  1. Responding to Z’s point elsewhere here. I too was surprised about MDK at one level but not at another. This perhaps seemed a bit too much like other films when it came out. It was certainly one of the better films in that genre but Hrithik (and this has been an old point of mine) is never successful (ever!) in a film where he isn’t ‘special’ in some sense. Because he simply isn’t able to add anything to the obvious. Saif has done better in some cases in this larger genre than Hrithik. Precisely because of Hrithik’s persona MDK seems flat in certain respects but with another actor (let alone SRK in this genre) it would have been more ‘alive’. It’s still fine (relying on memory) as a film, but beyond not seeming very fresh it lacks something and for me that’s Hrithik’s inability to really suggest empathy of any sort. He only ever had this quality very early on in his career. Lost it too soon, always fatal for a star. Over time even the greatest stars start losing it but it shouldn’t have happened as early as it did for him. The films that have worked for him at any level have always incorporated this ‘problem’/strength (his strengths are also his weaknesses.. this is how I’d put it.. as long as he stays with his strengths he’s fine but whenever he crosses over to more regular roles he runs into problems.. this is very different from a star becoming iconic in regular roles.. there’s nothing special about SRK’s key roles or Salman’s.. just that they become very successful doing them..).

    • True, the “special” is needed for Hrithik.

On that note, this is where I have a problem with Aamir, in sense that in all of his films, he relies heavily on the getup/props. And it does get used heavily for film publicity so one can’t deny the impact of it.
It may relate to the actor being played but I often feels it’s not necessary and is used just to get some eyeballs. Further, it’s conceived by audience as it’s a great acting.

Being partial bald headed in gajini, changing hair style in many films, having a mustache or beard, or putting on weight, etc… is really not needed for some of the role. Dare I say it’s kind of like what Gulshan Grover did with his villain roles where every film had him in different getups.

Think of Dilip, Bachhan, etc, they didn’t need to have all these different getups to portray different roles they’ve played.

May be I’m not explaining clearly but would love to see Aamir with his regular look and be like a regular person.

      • There is difference between regular of Aamir khan the person or the regular of the role being portrait? Ghajini Business man was different from revenge seeker. Why does circus joker dress in certain way than other people in circus?

        • Usual trolling by trolls. If they dont like it, they can give the film a miss. Why to waste money on a below par actor’s films anyway? They can watch JHMS again and again and get more footfalls. That is the reason why we are asked to watch the movie first again and again.

        • The reason that Aamir can change looks or get up for each of his film is due to the less number of films he do compare to any other. This gives him liberty to experiment with his looks. I like this fact about him. This is all part of a process to get the character right.

        • I don’t even feel Aamir is a special actor. He tries his best to give the best film possible. You try to make the best house possible, you try to get the best materials, look and feel. He enjoys this process. And as he has 1+ years he is bound to spend time on his look – it’s natural. Even Hrithik does it!

It’s just actors who do more frequent films who don’t. It’s not a legitimate criticism in any sense. It just comes with the Aamir package. Putting on a moustache etc does not imply better acting, but maybe effort shines through. His process of getting there he enjoys and I’m sure a viewer can appreciate the metamorphosis of becoming an overweight 50+ year old or slimming down to play a college student. Ultimately he never becomes bigger than the script – that is crucial.

It’s the filmmaking process he seems to like. If he had 2-3 different films shooting – how can he play a wrestler father or college student together? It’s impossible. His look is specific for a time frame of shooting.

        • He did getups for MP, Ghajini, Dangal. Then there were two Hirani films,in which PK had somehwt a special act..and then dhoom also had a special character.. then minor getups for RDB, Fanaa, Talash. So its more like acting being differnt in diffrent films means getup being differnt for aamir. And if you are really unbiased you will agree aamir is a very limited actor, which he needs to make up with get ups and rehearsals.

Now abusing SRK or his films wont change that. But you can try.

Think of Don and Dostana, bachchan didn’t need to do anything extra to his face to display acting of a villain versus a cop.

      • There’s a point to what you are saying but I’d read this more charitably. Admittedly these things can get gimmicky beyond a point. But in some ways the master of this deal was/is Kamalahasan. He started this very early. But in contemporary Bollywood the ‘look’ has become a kind of norm. Following Hollywood in this sense. In other words if you are considered a serious actor (rightly or wrongly) the audience almost expects something ‘special’ not only in terms of the role but also in terms of physicality. I find this structure very problematic but it’s hard to resist. Absurdly the other day when the Sahir movie rumors were doing the rounds the focus seemed to be on Abhishek losing weight and getting the ‘look’ right! Even for a legendary poet you have to work out! I too have longed to see Aamir without the frills. But the audience sees the look as evidence of a more serious actor. And so many other actors have done it too (omkara, Hyder, Guru etc.. now there’s the Dutt film). Even if the role actually demands the physical transformation the point still stands. The audiences would think less of all those actors if they did the very same parts, with the very same performances, but with their ‘normal’ look. Again this structure was already at work with Kamal even early on in his career. I’d just add this bit for Aamir, for an older star the look also has the added advantage of hiding age. No matter how fit the star might otherwise be it’s just impossible to hide age. So I am sympathetic to this criticism of Aamir to an extent. On the other hand if one just goes film by film I think he’s convincing in just about every case.

No doubt, and aamir really cares about the film and film making. Most others really don’t care about the final and the whole product.

          Great point on Kamal.

        • So my point is like in Dangal, it’s great the effort he put in to putting on weight, etc. but is every 50 year old former wrestler in that shape, do they have to be? That’s where I think it starts looking gimmicky.

By the way, I met Bob Backlund past Sunday. Still in great shape (looked much thinner but in great lean shape). Felt sorry for him as nobody was at his booth for the book signing he was doing.

Toilet – Ek Prem Katha is the next big film that we all are eagerly waiting for. In just a few hours the Akshay Kumar-starrer social drama will open in theaters in India. However, fans of the actor in UAE are luckier as they have been able to catch the film hours earlier than us. Like every time, the first review of the film has come from UAE.

Toilet – Ek Prem Katha has been directed by Sree Narayan Singh and stars Bhumi Pednekar as the female lead, opposite Akshay. Wrapped within a romantic story is a strong message-oriented tale. The movie deals with the sensitive subject of lack of toilets in rural India. As per the statistics promoted by the film, as many as 54 per cent of Indians still defecate in the open. Now, those numbers are alarming, and it is great that a movie takes up the task of addressing it. There is just as much that can go wrong with the film as it could go right. Talking about the wrongs and rights of the film is Gulf News. “The satire, which takes a nick at the unholy, but prevalent practice of open defecation in India, comes across as a star-driven propaganda vehicle,” the review opens. Ouch!

But later, in the review, there are quite a few praises for Toilet Ek Prem Katha. “Director Sree Narayan Singh has a superb knack of shrouding grim social scenarios and regressive traditions with wry humour,” the film critic points out, and further adds that Akshay-Bhumi are “charming as a couple” and their “romantic escapades are endearing.”

“The first half is smooth, but it’s the second half that gets constipated.” Yep there are going to be a lot toilet jokes in every review you read. The reviewer further adds that the premise that promises to be intriguing becomes repetitive and laboured. Some critique on the film’s editing later, the writer concludes, “While the intention of this film is noble and should be lauded, the love story gets lost in the din of indoctrinating the glorious Indian government’s honourable campaign. Watch this if you are in the mood to witness earnest acting performances, but if you are looking for a propaganda-free film, then this is not it.”

  6. Toliet Ek Prem Katha Should Open Well
    Thursday 10 August 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

This week will see the release of Toliet Ek Prem Katha and it should take a decent opening. The film had a good theatrical trailer but that is in terms of content and a very well defined love story. Its not a trailer which will bring a big audience on the opening. The last few Akshay Kumar starrers have opened at 11 crore (Airlift), 15 crore (Housefull 3), 13.50 crore (Rustom) and 12 crore (Jolly LLB 2) and this film as far as opening value will probably be in this range. Its very similar to Jolly LLB 2 in look though content looks better so an opening like that will do and then the film can go on from there. If it goes towards Housefull 3 it would be an excellent opening day. It is a content film so that Monday is crucial and then it has a few holidays to benefit from which should be more than enough for the film. This is because it has the best theatrical trailer of the year outside Bahubali – The Conclusion so basically its the best trailer as far as outright Hindi films goes.

The director is a newcomer with one film behind so the capability is not really known. The resources available on this film are far bigger than the first film. Last week there were mails that how can we see Imtiaz Ali as a negative for Jab Harry Met Sejal but the director of Toliet Ek Prem Katha is not seen that way. This is because Imtiaz Ali has previous work and you know its going to be similar and if it has not worked before its asking a lot for it work now especially as now with Shahrukh Khan it has to work on a bigger level. Here there is nothing to go on so you can’t be positive or negative on the director. Toilet Ek Prem Katha will determine the capabilty of the director and hope is that he will pull it off as the industry is in desperate need of good directors.

At various times in his career, he’s been an art house auteur, a must-have director of the moment, a renegade and a recluse. But he’s found what he wants to do is make movies that, whatever genre they fall into, can be seen by as many people as possible.

“I’ve been shooting my mouth off for a long time about aspects of the movie business I’m frustrated with,” he said recently. “I make declarative statements a lot that I then have to walk back. But I think the country’s used to that.”

  8. BREAKING: Salman Khan returns Rs. 32.5 Crores to distributors for Tubelight; Will Shah Rukh Khan follow suit for Jab Harry Met Sejal?

On Wednesday, 9th August, Salman Khan called the distributor to compensate for the losses suffered at the Box-Office over Tubelight. Salman, on the behest of his father Salim Khan, agreed in June to reimburse for the losses suffered for Tubelight. Finally the reimbursement is happening today.

Says a source close to the development, “Salman Khan had promised to return his distributor’s money by the end of July. However, he was busy shooting abroad for Tiger Zinda Hai. Now that he’s back in Mumbai, he has agreed to return Rs. 32.5 crores to the distributors. This is half of the total losses suffered by distributors over Tubelight.”

Interestingly, the same distributor, Shreyans Hirawat has suffered losses of around Rs. 50 crores on the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal.

The buzz is Shah Rukh will follow in Salman’s footsteps and compensate for the losses.

    • After all the hullabaloo, Salman returns only 32.5 crores for the distributors. Dilwale didn’t do as bad as Tubelight but SRK still returned 25 crores during that time. Salman should have returned at least 60 crores for Tubelight. But something is fine.

Don’t see point to return much on JHMS, it wasn’t sold expensively and it is manageable losses and not something which will kill distributors.

Days to be nice and polite are gone when some srk fans try to bring womanising and makeup choices with an agenda trying to forget their own hero’s shortcomings in the wake of JHMS’s thundering failure and Dangal’s thundering success. JUst because Amitabh does not do makeup, it does not mean Aamir has to follow his example. Every actor has his own style. Aamir’s acting does not overpower other actor’s contribution. It is not a self goal. An actor is someone who allows other actors to shine.

  11. Caste reference edited out of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Aug 11, 2017 – 9:07 am IST
Just a few days before its release Toilet – Ek Prem Katha is embroiled in a caste controversy. A character in the film was heard saying, “I am a Brahmin. But I eat eggs.”

While initially the Central Board Of Film Certification let the line go thinking it is more an individual comment than a comment on any caste or community, it was soon brought to light that the seemingly casual line secretes a caste bias.

“We’ve asked the makers of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha to remove the caste reference. The word ‘Brahmin’ is not allowed specially when seen to be speaking on behalf of the community. The line propagates the myth that Brahamins are strict vegetarians. We cannot allow sweeping generalizations on any caste or community,” says a source from the CBFC.

The line referring to a Brahmin who eats eggs would have to be removed. “The caste system has been abolished in India. If today J P Dutta wants to make Kshatriya or the late Vijay Anand were to make Rajput the titles would not be allowed,” says a CBFC source, adding that way back in 2008 a reference to a lohar (ironsmith) had to be removed from a song and dance featuring Madhuri Dixit in Aaja Nachle.

The censor board has asked the makers of Bombay Velvet to remove the word ‘dhobi’ from a song in the film.

According to guidelines all references to members of any specific caste or community is strictly prohibited through censorial guidelines. “Aamir Khan’s Dhobi Ghat had to get a clearance from the dhobi community before it could be called that,” says a source from the censor board.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who is busy with the preparation for “Chanda Mama Door Ke”, says it is India’s first space film and despite the budget limitations, the team is bravely facing the challenge of making a worthwhile film.

“It is quite a challenging film because it will be India’s first space film, and knowing that we all loved seeing ‘Gravity’ and ‘Interstellar’ and we don’t have so many dollars to make the film. So, it is extremely challenging for us to make this film and give you the same experience without having that much of funding. We are doing our best,” Sushant said here on Wednesday.

“I always wanted to go to NASA, I stayed there and did everything an astronaut is supposed to do. I am going to make sure to do my best so that I don’t disappoint you,” added the actor who has been announced the brand ambassador of Ziox Smartphone.

“Chanda Mama Door Ke” is directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, and will release in January 2018. Apart from that, Sushant is also doing “Drive” directed by Tarun Mansukhani.

As far as endorsement of a brand is concerned, Sushant was asked if he follows any rules.

He said he would never endorse a fairness cream as he doesn’t support brands which discriminate.

“Whenever I get an offer, I always see what a brand stands for as it is a very important thing for me. What a brand stands for is crucial for me. There are a few things I would never endorse — one would be fairness cream… I wouldn’t do it. I don’t support any kind of brands that discriminate.”

  13. Box Office: Jab Harry Met Sejal Is The Biggest Commercial Disappointment Of 2017
He hasn’t made anything which is wildly disliked.
    By
    Joginder Tuteja –
    August 11, 2017

There have been flops and disasters in the past and there would be flops and disasters in months to come as well. However, the failure of Jab Harry Met Sejal has been more disheartening than anything else in the past. Reason being that one just could not foresee anything starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead to see such a rapid downfall. He is one superstar who has built the kind of credibility over last 25 odd years that invariably there has been universal content on display film after film. It isn’t as if each of his films has been super awesome or wildly entertaining – however, he hasn’t made anything which is wildly disliked.

That streak has been broken though by Jab Harry Met Sejal which has just not found an audience for itself. Period. The film didn’t take a mega opening, couldn’t find any traction over the weekend, fell even on a partial holiday [Rakhi] and then had a super crash during rest of the weekdays. One just hasn’t seen this kind of a response for a superstar flick in a really-really long time and what is all the more disappointing is that this has happened when the industry is going through its worst phase at the Box Office.

  14. Imtiaz Ali directed Jab Harry Met Sejal has turned out to be the biggest high profile disaster of 2017. The film saw mere Rs. 60 crore* coming in its first week and that was definitely not a number that could have been imagined by anyone in the wildest of their dreams. The film has been rejected, and how, and this was demonstrated in the free fall that it experienced right through the weekdays.

There is one more fact that needs to be considered; the film does not have disastrous content as the collections may indicate. Yes, the film was disappointing, no two words about it. However, the kind of crash that it has seen and the general avoidance from the audience is unprecedented. It is as if there was a large segment of audience out there which was just waiting for a film to be panned big time and Jab Harry Met Sejal came across as one such film which could be used as a punching bag.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan managed to 12.50 crore nett in its second week which is actually better than Tubelight which was a far bigger film but the overall total for the film is still a low 47.50 crore nett. Its decent to get 12.50 crore nett in week two against a big release like Jab Harry Met Sejal but the problem is you really can’t cover the loss of the first week especially in terms of shares. The drop is 65% which is also a lot for a film which had a poor first week.

The film could now finish at around 53-55 crore nett which is higher than Half Girlfriend but Mubarakan is also a bigger film than Half Girlfriend. Below are the top ten second weeks of 2017. (All collections for Hindi language only)

  18. Don’t want to clog the box-office thread since I know there will be many, many comments this week & hence writing this comment here.

I have to say I just don’t buy this narrative that social media is hugely responsible for the failure of JHMS. The film hasn’t worked; plain and simple. That this ‘ruling govt’ has an organized cyber-mob going after SRK even in 2017 is hogwash. Is this cyber-mob so intelligent that it left out RAEES and DZ since they had a premonition that the films wouldn’t do well anyway? Why was the cyber-mob dormant for FAN, RAEES, and DZ? Were they so kind that they ‘let go’ of Gauri Shinde’s film since hers would be an ‘art’ film anyway? How did RAEES [with a Pakistani heroine to boot] and FAN get close to 20 crore opening [https://www.bollyarena.net/raees-1st-day-box-office-collection/] and not JHMS? Intolerant Aamir’s film DANGAL raked in 345 crore or whatever the final figure: Or is the explanation going to be that since the film talked about a ‘Hindu’ Indian going all out to win a medal for India is the main cause for DANGAL to be welcomed and savored with open arms?

The film has problems galore as reviews have pointed out. It ends up neither here nor there; it satisfies none and that’s the fundamental problem. I watched this film FD evening show inspite of the reviews because I believe Imtiaz’s films fall on the other-end of being review-proof, i.e., not because they have Salman or Rajinikanth in them but because there ARE folks lime me and umpteen others who want to watch them and prefer for sheer personal joy and pathos. I found none of it here. There was a Marathi-speaking family sitting beside me in the last row in DC and they were yawning and cursing in the interval and left the theater when there was about 30 minutes still remaining in the movie. Why would they come there? A family of 10 that buys the tickets and pays around 100$ and then just walks out without even seeing the film in its entirety? Just because of an WhatsApp forward? What are the chances that this very family would have walked out and recommended a strict ‘NO’ to all their friends in the week-end gathering? Chances are high, right?

Z has actually been the one that’s been quite negative [in the sense pessimistic] about this film; and his fear turned out to be true! And I on the contrary had been very positive and review-shunning till the FD evening show on this though it starred SRK, a sure-shot no-favorite of mine! Even Master says this is Ali’s weakest film! Don’t these pointers mean something?

The ‘outright’ rejection can mean a lot of things; first and foremost, it clearly means WRONG expectations. That’s the root-cause here. I went in expecting a beautiful take on a man-woman relationship [not at the level of Mani but hell yes, a notch below that’s all]; other folks went in expecting maybe a tad-serious swing on SRK’s past-romance sojourns with an Imtiaz flavoring. None got anything.

And I am not denying the fact that there are or might be whatsapp forwards going on asking folks to boycott or whatever. But to conclude that an organized and sustained campaign resulted in such a loss other-wise the film would have been a decent success would tantamount to living in denial.

And that ‘logic’ of more vulgar and crass films having worked is a red-herring. This has happened through-out the history of the Indian film industry or any industry for that matter.

I sat for 15 minutes in the theater stunned in silence of DIL SE’s climax on the 3rd day wondering what the hell is it that folks didn’t complained about here, including my relatives!!!

It probably sounds prophetic now but go read my comments after the first couple teaser had came out. I had said, take out SRK and you’ll have hard time justifying this movie making 25 crore total.

I also do firmly believe that social media does play a role where if social media is positive on a good film, it can be perceived as great and if social media is negative on an average film, it can be perceived as a disaster.

Not having seen JHMS, but I assume it failed because of one reason and one reason only. It’s not a good film.

      • Strictly about JHMS, all I said was that it wasn’t that bad, so as to warrant so much negativity. and the rest is as Z explained, ‘if social media is negative on an average film, it can be perceived as a disaster’

I been following SRK for a long time now, I have never seen a film of his universally liked..all reviews have been this range or slightly better always..but still most of them were pulled to safety except a few.

I never said crass, vulgar films ran..what i meant was JHMS was nothing of that sort for people to be an assault on senses. But social media made it look that way, and I have seen hundreds of msgs saying, thanks to you, we dropped our plans to watch it..

Cyber army, is not fiction. whether they are targeting any particular hero, is anybody’s guess. But given some pet hates and preferences, chances are.

Aamir always had this nationalist image.. so, what he said was shocking..and becos of that he was targeted then and lost some deals. but still, dangal came an year later and he had dollops of patriotism, even adding things which never happened to buffer any negativity. and of course it came with the so called prestige of successful films before. And it was well liked. But wait until some weakness hit.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Jab Harry Met Sejal has been rejected outright and is a flop film with collections of 58 crore nett apprx in the first week. The weekend was under expectations at 44 crore nett but the film just dropped off over the weekdays and added only 14 crore nett over thw Mon-Thu period.

It has not done well in any circuit across in India with even West Bengal where Shahrukh Khan films tend to get numbers even if the content is not there has not performed this time. East Punjab is the worst performer considering there are big multiplexes in the circuit where the film would have collected.

    • Akshay is the backbone of this satire. His inner journey as an actor pays dividends and he delivers yet another topnotch performance. Half a star in the rating is rightfully his. Bhumi is perfect in her rendition of the feisty Jaya and Divyendu is a terrific comic. The presence of veterans, Pandey and Kher, is unmissable. The screenplay is peppered with loads of LOL moments balanced correctly with emotional outbursts. As bonus, you get a hummable soundtrack with Hans Mat Pagli, Bakheda and Gori Tu Lath Maar.

So whether you have pressing matters to attend to or not, please take a detour to this toilet. Each of us needs to raise a stink about what our countrymen do in the open.

Akshay Kumar has been reinventing himself for each new role in all of his recent Bollywood films, be it Airlift, Rustom, Jolly LL.B 2 or Housefull 3. These films have all done exceptionally well and garnered a great following for the actor. But Toilet Ek Prem Katha stands out in between all of them and is also a crucial film for the Bollywood box office.

A unique romance set in a remote small town with a strong social subject backing it, the film has a vast audience base at its disposal. Toilet Ek Prem Katha is also Bhumi Pednekar’s second film after Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The film trailers and songs have been entertaining and there is a lot of expectation pinning on to the film.

Well, the film is open to the audiences today and the reviews by Desimartini viewers are already pouring in. This is what the audiences feel about Akshay’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha.

  25. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has nothing lofty but is unapologetically patriotic

The patriotism in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is primarily furthering one of the most widely publicised social change campaigns of the government, even as the rural hero exposes some of the pitfalls of the scheme

In movies, love of country is a rapturously virtuous thing. Can military valour be simply difficult to muster, or simply end in tragedy? It often is and does in conflict zones off screen; in an ideal world, conquests or martyrdom need not always measure military intelligence. Film-makers usually bypass that ambiguity—unless he or she is a Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk, 2017) or a Terrence Malick (Thin Red Line, 1988). Ever since the invention of cinema, film-makers have used patriotism and military valour effectively, to rouse nationalistic emotions and make commercially lucrative cinema. Russian cinema is full of such examples, including the early films of Sergei Eisenstein.

Shree Narayan Singh’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha has nothing lofty about it, but it is unapologetically patriotic. It is riding on a particularly voluble strain of the country’s new-found, newly sanctioned patriotism: The Swachh Bharat campaign.

In Hindi movies, the idea of relinquishing an enemy—another country, colonisers from another century, or worlds populated by bearded men—is a relatively recent trope. The Noughties produced Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), followed by Maa Tujhe Salaam (2002), both brazenly anti-Pakistan and anti-Muslim, and both dependent on the faded machismo of Sunny Deol, and Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon (2004). This was around the same time that the national anthem started playing in cinema halls before the start of a movie in some states. At his best, the patriot in Hindi movies is a man, rarely a woman, who is progressive and liberal, who believes in the pluralistic image of the Indian nation. His motto is unity in diversity. This kind of patriotism permeated stories during the first two decades of film-making after independence—Shaheed (1948), Jagriti (1954), Naya Daur (1957), Mother India (1957), Hum Hindustani (1960), Haqeeqat (1964), among others. The vigilante that Amitabh Bachchan unleashed on screen in the 1970s and 1980s through films such as Zanjeer (1973), Deewar (1975) and Coolie (1983) took the idea of social justice to the streets.

The patriotism in Toilet Ek Prem Katha is primarily in furthering one of the ruling government’s most widely publicised social change campaigns, even if the rural hero exposes some of the scheme’s pitfalls. Anupam Kher, a BJP sympathiser, plays a character akin to the real life hero of India’s sanitation crusade, Bindeshwar Pathak. It is the love story of a man played by Akshay Kumar who has to save his marriage by ensuring there are toilets in his village. The goofy protagonist turns activist-vigilante. There’s no better time to release a film about sanitation miseries than now; the producers can leverage the Swachh Bharat brand equity for all its pre-release marketing requirements.

The Hindi film aristocracy and its influencers are usually apolitical. Its stars don’t engage with the country’s malaises, its political misgivings or social misfortunes. Nobody has a stand on what’s happening outside Juhu or Bandra, let alone Mumbai. A majority of the screenplays that pass muster are apolitical too. But if the only way to engage with social realities and being political is to piggyback on campaigns of the ruling government, politics are best left out of Hindi movies.

In the conventional sense of movie patriotism, Toilet Ek Prem Katha is almost a cipher. The enemy is within; in regressive, irrational Indian thinking. The hero’s goal is domestic fulfilment, and his fight is not for a free community or a nation, or to defeat a dangerous enemy, but for a decent, sheltered pot to do one’s daily business of defecating in. In another time, this hero, a sort of Everyman patriot, would have been wonderfully refreshing. Now he is too much of a Swachh Bharat mouthpiece.

Last year, Russia’s ministry of culture published a list of eight subjects that film producers might want to address if they hope to win grants from the state. Besides “traditional values”, the list included “the constructive actions of civil society”. All that’s needed from Russian film-makers now is the willingness to hop on board—just like the makers of Toilet Ek Prem Katha has done, without being asked to do so.

Toliet Ek Prem Katha has taken a fair opening of around 20-25% with better collections outside the metros. The film has opened better than Jolly LLB 2 in places like Rajasthan and Gujarat but the collections are lower than that film in the metros. The small town setting and on top no toilet holds little relevance for the high end multiplex audience so that is why the opening is lower in the metros but this where the content has to work to bring in the audience over the weekend and then get a boost over the holiday period. It is a content film with no action or big music and the scale is also small and on that this is the sort of start that can be expected.

The weekend audience is all important for these type of films and if the metro audience comes in tomorrow then the film is likely to do well at the box office. The initial suggests that North India and Central circuits especially Rajasthan and CI are likely to perform best.

The biggest advantage for the film is a big holiday for Independence Day om Tuesday and smaller releases next week which are not really competition for a film like Toliet Ek Prem Katha. Its all about good or even decent public reports and the industry will get some respite with a winner from this huge dull period since the release of Tubelight. .

    • Nicely summed up here by Khaleej Times –

The first half of the film is crisp and tightly packed but the same can’t be said about the other half. After interval, the film tends to get a bit preachy but that is expected if you have a much-debatable topic like open defecation to be addressed. It might feel a bit predictable but it is not something you can’t sit through. Neeraj Pandey, after his last film, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story doesn’t disappoint with this one.

Overall, it is a good entertainer which leaves you with a food for thought after you exit the movie hall. Yes, you might hear the word ‘ toilet’ multiple times throughout the film but you will soon get comfortable with it. Go for the film, if you are looking for a well-scripted film backed by power-packed performances by the actors.

Distributor Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz reportedly lost almost Rs. 60 crore over the failure of Jab Harry Met Sejal and Tubelight

Speaking to mid-day, he said, “We haven’t received any money from Salman Khan. All these reports about distributors receiving money, are false.”

However, Hirawat is confident that Salim Khan will honour his word. “I have worked with them many times and we have always been on good terms. Salim saab has promised to compensate us for the loss. I’m confident they will do it. Whenever it happens, I will inform everyone about it.”

When asked if he expects a similar move from Shah Rukh Khan, he said, “The movie has not lived up to the expectations, because of which we have suffered a huge loss. Like Salman, I have worked with Shah Rukh in the past too. He is a nice person. I hope we get some kind of compensation for Jab Harry Met Sejal too, but it is all up to them [the producers]. As of now, there hasn’t been any word on it.”

We reached out to Salim Khan, who asserted that Salman Khan Films will soon provide the compensation, as promised. The celebrated screenwriter said, “Ek baar jo humne commitment kar di hai, toh woh patthar ki lakeer hai. We haven’t returned the money yet, as it takes time to calculate the amount. Many people are involved, so, it can’t be done overnight. We will definitely return the money.”

    • Waah! Salman Khan PAYS 50 Per Cent Losses Of Tubelight! Star Ho Toh Aisa!

“It has happened. The man has kept his promise. Salman Khan will compensate the losses incurred by the distributors (and some exhibitors) over his last film Tubelight- to the tune of 50 per cent

Remember Salman Khan’s dialogue from Wanted: Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, fir main apne aap ki bhi nahi sunta?

Toh Salman ne faisla kar liya hai. The superstar will compensate the distributors and exhibitors who lost money owing to his last film Tubelight failing to set the cash registers ringing. The superstar will pay the decided amount mostly by tonight or tomorrow.

The team of distributors led by Narendra Hirawat (who had reportedly bought the film for Rs 130 crore) is meeting his team in this regard in a few hours from now.

Before deciding on the number, a brief meeting was held by Team Salman Khan Productions at Salman’s Galaxy Apartments.
Adds the source, “50 per cent is a mighty good number. Salman and family have justifiably added more goodwill for themselves.”

Many people from the trade then felt that the Khan-daan may not honour their commitment since they had not spelt out the extent of compensation they would offer.

But this Khan-daan is Khan-daani, its members stick to their word.

Bravo! Salman, Salim Saab, Amar Butala and Aman Gill deserve a pat on their back.

  38. an excerpt from IE review – “The film which has to contend with a clunky title in the first place, wastes much of its initial bits in creating a romance between the middle-aged Keshav (Akshay) and the sprightly Jaya (Pednekar)” – now this is something where Aamir excels at script level. In Dangal, he could have easily prolonged his young age screen-time by showing some romance or something else, but he is so honest to script and didn’t divert from the main subject. Sallu also failed there in Sultan and TL. SRK still thinks that he can be a youth-romance-icon. So no one is seeing the writing on the wall except aamir.

Esha Gupta has finally hit back at the slut-shamers posting horrible comments on her recent Instagram posts. The actor, who shared several pictures from a lingerie photoshoot over the past few weeks, said her pictures were aesthetically shot and there wasn’t anything vulgar about them.

In an interview to Times of India, she talked about why people were posting perverted comments on her photos and still shaming her for shooting in underwear. “In our country, women are eternally blamed. They are accused when a girl child is born, they are even accused when they are raped. So, somewhere I knew that I will also have to face a lot of heat. After all, it’s easy for some faceless and redundant people to pull a celebrity down at the first opportunity. I’ve done shoots like this one when I was a model. I’ve gone topless and naked, too. No one ever asked me about that. And who are these people who have ‘issues’ with my pictures?,” she said.

It’s not like we’re saying how did this good well made movie flop. What’s flopping right now are bad films.

For SRK, a decent film like Chalte Chalte would work today too. But a bad film will not work no matter when it’s released.

Ra.One didn’t work back then (after first few days), it won’t work today, plain and simple.

It will get worse and worse for many films as people read reviews prior to watching a film and the point I made about social media.

There are couple of interesting comments there which make a lot of sense esp on the promotion part where it’s gotten not only excessive but repetitive and stars do nothing but just promote and promote …

” The problem is the over promotions, it really pisses a person off and by the time the movie releases everyone is tired of the actors. Marketing teams need to try something different. A

-I love romantic movies. I also think men are not good at writing rom-coms. The best films like -You’ve Got Mail, Bridget Jones’ Diary, When Harry met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, One Fine Day, Pride and Prejudice – basically the movies I can just keep watching over and over again were ALL written by women !! Bollywood has marginalized women filmmakers and the result is bad movies.

-Baahubali 2 has changed the face of Indian cinema forever . Mediocrity is no longer acceptable.”

  55. Toilet Ek Prem Katha Has Decent First Day
    Saturday 11 August 01.30 IST

Toliet Ek Prem Katha has had a decent business on day one with collections around 11.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The numbers are very similar to Jolly LLB 2 which released early this year. A year that has been for opening days now has seven films above 10 crore nett and they Bahubali – The Conclusion, Tubelight, Raees, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and not Toilet Ek Prem Katha. The figures of Badrinath Ki Dulhania are 11.68 crore nett and Toilet Ek Prem Katha could edge past when morning collections come in.

The film did not look a 10 crore nett opening film in the morning with just a fair start but it made ground post afternoon shows in all circuits barring the South. This should enable the film to have an upward trend on Saturday and a good jump will put it on to the road of success. The opening day collections of the film may well be below Jab Harry Met Sejal but it has beaten that film in many circuits. The only big differences are South India and West Bengal. The film has performed better in UP, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan and even the final East Punjab number could come out higher. In terms of Jolly LLB2 the 50 odd lakh gap between them is because of Delhi / UP and East Punjab and that film had a wider release.

    • As far as opening day goes, whether one goes with BOI (12 cr) or producer total (13 cr), it is in the same range as Jolly LLB 2. IF it trends similarly it should do 47-50 cr over the weekend. And if that happens it will have a fair chance to do 100-110 cr total. As per addatoday, the WOM is also at the same level as Jolly LLB 2.

The infamous worst phase of Bollywood – 2017 has officially now new addition to the list. Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal is nothing but a huge disappointment for everyone. After having a very poor week 1, the film has crashed further on its 2nd Friday.

The talks are everywhere about how the era of superstars have come to an end and Jab Harry Met Sejal proved how the real king is content. Neither the film opened on a high note nor it managed to stay stable on weekdays. The collection of the film fell faster than a house of cards.

The film grossed a mere 58.40 crores* in its 1st week turning out to be Shah Rukh Khan’s lowest week one in recent years. The film has collected 80 lacs* on its 2nd Friday at the box office. It now stands at the total of 59.20 crores after its 2nd Friday.

Yes, the film faced a competition from Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha but still the collections are too poor to defend. From here 70 crores mark to seems to vanish for this film.

Mubarakan on other side is holding well and should be a concern for already struggling Jab Harry Met Sejal. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has opened on a decent note and is all set to show jump on weekends. It also has an extra advantage of Independence Day on Tuesday.

Jab Harry Met Sejal had a huge drop on its eighth day as it collected just 75 lakhs nett. These sort of low numbers have not been seen for a Shahrukh Khan film in a very long time. Even Fan managed to do over 10 crore nett in the second week which has no chance of happenning here. The weekend here is probably looking around 3 crore nett and the last time a Shahrukh Khan film had a second weekend which was so low was way back in 2005 with Paheli. The collections of Jab Harry Met Sejal till date are as follows

    First Week – 58,00,00,000 apprx

Second Week – 75,00,000 apprx (Friday)

    Grand Total – 58,75,00,000

Mubarakan is holding up with low collections as its third Friday came at 50% less than the second Friday. Its done pretty to get here considering its very low first day and competiton of big films in its second and third week but thats about it. the Overall figures remain low due to that poor initial. The collections of Mubarakan till date are as follows.

    First Week – 35,00,00,000

    Second Week – 12,50,00,000

    Third Week – 50,00,000 (Friday)

    Grand Total – 48,00,00,000

Toilet Ek Prem Katha grossed 12 crore nett apprx on its first day as collections improved as the day went along. The best figures for the film are in UP and Bihar while West Bengal and Nizam are worst performers. The collections are lower than Rustom which released at the same time last year and even Brothers which released two years back but Toilet Ek Prem Katha is a more content driven film from those films and more about what it does after the first day. Below are the first day openers of Akshay Kumar releases over the last 20 months or so and they are all in a similar range

    • Mubarakan is really unlucky it seems. It’s a prime example of a film without enough star power to withstand competition but good WOM to stay afloat at low levels. If not for JHMS and TEPK it would have scored higher. But it’s not high profile enough to retain screens.

And JHMS is woefully embarrassing now.

No pre release for journals will probably be common. Otherwise ticket prices must fall at some point.

But when ppl really get to know what is it actually, it may fall again. It’s rather like, in cricket, if you fix an outcome, you can throw away a wkt, catch or a run out and lose the game also, but you cant bet to win it.

“He also once compared Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan to terrorist leader Hafiz Saeed and asked him to go to Pakistan. Mr. Adityanath had said that Shah Rukh Khan should remember that if a “huge mass” of people in the country would boycott his films then he would also have to wander on streets like a “normal Muslim“.

Here, we are talking about Yogi Adityanath, who has been made a chief minister in our country..him and many other BJP leaders have had venomous attacks on shahrukh before. I cant remember Salman ever having to hear such things, rather BJP has treated him well, his court case has been squashed isn’t it? Remember him doing a mini promotion for Modi before elections?

The talk here was not of JHMS doing bad..it was about how many of SRK’s recent films underperformed..I am just wondering the period of time this is happening is coinciding with another significant shift in this countrty. Let it not be, I also will prefer it that way.

The basic premise was weak; Anushka’s character quite unbelievable and slightly irritating. Mid-way through the film it seemed to me like a lost boat / ship trying to find anchor. The girl next to me jumped out of her seat the second the credits got over. She ran for the door; we followed, laughing at her action.

“I don’t write keeping an actor in mind. Only after I have finished my writing, I start to think about who would be the best person to play that role. And if he or she is willing to play that role then he or she is definitely worth the wait,” Tiwari, who bagged the Best Director award for “Dangal” in Melbourne, told IANS.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha has broken the bad run and is a winner at the box office. Its been a horrible period over than last 10 weeks or so and the verdicts below will explain more than words. The films in the list are all which had awareness and were market and non can be called small films.

    Tubelight – Below Average

    Mom – Flop

    Jagga Jassos – Flop

    Munna Micheal – Flop

Mubarakan – Flop (possible Below Average)

Jab Harry Met Sejal – Flop

Toilet Ek Prem Katha is doing very good business on Saturday and the collections should hit 15.50 crore nett and may possibly even 16 crore nett. The growth is going to be over 35% and more than the growth number, it is coming in the correct regions of North and Mumbai. Sometimes films have growth but internally the growth is in regions where you know it wont really last in the long run.

The film is on course to be a HIT film but it is always Monday that rubber stamps the fate of the film. The film will bring a little more confidence into the industry and now the big films of September Baadshaho and Judwaa 2 can hopefully carry this through.

  70. Watched Toilet. This is absolute winner. Movie started with light and hilarious moments having witty dialogues. Village setting and accent is quite fun to watch. With pleasing background music, movie started on very positive note. It thrilled audience that they gonna see something unique and entertaining. Right from romance till Akshay’s marriage, first 45 minutes are fun filled and class apart. After that it shifted towards core issue of open deification. It looked little awkward for initial few minutes as audience is not really aware about any such community really exist in India who are against having toilet at home. But narration is so powerful that it convinced audience about this issue and intermission point struck the right chords. Post intermission, movie is more serious and preachy, but it still engaged the audience till end. There are some very powerful moments, which stays with you for long time. I will give special mention to music, after long time we have songs which despite giving break to story, are enjoyable at their own. Specially ‘Lath Maar’ and ‘Has mat pagli’ , are wonderful.Double thumbs up !! Recommended !!

Movie has repeat value, because you take home so many moments that there are chances you may want to relive it again. Movie has potential to surprise everyone with great boxoffice rewards, 110 Crore to kahin nahi gaye .. but its range is very high, It has chances to be Akshay’s highest grosser.

In fact the film’s first Saturday is better than what Jab Harry Met Sejal had collected on its second day [Rs. 15 crore].

Toilet Ek Prem Katha is set to be a winner at the box office as it did excellent business on Saturday in the 17 crore nett range. The bad since run Bahubali – The Conclusion has been broken and this film will do very well. The growth is phenomenal in North and Gujarat / Saurashtra and this ensures a big run for for the film. Although you always wait for Monday but the way Delhi and big cities have grown in Punjab it looks set for a long run as these places sustain very well. There will be expectations of huge growth again on Sunday but that could be curtailed a little because of this Saturday growth. Sunday growth should be more of the normal tyep. 74. Toilet Ek Prem Katha Creates History Of Its Own
    Sunday 13 August 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Toilet Ek Prem Katha has created history of its own as no film which has collected over 10 crore nett on day one has ever shown this much growth on day two. The collections on Saturday are an apprx number of 17 crore nett but on this the film has shown growth of 45%. This is unheard of for films at this level. There are films which collected 4 or 5 crore nett which show growth of over 50% like a Neerja and Pink and others but these films have low numbers are are only catering to a minority so the growth can easily come. Here with Toilet Ek Prem Katha its 2000 theatres and to get this sort of growth is unbelievable. If you get 20% growth for a film collecting 10 crore nett plus its a big achievement and here its more than double that.

The closest example is Tanu Weds Manu Returns which grew 48% but this film collected under 10 crore nett at 8.75 crore nett and went to 13 crore nett on Sunday which is 48.5% growth. Again these are lower numbers so the lower the numbers go then higher growth is possible. Obviously this is not including the occasions when the second day is a holiday as then anything is possible. The importance of growth is also the right areas because sometimes films show growth but internally you know its in the areas which can struggle on Monday as they dont sustain well and it is not the case here. The film has the potential to go anywhere.

    How the list was curated

Naturally, the task of selecting just 70 films is daunting. Kamal Haasan clarifies that he is not a film scholar. “I can only choose from the films I have seen,” says the actor with four National Awards under his belt. “And naturally I have not seen every good film.” He says he can only include films that changed his life, as a man, as an actor. “This is not a bucket list – 70 films you should see before you die. I’m not trying to recommend movies, or impose my choices on other people. Films are my profession, my life. The way I react to a film will be different from the way other people would. I’m sure I will probably notice nuances other people may not. Finally, it’s like falling in love! Why do you fall in love with someone? Who knows? It’s the same with movies.”

    Q. Top 5 actors currently?

    A. Current standing – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan.

    Q. Which one is bigger flop Tubelight or JHMS

    A. Jab Harry Met Sejal.

    Q. Which actors does corporate bookings? How to calculate real value of opening for such actors?

    A. Most big films. It’s difficult to calculate the exact amount, it’s still ticket sales.

    Q. Why isn’t Akshay Kumar films opening on Day 1?

    A. It isn’t a cause for concern as long as his films do well. Akshay Kumar is now becoming a Saturday – Sunday star more than Friday morning. His films are not getting an initial on Friday, but the city audience is coming out in much bigger numbers than ever before on Saturday and Sunday. This could be because of the kind of films he’s doing. Hardcore commercial entertainers like Rowdy Rathore are Friday morning films. Airlift, Rustom, Toilet etc are less commercial, more story/content drive. They get their best day on the last two days of the weekend. The risk with the multiplex city audience is, if the film is not good, they’ll reject it. On the other hand, without the support of multiplexes, films can’t recover their costs. So it’s all about balance in today’s times. Only films that have something in it for everyone will go on to become big grossers.

    Q. I’ve looked up your list of actors about their movie collections & verdict in that list SRK had zero disasters registered to his name, so is JHMS SRK’s first disaster or is it just a flop?

    A. Jab Harry Met Sejal is a humongous disaster. The domestic distributors share of the film is going to be less than 30 crore, which is about one-fourth of the landing cost. We have to be looking at the loss incurred by the distributors. If pre-release producer profit is taken into consideration, then a film is a winner even if it collects 10 crore at the domestic box office.

Distributor recovery is most important. Also, when you sell a film for a high price, give it a proper showcasing and it has such a big star cast – it has to collect a certain amount. 65-70 crore lifetime is what films like Dear Zindagi are earning and they were sold for a very low price compared to Jab Harry Met Sejal. Such films also have zero satellite value. JHMS is all round failure and there’s no question of defending the genre or ‘nicheness’ of the film either. If the film is niche and has limited audience, you need to plan the budget accordingly and then sell it for a price that justifies. You can’t be setting it up as a commercial blockbuster, get the price you want and then try to create perception that audience is limited for such films.

    Q. With so many factors going in TEPK favour, superb trailer, good promotion, Akki’s successful streak with good scripts. What will it take for Akshay to give excellent openings he constantly use to give in mid 2000s?

    A. The trailer was good, but apart from that not much worked in favour of the film. The music did not work, which is important for films to get initial at smaller centres. Promotional campaign was mainly internet centric. The political angle may not really convert into ticket sales. As for the opening, we’ve answered a similar question above. It looks like a change in trend. Audience for Akshay films are coming on Saturday and Sunday, not Friday morning – which is usually the single screen audience or hardcore fans of the actor. Akshay isn’t really doing the kind of films that appeals to his core fan base at smaller towns.

    Q. What is the future project of Hrithik Roshan and what is the current status of super 30 and Krrish 4?

    A. No update. A rumoured Hrithik Roshan film and him officially signing the film, is comparable to the beginning and end of a marathon. Most of his rumoured films, don’t happen. And sometimes even the films that he’s at the last stage of finalisation, fall through. Krrish 4 is happening, but there’s time.

    Q. Who is the best comedy movies director. Rohit Shetty, Anees Bazmee, David Dhawan, Priyadarshan, arrange them according to your view.. All have blockbuster movies on Comedy Genre.

    A. Our pick in order of preference. David Dhawan, Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmee, Rohit Shetty.

Lol, they behaving as if JHMS is sold for Tubelight prices which is twice the prices. Tubelight was sold for 135 crs whereas JHMS was sold for 65 crs for India. How was JHMS sold for the price they want and aiming for commercial blockbuster?

  82. BOI has 21 cr Sunday for TEPK, which is again a great jump from Saturday. The producer number will be around 22-23 cr, which puts the weekend at 50-53 cr range. It is in the same range as that of Rustom and Jolly LLB 2. Considering it has the Independence Day holiday in the middle of the first week, its likely to trend more like Rustom than Jolly LLB 2. That should take it to 125-130 cr total.

I dont think 200 cr is a possibility here at all. If it is liked much better than Rustom/Jolly LLB 2, then it can perhaps breach the 150 cr milestone, which would be the best case scenario from here.

JHMS has crashed completely in second weekend. BOI has it at 2.75 cr second weekend. Its going to old up at 62-65 cr it seems. What a disaster!

      • And more importantly second week will be the deciding actor as far as lifetime total of TEPK is concerned. Akshay films usually dont show good trending week two onward. This one will get to 90 cr in week one like Airlift IMO, but we will have to see how it goes after that.

I think recent flops are helping TEPK. Audience expectations have gone down with the series of lops, which is helping TEPK to get better WOM than it perhaps deserves. This may have boosted the opening, in which case the subsequent trending may not be as great as the growth over the weekend suggests.

    • It is great to see Akshay getting another Hit, specially with a topic like this. After JHMS and TEPK, one has to accept that Akshay is now ahead of SRK in current star standings.

August seems to be a great release month for Akshay. Last August Rustom was a hit while Mohenjodaro was a bonafide disaster. Now JHMS is a disaster, and TEPK is on its way to be a Hit. Constant progress of Akshay, at the expense of other’s downfall.

Any legit bollywood ranking should now place Akki right at the top of the slot. This is as consistent as consistency can get in bollywood. These results are simply out of the box and rarely achievable if one looks at the box office earnings of rest of the actors barring Aamir and Salman who now come with their own limitations.Salman does 4 other things in a year so some sort of immunity can be granted there. With time Aamir is getting more selective / over particular with his choices and with these one off deals he be best advanced to Bachchan category and left to his own devices devoid of any ranking/ standing.

For SRK time has finally come to level up with this absolute failure of an audience friendly and scintillating assist from Anuskha @ JHMS. He has been getting away with mediocre outings since OSO days but minimum guarantees at the box-office have kept him in the running but now things have finally caught up and the accumulated capital and goodwill has waned to naught. For him it’s time to perform or perish since even these min benchmarks are now under threat. As Krish wrote sometime back he is not a fast learner, but I would say it has something to do with his inbuilt arrogance to prove everyone wrong and be considered more world wisely. Well, this attitude is what made him and took him up but now will be his undoing if left uncorrected. His interview to Masand few years back that he wants to do more of the same if he is told not to was very off-putting to watch and listen. In fact just last year he was ridiculing few industry personalities on twitter who praised him for a Swades & CDI and how they’re longing to see him to do such roles…..

Learning is part of human nature since our early existence because it is a necessity for survival. Evolution made us the ultimate learning machines……we learn from our mistake but a good 10 years from OSO I see no way out for him unless he gets to the nitty gritties and grinding to turn the turnstiles again.

  83. Toilet Ek Prem Katha Scores In First Weekend
    Monday 14 August 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Toilet Ek Prem Katha had a good weekend as it grossed 50 crore nett apprx over its first weekend. The opening day was on the average to decent side but the film came into its own on the weekend. The growth was a huge 45% on Saturday and it consolidated on Sunday. On Sunday the film was doing well all over, even circuits like Mysore and West Bengal crossed 1 crore nett. West Bengal was 1.01 crore nett on Sunday, a figure that could not be achieved by Jab Harry Met Sejal on any day and this is the strongest Shahrukh Khan circuit and the weakest circuit for Akshay Kumar. The weekend collections of Toilet Ek Prem Katha are as follows.

    Friday – 11,71,00,000

    Saturday – 17,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 21,25,00,000 apprx

    Grand Total – 50,00,00,000

The trend has been excellent over the weekend and now it is down to the crucial Monday to rubber stamp the success. It is going to be Wednesday which will give a better idea where the film is going but a decent Monday number will ensure that the film is a major HIT.

The second weekend collections are a little higher than Paheli (2005) but lower than Swades (2004). These are flop films over a decade back. The film is looking at a 62 crore nett close and a distributor share of 30 crore. Its a complete mess up by the director and how. The collections of Jab Harry Met Sejal till date are as follows

    First Week – 57,63,00,000

    Friday – 75,00,000

    Saturday – 1,00,00,000

    Sunday – 1,00,00,000

    BySubhash K. Jha
    Aug 14, 2017 – 10:17 am IST

Now that the film is nearing completion, Salman Khan will be personally supervising the editing of Tiger Zinda Hai. Director Ali Abbas Zafar has no objections over Salman’s collaborative spirit. In fact he welcomes it.

Says a source close to the development, “After the failure of Tubelight, Salman is not taking any chances. There were many points on which Salman Khan disagreed with director Kabir Khan but he gave in to Kabir’s decision. But this time Salman will make sure that Tiger Zinda Hai is edited as per his own vision of the film.”

In fact sources say Salman Khan has gradually been inching towards the technical side of filmmaking. Dabangg 2 which Arbaaz directed was personally edited by Salman.

Close friends of Salman Khan say he is “most definitely” going to direct a film soon.

After the news went viral, the only question which rose in everyone mind was that who’s behind the removal?

According to earlier reports, Pahlaj and other CBFC members misbehaved with the producer and director of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. Hence, they had filed a complained against the former chief. So were the makers of the film responsible for his removal as censor board cheif?

But, guys, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz makers are not behind the removal of Pahlaj Nihalani. If reports are to be believed it’s Ekta Kapoor. Earlier, Pahlaj Nihalani had created a huge trouble for Ekta Kapoor’s Lipstick Under My Burkha. He made sure that it didn’t hit the screens and thus, after a long fight, the movie was screened after a year of its initial release date.

Smriti Irani was elected as the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister around the same time when the controversy of Lipstick My Burkha was going on. Smriti Irani is a dear friend of Ekta Kapoor.

“For a very long time, Ekta Kapoor had been grumbling against Nihalani’s high-handedness. As luck would have it, Ekta Kapoor’s old buddy Smriti Irani was appointed the Minister of Information and Broadcasting around the same time when Lipstick Under My Burkha was taken by her for marketing and distribution,” a source told the daily.

“When the film was severely attacked by the CBFC, Ekta Kapoor expressed her displeasure to the new I&B Minister,” the source added.

Written by Ritesh Shah who’s writing credits include Pink and Airlift, RAID will be directed by Rajkumar Gupta who previously directed No One Killed Jessica. Casting for Devgn’s opponent and other important characters is underway.

Talking about the film, director Raj Kumar Gupta says, “RAID is a story that needs to be told on the big screen. I am looking forward to my collaboration with Ajay sir, Bhushanji, Kumarji and Abhishek on this film.”

A movie thats not much long, alternating between Dhanush walking in slo-mo, then Kajol walking in slo-mo. I wonder why Kajol went ahead and did it, she is shown as this high flying construction tycoon who is always at her wits end with the simplicity of Dhanush, who inspite of his painfully thin structure can take on half a dozen goons at same times. He is now married to Amala paul and their family scenes are the better portions of the movie.

A similar trend with TEPK’s 51 cr opening weekend will take it to 150 cr. That is how it will pan out IMO. For a movie made on a low budget of 18 cr, 150 cr nett (or so) will be amazing! It will also mean Akshay getting his highest grosser in a very different film.

  105. That amazingly high-speed juggernaut named Amitabh Bachchan refuses to slow down. In fact Mr Bachchan is now busier than ever. He reveals that he would be doing as many as 5 new feature films in the coming months. As soon as he wrapped up his work in Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan, Mr Bachchan plunges into the Sairat director Nagraj Manjule’s next.

Revealing his choc-a-block diary Mr Bachchan says, “Umesh Shukla’s 102 Not Out is over. I am now shooting for Kaun Banega Crorepati for the entire month of August. Then in September I will return to Thugs Of Hindostan. In October I will be shooting for Nagraj Manjule’s film. After that I go into Ayan Mukerji film (Dragon) to be produced by Karan Johar. Then I am doing a film with Kabir Khan, R Balki and Shoojit Sircar.”

How on earth does this phenomenally supercharged epitome of ageless energy intend to do so many projects?

Comes the response, “It’s all about time management. And please don’t ask me to slow down. I am not here to conquer peaks or design a formula for success. I am here to do a job. I need to work, I like to work and I am fortunate that there are some that consider me for work. In time nature shall diminish me and my body. But until it does so, I wish to continue!! You got a problem with that?”

    No, Sir! Keep them coming.

The latest one doing the rounds where he hurt himself is an audacious jump over the buildings. Khans are all bordering 54-55. Dharmendra turned 82 and just signed a movie. “…EW DELHI: The income tax department is “aggressively” pursuing names that emerged in the Panama Papers+ , including Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan+ , and has dispatched a top-level officer to the British Virgin Islands to access information, a senior official has said.
The British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean is considered to be among several tax havens. The tax department has launched 33 prosecutions linked to the names revealed in the Panama Papers and is probing others.
“There is no let-up in investigations. We are aggressively seeking information from other countries,” the official, who did not wish to be identified, told TOI. After Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif was removed by the country’s top court in connection with the Panama Papers case, there has been criticism that tax authorities in India are dragging their feet.

Asked whether information linked to the allegations against Bachchan was being pursued, the official said: “Mr Bachchan has said he does not own any of the firms named in the documents. So we just can’t launch a probe. We have to seek information.”

His comic timing was always an asset which was evident in his earlier films such as Chameli Ki Shaadi, Ram Lakhan & later in Deewana Mastana & Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate, yet directors have not been able to exploit fully this facet of his acting prowess.

  114. Toilet Ek Prem Katha 5th Day Box Office Collection
    08/15/201746

Toilet Ek Prem Katha 5th Day Box Office Collection:
Akshay Kumar’s latest release continues to roar big at the box office. The National holiday of Independence Day gave a huge boost to Toilet Ek Prem Katha collection especially in the first half of the day. As per the early estimates, Toilet Ek Prem Katha 5th day collection will be in the range of 20 crore.

TEPK has managed to tickle the bone of the audience and is faring excellently at the box office. After the opening weekend, it had an excellent hold on Monday and then got the benefit of the holiday on its first Tuesday. It has made it one of the best trending films of 2017. The trend is better than another Akshay starrer Rustom which released during Independence Day weekend last year.

The morning shows were higher as compared to yesterday and it literally went houseful in the noon shows. The North India rocked big time again where all shows were sold out even at the single screens. Later on, there were drops reported in the evening shows. Toilet Ek Prem Katha collection can fall further in the night as tomorrow is a working day.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha 5th day collection will be among the top 6 highest Tuesday collection ever in the history of Bollywood. Akshay Kumar has once again come to the rescue of Bollywood as TEPK is set to emerge a bit hit. The credit has to go the actor as TEPK was a small film, had no big director or heroine and music was average. Yet it has managed to end the dull phase at the box office.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha box office collection in 5 days will be over 83 crores. The first week is looking to be the highest ever for any Akshay Kumar starrer. It will be an extraordinary result overall. TEPK Tuesday collection is also the highest of this year but that would be unfair to compare as it was a holiday.

The drop on Wednesday will give us a clear picture that where this film will land in the final run. But the super strong trend has suggested that it will be highest grosser of Akshay Kumar and highest grosser of 2017 from Bollywood.

      08/15/201719

Jab Harry Met Sejal has underperformed in overseas markets too. The film has grossed $9.50 million in overseas till the second weekend.

JHMS had a bumper start in overseas as it set opening records in many territories. But the film has crashed badly on weekdays and it will not beat SRK starrer Raees which was not even overseas friendly. At best it can do $11 million which will be slightly better than Fan.

The worldwide gross is 146 crores which is too low for a big film. Overseas gross can cross domestic business which is a rare scenario.

      • It’s not a great film per se. It is for sure a bit uneven but still the overall result for a first-time director [am not sure if he is a first time director; correct me if I am wrong] is impressive. Akshay is truly believable and is treading on the path of some actors like Sanjeev Kumar or Vinod Khanna or Jeetenda [for example; their association with Gulzar] who had a ‘set’ of films that they owned. Not big block-buster movies like the combination of AB and Manmohan or Mehra but small gems that can be really enjoyed. Impressive thing here about Akshay is, except for Neeraj Pandey, I don’t think he has repeated the directors.

Yeah I agree that he is creating a similar legacy from the list of actors you mentioned. His last couple of films have been socially relevant…very curious to see how Padman will be received. I might give Jolly LLB 2 a watch also. Just going by the ‘prestige’ angle…that’s a helluva lineup of movies he is currently having.

Nothing to take away from Akshay but just read this comment and realized how a Bollywood outsider looks at the movies and one who is very well versed with inside trivia understands the news. Simply put.. both Rustom and Toilet are Neeraj Pandey’s movies directed by his assistants. Neeraj Pandey is very prominently displayed in Rustom and so much that even director is never mentioned in media whereas completely skipped in Toilet(recent rumors suggest some difference between rights) and Neeraj removed his name from the movie. Even Naam Shabana’s guest apperance is courtesy Neeraj Pandey. Similarly calling Pink movie other than Shoojit Sircar’s movie is incorrect, everywhere on the poster it is displayed prominently as Shoojit Sircar’s PINK (after Piku) which did the trick and interest in the audience. Such kind of ‘quiet’ directors are not really directors but just assistants or small time directors, it will take a while till they really get the credit. Shoojit Sircar almost ended up directing PInk and changed the whole second half into courtroom drama and worked with Amitabh on his character building. Amitabh signed the movie coz of Shoojit and no one else.

        • Another trivia: Anupam Kher so badly wanted to be part of this Swach Abhiyaan movie that Neeraj Pandey courtesy his relationship with Anupam created a dummy role and added him to the movie. Anupam being prime candidate for Modi didn’t wanted to miss this oppurtunity to be part of the movie. I haven’t seen the movie but anyone who has seen will know the role is added after the script is done and he is neither playing girl’s father nor hero’s father.

        • OK. At the nth moment I realized someone would latch on to that; I wanted to put in paranthesis though that I was SPECIFICALLY talking of directors and producers but just left it at that thinking it was obvious.

Yes I agree and understand I neither know nor am I invested in the ‘insider’ workings of Hi-fi. Now if the assertion here is that Akshay hasn’t really done variety but has just latched onto Neeraj Pandey and his ‘off-shoots’, I would still say that’s highly immaterial. BABY, AIRLIFT, NS [everybody knew that it would have a high BABY hangover, so I don’t think there’s any issue here — at least when it comes to his recent upping the ante with his performances.

And actually, let me be clear how it works for me at least. Whoever be the producer, I rarely go to a movie depending on him or her. I consider a PRODUCER nothing more than an office manager or an administrator with money wanting to make more money. [Again, pardon my ignorance if I seem simplistic.] I understand what you are trying to convey when you talk about the ‘influences’ in these cases since the producers were also story-tellers and directors in their own right.

I understand both TEKP and RUSTOM might have the invisible or visible blessings of NP, but Jolly LLB I believe was independent of his influence, and Akshay was bloody damn good in that.

And when I bring about the comparison with Gulzar, all I mean is a ‘body of work’ with a set of films; not necessarily restricted to the ‘patriotic’ genre. All the 3 Khan superstars — maybe barring Aamir to an extent; and that too dare I say with difficulty– can hardly be considered to fit in the films naturally as Akshay fits in. And it is really commendable that an actor who was considered wooden is actually fitting in so well in such films.

Next time there’s a director who wants to make a socially relevant or a director who wants a guy that can play a guy having a ‘kirana’ store in Kolhapur, guess what actor he would go to? And that, I believe, has been Akshay’s successes in recent times.

        • Akshay is phenomenal. I humbly raise a toast to his ability to play a simpleton and star with aplomb. He’s a star I’ve got massively wrong. He has a strong run of films now and his filmography is building up at a rapid rate. An explosive film at the box office will propel him further. He needs a big opener now. Everything is converging to Robot 2 for him as I see it. He deserves the recognition he craves.

I still don’t have him in the Salman, SRK, Aamir bracket. But no one is writing a box office story better than him now, probably barring Aamir. He’s a distant 4th (way ahead of anyone behind him) and ready to pounce on rankings but his cultural capital won’t budge out the big 3 as a historical matter.

However, as I said, it takes nothing away at all from Akshay’s success, and I think you yourself would agree.

And with regard to Anupam Kher latching on to TEPK, I find it strange that he would want to so desperately be a part of this movie when everyone knows that he’s part of BJP itself!! I don’t understand what it would ‘add’ upto, in the end scenario.

With regard to the ‘dummy’ role you talked about, I read in some review that the character’s role is actually based on some social worker; I forget the name now. You are quite efficient at google search, maybe you can let us know. And frankly, his role is hardly something that audiences are going to remember. He hardly has 2 minutes of ‘worth-while’ time in the movie.

C’mon An Jo you can do better than that considering your cerebral thought process visible on this blog. I feel being an adult now you must have seen enough of the world to understand regardless of what we do, our karma has no hold on us.

To be frank, I was conflicted when it comes to karma for a very long time till I crossed over to this side of the Atlantic and watched life a bit more closely. There is no divine retribution for those who have done wrong or as if the universe rewards those who behave the worse and punishes those who try to do things the right way. On a very practical basis you can hurt as many people as you want to and it will not come back to you. It is simply the truth. In fact, I would say that those who do hurt others may live a better life, as they have no problem hurting other people to get what they want.

You can attribute all that to kalyug but I would only add this on karma if you may that you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you allow. There is no “cosmic force” that determines your happiness. Only you can do that!

These are things one experiences and reacts to based on life’s experiences. There are superior, superior minds who have given up lives and pleasures to get answers and explore life’s meaningfulness and meaninglessness. My thoughts come as I read those books and venture to understand. I believe in some things and you don’t; if that answers all the questions you might have, good for you. They don’t for me, I seek.

Don’t wish to clog this blog with these things. These are personal mind-spaces and highly individual. As I said, if you have found all answers, glad for you. I haven’t, so will continue seeking.

  121. Current Star Ranking

No 1: Aamir Khan. With weak oppostition, Aamir now enjoys a good lead. He should however do a quickie before Thugs as one major hit from Salman and Aamir’s lead will disappear.

No 2: Salman Kahn. He has given strings of blockbuster to lead over Aamir, despite Aamir’s ATBBs. However Tubelight has take Sallu few steps back. Despite him covering up the losses of the Mumbai distributor (only), his stock is damaged and his next will be keenly observed.

No 3: Akshay Kumar. Finally he has done it with extraordinary Box office outcome of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. This is not his highest ranking. He did reach all time high of No 2 position (Many claim he became No 1 when SIK released) in 2007 as well and almost reached the level of the then No 1, SRK. Thereafter he faltered and Salman and Aamir zoomed far ahead, and SRK too gave Om Shanti Om same year. It looked all lost when Akshay chose to be tortoise in the race since last 2-3 years. Steady and consistent. Had to give No 3 to his hard work.

No 4: SRK. JHMJ is SRK’s biggest disaster since i know him. He has to really pull back now. More than the BO he has to recover the prestige he seems to have lost off late. This showed in JHMS.

    • A fair assessment Naveen though I will have Akshay as No 1 simply based on the variety and the number of films he is doing. I had put a longish comment earlier on these ranking. What pulls Akshay back is his threshold limit and unable to deliver something out of the box to get to the 200/250/300 cr. He can stake a claim on these numbers with 2.0 but he is the villain there and southern diaspora will eat him alive if he takes much credit.

On Salman here is a quick fact.

I am coining a new term to describe the current era – KKhan. (Kumar + the three Khans)
I am actually a big fan of KKhans.

I agree with above post that the record 11 hits of Salman is like the Australian Domination in cricket. Its difficult to achieve, though Aamir can do it but over longer period.

From die hard Amitabh Bachchan fan in childhood to Sanjay Dutt
(from Thaanedaar to Khalnaayak) and then Akshay Kumar ever since his Mohra became a hit. I somehow knew he has it in him if he wants or gets a good director. Since then i have found him doing something better every year. He could never meet the quality or hits of others but he showed improvement and worked as hard as anyone. For me these quality counts. One need not be No 1 to get a fan. Stardom lies in the eyes of the dreamer and I am one. 🙂

I have been a good fan of SRK films like Darr/Baazigar/KKHH/Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa/DevDas. Hence i will defend him and his films whenever they are trounced upon unreasonably.

I became Salman’s fan since Dabangg and Aamir Khan admirer after Rang De Basanti. It took me more time to understand Aamir Khan model. As you can see i always like Stars and for a long time it was difficult for me to accept Aamir as a big one as he never came across as star to me. But with his films, i realised that he is actually bigger than a star via his films. He is a package. You have to compare others with “his films and him” and not just him. This was new for me in Hindi film industry as noone in the past was ever like Aamir.

Coming back to rankings….it may be biased for Akki but never for / against any other star. I had kept Aamir at No 2 for ling and gave him No 1 only when Dangal broke all records. This caused many to dub my rankings as agendaic. But honestly before Dangal, Aamir despite his ATBB never actually stole the show over contemporaries, the way he did in Dangal and his contemporaries failing at the same time.

I will again be fair when Salman gives a big hit or a flop.

I believe any star can become No 1 if he gives more hits than contemporaries. So if one asks can Akshay become No 1, i will reply – why not?

Somehow i feel the same spark only in Ranbir Kapoor, Ranvir Singh and Varun Dhawan (in that order). I feel they will dethrone KKhan when they reach their 40s and Kkhan in 60s.

      • I remember Akshay Kumar from the first song that played on TV..I mean the first one I saw, ‘Khudko kya samajhta hai..’ with Ayesha Jhulka in a yellow frock..It was a college movie with Deepak Tijori as sidekick..which proceeds to be a murder mystery. wasnt that the first khiladi? And a hit also. Then he did a lot of nonsense films..and had a lot of affairs also. Mohra and Mein Khladi Tu Anadi as police roles did well. Was quite a hit pair with Shilpa Shetty..on and off screen I suppose. ‘Tu cheez badi hai..’ was such a big hit.

He used to be someone harmless who kept on having movies success or not..Mr.and mrs. Khiladi, international Khiladi, Aflatoon..a few films with Mamta Kulkarni.. I think Priyadarshan changed his fortunes..with Herapheri and such.. Anyways, his longevity is amazing. Suneil Shetty and the likes who came with him is ling done and dusted..even Saif is not around much anymore. And here AKshay is having a dream run..!

        • Nice nostalgia there vijjie. Ah those were the days where we could decide to watch a movie just on a whim or sudden desires…. Akki was never on any priority list of movies to watch but this one was publicized having a lot of sexy scenes between Akshay and still hot Rekha (watched Utsav inspite of that loser shekhar suman in the lead). Those were still the days where we made our minds to watch a movie going by the poster itself and this one had an erotic mud dance pose of rekha-akki plastered all over the city. With Youtube we can relive that mudslinging
( 2.00min mark on the link). Incidentally the title of this song is copied from a very very popular pop song of the 80s ‘you take myself, you take my self control by Laura Branigan.

This movie was a lifeline to Akshay. Akshay had given many bad films after his super hit Sabse Bada Khiladi.
This movie came with lots of Akshay’s affair stories with Rekha and she becoming the reason for his break up with Raveena.

These controversy helped Akshay to be in news despite giving several flops.

When I was watching Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi i was intrigued by the level of action then. he movie has few genuine emotional moments and awesome action sequences. Remember the seeties and taalis in the housefull single screen.

Maan shera waaliye song was also a rage then. This movie had Inder Kumar, who passed away shockingly in his 40s due to cardiac arrest.

Rekha was the lead actress of the movie and her scenes with Akshay still remain my favourite. Raveena looked glamorous and i always thought she looked best with Akshay and vice versa. Alas, Few pairs are not supposed to get married.

      2011-2016: Salman

      • True. Madhuri became overnight star with her Ek Do Teen in Tezaab which released in 1988. She became No 1 when Beta released. She ruled the 90s with strings of Blockbusters and power packed performances and dance songs. Till date no heroine has reached her scale of success.
Her remuneration in Anzaam and Prem Granth was more than SRK. She used to charge higher than male heroes in several of her films like Yaraana, Mrityudand, Pukaar, Rajkumaar etc.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Day 6 Box Office Collection Update: The early trends suggest that TEPK has a fair start on Tuesday. The drop is okay in the morning shows which has ensured a decent amount today. There will be growth in the evening which can push the film to a higher number. Check out Toilet Ek Prem Katha collection update.

    Morning Shows Report:

Akshay Kumar starrer has a decent in the morning shows. The drop is huge from yesterday but that was expected as yesterday was a National holiday. Though it is solid if we compare it to the opening day. The overall occupancy was in the range of more than 15%. North India continues to sustain even on Tuesday while there were considerable drops in Rajasthan and Mumbai. The film has found huge appreciation in North India and it is likely that film will remain in theatres for some weeks in the region.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Day 6 Box Office Collection Update

The ticket rates are down to normal levels which will affect Toilet Ek Prem Katha collection. Still, there will be good growth in the later half of the day, especially at the plexes. As of now, we can expect 7-8 crores on Tuesday.

The audience feedback was excellent, in fact it is one of the best-received films of the year. But it is the first normal day since its release so it will be interesting to see its impact. As word of mouth will come into play today and this will decide that how big hit it can be. 150 crore looks on cards which will make it the highest grosser for Akshay Kumar and also highest grosser of the year.

    • This is indeed a problem. Any comparision with Salman is going to be detrimental. I had not like Judwa the movie but loved its peppy songs and Salman’s performance in those songs and few hilarious scenes. Karishma Kapoor as usual was the irritating element. I was actually surprised when got to know that Judwaa turned out to be such a huge hit.
Judwa 2 will rely on songs.

How it is considered as ashuddh. The story of that girl who was bitten by a snake during that isolation period. Nosy neighbours making some progressive families lives miserable by asking why the girl did not sit outside for the last month. If Padman addresses these things, it will be really a social service and the message should awaken atleast some.

  129. TEPK Wednesday is around 7 cr. First week will be around 95 cr. If it trends like normal Akshay movies, then we are looking at roughly 20 cr second weekend, which will take TEPK to around 135-140 cr lifetime total. It will still be his highest grosser, but in the same range as Rowdy Rathore. And not much more than Raees.

Akshay has definitely turned out to be the savior for Bollywood when every other movie is flopping left and right. But he is still struggling for wider reach imo. Not talking specifically of TEPK – its a low budget movie on open defecation and such a film can only do so much. But overall he needs a big opener and a big grosser. Maybe 2.0 may do the trick for him.

SRK have been a bigger star in his peak, but he is really in trouble right now. In current standing Akshay is in a better position than SRK. Hopefully he can consolidate his position further with his 3-4 movies coming in 2018.

    • Akshay’s struggle for wider reach will continue next year too. 2.0 is a multi-starrer, even if it does v well (200 cr maybe) there will be talk about Rajni’s credit in it. And Akshay does not have any other such films to follow-up with another big gross. Padman, Gold and Mogul will all be in the usual 100-150 cr bracket if they click.

  130. “Shah Rukh Khan’s time is over”
I have been hearing such comments ever since Jab Harry Met Sejal has bombed at the box office and it has amused me. I am amazed that there are people, even from the industry and trade, who think that the golden time of Shah Rukh Khan is over and that he won’t be able to get back in the top league.

What everyone has forgotten is that despite the debacle of Jab Harry Met Sejal and underperformance of Raees and Dilwale, he’s still one of the bankable stars that we have today. He has earned lot of credibility and fan following since 25 long years and these aspects don’t wither away with a couple of bad films. Also, a nice way to gauge the popularity of an actor is how well his films open. In this regard, Shah Rukh Khan is one of the top stars. Almost all his films in recent times have opened very well. Jab Harry Met Sejal looked urban and niche from the promos and it’s actually a feat that it opened at Rs. 15.25 crores. Raees clashed with Kaabil, opened on a non-Holiday and yet collected Rs. 20.42 crores. Dear Zindagi was never meant to be a ‘Shah Rukh Khan film’ since he had a supporting role and also considering its genre, it managed a Rs 8.75 crores opening. Even Fan was not exactly mainstream and managed to collect Rs. 19.20 crores on its release day. Dilwale again had a clash and there was fear looming due to his intolerance remarks. Still, opening at Rs. 21 crores was impressive. Happy New Year and Chennai Express meanwhile were masala films and released on holidays; no wonder that both had rocking openings, at 44.97 crores and Rs. 33.12 crores respectively. Only a superstar can manage to get such great figures consistently.

Where Shah Rukh Khan is faltering right now is with his choice of scripts. His films open well but since the content is not appealing to viewers, the collections come down quickly, mostly after the weekend. Imagine if Dilwale and Raees were laced with a great script and direction, then both these films would have crossed Rs. 200 crore despite the clash. Even Jab Harry Met Sejal, with the support of urban audiences, would have grossed Rs. 150 crore.

The idea for SRK is to back content that is entertaining and which can work at an all-India level. The opening will be definitely huge, as proved above, and then the content can do the talking. And the perception that now, Shah Rukh Khan won’t get a good opening as he has lost audience’s trust is also wrong. 10 years ago, Salman Khan had an even worse performance at the box office. Shah Rukh Khan’s films at least open well. Many of Salman Khan’s films like Baabul, Marigold, Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar, Yuvvraaj etc, had extremely poor openings. Marigold especially released just a week after Chak De India and arrived without any noise. It shockingly failed to even reach 1-crore-mark! But then he did Wanted which was just a correct film for him. It was massy, entertaining and had comedy, emotion, romance, music, action etc, in adequate doses. Expectedly, audiences lapped it up and came out in hordes. He then followed with consecutive blockbusters starting with Dabangg. Today, he’s one of the greatest superstars of Indian Cinema ever. A decade ago, nobody had thought that Salman Khan would be giving blockbusters after blockbusters in the years to come.

Something similar can happen with Shah Rukh Khan. He has a ready fan base and trust factor, built over the years. He just needs the right kind of script, the right kind of director and the right kind of people-friendly genre. If all these things are taken over, there’s no reason why Shah Rukh Khan can’t re-emerge as the superstar to reckon with!

    • Media has always been kind to SRK and continues to do so. Audience rejection is another thing, and it ultimately decides the fate of a star. General public seems to have lost faith in SRK and his films. And it has not happened in a day, it is a continuous process. I have not seen JHMS, but I doubt if the movie is that bad as to fold up at 60 cr lifetime total. And it also opened at only 15 cr, which shows diminishing returns on the opening front too.

Anyways, that dwarf film will eventually make things clear. It is again a romcom with a gimmick of a physically stunted hero. And by the time it releases, Aamir will have SS and TOH under his belt, Salman will have TZH, Akshay will have 3-4 more films, Ranbir will have Dutt, and heck even Hritik may be ready with another Krish film. Reinvention and comeback for SRK is always possible on paper, but it will not be easy.

He needs a kick up the backside and criticism. This holding your hand and patching up the cracks works only for some time. Eventually the house comes down and you have to move on. I don’t see any point in treating SRK like a baby, just call a spade a spade. He’s in trouble & must make radical and better decisions.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha had another strong day on Wednesday as it collected 6.50 crore nett taking its six day total to 88 crore nett. The film did drop from its inflated levels on Monday and Tuesday but with the holiday factors out of play the film is still showing only a 45% drop from its first day and it is day five. This is also after huge business on Monday and Tuesday. It could be that even on day seven the film has not gone down 50% from day one.

There is a minor holiday on Thursday which could boost collections in some parts of the country and the first week is looking at business of 94-95 crore nett and where it lands on Friday will give an idea of its lifetime business. The six day collections of Toilet Ek Prem Katha are as follows.

If TEPK sees Airlift kind of trending, it is heading for a 20 crore nett second weekend if it can gross around 5.5 crore nett on its second Friday. Basically it has to show less than 10% drop from Thrusday to Friday. Then week 2 would be around 30-32 Cr nett.

Overall this seems to be heading to 140-145 Cr Nett lifetime.

FYI, footfalls are a realistic measure of popularity in view of the changing economic scenario with fluctuating ticket prices. As we no more discuss silver jubilees & golden jubilees due to front load screening, time is also ripe to introduce footfalls as a currency for fame.

Restaurant, se yaad aaya don’t forget to enjoy the delicacies offered at the Bhaijaanz at Carter Road, Bandra if you happen to pass by Mumbai and get the footfalls there too.

Salman is in a zone which is close to what this dialogue means – “Gabbar ke taap se tumhe ek hi aadmi bachaa sakta hai, ek hi aadmi, khud Gabbar” TL undoing is a wrong product at the wrong time and an aberration….

If the goal is predetermined, the data that follows is only further evidence of misinformation. I’m not questioning the raw use of data, but merely surprised that people lack intelligence to use data correctly or question it before using it blindingly.

To break even Tubelight needed 250 CR + and likewise JHMS needed 150 CR odd. Complete misfires. Tubelight hardly a huge surprise as it required some acting! Of course TZH was automatically a back up plan. Livewire already predicted 15 days straight of 25 CR +. A guy educating us on why FF’S are important today predicting ridiculous stuff that even this era’s greatest pan India film didn’t do!

The rate of inflation, in ticket prices and screens is too much to calculate any legitimate ATP. It’s a silly concept introduced to reduce a certain star’s records.
