  1. WHAT? Shah Rukh Khan had a drunken girl hanging onto him when Imtiaz Ali met him for the first time

Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali are collaborating for the very first time for a romantic comedy in Jab Harry Met Sejal. While the film is all set to hit the screens this Friday, Imtiaz Ali has made some interesting revelation about meeting Shah Rukh Khan for the very first time.

In a candid interview with a tabloid, Imtiaz Ali recalled how and when he met Shah Rukh Khan. He remembered that it was a film festival in London when many celebrities were invited including SRK. Imtiaz revealed that everyone was hanging out when he saw Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan coming through a narrow aisle in the hotel with a drunk girl hanging on to SRK.

Imtiaz Ali further revealed that the girl was a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan. So, when she approached him, SRK was dealing with her gracefully without demeaning her while his wife Gauri Khan accompanied him and tried to deal with the fan. He said that SRK was being nice to the girl. When SRK saw Imtiaz Ali, he stopped to have a conversation with him while the girl kept saying ‘Oh Shah Rukh, Oh Shah Rukh’. He continued talking to Imtiaz Ali while taking care of the girl. Being a gentleman, SRK put the girl’s arm on one side of his shoulder and continued the conversation with Imtiaz. Later, SRK asked Imtiaz to meet him to discuss his film stories. This was after Jab We Met had released.

  4. ‘Intercourse’ goes missing from Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal days before release

Shah Rukh Khan Jab Harry Met Sejal

After all the hue and cry over Shah Rukh Khan’s bedroom banter with his co-star Anushka Sharma in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab Harry Met Sejal where they were heard negotiating over the legalities of “intercourse” the offensive ‘i’ word has been removed from the film days before release.

According to sources the raunchy conversation that sent a shiver up the moralists’ collective spine, has been curtailed. Says a source, “There is no mention of ‘intercourse’ in the dialogues. It’s gone. After all the talk of curtailing creativity Imtiaz Ali and Shah Rukh Khan finally decided to play the family card.”

The film has as many as 13 songs and is being seen as a fresh take on the romance Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol created in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

I guess he really needs a complete positive WOM here to push the opening higher as well. If WOM is positive many more people will turn up for this and on the flip side the opposite is true as well.

  7. REVEALED: Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar to play dacoits in their next
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Aug 3, 2017 – 11:35 am IST

Sushant Singh Rajput, who already has more than a couple of films on his platter, is all set for yet another film – this one to be directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The actor, in fact, will play the role of a dacoit, something he has never done before, in this film. Furthermore, he will be starring opposite Bhumi Pednekar.

Bhumi Pednekar, who is currently promoting her forthcoming release Toilet – Ek Prem Katha with co-star Akshay Kumar, too will be seen in the role of a dacoit. In fact, this is the first time where we will see these two actors sharing screen space. Set in Chambal during the 70s, co-writer of the film Sudip Sharma has already scouted for locations and finished the recee of the film.

He had earlier revealed that he had met a few reformed dacoits, some of them who have over 80 murder charges on them but he was also quick to add that the film will showcase dacoits in a completely different light unlike other Bollywood films as their aim is to capture reality.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the untitled venture will go on floor early next year and will be extensively amidst the Chambal valley. As of now, Sushant Singh Rajput is in the midst of preparing for his space adventure film Chanda Mama Door Ke, while Bhumi Pednekar will next be focusing on her another release Shubh Mangal Savdhan with Ayushmann Khurrana.

  9. Can Jab Harry Met Sejal Turn The Tide
    Thursday 03 August 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

This week it is Jab Harry Met Sejal which has Shahrukh Khan and music as the plus factors. The music may not have had a chart buster but its songs are successful. Obviously Shahrukh Khan is going to bring some sort of the audience to the theatres but again Jab Harry Met Sejal is not the killer opening type as the content is not universal. The demographics of its business give it potential to grow over the weekend and when that is there the opening can’t be bumper. Its not a five city film but its also not more than a ten city film unless its a huge surprise. The metros are there and it could also have an audience in places like Chandigarh, Baroda, Hyderbad etc but to expect it to work in a Gorakhpur, Ajmer, Jabalpur may be pushing it. Basically its an urban film with the starpower of Shahrukh Khan which can take it a little further. Hardly any urban crosses 100 crore nett so here a 150 crore nett total would be a good result which may not be a Shahrukh Khan blockbuster but its a big number for this type of film.

The film will release on around 2100 theatres which should take it to around 3200 screens. Raees had opened on 2700 theatres and went to 3400 screens as its multiplexes screens were shared. The advance of Jab Harry Met Sejal opened on Sunday but it was yesterday (Wednesday) that it picked up and that has been seen with the big releases over the last year or so, the advance contribution on Wednesday and Thursday is huge. It will in the evening that it will be known where the film stands against the likes of Tubelight and Raees in terms of advance.

The biggest negative for Jab Harry Met Sejal is the director Imtiaz Ali who tends to make similar films which are about a journey of two people and tend to be labelled love stories but romance is usually missing or at least the Yash Chopra type which the audience sees as romance and brings the families in hordes. The director had a success in Jab We Met (2007) which found appreciation at some places only and then Love Aaj Kal opened on the super hit music but could not really sustain post the first week. The less said about the others the better. The hope is that when you direct a superstar you get the responsibility of catering to a wider audience which the superstar will bring and you live upto the responsibility, not only for the sake of the film and the fans of the superstar but the industry in general.

    • So BOI has created the ground to call it a hit even if it folds up at 100 cr. Question is, if it is indeed a ten cities deal, then why release in 3200 screens?

      • Its 3200 screens…3200 theatres is like a universal release. 3200 screens in 2100 theatres sounds like a restricted release..

        • That’s lesser than Raees in a clash….

          Like

        • Its not a restricted release like 2000 screens which will cover only the main cities. Raees also had a similar release on 3400 screens, so getting a 20 cr opening day may not be a problem if his core base is still excited to see him attempting another DDLJ.

          Like

        • Yes 20cr is the target….but i was expecting close to 3800 screens…Raees was a clash and this isnt…so should ideally be going above Raaes…But it is lesser by 200….Also Raees was 2700 theatres and BOI says this is 2100 theatres, so it does look like they have avoided many of the B and C theatres completely…

          Like

        • Salman films like TL and Sultan opened in 4400 screens. So JHMS must be having less single screens in B & C centers. But at 3200 screens it is still a considerable big release.

      • Going by advance trend in delhi Ncr all premium multiplexes seem to be having much higher bookings vs the ones in say Ghaziabad and noida. Clearly the feel is that of an urban film and srk on low form doesn’t help. So Boi commentary though pathetic is atleast right in some aspects, of course to call it a success at 100 cr would be outrageous. 200 crore should be the deal for any clean hit for any of the khans nowadays.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Budget, Screen Count, Economics

Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal is releasing this Friday. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, the film is directed by Imtiaz Ali.

    Jab Harry Met Sejal Budget:

As per the sources close to the film, JHMS has been made on a budget of 85-90 cr (excluding SRK’s fee). After adding his market value the budget will be up to 125-130 crores.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Screen Count:

The film is releasing in approx 3400 screens in India. The makers have opted for a more controlled release as the film will have more appeal towards the urban audience. While in overseas it is one of the widest Bollywood release ever and screen count will be more than 1000. The film is simultaneously releasing in all international markets.

    Jab Harry Met Sejal Economics:

JHMS is already a heavily profitable venture for the producers. The Indian distributor rights are sold at 75 crores to NH Studios. Thus the film should go over 150 crore for recovering costs for distributors.

    Budget:

    Productions Costs: 70 Cr
    Marketing Costs: 20 Cr
    Total: 90 Cr

    Recovery:

    Satellite Rights: 45 Cr
    Music rights: 15 Cr
Digital, Merchandising and Ancillary rights Rights: 35 Cr
    Distributor Price: 75 Cr
    Overseas Rights: 40 Cr
    Total: 210 Cr

    Economics:

    Recover Costs: 150 Cr
    Hit: 160 Cr
    Super Hit: 195 Cr
    Blockbuster: 225 Cr

    Expectations:

Jab Harry Met Sejal is mainly for the urban audience so the expectations are not that huge. The biggest drawbacks are the director and a poor promotional strategy. However, there is Shahrukh Khan and a hit music which can ensure a good opening. It will be a good start if the film manages 18-20 crore on opening day considering the genre. The lifetime can go up to 150 crores if it finds appreciation among its target audience.

  12. Jagga Jasoos debacle: Why pre-release and focus screenings are very important

    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Aug 3, 2017 – 1:54 pm IST

Two weeks ago, there were reports that Rishi Kapoor is livid over the fact that Anurag Basu is not allowing him to watch Jagga Jasoos, a film that featured his son Ranbir as the actor and producer. Later, the veteran actor confirmed that this was indeed the case and that they caught the film just a day before release. While this is an unprecedented incident wherein a co-producer didn’t get to see the film till a day before the release, it seems such cases are on the rise where filmmakers, usually new age ones, are refusing to share the film with the near and dear ones in the industry.

This wasn’t always the case however. Most filmmakers do show their film to their mentors in Bollywood or to those whose opinions matter, usually a month or two before release. Their suggestions are noted down and are taken seriously. The whole unit at times is shown the film for the same reason. Years ago, Sooraj Barjatya had confirmed that he showed his film to his unit and told them to send their suggestions and comments anonymously. He felt that if he personally asked the unit members, they might give a sugar coated reply. Aamir Khan recently showed his 2016 blockbuster Dangal almost three months before to Shabana Azmi, Karan Johar, Satyajit Bhatkal etc.

A section of filmmakers aren’t just content with showing films to Bollywood-wallahs. They conduct focus group screenings, wherein a bunch of people are randomly selected and shown their film. As per their feedback, changes are made in films. There was supposed to be an African war scene in the beginning scene of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey which was chopped off after audiences found it needless. Aamir Khan-Rajkumar Hirani’s PK had a different ending at first. The film was to end with Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) and Sarfaraz (Sushant Singh Rajput) doing the rooftop dance, taught to the former by PK (Aamir), after he leaves Earth. However, viewers in the focus screenings exited feeling grim. That’s when the team thought of ending the film on a happy note. Hence, the scene of PK returning back with Ranbir Kapoor was shot and incorporated. This one scene took the film many notches higher. Imagine if Rajkumar Hirani had done an Anurag Basu and not changed its finale? Would PK have been the same?

In fact, Aamir Khan strongly believes in the power of these screenings and as per a report, he has been doing this since his first film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. He even went all the way to show his 2008 action romance flick Ghajini to carpenters and migrant workers. Karan Johar had confirmed that he had screened Wake Up Sid, My Name Is Khan and I Hate Luv Storys for a select group of aam aadmis. In fact, in Johar’s My Name Is Khan, the flood scene was even longer and eight minutes of it were edited after feedback received.

Several other films have had focus screenings and rightly so. It is a great exercise to make films better. Anurag Basu would have definitely benefited with such a screening or with a screening for film industry colleagues. He would have perhaps then got the feedback that Jagga Jasoos is too long and seems disjointed. Maybe he would have been told that the manner in which Jagga ‘ends’ terrorism in the climax is shockingly pathetic, which would have prompted him to reshoot or come up with a better ending. The film would not have become flawless but at least would have become slightly better than what is.

Here’s hoping Anurag Basu learns from these mistakes and does better in his next outing!

After success of Lungi Dance, Srk keeps doing this last minute addition to soundtrack but they are worthless and he should graduate now to thematic songs which are relevant to the story. Time for tukur tukur , sharabi feat is long gone and they are not only superficial but shows content is weak hence some additional pumping is going on.

Filmmakers should graduate and try to get one Haanikarak or Dhaakad type Indian desi song which will resonate much longer. Even Sultan had all the right music to rev it up.

I think just coz it is release late, you come up with assumption of calling this an addition. Phurrr was done 1 year back but as usual Pritam never mixes till release. The song is a situation based and comes in the movie and not for the end credits. The only part is they did 1 min shoot with Diplo & SRK last month for promotion but that’s about it. The song comes in the movie during the narrative.

“Filmmakers should graduate and try to get one Haanikarak or Dhaakad type Indian desi song which will resonate much longer”

One has to buy their tickets well ahead of time to avoid getting painful neck injuries when the only available seats are in the very front row. People don’t plan ahead and reserved seating all but ruins an impromptu trip to even a mildly popular movie. The only seat left is directly underneath the screen. why not go home and watch Netflix where the couch has no reserved seating, and the food is cheaper.

Muruganantham is noted for creating low cost sanitary napkins that have eased the experience of menstruation for several hundred Indian women, especially those living in rural areas. Khanna had created a partially fictionalised account of Muruganantham’s journey in her book, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad. A similar story formed the premise of the recently release film Phullu.

Shahrukh, Anushka, Imitiaz, all the very best for your release tomorrow! I’m sure it will rock!! Looking forward !!! Love. a.

Imtiaz is weak on closing the deal. Even his very popular JWM is overhyped except for a dialogue here & there which made Kareena a household name – main apne aap ki favorite hoon or something… Even that movie was dry / drab and shahid kapoor unfit to add the required pizzaz to the performance. He should consider supporting brother roles now and not solo lead material. Imtiaz’s movies with Ranbir started well and showed promise but went haywire midway. The only true different movie from him is Socha Na Tha but that was due to low expectations going in.

Here it seems Imtiaz may taste big success and may graduate to the big league.

If negative WOM, it’ll be as 16+18 +20 = 54 cr weekend and lifetime under 75 crores.

You know sometimes if the movie is very bad, the star gets saved but imagine a situation like Mubarakan.. the movie is good but its not doing well coz of starcast. If it had Akshay, it would have done 150 crores easily. So, the more worse possibility of JHMS being very good and then wrapping under 100 and that seals the door of stardom for SRK.

But Shahrukh needs a clean hit at this point in time as his last universally accepted movie was Chennai Express in 2013 & here he is coming in his strength genre with the current no. 1 heroine, so a flop or an under-performer will certainly affect his standing & will also have a huge bearing on his next mega budget movie with Anand Rai in the trade!! Akshay is just knocking at the door with TEPK in the next week and if TEPK outgrosses JHMS, Akshay would move ahead at 3rd leaving Shahrukh at 4th place in the box office standing. All this would unravel in a span of 10 days!!

  37. BO update: Jab Harry Met Sejal opens to a good start of 40%
    By Bollywood Hungama News Network
    , Aug 4, 2017 – 10:55 am IST

After much talk and promotion we finally see the release of the Shah Rukh Khan – Anushka Sharma starrer JAB HARRY MET SEJAL that is directed by Imtiaz Ali. But will the film, whose star cast has left no stone unturned in promoting it manage to shatter some if not all box office records or will be yet another average performer is the question of the hour.

Reports indicate that JAB HARRY MET SEJAL has opened on a sluggish to good start of 40% occupancy rate at urban multiplexes while single screens have recorded a 25% occupancy rate. However, considering the recent past releases, an low opening of this sort has become a trend given the fact that Fridays are working days and usually start on a slightly slower note compared to Saturdays and Sundays.

On the other hand, JAB HARRY MET SEJAL is expected to post extremely high footfalls on account of good advance bookings for the film for evening and night shows. Interestingly, this trend of advance bookings isn’t limited to only Friday, with reports suggesting that advance bookings for Saturday and Sunday have also been high.

Despite the good rate of advance booking what works against the film is its lack of chartbusting music, the perception of Shah Rukh Khan’s previous releases faltering at the box office and the same travel based storyline from Imtaiz Ali’s previous directorial outings. Simultaneously, initial reviews from the Far East have not been all that encouraging either. Considering these points JAB HARRY MET SEJAL will have to depend heavily on positive word of mouth as well as acceptance from Shah Rukh Khan fans to do the trick at the box office.

I’ve seen so many who loved(including me) Tamasha, Rockstar, Highway, Socha Na Tha and none of these are hits. It appears that JHMS can join these movies(or even fall short in that aspect). So, someone giving 0 star or 1 star means nothing at a personal level to me. But it makes it clear it won’t be a successful movie, that’s all.

Similarly, I had mentioned during Dear Zindagi that folks can give it 0 as they want but it can touch some folks and they’ll love it. Who will like that movie and who will not can’t be known. But if you just see the rating you’ll never understand the movie’s worth.

Where JHMS lands at a personal level, no one knows but the only thing clear now is it won’t be a success(at least a huge one).

  40. Mubarakan Has Low First Week
    Friday 04 August 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan has had low first week collections of 35 crore nett. They are fair if you consider the film only opened at 5 crore nett but overall the film really needed to be around 50 crore nett rather than 35 crore nett in week one.

The film has held reasonably well over the weekdays but for a film which did not open it had to hold better. The film managed to get decent numbers on Saturday and Sunday but that was about it. The poor performance in the North is the failing of the film as its hard for film like this which is very Punjabi to do well if North India does not score.

If the film can hold well on day eight it has chances to reach 50 crore nett but there is huge competition in the form of Jab Harry Met Sejal which will dominate the show. Mubarakan will probably grow well again on Saturday and Sunday as families come out but there has to be some sort of number on Friday for the film to grow from. The film has fared best in cities of UP and Gujarat while West Bengal and Tamil / Kerala recorded very dull collections.

Indu Sarkar is a poor fare with around 4.75 crore nett in week one and will be out of most theatres in week two. The film has not even done 50% of what Lipstick Under My Burkha did the week before in week one.

Jab Harry Met Sejal has taken a good opening of around 35-40% on average. The multiplexes in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Kolkata are the second best of the year after Bahubali – The Conclusion. At other places the opening is not strong as a Raees or Tubelight but that is expected as the content is more urban.

The release is more than 1000 screens less than Tubelight and its less than Raees also in terms of screens but that film had limited capacity at multiplexes due to a clash so despite fewer screens than Raees the capacity is actually more.

If we compare morning occupancy then it is similar to Tubelight on lesser volume but it is lower than Raees. The opening is the lowest for a Shahrukh Khan starrer in a long time (not counting Dear Zindagi) but that is because of the content does not have the initial appeal of a Happy New Year, Dilwale or Raees while a Fan was released on a holiday which pushed up occupancy. The advance also finished lower than Tubelight and Raees as smaller multiplexes and single screens could not match the advance of those films.

Jab Harry Met Sejal is eventually a film which is more content driven rather than the one which opens with a bang so it will have potential upside on Saturday and Sunday if the content is there. The opening day numbers will be best in West Bengal due to the Shahrukh Khan factor, the circuit does not really open well but multiplexes in Kolkata really score for Shahrukh Khan starrers irrespective of content.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: Shah Rukh and Anushka in a film’s still (Courtesy: RedChilliesEnt)
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma

    Director: Imtiaz Ali

Rating: 2 Stars (Out of 5)

First half: breezy but unabashedly banal. Second half: riddled with toe-curling romantic mush. Sum total: a journey without maps that weaves concentric circles around sweet nothings and empty prittle-prattle. That, in a nutshell, is Imtiaz Ali’s perambulatory rom com Jab Harry Met Sejal. It leaves you wishing they hadn’t met.

A raffish man who isn’t getting any younger, a standoffish girl who has a whole life ahead of her and a not-so-brief encounter in Europe that takes the rootless duo across several picturesque locations add up to a mothballed bromide that holds no real surprises.

To be sure, Jab Harry Met Sejal possesses the unfettered, Sufi spirit of Ali’s previous free-wheeling explorations of love and longing. It, however, lacks the flashes of ideational, experiential and tonal originality that livened up parts of those earlier films.

    srk twitter
Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: SRK, Anushka in a still from the film (Courtesy: Red Chillies)

SRK’s return to conventional lover boy terrain – he plays a louche but lonely tourist guide in Europe – does not yield the expected magic. Anushka, in the guise of a young, chirpy lawyer looking for a lost engagement ring, is high-spirited enough to push this plotless whimsy along for a while. In the end, the task proves too onerous for her not to be weighed down by its demands.

Not that there is nothing in Jab Harry Met Sejal for hardcore SRK fans but those moments come only in fits and starts as he dons the persona of the footloose Harindar ‘Harry’ Singh Nehra, who makes no bones about his womanizing tendencies and even brags shamelessly about his amorous conquests while admitting to the many ways he’s got into trouble owing to his rampaging libido. He is a superficially charming man all right, but not particularly likeable.

Sejal Zhaveri, on the other hand, is a diamond merchant’s snooty daughter who does not think much of Harry’s calling and loses no opportunity to take jabs at it. Yet she has no qualms in taking offence when the guy dismisses her as “nice, sweet and sister type”. There is a limit to shallowness.

The beautiful locations are obviously eye-catching, but surely surface gloss, star power, lively music and sparkling camerawork can never be enough to turn a patchy and whimsical film into a convincing two-hander about a pair of individuals thirsting for more than what their lives have offered them.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film (Courtesy: Red Chillies)

Harry seeks true love. Sejal, too, is on a voyage of discovery. Do they get what they are looking for? Not a chance in hell. So flabby is this flighty film that it moves only in hops and skips. It never really takes off.

Jab Harry Met Sejal is cinema’s equivalent of a shiny bauble that glitters wholly in vain. Watch it only if you fancy a vicarious romp through Europe with an off-colour megastar trying hard to get going.

I don’t know if other feel same way but I think Kishor Kumar singing stardom was kind of like Rajesh Kahanna. Went all time high with aradhana and then within 5 years, all the magic was gone (same for RD Burman too). After that it was regular songs and his singing was same in all of it. By late 70s some of the musical hits were of Rafis like Laila Majnu, Sargam, Amar Akbar Anthony, Dharam-Veer, Aasha, etc…

And many big movies had Rafi songs mainly like Naseeb, Shaan, etc…

After Rafis death, in mid to late 80s, the songs kishor sang was forgettable to say the least, especially the ones of Jeetendra films.

      • You’re quite wrong there. Kishore never stopped being the top singer once he reached this with position with Rajesh Khanna. Rafi had some memorable songs in the 70s and even a few in the early 80s but Kishore was completely dominant throughout this period. It’s true that Desai kept using him till he was alive and brought in Shabbir Kumar (!) once he died. But in a contest between Kishore and Rafi after the late 60s Kishore has 9 out of 10 hits for every one that Rafi has. Kishore was the go-to singer for all the top composers at that point. After Rafi’s death too Kishore has a number of important songs (and many of these were big hits too). The songs are too many to even mention. But even in the 70s and barring Desai the situation was even humiliating for Rafi a lot of times because Kishore would often have all the important songs on a soundtrack or most of them and Rafi would get the lesser ones or one or two here or there. Kishore in the 70s was like Rafi in the 60s, utterly dominant. And he never stopped being this till his death though of course over time the volume decreased a bit. In any case he has scores of hits in the 80s.

        • Can you give me examples of his musical hits like rafi had in late 70s like Sargam, laila majnu where the movie ran primerly due to songs.

I really can’t think of any, kishor did have some great songs in late 70s/early 80s for bachhan.

also list 9 out of 10 hits for every rafi in late 60s for that matter late 70s.

Maybe I didn’t state it right, Kishor was at the top but the songs are not memorable, volume vise , not that many. you still hear reference to Rafi in movies today or his songs played in background, I don’t see much of it of kishor.

        • All the great (and no so great) Bachchan films (barring Desai) have Kishore hits. Barring Desai every one of his films have a very iconic Kishore number. These are also among the most iconic songs of that period. RD Burman had hits with him well into the 80s (even if many of the films didn’t do well the songs were great successes). Other composers too. There’s such a long list for the 80s. It’s hard to reproduce it much less for the 70s. Incidentally he kept singing some great numbers for Rakesh Khanna throughout his career even after the latter had declined beyond recognition. The same for other stars too. If you’re truly interested I could produce a long list of Kishore songs for you, those considered memorable/iconic, from the 70s/80s. Just off the top of my head. Because there’s really so much material here that one actually has to think about what one isn’t going to include. the same is true for Rafi in the 60s but certainly not in the 70s. On that note I’ll leave you with a personal favorite, if you haven’t heard it. This is a less known song from the 80s and certainly belongs to a forgettable film but this Khayyam number might be my favorite Kishore from that decade:

on Rafi by the way here’s a rather late favorite from a B grade film with a younger Mithun:

        • Incidentally and though Kishore is my favorite Hindi singer of all time (male or female) if you asked me who the ‘finest’ is I’d say Rafi (male or female). On the question of pure voice it’s a matter of taste (whether one prefers Rafi or Kishore because they’re both great voices).

JAB HARRY MET SEJAL begins on a swift pace. No time is wasted in explaining Harry’s life – his enthusiasm as a guide, his moments of loneliness when no one is watching and his troubled relations with women are well explained in a few minutes in the song ‘Safar’. Sejal is also introduced in no time and the fun begins as they try to find the misplaced ring. The humour comes out very well and the first half moves at a breezy pace. The sequence where Sejal gets into trouble in a Prague bar and the scene thereafter stands out as the best and most exciting portion of the first half. The song ‘Hawayein’ is also played at a poignant and sweet point of the film minutes before the intermission. Post-intermission, the film becomes a drag. The makers seem confused as the narrative gets chaotic. The twist in the tale, related to the ring, might come across as stupid or unfair by a section of audience. At one point, one wonders where exactly the film is heading to. The finale also has a twist but this one is better than the first. The film ends on a predictable, clichéd note.

Imtiaz Ali’s story is weak and gives a déjà vu of some of the prominent love stories of Shah Rukh Khan. Imtiaz Ali’s screenplay is faulty and rather inconsistent. Some sequences are deftly handled and bring out the emotions. Watch out for the sequence where Harry innocently asks Sejal for a hug. But there’s not much of a backstory provided. What prompted Harry to leave his village and what exactly was his equation with his family? Why did he never return back to his ‘pind’? Harry getting overwhelmed in the church and crying seems bizarre. Same goes for him crying out the name of the girl in the echo sequence. Even Sejal’s actions seem unjustified. The manner in which she pretends to be Harry’s girlfriend and is vying for his attention and praises from him don’t make the intended impact. It’s also bewildering how Sejal’s family members leave her alone in Europe and they don’t seem too worried about her. Nobody decides to cancel their return journey to Mumbai for Sejal’s sake and she is left on her own. Moreover, it is revealed that Harry is a man with loose character who has been caught getting physical with his clients. In fact, he was to get deport after one more such case. Yet, Harry’s bosses have no qualms when such a high-profile client like Sejal is left at his mercy. Imtiaz Ali’s dialogues however are straight out of life and yet well-worded.

Imtiaz Ali’s direction, just like the script, is also a bit shaky. Known for handling films like JAB WE MET, LOVE AAJ KAL, ROCKSTAR and HIGHWAY, the writer-filmmaker doesn’t seem to be in complete form.

Performances are wonderful. Shah Rukh Khan looks dashing and performance-wise, he is good. He brings out the angst beautifully without going overboard. Also, the trademark sarcasm that he nailed in KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA and KAL HO NAA HO is brought out here in few scenes and it works very well. However, some of his Punjabi dialogues are difficult to comprehend. Anushka Sharma is on another level altogether in this film. She gets into the skin of her character and her performance makes one smile, guffaw and even move viewers, as and when required. Chandan Roy Sanyal (Gas) has a miniscule role. Aru K Verma (Mayank) has a crucial part and is quite decent. Evelyn Sharma (Mayank’s fiancé) doesn’t get much scope.

Pritam Chakraborty’s music is a mix of some great and average tracks. ‘Radha’ is definitely the best song of the lot, especially for the way it’s shot and placed. ‘Hawayein’ is the next best and again, it’s placed at a beautiful moment in the film. ‘Safar’ serves as a nice introductory track. ‘Beech Beech Mein’ and ‘Raula’ don’t make the desired impact. ‘Phurrr’ is relegated to the background and could have been done away with. ‘Butterfly’ is foot-tapping, played during end credits. Hitesh Sonik’s background score is in sync with the film’s mood.

K U Mohanan’s cinematography is stunning. The locales of Europe and its bylanes are very well captured. Aarti Bajaj’s editing could have crisper and smooth. The way the song ‘Beech Beech Mein’ begins all of a sudden immediately after the intermission confuses audience.

On the whole, JAB HARRY MET SEJAL has its moments. But the film is riddled with clichés and flaws that takes the film down, thanks to the poor script. At the box office, the film might have a good weekend but will struggle in the weekdays and in Week 2.

SRK never fail to surprise me. Even his enemies will admit that he is one of the most intelligent person but i dont kno what happens when it come to films. I mean after working in Bollywood for more then 25 years he doesn’t know what works with audience. I mean how far you can be from reality. Even Salman and Akshay have changed the track of thier film but SRK is confused.

I dont care if JHMS opens with 30 cr day 1 and does lifetime of 200 cr or it opens to 15 cr and folds around 100 cr. My comment based on 2 facts

    1- He still uses DDLJ refrences (SRK, YRF और Dharma ने DDLJ को जितना निचोड़ा है उतना तो फुटपाथ पर जूस बेचने वाला भी गन्ने को नहीं निचोड़ता)
2- He is doing Tukur-Tukur, Sharabi and furrr kind of song.

Saying all this i am still praying for him B/C he is a part of Teenage years. और टीनएज ईयर्स में जिसने Entertain किया हो उसे लेकर एक Soft Corner तो रहता ही है..Like Yakuza wit Amitabh Bachchan. Nut i am not stuck in time zone. I have Moved to Ranveer singh. But still wishing best for JHMS.

    • Agreed. SRK hasn’t moved with the times. The times has unfortunately moved him and again he has come up short according to opinions. Even his next is a romcom, albeit one where he is a dwarf. Needs to move on quickly and perhaps employ someone to read scripts before he okays them, and in particular look for the poor second half issue which plagues pretty much all his films bar a few.

It maybe true that he doesn’t pay much attention to script as he himself says that he rather go with a director’s vision for him as it is his story rather than srk’s. So maybe it’s all these directors who are stuck with their teenage association with ddlj or srk and needs to move on.

Yakuza it’s not about just the script but being true to the genre being attempted and working towards authenticity and genuineness. Even a Houseful 3 or Golmaal 3 with hardly any script has more value because they stay sincere with its core elemental fantasy ride which they embark on. The job gets easier if casting is done well which further facilitates this fantasy ride.

Keeping up with the time is another aspect to staying relevant. We are in 2017 and not the 70s/ 80s/ 90s/ 2000s or even 2010s. Tastes are changing fast and just to bring a example in this context, ripping a shirt during a song to show your umbilical vein is a very 2000 thing to do.It’s yucky to look and seems a wannabe thing in today’s time whatever may be the target audience. In my mind both HR and SRK are two who have both denigrated and stuck on trying to look young, skinny with flat belly and gross naval displays. God only knows who they are trying to impress or just their own wives or girlfriends to stay relevant to them because at the moment both seem unstable and on constant dose of Prozac.

  56. Part of the problem, and SRK mentiones this in a lot of his interview that he just want to act, and not be bothered about all other departments of the film. He is managing his fil career same as his business. He expect the director to do his job, script writer to do his, etc.. Which works if you have salim-javed writing script, desai directing, not in todays time. He is an extremely successful person with net worth probably more then the next 10 highest Indian actors put together. But he needs to start running his films differently from how he runs his business which I don’t think will happen cause eve in his last interview he said, he just wants to act ad not look at anything else.

This is where Aamir excels because he looks at every department, I keep saying this that aamir should move to being director/actor and he’ll be one of the best actor/director in lines with raj kapoor. I don’t mean he’ll be better or as good as Raj Kapoor because I think (others may disagree) Raj Kapoor had a complete understanding of the films and there wasn’t anything artificial.

    • If thats how SRK feels about the film-making then he shouldn’t produce films that star him in them, if you’re credited as a producer then, quite naturally, you take some responsibility for the end product beyond your performance!

      Like

      • Again, business mentality, is he losing money on any of the films he produces?

Economics is such where everybody ends up getting little piece of the pie. Of course when the movie makes money like BB2 or Dangal, then you get a lot in return.

Of course this model won’t work for everybody, it works for SRK because he is SRK and makes a lot of money from his business ventures allowing him to take on risks like this but to my earlier point, as a producer, he is not losing money.

But I do agree with you, that you should take responsibility for the end product beyond your performance.

The only solution for SRK is to surrender to a first class director and avoid giving, for lack of better word ‘chichora’ suggestion while filming. He is becoming a case of ‘easy come and easy go’. He acquired superstardom without much sweat and he feels he can get away doing inane things on screen because audience loves him. TL proved even hardcore fans will give a movie miss if bullshit is shown in the name of story and more than filmmaking one is indulging in bhaichara.

Among the young directors , SRK will kill Imtiaz’s career too and no weak director can give him a success and that is why Anand Rai movie is in danger if he isn’t tough taskmaster.

If and that is a big ‘if’ he is interested in doing movies then collaborate with a hard hitting realistic no nonsense director. At the moment light fluff will only work with Hirani as rest of them have lost ‘objectivity’ to direct him…

He should thank himself that the younger competition is so weak that he can still stay in audience’s mind otherwise in film business stars come and go and audience does not give a damn for substandard product. Luckily did not book tickets and will have to make alternate plans for weekend.

More on this a bit later. let’s get back to work…

      • Discounting indulgent directors lured to SRK for his DDLJ / KKHH persona, Ratnam (Dil Se), Gowariker (Swades), Shimit Amin (CDI) and Aziz Mirza (post DDLJ) are the best directors who have stayed clear of the Raj / Rahul persona. He absolutely needs to be a submissive actor and forget production (except for financial aspect).

Imtiaz Ali was an interesting director only if he was given creative freedom like that suicide film. SRK seems a medlar and interference in the wrong way. Whereas Aamir adds value SRK seems to devalue IF he indeed gets involved.

The other thing is his core fanbase is 20+ years older and wiser from DDLJ, yet he is still making films for them that are too modern with that same model and cue from DDLJ. He’s looking at his past for success, whereas Aamir just goes forward. Salman reinvented himself but right now is in a predicament too IMO.

SRK has a VFX platform; he could be utilising that better with better directors. Except for a Hirani or Rajamoulli film he’s wilting slowly unless his choices improve.

He mentioned in an interview yesterday that he doesnt even check the monitor how the shot was given..and Imtiaz and Anushka were right there attesting that. This is just a case of putting the blame on SRK even if he is appreciated in a movie, but the movie isnt appreciated that much..whether that is fan, Raeez or this film. Okay he can be blamed for not paying attention to the script or not picking the right ones, but assuming it is due to his suggestions that a film turmed up the way it is rather convenient for the purpose.

  58. On SRK while those who don’t like him can get a bit too dismissive those who like him are also often as divorced from reality. I’ll recap things a bit:

There’s a difference between a declining top star and a much smaller one. A declining top star can still count on his history with the audiences. Moreso in certain genres. Beyond this a declining star can, especially in this day and age of the Hollywood-like production, put together subjects in different genres that excite a large part of his audience or at least an important cross-section of it. A top star even in decline can also start poaching on other dominant genres of the day and get some traction that way. All of this is possible because the star has built up enough cultural capital over time. Even rapidly declining top stars don’t suddenly fade. Or this really happened only once on Bollywood. Rajesh Khanna’s dramatic decline (to match his meteoric, really seminal rise) but here he lost out to an even greater force called Amitabh Bachchan. then there were historical factors as well. But this is hardly the norm. Usually top stars can hang around for a while. Hey, even less than top stars can extend their life quite a bit!

In some sense (I’ve been saying this for long) the last time one could say SRK was truly on top was 2004. He had MHN and VZ that year, Swades was a critical success if not a commercial one. In 2005 Paheli didn’t work, the big grossers were BnB and No Entry. In 2006 KANK fizzled out after big start, Don was always tepid, meanwhile Aamir had Fanaa and RDB, hrithik had Krrish and D2. In ’07 SRK nonetheless had a very strong year with OSO and CDI. Unfortunately he couldn’t build on it. In 2008 RNBDJ was fine but completely swamped by Ghajini in every sense imaginable. After this everyone knows the history. Every single film SRK did in every conceivable kind of genre, at every conceivable end of the production spectrum either failed or completely underperformed. From Don2 to JTHJ to HNY to Ra One to MNIK to Dilwale to Raees to Fan to DZ. One can’t say he hasn’t tried! Even counting from 2007 that’s a decade! The only important exception of course is CE. That was 4 years ago and he’s had several releases since.

But in one sense this history isn’t strange when it comes to SRK. Because this is the way he was even his peak years. Then too he tried other stuff but beyond Yashraj/Johar almost nothing ever worked (though a couple of rom-coms here and there did decently enough). In other words even at his peak he was never the Salman kind of star let alone the Aamir kind. Where most of your films work one way or the other and even when you underperform you get to a very high gross. Put differently Salman can have a Jai Ho here, a Tubelight there (though of course this is a huge failure, much moreso than Jai Ho) as long as he mostly has films like Sultan or Bajrangi or Kick etc and where even a failure like the Barjatya film does 200. If Salman suddenly started producing Tubelight-like results 50% of the time he would still probably be doing better than everyone else (barring Aamir) but he would be in decline. In any case SRK has struggled after the age of 40. It’s his bad luck that his two most immediate peers have had their best careers in the same period.

Decline doesn’t mean that people stop showing up for a star. That’s absurd. But it starts affecting your standing. So even has he was failing SRK could mostly get good or strong (and sometimes outstanding) initials. Ironically his romance initials have been relatively weak for some time. RNBDJ’s initial was nothing extraordinary, all factors considered. JTHJ was always lukewarm, now looks like the current film will be the same. CE again is the only exception but this with a director who was getting hits with everyone and with an actress who was going through her hottest phase. Still there are some very strong opening day numbers in there from Ra 1 to HNY. But in all the recent release I’d say that even the initial has been affected. Dilwale had a weak one, JHMS will almost certainly have it. Raees, Fan hardly his strongest initials. Ultimately we can play games and talk about competition and screen counts and what not. When something happens for such a long period of time the pattern becomes obvious. For the fans though it’s always about the ‘next one’. But notice how hard it becomes to get that ‘next one’. Since 2004 he’s had top grossers twice. Once 10 years ago, once 4 years ago and neither one was the top grosser in any defining sense (either not the topmost grosser of that general period or so because of inflation and soon overtaken by a huge margin). Even this would be acceptable if he could do it regularly. He’s had many high profile releases, he’s marketed them to death and he’s not had the desired results. Even his overseas dominance was completely lost in this period.

Is he still an important star? Sure! I’m not one of those who thinks Akshay is getting ahead of him. That’s never going to happen. All of Akshay’s hits prove this. However staying ahead of Akshay could hardly be the only game for SRK given all of his ‘royal’ claims in the past. And if he keeps this up he could still fall further. Akshay has at least stabilized himself. In any case a top star’s competition is with his past history and certainly with his immediate peers. It’s not about ‘hey at least I’m still better than most of the other stars’!

From ’88 (when he returned from a two year break) to ’92 Bachchan (when he left again for 5 years) easily the top star in terms of initials. There was no one else even close. Similarly some of the final grosses were still remarkable on the failures or underperformers. Often among the top ones of the year. But it was clear that Bachchan was in decline. And we’re talking about Hindi cinema’s greatest star here! Again the fans would wait for the ‘next one’. Over time a pattern emerged. Bachchan two had important hits in this period. The Hum initial bordered on hysteria (I doubt there has been a stronger initial in Bombay cinema since, pound for pound), Aaj Ka Arjun was a big hit at the height of the Rath Yatra riots. Nonetheless there were a lot more underperformers and failures. Because Bachchan’s standard was an altogether different one. SRK was never in that sort of position but the logic is the same. A top star can keep doing high profile stuff for a while and put up numbers that flatter to deceive. Along the way there will also be a success or two but the tide will have turned against such a star. What’s happening to SRK isn’t even historically odd. What is odd though is Aamir’s extraordinary run and Salman’s suddenly resurgence this late in his career. In most other cases those two would also be in the same boat.

I also wouldn’t blame SRK too much for his choices. He’s selected lousy scripts or poor directors or whatever but in fairness all stars do this. Aamir is the exception even by historical standards. Most stars don’t have any out of the ordinary script sense. When they’re successful they get the best productions, they do them, it’s not rocket science. When they need to reinvent themselves they don’t have the judgment because they’ve never had it. Consider the kinds of films Bachchan did (even in the 80s when these worked big time for him, most of the films aren’t a patch on his great 70s stuff, yes he got great success being the one man industry but that’s a testament to his gifts as an actor and a star not to his judgment, otherwise those gifts could have been put to better use in better films)! This is so for every other star too. Barring exceptions here and there. Aamir’s uncanny sense is truly unique. For any industry.

SRK too has wasted his stardom for at least a decade. He could have done way better in romance, way better on the masala-action terrain and so on. But again it always looks easier than it is. When a star is in decline he depends on an older loyal audience. But the strength genres don’t remain fashionable. The older audience is most invested in these. The star gets older, the genres become stale, the older audience cannot enjoy these efforts in the same way. Meanwhile the newer audience has never been on board for the older genres. The star then attempts newer genres but he’s not as convincing in them because he doesn’t have the same history with them. So newer audiences are still not persuaded and older ones still wait for KKHH2! This is why reinvention is always difficult. The star always falls between two stools.

Despite all this the media has throughout his career been rather kind to him throughout his career. At his peak they never called him out for his failures and now for a decade they’ve just pretended he’s one of the ‘Khans’. Aamir was accepted as the biggest very late after he’d been delivering hit after hit for years and then the very biggest grossers. Salman too after extraordinary success. They never got this kind of pass earlier on!

Now it’s foolish to say ‘it’s over’ for SRK. But it’s equally foolish to say ‘he’s fine because he isn’t finished’. The two sides feed off each other’s exaggerations. I’ve felt for a while that SRK is in trouble. Again in that same relative sense. Those who don’t like him think JHMS proves everything. But those who are fans would have thought there were no problems at all of the film had done 200. One battles the other side’s fantasy with one’s own! I do believe JHMS, if it really does as badly as looks to be the case right now, does mark an important point. He now needs total reinvention. Certainly compared with Aamir or Salman the gulf is now wide. Incidentally I don’t really think playing the dwarf is going to save him.

All other discussions about his ‘intelligence’ (this too has been a selling point in the media and among the fans) are beside the point. He’s ‘so intelligent’ that he can’t manage his career better when he most needs to. This is his #1 job right? All his ‘marketing genius’ cannot get him films as acclaimed as Aamir’s nor even successes at the same level. We must stop disseminating these fairy tales. Finally about his being rich or richer than many other stars (admittedly Z insists on this the most), again I’m not sure what this has to do with his career (even assuming this is true and I personally think this is another fantasy). Being rich is a not a consolation prize for failing at the box office!

It’s still not too late for SRK but you don’t develop judgment all of a sudden or this late in the day. It’s true that all his younger peers aren’t doing any better. But the ‘I am the king’ spiel is now reduced to ‘hey I’m at least #3’! I doubt SRK is satisfied with this consolation prize either. Again to be clear SRK has enough history to keep going forward for a while. But being a defining star is something else. I don’t mean this only in the box office sense. With age stars can become defining in other ways. SRK has yet to make any such transition. And the stakes are simply rising all the time.

He’s got far too much collateral to fall quickly, this is a slow decent. At his age the opportunity is bleak now. No one’s writing obituaries, I never did I just said for years the exaggeration on his stardom was clear, the timing similar around 2009. Since then he’s always been at the party but he’s just not hosting them anymore!

I even doubt this is a huge blip. With a big production to come next year he still has a film. I’d be far more worried if his mentors like Farah, Aditya or KJo started to desert him.

But I’ll always question a stars choices. The 80’s for Bachchan maybe the talent pool around him was still strong. But today the talent is weak. That BB2 destroyed records shows the general position of Hindi cinema.

SRK should cut the romantic act out period – it’s a genre for youth unless he turns it upside down and romances his age group. I doubt huge mileage in that game.

If he rode the top for give or take 15 years, it’ll take that much time IMO to erode and be out of the picture.

He’s not been at the top for a decade now. Not sure why so many think he’s been fighting for positions with Salman or Aamir. Only BOI peddling that one.

The idea Akshay is close is another good joke. His best is still sizeable junk below SRK’s.

I can talk for myself or my comment. We all know the type of movies Imtiaz Ali makes and only was waiting to see if has gone full mainstream with this one. Looks like he hasn’t and that seals the deal that it won’t be huge success. But I am confident that it will appeal to a segment of audience and they might have just have length issues in 2nd half and that’s about it.

Boxoffice success is different and personal liking is different. Personally, until I watch it, I won’t comment but with the reception from audience, it appears it is not going to work for majority.

However imtiaz has spilled that chance, second half is a bit drab and ending doesn’t elevate. Despite this the movie is immensely enjoyable for the moat part. A lot of srk analysis is happening here, even at 51 he ia the best we got in romance.. 22 years after ddlj.. Yes he has aged.. Doesn’t look the part but he still has the charm. I think he and Sallu are stuck in an image and it is far too late now to change that for them….SRK can do a Hirani film if worked out as a last ditch effort or a film with Mani or Shankar or Baahubali director…..to have a graceful exit as a solo hero…but that looks impossible for next 2-3 years as all these directors r busy….so? it will be a painful transition to character roles…..or just be a producer……but the star/actor SRK is already gone…..

      • I wouldn’t take this too far. He’s still a bona fide star, he’s still someone with a considerable draw, even a big one on the right day, he’s just been wasting his cultural capital. This weakens a star eventually. Bad choices hurt everyone at every level of stardom. But that doesn’t mean he needs to be a character or become a producer only. That’s too much! If I were him I’d take a year off, read a lot of scripts and think about things carefully. For example he could still do a very good romance. A more mature one with the right script. This whole DDLJ stuff has been beaten to death. As has the Punjabi humor (and music)! There are lots of other things too. If he keeps this up however he will be in serious trouble sooner or later. Ultimately he’s not Salman. Once Salman’s box office runs out he won’t be able to transition to anything else. He’s not that kind of star. Admittedly he’s stretched out this inning more than I thought he would but still there is an expiry date on these things. SRK will never be like Aamir but he does have a stable future if he can become more sensible about things.

Satyam, this is already happening. SRK hasn’t signed a new movie in 1.5 yrs now. He just has Anand Rai’s film (signed long back) on hand and hasn’t okayed any film after that. He’s gonna be free next Feb and he’s taking time to sign his next. It never happened before where he just has 1 movie on hand no other announcements. This is perfect setup for fresh scripts.

DZ kind of deal will give him 100 cr only….so he is between a rock and a hard thing now….he has to bow down and gradually bow out as a solo hero because young generation of viewers seem disinterested in this ageing superstar who has nothing new to offer……and aamir with his quality-products is surely making things difficult for the other two khans….akki is smart as he does 5 films a year and he knows that his range is 100-125 cr and he is ok ….but for SRK who has seen golden days as a superstar….this kind of failures at BO since last few years must be too much and he looks so tired and jaded…..and it is ridiculous that every film of his still has a reference to DDLJ….that itself shows that he has already succumbed to the fact that the films he is doing are nowhere near to DDLJ – it is a pity!

genre doesn’t matter man, just any good movie will do. It doesn’t matter if its a romantic one, CDI type, war movie, common man’s role or anything. The only way to come back is with strong scripts and not worry about genres.

For the outsiders, Hindi film industry aka Bollywood used to be known by the name of Shah Rukh Khan. Later, with the resurrection of Aamir and Salman Khan in the last one decade or so, Bollywood has started being called as the ‘industry of Khan Trio’. Sadly for SRK and his fans, it may soon be called ‘Khan Duo’ as his fame and stardom is depreciating from film after film.

Its hard for even movie buffs to tell the last true hit of SRK. Its Chennai Express, which released way back in 2013. In the last four years, SRK had 5 prime releases – Happy New Year, Dilwale, Fan, Raees and the latest, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. None of these films could justify his global stardom and ended up as huge disappointments for trade, fans and also the actor himself. Going by the early reviews and word of mouth, SRK’s today release ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ may end up as one of his biggest failures.

On the other hand, in the recent few years, Aamir and Salman have emerged as box office rulers. With films like Dangal, PK, 3 Idiots etc. Aamir has become the brand ambassador of content-rich films which also strike gold at box office. Salman has emerged as the darling of buyers and masses as he consistently scored box office hits despite criticism related to content.

Talking about future, Aamir has an interesting magnum opus, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ and Salman has a potential action blockbuster ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ in pipeline. SRK on the other hand has an experimental film titled ‘Dwarf’, where he is playing a dwarf.

SRK urgently needs to introspect his strategy and choice of films as his stardom is fading with each new release whereas his competitors, the young crop of actors and Southern magnum opuses are on the rise.

  60. It is a blasphemy to club Aamir with the likes of SRK or even Salman. The media does this because they are contemporaries and share the same surname. When did we have a thinking media when it comes to Bollywood? Fans do the same because they are plain dumb.

SRK and Salman are ‘Vanity Stars’. One found success in the romantic genre early on; other found it in masala genre much later. Both are plain dumbos and full of their stardom. ‘Vanity Stars’ are what they are, nothing more nothing less.

Aamir is a film-maker at heart and in his mind. A cut above the rest. Period.

    • Hey whatever works for them ! I have no problems with salman or srk doing their respective genres. Most stars are like this. You can’t single out these two. Most stars stick to genres that work for them. I’ll always prefer an Aamir film but then I’m also willing to watch a good genre film (I’d take a good masala film over anything else). The problem is salman doesn’t do any good ones. That’s a different debate. But the very thing that defines a star is genre. Aamir is unusual and I’m all for this but the major problem with the others isn’t that they’re not Aamir. It’s just that they’re doing poor stuff most of the time.

Doubt that will be the case here though again it will probably be a bigger success. On a related note and with the whole post-Dangal Aamir boom in China this might not be a bad film to follow up with. The reality TV deal is big everywhere and people face similar issues.

    • That’s actually a pretty insightful review.

It seems like a typical Imtiaz film to me – not completely mainstream. He always shows his characters wrestling with internal turmoil than any external circumstances, which doesn’t usually make for big hits. But I have liked all his films so far (Highway and Tamasha are probably my favorites), and don’t think this one will be too bad either. I personally feel critics are being quite harsh, just like with Tamasha.

Anyway when it comes to romances, it’s really slim pickings nowadays – but will take Imtiaz over Karan or Aditya any day.

      • Though judging from the reviews the problem might be that Imtiaz Ali succumbs to a Johar-like instinct in the second half. I’d also say this. I consider Imtiaz Ali grossly overrated. He has interesting moments sometimes but even his best romances are very modest films. I personally have a great weakness for Rockstar despite the flaws. But sticking to his pure romances he’s still never made anything remotely close to srk’s best from the 90s. I’d probably take Yes boss over all the Imtiaz Ali love stories. The 90s are now out of fashion but it’s not as if anything barely decent today is much better. And those films weren’t such a high bar anyway. I don’t see Imtiaz Ali as some cutting edge figure. And even When he’s tried something half-interesting he’s sold out more often than not. Incidentally I’d also take KHKN over all these latter day romances.

        • This is very obvious and a sell out unfortunately. I really liked Tamasha. LAK songs were good but JWM Kareena put me off. He might be overrated but I do think a film like Tamasha has different and relatable moments for generation X. I haven’t seen Rockstar in its fullest yet, but these 70-80 CR grossers suggest like Master says, quite a love or hate director.

Even within his films he’s like this.

        • Forgot about Tamasha. Yes I didn’t mind it myself. Could have been a much better film than it was but it was certainly ok. On the other hand this seems to be in the LAK kind of category. A film designed to succeed. Agreed on JWM as well. Kareena got on my nerves!

It was announced a few days back that Varun Dhawan and Shoojit Sircar have teamed up for a film. Titled as October, it is a romantic film with a slice of life angle.

Now the release date of the film has been announced. It will hit the screens on 1 June 2018. The film will go on the floors in October and will be shot in Delhi.

Talking about the film, Shoojit says it’s “not a love story but his take on love”. He says, “It’s again an out-of-the-box kind of story. We started working on this film’s idea, which came from a small newspaper clipping, right before Piku (2015),” says the film-maker adding that it’s “a very unusual, unconventional kind of a story” in the “slice-of-life and romance space”.

Shah Rukh’s Jab Harry Met Sejal released to several houseful shows today
For another film running in the same theatre pricing is comparatively low
People who have the money will not mind spending, says a trade analyst

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal released today and fans are booking tickets left, right and centre including in a New Delhi theatre, in which the cost of single ticket is Rs. 2,400. Yes, you read that right. One ticket at Ambience Director’s Cut, Gurugram, is priced Rs. 2,400 and a lower priced ticket in the same theatre is available at Rs. 1,200. Since the film released, the theatre ran several houseful shows. Meanwhile, on the same day for Mubrakan the theatre charges Rs. 1,800 and Rs. 1,600 depending on seating category. Speaking to mid-day, trade analyst Amod Mehra said: “The production cost of a film like Jab Harry Met Sejal is really high. So, to recover that cost, distributors tend to increase the rates.”

“There haven’t been any good films in the recent past, which would have motivated the audience to spend money. So, people who have the money will not mind spending a huge amount on this one,” Mr Mehra added.

Another trade analyst told mid-day: “Rs. 2400 plus food and conveyance is really high. But then, the advance booking shows that people who wish to spend so much, have bought the tickets. I can get a premium membership of Netflix at the same price and watch so much of content. In the end, it’s all about what you choose.”

  64. Jab Harry Met Sejal 1st Day Box Office Collection
    08/04/201767

Jab Harry Met Sejal 1st Day Box Office Collection: Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Jab Harry Met Sejal released today with a lot of fanfare. However, the hype and buzz among the general audience were missing. Still, a reasonable opening day was expected due to the star power of Shahrukh Khan. Check out Jab Harry Met Sejal collection report for the opening day.

Looking at the early trade trends, Jab Harry Met Sejal 1st day collection will be in the range of 16-17 crores. The morning shows suggested a 15 cr opening day but the film witnessed really good growth in the evening shows. Stay tuned for more updates.

JHMS started the day with a decent opening. The overall occupancy in the morning shows was in the range of 35%. As expected the opening was better in Delhi/NCR, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Multiplexes opened good and picked up really well especially in the evening shows as the occupancy was 60-65%. But it could not maintain the momentum in masses. Most of the major circuits like Mumbai, Gujarat, Rajasthan underperformed.

The film was super strong in West Bengal which is Shahrukh Khan’s strongest hold. Almost all of his recent films have opened good here irrespective of the genre. The lack of competition has helped Jab Harry Met Sejal collection in South belts. It is an urban romantic-comedy film so it was never going to open well in mass belts. Whatever the opening it has got is due to SRK. Otherwise, it could have been a washout in masses on the day 1 itself. The makers also played it smart by releasing the film in 3400 screens.

Jab the Harry Met Sejal 1st day collection is the 4th highest opening day of 2017. It is behind Bahubali 2, Raees and Tubelight. Overall this is a good opening for an urban film but not up to the standards of Shahrukh Khan. In fact, it is his lowest opener in recent years as the opening day will be lower than Raees, Fan and Dilwale.

The good news is that JHMS has shown good growth in the evening in multiplexes which is generally associated with such films. Now it has become a content driven film and will heavily rely on word of mouth. But the general response and reports are not encouraging. A big drop is expected in masses though the film was never meant for them. It will be the urban audience which will decide the fate of the film.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Does Well On Day One
    Saturday 05 August 2017 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jab Harry Met Sejal did well on day one with collections in the range of 16-17 crore nett. This is not a big number for a Shahrukh Khan starrer but when the content goes towards niche its about getting some sort of opening and for a film like Jab Harry Met Sejal which hardly appeals to around ten cities across India this is a big number. The film could have easily ended up below 15 crore nett as the audience is limited for these type of urban rom-coms. But the real battle starts now as the first day number is far bigger than the appeal of your content so can the film actually go upwards over the weekend and if so by how much.

The metros will help on Saturday but when a film like this is picking up 1.50 crore nett in Gujarat / Saurashtra and 85 lakhs nett in Rajasthan its really hard to see these places go up by any decent margins. The previous highest opening for this rom-com genre was Shandaaar at 11.71 crore nett and this is far above that. The film is the lowest opening day for a Shahrukh Khan starrer outside the even more niche Dear Zindagi. The difference is that films like Happy New Year, Dilwale and Raees irrespective of how successful they were finally had far more wider appeal than Jab Harry Met Sejal.

There performance is better in Overseas where this type of content has more takers. Gulf has already crossed $1.50 million even though Gulf had a late start on Thursday at most locations. If the rest of the circuits show the same trend it will probably emerge the biggest Hindi grosser in Overseas of the year till date.

  67. My thoughts:

Imtiaz Ali’s last release, Tamasha, is probably my favourite film of the past decade; it’s the only film I’ve seen three times at the cinema. So that makes his new offering, Jab Harry Met Sejal, all the more disappointing. The characters are just about plausible but the film isn’t. It’s hard to buy into the movie on any level, and the issue isn’t just about believability. If Imtiaz had made a Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani style, superficial-yet-very-watchable, candyfloss rom-com, that would be fine (JHMS operates at similarly limited depth), but here it’s difficult to maintain interest in what’s happening on-screen let alone believe it. And whilst Tamasha (and Highway for that matter) trod entirely new ground in terms of both the complexity of its characters and the way it wove the story (using the theme of storytelling itself) here the director serves up a film that is not nearly as entertaining as those it references. Shah Rukh is fine, bland for the most part, but not bad. Anushka, to her credit, bravely portrays a rather irritating character, and has probably never been less appealing on screen, but delivers some watchable moments. The songs are unmemorable; Rahman was the soul of Tamasha but Pritam brings nothing here, neither the angst of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil nor the verve of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. But the biggest disappointment in Jab Harry Met Sejal is that Imtiaz Ali is unlocatable.

  68. Back from JHMS. Won’t write much. Imtiaz Ali’s weakest film till date. Though will also say that critics are way too harsh, it is just fine a regular romantic movie but not deep enough as other Imtiaz’s movies. Full songs are just 3-4 and rest of them are just 1 to 1.5 mins long in background. That is nothing to worry and doesn’t impact the narrative. SRK is fine though I wish the commoner character of guide was part of a better film and he’s the only thing you carry out of the movie, nothing else. Anushka does well(esp with accent) but her character is not as well written as Srk’s. It is worth a watch for those who like slow romantic paced movies, it is not commercial or entertaining enough. Overall will wrap at 75 crores.

And i dont know what the criticisms are all about..i didnt find the film to be something seen before..or shah rukh doing a ddlj character. It is just a slow paced love story..which go forward in just conversations between the leads mainly. And where no deliberate attempt is made to have any additions to capture attention of audince. where the hero avoids or escape confrontations rather than beat up the villains. where he finds her ‘cute’ which irritates her, and her taunts of ‘high hopes’ irritates him. And when they part, which they both were claiming will be easy, they feel incomplete and had to find each other again.

If that is written in a book, it may be a best seller, somwhat Mills and boon’ish, but a makes a slow movie.

As for me, i loved the second half more, contraryt to most of the reviews.

I wouldnt complain shah rukh did this film, I would cherish the moments this film gave, some more romance my favorite actor portrayed on screen that I can carry with me.

      • The criticism is not doing DDLJ roles – it’s the inherent cues and references to the film. And if done appropriately ala Chennai Express train sequence it works. Otherwise it feels like self praise. I say the same about Dostana sequence where Priyanka’s surprise is to watch KKHH in a film produced by KJo!

Another example I liked was in HAHK where Prem receives a call from Suman – it’s just fleeting and nonchalant rather than ‘look at me I made MPK’.

    • In the worst case scenario, JHMS movie may fold up below 100 cr like Fan. Whether it does 75 c or 90 cr, will not matter as it is an expensive film. Might turn out to be an outright flop. OR it may sustain at lower levels and cross 100 cr. A flop at this point is not that worrying. But SRK should be worried that his loyal fan base is giving up on him so easily these days. That is an indication of impatience brewing due to his string of mediocre films that fans are not enjoying. This can cause a part of the fan base to move on, unless he quickly turns the tide. Even the opening numbers are going down.

The problem is that he has no backup at this point. His next is going to come as late as next december and will be yet another romcom, even if he plays a dwarf. SRK’s strength genre is no longer a happening genre in today’s times. And at this stage of his career it will be difficult to reinvent himself as a leading man. I am not sure how long he will be able to hang around as a vanity star, age is catching up. His ego and money (read RCE) wont allow him to transfer to character roles till the point his films open better than Akshay or the under-performing younger lot. But in desperately hanging on to his vanity and stardom, he is just wasting time.

And the key point is that his fan base is becoming restless. Neutral audience dont show up much on a working friday, yet the negativity has been high from the onset regarding a movie which is perhaps not that bad and is an average film.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who has been a former chairperson of the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), says the body should help and respect filmmakers rather than be a “villain” in their life.

Regarding the suggested 48 cuts in “Babumoshai Bandookbaaz” and criticism raised against CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, Anupam said here: “Criticism should not be personality oriented. I don’t think Pahlaj Nihalani is doing all that, but having said that, I feel censor board needs to re-look at themselves.”

“They are more and more coming across as people who know how to stop a film rather than how to facilitate the film. We live in the 21st century, so we can watch anything on internet. I feel there is a need of self-regulation.”

He added: “I feel the censor board should not act as a villain for films. Censor board’s existence is defined because of films, so I feel they should help and respect filmmakers. I have been censor board chairman for one year. There are rule books and guidelines, but (we are) seeing that anyone can interpret things in their own way and by following that, you can ban any release any film.”

“So, Shyam Benegal’s Committee report should be executed with immediate effect and let’s make films that we want to make.”

  73. Jab Harry Met Sejal Box Office Day 1 (1st Friday) – Early Estimates
To earn big at the box office the film needs to grow from here.
    By
    Koimoi.com Team –
    August 5, 2017

Jab Harry Met Sejal has completed its first day Box Office journey already and the film showed no swell since its morning and afternoon shows at the Domestic Box Office. As per early estimates, the film is looking for below average opening day collections!

The film has become Shah Rukh Khan’s lowest opener as a main lead. It’s lower than FAN which released on a partial holiday, Raees which clashed with Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil and almost all other SRK films in the last several years.

The movie had got a good opening with registering a good occupancy of 40% – 45% at the box office but going by the early estimates it seems that the film didnot grow by the end of the day. The movie has released in more than 3200 screens. The level of opening on Friday morning suggests a 18 crores start.

To earn big at the box office the film needs to grow from here, the trend has to be upward through the weekend and then on the Monday-public holiday. If the film doesn’t show growth on weekends and public holiday the film might turn out to be a flop affair at the box office.

  74. Box Office: Jab Harry Met Sejal takes an expectedly good opening of Rs. 17.25 crores* on Day 1
    By Joginder Tuteja
    , Aug 5, 2017 – 9:57 am IST

It was predicted in this column a few days back that Jab Harry Met Sejal would take an opening around Rs. 16-17 crore. Well, the collections were around this range as Rs. 17.25 crore* came in on Friday. These are in fact good numbers considering the fact that a) the film never seemed like the kind that had a universal appeal and would appeal to mass segments in the B & C centres and b) the industry is going through a phase where back to back disappointments are plaguing one and all.

Hence, to even have a number which is greater than Rs. 15 crore is still fair enough as it shows that there is still a segment of audiences in there that cares to step into theatres. Of course, the name Shah Rukh Khan stands for a lot more than someone whose film takes a Rs. 15-20 crore opening. However, when you make a choice to do a film like Jab Harry Met Sejal which has its own limitations on the paper itself, the results are expected to be in that zone as well.

Now let’s talk about what the future entails for the Imtiaz Ali directed film. The sad part is that from the critical acclaim perspective, the film has met with a huge thumbs down from majority. It is as simple as that – the film is being seen as one of the weakest love stories of Shah Rukh Khan. Even that would have been okay had the audience word of mouth been positive. However, there too lie many problems since by and large there are more voices of dissent than support.

When the feedback from the ‘aam junta’ turns out to be such, it becomes even more difficult for a film to hold on. This is where the challenge lies for Jab Harry Met Sejal as it would have to battle all these roadblocks and at least sustain well (if not grow much) over the weekend in order to have a shot at a reasonable lifetime total.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Jab Harry Met Sejal had a reasonable first day as it grossed 15.50 crore nett apprx on the first day. The film has only really managed to collect in metros with collections outside the five metros coming out low. A huge chunk of the collections have come in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Pune and Bangalore while the rest have hardly contributed. Even Punjab where there are big multiplexes is well below the mark outside Gurgaon which is basically NCR. The performance is very much like Tubelight with the opening day collections much higher than the appeal of the content and that film did not grow over the wekend and it could be same case here unless metros really push higher.

    >

The film is the lowest Shahrukh Khan opener of recent times as if we account for the holiday factor of Fan then the collections come out similar to that film. Just like with Salman Khan with Tubelight, these big stars can’t do films which have limited reach as when it comes to numbers you are depending on just star power and that is just a first day thing and even that will not be as it should. A Raees crossed 20 crore nett plus with a clash even though its was a poor film because it had reach. This does not have the reach which looked likely before the release as the director has a record of films which have limited reach and appreciation Now its about how or if the film can grow on Saturday as it will be its best chance because the film is only collecting in metros and thats a Saturday audience. Outside metros there is a good chance of drops of in many places.

      • Even if we go by BOI’s 15.5 cr day one number, the weekend should be around 45 cr, if we consider their is no growth. If one predicts that its going to fold up at 60 cr or even 75 cr from there onward, it will have to be an epic crash from monday (which is raksha bandhan holiday). Dont see it happening at this point.

But yes, from expecting 20 cr day one (which was a reasonable prediction considering everything), the 15 cr number is a downer. Looks like the poor WOM and negative reviews have hurt the film on day one itself. Maybe the apathy of SRK’s core fan base is one of the reason too – otherwise one would expect at least the fanbase to save the first day (like it happened with TL).

        Like

        • Tubelight first day was similar not better. Both will follow similar patterns it seems. The 20 CR opening would have happened if WOM was par but it’s not good at all. So the film has lost out from Day 1 itself.

Audiences remain unapologetic. Next will be interesting to see response to TEPK which has lost momentum – might be a good thing.

This will head for whatever Imtiaz Ali films finish at – 70-75 CR. A flop. But it sounds unfair to club it with Rockstar and Tamasha etc like BOI will do.

          Like

        • Didnt TL do 20 cr on opening day? JHMS has only 15 cr!

          Like

        • Yes but par for Tubelight was 25 CR not 20 CR! Tubelight was sold like a follow up to BB and got the widest release too. It’s trade expectations would have been 25 CR+.

          Like

        • The reality is both films were in trouble with poor initial teasers. The theatrical for JHMS seemed to have done the trick, music etc picked up – so quite possibly SRK has erosion on day 1, but Raees proves opposite.

I just think he’s doing uninteresting roles and films. He’s not exciting his audience as much and neutrals. On paper Imtiaz Ali minimally makes interesting films – here it appears he’s done ordinary regular stuff. In a way it’s harsh – he can’t win either way at the box office. I’m guessing reviews are harsh as with Tubelight but bigger stars will get some stick after Bahubali 2. This year might as well be called Bollywood went Tollywood temporarily until things settle back. Maybe Diwali or Xmas – the seasons for giving will change things.

Isn’t it a natural psychological reaction to disregard ‘normal’ when you’re treated to ‘spectacular’?

          Like

        • But this is SRK’s strength genre, whereas TL was not for Salman. Big difference. TL got to roughly 120 cr from its 20 cr day one (6X multiplier). A similar trend would mean 90 cr finish for JHMS. Ending at 70-75 cr would mean doing far worse than TL.

  76. Mubarakan Eighth Day Business

    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan fell badly on its eight day as collections were around 70-75% lower from from day one. This was always on the cards with the release of Jab Harry Met Sejal. Mubarakan will grow well on Saturday and Sunday but the Friday is so low that the growth will hardly translate into numbers. The film is probably looking at a finish of around 45-50 crore nett. The collections of the film till date are as follows

    First Week – 35,00,00,000

    Friday – 1,10,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 36,10,00,000

Lipstick Under My Burkha has done reasonably well though has not really gone through after the first week as a 40% drop in second week may look good but for this sort of very niche content which has some acceptance from the target audience it should hold better. The competition in metros from Jab Harry met Sejal has meant collections have gone down very badly in week three. Nevertheless the film is a plus commercially due to the low budget.

    Week One – 10,16,00,000

    Week Two – 6,00,00,000 apprx

Week Three – 20,00,000 apprx (Friday)

    TOTAL – 16,36,00,000

If the right material comes and he does his years of research it will work. Likewise Bhansali. Ali has sold out here to appease the audience – it’s backfired. Why couldn’t he make a compelling love story about a 50 year old man wooing a 20 something and the latter falling for it? Isn’t this a 50+ year old man’s dream? He has a great physique and is in great shape! whether dressed casually or in a suit he is looking much better than any of his contemporaries. anushka never matches up in that aspect… She is the well dressed, fashionable, modern girl and thats it. Excerpts

Speaking about the same, a source said, “While shooting in Ranautar, the actors had to travel for 103 kms each way every day. Relay security teams were posted every few kilometers to convey messages on walkie-talkies. The village itself was unique with inhabitants who drink only goat’s milk all their lives, with not a piece of grain, vegetables, or meat.”

The source added, “Transport, especially car transport was quite tough in the city of Jodhpur and relays of bouncers were set in place. The actors travelled in auto rickshaws, with Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta once getting into the wrong one in the throng of fans. Apart from this, the cast and crew battled extreme ends of the weather spectrum. The temperature in January when the shoot began was two degrees, and when it ended in March it was up to 38 degrees, with accompanying sandstorms. Director Milan Luthria got dirty looks from all his actors, but every time they saw the location they had driven so long to reach, they admitted it left them speechless.”

    Hope the effort pays.

Somehow I feel the big push downwards started from the way he over promoted a crap movie like OSO. He started losing trust of an average movie goer. And he just couldn’t follow up with a great film to win that trust back (CE may be entertaining but wasn’t a great film). Till then he was somehow hanging on it. Plus the movie buffs of 90s era which was his peak have all grown up now. Even if they like SRK now they aren’t the ones spending huge bucks for a film, specially if its not good enough. I think that his work in films between 1992 to 1995 (Deewana, Raju Ban gaya Gentleman, Baazigar, Darr, Kabhi haan Kabhi Naa, Anjaam and DDLJ) is his best work ever as an actor. Since then he never grew on me. Media really helped him sustain for so long at a high level and is still trying to do it. But facts don’t lie. At BO he is not a superstar anymore and IMO he hasn’t been for a long long time now.

        • Sometime back we were discussing the future of Khans and who will go out sooner. I agree that JHMS is the final nail in the coffin for SRK as far as superstardom goes. It has been a decline in the last 10 years – slower in the beginning but has picked up pace in the last few years with Dilwale, Fan, DZ, Raees and now JHMS. So SRK goes out first. I also doubt if he can make a comeback like AB.

Next will be Salman. When is the question. I think TZH will provide some answers. TL had exposed his incompetency to his core base and the industry overall is going through a bad phase. In such a scenario it will be interesting to see what TZH does. If it fails to do 300 cr with Christmas and sequel factors, then it may also be the beginning of the decline for him. And for Salman it is likely to be a quick fall rather than a slow one like we saw for SRK.

What’s common between Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi (2016), Maneesh Sharma’s Fan (2016) and Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, apart from the fact that Shah Rukh Khan starred in them? In all the films, the superstar worked with the respective directors for the first time in his career. Interestingly, the same holds true for his upcoming films too — Imtiaz Ali-directed Jab Harry Met Sejal and Aanand L Rai’s untitled next.

When Bollywood celebrities took a walk down memory lane with their fathers
Ask SRK about working with Imtiaz, and he says, “Main ek bahut badi baat bolne wala hoon (I am going to say a very big thing). [Till now], I have worked with some really nice directors but I can say that Imtiaz is like a modern-day Yash Chopra. I don’t think apart from Adi (Aditya Chopra) and Karan (Johar), who have learnt hands-on from Yashji, anyone else gets the same vibe (as Chopra’s films).”

Shah Rukh adds that he’s “doing a romantic film after a long time.” “In that sense, you can call it a pure love story,” says the actor. So, what makes Imtiaz stand out? “Be it his writing or the way he gets [the essence of] man-woman relationship in a very sweet manner, along with having a modern take on it, it’s very beautiful,” he says.

The Chennai Express (2013) actor says, sometimes, Imtiaz’s (films) can be “edgy also”. “But Jab Harry Met Sejal (JHMS) is not edgy (smiles); this one is funny and happy. Also, Imtiaz believes in songs, and so you will see the girl and boy breaking into a song in the streets. But he prefers more of [other cities in] Europe than just Switzerland (Chopra’s favourite shooting location). He has a lot of Yashji kind of qualities,” says Shah Rukh.

Adding that Imtiaz is also a “very nice writer and an equally good human being”, SRK adds that it was “great fun working with him”. “I wish I could do a film with Imtiaz every year in the genre that he wants because it’s very easy working with him. He also loves his actors the way Yashji would. Also, he is very gentle and kind, so it was great fun to team up with him,” he says.

Also, by now, it is well known that Shah Rukh has averted a clash with Akshay Kumar’s next film by moving JHMS’s release date to August 4. Does he think such avoidance of clashes is great for films? “Absolutely. Honestly speaking, for our film, we will have a great weekend with the Raksha Bandhan holiday. And, as I have already said, since JHMS is in the space of a long-running film, we will go into the holiday mood in the subsequent week too. But the other film will also get a free run,” says Shah Rukh. In fact, the superstar admits that it will help him talk more about his film “rather than competition, clashes, etc.”

While speaking to IANS, Ajay Kumar Pande, Vice President, Lilavati Hospital said: “He is stable, he has no fever, no breathlessness, he is conscious, he has eaten certain food prescribed by the doctors, his creatinine level is lower and his urine output is better, which is a good sign.”

The 94-year-old actor is being treated by cardiologist Nitin Gokhale and nephrologist Arun Shah at the hospital in Bandra West here in Mumbai.

“As of today, he is stable and it’s a good day,” added the official.

Just a day before, one of the attending team of doctors had said they were considering putting the actor on dialysis.

Asked about it, Pande told IANS: “We’re not thinking about that because his creatinine level is lower and urine output has improved. These are positive things.”

We wish Dilip Kumar a speedy recovery and hope he gets well soon.

Jab Harry Met Sejal struggled for growth on its second as collections outside the big cities fell. The film will collect around the 14-14.50 crore nett range on its second day and take its business to around 29.50 crore nett in two days.

The film could get close to its day one figures when final figures come in but there is little chance of a higher second day than the first day. This was always likely as films with limited appeal will find it tough to hold numbers at the level it collected on day one.

Jab Harry Met Sejal is trending very similar to Tubelight but at a lower level. That film also face a similar drop on day two and gain it was a case of an initial which just could not be held as the film did not hold appeal for the wider audience. Here it was sort of expected as the director Imtiaz Ali has a poor track record but with Tubelight the director had a Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Ek Tha Tiger behind him but went to the cinema he made before these films.

There is a partial holiday on Monday which will help collections on Monday and on Sunday evening but the film cant really survive in the long run at these levels with this second day trend.

    By Joginder Tuteja
    , Aug 6, 2017 – 10:41 am IST

The signs were right there on Friday itself when the collections didn’t really hit the roof. By the time the day came to a close the audience word of mouth had already started spreading. Since it veered mainly towards the lower side, the challenge was sustenance rather than growth on Saturday. This is exactly what happened as the footfalls stayed flat for the Imtiaz Ali directed romantic musical drama.

The film brought in Rs. 15 crore* more and this is definitely not the kind of number that Shah Rukh Khan would have had in mind for Day Two when he planned the release date as 4th August. That said, this is a reality now and the results are there to be seen as two day collections for the film are just Rs. 30.25 crore*. Now Shah Rukh Khan has indeed seen better days as just the Friday collections of his Chennai Express were Rs. 33.10

Of course, Imtiaz Ali would still get his biggest weekend ever as Tamasha had collected Rs. 38.23 crore and this number would be crossed today itself by the time the morning shows are through. Still, when you have Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma with you, a much better feat is expected, something which is not quite turning out to be the case for Jab Harry Met Sejal.

Until and unless today turns out to be really big for the film and it manages to cross the Rs. 20 crore mark, things would be really

    Box Office India Trade Network

Jab Harry Met Sejal had a fall in business on the second day of around 5% which pretty much seals its fate as the weekend will find it impossible to reach 50 crore nett which is too low for a Shahrukh Khan starrer. The collections on Saturday were in the 14-14.25 crore nett range. On the other hand the film could have dropped more on Saturday as it has a limited audience. Basically it will hold around these levels over the weekend due to Shahrukh Khan box office clout but then go down fast over the weekdays. There is a holiday for Raksha Bandhan on Monday but its very likely the film could see a noticeable drop despite the holiday.

    Friday – 15,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 14,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 28,25.00,000

The business is poor all over barring Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR and Bangalore as these places held or gained on Saturday while it dropped in most other places. The SRK stronghold Kolkata also saw a drop in collections. Mysore is performing best for the film.

It will be the first Shahrukh Khan starrer to go below 50 crore nett for the weekend since Don 2 in 2011. This is not counting the guest role in Dear Zindagi. Even a Fan managed to collect 52 crore nett plus and that film was probably a little more niche than this as was devoid of music as well.

When Aditya Chopra announced the much awaited Thugs of Hindostan, he managed to get a casting coup of sorts with Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan coming together for the first time in the film. Known to be a perfectionist like many of his contemporaries, Aditya however doesn’t seem to be satisfied with the way the film is shaping up and is currently in the process of making changes.

Readers must be aware that the film Thugs of Hindostan went on floor in Malta where they even shot for some major action sequences. In fact, now that the unit has returned to India, it seems that Yash Raj Films is not convinced with the way the film has been shot in the European country and is planning on reshooting the film. It is being said that these few action scenes will be reshot within YRF studios itself, although other details of the same aren’t available. It is also yet to be known as to which actors will be reshooting their portions.

  95. Jab Harry Met Sejal director Imtiaz Ali: I did not intend it to be a masterpiece

Imtiaz Ali has said that although according to many people Jab Harry Met Sejal is not an intellectual masterpiece, he did not intend it to be one. The Shah Rukh Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer film has drawn flak from reviewers who have called the flick mushy and a typical Shah Rukh Khan romance.

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has brushed aside criticism that his “touch” was missing from Jab Harry Met Sejal, saying he never wanted praise for himself while making the movie. “I am sure that a lot of people do not think that Harry Met Sejal is an intellectual masterpiece, but I did not intend it to be one,” Imtiaz Ali, a respected auteur known for his work in Jab We Met, Rockstar and Highway, told reporters at the film promotion on Saturday night.

The Shah Rukh Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer romcom has drawn flak from reviewers who have called the flick mushy and churned out from the same oven having typical Shah Rukh Khan romance and bereft of any storyline. Imtiaz, whose movies have a central theme of relationships and their vagaries, said he has never belonged to the “intelligent club” and always aimed at making this film for the masses.

“Some said you really need to be intelligent to understand an Imtiaz Ali film. For me that was a blow. I feel that I have never been part of any intelligent club. I wanted to make a very simple film with all my heart,” Imtiaz said. “I have not made this film for praise. You know I would like to be the director who can make different kinds of films. This one is made to reach the maximum number of people. Not to just get praise for myself.”

“I have been a veteran at this. When Tamasha released, lot of people praised the film but the film was not reaching the audience,” Imtiaz added, answering a question about the reviews Jab Harry Met Sejal has got since its Friday release.

Shah Rukh, who worked with Imtiaz for the first time, echoed his director, saying the magic of Jab Harry Met Sejal will take time to latch onto people. “I have not seen Imtiaz Ali’s previous work. I have always believed the film should go beyond the subject and create some magic. I also believe people come with preconceived notion that they have seen already,” the 51-year old actor said.

“I am speaking on his (Imtiaz Ali’s) behalf. I think sometimes the bigger feeling is to try something new. I have been in the business long enough to try a formula film and to try a film with no formula. Succeeded and failed at both. So, I understood that I can’t even try to recreate the magic. Take Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, for example. I have worked with Adi (director Aditya Chopra) again. Me and Anushka have (in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi). But there will never be another DDLJ,” Shah Rukh explained. “So every writer or director does not want to go back to the same magic because he/she does not know how it was created.”

“Some critics have talked about the magic being missing. I think he would not like to recreate that magic that he has done in the past. This one has a new magic. It’s a new trick. Maybe just the newness of it is going to take some time for people to understand the magic of the film. Working with Imtiaz was quite magical,” he added.

The two-hour-twentyfour-minute film revolves around the two characters and how Sejal (Anushka) bumps into tour-guide Harry (Shah Rukh) and together they set off visiting the exact same spots that she and her family visited — in the hope of finding her lost engagement ring.

  96. Top Ten Overseas First Weeks 2017 – Mubarakan Fair

Mubarakan had a low weekend in Overseas at around $1.25 million but it has held very well over the weekdays to go to $2.10 million. Normally films add around 35-40% of their weekend business over the week but here the film has added nearly 70%.

The numbers are still not what can be called good but the trend in all overseas markets is very good and could run for a few weeks even with Jab Harry Met Sejal and Toilet Ek Prem Katha giving competition. The film was best in Gulf which grossed close to $800k in the first week and should cross $1 million by the end of the second weekend. The top ten first week grossers in Overseas in 2017 are as follows.

Ok, a quick review of the weekend film release, Jab Harry Met Sejal, starring Anushka Sharma (who gets first billing ; congrats to producers Red Chilli Entertainment) — and Shahrukh Khan. Direction is by Imtiaz Ali , the road movie chap who debuted with Jab we Met and continued his journeys through Rockstar, Cocktail and Highway. The last was said to be a pretty intense film, so I need to check it out — especially as his latest proved poor. More on that anon.

If I had to title this review it would probably be– ‘ Seams and Threads showing’.

This is a haphazard patchwork quilt , put together in a manner that is not cohesive.A germ of an idea about a unsettled nice guy philanderer, a ditzy girl, some funny dialogues, a few ( very few) memorable scenes, a hilarious bunch of loser villains — and yet the whole does not add up. So, a lost opportunity of a film that is basically a ride through Europe, people by pretty people in pretty clothes; and songs that are mostly unmemorable, at least to me. Often a song gets bunged into a scene, simply because. Couldn’t help remembering the exquisite Dangal where every scene and song held the film together, seams never showing.

The basic premise of the story — it is so flimsy, even the film’s male lead keeps questioning it ! I guess the film team knew that the story base was shaky. Fine, all stories need not have a strong foundation. But get your act together after that! A girl forces a guide to help her find a lost engagement ring; the diamond family daughter has no problems doing the European tour again; she is loaded after all. Still…. the rest of the film just coasts along, hoping to find anchor somehow.

I am not one of those silly anti-SRK fans of Aamir. For SRK’s sake,I wanted this film to work ,for him especially. Looks tough. There were ten people in the audience.A noon show on a Saturday at a theatre in a town in NY state. Well, maybe there were more patrons for later shows. I hope so.

SRK acted fine,Anushka too; the latter especially got her Gujrati girl right. Loved the small joke where she and a Guju female relative in Mumbai wish each other JSK.☺️

Wish there was more to laugh about. This romcom had potential.

Some corrections from an FB friend:

    3 corrections.
    1. Imtiaz Ali’s debut movie as director was Socha Na Tha starring Abhay Deol and Aisha Takia.
    2. Cocktail was directed by Homi Adjania (who also directed Being Cyrus and Finding Fanny).
    3. After Highway, Imtiaz Ali directed another movie before he directed Jab Harry Met Sejal. That movie was Tamasha starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

I hope you didn’t mind me correcting you in these points.

  98. Watched it – very underwhelming. SRK and Anushka were actually pretty good but the content is just too simplistic and there is basically no plot, just an excuse for a whirlwind tour of Europe. Definitely Imtiaz’s worst film.

It’s going to be an uphill task for SRK to make any sort of comeback at this point. SRK needs a super strong script, basically an Aamir kind of film, that appeals both commercially and critically.

Also the Romance genre itself is way past its sell date. YJHD was a major exception because it had all the other fun trappings – big dance numbers, family weddings, lots of comedy etc. It was basically a full-on Barjatya-Johar style commercial film, the kind even Johar is not making anymore.

      • A Lamhe kind of deal wouldn’t have been a bad idea for him. Probably would have worked better today. Even on the Yashraj terrain there are opportunities to ‘mature’. Aditya Chopra and Johar don’t provide these but SRK could have learned some of this stuff along the way. Then again even the greatest stars are usually pretty poor at these points in their career. SRK is the rule not the exception in this regard.

Badri Ki Dulhania was actually a fun film that certainly fits into the romance genre. The fact of the matter is SRK is just too old now to be featured as the main lead in these kinds of films. And mature love stories have historically had limited appeal with the audience. So I don’t agree that romance genre is past sell date…I think it has evolved and evolved for the better IMO.

Also was kind of curious about this movie and maybe watch it but now just have no desire to watch it; especially if I keep seeing the words ‘simplistic’ and ‘superficial’ related to this movie….these terms have haunted the YashRaj/Kjo brands and looks like now Imtiaz Ali caught it.

    Q. SRK’s next is again a love story and it seems love stories never really hold the appeal to cross 200cr in india doesn’t matter who stars in it. So, is the fate sealed again?

    A. His next film is on shaky grounds now. For several reasons. One, SRK may not be able to hold on to the Christmas weekend now. When he averted the ‘JHMS’ clash with ‘Toilet:EPK’, the wrong signal went out that unlike the Shah Rukh of before, he is willing to let someone else take the bigger weekend. Now, with ‘JHMS’ likely to fall well short of the 100 crore mark, it’s almost certain that many would’ve already started eyeing the Christmas 2018 weekend. That’s how its always been in the industry, every producer would want the best weekend for his films.

Two, there’s going to be tremendous negativity around the SRK-Anushka jodi now. There’s anger amongst the audience against ‘JHMS’ and the same on-screen couple is repeating in the very next film – which also happens to be about romance. And three, the budget is very high. All these factors combined will make the Dwarf film the riskiest of 2018. Aanand L Rai will have to deliver a classic, anything less and the movie will be in big trouble. The only other positive is, there’s a good gap after ‘JHMS’. So the anticipation to watch Shah Rukh on the big screen could increase by fall of 2018.

    Q. What is the total landing cost of Jab Harry Met Sejal?

    A. The film has to recover 118 crore share from Worldwide business. So even if we assume it does 40 crore share from overseas, it has to collect upwards of 150 crore net in India to break-even. It won’t even collect half of that.

    Q. What is your expectations from SRK – Anand film ?
    A. Not much for now. Let’s wait and see how it shapes up.

“The problem of Confederate can’t be redeemed by production values, crisp writing, or even complicated characters. That is not because its conceivers are personally racist, or seek to create a show that endorses slavery. Far from it, I suspect. Indeed, the creators have said that their hope is to use science fiction to “show us how this history is still with us in a way no strictly realistic drama ever could.” And that really is the problem. African Americans do not need science-fiction, or really any fiction, to tell them that that “history is still with us.” It’s right outside our door. It’s in our politics. It’s on our networks. And Confederate is not immune. The show’s very operating premise, the fact that it roots itself in a long white tradition of imagining away emancipation, leaves one wondering how “lost” the Lost Cause really was.”

Mubarakan managed to show growth over the weekend after dropping on its eighth day. This was likely as the film jumped well on Saturday and Sunday last week. The drop for the second weekend is 72% which is not too bad considering competition from a Shahrukh Khan film. It is basically holding collections at low levels but not really going anywhere. Mubarakan stands at around 41 crore nett in ten days and with a holiday today for Raksha Bandhan it has a chance of another decent number coming. Overall it will be looking around a 50 crore nett total or maybe can edge past it. Half Girlfriend grossed 52.25 crore nett and that is looking best case scenario here. The collections of Mubarakan till date are as follows

    Box Office India Trade Network

Jab Harry Met Sejal grossed 44 crore nett over its first weekend. The total is a fair number but well below expectations of a Shahrukh Khan starrer. Its even beaten the lifetime figures of most recent films in the weekend but still its a low number and the trend is poor as day one remains the best day. This was going to be a possibility as the way the director narrates stories it is very niche. The storytelling as per his past films is very poor and then when you open at 15 crore nett it means you get a large audience which will just not relate with this type of storytelling.

The only way out was if the metros went crazy over the film then you have a shot at 125 crore nett (Barfi! till date is biggest at 105 crore nett for a primarily metro film) but this did not happen. The weekend collections of Jab Harry Met Sejal are as follows

    Friday – 15,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 14,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 14,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 44,00,00,000

The business is good in the metros over the three days but even there the growth is not what it should have been over the weekend. The film has fared poorly in East Punjab despite the presence of many high end multiplexes and even West Bengal which is a Shahrukh Khan dominated circuit has not really performed with around 2.50 crore nett. Mumbai grossed around 14 crore nett while Delhi / UP was 8.50 crore nett. Comparatively Mysore was best at 3.25 crore nett apprx.

  110. National Award winner and popularly known for directing Marathi blockbuster ‘Sairat’, Nagraj Manjule is all set to debut into Bollywood now. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the director is working on a script to make his Bollywood debut and has approached Amitabh Bachchan for a role.

Nagraj is debuting in Bollywood with a social drama that will feature Amitabh Bachchan as a patriarch with shades of grey. Reportedly, Nagraj had the concept ready for a while and had planned it as a Marathi film, but after ‘Sairat’, he wanted to revisit the story in Hindi. “Nagraj worked on it for a year-and-a-half before taking the script to Bachchan in January. The project was locked soon after,“ reveals a source in the report, adding that the film is expected to roll later this year.

  111. It’s crashed today as a couple of sources have reported. Forget 70 CR probably even now. Krish’s 60 CR is the first target now. This will probably be in Dear Zindagi range, complete rejection in SRK’s strongest genre. I’m sure they’ve understood this early and averted the clash. That if true is a smart move.

    • So, lets see how big a disaster it is going to be. The weekend is 45-46 cr only. If it trends like Jagga Jasoos (55 cr total from 33 cr weekend), it will get to 75 cr. If it trends like Tubelight (120 cr total from 65 cr weekend), it should get to 85 cr total.

        • I haven’t. Unfortunately Tamil movies usually play very far from where I am. Except on the exceptional day (Ratnam, Shankar). I was lucky enough to catch both their recent films this way. In the past I have sometimes done the distance but again only for a Ratnam or Vikram film. I wouldn’t mind doing it for this one but can’t at the moment for certain reasons.

  113. Good thing about Jab Harry met Sejal is that it’s like by SRK core fans. Hence the movie is not crashing. It will held at 7 Cr level.
Problem is that non SRK core fans (incl those who like SRK but not a fan of any star) is not showing tolerance the way they did to say Jab Tak Hai Jaan or Happy New Year.

Even today a movie like Rab Ne will be a hit but would not probably get a good WoM the way it got when it released.

This is quite remarkable as a movie like Jab Harry…could have been an easy 100Cr+ an year ago. What really changed – Baahubali 2?

One really should write about “Baahubali 2 and its humongous impact on Bollywood movie goers” than an essay on SRK’s stardom via-a-vis his contemporaries. This is because the latter is the most relevant phenomenon that happened since last 25 years after HAHK.

So a movie like Tubelight or Jab Harry has no reason to be sold so high and at par with Baahubali 2 when its product cost is not event one tenth. This is quite evident now and will lead to correction in selling price.

What is shocking to me is despite knowing this, Toilet’s theatrical rights have been sold at 53 Cr All India when Akshay himself said it cost 18 Cr. This means the movie has to be biggest Akki hit…i mean are we serious here or does Bollywood has lots of black money to play around?

I am looking forward to see Toilet but don’t think it can come close to 100 Cr.

So what i can see, why dont sub-distributors see?

    • Thats what I find astounding..A movie like Jab tak hia jaan was stupid and pointless..Katrina was just plain emotionless and SRk wasnt comfortable in that role of a younger man. Compared to that, JHMS is much better..and shud have fared better.

What’s the problem? Avtually I think a part is played by social media also..The amount of hate you see on there. and not sure if each of them have seen the movie also, bcos such is the number of hate messages, if all of them checked out the movie in these three days, it shud have had a bigger total, imo. So many of these about ‘how I suffered through JHMS’ cud be fake. Is this purposeful, is this organised, no idea. But what is true is that it is influencing a lot of people. make them drop plans for the movie.

One thing is true in India recent times..the media is managed and the social media is manufactured. Shahrukh Khan’s so called descent in recent times coincides with the rise of the right wing, whose leaders at various time has targeted the actor. There is a talk in the air, as well as various accounts of it, including ‘I am a Troll’ book on the organised, paid army maintained by the ruling front. These cyber forces are said to have been used to give bad ratings lo books by people like Barkha Dutt, Rana Ayyub etc in the Amazon platform recently. In kerala, when the actor Dilip was arrested recently, suddenly suport for him started pouring out on social media, and it was later found out that a firm was hired by the actor’s side to come out with a support campaign, bully people on social media and even constantly call channel offices accusing them of escesssively covering the event.

Now this doesnt excuse anything, but the disproportionate amount of hate just makes me wonder. More than the power of common man, the line shud be, ‘you can’t underestimate the power of social media’ nowadays..

    • Naveen, TEPK was sold at very normal prices but once the trailor came in and the news of tax exemption filtered in, the movie was resold for a price of 53cr + GST…It needs like 150 crs to break even now…Not sure why this was done…I cant recollect any instances of a movie being resold after an initial sale….

  114. I am old-fashioned about relationships, says Shah Rukh Khan

    Aug 07, 2017 | 14:11 IST | by Times Now, Agencies

I am old-fashioned about relationships, says Shah Rukh Khan
Relationships, nowadays, are considerably practical but Shah Rukh Khan believes in the old-fashioned, unreasonable love.

“What does a relationship mean? It appears that these days relationships are based on practical considerations. You should love unreasonably. Don’t you love your children without any reason?” Shah Rukh said.

“However, in the present age where everyone has so less time, I might be called old-fashioned,” Shah Rukh added.

Shah Rukh’s new film Jab Harry Met Sejal, directed by Imtiaz Ali, released on Friday to mixed reviews.

“I have not watched any of Imtiaz’s previous films. But you are right, a film should go beyond the subject and create magic. But again speaking on his (Imtiaz) behalf, I think one should always try something new. And I think it is a wonderful film,” Shah Rukh said.
Shah Rukh has also experimented with films such as Fan and Raees.

“I have tried formula films. But sometime back I understood that I can’t keep recreating the same magic,” Shah Rukh said.

Shah Rukh Khan is currently busy filming Aanand L Rai’s film, which also stars Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.
