  1. BOI china no. is lower than actual.it’s 1238cr,plus Taiwan no. is 40cr and has not been updated.Actual is around 1995cr.

@Marcus,Spokesperson has not left china ticketing fee but he has added india nett in place of Gross.

China-1230cr till 29.6.17 as was reported.
    Phase1 OS-207cr
    India nett-387cr
    Taiwan-40cr.

You add these and get 1864cr.SS has added Ind. nett in place of Ind. gross.

      • The whole spokesman thing sounded fishy from the beginning. To me it sounded like a planted story that Indian media picked up, like they always do. Not only that, they will keep harping the sentences from the article on other unrelated Dangal news from there on. Very typical. Who is this spokesperson what is his or her name what context were the numbers quoted? Why would they come out of no where just to correct the overall gross without any other information. Does Aamir even have a spokesperson. Did he or she regularly speak on behalf of Aamir or ever spoke and give information prior to this incident? This is all junk.

        • Right. Since, when did Aamir care about numbers to actually feel the need come out and refute a number like Gross which is not a standard measure across markets? Aamirs stand always has been that he is a creative person and the numbers are for people in trade. This is a ludicrous attempt at undermining Dangal’s success.

  2. On another note check out BOI’s current report on Jagga Jasoos. Can’t say they’re breaking new ground in hypocrisy and dishonesty but this is just the latest example. They’re tying themselves up in knots to be positive on the film and its stars. By the end though they’re even praying for a 5 metro pickup! Wasn’t this the kind of performance they took down a hugely influential film like DCH for 16 years after the event?!

  4. SHOCKING! Preity Zinta BLASTS Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani for negatively portraying a character allegedly based on her in their web show
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Jul 13, 2017 – 5:18 pm IST

Preity Zinta has been in the news thanks to the new web show Inside Edge, which is inspired by the very popular annual IPL cricket tournament. A character played by Richa Chadha seems to be inspired by Preity, who owns the Kings XI Punjab team in IPL. Preity was silent on the comparisons but few days ago, she opened up finally and blasted the makers in a way that will surely shock you.

Preity Zinta began by wondering whether its films or TV shows or web series, why are women in power in India always projected as bitches or whores. She angrily stated that it’s usually the ‘regressive men’ who make such kind of content and that they don’t have the balls to show anything apart from that.

She then admitted that she wishes if there were more women directors in Bollywood so that they could show things realistically and sensitively. She made a very interesting observation that prominent women directors never show a guy as a gigolo, sleeping around to climb the ladder of success.

Richa Chadha in ‘Inside Edge’ is also shown as an actress who turns into a cricket entrepreneur. Preity is the only one actress who turned into a team owner in a cricket tournament and hence, one can’t help but draw comparisons with her. On this regard, Preity reminded that she may be the only actress-entrepreneur in IPL but apart from her, Nita Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians team, is also a woman in power in IPL. But she asserted that no filmmaker will have the guts to show a business woman sleeping around. She is also disappointed since IPL has seen numerous success stories of cricketers coming from nowhere and making it big. Instead, the focus in ‘Inside Edge’ was only on the muck and gore that’s supposedly a part of the tournament and this saddened her.

Lastly, Preity Zinta expressed her displeasure with ‘Inside Edge’ producer Farhan Akhtar as well, with whom she worked in two memorable films – Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya. She thanked Farhan for making it clear that ‘Inside Edge’ is fictional but then questioned him as to why is their version of fiction so uni-dimensional. Calling Farhan, partner Ritesh Sidhwani as ‘friends’, she stated that they didn’t bother to even call her and take inputs.

While signing off, she asked the makers rhetorically whether they were in the bed observing who’s sleeping with whom and how on earth they came across these plot points and what purpose does it serve.

Preity has always been known to be the one who never minces words but with these statements, it shows that the actress is truly hurt by the portrayal of the character allegedly based on her.

But it is a good time for both Ranbir and Katrina to release this experimental film. Ranbir has Dutt biopic early next year. Katrina has 3 consecutive films with the 3 Khans over the next year or so. Even a massive flop here wont affect them too much.

Personally it was always a risky project but I feel the greater risk the greater reward and if movie is good audience’s love will turn it upside down with all the movie making effort getting enough praises. It can click with kids if well made but if it messed up, it will fall pretty quickly. As many suggested there is no middle ground for these kind of movies.. either acceptance or total rejection.

    • I am pretty sure the makes think this wont work..If you have a strong product you need to maximize it by hoping WOM comes around by evening shows…But by reducing release size they are not helping a bit. If the movie is good it will still struggle to put big numbers now and then you have Munna Michael coming next week which is surely opening big…I suspect They are saving on print cost here I would think as the product is very bad…Very sad because Ranbir Kapoor is arguably the best young actor we have and he deserves something good…

        • This is very low screen count. Even Half girlfriend and ADHM (clash) had more screens. Add to that not eager to get the early reviews out is like writing on the wall for the movie. If they have good product and depending on WOM then they should have let screening and reviews out by now. So that it could have build momentum for tomorrow and weekend. Movie about to release in few hours and not a single review. Doesn’t look they are confident and to save the twitter backlash and KRK(ala Bombay velvet) they don’t want the negativity to impact too much on first day itself. Its very very quiet altogether.

As there is no big movie to compete after Tubelight’s fiasco, people may want to watch Ranbir Katrina. We can get this movie out of our systems one way or the other. Big relief! A below average affair, it may turn out to be. Or it may be a surprise hit. Low expectations maybe better than Great Expectations.

Normally films open in the UAE and Dubai on Thursday.

Parekh says they could manage the worldwide distribution of Jagga Jasoos on schedule in spite of the delayed “delivery” of prints only because of the producer Disney’s international reach.

“If it wasn’t for Disney’s marketing I don’t know what we would have done,” Parekh shudders.

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Jagga Jasoos has been the talk of the town for its trailer, songs, promos and behind the scenes. The songs Ullu ka pattha, Galti se mistake, Jhumritalaiyya and Phir wahi have been ruling the charts.

The newly released content from the film is making it more difficult than ever to wait for its release. As the movie is inching closer to its release, the excitement of the audience is knowing no bounds.

  15. Ranbir easily is the best young actor out there after the Khans and Akshay. But his main problem (imo) is that he has been experimenting too much with high budget films. He started his career well with an impressive line up of medium budget flicks and delivered hits/superhits in APKGK, Raajneeti, Barfi, YJHD and moderate successes in BAH, WUS, Rockstar, etc. But then he started experimenting in v high budget flicks like Bombay Velvet, Besharam, Tamasha which all failed. JJ belongs to that phase. Barfi was made at a budget of 50 cr or so and made 100 cr. But the estimated budget of JJ itself is 100 cr! That is too high for an experimental musical film, making it v risky. My point is that he should be a little less ambitious and do his experiments on a smaller scale.

Anyways, he did recover some ground with ADHM becoming a hit last year. And he is v lucky imo to have Dutt with Hirani coming up, which should be a big career defining moment for him and should set up a new phase in his career.

Very good point. JJ in a matter of days has unraveled so fast; Ranbir saying he’d pay distributors, low screen count, UAE release postponed, Pritam’s music issues, no press release shows. It’s irony that a film delayed so long just did not prepare for a release.

I would think Ranbir has learnt his lesson this time as a producer.

The film sounds like either love or hate, but with such a social media world structure the same I’m sure it will be punished severely even if ok as a film.

  18. Spiderman Good – Mom Low – Guest In London Disaster
    Friday 14 July 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Spiderman – Homecoming has done well in week one with collections of 43 crore nett in week one. The holds were reasonable in the weekdays and the collections were almost double the main Hindi release Mom. The last two Spiderman films crossed 50 crore nett with the last one doing 56 crore nett in 2014 and this could beat that film and maybe even reach 60 crore nett. It is the second highest grosser from Hollywood this year after Fast & Furious 8 which did 85 crore nett.

Mom had a low first week of 23.25 crore nett which is similar to what Hindi Medium grossed a month or so back and the trend of Mom on weekdays was decent but it remains to be seen if it can follow through into the second week. It has competition with Jagga Jasoos but that is unlikely to take that killer opening to affect the run of Mom and Mom has a screen at major multiplexes which will be enough for it to collect well. The bigger problem is the film has not been appreciated in Delhi / NCR / Punjab and its the multiplexes here that tend to hold well and take the likes of Pink and Hindi Medium to good final totals. The film is dependent on Mumbai, South and West Bengal and these places will have to be very good on day eight for the film to pull through.

Guest In London had a poor first week of 7.50 crore nett. The weekdays saw a normal trend but it wont be adding much in the second week and will close at around 8 crore nett.

Ranbir Kapoor as Jagga shows what he is capable of. He is a gem of an actor! Watch the film for Ranbir if not for anything else!

Katrina as school teacher Shruti tries her best and does a decent job.

Saswata Chatterjee as Professor Bagchi is excellent, Rajatava Chatterjee as police inspector and Saurabh Shukla as the antagonist are good.
Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Direction, Music

Anurag Basu takes you on a musical adventurous journey. The film is engaging from the very beginning. However, it tends to stretch in the beginning of the second half and it could be tiring to hold your patience here. A little more effort was needed on the film’s editing. The film regains pace as it moves towards the climax.

Basu has chosen a set of excellent and veteran actors in the form of Bengali actors Saswata Chatterjee, Rajatava Dutta, and Bollywood actor Saurabh Shukla, all of who play major roles in the film.

S Ravi Varman does a nice job with the camera. The film has been shot in scenic landscapes and nice sets. However, in several scenes, the fake background was clearly understandable, (as it used to be during black and white and early color films) which is surprising in this era of magnificent visual effects.

Pritam take a bow! Excellent use of music in weaving dialogues into songs and poetry. However, in one particular scene, the music sounded similar to Satyajit Ray’s iconic detective film Sonar Kella (the camel scene for those who have watched it).

Songs Galti se mistake and the rap song Khaana khaake are my picks from the album.
Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: The Last Word

I would highly recommend watching this musical with a fresh and interesting script and nice music. This is surely one of Ranbir Kapoor’s best performances.

Jagga Jasoos had a low opening of around 20-25% on average with the five metros being better but elsewhere the collections were dull. The film was always going to struggle for an opening due despite the precence of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif as the film was not really offering any entertainment for the youth or mass audience which is the audience which forms a large ratio of the initial audience. The opening of the film is best in Mumbai city and Bangalore.

The biggest plus for the film is the way its been released with just 1100 theaters screening it on 1800 screens, it has been released only in theatres where it has chances to work. Its not unusual to see such a film go to near 2000 theatres and 2500 screens which is just killing the film on day one as many theatres collect so badly that they don’t even recover print costs. the film is a highly multiplex concentrate release with 1500 screens in plexes and 300 single screens.

Its a similar strategy to Barfi which was just 800 theatres and an even tighter release than this one. This release can pay dividends with this type of content film with a cast but its all about that five city (Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Kolkata) audience and do they take to the film. That will be known over the next two days.

    • Interesting release strategy here. Dear Zindagi, a pure multiplex film opened at 1150 screens and scored 8 cr on opening day. Here JJ is running in 50% more screens and a similar response should fetch 12 cr opening day.

They have given the break up of screen count as 1500 plexes and 300 single screens. Would like to know the urban-rural divide too. From their overall commentary it seems a city-centric release.

I guess Secret Superstar will also go for a similar release strategy. At one point there were reports that AKP was looking at a release in approx 2000 screens. The maximum potential per day for such a release is reportedly 20 cr range.

Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Ranbir Kapoor Does The Heavy Lifting, Katrina Kaif Plays Second Fiddle

Ranbir Kapoor in Jagga Jasoos (Image courtesy: jaggajasoos)
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee, Sayani Gupta

    Director: Anurag Basu

Rating: 3 stars (out of 5)

A breezy, audaciously jaunty ride through the misadventures of a stuttering, bumbling boy-detective in search of his missing foster father, Jagga Jasoos has memorable madcap moments, stemming principally from its free-flowing mix of music, dancer, situational and slapstick humour and wildly improbable action. Even if it might feel like an epic misfire at times, Anurag Basu’s deliciouly wacky adventure drama, when it is on song, has an oddly bewitching quality.

Lead actor Ranbir Kapoor’s undeniable gifts power the film. But does Jagga Jasoos hold its avowed course over its nearly three-hour runtime? Not quite. It wanders off frequently, leaving the audience in an extended state of befuddlement. But when it returns to its chosen track, starting with the 1995 Purulia arms dropping case and careening through an espionage operation gone wrong and a pursuit of the world’s most dreaded weapons smuggler, it is fun.

    • Thanks to the peppy music and the bright and varied colour palette used by director Anurag Basu and director of photography S Ravi Varman, Jagga Jasoos is never less than entertaining. If only it had greater consistency as a story, it would have been an unqualified triumph. It isn’t. That’s a shame because in terms of its conception and execution the film does exude warmth and joyful abandon. It is intermittently infectious all right and that might prompt the audience to overlook some of the glitches that stares us in the face.

Katrina Kaif, as a mishap-prone investigative journalist, is hard-pressed to match strides with Ranbir, but the free-flowing nature of the yarn allows her enough opportunities to catch her breath when she needs to and continue to saunter along for company. It is just as well that she plays second fiddle, letting Ranbir do all the heavy lifting. He carries the weight of the film without letting the strain show. If Jagga Jasoos passes muster, it is largely due to a pivotal star turn that is worth its weight in gold and the surreal touches that Basu imparts to the fantasy.

Jagga Jasoos has been released on close to 1800 screens while Kaabil was released on 2550 screens as it had more single screens. The difference is B and C centres where Jagga Jasoos has a limited release so collections are also limited. Even if the film did get a release at these places it would have hardly collected. Below are the admit figures of first shows for Jagga Jasoos and Kaabil with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city.

On the whole, Jagga Jasoos is a very costly experiment and a classic case of over-indulgence in a film which hardly has audience to lap it up. It is a terrible waste of resources and it should never have been made in the first place – at least and definitely not at the cost at which it has been made. At the box-office, the film will prove to be a major debacle and will be remembered as a blot on the reputations of all the people connected with it.

        • Even after first 2 yrs of shooting they had done only 30% of shooting. They had full chance to shelve this movie and then shoot another smaller, quicker movie in 6 months so no one has to return any money back to Disney. Instead they kept delaying this for years and then messed up the project. It affected even Ranbir’s career as he was blocked by this movie and was unable to accept many offers and just accepted 2 movies which he couldn’t refuse – Karan’s and Hirani. Even his Superhero movie with Ayan kept getting delayed.

Ranbir said he discussed with Basu about shelving this project multiple times but they decided to continue. It is just collasal waste of money, time of 4 years. Inciidently when it was launched it was supposed to be start to end shoot of 6 months project as they said they didn’t wanted to delay like Barfi and shoot quicker this time.

Below is the launch article of Jagga Jasoos! They hoped to release before Vidya Balan’s Bobby Jasoos (which ended up releasing in July 2014).

          *************

Jagga Jasoos will now be shot in a start-to-finish schedule (a rarity for a film with big stars) from October 2013 to February 2014. Jagga Jasoos also features Katrina Kaif.

Sources claim that the initial plan was to start the film next year. When contacted, Anurag says, “Yes, we will finish almost the entire shoot by that time (February).” He adds that they want to wrap up the shoot in one go only because “Ranbir’s dates are available”.

However, in spite of Anurag’s claims, the dates for another Ranbir-starrer, Roy (to be directed by his childhood friend, Vikramjit Singh) seem to have been affected. Scheduled to start in December, it has now been pushed to February. Bhushan Kumar, producer for Roy, says, “Ranbir will now shoot with us from February. He is also shooting for other films.”

        • Both Hirani and Ayan’s film with Ranbir have been in the news for such long time too! Hirani of course takes his own sweet time to make his films and Ranbir doing Dutt biopic has been floating around since he was making PK. Much like the third Munnabhai film has been making waves all through out the making of Dutt. In reality, the third munnabhai film wont release anytime before 2021!

As for Ayan’s film, it too has been in pre-production from such a long time. It was announced after YJHD (2013) and has been in the news for all these years. I am not too hopeful with it as it is again unknown territory for Ranbir (fantasy superhero?), that too with too high a budget.

It will be interesting to see what films he signs after Dutt release (which is expected to be a big one). But I will say this, after YJHD Ranbir has lost the chance to quickly follow it up with a few light breezy romcoms to cement himself as the next big star after Khans and Akshay. But Dutt is likely to give him the pedestal to push it to the next level.

Munnabhai 3 will release in 2018 99.9% (just can move to 2019 early at worst). Won’t be more than 2 yrs gap. Everything is ready. Hirani doesn’t take much time to shoot, only PK got long schedule and Dutt was just started shooting in Jan 2017 and its almost done with 10 days shooting left after this 5 day NY schedule happening this week and is ready for year end but they delayed to not clash with TZH. Munnabhai 3 will be shot in 6 months max.

Hirani may have started to work on it already, but he will surely take minimally 2 years to make it, if not more (including all the pre and post production work). He does not rush and I will be v surprised if MB3 releases anytime before 2020. Most likely its release will get pushed to 2021.

Dont mind it though, they should take the franchise forward with care.

Jagga Jasoos grossed 8.25-8.50 crore nett apprx on its first day which is a low figure for a film with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The film did not show much of a pick up post the 6pm shows as the film despite being a content film which should grow is not for that adult evening audience so remained pretty much flat in the evenings. The film is mainly for children who watch English children channels and this should enable growth on Saturday and Sunday as the families and kids come out in metros but the film needed much wider appreciation to recover its huge costs.

The film was best in Mumbai city and Bangalore while the Hindi belt hardly collected. The film is not a Bombay Velvet as the film will get some sort of weekend audience but not being Bombay Velvet is hardly an achievement. The opening is the seventh best of the year but well short of a double digit opening which is a must when there is the presence of stars. Out of the big films the opening is better than Kaabil only. The opening is lower than Roy which featured Ranbir Kapoor in a guest role and managed a 9.39 crore nett opening. Barfi! which had the same director opened to a similar figure to Jagga Jasoos (8.18 crore nett).

    • After 5 years of Barfi and on an increased screen count, JJ opens in the same range as Barfi on day 1 (8 cr). I still think it is decent given all the delays and the kind of experimental film this is.

BOI is usually harsh on plex oriented films that cater mainly to the cities and not the interiors (films without universal appeal). So I will take their reporting on limited growth in the evening with a pinch of salt. Addatoday reported the occupancy growth has been from 20% in the morning to 60% in the evening shows, which again is a decent pickup. I would expect JJ to grow over the weekend to 30 cr weekend or so.

Since both the reviews and audience reaction are mixed, I think it will double its weekend collection and end its lifetime collections at 60 cr or so. Barfi tripled its weekend collections of 35 cr and ended at 105 cr, BUT it had v positive WOM. While Barfi had the advantage of low budget (50 cr), JJ has too high a budget (100 cr). I agree with those who are stating that JJ should not have been made at such high costs. They should have made a smaller movie with controlled budget in this format.

  40. Jagga Jasoos Opens Better Than Ranbir’s Bombay Velvet & Katrina Kaif’s Baar Baar Dekho
These are fair numbers considering the fact that the film took almost three years in the making
    By
    Joginder Tuteja –
    July 15, 2017

Jagga Jasoos has released and it is a tad peculiar case for a Bollywood film. Reason being that it can’t really be placed in a genre that is familiar for a Hindi film audience.

Though there are Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the film, this isn’t really a romantic tale. Though there is humor in there it can’t be categorized as a comedy. Though there are action scenes too the film can’t be termed as an action thriller. Though there are some emotional moments too it can’t be termed as a dramatic tale. Though there are bits and pieces of romance, comedy, action, thrills and drama, it can’t be termed as ‘masala’ either!

The film is in a world of its own, and if it has to be actually slotted somewhere, it could well be in the ‘adventure’ zone. However, a zone like this hasn’t really been overtly popular for a regular ‘desi’ audience and that reflected in the collections too, what with 8.57 crore coming in for the Anurag Basu directed film on the first day. These are fair numbers considering the fact that the film took almost three years in the making. However, considering the fact that the costs too had escalated in the time period gone by, the film needs to cover a really long distance in order to just make it to the recovery.

The good news though is that the film has done better than Ranbir Kapoor’s Bombay Velvet [5.2 crore] and Katrina Kaif’s Baar Baar Dekho [6.81 crore]. That is some relief because together they have managed a better outing despite the fact that there were troubles surrounding Jagga Jasoos right through its making.

The need of the hour though is real quick momentum to build for the film so that it has a fair enough weekend to allow good hold during the weekdays. The quantum of jump that takes place tomorrow would decide the eventual run for Jagga Jasoos.

The awards in India are a joke as the the world knows but this Iifa award is a stinker and probably the worst of the lot. Maybe as its a worldwide award so they have to drop to a lower level. There was a message going around of best film nominations and it came to our notice. Below are the best film nominations and the list itself will tell the tale of this mockery.

    Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story

    Neerja

    Pink

    Sultan

    Udta Punjab

Reportedly these films come up with a worldwide voting system which is just laughable as these jokers are trying to say films like Dangal (this film does not even have competition as far as 2016 goes) and Airlift did not get votes but likes of Udta Punjab, Neerja and Pink did. Maybe some actors did not give your awards any importance (rightly so) but the idea is to give the most deserving the award whether the recipent gives any importance or not. This means you have done correct from your side.

There film industry gives many bad films but even bigger disasters are the awards and reviews as its one thing being bad but another being fake and thats what reviews and awards are. Non deserving films get awards and bad films get the stars.

Actually the critic fraternity is the worst of the lot as its out there about how bad the awards are but as critics are a part of the general film media they are not going to say how bad or stupid they are. So in this case despite being a level lower than awards in fakeness they can hide and actually comment how bad awards are when they are worse.

The Hollywood release War For The Planet Of The Apes fared poorly with around 2 crore nett coming on day one. The film was released on around 1000 screens and this a very poor return for the film. Last weeks Hollwood release Spiderman – Homecoming as emerged a HIT as it grossed 1.75 crore nett on its second Friday and the film looks on course for lifetime business of around 57-58 crore nett which may just make it the highest grossing Spiderma film ever in India.

Mom had a drop of collections on day eight as it grossed 1 crore nett apprx. The film had held up reasonably well on the weekdays but as appreciation was missing outside a few areas this was always a likely scenario. A film like this which does not open cant afford to be over 50% down in the second week but that is what will happen here and it is likely to that the film will probably fall short of the 35 crore nett mark. The business in 8 days is around 24.50 crore nett. The weekend should see good growth but the first Friday and eight Friday have cost the film dearly.

Guest In London saw a huge crash in collections with around 10 lakhs nett coming and the film will fold at around 8 crore nett.

But I agree with Aamir’s take that playing two aged characters back to back (Dutt after Dangal) would have made it difficult for him to switch back to younger roles. Specially when he does less movies.

        • I feel Hirani did a mistake by not taking Jackie Shroff as the Sunil Dutt. Akshaye Khanna was rejected after look test, I can understand but after asking Aamir, Jackie, Akshaye and then to sign Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt is a mistake for such an important role. Paresh is a fine actor but he appears to past his prime for such roles and can’t see him opposite Maneesh Koirala as Nargis. IMO Jackie under a great director can do phenomenal in supporting role. My choice would have been Jackie over Paresh Rawal.

          Like

        • Yes Jackie would have been great and also of right age to play Ranbir’s father.

Btw, another reason Aamir may have rejected Dutt is probably because he did not want to play 2 supporting roles back to back (after Secret Superstar).

I dont regret Aamir not being part of Dutt, although am a big fan of Aamir-Hirani combo. There has been some talk that Hirani may do a 3I sequel after the third munnabhai film and Aamir has already green-lighted the basic premise of that idea. Not a fan of sequels, but that is one sequel I am sure many would look forward too!

          Like

        • @Marcus if 3I sequal indeed materialises hype an d buzz wld be unseen, wld shatter every possible BO record,if it clicks with audience we cld see unimaginable numbers that might force BOI to shut down their shop.

          Like

        • LOL I would want 3I sequel to happen for a number of reasons, but none of them is BOI to close their shop!

Firstly, I would love to see Aamir-Hirani combo once again. Moreover, Hirani does not make a sequel per definition but uses the same characters to tell a new story. We saw that with LRM. So 3I sequel is unlikely to be a continuation of 3I (which was a v complete film by itself). It would rather be a new story with the same lovable characters at a later stage of their lives.

As for BO, it can perhaps be Bollywood’s best bet to do something like BB2 at all India level. However, 3I’s Tamil remake by Shankar himself was just average at BO down south. So not that sure if 3I sequel can be the Bollywood film to transcend the north-south divide like BB2. But then again, even without bridging that divide, a sequel at some point can really throw up astounding numbers (provided Hirani is at his usual best).

  51. Wrestler Geeta Phogat unhappy with Dangal makers over few scenes
She also revealed a surprising incident from the Asian Wrestling Championships in May.
    by Shraishth Jain @shraishth_jain
    News 2 days ago

Aamir Khan-starrer sports biopic Dangal has been on a record-breaking spree lately, becoming the first Indian film to cross the $300 million mark in box office earnings last month. And just six days later, it crossed the Rs 2000 crore barrier to set another benchmark for an Indian film.

It is based on the real-life story of Mahavir Phogat, the legendary wrestling coach, whose character is portrayed by Aamir Khan. It depicts the inspiring tale of how he coaches his daughters – Geeta and Babita Phogat to becoming world beaters and the different kinds of challenges they face in their journey.

However, the real-life Geeta Phogat, still feels that their path to becoming champions was not depicted in the right manner. She stated that the film does not adequately show the effort they put in during their younger days and that their training was much harder than what was shown in the film.

The 28-year-old said, “The hard work and training we did as children was not shown enough. It was all packed in one song and I feel that that aspect should have been highlighted more.”

She added, “Our father was even much more strict than what has been shown in the movie. Our school was a few kilometres away from our home and we used to travel on bicycles. But if we did not train as hard as our father wanted, he would take away the cycles and we would have to go walking.”

She also talked about Dangal’s success in China and narrated an incident that occurred at the recently concluded Asian Wrestling Championships in May.

“I’m glad people in other countries have been able to relate to our story,” she said, before adding, “In Delhi at the Asian Championships, the Chinese team went crazy when they saw me! They crowded me immediately and started clicking pictures.”

When asked about her plans of competing in future tournaments, she said, “Things have been difficult due to my previous injury but I am training really hard and putting all my efforts into making a comeback. My target is to win medals once again for the country – at next year’s Asian and Commonwealth Games.”

Phogat was speaking at the launch of the team jersey of the Gujarat Fortune Giants in Ahmedabad, who are one of the four new teams that will feature in the new season of the Pro Kabaddi League. Here’s hoping we see her back on the mat and winning titles soon!

  52. http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/prabhas-baahubali-2-fails-to-beat-hrithik-roshans-kaabil-in-being-everyones-favourite-movie-of-2017/

A couple of weeks back, we did a feature as to which movies we had liked in the first half of 2017 when it comes to Bollywood, though there wasn’t much to rake our brains about. So we chose these 7 movies – Kaabil, which has Hrithik Roshan’s better performances; Baahubali 2, which is of course, India’s biggest grosser; Hindi Medium, the delightful social comedy starring Irrfan Khan; Sachin: A Billion Dreams, an ode to the batting legend; Trapped, Rajkummar Rao at his best, The Ghazi Attack, India’s first submarine movie; and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt returning to entertain us.

While we expected Baahubali 2 to be the winner, because, of the same reasons it earned so much bucks at the box office, we were left surprised at the results. It was Kaabil which won the poll with a staggering 68% votes. The Sanjay Gupta movie was the clear winner with its closest competitor being Baahubali 2 that only got about 18% votes. The third position was held by Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Here are the poll results:

Here’s what our review said about Kaabil…”Hrithik Roshan takes his biggest career risk with Kaabil. For an actor whose name is synonymous with good looks, vanity and superstardom, to play a simple ordinary guy who isn’t bothered by the way he looks on screen or how many packs he has hidden behind his shirt, for him Kaabil is a huge risk. Kaabil works simply because Hrithik takes it to another level. His honesty and openness in letting us get a glimpse of Rohan’s world is endearing. Right from the opening frame where we watch Rohan make breakfast to the very last scene you are spellbound by Hrithik’s craft. Hrithik and Yami’s chemistry is outstanding the idea to cast these two opposite each other just fantastic. Sanjay Gupta’s style is sexy yet tame. He doesn’t go all out with lighting up the frames or focussing on the VFX, instead the spotlight is on the script and building up a strong narrative. Brothers Ronit and Rohit Roy shine in their roles and bring in the right baddie sauce to the dish. The dialogues are crisp and Hrithik’s monologue just when the interval sets in will get the theatre up on their seats. Also Rajesh Roshan’s soundtrack is a throwback to the 90’s when melody reigned supreme.”

So what do you think about the poll results? Do you think it gives us a fair idea of what really worked in the first half of 2017?

  54. Why was Katrina Kaif’s voice dubbed in Jagga Jasoos?
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Jul 15, 2017 – 3:50 pm IST

Here is a case for Ranbir Kapoor’s Jagga Jasoos to solve. Why are portions of Katrina Kaif’s dialogues in Jagga Jasoos done by another voice?

Audiences were shocked to hear a completely different vocal cord pitching in for Katrina in patches of the narrative. So, did she refuse to dub after her split with Ranbir Kapoor?

    Not so.

Says a source, “It was just that Katrina, though she tried hard, couldn’t get some of the dialogues right. Jagga Jasoos has a lot of very rapid-flowing play of words and she just couldn’t handle it. To get the required pitch Dada (Anurag Basu) had bring in another voice.”

In fact, Basu even incorporated a line of dialogue as an afterthought where a character explains Katrina’s Bengali character’s thick accent by saying she was brought up in the UK.

Whatever the explanation, the fact is, audiences can easily make out the difference, with or without Jagga’s sleuthing to help us decode the real Katrina voice from her imposter.

Katrina Kaif has been part of the Hindi film industry for 14 years. She should seriously consider getting herself a Hindi/Urdu teacher.

It is a very difficult movie to conceive and execute and no wonder they took this long. There are pace issues in the movie but its a very highly recommended watch as you won’t see such movies in Bollywood. Ranbir is spectacular but the real hero of the movie are the music director and lyricist. I cannot but wonder what Rahman would have done here though pritam has done a superb job. Kudos to basu for attempting this. The theatre I saw people loved it, my family also loved it but I dnt think this will do too well. It won’t be a disaster though as there will be an audience for this though

“The age difference between Jagga and Shruti is brushed aside, and it isn’t until the end that we get a hint of a romance – but the bigger issue is whether the real-life romance between the leads was instrumental in Katrina’s casting. How else could a character who’s supposed to sing and be a klutz go to an actress who has neither a musical sensibility nor a talent for physical comedy? What would Jagga Jasoos have been with a heroine who matched the hero?”

From that point till the end, it looked like still a work-in-progress, unfinished product and felt too long. Few shots looked like the raw footage was used as it is with basic editing. The beginning and the first book of Jagga adventure was awesome, the second one was good.

My experience is that, unless you are determined to hate it, there are chances that you may get drawn in and then quite enjoy the fantasy that the film is. Not to keep questioning, but go in with the flow, the songs and fantastic application by Ranbir Kapoor. Katrina Kaif is a lovely addition as a bad- lucky charm. This is a world of a hero with mystery solving capabilities which reminded me of the Hercule Poirot series watched on TV long ago, here he has an upturned hair in place of the upturned moustache of Poirot, the first two cases he solve had an old world charm to it. I wish it remained like that and became a franchise, but they had to bring in the arms drop, international terrorism and all the frills to make the hero cross over to the real world, but still, I won’t say it loses the fun factor ever in its running time.
The guy who played Ranbir’s father is quite endearing.

Tubelight Total Box Office Collection and Verdict:
Salman Khan starrer has completed its box office run after two weeks. The film is a failure at the box office.

Tubelight has a below average opening and the growth was missing over the weekend. This almost sealed the box office fate of the film. Yet there was some hope that Eid will provide the boost however that did not happen either. The word of mouth was on the negative side and the film crashed in the second week. Tubelight has even failed to cross Raees which was the highest grosser of the year. This is Salman Khan’s first failure since Veer.

Now coming to the economics, Tubelight is heavily profitable for producers. Yes, the distributors also face heavy losses but the producers will make profits even if they compensate the whole losses. Thus it is not a big failure as it is being made in the media. The worldwide gross is higher than films like Housefull 3, Airlift etc.

Jagga Jasoos Shows Very Good Growth On Day Two
    Saturday 15 July 2017 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jagga Jasoos has shown very good growth on Saturday of around 30-35% which will take the collections to a good 11 crore nett as per early estimates on Saturday. The first two days are very similar to Barfi! which grossed 8.18 crore nett on day one and 11.17 crore nett on day two. Here the collections will come out the same give or take 25 lakhs nett. The growth has come because the film is for the five metros which show strong growth and Saturday and the families and kids have come out in these cities. The trade was talking about a disaster on the lines of Bombay Velvet yesterday but its irresponsible as usual because you have to wait for the second day if not Monday. The two day business will be 20 crore nett plus and this film is not a Bombay Velvet that is certain.

The film still should have opened better but its solid second day business has put it in the running. If the Sunday business was to grow 20% plus again and be 13-14 crore nett then this film could actually surprise all. It could turn out that the growth is because the families and kids have come out on weekend and then the weekdays are tough as the film has little of offer the older audience. The growth is a huge plus for the film as it could have fell flat due to the alien presentation and storytelling style of the film so however the growth has come it has come and the film will post a decent weekend.

    • If only they would have manage to keep the April release date, kids summer vacation in India would have helped immensely. Like Sat/Sun kids came out and it can be seen in collections over the weekend. From monday, there will be drop. If it was summer holidays, it could have sustained better.

    • Good to see 30% growth on day 2. It may not be that big by pure numbers or wrt its big budget, but it shows that the film has found some acceptance among the urban audience.

I think Disney went the right way by limiting its release. A wide release would have spread widespread negativity due to low occupancy and for the movie not working in a large number of single screens in the interiors.

On a different note, Disney had the same release strategy for Jungle Book. With similar screen count and distribution, that movie opened to 10 cr on day 1, had a weekend of 40 cr and ended at around 190 cr. Of course it was no ordinary hit but a bonafide blockbuster that did 4.75 times its opening weekend in its entire run.

Jungle Book showed that a city centric plex blockbuster can do 200 cr in today’s times if loved by its audience. I have said this before, that TZP in today’s times would have done around 250 cr with a similar release strategy (it did 6.5 times its opening weekend!).

We will have to see how far it goes from here. The real test for WOM will start Monday onward. An open second week may have helped.

Despite all the delays and stuff, he has managed to get good reviews for his acting and the film has opened decently with day-to-day growth over opening weekend. As a star-actor his job is done (but not as a producer, which is another story).

If the WOM is indeed mixed and the film does not trend well from here, the blame should mainly go to Basu.

  66. New data from comScore, a Virginia-based analytics firm, indicates that Hollywood is having a tough time in China. From Jan. 1 to June 30, Chinese cinemas played 24 movies from Hollywood, generating $1.76 billion in ticket sales. In the same period a year earlier, the country let in 22 Hollywood movies, which collected about $1.73 billion.

That is a 1.7 percent increase — a far shot from 35 percent, the figure for all imported movies. Films from countries other than the United States made up the difference. One was “Dangal,” a Bollywood drama (partly financed by an Indian subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company) that collected a runaway $191 million in China in May.

Then came the phase of 4 years where he could not win any slam at all. He was regularly making it to SF and Finals. It was heartbreaking to see him lose out to Djokovic twice in Wimbledon finals during this period. But maybe all that vulnerability has made his fans empathize with him more. Its just a sheer pleasure and v inspiring the way he has played this year.

I think folks are easily going overboard on this. Federer in my fav tennis player too but its easily for anyone to analyze that he’s been the same player in last 5 years (though he played marginally better this year) and he was anyways in Top 4 always. Only real threats to him are Murry and Djokovic (& Nadal to an extent) and both ranked above him in this tournament and Nadal below him. Both Murray and Djokovic went down coz of injuries and if they were fine, it would have been yet another SF or Final reach for Federer as last 4 years. As simple as that. Unless he had defeated Djokovic/Murray in Final, the win is incomplete and not fair to call it dream victory but still good for record books.

        • Physical fitness is very important when entering these matches. We should applaud Federer for keeping fit throughout. And the finalist defeated Federer twice previously. So he could have turned into another Murray.

        • Yeah, at some quarters there is talk that Fed had it easy this time. It is not his fault that Cilic broke down under the pressure (with the pretext of a blister!) and Federer did not make it any easy for him. He played like a true champ, give it to him or not. Djokovic pulled out and Murray/Nadal crashed out. And I think it is pretty clear that Federer is playing way better (and more confident) than last 4 years. It is a different ball game to hang around playing SF/Finals in major slams than to consistently win the majors.

And one must be not be following the ATP world tour this year to make a statement that Fed is playing at the same level as last 4 years. He has won 5 titles out of the 7 tournaments he had participated this year! That is the dominance of the ‘old’ Federer, when he used to win everything coming his way.

As for Djokovic, he is likely to take time out after his injury. It is unlikely to be Federer vs Djokovic at the US open this year. If Djokovic indeed makes a comeback, I can bet Federer will crush him with his current form.

Last Wimbledon, Federer suffered a knee injury that ended in a first major surgery of his career and a forced six months break off the courts. There was talks among the tennis fraternity that this may as well be the end of aging Federer. And he rounded off the entire year with a win at Wimbledon 2017. If this is not cinematic stuff, then I am sure JHMS surely is!

There’s no relation or connection between any of these and everything can be important or not depending on the person’s interest.

        • I agree that was a bad analogy (tennis vs movies). I am a bit pumped up after Federer got his 8th Wimbledon. Excuse me.

Anyways, looking at the ATP tour, there are 4 tournaments in the hard court season that leads up to US Open – Atlanta, Washington DC, Montreal and Cincinnati. Atlanta is too close to date and the smallest tournament, so I think Federer should skip that one and let the Wimbledon victory soak in. He should start his campaign at Washington DC at the end of this month and play through Montreal and Cincinnati. It will surely be a grueling and compact schedule for a month and half, and staying fit will be the key for Federer at 35 (or I guess it will be 36 by then!).

I have a feeling that we may have a Nadal vs Federer Final at US Open. 🙂

          Like

        • The best part is that he won Wimbledon without dropping a set. So he must be relatively fresh after the break he took during clay court season. He is playing well and it will be a question of his knee and legs getting him through the hard court season.

I believe its going to be a test for his athleticism more than his tennis skills at this point (with depleted competition, last time he made it to Finals he lost to Djokovic in 2015). If he does get to winning a third slam of this year, he will be able repeat that feat of 3 calendar slams, 10 years after 2007!

During 2006-07, I thought he will end up with 22 slam wins in his career. He may not get there, but a 20th win is a possibility at US Open this year.

Federer didn’t drop a set this year at Halle and Wimbledon. Last year Cilic had match point on him in QF, Raonic knocked him out in SF. This year they could not get close. His game has evolved for 2 years. Wimbledon 2016 were where problems were really.

If Murray or Djokovic take 6 months off and comeback to be better I’d be more astonished as they are more physical players. The adaptation in Federer’s game was very vivid since Autumn 2015. He’s sharpened his serve to be the best now (he’s proven being fast is not the best no longer), his variations are too subtle to describe.

Indeed 2012-16 he was still a great player but he mentally couldn’t beat Djokovic – 14 & 15 Wimbledon finals prime examples. There was a year he went out to Tsonga too. This year all big 4 were in tournament. Murray had an injury, Djokovic has a new coach and showed glimpses of his best (I wish the injury didn’t happen as I reckon a semi final Vs. Federer would have been great. I think though Federer would have won. Ifs, buts and maybes). Nadal – too much to ask him so late in his physical career to do the French-wimbledon back to back. Murray actually lost his match not due to injury but more in 2nd set, he was a break up and should close out from there to 3-0.

Most tennis players carry injuries. It’s a fact of all sports. This Wimbledon has highlighted this issue especially on first Tuesday when 2 players retired after 1 set against Djokovic & Federer to ensure they collect £35k for turning up.

Federer’s path to take time off for 6 months – I don’t recall this ever. Only Agassi’s reincarnation in 98 tells a more dramatic story really. But taking time out at 34 for 6 months is curtains in most sports. This guy came back to either the same or better level. Certainly stars have fallen for him but frankly in tennis terms he’s like an angel from the gods. 14 straight years he’s the ATP’S fans favorite (despite his reduced GS victories).

He’s impeccably managed the last year. A lot to learn for the other big 3. Nothing overrated at all. Only Serena Williams winning a slam whilst pregnant is more ridiculous!

The Sampras, Federer one is intriguing. On grass quite conceivable Sampras could dominate him; but the grass courts of 90’s were much faster than today. And that’s the only surface I’d see it being where Sampras dominates. French – quite possibly Federer is second best ever after losing so many finals to best ever. The hardcourts need a more rounded game than grass so I reckon Federer would figure it all out.

Of course Sampras was unbeaten after 37 odd matches at Wimbledon till little Federer turned up in 2001 and knocked him out (not the fairest comparison). But overall Sampras had huge weapons and mentally was tougher. I’m guessing non of that eras greats had a favourable win loss record against him. But his greatness is tainted by complete flop performance on clay. His game was not as subtle as Federer’s. He could probably blow Federer off the court on a given day. But I’d be hedging my bets on Federer’s all-round game. And I doubt history will place any player above him anyway. There was a chance between 10-16 that Djokovic or Nadal were threatening his 16-17 GS’s but every time he wins one he pulls ahead one more and stops them from winning the one he just won!

This era for me Federer even had the wool over him, the mocker, whatever when against these 2 players but it’ll be difficult to dispute he’s GOAT.

Sporting comparisons are fun. Barring Tiger Woods’ much publicised marriage break up it’s possible he’d have beaten Jack Nicklaus’ 18 GS record. But by doing what he did he’s golfing now is pathetic. 5 years ago I’d have said Messi, Tendulkar, Woods & Federer are lovely comparisons. They were all on or had reached that space where records were gone. Beyond that they/are the guys who mean most to their respective sports. Beyond numbers, culturally they played a crucial ambassador type role globally. They all had near competition who were considered equals for many reasons. Dravid/Ponting/Kallis/Lara etc. for Tendulkar. But the latter in the end holds the records and beyond that got the love globally, the playing style helped a lot. He was the media’s darling. By the end he was still a fairly close to premium batsman. The love of the sport was the greatest for him.

Likewise Ronaldo or Nadal/Djokovic have performed ridiculous 2nd shows to Messi’s and Federer’s show. The latter two just reinforce the regal, elegance to their sports. The former define hard work and determination etc nothing to be snoozed at. But they are not in the same love or adoration quotient of Messi or Federer and never will be.

Personally think fans love sports to be played in a certain fluid, even romantic manner. They get turned on by Federer, Messi or Tendulkar. There is a charm in the way they play on court and off court.

Looks like he is not going to exert himself too much during the hard court season. He only played Stuttgart and Halle for Wimbledon preparation. For US Open, he may just do Cincinnati! Lets see if he skips Canada or not.

He is really strategizing well here considering the age factor. If he goes on to win US Open, he may as well be rewriting the rules of ATP world touring for an aged pro. In his own words, he seems to be playing ‘part time’!

Btw, this time around I thought Federer was way more sober while talking about the future. Seems like the inevitability of retirement is catching up in his mind space. He keeps on talking about the importance of being healthy and the possibility of not being able to defend these titles next year due to injuries. I really hope he wins his 20th GS this year at US Open, cause it does not look like he will hang around for more than a year or two max from here onward.

I hope he opts to play Montreal. That will give him 2 straight weeks of match practice on hard courts before US Open. But that may run the risk of over exertion too. It is a fine call, and I guess his team knows the best.

Tendulkar was sitting next to and speaking with the current England Rugby coach, Eddie Jones in the royal box. Saw that. He seems to love all sports. And it’s good to speak with guys like Eddie Jones who has turned English rugby around 360 since he came in. Another anecdotal piece of evidence of the esteem Tendulkar is held in the UK. He’s been there many times.

My favourite moment of Wimbledon was Federer walking through the back meeting all these famous people who just want a piece of him. They had a comment on commentary where Federer was on some kind of most respect/trusted/admired poll globally and came 2nd to Nelson Mandela in 2011.

He even takes great pride in winning the ATP tournaments on the way! (Btw, he is near to 100 titles now!)

And yes, with the other top 3 having problems, his hanging around could well mean few more slams, who knows? Personally would love to some more GS Finals against Nadal and Djokovic, and Federer resting his demons against them.

Would be great to enter US Open as world’s #1 again. Good Luck with this great comeback!

Varun Dhawan performs on stage during the 18th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Festival. (AFP)

The ceremony’s hosts – Karan and Saif – took a dig at the Queen star when Varun joined them on the stage to receive the award for the best performance in a comic role for Dishoom.

Saif raked up the nepotism issue when he joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father, director David Dhawan. “You are here because of your pappa,” Saif quipped.

To which Varun replied, “You are here because of your mummy (referring to Sharmila Tagore).”

Soon, Johar joined them and said he was in the industry because of his father, filmmaker Yash Johar.

The trio then shouted, “Nepotism rocks”.

Saif and Varun then sang Bole chudiyaan Bole kangana from Johar’s film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…

But the director quickly reacted, saying, “Kangana nahi bole toh achha hai (It’s good you didn’t say Kangana).”

Overall fine movie, can do well but not exceedingly well. No repeat value so difficult to do over 100 crores but can go over 75 crores IMO.

He does very well for the given role but except few scenes, he is always singing or jumping/running or doing adventurous stuff. Make no mistake this is no Barfi performance, just coz one adds stammering to the character it doesn’t’ become award winning role. The less said about Katrina, the better. Best acting is by Saswata Chatterjee(Ranbir’s dad) in the whole movie!

I have seen bad movies in theater before .. and JJ is not even comes in bad category , but it is experiment which goes horribly wrong.

Ranbir, an orphan raised by a foster father, always speaks in Rhythmic couplets to avoid stammering. Not only he always sing but everyone around him join him singing. It was ok for first 10-15 minutes, but after that it was completely on my nerves. so much so that a few straight dialogue here and there in movie comes as relief and most of those are in second half. Plot of movie is similar to “Byomkesh Bakshi” , which it self was musical mystery but thankfully not lyrical like this. I loved BB, and even if I ignore irritating (or innovative ?) narrative style , JJ is not even close to brilliance of BB. JJ bored to death before interval .. and gave little respite in second half. Plot is simple .. Mystery of missing father in backdrop of terrorism. Problem with movie is that you have to hook to each frame to understand complicated proceedings, but execution is so boring that it is difficult to engage .. and here’s when audience got completely clueless about what’s going on.

On positive side, three songs are done very well. Ranbir acted well. Saswata (Bob Biswas Kahaani fame) was too good. Katrina looked old, bulky and wrinkled. She lost her earlier charm. CGI work is okay, cinematography is good.

Torture of first half is too grave to recover post interval despite some respite moments. Not recommended unless you want to experience this experiment (Also failed in Oh darling Ye Hai India) on big screen. Better watch Byomkesh Bakshi , a much superior musical mystery based on similar plot.

  75. Jagga Jasoos First Weekend Business
    Monday 17 July 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jagga Jasoos had a decent weekend of 31.75 crore nett from the point of view what the promos offered but the film has been three years in the making and is well over budget and from this side the collections are low. The film is not a Bombay Velvet for two reasons, one is that theatrical is far better and secondly there is digital recovery now which was not there a year or so back. The film is niche and may be more than the regular urban film like Dear Zindagi or Neerja as this offers nothing little for the mature audience and is mainly for kids. The business of Jagga Jasoos for the first weekend is as follows.

    Friday – 8,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 11,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 12,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 31,75,00,000 apprx

The film opened low on Friday but picked up well on Saturday which put in the running but Sunday was a downer as although there is around 20% growth, the growth had to come in the A centres like Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, Bhopal etc and these places which are key to long term success for a big budget film but they did not show growth as they should on a Sunday.

The Sunday business was critical and it had to be up there towards 14 crore nett rather than 12.50 crore nett. It may just be a 1-1.50 crore nett but makes a huge difference to the trend and also signals the film fetching a wider audience. Its a tough ask for a film of this huge cost to survive on five cities but that is what the film will have to do as the core Hindi film audience has not come on Sunday which was its big chance for some sort of success.

Just the same pattern. When collections on Sat improved everyone went wild with mixed WOM but in reality it was only few folks liking(liking me) liking the movie and majority not liking. I see WOM even worse than Tamasha for JJ. Even Sat’s upward trend is normal and not coz of good WOM. • What looked like mixed WOM initially has indeed turned out to be poor WOM in reality. It is difficult to gauge WOM in the first weekend anyways. The film has crashed consecutively on Tuesday too. But i futile to go after Ranbir with JJ flopping. He did well starting from BEH to YJHD. Then the speed-breakers have come in the form of Besharam, BV, Roy, Tamasha and now JJ. But he is still the darling of the media due to lack of competition. And the trade also bets on him more than anyone else among the younger generation. He has been working on big budget films even in his low phase. You dont get the chance to do that if the trade reckons that you are a goner. Dragon is again a big budget flick that he is starting next. Dutt has already fetched record distribution price from Fox as per reports, and is expected to be a biggie.

Ranbir should get worried if Dutt fails or turns out to be average. It is his big ticket to the next level. A failure or an under-performance here could potentially dry up his choices and chances, like what happened to Abhishek and Hritik.

          Like

      • So after YJHD in 2013, Ranbir has been in struggling for 1 big hit though he had ADHM but Karan/Pritam takes all the credit there.

        2013:
        YJHD – BB
        Besharam – Flop
        2015:
        Roy – Flop
        Bombay Velvet – Flop
        Tamasha – Flop
        2016:
        ADHM: Hit
        2017:
        Jagga Jasoos: Flop

Then 2018, we have only Dutt and then Dragon down the road.

Actually Ranbir should drop the super hero movie – Dragon- and pick up a safe project with Ayan Mukherjee. Superhero movies are risky when you are not doing well. He has enough age and time and he could have do that movie after 2-3 yrs once he has 2-3 clean hits. Ayan Mukherjee should have made something like YJHD to bail Ranbir out(also complete his trilogy out self-discovery, WUS, YJHD) and then plan the super hero film.

  79. Jagga Jasoos Goes Down Badly On Monday
    Monday 17 July 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jagga Jasoos has gone down on Monday with collections in the 3.50-3.75 crore nett range. The film is looking at a 55-60% drop from day one. The drop was on the cards after the film failed to go through on Sunday which was the critical day for the film. The film offered hope on a Saturday with a jump but it is a day where the target audience in metros comes out in force and it was mainly to do with that. Those levels were always going to be hard to sustain unless other parts came on board but that did not happen on Sunday.

The Monday business of the film has sealed its fate as with 35.25 crore nett plus in four days, the week may head to around 43 crore nett but that is not enough. The film will not even reach the 60 lakh footfalls that typical urban film like Neerja, Dear Zindagi and Kapoor & Sons get and these films are hardly appreciated by majority of the audience but what they dont have is the costs that are associated with Jagga Jasoos and that allows them to be safe commercially with limited appreciation.

The film is a huge downer for the director of the film but these directors who believe in the European storytelling style rather than an Indian one can always go this way. You might get a lucky Barfi! (Read Barfi Fluke Here) once but that sort of lucky lightening rarely strikes twice, well not in a small space five years for sure. The film is also another blot on the filmography of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif who are both on a bad run as the film failed to open on day one and by Sunday the content was already rejected in most places across India and the Monday number just rubber stamped that.

If Federer gives Montreal a miss, then Nadal would have a free run at Canada to notch up another 1000 points and become #1 by mid-August. Then Federer will have to win both Cincinnati and US Open to displace Nadal from the top of the charts. The rivalry is likely to spill over to the remaining ATP 1000 tournaments in Shangai and Paris in October. And it will culminate in the ATP finals in November at London.

Potentially Federer-Nadal will be competing at 5-6 tournaments in the rest of the year. Hope that they get to face-off each other as many events as possible. Interesting times and it really seems like we have gone back 10 years!

Federer hasn’t won here for nearly a decade. Cilic, Nishikori others to watch for.

Federer has motivation – to be #1 in rankings again. Plus winning #6 here pulls him clear of Sampras, Connors to be top in open era.

Federer I think would be oozing both confidence and motivation. 2 consecutive slams would boost anyone’s confidence, and for him these GS came after 5 years. As for motivation, he again creates a bunch of greatest records if he wins (oldest to become #1, 6th US open title, getting ahead of Sampras again, etc etc). Most times these factors are enough to push you through. Lets see how things stand at the start of the tournament.

Jagga Jasoos – A lovely novel concept but a miss fire.

I liked the idea of JJ. It’s strength lies in good casting (even Katrina). Ranbir does well on familiar territory. The story of Jaggo on a quest to find out what happened to his father intertwined with international weapons exchange is quite silly but it works in this world. For me the film misses on several crucial scores; being an out and out musical, the music is lyrically fun but not a particularly outstanding or memorable score, the film is simply not light hearted enough [scenes of Katrina’s ‘bad lucky’ are really the only laugh out moments], despite good concepts & storyline the storytelling is not pacey enough (the second half is a drag), there are very few swashbuckling fun madcaper scenes, the stammering is a hindrance to an extent (but I overlooked this after a while) & a subtle attempt at a social message falters.

Basically 4 years are not a complete waste as really the film needed a much better storyteller and upping the fun quotient more.

I wouldn’t recommend this unless you’re a diehard Ranbir fan or willing to test your patience – it does get rewarded but not fully. I expected a lot of more of a visual experience but it hardly comes. There is a part of me that thought at points this kind of ‘peace’ message intertwined with detectives, bad guys & dollops of comedy is right up Hirani’s street in a Munnabhai type film but this kind of film not this one in particular is up his territory, this given 4 years seems a lot of time & money wasted.

Ranbir is a lovely natural actor for sure, but he should have avoided this project. It feels like it could have parked the musical theme a bit and replaced with dialogues; the stammering was not crucial to have.

Madhur Bhandarkar, currently in the eye of a storm over his forthcoming film on the Emergency and Indira Gandhi, has questioned how Congress can get to decide the kind of movies he makes.

BTW Qurbani was on TV recently and I was surprised by the extremely, prolonged tribute that Sanjay Gandhi gets before the credits from Feroz Khan (ironically his father’s name too), who just stopped short of calling Sanjay an avatar of Christ. What devotion the Gandhi family aroused, forced or otherwise

      • LOL on avatar of Christ.
Qurbani released right after Indira Gandhi came back to power.
The tribute to Sanju however does not take away the fact that it is still a very enjoyable movie.

It seems, at least in the domain of mass media, that we are living in an age of binaries. Today in India, where sane voices taking middle ground on the issues of communalism, terrorism and nationalism are being drowned in the cacophony of social media trolls, the discourse is increasingly being shaped by extreme voices. This was more evident in the recent events that rattled the nation – from the attack on Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir to the communal riots in Basirhat, West Bengal. While the right-wing accused the “liberals”, “Leftists”, civil society and mainstream media of selective outrage, the “liberals” responded by blaming the right-wing brigade of stoking the communal fire, of deliberately blaming the minority community and posting fake news to justify the cause. Are we entering a new era of polarisation? Is there a justification in the charge labelled by right-wingers against civil society and liberals of selective outrage? Or are foot-soldiers of communalism taking it too far with communal elements running amok?

Dunkirk movie review: Christopher Nolan’s nerve-racking war drama is definitely the best blockbuster of 2017
        Bollywoodlife.com
        Sreeju Sudhakaran 7 hours ago
Whenever Christopher Nolan announces a movie, it is something that movie buffs await with bated breath. After having dealt with insomnia, magic, superheroes, dreams and space, he has now turned his sight towards Hollywood’s favourite and dependable subject, when they ran out of good ones – World War II. His latest cinematic venture is Dunkirk, a fictional retelling of a lesser told chapter in World War history. Now we have some really good movies in the war genre, courtesy Oliver Stone’s Platoon, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge and of course, Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. Does Dunkirk join these ranks of being one of the greatest war movies ever made? Bloody Hell, it does!

        What’s it about

The movie revolves around the army evacuation of the Allied soldiers at the Dunkirk beach during World War II, when Germany was having an upper hand over UK and France. The evacuation is shown through four different perspectives. First one is through one English soldier Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) who desperately tries to escape from the beach along with two other soldiers, a silent Gibson (Aneurin Barnard) and Alex (Harry Styles). Then there is Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) who is overseeing the evacuation but is frustrated to see the rescue ships being destroyed by the enemies. Third subplot centres around one of the rescue trawlers commissioned by UK to save the soldiers. The boat is captained by one Dawson (Mark Rylance), along with his son and his friend. On the way to Dunkirk, they rescue a lone survivor (Cillian Murphy) from a sunken U-boat who suffers from PTSD. The final track is about Farrier (Tom Hardy) a gutsy pilot who has two enemies to fight – enemy planes and a depleting fuel.

        What’s hot

I will start with a disclaimer – I am a huge fan of Nolan and his movies, even if a couple of them did fall short of my huge expectations (The Prestige and Interstellar). However, even without any personal bias, I can say this movie is a cinematic achievement that will change how people make war movies in future. Never has a movie in recent times so completely absorbed me in its proceedings as Dunkirk has, and I can’t even say I relished every minute of that. For this is not that sort of chest-thumping movie that will make you punch your fist in the air. At one hour 46 minutes, this could be Nolan’s shortest film (correct me if I am wrong here), and every minute of it leaves you breathless. And I mean it literally. Like the characters of this movie, even you would be gasping for air at the many claustrophobic moments in the narrative. Believe me, there are plenty. In short, Dunkirk is one nerve-racking experience that you should only go through in IMAX (it’s not in 3D, thankfully, because that gimmick isn’t needed here).

    • This is interesting data. Of all the 2000 screen releases in recent times, Airlift has clearly done best. It started with 12 cr Friday, grew to 14.5 cr Sat and had a strong Sunday of 17 cr. The weekend was a solid 40+ cr. It also repeated that 17 cr haul on Republic day holiday, which came in the middle of its first week. Overall it managed to almost triple its weekend collection to get to 125 cr, which was v good! Airlift BO is surely the best among Akshay’s current string of hits.

I think TEPK will also have a 2000 screen release (as JHMS is likely to retain bulk of its screens in week 2). It should target 40 cr weekend and try to triple it. This is the best case scenario for the film IMO.

“In my head, when I heard the script of ‘Pink‘, it was the story of three girls so, I had no insecurity. But I don’t want to comment on who got what mileage. I believe that films are made of characters and not on any one person,” Kirti told IANS.

“So the contribution of each character in the narrative makes the film interesting…no one can and should over-do each other,” she added.

Starting her career with the film Khichdi: The Movie in 2010, Kirti mostly acted in films with an ensemble cast.

“In this film (‘Indu Sarkar’), my character Indu has an ideological difference with her husband Naveen, played by Tota Roy Chowdhury. In those scenes, his powerful performance was equally important as that of Indu to establish the ideological and emotional conflicts.

“I just happened to play the title role, but when everybody plays their part beautifully, the film looks perfect in entirety.”

Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, the film deals with the Emergency imposed in 1975.

“I think apart from me, everyone was easy going and playful on set, laughing on Madur’s jokes and all…he has the ability to tell a complicated story in an easy and realistic manner,” said Kirti.

The controversial film is releasing on July 28.

  86. REVEALED: Kamal Haasan’s never-told-before experiences with Rajesh Khanna
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Jul 18, 2017 – 10:43 am IST

No one knew Rajesh Khanna well enough to be called a close friend. The first superstar of Indian cinema had no friends, only cronies, yes-men and sidekicks.

However Mr Khanna did form an incredibly strong bonding with the doyen of Tamil cinema Kamal Haasan. They spent many hours together ruminating on life and success.

Recalls Kamal Haasan, “I refused to call him ‘Kaka’ like everyone did. I was willing to call him ‘Bade Bhaiyya’ or Mr Khanna but not ‘Kaka’. That infuriated him. We spent many, many hours together. I was this ‘upcoming actor from the South’—that’s how he introduced me in Mumbai. He was the undisputed King of Hindi cinema.”

Since Rajesh Khanna did a lot of South Indian remakes he was often in Chennai. That’s how the friendship started. “We spent a lot of time discussing cinema and life. He would sometimes get philosophical about the inconsequentiality of life. Once we went to a movie together. It was a mediocre American film called The Swarm and I decided to take him to a theatre at the heart of the city. He didn’t know we were going to a public screening. He probably hadn’t been to a public theatre since he became a star. When we reached things were okay. He enjoyed the mediocre film thoroughly and refused to leave until the end titles. That’s when I panicked. This was Rajesh Khanna, THE star of the millennium. If audiences got to know he was present there would be a stampede and blood on my hands. But Mr Khanna refused to listen. He stayed on till the end. The inevitable happened after the show. All hell broke loose, as audiences realized he was there. I became THE Rajesh Khanna’s bodyguard and security officer as I took him through the crowd. His shirt was torn. But he was enjoying himself thoroughly. He giggled and chuckled like a child.”

Rajesh Khanna’s better-half Dimple Kapadia gave her friend Kamal Haasan (the two were pals ever since they co-starred in Ramesh Sippy’s Sagar) a piece of her mind. “She wanted to know what was I thinking when I took him to a public screening. Anything could have happened.”

Rajesh Khanna watched a lot of Kamal Haasan’s films for remake rights. One of Kamal Haasan’s celebrated films Sigappu Rojjakal was remade as Red Rose. One fine day the phone rang in Kamal Haasan’s office. “This was the era of the landline phones. My personal assistant, a big Rajesh Khanna fan, was over the moon as God himself asked him about his wellbeing. Mr Khanna announced he was doing a remake of my film Sigappu Rojjakal, and that the mahurat was the very next day and would I please send him the cap that I wore for my character, since he wanted to wear at the Mahurat and in the film. I agreed—who said no to Rajesh Khanna?! He also commanded me to be present at the Mahurat in Mumbai the next day. I protested saying I wasn’t needed. He insisted he wanted to introduce me as the upcoming star from the South. Anyway the cap was sent from Chennai to Mumbai by hand delivery (there was no courier those days) by a man who unfortunately, turned out to be a fan of both Rajesh Khanna and Kamal Haasan.” The fan decided he didn’t want to part with the precious cap. Laughs Kamal, “Mr Khanna was livid. ‘Since you were coming why couldn’t you just bring it with you?’ Many other caps were brought forth. But he wanted only that one cap.”

Kamal was fascinated by Rajesh Khanna’s aura. “I never wanted to be a star. I observed him. Our friendship came to a sorry ending at a party in his house where he was less than polite. But my friendship with Dimple is forever. It’s like the lines from the immortal Geeta Dutt song ‘Beqaraar dil iss terah miley jiss terah kabhi humjuda na they.’ Whenever we meet, no matter how long is the gap it’s like we had never stopped meeting. I know we’ll remain friends for as long as we’re alive. My daughter Shruti will make sure of that. She’s even fonder of Dimple than I am.”

To add a super strong music score could have made a huge difference. Can one imagine all the Disney greats without their musical scores? For that alone it’s too big a miss fire in that sense.

The first half and back story are done well. SPOILER
I found irony at the interval when Katrina’s character who is narrating the story to children says – let’s take a break for 15 mins, you all look a bit bored. Bummer! I reckon in some cinemas that probably was the march out call. I resisted, to watch it all as it’s clearly a film that requires delicate patience and if I cared more for lyrics and rhymes I’m sure I’d have liked it more.

about the film, didnt it look rushed once the father and son met..the busting of arms racket was done in one or two scenes. They cud have done away with some songs..as the whole film was a musical..and add some time more to the climax. It wasnt even clear how all the arms were exchanged by the duo.

My recall factor for the film is pretty low. But given the depth of the backstory and the journey – the whole second half felt odd, the ending was pretty quick. I think it’s obvious the second half is where the film goes wrong. Till then it was pretty watchable.

“It wasnt even clear how all the arms were exchanged by the duo.”

Thank god for small mercies! I can’t see how a sequel happens. This film has found little appreciation, Katrina & Ranbir are over and Ranbir needs some very safe films now. Ranbir looks so young here and to do the sequel 4-5 years down the line makes more sense but he’ll look older. They should have killed that scene altogether.

        • **Spoilers**

As I mentioned earlier I found only the 1st half unwatchable and the 2nd half was breezy watch but doesn’t mean it had any sense in the story. The main part of the ‘jasoos’ is not there and he just takes Katrina along hoping that her so called bad luck will help him find the way. She falls down the stairs as his father and finds the father’s hotel and then crashes the car to the same tree and found father’s staying place and even the rock at the climax and everything is just built on co-incidence. That is not what you expect from a ‘Jasoos’ kinda story. Jagga is literally doing nothing through the whole proceedings, he well might be a school boy only and not a Jasoos in the 2nd half. In the end we are told he switched lids of bombs/cakes and saved the world… yawn!!

Moreover his father was not even in danger and not held hostage when he sets to find out about him, he was fine and was planning to wrap up the case he started and then come back to Jagga anyways. So, all the search is actually futile and that’s the whole movie. Case 1 & 2 are just setup for this main case in the movie which actually is nothing from Jagga’s point of view and a very weak storyline for the movie.

        • jayshah Says:

I guess I agree generally that the treatment and reasoning is pretty water thin. But I found the backstory important as without it you don’t really get any context to Jagga’s life. In that sense the first half is really him learning to be a detective and being a conduit to the shoddy police force. This works. The entrance of Katrina and how Jagga takes to her via coincidence to personify his father is futile but it gives the light throwback scenes an entry into the film.

This whole journey of finding a lost one in a comedy format is 3 Idiotsesque, but it lacks that comedy intertwined with the social message that Hirani delivers with a click of his fingers. Basu has tried to cash in on the Barfi image which for me worked as both a Priyanka and Ranbir triumph with a very strong soundtrack. Here I think if you have 4 years maximum make sure the music is spectacular if not that present it in a more spectacular style. Just felt quite half baked musical in this sense. This kind of stuff is better suited for a Pantomime where you gag with your audience on stage.

If I made this film I’d have had Ranbir play his father’s role (beefed it out more – plenty of scope for that), have the child artist play that role as it is and somehow bridge that gap of the child being the protagonist to find his father (when he’s very young) with Katrina as an alias. It’s a children’s movie after all. The story is told from an adults view and leaves little room for comedy. I like Disney films minimally but from whatever I see they work generally as the protagonists are young and childlike, immature etc. Take lion king and Simba, all the young Disney Princesses etc. They are deceived in some way but go on a quest or return back to roots and find out the truths of life.

This totally reduces the cost and risk and an out and out childlike musical score seemed better suited. Even the brief stammering moments of little Jagga are more powerful and emotional.

        • The idea of child actor as protagonist sounds good. Should have worked, provided it was not a full fledged musical but maybe with extra songs if you have to. A controlled budget, a bound script and made in a year’s time – it could have worked wonders. There is always great scope for children’s films.

          SPOILERS
In this film it can work! Stammering is nothing but a brain deficiency or a neurological disorder so naturally in such cases other areas of the brain can become stronger. The father explains this to the child well how the left side of the brain is logical and right side creative. The kid could become a WizKid of sorts and be smart enough to be the one to construct the journey. Instead the brain scene is purposefully placed to find a way for the kid to speak via singing which really is no huge science. Film wouldn’t change much except you lose the best character actor in the film who plays Ranbir’s father.

But that role is limited to brief flashbacks and the ending. It could easily have been beefed up. You could have a parallel story of sorts – why the father leaves (Ranbir’s story as the father) & the child’s quest (which is the essence of the story). It’s more powerful than an adults tale.

The Overseas market has fared worse than the Indian market this year with just two films going over $10 million and one was the dubbed Bahubali – The Conclusion. Raees despite being an action film that too not the gloss type stood tall due to the starpower of Shahrukh Khan. Tubelight was poor despite a Eid release, it did out perform in Gulf but business even there business was just about average. Gulf was probably best for the film compared to any other circuit be it India or Overseas.

There were four films that could be called hits in Overseas (Bahubali – The Conclusion, Raees, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Hindi Medium ) while three can be called average (Kaabil, Jolly LLB 2 and Mom). There are probably just two more chances left for a $20 million film with Jab Harry Met Sejal and Tiger Zinda Hai and it would be a total disaster if neither reach. Below are the top ten grossing films of Overseas in 2017 till date. (All collections for Hindi language only)

    1. Bahubali: The Conclusion – $14,360,000

    2. Raees – $14,100,000

    3. Tubelight – $7,500,000 (expected)

    4. Badrinath Ki Dulhania – $5,830,000

    5. Kaabil – $5,080,000

    6. Jolly LLB 2 – $4,930,000

    7. Jagga Jasoos – $2,750,000 (expected)

    8. Mom – $2,500,000 (expected)

  89. So after Tubelight, Bollywood gets another BO turkey in JJ. Tough going for the industry!

All eyes on JHMS now. Sold at a low price, this reportedly needs only 125-130 cr for a Hit and 150-160 cr for a Superhit tag. 200 cr and SRK gets his much needed Blockbuster! But that is only the trade aspect.

What the doctor has ordered for the day, is a well trended movie with positive WOM. So it should minimally triple its weekend (first 3 days) collections. Expecting that it does 65-70 cr weekend, it should get to 195-200 cr range if well liked. Reasonable bar for JHMS?

    Like

    • Don’t be surprised if it folds around 80 crore total. I keep saying, take out SRK, and you’ll have hard time justifying this movie making 25 crore weekend and 50 crore total.

      Like

      • and I keep saying that’s a redundant statement! Take out any star from a film and obviously you get a much lower total. If this weren’t the case why would there be stars at all?!

        Like

      • @Z – Will be v surprised if JHMS folds up at 80 cr. SRK still has a lot more pull than the younger lot and this is his strength romcom genre. Since it looks like an urban film, 120-125 cr is reasonable expectation.

But as I said, if it is well liked and accepted film, it should be able to triple its weekend business. SRK really does not have a safety net at this point, with Dwarf being much more risky than JHMS. So I guess a lot more rides on JHMS than say Tubelight or JJ.

  90. Essaying Sanjay Dutt’s character became a sickness for Ranbir Kapoor!
    Pratibha Devasenapathy | Jul 17, 2017, 01.39 PM IST
Ranbir Kapoor’s recent release might not have done wonders at the box office, but his performance like all the other times was loved by all. He is now all set for his upcoming movie on Sanjay Dutt’s biopic by Rajkumar Hirani. As opposed to before, the movie will now release in 2018 instead of Christmas 2017.

A few weeks ago, Ranbir Kapoor’s looks from the Dutt biopic were leaked online, and ever since then, the audience has been waiting for more information and developments on this much-awaited Bollywood movie. It is quite a tough task to play someone on the big screen, especially when you know that the person whose character you are portraying will watch you enact them.

Ranbir recently spoke about his struggles to get into the skin of Sanjay Dutt for the movie, and how long it took for him to achieve that look. He told a leading daily, “Yeah! We worked really hard at it, doing four months of prosthetic (make-up) trials, lots of disappointments, thinking that it’s not going to work out. But you need to put in that time and effort. It’s a daunting task to play someone like Sanjay Dutt, who everybody knows anyway.”

Since Sanjay Dutt was a drug addict, and he admitted to the fact as well, a scribe asked Ranbir if he would take drugs to get a true sense of the character. Ranbir replied that he wouldn’t do that for the same reason that he would not kill somebody to know how it feels. He said, “Playing Dutt, I’d want to see how I can get into the soul of the character. The look is easy…”

On being asked more about his experience shooting the role, he said, “It was surreal for me. You’re acting like him, and the director calls cut, you look up, and suddenly there’s Sanjay Dutt actually sitting behind the monitor! But then I’d got so obsessed with him. Every time I’d see him, I’d start observing him like a hawk — the way he scratches his beard, twitches his eye, drinks water, hugs… It’d become a bit of a sickness for me. But that obsession is necessary for acting, or any form of art — that madness to get something right. You may still fall flat on your face, but it’s necessary.”

Deepika Padukone has inspired me a lot.

Her sister (Anisha) was in my school, and in my (school) bus.

Sometimes Deepika would come to pick her up.

I would see her and feel, ‘This girl is so beautiful, I wish I can be like her.’

Sometimes I used to see her at the school’s annual day and all and would always notice her.

Some people, like my make-up artist, tell me that sometimes I pose like her.

Maybe it is because I watch her so much.

  93. Will Hrithik & Yami’s Kaabil Get A Remake In Hollywood?
Kaabil, widely panned by critics and viewers, is allegedly about to get its own Hollywood remake.
    By

    July 18, 2017

Creative folks from Bollywood as well as Hollywood often take inspiration from each other, then blatantly deny it in the fear that acknowledging it will get them in legal trouble. Bollywood has often faced flak for making a career out of allegedly “copying” Hollywood and Korean productions.

Kaabil, widely panned by critics and viewers for its cringeworthy and problematic portrayal of rape survivors and male entitlement, overacting and a ridiculously ancient revenge plotline, is allegedly about to get its own Hollywood remake. The film is itself inspired by films like Blind Fury and Broken.

Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox has now approached the actor to procure the remake rights of the thriller. Coincidentally, the actor headlined Bang Bang (2014), the official Bollywood adaptation of the Hollywood studio’s film, Knight And Day (2010).

While talking to mid-day, Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta confirmed the news, “It’s true that Fox, through Tomas Jegeus [president, Fox International Productions], has approached Hrithik. Even though the developments are too premature to talk about at this moment, it is an honor for the team. What is also exciting is that Kaabil has been declared the best film of [the first half of] 2017 via an online poll. So, it’s a double win for us.”

An insider gave some info about the same thing to the daily, he said, “Before he jetted off to New York, Hrithik was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Tomas, who wanted to buy the remake rights of Kaabil. They feel the film is a pure entertainer and has all the ingredients for a great Hollywood film. Hrithik will discuss the matter with his father when he is back.”

Rakesh Roshan also seemed excited to explore the opportunity, he said, “The screenplay was hard-hitting, and the drama, gripping. It would make for a wonderful Hollywood adaptation, given that it has all the necessary emotions. It struck gold at the box-office because it was about a visually-impaired lover seeking revenge.”

  94. Karan, Saif, & Varun Dissing Kangana at IIFA Is an Example of Privileged Bros Being Bullies
    by Kashika Saxena
    17 July, 2017

Bollywood awards shows are not known for their smart, nuanced writing. Given how long they are, it’s only natural for the hosts to do several comedy bits, but that comedy is often sexist, shame-y, or downright cringe-worthy. Last night, the IIFA awards were held in New York, and the hosts, Saif Ali Khan and Karan Johar cracked many jokes at the expense of their own work and industry. But there was one joke that did not sit well at all, and that was the one on nepotism. At this point, the Nepotism in Bollywood debate is so huge that it should be written with a capital N. And if IIFA was anything to go by, we won’t stop talking about it any time soon.

Here’s a quick recap: Earlier this year, Kangana Ranaut and Saif were on an episode of Koffee with Karan, where she called Karan the flagbearer of nepotism. At the time, Karan laughed it off, but in true man-baby style, went on to diss Kangana on several platforms in the aftermath. Kangana did not back down, and soon every star kid was being asked about it, and without exception, everyone’s answer infuriated the public and defied logic. The latest being Ranbir Kapoor, who, in the AIB podcast released earlier today, tried to turn it around to make it seem like he’s a victim of nepotism.

Cut to the IIFA awards, where Varun Dhawan was being awarded for his role in Dishoom. After he received the award, this happened:
Saif: You are here because of your pappa.
Varun: You are here because of your mummy.
Karan: And I am in the industry because of my papa.
    Together: Nepotism rocks!

Not only was this hard to watch, it was also infuriating to see three very, very privileged men throwing their privilege in our faces. But they weren’t done. Varun asked Karan, “What was that song? Bole chudiyan, bole kangana.” To which, he replied, “Woh na hi bole toh better hai. Woh bahut bolti hai.”

Now, it’s important to understand that Kangana, because of who she is — a smart, fearless, outspoken woman, will always rankle powerful men. This doesn’t mean that Saif, Karan, or Varun wish her ill, but they certainly hate her guts. Traditionally, men are used to not having to explain themselves to women. They don’t have to worry about a woman’s opinion, because it’s been considered irrelevant. And now here we are, in the 21st century, having women’s marches and calling people out on their own show. No wonder these men are losing their shit. No wonder these 40-year-old men (and a much younger but equally privileged Varun) don’t know what to do with these women.

If a man had made a comment like Kangana’s, say a Sushant Singh Rajput or a Rajkummar Rao, would they have reacted similarly? In all probability, yes. But there’s something more sinister about three bros coming together on a world stage to make fun of a woman for saying something perfectly logical, because people will always be more uncomfortable when they think a woman is overstepping her boundaries. That is the very definition of bullying. Karan is a smart businessman who understands films, Saif has done some good acting, and Varun has… abs, but Kangana is more talented than all three of them combined. And yet, she will never be as powerful as them in the film industry because she’s a woman and did not have a famous surname until she made it one herself. Instead of using their privilege to help her and others who might not have an influential background, they often spit in the face of her talent and mock her.

Salman Khan often says things which are a thousand times dumber than anything Kangana can ever say, yet he comes for the centennial episode of Koffee with Karan. Karan will walk on hot coals before he treats Salman the way he treats Kangana. There is nothing wrong with promoting your own people, that’s human, but there is something very, very wrong with tearing other people down every chance you get.

        • jayshah Says:

Both sides are right to some degree. There is a fascination with star children and it’s difficult to get away from it. This doesn’t always give great results. To some degree they are also judged more harshly yet they’ll be given way more chances too. It’s a huge network and as it’s art it’s more acceptable than in sports; the latter results are objective and obvious. In cinema you just keep trying to flog a dead horse, whilst ignoring the basics of thorough auditions. Kangana has raised it too venomously to the extent she’s alienated herself from the industry. She is playing a martyr to an extent, I guess she feels so strongly about it that she’s prepared to screw her career over it – all the more power to her for taking a firm stand.

This stuff is scripted so Varun’s apology means jack shit. He knows what he was doing and apologising afterwards seems a sly move to be in both corners when it’s clear which side he’s on.

Saif probably just wants exposure as his career has nosedived since 2013. Anyway he’s use to ridiculing the industry as a host for a long time.

Don’t expect much more from likes of KJo – for someone who is a minority in terms of sexual preferences he should know better to wage war against what is a minority in the film industry, the ‘outsider’. He should know how that feels, especially when all his films preach about being emotionally connected. Total scumbag.

I think it was a bit too overlaid with meaning in some respects. There’s only so much this kind of franchise (or Batman or whatever) can take. It was certainly very well made. I did appreciate the care they took in many ways but the second one was a better balance between genre conventions and the ‘deeper message’. It’s part Western, part adventure. Overall a worthwhile effort, just not an outstanding one. At least in my view. I would split the difference here between the very positive reviews and someone like Lane who while admiring the film’s strengths said the problem was ‘it ain’t much fun’!

Despite the fact that August 25 will see the release of Sidharth Malhotra–Jacqueline Fernandez’s action entertainer A Gentleman and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s quirky rustic drama Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, YRF is taking the chance and clashing Qaidi Band with these two films. It is seen as an attempt to release the film before Lucknow Central hit theatres and its promotions gear up.

Hence, Qaidi Band has a first-mover advantage since its releasing first. In fact, Lucknow Central might be heavily affected, especially if Qaidi Band gets appreciated by moviegoers. Last year, both Sultan and Dangal seemed similar as both dealt with wrestling and were based in Haryana. Dangal arrived around five months after Sultan during which the latter’s wave had died down. If Lucknow Central arrives in just three weeks after Qaidi Band, it can prove detrimental.

He also admitted that IIFA was not his smartest gig yet as they tried to make the most of a poor script in which the jokes were unfunny. Saif further added that he was disturbed after the show as the humour could have been of high calibre and certainly wasn’t befitting of his work and kind of the work he is doing now.

Speaking about Kangna Ranaut, Saif praised her saying he has a lot of respect for her and he is aware about the hard way she has achieved her position in the industry. He said that they have a mutual admiration for each other. He added that he understood her stance on nepotism but he has a different take on it. It admitted that just because people knew his parents but that did not make his ride easy. He said that he had starred in terrible films and that phase lasted for a long time for him.

In the candid conversation, Saif Ali Khan further talked about IIFA backlash and the joke about Kangna Ranaut and nepotism. He said that it was a just joke and nothing more should be read into it. If they had given more thought to it, they could have finished the long ongoing public discourse on nepotism more decisively.

His own favourite did the long slog. This feels much more like him being sexist and exerting his male dominance over a deranged female more than anything else. If this were Akshay Kumar safe to say KJo would be needing medical attention by now.

So time has come to turn the page on the Khans and look beyond…though there is not much to relish in terms of choice. 105. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently said that biopics in Bollywood are corrupted by commercial elements and that a person’s story should instead be shown as it is. Indian skipper M.S. Dhoni’s biopic was also termed as a ‘hagiography’ which intensified the debate that only the good and positive parts of a person’s character are depicted in movies based on their journey.
Now, with the much-awaited Sanjay Dutt biopic coming up, people started speculating that negative aspects like his drug addiction might not just be tweaked but might be completely omitted in the movie. This is possible because a source close to the project revealed that Sanjay Dutt and his marketing experts need to work on cleaning out his image after being the eye of so many major controversies. He said, “Since he came out of jail, he has been cultivating the family man image with vacations with his wife and twins and no late-night parties. Though he still enjoys his evening drinks, he has them at home. He hardly attends parties and seldom entertains too many guests at home for a sit-down dinner.”
He added, “There will be duplicitous periods from Sanju’s life defining the biopic. But now the sordidness would be sublimated. The trauma would be toned down. The biopic will be made accessible to Dutt’s young viewers. With drug dealers in Mumbai and Punjab catching them young, it is time for Dutt to tell the youth that it is not cool to dabble in drugs and play with guns.”
Dutt’s drug addiction won’t be shown in detail and his arrest and conviction for possession of arms during Mumbai’s 1993 blasts would focus on his ingenuity and innocence and not show him in bad light. His alleged affair with Madhuri Dixit will be completely omitted from the biopic and his ex-girlfriend Tina Munim’s character’s name would be changed.

Have you noticed that there’s a pattern of powerful men hitting self goals in a match against a green horn like Kangana? Could this be because – like another daddy’s son Adhyayan Suman explained – she “practises black magic” and is a “pishachini”? (The writer at the time of writing had no means of corroborating the claims though she did successfully stifle a laugh and half a giggle.)

Privilege and power are a heady cocktail and Kangana is taking on both, neat, on the rocks. Of course, Rangoon didn’t do too well – and in an industry where you are only as good as your last release – the claws came out from all corners.

Kangana was a chit of a girl who came to Bollywood sans money or filmy background and now looks around her, thoroughly unimpressed.

The privilege, the nexus, the herd mentality – none of it scares her. She is an outsider who continues to look unimpressed and refuses to take shit. But when three privileged men come together on stage to say “Kangana na hi bole toh achha” you know that she must have done something right

  109. Munna Michael gets ‘UA’ with 7 visual and verbal cuts
    BySubhash K. Jha

The fight sequences in Tiger Shroff’s new film Munna Michael have met with the censor board’s disapproval. It is reliably learnt that at least two of the lengthy fight sequences have been reduced drastically.

Says a source, “In one of the action sequences we can hear the repeated sound of bones being smashed while the expletive ‘Behenc…’ plays on the soundtrack. The CBFC has asked for both the sound of bone smashing and the Hindi expletive to be muted. In another fight sequence, a character is repeatedly hit with a rod. The CBFC has asked for the sequence to be reduced to one shot.”

In addition the CBFC has asked for cusswords like ‘F..king’, ‘Ghanta’ and ‘Pichwada’ to be removed. Scenes showing alcohol have been asked to blur the bottle-lable.

Says a source from the CBFC, “Tiger Shroff has a big following among kids. And we wanted to film to be accessible to children.”

We are privileged also in terms of getting an opportunity to meet a producer, which in itself is an advantage. But beyond that, only your talent can sustain you,” Saif Ali Khan added.

Saif then suggested how acting might also be in a family’s genetics. “It’s easy to confuse nepotism with genetics. Maybe there is something in the genes too that makes many of Raj Kapoor’s descendants actors or Pataudis cricketers. I think it’s actually eugenics and genetics that’s coming into play,” he said.
Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut in a still from Rangoon.

The actor also said that nepotism is being confused with campism: “Whatever it may be, this privileged versus the unaffiliated leads to a great deal of unfairness. Nepotism is also not to be confused with campism. What Kangana might be talking about is that people generally promote their own people,” he said.

    • According to producer Kamal Jain, Kangana insisted on shooting the scene herself, and not with the help of stunt doubles. Even though the scene was rehearsed numerous times, something went wrong. “Kangana had to duck when Nihar (Pandya) attacked her, but the timing went wrong and Nihar’s sword hit her forehead instead. It made a deep cut between her eyebrows. The drive to the hospital took a good 30 minutes, but she put up a brave front despite the pain and bleeding. Nihar was apologetic and felt terrible, but Kangana pacified him,” he said.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Kangana said, “I am a bit embarrassed to be thrilled to have a battle scar on my face. Also, people from my team have been telling me that it’s like that Peshwa teeka that Manikarnika wore. It’s a bit dramatic but I am excited that my face was covered in blood and I got a genuine and authentic glimpse of the Queen’s life.”

Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi, is scheduled for release in 2018. It remains to be seen if this delays the production significantly.
