Satyam on Shahrukh Khan and his contemporaries

the comment was originally in the box office thread, some discussion followed

On SRK while those who don’t like him can get a bit too dismissive those who like him are also often as divorced from reality. I’ll recap things a bit:

There’s a difference between a declining top star and a much smaller one. A declining top star can still count on his history with the audiences. Moreso in certain genres. Beyond this a declining star can, especially in this day and age of the Hollywood-like production, put together subjects in different genres that excite a large part of his audience or at least an important cross-section of it. A top star even in decline can also start poaching on other dominant genres of the day and get some traction that way. All of this is possible because the star has built up enough cultural capital over time. Even rapidly declining top stars don’t suddenly fade. Or this really happened only once on Bollywood. This was Rajesh Khanna’s dramatic decline (to match his meteoric, really seminal rise) but here he lost out to an even greater force called Amitabh Bachchan. Then there were other historical factors in play as well. But this is hardly the norm. Usually top stars can hang around for a while. Hey, even less than top stars can extend their life quite a bit!

In some sense (I’ve been saying this for long) the last time one could say SRK was truly on top was 2004. He had MHN and VZ that year, Swades was a critical success if not a commercial one. In 2005 Paheli didn’t work, the big grossers were BnB and No Entry. In 2006 KANK fizzled out after a big start, Don was always tepid, meanwhile Aamir had Fanaa and RDB,Hhrithik had Krrish and D2. In ’07 SRK nonetheless had a very strong year with OSO and CDI. Unfortunately he couldn’t build on it. In 2008 RNBDJ was fine but completely swamped by Ghajini in every sense imaginable. After this everyone knows the history. Every single film SRK did in every conceivable kind of genre, at every conceivable end of the production spectrum either failed or completely underperformed. From Don2 to JTHJ to HNY to Ra One to MNIK to Dilwale to Raees to Fan to DZ. One can’t say he hasn’t tried! Even counting from 2007 that’s a decade! The only important exception of course is CE. That was 4 years ago and he’s had several releases since.

But in one sense this history isn’t strange when it comes to SRK. Because this is the way he was even his peak years. Then too he tried other stuff but beyond Yashraj/Johar almost nothing ever worked (though a couple of rom-coms here and there did decently enough). In other words even at his peak he was never the Salman kind of star let alone the Aamir kind. Where most of your films work one way or the other and even when you underperform you get to a very high gross. Put differently Salman can have a Jai Ho here, a Tubelight there (though of course this is a huge failure, much moreso than Jai Ho) as long as he mostly has films like Sultan or Bajrangi or Kick etc and where even a failure like the Barjatya film does 200. If Salman suddenly started producing Tubelight-like results 50% of the time he would still probably be doing better than everyone else (barring Aamir) but he would be in decline. In any case SRK has struggled after the age of 40. It’s his bad luck that his two most immediate peers have had their best careers in the same period.

Decline doesn’t mean that people stop showing up for a star. That’s absurd. But it starts affecting your standing. So even as he was failing SRK could mostly get good or strong (and sometimes outstanding) initials. Ironically his romance initials have been relatively weak for some time. RNBDJ’s initial was nothing extraordinary, all factors considered. JTHJ was always lukewarm, now looks like the current film will be the same or worse. CE again is the only exception but this with a director who was getting hits with everyone and with an actress who was going through her hottest phase. Still there are some very strong opening day numbers in there from Ra 1 to HNY. But in all the recent releases I’d say that even the initial has been affected. Dilwale had a weak one, JHMS will almost certainly have it. Raees, Fan hardly his strongest initials. Ultimately we can play games and talk about competition and screen counts and what not. When something happens for such a long period of time the pattern becomes obvious. For the fans though it’s always about the ‘next one’. But notice how hard it becomes to get that ‘next one’. Since 2004 he’s had top grossers twice. Once 10 years ago, once 4 years ago and neither one was the top grosser in any defining sense (either not the topmost grosser in that general period or so because of inflation and soon overtaken by a huge margin). Even this would be acceptable if he could do it regularly. He’s had many high profile releases, he’s marketed them to death and he’s not had the desired results. Even his overseas dominance was completely lost in this period.

Is he still an important star? Sure! I’m not one of those who thinks Akshay is getting ahead of him. That’s never going to happen. All of Akshay’s hits prove this. However staying ahead of Akshay could hardly be the only game for SRK given all of his ‘royal’ claims in the past. And if he keeps this up he could still fall further. Akshay has at least stabilized himself. In any case a top star’s competition is with his past history and certainly with his immediate peers. It’s not about ‘hey at least I’m still better than most of the other stars’!

From ’88 (when he returned from a two year break) to ’92 Bachchan (when he left again for 5 years) was easily the top star in terms of initials. There was no one else even close. Similarly some of the final grosses were still remarkable on the failures or underperformers. Often among the top ones of the year. But it was clear that Bachchan was in decline. And we’re talking about Hindi cinema’s greatest star here! Again the fans would wait for the ‘next one’. Over time a pattern emerged. Bachchan too had important hits in this period. The Hum initial bordered on hysteria (I doubt there has been a stronger initial in Bombay cinema since, pound for pound), Aaj Ka Arjun was a big hit at the height of the Rath Yatra riots. Nonetheless there were a lot more underperformers and failures. Because Bachchan’s standard was an altogether different one. SRK was never in that sort of position but the logic is the same. A top star can keep doing high profile stuff for a while and put up numbers that flatter to deceive. Along the way there will also be a success or two but the tide will have turned against such a star. What’s happening to SRK isn’t even historically odd. What is odd though is Aamir’s extraordinary run and Salman’s sudden resurgence this late in his career. In most other cases those two would also be in the same boat.

I also wouldn’t blame SRK too much for his choices. He’s selected lousy scripts or poor directors or whatever but in fairness all stars do this. Aamir is the exception even by historical standards. Most stars don’t have any out of the ordinary script sense. When they’re successful they get the best productions, they do them, it’s not rocket science. When they need to reinvent themselves they don’t have the judgment because they’ve never had it. Consider the kinds of films Bachchan did (even in the 80s when these worked big time for him, most of the films aren’t a patch on his great 70s stuff, yes he got great success being the one man industry but that’s a testament to his gifts as an actor and a star not to his judgment, otherwise those gifts could have been put to better use in better films)! This is so for every other star too. Barring exceptions here and there. Aamir’s uncanny sense is truly unique. For any industry.

SRK too has wasted his stardom for at least a decade. He could have done way better in romance, way better on the masala-action terrain and so on. But again it always looks easier than it is. When a star is in decline he depends on an older loyal audience. But the strength genres don’t remain fashionable. The older audience is most invested in these. The star gets older, the genres become stale, the older audience cannot enjoy these efforts in the same way. Meanwhile the newer audience has never been on board for the older genres. The star then attempts newer genres but he’s not as convincing in them because he doesn’t have the same history with them. So newer audiences are still not persuaded and older ones still wait for KKHH2! This is why reinvention is always difficult. The star always falls between two stools.

Despite all this the media has throughout his career been rather kind to him. At his peak they never called him out for his failures and now for a decade they’ve just pretended he’s one of the ‘Khans’. Aamir was accepted as the biggest very late after he’d been delivering hit after hit for years and then the very biggest grossers. Salman too after extraordinary success. They never got this kind of pass earlier on!

Now it’s foolish to say ‘it’s over’ for SRK. But it’s equally foolish to say ‘he’s fine because he isn’t finished’. The two sides feed off each other’s exaggerations. I’ve felt for a while that SRK is in trouble. Again in that same relative sense. Those who don’t like him think JHMS proves everything. But those who are fans would have thought there were no problems at all if the film had done 200. One battles the other side’s fantasy with one’s own! I do believe JHMS, if it really does as badly as looks to be the case right now, does mark an important point. He now needs total reinvention. Certainly compared with Aamir or Salman the gulf is now wide. Incidentally I don’t really think playing the dwarf is going to save him.

All other discussions about his ‘intelligence’ (this too has been a selling point in the media and among the fans) are beside the point. He’s ‘so intelligent’ that he can’t manage his career better when he most needs to. This is his #1 job right? All his ‘marketing genius’ cannot get him films as acclaimed as Aamir’s nor even successes at the same level. We must stop disseminating these fairy tales. Finally about his being rich or richer than many other stars (admittedly Z insists on this the most), again I’m not sure what this has to do with his career (even assuming this is true and I personally think this is another fantasy). Being rich is a not a consolation prize for failing at the box office!

It’s still not too late for SRK but you don’t develop judgment all of a sudden or this late in the day. It’s true that all his younger peers aren’t doing any better. But the ‘I am the king’ spiel is now reduced to ‘hey I’m at least #3’! I doubt SRK is satisfied with this consolation prize either. Again to be clear SRK has enough history to keep going forward for a while. But being a defining star is something else. I don’t mean this only in the box office sense. With age stars can become defining in other ways. SRK has yet to make any such transition. And the stakes are simply rising all the time.

  3. wow! great write-up Satyam. Some points here:

1). “Or this really happened only once on Bollywood. Rajesh Khanna’s dramatic decline (to match his meteoric, really seminal rise) but here he lost out to an even greater force called Amitabh Bachchan” – but again this is a case-study which can reveal a shocking truth that even after his era of crazy superstardom – let us say Namak Haram (1973) – Rajesh Khanna did films for 20 more years and he delivered BO hits as well as a solo-hero!!!

    – yes that 1973 to 1980 was a dry period for him where almost all his films failed but after that Bandish(1980), Kudrat (1981), Rajput (1982), Avtaar (1983), Souten (1983), Agar Tum Na Hote (1983), Amrit (1986)…..even after Amrit, he did a few flop films….but the point his after his 73 period, he reinvented himself and chose brilliant scripts. All of the above from Bandish to Amrit had superb stories and he acted in them with panache. Something SRK needs to do now.

2). “Is he still an important star? Sure! I’m not one of those who thinks Akshay is getting ahead of him. That’s never going to happen. All of Akshay’s hits prove this” – that is true but Akki so fast and chooses different roles. Besides Akki can do action, romance, comedy with aplomb. SRK is a no-no in action and comedy genre. So his only strength romance is a goner now as no one wants a 52 year star romancing a 20 something actress…..with all his cheeky and street-smart manners and mostly on his past laurels – he can not go on and on. Akki will probably remembered more like Jitendra or Rishi who did huge nos. of films but never made it to top 3 or 5. But I would still give Akki no. 3 as of today – and in acting dept. no. 2 – after Aamir. Sallu is sheer star-power. But I would rate him below Akki in that dept. of acting.

3). “Now it’s foolish to say ‘it’s over’ for SRK. But it’s equally foolish to say ‘he’s fine because he isn’t finished’” – true but then he has to take the Dev-Anand route – go on producing films in which he is the hero :-)))))) Paying public is now on defensive while deciding to watch SRK’s film. No one in my group is even talking about JHMS – the same group went ga ga over his films a few years ago….young generation seem disinterested in his films …..so who is the target audience for him now?

4). “But being a defining star is something else. I don’t mean this only in the box office sense. With age stars can become defining in other ways. SRK has yet to make any such transition. And the stakes are simply rising all the time.” – that is quite ruled out now. One doesn’t expect SRK to deliver some masterpieces in next 5 years. So I don’t think he will be remembered in the same league of Aamir ever now onwards. But his intial journey from a nobody to Superstar will surely secure him a place in one of the top ten stars of bollywood history.

  4. An outstanding analysis encapsulating the journey of Shahrukh Khan from his superstardom days to been there star struggling badly & descending lower & lower with his every new release with no respite in the vicinity to take solace from. Shahrukh needs to relax a bit & take some time out & then decide the future course of action as he seems uninterested and indifferent towards his movie choices which is causing the current crisis he has been going through for the last 7-8 years.

  6. @Satyam – Excellent piece here and agreed overall. However, you should add the point regarding how his initial has eroded with repeated disappointments, to such an extent that now his strength genre is opening as low as 15 cr – which is in the same range in which Akshay opens each of his 4 films in a year.

    Like

    • I did discuss the initial. I actually think it’s lower in his strength genre because this genre doesn’t have many takers anymore. Consider the performance of ADHM. This is about the best Johar could do with Ranbir. A full 70 crores behind Bajirao and also 85 crores or so behind YJHD. The former even had competition. Even a failing Dilwale did 140 or so. All of SRK’s stronger or strongest initials have come in genres where there were other frills attached or the production seemed much bigger and so on. He can still post bigger numbers elsewhere. Consider Raees. The film will end up doing at least 40% more than JHMS in the final run. Also had a stronger initial. And it’s not as if SRK has history in this genre.

What I will add here though is that from CE to the HNY opening number to YJHD to Bajirao Deepika seems to be a constant in all of these films. It’s hard to believe her presence is coincidental to the gross. None of those stars gets anywhere close to those numbers without her.

      • Agreed on the Deepika factor. She is a superstar in her own right, more so than any of her female contemporaries.

        • But she should be with the right heroes and directors to produce results. Some niche films where she was the only attraction did not work.

        • Raees worked somewhat inspite of an unknown heroine. I think even in JHMS, many liked srk more than an annoyingly cute anushka.

      • Deepika had that big year with Race 2, YJHD, CE & Ramleela. I don’t think there was a coincidence. I do think though that her uneventful Hollywood gig may hurt in Bollywood. Let’s see.

        • She had Cocktail (2012) before that eventful year. She also followed her 2013 triumphs with HNY (2014), Piku (2015) & BM (2015).

  7. Srk is a force who accidentally became an actor. While acting made him what he is now, his nature is not suited for acting. He is good in interviews, in ads, in talk shows. He had become a phenomenon, a brand. How can he be contained in the dreary business of acting? He is an entrepreneur, a business man and what not. He has moved onto greater things in life. Can we ask a Mukesh Ambani or an Ratan Tata to act in a movie? SRK has become larger than life. His fans should stop pestering him and let him be what he is.

    Like

    • Not sure I get this comment, fine he’s good at interviews and has a good business brain but he’s also a very talented actor when he isn’t left to his own devices (i.e. the overact), in certain films (its a shame not more) like Veer Zaara, Chak De India, Fan he has shone as a true blue thespian. Fair enough, he has made his mark as a businessman but I don’t think you can say his nature isn’t suited for acting, his success has stemmed from that! History will remember him first and foremost as an actor and it’s here he should be building his fort, not as the owner of the knight riders!

  9. I still remember the craze DDLJ had created. Being a young guy with a craze for movies, I ended up in a cinema hall near my house watching this movie 4-5 times. There were only single screens then and movie tickets in the mumbai suburb I was living in was like Rs.15-25 for balcony and around Rs.10-15 for stall (depending on the theater). The tickets were hard to get, so watched it in stall twice I think. With a smaosa and soda available in about Rs.10 during interval this was a great entertainment for 25-30 bucks. Wasn’t that an expensive entertainment like it is now and pretty affordable. It was ok to watch a movie sweating a little in the heat back then. We could deal with that then. Times have changed now. Not sure I can deal with that now. I would rather not watch a film. Anyways, times have changed for SRK too. Seen his rise and witnessing his fall. Haven’t been his fan since 90s, but I wish he could move on with life. Don’t want him to go Dev Anand way or Rajesh Khanna way. Don’t see him doing an AB kinda comeback either. That comeback happens once is history and AB is in a different league. He is rich enough. At least he, media and his fans have portrayed so. If that is the case then he can just take it easy now and do work just for fun. Maybe he will find some of his old spark while doing so. He had his day in sunshine. Now he can just chill and enjoy the sunset.

    • There is no comeback…there is decline and you have to manage the decline…do you want a slow fade or fast one…As Satyam alluded..you will always do couple of good box office hits in between but the graph is downward.

      Wrote this elsewhere:

“Do the fans want good script/movie or good box office collection? I think they long for box office. It is possible that with good script , you get good box office.
If SRK wants to be relevant in long run then he should be aspiring for Randeep Hooda king of role in Highway; the movie may do less but it will count in positive. Let the role define the movie than the personality. I think this is where Akshay has been successful.”

“Having said that when you do something like this (more emphasis on role) , your fans may desert you. Salman tried in Tubelight and fans didn’t like it.
Any movie audience has at least three types; the core fans, the borderline fan, regular audience. The core will always go for the star. But that audience count is not big. If you emphasize on roles then your core could be later two types of audience. I think this is where Aamir has succeeded.”

Once upon in late 80’s to mid 90’s Kanpur had had more than 50 theatres catering to every strata of society from royal Heer Palace to front row favourite Manjushree but from late 90’s theatres began closing down partly owing to piracy & partly due to state government’s very high entertainment tax and then finally the advent of multiplex cinema became the final nail in the coffin of single screen theatres!! I miss the long queues at the ticket counter shoving one another to get to the ticket window and those tasty samosas & doodh ki bottle (milk bottle containing dry fruits) costing just Rs. 10 was my favourite during the interval break, feeling nostalgic going down the memory lane 😢😢

One thing which goes very heavily against Shahrukh is that his next movie is releasing in December 2018 & by then Akshay will have seen 3 to 4 releases, Salman will have minimum 2 & Aamir will have 2 as well, which makes Shahrukh’s position all the more vulnerable as his last release is going to be a flop both trade-wise & critically. So right now future is looking bleak for Shahrukh as he has tried & tested almost all his weapons yet nothing has hit the bull’s eye even in his strength genres which makes the route to redemption a formidable and improbable task if not impossible!!

And this ad nauseam proclamation “25 years at the top” is too trite & banal to evoke any sympathy for Shahrukh and makes Shahrukh’s current standing all the more vulnerable through such infantile claims as they are going to harm him more than offer any help in any which way!! Fans should realise that history can work for them as nostalgia but current generation is not invested in the past especially when it comes to spending one’s hard earned money, so it’s better to introspect than live in the past glory which is not going to serve any purpose in the career of your favourite. You find him hottest & consider him sexiest in the stubble look
which is your prerogative but majority don’t which is why he is not able to connect to the youth neither through his looks nor through his acting which finally reflects in the ever diminishing collections of his every new venture.

The sooner he accepts it and gets on with it better for him and his fans. But I am worried he won’t. There is just too much ego involved here. And in a way his staunchest supporter in his career (media) now is his worst enemy. They keep feeding that ego like they have been, pulling him away from reality.

He is likely to transition into director producer roles fulltime while playing cameos/supporting roles like in TZP, DG and SS. Creatively he is likely to be relevant for coming 2-3 decades imo.

  13. It’s a dangerous game writing obituaries on a career. I agree with coolguy that a decline started with OSO. Despite it being a success – I noted close family who have loved SRK pondering what film he’s done, they disliked it & first time I walked out of the theatre agreeing with many he’s going down – indeed it’s 10 years waiting (but the media support he has is remarkable – his appeal with KKR keeps visibility and bunch of other things not worth getting into). This coinciding with Aamir’s surge really created a situation of the hunter being the hunted.

Out of nowhere Salman entered the picture. This was the tougher aspect I think for SRK – that suddenly both of his direct competition and comparisons were year by year breaking records left right & centre. The biggest issue I think is overseas too – he’s still strong but Aamir has become a beast and simply China has sealed his deal as the top star outside of India. One can debate India as Salman’s but it’s truly I think not true. Scripts follow the best bet which is Aamir. And him also having the ability to pick em is double whammy.

But it’s futile and insulting to right off any career that spans 25 years. It might well decline further but SRK is a talented actor IMO if he allows the director to direct him. His gimmicks must go. His ideas of Ra1 etc are actually healthy – but please pick a stronger director! He’s not chasing Aamir – I think no one is, he’s too picky to mess up wildly. Hits follow him. And the most important aspect is he’s intrinsically motivated by good cinema.

Right off SRK at your peril – he’s just not in the game of winning now. But he’s not in a game of survival – IF the media had been more honest then possibly but they are not, they’ve thrown every opportunity to him to regain his mantle but he’s not got good career management. Satyam explains this and explores this much better – no point me repeating his brilliant piece.

    • If you have been writing obituaries for srk for last ten years, then one is expected to be cautious now. But its one thing to write off a star in his decline (srk in last 10 yrs) and another to smell the coffee when it is finally done and dusted. He may still produce and act in movies, but he has lost his relevance.

        • Jay – I just said he is an ex superstar from BO perspective. That is very true. It has been since a while. Media has helped him keeping a very high celebrity status but from movies perspective he is not what he used to be a decade ago i.e. a superstar. That doesn’t mean he can’t act or have any success at BO, but he is very far from guaranteeing it. That’s what superstars are suppose to do. Guarantee BO success to some degree. That doesn’t mean superstars can’t have a failure, but failure is odd for them (like Tubelight was an odd deal for Salman). For SRK success looks like an odd deal now. And it’s been this way since a long long time. We need to accept this fact.
And many have been pointing out his failure coinciding with rise of Aamir and then Salman. That is because they just raised a game to another level. SRK at his peak wasn’t having a near 100% record or breaking BO records left, right at center. He has just failed to match up with these 2 (coincidentally it all started a decade ago with Ghajini when Aamir raised BO bar). So in a way competition became tougher for him. He tried to raise his game but has failed to do so.

        • All of a sudden I remember that post 2007 (after success of TZP and OSO), SRK was questioned in an interview regards to Aamir making great movies and giving great performances. SRK tried to be diplomatic in his response but he being SRK couldn’t stop himself and added in the end something like ‘My movies collect more at BO’.
Now Taran Adarsh was having an interview with Aamir sometime later and he asked Aamir that ‘SRK says despite all the adulation Aamir is getting his movies work more at BO’. Aamir was really miffed at that and even went on to name couple of SRK’s recent flops (I think one of them was Paheli).
You know I am just speculating, but somehow felt since then Aamir became aggressive in promoting his movies and ensuring he gets the best possible nos. for his movies. Not always, but at least his very next 2 movies (Ghajini and 3I) were extremely well promoted. Before 2008 he was never into marketing his movies too much or never kept himself in news like he does now. Used to be very poor in PR for a celebrity of his stature, but he changed that after 2007.

  14. Outstanding piece !! Just one more aspect I want to highlight !! ‘Khans trilogy’ is very clever marketing campaign. They are selling their brand as a package. Ask anyone, they will say Bollywood is ruling by KHANS. No one differentiates or bother to look at broader picture on who among three is actually ruling. So even if one of them is down, he gets benefit of its brand value still very high because at least one of Khan is really on top of game. This also helping them sustaining their stardom. Also fans community of three khan fighting , and they are competing with each other also helping them to sustain their fan base. I can bet even if SRK give 10 more commercial flops, he will still command good fan base as long as any one of Khans is doing good. Their decline will start only when all three will start failing at same time , till then they will be here to stay.

    • It is the media which is selling this. Not they themselves. They are fiercely competitive. Salman supports an Akshay than the other Khans. Aamir does not care and he is bothered only about his own films. Srk supports himself. It suits media to club them together, pit them against each other, It is an easy job for them. Even fans dont want this three in one.

      • Bottom line is none of them going anywhere because competition is weak to negligible at the moment to put them out of sight. They including Akki and Ajay will still attract heavy duty projects until 2022 to the very least and they will be close to 60 around that time. That’s where the Vidhaatas, Karmas, Hums and Saudagars will come into picture before few of them graduate to Piku and Pink.

On SRK , in my last comment I wrote ‘if’ he is interested in movies. May be there is small money in movies compared to his other businesses….there is hardly any effort to court the best scripts or directors….and if one is starting with new breed of directors , give them the latitude to incorporate their own ideas…so much has happened since you left a regular life on the street…let these newbie come with their own sensibilities. Raees was example of pure bullshit film making and crappy cinema which was neither here or there. Total waste of time, resources and money. An arty Dholakia who wanted to make a rustic realistic cinema was suddenly entrusted with masala potboiler. All this mishmash ain’t going to work for anyone and he is no exception.

He sends such mixed signals all the time and for a person who is claiming to be ultra busy to read scripts and do movies but has all the time for irrelevant promotions and those train ride and TV shows…. The easy success has made him very flippant towards filmmaking and somewhere arrogance creeps in with failure….main kar lunga and this will work…. Filmmaking has changed over period of time and audience much more observant to behind the scene (due to print media and so many gossips sites). Simply one transformation video of Aamir during Dangal promotions changed the whole dynamics of the movie and its reach. Most of us got invested in younger aamir’s back story though that’s hardly there in the movie and for 99% of the time he was shown bulky /ugly in the movie……but it never mattered for an industry which relies so much on superficial vanity.

  16. The main problem has been the Yash/Aditya Chopra/Karan Johar kind of cinema. As long as these directors were riding high and their brand of cinema was working, SRK was doing well. Now they are way past their best and SRK has never been able to dissociate himself from from that kind of cinema. Suddenly the audience is more limited to those kind of deals and there is limited scope for romantic roles when you are ageing.

If only SRK had tried to vary a bit more earlier, he would have been in a better position.

Salman was a chocolate hero for quite a while, with the occasional comedies. But you will notice that he had always (albeit unsuccessfully) kept trying for action movies. There always were the likes of Jaagruti, Suryavanshi, Veergati, Veer or Garv in his filmography. So, once action movies were being accepted and he was being liked in those deals, he came back strongly. Only try to imagine Salman persisting with his ‘Prem’ kind of deals, of course it would have been a lot more difficult for him.

Akshay Kumar shifted to comedies when action was not working and he has now shifted to social dramas. Even lesser stars like Devgan started doing comedy late on to just survive.

SRK always was in a healthier position but he failed to experiment enough. You can’t simply keep on relying on the Rahul/Raj kind of deals when you are nearing 50. A few hard hitting social dramas at the expense of the likes of JTHJ and he would have made the transition. But he bought into the ‘KIng of Romance’ tag a bit too much.

I was watching Rishi Kapoor doing romantic movies in the late 80s and early 90s and it was quite clear he was struggling because the scope and choices there were very limited for him at that age. It was worse than watching Dharmendra or Vinod Khanna romancing younger heroines because their movies barely relied on those romantic parts. But it was quite painful to watch Rishi Kapoor in some of those out and out love stories back then. They say that romantic heroes age badly. SRK is facing the same problem.

  18. Not directing this at anyone in particular but let’s not get carried away. I have been saying a lot of this stuff about SRK’s decline for a long time (and have been attacked for it for as long) but it’s important not to make him look completely ridiculous! Yes he needs to fix a few things and certainly this could become a path of no return for him if he keeps this up. Nonetheless he’s not there yet and it might well be that this kind of genre failure prompts some serious rethinking in him. My point here is: let’s not treat him like nothing! Yes there’s a huge gap between him and Aamir/Salman right now but it’s not as if any of the other stars are doing great things. Akshay is very stable, he’s made the right decisions but he also has a rather low ceiling on his gross. Of course the SRK fans should also take some lessons here. All the arrogant stuff that was said for years, all the stuff that was said about other stars etc. Not saying every single person did it but many did. They should see here how easy it is to ridicule even a star who’s been at it for many years. I don’t agree with this ‘over-reaction’ but it’s nonetheless symptomatic. I was attacked for years for saying some of these things but I was never saying them gratuitously. And today when everyone’s saying a lot of these things (a lot of it with justification) I don’t mind disagreeing. Because one must honestly believe things. One can be wrong in one’s judgment, that’s fine, but one shouldn’t just play politics with this stuff. Similarly one shouldn’t be so crazed as a fan that one keeps choosing narratives that completely favor one star and the opposite for another one. Once again SRK will not have an easy time at reinvention for all the reasons that have been beaten to death by now. But that’s very different from saying ‘hey he’s finished’! I’m certainly not on board with the latter sentiment. I don’t have any sympathy with the fans or SRK (for the reason I just indicated) but that is different from analyzing things critically.

    • Satyam!! Some are choosing more diplomatic approach while some are being more blunt but pretty much all are agreeing with what is happening IMO. Diplomatic approach guys are leaving a small opening somewhere for may be not sounding too rude or arrogant or just out of respect. While the guys who are being blunt stating plain facts and not mincing with words and of course somewhere in past these guys have just lost the respect for the star and his fans. Anyways, I still remember in NG how Aamir fans were given very difficult time by some of the SRK fans, who were also like SRK very good at articulating. I won’t forget those days. Any viable discussion on movies and performances and they would just slap BO nos. on everyone’s face. Now BO has slapped SRK and his fans on their face. How about that?? I give a damn about being diplomatic here.
SRK isn’t finished. Maybe!! But any reinvention seems highly unlikely.

      • I don’t disagree with most of what you’re saying. I wasn’t addressing you either. Or anyone in particular for that matter. But it’s also important not to lose perspective. Even if SRK fans did it in the past (and of course I remember everything!). But again I don’t really disagree with you on much. And I’m certainly not being diplomatic. But just as a star’s capital can seem exaggerated when everything is going well the opposite can also be true. On a related note I think the dwarf film is a very bad idea. Even when Kamal did it there was a double role. The audience could see the ‘normal’ star as well. In an analogous sense Abhishek fulfilled this ‘normalization’ function in Paa. You couldn’t ‘see’ the father or hear his true voice but Abhishek’s comforting presence was enough. Don’t believe that film would have worked with someone else in that [Abhishek’s] part. The audience has to see the star first and foremost. If SRK just plays the dwarf I think it will be extremely hard if not impossible for him to pull it off. The gimmick might work in the media but it simply won’t sell and this could truly turn into a ‘ridiculous’ moment for him. Certain moments are very hard to live down. Once more, SRK has enough capital left but he’s also in some very real danger. He needs a more serious rethink than this dwarf film would suggest.

        • I think that’s the danger of always being the ‘marketing’ guy. He’s been overrated on this front. When the movies were working he didn’t need that kind of marketing. Certainly not in his peak mid-90s and beyond phase. Later on and specially post-Mohabbatein Bachchan, post-KNPH Hrithik, post-Lagaan Aamir he started going overboard with the marketing. Obviously he was a huge star so he could jack up the initials this way. But he never got trending like KKHH after the release of that film, let alone anything like DDLJ. Because unfortunately for him Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar more or less just had one or two films in them. In any case the marketing did the trick for a while because he still usually had the bigger grossers and so on. But he also had the tendency to believe it was all about marketing. In other words ‘make a decent film but market it like crazy’ as opposed to attempting something better than decent. And some of us have argued on this point for a long time but whether it’s Hollywood or Bollywood you only get good trending with a film that’s truly liked. No amount of marketing can get you good trending if the film isn’t really liked. Nothing that has happened between say DDLJ and JHMS (with SRK or any other star) argues against this rule. Of course over the last decade or more people have explicitly made films just for the initials. The trending is usually poor but the gross is big enough and everyone pretends it’s a successful film. So things have if anything gotten worse since SRK’s peak phase. But this is where that marketing logic leads. And no one other than Aamir seems to have learnt this very obvious lesson. It’s not just since Lagaan. Aamir’s successes (at any level) have generally been good on trending. He’s very rarely had the film that does well in week 1 and then fizzles out. One look at his 90s hits or everything since Lagaan. Similarly Salman could manage the Bajrangi gross only once. Because it was a truly liked film that trended well. Otherwise even Sultan fell short with a lot more commercial factors working in its favor. In any case this is what happens when you think that marketing can make up for the lack of an adequate script. SRK should have learnt this lesson by now but somehow he didn’t. The other thing here is that by and large SRK sold himself as the guy with the biggest gross (as you pointed out). So he was willing to try out different things upto a point. He always wanted that reassurance of the biggest gross (as did frankly his base). Most tellingly despite CDI’s success he never really followed it up with anything comparably small scale. Even when he does a Fan it’s about being a ‘superstar’. There just isn’t the truly sincere effort out there. The Swedes kind of thing where even if the film doesn’t work you don’t lose credibility. Now this late in the day reinvention becomes harder given all of this. But he really needs it if he wants to be an important star going forward. And again ‘marketing’ never changes the basic narrative on a career. Whether you’re doing well or not marketing can help on the margins. It can’t be the difference between 200 and 300 even on a reasonably liked film let alone less than this.

I think since his debut, SRK is at his lowest point ever…He has only 1 movie in hand whose budget might be beyond him to salvage. And No release for over 18 months in an industry where out of sight is out of mind…It will be interesting to see what he does next…The last 3 movies after Dilwale , though it flopped, I was happy as there was an effort to do something different. But JHMS was a bad choice of role as it does nothing to him and Imtiaz for some reason went too safe..SRK hasn’t been the kind of person who learns from his mistakes throughout his career. So his next move will be interesting to see..
I don’t think he can afford to have no release for 18 months…Its just not done…More so after this debacle. So it wont be a bad idea for him to do a quickie. Either ways its either the devil or the deep sea for him…No easy way out now.

Srk had 14 months gap between Rab Ne and MNIK (had a Billu in between) and then 20 months gap between MNIK and Ra.One. The current gap between JHMS and dwarf is 16 months (though more or post production work) and though he’ll in news with other movies he’ll be shooting early next year by the time it release and then next movie will be pretty early in 2019. Something like Ra.One and Don2 came closer. There was some talks with Shoojit Sircar’s next but he went and signed Varun Dhawan for another script. Maybe it’ll happen after that.

  22. Replying to some who replied to me earlier here and then all, these two things are similar. You havent seen the film. so you are blind to what’s wrong with it. But you are commenting on it..that’s without much base. Same way, you dont know what is going on with the star. ofcourse, who has been a top styar for 25 years, there is no denying that, and you are offering advice. Maybe he is doing different scheme of things, different directors etc, just for the heck of it. Maybe he is no longer looking for the biggest grossers. Last two films, fan and Raees where not conventional or massey, and this one although in romantic genre, you all are conveniently forgetiing they didnt go for the widest release. They were aware this wasn’t a huge number film before all of you, and still you are still on it for the longest time, offering advice how to get big again. Cmon, he has been there for 25 years, without taking many gaps and re invent, or being lost in medicrity for a long time, he had a quite a successful career in that aspect. Now what you know what he is looking for? So, offering advice to someone who did it all successfully for so long, bad idea.

As for this film, i wud have loved to do more of a discussion on it, I cant reallly see what the people are complaining about? there was a promise of a love story, and it is a love story in the pure sense. So what they were looking for? hordes of family members, insistent parents, engagaemnet, marriage songs, fight for traditional conventions?

This love story is purely about two people..who are taking their own decisions. especially the girl, she has a family who lets her take he decisions. She decides to stay back on her own, becos she cant stand her fiancee taunting her about ‘family ring’. She is not feeling that gulty about it, it is clear she doesnt care that much also. Hero isnt very sure, how did they let you stay back alone, he is trying to sound paternal or brotherly, rather conservative. ‘Why not, I am a modern girl, I can survive on my own’ is her way of thinking. And she gets him also to tag along, not to protect her, which he didnt want to do either, promising to pay him.

And when they starts getting closer to each other, she doesnt think anything of hugs, cuddles, even sleeping o same bed. She is not struck by guilty feeling, she doesnt start howling getting up in the morning, a la simran, thinking she lost her precious ‘sabkuch’. She was even ready to go all the way, maybe her decision was made in her mind and she recognised what to do, it is the hero who pulls back, who wasnt ready for commitment on his side, or he didnt want to state his feelings openly first, even if she asks, what does he want.

This is a modern take. Family hardly comes into it. People who go looking for ddlj wont get it. when he sister asks about her change over a chat, what she is doing there, she says’ I am celebrating my honeymoon, since after marraige I have to become boring like you’ Was she searching for her ring anymore, not sure.

Another moment was when his friend asks the hero to forget what happened, hero says, ‘is it necessary to forget? why shud I forget the best thing that happened to me?’

As you can see, I am a total fan of the film. And even all through the hordes of ‘hate comments on all social mediums, you can see people who genuinely loved it, and who cant understand what’s wrong with it. I love SRK for doing this, I dont find it hard to defend his decision to do this. 20 years aftr DDLJ whose quintessential sugary, sweet conventional heroine was made to cross the family dictat by a hardworking, charning loverboy, only after the consent of two families, here the decision is made by the girl, with or without her family supporting we never get to know, she makes him get to her, and she demands him cross the physical barrier-set by him- to prove it.

Hope you all get it. You need some romance also sometimes..not just numbers. And no one does it better than Shahrukh!

    • Great comment and well said. I’ve seen someone mentioning that even I didn’t like it. But all I said it was not going to work at box office but it is as vijjie puts love story in the purest sense. Just 2 people finding each other and also find themselves. It is part of the movies SRK signed as a bunch and experimental.

I kept repeating that and will repeat again. After Dilwale, all his next 5 movies are experimental and all can FLOP as well and they appear to be under-performing.

Fan, Dear Zindagi, Raees, JHMS and dwarf film. I need to see what movies he’ll sign in his next batch.

Anyone who understands industry know that he signed Imtiaz Ali not for a biggest grosser but in that phase, a different take of romantic movie. It also came in a bad phase as all previous movies under-performed. Folks keep repeating same thing.. like how can you expect him to change in months.. it just depends on his next set of movies. Till what he signs, we wouldn’t know.

Fine SRK has a new strategy and he just tried it and failed. No need to praise it, it’s not noble! Noble would be charity like Bill Gates! This is showbiz baby! It’s entertainment – there are in this world many ways to learn if a film is worth watching or not – I apply the same logic to any film.

There is no advantage to watching the film you have displayed beyond a lovely personal review. Your ending lines are still – no one does it better than SRK? Need I say more? If you’re watching from the prism that SRK is sexy and amazing I doubt the validity of your personal endorsement against the barrage of negativity out there. Basically I’m not going to shell out £50 on a film in all likelihood I won’t like as firstly I’m not a fan of the hero, secondly the trailers haven’t interested me, thirdly a few fans of his are suggesting it’s good etc. Would you give Mela a shot with your hard earned money with all that information at hand?

  23. @Satyam – In your attempt to pave a middle-path, I think you are not reading the current signs properly.

If you have been following JHMS BO, then you should realize that it is no ordinary failure. The genre going out of favor can be brought in to explain a dismal 15 cr opening day, but the truth is more bitter. Even in the last few years, when no film of his was working at BO, we still considered him relevant. Why? Because of the cultural capital that he carries with him (as you correctly pointed out). That capital is nothing but his image as a romantic hero. If romance as a genre is dead, then that cultural capital would have been zero long back, and he would not have been relevant or been hanging around as a #3 star. But his strength genre opening at 15 cr shows that he is not relevant to this genre anymore. Even his core fan base is not excited to see this anymore. Romance is not dead, but it is the death of SRK’s romantic heroship. Age has caught up with him, and romance is a genre of the young.

JHMS is not even a weekend movie. The BO has remained flat over Saturday and Sunday. Even the last disaster JJ had showed some growth over the weekend. JHMS has simply not worked for its target audience. A crash at this point is inevitable, may not happen completely today (due to partial holiday), but the signs are ominous for tomorrow. All trade sites are now predicting 65-75 cr lifetime! The distribution price in India is itself in that range – this is a bonafide disaster – worst for SRK since CE, and he really has not been doing well in the meantime!

There is another reason why many of us genuinely feel and believe that this is not just another low point for a star in decline, but a serious tipping point. What does the near future look like? His next release is going to be that dwarf film which will only release after 18 months. That is too long a gap. Also, it is yet another romcom, paired again with Anushka and carries a formidable budget! After JHMS disaster, he will not get a solo release for his film next Christmas. Chances of that film to work is v slim. He as not signed any film after that. His script sense is non existent and even though he is a producer, he does not understand any creative aspect of film-making, except perhaps the business/financial side and the fraudulent accountancy of RCE. This is after spending 25 years in that industry as a Superstar! He is plain dumb and vain, and his fans are even more dumber to interpret his cockiness as ‘intelligence’.

Chances of reinvention or a major comeback is v slim IMHO. But do wake me up, if he makes a comeback. And going by the current state of his things, it is not happening for at least in the coming 2 years.

    • As expected, the start is poor on Monday inspite of holiday. As per addatoday, it may at best do 7-8 cr. It is likely to do 60 cr approx in first week and fold up in 70-75 cr range.

Overseas numbers are better for the weekend as per BOI, but not good enough to salvage some pride. SRK is passe in overseas too, but perhaps not as irrelevant yet as he is in India now.

    • I agree 100% with Satyam – there isn’t even diplomacy in his comments or any middling. He is pretty much saying ‘Chances of reinvention or a major comeback is v slim IMHO.’ but in a non exaggerated manner. But those righting off SRK aren’t even saying NEVER EVER will he get back – that’s the ultimate debate. I don’t think I’m saying he will, I’m just not ruling out a remote possibility.

Romance is not dead – for years people thought action was but it came back in a different format. Romance will always be alive as long as marriage and love are alive – which I think is till whenever people are alive. The action phase of 80’s slowly left when films like QSQT, MPK, Aashique etc and the YRF/Dharma factory arrived.

It’s simply very few takers to see SRK doing it now. It’s like watching Usain Bolt run 100m at 50!

Satyam can correct but reading between his lines – SRK has limited opportunities but if he chooses wisely, even then the chances are slim!

But he’s not saying never! Never bites everyone back! Words of experience I say!

A flicker of a fire can burn a city down! 1666, a fire in a bakery nearly wiped out London.

I’m not predicting any comeback, but I bet no one expected Federer to win 2 GS’s this year. Or Trump to win. Or Leicester City winning. Stranger and much more ridiculous things have happened than a SRK comeback; heck even Akshay being #1 can’t be ruled out!

Ps. I watched Khakee yesterday – excellent film. Tour de force by everyone. Loved each character from Anant to Devdhar. What a kick ass film – in laws glued to TV. Nearly 15 years ago and no one get close to this classic. Politics, romance, drama, action, thriller all in one.

Presumably SRK was all this (if you believe this about him) when he was doing very well too! Again have no sympathy with him at a personal level. I am simply talking about cold box office realities and trying to understand how SRK got to this point. Whether he’s nice guy or not is a different debate. Incidentally many of us have had these debates in the past. We’ve even talked about his politics and so on. But there’s no real correlation between being a nice guy and successful or not as a star. Or better still even nice guys can end up making these very same mistakes in this business. Similarly I’ve tussled with many of the SRK fans for years. It was much worse in the past! But these sorts of personal insults don’t really add to the discussion. Even if others did the same there’s no reason one has to follow that course. All of this doesn’t mean I’m following a middle path on anything.

      • Personally, I have always felt that SRK is just a cheeky arrogant street-smart guy whose cheekiness/cockiness has been peddled by the media and fanatics as ‘intelligence’. This has nothing to do with his days of success or decline, it has always been the case.

    May I ask why?

Any big star can reinvent anytime and make a comeback. SRK is still in his early 50s which now is equivalent to early 40s a generation ago. So he has atleast a decade before he starts looking old.

SRK has done it several time in the past and now he has more resources to do.

I will still take Adi Chopra/ Karan movie with SRK any day over any other star’s movie. I think SRK should immediately sign one up here. The likes of current generation big directors barring Hirani is hardly great.

Jokes apart this is exactly what has messed SRK up. Though at face value looks like he is trying something different. But he isn’t. He is just chasing glory like he always had. So basically he is experimenting things to see what can finally crack. But unfortunately nothing is. He has no hunger for great performance or great cinema anymore. Just glory hunting!!!

    • I have grown on these stars and till date noone comes close to SRK, Aamir, Sallu and Akki. The same is not true for others like Hrithik, Ajay.

I say nooone. Ranbir is creating his own space which will take lot of time. But he will do it.

So I will defend these stars till you show me an alternative.

And i believe SRK’s next is just 9 months away- Mark my words. He will retirn with a bang.

So why are Aamir khan fans rejoicing here?

For long they craved to get an open and clear field the way SRK got and Salman got post Dabangg. So with SRK and Sallu gone (Best time for Aamir Khan fan is now…not when Dabangg released), fans of Aamir khan are going bananas.

There is some logic in what Satyam wrote…i am not refuting it straight awat…but i think the purpose is ill defined.

      • Just wait and watch. If SS underperforms, there will be celebrations! You should not mind it much. It happened during MP. It happenend during TL.

        • And this is not rejoicing. SRK is far from Aamir’s league now for Aamir fans to rejoice at his debacle. This is telling we can give back what we get. And we can get dirty too. We know someday even Aamir will fail. That can happen with SS too as Sanjana pointed out. But there were some who thought SRK will never fail and will always stay on top and they can undermine success of other stars by propaganda and showing off his BO collections. Not sure you have faced that, but anyways. The hurt and disgust is not forgotten. So for now whoever and wherever you guys are.. TAKE THAT!!! We will see what happens tomorrow.

        • A movie made in a budget of 15 cr or even less (SS) starring Aamir Khan and produced by him: What are the chances of underperforming it ? :-))))))))))))))

          Like

        • On top of the 15 cr budget, SS is co-produced by Zee Studios, who are also distributing the film themselves. Its a profit sharing arrangement between AKP and Zee. So no chance of it being sold with a crazy distribution price like Akshay’s TEPK. SS is the safest film out there right now (that is how ‘intelligently’ Aamir places the economics of his productions – no ‘cockiness’ or ‘greediness’ unlike in other quarters). What really are the chances of it under-performing?

  27. I am also surprised why SRK fans are defensive here.

Guys SRK’s stardom is built over several years of awesome movies, killing all competition whatever they were.

This is the first real test and vultures are out. Get your guns.

SRK will fade off…but atleast not now. This is jumping with joy too early for many.

that reflects in his offscreen antics. Always breaking into that trademark pose of his with arms spread out and encouraging others to do it, irrespective of the event under question. That I feel is ridiculous and embarrassing.

  30. I would still want him to turn it around and re-invent himself. But from the choices he is making and has been making during the last 7-8 years or so, it is looking less likely.

The problem is that SRK is still implying that he hasn’t too many love stories lately when the fact is that he should have diversified and gone for more meaningful or more socially relevant films.

Had he done so, he would have made the transition more easily and not been stuck with the gimmicks.

Of course he can still re-invent himself. But it is going to be harder once the staleness comes in. There is also the major ‘if’ he really wants to re-invent himself.

Right now, it looks like he still considers himself as the ‘King of Romance’ and it will be the least surprising of things if his next release after the dwarf film will be another love story and you find him spreading his arms again in 2020!

And the stakes are simply rising all the time.”

This is exactly what i said. I agree with Satyam here…why did others agreed with him and disagreed with me, when both meant the same?

Oh yes, i was not diplomatic and Satyam came across as one for sure. But still we said the same thing.
