth

    Box Office India Trade Network

Tubelight had the ninth highest advance of all time in terms of the money collected at the box office before release. Earlier advance was calculated as the percentage number of tickets sold against the total availabe but this is reduntant as even the biggest films are unable to reach 20%.

Overall its a good advance but not a great one. It is ninth place in terms of collections pre release but in terms of tickets sold it is lower than Raees at number ten and lower than other films like PK, Chennai Express and Ek Tha Tiger. This is beacuse it has a higher ATP (Average Ticket Price) as tickets rates are the highest of all time at major multiplex chains and that is where the best advance is.

Below are the top ten advances of all time. This is the apprx collections pre release (end of business Thursday).

    1. Bahubali – The Conclusion – 31,50,00,00

    2. Sultan – 21,00,00,000

    3. Dangal – 17,50,50,000

Social media polarizes film to the extent that it spreads like a wildfire. If this goes above Jai Ho (based on what it feels like is total negative feedback) it’s done well. But it seems a disaster.

Salman and Kabir have it seems taken the audience for a ride here, overestimating what Bajrangi Bhaijaan achieved. 39. Tubelight Opens Well – Good In North
    Friday 23 June 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Tubelight has opened well at around 35-40% on average across India in the morning shows. The opening was better in the North as in Delhi and Punjab the collections are not really affected by pre Eid while the morning figures were good to decent elsewhere.

The opening in terms of occupancy is the third best of the year after Bahubali – The conclusion and Raees. The occupancy is lower than Raees due to the release as this is the widest release ever with 4400 screens while Raees had a clash with Kaabil which meant less screens which enabled a higher occupancy.

The opening has been affected by Pre Eid but the film also shows Salman Khan as not the hero type which also is a factor in that the opening in smaller towns is lower than other Salman Khan pre Eid releases like Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Then there is the affect of Bahubali – The Conclusion as this film is the first big release since that juggernaut which showed the masses that this sort of cinema can still happen and Tubelight is not that type mass cinema. In the context of what happens every Friday the film has opened well as very few films open at this level but if we look at it as a Salman Khan starrer and the expectations then it is underwhelming

The main multiplexes in North have opened with occupancy of 50% and even other big plexes in other parts of the country are decent. Its rare but its the first time in years that a Salman Khan film has not opened quite like it should in mass centres and this is allowing for the pre Eid factor. Its going to be and up and down day due to pre Eid as collections outside North will fall in the afternoon and then pick up again in the evening

With this I think reviews or critics should I say have really gone for this film. Salman said this recently.

“I genuinely, honestly don’t care. I believe that they’ve no right to take anybody’s hard work down. The fans will decide that, in any case. The box-office will prove it one way or the other. What have you done to earn the right to rip a film apart? On Day 1 of the release, you write some rubbish crap. It destroys films and a lot of hard work that went behind making it. With me, of course, it doesn’t make any difference. And I think they know it all too well. My films are critic-proof. I am telling them now: go give my film minus 100 stars, why just zero. My fans will anyway watch my film and that’s my reward,”

I think some critics have taken this personally and are really gunning for Tubelight.

Anyway for Salman, box office matters, let’s see where he lands.

It’s going to be a hard landing for sure ! At the end of the day hard cash is needed to get to the ticket counter…….people have short memory if its time not well spent and have options.

Bollywood has some serious trouble making the mentally slow work. Very few have gotten the simpleton act right. Either they ham or shake head and just overdo the simpleton act. Even an aamir with all his homework fell for that in D3 to an extent. For most of them Rain Man becomes the template with all shaking and nodding.

What may be worse here is sight of Sohail and doubling down of two grown up heavily built men acting dimwitted when we are living in this slim & trim world. Sohail facial features are anything but charismatic and it’s amazing what nature can do to a face with just a slight deviation on the nose otherwise there isn’t much difference if one were to compare to Salman’s face structure.

More importantly the movie will damage credibility of Salman hereon in a very similar way what Don did to SRK. Suddenly srk shortcomings as an actor were just too obvious for audience to reorient themselves. Salman would have to somewhat look for a CDI type deal to get his credibility back.

We live in times where audience is willing to accept and actors/ directors have limitless potential of imagination. ….imaginative movies that follow show the possibilities of the mind ….but there are no shortcuts. I watched Wonder Woman last week and was blown away by the make believe world and started to live that movie for sometime……… There were a couple of scenes where I questioned the angle or motivation they had taken but none of it distracted from the storytelling as a whole. In the darkness of the theatre I started to believe in the story and the origins of Diana and I’m not talking about whether she is clay or human or whatever in between….started to believe in the Amazons.…. I did question the placement of Wonder Woman in World War I. It seemed like a convenient business choice….but the history books / nerd in me suddenly woke up and I started to recall how horrific that time was…it is ‘that’ perspective that brings Diana into our world.

Coming back to Tubelight, sometimes absolute failure work in better ways if one is willing to adapt…..”in order to rise from its own ashes a phoenix first must burn” …. is a positive way of taking this disappointment !!

Really? Credibility of Salman, whats that? In his current streak he has delivered a bunch of nonsense masala films, except one BB (where thankfully the simpleton act was not pushed too far).

Even your Don reference does not work. Some of SRK’s early work in 90s had proved that he can act a bit. But Don did not expose any extra shortcomings on the acting front (everyone was used to his overacting bit). The King of Romance just fell short of Big B when it came to ‘stature’. Fell well short of the overall personality that is needed to pull off an action masala with elan, as compared to the original Don. It was his vanity that he took on Don remake, and it was exposed.

But again, can you explain the bit on Salman’s credibility? He never tries to act. When he does its a seeming disaster (no plans to see this myself).

Some kind of entrance scene, a couple of catchy forgettable songs, lust for a leading lady, beat up a few bad guys, some drama and comedy. The usual Bhai act with the usual dumb Katrina act. It’s everything Salman fans will want. Opening historic, a couple of good reviews for fist pumping chances for records then the usual slide with 50 odd excuses that were known before but only thought about with hindsight. Then the wait for his next Eid release for it all to start again.

  40. This is a Blip on Salman’s career Path. He was treading on Aamir’s territory of an emotionally driven film and with his success in BB and then seeing Dangal doing well thanks to the emotional connect, they took that as a platform to manufacture emotions from TL. Only problem is the movie completely out of box and comfort zone for Salman and calling spade a spade, Salman cannot handle these kind of roles. With TZH he goes back to basics and his strength. Look for that movie to be a big grosser. Also Kabir K as a director and writer is exposed, BB had a writer from BBali.

Even after 3 hrs of trying hard with senti music, buckets of tears from the entire caste, and Sallu’s swollen contorted face desperately pulling on a Gumpian meme, the Tubelight just did not turn on. Sallu was so bad at trying to emote, wonder how the supporting caste kept a straight face while shooting.
The movie just does not connect, and the audience is left empty after having waited for 3hrs for some sort of moment of awakening. I went with a couple of die-hard Sallu fans who were utterly disappointed. Big mis-step in his pursuit of PK and Dangal records.
Chaubey ji chale chabbe ji bann ne, lekin dubey ji ban ke laute.

Having said that, IMHO, this movie just might have a slight chance in China. There was nothing antagonistic about China, the war is presented as an external event which is sort of unwanted by both sets of protagonists in the movie. Zhu and Martin just might be able to tug at the heartstrings of the Chinese audiences, as long as those audiences can ignore the disastrous performance of Sallu Gump.

  45. Salman Khan On Tubelight Reviews: Ratings Are Better Than I Expected

Salman Khan’s Tubelight is released this Friday did not go well with the critics but he is pleased as they did not give minus rating to film.

“The critics were really good. I was expecting minus 3 and minus 4 but they gave 1, 1.5 apparently, so I am very pleased,” said Salman at an event where his Being Human joined hands with PVR for an initiative under which every time when a customer book tickets for a movie at PVR, they will get the option to pay Rs 2 extra and this amount will be given to the Being Human foundation for different causes.

About the feedback about his film, Salman said: “As per reports people are saying they can not see ‘Bhai’ (Salman) crying. So I asked, are they (audience) laughing and the answer was “no, they are crying”. So I said don’t worry about it.”

“As it is an Eid release, people have preconceived notions and plans to throw coins, sing and dance at the cinema hall. So they have gone to watch a certain film but get to watch another film. This film is not of a kind which you watch with your buddies as you will not get an opportunity to dance or have fun. It is a very emotional film. Even an emotionless, stone hearted person will get tears in his eyes. So this is an emotional film to be seen with parents, grand parents and entire family.”

Asked about mixed reviews the film is getting, the “Dabangg” Khan said: “I got so many text messages, saying that they got emotional watching the brothers dancing on the song. So we are preparing audience for a beautiful, simple, emotional film about brothers. As far as reviews are concerned, every film has mixed reviews.”

Asked about any sense of failure and bother due to the mixed reviews, he laughed and said: “Look at me, are there any sign of worries on this face. I am not bothered, I know the film will do well and will be a hit and get lot of respect.”

  46. Tubelight First Day Business 20.5 to 21 crores
    Saturday 24 June 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Tubelight grossed 20.50-21 crore nett on day which would be a very good number for most films but this one has higher expectations being an Eid Salman Khan starrer. The collections are similar to Raees released earlier this year but that film clashed with Kaabil and although Kaabil hardly collected it took screens away from Raaes which meant the 20.50 crore nett of Raees came on a much lower capacity than the 20.5 crore nett of Tubelight. The film needed to be at least 25 crore nett as a Kick had done 24.97 crore nett and Bajrangi Bhaijaan 26.67 crore nett and both these films were also pre Eid releases. Being a social it would have compared with those films as they were more in the action and masala space.

The film is the opposite to Raees as far as circuit business is concerned as Tubelight is best in East Punjab and Delhi city and Raees was worst here while Raees was strong in Gujarat and West Bengal but Tubelight is worst here. The film has done very well in Assam probably due to the local appeal but that is such a small circuit that it hardly registers as per the all India picture. East Punjab has grossed 2.78 crore nett which has no pre Eid factor as limited muslim audience and on this fair value for the film would be 25 crore nett so its lost 4 crore nett because of Muslims not coming out.

The opening is below expectations but there is the Muslim audience still to come post Monday and for the film to post a decent final number this audience has to turn up post Monday. It will also be crucial to have growth on Saturday as if the film is unable to grow then the writing will be on the wall.

Tubelight Day 2 Box Office Collection Update

Tubelight isn’t sustaining as well as the trade expected it to on Day 2 at the domestic box office, as the business of the film – until 3PM today – was down by around 5-10% from Friday. If business shows growth evening onwards at multiplexes, the Day 2 total of the film could get to around the same range as Friday. Else, it could end up with a total of less than 20 crore, which would not only suggest a negative trend, but would seal the fate of the film on the second day itself.

When compared to other ‘Pre Eid’ releases featuring Salman Khan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had similar release circumstances as Tubelight, the jump in business from Friday to Saturday was more than 34% (Day 1 – 27.25 cr, Day 2 – 36.60 cr).

The film was carrying extraordinary word-of-mouth and inspite of strong competition from ‘Bahubali: The Beginning’, the Day 2 business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan showed nearly 40% growth at multiplexes – even though it was Pre-Eid.

The other film, 2014’s Kick, showed only 2% growth – but that film got a huge initial. Kick had collected 26.5 crore on its opening day, much more than the 21 crore Day 1 collections of Tubelight.

The trend on Saturday has made the 200 crore mark out of reach for ‘Tubelight’. The distributors of the film will suffer losses, as the film was purchased for a high price with the hope that it would recreate the magic of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and Salman’s presence would ensure a strong initial. So far, ‘Tubelight’ has disappointed on both counts, needing nothing less than a miracle Post-Eid to recover costs.

On the early evidence of the 2017 Champions Trophy, there’s currently a bar of gold on the scale representing the bat and a feather on the other side, denoting the plight of the bowler.
Three hundred runs for a 50-over innings is now the norm, and quite often it isn’t enough to gain victory. And all this in an England summer blighted by rain squalls that you would normally expect to juice up the pitches.

The former world record-holding wicket-taker Fred Trueman used to bemoan the fact that the “last bluddy bowler to be knighted was Sir Francis Drake”. The way things are heading, the modern bowler will only kneel before royalty to plead for mercy.

Being a sports fan, one should be able to take it too, and not only be able to dish it out.

Anyways, as per Salman goes, TL is not that big a hiccup. Of course he should understand that BB was a fluke and not his strength. His forte is mindless masala and his next set of films will cater to that. 65. Tubelight Day 2 Collections and Lifetime Prediction
3 hours ago61 Commentsby Indicine Team1 min read

Tubelight was decent on its second day at the box office, but the film failed to show the 5-10% growth that it needed to suggest a positive trend. The movie has collected 42 crore in 2 days at the domestic box office, which is far less than what was expected out of a Salman Khan Eid release.

The next 2-3 days will be crucial for Tubelight, if it has to end with a decent total, although the distributors recovering their investment and the film attaining ‘hit’ status doesn’t look like a possibility given the level of collections the first two days.

Neither the reports nor the film is as bad as the reviews that the film got, but outright negative reviews and general negativity in the media, seems to have done irrecoverable damage to the box office prospects of Tubelight.

IndicineLBO: We are going with Rs 146 crore as the final lifetime collections of Tubelight. If the collections do indeed finish at this level, Tubelight would be a box office flop and the lowest Eid grosser since 2011’s Bodyguard.

    • Interesting Lifetime predictions by Indicine. However, dont agree with them on any counts.

Jagga Jasoos trailers have been better than expected and this can easily do 100+ cr. JHMS and Toilet both look like 150 cr deals at this point going by trailers (JHMS being poor to ok; and Toilet trailer being average). Baadshaho can do 100 cr. Secret Superstar is the dark horse here and can do 3-4 times the prediction of 60 cr if it clicks (due to its universal appeal). Golmaal Again and Padmavati can both do 200 cr.

Tubelight continues to struggle on Sunday
    06/25/20172

Tubelight is struggling at the box office even on Sunday. Despite being a holiday, the occupancy is very much average in most of the places.

The trend is still varying across most of the circuits. Some places have gone up while others are down. There are reports that dozens of shows were cancelled in Mumbai/Gujarat belt. Another show in Delhi was cancelled but that can be due to technicals reasons too. In West Bengal, Tubelight was replaced by Bengali films at some screens on Saturday itself.

On the positive side, Tubelight is doing its best business in Delhi/NCR and Punjab with noon shows recording 60-65% occupancy in multiplexes. Also, it is picking up in Mumbai and South India which were average in first two days. Overall it is faring better than previous two days.

It is a foregone conclusion that Sunday will be the highest earning day for Tubelight. Looking at the trends, the actual collection on Sunday can be 2-3 crore higher that yesterday unless there is a miraculous turnaround in the evening/night.

Its not run of a mill subject. The risk involve is high. If you don’t get it right you will have to pay a heavy price. It is an outright rejection and shows limitation of Salman in an unconventional role. He is more of an impromptu actor who doesn’t believe in the idea of preparation. Role demanded much more than that.

Salman is bonified David Beckham. Got a great right foot but stick him in a huge moment he’s pretty useless. But cinema will always have a place for this ilk. Tubelight being a flop borderline disaster won’t really impact TZH. Salman’s fortunate Hirani’s film has shifted as that clash could now be much more interesting. I’m sure TZH will open huge and continue the trend of his quite ‘average’ films being made out to be blockbusters by everyone.

  69. Q. Indicine plz answer this I have read that Tubelight needs 135 cr to be a hit and in your prediction article you stated that even if it does 175 cr it’ll be below average / flop how could this be? Budget is 100 crs including marketing cost so why the breakeven is too high I know that distributors might make losses but even Dilwale made loss and you gave it average Raees did 120 and its above average how?

    A. Tubelight was sold for 132 crore, domestic. It needed to collect upwards of 250 crore. It’ll fall well short. It’s a theatrical failure, both in terms of perception and heavy losses that the distributors will incur. Tubelight has shocked the trade, many sub-distributors will probably lose their life-savings over this. The producers have made a lot of money, but it would be nice of them to refund and make up for some losses – like Shah Rukh did after Dilwale debacle.

  70. Q. How big flop is Tubelight ?

    A. Pretty major. The last hope is big growth on Eid, if that doesn’t come, the distributors will lose around 50 crore of their investment.

    Q. Among the recently released Semi hits Raees, Kaabil and Tubelight, which film you think distributors lost more money on (in numbers please)?

    A. Tubelight will be the biggest loss-making film if it wraps below 200.

    • Yes that line was hilarious. And that line about feeling poverty from inside through your undies was ROFL…

I found the film very flat actually. It gave me a feeling the director was showing random but very true facts. Amrita Singh’s character was stereotypical. It was a very well-intentioned movie but gave vibes of very simplistic movie-making. It needed more verve. It actually fell between 2 schools of movie-making: That of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s [Hindi Medium – CHUPKE CHUPKE anyone?] and Dibakar Banerjee’s type, a la KHOSLA KA GHOSLA..

Dobriyal’s character was truly, truly far-fetched. Maybe it’s my cynicism toward life at my age but that kind of saccharine goodness belongs to Barjatya and Co.

Irfan was reliably very good. However, his presence backfired in the climactic monologue in the school auditorium. That called for a STAR-ACTOR: In other words, it screamed a younger Amitabh. He would have chomped the scene to its bones there..

As you love trivia, let me tell you something. For the climax scene, the dialogues were done were badly, so Amitabh called up Javed Akhtar and made him update that dialogues beautifully impromptu but another fact is Salman also called up Salim Khan and made him update his monologue at the end of the movie. So, that is that last time the “Salim-Javed” together shared a scene in a movie! 🙂

How much it collects after that remains to be seen. A free-fall from Wednesday would mean around 130 cr total. If it sustains a little bit then perhaps 150 cr range as many are predicting.

The distribution price to Hirawat was around 130 crs…It still has a chance to reach 180 crs if it puts 20 crs each for next 2 days..Very difficult but not outside the realms of possibility. The Indicine figures of 250 crs are for the Hit Tag, that’s ruled out now…
If it ends at around 130 crs then it will be a disaster for sure as that’s 50 cr losses for the distributors…

The good (?) thing about this now is that JHMS has been sold at ONLY 65 crs to the same distributors. Not sure if it is the effect of TL. The other way to look at it is that maybe Red Chillies don’t have a great product in hand and wants to just get the Hit Tag based on economics. JHMS is a surefire hit at these prices even at 120 crs. That’s Kaabil territory when it comes to economics and I had raised the same doubt with kaabil too…

        Like

        • The reduction in distribution price of JHMS is probably due to the poor reaction that the promos and song trailer have received. And may have something to do with the better reaction that Toilet has managed to get, which is scheduled to release in its second week.

After burning their hands with TL, its natural for NH Studios to be careful with their next biggie. Of course, Red Chillies agreeing to a lower price than previously negotiated shows lack of confidence on their product too.

The best plan the theatrical trailer. In any case I can say the plan didn’t work if movie flops to the extent the plan if conventional might drive up interest. If the movie’s a hit it’s hardly down to marketing, right?

If true I don’t read too much into it. It’s clear the promotion has not worked till now. A theatrical trailer can change that. It could be a mix of everything: trailers, TEPK impact, Tubelight failure, losing screens week 2 or just a more logical decision by RCE for which is good. This is where SRK is just a better business man. He might just be doing what RR did with Kaabil. The ancillary revenues from good media perception on films is probably sizeable. Though not the SRK of old.

I Think it might be due to his last 2 movies under/non performance where he is making up with the distributors… But 65 crs for theatricals is almost throwaway prices…Even SRKs underperforming movies do 130 to 140 crs, more than Akshay’s hits…Fan of course is a different genre and I am not bracketing them into his usual movies..I hope the movie is not as bad as the teasers. Usually his movies have great trailors and not so good content, hopefully here it is opposite. It needs a couple of good songs and a strong trailor. As of now looking like a 15 to 20 cr opening, which is not so good for SRK…

        • No one’s questioning Akshay kumar who is giving this hits at 100 cr and superhit at 120 crs from last few yrs. Folks are even putting Akshay ahead of Srk one here based his consistent hits even if they are grossing lesser than Srk’s underperformers. This is Akshay template but also shows the content is more metro centric. I can talk more only after watching the movie but the ppl who put money weren’t ready to pay more than 65 cr, so our online discussions are waste.

Btw, Kaabil was sold low as well and would have become Hit at 110 crores but it ended up at 84 crores and Flop. So, I think knowing Imtiaz Ali’s sensibilities ( his max film is under 80 crs) they expect at 120 crs min and if it makes 150 cr, they’ll be in plus. Near 200, its huge gain for the distributors.

BB2 has changed it. The first real big film that can change anything as it had time was Thugs. JHMS probably can’t change much in any case a love story is not the right comparison. TZH can reshoot some scenes. Robot 2 shifted for obvious reasons. Dwarf film has huge advantage just like anything else in pre production.

“One failure doesn’t change anything. It didn’t change for SRK after FAN, Aamir after Talaash, Hrithik after Mohenjo Daro or Akshay after numerous setbacks.”

Clubbing Talaash with flops like Fan and Mohenjodaro is simply dumb. Talaash did fairly well considering its suspense drama genre, niche mainstream appeal and medium budget. Its actually a multiplex hit and can be termed as an overall semi-hit. In many ways Talaash behaved like DCH at BO. How is it similar to disasters like Fan and Mohenjodaro ???

They are also trying to club SRK, Salman and Aamir together, which is again too dumb. When Aamir is giving the highest grossers in non-massy, non-masala films like PK and Dangal, he is obviously a cut above the rest at BO.

Aamir was smart not to go big with it on a holiday. In the end it seems he knew product won’t do big business and cut losses. I’m not saying love this site but as a general point it’s far closer to being truthful than the one whose name I shall not take.

          4) It along with talkingmoviez, bollywoodarena, addatoday is calling a spade a spade with Tubelight and not sugarcoating. It’s headlines are either negative or neutral, which is fair. Nothing positive.

        • I would not call Talaash a setback Jay. Yes, it was released between colossal grossers like 3 Idiots and Dhoom 3, but if you go back to the interviews that Aamir gave during Talaash promotions, he had categorically classified Talaash as niche mainstream movie (he had called DG a non-mainstream, art-house film previously). They carefully budgeted Talaash and did not expect it to beat 3 Idiots’ 200 cr. It still managed to do nearly 100 cr. The problem with it was its trending. But I blame the release strategy for that, they should have gone for a smaller screen count and it may have trended much better.

I agree with the rest of your points and I do follow this site as a reference point like the others you mentioned. But I find Indicine’s tone a bit anti-Aamir, not willing to give him his due that easily.

Box office wise it’s a setback for Indian media who’ll not understand a nuanced film period. A few more crores i.e. 100 CR obviously media would have jumped in air like Michael Jordan. It’s the difference between 99 and 100 that really has baffled box office reporting. Look at Bradman, he’s more famous because he did not get 100 average! That stat alone is quiz question galore! Talaash was not a liked film period. But no other star was capable of giving the film that level of credibility at box office. Tubelight from word go shows Salman’s huge glaring flaws as an actor; Aamir post Lagaan cannot really be challenged like this in ANY of his films. Of course Secret superstar can do 200-250 cr if it gets accepted like TZP. But even if it does 100 cr it will be a BO hit given its low budget (15-20 cr if I am not wrong here). That cant be called a setback just because Aamir had a 100 cr grosser in between two 400 cr grossers (or so).

But for the kind of film it was in ‘hindsight’ it did as much as any A list star could take it. It still means it was not a failure. Once one see’s the film from the prism of taste and culture of Bollywood films you can understand why it was not loved; it does not have a hero, I love the soundtrack (but today’s youth like ‘twist’ or ‘selfie’, understanding something like the jazz number or laakh duniye kahe is compromising, the heroines are hardly glamorous, the story is so dark and the ending if ‘out’ and known kind of kills the film. It’s in the Pink space without a real social prevalent message. Compound this with delays, it becomes from being awaited to getting negative press.

Only really Kahaani, Pink and Baby can be compared. All 4 good films but never the kind to get huge numbers. I remember my hot predictions pre Talaash, I went big! But after seeing it one can understand why it cannot go big. It’s not ‘obvious’ storytelling; requiring the audience to think didn’t help it.

WW it recovered 65 cr distributor shares (45 cr share from 90 cr nett in India; 20 cr from overseas share from 50 cr gross in overseas). Reliance made a small profit here. The budget was 45 cr (Aamir did not charge his acting fee but took profit sharing as producer from distribution price and ancillary revenues). Everyone made money on Talaash.

I dont mind if anyone calls these movies Average grossers (by Aamir standards). But if we go by the soft BOI classifications for SRK/Salman movies, then they are much more than just Average. One just needs to be consistent across Stars and films.

          >>>>

And 2013 was the only year apart from 2012 when Eid and Independence Day came few days apart, among all those years mentioned. That’s as big a holiday period as it comes. 2012 as we know was the only Eid that Salman came close (too close if one takes producer’s total).

So, you think that extra holiday helped to break Lifetime record? If you are digging that deeply, let me also remind that Aug 15 was 7th day of CE’s release but another major release and also a sequel of well loved OUTIM was released and taking over lot of the screens of CE. That year is also the only time where a major release has taken up the half screens of a movie within 6 days of the release and not usual of 2 weeks release full screens available. Now, if CE had full booking for 2 weeks, wouldn’t it have really helped more than sharing an additional holiday?

FYI: Aug 15 – CE did 19 crs, OUTIMD did 14 crs, If it was solo, it would have done another 30 crs as it did on 1st Sunday.

To be frank for CE to be a convincing record breaker a total in excess of 250 CR was required, what D3 duly obliged with.

The response was not in the same stratosphere (like D3) compared to 3 Idiots. CE also had also many holidays during weekdays that spiked it’s trend beyond week 2. Talk all facts not just one day!

Also since august 2013, SRK has had HNY, Dilwale & Raees to put the record straight. All 3 have favourable classifications. He’s simply judged differently.
          1) He didn’t choose a clash with BM, but got one and lost big
          2) He avoided Sultan but took FilmKraft date in a dirty way
          3) He PLAYED DIRTY with figures like FilmKraft. I’m sure both you (Master & Krrish) as SRK fans know this. I hardly see you challenge your favourite in this dirtying tactics? Why is it acceptable for him? Answer?

Some critique on your beloved is welcome occasionally? No point sticking up defense all the time. He has played dirty and pointing out one film like CE is hardly a debate. And this RR should give date is not answer. He picked date FIRST and got his product ready for it as promised.

They went on and on and would have even given some numbers today had it been playing in even 1 screen…

Later once the business ended, BH also lowered Kaabil but still kept over 100 crores when it was 84 lifetime.

  82. Eid Audience Stays Away Fom Tubelight On Monday
    Monday 26 June 2017 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network
Tubelight has faltered after the weekend as the Eid audience has not really come to the theatres like it has happened past. It was a big holiday so the film should have held its collections like Sunday and added the Muslim audience in most of India but that has not happenned. The collections will show a drop on Monday as compared to Sunday. The figure will be known in the morning as some places are up but others have seen big falls as compared to day one and Sunday but Monday is a huge setback for the film.
Despite the negativity around the film and the poor reports it still looked like cruising to 150 crore nett plus total with the normal Eid trend but with that audience not coming it could even struggle to become the biggest grosser of the first half of 2017 and this will send shock waves around the industry. The distributors will loose heavily but that is not much of an issue as when you pay such high prices the risk is always there and on top the producers profits are more than double the distributors losses thanks to a record digital price. Nothing is wrong in terms of economics (budget) of the film and it is not a financial disaster but for the industry not to have a 150 crore nett grosser in the first half of the year when Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan have all had releases is a shocker. A dubbed Telugu film will do more in Hindi than the combined business of the four films featuring these big stars and that shows the sad state of affairs in the Hindi film industry. It pretty much tells the story of 2017 till date which is one film proves that huge business is there and the audience wants to come but we are unable to deliver.
There will be talk of even Salman Khan on a downward spiral now but nothing really changes for him, he remains the most popular star for the Hindi audience by a distance and it will take 4 or 5 Tubelight’s to change that. But it is the responsibility of the star to make sure that a big festival release does not have arty treatment by the director as is the case here, the reports of a slow arty type film among the audience have ensured his mass following has not turned up after Eid which is a huge setback not only for the film but the industry also.

      2 points.
      1. Distributor losing is not much of an issue according to BOI since they committed sin of paying heavy price to a star they reckon is the biggest by a distance.
I am no BO expert but isn’t it important for distributors to make money on a film made by biggest star by so called BO experts. And they are liable to invest heavily on such a film.

      2. So called Arty film on a holiday. Does Dangal qualify as arty by BOI or not??
Isn’t it important just to make a good film and decide finances on the merit of the film too apart from the star appeal.

3rd point – It will take Salman 4-5 tubelights to reach SRK level, but SRK neens one 300 cr nett to out do all. right?? 😉

      Liked by 1 person

      • Classic BOI scam.. as if any top star let alone one as hot as Salman is likely to have 4-5 Tubelights in a row! Less than that and the star is fine. Of course no one said anything other than that Tubelight is a significant failure for him. Don’t think anyone said ‘Salman’s over!’. But again classic BOI tactics. Just as they’ve suddenly included SRK and Hrithik and Akshay here as well. Was anyone expecting huge things from Mohenjodaro? Does any Akshay film cross 150? Raees is a fair one but even this was hardly in the Tubelight league in terms of expectations. So those films might have missed 150 when best case scenario was either below 150 or maybe a bit over. With Tubelight the best case scenario was Bajrangi at the very least. At least till the previews came out.

All India selling price is minimum 130 CR. So losses are huge here, but not much of an issue LOL! If I was a drinker, I swear I’d be in the garden laughing my ass off with this nonsense. Epic disaster is the word. That’s without overseas losses!

Now the interesting film is JHMS. DCH has been murdered, the talisman of that film’s essence is directing SRK. Of course site became fans of Excel Entertainment with Raees & now will support European cinema to the hills of Switzerland! And become fans of China when Bahubali 2 releases there!

In all honesty I would not like this site to suddenly find love for Aamir or Hrithik or Akshay. It’s fake love & quite puking love. Who’d want this desperate love where failure is celebrated.

But if TZH also underperforms, it will change the scenario. Like PRDP also underperformed but as that year also had Bajrangi Bhaijan, it was overlooked.

Maybe different guys, don’t remember. Anyways, the point is, Aamir is in the league of his own. It doesn’t matter if media doesn’t accept it. Because its a fact. And Aamir uncle apart from being a huge star is also a terrific actor and filmmaker. So he probably isn’t going anywhere for sometime to come.

        • I seriously doubt that Sallu will be able to bring in the audiences with rehashed sequels like TZP. His 300+cr efforts have been well scripted originals: BB and Sultan (which technically was a stolen idea that just released earlier). Everything else has been below 250cr. Age has caught up to him as well, what with the short bloated chap visible onscreen in TB. He will need something exceedingly original, and not comprising this sacharine sweet persona he seems to have grown fond of portraying lately.
IMHO, Sallu will soon join SRK in the below 200cr league, and suddenly find himself in an unplanned career, just meandering from one inconsequential release to another.

He needed a bonafide success with Tubelight to remove all doubts regarding his talent and to establish himself as a big director. Kabir Khan will now go back to square one and will need a fantastic film to get back in the game. It’s a hard life for directors. One or two big flops and you have to prove yourself all over again. Example, Bhansali.

SRK won’t mind this development. It brings more parity between him and Salman. As for Aamir, he won’t have much sympathy for Salman either, after the Sultan episode. Incidentally, Salman’s best phase came when his friendship with Aamir was at its peak, and both were talking a great deal about movies, scripts etc.

      • “Before Wanted/Dabang he wasn’t even in Top 5.”

This is not correct assessment. To be fair, his movies were not working but as a STAR, he was always in TOP 5 all throughout his career even when he was giving disasters. His stardom was intact and he just needed a right project to get back to the game and Dabang gave him that platform. The movie was trash but just the promos and Salman’s character in that mode did the trick. The movie looked blockbuster even before release. It was the highest opener of that time – the 1st day and 1st weekend. After that he stepped back and stopped signing movies for friends and all and slowly got back his career. If you sign every offered movie, everyone will have flops.

Tubelight has recorded the 8th highest Monday ever but considering it was a national holiday and that coming post Ramadan it should have been higher up the chart. It should have got in the top five and if the weekend had been that blockbuster one then a top two position was assured. The collections are less than half of Bahubali – The Conclusion whose Monday did not fall on a national holiday but its probably better not to compare Tubelight or any other film in the last 15 years with that as its on a different planet. A better comparison would be Krrish 3 as that was released pre Diwali and jumped big on the national holiday which came post Diwali recording close to 30 crore nett. Below are the top ten first Monday collections of all time.

    1. Bahubali (Hindi) – 39.81 crore (Partial Holiday, Enhanced Ticket Rates)

I won’t comment on this one further. Clearly a set up which shows more about the intentions of you 3 than me.

Alright, even if you like those films at least keep it all in perspective the way fans of SRK and Salman (and others) constantly do. Because they’re always guided by facts. Some even know more about SRK’s films (when or why he is doing certain films or not) than Gauri. Similarly on the box office they always know what’s going on without resorting to cheap tricks of verification. or falling so low as to include China in the international box office. Finally I’ll say Aamir isn’t Akshay. You can’t become that blind about him.

  91. “Where r the fans?” may not have been said by Salman himslf, but it is a question that many insiders and outsiders are asking after Tubelight. The movie did not do as well as expected even on Eid. Even today it had opened dismally (as per reports) and is unlikely to grow over the day. So what happened to Salman’s starpower and BO pull that many had gloated about the last few years? What happened to Salman’s quote that his films are critic-proof? To his credit he has enough frenzied fans to pull up 84 cr over the extended weekend. The rest of his fan base clearly dont want to see him act so poorly in a mentally-slow avatar.

As for criticizing Salman/Tubelight, it has nothing much to do about being an Aamir fan or a SRK fan. Everyone is indulging in it in this blog. So why pick out one? Tubelight BO is the current topic of discussion and there is hardly anything positive to say.

Aamir is at a position where a flop from Salman or SRK or Akshay does not affect him. Period. He is a fine film-maker who is not only churning out excellent films in various genres without resorting to cliched masala stereotypes, but also setting BO records with them. He is cut above the rest and his strength does not lie on other’s failures (that is where SRK stands now). Aamir fans are also not insecure, just like Aamir himself.

I like to agree with last statement. I’ll say in general we are secure but we would like media, print to acknowledge it. At same time not BOI. I said yesterday there love is misplaced and some nice words on Aamir from them means little. I’d be embarrassed to yearn for this and am embarrassed to a huge degree to have fought for this. Likes of Forbes etc. genuine brands are giving him due credit as they did with Bahubali 2 before it became a rat race that it seems only Dangal could win. A star means little if placed in poor films period. A star means more if placed in good content oriented films.

NYKavi’s point about BB and Sultan being original is so important. They gave Salman a platform to be ‘salman’ but in an unconventional format. Add content it’s a cocktail of success.

The debate about CE and releases, competition is a red herring to place SRK above everyone. Those commentators rarely say similar things for other films – the original tweet posted was made to NOT be about SRK, but eventually the poster ended up down that path. Krish was liberated by Dangal and went as far as to say Raees has no excuses, now he’s back to 4 year old debate on CE. I’m surprised that Dangal and Bahubali 2 are not convincing examples of films doing well without holidays, competition etc. The business is extraordinary. And to put the CE business to bed, analytically the argument only has teeth if
      1) WOM is exceptional
      2) Occupancy on the lower screens is maximised.

Neither was the case. Basically if SRK comes with a big WOM film he’ll break records. Quite frankly the IF is the biggest IF. Otherwise Bahubali 2 does it, no star etc.

For Dangal and Bahubali 2 losing screens is material – they are running Houseful or 90%+ so losing screens then is an issue as you lose business. BUT because WOM is extraordinary it is made up later on as the numbers proved. Dangal dropped 70% in week 4 with competition but only 40% in week 5. Mathematically the only teeth in this debate is an upfront loss i.e day 1 competition but CE was free for some 6-7 days to earn. It’s consumed a huge chunk already. And again was the film’s occupancy at 3 Idiots, Dangal, BB or Bahubali 2 levels? It’s not considered in the same breath as these films at all – critics warmed to it probably at Sultan level maximum. Those films were loved by critics and audience.

The hypothesis testing can be applied to ANY film why only CE? SRK has had 3 big films to rectify or regain his standing but he’s not close. Without competition Dilwale & Raees were hardly going to be the big grossers, especially as content was worse than CR.

WOM has broken records not stars. Stars do it with inflation – took 3.5 years of that with CE. In between Salman peppered the market with huge initials but no lifetime records.

Bahubali 2 is the biggest middle finger to every box office debate. No star – still biggest ever. Only a big star WITH content can compete in next 18 months. After that it’s the 3 Idiots wait where a film gains a record via inflation & more screens.

Even in sports you don’t stick Messi in Celta Vigo, you have him in the best team possible as the results are more likely. The motley crew of box office experts here judge stardom on pulling through trash; yet stick that star in serious role he is broken. Aamir has his shares of Dil, RH, Fanaa etc. But no one will look at his career this way. A true cinema lover wants great films with big stars not big stars crawling their films past X milestone like it’s some big achievement. Unless you’re Maradona and take a nothing team like Napoli and win the title.

I am sure when he started the movie he din’t knew it will end up into a sub par product. Shit happens. But his reputation and fan following pulled it through with flying colours. But to expect a star to consistently do so is actually cheating the viewers. And BOI and SRK/Sallu fans are proud of a 100 cr or 200 cr crap product and challenge Aamir to deliver one. He already has, and people watch Aamir files because they are good films. It will be counter productive for his reputation and image to come up with sub par products consistently. I am sure more than BO no. his nightmare would be he losing touch with people’s sensibilities. In fact in some interviews he has has already said that.

He is known for and followed for the quality of work that he does, and D3 was an exception. Luckily, he has followed it up with films like PK and Dangal and one such blip (D3) is forgiven and forgotten by the audience.

    • It’s an index of just how bad things are that Nahta has such a negative report on a star he otherwise supports all the time within 3-4 days or release. In other words in the past he and others have supported all kinds of dubious box office results because of overall big numbers. Even he’s saying that the film will probably not touch 150. Easily Salman’s biggest failure since Dabanng. He had Jai Ho too and if you adjust for all factors Tubelight is doing the same. But Tubelight came with much greater expectations, Jai Ho had a much lower profile. Still these are two very major failures in an otherwise spectacular run. To put it into perspective Aamir has never (yes NEVER) had this kind of failure (whether Jai Ho or Tubelight) since Lagaan. In any genre. Nothing remotely close. Put differently if Tubelight had MP’s initial and trending it would be called a blockbuster without question.

LOL, Nahta himself making the comparison with Aamir in Dangal on physicality (that Salman put on weight for no reason here). Even otherwise he’s calling it one of the biggest loss-makers around.

      Like

      • Agree on the Aamir bit. Between Lagaan and Dangal, there has been absolutely no loss-makers (not only for distributors but also for all sub-distributors involved). Some of his movies did not make big profits in the distribution chain (DCH, MP, DG & Talaash), but there has been strictly no losses for anyone involved. And its not a matter of compensating distributor losses after the movie fails to deliver. Even Talaash was sold at a price which Reliance easily recovered through its theatrical run without any need for adjustments. Same goes for DG or MP. Aamir not only delivers good films, he also ensures the movie economics are fine too.

Tubelight on the other hand will cause many sub-distributors to go out of business unless Salman compensates for the losses (which is doubtful). And even if he does that later on, the film has surely not lived up to expectations and is an outright Flop. Doesnt matter how BOI spins it.

But generally, the trade guides and influential media guys out there tend to have allegiance to one big star for a period of time. Since Aamir is towering over the rest by a distance, and he has also cultivated his friendship with these two, it’s possible they don’t particularly care about going a bit out of favour with Salman. Also, perhaps Salman slighted them in some way.

In any case, their sharp criticism is most unexpected.

        • Salman was very sharp with movie critics before Tubelight release. Tbh much of what Salman said was not wrong. Just a dumb time to say it. It was an open invitation to ridicule him but also Kabir Khan – which Salman should have thought about.

Nahata has been on rampage since his review. The reviews here were distinctly scathing with respect to previous Salman films. I’m sure this does impact to some audiences, at same time I bet the film is not half as bad as being made out to be. I’m guessing Salman’s acting is though.

There is no science in this IMO. The movie was sold the biggest price is all over the internet and then grossing the lowest Eid release and movie being not good and TOTAL rejection from the audience, they have nothing to hang onto to it to delay the judgement. If it looked crossing 200 crs, they would have hanged onto it like PRDP but here it looks around 125 crs. It is like Mohenjodaro on a higher scale and solo release.

The last film which released on Eid during Priyadarshan’s peak and Salman-Kareena pairing. All the critics gave up on the 1st day itself was KYON KI. Strangely, Tubelight reminds lot of folks about Kyon ki with the mentally challenged role Salman played. He repeated his mistake again.

It’s Salman Khan. In reality this larger than life onscreen persona works – BB he still stays true despite an unconventional setting just like HSSH. He’s still the good man, doing the good deeds etc. I did not see Sultan fully but he’s still Salman here to the tee, a beefy guy in an action flick. Maybe a bit of story in it.

But moment the explicit questions of acting are asked he is not accepted. He doesn’t have a fan base that likes him in these roles at all! He so much says it himself. His films are incredibly formulaic. A big song, big entrance, some mast mast, some big dialogues etc. some wooing, some beat ups. The only thing that is magnetic is some dialogues and music. Right through the years I’ve watched MPK, HAHK etc many times. The music never disappointed, you remember the filmi dialogues like ‘no sorry no thank you’ or the recent ones from Wanted or Dabanng.

He’s hardly presenting a film – mostly just buffoonery. I criticize SRK and Akshay a lot more because at least they can act! Just find a bliming good story and act. Salman is just himself.

Hindi Medium has to outperform for 3 weeks to get the respect. Salman usually needs 3 days! There is huge prejudice in this. I can’t remember Hindi Medium commentary but I bet it was negative (with hint of a chance if things improve) at start and progressively positive but still just a small success, nothing to speak of in a big sense.

Tubelight is more so so start and hold on let’s wait for Eid and then decide then start negative stuff. Pure rubbish. Writing was on wall day 1. I don’t like writing a film off on day 1 but if that’s what you do with other films be consistent!

Everyone knew we have a flop in our hands, but to gauge the extent of losses one needed to see how much push Salman’s core base will give this one on Eid and day after. It eventually did add 19 cr on Eid and 12 cr more on Tuesday. Without Eid it would have been earning in single digits on Monday and Tuesday, and would have just touched 100 cr or ended below 100 cr. But with the Eid push it will now get into the Raees range of 130 cr.

Hardly any star can survive such an onslaught, including Aamir.

A bad film or boring or both would never last long Eid or no Eid. This is social media world where so much information is available to make sound financial entertainment decisions. Thursday night middle East reports were poor.

Dangal was completely opposite. No way the film would have opened as high as it did without the Industry & social media feelers in lead up to release.

The Bhai fan thing is funny but quite important to address. If by in large everything you hear about a film of your favourite star is negative – do you still fork out $50 for family to watch film plus all food. I seriously doubt it.

In the world of social media I’ll admit a lot of my movie watching decisions are made by reviews, response, box office etc. I am sure lots of people will do this. We walked out of Shaandaar 10 mins in (my wife’s choice). It’s important for me that if I’m having a date night I’ve vetted the movie enough to know we’ll like it. • For Salman’s muslim fans (his core fan-base), watching a Bhai film on Eid is like a religious act in India. Thats not the case overseas. The 30 cr odd that came in last two days, despite all the negativity on social media and the poor reviews and shocking BO reports and so on, is a testament to the fact. Yes, it came out lower than expected (lower by 25% from my expectations), but if you neglect that, then your prediction is only 100 cr on Day 1. Re-calibrate it with this extra 30 cr and you arrive at the actual figure (likely at this point).

With v limited growth over the weekend, many thought the collections would remain stable over the Eid period. So many predicted 150 cr. Now that the collections are out, the predictions are re-calibrated to 130 cr by almost everyone. If someone could vouch for 130 cr figure on Day 1, then good for him.

        • I’ve said this before but I consider this whole religious coding of Salman’s reception off the mark. I think this is simply a huge myth. Eid is a holiday, Salman has attached himself to this, I’m sure many of his Muslim fans like the connection. But it’s not as if these fans wouldn’t show up if he had a Diwali or Christmas release! So SRK had the big Diwali date for the longest time, people showed up. The same for Aamir and Christmas-New Year. Now it’s certainly true that Salman himself plays into this religious coding quite actively (and problematically). The whole bad boy image and the ambiguous ‘bhai’ label (the gangster et al) allows him to remain the outsider or as I said before a kind of ‘terrorist’ in the system (blowing up Bollywood multiplex genres, saying subversive stuff on reality TV and so on). So he certainly doesn’t mind being religiously coded. Nonetheless the box office reporting on him tends to follow very easy communal lines. ‘Muslims giving bhai the big boost’ on Eid! Yeah right! All audiences are the same. They don’t waste money because it’s Eid or the actor is a Muslim or a Hindu or whatever. Similarly holidays don’t save flop films except on the margins. Salman’s presence already helped the film on day 1 and 2, otherwise the numbers might have been even worse. We’ve seen this with Christmas-New Year as well. Aamir prospers because he makes films that people love. Don2 or Dilwale didn’t prosper with the same release date! When the films weren’t right neither Diwali nor Christmas worked for SRK. We’ve just seen Salman not just fail on Eid but fail massively. These myths should be retired. But they keep coming up because we tend to believe in these things anyway. It’s just about the holidays, nothing more!

        • Very true satyam: in sum, people / “we” project our own communal coding (Muslims vote as a bloc, perhaps they even watch films on Eid en bloc, etc.) and project it onto the other. The fact is that Salman’s communal coding is a carefully deployed strategy (it is as much for Muslims as for Hindus across the ideological spectrum, enabling Salman to preserve both the “outsider hero” tag as well as the “acceptable Muslim” tag; this bhai flies kites with Modi!), and works because of rather communal discourses that have gained ground over the last few decades — only Salman is wealthier as a result. It’s important that the rest of us resist this sort of thing (god knows there is enough polarization to go around to begin with); not to mention that it’s just lazy thinking.

Now this is an instance of the sequel being more successful than the original, and his achievement is undeniable, but in aesthetic terms he is derivative of Sanjay Dutt…

This is borderline offensive. Contrary to the data, plain and simple: Bajrangi would have made as much had it been released on Diwali or Christmas, it was just a darn good film; and frankly given Muslims’ percentage of the population, that’s hardly enough to account for Salman’s Eid openings (especially when you factor that Muslims in urban India tend to be poorer, and a lot of these grosses are powered by rather expensive multiplex tickets — that’s a lot of Edhi expenditure!)

        • Imtiaz Ali is in the same ship as Kabir Khan. He made an excellent one with Jab We Met, but post that, every other one he’s made has been a disappointment in some way, and certainly so at the boxoffice!

Now, the best case scenario for JHMS is if it proves to be a delightful rom-com. But going by Imtiaz’s record, right from Love Aaj Kal to Tamaasha, he’s never had a clean and unanimous critical success, leave alone a commercial one. That’s the problem here. It might be a medium-success with 5 out of 10 people liking it. Now, this kind of verdict would have been extremely poor for SRK if Tubelight had also been a blockbuster, following the mighty Dangal, and SRK’s own tepid BO performance with Raees.

But Satyam is right. Tubelight failure takes off some of the pressure from SRK. He can get away now with a medium success.

The film doesn’t look edgy enough to be a big hit or to flop. It probably lies in the safe zone and unless Imtiaz has gone insane and screwed it up, I see it being a comfortable hit.

As I said, Akshay has been doing that for years and his movies are at superhits at 120crs. Folks even say Akshay kumar is ahead than SRK based on that.

Ok forget 150, what if Imtiaz ali movie does 200cr? Will it change anything? What about 250cr? I can easily imagine remarks.. oh, its half of Baahubali 2 collections. So, nothing is satisfactory at this stage unless its over 400 crores. That will not come suddenly out of bad form. He needs couple of clean hits to get out and back in the grove and only then there is a possibility of a big grosser sometime in future. Srk is not even in the same realm currently.

        • I think for SRK more than outperforming Aamir and Salman, it is a question of holding on to his position as one of the top 3. Getting a hit with JHMS does not change the equation – and Master is right that it makes no difference whether it is 100 or 150 or 200 – because the level of the game has changed.

A hit does not make a significant difference to SRK – except in that he will retain his present ranking and add some much-needed vigour to his career.

However, an outright flop makes a huge difference. A Fan, Raees, Dilwale and another average or flop film will certainly place him below Akshay.

I think the perception of selling it low prices is silly. No one will sell the movie short(unless Roshan did with Kaabil) and Srk rarely does. He even didn’t sell Paheli or Billu short. Reading the sources, it appears 65 crores India rights is the best offer they got and knowing Imtiaz Ali’s sensibilities they don’t see a huge money spinner currently. If one is distributor they will cover the bases and assume 120-140 is safe expectation, anything beyond is bonus, so the buying reflected that. I don’t think massy distributors will jump SRK-Imtiaz combo hoping that min collection will be 200 crore to start the negotiations.

The movie can always surprise and go near 200 or over it but it will be that – a SURPRISE!!

So yes it’s unfair to expect an Imtiaz Ali film to do 200 CR but trade see’s SRK. It’ll be judged on those grounds. 150 CR + expectations as it’s SRK before Imtiaz Ali.

In the same way you should describe Dangal beyond SURPRISE. As I remember you said 150-200 CR and Lagaan 2 like moment is enough for a film like that. So at near 400 CR what is the superlative word?

Personally a lower price makes sense. Distribution companies must realise at some point the economics of earnings of theatrical revenue is not a one day thank you mam deal, it’s at least a solid 10 day earning period. SRK with Dilwale, Fan and Raees does not promise this currently. So they have the bargaining power here. So indeed SRK kind of needs a period of proving the doubters before he can command more. It’s supply and demand. Throw in Imtiaz Ali and it’s probably more risky than the usual YRF.

        • You reply and yet there is no relation between your comment and mine. I’m talking about the distributors who are buying the film.. for them it boils down to the combination of actor with director, theme of the movie and all. If trade and everyone is expecting 200 cr min, they would have been bidding the movie and the distribution price would have been around 100 crs. If it is 65, doesn’t it show that no one is that excited for a huge gross?

You can’t say trade expects 200 crs from JHMS and is red hot but distributors are willing to buy only at 65 crs max. Its opposite right? Tubelight was red hot and all the bidding lead the NH distributors to purchase the movie over 130 crores. I don’t see the same enthusiasm for JHMS. So, why is trade expecting 200 crore? With the distribution price, 120-140 is safe and 200 will be a surprise and bonus for distributors.

Yes, I said Lagaan wasn’t the biggest hit of the era but it was the most critically acclaimed movie in decades. So, even if it achieves Lagaan type critical acclaim and does even 150-200 crs, it would have achieved its purpose. It went far beyond its scope in collections regards to the subject matter. Business wise, it has crossed even Lagaan but personally critically I still rate Lagaan over Dangal vastly.

It’s not that Salman doesn’t try, but when the actor sits with a pack of sheep trying to suggest loneliness, your heart actually beats for the sheep.

And for all the tomfoolery and clowning around, this feels like a truly stressed out performance; he doesn’t seem to be having fun here.

There’s a passing scene where Lakshman gets a glimpse of wartime horrors.

    He is devastated.

He feels it in his stomach, the horrors, and tries to throw up. But then, he only manages to work up a spit.

In a weird way, that scene becomes a perfect summation for what the performance aspires for, and what it finally delivers.

If the film makes 130 cr total, it wudnt be a well trended movie and will have a perception of an average grosser even though distributors will recover their costs. It will just be like another Talaash at BO.

What SRK needs at this point is a movie with positive WOM, which if he gets with JHMS, then the movie will surely do much more than 130 cr (Raees range). After all its SRK in his strength genre of romcoms.

    Like

    • The Talaash analogy is actually a poor one, since romcom is a much more audience-friendly genre than a supernatural suspense drama. Talaash more than doubled its weekend collection of 40 cr to end at 90 cr. An acceptable yardstick for JHMS will be at least tripling its weekend collection. But for that it will need good audience acceptance as it will face competition from TEPK from its second week.

    • I think the distribution costs of JHMS and 2.0 gives us ample pointers to what the star status of SRK and Akshay are at this point within the industry. Its a progressive curve for Akshay. He has been doing small scale films and selling them at low costs to get a string of hits with 100-125 cr grossers. But now he is doing a sci-fi action extravaganza which is fetching Hindi DC of 80 cr. Whereas SRK, after a string of low grossers (Dilwale, Fan, Dear Zindagi, Raees) has his film in strength genre to be sold at only 65 cr.

The industry and the trade are expecting greater dividends from Akshay than SRK. Any star ranking should take this into consideration. And if TEPK grosses more than JHMS, it will be the final nail in the coffin for this debate.

Personally think 2.0 is a gamble. Akshay Kumar in this kind of role is vastly different to Airlift, Baby, Rustom etc that national hero type.

Films probably well over budget and Bahubali 2 has upped the ante on this film more than any other. It’ll be the official film to pit South and North post Bahubali 2, so it’s got huge pressure – unfairly. Film has an air of boom or bust. The focus on Rajni as hero is what Tamil Nadu will love but Akshay’s villain role is against the grain for Hindi cinema but it might be a welcome change too! Bahubali 2 did nearly 5 times business of Bahubali 1. 2.0 will need 100 CR + to match this. Akshays range is not that much more. It all adds up to not much more than 150 CR + in Hindi.

The film carries way more risk than anything out there. The flop that is Tubelight could easily be dwarfed by 2.0 if it misfires at All India level. JHMS ‘should’ be safe as hills.

Anyway Akshay be applauded for what he’s doing. This is his biggest risk yet – a monster here and legitimately if his role has a lot to do with it he’s in the big league. Legitimately this is a film if things go right a 300 CR is possible. Bahubali 2 has opened the door now, will 2.0 run through it?

        Like

        • Yes, 2.0 is a gamble due to its high stake. Its the costliest production out there with reportedly 400-450 cr budget. Shankar is a thorough entertainer, but his films have never really set the hindi belt on fire. But I think the sequel factor may act in favor of it (everyone I know has seen Robo in TV). And Akshay can draw his usual 100-125 cr, if he indeed is playing an important role beside Rajni in this film.

80 cr distribution price implies the distributors are expecting around 150 cr from this one in Hindi, which a reasonable forecast. I think even TEPK can get to 150 cr, going by the promos.

    http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/tubelight-flops-domestic-box-office/

‘Tubelight’ has flopped at the domestic box office and Salman Khan has failed for the first time this decade during Eid. The film failed to show the kind of growth that it needed on the big holiday for Eid. It has collected Rs 83 crore in 4 days at the box office, with the lowest collections coming on the Eid holiday.

The circuits and centres that were affected by Razman showed good growth on Monday, but business witnessed major falls at places where the impact of Eid was limited over the weekend. The film could collect around 110-115 crore by the end of its first week and the second weekend will decide whether the film can go on to become the highest Hindi grosser of the year.

The struggle for a film like ‘Tubelight’ during Eid to easily beat a 132-crore grosser like ‘Raees’ has sent shock-waves within the industry. It also shows the extremely unpredictable side of film business, as most in the trade were expecting it to comfortably cross the 100 crore mark by the end of the Eid holiday on Monday.

Meanwhile, Salman’s golden run during Eid has finally come to an end after 6 consecutive box office blockbusters. Between 2010 to 2016, the megastar had 6 Eid releases – Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan – and almost all of them went on to be record-openers and major box office grossers.

His latest release, directed by the same man (Kabir Khan) who gave him his biggest grosser and arguably his career-best film (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), is also likely to give him his biggest failure since ‘Veer’ in January 2010.

The consistency that Salman has shown over the years – making even the most mediocre and critically rejected films, into major commercial successes at the box office – by his sheer presence and stardom, is incredible to say the least.

Questions over his stardom are now being raised by the very people who hailed him as the top star not too long ago – which also goes to show that the only thing that matters for the film industry and trade is the last Friday – even if it is for a star who carried two out of his last three films over the 300 crore mark.

The official collections of the film are as follows:

    Tubelight Collections Growth / Drop
    Day 1 (Friday) 21.15 crore –
    Day 2 (Saturday) 21.17 crore – 1%
    Day 3 (Sunday) 22.45 crore + 6%
    Day 4 (Monday) 19.09 crore – 15%
    India Total Collections 83.86 crore

  105. It’s also time to get rid of another people (not that I’m holding my breath for this to happen..). A lot of times when films flop people use the competition thing as an excuse. So Dilwale was 140 or whatever buy without competition it might have done a lot more. This is certainly possibly inasmuch as competition is always a factor. I agree. On the other hand it’s equally possible that Dilwale was rejected as much as Tubelight! And that it wouldn’t have made much more even without competition. Or looking at it from the other side maybe Tubelight did get a worse reception than Dilwale and would have done even worse than that film with competition. My point simply is that while competition is always a factor this cannot simply be assumed each time just because one wants to offer an excuse. Sure it makes a difference in the first day or two probably but once the WOM truly kicks in it’s not competition that pulls down a film (BMCM had a bigger week 1 than KKHH but ultimately the latter was a much bigger grosser). Again competition is a factor (some of us have talked about it for years). It’s just not an excuse!

    Like

    • Plus competition = publicity = potentially more interest. I kind of understand the lack of screens argument as China shows mechanically how figures can change day to day but that is not competition. And that only holds for much liked films.

Dilwale was atrocious anyway. It made BM look like LOTR. It was an obvious choice.

If competition was such a big deal, do what JHMS did, move forward a week. Or do what Raees did and compete and make up excuses.

Maybe these actors are smart enough to know they’ve made a duff film so they intentionally release against competition to have a fallback excuse.

      • This is a complete misreading of the film (not that I expect better from those sorts!). The key moment in this sense is the title credits one where the ‘mother’ (Mother India?!) is being simultaneously given blood by all three sons. In other words what would Desai’s response be to the Hindutva mindset? That even if the sons were born Hindu it doesn’t matter. Because the nation is just richer with minorities (an idea that Hindutva minorities appreciate a great deal when they’re living in the US or UK and when they’re suddenly all against Trump or Farage or whoever!). So Desai recodes the Hindu family of his film. Now it will forever be marked by the Muslim and Christian presence. This is not just idealism or a hopeful vision. It is in fact pragmatism. Whether one likes history or not it cannot be erased. When people try to do this the result is great violence (from holocausts to lynchings). However that history is still not erased. But Desai also knew things that people have either conveniently forgotten or choose to ignore. That the ‘Hindu’ is exactly like the Muslim or the Christian in being an outsider to India (which is why the word ‘diku’ or outsider/foreigner/exploiter is the word tribals had originally for Hindus and then extended to the Muslims and British as well, among others). This is simply true historically. Linguistic and other evidence long ago confirmed this. A comprehensive DNA study just the other day did as well. Not to mention other kinds of evidence gained from other sciences.

To restate all of this concisely it is actually not the case that you keep going back in time and everyone is a Hindu (the very word is a British invention!). It’s exactly the opposite. This is what AAA is celebrating. Not just contemporary Indian diversity but also ancient Indian diversity. By the way even in the fictional ancient past of Baahubali 2 there are brief scenes early on with minorities. And while I have some issues with the coding of the film neither father nor son could be imagined as disagreeing with Desai on this score! And doesn’t the ethical gesture of the father in the second part makes this clear? He’d rather give up his kingdom and his mother than break an ethical obligation to the woman he loves. This is the classic masala gesture! But it’s also the iconic moment of the Mahabharata. Krishna’s injunction to Arjuna to follow the ethical obligation rather than think about blood relationships and so on. Or in the masala spin (in Yash Chopra’s otherwise horrible Trishul remake there is this one good line — meri maa ne mera naam Arjun rakha taki jab main ranbhoomi main utroon to bhool jaoon ki kaun apna hai aur kaun paraya). Krishna too would understand Desai perfectly! Certainly Desai knew this stuff. And only the most pathetic readers of the Gita (of which there are many today) are oblivious to the ethical code of the work.

        • Perhaps, Satyam, one might re-phrase this to say that Desai’s God is the Lord of Circumstance, of contingency; and is wholly other and irreducible to the prosaic, and rather un-Indian, deities of this or that -ism.

Perhaps he wasn’t thinking after Sonam’s indecent beach run!)… a great coda to this tradition is offered by Dev, of course, and Bachchan’s last few lines in the film, as powerful and poignant a summary of dharma as I can think of (you speak of the many misreaders of the Gita who abound today; Nihalani knew that too, hence the only end for those who would follow dharma is in fact death; the Gita’s ethics simply cannot exist within the frame Dev finds himself in, so he must die. That his name means “god” should give everyone pause.)

So UK exhibitors are stupid as well. The audience’s have never had a huge Salman craze. Only SRK. Tubelight – not a single person I have met is interested in the film and this pre Eid, post Eid etc write ups are just not seeing the point – rejection is not retrievable even with freebies or reduced ticket prices. In recent days I have watched the self righteous outbursts of some I have known professionally and worked with in the media for many years with part amusement, but mostly utter shock- can these people really NOT see through their own humbug and hypocrisy; can they not recall their past actions and statements; can those who didn’t have ONE good word to say about the other till one month ago now pretend to be bonded by ‘friendship’ and ‘principle’?!! I recall conversations with some of these people and how they would run down and bitch out the same folk they are now holding up as exemplary. I also recall moments where principles were actually involved and all these self righteous warriors were more than supplicant, because it was the ‘practical’ thing to do or because they didnt dare to speak up against their newsroom bosses or authority figures!!

I have personally fought against the axing of interviews & stories ( and been ‘punished’ for it by these same people ) and can testify that not ONE of those today proclaiming to stand for anti-establishment free press even OPENED THEIR MOUTHS! It’s really amusing to see the complete lack of self awareness in these people. The one thing I can’t stand in people in fakeness. Done with frauds and their cherry picked ‘positions’. Done with socially pretending to be friendly with those who don’t add value and meaning to my life and those whom I see as hypocrites. New beginnings today, and my friends, you know who you are.

Love to you for staying real in the city of djinns and shadows and so much bark without bite . Actually I can deal with bigots much better than fake liberals. With the former you know what you have and what your battle needs to be. As for the latter, they are just so busy feeling superior in their echo chambers, no matter if each one of them would compromise ( and has) if that were the ‘practical’ thing to do or if it “paid their bills” ( and I know for a fact that such compromise attempts have been on for many years and still are, while overtly the preaching and hectoring carries on publicly!) ! These fake liberals of our media world – and their disingenuous anger is like the secularism of the Congress- bent and abandoned when needed, clutched on to when convenient- I am so done with these frauds and their fulminations. They are welcome to stew in their own humbug! Whatever this noise is – its not about Free Press principles. I wish it were, but it so totally aint.

    Q. Don’t you agree now that SRK is simply biggest when it comes to crowd-pulling?

    A. One of the biggest, certainly. Is he the biggest currently? That’s debatable, because FAN released on a partial holiday and did 19 crore. Actual value reducing the holiday advantage would be 15 crore. All these are only perceptions. After averting the Sultan clash last year, Salman appeared invincible and much bigger. One below-par opening and the other two (Aamir and SRK) look bigger. If Jab Harry Met Sejal doesn’t get a huge initial, again questions will be raised.

I’ll get to each response in one big one. A preference is not not an infinite result or endorsement. It’s like one saying Lagaan is preferred to Dangal. Not every minute or moment can be disected to arrive here. It’s an overall or general assessment.

      1) SRK and Salman have bigger stardom than Aamir in their strength genres. As an overall box office star Aamir challenges this as he is far more trusted in films like RDB, TZP or Dangal. So overall he’s positioned higher. Also in big films when he brings his A game he is bigger (Ghajini vs. RNBDJ just weeks apart, Aamir simply brushed aside the record set).
      2) They may have bias to SRK but it nowhere to level of BOI. The summation of Aamir’s results are too big to consider him less than SRK or Salman. And yes SRK is ahead of Akshay. The latters strongest gross is not close to SRK or SRK’s potential. That can change.
      3) Master – every site (Indicine, addatoday, Bollywood arena) adjusted Kaabil figures up. You left the forum. It was clear from their sources Kaabil was higher than BOI but lower than producer. Go back and check if you want. The BOI figure is redundant for Kaabil. I have Krish figures from 2006 where they’ve underreported. Munna posted centre figures for Kaabil where there was teeth in BOI underreporting. You won’t believe or check, that’s your decision. You will always believe SRK over anything else.
      4) Last q from Indicine I don’t disagree or agree it is very dependant on film. As I said RNBDJ SRK’s strength was destroyed by an Aamir marketed Ghajini. The marketing itself was unique.

IMHO I debate box office results different to stardom. The latter is the concerts, waving fans, media glitz plus box office – everything about being popular like pop culture. SRK and Salman play this space well. But at the ticket window what matters most is whose film do you expect to deliver and which star do you trust. Aamir is so far ahead on this score. Stick either 3 in Krish and Hrithik is bigger. Stick all 3 in RNBDJ SRK is bigger. Stick all 3 in 3 Idiots Aamir is bigger. Talaash, MP, RDB, Ghajini, Dangal – he’ll kick all their butts. He’s got way too much goodwill. Even Bajrangi Bhaijaan is an Aamir kind of film. He’d have beaten PK with it.

A big gross is not just about star, it’s got so many other factors. Some favour Salman, some SRK, some Hrithik but overall Aamir ticks way too many boxes.

My cricket analogy would be Aamir = Dravid. SRK = Ganguly. Salman = Yuvraj. Dravid had ability to play tests and ODI. Either format he was dependable, a huge wicket, the rock, technically sound etc. Ganguly kind of just an offside batsman, good or great when he gets going but always (Dravid became superior to Ganguly later in career like Aamir to SRK) in the shadow of Dravid. Yuvraj a big hitter but no real technique (hits 6’s but can be out anytime – kind of a luxury). I chose no Tendulkar because we know who that is – Satyam best placed to explain it. He’ll probably say Rajesh Khanna is Ganguly, Dilip Kumar is Dravid and Rajendra Kumar is Yuvraj and these 3 Khan’s are like Waterboys.

Either way I’ve acknowledged past of Indicine is quite SRK focused. Plus I am not holding the ‘I love Indicine card’. Anyone who follows my comments on box office will know I have the trust no one policy and make your call across multiple sources (including BOI). BOI won’t be wrong always but if you can’t see such obvious bias I won’t help you. Plus I’m not a shareholder of Indicine for you to believe in the site. Nor am I defending every response of theirs – utopia like this NEVER exists. It’s just a general preference.

That Indicine went for producer total is there call – they’ve gone against there own analysis so they are wrong. And frankly whatever way I position this with you – you’ll only go RCE way anyway.

Stuff like this is obviously stupid. Again I wholeheartedly disagree. And I beg of you that pulling out every tweet or Q&A is an insecure way to debate this. I’ve ratified my star ratings for years. NGers will know my position. As far back as 2006 when Aamir delivered RDB and Fanaa after opening records that backed up MP record opening I opened the debate with many. That with 3 different films he is #1 star even if Hrithik had Krish and D2 in same years. Since then NOTHING has dispelled that. Ghajini was marketing genius, 3 Idiots arguably the most entertaining film of 00’s decade, D3 blockbuster opening on non holiday Fri, PK record grosser, Dangal record grosset + China rising. Salman’s feats are astonishing but he never delivered an outright top grosser.

Any graph of screens vs. grosses will show ONLY Aamir has maximised the Hindi market from Bollywood films. It’s more or less a straight line. The others just big openers and fizzlers. CE and BB the only outliers. Bahubali 2 proves the underperformance of Bollywood overall but no one can tag that to Aamir as he’s top dog. If there is any flag bearer of Hindi cinema in this millennium it is him. The combination of quality and quantum no one is reaching. This to me is undisputable.

SRK since CDI chose the bandwagon path. Farah, Karan, Aditya, Rohit – he missed the boat on Hirani. He won’t regain an eroded career unless a big change happens.

Salman has never been aligned to quality so in his world he’s done remarkable things to turn around a meandering career. Tubelight is a big glitch, how big I don’t know.

I’ve always had Aamir #1 through since 2008 as Ghajini validated the 2006 prophecy i.e. Ghajini had to happen to prove my gut theory (many others too), without it, it was only that, a prophecy.

Master’s prophecy is still to be proved so let’s see. I fully believe SRK in the right film can deliver BUT 1) Age is not on his side 2) He has hardly proved to be a sharp tool in picking scripts, how that suddenly changes I don’t know. Maybe he beds with Aamir instead of Salman and Aamir throws him a free one like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, that he did with Salman.

Ultimately I place my bet on the one showing best judgement, only Aamir gets there. In magnitude he is well ahead. In magnetic screen presence the other 2 are ahead. But as a purchaser of cinema tickets I want just a good film. I’m no man shouting kapda gado or an aunty sobbing when SRK dies, Aamir’s filmography is too strong – bottom line.

  111. Sample another contradiction:

“Q. SRK or Akshay? Who is doing better 2007-2017?

    A. There’s no comparison. SRK has always worked at a much higher level, both in terms of opening and lifetime collections. His failures collect more than Akshay’s biggest grossers. Having said that, Akshay does smaller films, shoots them in record time and in recent times his films have been more profitable for all involved too. He is the backbone for exhibitors, if he can give four 100 crore grossers every year – there’s nothing like it. SRK films should ideally be collecting upwards of 200 crore every time, given the starts that he gets, but his last 3-4 films have fallen well short.”

      Q. So SRK in a clash managed to do 20.42 crs & Salman in a solo + Eid Release just manages to cross 20 crs.. Even Fan did approx 19 crs which a niche film.. So isn’t SRK the biggest crowd puller as far as opening is concerned?

      A. Comparing Raees directly to Tubelight isn’t a fair comparison, because Raees had some of the best trailer and promos for any film in recent times. Tubelight trailer was rejected. Also FAN did 19 crore on a partial holiday. End of it all, there’s no point comparing the two or three (Aamir included). They are all huge in their own way. Depending on film, all are capable of bumper opening. SRK and Salman are sheer fan-following and craze, Aamir’s stardom is different but he brings in bigger audience for his films. Let’s hope all three do well and take the industry forward in tough ‘Post-Bahubali’ times.

Basically stop chasing BO or prestige. Go back to basics. Get some respectability and hopefully some good movie should come along and he can then prove himself. If not at least he will stop the comparison with Aamir and Salman and live peacefully doing some good work. But is he interested in doing good work?? Clearly Aamir and Salman are giving bigger grossers and consistent hits but the question was the opening of movies. If you still think Srk can’t create opening day record, you must be deluded. The openings have been always strong. It doesn’t matter if it crossed lifetime records or not. If Raees was solo release, it would have created 1st day record especially if around festive time. You must be deluded to not to trust that. In that aspect 3 Khans are cut above the rest. I don’t think Akshay or Ajay will break 40 cr barrier even on solo release now.

The last solo from SRK was HNY and before that CE. Both did open greatly and even closer, if not the 1st day records.

No Aishwariya, no Deepika, no Katrina, no Kajol, no Kareena etc were touched before SRK or Salman (latter no Deepika). So in this case Aamir’s hardly bolstered his films with huge co-stars. Aamir had a 36 cr something nett non holiday record for D3 if I am not wrong and it even had a life time collection record, but how much did D3 help Aamir’s career overall. Absolutely zero!!! If Aamir followed one D3 with another D3, trust me even his die hard fans would think twice before spending on the ticket of Aamir Khan movie. Going to movie is an expensive affair, specially if you go with family. It has become a luxury. Thankfully he din’t. And IMO there are no. of other variables that can influence an opening apart form the star. Genre, trailers, marketing/hype, star’s last couple of movie’s overall impression in people’s mind etc.
Now someone can give example of Salman who hasn’t been doing great stuff but still achieved this success. Well he is an unexplained phenomenon probably on the lines of Rajesh Khanna. I don’t think so, it is very clear. Maybe you can’t comprehend it yet. Those who had success like MPK and HAHK have fan following very deep. They can go through lower phases but can bounce back anytime of their career. Do you know why Amitabh was destined to come back hugely after disastrous comeback in 1996? Coz his fan following is the deepest and he was bound to come back though it was 2000 and 2001. Calling such stuff as ‘unexplained phenomenon’ is silly. Same thing with Rajesh Khanna. He’s not unexplained, he was different than every other star before and created a unique stylized form and it gave him huge fan following and he had tremendous talent for that space. The phenomena should be how his stardom ended not how he achieved.

And yes I agree on Amitabh. He is not an unexplained phenomenon of course. He didn’t achieve his superstardom by luck. He achieved it by talent, class and style. Totally deserved!!! IMO greatest movie star of Indian cinema. But lets not forget there came a point even he was past it and he had to lower his game to survive and revive. And his revival was one of a kind.

Lol. You replied under that Indicine’s Q&A about opening and called it deluded. I replied to that and you keep continuing it. If its not about opening, why call it deluded then?

Regarding frustration, there is none. I have no hesitation to accept that Srk is not doing great currently and behind Aamir and Salman. But many of them here don’t understand the basic point that just having a favorite doesn’t mean they need to the TOP always. Just having a fav doesn’t make me lesser intelligent than someone who’s joining the bandwagon of a successful star. I’ve mentioned it recently and it apparently got deleted to make someone happy and stop his crying.

Even today if I watch Federer match, I support him fully knowing he’s past his prime and will never be the one he was! You can claim my comments if I say that SRK will give 400 crore tom or something and I’m not so blind fanatic.

And I never said anyone to stop supporting their favorite star. I am just saying it’s not easy to see their downward spiral. Will happen to anyone. But doesn’t mean you need to stop supporting him or her. I used to love Sridevi when I was a kid and I still get excited when I know she has a movie coming in. Like for almost 5 years Fed din’t win the slam, but I kept waiting he will someday win his 18th. The wait was hurting and even I knew he wasn’t the Federer of 2006 or 2007.

And tbh I am suggesting a way SRK can actually revive. And I think lowering the game can really work for him. Will take pressure off him and will give him opportunities to explore.

Why say sense, why not say directly that you ‘hope’ or ‘wish’ it is like Ra.One.

LMAO.. Hilarious.. apart from the VFX there is not even 0.0001% similarity between both films or film makers or concept. Anand Rai’s movie is as simple as Tanu Wed Manu but the only thing is the hero is dwarf and using VFX for only that portion. Anand said, if you don’t know its not real dwarf acting, you wouldn’t see it as VFX movie at ll and it is as simple as all his other movies with real life locations and similar setting in Meerut. Once you remove the dwarf part, it depends only on the story now and how it is presented.

Same thing happened with FAN. The VFX for the character and if you take a duplicate SRK doing the younger role, you don’t need VFX. The VFX wouldn’t help the story at all. Whereas Ra.One is heavy on VFX and its stunts and presentation of super heroes or villains. The VFX were fine in Ra.One and yet the acceptance was not there regards to the story connect.

  112. Shah Rukh Khan plays a dwarf is Aanand L Rai’s untitled next. The superstar revealed that his firm, Red Chillies VFX, is working on the special effects of the film, and he is certain that it will change the way technology is used in Indian movies.

A source working on the project reveals that the makers have used the same technology used for Hollywood films like ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord Of The Rings.’

Also Read: Shah Rukh Khan on his ‘dwarf’ role: My look is very different from Kamal Haasan’s in ‘Appu Raja’

“The makers will not superimpose SRK’s face on a dwarf actor. They will shoot using Forced Perspective, a technique that employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger or smaller than it actually is. It will make SRK look shorter,” says the source, adding that oversized costumes and shoes will add to the desired look.

The movie will also feature a revisited version of Shashi Kapoor’s hit track, ‘Hum Ko Tum Pe Pyar Aaya.’ “SRK will be seen dancing to the classic from ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965). It’s an amusing sequence in the film.”

  114. SRK at this point needs a film with positive WOM, not a big opener. I dont understand why SRK fans are so hung up on SRK’s opening pull. If JHMS opens big and then fizzles out like Raees, it will not help his case. Rather, if it opens low and shows some good legs, he will gain some momentum. Maybe then he will be in a better position to deliver a big one.

    Like

    • Actually he needs couple of successes like a positive BO result or a critically acclaimed performance. He can then take it from there. That is what I am stressing at. Lower your game and expectations and explore. Infact as a rival star’s fan that is exactly what will scare me. A 200 cr crap like HNY or huge opening is not going to scare anyone. It looks unlikely that he will out of the blue get a 400 cr grosser. Again, I am not saying he can’t. Infact anyone can. Even Ranbir Kapoor can. But likelihood of SRK doing it is better than Ranbir, but in reality even SRK’s chances are dim at this moment. He needs to bring in momentum.

      • Again to clarify, by ‘anybody can’ I meany any well established star can. Hence gave example of Ranbir. Don’t take it literally.

      • Sometimes the market and recent BO performances can also lower the expectations and force one to lower his game. That seems to be the case now with SRK, with the re-negotiated and lowered distribution price for JHMS. Its not necessarily a bad thing. He just needs it to be a decent film and the BO hit tag will come easy. With some goodwill and momentum maybe dwarf film will do really well.

      • I think his strategy has been that, just that script sense has let him down. If one sees his last 3 movies after Dilwale, they are not movies you will usually think SRK will sign.

Fan, DZ and Raaes are movies , I doubt he would have done few years back. These are not movies which will open big but if the script is good could have given lot of critical acclaim and box office success. Raees might be the exception here but the treatment of the movie was not full blown masala unlike what the trailors promised (and that’s what held it back) .So I guess there has been some thought to go for performance based movies rather than Rohit Shetty and Farah Khan type of movies. Even the next 2 seems on the same path. When you are signing for Imtiaz you are not doing it to aim for a 300 cr grosser.

Though the strategy has been there in place, the execution has been faulty. Fan and Raees both failed script wise though his performance has been good. and DZ was too small a movie to really make a difference. Lets see what happens to the next 2. This strategy is sustainable for SRK only if he also chooses the correct script. Hope his next 2 have a good script in place.

        • DZ was a small movie but could have done much better at BO with better WOM. SRK was fine in the film, but the film was average. It opened at 32-33 cr weekend and just doubled it in its lifetime (65 cr). That is not great trending. It should have ideally done around 100 cr to be counted as a significant success.

Aamir’s SS is also a small film, but one would minimally expect it to (at least) triple its opening weekend collections in its lifetime run. And coming on Diwali, it is bound to open much better than DZ.

You’re right script sense and execution is low. But a lot of these films are pretty much RCE productions. So SRK can step in. I can only assess from this he’s running a good business but he is not a proper wing to wing film guy like Aamir.

Agree with this assessment. The reason that SRK/Saman has turned producers is to maximize their profits from ancillary rights and distribution prices, instead of just charging acting fees from other producers. This is of course true for Aamir also (he made a fortune with Dangal), but the primary motivation behind AKP is to have complete creative control over the film. Aamir is an astute actor, director and producer who brings a lot to the table when it comes to film-making as a whole.

    • Bingo! This movie business is not rocket science. Pull is there. But what use is pull if you star in poor, average, below average [whatever term] films. I think Master is dodging this question and himself showing no real teeth in his support for his favourite.

Federer comparison is so different. He still played good in last 7 years, got to finals etc but just lost to younger healthier hungrier tennis players like Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. SRK is not A game phase or even B game. It’s like he’s kept his serve but most aspects of other game have reduced. He’s Ivanesivic when he was Sampras.

There is nothing better than winning – it’s the best cure. In filmi terms it’s just starring in a solid liked film. Nothing more nothing less.

The film has still somehow maintained okay collections and though they are not at all in line with how Salman Khan films traditionally behave, it is at least bringing in some audience.

Tubelight has come and is almost gone with the film struggling to be even the biggest grosser of the first half of year if we exclude the dubbed Bahubali. The film is not a box office financial disaster like a Broken Horses, Bombay Velvet, Rock On 2 as the profits in the producers book far outweigh the loss of the distributors. The film was made for 61 crore production budget without fee of male lead Salman Khan and 22 promotion and advertising costs. But the huge problem is the expectations from the film and the prices paid by the all India distributors who will loose around 70% of their investments. The prices paid are crazy as this sort of money is a huge risk with any film and not just Tubelight. The film reminds of Mrityudaata (1997) which also fetched record prices and then lost 70% of its investment. That film was a box office disaster as there was no back up from television and digital rights at that time.

The difference between Mritydaata and Tubelight is that when Mrityudaata had released the male lead Amitabh Bachchan came back after a five year break and although the super stardom remained within the industry, the public had moved on to younger stars like Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan but here Salman Khan is the superstar of the day so something like this should just not happen with Tubelight. The director has gone wrong and how, probably like no other before. The Eid factor and star power of Salman Khan has hid the directors mess up so far but in the second week there will be no hiding place.

Just two years back Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman Khan and the same director Kabir Khan had come and if we take out Bahubali – The Conclusion (2017) which is a dubbed film and Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001) as that sort of chest pumping adrealin rush cinema is near impossible for any present filmaker, then Bajrangi Bhaijaan is actually the greatest film this century. Dangal has done more business and even footfalls have gone 20 lakh higher but these things depend on circumstances. Dangal had a three week open run and then when competition did come it was a nothing film like Ok Jaanu. Bajrangi Bhaijaan came in the second week of Bahubali – The Beginning when that film had started to work in Hindi markets and then in week three and four there was Drishyam with Ajay Devgn and Brothers with Akshay Kumar respectively. All things equal its pretty much certain that Bajrangi Bhaijaan would easily add those 20 lakh extra footfalls and more, and on equal ticket pricing the box office number also goes higher.

So basically you have give the greatest film in modern Hindi cinema and then this low of Tubelight. When there is nothing wrong with Bajrangi Bhaijaan why change the treatment of your next film so much in terms of the screenplay. The scenes written are so slow and long that the emotional impact that the film was trying to ride on is irrelevant as the audience is so bored that they are not bothered and feel for no one in the film. It is possible that the screenplay and story of Bajrangi Bhaijaan was by the writer of the Bahubali films and here the director and his team were left to their own devices and the audience got a film which had the pace of Kabul Express, New York and Phantom. These are generally non cast films especially as far as male leads are concerned so you can even get away with it sometimes but its not going to happen with Salman Khan. This same sort of think of happened to Rakesh Omprakash Mehra who made a solid Hindi motion picture with Bhaag Milha Bhaag which was far superior than any of his work prior to that but then slips back to typical foreign cinema of his previous films with Mirzya.

The industry is in a bad state as far as box office collections go and after Tubelight a a big HIT is the order of the day. But there is a silver lining with digital which is the golden egg at this moment. Amazon and Netflix have come in such a way to India that even a mega disaster like Noor is close to recovery thanks to digital. A Tubelight picks up a huge 85 crore for digital rights which is more than its budget including PA. The box office fate of Tubelight could have repercussions on that but the fact they were prepared to pay the huge amount means they believe big films can convert into large subscriptions.

Amazon and Netflix have come to India to convert the huge Indian audience into their subscribers. They are even throwing money at even web series and small films but in time they will find out this does not work in India as the larger audience which they want does not care as we have seen with television numbers of small films. Its big films that have to keep this digital story alive and for that you can’t have directors like Kabir Khan and others making such huge mistakes. This digital story has come as a life saver for the industry and to kick this in the teeth could spell doom considering the way the theatre going audience for Hindi films is going down.

Also, before Baahubali 2 phase, Tubelight was being referred as the one which will do around 350 crs and even challenge Dangal. 120. Tubelight Crashes On Wednesday
    Wednesday 29 June 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Tubelight crashed on Wednesday with a drop of 50% and even here the collections are still being aided by the post Eid factor. The normal scenario is a 30-35% drop on the day after Bassi Eid. If it was not for this post Eid factor then the collections would be even lower. The film has grossed around 5.75 crore nett on Wednesday taking its collections to nearly 99 crore nett. There will be a further drop on Thursday while things will be almost be back to normal on Friday (UP could still help) with the weekend showing every circuit at normal ratios. The first week is now set to finish below the 105 crore nett mark. The first five day collections of Tubelight are as follows.

    Friday – 20,75,00,000

    Saturday – 19,75,00,000

    Sunday – 22,25,00,000

    Monday – 18,50,00,000

    Tuesday – 11,75,00,000

    Wednesday – 5,75,00,000

    Grand Total – 98,75,00,000

The second week will bring very low collections and it could mean that the film struggles to reach the 125 crore nett mark.

“Shah Rukh Khan’s fans are kids and families, they don’t want to hear him talk about sex in his films”, Pahlaj Nihalani slams SRK over Jab Harry Met Sejal trailer

As the debate on the use of the word….ahem…. ‘intercourse’ in the trailer of Imtiaz Ali’s forthcoming Jab Harry Met Sejal rages on, the CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani makes it very clear he has nothing against love-making and sex talk in our films.

Says Mr Nihalani sarcastically, “Contrary to the perception created by women wearing lipsticks under their burqas, we do not sit at the CBFC office with scissors waiting to pounce on any film with the word ‘sex’ in it. We are aware that our society is rapidly evolving and changing and that there are many kinds of relationships happening now which were taboo earlier. We respect those changes and try to accommodate them.”

What we are looking at is a situation where a superstar with a family image in real and reel life is discussing the possibilities of having casual sex with his co-star. Shah Rukh Khan talking like that is not the same as any other actor doing the same,” opines the CBFC chief.

Nihalani takes a dig at Shah Rukh Khan’s comment about not being old enough to vote. “If Shah Rukh is too young to vote the CBFC is too old not to care about the voter. If as Shah Rukh Khan claims he is not 18 and ineligible to vote then he should not be talking about sex on screen.”

  123. When Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was being scripted, it was written from a female point of view. Many may be aware that the film is inspired by the stand taken by the 19 year old Priyanka Bharti who decided to walk out of her in-laws’ house because they did not have a toilet. Initially, the film was to have an actress who would leave the in-laws house similarly and start a campaign for the construction of toilets in households.

Considering that the script then was female-centric the makers were keen on roping in Sonakshi Sinha. However, the actress apparently had a date-clash with her other film Noor and decided to choose it over Toilet.

Post this, the makers decided to make changes in the script and modified the entire story with a male protagonist. Now, Akshay Kumar essays the role as he starts a movement in his village over construction of toilets, demanding women’s safety in a bid to get his wife back, who leaves the house because of no toilets.

Anyways, Salute is likely to be a big-budget venture if they are to showcase the journey to space. This is in Dangal space, not the most BO friendly story – but if well-made can throw big surprises all around.

    • As per Komal Nahata, Salman Khan made a profit of 180 crores . I think he has to return at least 150 crores and keep 30 crores for working on this movie. That should be more than enough earning for a movie as bad as TL.

Somehow one never understands the distributor’s modus operandi. Either they make too much money to bet so heavily on ‘stars’ and the ‘market dynamics’ or are plain stupid. In my opinion it is neither of the two but generally playing with free flowing funds / black money at disposal. Sitting on these blogs an average person can sense these things much more accurately than these so called ‘professionals’.
For major stars this is another catch 22 type situation while signing a movie and trying to live up to expectations of the trade or to break free and from the repetitive monotony.

Like Aamir, Salman should have been more forthcoming and gone for a different release strategy than usual Eid noise if the product was not turning out to be what he hoped for…..

No wonder all the prices sold were done keeping around 300 at minimum recovery. Also, it looked liked a perfect Eid entertainer as this is in the space of Bajrangi and also once they saw the final edit, the whole Khan clan loved the movie. Salman said he loved it so much that he knew this would be a great film and wanted to add his mom’s name (Salma Khan) as one of the producers. He wouldn’t have done that if he was unhappy with the final cut. Basically they went completely wrong on here and I can’t fathom how they couldn’t see the flaws. Maybe surrounded by Yes-man all around as usually is the case with SRK.

TL response somehow negates the overrated and overvalued reach of fans and fanaticism. There is a term coined these days called ‘consumer fanaticism’ – the level of involvement or interest one has in the liking of a particular person, group, trend or idea……but its reach cannot be overestimated under the garb of fan bhakti. By and large irrespective of the politics surrounding a star/ movie – a good movie is bound to work and dud will remain a dud come what may because at the end of the day there is a cost involved for the fans in consuming the product.

Since Salman gets all the credit for the success of his movies he should now share the burden of this colossal failure which in my estimation is much more damaging than just a usual failure. There were reports of fretting and rasping midway thru filming but the only thing which one can suspect is Kabir misusing his trust and may not have worked enough on the script after convincing Salman with the core idea. Salman to his own detriment is just too overworked to go thru the whole scripting. Its only midway thru filming all reports started to pop out as per link below. This movie was announced suddenly during promotions of Sultan and next one heard they started to film some portions in his bulky wrestler avatar without letting him shed the extra pounds….

“So this morning we got to hear a shocking report about Salman Khan and Kabir Khan’s sudden fallout. A leading daily quoted a source stating how the two have been facing huge differences on the sets of their upcoming film Tubelight. In fact, right now the situation is almost like Tubelight might be Salman and Kabir’s last film together. However, given that Salman and Kabir’s friendship goes back a long way and that the two have delivered not one but two major blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan is it really possible that the two are not on good terms anymore? Well, sadly it’s a yes! Also read: Salman Khan to never work with Kabir Khan after Tubelight?

Our source exclusively reveals to us how Salman and Kabir have been differing over every little creative decision on the sets of Tubelight of late. Not to mention, Salman is also co-producing Tube Light so he is acting even more particular about the smallest of scene, how it’s being shot and what should be the final cut. So will Tubelight be Salman and Kabir’s last film together? Looks like it or at least until we get to hear a peace offering story from either Salman or Kabir’s side. But the fact that this much celebrated actor-director jodi is actually parting ways due to creative differences is quite a shocker. We wonder how will the industry react to this big fall out. I mean, don’t you think it’ll change the whole box office game now? Also read: Salman Khan seems lost on Tubelight sets, is he missing Iulia Vantur?

On the work front , Salman, Kabir and Sohail Khan are currently shooting for the second schedule in Manali and the film is almost in the middle of completion. Not to forget, Chinese actress Zhu Zhu too plays a prominent role in Tubelight which is based on the 1962 Indo-China War. Now will Salman and Kabir keep their differences aside and make sure they don’t let their film suffer? Or will their fallout happen to play as a speedbreaker in this much anticipated blockbuster? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and do keep watching this space for more updates on this hot story”.

Having said that Salman should not return even a penny here. This is a business and market place. Yes he will suffer with the price with his next and that is the time risk taker will step up and make or break themselves. Worst case scenario he has his own distribution network which they used when Dabangg was not getting the price and profited big time.

Salman will pay. It’s called reputational risk. His neck is on the line one way or another. He’s a millionaire. 180 CR is peanuts for him. That’s 3 Dangal’s to put it into perspective. 1000 CR business for India distributors. They’ll lose a lot of trust. Everyone will. This one film has hurt stars beneath him, coupled with Bahubali 2 all films will feel pain and stars too eventually. Salman was perceived as an equal to Aamir; he guaranteed an initial till now – this is massive for any buyer but off BB and Sultan people expected more here. They bet on 300 CR and are getting much less. The losses impact downstream always; the film created uncertainty.

Ps. Peanuts is a proportion of income rather than just chump change. For Salman what’s difference between 150 or 180 CR ? He earns through TV, in fact this is money in his pocket unearned to many. It’s better to suck it up front than try and make it up with TZH, REMO AND DABANNG 3! Where he’ll get that money back from salary anyway.

If I know I may have screwed over 1000’s of livelihoods and I have exceptional money earnt from the very reason that caused the screwing over – damn sure I’ll be ethical enough to offer assistance and a bonus on top. As a forward thinker it’s in my interests to prolong my career for 10 years plus than worry about a sum of money that won’t change my standard of living. For a multiple millionaire gaining 5 more makes no difference. A Ferrari is now a Lamborghini or whatever. Looks you don’t get it easily. Komal said Salman made profit of 180-200 crs. So, if true he can return 150 and will still make 30 to 50 crores from Tubelight which is still okay money from a disaster money and his earning for working on that movie for a year. Like business, it was average. He can’t give his daily wages/expenses too.. he can keep 50 crores and give rest of it .

These are important decisions SRK made, I’m seriously applauding them. Because a distributor of his film knows a plan B is hypothetically there if the film doesn’t work. He will be compensated for displaying confidence and sometimes paying over the odds. This has reflected in how SRK films still command big prices. Of course the Imtiaz Ali film is just a red herring but possibly with some caution too.

Overall distributors will make money or lose money. They should be accountable for both. Don’t expect bailouts. But Tubelight on the perceived run Salman is on will be pressured especially as it’s public the table profits he has and losses distributors have. Salman owes them one now. He can sell his film short or pay up or bank on TZH to bail him out. Track record suggests 300 CR is no easy feat for big openers which drop quickly. The likelihood of a mammoth gross is unlikely. YRF will have spent huge so selling short will not be on their agenda. It leaves Salman to bare the risk or face the wrath post TZH and potentially face the risk of further embarrassment with TZH if that doesn’t go to plan.

An analogy is the financial crisis of 2008. Do banks take the big write off up front or delay. Up front, one big hit, is way better for the system if affordable. Investors have less insecurity and confidence. Whether economically this works for a bank to function I don’t know. But reputational and public risk is less. The alternative is a year on year hit for many years. Investors fret every year, uncertainty looms.

I think Salman won’t want a distributor on his back for several years reminding him of Tubelight losses. Nip it in the bud when you can. Goodwill is generated, your reputation retained albeit you have a flop film. But it’s a clean state for future films to have less toxic negotiations. It’s simple business practice and decorum.

Coming to TZH, I agree with your assessment on core recoveries Master. These Khans these days do yrf product as favor and bail him out of his rough patch and keep him in the reckoning.

For future products, Salman will need to get his priorities right. There were rumors of signing Daisy Shah as heroine for Remo’s dance movie. Now c’mon? He has suffered 2nd time in a big way for not having a proper heroine after Jai Ho. What I am afraid which brings all most of these stars down is – arrogance

The way TZH was greenlighted, signed and commenced shooting is one of the reason one shouldn’t trust TZH more than it deserves. Movies, pre production, filming etc require time and big ones have shown to stretch even for 5 years to get it right. TZH is again a product rushed in looking at vacant Christmas spot and to have another release within the same year to counter slow mo TL. If one goes by internet chatter Salman was even eyeing a Race sequel at one time to rush things up….even Raj Santoshi’s was given a go ahead prior to signing TZH but he could not come up with complete script in time…..all this information is available to press / net and can easily be accessed…..so i cannot understand how trade can be so ignorant and cry foul.

Yes as market player and risk taker one may benefit if you bet on the right horse and this could easily turn out to be a Wanted type perfect masala fare hitting the right notes but as distributors / traders of film business one should have a better insight.

    • Agree, TZH is a rushed product. Sultan was released last July and after that they announced TZH with Ali Abbas Zafar again. Within a year to come up a huge project is not possible. Even Tubelight was rushed to an extent. Kabir Khan should have more time to come with great script on Eid 2018 instead of rushing for Little Boy story idea to make a Tubelight.

Not to say TZH will not do well, it has far less expectations and even good action will ensure basic recoveries. It will have songs, locations, action etc and at worst can do 225 during Christmas vacations and solo release.

I think people started expecting too much from Salman after Bajrangi and even Sultan. Those films were complete exceptions as his movies usually don’t have this level of quality. With Aamir it’s a totally different case – for him a masala film like Dhoom 3 is an exception, whereas a Dangal is par for the course.

Aamir wil stay far, far ahead of the competition, just don’t see anyone even in the same zone. His commitment to making quality cinema is unparalleled in Indian film industry. Nobody comes close, not even Amitabh or Dilip Kumar.

Completely agree with middle paragraph. Salman with several huge grossers followed by Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan fostered a perception that he’d cracked a code, but watching Bajrangi Bhaijaan he is still Salman just the film directed effectively and writing was good. The cliche was still there but the backdrop of nationalism and patriotic theme was toxic. I wouldn’t say fluke but every so often a major star lands a script that suits the image and falls into place. To mistake this for a trend henceforth is saying Aamir’s trend would be D3. It never was. D3 felt like a comment Aamir flippantly made with regards Fanaa once. I think he was asked why do a film like this. He responded in kind what kind of film would I get where I open a door to my lover who is blind after years apart etc. These films like Ghajini, Fanaa, D3 are to keep his overall profile wide so that when he does do Dangal he can reach wide and capitalise.

Don’t agree at all, infact quite the opposite. No signs that audience is expecting quality films from Salman, in fact if it all Tubelight flopped coz it was not entertainin and not part of his routine movie. There is hardly any story and none of Salman’s tradmarks, songs, locations or leading lady. It was bound to flop. It has nothing to do with audience expecting quality. They want routine commercial movies from Salman and that’ll do well than the movies like Tubelight.
