  1. “Haha, folks reading each others comments online thinking even Ra.One was really disaster like Tubelight. Lol.

Not even 1 site anywhere called Ra.One even flop, forget disaster. It is Flop as per audience reception but imagine 115 crores in 2011 domestic (Akki films doing now) and then 225 crores worldwide. EROS made 30 crs profit from Ra.One and was HIT in every boxoffice site out there.

No wonder it won’t digest to folks who don’t understand basics.
This is most basic article came after 2 yrs of release: Others have more profit than these..
    http://www.indicine.com/movies/bollywood/was-ra-one-a-hit-or-flop/

Btw, there is a note below that article:

Note: SRK recovered a fair bit of money from all the record brand-tie up deals. We haven’t even taken that into consideration here.”

Hahahahaha, again citing ” nice cover-up” commentary by Indicine to save such a colossal failure as Ra-one is the usual resort most Shahrukh fans take to by making it as simple as if recovering the budget equals to a hit, then going by the same logic back in 2005, movie named as Mangal Pandey released & recovered its budget yet constantly being termed as flop to below-average to average by the same shameless pro Shahrukh sites, should have been an outright hit based on the mathematical wizardry(farcical) done for Ra-one to justify its verdict, but wait a minute folks as for Shahrukh the terms & conditions are bent, tweaked & twisted to give his “failures” the positive perception such as these are presented under the garb of “rational & logical justification” so as to give them the “respectability” yet failing on both count
-genuineness and credibility!! Ancillary rights are being used as some sort of theatrical revenue to offset its huge distribution losses!! Same goes for Devdas & KANK which had such flexible classifications despite just recovering their huge budgets & DCH is at most an average fare despite recovery of its budget; double standards & duplicity anyone!! Ra-one is hit yet Talaash is semi-hit despite the fact it made more money than its budget & made profits for its distributors however small they might have been. Would leave it here as list is too big 😉

  2. Its the shame that double standards are applied to different stars by the same sites/sources. Except when a movie gets blockbuster collections, there are some hidden losses for sub-distributors involved in the distribution chain. This is true for movies which are bought for XXX distribution price and recovers more or less that XXX amount from theatrical shares. This is because all-India distributors usually sells the different territorial rights to different sub-distributors at a higher price, making a table profit.

Losses are also involved when a movie does well in certain pockets (say multiplexes in metros and bigger cities) but fares poorly in the massy belts. That is why the FI yearly classifications are important, as they strictly classify Hits based on no losses in the distribution chain. By this parameter none of SRK’s so-called Hits after RNBDJ (2008) are actually clean hits except for CE. This is also true for Aamir’s semi-hits like DCH/Talaash or his average movies like MP/DG.

Ra One, for one incurred heavy losses at sub-distributor level, just like there were losses involved for the Raees. SRK fans usually go with the soft classifications of BOI. I personally have no problem with that, except for the double standards they apply for Aamir’s under-performers. SRK has so-called ‘hits in Ra One, Don2, MNIK, JTHJ, etc … But MP is supposedly a flop (previously they had it as Average), DCH/DG is Average and so on …

  3. TL did only 4 cr on Thursday, and the week 1 total is around 105 cr. Thats the same range as Raees. Remains to be seen if it can add another 20-25 cr to get to Raees total of 130 cr.

Not a chance – 10 CR + 2nd week will be Blockbuster performance at this rate! Must be the biggest loss of screens in week 2 (some 3000 probably according to some sites) in the history of Indian cinema. Once one factors the screen loss, reduced ticket prices aside from WOM, the 106-107 CR odd likely official numbers are fighting hard for even 120 CR. Keep recalibrating down every day friend.

This is the worst century in history of Indian cinema. It’s 100% not convincing as I said day 1! ‘Real’ value’ BOI article should say without festivities, Tubelight is less than Fan probably 75-80 CR maximum. First it needs to get past JLLB2 and BKD before thinking of Raees.

      • LOL Agree that 2nd week may be well under 10 cr! What a disaster this is.

We have 4 big movies coming out in the next 2-3 months – JJ, JHMS, TEPK & Badshaho. Hopefully we will get a couple of hits. Problem is that none of these are looking like blockbuster material.

  4. Has anyone noticed that nothing seems to be working in Bollywood post-Baahubali 2? Only Hindi Medium has worked to an extent and it is a good film. It will be a good thing if Baahubali has raised the standard expected of movies. It will be a good thing if people accept only better quality films and if crap movies don’t work anymore.

I remember Tubelight’s trailer being released when Baahubali was creating havoc and TL’s trailer was just looking ridiculous compared to the cinematic experience offered by Baahubali 2 back then.

Noticed? I said it would happen. BB2 has changed everything. Every new film idea, every film in pre production, every film that is not so far down production that it can ‘change’ is HUGELY affected, only films that are devastated are those ready for release or too far down the path of releasing to change anything. Thugs was on hold for 2 months, 2.0 shifted out.

TEPK and JHMS unaffected only hypothetically as they are post BB2 era releases so they’ll be judged from a different prism box office wise but aesthetics and pure film critic they are same as before or after BB2. They are pure stories no technology.

Hindi Medium works in any year 2016 or 2017. I’m guessing it’s a nice little movie wanted to watch it but ended up watching some rubbish Hollywood film!

I think BB2 articulated that the audience want exciting films but also very rooted films. I’d be interested to see how a Dangal would fair today, I suspect in India it would fair less better.

        Salute hits the ‘exciting’ mark.

      • Yes, this competition stuff is another farce just like holidays as proved by Baahubali the conclusion in India & Dangal in China where it had to face biggest of franchies & establishd brands week after week, yet both of them have dispelled & dusted the exaggerated notion of both factors as “indispensable” enablers in order to achieve the milestones. Good word of mouth is the “be all & end all” barring few exceptions to set records & to get to reach to the maximum potential possible for the film of any superstar or actor, BB for Salman, CE for Shahrukh, RR for Akshay Kumar, Hindi Medium & Piku for Irrfan, Pink & Piku for Amitabh Bachchan, Ram Leela & BM for Ranveer, YJHD & Barfi for Ranbir, JA & ZNMD for Hrithik, Bol Bachchan & Singham for Ajay, Queen & TWMR for Kangana, BM & YJHD for Deepika, PK & RNBDJ for Anushka & numerous other movies being the shining testimonies of word of mouth’s immense power. Yet BOI & their ilks have been busy selling “Salman- aura of the invincible” propaganda at the cost of overlooking & neglecting & even mocking the potential of good content.

But then again its all ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’.

          • China market is too dynamic. Dangal’s finished par the course. Competition only hurted it on Friday of new releases, maybe Saturday. But generally, China and it’s structure seems to be able to adjust screen coverage daily. So a good WOM film won’t lose out too much, it rewards good performing films.

I haven’t seen a system like this, it’s helped Dangal maximise as much. Obviously it’s been hit by some huge films from start but the last week shows its going out with a bang and exhibitors are supporting it to do so.

  7. BREAKING: I & B Minister, censor chief, Madhur Bhandarkar get restraining notice from Sanjay Gandhi’s alleged daughter

BREAKING I & B Minister, censor chief, Madhur Bhandarkar get restraining notice from Sanjay Gandhi’s alleged daughter

Startling and shocking as it may sound, a lady claiming to be slain Congress politician and youth leader Sanjay Gandhi’s daughter has sent a legal notice to the director Madhur Bhandarkar, the Minister Of Information & Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu, the chairperson of the CBFC Pahlaj Nihalani and producer Bharat Shah to stop the CBFC from certifying Bhandarkar’s political film Indu Sarkar from release.

The film, as we all know by now, recreates the events during the dreaded Emergency that was clamped on Indian democracy in 1977.

The lady Priya Singh Paul claiming to be Sanjay Gandhi’s “daughter” in her 4-page legal notice dated June 23, states that she has come to know that her “father” Sanjay Gandhi and her grandmother Indira Gandhi played by Neil Nitin Mukesh and Supriya Vinod, are shown in roles “without accurate or with sufficient historical data” and may be shown in “poor light”. The legal notice goes on to say that the release of the film should be stopped until Ms Priya Singh Paul is shown the film and approved by her.

The recipients of this startling legal notice have been given a week to respond. While Madhur Bhandarkar refused to comment, CBFC Chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani expresses bafflement over the content of the legal notice. “We had no idea Shri Sanjay Gandhi had another child besides Varun Gandhi. The notice says Ms Priya Paul Singh is Shri Sanjay Gandhi’s ‘biological child’. It further says that this matter has come to light recently. We are not sure the Gandhi parivar is aware of this new family member. But unless the family acknowledges Ms Singh’s claims, we can’t act on her objections to Indu Sarkar.”

    Wimbledon odds;

Federer is favourite, Murray 2nd, Nadal 3rd, Djokovic 4th, Raonic 5th & Cilic 6th. Seedings peg potential semi final of Murray vs. Nadal & Federer vs. Djokovic. Quite remarkable how things change in 12 months. I’d predict Djokovic not to reach final 4. Fancy Murray to beat Nadal. If Federer breezes through (expect this as he is fresh and in form), he can win this. The odds probably favour Federer as he’s got a good draw avoiding Nadal & Murray till a final, suspect whoever had Djokovic was favourite.

Isn’t filmmaking a speculative business and by law of averages shouldn’t these distributors suffer a loss on a Salman movie if they have made tons before by betting on him.

There is still scarcity of saleable name in bollywood and Salman’s stardom has sufficient equity to survive this backlash. We live in a country which suffers from ‘ek anaar aur sau bimaar’ syndrome. There are people loaded with money and willing to distribute movies by the dozen and people connected with him will still make tons of money.

This attitude was on ample display when the very same distributors declined his bid for Dabangg. Confidence in content made him counter that by using his own distribution network and rest they say is history….. Distributors are not novices & wouldn’t they be able to read between the lines that if hefty sums are demanded upfront, it is a clear sign makers have little faith in letting the film do the talking and want to pass on the risk to someone else.

No film is foolproof and unless a film has the right connect it won’t work. I really hopes he leaves behind the acting roles and sticks to the Dabangg type roles. Salman Khan is best when he is Salman Khan on screen. Even in Bajrangi Bhaijaan there were shades of Salman Khan in the character. I don’t think Salman Khan, unlike his contemporaries, is capable of experimenting, his acting range doesn’t allow it.

    UPDATED : Saturday, 1 Jul 2017, 6:30PM

President Xi Jinping recently told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he watched the Bollywood film, Dangal, and liked it. Their conversation took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, on June 9.

Apart from Titanic, a Hollywood blockbuster of the 1990s, few foreign films have been bestowed such glory in China as Dangal. In 1998, Titanic became such a massive hit that then-Chinese leader Jiang Zemin recommended the entire Communist Party Politburo watch it. At that point, few Chinese expected a Bollywood movie would rock the whole nation 20 years later. For the rest follow the link:

  31. Salman Khan’s Tubelight is a colossal failure

1 day ago by Indicine Team

Salman Khan’s Tubelight is a colossal failure at the box office. The film that has been rejected by the superstar’s fans, as well as the normal movie going audience.

Box office performance wise, ‘Tubelight’ is the biggest disappointment for Salman since his staggering rise to the top of the industry after 2010’s Dabangg. It’s also his first failure after Eid became a festival for film releases in the country.

The film was below-the-mark right from the first day at the box office, but there was hope that it would grow with the beginning of the Eid festivities on Monday. The growth did not come, but with Eid celebration coming to an end on Tuesday, the crash did. ‘Tubelight’ tanked at the box office Wednesday onwards and the slide will continue in the second weekend too.

Shows were reduced at multiplexes on Wednesday itself due to lack of audience. The occupancy for the morning and noon shows at several centres was lower than what ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was getting in its 3rd week.

While the producers of the film have made their profits by selling various rights of the film, ‘Tubelight’ is a major disaster for the distributors. The film fetched insanely high amounts as ‘minimum guarantee’ and most haven’t yet recovered even half of their investment. The trend of paying fancy prices for the star-value, without factoring-in the reach, concept or box office potential of the film itself, has cost the industry a lot of money.

It’ll be the case in the near future too, as we have films lined up for release that have fetched high prices because of the star, but the content and concept isn’t justifying the price.

    Tubelight Collections Growth / Drop
    Day 1 (Friday) 21.15 crore –
    Day 2 (Saturday) 21.17 crore – 1%
    Day 3 (Sunday) 22.45 crore + 6%
    Day 4 (Monday) 19.09 crore – 15%
    Day 5 (Tuesday) 12.00 crore – 37%
    Day 6 (Wednesday) 6.50 crore – 46%
    Day 7 (Thursday) 4.50 crore – 31%

A 2000 crore club isn’t enough, as Aamir Khan’s Dangal seems to heading towards a bigger record than that!

According to Forbes report, this Aamir Khan film released in China 8 weeks back in more than 5000 screens on day one and earned $2.2 million on first day itself. Now with over $190 million in box office revenue, Dangal has become the fourth highest total for a movie in China after Fate of the Furious, Kug Fu Yoga and Journey to the West: Demon Chapter…a record which no other Indian film has achieved so far. And now 8 weeks later, Dangal box office domination at Chinese box office refuses to slow down. Hollywood’s latest release, Transformer: The Last Knight grabbed maximum theatres in China and Dangal was left with just 2900 showtimes a day. But Transformers failed to create a mark, and as a result theatre owners have started giving back more screens to the longest running sports drama. By Wedensday, Dangal showtimes had more than doubled screens making $300,000 revenue in that day.

This is simply not the kind of film, or the way to sell experiments at huge prices.

    • Too many LOLs here. K3G as top movie selection in last 20 yrs for Big B??? Lol. Also, Great Gatsby can be considered Big B’s movie by just being part of a scene whereas Srk is non-existent in K3G. Similarly, Ash is selected for Devdas and Jodha Akbar and again SRK is non-existent in Devdas? So by Academy’s own logic of selection – they have K3G and Devdas right infront of their eyes with SRK part of those movies. Don’t even need to bring CDI or Swades or MNIK or Paheli or whatever.

Aishwarya is a regular in Cannes and has Hollywood links, poor ones albeit but she is a global Indian female icon for many. Big B was first choice from India for Madame Tussauds and was BBC’S #1 actor for last millennium. His Indian box office achievements are known and he is respected globally. Irfan stars in Hollywood films. Aamir has Oscar nomination and has most recent biggest successes in US. Those choices are obvious.

Deepika, Priyanka have not cracked Hollywood but latters done well on TV with Quantico. Salman I would not pick before SRK. SRK not being nominated is plain wrong compared to these 3 being chosen.

  44. Box Office: Tubelight doesn’t shine, is counting days before it goes dark
    By Joginder Tuteja

    #Tubelight

The second weekend of Tubelight is through and the collections so far have not shown any sign of improvement. The film couldn’t leverage from an open stage either and that has resulted in the 10 day total of just Rs. 116 crore*. This is very poor as at the bare minimum one had expected this to be the number that would have come in after the four day extended Eid weekend!

In the process, the film has now collected in the same range as the lifetime of Jolly LLB 2 [Rs. 117 crore] and Badrinath Ki Dulhania [Rs. 116.86 crore]. However, this doesn’t say much because while the Akshay Kumar starrer (excluding the superstar’s fee) was made at less than 25% budget of Tubelight, the Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt film was less than 50% cost (all inclusive). Still, these two films emerged as clean hits whereas Tubelight has lost around 50% of the investment that many distributors had made.

The numbers would just about trickle in for rest of the week and one sees only around Rs. 6-7 crore more getting added to the overall total this week. As things stand today, the lifetime total would be around Rs. 130 crore mark and that’s about it.

    Flop!

As for last Friday release Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha, the film has emerged as a theatrical disaster as the collections couldn’t even go past the 1 crore mark.

  45. Here’s why Priyanka doesn’t want to team up with Abhishek for ‘Gustakhiyan’
Sakshma Srivastav | Updated: Jul 3, 2017, 10.14 AM IST

Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are still on the lookout for the male lead in their next production ‘Gustakhiyan’, which brings the story of the Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi and poet-novelist Amrita Pritam to life on celluloid. While PeeCee will be portraying Amrita, Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan had been approached to play Sahir but for various reasons, nothing could materialise.

As per recent reports, the makers then initiated talks with Abhishek Bachchan for the same but it seems like PeeCee isn’t very happy with the choice. A source close to the development revealed, “Priyanka wants an actor who hasn’t done a period film before. Abhishek has done ‘Umrao Jaan’ (2006) with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Since PeeCee is co-producing the film with Bhansali, she expressed her reservations to SLB and they are still on the lookout for someone to play the character of Sahir.”

While the movie was to go on floors this month, it got delayed as Priyanka signed two big Hollywood films — ‘A Kid Like Jake’ and a romcom starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth and Adam DeVine. Along with this, she has to shoot for the third season of her American television show ‘Quantico’, so the actress has her hand full right now and ‘Gustakhiyan’ will kick start next year.

  46. Current Star Ranking:

No 1: Aamir Khan – With Tubelight’s failure Aamir is now undisputed king of Bollywood. In a race it’s not just about how you perform but also how others perform. For the first time in his career, Aamir find the next competition giving a massive flop. This at a time when Aamir delivered big time cements his position.

No 2: Salman Khan – The pressure to deliver and do things differently catches up with him. However unlike SRK his next lineups looks great and he should be back. Sometimes a flop helps a superstar to galvanise his fan base. Good news for Tiger Zinda Hai. If TZH is as good as Sultan, all records will be broken (barring Baahubali 2)

No 3: Shahrukh Khan – All eyes of When Harry Met Sejal. The promos are looking a bit different but has SRK at his charming best and after a long time we will see a star Hero and a star Heroine movie. Last such outing was Sultan.

No 4: Akshay Kumar – Baby, Special 26, Gabbar is back, Holiday, Airlift, Housefull3, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2 all in last 4 years. Akshay has now built his prestige tag and is delivering string of hits making both the media and public cheering for him now at the level of Khans. The narrative around him is changing. All eyes on TEPK.

No 5: Ranbir Kapoor – All eyes on Jagga Jasoon.

Tubelight had a huge drop in collections in its second weekend as it grossed 7.50 crore nett and took its ten day business to 110 crore nett. The film has fared poorly across the board with cities in UP being the best but that is just comparatively with rest of India. The collections are still very low.

The film will probably be out most theatres in two weeks and is likely to stay short of the 120 crore nett mark with final business probably falling in the 115-116 crore nett range which is just a little higher than Badrinath Ki Dulhania and well short of Raees which was an under performer. The daily collections of Tubelight till date are as follows.

    Week One – 1,02,57,00,000

    Friday – 2,00,00,000

    Saturday – 2,50,00,000

    Sunday – 3,00,00,000 apprx

“Working on that film has been an amazing experience because of Rajkumar Hirani, Ranbir Kapoor,” said Paresh Rawal.

    July 3, 2017

Actor Paresh Rawal, who will be seen portraying the role of the late Sunil Dutt in the yet-untitled Sanjay Dutt biopic, says it was a gratifying experience.

“Working on that film has been an amazing experience because of Rajkumar Hirani, Ranbir Kapoor and the writing of Abhijat Joshi. I feel Sunil Dutt saab was very human and he never had any vibes of stardom, so it has been gratifying experience playing him on screen,” Paresh said in an interview here.

“It is mainly the story of a father and son, and working with Ranbir (who plays Sanjay) has been especially a great experience because he is a brilliant actor, very terrific and a unique talent,” he added.

Paresh, who is also a BJP MP, says he has never chosen his film projects on the basis of any particular genre.

“A role which is well written, challenging and scares me to attempt that, I always want to do such kind of roles,” he added.

Asked about comparison between senior actors like the three Khans of Bollywood and the younger generation, he said: “I feel comparison between these two generations is not correct because everyone has come in this industry with their X-factor. Salman Khan has his own charm and charisma and so does Shah Rukh, but Aamir is something different.

“Aamir doesn’t rely on charm or anything. He is a total package and I feel now Aamir has earned more goodwill than Tata and Birla. People come to watch his films as they know it will be good. His many years of continuous hard work has enabled him to earn that kind of goodwill among people.

“On the other hand, Varun Dhawan and Ranbir have just started and they are capable… If they will get good material to act in, I feel they will prove themselves.”

    Dangal – 73.7 crore
    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 56.1 crore
    Sultan – 34.07 crore
Badrinath Ki Dulhania – 17.56 crore
    Hindi Medium – 12.14 crore
    Tubelight – 8 crore (approx)

The above comparison sums up the disastrous trend of ‘Tubelight’, as the second weekend collections is less than 10% of ‘Bahubali 2 (Hindi)’ and half of ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ which was a much smaller film.

The second weekend business of ‘Sultan’ wasn’t excellent last year, the trend wasn’t even close to as good as ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, yet in comparison to the latest Salman Khan Eid release, ‘Sultan’ business was on a different level altogether.

‘Tubelight’ has collected around 115 crore in its first 10 days. It’ll finish with lifetime business in the 120 crore net range, which is just a little better than Jai Ho – the only other under-performing Salman Khan film in the last 7 years.

  55. Tubelight At 200 Crore Worldwide After Ten Days
    Monday 03 July 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Tubelight has made it to the 200 crore worldwide mark in ten days as it has India GROSS of 152 crore and $7.4 million (48 crore) in Overseas but this is a total the film should have done in four days an not ten days. The last time a Salman Khan film under performed it was Jai Ho which did 186 crore worldwide but that was in 2014 and it was not an Eid release. Tubelight is looking at a a close of 210-215 crore worldwide which would make it 31 films above 200 crore worldwide. But when a film like Bahubali – The conclusion is doing a record 800 crore worldwide in just the Hindi language then 200 is nothing for a big star film.

The worldwide business of Tubelight will be in the same range as films like Airlift (2016), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Rustom (2016) and Singham Returns (2014). It will fall short of all Salman Khan eid releases since Wanted which was 93 cr worldwide but at that time Salman Khan did not have an image of a macho action star which came post Dabangg in 2010.

Its a coincidence that its this image which is probably one of the reasons for the downfall of Tubelight. This was not the only reason for the failure of the film but if an actor without a strong image was in the film then it may not have crashed the way it has as the audience may have found it easier to identify with the character.

DNA WEB TEAM | Mon, 3 Jul 2017-05:36pm , DNA webdesk

Here’s the clarification by the spokesperson…

Contrary to rumours of Aamir Khan starer Dangal having crossed the Rs 2000 crore mark worldwide, the spokesperson clarifies that the film is yet to reach the milestone. After its release in China, Dangal created history with its record shattering run at the box office. The film has emerged to be Bollywood’s biggest blockbuster till date.

The spokesperson says, “We have been reading a lot of reports saying that Dangal has crossed Rs 2000 crore worldwide. Just to set the record straight, we want to clarify that Dangal’s official worldwide gross collection figure as of Thursday is Rs 1864 crore.”

“We are very happy that our film has been so successful, and what is of most value for Aamir Khan and the entire team of Dangal is the immense love the film has got from the audience across the globe. We are looking forward for the film to release in other untapped territories to reach more audience,” added the spokesperson.

Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, released on December 23, 2016 and is a biopic on the life of Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, who he trained to be world-class wrestlers. The film stars Aamir Khan along with Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar and Aparshakti Khurana.

  58. Dangal total collection hasn’t reached Rs 2000 cr: Aamir Khan’s spokesperson

The box-office figures doing the rounds are fake, Aamir Khan’s spokesperson clarified.

It was a moment to celebrate, not only for Aamir Khan fans but also Indians, when Dangal became the first Indian film to cross the Rs 2000-crore mark worldwide. However, Aamir’s spokesperson has revealed that the figures, first published by Forbes magazine, are fake, and that the wrestling drama has not yet reached the milestone.
The spokesperson said, “We have been reading a lot of reports saying that Dangal has crossed Rs 2000 crore worldwide. Just to set the record straight, we want to clarify that Dangal’s official worldwide gross collection figure as of Thursday is Rs 1864 crore.”

Reports were also doing the rounds that the Nitesh Tiwari film has become the fifth highest-grossing non-English film in cinematic history.
Dangal revolves around wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, played by Aamir Khan, and his journey to train his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become world-class wrestling champions.

    • Aamir surely has a very poor spokesperson. The discrepancy is because they are considering the China gross without ticketing fees. The ticketing fees does not go to the distributor, but Hollywood Studios usually add the ticketing fees to the gross.

AKP probably is taking into account the China gross without ticketing fees (if they are taking the figures from their distributor E Stars).

Aamir’s spokesperson should be fired for giving out such incomplete information, its a faux pas!

Hollywood I believe reports on these figures. Whether or not it makes sense is another discussion. 2000 CR is crossed if the Hollywood application is used. If the spokesman or AKP do it differently fine – those are the official figures from producer (maybe there is lack of knowledge or a difference of opinion).

Either way 1850, 1900 or 2000 don’t change anything. It’s the biggest grosser WW and doesn’t seem like BB2 is closing that gap with initial Taiwan response.

It’s irony that China collections are being disputed, Indian box office figures are way more dubious period. China maybe is consistent but this including tickets fees is uniformly consistent. India has an inconsistency and dubious reporting on top. It’s obvious which is better. It’s obvious where the questions need to be asked.

China has 1 issue – ticketing fees being blown out way more in proportion to the X number of issues in India! AKP may just be taking a moral route, they are fine to do it. It means every Hollywood figure from China is disputable, just like every figure from India! But at least with China the difference is transparent.

            Like

          • @Jay – Agree on all counts.

But I think AKP is quoting the China gross without ticketing fees due to business route rather than moral route. The producer cut is determined as a % of the gross without ticketing fees. May be that is why AKP is quoting that figure.

            Like

          • Jay, I dont think the discrepancy is due to net and gross…The 2000 figure is WW gross and includes India gross and not net. So when AKP is saying it is 1864 they mean 1864 WW gross so chances are that they are removing the ticketing fees as what Marcus said. That seems the more likelier possibility though close to 200 cr of ticketing fees for 1000 cr gross in China seems too high, but I dont know the China market enough to comment

Read the Robert Cain response. It’s a kind of nett of ticket fees. But everyone outside of India is not following the practice.

I didn’t mean nett in terms of tax. I meant net of fees.

Ultimately gross WW is over 2000 CR – there is a YouTube on this but I haven’t watched it yet to post it.

          • As Marcus says, it maybe a business decision to avoid taxation on amount not coming to AKP.

In that case, they should have set it right when there was so much noise about 2000 crore! Maybe the reality dawned on them when their CA’s warned them.

All this makes the people fans and non fans angry for being taken for a merry ride!

As Jay says, going by Hollywood’s way of reporting Dangal has crossed 2000 cr gross WW.

          • I doubt its a taxation reason based on CA’s suggestion. Its not that AKP is getting all that Chinese money. They were at max getting 25% of it and at worst some 10% of it, based on varying reports..The bulk of the money is anyways with the China buyer. Anyways we will get some clarification later from AK…

Until & unless Aamir gives his nod to make anything public with regards to AKP, it’s next to impossible for Aamir’s spokesperson to make such a massive announcement & your hypothesis that Aamir himself is ignorant & oblivious to the technicalities of China’s box office is too presumptuous!!

Ravi Shastri Is The Frontrunner To Be Team India Coach, Says Sunil Gavaskar Updated: 03 July 2017 20:05 IST

The cricket legend feels Ravi Shastri is the favourite for the high-profile job.

”Ravi Shastri is the frontrunner to be the next Team India coach feels cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. Shastri, the India team director from 2014-16, formally applied for the head coach post on Monday after Sachin Tendulkar requested him to. “Ravi (Shastri) actually was the one where the turnaround actually started for the Indian cricket team back in 2014. After India lost in England, the BCCI asked him to come in as a team director… suddenly there was a change in the team’s fortunes over a period of time. Now that he’s applied, he’s probably the man who is going to get the job,” Gavaskar told NDTV.
According to NDTV sources, the Indian team wants Shastri to return which makes him the favourite for the job.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will hold the interviews for the job on July 10 in Mumbai. The members of the CAC are Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. The deadline for applications is July 9. Apart from Shastri, some of the other applicants are Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh.”

You have 3 people here plus Dravid leading under 19’s & India A who were the backbone of Indian cricket for years given advisory roles where a board can override it. What’s the point in having this experience here and not on the training field instead.

Mayank Shekhar: Did the cell phone kill the movie star?

    http://www.mid-day.com/articles/mayank-shekhar-did-the-cell-phone-kill-the-movie-star/18372179

“…..What’s the equivalent of India’s Rs 100-crore box office club in the US? The billion-dollar, or Rs 6,500 crore club! This is to give you a relative sense of scale between two film industries that, besides Hong Kong, are the only ones with a traditional star system. Yet, of the 10 movie stars who make it to the list of 100 highest earning celebs, between June 1, 2016, to 2017, before tax and management fee, three are Indians – Shah Rukh Khan (#65, $38 million), Salman Khan (#71, $37 million), and Akshay Kumar (#80, $35.5 million).
Surely, like the No. 1, Diddy, much of whose earnings come from his clothing line and partnership with Ciroc vodka, Indian superstars make enough from outside cinema – endorsement deals, sports teams, or privately owned companies. But all of it still depends on their supposed star power. Which is their inherent ability to assure bums on cinema seats. Like with any other business, these one-man industries are also judged on their year-on-year growth in box office revenues.

Did the cell phone, net, piracy, and TV hit footfalls in theatres? Hugely. Could SRK, the king of romance, for instance, expand his empire merely banking on a captive audience built over two-and-a-half decades? Earlier, yes. Now, no. Starting 2011 or so, you watch him attempt everything he can to bring newer, younger, and older cell phone audiences into theatres – superhero (Ra.One), comedy (Chennai Express), masala (Happy New Year), obsession-drama (Fan), mafia (Raees)… Akshay isn’t an action-comic star anymore. He does mostly sane, upper-mid-class pics! Each movie looks enticingly different, and he clocks at least four a year.

Perhaps the turning point for Salman – the last man standing – is when he showed up on the first day of Dabangg’s shoot with a moustache on. He’d flatly refused until that day. Bhai fans are equally befuddled when, instead of simply playing his macho self – what essentially made star-driven movies, critic-script-audience proof – he cries copiously on screen in Tubelight. What Salman wants to know, as he said in a recent interview, is if the audience is laughing at him. He’s glad to report that they’re not. It’s a big risk. The penny must drop. And it will keep getting tougher. If anything, the younger actors are having a harder time breaking into mythological stardom.

Does this inevitable tinkering to get people to genuinely look forward to a film on the big screen (since stars are everywhere, from TV to Twitter, anyway) affect the top entertainers’ fame at the ground-level? Obviously not. That’s not what this is about. Fame, or familiarity, unlike stardom, flows naturally from screen. It’s cheap, democratic, and the size doesn’t matter – even a viral video on YouTube will do. But it doesn’t get you into the Forbes’ list.

I remember someone telling me about a minor actor getting mobbed in a small-town. The actor came across a crazy fan who kept gawking at him, unsure why the quasi-celeb couldn’t recognise him: “I just saw you yesterday on the screen,” said the fan. The actor agreed, “Yeah, you could see me. But I couldn’t. You need to know that.”

  64. Did Salman have a premonition about Tubelight’s failure?
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Jul 4, 2017 – 10:27 am IST

Now that Tubelight has turned out to be one of Salman Khan’s lowest Eid earners, the back-and-forth of accusations and counter-accusations has begun, though not in a public way.

A close friend of Salman Khan reveals that the superstar was “on shaky grounds” about the film.

“He wasn’t too keen in doing this film with Kabir. There was another script that Kabir had wanted to do with Salman. But Salman felt it required too much physical effort to go into the other project. So he picked this one just because it was physically less strenuous

than Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai,” says the knowledgeable friend.

Also, Salman Khan insisted on doing the bhola-bhala act again after Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

“Salman wanted to build on the image of the innocent do-gooder who helps bring people together. That image really worked for him in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Tubelight was like the third part of Salman’s trilogy of innocence.”

In the pursuit of playing the pure hearted, Salman went too far in Tubelight. After seeing the end-product, he apparently turned around and said to his director Kabir Khan, ‘Yeh thoda zyada ho gaya.’

Kabir, in fact, is now going to face the brunt of the blame game. At the moment, the director has gone into hiding to avoid the uncomfortable questions.

Tubelight grossed 1.25 crore nett on its second Monday and took its total to 111.50 crore nett apprx. The film is likely to end the first week at 12-12.50 crore nett which is the worst second week number for a Salman Khan film since Veer in 2011.

The film continues to outperform in UP where the second week collections would be decent if it was a normal film. The film has performed very poorly in Gujarat, Nizam / Andhra, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan and Bihar and these areas tend to show strong numbers for Salman Khan films especially on Eid. “Aamir Khan has a bigger goodwill than Tata, Birla”- Paresh Rawal
    By Faridoon ShahryarJul 4, 2017 – 11:01 am IST

Paresh Rawal is one of the finest actors that we have today. In a chat with a group of journalists recently, Paresh Rawal spoke about a host of things. Bollywood Hungama’s Faridoon Shahryar was part of this group of journalists. Here are a few excerpts from the conversation where Rawal spoke about his next film Guest iin London, his biopic of Narendra Modi, is he repentant of his tweet on Arundhati Roy? What ails our film industry and why he feels that Aamir Khan carries a bigger credibility than Tata or Birla today.

Atithi tum kab jaoge was a hilarious film. But, to come up with that timing, you need to have a competent actor in front of you as well, which you had in Ajay Devgn. Even Konkona, I think, she was outstanding. The domestic help was very funny. Do you think that you are missing that in Guest of London? Ajay is on a different level altogether, he’s a very giving actor.
I never missed Konkona or Ajay in this. Because, yeh kahaani poori alag hai. Kartik is equally competent. He’s a very good actor. Kriti too, is a very fine actress. I am saying it with a lot of responsibility that both of them are very competent.

As an actor, you have done all kinds of roles. Be it serious or comedy, some biopics like Sardar Patel. Which genre excites you more?
Not a genre, but a role which excites me more is a role which is well written and challenges me as an actor. It should kind of scare me whether I should do this or not and that fright only kind of motivates me.

Now, you are doing a film on Narendra Modi. Can you tell us something about it?
We are in the process of locking the script. Three fourth is already done. We will be starting sometime in March April 2018.

There was a buzz that Akshay Kumar is playing Mr. Modi…
Jisko karna hai…kare bhai. Accha hai!

Which of your roles have been most challenging so far?
Sir, Sardar, Tamanna, Road to Sangam, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye…yeh sab challenging the, aur Baburao bhi.

How are you preparing to play Mr. Modi?
It’s not as if I am meeting him day in and day out. Preparation is done when you detach yourself. You don’t prepare by looking at the person all the time.

Do you think it will be difficult to play Mr. Modi considering the sort of political atmosphere which is there in the country today?
Political climate around him was always volatile ever since he came into politics. This political atmosphere has been created. People were standing on the roads during demonetization. But still, they didn’t do any rioting. People were not complaining but it was the political parties who were complaining since their money had turned into paper.

Who do u want from the industry to play Amit Shah considering that Mr. Shah is extremely close to Mr. Modi?
Utna nahi hai jitna aapko lagta hai unke beech me. Modi saab hamesha akele rahe hai… always alone. He never believes in loose talk. Agar aapse kaam nahi hai, toh woh chale jayenge. He will always be alone.

The response that he has is very polarizing. People are either his fan or people are totally against him. So, when you attempt a biopic and when you attempt a role, do you also fear skepticism?
Why should I worry about that? I have to look at how he handled various situations.

Will the 2002 riots be touched upon in the biopic?
Everything will be there. Jo notion hai logon ka, above judiciary jo hoke ghoom rahe hai unke notion ko bhi tackle kiya jayga.

    What about GST?
GST toh mai khud abhi tak samjha nahi paaya. Long run ke andar accha hi hoga, and it will simplify things. Jaise teething problem hota hai, chashme ka number change ho gaya, aisa thode din ke liye problem hoga.

Sir, the Tamil Nadu film industry has gone on strike as there is a 30% municipal tax in addition to GST, which makes it huge.
Local body tax ka pata nahi yaar. I am an inadequate person. Maine pehle bhi bataya ki hum log, you and me tax ke baare me kitna jaante hai ki CA ne bola itna bharo, thoda income tax officer ko puchenge kuch kam ho sakta hai, nahi hota hai toh bolte hai thik hai bhardo. Hum utna hi jaante hain.

From the film industry perspective, earlier regional cinema was exempt from taxes.
I met Sidharth Roy Kapur and discussed that such and such thing is going to happen and it will affect the film industry badly. Anyways, we are grappling with piracy. Now people can watch movies on their phones itself and data rates have crashed.

In south industry. Piracy is very controlled.
Because they are united! Corporates couldn’t penetrate in the South film industry. Their unity is a big thing. We don’t have a unified voice. I told Siddharth Roy Kapur that we must have a unified federation but it’s highly unlikely.

Sir, you played an amazing character in Oh My God! You played a rationalist. How much of a rationalist are you in real life?
    100 percent.

Sir, there is so much of hate in the name of religion today. How sad do u think it is?
Pathetic!! Yeh sab tab hota hai jab hum society ko mandir nahi maante. Logon ko bhagwan nahi maante tab jaake yeh hota hai. Aap society ko mandir maano, logon ko bhagwaan mano, koi problem nahi hai.

Sir, lekin aise logon ko Mahatma Gandhi ka hawala dena, jo bachpan se hi nafrat ki ghuthi peete aaye hai, kya Mahatma Gandhi ka hawala deke kya yeh ruk jayga, kya karna kya chaiye?
Kya karoge iiske andar, nafrat ke andar kya karoge aap? Humko toh bachpan se Geeta, Mahabharat, Ramayan acchi acchi baatein padhai jaati hai toh phir bhi hum kyu karte hai? Hum kaha sudhre hai? Din ba din bigadte hi jaa rahe hai. Toh us kahaaniyon ka kuch assar hi nahi hai. Mane vo bahgwan ho, Khuda ho us cheez ka kuch assar hi nahi hai. Humein jo karna hai vo hum kar hi rahe hai

Kashmir me Pandit ko lynch kiya gaya. Pehalu khan hai, Junaid.
Chahe koi bhi ho, marta toh aadmi hi haina. Severe kanoon laana chaiye aur saath me kanoon laane se kaam nahi hoga, judiciary ko bhi fast implement karna chaiye.

Sir, can we see you as the Chief Minister of Gujarat sir?
    (Laughs loudly).

Sir, you said that you consider Naseeruddin Shah as one of your idols and within the industry when you have people who have different political viewpoints be it Aamir or Naseer saab has certain viewpoints. How do you deal with that because you have worked with them in close quarters?
You respect that, agar Aamir kuch kehta hai, agar Shah Rukh kuch kehta hai, toh respect toh karta hu main. I might disagree. But, baat wahan tak hi pahunchti hai. Aur kitne aage leke jaoge, because they are also well meaning, woh bhi jo bolte hai woh desh ke bhale ke liye hi bolte hai, unka tareeka mere hisaab se alag hai, mera tareeka unke hisaab se alag hai, but baat dono desh ke bhale ke liye hi karte hain.

You said that Pakistani TV shows are better than ours. But, if this statement was made by Aamir or Shah Rukh, they would have been asked to go to Pakistan.
Mere par bhi toot pade the na yaar, meri bhi bahot dhajjiyan udayi thi. I said this in 2014 as well that I like Pakistani TV shows. If I say that Imran Khan is a good cricketer, then does that make Sunil Gavaskar a bad cricketer?

But sir, today if you even praise a Pakistani player then one becomes an anti-national!
    No. I won’t stop praising.

How do you handle trolls, aapne mubarakbaad di Champions Trophy jeetne ke baad, so how do you handle pressure from trolls?
Ignore! Pressure? Twitter ka?! Arre chhodo yaar, aise pressure leke kaun yeh toh pressure hai hi nahin.

People are very aggressive and people are very volatile, especially regarding religion, so jab aap jaise celebrity goes on twitter and say something about Kashmir or the comment that you made about Arundhati Roy, do you feel that in hindsight that perhaps you shouldn’t have made that, because if you say something, it influences people.
I firmly believe, whatever I have said about Arundhati Roy. I will repeat it also, I firmly believe in that; you cannot run down my country or my army ever, as simple as that.

Don’t you think that was hate speech that was very aggressive?
No no. Unka agar freedom of expression hai, toh mera bhi yeh freedom of expression hua na?

Sir, the idea of having a person, be it a man or a woman tied around a car, if what they did is wrong, then what you are saying does that make it right?
From which angle do you think it incites violence? Please explain to me. If you tie Arundhati Roy on a jeep, then from which angle does it incite violence?

Sir, the idea of tying a human being in defense..
If you’re the goodwill ambassador, if you sympathize with stone pelters, if you raise their flag and raise their questions all across the world then if you are tied on a jeep then the same people won’t throw stones and violence won’t be there. Even Arundhati will come to know that in what circumstances does the Army work.

Sir, what is it like to be in the Dutt biopic?
That’s amazing, because of Raj Kumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi’s writing, and because of Ranbir Kapoor’s acting.

How did you prepare for your role?
Fortunately, I am portraying a character who doesn’t have any mannerisms or idiosyncrasies. It is very human. Dutt saab was very, very human, ek jo hota hai na stardom wala unka kuch tha nahi. Aur yeh chiefly baap bete ki kahaani hai, Sanajy Dutt aur Sunil Dutt ki kahaani hai.

Sir, can we have a sequel to OMG? But, in today’s atmosphere when people can react violently to such movies, do you have any apprehensions?
Not from my experience. Kyun ki play toh kaafi jagah pe kiya hai maine, drama jo hai, Kishan v/s Kanhaiyya even after the movie came out, Hindustan me kiya hai, Parliament me kiya hai, Haridwar sab jagah kiya hua hai, toh maine toh aise koi reaction dekhe nahi hai in logon ke ki gadbad kar denge.

What sort of interaction have you had with Ranbir?
Ohh…terrific talent! Unique talent, what an actor he is yaar.

Sir, we have three Khans ruling the box office. Do you feel any of the young people Ranbir, Sidharth or Arjun have the potential to match up to the Khans?
I have never thought from that perspective. I think this comparison is not proper. Everyone plays with their own X factor. Salman has his own charm. Shah Rukh does his own thing. Aamir is a total package. Aamir doesn’t rely on his charm. Aamir has a bigger goodwill today than Tata or Birla. If Aamir is making something, we will watch it. It takes many years to make this goodwill. Varun has just come, Ranbir is new. They are all capable. If they get good material, then they will score as well. 100%. They are very talented.

Sir, the earlier unions used to barge on the sets, in Film City and other places in Mumbai. Do you think they are taking advantage?
Of course, they are taking advantage of a lax law and order situation. And of the lack of unity of film federation and producers, uska advantage le rahe hain

Do you think that film federation is not capable enough?
    We are not capable.

Lax law and order situation as in?
Lax law and order situation in this respect, not in general. Film city ke andar ek police station hona chaiye, aise log aaye toh unko rok hona hi chaiye.

Like in Rajasthan on the sets of Padmavati…
Arre galat hai yaar…bilkul galat hai.

  72. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha says music maestro A.R. Rahman was not completely sure of doing “Partition: 1947” and that he came on board only after she showed him a cut of the film.

“Given the subject matter and the fact that it is a western and an Indian movie… for me, there was just one choice, Mr. A.R. Rahman. So I approached him, but he was quite reticent and was not entirely sure of doing a film on Partition, understandably,” Chadha said at the music launch of the film here on Tuesday.

“But I kept on persuading him. Then I met him in Los Angeles and showed him a cut of the film. We sat in his house and watched the cut. And after the cut, he was extremely happy to come on board because he felt that the message of the film was that of reconciliation, a very human film, full of humanity and also very spiritual,” added the British director with roots in India.

She points out that the musical journey with Rahman was not just of a director working with a composer, but “a spiritual journey”.

“Rahman himself is a spiritual man and that came to play when we talked about its music and the way he composed,” she said.

The music launch was also attended by actress Huma Qureshi, singers Hariharan and Hans Raj Hans, among others.

The film revolves around the historic Partition of India in 1947 which gave birth to two nations — Pakistan and India. The film unfolds the trauma that people went through due to the division, and how it changed their lives.

When Rahman was asked to share something about composing for the film, he said: “It just reflects the film and her vision. First, when she told me it’s a film about Partition, I did not pay much attention. But when she showed the film to me, I came to know many facts about the movie, which I did not know before.”

“This film is very important, especially for the younger generation who are very judgemental and sometimes have opinionated status. Now, that will change, which is very important at this point of time in history, especially the way things are happening right now in India.”

Chadha got all teary eyed when she saw the song “Do dilon ke”, which was shown at the music launch.

“You have to understand that for a person like me, who grew up in England, under the shadow of the Partition… to come here and make a film like this in India is a big deal,” said the “Bend It Like Beckham” director.

“And the film shows a lot of pain in the world… We all want a better world for our children where they get more love and respect.”

The cast of the project, which released internationally as “Viceroy’s House”, is led by Manish Dayal, Huma and the late actor Om Puri.

It is scheduled to release in India on August 18.

In one of the mini trailers, Anushka Sharma hands over an indemnity bond to SRK mentioning that there won’t be any legal problems if they end up having intercourse. Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani thought the word ‘intercourse’ was objectionable and demanded that if he gets one lakh votes from the common people in its support, he will clear the usage of the same word. When 1 lakh votes did come in, the Chairman remained mum on clearing it.

Now that 1 lakh votes have come in, Shah Rukh Khan was asked about the CBFC controversy during the launch of the second song. He said, “The way people have voted, they should come and watch the film too. I’ve said this before as well that they should listen to the entire context of that one line. We respect the CBFC a lot. They are doing their job and we are doing ours. Having said that, I don’t think in the context of the film there is anything objectionable.”

    July 5, 2017

The team of megastar Rajinikanth’s upcoming Tamil science-fiction action drama 2.o is hopeful of converting as many screens as possible into 3D for the release of the film, says Raju Mahalingam, creative head of Lyca Productions.

2.o, a sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2010 Tamil blockbuster Enthiran, has been completely shot in 3D.

Talking about the need to have more 3D screens, Mahalingam told reporters on Wednesday, “The film has been shot in 3D, and on a budget of Rs 400 crore. As of now we have only 1500 3D screens in India as opposed to over 10,000 in China. We hope to have more screens converted into 3D and ready for the release of 2.o.”

“We have already initiated talks with Chinese distributors. We are planning big release in China as well,” he said.

Well-known distributor Tirupur Subramaniam said Tamil Nadu will have more 3D screens ready for the release of 2.o.

“Theatre owners are kicked about ‘2.o‘. We hope to have over 300 screens converted into 3D for the release of the film. As a Tamilian, I really wish the film does more business than ‘Baahubali 2‘,” Subramaniam said.

Slated for release next year, “2.o” is directed by Shankar, who has teamed up with Rajinikanth for the third time.

The film, which will be released in Telugu and Hindi, also stars Akshay Kumar as the antagonist, Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain.

Mahalingam also confirmed that Lyca Productions won’t take up new projects until there’s clarity on the tax situation in Tamil Nadu.

  85. #Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion
Kabhi khushi [Baahubali-2]… Kabhi gham [Tubelight]

The first six months of 2017 are over [how time flies!] and as I pen this piece, I am left with mixed feelings. The Hindi film industry had its share of successes — films that made us jump with joy. Conversely, the industry had its share of non-starters, failures and disasters — films that made a hole in the pocket of the distributors. It was an eventful year when you recall the thunderous start of BAAHUBALI-2 and the benchmarks it set. Conversely, there were disappointments too, especially TUBELIGHT, which didn’t set the cash registers jingling.

Year after year, the one thing that Hits and Flops teach us is that we ought to choose content over star power and also make sure that the film appeals to its target audience. We ought to respect the audience. We shouldn’t insult their intelligence. Don’t take them for granted. Films like DANGAL [the last major release of 2016], BAAHUBALI-2, JOLLY LLB-2, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA and more recently, HINDI MEDIUM reiterate the fact that the Hindustani audience wants to watch Hindustani stories. You need to cater to the pan-India audience today, not merely select metros.

What caught each one of us unaware was the stupendous start and eventual success of BAAHUBALI-2. It didn’t boast of an A-list *Hindi movie star*, but created waves within and outside the country. The fact that the Hindi version has crossed Rs 500 cr mark [NBOC; India biz] speaks volumes. Star power is important, but after the initial shows, the content does the talking. Conversely, TUBELIGHT, which brought together the Salman–Kabir Khan combination after the hugely successful BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, failed to fetch the desired start. Nor did it create new records at the BO. This, despite the superstardom of Salman Khan, Eid release and a massive screen count [4400 screens in India] to garner massive numbers.

Despite the below-the-mark BO performance of TUBELIGHT, Salman Khan remains the most popular star [along with Aamir Khan] amongst moviegoers today. A hiccup cannot dethrone him from the throne he occupies with Aamir. I am sure, his next release, TIGER ZINDA HAI — slated for Christmas 2017 release — will embark on a fantabulous note and prove the naysayers wrong.

The first six months of 2017 also hammered the fact that we need to think wisely when we sanction movie budgets. I’ve always felt that it’s not the film that fails, but the price/budget that fails. We need to spend wherever necessary, but overspending and overpricing can be disastrous if the audience rejects the movie. The losses are unbearable then. An eye on content and another on the cost of production can keep the investors safe.

The obsession with festivals, holidays and extended weekends is another fad that has gripped Bollywood. Look at the majestic BO performance of BAAHUBALI-2. Did it release during Eid, Diwali or Christmas? Did it release on a national holiday? Did it have an extended 4-day or 5-day weekend? Getting the best deal during festivals and national holidays often leads to clashes and it’s no longer a lucrative prospect in today’s times when the stakes are so high. Both, RAEES and KAABIL would’ve amassed more had they arrived solo.

After having carved a niche for himself as an artist, illustrator, graphic designer and an ad filmmaker, Ravi Udyawar makes an astounding debut as a director with MOM. Ravi truly wins the hearts of everyone with the emotional connect that he brings in the film. The film’s first half is shot very well building an excellent set up and well-detailed and etched out characterisation. The first half also mirrors the reason for the brewing tension between Sridevi and her daughter. The film however begins to dip and stretches in the second half, especially during the pre-climax. By the time the film reaches the climax, the so far built up fizz starts fading away. Had the film been shorter in length, it would’ve been far more effective. Amongst all the highpoints of the film, do not miss the film’s climax and the scene in the film is when Sridevi breaks down when she sees her daughter in the hospital. This scene will definitely give you goose bumps.

    • I wrote this elsewhere –
A movie should be profitable for everyone in chain. I can make a movie for 50 crore and sell it for 20 and the movie does 40 crore DS…it is not a blockbuster because it was sold for 20. Similarly I will not call a movie flop because it was made for 100 crore and sold to distributors for 200 crore..it did net business of 300 (DS of 150 crore). It was foolishness on part of distributor to give that much money.

I think the right way is that …the movie should earn in multiples of budget and everyone in chain should earn (small or big).

      Like

      • “A movie should be profitable for everyone in chain.”

Ideally that’s a perfect scenario but it doesn’t work always. Even huge blockbusters can have some losses at Exhibitor levels and small distributor level. I can explain. The distribution price is always a bidding level and usually at the highest level, it is at sane level. For example: Raees was bought by Thadani for 70 crs for All India rights. It is perfectly fine at this stage and needs to do 70 crs distribution share for recovery and profit. But, Thadani has sold it at some state level centers. Usually they sell 30-40% of them at huge profits and here it at bidding level. Lets say West Bengal, if Srk’s last movie did around 7 crores share.. the bidding keeps going until it cross that highest level and even then someone will buy it at 8 crores share. So, if it does 9 crores, he will get just 1 crore profit and they play it like lottery. In hindsight.. Thadani might have got this state’s share for approx 4-5 crores in whole India deal and he has made twice the amount but the small distributor will sometimes end up loss even if the movie does 7.5 crores. No one can account for that. Similarly again that state level distributors will have local distributors and Exhibitors who keep bidding in very lower level in Lakhs and that is minuscule level and usually not considered in the so called ‘chain’ unless its Bahubali or some huge grosser. So, Thadani got Raees for 70 crores and Raees did 67 distribution share but do you really think Thadani lost money on Raees? Think again. The classification is at very broad level and infact Industry doesn’t like or have tags of hit/superhit/blockbuster in the trade.

Note: Not expecting replies from the usual suspects, please keep out of it.

        Like

        • LOL

All the reports on Raees losses have been at sub-distributor levels. And the losses are quite heavy as your Thadani sold off the territorial rights at a profit and all-India distributor share was around 65 cr only!

Here is my comment from the beginning of this thread:

Its a shame that double standards are applied to different stars by the same sites/sources.

All this is obvious for years! NG, and thereafter inconsistent judgements exist from sites, fans etc.

A parallel world exists for certain fans which is nowhere close to in sync with ground realities or recall value or perception or whatever it is. Persistent belief in verdicts allows such people to utilize that propaganda to further a story that is silly.

For SRK only CE is a memorable film since 2008! Everything else is below par or worse, critically and box office expectation wise – BOI’s verdicts are just a drug for fans as it’s a fan site. Literally anyone can see it.

For Salman the big openings mask what are poor films barring Bajrangi Bhaijaan and maybe Sultan. His stardom rests on his charism alone. Any trends week to week reveal how fragile his films are – Tubelight shows how badly things can go wrong.

BOI numbers might be very close to reality but what use are numbers if you peddle propaganda. 2007-08 recession anyone?

          • The only times I’ve seen SRK look truly happy and make public appearances relatively soon after release was with OSO and then CE. It’s true. the other stuff is for fan debates or for folks like Taran and Nahta to pump up or have distribution debates about (most of these debates also operate on fictitious terms). Here I’ll give credit to SRK. He didn’t come out celebrating for HNY or Raees or any of his other films in this entire period.

    • Anurag Kashyap launched the poster of Gurgaon, a noir thriller, which is slated to hit the screens on August 4.

Inspired by true events, Gurgaon, starring Akshay Oberoi, Ragini Khanna and Pankaj Tripathi, is the directorial debut of National Award winning cinematographer Shanker Raman.

Kashyap said in a statement, “I saw Gurgaon last year and for me, it is genuinely one of the best suspense thrillers I’ve seen in the longest time and it’s in my list of best movies. The amount of tension the movie builds, it’s not only engaging but it also has some incredible performances. It’s worth watching.”

The film tells the story of Kehri Singh, a real estate baron, who runs his business Preet Real Estate in his daughter’s name. She is his lucky charm. Kehri Singh’s oldest son Nikki Singh is often sidelined by his father as a good for nothing, who only brings bad luck. Driven by his need to pay off a large debt to a local bookie, Nikki Singh sets off a chilling chain of events, that unwittingly force his cold-blooded father to confront his buried past.

Ajay G. Rai, the producer of the film and co-founder of JAR Pictures along with Alan McAlex, said, “Gurgaon is a noir thriller and a very special film for JAR Pictures. This is our fourth film to release after Liar’s Dice, Killa, Nil Battey Sannata and the first film that we are releasing ourselves. We are really looking forward to the audiences’ response.”

Talking about his directorial debut which he also co-wrote, Shanker said: “This film has been built and supported by incredible talent. The fact that it is ready for a nationwide release is evidence that anything is possible when we love and support each other. Come celebrate their work and be a part of it.”

Ragini said when she read the script, she was excited that the director saw her as an actor and not just as a bubbly girl out of a TV show.

“To get an opportunity which is so creative is very evolving for an actor. It was liberating for me as I explored a lot of untapped emotional areas and it was a journey of self-discovery. Shanker was very generous, so it was an enriching experience working on Gurgaon,” she added.

Akshay is equally excited. “The story is about a strained relationship between a father and a son, set in the fastest growing city in India, Gurgaon,” he said.

Financially both are sound on paper.

The surprise package is TEPK, it’s carrying buzz and potential for tax exemptions. I wouldn’t call it epic, but it has huge potential if it strikes the right chords.

JHMS seems less provocative than Tamasha, so really the surprise or shock here is weak performance as a bog standard romance with a slightly nuanced Imtiaz Ali tone is not a huge leap in faith for uncles and aunties on the YRF template. This is a core SRK fanbase romance, he’s in Dear Zindagi looks, energetic with probably a decent soundtrack, a familiar co-star. Core fanbase should breeze this past 100 CR minimum, IF it doesn’t he’s struggling big time as this is a strength genre.

The pressure is on JHMS not TEPK.

      • put differently LAK today would have easily done 150 if not more. Did 65 or so at the time. Rockstar wasn’t liked much, it too did as much or more. Johar’s not so strong ADHM managed a 100. Piku did 80. Pink did 10-15 less than this. Kahaani did the same. The point I’m trying to make is that 100 is not a standard at all for relatively normal Imtiaz Ali fare with SRK. By the way the numbers above show the kind of disaster Tubelight truly is. Barfi did a 100! BMB did a 100! I won’t get into how much YJHD did. Less than 150 is not even acceptable for JHMS. Now it’s true that Imtiaz Ali normally doesn’t make big grossers. Except when he’s doing something ordinary like LAK and that I believe is the right standard here. Very much doubt this is a Tamasha! In other words a film that in any scenario with any star couldn’t have done much. They’re even recycling the JWM title! Again a film which with a bigger star or some years later might have done a whole lot more too. of course the ‘hit’ categorization is a different matter. You sell a SRK film in a strength genre at a lower price than would be the case for most of his major commercial films, let alone in this genre, and get to that categorization more easily. Not saying the film cannot be a hit or anything but how much it does will once again tell us something about SRK. Getting to 200 one way or the other seems to be a challenge for him these days. JHMS might be the right film for him to get to a higher range (even if not 200). Unless the film isn’t that great but then an actor’s judgment is part of the deal.

Definitely looks more in LAK and JWM space than Tamasha or Rockstar. Let’s see and under normal circumstances it would be a 200 CR bar but I don’t expect this is how it’s going to be evaluated.

          • Tamasha actually also didnt looked like a niche movie when the trailors came. I hope thats not the case here.

200 crs should not be a problem with good content. BM did 180 crs with a clash so really with accepted content, I can see this touching 250 crs. The thanda promos and poor songs might keep the opening below the mark to under 20 crs but still if the content is good, it will jump by the evening shows…A bit like how PK did..Since the movie is multiplexy, I guess 250 crs can be reached with accepted content…

The issue is the acceptance of content as is always the case with SRK these days…Hope Imtiaz keeps him in check and doesnt let him meddle much as what happened with Dilwale and that one ended up neither as a Rohit shetty movie nor a romantic one…

          • The problem Krish is that you don’t account for SRK’s lower box office status at this point. In other words one can’t get away by saying ‘content’. At some level every star suffers precisely because of ‘content’. Relative to the star’s strength genres. In other words Salman can do junk because that’s what people want from him. This doesn’t mean there’s no ‘content’. Just that Kick or Sultan are good enough for his core audience. However Jai Ho or PRDP or Tubelight also prove that if expectations are not met he can suffer as well. However the difference is that he keeps coming up with huge initials and/or big grosses irrespective of a setback here or there (admittedly Tubelight is a huge failure for him). With SRK his strength genres are not as strong at the box office and he hasn’t been able to find success in other genres. And he’s done EVERYTHING. from masala to sci-fi to a caper film to something small like DZ. Everything either underperforms or fails. Even the initials aren’t quite where they were even when RA1 was releasing. Now can he still pull in big initials? Sure! But the possibility of doing that gets reduced by the day because a number of things need to be in place for that to happen whereas Salman does it without breaking a sweat. Because even if you’re a huge star continued disappointment at the box office does affect the initial. But even when the initial is good or better the films almost always fizzle out. Whether its Raees or DZ. When the latter opened much bigger than Piku or Pink what was the excuse for not doing better than those films? It barely matched Pink and much well short of Piku. It’s basically doing Kahani with a much bigger start. One must have an honest discussion about these things. For years these narratives have been peddled about SRK. the ‘content’ argument is a bit too convenient. And I hate to be even more blunt here but you’ve been predicting very high numbers for SRK repeatedly for a number of films for a very long time. It doesn’t happen and you blame ‘content’. As opposed to what? other stars who flop in fine films? Al of Ranbir’s flops wouldn’t have been hits with any other star. But he does get affected by these failures right? SRK hasn’t been setting the benchmarks for years. Even overseas Aamir has been ruling the roost. We know what Salman has been doing. But somehow predictions for all three are almost the same. Think about what you’re saying here. That an Imtiaz Ali film with SRK will trend like Hirani and get to a total higher than every other film barring D3, Bajrangi, PK, Dangal. Anything can happen of course but if this is your prediction for such a film you should be predicting 400 at the very least for every film Aamir touches. or should have been for a while. I’d be more reasonable and say that even in the best case scenario that’s unlikely. Why? YJHD is the only rom-com that has done that well and it was some right combination of stars and music. Johar did a lot lot less with the same male lead and Anushka and with himself as director and the Ash factor. RNBDJ in 2008 and despite trending very well (didn’t open massively) still couldn’t get anywhere close to Ghajini. Again my problem isn’t with the film. Maybe SRK pulls a rabbit out of a hat and it does 200. My questions are always about the ‘narrative’. To keep saying ‘content’ is simply not honest beyond a point. The results speak for themselves. This phantom is created where SRK can always get to the very highest benchmarks except that ‘content’ then pulls him back. Star careers are not static, even the biggest stars see their numbers affected when they stop delivering. But how much more do you want SRK to try? Just recently he’s had Dilwale, Raees, HNY (I could keep going back from Don2 to JTHJ and so on.. all high profile films with many advantages that do’t do much). The former two didn’t cross 150. The last one probably didn’t do more than 180 if one is honest about it. DZ even at the lower end wasn’t anything special. Won’t get into Fan. In fairness to SRK he’s trying things across the board. In each case I see fans or others (those who claim they’re not fans but somehow always have the kindest narratives on him) trying to game the narrative (art film, content, Imtiaz Ali doesn’t get big grossers etc). Ultimately it’s not about these box office debates online. At the end of the day the distributor doesn’t care what people say. He knows how much money he’s lost! And specially in the post BB2 or post Dangal age does one really want to give SRK huge prizes for even getting to 150? Sure he might still be a bigger draw than most other stars (unlike some here I don’t believe Akshay will ever get bigger than SRK unless something surprising happens.. but SRK is struggling for obvious reasons whereas Akshay has stabilized with his mix). Look at Aamir’s top 5 grossers, look at Salman’s. And look at where SRK is. Shouldn’t one’s predictions account for this? Anything can always happen. YJHD surprised everyone by almost doing what ETT did. But one doesn’t normally expect this.

I’m never fooled by this content thing. Box office rewards content but does not mean that ANY star in same film gets rewarded the same. It’s like saying batsman like Dravid and Tendulkar produce same results in same situations. Former is more a defensive batter who is great when chips are down. Latter takes game away from you. Obviously more nuanced debate can be had. That said SRK no matter how many underperformers is always equivalent to Aamir or Salman. No real evidence now for nearly 9 years. General narrative has moved to either Salman or Aamir being 1-2. SRK not even close to those 2 tails. Akshay in his dreams being a bigger star than SRK. Hrithik pissing his career away. The rest miles off. Tubelight has now separated top 2 if Dangal hadn’t already.

This debate is ON THEIR DAY SRK OR HRITHIK ARE BIGGEST – waiting for that day. Yawnnnn as cooldude said.

          • I am not saying that SRK is close to Aamir or Salman. Infact a sub 20 cr grosser is not very good for SRK and that obviously shows a decreased BO pull. But the release without a clash and then a subsequent week full of holidays gives the movie the chance for that total. And I did say the opening of the movie is a big test for SRK considering the promos and songs and it increasingly looks like a 20 cr opening not a 25 cr. Thats Fan range which was more of a niche movie, so what I am saying does account for his decreased BO pull these days. But its also true is that once the WOM comes in, a movie starring any big star will jump larger than normal because audience do seek these kind of big star movie. Now i am not saying anywhere that he is as big a star as Aamir or Salman now..

And its important to set the bar also correct. If a BM can do a 180 crs with a clash, a bar for a SRK movie even with his decreased BO pull has to be 200cr+ without a clash. And nowhere i am saying it will do 300cr+ as I know the ceiling of these kind of movies..

          • With all due respect you and Master are two sides of the coin in one sense. He sets the bar rather too low, you set it very high. Your point is a fair one on 200 for JHMS using the BM analogy. However then one can’t have it both ways — ‘I expected 200, it didn’t do it but it’s a clean trade hit at 150’! I know how both things can be true but one can stress one side or the other of the equation depending on what happens. But then you also take it to 250. That would be much higher than CE. In other words in the best possible world you think SRK can get to that number in an Imtiaz Ali film. Maybe he can if the film is exceptional (though no one really talks about ‘content’ in those scenarios!) but if you say this regularly for SRK’s films it’s hard to see where his box office pull is diminished (if he can get to 250 in an Imtiaz Ali he can presumably clear 300 in the right Rohit Shetty!). In other words he can almost or even literally get to the highest benchmarks, if he doesn’t it’s about ‘content’. And the reason I started off with that statement is that in either case you take SRK’s position as a given and then work backwards from it to explain the numbers rather than using the numbers to draw an obvious conclusion.

          • Good comment Satyam. Problem is other folks join the bandwagon with you but there is ton of difference between your points and someone like Jayshah(even if in their heads they think they are same).

In regards to SRK’s stardom yes it is obvious to anyone that it is down now but if someone buys the film at 150 crs HIT, you call that under-selling which is not right. Why is SRK underselling? Just to get a hit tag? Even with Raees when the release date with clash was announced, I was the only one who kept saying it will do 160 crores at best and little outlier at 180 but it is not possible more during that phase. What it ended up doing was even far 130 odd. But if you think the trending could have better and hold up but still the max it could have done was 160 as my prediction and there was no way it would have done 200 crores in that clash unless its collecting 15 crores on weekdays daily. Such films are never the must watch movies anytime and unless it becomes Dangal/Bajrangi or something very rarely movies trend. So, personally for me Raees disappointed by not reaching 160. If is 160 and clean Hit, it would have done its job for the current situation. Nothing else was possible once they decided on the clash.

Similarly, JHMS doing 150 or whatever seems fine for the current situation and doing 180 will be Super acceptance from audience and similarly 200 is outlier(something like CE) and incidentally Srk was coming of under-performers before CE and no one expected it to do 200 crs. Similarly, no one is expecting JHMS to do 200 crores and if it does it will still be a SURPRISE.

So, my point is simple.. either SRK is not down and he should get 200 crs with JHMS easily or he’s down and getting 200 cr at this stage is surprising, the situation looks around 150-160 and that’s what the film has been bought. You can’t keep calling him down and still keep the min bar at 200 crores which he has done just once.

          • Actually in all the time I’ve known him I think Jay has been totally non-partisan in his comments with respect to the box office. What happens though is that if you attack unfair narratives or dubious numbers or whatever fans equate this with attacking the star. let’s be honest for a min and consider what people would have said about SRK if he had had the career Aamir has had between Lagaan and Dangal. They would have called him the greatest star in the history of Indian cinema, probably of the universe! Or for that matter Salman. How do I know this? Because I see how the successes of other stars are celebrated all the time with far less that is worthy of celebrating! I’ve seen it for years. Aamir is accepted as the top star or ‘one of the…’ top stars only after stupendous commercial and critical success. It’s like saying I’ll accept someone as the top director after he makes Titanic and Avatar. The rest however just have to to make 200m films regularly! So it’s been a completely unfair, totally biased narrative for many years. I too have been attacked countless times in the past for precisely this reason. Because I too always attacked these narratives. If you say the things that BOI does or if you say the things fans do a lot of times you ought to be questioned. This doesn’t mean one is questioning the star. That’s a different (though sometimes not unrelated debate).

To get to your other point there’s nothing contradictory in what I said. A SRK who’s ‘down’ (this too is euphemistic terminology by the way.. suggests something temporary when in fact for a decade he’s been way behind the Aamir curve and for a large portion of that time way behind the Salman one as well.. unless he reinvents himself dramatically he’s not just ‘down’ but someone who cannot be compared with Aamir/Salman in any sense.. on a very good day he can get some extremely strong opening numbers on day 1 or whatever.. this based on his history… but that ‘very good day’ too doesn’t come along very often anymore.. or the ‘cost’ of producing that very big day is very high) still ought to be putting up fairly high numbers. When every Tom, Dick, Harry in all kinds of genres has breaches 100 crores that bar simply isn’t a very significant one anymore. Even a SRK who’s ‘down’ shouldn’t just have a bar set for him marginally above that for Akshay. Unless one is arguing that he’s at Akshay level now (that is not my claim). So being ‘down’ doesn’t mean anything goes! The rest of the arguments (content, competition etc) are still excuses. Here the BM example is the right one. With competition a Bhansali historical does 180 and where the lead star is Ranveer Singh. ‘Nuff said! Of course one shouldn’t fall into the gender trap. Maybe it really is about Deepika. BM, CE, YJHD. None of the lead stars has gotten close to that sort of total without her. Let’s be fair! Even in HNY she presumably contributed to that record opening number! Of course she also got a 100 in another Bhansali film. In any case just because SRK isn’t what he once might have been doesn’t mean that we should celebrate even a 100 or a 150. And we all know what the genre standards are. If Piku does 80 is DZ can’t DZ (specially after a much stronger initial) get to a 100? Just 20 more? Is there even a shadow of a doubt that irrespective of anything else Salman would easily have crossed 200 with Raees and probably done a fair bit more? In his current form either his films are completely rejected and don’t even get much of an initial or else they just easily do 200. Even the Barjatya film did this and that was a failure. Once you do a film with a director as hot as Shetty and you can’t cross 140 or whatever what kind of credit should you get? Is it too much to ask Dilwale to do what PRDP did? If it were about competition why did BM do so much more. Why wasn’t it a 100-120 crore success because of the competition? It’s like Johar who in a much easier genre didn’t do more than a 100 last time around. Shivaay was stopping him? C’mon! It just is the case that people explain any kind of sub performance using the competition argument!

Once again one can set the bar lower for SRK based on the last ten years. But for this one must accept that he’s not comparable to the top two stars in any sense and not just ‘down’. And secondly one cannot set the bar so low where it’s only somewhat higher than the BMB gross! Abhishek is doing a number of solos now. I know what his box office record has been for a long time. I’m not going to set the bar at 50 crores and say ‘hey it’s a hit, no questions needed’!

Finally it’s not just about box office narratives. Fans often say very silly things even otherwise. For instance ‘SRK isn’t going to do a big film for another 5 years’, ‘SRK told Gauri over breakfast that he knew Raees wouldn’t cross 150’ etc etc. I’m only exaggerating slightly. I won’t even get into the stuff an Akshay fan says here. You can’t be taken seriously if you make such claims. We all have favorite stars but box office realities are a different matter. Similarly just because we don’t like certain stars or are opposed to them for whatever psychological reasons also doesn’t mean we should deny reality. But this is exactly what happens all the time. I’ve never seen Jay do any of this stuff. I don’t even find this a debatable point.

I doubt I can add much here. Master there are always wars on blogs. And with NG before this a lot has spilled over. Some folks just never get along. I’ve said politely a few times to 1 member to not mention me. If it happens I respond with venom, like today. In any case I try my best to separate my dislike or like for any star from their respective box office performance of films. Yes I’m happy if good cinema or content is rewarded. But I’ll bash rubbish too. It’s up to readers and fans of those stars’ films to know the difference. Maybe my language can be more refined or kinder but I am prepared to bash D3 despite being an Aamir Khan fan. In any case I’m not looking for character references here, I’m passing my time. I don’t partake heavily in politics but am fine with it. Yes it’s a film blog but NG & SS have always welcomed other stuff; news, sport, politics whatever.

I have always read box office differently. I have a trust nothing policy & by in large whether it’s inflated producer numbers, dodgy commentary, dodgy bias Q&A’s, inconsistent verdicts, dodgy trade numbers I feel vindicated. I preferred when centre numbers were available and I could draw my own conclusions.

I can list all films I liked of each star but it means nothing to some people with historical vendettas. Z called me a Bachchan fan. There are 5-6 people on this blog who know my age and can vouch that I’m 80’s born and I know nothing prior to this. I never elevated Aamir to any past generation star as I have no credibility or knowledge to do so. I’ll let the SRK and Bachchan fans fight it out, the ones who lived both generations.

Also that one aamirsaurabh comment is in response to previous comments. It’s your judgement as to who brings level of conversation down. I’m not aamirsaurabh’s fan – I agree he writes too many comments and can consolidate but in this instance his sentiments were right though he could have written it differently. The response was in your own words to someone who ‘bringing down this forum for teenage fan forums’. In this instance I think you’re being disingenuous and pointing at the wrong person.

And this comment ‘I’m hoping Jayshah, Marcus and others to even be little mature than the above person and not bring down this forum for teenage fan forums.’

I’m sorry I am not accountable for every Aamir khan’s fans comments, just like every Muslim is not responsible for a terrorist attack in the name of Islam.

I don’t expect you to be accountable for every SRK’s fans’ comments, too taper down the tone.

          • It is actually funny to read the above comments. Folks who are whole day in and day out commenting about other stars are actually unbiased and whereas if someone likes SRK he needs to give defenses for everything. LMAO. Do I even comment negatively on Aamir khan anywhere? Or Salman Khan? Or Akshay Kumar? It is based on the movies for me.

Salman – Loved BB(1st half not great except intermission scene) and Sultan as well but was laughing at Tubelight even at the promos and the whole concept.
Akshay – Loved Baby, liked Airlift and found Rustom laughable and even preferred Mohenjodaro over Rustom. Didn’t like LLB 2. Don’t even bother with movies like Singh is King or something.
Hrithik – Liked Mohenjodaro over Kaabil and found Kaabil laughable.
Ajay Devgn – Found Shivaay good effort but not to my taste and disappointing to its setup. Liked Drishyam but found it over-rated.

Regarding Aamir – I think I mentioned very very clearly the 1st halves of both PK and Dangal are phenomenal and best in movie business and the movie can just run on those strengths. I didn’t get vowed with both their 2nd halves. It doesn’t matter coz it will cater to majority of folks in India and that is displayed in the business but personally I found issues with their 2nd halves and mentioned during my 1st day reviews as much clearly I can write it up. There is no hatred there and no bias from my side, whatever folks want to twist and believe.

I keep reiterating the fact that this is no fan forum and just preferring one star over others doesn’t make me hate all of the other stars. I don’t dislike anyone and will stand in first day first show for any movie/star if I liked the promos. I was so against Shivaay after 1st theatrical promo and if you see that thread.. I said I loved the 2nd theatrical promo and will watch it on big screen and still went ahead to watch it. Who is doing that on here? 99% folks just watch their fav stars movies and keep commenting on others and yet folks expect me to justify? Lol.

Lastly I don’t think I have ever used BOI in my argument anywhere in last 1-2 years and yet folks link all that when discussing with me and expecting me to criticize BOI as they called Aamir’s some films under-performers. Lol.. why do I care? Even Jayshah.. I posted the 3 figures of Kaabil and he just rants over that how BOI is under-reporting Kaabil and what not.. I mean, who cares.. am not even supporting BOI at any level. If I reply to a point about business structure how all the distributors down the ‘chain’ will not make money always to Munna – even that is not even read by folks and bring usual discussion. If they can even use little thought, they will realize my point has nothing to do with any film or any star but just the structure of the distribution.

He has been doing this since NG days and i will expose him again. Its not his fault. He is insecure for Aamir (god knows why) and jealous against other stars. (He knows why)

The below are the list of Salman Khan films in last few years which i rate very highly.

    – Sultan (he acting was better than Aamir in Dangal; Dangala as a movie was better)
    – Bajrangi Bhaijaan (better movie than PK)
    – Kick (better movie than Dhoom 3 and slightly below Chennai Express)
    – Ek tha Tiger (again better than Dhoom 3)

    and so on.

Now i know the moment Jayshah and his gang will realise failure to argue on quality, they will chose Box office to defend.

    What the crap man????

Bullet 2 – I give you that & it’s hardly a huge point in essence. Both films got reviewed well so preference to BB is fine
Bullet 3 & 4 – I’ve said all along D3 was not good. Anyway what will hurt you most is Aamir’s ‘worst’ film breaks all records. I think people started expecting too much from Salman after Bajrangi and even Sultan. Those films were complete exceptions as his movies usually don’t have this level of quality. With Aamir it’s a totally different case – for him a masala film like Dhoom 3 is an exception, whereas a Dangal is par for the course.

Aamir wil stay far, far ahead of the competition, just don’t see anyone even in the same zone. His commitment to making quality cinema is unparalleled in Indian film industry.”

You believe what you want it’s fine. It’s another thing that you’re quite crazy! God help you! I hope TEPK is a BLOCKBUSTER for your sake. A blockbuster film too. So that Akshay can climb that ladder of yours. The ladder of success that finally after so many years you had to pucker up to leaving Aamir on top. I bet that really hurt you.

As I write I refresh and read more of your nonsense, I can’t keep up.

“400 Cr with one movies in 2 years = 300 cr with two movies in 2 years = 250 Cr with one movie every year = 200 Cr with two movies every year = 150 Cr with 3 movies every year = 100 Cr with 4 movies every year”

LOL!!!!!! Please you’re only writing this for AKSHAY KUMAR. Quit the modest sly liking of Salman, SRK etc. as it stems only to counter your Aamir anxiety/depression/phobia. By your logic some nobody actor could do 10 films in a year and be in the running. Utter rubbish.

Everyone knows Akshay is not blockbuster box office material. He’s G2P. Go to person after everyone’s calendars are booked. He’s free he’ll work, work hard but not work as hard as anyone else.

    • Satyam – this is one example.. anyone comments negatively on Aamir he is labelled ‘hater’ automatically. This is the level of discussion here and though the above comments are not even mine or am part of it. I’m hoping Jayshah, Marcus and others to even be little mature than the above person and not bring down this forum for teenage fan forums.

Yaaaaaawwwnnnn….wake me when Akshay breaches 150 CR on his own (and not piggybacking Rajni). Until than, his fans here need to stop talking about other actors and their box office standing! After Dangal, Aamir is Apple and Microsoft rolled into one. Akshay is cheap chinese rip off!!!!

  94. Once again Shubhra “finicky” Gupta finds flaws in a movie which is receiving universal critical acclaim!!
MOM movie review: Sridevi tries hard to carry the film, but a weak plot fails her
MOM movie review: Sridevi has to do the heavy-lifting of the film, as actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, Sajal Ali and Adnan Siddiqui are not left with enough in hand. It gets so busy keeping Sridevi at the centre-stage that this rape-and-revenge drama turns less impactful. For the rest follow the link below:

    • I think some others also commented how Sridevi’s projection in every frame ruined the impact! There is no universal critical acclamation according to what I am reading from many sources! Only Akshay Khanna is getting some praise.
