I like this trailer. Its energetic and well-cut, and thankfully not as crass as I expected (given the subject). It has been some evolution for Akshay from those mindless comedy films to this kind of comedy with layered social message. Almost seems like a romcom in a small town backdrop.
I agree with BOI’s claim that this might work well in both city plexes and in massy belts (the rest of their rant is meaningless). Open defecation is a big problem in India and its good that they have made an entertainer out of it.
With the BJP machinery getting behind it (tax free status and free promotion), solo release and relevant message (no toilet no bride) – this might end up as a 150+ cr movie for Akshay, instead of his regular 100-125 cr fares.
Will catch this in theater.

‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’: A Satire on Love and Open Defecation
The Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet Ek Prem Katha is a rare take on love, one that truly has a larger message. If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, this film’s trailer suggests that you can win a woman’s heart by building a toilet in your house.
While the film looks like an interesting mix of light-hearted jokes, toilet humour and intense drama, there’s something about the story that also appeals to the urban elite, who’ve always toilets for granted.
Akshay Kumar plays Keshav, a young man who can’t wait to get a wife. But once he falls in love with and marries Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), not having a toilet in the house becomes the crux of their relationship. In fact, Jaya leaves him for it too! Keshav then takes up the cause of open defecation and the dignity of a woman being put on display. Bhumi Pednekar, as the headstrong Jaya, adds a feminist touch to the film and shouts out loud about women having to work harder for everything, as compared to men, including having the space to defecate.
Toilet – Ek Prem Katha is a satirical take on the battle against the age old tradition of open defecation in the country. From the panchayat to the sanitation department, from the role of the government to the superstitions of the villagers, from scams to the ethos, from first love to a matured romance, this Akshay Kumar starrer looks like a hard hitting entertainer. The film also boasts of a talented supporting cast- Divyendu Sharma, Sudhir Pandey, Shubha Khote and Anupam Kher.
The Shree Narayan Singh film will hit theatres on Independence Day this year.

Good edition in Akki’s 100 cr hit list – may do 200 also with all the reasons Marcus has mentioned above – i will give it a miss though and may catch up later on a dvd – nothing really exciting here – very relevant subject no doubt but needed solid script – entire movie has been revealed in these 3 mins…..

200 cr expectation? The lifetime predictions from the trade sites are well below 150 cr (except BOI hyping it up as a Solid Hindi film). This is a low budget film, so even 100 cr would be a big deal. It will be nice if it can reach out to a larger audience and do more.
On the other hand distribution price for JHMS is 125 cr! That film will need 200 cr to avoid distributor losses.

Not talking of economics but general expectations which has become a bit high since last couple of weeks….We need to remember this will probably get tax exemption and will also be a solo release over a long weekend now….Doing 100 crs with all those advantages is a bit waste of the long weekend…The write up in BOI is in sync with the expectations of the trade..
Similarly the expectation for JHWS would be north of 250 crs for sure now that there is no clash at least in the first week…

Fantastic trailer, even with the concept it looks like a proper commercial movie. Reminded me of Dum Laga ke Haisha which I liked as well. It’ll surely do great IMO!!

Hype comes later, I saw it during 1st weekend itself. I liked it
and thought it will flop as well but it got great reviews and went onto do 30 crores lifetime and also won “National Award for Best Hindi film”. At least I have some company, you guys have nothing besides your opinion calling it overhyped.

DLKH is a lovely film…I must have seen it half a dozen times now…Infact for a group gettogether of families comprising primarily North Indians , we did a group screening of the movie and it was thoroughly enjoyed…

I think open defecation is a v relevant issue in India and we tend to avoid talking about it because the subject is disgusting. Making an entertaining film on the topic is a good attempt. The effort should be appreciated (whether or not one likes this trailer).
BJP will hype this because it suits their agenda and media will play along. But the paying public will not show up for the film unless they find good entertainment for their money. So the movie will work only if it is good. Akshay’s films dont have v widespread reach, so it will be interesting to see how far this will go even with all the factors considered.
If this movie works though, it will have a high chance of winning National Awards next year. But the more important thing is whether it can inspire people to build toilets in their home. That is one mindset that is not easy to change – an entertaining movie or not.
But anyways, I am glad this movie is being made (leaving aside the politics) and personally liked the trailer. Going by the response in the media and the internet, it seems to have garnered good reaction in general.
Of all the upcoming movies in the next few months – Tubelight, Jagga Jasoos, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, Secret Superstar and Golmaal Again – I am looking forward to TEPK and SS the most at this point. Hope they entertain us while talking about serious social issues and do well at BO.

Because of population explosion, people move out and settle in bigger cities for livlihood. If they are lucky, they will get a slum otherwise they will sleep on footpaths.They use railway tracks, roadsides for morning oblutions. The public toilets are so filthy that these people prefer open spaces. Lack of water, lack of maintenance will make even toilets a nightmare. While travelling by train, I see men, women and children answering calls of nature without any hesitation. It is not a small town or rural problem as media makes it out to be. It is there even around metros.
In Kashmir, they use snow to cover up and in desert areas, they use sand. Big trees are most favourite spots. And there will be pigs waiting for their dinner!
If it is dry one, the services of cleaners are used and thus nightsoil carrying comes into play.

Not sure about trailer but hope the film works and more importantly mindsets change. This is a huge detractor of tourism, it’s quite basic. I remember flying into Bombay once and seeing the water banks full of people, it’s not only disgusting but unhealthy not just for people but animals too. I know people who are turned off so much that they would not return back to India. That is a shame.
It baffled me for a while but just understand it’s a lack of education, lack of maintenance. But the latter is a consequence of the former. I noticed places where there were toilets but people didn’t know how to use them.

Jayshah: Good you reminded me about tourism. I know a cousin who married this white female from UK and she had never visited India. She was so adamant of seeing the India via the long train journey instead of flight. By the end of train journey she was disgusted and she said all she saw was folks near the railway tracks doing their daily business. To her shock, everyone who sees her kept waving at her even that time. They didn’t have any shyness doing that and kept waving looking directly in her eyes. It is not one place or one location but all throughout the India and folks did the same thing(maybe seeing white lady). Till now, its her worst memory about India and she won’t forget it ever.

It’s a huge deterrent. Poor hygiene in general, plus visibility of it will turn away many. Barring fertile lands (which can be attained anyway by manure sacks) there is not a single benefit to anyway.

Never knew this kind of issue exist in India … I mean I know open defecation is an issue , but I always thought those are homeless or poor people … but never knew some of them do in open because they believe toilet and Tulsi can’t co-exist together.

Most non-urban areas the worldover do not have gutter systems where sewage is directly piped out to the local treatment plant. Underground Septic tanks are maintained everywhere, and there are waste transportation services availed to empty those septic tanks. However in India, many people cannot reconcile with the concept of Septic Tanks, ie, they believe the home is a temple and its premises should not be having an underground tank full of crap.
Back in the 90s, all newly arrived Desis would gloat about the greatness of india, only to be reminded by Americans of all the shit that rots on Indian streets. It is truely embarrassing that such an educated country could not overcome such ancient mindsets Otherwise the investment required to build a proper septic tank and functioning toilets in the house is not at a problem.
So in India, it is not just an issue of the poor who have no access to toilets. Its also a mindset issue, which Modi highlighted from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Wonder why Congis never ever bothered.

Yes, that Tulsi and toilet bit is exaggerated to make some impact. Its mostly have been due to poverty and homeless.
Trailer was decent and massy though. Definitely have the potential to become Akk’s biggest grosser.

Yakuza: How can you not know of this huge problem? It is not some 5, 10% but almost half the country. It can’t be only coz of poor people, it has to be of some mindsets as well. Its a such a huge problem when more than 45 to 50% of India does this open defecation and for this alone this movie needs to be tax-free and encouraged most people in rural areas watch it for with minimum costs. Cities they can keep tax.

Even in the urban slums there is a mindset problem. The urban poor buys TV sets, maintains satellite connections, expensive smart phones with data connection and even indulges in designer clothes. But they will not invest in toilets nor maintain them. Entertainment is more important to them than a healthy lifestyle.

Slums are not organised. At the most they are tent like structures with asbestos roofs and are on uneven grounds and they are illegal. Hence toilet constructions are ruled out because any time they can be demolished or renovated.
In villages they do it in nearby jungles or farms which is dangerous as tigers, leopards can easily attack them and attacked them.
In some independent homes, they construct toilets like outhouses so that the homes are clean!
Toilets inside homes, inside bedrooms were unacceptable for many Indians until some years back.
The concept of toilet paper is still made fun of here. Abroad I have seen Indian homes with plastic mugs in their bathrooms!
Finally I dont understand how one lota of water is sufficient to cleanup!

Well..as a kid, I have done it in my village khet/jungle. There was toilet for women folk but not for men! We certainly were not poor based on village standards. Open defecation was not considered bad and most of it was turning into manure for farm land and this practice probably has been there for ages. I haven’t been in my village for long time to tell current situation.
I think we Indians, don’t keep our toilets clean. The goal is to get things done quickly and come out. Having lived in US, I believe restrooms/toilets should be most clean and dry place in house. Fortunately our airports have improved but I still see many people don’t know how to use it.

Even after the clash has been averted, there seems to be a lot of bad blood between Akshay fans and SRK fans all over the net, be it on social media or general movie forums.
Being not invested in either of the stars, I am finding it quite ironical at how the career has panned out for these two stars. Akshay at 49, is trying his best to come out of his mindless comedy genre and move on to socially relevant topics. Whereas SRK at 51, is trying his best to get back his lost glory in his strength romcom genre. While one is trying to progress forward, the other wants to regress back. If luck really favors the brave, then Akshay should win this battle in August:

I am not too sure here as the humor is not palatable to everyone and can easily turn to disgust if not done right. I remember vividly my female company walking out of Delhi Belly within 10 mins of screening the minute Vijay Raaj opens that package with some stool sample….so let us see how it pans out eventually and I don’t see huge grosser here as some are predicting. In the worse case scenario they needed to get an attractive / sexier female to offset some of the bad vibes originating out of toilet humor. The thought of Kangana or Deepika heading to fields early in the morning to do their business would be alluring somewhat and may get the multiplex going.…
Unless JHMS is extremely bad with poor wom, it will still remain 1st choice for moviegoers on 11th August. So Akshay is on somewhat sticky grounds here.

Still Delhi Belly managed to do well at its time and its business was mainly multiplex driven. I am not a fan of that movie.
On the other hand, Piku did well at multiplexes when it got the toilet humor rightly done. I personally felt the scatological stuff was overdone and was not that necessary in the narrative. Had they invested a bit more on the Irfan-Deepika romantic angle, the film may have done better.
Similarly I feel they need to get the small-town love story right in TEPK to pull this off in a big way.

Delhi Belly pulled 80% of its gross thru that blockbuster Bhaag D.K. Bose which was not only catchy but well picturised and offered more promise than the movie could deliver…… it was a flat movie.

You mean DB made almost 45 Crores solely on the basis of DKBose song?? Then going by your theory, Dabang was able to make around 110 Crores out of its 140 due to “Munni badnam hui” as film was flat & had nothing besides the song i mentioned??

Marcus I feel Akshay is far ahead of SRK at the moment on just the wide range of genre he is attempting and more importantly getting accepted too. SRK fooled around in the last few years with his choices and now paying the price and unable to reinvent or find his slot. He is also under pressure to get a big one to challenge aamir/salman as just limiting himself within akshay’s threshold of 130-150cr is not enough. However movie trends change and so do the stars fortune. He is very much part of the game and needs to show maturity on screen and do a role with more sophistication / elegance.
As per trends there is a vacant slot for a really nice romantic meaty blockbuster and since the younger crowd is unable to take advantage of their boyhood, it may still come from one of these old-timers.

I agree that a well done romcom has immense potential in Indian BO and also in the NRI market. But seriously I doubt if Imtiaz Ali is the director who can deliver it. Even Jab We Met was not a v high grosser and was limited to multiplexes. And a rehash of the same may or may not work, who knows.
After YJHD, Ranbir was in the best position to deliver a few meaty romcoms which could have done v well at BO. Amongst the current crop of actors he is best suited for the chick-flicks. But he took his experimental stuff too seriously for his own good.

We have a decent trailer and the media roar is already deafening, along with all the noise in social media. Poems are being written how Akshay has turned into a social messiah and upstaged the Khans (including Aamir). If this turns out to be a hit then one can imagine what the uproar that is going to come.
Akshay has done v well to make his films ideologically tuned with the government agenda. With Padman to follow this, he maybe carefully constructing his own media narrative. There is already talks of him joining politics.

Two line summaries of such films give away the the film in the trailers themselves. And they masquerade as great films.

Anything more than 100 Cr can be called very good here. Epic is ruled out as that’s over 200Cr and for that Akshay has to do only 2 films an year.
I think following are the BO equivalents –
400 Cr with one movies in 2 years = 300 cr with two movies in 2 years = 250 Cr with one movie every year = 200 Cr with two movies every year = 150 Cr with 3 movies every year = 100 Cr with 4 movies every year
Of course all should be profitable as a 100 Cr movie in several cases need not be profitable.

Shows once again why the film industry, or any other for that matter, is replete with hypocrites. A while back, Akki came up with a video that lambasted molestors and people dictating what women should wear. And months down the late, he comes up with a song celebrating the stalking of women.

Reports are that Toilet has been resold to distributors after tax cuts all over India and now it needs minimum 150 for it to be a HIT. Earlier even 100 crs would have made it hit now it needs 150 crs.

IF true, this is poor economics for the film. The budget here is only 18 cr. Why is it being sold at such high prices? The producers can anyways make money from ancillary rights.
It should have been sold such that it becomes a clean hit/superhit at 80-90 cr. In the best case scenario, it will do 100-110 cr. Not sure what the producers have been smoking here.

Indicine has also posted now at 143cr just to recover costs. It has to do over 160 crs for a HIT tag.
