  1. Saw another longish trailer during the innings break – some more dialogues and a song included. The trailers are pretty flat. TEPK trailer was far more interesting than these.

  6. I cannot help but laugh at SRK at this age trying so hard to deliver a successful romance. Still lost in the time warp around DDLJ, despite trying his luck in the Dons and Raees (Don 3 seems to be in the works too). From playing a teenager in DDLJ to now a guy with mid-life crisis in JHMS (going by the teaser), he is still stuck in the romantic genre.

Salman and Aamir also started their career with romances – MPK and QSQT respectively. But look at what they are doing now. QSQT easily remains my fav romantic film of all time in Hindi cinema above MPK or DDLJ. A book was released last year on QSQT and how it was a game-changer for the industry in the 80s. Of course, QSQT is not referred as much as DDLJ and the writer brings out the reason v well in this interview:

    +++++++++++++++

“Besides being one of the most important films in the last three decades, QSQT also remains a milestone in Hindi cinema and yet at the same time, it is not a film that is instantly recalled.

Many a times films are forgotten for a host of reasons. But the reason why QSQT is not as readily recalled as another genre-defining film like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) is perhaps the kind of work the people associated with the film went on to do. If you think of Mansoor Khan, you immediately recall Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Aamir Khan brings to mind everything right from Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin, Rangeela, Sarfarosh, 1947- Earth and Lagaan to Dil Chahta Hai. But [with] Shah Rukh Khan, everything pivots around a DDLJ and when juxtaposed with the level of commercial success DDLJ enjoyed, it was never pushed back.

The fact that QSQT gave Hindi cinema the second most popular template for the hero after the Angry Young Man — the chocolate boy next door — is testimony enough to its contribution. The film practically redefined the way the hero operated in popular Hindi cinema.

Surprisingly, barring Fanaa to a certain extent – Aamir has shyed away from a full-on romantic film – Ghajini had a lover-boy but it became a revenge saga – i thought he should do a full-on romantic film with Sridevi where both plays their age….

      • Maybe with Juhi Chawla instead? Was a big fan of that onscreen couple.

Problem is that Aamir has matured too much to feature in just a romantic film. He is choosing all different genres but usually have a tinge of romantic subplot embedded in it somewhere.

A full-on romance at this stage is very doubtful imo.

yeah but a middle-age marrief life kind of romance would suit him and sri – as both have retained their physique – Juhi is an aunty-type already 🙂 Sri and Aamir have understood the cinema to T and both know the imp. of physical aspect and screen persona – i would love to c them together

Juhi-Aamir formed a cute pair and some of their films did v well at BO (QSQT, HHRPK and Ishq). I had even watched their flop (Daulat Ki Jung, Love Love Love, Atank Hi Atank, Tum Mere Ho). LOL

    • “But without a meaty trailer it’s tough to figure anything out.”

Why you want to figure out anything from the trailers? Isn’t the movie title and mini trailers not enough to know about the movie. I think many folks are commenting on theatrical and how less views these mini trailers are going. Let me clarify.

Srk released Raees trailer launch and it was the highest watched promo with over 20 million in a day. It is very easy to get huge views if you release a project it as huge launch. If they had done it with JHMS also, it would have done at least 15 million now. That would have been more than enough for the buzz but there is a glitch. They want the team to discover the characters slowly and its not in your face kind of movie with lot of twist and turns.

It is very clever marketing move IMO. Reason? Remember Dear Zindagi. When they cut the theatrical trailer, Srk didn’t like any and he said, you are ruining the movie by giving away everything. He had devised the plan of 4 mini trailers and called them Take 1, Take 2.. etc. That was it and then songs.. and it worked brilliantly for the movie. Especially folks watching it during 1st weekend without major reading reviews, it was very interesting to watch things unfold without realizing which character has how big of a role and even Srk’s character length was surprise. The low key promotion and without a theatrical really helped the keep the good cards and open during watching the movie. I can’t imagine a good theatrical for DZ showing Alia’s boyfriends and then moving on from one to another and then meeting Dr. Jehangir Khan and then the sessions. I’m so glad they didn’t cut the theatrical for that movie.

Similarly, I’m sure the theatrical trailer of JHMS also will be boring affair and with simple template of a journey and the movie is resting on small moments and I’m sure watching the story unfold on big screen directly would be more better than giving it out everything at this stage. It just depends on the movie and this is not like Raees kind of setup but movie with more personal moments in a romantic setup.

  11. The promotions have been low-key until here. Since the last few weeks, Toilet suddenly seems the film with better prospects.

Months earlier, when the clash was announced most here (including me) felt that the SRK film will crush TEPK in the initial week-end while the latter will struggle to make it to 80-90cr. But Naveen was right over the fact the Govt machinery will back TEPK and it may have a big impact at the BO. PM Modi is demanding that the film runs tax free. Expect it to have a huge impact on the net collections. I remember Naveen getting ridiculed here for his claims that the Govt campaign will help the film!

Now, now not only JHMS has backed away from the clash, but its promotions aren’t creating half the impact as that created by TEPK. SRK and the music may ensure some initial but I have doubts now on whether it can go beyond Raees’ collections. Remarkable turn of events.

    Like

    • They have already aired one song ‘Radha’ or something of that sort during CT final. The song was strictly average. I dont think the music is going to be any great shakes. Whatever initial it draws will be based on SRK’s pull in this genre.

Once GST kicks in, Gross collections are expected to be reported instead of Nett. So TEPK getting tax exemption is not going to help much (unless we go by footfalls). The buzz is higher for TEPK in India than JHMS, but WW JHMS will still be the winner due to its overseas numbers.

Akshay’s WW gross are usually in 200-250 cr range. SRK’s highest WW grossers are in the 390-395 cr range (CE, Dilwale). JHMS can be expected to be in that range too.

From the teasers it looks like a multiplex friendly movie. Isnt the full trailer supposed to come with Tubelight?

      Like

      • There is no clash now so comparing with TEPK is pointless. And whatever be the buzz, I am ready to bet on which movie will take a bigger oprning in India….

        Like

        • You dont need a same day release to be the only possible clash. Two movies releasing one after also affects each other (although to a less extent). Its natural that collections of both will be compared against each other.

Specially with SRK currently on a slow meltdown phase and Akshay continuously progressing forward, it will be interesting to see how these two films stack against each other both critically and commercially. Or more importantly which one gets better audience acceptance.

The less the buzz, the better. I think this will do far better than Tamasha. This film seems to be more fun and crowd pleasing.

    Like

    • Tamasha had an average run at BO. It was not really a happy romcom. This one seems to be more inline with JWM. JWM was extremely liked back in 2007. If it had SRK in it instead of Shahid, it would have been much closer to the highest grosser of that year with maybe 70-75 cr. That would be close to 300 cr in today’s money imo. This should be the benchmark. If Imtiaz delivers a film as crowd pleasing and accepted as JMW, then JHMS should do 300 cr. A good to decent movie here can easily pull up 200 cr. If not accepted, then it may end in 125-150 cr range like Raees or Dilwale.

Its coincidental that both SRK and Aamir’s upcoming films this year (JHMS and SS) will be looking at 2007’s films as a reference points (JWM and TZP) while bench-marking their successes. The genres are quite the same – JWM and JHMS being light romcoms; TZP and SS being children films with Aamir in supporting role (as mentor).

What’s common between Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi (2016), Maneesh Sharma’s Fan (2016) and Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, apart from the fact that Shah Rukh Khan starred in them? In all the films, the superstar worked with the respective directors for the first time in his career. Interestingly, the same holds true for his upcoming films too — Imtiaz Ali-directed Jab Harry Met Sejal and Aanand L Rai’s untitled next.

Ask SRK about working with Imtiaz, and he says, “Main ek bahut badi baat bolne wala hoon (I am going to say a very big thing). [Till now], I have worked with some really nice directors but I can say that Imtiaz is like a modern-day Yash Chopra. I don’t think apart from Adi (Aditya Chopra) and Karan (Johar), who have learnt hands-on from Yashji, anyone else gets the same vibe (as Chopra’s films).”

Shah Rukh adds that he’s “doing a romantic film after a long time.” “In that sense, you can call it a pure love story,” says the actor. So, what makes Imtiaz stand out? “Be it his writing or the way he gets [the essence of] man-woman relationship in a very sweet manner, along with having a modern take on it, it’s very beautiful,” he says.

The Chennai Express (2013) actor says, sometimes, Imtiaz’s (films) can be “edgy also”. “But Jab Harry Met Sejal (JHMS) is not edgy (smiles); this one is funny and happy. Also, Imtiaz believes in songs, and so you will see the girl and boy breaking into a song in the streets. But he prefers more of [other cities in] Europe than just Switzerland (Chopra’s favourite shooting location). He has a lot of Yashji kind of qualities,” says Shah Rukh.

Adding that Imtiaz is also a “very nice writer and an equally good human being”, SRK adds that it was “great fun working with him”. “I wish I could do a film with Imtiaz every year in the genre that he wants because it’s very easy working with him. He also loves his actors the way Yashji would. Also, he is very gentle and kind, so it was great fun to team up with him,” he says.

Also, by now, it is well known that Shah Rukh has averted a clash with Akshay Kumar’s next film by moving JHMS’s release date to August 4. Does he think such avoidance of clashes is great for films? “Absolutely. Honestly speaking, for our film, we will have a great weekend with the Raksha Bandhan holiday. And, as I have already said, since JHMS is in the space of a long-running film, we will go into the holiday mood in the subsequent week too. But the other film will also get a free run,” says Shah Rukh. In fact, the superstar admits that it will help him talk more about his film “rather than competition, clashes, etc.”

Not a great endorsement. A certain site is confused now; support the talisman of DCH trope of cinema like they did for Excel Entertainment for Raees (as a conjecture in that production houses move away from their staple films) or succumb to the usual rhetoric that SRK saves the day!!!!! Imtiaz Ali is everything that DCH represents – just less! Musically he’s got great taste, dialogues are good but his film’s tend to miss the ‘completeness’ mark. This market strategy needs a proper trailer. Bits and bops is kind of his path. The sum of parts never quite gets to the sum!

    Like

    • That’s true for many films though. It’s tautological to say this. A star is added to raise the gross one way or the other based on the initial. Many films wouldn’t do half as much without the stars. Even blockbusters wouldn’t do as much. Take out Salman from his films, add Akshay, the films probably do a third or at the most 40% of what they did. Even with a fading Tom Cruise and even though it’s a total flop the latest Mummy wouldn’t do half of what it did without him!

The third trailer has however built up a mystery on why the ring is so important. The mini trail clearly indicates the ring to be a vital part of the plot. With all the anticipation, all we can do is wait until we find more clues that would help unravel the mystery. The mini trails are winning hearts all over and have churned the level of excitement all the more!

The film revolves around Sejal’s trip along with tour guide Harry. The story revolves around Harry & Sejal’s journey across Europe. A search for Sejal’s engagement ring makes Harry understand love & relationships better. Sejal experiences new found freedom, security & solace in Harry’s company. And in between all of this… there is love, life, lies. thrill, fantasy and the voice within.Apart from the Gujju-Punju mix up, we are sure we’ll see much more exciting stuff in this film.

Shot in exotic locales such as Budapest, Amsterdam and Prague, this is the first collaboration between Imtiaz and Shah Rukh. The director is known for offbeat films such as Tamasha, Rockstar and Highway. Jab Harry Met Sejal is all set to release on 4th August 2017.

No the infamously famous pro SRK Indicine site said this in Q&A.

        Q. Which upcoming films for the remainder of 2017 can have a better opening day than Tubelight?
        A. The best bet would be ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, which is certain to cross 20 crore on Day 1. ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ has a chance, but from the promos that we’ve seen so far, neither are the reports positive nor are the chances of a 20 crore plus opening very high.

        Q. Do you think makers of Jab Harry met Sejal makers did a good job by preponing the film by one week? Will it has a chance to cross 25cr on 1st day?Can JHMS cross 200cr in india considering the fact that now it has a one open week & full of holidays 2nd week?
        A. Decision to move ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ could prove to be a good one, because the film has one open week at the box office. But from Shah Rukh Khan’s point-of-view, it has sent out a very wrong message. The very fact that he was willing to give up on a holiday release to avert a clash, put his 2018 Christmas date at risk. A big film might / will sense this weakness and announce their film for Christmas, expecting Shah Rukh to move. As for 25 crore Day 1 and 200 crore lifetime, we do not want to sound overly negative, but the idea to release mini trailers hasn’t worked. It’s looking like a very niche ‘high society / urban’ film and from the survey we did this weekend, less than 15% of the family audience said they would be wanting to watch it in theatres. They need to put out a good trailer and the music album has to click.

        Q. How is the response to jab harry met Sejal mini trails n the first song ? Will it be able to pull off opening of 25 crore ?
        A. From the survey we did at theatres, at the ground level, the response isn’t positive. It needs a very good trailer to get anywhere close to 25 crore.

        Q. What do You think srk was Thinking while signing “Jab Harry Met Sejal”? I mean, he is in his so-called “bad-phase” and he choose an off-beat film with that type of director, while he needed a pan-india film (probably we will have to wait till Anand L Rai film for that to happen). And what are your expectations from it?
About Jab Harry Met Sejal. Honestly, we aren’t convinced. It’s too niche for a Shah Rukh Khan film. The second promo, Indemnity Bond with sexual clauses, has received a horrendous response on the ground. The third promo has been liked better, but you expect more out of a SRK film – he has audience in smaller centres too, but they may not even understand this sort of a film. We’ll have to wait and see if they put out a good trailer. So far, the campaign itself hasn’t worked. The ‘mini trailer’ thing doesn’t work. It didn’t work both for Dear Zindagi or Meri Pyaari Bindu. It’s unfortunate, but Shah Rukh’s choice of films isn’t doing justice to his huge stardom and fan-following that reaches every nook and corner of the country. Let’s hope the trailer is better.

(The mini trailers are meh without any context. Most people are use to seeing dialogue promos after main trailer introduces film, then a few song trailers. You get a little context. Here it’s a confused montage of scenes. It’s all light and with no indication of flow.

Despite this it’s a strong genre for SRK – it’ll shock if opening is not strong. Wouldnt expect Raees type opening as that through previews looked a spicy and exciting role. I’m sure BOI will fist pump and Fan, Raees show SRK’s opening is intact. Don’t agree with all answers just aspects around the response to mini trailers and how strategy is not convincing at all till now. A good theatrical can change everything. It’s a ‘so far’ hasn’t worked statement and kind of reeks of trying to be different but not pulling it off.)

        • Going by Bollyarena and Indicine responses to the mini trails, it seems they are only working for SRK fans at this point. I think a good theatrical trailer can generate some interest from the general audience. A couple of good songs will help too.

    • I guess the idea of these mini trails is to be different and not to give the story away, I guess to counter that long standing criticism that trailers give the story away before even watching. However these mini trails are simply dialogue, though (and I guess I’m alone in saying this) I’ve liked them (i find number 3 to be really good and the rest meh) they aren’t informative. How do you expect cinemagoers to part with their money on a film they haven’t got a clue about? I’m sure SRK and co must be getting this feedback so just release the trailer and make the rest of the mini trails dialogue promos! The one criticism I have of SRK is that he innovates for the sake of innovation even when his base isn’t sturdy. A nice 3 min trailer would have been enough, it’s SRK in a romcom, that’s all the promotion you need for a man dubbed the king of romance! (Loving Anushkas sincere attempt at a guji accent too)

The issue is its going as per plan and suddenly folks and some sites will think coz of bad feedback articles they have upped the promotion and released the theatrical. Folks have started writing obituaries for the movie without understanding there is more than a month for the movie’s release and the promotion started under 2 week backs. They are under 1/3 of their marketing journey.

Well fact is it needed pushing forward and proof is always in pudding. Some folks will defend even when it’s clear something hasn’t worked and if your strategy doesn’t work you make tactical adjustments to make do. No one’s really writing obituaries for the film it is obituaries for the marketing strategy.

If they thought it’s working won’t they have released 10 days before release as you’ve posted above. Just another example of you defending SRK. Your own defense of the strategy has blown up in your face and you’re shifting blame onto public or sites. LOL!

      • All this won’t matter.. if movie has good WOM, it will do well and if not, you need more promotion to get that 1st weekend business. Either way, it can only add so much to the expected gross.

That 10 days was my guess.. this is also unconfirmed news abt Jagga Jasoos and then 3rd song in last week of July. All I knew was 3 songs and theatrical, so theatrical can come before 3rd song or vice versa. Week here or there, wouldn’t matter much unless its this week.

    • There is no doubt that the feedback is not very good. The teasers havent worked. But its also true that if content is good it wont have an issue doing big. The opening could have been between 25 and 30 crs with good feedback and SRK in it… Now it looks below 20 crs to me….

      Like

      • The release window demands a strong opening for this film. It will have to fight TEPK in week 2. Less than 20 cr opening day will make it difficult to get to a big gross (200 cr and above).

        • If the content is good, it will do 200 crs +, doesn’t matter how good TEPK is…If Bajirao Mastani can do 185 crs in a clash, then with good content, there is no reason why a SRK movie cant do 250 crs with no clash in first week…Since this is a multiplex movie, i will say , if content is as good as YJHD, then it can 250 crs plus 100%…

          Like

        • I said this before – If JHMS is as good as JWM, it will do 300 cr. Similarly if SS turns out to be as good as TZP, it will do 250 cr in today’s money. Its up to Imtiaz and Aamir to deliver the goodies.

        • jayshah Says:

Gutsy predictions all-round. JHMS considering Imtiaz Ali’s history at box office – 120 CR + is great. If he’s changed his style / tone to reflect a more YRF/KJO/FARAH presentation than can go bigger.

SS I doubt anything above 100 CR – if it does than we know who is responsible and that I’d imagine is more than enough for a film this size.

          Like

        • @Jay – Agree that 120-150 cr is the likely range for both JHMS and SS. That should be enough for a Hit tag for JHMS and Superhit tag for SS. Its not everyday that we get movies like JWM and TZP. I was just talking about the best case scenario.

          Like

        • If content is good then it means Imtiaz has been able to cater to larger multiplex audience. So should not be an issue.
SS I think the max it can do is 100 crs..To think of that movie doing 250 crs in a clash with Golmaal specially when Aamir is in supporting role is a bit too much

        • jayshah Says:

Content IMHO is better in Tamasha than YJHD. But audiences simply can’t digest former and the latter is crowd pleasing, mushy mushy that leaves you happy.

        • TZP also had Aamir in a supporting role and clashed with Welcome on Christmas 2007. It ended up with 62.5 cr while Welcome was one of the biggest blockbusters of the year with 70 cr.

A children’s film with good content can do really well with family audience. Of course the business will be multiplex and higher-end single screens oriented (like TZP). A multiplex blockbuster can easily do 250 cr in today’s money. It applies both for JHMS and SS.

If you compare with JWM and TZP, they did 4.5 times and 6 times the business of their first weekend respectively. Thats exceptional trending (more so for TZP). If JHMS and SS are liked and accepted to that extent then 300 cr and 250 cr are not that big a deal.

But here it looks like an uncle grooving to 70’s track and niece grooving to 00’s track. Undeniably the pairing isn’t odd as we’ve seen it in RNBDJ (where it literally was an uncle bringing a bride home) & JTHJ so audience won’t be too shocked as they’ve seen it before. 44. Jab Harry Met Sejal: We don’t mind seeing 51-year-old Shah Rukh Khan play a lover boy. Here is why

Jab Harry Met Sejal: It’s not about Shah Rukh Khan not repeating his old antics that has made us sit and take notice. It is his new ‘romantic’ energy and tone in Jab Harry Met Sejal co-starring Anushka Sharma that has piqued our curiosity.

    1. Shah Rukh Khan is finally given a curious ‘character’
So, yeah. He is no longer your ideal romantic, charming good boy whose only job is to woo his heroines. Here he is self-confessed cheap and warns Anushka that she should stay away from him as he is a womaniser. Thank Imtiaz Ali for giving layers and nuances to Shah Rukh’s character. SRK deserves meatier roles.

    2. Shah Rukh is not looking any younger here but….
An actor can easily hide his age under the garb of his acting talent. You notice a few wrinkles on his face. His face also looks a bit tired. But have you noticed that how SRK is able to match young Anushka’s energy? Their banter and constant sparring don’t let you notice SRK’S age. In fact, Shah Rukh is looking sexier than ever.

    3. Shah Rukh Khan has got a new tone
Let’s just accept that sometimes we just don’t want to see an actor’s swag. Shah Rukh is seen here speaking both Punjabi and Gujarati with an ease and finesse. There is an undertone of raw energy and sparkling earthiness to his personality. He is perhaps after a long time, not playing the superstar Shah Rukh Khan on screen. You can instantly relate to his cranky mannerisms.

    4. Shah Rukh Khan is romancing a young actress but…
Surprisingly, Anushka Sharma’s character here is that of a modern woman with a certain goofiness to her personality. She is playing a perfect damsel in distress. We see SRK reacting to Anushka’s inanity with more of his own. Their chemistry is sparkling. Both Shah Rukh and Anushka have finally managed to crack the curious case of on-screen chemistry here which has been clearly absent in movies in recent times.

    5. Shah Rukh Khan is working with Imtiaz Ali and that means…
Imtiaz Ali has always been able to extract something new from his actors. We saw Ranbir Kapoor unravelling his grim side in Rockstar. In these times, if someone has the magic wand to sprinkle some novelty in romantic tales, it is Imtiaz Ali. Has he managed to extract something new from Shah Rukh Khan in Jab Harry Met Sejal too? We will get to know soon.

  50. REVEALED: Imtiaz Ali describes Shah Rukh Khan’s role in Jab Harry Met Sejal

It is the first time where we will see an amalgamation of 90s romance and new age romance with the collaboration of King of Romance Shah Rukh Khan and director of Gen Y love stories, Imtiaz Ali. The two will be coming together for the film titled Jab Harry Met Sejal and according to Imtiaz, it can be called as the love story of a guide.

Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of a tour guide for the first time. The recent spree of mini trailers of the film revealed that the actor as a guide who helps Sejal aka Anushka Sharma find her engagement ring that she seems to have lost. Coming to Shah Rukh’s character which is that of Harinder Singh Mehra aka Harry, Imtiaz described it to be a contrast of sorts wherein their profession is quite ironically different from their personal life.

In Imtiaz’s words, guides are the ones who take tourists to their desired destinations but oddly, when it comes to what they are trying to seek in their own lives, they are quite unaware of what they want. Citing an example of how guides often look at other side whilst the tourists are enjoying a particular spot, Imtiaz spoke about how they seem disinterested in the place since they are bored of visiting it frequently and how they don’t see beauty in things that the others find beautiful.

This kind of paradoxical quality was what Imtiaz was seeking from Shah Rukh Khan’s character, calling it a certain kind of ‘dramatic cynicism’ and this is exactly how he wanted to portray Harry in the film.

In fact, comparing the role of Harry the guide to various roles played by other actors like Aamir Khan in Fanaa or Dev Anand in Guide, Imtiaz believes that there is much more resemblance to the latter.

As for the film, Jab Harry Met Sejal is produced under the banner Red Chillies Entertainment and it is slated to release on August 4.

      • Yes Udit will do great but then it would look like a song from 90’s too. Personally not a big fan of music like JHMS coz they are going “Gen Next” with every track of the movie. Like Radha song is good in its own space but it is set completely in modern setting. Beech Beech Main is good as a club song but probably the song needed to be instant connectivity of ‘Its the time to Disco’ but then if they would have done that it would look so passe. Similarly this Butterfly song is reminiscent of Nagada Nagada or Mauja hi Mauja from JWM but if they would have done similar song it would look so old fashioned.

So, Pritam has gone little experimental with all of his songs here and maybe it is the demand of the tone of the movie or setting given by Imtiaz Ali, one can only know after the movie releases. Giving instant item songs is easy for Pritam but he has not done it here like he does usual. For now songs are fine but it are not massy enough like JWM, so it all depends on the movie. If the movie is very good then songs will turn out to be huge hit musically after the release but these kind of songs won’t do TOO well before the release IMO.

The tune is the most important thing all the background is part of pre-loaded synthesizers and can be added to any song. That can match often but if copied, it needs to be the main tune with wording “Afsana Tera Mera… Beech Beech main”.

I know Pritam can still copy but I believe musically inclined directors like Karan Johar and Imtiaz Ali sit months on the music to create something with Pritam. If it was something like Billu where director don’t care, he will copy from somewhere and give instant item songs like Hit Hit Soniye.. etc(not sure if Hit Hit is copied, just an example).

  67. Jab Harry Met Sejal gets ‘UA’ with no cuts; so what happened to the intercourse?
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Jul 22, 2017 – 10:15 am IST

After all the hue and cry over the trailers where ‘Sejal’ Anushka Sharma was seen haggling over the terms and conditions of ‘intercourse’ with ‘Harry’ Shah Rukh Khan, the film Jab Harry Met Sejal directed by Imtiaz Ali, finally went through the Censor Board on Thursday afternoon. To everyone’s surprise the film has come out unscathed.

Says a source clued in to the development, “The CBFC viewed Jab Harry Met Sejal and certified the film ‘UA’ without a single verbal or visual cut.”

This puts a very curious question mark on the entire debate that raged over the use of the word ‘intercourse’ in the trailer. Are there different yardsticks for judging a dialogue in the trailer and the same dialogue when placed in the feature film?

    Like

    • Subhash K Jha after being in the industry for 40 years is so dumb to write this article. UA and A are different ratings and movies and TV are different mediums.

“Pahlaj Nihalani told “We have had no problem with the word (intercourse) being used for the digital trailers. But we cannot give an UA Certificate to the particular trailer with the word in it. To air the trailer on TV one needs a ‘U’ certificate, since even children watch it on TV. Will you be comfortable using the word in front of your children? The makers of the film have not come back to me, so I don’t know why the media is judging our work. We are only following the guidelines, we are doing our work.”

  68. Jab Harry Met Sejal trailer: Five reasons why this Shah Rukh Khan film is not another cringe-worthy romantic flick

Jab Harry Met Sejal trailer: If you haven’t noticed the vacuum of romance in Hindi films lately, probably you were too busy. That’s why Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma film is a relief amid a plethora of loud, tacky Bollywood romantic films. Here are five reasons why the film is not another regular romance.

    1. Shah Rukh Khan’s nonlinear character
Don’t whine about a 51-year-old Shah Rukh Khan playing a lover boy. Of late, the guy hasn’t been given layered, nuanced romantic characters to play on-screen. If you’re already bored with seeing Shah Rukh playing a sugar-coated, good guy who woos the leading lady and does his signature open arms move, blame the directors and makers. Don’t blame it on Shah Rukh Khan. But maybe, Jab Harry Met Sejal has finally given SRK a nonlinear character where the actor can show off his other acting tricks. We saw the glimpse in the trailer. As an actor, Shah Rukh displayed a range of expressions in this trailer – probably more than what he displayed in movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai together.

    2. Shah Rukh-Anushka Sharma’s chemistry
If Jab Harry Met Sejal trailer feels new, it’s probably because of the sparkling chemistry between the films’ lead actors – Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma. Whether it’s about their incessant bickering or a deep, steady gaze into each other’s eyes, Shah Rukh and Anushka manage to hold our attention. It also helps that Anushka plays this goofy yet classic woman with a certain finesse.

    3. A perfect millennial concoction
Like any other Imtiaz Ali film, Jab Harry Met Sejal caters to millennials. The film seems to be as clueless about romance and love as you and me. When did we become so practical? Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma seem to be playing two selfish and practical people. Anushka is only interested in finding her engagement ring, while Shah Rukh just wants to avoid the whole trouble. Both the characters also reflect a certain cynicism that probably shouldn’t shock you. There is a dialogue where Shah Rukh Khan says, “Sejal, don’t look back” harking back to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. But Anushka’s smart, humorous reply confirms why this is not a regular romance.

    4. Film’s modern, urban feel
Jab Harry Met Sejal is eventually going to be a love story. But it’s treatment and style raises our curiosity. The film’s whole texture feels new and peppy. There is an undertone of modernity in film’s language.

    5. Because it’s philosophical
No matter however modern we are, we all seek love. The trailer’s efficacy lies in its ability to make matters of heart feel more urgent. The last few minutes of the trailer are interspersed with passionate moments shared by Shah Rukh and Anushka. The trailer seems to carry depth and soulfulness under its light-hearted affectations. The trailer also works as it invites you to get lost in its labyrinth of a romantic tale.

    • Like the point # 1 here. Imtiaz Ali’s characters are more deep than usual sugar coated love stories and SRK has said the character is not of a youngster but of a person who has seen enough life but didn’t settled own. I think it can turn out better than usual romantic movies.

  69. Munna Micheal First Day Business
    Saturday 22 July 2017 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Munna Micheal had a low first day as it grossed around 6.50-6.75 crore nett apprx and these collections were mainly helped by some mass centres recording average collections and that too single screens in these places. The film was a wide release and these collections for such a big release are poor. They are lower than last weeks Jagga Jasoos and other films this year like Kaabil and Half Girlfriend. The huge problem going forward are the poor collections in multiplexes it would be okay if it was metro multiplexes which were not collecting as that is not the target audience for the film but in the case of Munna Micheal its multiplexes across the nation which have not collected. The first day collections are a little better than A Flying Jatt which grossed 6.02 crore nett on its first day and it was a partial holiday.

The other release Lipstick Under The Burkha has had a fair first day as per its costs and if it grows today (Saturday) which it should. The film grossed a little under 1 crore nett on day one and has chances of a 4 crore nett plus weekend which is decent for a film which cost 6 crore to make and release. At some high ened metro multiplexes it had collections which were same as Munna Micheal.

The Hollywood film Dunkirk has done well with business of 3.50 crore nett apprx and is set for a good weeeknd. It is easily the best performing film in multiplexes and these collections have come from just the english version as the film has not been dubbed.

I do not agree when people say SRK hasnt come up with a worthwhile film in years. I liked CE when it came, and quite enjoyed The unique and different Fan. Dear Zindagi was a little gem too. Its just that the public seems to have lost interest. They find it hard to be interested in an upcoming SRK film.

The good thing SRK did about JHMS

1- Crushed his ego and avoided the clash

If JHMS and TEPK were released on same day i.e 11 aug the the narrative might heve been Deshdrohi SRK VS Deshbhakt Akshay. B/C of swach bharat story TEPK has whole Govt machinery behind him.(Centre and BJP ruled states)

2 – SRK film anyway get good weekend or week. So his films needs support in 2nd week. Here JHMS will get Rakshabandhan and 15 Aug advantage

3- SRK kept Expectation low. Buisness wise and Content wise. There is no statement that it is a great film or it will shake Box office.

4- SRK put many people off with aggressive and in your promotion. In JHMS case there is no over the top Promotion.

5- After CE no SRK film has a complete family entertainer feeling. Though JHMS is looking like a Urban film we should not forget the Urban audience make large chunk plus Tier 2 and Tier 3 city audinence too aspire for Urban looking film.

So lets see what JHMS do for SRK.

  73. Or is it that people are afraid to own up to being an SRK fan or liking a film of his? This drummed up ‘quality’ aura of an out and out manipulative Aamir brand of cinema is perhaps making them do so. No problem, this also will pass.

    Like

    • The ‘manipulative’ brand of Aamir is not much but a set of personal choices of films and association with talented directors/technicians. It has worked for 16 years now and seen through drummed up ‘great’ phases from SRK first and now Salman. It is unlikely to go anywhere unless Aamir hangs his boots. Else it will survive whatever comes after the current Salman mania subsides.

    • Let us get us “the enlightenment” on what constitutes “quality” & how SRK can first get to the level of “drummed up manipulative quality” & then “the REAL quality” as currently he has neither & not even in the vicinity to achieve the former, less said about reaching to the latter phase if he may ever!!

  74. Why the new ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ trailer is such a hit

After a series of mini trailers, the full trailer of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Jab Harry Met Sejal directed by Imtiaz Ali is finally out. The trailer gives a sneak peek into the lives and journey of the characters, Harry and Sejal. While the mini trailers were like appetisers, this one is a delicious main course.

    Jabardast jodi
You’d think that because this is the third time for SRK and Anushka, the chemistry would be dull. On the contrary, it’s just getting better. SRK and Anushka together are magnetic. She made her debut with Shah Rukh in 2008, and after Jab Tak Hain Jaan, this 2017 release is their third film together. And we can safely conclude that the jodi is becoming more jabardast. Be it the light moments or the intense ones, the two actors are in top form together.

    Their world, your world
Harry is a tour guide, who is lost in his personal life, while Sejal is a Gujarati girl hunting for her lost engagement ring. Both characters are seeking something. There is an instant connect with it because everyone is searching/looking for someone. It is relatable. Harry and Sejal’s world could easily be your world.

    Hansee toh phasee
SRK may be the king of romance, but comedy comes naturally to him. The star is known for his wit and one-liners, and Imtiaz has made good use of the actor’s comic timing. From comic scenes to self-deprecating humour, the trailer gives us a peak into Harry’s humourous side and the fans have given it a big thumbs up!

    Tease me, baby
Opposites attract and there is some fire between the Punjabi munda and Gujarati chokri that even they don’t want to admit. We love the flirty fun between them. Harry tries to convince Anushka that he looks at women with “Gandi nazar” while she offers to sign a “No intercourse” contract. The throwback to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, where SRK tells her to not turn back while leaving, is endearing. A real treat for SRK fans.

    The Imtiaz Ali touch
No one does urban romance better than Imtiaz. This film, too, has his fresh and quirky take on love and relationships. His characters are real and fun. Even their language is what real couples speak, as opposed to dialogues that Hindi films couples say on screen. The trailer reveals that JHMS is a pure entertainer with elements like drama, comedy, intensity and romance.

Yes Krish, this is not rocket science.. it is smart promotion.. its not SRK is new to marketing. They have purposely kept all the good part of promotion in last 2 weeks(in total of 6 weeks) to increase the buzz. Theatrical trailer then the so-called Love Song(Hawayein) and then by 29/30th, they have Diplo’s song to release. It is bound to increase the hype. I feel theatrical comes too early anyways for majority of the movies.

        • Reality is everything has started to work only after theatrical. The mini trailers were a flop. If coming early is true than everything still would be same as long as trailer comes first – whether 4 or 6 weeks.

        • yes one can understand why you’d save your best for the last (of course one wonders why so many blockbuster films do the opposite…) but it’s hard to explain why you’d put out shorter previews that actually have a negative impact! then again there probably wasn’t a SRK (or anything else related to him) advertising strategy Master ever disagreed with! This much happiness over a couple of effective trailers and the poor Aamir fans were slammed for talking about the China grosses all the time. I do admit one or two people had been excessive with this. But hey no one’s ‘Mr Neutral’ here! Specially not those who agree with every single step SRK takes (the same for some other fans of other stars).

All this has proved is the reverse can work but I don’t think the marketing team were out to prove this. If anything they’ve been forced into an earlier theatrical trailer that no one or Master wants to admit to.

        • SRK is just passe in a way the industry’s top stars, even if they are from the same generation, just aren’t: it’s been years since a SRK film had genuine buzz, most of the time there is this middling interest (he is a major star, so has that core audience), nothing like the “yaar dekhna hi hai!” that is a hallmark of most of the Salman, Aamir films. And even apart from the terrain of the biggest blockbusters, these films don’t have the critical excitement associated with them that (whether or not justified) an edgy film will have. Honestly, the debate is online in a way that isn’t reflective of “the real world”…

Well said! Raees kind of broke that mould. It ignited excitement after along time. The genre of romance is a hiding to nothing. Unless it forms a part of a grander narrative. There’s more interesting romance in Bahubali than out and out romance films.

The larger narrative still remains the same for SRK. Master unintentionally has touched on it. He’s still far to etched in memory to the Chopras and even when you think he’s rid he lands up with Imtiaz Ali!

He must be husband’s nightmare. Going home to the SRK fan, the wife and listening daily to why can’t you be like Raj or Rahul. He’s probably caused many a domestic!

        • Raees is the first SRK film I saw in a decade — caught it on Netflix and liked the masala elements as well as a number of visuals, it was really quite good, although it went a bit wrong in the second half. The biggest issues with Raees for me were: (1) SRK is just not that convincing on this terrain; I understand everyone has their hang-ups, but actors’ hang-ups play out before an audience, and SRK has this obsession with returning to masala terrain and playing a tough guy (Ramjaane, Don, Don 2, Raees), and he just doesn’t do it that well — Raees was probably his best such effort; (2) casting Mahira Khan was an appalling choice, she was like a fish out of water, and was utterly unconvincing as the middle-class Gujarati young woman: everything about her screams posh Lahori); (3) the film had a very definite Guru-hangover, right down to the crusader nemesis (Maddy replaced by Nawazuddin), and that juxtaposition does not flatter the actors in the later film. That is, both Abhishek and Madhavan are actors who can make MORE of a role than is written, which is not something that is true of either SRK or Nawazuddin (it almost sounds blasphemous to say this of the latter these days, when he’s held up as The Actor by just about everyone; and Nawaz is a good (if limited) actor, and an effective screen presence for sure (in particular, he has a gift for wry comedy that needs to be mined), but he does not add an extra dimension to his roles — he will do justice to the role as written).

Satyam.. didn’t expect such replies from you. You join the usual folks who said I was against Dangal or something.. I was only objecting to ‘twitter’ copy-pastes. If there was even 100 comments in discussion like usual boxoffice thread, no one would object but looking at comments.. all was getting hidden based on huge twitter posts and copy-pastes of the actual links. My objection was mainly for that part. I wasn’t even talking about consolidation, that was yours and munna’s suggestion.

Anyways, if one has to keep bringing that point.. I won’t add much to the discussion.

        • I know what you were saying and I agreed with you as well. I’m making a larger point here. The thing is one develops a ‘nose’ for certain things in life. People often try to sound very fair in their comments but one always says more than one intends to. Or to put it more precisely language always betrays one. I’m not talking about you specifically but about all of us. My point simply is that what one thinks one is saying and what one might actually mean (consciously or not) are two different things. Here in any case I wasn’t trying to say that those excesses of posting day by day grosses were ok. The analogy though is with a perspective on a star which makes it impossible for one to be negative about any of the star’s choices in any sense and which at some level prevents one from even seeing obvious facts. So yes those twitter pastes were excessive but I don’t define ‘excess’ only in such a limited way. I often hear explanations for what stars do or don’t do that sound as ridiculous and excessive to me.

  77. All the trailers have got positive or at worse neutral reactions from people. This song is going to be a big hit and there is still the song with Diplo or Diljeet left (or maybe both). What was seeming like a bad marketing strategy has actually worked well in keeping the core fan base interested. They need to get the core fans in on the first two days (45-50 cr) and with decent WOM, this might be a good hit in romance genre since YJHD.

    Like

    • It will need more than just decent WOM to do nearly 200 cr like YJHD did (or more). But agree that what seemed like a weak promotional strategy with the initial mini-trails has picked up pace in the later stages. The trick has been to expose the best parts and songs closer to the release. The promotional material has been good enough to now lure the fans of SRK’s romantic image into theaters in the initial 2-3 days. But the lifetime total will depend on how feel-good the movie turns out to be.

He may get a big hit here. But I would think that may not be good for the long run. If he gets the required biggie doing romance at this stage, it will only prolong the wait for him to experiment more. As an actor he has the potential to grow and do much more.

I’m guessing Yash’s most iconic romance will be decades ago and Aditya has never hit the heights of DDLJ, in fact the YRF film factory tries to eek every ounce of juice out of that film like KJo will with KKHH. Imtiaz I guess is debatable – some will like JWM, some Tamasha etc. But this seems a compromise on his kind of cinema vs. how SRK is presented. JTHJ or RNBDJ will hardly be revered as peak of romance phase. The only connection here is SRK. That’s all.

Mainly revolving around the 2 stars. Not much role for family, friends etc? A testing time for SRK if he can maintain his 3rd rank. 150crr and above will ensure that and at 180-190crrs will be sigh of relief for him as it will be the biggest grosser from bollywood till TZH arrives. But if it is boring and bland like JTHJ then could wrap under 120crrs and Akki will have chance to jump ahead of SRK.

Now chances are that it may open in the 20+ Crores range & if finds acceptance among its target audience, can easily cross 150 & go further depending on its repeat value. Just that TEPK is arriving in the next week & might hamper its prospects if TEPK is as good as its trailor suggests, still both can survive if their content is good as India has enough screens to accommodate 2 good films.

    • It will open big. It’s all over my Facebook – the marketing blitz on this format is huge, to the extent every fourth post is from RCE.

      • Surprisingly the single screens have opened not too badly…Raj Mandir which is the No 1 single screen in country is already showing some shows full for the weekend. But this could be an exception…Many more SS will open on Wed and that will tell us the real trend in SS. I cant think SS will be excited for this after all the tepid trailors and songs and with SRKs current standing.

Many of multiplex will be corporate bookings so could be skewing the advance…North should open big due to the Punjabi dialect unlike Raees which was let down by the North. Mumbai, South and Bengal are usually SRK’s forte so should be fine..

Overall this looks like opening above 20 crs for sure now. Above 20 crs is not so great anyways as Fan opened at 20 crs even though it is niche and Raees and Dilwale opened at 24crs with a clash. But as Satyam said the other day, I need to account for SRKs current status (not at a high) and the multiplex genre of the movie. I guess 23 to 24 crs will be good enough accounting for that. Best case scenario will be the PK range…

        • Leaving aside debates about star status (and comparison with Salman or Aamir) an opening 20 crores or north of it is fine assuming good trending. In other words if the film trends well it can still get to a good final total. Raj Mandir isn’t a single screen in the typical sense though. This is a huge theater that has still retained a great deal of its prestige. Of course as YJHD showed with its 185 crores or whatever a non-multiplex film can still put up big numbers. Not as much as a big masala film but 200 crores is doable entirely on the strength of multiplexes. Of course YJHD was itself an exception as no other romance or rom-com in this sort of multiplex format (not Rohit Shetty!) has been liked as much by the multiplex audience (ironically enough!) in several years. Nonetheless the opportunity remains for a film to do a lot with these screens (that drive the gross anyway.. even for a big masala film you can’t get big numbers without these screens). I suspect you could go a fair bit north of 200 crores if the film were truly loved. The problem is we’re not in the 90s. The peak period of that genre has long been over. SRK still gets enough of the nostalgia audience which is why he still has a shot in this genre. On the other hand when it’s Imtiaz Ali and you try to split the difference you might end up neither cool enough for a younger demographic nor satisfying enough for the older one. So again it’s possible but improbable (at least without hot stars). The 200 crore or more gross. Even with competition it’s possible (Bajirao got 170 or more with competition, a much more difficult genre.. we probably undersell Deepika though.. she’s been in all these big ones in a variety of genres… from CE to Bajirao).

  87. What an absolute joke. Every Indian (especially the raciest gujju) who voted for this dump should be ashamed of themselves.

Has been a nonstop circus from day 1.

I just don’t understand what made people think that he was the savior. Spitting out anit-islam, anti-minorities, anti-just about everything, what did you expect?

What makes him a successful business owner if not a single USA owned bank would loan him any money. The fact is he isn’t all that, take away money that he got from Deutsche Bank (via Russian investors), what does he have?

Wonder what will be in the circus ring tomorrow…

  88. But did you know that the version of the song that we’ ve seen now may not be its final version in the film? Well, talking about the same, Shah Rukh Khan reveals that the song is still in progress and the final version for the film is being worked on. The actor shared, “I remember we shot this song at the end, and whenever Imtiaz asked Dada on this song Dada said don’t worry, this song I’ll (Shah Rukh Khan will) definitely handle. So I think it’s just come out of love. We are still doing this song for the film, the song is still in progress. The writers, directors, music directors really look at me with a lot of love when a love song comes.”

    • Anushka looking elegant , classy and sexy all at the same time….very rare for indian beauty.

If she is anywhere close to Deepika in her act wrt to CE, they have a winner here.

      • CE was a very well made masala film with single track (not unnecessary multiple stories) with good songs. And it looked and felt rooted film (none of the Switzerland/usa/London stuff).

This was doesn’t feel rooted, but I think this movie will surprise. The conditions are shaping up well (except not having a long clear run).

  89. Advance is really good in Bangalore, main properties late nite shows are filling fast or sold out. The decision to delay the Phurr-DIplo song till Aug 2 shows the makers have confidence in the song plus the rest of the buzz being created. All in all, as I have been saying all along this is looking to surprise in a big way. Hope it happens, good for SRK and the industry.

After the brilliant longish trailer this Phurr song is such a downer
‘for me’ and once again puts srk in wannabe category and this is too close to Ranbir’s Matarghasti. (Imtiaz bhai kuch toh change karo…)

Nonetheless this one I will watch sometime during the first weekend itself on the big screen. Starving for a decent hindi flick…..God knows what kind of cosmetic enhancements Anushka has done but she is very yummy to look at these days. May be the glow exudes from traditional plain old good sex.

Poor predictions and overall analysis. But another source pointing out the big price tag and the need for 160 CR + just from expectations basis.

Still think the cards are stacked in favour here and barring a real crap film this should finish above Raees.
