I’ve said politely a few times to 1 member to not mention me. If it happens I respond with venom, like today. In any case I try my best to separate my dislike or like for any star from their respective box office performance of films. ……………………..

………….I don’t expect you to be accountable for every SRK’s fans’ comments, too taper down the tone.”

    Well said, Jayshah.
aamirsurabh has reduced his comments and just reports about Dangal numbers and appreciation. He responded to a nonsense comment in the same vein. I dont know why always he is targetted. And he is called that person. Now I will also do the same. The person who attacked him called me vengeful and it is a very personal comment which I let go. It is like hitting below the belt. This person is very rude and abrasive and tries to divide and rule.
As for teenage fans, is there an age barrier that teenagers are unwelcome here? This person is the most biased one on Satyam’s blog but pretends otherwise. I try to avoid him as much as possible.

Jayshah: I have no issues with aamirsaurabh and didn’t even get into the debate with others today. I’m talking about the use of word ‘haters’ so easily always. I found the example and put it out there.. but the issue was last week. See the below comment.. mine was very sarcastic reply by posting own twitter handle and in return I get called a ‘hater’. Previous issue was constant posing of articles which was not personal.

Is it me or you get upset when SRK does not in general get the respect in this blog that you give to him?

Complaining?? Where? I didn’t mention you except just today about in ‘hoping’ to have mature discussions. Don’t worry, you are not that important for me to keep complaining about your behavior. I had to mention you as you keep replying to my posts even when I’m ignoring yours. Jayshah is different, he’s very old member and is part of the discussion of this whole setup in deep measures.

Read what provoked that! You’re providing your own endorsement and character reference of how unbiased you are yesterday.

In that instance, aamirsaurabh provided news that quite frankly was ‘new’, whether it was interesting or not is up for people to respond to. You either have a Twitter handle or created one to laugh at him. You wrote ‘haha’ and then gave breaking news that JHMS is releasing on 4th August.

Dangal’s releasing in Turkey is new news. Everyone knows JHMS is releasing 4th August. Now Turkey might already be a market Bollywood films have been to before but it’s irrelevant as this is a ‘new’ information. No one on the blog would know and probably only 10% care. Whereas your tweet everyone knows and along with that comes provocation and an intention to ridicule someone in quite a childish way.

You basically ridiculed him, so he responds in kind.

What did you expect? I can bet no expected a tweet from you on release date of something everyone knows.

Tubelight grossed a poor 12 crore nett apprx in week two as it took its two week collection to 114.50 crore nett. The drop week on week is a huge 88% and there is not much to come in the third week as the film goes down to 1-2 screenings at most multiplexes. It will probably be a 116 crore nett finish for the film which will mean not even adding 15 crore nett post the first week.

The second week figures are the lowest for a Salman Khan film since the 6 crore nett of Veer in 2010. They are also lower than most of the major releases this year and even a film like Hindi Medium having better second week collections. The top second week collections of 2017 are as follows.

    1. Bahubali – The Conclusion – 1,42,50,00,000

    2. Badrinath Ki Dulhania – 26,73,00,000

    3. Jolly LLB 2 – 23,77,00,000

    4. Hindi Medium – 18,23,00,000

    5. Kaabil – 16,66,00,000

    6. Raees – 15,90,00,000

    7. Tubelight – 12,00,00,000 apprx

The above seven are the only films to cross 10 crore nett in the first week. If we look at outright Hindi films which does not include Bahubali – The Conclusion then Tubelight will be the highest grosser till date in Bihar, Assam and Odisha mainly because no outright Hindi film has really collected here and there was two solid holidays in these parts post Eid in week one.

  9. Spiderman Decent – Guest Iin London And Mom Low
    Friday 07 July 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Spiderman – The Homecoming has taken a good to decent opening at the box office 30-35% after recording good paid preview collections which should come out at around 2 crore nett. The film opened post 6pm across most major cities in India. The last Spiderman film in 2014 opened to 7.48 crore nett collections while The Amazing Spiderman in 2012 opened to 6.77 crore nett and The Homecoming will be looking to get in that same range but it could fall short. It is the third best opening for an Hollywood release this year after Fast & Furious 8 and XXX – Return Of Xander Cage

The Hindi films Guest Iin London and Mom opened poorly with the Guest Inn London being around 8-10% while Mom opened to around 15-20%. This minor clash will go in the favour of Mom as this content is more for the evening audience and it will increase this lead in the later shows. Mom will have good chances of improving collections on Saturday in the metros. Also the fact that Spiderman – The Homecoming has not taken a huge opening will also help its prospects. Guest Inn London will also be looking for that huge jump on Saturday but with two films ahead in the race and and a low opening level it will have to be some phenomenal jump.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal has made Rs 1,800 crore worldwide and the actor will take home Rs 257 crore for it.

    Hindustan Times

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is now the most successful movie ever made in India, and a big credit for that goes to the business it did in China. The film made more than Rs 1,800 crore in total, of which Rs 1200 was minted at the Chinese box office.

With such huge amounts involved, it’s only obvious that Aamir will also benefit from the film’s success. According to a report in The Telegraph, the actor will take home Rs 257 crore as per a profit-sharing agreement. He is also one of the film’s producers.

Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan is all set to portray a dwarf on the silver screen in his untitled next. While the makers will be using VFX for the special effects, they have come up with a rather interesting strategy to enhance SRK’s ‘dwarfdom’.

A source close to the project recently revealed, “Wherever Shah Rukh Khan will shoot his scenes, there will be holes drilled on the platform into which the actor will get in. It is done to keep his height true to the script’s demand. His look will be a mix of VFX and props. It is used in the West and will now be put to use in this film as well.”

Every major big budgeted film has the problem now of lofty standards because of BB2 & Dangal. Extraordinary budgets and a few big disasters coming. Lucky Avatar 2 is far away otherwise even Hollywood will be deconstructing Bollywood like BB2 did. Good news for SRK’s dwarf film – Avatar 2 shifted from Dec 18 to 20.

Latest in their promotion stop is also going to be at various schools. Coming Sunday morning will be an exciting one for a lot of school kids as a super fun time has been planned for them by Ranbir & Katrina.

Ranbir and Katrina’s Sunday morning has been blocked by school kids from 5th grade to 12th grade of various schools, some accompanied by their parents at St. Andrews auditorium in Bandra.

Ranbir, who himself is seen playing a school kid in his upcoming film Jagga Jasoos will be interacting extensively with kids along with his co-star Katrina Kaif during these visits.

There is a master class planned on the song Galti Se Mistake from the movie which has caught the fancy of school kids at large as it is extremely relatable for them.

There will be a quick quiz round hosted by the star cast of the film around Jagga Jasoos and they will also answer all the questions of the little ones at the event.

Despite a phenomenally prolific career — especially when stars have become so publicly accessible — it’s astounding how she’s managed to maintain an irresistible mystique around herself.

It’s a big deal to see her on screen, let alone that there are hardly any worthwhile scripts with a woman at 53 in the lead. If there was one, it would be written for Sridevi — undoubtedly the female Amitabh Bachchan of her times. And she gives it her all. Speaking of which, Bachchan’s done ‘Paa’, it’s only fair that ‘Mom’ is Sri’s movie.

  21. Piku Director Shoojit Sircar Is Calling For A Ban On Children’s Reality Shows, And We Are On His Side

Child beauty pageants and reality shows have earned a lot of flak all across the globe, and legitimately so. What may seem like a cute display of adorable kids frolicking around on stage, in full blown makeup, actually reeks of exploitation.

In India, there has been a sudden boom in a bunch of reality shows featuring mostly pre-pubescent participants – from Sabse Bada Kalakar to Super Dancer to Junior Masterchef (which is the desi counterpart of the hit international series). They regularly get high TRPs, which makes these shows anything but fun and frivolous behind the scenes.

One of the concerned people about the rising popularity of such reality shows happens to be the director of the film Piku and the producer of Pink, Shoojit Sircar. He took to Twitter to send out an open call for banning all reality shows involving children, “Humble request to authorities to urgently ban all reality shows involving children. It’s actually destroying them emotionally and their purity.”

The tweet has already garnered 4.9k retweets, and 8.2k likes, with as many as 476 comments contributing to the conversation.

Earlier in the year, Shoojit Sircar made his short film debut with a film on young students writing to their parents to understand the immense pressure they are under to succeed in exams (and life). The short film, titled #ReleaseThePressure, was made in the hopes to trigger an open dialogue between teens and their parents.

With this tweet, Sircar hopes to bring in some good change, and we hope someone listens and takes the right call.

Just ban all reality TV shows period. When Big Brother began it had normal people, now you get a lesbian/gay/transvestite/singer whatever just for affect. Only reality shows I liked are music ones. I use to love Indian Idol just purely to know what song would be sung.

This is too strong a message, how would he interpret a child actor for example.

      • Children below what age should be banned is another moot point as some would say children below 10 years should not be allowed & others would justify granting children above 6 years to participate in such events as now a days more & more children growing precocious much earlier than their predecessors is another reason in favour of their demand!! No one answer to such a controversial question!!

When others were gloating that Dangal was crushed and made fun of and ignored Dangal’s achievements, we bore it with grace. Destiny gave Dangal its due and that made them see red. They did not want discussions on Dangal’s success or any inputs when Dangal started to take the lead. Aamirsaurabh’s entry made discussion and enlightenment about chinese bo transparent. Otherwise chinese bo was as alien as Mars to many. If Dangal is still in the bo race, why so much irritation if its appearance in Turkey or Japan make news here? It is not that every day that President and vice President of one of the most powerful countries watch and praises Dangal. It is not like some star praising himself or herself. Even then some of us played its success down and asked others to do the same. Success is to be enjoyed but not trumpeted ad nauseum, some of us felt. But the sheer antagonism made us retaliate and some could not take it. And so this intemperate lashing against someone who is sharp and witty.

Boxoficeindia is ignoring Dangal and here some want to do the same. But Dangal is still running in some country or other and making news and that cant be ignored.

Suddenly the blog became amateurish, teenage infested for some.

The blog faced its worst phase when someone used to make lewd comments about women members. It used to look like porn site.

This is everyone’s fan club. The blog celebrated Salman’s success and also Akki’s success. When SRK make waves once again with perhaps Dwarf, we will celebrate. I am eagerly waiting for Dwarf as it promises to be somewhat hatke.

Praising Satyam at the expense of Jayshah will not make the former happy. He supports Jay and that fact cant be ignored. And this funny argument about older members and new members. The member who made the comment is also not a old member per se.

It is clear as to who is behaving amateurish and teenagerish!

There is only type of person I dislike more than a partisan, it’s a liar who tries to contaminate and manipulate others to believe a lie.

        Go through every Bahubali box office column and I said things like this;

“I’ll park Bahubali 2 as it is ASTOUNDING in similar ways and right now both films should be getting similar coverage. I hope Dangal does NOT beat Bahubali 2 as I do think overall it’s a bigger deal for Indian films to do better pan India and break a dumb north south divide. But globally can there be any dispute on box office reach for AK films – the star war discussion have had the nail in the coffin for years this just the final moments where the ashes are scattered into the waters.”

“Its a factor among many others. Maybe the biggest factor!

On an aside maybe the biggest factor in Aamir’s film is not him but the film! That’s still the Rajamoulli model everyone is loving right now. I prefer this than rejoicing box office stardom and results of pretty average movies at best. And as an Aamir fan I hope Dangal does not become bigger than Bahubali 2 as it’s not a better film. But if it does I wouldn’t mind seeing the likes of Naveen begging for Aamir to produce films for Hindi ‘superstars’.”

If you had an ounce of integrity you’d apologize or find the comments contrary to this and give me the opportunity to explain as clearly you don’t understand.

To explain – I preferred Bahubali 2 as a film and would prefer it to be biggest grosser – BUT equally I like seeing people like you with egg on their face so if Dangal rose to be #1 all the more power to it.

It’s obvious as when Bahubali 2’s run slowed but Dangal was still going strong in China my comments would be more frequent on Dangal. But I do not need to asterisk each one with comments like above. As you don’t know the difference between *hear and *here I know you can’t understand my comments. And whatever I said post BB2 is playing out. Tubelight has surrendered, numerous articles on how big films are compared to BB2 and Dangal, in general standards *required to be up, films are delayed in response etc. It’s you who said star system is most important or something like that not me.

Quit the bs lying, plain dishonesty is crossing the line.

Like Z, even I felt you dissed bollywood unfairly in favour of BB2 for whatever reasons. I did not go into nuances. It is not about Dangal versus BB2. But belittling bollywood’s entire history in favour of some mumbo jumbo. You must have remembered my own replies. As a telugu speaking person from Andhra Pradesh I was not overwhelmed because I am familiar with the trend and substance though not on such a bigger scale.

Yes I do remember your responses but as they were civil I did not detonate bombs on you. Sure I dismissed Bollywood but not entirely – my main points were post BB2, Bollywood will need to improve. Plain and simple. Cinegoers will definitely judge films differently, it’s wrong but that is what will happen.

There was not a hint in my comment to belittle 80+ years of films, just the last decade or so. I’m not in a position to dismiss 50’s or 70’s etc I have no right too. These comments are strictly from an expectation of audience perspective. If you’ve suddenly been given access to an apple phone and used lesser phones before your quite likely to demand more. And frankly I doubt I was the only one thinking and saying this.

All views can be extreme. As a British Indian who has never watched a non Hindi Indian film – yes I was astonished by Bahubali 2 and 1. It doesn’t mean good pieces of work like Dil Se, Lagaan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan etc are any less. It just means the average Bollywood flick needs to improve – otherwise even a star centric system can crumble against Hollywood or South Indian films.

Bahubali 2 is an extreme occurrence by nature. So such events have repercussions and reverberate quickly. I say this from a business perspective. Bollywood already had the Jungle Book example, BB2 furthers the narrative further. Guys like SRK, Salman, Aamir, Akshay etc are safe. But others can be swallowed up or sucked in by making poor decisions. Seeing things like a recession – things can unravel quickly. In the space of a few years a lot of western countries are making decisions that are insular and unexpected – brexit, Trump etc. Threats or lack of trust can account for a lot.

These are threats on a system and I would bet my arm a lot of head scratching has happened already post BB2.

There are two kinds of Aamir Khan fans

      1. Overenthusiastics like aamirsaurabh, myselfaamir, marcus, etc. I really like them as they primarily talk about Aamir Khan. Sanjana is right about aamirsaurabh being helpful in making us understand the chinese market. He overdid a bit but thats fine as i do it several times myself. Marcus and Sanjana are really nice ones and i can see them as friends if we were knowing each other,.

      2. Undermine other star’s films to make your star look greatest – Here its Jayshah. He writes really well and has the art of mixing the type 1 intelligently with a hidden agenda. Satyam then agrees with him at all counts and that seals the deal for him. However i do not like this approach. I suggested him to keep at his own liking and stop this business of undermining other stars and their films. He however continued to do. Since last one year i have been exposing him. He has been replying violently to my violence but get wounded a bit more. I will keep having a watch over his comments. He escaped in most of June as my comments were going to spam and never appeared here. However i keep trying. Hopefully this one will go thru as today seems to be a lucky day for me.

My request to type 1 good aamir fans is to join me in exposing type 2. A kohli fan need not diss at Dhoni. If one such Kohli fan attacks Dhoni, then its imperative on Kohli fans to show him the door. But this unfortunately happens less.

Sanjana – pls write a similar one for type 2 aamir fans. Just like Type 2 Diabetes, they are dangerous.

  26. First Day Business – Guest Iin London And Mom
    Saturday 08 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mom had a low opening of 2.50 crore nett apprx in Hindi though these numbers are better than English Vinglish which opened in the 2.25 crore nett range in 2012. Hindi Medium released in May had taken a similar opening of 2.50 crore but managed to pick up well and eventually score at the box office. The opening of Mom is actually better than Hindi Medium as that had a tax exemption in Maharashtra from day one so its gross figures are less at 3.20 crore against the 3.40 crore of Mom.

The film will be hoping to have the same trajectory of Hindi Medium or something close to it but tax exemptions and lesser connect in the North will probably come in the way. The film should grow well on Saturday but unless the growth is phenomenal it will remain a low weekend and then it will be about the film coming into its own in the weekdays.

Guest Iin London had a poor opening day of 1.25 crore nett apprx though in UP and Bihar it managed to score above Mom due to a wider release. Its a tough ask to do much from this low number, it should show some growth but will be less than Mom and that wont be good enough. Both the Hindi films (Guest Iin London, Mom) combined grossed around 3,75 crore nett compared to the 6.50 crore nett of Spiderman – Homecoming

Salman Khan vs Akshay Kumar vs Aamir Khan at box office: Who has been most successful in last 3 years?

It’s been quite a long journey for Bollywood. In its 100 years of spreading the cinematic magic, it has witnessed it all. The scandals, the controversial gossip, the much heated debate about promoting nepotism and what not!

But one would undoubtedly agree that despite many flaws, Bollywood still rules the hearts of Indians and millions of fans across the world.

However, the real question is who exactly rules Bollywood? Is it the Khans or the non-Khan megastar: Akshay Kumar?

Unlike the Khans who release at the most one film a year or the likes of Aamir who probably does a film once in two years, Akshay does 4-5 films a year, all of which in the recent past have been huge hits (Baby, Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom and Jolly LLB 2), thereby making him a star who generates high returns from an industry perspective.

But is he really more bankable then the Mr. Perfectionist or the Dabang Khan? Let’s find out what the numbers say.
    2015:
If we look at the statistics of last three years, in 2015, Salman Khan met his fans twice on the big screen. With Bajrangi Bhaijaan, he took the box office by storm.

The movie which released on EID did a massive business of Rs 102.60 crore in its first weekend. Bajrangi Bhaijaan impressed the critics and Salman Khan fans alike.

The movie became the biggest blockbuster for Salman, raking in Rs 626 crores worldwide (including Rs 433 crore in India). In fact, Bajrangi Bhaijaan established new records to achieve, the film took just 9 days to earn around Rs 200 crore from its domestic box office run.

His second film in the same year was Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, which also, very easily eneterd the 100 crore club. Suraj Barjatya and Salman’s reunion worked amazingly well for the box office. The film was a Diwali release and garnered around Rs 400 crore worldwide.

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan did not come with any release that year. However, Akshay Kumar made his presence count. Akshay came up with four films that year, that helped him match Khans at the box office.

In 2015, Akshay Kumar hit the big screen with Baby – a low budget film that earned the word-of-mouth mouth publicity among the audience, and impressed critics too. His other releases were Brothers, Gabbar is Back and Singh is Bliing.

Following are the lifetimne collection of Akshay’s releases in 2015

Baby: Inspite of the rave reviews, the film managed to earn Rs 96 crore.
Gabbar is Back: The film failed to impress the experts but audience showered their love on Kumar. The movie earned Rs 88 Crore in India and at international screens it earned Rs 15 crore. Its total lifetime collection stands at Rs 103 crore.
Brothers: The film tanked at the box office. The film wreleasd on 3450 screens under the banner of Dharma Productions. With an opening of Rs 15 crore, the film has a lifetime collection of Rs 106 crore.
Singh is Bliing: With a romcom, Akshay hit the screens again and did not disappoint his fans. The film became the biggest hit of 2015 for Kumar. It did a total business of Rs 117 crore.

    2016:

Salman Khan: With a massive opening on the first two days with Rs 73.74 crores, Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, created a storm at the box office.

The film became Bollywood’s sixth highest hit ever on the international box office after Dhoom 3 (Rs 542 crore), Baahubali (Rs 600 crore), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 626 crore) and PK (Rs 792 crore).

With a budget of 90 crore, in just 12 days of its release, the film earned more than Rs 500 crore worldwide.

Aamir Khan: The only film with which Aamir Khan released was Dangal , and that till today is creating headlines! The movie is a biopic of the former Indian wrestler Mahavir Phogat who trains his daughters to become world-class wrestlers — a story which resonated well with the Indian audience, generating over Rs 385 crore ticket sales upon its release.

Dangal has collected Rs 1864 crore in worldwide collections and is rapidly moving close to the Rs 2,000-crore collection mark.
It earned around Rs 511 crore in India. Aamir Khan’s PK had earned around Rs 350 crore at the Indian box office.

In April, Aamir and Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari were in China to promote the film, which officially opened this year’s edition of the Beijing International Film Festival.

In China, which has nearly 40,000 screens, Dangal released as Shuai Jiao Baba, which means “Let’s Wrestle, Dad”.

Akshay Kumar: As the two Khans were creating Tsunami with their movie collections, Akshay Kumar in 2016, came up with three releases. He started his year with Airlift.

Based on the real-life conflict and bloodshed that took place 25 years ago in Kuwait, Akshay Kumar’s Airlift collected amount worth of Rs 127.8 crore. The film got applauded by not just the audience but received thumbs up from the critics as well. The overall budget of the film was just Rs 30 crore.

After Airlift, he was seen in multistarrer Housefull 3, with around 150 crore of lifetime collections, the film was Akshay Kumar’s second consecutive 100 crore grosser after Airlift.

Despite being a hit, Housefull 3 was a disappointment as the movie didn’t perform well in single screens and mass centres.
ALSO READ: What 2,000 crore! Brand Baahubali is bigger than Dangal. Here’s why
The movie, however, was Akshay Kumar’s fifth highest grosser after Rowdy Rathore, Airlift, Holiday and Housefull 2.

Akshay’s third 2016 release was Rustom. After donning a role of Ranjiv Katyal in Airlift, Akshay Kumar in his next flick acted as a navy officer, Rustom Powri. Made in a budget of Rs 40 crore, it failed to win appreciation from the experts but managed to enter into Bollywood’s big ‘100-crore club’. The movie did a total business of Rs 127.13 crore.

    2017:

As we are halfway through 2017, let’s discuss the current year as well.

Salman Khan’s much-awaited film Tubelight hit the screens last month, as the Kabir Khan and Salman duo was expecting a repeat of Bajrangi Bhaaijan, the film fizzled out at the box office.

According to Box Office India report, Tubelight had a huge drop in collections in its second weekend as it grossed Rs 7.50 crore net and took its 10-day business to Rs 110 crore net.

The report also said that the film would probably be out of most theatres in two weeks and was likely to stay short of the Rs 120 crore net mark with final business probably falling in Rs 115-116 crore net range.

As 2017 is yet to witness an Aamir Khan film, with Jolly LLB 2 and Naam Shabaana, Akshay Kumar has already marked his presence in the theatres.

Jolly LLB 2 entertained the masses in February. So far, it has turned out to be one of the biggest hits of 2017. Akshay Kumar who believes in completing a film in 40-45 days has apparently opted for 80% profit sharing ratio in Jolly LLB 2’s collection, according to a report published in Bollywood Hungama.

The film has collected Rs 114.47crore. However, the final amount stands at Rs 111.95 crore after cutting all costs.

His another film, Naam Shabana was a prequel to 2015 hit film, Baby. It earned 18.76 crores in the first weekend. But after that, it failed to sustain at the box office. The movie’s lifetime collection, according to some media reports are said to be around Rs 56 crore.

The budget of Naam Shabana was too high for a film with no big stars. Probably the makers were confident that the prequel factor and Akshay Kumar’s cameo will give a big boost to the movie but, that didn’t happen.

Akshay is now coming up with his third film, Toilet-Ek Prem Katha which is reportedly due for release on August 11. As the movie is already creating buzz over its concept, which promotes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Clean India Programe, trade experts have sky high expectations from it.

    Conclusion:
As the numbers speak, Akshay with 4-5 releases every year is certainly a ‘play-safe’ bet for the directors, however, Dangal with a worldwide whopping collection of 1,869 crore has clearly made Aamir Khan the king of box office.

What are some of the most socially impactful Bollywood movies?
My idea of a sensible movie is one that will:
Leave an impact on the society for a longer time.
Try to make society a better place to live.

A biopic like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or an awesome story like Airlift are very well-made movies. You will appreciate the performance, direction and probably everything in these movies. They are great biopics (MS Dhoni) but not really sensible.

The Ohh My God, Dangal, Munnabhai series, Swades, and Taare Zameen Par — those are sensible movies that I am talking about. The most recent is Dangal.

It portrayed how one can still live a life that will be remembered by everyone, despite having a short life.

The entire movie makes you feel good about yourself. Will not go into acting as i dont think anyone has any doubt.

Zindagi Kaisi Hai paheli haai…kabhi to hassaye…kabhi yeh rulaaye.

      The lyrics sums it up.

The movie starts as a flashback, where Amitabh bachan is giving a winners speech while getting the best writer for the year award , based on his diary entries from the day Anand entered his life.

From there the story travels too and fro, initially they start with common friend rajesh deo, asking rajesh why he came earlier than scheduled time, rajesh says some thing like, I always reach earlier than necessary, it’s only somewhere at the end, real reason slips out.. He left his old city the day his gf was getting married!

Ditto, how the director explains the silence between the bolte kyu nahi mujhse and babu moshai..track!

      It’s well handled.

All the characters from ramesh deo, to Seema deo, to lalita Pawar, to Amitabh bachchan, his loyal servant, his girlfriend, her mom, Dara Singh, Johny Walker, the mauni baba….. All have got meaty scenes.

There is not a single scene in the whole movie, that is extra or, infructious!

And plus it has wonderful soulful numbers like,
      2. kahi door jab din dhal Jai,
      3. Na jiya lage Na,

Personally I’ll say this. I joined NG in 2006. The year had RDB, Fanaa, KANK, Krish, Don/Jaane-man/D2 plus Omkara and LRM. And probably other films I’ve missed out. There were just phenomenal levels of writing. The blog had outside of this group here Abzee, Akshay, GF, Rangan, Aarkayne and many others. It’s also true that multiplex era kicked of big time too so along with high volume of writing came lots of heated box office debates.

Absolutely a lot of quality has left but also that sequence of films with [golmaal, gangster, family, being Cyrus, bhagam bhag, HKDK, Kabul Express, Khoshla Ka Ghosla, Malamaal Weekly, Phil Hera Pheri, taxi no. 9921, Umrao Jaan, vivah, Woh Lamhe] to add has reduced. Anyone here long enough should be able to see we’ve lost quality writing but the number of ‘reviewable’ films have reduced. Add to this back then a lot of regional movies were reviewed too.

Coincide this with the box office clarity not getting better you simply end up with more discussion on box office than films.

In any case everyone is accountable and can change it. Otherwise one starts to stop or moderator discussions. Anyway NG turned into whatever it did and SS was born.

Losing quality writing is not great but if films are not stacking up to talk about not sure what can be expected. Bahubali 2 had lots of reviews.

Forget politics. Those are personal battles that are irrelevant for me at least. I’ll happily buy Naveen a drink outside the blog or he can buy me a Michelin 5* meal for his verbal abuse for years! SS is successful as many jumped ship and NG was poorly managed to an extent. Here the owner is present as humanly possible so live moderation happens as much as humanly possible.

It’s a film blog and if the film industry is pretty much meandering blogs will too. Wherever quality writers are I’m sure they are doing fine and what floats their boat. Rangan a prime example. Even Joginder who writes for BH or Tango Glamsham. People move on and wish them the best.

Glad someonecame up with this point. Thebox office debates do get tiring after a while, especially when thats all one discusses all through the day and drowns discussions on a films merits and demerits take a backseat.

rangan, mayank shekhar and Raja Sen are some film connoisseurs which hardly discuss the box office. Their references and comparisons between similar films are a trear to right. Whether one agrees with their viewpoints is a different matter. But its so much fun to read inside stories, trivia, the making and and how a particular film has held up over the years. Beyond these three and an occasional blogger, i dont find any hondi film reviewer taking pains to take pains building a cult around a film. If there was, lesser known brilliant films that now stay completely forgotten must have somehow been revived.

Hindi movies need to move out of its stereotypical, simplistic & cliched ridden themes & at least “try” to attempt something novel filled with innovative ideas to whet the appetite of cine-goers in the post Baahubali world as scenario has changed drastically after the “humongous success” of Baahubali both content-wise & spectcle-wise & especially when the audiences have choices galore in the other forms of entertainment through smartphones with data prices hitting the rock bottom & other innumerable avenues at just 1/10 or lesser cost than the movie tickets which has changed cinema from an indispensable & affordable entertainment medium to a luxurious mode of entertainment. It’s a wake up moment for the industry to up the ante as time is ripe & opportune for mega ventures in terms of imagination & scale both to scale newer & seemingly insurmountable heights despite the initial stumbles & hiccups en route to finally achieve the success or just keep pretending as if everything is fine & smooth & keep treading the same formulaic path!!

Preferred Rajesh Khanna movies and Raj Kapoor movies for music only. SJ, SD, C.Ramchandra, Naushad, Salil Chaudhury, Hemant Kumar of those days. Nadeem Shravan, Jatin Lalit carried the melody legacy to some extent and then they faltered. The onslaught of BB2 or Hollywood can never diminish the vintage music of bollywood for me.

      • If you’re up for it, try listening to Rafis songs from 40s to early 80s.

I was a die hard fan of Mukesh (due to loving Raj Kapoor) and then Kishore and didn’t think much of Rafi until someblody made me sit and listen to a song. I couldn’t believe the difference between him and all other singers. Not only he had a great voice but the way words are pronounced, sung based on if the song is johny walker or dilip kumar or rishi kapoor. Just amazing, be it bhajan, qawali, sad, romantic, patriotic, fast songs, etc…

        • For the past few months my husband and I have been listening to the Rafi cover versions of Anil Bajpai; on YouTube, performances at private parties, or from stage shows. He does great justice to Rafi and in fact has his own charm. Try out Bajpai’s Rafi.

  36. Aim for the stars: Do Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan feel trapped in their public image?

(Editor’s note: With Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan and Salman Khan’s Tubelight not quite hitting the mark in terms of box office success, there are some crucial question we found ourselves thinking about. Is a movie-star bound by his/her own image? What happens when stars experiment, and give their fans something ‘new’? What happens when their experiments fail and how do the stars themselves react to this failure? This is part one of a two part analysis on this very idea — what is bigger, the star or the image of the star?)

Bollywood is something we all have consumed, admired and aspired for all our life.

Be it as a child, when you wanted to be heroic, or while proposing to your beau with enough dialogues to make them melt, or also watching your favourite film on TV for the umpteenth time. There’s no escaping hindi films.

We all have awed and had our jaw drop when stupendous stars walk out of their spic-n-span cars with their entourage. A thought that most of us have: what a life these stars live!

But beneath the surface of glitter and glamour, there is a person who is petrified of walking alone. Everything we see is an armour, which shields them from what a nightmare one failure can be.

I remember meeting with Shah Rukh Khan right after Raees hit the theatres and initial buzz claimed that the film was good. The first thing I had to ask him was if he was relieved. He smiled at me, and said, “ When someone has been working for a very long time, what happens is that they are already in the minds of the people. I meet mothers and they tell me that their second child also loves me. If you look at all my films historically, they open very well as a lot of people come very excited to see the film. Now that causes two problems for me personally. When so many people are coming to watch my film, I hope and wish that I can give most people what they have come for. And secondly, if I am doing the same thing again and again, I start having problems with that as an actor.”

He furthered, “You know, if you give the audience something new and it doesn’t work like Fan, I get heartbroken, not discouraged. But if you are trying to do something new and it works, the happiness just doubles. I have been in the business for a very long time, so I can sense whether people are liking the film or not. Before the release of a film, I keep sitting on the black sofa at my house, my family knows what I am going through that time. I keep sitting on it and don’t do anything. No phone, no TV and I only meet my kids that time.”

Having been the boss of Indian Cinema for the last two and a half decades, how does one stay humble and vulnerable when you have everything at the hit of a button?
“Strangely, I know my life will be remembered by the work I do. Everything else will take second set to it. I really appreciate the fact that my family understands it. I am a public figure, I have to do what I have to do. Even if I don’t take my problems home, my family has to bear them. My daughter calls me once or twice a week, my son calls me once in two weeks but in the last four days as the film during the release of the film, my children have called me multiple times in a day and strangely I missed the calls as I wasn’t expecting them. I know they will just call to ask how I am or to tell where they are but I know in their mind they know that papa’s film is releasing and we need to be with him,” he said.

But the fact remains that one is tied down by image they make for themselves.

SRK has often said that he is the master slave to the image of Shah Rukh Khan. But is there any way out when you want to satisfy the artist in you?
He ponders over it and tells me, “If you have been working for so long, then the responsibility on you increases. I always say that love is unconditional and I believe in it genuinely. When I go back home after failure or success, the love is there as it is unconditional. So I feel that people love me so much that if by mistake I don’t do something very good, they will still love me. They know that there is no selfish reason behind it, but I was just trying and when I will do something correctly, they will love me the same. That is why I have strength to try out certain things. I feel a lot of pain when something doesn’t go right especially when I decide to do something different.”

It all boils down to how responsible these stalwarts feel about their stardom. They say that fans are the ones who take the honest decision of creating or bursting the bubble, do the stars believe this too?

Fan favourite Salman Khan had once told me how the last word has to be your fans and not yours.

Would one be wrong to assume that Tubelight appears to be have been inspired by Bajrangi Bhaijaan but with Salman Khan as the little Pakistani girl who needs to be saved?
    Salman Khan in Tubelight.
“When someone is paying money, you need to see good things. Whatever is happening in my life is going to happen in my life, is my problem. What are you coming to see? A great movie right? You have come to see entertainment, and that is my duty to keep my problems aside and give you what you have come for. I have to deliver. Deliverance is my thing towards my fans. I have a huge responsibility towards them and no matter what stress I am going through, it is not going to stop me from doing my work and whatever I do for my fans,” said Salman.

But how does the artist survive in the middle of the rat race and the fans? The bubble does make you a slave and all you do is obey to what your super star alias tells you to do.

They say an artist is a wanderer but in Bollywood where everything is so mechanical, is he really wandering?

Stay tuned for part two, on Sunday, 9 July 2017.

    • Prabhudheva confirms directing Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’
It’s final. Prabhudheva will direct the third instalment of Salman Khan’s whacky exploits as the eccentric cop Chulbul Pandey. The decision to not let Arbaaz Khan direct Dabangg 3 was taken by Arbaaz himself.

Says a source close to Salman, “Arbaaz wiped his hands off the franchise after directing the second instalment. In fact, he was not supposed to direct the second Dabangg film either. Arbaaz came on board only after there was a fallout with Abhinav Kashyap, who had directed Dabangg.”

Salman has now asked his old friend Prabhudheva to step in as the director of Dabangg 3. Prabhudheva fits the Dabangg bill on several counts. Salman and Prabhu go back a long way. In 2008, Prabhu directed

Salman in Wanted, which was a sort of comeback for the actor after a spate of flops. Also, Prabhudheva understands the zany mood of Dabangg better than any director. Says Prabhu, “I will do any film that Salman sir asks me to. Nobody says no to him.”

Homecoming Strong On Day Two – GIL Has Growth

    Box Office India Trade Network

Spiderman – Homecoming had a very good second day as collections were around the 10 crore nett mark with the film showing huge growth of 50%. Hollywood releases have only reached the 10 crore nett mark in a day only ten times. Also no Spiderman film prior to this has ever grossed 10 crore nett in a single day. The collections of Spiderman – The Homecoming are as follows

    Thursday – 2,00,00,000

    Friday – 6,75,00,000

    Saturday – 10,00,00,000

    Grand Total – 18,75,00,000

Guest In London managed to show good growth of 40% on day two although collections are just too low. The film was up 40% on Saturday which is actually good growth but it had to be starting around the 2 crore nett mark rather than the 1.25 crore nett mark. The collections of Guest Iin London are as follows.

    Friday – 1,25,00,000

    Saturday – 1,75,00,000

    Total – 3,00,00,000

  38. Mom Has Huge Growth On Second Day
    Sunday 09 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mom (Hindi) showed huge growth of around 65% on its second day as it grossed a decent 4.75 crore nett. The growth is more on Saturday than Hindi Medium released a few weeks back. Though it has to be noted that Mom does have a wider release than that film. The film doubled its collections in many multiplexes across the country. The weekend is still going to remain low but the trend is there for the film to make up ground over the weekdays. The Saturday growth is the best seen this year out of all the main releases. The collections of Mom for the first two days are as follows.

    Friday – 3,00,00,000

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000

    Total – 7,75,00,000

    Grand Total – 18,75,00,000

The film is scoring very well in Mumbai circuit with the circuit contributing around 45%. The film is actually a Delhi based though the film has a feel of a Mumbai film. If North India was to come on board over the weekdays for this film then it will do good business and have a good 3-4 week run.

I have been binge-watching THE AMERICANS for the past month, and, as always, continue to be stunned by the intercourse of music and story-telling that’s on display. A mediocre HALT & CATCH FIRE has a fantastic collection of pop-culture hits from the ’80s.

THE AMERICANS meanwhile takes it to a whole new level with their fantastic usage of the ’80s music..

Consider this music video by PETE TOWNSHEND..It literally takes the metaphor of HOLLYWOOD being a melting pot for sex and violence to a new level..In that particular episode, Mr. Rahul Khanna [who plays a Pakistani, what else?] banging away a white woman to glory while Keri Russel’s Elizabeth Jennings swims in a swimming pool and murders a ISI official above the pay grade of Rahul Khanna’s Yousef..

Anil Kapoor And Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are all set to start shooting for their forthcoming film Fanney Khan from August end.

KriArj Entertainment has joined hands with T-Series for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Fanney Khan! The film stars Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead, who have previously shared screen space in Subhash Ghai’s 1999 musical, Taal. Aishwarya and Anil Kapoor are now set to reunite after 18 years for Fanney Khan, which will release in April 2018.

The musical-drama showcases the lead actors in a very distinct avatar. Anil plays the titular character of a father to a struggling singer. Aishwarya will be seen in the avatar of a glamorous singer who will win hearts with her positivity and freshness. However, Aish and Anil will reportedly not be romancing on-screen.

Fanney Khan also marks the directorial debut of Atul Manjrekar. The film will be entirely shot in Mumbai. The movie was initially expected to be the Hindi adaptation of the English and Dutch film Everybody’s Famous! However, fresh reports suggest that the makers have made considerable changes to the script thus turning it into a new one.

  43. This film is likely to revolve around a 17-year-old aspiring singer, whose career takes off once her unemployed father kidnaps the top singer of the country. The original film, Dominique Deruddere’s 2000 Dutch release Everybody’s Famous, was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the 73rd Academy Awards.

Speaking to The Times of India, Kapoor said, “Fanney Khan is an exciting journey for me. I have always admired Aishwarya’s craft and it’ll be interesting to work with her again, after so long. This is also my first project with KriArj Entertainment.”

He adds, “What makes the [film’s] partnership with T-Series even more significant is the fact that music plays an important role in the story, which revolves around the life of an aspiring musician. Perhaps the most fun and gratifying part of the film is developing Fanney Khan’s character. He is lovably flawed and celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary even as his life goes through bizarre twists and turns.”

The film will be co-produced by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Prernaa Arora’s KriArj Entertainment. Pinkvilla quotes Arora as saying, “The team starts building the set in Mumbai next month and Anil will kick off shooting in the first week of August. Aishwarya joins him by the month-end and the film will wrap up in a start-to-finish schedule by October.”

    News18.com
    Updated:July 9, 2017, 11:23 AM IST

Soon after veteran actor Govinda took to Twitter to clarify his stand on his role being cut from Jagga Jasoos, the film’s actor and producer Ranbir Kapoor has openly apologised to his senior.

When Ranbir was asked about the whole incident in an interview, the actor very maturely answered and said that it was unfortunate that they had to chop off Govinda’s track and took full responsibility for his and Basu’s mistake.

Kapoor was reported as saying, “Unfortunately the entire track has been chopped off; it is our fault, Basu and mine. We had started this film very prematurely, without a complete script. The character had completely changed, and the film was taking so long. It is very irresponsible, and very unfair to cast a great legend like Govinda and not give justice to his role. It is very unfortunate the way things panned out. We are apologetic, but it is for the best for the film that we had to cut that track out.”

Recently, Govinda took to Twitter and expressed his disappointment over the fact that his part was not retained in the film’s final edit. Govinda wrote that he did his job as an actor and if the director wasn’t happy, it’s completely his call.

There were various negative stories around Govinda’s unprofessionalism on sets and clarifying them all he added that he did the film despite being unwell and that’s not how he wanted things to happen.

  48. Rajamouli Says Talking About Sridevi Rejecting Baahubali Was A ‘Mistake’
“That’s a mistake. And I regret it,” said Rajamouli

    http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/rajamouli-says-talking-about-sridevi-rejecting-baahubali-was-a-mistake-1722400?pfrom=home-topstories

It was last month when Sridevi said that she was upset with what Baahubali director S S Rajamouli said about her rejecting the blockbuster magnum opus. Now, the filmmaker has responded in an interview to DNA, saying he “regrets” having shared the internal details of Team Baahubali’s encounter with the veteran actress. The makers of Baahubali had approached Sridevi for the role of Rajmata Shivagami, which was ultimately played by South actress Ramya Krishnan to much critical acclaim. Sridevi, 53, was no longer considered after she allegedly made certain starry demands – a claim which has been denied by the actress.

In his interview to DNA, Rajamouli appeared to not deny what was said before but said he could have avoided talking about Sridevi. “As for whose version to believe, I guess it is for people to decide. But one thing is for sure. I shouldn’t have discussed the details on a public platform. That’s a mistake. And I regret it,” said the 43-year-old filmmaker.

Rajamouli also commented on the position Sridevi holds in the film industry. “I have huge respect for Sridevi ji as a flag-bearer of the southern film industries in Mumbai for many years. I wish her all the best. And I wish Mom a big success as the trailer looks very intriguing and promising,” he told DNA. Sridevi’s MOM hit theatres on July 7.

In May, Rajamouli was speaking on a regional TV chat show, when he said: “After hearing series of wishes from her (Sridevi), our team got fed up. We also thought that it would be above our budget to meet her demands. Then we approached Ramya Krishnan and she proved herself fantastic and we now feel, we were lucky that we dropped the idea of having Sridevi in our film,” as quoted by Times Of India.

A month later, Sridevi told channel NTV Telugu that Rajamouli’s claims were shocking: “I was shocked and hurt by his interview. Rajamouli is a calm and dignified person. I was very happy to work with him. But, the way he spoke about the issue made me feel very sad.”

Previously, reports about Sridevi’s alleged starry claims ranging from she demanded a salary of Rs. 6 crore to asking for the use of an entire floor of a five-star hotel did the rounds on the Internet. In her interview to NTV Telugu, Sridevi added, “People would have sent me packing if I was like that. I don’t know if the producer wrongly told Rajamouli that I made all these demands, but it is not in good taste to speak like this.”

Meanwhile, MOM is Sridevi’s first Bollywood film after Gauri Shinde’s 2012 movie English Vinglish. Rajamouli released his Baahubali 2 in theatres on April 28 and within weeks, the film redefined box office history becoming the first Indian film to ever make Rs. 1500 crore.

I also agree with Rajamouli that Ramya was perfect for Rajmata Shivagami in Baahubali and Sridevi is too weak and frail to have pulled it off. Ramya aced it perfectly.

  51. No Confrontation Scene Between Katrina & Anushka In SRK’s Dwarf Film?

The trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma are back after 2012’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan in Aanand L. Rai’s Dwarf Film.

But there is a huge twist in the upcoming mega budget movie.

As per the reports of a leading daily, the reliable source suggests that “Jab Tak Hai Jaan had an important confrontation scene between Anushka and Katrina’s characters. However, in their next untitled film, the two actresses only have scenes with SRK, and not with each other. The story is designed in such a way that one character enters when the other exits from SRK’s life. They don’t meet in the film.”

The report further states, “In the movie, Anushka plays a character, who is in love with Shah Rukh and is an ordinary village girl. SRK’s character is in love with Katrina, who plays an actress in the film. The story has been altered a lot from its first script to now, and there is absolutely no interaction between the two ladies.”

The untitled film is touted to be one of the most expensive Bollywood projects ever. SRK has set up an office especially for this film with Anand L. Rai due to the technical requirements.

“It is a movie about a vertically challenged special person. I enjoyed while shooting for the film. I think technically these kinds of films should be made in India. I feel proud that my team is doing that,” said Shah Rukh.

Tigmanshu Dhulia will portray SRK’s father in the film, while Salman will be seen in a special dance number.

Produced under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment and Colour Yellow Productions, the film will hit screens in December 2018.

In 2007, Vipul Shah gave us an amazing film Namastey London which starred Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the leads. Since then fans have been anxiously waiting for a sequel and it looks like we will be getting one soon. The film had a fantastic box-office run which prompted director Vipul Shah to announce a sequel. The sequel is to be named Namaste England.

The buzz is that the sequel will have everything new, from the story to the lead actors. According to the recent rumors, Arjun Kapoor has replaced Akshay Kumar in the sequel to the film.

The report read, “Arjun was keen because the franchise provides a unique perspective on how Indians are looked at internationally and vice versa. But he wanted to make sure that Akshay had no problems about the franchise moving forward without him, before signing on the dotted line. Last month, Akshay and Vipul who have been close friends and have collaborated on a dozen films over the last two decades, mutually agreed to go ahead with Arjun. The film will roll early 2018 and like the original will be shot in Punjab and the UK.”

Recently during friends gather, someone kept DZ on NF and most of them who didn’t see it earlier couldn’t even concentrate on the movie and they switched in 30 mins(though we were constantly talking). It is very subtle movie and doesn’t grab you so unless you watch will full concentration like in cinema, you will never get interested. It is not a movie you can watch on TV with ads or NF doing multiple tasks at once. I watched it first day in big screen and liked it very much but couldn’t get interest to watch it again after that whenever it comes on TV or NF.

Boney Kapoor is worried why no one brought the Pakistani actors discussion during Mom’s release and little controversy would have helped the movie. Now the movie is released, it is better to do some controversy and keep it in news for 1-2 weeks so collections can come and comes this video.

Mom – a revenge thriller that thrills with good performances all-round. Worth a watch – quickly gets into story, ultimately an emotional mother daughter backdrop with a good BGM.

    SPOILERS
Sridevi once again in role where she has to prove herself to a loved one. Here rather than not knowing English she plays a teacher and mother. Quickly into the film it’s obvious she is not her daughter’s maternal mother but she persists with unconditional love with just pure rudeness as a response. One feels nothing for her daughter until she’s gang raped. The legal system fails the family so Mom takes the law into her own hands with the help of Nawazuddin Siddiqui (unrecognisable at first glimpse). Her revenge is quite extreme and extensively thought out; one man loses his manhood and kills himself, another is framed for the attempted poisoning of his brother (who ends up dead as he is one of the rapists himself but is a vegetable after cyanide poisons his protein shake), the last one is the finale where the good cop (Akshaye Khanna) demands Sridevi kill him. In seeing this momentous act of motherhood, the daughter loves Mom finally.
    END

A decent film at best – at times it’s obvious some form of reconciliation will occur but it is a torture to watch a daughter simply so repellent of Mom until the end where Mom needs to kill for justice. The bad guys are not terrifying in any sense. Akshaye Khanna’s role is minimal but good to watch. The daughter looks a little like Kareena Kapoor – another reason why I couldn’t like her character at all.

        • they’ve always been a propaganda operation. Even the whole ‘footfalls’ things (something they came up with relatively recently) is itself a dishonest one even in the same historic sense. The Bombay box office was at its peak in the 70s but if one wants to look a somewhat longer arc from roughly the mid-60s to the early 80s. In the 70s Bombay cinema did better per capita than at any other point in Hindi history. Tamil cinema for instance had already done this even in the 50s but that wasn’t the case for Bombay. Of course the penetration of Tamil cinema was probably the greatest historically speaking for political reasons as well (or it was fostered a certain way not least for these reasons) but that’s another discussion. Even today we see how Tamil/Telugu still does better in the same sense than Hindi. Even looking at the big grossers. Getting back to the footfalls point if you did it sanely (relative to population) the top 50 films (at the very least) would belong to the 70s. Then there would be exceptions from other ages like Mother India or MeA or Awara or whatever. In the 90s and beyond it’s certainly fair to say that HAHK or Gadar have had the most footfalls in that order. RH is probably next on that list. There might not be another film one could include on that list because everything else is driven by major metro or multiplex business. These days the masala films do well in small centers, often aided by newer multiplexes, but even when not they just don’t last as long. To repeat an old point and also to use Aamir’s films as examples (most of which aren’t in the audience-maximizing genres) and also using the analogy of Tamil-Telugu cinema a big commercial movie from Bollywood with the right stars or production house or whatever should be breaching 400 crores routinely and even 500 ought to be possible for the biggest films. I’m not even getting into truly remarkable successes. But Bollywood isn’t even doing the trending it did for most of the last decade (on the successes). The standards are similarly lowered for everything else too. Mostly for partisan reasons. And then you have BOI in their bubble. But then there are enough takers for their narrative.

Very cunning way to not include DDLJ there. Oh, I get it DDLJ ran just in multiplexes in 1995. Lol. This is very unbiased opinion and others have biased opinions.

          Like

        • because DDLJ almost certainly did not have as many footfalls. It was a metro-heavy film. For instance RH grossed a bit more than KKHH. What film do you think had more footfalls? Now DDLJ grossed a lot more than KKHH/RH. However when you have a film doing hugely well in parts of the country where tickets are the price of peanuts you need something extraordinarily historic to make up the difference. Take Gadar. It did historically in N India (not as extraordinarily everywhere else but still it was minimally very successful universally), yet it’s gross is somewhere in the DDLJ range. Maybe 10-15% higher. But DDLJ released half a decade earlier. You can’t make up in small town India the grosses of major metros (let alone multiplexes). Because Gadar wasn’t quite historic in major metros across India even in a relative sense barring some North Indian centers. Getting back to the 90s HAHK obviously had the most footfalls, did 70-100 crores (depending on who you believe, and all kinds of numbers have been thrown out about this one.. but even the lower end would still make it historic). Now DDLJ was the biggest grosser after this in that decade (Leaving aside inflation debates for the moment) but it’s extremely unlikely (though not impossible) that it had more footfalls than RH (you basically have roughly, 60 vs 45). Incidentally in the multiplex era the problems multiply because not only do multiplexes have the ticket prices, repeat viewing advantage (people going to these theaters can spend more), they also have various kinds of tax exemptions (most multiplexes very low or non-existent taxes in the first 5-10 years of their coming up). And so the gross looks even more lopsided. The gross/net differential is not as wide as it would be under a proper taxation regime. Guess what stars and films were prospering most in these years! RH incidentally was the most ignored film in certain ways because it was too old-fashioned and not cool enough for the media. everyone accepted it as a blockbuster but it was a film that embarrassed people. Meanwhile Rangeela with a fraction of the gross got a huge amount of attention because it was of course the epitome of cool at that point. In those days if you did decently in big cities or very well and more or less nothing elsewhere you got a DTPH. If you did the opposite you got Ghulam or Sarfarosh. When you have a segmented market you get very unequal results. This is very different from Hollywood where the market doesn’t favor any particular genre or cater to particular audience sensibilities in terms of purchasing power or genres tied to audiences with bigger wallets and sociologically defined a certain way. Bombay too wasn’t this way till the Yashraj age and since then it has become a lot better once again. Because masala and some of these genres have broken through into the multiplexes. As a result the purely romantic genres are almost always left behind. When KHNH released it’s pretty solid performance in major metros made it seem like a rather successful film. Today the same sort of gross seems very poor because others are doing much more. It wasn’t that great even then but at least no one was really doing much better (in a couple of years that changed). I’ll lastly end with an Aamir example (can’t resist it). While 3I did a lot more than Ghajini the differential isn’t as great as that 100 crores makes it seem. It’s still huge but Ghajini could have added at least 20 crores had it been loved in the multiplexes as much as it was loved in smaller towns. That portion of its gross is underrepresented.

There was hardly any proof or talk about DDLJ running more in metros(that term didn’t even exists back then) than interiors. One can guess that RH would have done more in interiors but to say with surety is not possible. One can easily figure out that KKHH was more metro centric but clubbing KKHH and DDLJ together is very loose debate.

The arrow misses the mark by a huge margin!!

          Like

        • I didn’t say DDLJ was KHNH! Obviously it did well in a lot of places. The question always is: what kind of market drives the gross? As for surety funny… you seem to be pretty sure about every other film that releases and how much it can or cannot run, etc etc. As for talk they weren’t saying metro-centric for a number of films that didn’t do half as well as DDLJ. So I wouldn’t go by just talk. By the way judging by the claims you’re making here it’s even possible that RH and DDLJ did equally well in exactly the same sorts of centers! Hey who knows..!

but check out that link MUnna provided from BOI (people love the site after all) and see what they claim. That RH does 9-10 cr per major territory, DDLJ does less than this everywhere except for Bombay where it does 14 crores. Similarly KKHH did 12 from Bombay and 7-7.5 elsewhere. Of course some of these averages seem a bit too neat to be claimed across the board but the point is the Bombay territory is about 40% of the market. Certainly was in the 90s and you can see how the city of Bombay and the suburbs were driving this gross. RH on the other hand is not advantaged in the same way because it wasn’t as huge in places like Bombay. And then if one went territory by territory one would get a similar result. DDLJ would probably be huge in metros everywhere and alright elsewhere while with RH it would be not exactly the opposite but a much different picture. Of course if you had the multiplex advantage then that came about some years later there would be a truly big differential between DDLJ and RH. Or even between KKHH and RH.

          Like

        • Even one assumes that RH has actually more footfalls than DDLJ, it will still be very marginal and to say no other films comes near it clear bias. Clearly undermining DDLJ’s achievement and then clubbing it with KKHH and calling it metro hit. Hilarious biased argument!

Incidentally not quite sure why you’re offended by the KKHH comparison. It’s SRK’s most successful film in that genre other than DDLJ. Nothing else is even close. It didn’t do as much as DDLJ but was very successful otherwise.

Incidentally if you follow that BOI link Munna has provided (and since so many folks love BOI) DDLJ’s gross is only 1 crore more than RH’s. And it’s 6 cr ahead of KKHH. So again hardly an unfair comparison.

Seriously Master – you agree with this new era records???

          Liked by 1 person

        • Agree or not is not the point. Also this is not BOI article but producers are claiming. For the current times, 10 crores footfalls is a HUGE HUGE deal and I don’t know how can one bring 70’s movies in the discussion here. Technically it may not the first to cross 10 crores but for the current situation it is.

I can give you another better example. Mahabharat of 80’s was the highest TRP in Indian movie history and worldwide that record will never be broken. The TRP was consistently over 90% and on some episode even broke then 96% mark. Yes we do know the reason that Indian TV was pretty new and there was just 1 channel that time. Similarly the current top TRPs in TV are around 3 or 4% and some of them reach 6-7% but it is below 10(the method has changed). But the point is if today someone makes a TV series and it blows away all the records of TRP and does 30% and producers announce that it is the first one to do so. Technically it is not right but doesn’t mean you will start bringing Mahabharat of 80’s or Ramayan of 80’s to the discussion. That era is different and so is the current one and this one broke the records of the current era.

So, why does the Bahubali 10 crores is big deal? Movie watching has been reduced after the TV has launched in 80’s. Whole 80’s decade was impacted and then slowly the movies got back the audience in late 80’s and from 1994 the history has been revamped. You can’t compare the movie footfalls directly from 70’s to the current phase where movies was the only entertainment and now you have every other entertainment available. You won’t see 10 crores footfalls again n again and it may never happen as well.

I think folks want to just comment if someone is directly attacking Bachchan or 70’s cinema and this is not even a BOI claim. If producers claim it has crossed 10 crores, what is there to even debate or discuss here, I don’t get it.

        • Some points I can agree with but blatant ignorance of past? One cannot just pick an arbitrary date of convenience.

Btw what happened in India happens everywhere in the world – no other country draws a line in the sand and restarts the ticker like this.

Ratings in UK are rarely compared to 90’s but in a list of record ratings they are never conveniniently ignored. A record is a record irrelevant of time.

We still look at Bradman’s 99 average not gently push it away to satisfy a narrative for today. In this case we may as well set the line in the sand post ODI cricket.

Ignorance of this kind if used is just silly. 10 CR today is outstanding but simply put it won’t be a factual record. Ignoring facts is pretty ignorant. What’s Dangal’s FF including China? The claim itself as so hard to prove! Even the Sholay claim is hard to prove.

Even 1994 to now so many changes, if anything the line should be 2006 – when multiplex growth and inflation rose hugely.

One day FF will be 1 CR – does it mean we forget 90’s?

          Like

        • Genuinely a recalibration will encompass every film adjusted accordingly and than your narrative applied to explain why FF’S have dropped over time. Boxofficemojo would do this, India will ignore WW1 and WW2 and present history of wars post 1994?

This is basically suggesting HAHK is Jesus and there is BC and AC. Apparently the world never saw dinosaurs!

          Like

        • Maybe the opposite is true for you. Maybe you don’t like standards that deconstruct SRK? Anyone can play that game.

Leaving this aside what all this doesn’t explain is why

          a) they’re able to achieve great grosses and great trending in Hollywood (presumably the society with the most distractions on earth) relative to their market at all times

          b) they’re able to generate much better per capita grosses in Tamil and Telugu compared to Hindi

As for your ‘reduced’ argument yeah everything is reduced for everyone till an Aamir movie shows up (in a variety of genres). At some point you have to stop making excuses. Incidentally the 90s was generally bad for Hollywood too. A lot of their big films failing and so on, the industry retooled and got smarter about it. Now when American TV has been going through a golden age for years and when it dominates the discussion the way cinema doesn’t anymore nonetheless Hollywood has been routinely producing big numbers and better trending on a lot of these big films. And when they have disappointments or even disappointing years they don’t say ‘oh the audience prefers HBO’! Finally they also keep comparing things precisely with the past by looking at higher ticket rates, 3D or IMAX advantage, screen counts etc. In India folks like yourself conveniently want to look at all the downside and none of the upside. Again one has to stop making excuses at some point. In any case we’ve heard it all before. Films can’t do a 100, can’t do 200, can’t do 300, etc etc. Meanwhile a guy does all this in non-masala genres. Again one must stop saying ‘oh that’s Aamir’. A whole basket f excuses. Except that the basket has huge holes. The excuses don’t last very long! Other than for those who subscribe to the BOI bubble or something similar.

        • The movie ran for years on end in several cities. Prints of hit films used to take years to go from Class A to Class C centers. I had seen Sholay in 1979 (4 yrs after its release) at a theatre in a small town in N India. Also, there were no video viewings before the early 80s, so one could ONLY watch movies in theaters.
Remember that scene from Swades, where the villagers watch a movie on a makeshift screen with a projector. This used to be the reality of India back then. I had paid Rs 1 to see several movies on such screens in my small town in Guj back then. So would you not count that Rs 1 as a FF?
Another fact: Sholay was also the most preferred movie to re-run on days when exhibitors had nothing else worthwhile to put up in their theaters. These were exhibitors who had outright bought the prints of Sholay just to keep re-running until eternity. Print ghis ghis ke raddi ho jaati thi, and they would even cut the portions of prints that had totally deteriorated, so much that people would be upset at missing out some crucial scene or dialog of that deleted portion. I have witnessed this even into the early 90s in places as varied as Bombay, Bangalore and Dubai!
Sholay also had insane amount of repeat viewings. It used to be normal to find people who had seen it 10+ times in theaters back then. There is a reason why every kid from that era can recite those dialogs even now.
So it is not inconceivable that Sholay FFs were way more than 10crs, and similarly also of many more Blockbusterss from that era.

          1) As per 1981 Census Indias population was 68 crores, out of that around 35% population consist of children from 0-10 age group. So you want to say on an average 1 out of 2 person watched the movie in theatres.
          2) Yes its correct that there was no privacy or alternative like television at that time but the social structure of society too can’t be ignored. With more than 85% rural population consisting equal number of women, these huge number are implausible. Don’t forget that rural folks especially women rarely visited cinema halls .

It’s true I’d view the Sholay number with scepticism but at same point it’s the most popular and known film since I was a child. Everyone knows the film.

These types of numbers and assertions I’ll like to know how much money would people bet on it if one could verify. I bet a lot of BOI fans would not put their house on a number if push came to shove.

        • Again, as a reference and as alluded by Aamirsaurabh below, Gone with the Wind had 200+million tickets sold! The population of USA in the 40s was not even 150 million. So does that mean that the entire nation from babies to fogies see the movie more than 1 time? No, the answer lies in the simple fact that the movie ran for years on end, and had insane amount of multiple viewings. Same is the case with Sholay. In fact Sholay was knows as the GWTW of Bollywood.
It is disingenuous and dimwitted For BOI to try to diminish this record in order to further their agenda.
Aside, I don’t think people born after 1990 can comprehend the dynamics and impact of theatrical cinema before the advent of VCRs, TV, PCs and smartphones.

I have links right from BOI to India Today and old magazines scans which states same … don’t know what is your age, but if you lived 1975-1990 era, then you should not ask this question. Everyone know how Sholay ruled cinemas in those 15 years. It was custom to release Sholay at least once in a year in every city. Majority of audience saw Sholay at least 4-5 times in theater. Even 25 Crore would be a conservative estimate.

Either this number is correct or our census data has been underreporting our population!! I remember this number was told to be closer to 10 crores sometime back (can’t find the source). Now since BB2 it has seemed to climb up suddenly!

        • Rehan I have stated the same . These figures are implausible. Whatever may be the repeat viewing, whatever may be the sources , this figure of 22-25 crores can’t be justified . People here seems to have no idea regarding the rural-urban divide of those times. A large section of rural population( especially women) would not have gone to cinema hall even once. In addition to that the North- South divide also restricts the footfalls of Hindi films. Considering all these factors these figures are indigestible whether you belong to that era or not.

Tubelight is looking at another huge fall in the third week as it has collected less than 1 crore nett in the third week in the first four days. The third week is likley to finish at around 1.25 crore nett and the lifetime business of the film will go to a little over 115 crore nett.

In terms of footfalls its the worst Salman Khan performer since Veer in 2011. A Wanted released in 2009 did 60 crore nett but had far higher footfalls than Tubelight. The daily collections of Tubelight till date are as follows.

    Week One – 1,02,57,00,000

    Week Two – 11,42,00,00,000

Week Three – 85,00,000 apprx (Four Days)

    TOTAL – 1,14,84,00,000

The business of the film is looking to be around 33 crore nett in Mumbai, around 25 crore nett In Delhi /UP and around 13.25 crore nett in East Punjab. The film has performed best in North comparatively.

    Mom First Monday Busines
    Monday 11 July 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mom (Hindi) had a good hold on Monday dropping around 25% on Monday to collect in the 2.25 crore nett range. Its a good hold but these sort of films that will only be liked by a limited audience have to be doing around the Friday number on Monday and in those terms it should have done better on Monday. The first week seems to be heading for a 22-23 crore nett total and then its all down to where the second Friday lands which will tell where the film is going.

The film has done well in Mumbai but North is very crucial for these multiplex films as it has a large number of premium multiplexes and these theatres which hold strong into week two and three but Mom has not really performed in North and this is where the film will probably struggle in the long run. The collections of Mom for the first weekend are as follows.

    Friday – 3,00,00,000

    Saturday – 5,00,00,000

    Sunday – 6,25,00,000

    Monday – 2,25,00,000

    Total – 16,50,00,000

The film has done decent business in Mumbai circuit with good contributions from Mumbai city and Pune and should easily clock up around 9 crore nett plus in the circuit.

    Ritambhara Dixit | Jul 11, 2017, 05.27 PM IST
Shah Rukh Khan: I want to work with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan
Shah Rukh Khan, who was last seen on screen in a cameo appearance in ‘Tubelight’ recently opened up about the possibility of working with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. The ‘Raees’ actor said that while he is very keen to work with Aamir and Salman, the same has not happened due to the lack of a good script.

Talking about the lack of a good script, Shah Rukh said, “If anybody has a good story in which Salman, Aamir and I can fit together in equal roles or even if we find any story for two us, then we will surely work together. In the past four to five years, I have not heard any good story in which two heroes have equal parts or in which two big stars can work together.”

Shah Rukh further added, “Let me tell you, we three have no issues working together. In fact, we three have often discussed this amongst ourselves that if we get a good script, we should definitely do it. I have told Salman and Aamir numerous times that we should sincerely contemplate doing a film together.”

“It is not important that either one of us has to have the story, it is important that a director should have such a story. In the past, Aamir, Salman and I have not heard any story in which will justify all three of us coming together. For if the story is not good, then the three of us working together will be useless,” asserted Shah Rukh.

Shah Rukh signed off saying, “If we have to make a film starring all three of us or even the two of us, there has to be a good story in which there should be equal roles and a story that should appeal to us. There has to be a director who can write such a story and make the film. What is most important is that all three of us should have dates that match. Everyone should be free and everyone needs to have the time so that the shooting of the film can be completed in a stretch. The cost of working with big stars is high because of the time required and not the money we charge. If we get such an opportunity, we will definitely work together.”

  74. About footfalls. When there are round figures, then it becomes difficult to trust completely. Like 10 crores or 20 crores. We should take them with a pinch of salt. But now due to proper tracking in many countries, Indian story becomes suspect and prejudiced. And thus it leads to discussions where everyone agrees to disagree. I think Sholay is the baap and others are kids trying to impress. BB2 is another huge embarrassment to Bollywood. Dangal’s China numbers are equally astounding. Srk’s longest hold overseas and Salman’s huge successes should be appreciated because they are not overnight successes. Others are also running and trying to make a difference. Akshay Kumar for instance. And in all this, we should not forget Madhuri who contributed to HAHK’s success, Sridevi who has her own aura and legendary Hema Malini and the trio of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand. And Rajesh Khanna. The first superstar and evergreen romantic hero who is more than his mannerisms. Nargis, Meena Kumari and Nutan form another trio in acting department without the aid of glamour. Female contributors are no less.

If these guyz spent half that time and effort in acting, understanding the film medium and choosing good films, they would do themselves a lot of favor. But its the glamour of being the ‘hero’ that drives such enthusiasm towards stunts and dancing imo, which personally I find distasteful.

The craze for these three movies was way above any other movie in that decade. Later on when I started following BO, it was not surprising that these three films were the biggest ATBBs and money-spinners of that decade. The three Khans shared the accolades in three consecutive years and made them real pan-India household idols. These 3 films I think were real career defining moments for the then young Khans, which gave them the fan base to rule the industry for 25 years and counting. No other younger actor after the three Khans has delivered such pan India ATBBs. In the 2000s decade we had 3 Idiots and in this decade there is BB2, which is a true outlier.

However, it seems DDLJ has aged better than HAHK and RH (in that order) among the film aficionados in the internet. Maybe that is somehow correlated with it doing better in metros and bigger towns than in the interiors. As for footfalls, in India these are all very sketchy and rough estimates. We dont have proper BO tracking mechanism in place yet, counting footfalls or even estimating them are a futile exercise.

If all the new age actors hit superstardom and then the shift comes into the industry. If again, the new actor fail.. it will extend their career again. Even then, it will be just 1 movie per year for these 3 actors at the max, don’t see more films.

Srk has mentioned after 55, he’ll take easy and do very less movies and by the age of 60, he’ll go full time as producer and hardly do major movies.
Salman has no actual plan and he is a star who depends on stardom, so he’ll be fine till 55 but then age stars showing up. Already they are comments how fat and old he appeared in Tubelight. Looking old is not problem but then you need to select such roles and it will take a while for Salman to do the aged roles.
Aamir will transition easily and Dangal has setup the foundation for his next 15 years. He can switch between younger and older roles even at age of 60.

Aamir Khan – It may come as a shock to his fans but Aamit is likely to feature in 5 more films and that too would be a stretch. I would bet it to be around 3-4 till he retires.

SRK – He will long last as he is still hungry. So 10 more films with last 6 being character roles

Salman – He will be quickest to go. His startdom in last 5 years was unparalleled. He is unlikely to do character roles. He will quit as a tiger.

Apart from that he is in talks regarding the Rakesh Sharma biopic and also a movie with Rakeysh Mehra. That is 3-4 films in the span of next 3-4 years starting this Diwali. At some point he is bound to take up direction full-time. So he isnt going anywhere.

SRK may be pushed to play character roles sooner than expected if his middle-aged lover acts in JHMS and Dwarf does not click.

Salman has a few sequels lined up after Tubelight – TZH, Dabangg 3, Kick 2 etc. He will last as long as these sequels do well. I agree that he will the quickest to go, but maybe still around for another 3-4 years.

        • Aamir will be involved and most likely if his script choosing remains sharp whatever capacity he is around in it will more than likely be his films that last longer.

Dangal is good for him as the image of a father figure is his biggest box office success ever of his. I think he’ll leave on his terms.

SRK I can see being around as an actor/producer – success will determine how long for.

Salman’s hard to predict, his career is up and down. He could conceivably struggle but strike back.

The latter 2 have promised greater volumes. SRK said in some interviews he’ll do 2-3 films a year; Salman has said something similar too recently. This never pans out as planned. The best plan is no plan which I think is what Aamir does. His terms, his choices etc.

Till they budge no one is coming in.

Over the next few years (4-5 years in my reckoning) we will get max volume from Salman, followed by SRK. Aamir works at his own pace. It also depends on what scripts come his way. When he likes the scripts he does sign 2-3 movies in quick succession. So he can even surprise many with some volume, if we are lucky. The moot question is when he will switch to direction and whether he will continue as an actor-director. He even showed his mettle in producing small niche films successfully one after the other in Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly. So his options are all open. As a combination of actor/director/producer he can remain relevant for another 2-3 decades imo.

‘Is this a Hindi song? It doesn’t sound like one,’ the legendary singer said. ‘I don’t think I can sing this, please find another singer.’

“We pleaded with him. We said he was the best singer to sing it. Finally, he relented on one condition: He would sing it only once.”

“If we liked it, good, otherwise, we would have to find another singer. We reluctantly agreed,” Sameer remembers.

Kishore Kumar sang the song n one take and it went on to become one of the biggest hits of its time.

  84. JJHS has actually done well but the issue was it released with huge expectations as coming from Aamir-Mansoor Khan, Nasir Khan and within a week or two it was labelled flop and disappointing but it hanged onto the collections at lower level for long and went over Average. Overall it is still considered to be a moderately successful movie thought it got back its critical acclaim once it received the BEST FILM award at the Filmfare.

Dil Hai ki maanta nahin was huge hit musically but boxoffice wise was just about fine. Wasn’t huge hit or something and more or less similar to Hum Hai Raahi Pyar ke. Both directed by Mahesh Bhatt. But both are considered to be successful films and unlike JJWS. Too much talk even in that era about remake of Chori Chori and remakes were not the norm yet. But overall I would consider these both as good hits.

Dil was a huge blockbuster and share the same release date with another blockbuster in Ghayal.

    • JJWS wasn’t considered any kind of success at the time. In 1990 the biggest hit was Dil followed by Ghayal and Aaj Ka Arjun (the last two in the same range, Dil was very significantly ahead). The last of these was huge in North India even at the height of the Rath Yatra riots. DHKMN was decent, nothing special, but certainly perceived as a success. HHRPK was a very solid hit or better. What is true however is that DHKMN and JJWS had more or less the same gross. But again it was about expectations. There’s no doubt though that JJWS has aged better than all of these Aamir films including Dil.

      • @Satyam – Thanks for all the BO info. I read somewhere that DHKMN did better in cities than in interiors, but not sure if that is indeed true. Maybe it did skewed business like DCH and Talaash. HHRPK was perhaps a more universal hit.

Even by Mansoor Khan’s own words, JJWS was not great shakes at BO when it released (i guess the expectation was much higher after QSQT), and he described it as a movie that also ran. However, he did emphasize that over time it has turned out to be the most acclaimed film that he had directed. In fact, he wanted to debut as a director with his own script of JJWS and not QSQT (which has written by his father Naseer Hussain), but went ahead with directing QSQT as that script was ready first.

Of all the films during Aamir’s chocolate days (pre-Rangeela), JJWS is definitely the film with maximum shelf life. A close second favorite is QSQT, followed by HHRPK and DHKMN. Dil is perhaps the film that has not aged that well. Among the not successful films, AAA has garnered a cult following. Apart from that he actually had another 12 flops in that phase (out of 18 films he did before Rangeela)!

I mention Rangeela, because that was the first deviation from the lover boy image into more tough guy roles. It was followed by Ghulam, Sarfarosh, 1947 (apart from the run-of-the-mill RH, Ishq and Mann). Sarfarosh is a film that stands out in that phase. Of course, things changed drastically after Aamir floated AKP and made Lagaan.

BTW…did anyone notice that no 20 year box office ceremony was held for Raja Hindustani last year? This is at a time when these type of events are common and RH being one of the biggest blockbusters in indian cinema, one would think that Dharmesh Darshan would arrange some type of a get together but not a peep. I believe even Aamir looks back at that movie now and wonders how in the world it became such a huge hit. It was a lousy movie but the songs were huge at that time. Somehow the box office gods decided to smile upon Aamir after giving blockbuster hits to Salman in 1994 and SRK in 1995. This resulted in MELA which was the last time Aamir gave a flop!

    • It’s a remake of the old Shashi Kapoor film Jab Jab Phool Khile. Incidentally it’s not one of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema. Nor is DDLJ. HAHK would qualify.

      Like

    • RH I think qualifies as one of the biggest hits of the nineties, but not for Indian cinema. I believe it was more in the same space as Ghajini, and not 3I.

I also think Aamir was lucky to get such a big hit in a poor film like RH. It is easily the lousiest film out of all his hits in the nineties. There are reports that Aamir had rejected DDLJ, but even on paper that script was better than something like RH. But it may have been an ideological matter. Starting from QSQT, the idea behind Aamir’s romance has been to rebel against parental opposition. From QSQT to Dil to DHKMN, the ideology was to run away from home against parental disapproval of love. Whereas DDLJ is the epitome of sucking up to the girl’s family. It would perhaps have been a weird choice if Aamir had signed up DDLJ (if he was indeed offered that movie).

A lot of 90’s cinema hasn’t aged well. DDLJ remains a favourite, DTPH despite being lesser box office success but having a strong youthful feel feels better up against HAHK, KKHH & RH. The latter is by far the film I’d least like to revisit. And then this seismic shift where I’d watch DCH over any similarly mimicked film till today. It still packs a punch as the central plot of love is sideshow to the buddy buddy comedy.

        Like

      • DDLJ is a fine film and I have nothing against it. And I would anyday revisit it over HAHK or RH. But I brought in the ideological angle because Aamir himself ran way against parental opposition to marry Reena during the making of QSQT. So he may have belonged to that rebellious school of love in his early years. Later of course he was more interested in doing different genres and different characters, as he evolved out of the chocolate hero image.

DCH I thought had a sweet love story embedded within the buddy comedy and drama. There again the lead tries to snatch way the bride from the marriage decided by the girl’s parent on the wedding day.

For a guy who started as a romantic hero, I think it is simply amazing that his biggest hit has come with Dangal without an iota of romance in it and playing a middle-aged, white-aired, pot-bellied father. It is ironical!

        • Even during its time the sad ending had the audience divided. I remember my elder female cousins could not sit through the ending. In fact, Naseer Hussain wanted Mansoor Khan to change the climax to a happy one to appease the concerned distributors. A happy ending may have perhaps made it a bigger blockbuster like MPK, but personally I favor the sad ending. The most beautiful stories are often tragic ones.

SHOCKING Pandemonium over Jagga Jasoos release, Disney threatened to sue Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor for damages

Until Tuesday, just three days ahead of its release, Jagga Jasoos was still not ready. Anurag Basu was yet to complete the post-production work and sources from the Jagga Jasoos team were laying the blame squarely at music composer Pritam Chakraborty’s doorstep.
    Next

“The film is an uninterrupted musical. All the conversations are also in song form. Pritam has, as usual, been tardy. Despite the fact that Dada (Basu) and Pritam da are best friends and neighbours, Pritam da has taken his time over the music. Bits and pieces remained pending until the last moments, leading to a situation of panic and chaos among the post-production team,” says the source.

Incidentally, Pritam is known to take his time over the music score. Most recently Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali had to bide their time to get a tune for Jab Harry Met Sejal.

If Pritam is indeed responsible for the delay in the completion of the post-production work in Jagga Jasoos then it is indeed a costly delay.

Apparently the film’s primary producers Disney threatened to sue the co-producers Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor to the tune of Rs. 50 crores for breach of contract before Pritam was persuaded to pull up his socks and deliver just in the nick of time.

It seems Jagga Jasoos will make it in the theatres after all. But the stress tension and palpitation it has caused to its producers will perhaps be remembered long after the film has come and gone.

A bit of an early 90s feel to it, the sort of film Aamir might have done at the time but it was otherwise fine. Barfi too was essentially a romantic comedy of sorts with that angle added to it. With Jagga Jasoos though things are more risky. If you get it right you have a significant film which transcends the gross to some extent. Otherwise you have an utter disaster. The sort of film that these days becomes fodder for social media entertainment. The kind of thing that is viciously taken apart.

Dangal has finish its run in China with a little over $191 million and its Worldwide gross in all formats of the film is a little over 1975 crore. The film find a release in Hong Kong and South Korea and it may be able to dome business in these Far eastern markets to take it to 2000 crore.

Bahubali – The Conclusion has finished its run witn around 1590 crore and it might get a Far Eastern release but its very unlikely to do well in these markets as the film is a core Indian mass film. Despite the worldwide total staying below Dangal it is still a far bigger blockbuster than Dangal as its INDIA distributor share far outweighs the Dangal WORLDWIDE share and it has out grossed Dangal in every circuit where it has been released be it India or Overseas . The business of Dangal across the world is as follows.

    India (GROSS)

    India / Overseas (Hindi) – 7,02,47,00,000

I cross-checked that without ticketing fees, the Chinese total is around 175 M$ only (not 191 M$ as per Hollywood reporting). So it may indeed be true that Aamir’s office is considering the Chinese gross without ticketing fees, and the official numbers are approx 100 cr behind others.
