I lost confidence after acid attack. She held my hand. Is that nepotism?
In a tweet, Simran writer Apurva Asrani spoke about how we all are guilty of nepotism, including Kangana Ranaut. He wrote that she first hired her sister Rangoli as her manager and is now promoting her brother. Coming to the actor’s rescue, Rangoli Chandel, sister of Kangana, took to Twitter and gave a suitable response to many on nepotism debate.

Kangana Ranaut coined the word nepotism on Karan Johar’s show, calling the director the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ in Bollywood industry. Since then, the word has become a rage and has given rise to innumerable conversations around how justified it is to be favoured by relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs. While we just thought the entire controversy has died, Karan brought it back while hosting the IIFA 2017. Just like everybody else, Apurva Asrani, the writer of Kangana’s next film Simran, gave his opinion on the term and explained how everyone, including Kangana, is guilty of nepotism.
He wrote in a tweet, “I hired my brother as addnl writer on my new film. #Kangana hired her sister as manager & now promotes her brother. All guilty of #nepotism?”
While Kangana has not given any sort of reaction, her sister Rangoli was quite miffed and thought to give it back to all those for whom Kangana has become their claim to fame.

Kangana nt only got my treatment done but saw to it that I gained my confidence back, she held my hand and took me to the sets. I am her sister and i am with her in that capacity, my brother is a pilot and don’t you dare to bring him in to this. You are after your 5 mins fame which you don’t deserve so please calm down and Relax. Drinking coffee n watching films with your own little brother is not nepotism you emotionally illiterate person.That’s called Love .#sigh which u lack,” she wrote explaining the term nepotism and the difference between what Kangana’s thought behind hiring her was.
She later questioned other publications, “As far as I m concerned, when I had acid attack I lost all my confidence then she held my hand and got me back to life. Is that cald Nepotism?? I mean realy? Can you leave Kangana alone?hanging around with your own brother is not called you fool.”
In an earlier interview, Apurva had told indianexpress.com “I think the IFFA gag was in bad taste and people are right in condemning it. But the nepotism debate must move beyond making villains of the privileged. It is a problem with the system, across all sectors, and we need to realise that we are all guilty of it. When we hire our trusted family members and friends, use our clout to refer a friend, we are all nepotistic.”
I think you mean pic 16 and the guy is Mac Mohan.. he’s pretty familiar to everyone watching movies in 70’s. He’s also uncle of Raveena Tandon who was the chief at National Awards once and made sure Raveen won the Best Actress National Award for Daman. His last movie, I believe is Luck By Chance where ironically he’s invited as chief guest and asked to repeat his famous dialogue from Sholay.. which is just 2 words “Poore Pachas Hazaar”.
He’s a true blue legend! Impossible to think of the 70s without him. There were others like him too. All the supporting or bit parts. Leone famously spent more time casting for his bit roles than his major ones. I can understand this. The right kind of supporting cast adds texture to the film.
He got famous as Sambha from Sholay.. and that’s 1975 and then innumerable films in next 5 years and then 80’s and 90’s. Its said he did over 200 films. But to my mind, he’s part of the 70’s masala template film making..
I knew of the face. Many old VHS or films that parents would watch in early 90’s had that face. And some bald Caucasian dude. I remember every movie started with similar opening credit music. I can’t find it on YouTube, may have been a VHS thing only.
What pictures. I was totally transposed to my childhood. Miss those days. Early 80s are dearest to me. Best time of my life. Well, Thank you Yakuza. Returned back to 2017 with a couple of shots of Single Malt.

Harmanpreet Kaur has smashed 171 runs Not Out in 115 balls in total score of 281/4. She had century in 90 balls and then in next 25 balls she hit 71 runs.
Mainly due to background music. I guess it’s due to IMAX auditorium music being loud but my God, there was hardly 3 minutes of silence in total in the entire movie. Otherwise it’s constant loud music and the part that really killed it is the constant loud bass thru out the film. It really wasn’t necessary. Not a single dialogue was audible.
It actually drained me out by the time movie ended.
The movie is well made. More of a thriller than war film.
But I’ll take Saving Private Ryan any day over this. Not sure what all critics are going gaga over.
Would love to hear Satyam, Master, Sanjanas and others thought on it after they see it.
Satyam, I had told you to go see it in IMAX but if you know the IMAX at your place is loud, skip it. Go see it in regular screen, hopefully the loudness will come down little.
Damn.. didn’t expect it at all. I already have tickets for IMAX. The last 2 movies I saw in IMAX were Interstellar and Gravity and both had more silence than dialogues. Maybe will take some cotton for my ears! 🙂

It was VERY loud. Too loud in fact. It might be the loudest movie I’ve ever seen.
I don’t mean like a gun shot here or an explosion there, I mean sustained loud noises for minutes at a time. For large sections of the movie the soundtrack and the effects merge in this cacophony of noise and it becomes difficult to differentiate between any of the sounds. On a number of occasions it actually distracted me from what was taking place on screen.
If you have trouble with prolonged loud noises you might consider waiting to see this until you can control the volume.
This is really unfortunate since I thought the movie was great otherwise. I’ve been a fan of Nolan’s for a while now but man I wish the guy would allow more space in his sound mixes.
EDIT: I want to promote the advice below of taking earplugs. The goal is not to stop people from seeing the movie, as I said before, it’s really great, I just wanted to warn people who might have issues with loud sounds.
Okay am reading user reviews and twitter and everyone’s complaining about the loudness. I’m in two minds now. I know movie will be great but I’m not fan of too much loudness especially if everyone is complaining. Will think over and decide by tom afternoon.
On other hand I’m huge fan of Nolan and seen all his movies first day first day at least past decade and own all the Blu rays. Dunkirk was the only movie which didn’t impress me when announced coz of the war theme but the recent reviews have let me take a look. I’m also not a fan of too much noise. I was tortured during the 1st half of Jagga Jasoos with continuous songs. Maybe I’ll cancel the tickets now.

Ranbir will do well to keep himself out of Basu’s biopic on Kishore Kumar.
The reason he can ride through this series of flops is because the new guns have still some distance to catch up. Tiger’s Munna Micheal and Arjun Kapoor’s Mubarakan are both expected to do around 50 cr. Varun’s Judwa2 is expected to do 100 cr. Ranveer, even after BM, is expected to fetch only 150 cr from Padmavati.
Ranbir had already delivered a near 200 cr grosser in YJHD quite a while back. Yes, he had flops in between, but then again the Dutt biopic is expected to do 200-250 cr business. Another reason he is quite safe is because the likes of Abhishek/Hritik have fizzled out. And Ranbir is perhaps the only viable competition that Khans have in their fifties. If JHMS under performs, and Dutt clicks – it will give Ranbir a long shot at breaking the Khan hegemony in Bollywood for good.
On the other had, if Dutt flops/under-performs, he will be in deep trouble.
Btw, not saying everything will be hunky dory for Ranbir if Dutt clicks big. Abhishek/Hritik also threatened to take it to the next level when Dhoom 2 (2006) became one of the biggest hits of noughties. But they both lost their ways. In the meantime Aamir tasted tremendous success in TZP and Ghajini with their respective audience in 2007-08. And Wanted/Dabangg in 2009-10 gave a new lease of life to Salman. Both went on from there to dominate this decade.
But Dutt can create an opportunity for Ranbir to push the pedal from there. That itself can make Bollywood’s star system more interesting, which currently is in a status quo. Akshay is too old to break the Khan hegemony at this this point and position himself as the future. He is doing well in his own space and will probably continue to do so.
Its better for some new blood to rise to the top than the Khans continuing like this to their sixties. Aamir doing so as a combination of actor/director/producer is fine and good for the industry. He has anyways shown the way by playing his age with white-air and pot-belly in Dangal.
But its a bit tedious to see SRK doing romcoms at this age and Salman to be the action star with a tummy. I would rather like to see Ranbir doing great in the romcom space and Tiger doing TZH with same success as Khans.
It is no good to have a vacuum in the industry with aging superstars and no successors in sight.
J.P.Dutta ropes in real life Indian Army officials to play key roles in Paltan

Readers may recall that Bollywood Hungama had earlier reported about J.P. Dutta planning to bring in real life officials from the Indian Army in order to provide physical training to the lead actors of his upcoming film Paltan. Needless to say that, J.P. Dutta is leaving no stone unturned to make his film look as authentic as possible.
Speaking about the same, Siddhanth Kapoor (who plays an important role of a soldier in Paltan), revealed that the reason why J.P. Dutta had decided to rope in only a handful of junior artistes and appoint real- life soldiers to feature as officers in the film was to make the film look extremely convincing. Meanwhile, J.P. Dutta stated that the lead cast of his film have already kicked off training with the Indian Army personnels. He added that his cast needed to keep themselves totally fit as Paltan was a war film with lot of action. With the timely help from the Central Government, J.P. Dutta had got all the required permissions to shoot in the sensitive zones near the Indo- China border. The film’s shooting will get started in September in Ladakh.
But it will be a high octane action film with good production values. Can click big and be 300+ cr film. With the current scenario of constants flops (MM has opened poorly) and underwhelming promotions of TEPK/JHMS/Baadshaho, I guess the industry and trade will be betting v high on TZH.

Watched War for Planet of the Apes. I have been a big fan of this trilogy and really loved the Dawn (part 1), liked Rise (Part 2) and was really looking to watch this and got time and chance.
However the movie turned our to be different. It was not bad but it was unexpected. Something like what happened with me during Wonder woman, which was a tragic love story disguised in a superhero genre.
War is basically a social drama disguised in a war epic. It beautifully touches upon humanity as well as Animal Emotion, for a lack of word calling it Animality. There are several sequences which touches your heart.
However the movie is agonizingly slow to the point where you can actually take meal breaks and still you will not miss a scene.
Caesar the captain of the Ape clan has given a performance of a life time.It is actually an Oscar winning performance. Not sure if it will quality as he is an ape.
The film ends on what created the planet of apes and why humans never deserved to rule it in the first place.
I wouldn’t call it a miss fire but definitely not what I expected. Lack of exciting action really surprised me. Agree Caesar deserves some kind of award as the camera was glued on him throughout.

An interesting take on Ranbir (This may become an alternate reality than climbing the superstar ladder in case Dutt fails. Has happened previously with Abhishek/Hritik.):

Despite its box office failure, he got a star vehicle handed to him by one of the biggest studios in the country. He was turned into a heartthrob using clever cinematic techniques conceived and implemented by others, with his contribution being limited to conventionally good looks, a good physique, and his ability to dance.
Simply based on the fact that he was appearing in offbeat films, he was hailed as a supremely talented actor, despite providing no evidence of this, except the fact that he wasn’t as bad as his abysmal competitors. Flops never weighed him down, and merely by constantly calling him a superstar in the same league as stars 15-20 years his senior, he was turned into one. Bs article. IMHO Ranbir is a good acting talent – yes privileged and supported by media.
He’s a natural actor who is making very poor film choices. Experimental cinema is good if done in less expensive ways. I’m hardly a huge fan of his in the kinds of genres he deals with – the BAH, AA, YJHD, ADHM etc. I don’t particularly like the soppy romantic comedy or dramas.
This is pure overreaction to a dud. It’s happened before; this is when that nepotism argument is the opposite. Guys like Abhishek, Ranbir etc get judged incredibly harshly. Ranbir’s acting in these films is on a par. If he cuts out the BV, JJ or does them on lower budgets he’s fine and won’t fail.
I think compared to average acting talent in Bollywood, the likes of Ranbir/Abhishek dont fall behind, instead they are decent enough. Hritik was in more gimmicky space like Tiger with focus on body-building, dancing, stunts and other superfluous stuff, rather than acting. But the media and the trade have always been kind to these guys due to their lineage, and that too for a long time.
But at some point the failures can pile up so much, that those quarters can dry up too. Media does not focus on Abhishek anymore, Hritik’s Kabil fetches low distribution price (and still fails!), and so on. Same can happen with Ranbir too!
I’ll say Hrithik got a perfect launch for a very poor actor who can dance, look good (read plastic), a good soundtrack, drive women crazy etc. But barring a few films he’s been managing his career poorly.
Heck his co actress had Gadar follow and she’s nowhere to be seen.
He’s still in a rat race but he’s mostly out injured or absent.
Hritik cant act so his choices are limited. In that space even Tiger’s films are looking repetitive with dancing and stunts, although he has not done too many films.
I am amazed that Munna Michael has opened in 3000 screens! That is a lot of screens and as expected the movie has opened poorly (15% as per some reports). Salman’s dance based film with Remo may be risky too, as such dancing movies seem to have limited appeal.
Abhishek did the same. He went for bigger budgets like JBJ (A no brainer as YRF at the time had delivered for him), Drona was a huge expensive mistake. He got films from Ratnam, ROM, Gowariker who one would think many would crave for AT THAT TIME. All were underperformers, he was than touted as a wooden non actor which is quite ridiculous if you watch Guru, BnB, KANK or Yuva. He’s not recovered but when he produced Paa on a small budget – quite an experimental film it worked, absolutely Big B is the reason for the success but the economics were right. He will not recover in all probability as from Day 1 expectations were extraordinary and it’s impossible to be the son of the biggest star ever and launch in character roles – the Bollywood system just won’t do it and even it allows it he’d get mullered. Ranbir is better placed; Hirani is not as risky and he carries the critical & commercial expectations with aplomb than after that it’s on Ranbir to make good choices as his talent is obvious.
As you said, Abhishek lost out when his prestige line-up of Raavan (Ratnam), KHJJS (Gowariker) and D6 (ROM) failed in quick time. It did not help that more commercial ventures like JBJ, Drona, Players or Game did not work either. I guess for star kids it all boils down to the choices they make. I agree that Ranbir’s choices after Dutt will decide his fate (provided Dutt works). He has not signed any new film lately.
But then, if Dutt under-performs, the choices can dry up.
Those films followed Guru, JA and RDB right if I’m correct? If so Abhishek would be an idiot not to sign them. Rahman scored music for 2. He had Aishwarya & Deepika for 2 as co-stars so these were simply underperforming films but only the Gowariker one was an outright dud.
By the right choices I guess the script sense comes into play. Aamir rejected Swades after Lagaan, and SRK jumped into it. The role of Mohan was a good one to to play, but Aamir found the script boring. Swades could have been AKP’s second production, but Gowariker had to float his own production company after Aamir pulled out. I think many actors just go by the roles and big directors/producers instead of judging the film/script as a whole. That is where the choices can go wrong.
Agree but I think this sixth sense is obviously impossible for everyone to have otherwise every Friday we’ll be running to the theatres. And this sense has developed after some 10-15 years in the industry and hidden motivation of media rejection IMO.
Abhishek in 06-10 phase is quite young industry wise and is never really got into a career position where he could say no. Senior guys with much more secure stardom and filmographies can. He’s still a child in that sense. But yes if he had the magic ball that Aamir has he could make those calls. Frankly no one does.
And sometimes it’s simple destiny not to repeat greatness. He is a solid enough actor to do peripheral character roles with edge ala Irfan Khan or nawazuddin siddiqui, maybe nowhere near as talented.
But this would be like Messi’s son being a star in division 3 of the Argentina league. It’ll not be enough for Bollywood – they’d pit him against his father no matter what.
The best thing for Abhishek was to after Paa just be a producer actor in his own films. It was his way of proving it’s his success alone.
That is also one reason I am a bit skeptical about Dutt. It may be bit foolish to doubt Hirani but even the best minds can go wrong at times. Sanjay Dutt biopic does not sound a typical Hirani comedy/satire with a social message. I am sure playing the role of Sanjay Dutt on screen is enticing, so is working with Hirani – but hopefully that is not the reasons for Ranbir to do this. Good news is that even Aamir has said the script is good.
Just getting Sanjay’s look right or copying his mannerisms is not going to ensure good content nor a satisfying film.
Its not like Aamir has a magic ball for his script sense or that it had developed only after 10-15 years in the industry.
Firstly, I think strongly that what we often pass-off as good script sense is actually a deep-rooted interest in film-making (apart from an intuition about what stories audience will connect to). Even during his chocolate-faced heartthrob days in his twenties, he used to talk about his interest in film-making, interest in screenplay and scripting, etc. Some of these interviews are now on youtube also. He has also talked about the importance of pre-production, where he can tell how the film will eventually shape up. He strongly supervises the post-production work of his own productions. He did a commendable job as a director in TZP. So it is a culmination of all these various film-making skill-sets that he has evolved with time. In his twenties, he used to feel bad about his choice of work. By 30, he had taken a stance that he will work only in films that he liked which resulted in one-film-a-year for most of later nineties. And by 35 he had floated AKP to produce Lagaan in order to work on his own terms.
So NO, not everyone can have such interest and insight into one’s line of work nor can one evolve so much over the years! It is futile to compare him or his skills with anyone else.
Regarding Abhishek, I also feel he should have continued as a producer and acted in some of his own films like Paa. Ranbir has spent more than a decade in the industry and is in a better position to say no and choose wisely.
I think you have entered him first into the discussion. I’ve no doubt that interest in your craft can enable better decisions. And no one should be compared in kind. That’s not to say he’s so far ahead or anything – just in the context of choices and career management he is very far ahead.
Everyone is different. I could essay most these stars but it’ll be boring.
Abhishek I liked as the obvious route was to mimmick his father’s image. He didn’t really. +1.
He could have produced Don and done roles like that, he didn’t. +1.
He really messed up in hindsight with his image. At the time when he was called overweight or lazy I’d defend it but now I’d say a little care and listening in these matters i.e. stay fit like Akshay Kumar no need for big muscles or abs. He should have here IMO. -1.
Beyond that he made reasonable choices that most would (unless they have a more rooted interest in filmmaking). +1.
He should avoid multistarrrers in fact D3 he should have learnt from D2 won’t add to his career. -1.

Way back when i first visited this site, I said the fascination for Abhishek in this blog surprises me…It still surprises me as since that time he hasnt done anything to change my view point…Not that I hate him or anything but he is not a very important hero to have so much discussion on. I have no hate nor any liking towards him to even analyze his career choices..Where he does relatively well are the Sarkar kind of roles. He was very good in Yuva and thats one film where he really took me by surprise though…Otherwise he is just ok…i dont honestly think he is a great actor at all…
And IMHO Ranbir is in a different stratosphere to Abhishek when it comes to acting…
Meanwhile the only film I connected with Ranbir was Rocket Singh and to an extent the Pacino act of Rajneeti. He was nice and goofy in Barfi but was ably supported by an engaging act by Priyanka plus Pritam did extremely well and gave us memorable and somewhat ‘different’ music.( kishore kumar kind of wacky tracks).
Yes lack of competition is serving him well but he is unable to capitalize on that and in my ‘bollywood’s opinion will turn out to be a one trick pony similar to many others. There is no thespian here….cannot work in masala or massy setting….loud is out too. He would be best served to ape aamir and remain within his own comfort zone.
In general I find the dislike of Ranbir, Abhishek odd as barring Ranbir’s womanising antics they are not particularly controversial celebrities. They don’t get done for taxes, or in court cases for murder or divorces or killing wildlife or embroiled in politics around nationalism or bullying.
Basically they are fairly clean celebs. So maybe for some Salman fans elsewhere I’ve noticed a pattern whereby they go after his ex girlfriends’ boyfriends. Kind of kindergarten stuff.
This is the syndrome of anything connected to your favourite you must either favour (if it’s Farah, KJo or Aditya for SRK) or you must dislike (if it’s Vivek, Abhishek or Ranbir for Salman).
Without that level of interest in film-making and talents for it, Ranbir (or anyone else) will not be able to achieve even a small iota of what Aamir has done from Lagaan to Dangal. So let us leave that aside.
What Ranbir can perhaps do to ‘ape’ Aamir is try some ‘rough’ roles to break his chocolate hero image. Once Aamir was in thirties he had moved on to Rangeela, Ghulam, Sarfarosh etc with elan and considerable success. Ranbir is already in mid-thirties. So let him first take this baby-step, and then we can think of him going the Aamir way.

Well, Salman fans cannot make or break a star that is for sure. It was clearly visible during Tubelight fiasco and no fan showed any mercy for a substandard product and the movie was not even allowed a decent run there. As so-called Salman fan, I have watched movies of all the 3 actors listed above irrespective of the surrounding noise, but my own perceptions are substantiated by the poor outcome of their movies and eventual career overall. May be they got overhyped by the fact of dating Salman’s exes and media took more interest in them than they deserved on their own merit…..so in hindsight it has helped them to be in the limelight and be noticed…so important for career dealing with cameras and movies.
On Ranbir, his womanizing should be least bothersome for any true lover of cinema. Leo Dicaprio is a prime example where talent and class act drowns and deflects all the womanizing and debauchery he is associated with and you just fall in love with the character he plays on screen. Among the people listed Abhi seems to be a genuinely nice guy and it shows in his relations with one and all. Vivek is a typical big mouthed Mayo’ite Rajput boarding school product. I have no clue on Ranbir though he comes across the slimy kind who I feel should be man enough to use his six or twelve inches to entice dames instead of baiting them with marriage/living in inducement.
But as I said earlier it’s the movie and eventual talent which speaks louder than anything else in market place and public arena.

Have to admire your love for Salman in how everyone bar him has a fault but if Salman has one all kinds of reasons and forgiveness is given. I mean Ranbir is probably a slimy Bollywood actor like many others. But Salman beating women?
What would Salman have to do for you not to fight his corner?

I’ll say Dunkirk is more engaging and it’s a short film so never gets tiring.
When I say loud, I don’t mean the guns, bombs, etc. being loud or loud music playing in the back ground, I mean a constant loud bass playing in the back ground. Not sure what was the need for it. I’m sure Nolan and others part of this film watched it on IMAX prior to release to see how it looks/sounds, surprised they didn’t take any action on it.
I mean you’ll be lucky if you’re able to hear 3% of the dialogues thru out the whole movie.
Some of the visuals are good, specially how it looks on IMAX but nothing we haven’t seen before.
I surely think critics are going gaga over nothing. This is in no way Oscar material.

Remember Lena hai, lena hai? A hit song of the 90s from a film titled Bomb Blast. That was the last time we saw Ronit Roy dancing. Here’s the video to remind you of how it looked.
He shakes a leg again in Munna Michael after almost three decades, and that makes for a promising opening. His character believes Michael (Jackson, of course) lives forever, but getting thrown out of his dancing troupe, wavers his faith in dancing as a profession. So, he takes to drinking. This is what disillusioned artists do in Bollywood. But that’s not all. He then finds an orphan in a dustbin and brings him home. Because this is also what Bollywood does.
Like typical Bollywood kids, this one too grows up to become Munna (Tiger Shroff), a super dancer, in one song. His antics and need for money takes him to Delhi where he begins teaching dance steps to Mahinder Fauji (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a land shark and a closet dancer. Their fine-tuned bromance goes for a toss the moment Dolly (Nidhhi Agerwal) enters the frame. Oh, we never saw that coming!
Just joking.
Now, it’s finally a film where everybody would look disinterested and jump at a chance to break into a song. Why? Because this is what Bollywood does.
Some assistant must have reminded Sabbir Khan that it is 2017 and the film is looking like the glossier version of the ‘80s movies. So, he brings in the idea of dance face-off and a reality show. How would you fit in Tiger Shroff otherwise? How innovative!
Taking a cue from MJ’s signature moonwalking to picking a dialogue from Wong Kar-wai’s Chunking Express, Sabbir Khan keeps trying to infuse Munna with traits that can strike a balance between Delhi and Mumbai. It’s simple math. Base the film in two biggest territories because that is what Bollywood does.
He isn’t done yet, but Tiger Shroff can’t bear the pressure anymore, so Sabbir Khan shifts his focus to Nawazuddin, one of the finest of our times, and makes him do one of the most bizarre roles of his lifetime.
Hamming his way to Hotel Bluestar, a property he owns in Delhi, Siddiqui probably knows how it is going to look in the end. Still he tries to not seem completely clueless. His efforts go in vein though. It’s sad to see him sleepwalking in Munna Michael after a top-class performance in Mom.
Khan’s vision of making Nawazudin Siddiqui acrobats doesn’t help either. You can easily figure out the body doubles. Even if you don’t, background dancers make sure you do. Their close ups are so over the top that you would wander whether they all decided together to look in a certain way?
Talking of close ups, the award for most exciting close up goes to Farah Khan who judges a reality show in Munna Michael. Her enthusiasm knows no boundary and every time Tiger Shroff does a summersault, you wait for Farah’s ‘oh my god’ reaction.
All this is happening because Dolly wants to make her father proud by becoming an accomplished dancer. By the way, we never meet her father. She announces her arrival with these lines:
Hil jaande sab mere naal, jab main shake karaan
From UK to Nainital, sab shake karaan.
It may sound like a conspiracy theory, but her striking similarity with Kriti Sanon might have prompted Sabbir Khan to cast her. Sanon was the heroine of Khan’s earlier film Heropanti.
Her debut isn’t impressive, but you can’t signal her out. Everyone, with special mention of Pankaj Tripathi, is equally out of touch in Munna Michael.
MJ should live forever, MJ will live forever, but this isn’t the right tribute to the moonwalking King Of Pop. This forgettable 138-minute film can be better described as this one-liner somebody whispered in the dark right before the end credits: Ye sab alag hi zone me hain (They’re in a different zone).

Munna Michael Day 1 Box Office Collection Update: Tiger Shroff’s dance-action film has hit the screens today. It is the first film for masses since Bahubali 2 so the expectations are pretty high.
The last couple of months has turned out to be very poor for Bollywood. There have been too many failures and only a couple of films were able to succeed. Thus the trade was hoping that Munna Michael will provide some relief. However, the film has got a poor opening.
As per the official announcement, the film is released in 3000 screens. The overall occupancy in the morning shows was in the range of 15-20% in all over India which is a poor start. The opening is better in Mumbai circuit thanks to the genre. It has got a disastrous start in Delhi and East Punjab. The film is also poor in major multiplexes.
Munna Michael is again one of those films where the makers had failed to capitalize the potential of star and film. Tiger Shroff’s fan following is in North India and masses and he has mostly done action films. But here Munna Michael is more of a dance film and such movies have an audience in Mumbai circuit only.
For masala films, a good opening is a must for surviving at the box office. As they don’t have the evening audience like the content oriented films. But here MM has become more of a word of mouth film and will need big turnaround over the weekend. It looks pretty tough considering the early response.
Other Hollywood film Dunkirk has got a good opening as the occupancy in the morning shows is 25%. As expected, it has opened better in urban multiplexes and will grow further in the evening. Unlike other Hollywood films, it has not been dubbed in Hindi or any other language which is understandable as it is mainly for the high-class audience. The film has high chances to emerge a success.

Munna Michael 1st Day Box Office Collection Early Trends:
According to the early trade trends, Munna Michael 1st day collection will be around 6 crores which is in the same range as Tiger’s last release A Flying Jatt. The film will also collect lower than Jagga Jasoos which was only released in 1800 screens.
I finally got around to watching Kangana’s ‘QUEEN.’ I had been deliberately avoiding this movie, though it was staring at me through NETFLIX for a long, long time and, in lieu of it, watching insignificant, not spirit-lifting but table-uprooting films like ‘MASTI”: Plus, have been trying to sort through some issues and hence, was just not interested in talking about anything, especially the ‘lynching’ and the glorification of ‘side-heroes’ like Tanaji Malusare.
‘QUEEN’ is surely a good movie by any standards but I was stuck wondering what is it that the public and critics went orgasmic over – apart from Kangana’s performance and Rao’s willingness to submit to chauvinism. As a person recovering from the trauma of a fiancée backing out at the last moment, it is quite understandable the instinctive decision of the girl to just ‘get out’ from the immediate surroundings: The ‘self-discovery’ is what I had a problem with. Does it even ring quite true? And through what lens? The initiation point for Kangana’s character of Rani toward ‘liberalization’ and ‘self-awareness’ is through Lisa Haydon’s ‘Vijay Lakshmi.’ [The makers were trying to impress the audience through this contrast, of having a traditional South-Indian name doing unSouth-Indian things like blasting f-bombs or discussing the size of a man’s brain, but sorry, not wooed-in at all. Of course, she has to have a kid born out of wed-lock, and she has to go every night to the clubs with an army of condoms, get-drunk and act drunk in front of cops or cab-drivers or the Eiffel tower. Who cares for the kid at that time? That’s not going to be shown fellas!! It’s outside of the scope of ‘additional’ dialogues and scenes devised by Kangana.] And obviously, where else does one do all that? In a country and city far, far-away from India!]. And then, she ‘discovers’ life and tangential meanings and experiences to it through her hostel-mates, who are, as critically depicted in the movie, ‘passing’ influences. There’s then the sham of a climax, where it’s conveyed that the ‘claustrophobic’ expectations and nature of marriage are kicked out the door when Rani returns the ring and walks away from the fiancée.
As I mentioned before, it’s her self-discovery as portrayed in the film that stood out like a weird-thumb for me: It’s the idea that fleeting experiences and learning-moments can endure a life-time that’s disturbing. Yes, she comes from a traditional mind-set entrenched in Rajouri or Old Rajinder Nagar but gains ‘exposure’ and wisdom in Paris. Pray, then, how’s this different from all of Ranbir Kapoor’s discovering self at 33+? And when I say that, I am only talking of the depictions in ‘alternative’ films heralded by the likes of Kashyap and company. In earlier times, one discovered himself or herself in the bittery cold of the Himalayas; today, Ranbir’s or Lisa’s characters discover themselves after having uninhibited sex in BOI’s favorite haunt, Europe or the US. She walked out of a marriage that was bound to be ‘role-driven’; fair-enough. What happens when you turn 50? [And if you are working in IT, what happens at 35 when you have to swallow BP an Diabetes medication to convince your bosses that you are doing well at your job?] Do the ‘suffocating’ institutions of marriage and/or any sort of traditional relationships still trouble one when one has to get-up with a hand on the knee to get to the medicine cabinet? Is that ever-explored in such kinds of cinema? It’s quite lucrative to bring in young bums on the seat when the arc of life is still evolving; but what happens after? And this’s the reason I have always questioned this ‘new-age’ film-makers who are actually no different from the much-maligned film-makers of the ‘70s and the ‘80s who supposedly focused only on the ‘broader’ narrative that didn’t quite boil down to ‘specifics.’
The film’s end credits show Rani talking about her Face-book time-line where it ONLY shows the course of her life in 2014. [Talking of self-discovery, Rani after all her Parisian and Amsterdam exploits, still has yet to realize the fakery of social-networking where everyone’s life ‘rocks.’ She still believes Face-book to be the ultimate conveyor of her ‘self-discovery.’ And she is still happy that her posts get ‘LIKES.’]
Saw Dunkirk on 70 MM. I didn’t have the IMAX 70 MM option at my end. Had to choose between IMAX and 70 MM and felt the latter was the better choice. It’s a very impressive film at many levels but I had mixed feelings about it. I’ll get into some of the reasons in another note. Can’t do so at the moment. I do accept that on an authentic IMAX screen and with 70 MM it probably is a very extraordinary experience. Nonetheless some of my issues would remain.
I haven’t seen it yet but it feels like quite a departure from the Nolan film. Everything else till now allowed so much room for his stamp or creativity but Dunkirk must have a lot of factual emphasis. Also I don’t particularly remember studying this hugely in history lessons so I’m not sure how popularized this part of WW2 is comparable to other significant moments like the breakout or build up itself (which was so intriguing to me at least how Hitler came to power post a suppressed Germany, the hyperinflation in mid 20’s, his whole history, propaganda etc), pearl harbour, the battles on the Russian front, the battle of Britain itself, the key US battles, the atomic bombs, concentration camps etc. I found the trailer less than enthralling; no doubt Nolan will nail it but just not that interesting part of the war for me.
For a change, Nolan took this subject. It is a straightforward incident. I remember that a whole para was devoted to this incident in my history book! Somehow that name registered and I feel that justice will be done to the heroes through this film.
No doubt on it and I’m not dismissing any kind of devotion to presenting events like these as heroes exist. It’s possible British schools focused much more attention on the build up to war or maybe that is what I remembered mostly.
I liked Dunkirk a lot. Im glad Nolan didnt bow to people’s expectations of ehat a war film should be like. Instead he comes up with a uniquely shot and narrated film which is more of a survival genre than a war film. Maybe it was never meant to be a fact based story.
Definitely an ace effort with an excellent background score and some amazingly shot scenes which only a master likeNolan could pull off

Lipstick Under My Burkha after garnering some superb reviews and decent day 1 opening has shown some amazing growth on day 2 at the box office.
Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Rachna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumara and Plabita Borthakur has collected 2.17 Crores on its day 2 at the box office. The day one of the film was 1.22 Crores and it has been released on mere 400 screens.
The two day total of the film now stands at 3.39 Crores. The word of mouth is super positive and hence the film has shown over 75% of growth on its second day. Sunday should also see a considerable growth in the collections.

Munna Micheal had a drop on the second day as it grossed 6 crore nett. This is on the expected lines as a film which is such a wide release and not really collecting in big city multiplexes is always likley to drop on day two. The film has business of 12.50 crore nett plus in two days but this is how much the film had to get on day one to get to that 70 crore nett plus mark. Here this was never on, even 10 crore nett was impossible on day one due to the promos not appealing to A centres outside Maharashtra. The film should manage some growth on Sunday but its unlikely to be much. The hope for the film is a good hold on Monday and steady weekdays which could take it to a respectable total but thats about it. The first day made sure that a successful film was never on the cards. The first two day collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

I think it’s too easy an excuse to say pressure. They were under 6 an over. No huge drama was required to go big hitting. Some simple easy cricket was all required.
One can understand a huge chase but this was inexplicable and poor judgement.
Well, India Women’s batting is top heavy. Sushma Verma, Jhulan Goswami onwards the tail starts. They need a better keeper Batswomen. Gone are the days when Ajay Ratra was sure shot selection. Sushma Verma has an average of 6.4. Which is poor.
Lol, crazy execution. But last time the men played in England, they lost to arc rivals Pak by a matter of 200 runs, 9 runs is respectable in that regard
It was a terrible show once wickets started tumbling. But they had remained competitve in the game fir a long time. And The team can take pride in reaching the finals. This WW has been a good advertising platform for women’s cricket in India. Its v good overall.
And life is not SRK’s CDI. Reality is much more harsh amd brutal than fairytales on screen. Its best to take the positives out of the match and to move on.
Hope it holds as well as other Nolan films and does his average 3.6X weekend multiplier. Otherwise it will be difficult to justify its 150 M$ production cost economically.
Strangely without much promotion.. Devdas was released all over US cinemas just for 1 day to celebrate 15h Anniversary. Too many cinemas and shows.. don’t know if there was any audience.

Munna Micheal has done well on Sunday as it has collected well in most parts outside the five big metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore. The film is looking at growth of around 35% on Sunday which will take its collections to around 8 crore nett and the weekend to 20.50 crore nett. This is not a good figure but the film looked a bit of a write off over the first two days but Sunday gives it a fighting chance. There has not been any film which has grown 35% on Sunday this year until Munna Micheal. It is this trend which gives some hope for Monday at least.
Last week Jagga Jasoos grew very well on Saturday as that was the day when its target audience in the metros comes out in numbers but eventually it just flattered to deceive. This could be the case here as well because Sunday is the day when the audience for Munna Micheal which is outside the metros comes out in numbers. It could be a dead cats bounce but only Monday will tell that. The film will have to do around 4 crore nett Monday which would be a decent figure and a solid trend. This looked impossible after the first two days but now there is some hope which the industry will take considering how films are falling like ninepins.

I really doubt if JJ can be called a liked movie. Its appreciation is v limited even in the metros. Its doing around 7 at imdb, but the number of votes are also low. The sustenance is at v low level in the second weekend and it wont be able to double its weekend collection in the end. So its not just the high costs. As for MM, even after the Sunday growth, the collections are in the same range as JJ’s opening day.
I tend to agree with the general narrative in the trade sites that Bollywood has lost its way with lack of content. The BO is simply too dismal at this point. Neither JHMS or TEPK look that exciting to turn things around in a major way. If they can, more power to them. But the promotional material of both the films are quite average. Last time a trailer really worked well was BB2, and the movie also turned out to be a satisfying cinematic experience. Audience seems to be demanding more now after BB2 success. Only film that I am looking forward to this year is Secret Superstar, primarily due to my faith in Aamir and his films. It also seems a good thematic followup to Dangal in terms of women empowerment. But a lot will depend on the interest it generates during promotions (the teaser was strictly average). Apart from that some of next year’s films seem interesting like 2.0, Dutt and TOH.
Rishi Kapoor lashed out at director Anurag Basu after the lukewarm response to son Ranbir Kapoor’s new film, Jagga Jasoos. Calling him irresponsible, the actor said that the Basu fails to complete films on time. In an interview with Mid-Day, Rishi Kapoor also slammed music composer Pritam.
“Till Wednesday, Anurag Basu was still mixing the film. Can you imagine that? Pritam (composer) probably delivered the music only a week before. What can you say? You don’t take an opinion from anybody. Today’s filmmakers are doing this with everybody. They don’t show their films before release to take opinions, and treat it as though they’re making a nuclear bomb. I didn’t hate or love the film. I only felt it needed to be abridged by 20 minutes. But who is going to give that opinion to them? I totally agree with Ekta (Kapoor) when she threw him out from her film. He had problems with Rakesh Roshan while working on Kites (2010). He’s such an irresponsible director that he doesn’t complete the film. It was supposed to release three times in the past two years, but it kept getting delayed.
Asked about why the film wasn’t released in some international markets on time, Rishi Kapoor again blamed Basu’s delays. “It did not release in Singapore because you have to deliver it five days in advance. It did not release in the Gulf on Thursday because it was only delivered to them on Thursday. This is unreasonable and irresponsible. You may be thinking you are making the Taj Mahal, but you are supposed to make it ready on time. Even Pritam delays his submissions. [It was later promoted as] a kids’ film. But, a kids’ film also has to release at the right time, like during the school vacations. At that time too, Anurag Basu wasn’t ready. There’s economics and maths involved. Everything is not just about creativity.”
“You may be the biggest director in the world,” he said, “but nobody would like to work with you because you are irresponsible. There is somebody else’s money involved in this. I trusted you, and this is what you give us? Ranbir hasn’t held back on spending money on it. You even threw Govinda out of the film. If you don’t want Govinda to work in your film, why did you ask him in the first place?”
Everything is right only if the producer himself said it. Sounds like a father battling his son’s battles. As co-producer Ranbir should have put his foot down. He’ll learn.

He mentioned he is helpless with a director like Anurag Basu who doesn’t work with a script. He regretted working as producer on this movie and wanted to shelve it multiple times but let it go and then completed.

Talking about director Anurag Basu’s style of working he said, “It’s disorganised chaos. There is no AD system, there’s no script, there’s no schedule. He’ll cancel a 40-day schedule on the third day because he feels it’s not working. When Barfi started, the character I was playing was supposed to be very intense and serious. After 10 days, he suddenly comes to me and says, ‘Maza nahin aaraha yaar. Yeh bahut matlab serious film ho rahin hain. Let’s try and make it more fun’. That’s when the Chaplin and all started coming in. Barfi was successful. So, we forgive that process. So, if Jagga Jasoos does not work, I don’t think this process can be forgiven because it’s irresponsible. You know other people’s time, money (is involved), the other producers waiting for you.”
Ranbir also says that he regrets producing, calling it a “Big mistake. First and last time. And (Anurag is the) wrong person to produce a film with, because you have no control. And it just makes you feel useless because he is running everything. I can’t take credit for this film. I am very happy I produced this film. I don’t know much about me acting in the film. I don’t know if I am good or not but I am happy to have produced a film like this in India.”
“Ranbir Kapoor, for his part, ought to consider keeping a lower profile too. It was poor form to publicly disparage his director, particularly since the star also served as producer on the film and presumably had the authority to correct the problems he complained about as they arose.”
Also think Rishi Kapoor points out the Kites history so what did Ranbir do to reduce his risk here? If you know you’re doing business with the devil be prepared! Or let him pay for delays.
I can think of TZP. Amol Gupte took a few director shots but Aamir was not happy. He sent him packing. He was the producer. I’m not saying it’s ethical but if the overall project is better it is the right decision for anyone connected to the film. Problem here is deeper, Basu is producer as well and Ranbir actor – UTV/Disney should have really played a role of mediator here. And emphasised a concrete release date.
I bet if film did well the Kapoors would have stayed quiet and them not mentioning Ranbir Katrina break up as no factor? It’s bound to have been an issue. Not defending Basu – he’s self indulgent director probably but it seems like Kapoor and son waited till box office fate was sealed before they launched their attacks.
Well, Basu should tell his side of the story if he is not guilty.
If the film had become a success, Basu would have gone scotfree and gullible actors and producers would have suffered!
I’m sure he is guilty! But doesn’t mean the other producers didn’t have opportunities to say anything! They are only talking after the film – before the film I heard Ranbir on a UK radio and he wasn’t speaking about issues with Basu he was selling his film, why he liked it and why people should watch it. Him and Katrina were happy to try and sell the dud. He’s happy to pay distributors etc. No point showing your balls now, should have 3 years ago.
This blame game serves no one. They all have been part of it and should share the responsibility of the failure. No point in ranting against each other. As Basu, Ranbir and Disney are all co-producers, all of them will suffer losses on JJ.
Anurag Basu should move on to directing small films again. Ranbir needs to select films with more care. Disney had already decided to close shop after Mohenjodaro.
Yes agreed. Anyway it’s not even a huge disaster or a complete dud. If someone watches the film with a view to take the gene idea and improve it in future it’s a genre that can really work.
Santoshi to direct it may have been better. With the madness of AAA and APKGK he may have been more experienced and professional to deliver here.

Shah Rukh Khan believes that love stories are made by directors who are sensitive and understand women’s perspective about romance. Giving examples of Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar, the Badshah of Bollywood told PTI, “They’ve seen it from the perspective of what a woman wants and they embody that in the characters I play. A film about a man trying to commit suicide would have been interesting and really experimental role for SRK. But all he wanted from Imtiaz is a happy happy romcom. I guess it will be up to Ranbir now to do the suicidal stuff!
this is the frustrating thing about post-95 SRK…always willing to go near the line…but never going past it and thus playing it safe without any risks taken.
These recent movies of his were supposed to be exciting and add some versatility to his repertoire but that hasn’t happened and going by the looks of JHMS…we will keep waiting…
I guess its the insecurity of losing your superstardom that prevents him from crossing the line. It will likely remain this way till he is a top star. To his credit he still commands a considerable pull at BO (as we saw with Raees opening), even after 20 years since 95. Considering the dismal state of BO these days, a 20 cr opening for JHMS is going to be cheered by the trade, distributors and exhibitors. Its only when he eventually loses his appeal as a commercial superstar (still some time away I believe) that we may see him really experimenting. Till then, he will hang around with his frequent small hits/semi-hits, which maybe interspersed with a big hit like CE at times.
Srk is taking risk by playing dwarf. And JHMS is also risky with Imtiaz Ali and Anushka as a co star. Anushka has become too common acting in every second movie. She looks so generic. And it is a lovestory.
Actor Riteish Deshmukh has apologised for a skit performed at the IIFA Awards after Pahlaj Nihalani, chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, sent the organisers a legal notice accusing them of defamation. Riteish, one of the two actors who performed the skit, told NDTV.com, “The segment was about our film industry being a big family and who plays what role in it. Yes, there was a comment on Pahlajji. The entire act was done in good humour but if it has upset him or anyone else, I would like to tender unconditional apology.” The skit, co-performed by Manish Paul, displayed a picture of Mr Nihalani and referred to him as a ‘watchman.’
Pahlaj Nihalani sent Wizcraft International, who organise the IIFA extravaganza, a five-page legal notice objecting to the use of his picture and the ‘denigrating title of watchman,’ describing the skit as a ‘sordid attempt to increase TRPs.’ He demands a public apology, a retractment of the footage broadcast on Colors and declaration IIFA will not defame him in future. Mr Nihalani also invoked a skit performed at the IIFA Awards by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar last year, in which ‘similar defamatory expressions’ were used, the legal notice alleged.
Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan who were last seen together on the big screen in ‘Piku’ are collaborating once again for Vishal Bhardwaj’s production which will be directed by Honey Trehan. The story of the film is said to be based on journalist S Hussain Zaidi’s novel titled ‘Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’. Deepika will be seen essaying the role of gangster Rahima Khan and the film is reportedly said to release on October 2, 2018. The tale of Rahima Khan, popularly known as Sapna Didi revolves around how she plots to kill underworld don Dawood Ibrahim who is responsible for her husband’s death. Rahima shows the courage and valour to face the danger only to succumb at the hands on the underworld don when he gets to know her plans.
Indian eve’s defeat in 2017 World Cup final could serve as blessing in disguise for women’s cricket
In a country where cricket is followed almost like a religion and men in blue are household icons, there is little awareness about women’s cricket. The Indian eve’s grand entry in the world cup finale at Lord’s was a wow moment for millions who turned fans of the team’s grit and determination. But the eventual collapse of the team almost when it was about to create history left the fans disappointed.
But more than the defeat it was the display of sheer courage of the team that won the hearts of millions of fans across the country. Hopefully, the defeat shall prove a necessary trigger for the administrators to invest even more time and money into women’s cricket, as they do to men’s cricket, to hone the players’ skills and prepare them for a sure-shot victory on the world stage.
Mithali and her girls have resurrected the interest level in women’s cricket, partly thanks to the media and broadcast. A sincere hope that this continues.
I really enjoyed watching the Final, even though they collapsed in the final stages. Without proper infrastructure, support and everything; they did manage to leave their mark at the world stage.

Munna Micheal has had a poor weekend of around 21 crore nett. The film grossed 8-8.25 crore nett on Sunday which was much higher than the Saturday figure of 6 crore nett apprx. If this Sunday growth can follow through on Monday then the film may be able to have some sort of run. The film has done better business in single screens but the big issue is that multiplexes in A, B and C centres did not perform which are a must for any commercial film.
The footfalls for the film are more than other films taking in 21 crore nett as a large chunk of the business has come from places with lower tickets. It has more footfalls than Sachin – A Billion Dreams which grossed 24.25 crore nett in the first weekend. The first weekend collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

Lipstick Under My Burkha has decent weekend business in terms of its cost. Although the footfalls are hardly there and not many people have seen the film is in a good position commercially. the film has an investment of 6 crore and a 2.50 crore share has come in the first weekend. the film has chances to cover its 6 crore investment from the theatres in India alone though it will depend on how weekdays hold up. So, here was a 24-year-old with no acting credentials who had already been launched as a lead in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, now a lead in a Yash Raj Films production. Ranbir Kapoor had already gotten what 99.9% of aspiring actors in tinsel town never do.
The opening credits sequence began, and it was the perfect trailer for the two-and-a-half hours to follow. This was a Ranbir Kapoor fest. A star vehicle, in other industries, is generally either a way to cash in on an established star’s popularity by specifically showcasing their talents, or a vanity project generally produced by the stars themselves (implying that they’ve earned the resources needed to do so). In Bollywood, it was being given to a 24-year-old, one-film-old actor.
Simply based on the fact that he was appearing in offbeat films, he was hailed as a supremely talented actor, despite providing no evidence of this, except the fact that he wasn’t as bad as his abysmal competitors. Flops never weighed him down, and merely by constantly calling him a superstar in the same league as stars 15-20 years his senior, he was turned into one. Only after being in the industry for half a decade did he begin to give the odd glimpse of some acting ability. Be it layperson or experienced critic, no one seems to be able to see through the glossy veneer of his stardom and realise that based on talent alone, he would be lucky to get speaking roles in more meritocratic film industries. Within a decade of being in the industry, he’s earned enough to produce his own films, and even offer to compensate distributors out of his own pocket should his latest release fail.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of Bollywood propaganda.

Munna Micheal saw a big drop on Monday of over 50% as the film grossed 3-3.25 crore nett range. The film had some hope after Sunday but like Jagga Jasoos the week earlier it just managed to collect well on the day that its target audience comes out in numbers. For Jagga Jasoos it was the Saturday and for Munna Micheal it was the Sunday.
The film is heading for a first week collection of 31-32 crore nett and with a huge flow of releases over the next few weeks it is impossible to do much business of the film after seven days. The first weekend collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

Wonderful – why not ban guns, knives, rape, abuse, killing scenes etc.? Alcohol and cigarettes are less worrisome than many things if one took a stance like this.
The first part is one of my most favorite tamil masala movies in the last few years. Absolutely love the songs of the first part. Not sure how this will do in Hindi as they are directly releasing the second part. Also not sure why dhanush is using his own voice for himself.

Tubelight will not reach 115 crore nett business as collections have faded so badly since the first week. The film stands at 114.56 crore nett and will add just 1-2 lakhs more. It has just about edged past Badrinath Ki Dulhania to be third highest grosser of 2017 after Bahubali – The Conclusion and Raees.
In 2014 another Salman Khan under performer Jai Ho managed to get 1.44 crore footfalls but here the figure is looking to be just 1.15 crore so in real terms is far below Jai Ho. The footfalls of Tubelight are actually less than Badrinath Ki Dulhania also. The weekly collections of Tubelight till date are as follows.

Week Two – 11,36,00,00,000
Week Three – 58,50,000
Week Four – 5,00,000
TOTAL – 1,14,56,50,000
The industry was doing pretty well until Tubelight and is on a horrible run since Tubelight and is in desperate need of a HIT. All film released post Tubelight have also flopped barring a Lipstick Under A Burkha but that hardly has footfalls to be jubilant. The problem with these films is not just flopping but the openings are a bit of a disaster as well.
Well better to be economically sound like Lipstick Under A Burkha than have huge losses. Big openings don’t guarantee success. Just like cricket a big opening partnership just gives a platform – you still need to bat well the rest of innings.
Nolan said he won’t direct just another Bond movie and will be interested if they wanted a reboot and that collaboration would be fruitful. It is one of Nolan’s dream to direct Bond but the timing needs to be perfect as he mentioned.
Not sure if Bond franchise is ready for another reboot so soon. With Craig coming in, Casino Royale was a kind of reboot of the franchise and Bond 25 is likely to be last film of Craig as Bond (he is already tired of playing Bond by his own words). But if a new actor is likely to come in this, it may also be a good time to bring in Nolan to try out some new stuff. Sam Mendes did well with Skyfall, but was quite generic with Spectre.

But then Red Chillies also are right as they didn’t air that promo on TV. Nihalani was just pissed that TV channels picked that trailer from online and started playing on TV without anyone’s permission.
Nihalani is easy punching bag for Internet but not everything he says is wrong.. I’ve been following his interviews for years and he is not great but he’s not a joke either. He is a doing a job bound by archaic censor rules.

Celebrity column: Where is 70mm? Writes Sajid Khan
Since 70mm isn’t around today, IMAX is the new 70mm (at 65mm as that is the maximum there), my humble request to the IMAX cinema owners… GET REAL BIG SCREENS!!!
Remember when movie posters had the word 70mm written as big as the title of the film? The whole idea was to get you away from the small screen of the TV in your living room, and experience a spectacle on silver screen as huge as a medium-sized building. Hence, the term larger-than-life is something that one doesn’t associate with TV, internet and, honestly, multiplexes too. But it’s true, bigger the screen, the further the distance of the projector. And when you have five to 10 cinemas cramped on one or two floors of a shopping mall, how can you have a larger than life screen? So, to compensate, they have a fake big screen called IMAX.
The truth is, only a handful of single-screen cinemas have 70mm screens, but, and this is the main but, movies HAVE to be shot on 70mm or blown up from the conventional 35mm widescreen, AND you need a 70mm projector (which is rare). The Chinese Mann Theatre in LA, Empire in London, Maratha Mandir and New Excelsior in Mumbai, Maheswari in Hyderabad, are all true 70mm cinemas. With THE biggest screens ever (bigger than 90 per cent of IMAX screens). All movies (non 70mm) are blown up to fill those screens and the result is truly larger-than-life.Whereas IMAX screens are bigger than the ones in multiplexes, but they can’t match the size of the 70mm screens.
Recently, I saw Spiderman: Homecoming in an IMAX cinema, and quite honestly, I had to move down to the third row from the screen to get a big-screen experience! Whereas, when I saw Baahubali in New Excelsior from a back-row seat, my neck was aching from enjoying the huge screen! IMAX isn’t cinema, it’s a gimmick… like 4D, where you exit looking like you’ve exited Churchgate station ka train at rush hour. Can you go for a big rock show on the third floor of a shopping mall? Or will you enjoy it more in an open ground?
True, IMAX can rival 70mm, but for that the screen and cinema, the size has to be that of an entire building. Just like these few heritage 70mm single screens. Comfort and luxury are very important to watch movies, but not at the cost of a true viewing experience. Today 65 and 75-inch TV sets aren’t very expensive, but you can’t call them a big-screen experience… unless you are a midget!

Doubt if Mubarakan will get a 8-9 cr opening, more likely to be 6-7 cr range. It has a weak release date too, and will need strong WOM if it is to sustain in 2nd week with JHMS coming in.
Karan Johar’s upcoming co-production Raazi is being directed by Meghna Gulzar and stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. It is the story about a Kashmiri girl played by Alia, who marries a Pakistani officer played by Vicky, to spy for the Indian Intelligence.
Meghna, who has earlier made films like Filhaal and Talvar, is the daughter of celebrated writer Gulzar and veteran actress Raakhee.
For Raazi, which narrates the story of a Kashmiri girl married to a Pakistani Army officer, she has cast actors Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.
The espionage thriller is based on Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat and will be shot in Punjab, Kashmir and Mumbai.

Hindi Medium is till running at a few theatres in Mumbai and NCR despite being in its tenth week. It is likley to add 1-2 lakhs nett more business. The film is one of the rare HITS of the year and only content hit of the year although Burkha Under The Lipstick may join it. Hindi Medium did benefit from many tax exemptions around the country with the biggest one in Maharashtra which came on release. The GROSS business of the film is around 77.50 crore while the share is around 26.50 crore. The worldwide figure is around 91.75 crore. The business of Hindi Medium till date is as follows.
With Jagga Jasoos going down, the smaller battle is between Varun (Judwa 2) and Ranveer (Padmavati) in the second half of this year. One is a sequel, other is high budget Bhansali film after BM – both expected to do well.
Agreed, it will be like cashing in on the cult status of AAA. Instead, if Santoshi really has a good story he should make an independent film with the younger lot.
this would be impossibly hard to pull off at the box office. For multiple reasons. Irrespective of the lead star. It’s the kind of subject that in any case needs a limited release kind of deal. But Bollywood doesn’t do this.
most importantly he was iconic for a much older generation of viewers. That generation doesn’t exist anymore. Nor is this the age where you can pull off this sort of thing. Selling him as ‘the guy who wrote the kabhi kabhie song’ isn’t good enough. What Bhansali has in mind probably is a grand period setting in Bombay. The film industry and so on. It’s a love story more or less. Bhansali is probably doing his own version of Pyaasa here. But it’s nonetheless extremely hard to pull off.
Abhishek is a very poor choice.He had 2 ladies in life including Amrita pritam.Needed someone with a little sense of poetry.Lyrics of Pyaasa still give me goosebumps.Also Chitralekha songs.
There’s an interesting period of his life in the 40s. I don’t know if any of this will be represented. He was a communist and said controversial things in this period. Lived in Lahore through Partition, then moved to Delhi later. In any case knowing Bhansali the film is unlikely to get into his politics. Of course lotsa luck with that anyway in this India!
While we are on the subject of Sahir Ludhianvi, check out the lyrics for this song from Didi. As “national integration” moments (always a bit trite) go, this one sets the bar high.
Yes, it’s highly unlikely that Bhansali is interested in Sahir as far as ideology or anything is concerned, he wants the Sahir-Amrita Pritam love story (and absent some kind of costumed/period splendor, love just isn’t REAL for SLB :-)), i.e. he wants a pose, and nothing more. Now, Abhishek is indeed a good actor, the right actor, to add dimension and depth to the sort of paper-thin characterization that serves as SLB’s hallmark, but that doesn’t mean the film is salvageable. I don’t think he should do the film, and I imagine it’s going to be terrible.
SLB, after pillaging Mughal-e-Azam for Bajirao Mastani, now seems to want to own Guru Dutt-terrain too.
This has disaster written all over it. I’m not sure if Abhishek can correct his career in the slightest and a potentially risky high budget venture (purely based on Bhansali’s sensibility) won’t help at all. He’s asking for trouble.
The safest but most not interesting project would be Dostana 2. He should do something where box office won’t be a big concern like that. Bhansali is not a go to director / producer for resurrection. He took Salman, SRK and Hrithik in good career positions. Ramleela had Deepika on a great run. Unfortunately I doubt Abhishek is in a great position to decline. He’ll probably have to say yes.
They have had their share of issues in finding a star cast. Abhishek may be a good choice, but I am not sure if Priyanka Chopra will actually sign this given the niche subject. This is not going to be BO friendly anyways, with or without stars. Should be made in a controlled budget and given v limited multiplex release, which becomes more difficult with stars in it.
Surprised that Irfan Khan is not doing this, it is right up in his alley.
Main part of his discussion missing is that Bhansali is NOT directing this movie and just producing and it is being directed by new director Jasmeet Reen who has written the script as well. So, its not going to be an event film or something.
Irrfan would have been better choice but looks like he hasn’t been approached recently. But Abhishek is also fine if its planned as a small budgeted movie with expected lifetime gross is 25 crores.
Irrfan had reportedly put this down at some point in the past. I guess it was scheduling issue, otherwise dont see any reason for him not being interested.
There were talks about Priyanka co-producing it with Bhansali, but seems like that too has not worked out.
I think Irrfan and Priyanka would have made an interesting cast here. But good project for Abhishek to pickup.
It’s highly unlikely that Bhansali would leave a film of this kind just to a debutante director. The subject itself is something only Bhansali would be interested in. He’ll be calling the shots in more ways than one here. On the rest if you’ve been following the media reports on this film over time they’ve been calling it a Bhansali venture and have been giving it that kind of coverage. Smaller film or not it’s unlikely one could sneak this one by. It will get enough attention.
As I said, Bhansali never went back to Irrfan and there is no date issues and just approached Abhishek. Below is Irrfan’s statement.
Talking about the rumours and his involvement, Irrfan said in a statement: “I’m not sure where these rumours are coming from. I was approached for the film almost two years back, but since then there’s been no conversation on dates, so how does the question of me not having time or walking out of the film even come from?”
“I think that’s a mystery I would first like to solve that who are these well-wishers who are speaking my mind without me even being aware.”
The Abhishek rumors were there earlier too, I’d posted some of these links. SRK was also talked about. But yeah Irrfan seemed to be in for a while. Also, don’t just believe what you read in the media. In any case I certainly hope this latest story is incorrect!
The Chennai Box-Office is back to normal, after the recent price hike. Things have now settled down as Tamil content has finally hit the bull’s eye at the CBO. The moral of the story is – if content is good, the audiences will come to the theatres.
This week’s big winner at CBO is Madhavan – Vijay Sethupathi action packed cat and mouse thriller Vikram Vedha, which has netted (minus GST) around Rs 1.30 Cr. The film is being liked and has taken a very good opening.
At number two is Hip Hop Tamizha’s debut film as hero Messaya Murukku, which too has taken a good opening in smaller screens and is in the number two position. At number three is the Hollywood war drama Dunkirk.
And at number four is the new Telugu hit Fidaa, which has taken a good opening and is being liked by all. SpiderMan Homecoming continues to hang around at number five.
It isn’t just that Vikram-Vedha appears to be doing well, but it’s literally been years since Maddy was in a critically well-received film. Can’t wait to check this out.
Saala Khadoos is on Netflix but it had a pretty unimpressive trailer, I couldn’t bring myself to watch it (my wife, a huge Maddy fan, confirmed that it sucked)… I hadn’t realized it was commercially succesful…
This is the remake of the tamil movie Kalyana Samayal Saadam. That one was a good multiplex watch – about an hero who has erectile dysfunction. I hope they don’t make it vulgar in Hindi…

A. We are aware of this but there is no bigger verdict than ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER and its impossible to think of one that makes the film look bigger and also fits into the present rating system. Its true they are far bigger hits but you can only slot them into highest verdict. If you have a good name for the biggest verdict than can send it to us.
Q. Has a film like Dunkirk worked in India?
A. Not really collections fell on Monday to 50% of day one. It will be a decent runner buts about all and has not really been appreciated.
Q. What was the total budget of Tubelight?.
A. Budget 62 crore plus PA at 21 crore. Salman Khan remuneration as actor is satellite which is 50-55 crore crore. So budget mid range is 135 crore.
Q. Is Salman Khan still the biggest star even after Tubelight considering Dangal with Aamir Khan has 1875 crore worldwide?
A. Worldwide it would be Aamir Khan now as long as a China release is guaranteed but in India Salman Khan is still ahead as Aamir Khan does not have many films. For the tables to turn either Aamir Khan has to up the volume and these films have to work or Salman Khan releases have to under perform.
It’s apt that the youtube page mentions the “sizzling chemistry” between Siddharth and Jacqueline — these two do look like something out of a lab experiment with plastic gone wild.
I am utterly alienated by this sort of aesthetic, and its dominance over the last decade or more has been the death of commercial cinema.
It’s hilarious though that so many of the stories talk about losing weight and so on. It’s a sign of the times that even when one is playing a poet the ‘workout’ bit seems much more important than working on things like diction et al!
LOL, if one has to actually say this there is already a problem! SRK will offend his family audience with such remarks! I guess this is meant to be a pitch for JHMS. It just isn’t a very good one!

I lost confidence after acid attack. She held my hand. Is that nepotism?
In a tweet, Simran writer Apurva Asrani spoke about how we all are guilty of nepotism, including Kangana Ranaut. He wrote that she first hired her sister Rangoli as her manager and is now promoting her brother. Coming to the actor’s rescue, Rangoli Chandel, sister of Kangana, took to Twitter and gave a suitable response to many on nepotism debate.

Kangana Ranaut coined the word nepotism on Karan Johar’s show, calling the director the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ in Bollywood industry. Since then, the word has become a rage and has given rise to innumerable conversations around how justified it is to be favoured by relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs. While we just thought the entire controversy has died, Karan brought it back while hosting the IIFA 2017. Just like everybody else, Apurva Asrani, the writer of Kangana’s next film Simran, gave his opinion on the term and explained how everyone, including Kangana, is guilty of nepotism.
He wrote in a tweet, “I hired my brother as addnl writer on my new film. #Kangana hired her sister as manager & now promotes her brother. All guilty of #nepotism?”
While Kangana has not given any sort of reaction, her sister Rangoli was quite miffed and thought to give it back to all those for whom Kangana has become their claim to fame.
“Apurva Asrani acid doesn’t kill you it just distorts your face in a way that wherever you go people’s jaw drops in a very sad way. Kangana nt only got my treatment done but saw to it that I gained my confidence back, she held my hand and took me to the sets. I m topper in M.Sc microbiology I didn’t loose my degree after the attack but I lost my confidence and started to wear veil. I am her sister and i am with her in that capacity, my brother is a pilot and don’t you dare to bring him in to this. You are after your 5 mins fame which you don’t deserve so please calm down and Relax. Drinking coffee n watching films with your own little brother is not nepotism you emotionally illiterate person.That’s called Love .#sigh which u lack,” she wrote explaining the term nepotism and the difference between what Kangana’s thought behind hiring her was.
She later questioned other publications, “As far as I m concerned, when I had acid attack I lost all my confidence then she held my hand and got me back to life. Is that cald Nepotism?? I mean realy? Can you leave Kangana alone?hanging around with your own brother is not called you fool.”
In an earlier interview, Apurva had told indianexpress.com “I think the IFFA gag was in bad taste and people are right in condemning it. But the nepotism debate must move beyond making villains of the privileged. It is a problem with the system, across all sectors, and we need to realise that we are all guilty of it. When we hire our trusted family members and friends, use our clout to refer a friend, we are all nepotistic.”

I think you mean pic 16 and the guy is Mac Mohan.. he’s pretty familiar to everyone watching movies in 70’s. He’s also uncle of Raveena Tandon who was the chief at National Awards once and made sure Raveen won the Best Actress National Award for Daman. His last movie, I believe is Luck By Chance where ironically he’s invited as chief guest and asked to repeat his famous dialogue from Sholay.. which is just 2 words “Poore Pachas Hazaar”.

He’s a true blue legend! Impossible to think of the 70s without him. There were others like him too. All the supporting or bit parts. Leone famously spent more time casting for his bit roles than his major ones. I can understand this. The right kind of supporting cast adds texture to the film.

He got famous as Sambha from Sholay.. and that’s 1975 and then innumerable films in next 5 years and then 80’s and 90’s. Its said he did over 200 films. But to my mind, he’s part of the 70’s masala template film making..

I knew of the face. Many old VHS or films that parents would watch in early 90’s had that face. And some bald Caucasian dude. I remember every movie started with similar opening credit music. I can’t find it on YouTube, may have been a VHS thing only.

Back from Dunkirk.
Totally disappointed.
Mainly due to background music. I guess it’s due to IMAX auditorium music being loud but my God, there was hardly 3 minutes of silence in total in the entire movie. Otherwise it’s constant loud music and the part that really killed it is the constant loud bass thru out the film. It really wasn’t necessary. Not a single dialogue was audible.
It actually drained me out by the time movie ended.
The movie is well made. More of a thriller than war film.
But I’ll take Saving Private Ryan any day over this. Not sure what all critics are going gaga over.
Would love to hear Satyam, Master, Sanjanas and others thought on it after they see it.
Satyam, I had told you to go see it in IMAX but if you know the IMAX at your place is loud, skip it. Go see it in regular screen, hopefully the loudness will come down little.

Damn.. didn’t expect it at all. I already have tickets for IMAX. The last 2 movies I saw in IMAX were Interstellar and Gravity and both had more silence than dialogues. Maybe will take some cotton for my ears! 🙂

It was VERY loud. Too loud in fact. It might be the loudest movie I’ve ever seen.
I don’t mean like a gun shot here or an explosion there, I mean sustained loud noises for minutes at a time. For large sections of the movie the soundtrack and the effects merge in this cacophony of noise and it becomes difficult to differentiate between any of the sounds. On a number of occasions it actually distracted me from what was taking place on screen.
If you have trouble with prolonged loud noises you might consider waiting to see this until you can control the volume.
This is really unfortunate since I thought the movie was great otherwise. I’ve been a fan of Nolan’s for a while now but man I wish the guy would allow more space in his sound mixes.
EDIT: I want to promote the advice below of taking earplugs. The goal is not to stop people from seeing the movie, as I said before, it’s really great, I just wanted to warn people who might have issues with loud sounds.

On other hand I’m huge fan of Nolan and seen all his movies first day first day at least past decade and own all the Blu rays. Dunkirk was the only movie which didn’t impress me when announced coz of the war theme but the recent reviews have let me take a look. I’m also not a fan of too much noise. I was tortured during the 1st half of Jagga Jasoos with continuous songs. Maybe I’ll cancel the tickets now.

Ranbir will do well to keep himself out of Basu’s biopic on Kishore Kumar.
The reason he can ride through this series of flops is because the new guns have still some distance to catch up. Tiger’s Munna Micheal and Arjun Kapoor’s Mubarakan are both expected to do around 50 cr. Varun’s Judwa2 is expected to do 100 cr. Ranveer, even after BM, is expected to fetch only 150 cr from Padmavati.
Ranbir had already delivered a near 200 cr grosser in YJHD quite a while back. Yes, he had flops in between, but then again the Dutt biopic is expected to do 200-250 cr business. Another reason he is quite safe is because the likes of Abhishek/Hritik have fizzled out. And Ranbir is perhaps the only viable competition that Khans have in their fifties. If JHMS under performs, and Dutt clicks – it will give Ranbir a long shot at breaking the Khan hegemony in Bollywood for good.
On the other had, if Dutt flops/under-performs, he will be in deep trouble.

Btw, not saying everything will be hunky dory for Ranbir if Dutt clicks big. Abhishek/Hritik also threatened to take it to the next level when Dhoom 2 (2006) became one of the biggest hits of noughties. But they both lost their ways. In the meantime Aamir tasted tremendous success in TZP and Ghajini with their respective audience in 2007-08. And Wanted/Dabangg in 2009-10 gave a new lease of life to Salman. Both went on from there to dominate this decade.
But Dutt can create an opportunity for Ranbir to push the pedal from there. That itself can make Bollywood’s star system more interesting, which currently is in a status quo. Akshay is too old to break the Khan hegemony at this this point and position himself as the future. He is doing well in his own space and will probably continue to do so.

Its better for some new blood to rise to the top than the Khans continuing like this to their sixties. Aamir doing so as a combination of actor/director/producer is fine and good for the industry. He has anyways shown the way by playing his age with white-air and pot-belly in Dangal.
But its a bit tedious to see SRK doing romcoms at this age and Salman to be the action star with a tummy. I would rather like to see Ranbir doing great in the romcom space and Tiger doing TZH with same success as Khans.
It is no good to have a vacuum in the industry with aging superstars and no successors in sight.

Readers may recall that Bollywood Hungama had earlier reported about J.P. Dutta planning to bring in real life officials from the Indian Army in order to provide physical training to the lead actors of his upcoming film Paltan. Needless to say that, J.P. Dutta is leaving no stone unturned to make his film look as authentic as possible.
Speaking about the same, Siddhanth Kapoor (who plays an important role of a soldier in Paltan), revealed that the reason why J.P. Dutta had decided to rope in only a handful of junior artistes and appoint real- life soldiers to feature as officers in the film was to make the film look extremely convincing. Meanwhile, J.P. Dutta stated that the lead cast of his film have already kicked off training with the Indian Army personnels. He added that his cast needed to keep themselves totally fit as Paltan was a war film with lot of action. With the timely help from the Central Government, J.P. Dutta had got all the required permissions to shoot in the sensitive zones near the Indo- China border. The film’s shooting will get started in September in Ladakh.

Watched War for Planet of the Apes. I have been a big fan of this trilogy and really loved the Dawn (part 1), liked Rise (Part 2) and was really looking to watch this and got time and chance.
However the movie turned our to be different. It was not bad but it was unexpected. Something like what happened with me during Wonder woman, which was a tragic love story disguised in a superhero genre.
War is basically a social drama disguised in a war epic. It beautifully touches upon humanity as well as Animal Emotion, for a lack of word calling it Animality. There are several sequences which touches your heart.
However the movie is agonizingly slow to the point where you can actually take meal breaks and still you will not miss a scene.
Caesar the captain of the Ape clan has given a performance of a life time.It is actually an Oscar winning performance. Not sure if it will quality as he is an ape.
The film ends on what created the planet of apes and why humans never deserved to rule it in the first place.

An interesting take on Ranbir (This may become an alternate reality than climbing the superstar ladder in case Dutt fails. Has happened previously with Abhishek/Hritik.):

Bs article. IMHO Ranbir is a good acting talent – yes privileged and supported by media.
He’s a natural actor who is making very poor film choices. Experimental cinema is good if done in less expensive ways. I’m hardly a huge fan of his in the kinds of genres he deals with – the BAH, AA, YJHD, ADHM etc. I don’t particularly like the soppy romantic comedy or dramas.
This is pure overreaction to a dud. It’s happened before; this is when that nepotism argument is the opposite. Guys like Abhishek, Ranbir etc get judged incredibly harshly. Ranbir’s acting in these films is on a par. If he cuts out the BV, JJ or does them on lower budgets he’s fine and won’t fail.

I think compared to average acting talent in Bollywood, the likes of Ranbir/Abhishek dont fall behind, instead they are decent enough. Hritik was in more gimmicky space like Tiger with focus on body-building, dancing, stunts and other superfluous stuff, rather than acting. But the media and the trade have always been kind to these guys due to their lineage, and that too for a long time.
But at some point the failures can pile up so much, that those quarters can dry up too. Media does not focus on Abhishek anymore, Hritik’s Kabil fetches low distribution price (and still fails!), and so on. Same can happen with Ranbir too!

I’ll say Hrithik got a perfect launch for a very poor actor who can dance, look good (read plastic), a good soundtrack, drive women crazy etc. But barring a few films he’s been managing his career poorly.
Heck his co actress had Gadar follow and she’s nowhere to be seen.
He’s still in a rat race but he’s mostly out injured or absent.

Hritik cant act so his choices are limited. In that space even Tiger’s films are looking repetitive with dancing and stunts, although he has not done too many films.
I am amazed that Munna Michael has opened in 3000 screens! That is a lot of screens and as expected the movie has opened poorly (15% as per some reports). Salman’s dance based film with Remo may be risky too, as such dancing movies seem to have limited appeal.

Abhishek did the same. He went for bigger budgets like JBJ (A no brainer as YRF at the time had delivered for him), Drona was a huge expensive mistake. He got films from Ratnam, ROM, Gowariker who one would think many would crave for AT THAT TIME. All were underperformers, he was than touted as a wooden non actor which is quite ridiculous if you watch Guru, BnB, KANK or Yuva. He’s not recovered but when he produced Paa on a small budget – quite an experimental film it worked, absolutely Big B is the reason for the success but the economics were right. He will not recover in all probability as from Day 1 expectations were extraordinary and it’s impossible to be the son of the biggest star ever and launch in character roles – the Bollywood system just won’t do it and even it allows it he’d get mullered. Ranbir is better placed; Hirani is not as risky and he carries the critical & commercial expectations with aplomb than after that it’s on Ranbir to make good choices as his talent is obvious.

As you said, Abhishek lost out when his prestige line-up of Raavan (Ratnam), KHJJS (Gowariker) and D6 (ROM) failed in quick time. It did not help that more commercial ventures like JBJ, Drona, Players or Game did not work either. I guess for star kids it all boils down to the choices they make. I agree that Ranbir’s choices after Dutt will decide his fate (provided Dutt works). He has not signed any new film lately.
But then, if Dutt under-performs, the choices can dry up.

Those films followed Guru, JA and RDB right if I’m correct? If so Abhishek would be an idiot not to sign them. Rahman scored music for 2. He had Aishwarya & Deepika for 2 as co-stars so these were simply underperforming films but only the Gowariker one was an outright dud.

By the right choices I guess the script sense comes into play. Aamir rejected Swades after Lagaan, and SRK jumped into it. The role of Mohan was a good one to to play, but Aamir found the script boring. Swades could have been AKP’s second production, but Gowariker had to float his own production company after Aamir pulled out. I think many actors just go by the roles and big directors/producers instead of judging the film/script as a whole. That is where the choices can go wrong.

Agree but I think this sixth sense is obviously impossible for everyone to have otherwise every Friday we’ll be running to the theatres. And this sense has developed after some 10-15 years in the industry and hidden motivation of media rejection IMO.
Abhishek in 06-10 phase is quite young industry wise and is never really got into a career position where he could say no. Senior guys with much more secure stardom and filmographies can. He’s still a child in that sense. But yes if he had the magic ball that Aamir has he could make those calls. Frankly no one does.
And sometimes it’s simple destiny not to repeat greatness. He is a solid enough actor to do peripheral character roles with edge ala Irfan Khan or nawazuddin siddiqui, maybe nowhere near as talented.
But this would be like Messi’s son being a star in division 3 of the Argentina league. It’ll not be enough for Bollywood – they’d pit him against his father no matter what.
The best thing for Abhishek was to after Paa just be a producer actor in his own films. It was his way of proving it’s his success alone.

That is also one reason I am a bit skeptical about Dutt. It may be bit foolish to doubt Hirani but even the best minds can go wrong at times. Sanjay Dutt biopic does not sound a typical Hirani comedy/satire with a social message. I am sure playing the role of Sanjay Dutt on screen is enticing, so is working with Hirani – but hopefully that is not the reasons for Ranbir to do this. Good news is that even Aamir has said the script is good.
Just getting Sanjay’s look right or copying his mannerisms is not going to ensure good content nor a satisfying film.

Firstly, I think strongly that what we often pass-off as good script sense is actually a deep-rooted interest in film-making (apart from an intuition about what stories audience will connect to). Even during his chocolate-faced heartthrob days in his twenties, he used to talk about his interest in film-making, interest in screenplay and scripting, etc. Some of these interviews are now on youtube also. He has also talked about the importance of pre-production, where he can tell how the film will eventually shape up. He strongly supervises the post-production work of his own productions. He did a commendable job as a director in TZP. So it is a culmination of all these various film-making skill-sets that he has evolved with time. In his twenties, he used to feel bad about his choice of work. By 30, he had taken a stance that he will work only in films that he liked which resulted in one-film-a-year for most of later nineties. And by 35 he had floated AKP to produce Lagaan in order to work on his own terms.
So NO, not everyone can have such interest and insight into one’s line of work nor can one evolve so much over the years! It is futile to compare him or his skills with anyone else.
Regarding Abhishek, I also feel he should have continued as a producer and acted in some of his own films like Paa. Ranbir has spent more than a decade in the industry and is in a better position to say no and choose wisely.

I think you have entered him first into the discussion. I’ve no doubt that interest in your craft can enable better decisions. And no one should be compared in kind. That’s not to say he’s so far ahead or anything – just in the context of choices and career management he is very far ahead.
Everyone is different. I could essay most these stars but it’ll be boring.
Abhishek I liked as the obvious route was to mimmick his father’s image. He didn’t really. +1.
He could have produced Don and done roles like that, he didn’t. +1.
He really messed up in hindsight with his image. At the time when he was called overweight or lazy I’d defend it but now I’d say a little care and listening in these matters i.e. stay fit like Akshay Kumar no need for big muscles or abs. He should have here IMO. -1.
Beyond that he made reasonable choices that most would (unless they have a more rooted interest in filmmaking). +1.
He should avoid multistarrrers in fact D3 he should have learnt from D2 won’t add to his career. -1.
He should have produced more. -1.
He’s basically back to 0 by my math, starting again.

Way back when i first visited this site, I said the fascination for Abhishek in this blog surprises me…It still surprises me as since that time he hasnt done anything to change my view point…Not that I hate him or anything but he is not a very important hero to have so much discussion on. I have no hate nor any liking towards him to even analyze his career choices..Where he does relatively well are the Sarkar kind of roles. He was very good in Yuva and thats one film where he really took me by surprise though…Otherwise he is just ok…i dont honestly think he is a great actor at all…
And IMHO Ranbir is in a different stratosphere to Abhishek when it comes to acting…

Meanwhile the only film I connected with Ranbir was Rocket Singh and to an extent the Pacino act of Rajneeti. He was nice and goofy in Barfi but was ably supported by an engaging act by Priyanka plus Pritam did extremely well and gave us memorable and somewhat ‘different’ music.( kishore kumar kind of wacky tracks).
Yes lack of competition is serving him well but he is unable to capitalize on that and in my ‘bollywood’s opinion will turn out to be a one trick pony similar to many others. There is no thespian here….cannot work in masala or massy setting….loud is out too. He would be best served to ape aamir and remain within his own comfort zone.

In general I find the dislike of Ranbir, Abhishek odd as barring Ranbir’s womanising antics they are not particularly controversial celebrities. They don’t get done for taxes, or in court cases for murder or divorces or killing wildlife or embroiled in politics around nationalism or bullying.
Basically they are fairly clean celebs. So maybe for some Salman fans elsewhere I’ve noticed a pattern whereby they go after his ex girlfriends’ boyfriends. Kind of kindergarten stuff.
This is the syndrome of anything connected to your favourite you must either favour (if it’s Farah, KJo or Aditya for SRK) or you must dislike (if it’s Vivek, Abhishek or Ranbir for Salman).
And on Barfi at least the ‘act’ worked.

Without that level of interest in film-making and talents for it, Ranbir (or anyone else) will not be able to achieve even a small iota of what Aamir has done from Lagaan to Dangal. So let us leave that aside.
What Ranbir can perhaps do to ‘ape’ Aamir is try some ‘rough’ roles to break his chocolate hero image. Once Aamir was in thirties he had moved on to Rangeela, Ghulam, Sarfarosh etc with elan and considerable success. Ranbir is already in mid-thirties. So let him first take this baby-step, and then we can think of him going the Aamir way.

Well, Salman fans cannot make or break a star that is for sure. It was clearly visible during Tubelight fiasco and no fan showed any mercy for a substandard product and the movie was not even allowed a decent run there. As so-called Salman fan, I have watched movies of all the 3 actors listed above irrespective of the surrounding noise, but my own perceptions are substantiated by the poor outcome of their movies and eventual career overall. May be they got overhyped by the fact of dating Salman’s exes and media took more interest in them than they deserved on their own merit…..so in hindsight it has helped them to be in the limelight and be noticed…so important for career dealing with cameras and movies.
On Ranbir, his womanizing should be least bothersome for any true lover of cinema. Leo Dicaprio is a prime example where talent and class act drowns and deflects all the womanizing and debauchery he is associated with and you just fall in love with the character he plays on screen. Among the people listed Abhi seems to be a genuinely nice guy and it shows in his relations with one and all. Vivek is a typical big mouthed Mayo’ite Rajput boarding school product. I have no clue on Ranbir though he comes across the slimy kind who I feel should be man enough to use his six or twelve inches to entice dames instead of baiting them with marriage/living in inducement.
But as I said earlier it’s the movie and eventual talent which speaks louder than anything else in market place and public arena.

Have to admire your love for Salman in how everyone bar him has a fault but if Salman has one all kinds of reasons and forgiveness is given. I mean Ranbir is probably a slimy Bollywood actor like many others. But Salman beating women?

I’ll say Dunkirk is more engaging and it’s a short film so never gets tiring.
When I say loud, I don’t mean the guns, bombs, etc. being loud or loud music playing in the back ground, I mean a constant loud bass playing in the back ground. Not sure what was the need for it. I’m sure Nolan and others part of this film watched it on IMAX prior to release to see how it looks/sounds, surprised they didn’t take any action on it.
I mean you’ll be lucky if you’re able to hear 3% of the dialogues thru out the whole movie.
Some of the visuals are good, specially how it looks on IMAX but nothing we haven’t seen before.
I surely think critics are going gaga over nothing. This is in no way Oscar material.
Weird feeling, I felt exhausted after watching the film.

Remember Lena hai, lena hai? A hit song of the 90s from a film titled Bomb Blast. That was the last time we saw Ronit Roy dancing. Here’s the video to remind you of how it looked.
He shakes a leg again in Munna Michael after almost three decades, and that makes for a promising opening. His character believes Michael (Jackson, of course) lives forever, but getting thrown out of his dancing troupe, wavers his faith in dancing as a profession. So, he takes to drinking. This is what disillusioned artists do in Bollywood. But that’s not all. He then finds an orphan in a dustbin and brings him home. Because this is also what Bollywood does.
Like typical Bollywood kids, this one too grows up to become Munna (Tiger Shroff), a super dancer, in one song. His antics and need for money takes him to Delhi where he begins teaching dance steps to Mahinder Fauji (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a land shark and a closet dancer. Their fine-tuned bromance goes for a toss the moment Dolly (Nidhhi Agerwal) enters the frame. Oh, we never saw that coming!
Just joking.
Now, it’s finally a film where everybody would look disinterested and jump at a chance to break into a song. Why? Because this is what Bollywood does.
Some assistant must have reminded Sabbir Khan that it is 2017 and the film is looking like the glossier version of the ‘80s movies. So, he brings in the idea of dance face-off and a reality show. How would you fit in Tiger Shroff otherwise? How innovative!
Taking a cue from MJ’s signature moonwalking to picking a dialogue from Wong Kar-wai’s Chunking Express, Sabbir Khan keeps trying to infuse Munna with traits that can strike a balance between Delhi and Mumbai. It’s simple math. Base the film in two biggest territories because that is what Bollywood does.
He isn’t done yet, but Tiger Shroff can’t bear the pressure anymore, so Sabbir Khan shifts his focus to Nawazuddin, one of the finest of our times, and makes him do one of the most bizarre roles of his lifetime.
Hamming his way to Hotel Bluestar, a property he owns in Delhi, Siddiqui probably knows how it is going to look in the end. Still he tries to not seem completely clueless. His efforts go in vein though. It’s sad to see him sleepwalking in Munna Michael after a top-class performance in Mom.
Khan’s vision of making Nawazudin Siddiqui acrobats doesn’t help either. You can easily figure out the body doubles. Even if you don’t, background dancers make sure you do. Their close ups are so over the top that you would wander whether they all decided together to look in a certain way?
Talking of close ups, the award for most exciting close up goes to Farah Khan who judges a reality show in Munna Michael. Her enthusiasm knows no boundary and every time Tiger Shroff does a summersault, you wait for Farah’s ‘oh my god’ reaction.
All this is happening because Dolly wants to make her father proud by becoming an accomplished dancer. By the way, we never meet her father. She announces her arrival with these lines:
Hil jaande sab mere naal, jab main shake karaan
From UK to Nainital, sab shake karaan.
It may sound like a conspiracy theory, but her striking similarity with Kriti Sanon might have prompted Sabbir Khan to cast her. Sanon was the heroine of Khan’s earlier film Heropanti.
Her debut isn’t impressive, but you can’t signal her out. Everyone, with special mention of Pankaj Tripathi, is equally out of touch in Munna Michael.
MJ should live forever, MJ will live forever, but this isn’t the right tribute to the moonwalking King Of Pop. This forgettable 138-minute film can be better described as this one-liner somebody whispered in the dark right before the end credits: Ye sab alag hi zone me hain (They’re in a different zone).

Munna Michael Day 1 Box Office Collection Update: Tiger Shroff’s dance-action film has hit the screens today. It is the first film for masses since Bahubali 2 so the expectations are pretty high.
The last couple of months has turned out to be very poor for Bollywood. There have been too many failures and only a couple of films were able to succeed. Thus the trade was hoping that Munna Michael will provide some relief. However, the film has got a poor opening.
As per the official announcement, the film is released in 3000 screens. The overall occupancy in the morning shows was in the range of 15-20% in all over India which is a poor start. The opening is better in Mumbai circuit thanks to the genre. It has got a disastrous start in Delhi and East Punjab. The film is also poor in major multiplexes.
Munna Michael is again one of those films where the makers had failed to capitalize the potential of star and film. Tiger Shroff’s fan following is in North India and masses and he has mostly done action films. But here Munna Michael is more of a dance film and such movies have an audience in Mumbai circuit only.
For masala films, a good opening is a must for surviving at the box office. As they don’t have the evening audience like the content oriented films. But here MM has become more of a word of mouth film and will need big turnaround over the weekend. It looks pretty tough considering the early response.
Other Hollywood film Dunkirk has got a good opening as the occupancy in the morning shows is 25%. As expected, it has opened better in urban multiplexes and will grow further in the evening. Unlike other Hollywood films, it has not been dubbed in Hindi or any other language which is understandable as it is mainly for the high-class audience. The film has high chances to emerge a success.

As expected Munna Michael has failed to show big growth in the later half of the day. This was expected as the film is not for the multiplex audience. The film is set for a poor opening day despite getting a good number of screens.

Thoughts on QUEEN –
I finally got around to watching Kangana’s ‘QUEEN.’ I had been deliberately avoiding this movie, though it was staring at me through NETFLIX for a long, long time and, in lieu of it, watching insignificant, not spirit-lifting but table-uprooting films like ‘MASTI”: Plus, have been trying to sort through some issues and hence, was just not interested in talking about anything, especially the ‘lynching’ and the glorification of ‘side-heroes’ like Tanaji Malusare.
‘QUEEN’ is surely a good movie by any standards but I was stuck wondering what is it that the public and critics went orgasmic over – apart from Kangana’s performance and Rao’s willingness to submit to chauvinism. As a person recovering from the trauma of a fiancée backing out at the last moment, it is quite understandable the instinctive decision of the girl to just ‘get out’ from the immediate surroundings: The ‘self-discovery’ is what I had a problem with. Does it even ring quite true? And through what lens? The initiation point for Kangana’s character of Rani toward ‘liberalization’ and ‘self-awareness’ is through Lisa Haydon’s ‘Vijay Lakshmi.’ [The makers were trying to impress the audience through this contrast, of having a traditional South-Indian name doing unSouth-Indian things like blasting f-bombs or discussing the size of a man’s brain, but sorry, not wooed-in at all. Of course, she has to have a kid born out of wed-lock, and she has to go every night to the clubs with an army of condoms, get-drunk and act drunk in front of cops or cab-drivers or the Eiffel tower. Who cares for the kid at that time? That’s not going to be shown fellas!! It’s outside of the scope of ‘additional’ dialogues and scenes devised by Kangana.] And obviously, where else does one do all that? In a country and city far, far-away from India!]. And then, she ‘discovers’ life and tangential meanings and experiences to it through her hostel-mates, who are, as critically depicted in the movie, ‘passing’ influences. There’s then the sham of a climax, where it’s conveyed that the ‘claustrophobic’ expectations and nature of marriage are kicked out the door when Rani returns the ring and walks away from the fiancée.
As I mentioned before, it’s her self-discovery as portrayed in the film that stood out like a weird-thumb for me: It’s the idea that fleeting experiences and learning-moments can endure a life-time that’s disturbing. Yes, she comes from a traditional mind-set entrenched in Rajouri or Old Rajinder Nagar but gains ‘exposure’ and wisdom in Paris. Pray, then, how’s this different from all of Ranbir Kapoor’s discovering self at 33+? And when I say that, I am only talking of the depictions in ‘alternative’ films heralded by the likes of Kashyap and company. In earlier times, one discovered himself or herself in the bittery cold of the Himalayas; today, Ranbir’s or Lisa’s characters discover themselves after having uninhibited sex in BOI’s favorite haunt, Europe or the US. She walked out of a marriage that was bound to be ‘role-driven’; fair-enough. What happens when you turn 50? [And if you are working in IT, what happens at 35 when you have to swallow BP an Diabetes medication to convince your bosses that you are doing well at your job?] Do the ‘suffocating’ institutions of marriage and/or any sort of traditional relationships still trouble one when one has to get-up with a hand on the knee to get to the medicine cabinet? Is that ever-explored in such kinds of cinema? It’s quite lucrative to bring in young bums on the seat when the arc of life is still evolving; but what happens after? And this’s the reason I have always questioned this ‘new-age’ film-makers who are actually no different from the much-maligned film-makers of the ‘70s and the ‘80s who supposedly focused only on the ‘broader’ narrative that didn’t quite boil down to ‘specifics.’
The film’s end credits show Rani talking about her Face-book time-line where it ONLY shows the course of her life in 2014. [Talking of self-discovery, Rani after all her Parisian and Amsterdam exploits, still has yet to realize the fakery of social-networking where everyone’s life ‘rocks.’ She still believes Face-book to be the ultimate conveyor of her ‘self-discovery.’ And she is still happy that her posts get ‘LIKES.’]

Saw Dunkirk on 70 MM. I didn’t have the IMAX 70 MM option at my end. Had to choose between IMAX and 70 MM and felt the latter was the better choice. It’s a very impressive film at many levels but I had mixed feelings about it. I’ll get into some of the reasons in another note. Can’t do so at the moment. I do accept that on an authentic IMAX screen and with 70 MM it probably is a very extraordinary experience. Nonetheless some of my issues would remain.

I haven’t seen it yet but it feels like quite a departure from the Nolan film. Everything else till now allowed so much room for his stamp or creativity but Dunkirk must have a lot of factual emphasis. Also I don’t particularly remember studying this hugely in history lessons so I’m not sure how popularized this part of WW2 is comparable to other significant moments like the breakout or build up itself (which was so intriguing to me at least how Hitler came to power post a suppressed Germany, the hyperinflation in mid 20’s, his whole history, propaganda etc), pearl harbour, the battles on the Russian front, the battle of Britain itself, the key US battles, the atomic bombs, concentration camps etc. I found the trailer less than enthralling; no doubt Nolan will nail it but just not that interesting part of the war for me.

I liked Dunkirk a lot. Im glad Nolan didnt bow to people’s expectations of ehat a war film should be like. Instead he comes up with a uniquely shot and narrated film which is more of a survival genre than a war film. Maybe it was never meant to be a fact based story.
Definitely an ace effort with an excellent background score and some amazingly shot scenes which only a master likeNolan could pull off

Lipstick Under My Burkha after garnering some superb reviews and decent day 1 opening has shown some amazing growth on day 2 at the box office.
Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Rachna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumara and Plabita Borthakur has collected 2.17 Crores on its day 2 at the box office. The day one of the film was 1.22 Crores and it has been released on mere 400 screens.
The two day total of the film now stands at 3.39 Crores. The word of mouth is super positive and hence the film has shown over 75% of growth on its second day. Sunday should also see a considerable growth in the collections.

Munna Micheal had a drop on the second day as it grossed 6 crore nett. This is on the expected lines as a film which is such a wide release and not really collecting in big city multiplexes is always likley to drop on day two. The film has business of 12.50 crore nett plus in two days but this is how much the film had to get on day one to get to that 70 crore nett plus mark. Here this was never on, even 10 crore nett was impossible on day one due to the promos not appealing to A centres outside Maharashtra. The film should manage some growth on Sunday but its unlikely to be much. The hope for the film is a good hold on Monday and steady weekdays which could take it to a respectable total but thats about it. The first day made sure that a successful film was never on the cards. The first two day collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

Jagga Jasoos had huge growth of around 75% on its second Saturday which was expected as it main audience of kids and families in metros come out on the Saturday. The pattern of last week is created again and the growth is even higher as its doing much lower numbers now.
This hardly changes anything for the film as it has been totally rejected by the core audience. The second weekend will go to around 5.50-5.75 crore nett but lifetime business is likely to close below the 55 crore nett mark. The business of Jagga Jasoos till date is as follows.

I think it’s too easy an excuse to say pressure. They were under 6 an over. No huge drama was required to go big hitting. Some simple easy cricket was all required.
One can understand a huge chase but this was inexplicable and poor judgement.

Well, India Women’s batting is top heavy. Sushma Verma, Jhulan Goswami onwards the tail starts. They need a better keeper Batswomen. Gone are the days when Ajay Ratra was sure shot selection. Sushma Verma has an average of 6.4. Which is poor.

Strangely without much promotion.. Devdas was released all over US cinemas just for 1 day to celebrate 15h Anniversary. Too many cinemas and shows.. don’t know if there was any audience.

Munna Micheal has done well on Sunday as it has collected well in most parts outside the five big metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore. The film is looking at growth of around 35% on Sunday which will take its collections to around 8 crore nett and the weekend to 20.50 crore nett. This is not a good figure but the film looked a bit of a write off over the first two days but Sunday gives it a fighting chance. There has not been any film which has grown 35% on Sunday this year until Munna Micheal. It is this trend which gives some hope for Monday at least.
Last week Jagga Jasoos grew very well on Saturday as that was the day when its target audience in the metros comes out in numbers but eventually it just flattered to deceive. This could be the case here as well because Sunday is the day when the audience for Munna Micheal which is outside the metros comes out in numbers. It could be a dead cats bounce but only Monday will tell that. The film will have to do around 4 crore nett Monday which would be a decent figure and a solid trend. This looked impossible after the first two days but now there is some hope which the industry will take considering how films are falling like ninepins.

I really doubt if JJ can be called a liked movie. Its appreciation is v limited even in the metros. Its doing around 7 at imdb, but the number of votes are also low. The sustenance is at v low level in the second weekend and it wont be able to double its weekend collection in the end. So its not just the high costs. As for MM, even after the Sunday growth, the collections are in the same range as JJ’s opening day.
I tend to agree with the general narrative in the trade sites that Bollywood has lost its way with lack of content. The BO is simply too dismal at this point. Neither JHMS or TEPK look that exciting to turn things around in a major way. If they can, more power to them. But the promotional material of both the films are quite average. Last time a trailer really worked well was BB2, and the movie also turned out to be a satisfying cinematic experience. Audience seems to be demanding more now after BB2 success. Only film that I am looking forward to this year is Secret Superstar, primarily due to my faith in Aamir and his films. It also seems a good thematic followup to Dangal in terms of women empowerment. But a lot will depend on the interest it generates during promotions (the teaser was strictly average). Apart from that some of next year’s films seem interesting like 2.0, Dutt and TOH.

Rishi Kapoor lashed out at director Anurag Basu after the lukewarm response to son Ranbir Kapoor’s new film, Jagga Jasoos. Calling him irresponsible, the actor said that the Basu fails to complete films on time. In an interview with Mid-Day, Rishi Kapoor also slammed music composer Pritam.
“Till Wednesday, Anurag Basu was still mixing the film. Can you imagine that? Pritam (composer) probably delivered the music only a week before. What can you say? You don’t take an opinion from anybody. Today’s filmmakers are doing this with everybody. They don’t show their films before release to take opinions, and treat it as though they’re making a nuclear bomb. I didn’t hate or love the film. I only felt it needed to be abridged by 20 minutes. But who is going to give that opinion to them? I totally agree with Ekta (Kapoor) when she threw him out from her film. He had problems with Rakesh Roshan while working on Kites (2010). He’s such an irresponsible director that he doesn’t complete the film. It was supposed to release three times in the past two years, but it kept getting delayed.
Asked about why the film wasn’t released in some international markets on time, Rishi Kapoor again blamed Basu’s delays. “It did not release in Singapore because you have to deliver it five days in advance. It did not release in the Gulf on Thursday because it was only delivered to them on Thursday. This is unreasonable and irresponsible. You may be thinking you are making the Taj Mahal, but you are supposed to make it ready on time. Even Pritam delays his submissions. [It was later promoted as] a kids’ film. But, a kids’ film also has to release at the right time, like during the school vacations. At that time too, Anurag Basu wasn’t ready. There’s economics and maths involved. Everything is not just about creativity.”
“You may be the biggest director in the world,” he said, “but nobody would like to work with you because you are irresponsible. There is somebody else’s money involved in this. I trusted you, and this is what you give us? Ranbir hasn’t held back on spending money on it. You even threw Govinda out of the film. If you don’t want Govinda to work in your film, why did you ask him in the first place?”

He mentioned he is helpless with a director like Anurag Basu who doesn’t work with a script. He regretted working as producer on this movie and wanted to shelve it multiple times but let it go and then completed.

He’ll cancel a 40-day schedule on the third day because he feels it’s not working. When Barfi started, the character I was playing was supposed to be very intense and serious. After 10 days, he suddenly comes to me and says, ‘Maza nahin aaraha yaar. Yeh bahut matlab serious film ho rahin hain. Let’s try and make it more fun’. That’s when the Chaplin and all started coming in. Barfi was successful. So, we forgive that process. So, if Jagga Jasoos does not work, I don’t think this process can be forgiven because it’s irresponsible. You know other people’s time, money (is involved), the other producers waiting for you.”
Ranbir also says that he regrets producing, calling it a “Big mistake. First and last time. And (Anurag is the) wrong person to produce a film with, because you have no control. And it just makes you feel useless because he is running everything. I can’t take credit for this film. I am very happy I produced this film. I don’t know much about me acting in the film. I don’t know if I am good or not but I am happy to have produced a film like this in India.”

I can think of TZP. Amol Gupte took a few director shots but Aamir was not happy. He sent him packing. He was the producer. I’m not saying it’s ethical but if the overall project is better it is the right decision for anyone connected to the film. Problem here is deeper, Basu is producer as well and Ranbir actor – UTV/Disney should have really played a role of mediator here. And emphasised a concrete release date.

Not defending Basu – he’s self indulgent director probably but it seems like Kapoor and son waited till box office fate was sealed before they launched their attacks.

They are only talking after the film – before the film I heard Ranbir on a UK radio and he wasn’t speaking about issues with Basu he was selling his film, why he liked it and why people should watch it. Him and Katrina were happy to try and sell the dud. He’s happy to pay distributors etc. No point showing your balls now, should have 3 years ago.

This blame game serves no one. They all have been part of it and should share the responsibility of the failure. No point in ranting against each other. As Basu, Ranbir and Disney are all co-producers, all of them will suffer losses on JJ.
Anurag Basu should move on to directing small films again. Ranbir needs to select films with more care. Disney had already decided to close shop after Mohenjodaro.

Santoshi to direct it may have been better. With the madness of AAA and APKGK he may have been more experienced and professional to deliver here.

Shah Rukh Khan believes that love stories are made by directors who are sensitive and understand women’s perspective about romance. The ‘Raees’ actor who is collaborating with Imtiaz Ali for the first time for ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ said, “I haven’t seen Imtiaz’s films, to be honest, but when I met him, I found him extremely gentle and sensitive. Amongst the people I had worked with earlier, it was the same quality that Yash ji, Adi, Karan (had). They are personally very different but also very sensitive.” While Shah Rukh does not consider himself a romantic person, he even revealed that Imtiaz had earlier approached him with the idea of a man “trying to commit suicide” but he instantly dismissed that and asked for a “happier story”, giving birth to ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. I guess its the insecurity of losing your superstardom that prevents him from crossing the line. It will likely remain this way till he is a top star. To his credit he still commands a considerable pull at BO (as we saw with Raees opening), even after 20 years since 95. Considering the dismal state of BO these days, a 20 cr opening for JHMS is going to be cheered by the trade, distributors and exhibitors. Its only when he eventually loses his appeal as a commercial superstar (still some time away I believe) that we may see him really experimenting. Till then, he will hang around with his frequent small hits/semi-hits, which maybe interspersed with a big hit like CE at times.

Actor Riteish Deshmukh has apologised for a skit performed at the IIFA Awards after Pahlaj Nihalani, chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, sent the organisers a legal notice accusing them of defamation. Riteish, one of the two actors who performed the skit, told NDTV.com, “The segment was about our film industry being a big family and who plays what role in it. Yes, there was a comment on Pahlajji. The entire act was done in good humour but if it has upset him or anyone else, I would like to tender unconditional apology.” The skit, co-performed by Manish Paul, displayed a picture of Mr Nihalani and referred to him as a ‘watchman.’
Pahlaj Nihalani sent Wizcraft International, who organise the IIFA extravaganza, a five-page legal notice objecting to the use of his picture and the ‘denigrating title of watchman,’ describing the skit as a ‘sordid attempt to increase TRPs.’ He demands a public apology, a retractment of the footage broadcast on Colors and declaration IIFA will not defame him in future. Mr Nihalani also invoked a skit performed at the IIFA Awards by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar last year, in which ‘similar defamatory expressions’ were used, the legal notice alleged.

The story of the film is said to be based on journalist S Hussain Zaidi’s novel titled ‘Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’. Deepika will be seen essaying the role of gangster Rahima Khan and the film is reportedly said to release on October 2, 2018. The tale of Rahima Khan, popularly known as Sapna Didi revolves around how she plots to kill underworld don Dawood Ibrahim who is responsible for her husband’s death. Rahima shows the courage and valour to face the danger only to succumb at the hands on the underworld don when he gets to know her plans.

Indian eve’s defeat in 2017 World Cup final could serve as blessing in disguise for women’s cricket
In a country where cricket is followed almost like a religion and men in blue are household icons, there is little awareness about women’s cricket. The Indian eve’s grand entry in the world cup finale at Lord’s was a wow moment for millions who turned fans of the team’s grit and determination. But the eventual collapse of the team almost when it was about to create history left the fans disappointed.
But more than the defeat it was the display of sheer courage of the team that won the hearts of millions of fans across the country. Hopefully, the defeat shall prove a necessary trigger for the administrators to invest even more time and money into women’s cricket, as they do to men’s cricket, to hone the players’ skills and prepare them for a sure-shot victory on the world stage.

I really enjoyed watching the Final, even though they collapsed in the final stages. Without proper infrastructure, support and everything; they did manage to leave their mark at the world stage.

Munna Micheal has had a poor weekend of around 21 crore nett. The film grossed 8-8.25 crore nett on Sunday which was much higher than the Saturday figure of 6 crore nett apprx. If this Sunday growth can follow through on Monday then the film may be able to have some sort of run. The film has done better business in single screens but the big issue is that multiplexes in A, B and C centres did not perform which are a must for any commercial film.
The footfalls for the film are more than other films taking in 21 crore nett as a large chunk of the business has come from places with lower tickets. It has more footfalls than Sachin – A Billion Dreams which grossed 24.25 crore nett in the first weekend. The first weekend collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

So, here was a 24-year-old with no acting credentials who had already been launched as a lead in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, now a lead in a Yash Raj Films production. Ranbir Kapoor had already gotten what 99.9% of aspiring actors in tinsel town never do.
The opening credits sequence began, and it was the perfect trailer for the two-and-a-half hours to follow. This was a Ranbir Kapoor fest. A star vehicle, in other industries, is generally either a way to cash in on an established star’s popularity by specifically showcasing their talents, or a vanity project generally produced by the stars themselves (implying that they’ve earned the resources needed to do so). Simply based on the fact that he was appearing in offbeat films, he was hailed as a supremely talented actor, despite providing no evidence of this, except the fact that he wasn’t as bad as his abysmal competitors. Flops never weighed him down, and merely by constantly calling him a superstar in the same league as stars 15-20 years his senior, he was turned into one. Only after being in the industry for half a decade did he begin to give the odd glimpse of some acting ability. Be it layperson or experienced critic, no one seems to be able to see through the glossy veneer of his stardom and realise that based on talent alone, he would be lucky to get speaking roles in more meritocratic film industries. Within a decade of being in the industry, he’s earned enough to produce his own films, and even offer to compensate distributors out of his own pocket should his latest release fail.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of Bollywood propaganda.

Munna Micheal saw a big drop on Monday of over 50% as the film grossed 3-3.25 crore nett range. The film had some hope after Sunday but like Jagga Jasoos the week earlier it just managed to collect well on the day that its target audience comes out in numbers. For Jagga Jasoos it was the Saturday and for Munna Micheal it was the Sunday.
The film is heading for a first week collection of 31-32 crore nett and with a huge flow of releases over the next few weeks it is impossible to do much business of the film after seven days. The first weekend collections of Munna Micheal are as follows

Tubelight will not reach 115 crore nett business as collections have faded so badly since the first week. The film stands at 114.56 crore nett and will add just 1-2 lakhs more. It has just about edged past Badrinath Ki Dulhania to be third highest grosser of 2017 after Bahubali – The Conclusion and Raees.
In 2014 another Salman Khan under performer Jai Ho managed to get 1.44 crore footfalls but here the figure is looking to be just 1.15 crore so in real terms is far below Jai Ho. The footfalls of Tubelight are actually less than Badrinath Ki Dulhania also. The weekly collections of Tubelight till date are as follows.
Week One – 1,02,57,00,000
Week Two – 11,36,00,00,000
Week Three – 58,50,000
Week Four – 5,00,000
TOTAL – 1,14,56,50,000
The industry was doing pretty well until Tubelight and is on a horrible run since Tubelight and is in desperate need of a HIT. All film released post Tubelight have also flopped barring a Lipstick Under A Burkha but that hardly has footfalls to be jubilant. The problem with these films is not just flopping but the openings are a bit of a disaster as well.

Well better to be economically sound like Lipstick Under A Burkha than have huge losses. Big openings don’t guarantee success. Just like cricket a big opening partnership just gives a platform – you still need to bat well the rest of innings.

Not sure if Bond franchise is ready for another reboot so soon. With Craig coming in, Casino Royale was a kind of reboot of the franchise and Bond 25 is likely to be last film of Craig as Bond (he is already tired of playing Bond by his own words). But if a new actor is likely to come in this, it may also be a good time to bring in Nolan to try out some new stuff. Sam Mendes did well with Skyfall, but was quite generic with Spectre.

But then Red Chillies also are right as they didn’t air that promo on TV. Nihalani was just pissed that TV channels picked that trailer from online and started playing on TV without anyone’s permission.

Since 70mm isn’t around today, IMAX is the new 70mm (at 65mm as that is the maximum there), my humble request to the IMAX cinema owners… GET REAL BIG SCREENS!!!
Remember when movie posters had the word 70mm written as big as the title of the film? The whole idea was to get you away from the small screen of the TV in your living room, and experience a spectacle on silver screen as huge as a medium-sized building. Hence, the term larger-than-life is something that one doesn’t associate with TV, internet and, honestly, multiplexes too. But it’s true, bigger the screen, the further the distance of the projector. And when you have five to 10 cinemas cramped on one or two floors of a shopping mall, how can you have a larger than life screen? So, to compensate, they have a fake big screen called IMAX.
The truth is, only a handful of single-screen cinemas have 70mm screens, but, and this is the main but, movies HAVE to be shot on 70mm or blown up from the conventional 35mm widescreen, AND you need a 70mm projector (which is rare). The Chinese Mann Theatre in LA, Empire in London, Maratha Mandir and New Excelsior in Mumbai, Maheswari in Hyderabad, are all true 70mm cinemas. With THE biggest screens ever (bigger than 90 per cent of IMAX screens). All movies (non 70mm) are blown up to fill those screens and the result is truly larger-than-life.Whereas IMAX screens are bigger than the ones in multiplexes, but they can’t match the size of the 70mm screens.
Recently, I saw Spiderman: Homecoming in an IMAX cinema, and quite honestly, I had to move down to the third row from the screen to get a big-screen experience! Whereas, when I saw Baahubali in New Excelsior from a back-row seat, my neck was aching from enjoying the huge screen! IMAX isn’t cinema, it’s a gimmick… like 4D, where you exit looking like you’ve exited Churchgate station ka train at rush hour. Can you go for a big rock show on the third floor of a shopping mall? Or will you enjoy it more in an open ground?
True, IMAX can rival 70mm, but for that the screen and cinema, the size has to be that of an entire building. Just like these few heritage 70mm single screens. Comfort and luxury are very important to watch movies, but not at the cost of a true viewing experience. Today 65 and 75-inch TV sets aren’t very expensive, but you can’t call them a big-screen experience… unless you are a midget!

Karan Johar’s upcoming co-production Raazi is being directed by Meghna Gulzar and stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. It is the story about a Kashmiri girl played by Alia, who marries a Pakistani officer played by Vicky, to spy for the Indian Intelligence.
Meghna, who has earlier made films like Filhaal and Talvar, is the daughter of celebrated writer Gulzar and veteran actress Raakhee.
For Raazi, which narrates the story of a Kashmiri girl married to a Pakistani Army officer, she has cast actors Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.

most importantly he was iconic for a much older generation of viewers. That generation doesn’t exist anymore. Nor is this the age where you can pull off this sort of thing. Selling him as ‘the guy who wrote the kabhi kabhie song’ isn’t good enough. What Bhansali has in mind probably is a grand period setting in Bombay. The film industry and so on. It’s a love story more or less. Bhansali is probably doing his own version of Pyaasa here. But it’s nonetheless extremely hard to pull off.

There’s an interesting period of his life in the 40s. I don’t know if any of this will be represented. He was a communist and said controversial things in this period. Lived in Lahore through Partition, then moved to Delhi later. In any case knowing Bhansali the film is unlikely to get into his politics. Of course lotsa luck with that anyway in this India!

Yes, it’s highly unlikely that Bhansali is interested in Sahir as far as ideology or anything is concerned, he wants the Sahir-Amrita Pritam love story (and absent some kind of costumed/period splendor, love just isn’t REAL for SLB :-)), i.e. he wants a pose, and nothing more. Now, Abhishek is indeed a good actor, the right actor, to add dimension and depth to the sort of paper-thin characterization that serves as SLB’s hallmark, but that doesn’t mean the film is salvageable. I don’t think he should do the film, and I imagine it’s going to be terrible.
SLB, after pillaging Mughal-e-Azam for Bajirao Mastani, now seems to want to own Guru Dutt-terrain too.

This has disaster written all over it. I’m not sure if Abhishek can correct his career in the slightest and a potentially risky high budget venture (purely based on Bhansali’s sensibility) won’t help at all. He’s asking for trouble.

The safest but most not interesting project would be Dostana 2. He should do something where box office won’t be a big concern like that. Bhansali is not a go to director / producer for resurrection. He took Salman, SRK and Hrithik in good career positions. Ramleela had Deepika on a great run. Unfortunately I doubt Abhishek is in a great position to decline. He’ll probably have to say yes.

They have had their share of issues in finding a star cast. Abhishek may be a good choice, but I am not sure if Priyanka Chopra will actually sign this given the niche subject. This is not going to be BO friendly anyways, with or without stars. Should be made in a controlled budget and given v limited multiplex release, which becomes more difficult with stars in it.
Surprised that Irfan Khan is not doing this, it is right up in his alley.

Main part of his discussion missing is that Bhansali is NOT directing this movie and just producing and it is being directed by new director Jasmeet Reen who has written the script as well. So, its not going to be an event film or something.
Irrfan would have been better choice but looks like he hasn’t been approached recently. But Abhishek is also fine if its planned as a small budgeted movie with expected lifetime gross is 25 crores.

Irrfan had reportedly put this down at some point in the past. I guess it was scheduling issue, otherwise dont see any reason for him not being interested.
There were talks about Priyanka co-producing it with Bhansali, but seems like that too has not worked out.
I think Irrfan and Priyanka would have made an interesting cast here. But good project for Abhishek to pickup.

It’s highly unlikely that Bhansali would leave a film of this kind just to a debutante director. The subject itself is something only Bhansali would be interested in. He’ll be calling the shots in more ways than one here. On the rest if you’ve been following the media reports on this film over time they’ve been calling it a Bhansali venture and have been giving it that kind of coverage. Smaller film or not it’s unlikely one could sneak this one by. It will get enough attention.

As I said, Bhansali never went back to Irrfan and there is no date issues and just approached Abhishek. Below is Irrfan’s statement.
Talking about the rumours and his involvement, Irrfan said in a statement: “I’m not sure where these rumours are coming from. I was approached for the film almost two years back, but since then there’s been no conversation on dates, so how does the question of me not having time or walking out of the film even come from?”
“I think that’s a mystery I would first like to solve that who are these well-wishers who are speaking my mind without me even being aware.”

The Abhishek rumors were there earlier too, I’d posted some of these links. SRK was also talked about. But yeah Irrfan seemed to be in for a while. Also, don’t just believe what you read in the media. In any case I certainly hope this latest story is incorrect!

The Chennai Box-Office is back to normal, after the recent price hike. Things have now settled down as Tamil content has finally hit the bull’s eye at the CBO. The moral of the story is – if content is good, the audiences will come to the theatres.
This week’s big winner at CBO is Madhavan – Vijay Sethupathi action packed cat and mouse thriller Vikram Vedha, which has netted (minus GST) around Rs 1.30 Cr. The film is being liked and has taken a very good opening.
At number two is Hip Hop Tamizha’s debut film as hero Messaya Murukku, which too has taken a good opening in smaller screens and is in the number two position. At number three is the Hollywood war drama Dunkirk.
And at number four is the new Telugu hit Fidaa, which has taken a good opening and is being liked by all. SpiderMan Homecoming continues to hang around at number five.

It’s a couple of things. The injuries along with having a family have impacted Djokovic like it did Federer. I’m unclear whether Nadal has children though. It’s a shame on Djokovic.

A. Not really collections fell on Monday to 50% of day one. It will be a decent runner buts about all and has not really been appreciated.
Q. What was the total budget of Tubelight?.
A. Budget 62 crore plus PA at 21 crore. Salman Khan remuneration as actor is satellite which is 50-55 crore crore. So budget mid range is 135 crore.
Q. Is Salman Khan still the biggest star even after Tubelight considering Dangal with Aamir Khan has 1875 crore worldwide?
A. Worldwide it would be Aamir Khan now as long as a China release is guaranteed but in India Salman Khan is still ahead as Aamir Khan does not have many films. For the tables to turn either Aamir Khan has to up the volume and these films have to work or Salman Khan releases have to under perform.
