  1. Hope Poster boys does well but literally has no chance. Bobby Deol need to be back in movies at least in multi-starrers. I know he’s not talented to be a solo hero but he’s not in a multi starrer and has unique personality and voice. After this he has YPD 3. He was great in its first part and still didn’t get even a single movie offer for years inspite movie being a hit.

Have no hopes for Karan deol though especially Sunny Deol directing a romantic movie though loved his Dillagi and also liked Ghayal returns. Karan deol has no looks or personality as far I’ve seen his pictures. In comparision, Bobby deol was great during Barsaat launch with his Italian looks and style.

It was clearly not troubling him as much as he has been talking about about it. At 36, fear of injury is bad as the injury itself. Will the back hold up? It did, but eventually he lost due to playing poor tennis.

    • 22 years … Rangeela was an important film for Aamir. It started the the mid-phase in his career where he broke out of his chocolate-boy image and also adopted an outrageous (at that time) strategy of doing one film at a time.

It was a prelude to what happened since Lagaan, with that ‘extra effort’ starting to go into each film. Luckily he survived that experimental phase of working style with BO hits (Raneela, RH, Ishq, Ghulam, Sarfarosh) and decent quality of films (except the loud OTT films he did with Indra Kumar and Dharmesh Darshan).

That phase did not end in a high with both Mann and Mela underperforming – but it was a blessing in disguise IMO. It stopped him from repeating directors who gave previous blockbusters with him (no matter how bad the film was). He is surprisingly repeating that after a long time with Victor (TOH after D3).

      • my only complain with Aamir of today is that he has lost that chutzpah of Rangeela…..he is so well-prepared now that (nothing wrong with it as he is still one of the masters of the celluloid and knows audiences’ pulse too well) but that raw spontainity of Rangeela and Ghulam or even DHKMN has gone 😦

So Aamir played a competitor to Jackie for Mili’s love in Rangeela as well as his son in D3?

  5. Over a month ago, we had reported that Bhumi Pednekar has been signed on for a film with Sushant Singh Rajput. While the actress then was busy with the promotions of two of her back-to-back releases, now she is all set to move further for her next venture which is the Abhishek Chaubey directorial on dacoits. Reports have it that she will start shooting for the film early next year.

While this will be the first film which will have Bhumi Pednekar cast opposite Sushant Singh Rajput, the two are said to play the role of dacoits. The actors will also have to undergo extensive prep for the same. Although Bhumi will have time to focus on the same, Sushant is surrounded with films like Chanda Mama Door Ke and Kedarnath due to which the actor may have a packed schedule until next year. Hence, reportedly, the film is slated to go on floor in January.

In fact, almost a month ago, co-writer Sudip Sharma had visited Chambal for recee and has even scouted locations for the film. As of now, the team is working on other details. Set in the 70s, the period film will trace the stories of dacoit culture which the place is famous for and is produced by Ronnie Screwvala.

BO update Daddy and Poster Boys open on an average note of 20%

After last week’s releases BAADSHAHO and SHUB MANGAL SAAVDHAN, both of which worked well in their own right, this week we see the release of two starkly different films with the Arjun Rampal starrer DADDY and the comic caper POSTER BOYS hitting screens. But will the two new releases manage to sustain business at the box office, or will the previous releases continue to dominate is the question.

Reports state that both POSTER BOYS and DADDY have opened on an average note with occupancy rate during morning shows being pegged at approximately 20%. While DADDY that tells the story of the local don Arun Gawli seems to be working in multiplexes, POSTER BOYS that has received rather positive reviews has been doing well in single screens. However, both films will face competition from last week’s BAADSHAHO that is going strong.

On the whole, with positive reviews POSTER BOYS is expected to fare better with early predictions expecting a Rs. 2-3 cr opening day collections, while DADDY that will have to rely on good word of mouth could well be looking at an opening around the Rs. 2 cr mark.

Daddy and Poster Boys both had dull openings of 8-10% and both will find it tough going. Daddy is leading in Mumbai and Pune while Poster Boys is ahead in other parts of the country. In South India bot films could hardly find an audience. It will be very low numbers unless things improve over the day. At the moment it is tough to say which film will be tops at the box office today as Daddy, Poster Boys and the holdovers Baadshaho and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan all look in a similar range as far as the morning shows are concerned. Below are the admit figures of first shows for Daddy and Poster Boys with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city.

  9. Farah Khan says she is overworked and underpaid for ‘Lip Sing Battle’
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network

After a considerable gap, Farah Khan is back to TV with the musical show ‘Lip Sing Battle’. It is the Indian adaptation of the popular ‘Lip Sync Battle’. Prominent celebrities like Farhan Akhtar, Parineeti Chopra, Preity Zinta, Arjun Kapoor, Karan Johar etc have performed on the stage and as per reports, they have rocked the show. ‘Lip Sing Battle’ also made news when Shah Rukh Khan paid a special visit on the sets to wish luck to Farah, who is her old friend.

Farah Khan has opened up that she is not just the presenter on the show – she is also completely involved in its nitty-gritties, like getting the actors, planning the creatives and even deciding the songs. However, she adds that she wasn’t paid more for the extra work done by her. She joked that she has over worked and has been under paid for ‘Lip Sing Battle’.

‘Lip Sing Battle’ features celebrities lip syncing to a popular song. Farah Khan has promised that the competitive streak of the show has ensured that each episode has turned into a laugh-a-minute riot. She also assured that audiences will get a chance to see the unexplored, mad and fun side of their favourite stars. For instance, she said that Farhan Akhtar, who is soft-spoken and has a reserved image in public, has gone crazy on the show. Even Shaan surprised her with his fun side.

While talking to the media for ‘Lip Sing Battle’, Farah Khan was also simultaneously talking to Ayushmann Khurrana who will be seen in ‘Lip Sing Battle’. Farah admitted that Ayushmann will be teamed up with Raveena Tandon and that the actor-singer is excited. She also assured that her good friend, badmintion player Sania Mirza will be a part of ‘Lip Sing Battle’. The shoot will go on till October and Farah Khan has geared up for crazier times ahead.

‘Lip Sing Battle’ will be co-hosted by Ali Asgar. He’ll be playing Karah, the wannabe Farah. Farah Khan said that he dresses up like her and it’s hilarious to see him as she feels that even she looks terrible! She then praised Ali Asgar’s comic timing and said that she had a gala time shooting with him.

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who has worked with A.R. Rahman for films like Rockstar, Highway and Tamasha, says the Oscar winning composer’s life is worth a biopic but feels it can wait.

Asked whether a biopic should be made on Rahman, he said, “Definitely… I think a biopic should be made on A.R. Rahman sir, but I don’t think this is the right time to make film on his life.

“One can start with the research but it should be made later on. He is too young and he has not even reached the middle point of his career.”

The movie’s premiere was attended by celebrities like Ashutosh Gowariker, Armaan Malik, Boney Kapoor, Akriti Kakar, Javed Jaffery, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Raghav Sachar, Mukesh Chhabra, Roop Kumar Rathod, Lalit Pandit, Pankaj Udhas and Jubin Nautiyal.

After a mixed response to his last film Jab Harry Met Sejal, what is Imtiaz planning for his future project?

“I am writing new scripts. I am trying to figure out which one is good and as usual, I am trying to find best scripts to which I can do justice.”

According to recent reports, Ranbir Kapoor might just team up with director Imtiaz Ali for their third venture together after Rockstar (2011) and Tamasha (2015). A source close to the actor has revealed, “Ranbir will be a part of Imtiaz’s next. That’s not all, the actor will go through a massive transformation for this film. Imtiaz plans to show different stages of the character’s life in the film.”

What’s interesting to note is that both the filmmaker and the actor are reeling under box-office flops. Even actors such as Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma couldn’t save Imtiaz’s latest release, Jab Harry Met Sejal, and it failed to create magic at the box-office. Ranbir’s film, Jagga Jasoos, on the other hand, performed underwhelmingly, which has put both of them in a tight spot.

Ofcourse nos in S.Korea and Japan wldn’t be as sensational as in Pan China.I just hope they rake up around 25-30M$ combined. That wld really be very very huge i guess.Japan is a big market(3rd biggest after NA and China) but Aamir’s following is not there like in Pan China.Wld be very intresting to see what it does there. There wld be a release there by Nov or Dec17.

    • 25-30 M$ from Japan and S Korea would be fantastic, but I doubt if it would go so high (unless it really strikes a chord in Japan). Sometime back we had talked about 8-9 M$ possibility from HK alone, lets see where it ends there.

      Like

      • It wld be in 5-7M$ range in HK unless it trends like 3I there which can’t be ruled out(3I ran for 35 weeks there and Taiwan trending gives us the hope as well).Even 5-7M$ means around 11-15Lacs footfalls there and that too with a population of mere 70 Lacs which is unprecedented to say the least.Black did around 5.8M$ in Korea so there is no reason why Dangal can’t top that and gets to around 8-10M$ there.Japan should be a bit more. It’s just that Indian movies don’t release in Japan as such.3I is the highest there with 1.6M$.3I is the movie that got some connect in all ie.Pan China,Korea and Japan. It’s just remains to be seen if Dangal connects in a similar way coz connect of Pan China with Dangal is much more than 3I.I just hope Korea and Japan reciprocates.

  19. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Holds Well On Day Eight
    Saturday 09 September 2017 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan has emerged a good success at the box office as it collected 1.50 crore nett apprx at the box office on its second Friday. This is a solid total for its second Friday and takes the eight day business of the film to 25.25 crore nett apprx.

The drop is around 20-25% from Thursday which is good trending though to emerge a major HIT it probably had to hold at the same levels as Thursday or even better as that is what the content films which go over the 50 crore nett tend to do. The film has its best collections in the delhi NCR area. The collections of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan till date are as follows.

    Week One – 23,69,00,000

Second Weekend – 1,50,00,000 apprx (Friday)

    TOTAL – 25,19,00,000

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan was the best collecting film this week at multiplexes of the metros as it beat all the new releases including Hollywood horror film IT. It should cross the business of Bareilly Ki Barfi in two weeks and looks to be heading to be a SEMI HIT unless the the holds up better than expected. The film makes its eleven successful films in the year out of 147 releases not counting this weeks releases.

  20. Daddy And Poster Boys Opening Day Business
    Saturday 09 September 2017 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Daddy and Poster Boys could not find an audience as both opened to very low collections. Daddy looks set to collect in the 1-1.25 crore nett range and even here most of the collections have come from Mumbai circuit. In most circuits the film is a complete washout as even a circuit like Delhi / UP has hardly collected 15 lakhs nett and less said about the likes of Bihar and Rajasthan the better. The collections in Mumbai circuit will be 4-5 times of Delhi / UP. These underworld films have never really worked since the first star cast one Parinda in 1989. That film flopped badly and its pretty much been the same scenario since then barring a few low budget ones which succeeded on low costs rather than appreciation but these films still get churned out regularly in the Hindi film industry.

Poster Boys has collected better than Daddy but still the collections are very low as it collected in the 1.50-1.75 crore nett range. The film has a problem in terms of its look and a very television look rather than a feature film which will keep the multiplex audience away and even single screens. Sunny Deol was taking these type of numbers on opening day way back in 2001 when Indian and Gadar opened at 1.80 crore nett and 1.40 crore nett respectively but those films probably had more spent in actual production as well despite it being 16 years ago. The film still has an outside chance if it can grow 60-70% today but that is probably an unlikely scenario.

The Hollywood horror film IT also collected in the same range as Poster Boys which comparatively makes it better than the Hindi films.

The new guyz dont have any ‘fandom’ as such (Ranbir included). Once that happens, Bollywood film-makers will need to step up to deliver ‘big’ grosses. Till then, a TZH or a TOH will be there to save a dismal year at BO, like whats happening in 2017.

  23. IT opens with record breaking $51 million on Friday

Hollywood horror film IT has registered a monstrous opening of $51 million on Friday. The film has exceeded all expectations and has also shattered many box office records.

IT has recorded the highest opening ever for a horror film and R-rated film beating Deadpool. It is also the biggest start ever for the months of September and October. Earlier the film also grossed $13.5 million on Thursday previews which is also a record for an R-rated film.

The film was expected to open with $60 million in the opening weekend which still would have been a record. But now it is projected to gross massive $100 million in the opening weekend. These numbers are just out of this world as IT was not a superhero film nor it was released in Summer. The film had practically zero star value as the major cast consists of kids.

Meanwhile, IT has collected 1.75 crores in India on the opening day which is a decent start considering that it was an adult film and had limited screenings. The film has topped the opening weekend in India beating all new and holdover

  24. “In my life, I have always liked criticism, the one which is without spite, one that is genuine. I always take them positively and therefore, I have grown. In fact, I would like to thank all my critics on that note,” Rahman told IANS after a special screening of his film “One Heart – The A.R. Rahman Concert Film” here.

Talking about the idea of the film, he said: “You see, concert films are a very practised culture in the west. They are produced by music companies. As you can see, they have produced films like ‘This Is It’ and ‘Amy’. But here, in India, we do not have that form of entertainment. Perhaps, also because there’s no potential market.

“When we shot ‘One Heart’ in America, I thought why not make it as a form of concert film? In a decade, nobody has done that, and we also should present our story in a manner to cater to a wider audience. I have collaborated with different musicians internationally, so in this film, we have tried to capture some of that.”

The story of the film revolves around his concert tour across 14 cities in North America. Interestingly, it not only shares some of the backstage moments of the legend, but also how nature inspires him to unwind, motivate and creates music.

So, where is the common thread between the sound of nature and the noise of the crowd, since the soundscape of these two worlds is quite opposite?

“Yes, you are right… Looks like they are two different worlds, right? But you see, I have a process to incorporate them. You know how? Whenever I go to the sea or a mountain, I feel the energy and sound of vastness, I close my eyes to feel them. I record those sounds. Later while making music, I use those imageries… It gives you that calm in your soul, and then you incorporate the right musical elements.

“It drives me… whether it is for film music or independent song, because I usually do not differentiate. Many a times it has happened that Mani Ratnam came and liked some tune or song that I prepared for the album, then we used it for a film,” said Rahman.

However, even after so many years of live concerts, Rahman still gets stage fright before facing huge crowds that wait to see him perform live across the world.

Reflecting on that, he said: “I think that is one of the things that has not changed even today. From my first stage show, there was a moment of fear and anxiety. Before stepping in, I think about a lot of things like, if the headphones are working properly, there shouldn’t be any echo coming, the microphone should work in order, people should love my music, they should have a good time and positive vibes…thousand things.

“This happens more when I am going for a various artists’ concert, where the audience is coming with different taste of music, which is quite different from a solo concert.

    Saturday – 2,50,00,000 apprx

Kangana says, “So then, I was like who is going to help me now? If I go to the cops, my parents are going to take me back and I didn’t know which is worse because then there’s no way out.”

But Zarina, who had decided to keep silent till now, is very upset about a couple of things that Kangana has said. She breaks her silence since the controversy erupted to speak exclusively to Pinkvilla…

Speaking to us from Hyderabad, Zarina tells us, “I was just going through some stories on my mobile and I read Kangana has said ‘She (Zarina) used to treat her (Kangana) like a daughter…” This is completely untrue! When I knew she was dating my husband how can I say she’s like my daughter? That is ridiculous! Usually, I don’t react to such things but these two things have been really upsetting! I was very upset when I read it! She was dating my husband (Aditya) for four-and-a-half-years so how can I say that she’s like my daughter? Impossible! On national television, she’s going on saying that she’s (Kangana) is like my daughter (Sana)… What nonsense is Kangana talking about?”

Kangana also said she came to Zarina for help and she refused to give it. “Yeh toh sawaal hi nahi hota hai yaar! (There is no question of this happening) Agar meri husband ko date kar rahi hai, toh mere paas kaise aayegi? (If she is dating my husband how can she come to me? Bolnewali ko bhi akkal honi chahiye! (People who talk like this should have some brains). I met Kangana a few times because my husband wanted me to take her to meet Sanjay Leela Bhansali so I took her there. First of all, I never discuss my problems with my own sisters so who is she (Kangana) to me that I will go and discuss with her that if he’s not coming home I will be happy. What nonsense is she talking about? I should not say anything about her. These things are really bugging me! Mein itni bhi bewakoof nahi hoon (I am not that stupid) to treat her like my daughter! Mein kya aankhon mein patti daal ke duniya ghoomti hoon mein? Am I going around blindfolded, oblivious to the goings-on in the world? I know what happened but I don’t react to that and that’s a different thing. Sabka life deal karne ke liye alag tareeka hota hai, mera bhi alag hai (Everybody has a different way of dealing with life and my way is different from others). I read this on Google alert and I reacted. Otherwise, I am the last person to react.”

Zarina says she doesn’t want to get into a full-fledged discussion countering Kangana’s allegations. “Agar mein bhi aisa bolne lagoon toh uss ke aur hamare beech fadak kya rahega (If I start talking like her then what is the difference between her and me)? I will only say one thing – Bhagwan ne uss ko jo bhi past tha uss ka who, uss ka woh bhi jaanti hai, hum bhi jaante hai. Lekin uski kitna achchi position hai, I wish she had behaved in a more dignified manner… (Whatever past she had, we know and she knows about it, but today considering the successful position she is in, I wish she had behaved in a more dignified manner). Mera ek hi baat hai, ki uss ko position mili hai, uss position ka faayda achchi tarah se uthana chahiye, ye galat tareeka se uthane ka koi matlab nahin (The position that she is in today, she should not use that in a wrong way that but use it in a good and positive one). If she had behaved in a more dignified way, I would have liked it. I don’t want to counter any allegations. What else can I say about it? If she found Aditya to be such a bad person why was she with him? They were together for four-and-a-half years. When I first started hearing what she was saying I felt bad for her actually. This is not the time that she should talk. Abhi kya bol sakte hai… Woh apne marzi ki khud maalik hai… Aaj tak meine kabhi kisi ka bura chaha…”

Zarina has never been much to talk about anything ever since she became an actress. She agrees, “I have been like this right from the beginning. I have never thought or spoken negatively about anybody. Ups and downs come in everybody’s lives but one has to take it in a positive way. Jitna bura nahi hai toh aapko utna bura lagega. It’s not in my nature to say bad things about anybody and that’s why Aditya’s friends tell me – Bhabhi aap jaise log banane ke baad, aise log banana Allah miyan ne chod diya… (Laughs). (After making good people like you, God has stopped making such people).”

One feels that instead of raking up the past, Kangana should focus on promoting on her film Simran, which has good content. Zarina laughs, “I think she is promoting her film only. Aisa nahin karna chahiye (she should not say such things). What is the point of digging up 14-15-year-old stuff, uss waqt ki baat hai… Jab woh aaye thi, struggler thi, woh sabka pata hai and I don’t want to talk about it. Woh baat ka abhi baat karne ka matlab hi nahi hai… We don’t want to say anything right now because whatever we say will affect her film as it’s going to release soon so let things be for now. When the right time comes we will talk.”

‘It’ Devours Competition with Record-Breaking $117 Million Opening

    by Brad Brevet

    September 10, 2017

With a monster, $117 million opening weekend Warner Bros. and New Line’s It has delivered a record-breaking opening, breathing a little life back into the slumping domestic box office. The film has claimed the largest September opening, largest Fall opening, the largest opening for an R-rated horror film, not to mention the largest opening weekend for a horror film of any MPAA rating, and tops Open Road’s new release Home Again in second place by nearly $110 million. Overall, the film accounted for more than 75% of the combined gross for the weekend’s top twelve, and we’ve only just begun.

With an estimated $117 million, WB and New Line’s It, an adaptation of the acclaimed Stephen King novel, claimed the weekend’s #1 spot with ease, besting Open Road’s new release of Home Again in second place by nearly $110 million, the fifth largest gap between first and second place all-time. The film also dusted the previous opening weekend record for an R-rated horror film, more than doubling Paranormal Activity 3’s previous record of $52.5 million. In fact, It is already the fifth highest grossing R-rated horror film all-time after just three days in release.

The horror film’s debut was the widest opening ever for an R-rated film and as such delivered the second largest opening for an R-rated movie behind Deadpool’s $132.4 million opening last February. Additionally, the previous opening weekend record for September was held by Hotel Transylvania 2 with $48.5 million and the previous Fall opening weekend record was Gravity’s $55.7 million, neither of which stood a chance against It and combined don’t even come within $10 million.

It should be mentioned that rival estimates put It’s opening over $120 million and some closer to $125 million. One obvious reason for the disparity has to do with Hurricane Irma hitting Florida this weekend where ~175 theaters are closed. The state typically represents 5.5-6.5% of the domestic gross each weekend.

It received a “B+” CinemaScore, which, for comparison, is below the “A-” the first two Conjuring films received and ahead of both Annabelle features. The audience was split nearly down the middle, playing 51% female vs. 49% male with 10% of the audience under the age of 18, of which scored the film an “A-“. Overall 65% of the audience was over the age of 25.

Internationally, It brought in an estimated $62 million from 46 markets for a $179 million global debut. The overseas numbers include the largest opening weekend for a horror film in the U.K. ($12.3m), Russia ($6.7m), Australia ($5.9m), Brazil ($5.6m), Netherlands ($1.4m) and Poland ($1.15m). Upcoming releases include openings in The next key markets to open include Sweden and Mexico next week followed by France (Sep 20), Argentina (Sep 21), Germany (Sep 28) and Italy (Oct 19).

In second place is Open Road’s Home Again, which brought in an estimated $9 million from 2,940 locations. The debut is just a shade ahead of Mojo’s pre-weekend comparison to Bridget Jones’s Baby, which opened with $8.6 million last September. Home Again scored a “B” CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard finished in third with an estimated $4.85 million, down 54% from last weekend. The film’s domestic cume now stands just shy of $65 million.

Warner Bros. and New Line also claimed fourth place on this weekend’s chart with Annabelle: Creation now in its fifth week of release. Dropping 47% this weekend the film delivered an estimated $4 million as its domestic cume climbs to $96.2 million, soon to become the only August 2017 release to cross $100 million domestically.

Rounding out the top five is the Weinstein Co.’s Wind River. The film dropped 49% compared to last weekend, finishing with an estimated $3.2 million for a domestic cume topping $25 million.

Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Homecoming remains in the top ten in its tenth weekend in release with a domestic cume that now totals $327.7 million. The film’s international cume got a big bump this weekend as it opened in China with an estimated $70.8 million, pushing its international total to $495.3 million. The film’s worldwide total now stands at $823 million, making it the second largest Spider-Man release all-time behind Spider-Man 3 which finished with $890.9 million globally back in 2007.

Speaking of international totals, Universal and Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 entered the weekend as the third 2017 release to top $1 billion worldwide. The film added another $6.2 million to that international total as its current worldwide cume reaches $1.006 billion, the third largest worldwide release of 2017.

WB’s Wonder Woman brought in an estimated $662k this weekend and it has now crossed $410 million domestically, enough to become the fifth largest superhero release of all-time, pushing Iron Man 3 to sixth with $409 million.

In limited release IFC’s Rebel in the Rye opened with $44,280 from four theaters ($11,070 PTA); China Lion’s Twenty Two brought in an estimated $20k from 11 locations ($1,818 PTA); and The Orchard’s Trophy opened with $3,474 in one theater.

Next weekend will be interesting as Darren Aronofsky’s thriller mother! hits ~2,500 theaters as both it and It hope to reside alongside one another in harmony. Lionsgate will release American Assassin in over 3,000 locations and Open Road will debut All I See is You.

  30. Finished watching the KBC episode with SUPER 30 Anand Kumar. Having heard his story and his background, HR must have been on drugs to think he could play Anand Kumar. God knows what he and his father are thinking. There is NO way in hell he fits the role. Anand Kumar came across as one of the simplest souls ever and HR will have the most difficult time of his life shedding not only those abs, but his massive vanity and ego..

  31. Nadal wins US Open in straight sets. Did not expect Anderson to put up much of a fight anyways. Sweet 16th major for Nadal and he consolidates his #1 ranking for the rest of the season.

I think he has enough time on his hands to go past Federer’s 19 slams (even Djokovic has a chance if he comes back strongly). Would not be surprised if he picks up another couple of French titles in the next 2 years either.

    • This is the only reason Federer will play. Nadal can really clean up the records in this form as everyone else is hit with form or injuries. French open is a guaranteed slam pretty much. I’m no Nadal fan but if he goes past Federer & throw in his record Vs Federer it will change the perception on Federer.

      • Not a Nadal fan either, but I think he will get to 19-20 slams before he retires. I would be v happy if Federer manages to win his 20th slam before he goes, but I really doubt it. The general consensus seems to be that Fed had a great comeback year, but will now slow down till he eventually retires (and I dont disagree).

I think Fed will still be remembered at GOAT, mainly because of the grace and elegance in his playing style. Cant say that for Nadal though.

        • One of the things that is often missed in these discussions is that Wimbledon is slower today than it was in the 90s but so is the US Open. Serena said it was much faster when she first started out, McEnroe made the same point just the other day. And there has been a debate even otherwise over this. With Wimbledon they did it because they felt that the game had become so fast there were very few rallies anymore. It’s not just about speed but bounce as well. Wimbledon has the lowest bounce but it’s now a bit higher than it was in the 90s for the very same reason. The point here is that Nadal can win on hard court and even grass much more than would have been possible for a clay court specialist in the 90s or earlier. Obviously he’s a great player, certainly the greatest clay court player ever. However these changes also help him. Put differently if this is the 90s I doubt he’s winning even one Wimbledon. And he’d have it much tougher at the US and Australian. There is also the suggestion by some that to keep up the Federer-Nadal rivalry beyond a point there was corporate pressure to ‘enable’ this. Again not to deny Nadal’s talents or his will and so on but federer is a player who’d be great in every era but it’s not clear to me that barring a fluke Nadal could win on anything other than clay (assuming strong opposition). For decades this was certainly the case. Borg won just Wimbledon and the French, which was freaky but otherwise you either had people who won on clay or who won on the other two. Federer again is special in that barring Nadal he would have won a lot more on clay. But the opposite cannot be said for Nadal with a Wimbledon that is much faster. Much as my instinct always has been than on the faster Wimbledon Sampras is greater than Federer. McEnroe recently than on grass Sampras would have beaten Federer 6 or 7 out of 10 times. Of course these things are all debatable but the larger point I’m trying to make is that Nadal-Federer would have been like Agassi-Sampras in the 90s. Nadal is greater than Agassi for sure given his clay dominance but he’s won enough on the other courts to make it seem like a genuine rivalry. Agassi on the other hand rarely beat Sampras in a big one. In the 90s I think Nadal would have had his incredible French Open wins but might not have one more than a couple elsewhere. Federer (again assuming the same kind of opposition that he’s had in his career) would probably still have ended up with the same number of titles.

Now Nadal could catch Federer if Federer doesn’t win again. It’s very imaginable. On the other hand if Federer just has one more good year his record might still be out of reach. But my larger point nonetheless is that it’s not just about the overall number, it’s also about the player’s gifts. Obviously a minimal number of wins is necessary to even have that debate. The media-corporate culture we all live with is not only about anointing the next great player as ‘greatest’ (LeBron is Jordan, greater than Jordan.. Kobe before him.. etc.. or everyone Dravid through Kohli and still counting.. is equal to or greater than Sachin), it’s also about creating rivalries within sports (often the fake kind… Messi v Ronaldo) and then using all kinds of arguments to back up this claim and of course there are always enough fans and/or nationalistic reasons to support such a structure. And of course this also includes experts on TV or in the commentary box who know better but who also play the game because they have a nice deal going with the same forces.

Again all of this is not a takedown of Nadal, it would be crazy to do this, but there’s a gulf between him and Federer. Nadal is a great player, maybe one of the greats but Federer is just greater.

        • Excellent note on the the surface changes. Murray, Djokovic, Nadal all benefitted. It’s like cricket. If you’re a spinning nation make spinning wickets – that’s the acid test. Wimbledon is meant for serve volleying – should be that.

Unfortunately records are records to an extent. I think one more good year for Federer seals it. I hope it happens.

        • On a related note Sampras said a while back that he generally doesn’t watch tennis anymore as he doesn’t enjoy it. Except when Federer plays. Otherwise he felt it was mostly baseline hitting. Incidentally if you read or watch some of his interviews he actually is very interesting on the history of the game and it’s evolution, certainly since he’s seen it. But he tends to stay away from the limelight. Doesn’t even attend the matches.

        • Nadal fortunately got the advantage of slowed down grass and hard courts, but Federer still won the French Open without such props. Having another good year for Fed is tough. Dont care much what Pat Cash says, he has admitted that he thought Nadal should retire before 2017 season started.

          Like

        • of course he’s much younger than Federer so he has time on his side. On the other hand he still didn’t close the gap with Federer this year. They won two each so the differential remains what it was before the year started. I think if Federer were to win two more this year he’d probably be safe. The other thing we shouldn’t forget is Federer beat Nadal easily twice earlier this year. This time he just wasn’t fit. If he recovers properly the Aus Open is perhaps a truer test of where things stand going forward. Nadal will be strong. Djokovic might be back (though it remains to be seen how good he is at this point). If Federer is healthy and even if he loses in the semis or the final to a very strong player he should be considered the favorite for Wimbledon. And that’s the other thing about this US Open. Federer even when he had those lean years was generally only losing to top notch players, not just anyone. After losing to del Potro he said he felt like he could have lost to the right player in any of the rounds. He clearly wasn’t fit enough. Even then he could have pulled off the quarter. Had a few chances to put it away. The clue here though is the second set where he was on song and really dispatched Del Potro with ease. I actually felt he’d win in 4 at that point. So yes he’s had his lean years, yes he’s older and naturally more injury prone. Still with a guy who’s had his career one can’t write him off, specially not after this year. I do agree that this might be his last significant year. It’s just a function of age.

There is no way a human Can cover so many miles in a court and return back the next day, fresh as a daisy, for this long. There are other suspects as well. I mentioned this before as well. Just google “curious case of Nadal”. I lost interest similar to Sampras. Just think about why youngsters are not able to break through.

    • This was one of the weakest GS in memory in terms of competition. Nadal didn’t had to face any top 20 player. Only match was against a tired Potro. Potro was the only saving grace and any kind of threat to Fed/Nadal. However given his injuries and health issues he was always going to run out of gas sometime. The tournament really missed Djokovic and Murray. Further derailed by injury of Wawrinka, Nishikori and Raonic. I hope they come back strongly for AO, fit and healthy.

From vandalism to release date, Padmavati has been in news for a long time. Several reports suggested that the director is trying his level best to wrap up his movie before November as it is scheduled for release that month.

Now, according to a report in DNA, the movie might release in February 2018. A source told the daily, Says a source, “SLB had an October 20 deadline, which is impossible to meet now. The workers’ strike took away a few important days. Meanwhile, two of the principal actors — Deepika and Shahid — also had free dates, so they took off on vacations. A lot of the shoot is still left. The major chunk may have been shot, but some big action sequences are still left. Ranveer’s portions as the young Alauddin Khilji, too, remain to be shot.”

Padmavati has now vacated the November 17 release date slot. Says a source, “The makers are planning to release it in February 2018. Apart from Anushka Sharma’s Pari (February 9, 2018), no other big film is slotted for February.”

    Excerpts
“I mean, we are talking about the most vulnerable section of our society, the children. Had they cross-checked this monster’s credentials before employing him?” wonders Farhan.

Some time ago, one of the female employees Pallavi Purkayastha from Farhan’s company had been violated and killed by the watchman of her building whose credentials were unverified.

“To save some money you employ dubious people to look after homes and schools. What could be more careless and irresponsible? We immediately need to pass stricter laws against careless employment of unverified people. Because whether they are potential criminals or not is not written on their faces. How do we know that the watchman employed to protect our homes or the bus conductor employed to drive children to school is trustworthy?” asks Farhan.

He also feels that empowered sections of society do not exercise enough clout to stop these crimes. “Don’t just point fingers at actors. It could be any empowered/privileged individual or organization. We all must join forces to make sure that no potential criminal feels he can get away a crime as heinous as the one committed by that bus conductor in Gurugram.”

As an actor Farhan feels he can’t play anti-socials . “Maybe some years ago when crime was not so brutal barbaric…unthinking. Now….I doubt I will ever play a serial killer, rapist or a child molester just because it would challenge me as an actor. What about the much greater challenge that we face as nation to protect our vulnerable sections? We who have a voice must think twice before using that voice.”

Apart, one 4 year old came under the wheels of a senseless school bus driver. Why cant someone from the school see that the child gets down safely before the bus starts. The grandmother came to pick up but has to see the child dying horribly in front of her eyes. The bus should stop for a few minutes more to ensure the safety of little kids who are so vulnerable.

  37. ARJUN REDDY: Mild spoilers..

I normally stay away from Telugu films. Their ‘hero-worshipping’ and regionalistic tones put me off. The last ones I truly enjoyed were SHANKARA BHARANAM, SAGARA SANGAMAM, SWATI MUTYAM, BAHUBALI part 1, and of course Ramu’s SHIVA and KSHNANA KSHANAM [one of the rare films where a director best-utilized the irritating, shrill-persona of the highly over-rated Sridevi.]

ARJUN REDDY turned out to be quite an interesting, if not a highly satisfying experience thanks to the recommendation of a few [well, almost all if one were to go by demographics in IT] colleagues at work. This DEVDAS redux still manages to interest the viewer in spite of numerous takes and retakes on Dilip Kumar’s and Saigal’s versions. Cinematically, this is closer to Kashyap’s take in DEV D but still manages to breathe in some great moments of singularity inspite of the similarities and obsession with drugs.

So this is the story of Arjun Reddy Deshmukh [they managed to append a Maratha sur-name too to the ubiquitous Reddy surname] who is a narcissistic and psychotic personality with anger-management issues to boot. Of course, he is subject to the normal ‘trappings’ of machismo; he doesn’t hesitate to keep abusing people with mother-sister cuss-words; he doesn’t hesitate to bash people up; and he sure as hell is cocky enough to tell the Dean of his medical college that in spite of being a Dean, a Dean is but an employee where as he, Arjun Reddy, just because he bashed a guy in the football field, is living a ‘full-blooded’ life! He has his own philosophy on life which he spouts as and when it feels convenient. He falls in love-at-first-sight with a Tulu [read native] girl who joins the medical college of which he is a senior in his last months. He takes ‘charge’ of her and she responds to him zombie-like in which she doesn’t even know or doesn’t even want to understand or acknowledge that she’s being taken control of [all good signs for the patient who is willing to let himself of herself be operated upon by this future doctor!] He takes charge of her education, of who should or should not be her friends, of what classes/subjects she should give importance to, etc., etc., They fall in love–if you want to call it that–and ‘seal’ their love by having sex 549 times–maybe they were in awe of Shane Warne though that was with different women[http://www.dnaindia.com/sport/report-shane-warne-has-slept-with-1000-women-1044382] — and slapping each other at the slightest pretext. [Of course, he leads in this game.]

Due to Shakespearean plot-points of caste, regionalism, and time-lines [6 minutes make hell of a difference here], the duo get separated and he descends into a hell-hole of alcohol and drugs. Of course, he gets a job and rises to being a top-notch doctor/surgeon with a ridiculous number of surgeries to his name but is unable to rise above the feelings the woman generates in him [quite understandable, been there, done that]. In the end, however, all’s well that ends well and this is no tragedy in the sense that none of the protagonists dies but only the central, an off-shoot of a ‘sutradhar’ that dies [his grand-mother whose favorite song happens to be ‘IT’S A WONDERFUL WORLD’ and not some Telugu song]  and brings about that closure with Arjun Reddy and his estranged parents and brother.

This is a film that spans a whopping 185 minutes. And it is to the director’s and actor’s credit that they manage to hold one’s interest for almost 90% of that running time. And this is mainly because of a truly great performance from the lead actor. In spite of him spouting some dubious and hypocritical philosophies, over-all, as a person who doesn’t have control on himself [after all, who’s the weakest man? One who thinks he can control all or one that doesn’t have any control on himself?] This is a raw, brutal performance and one that could, well, stand out to be the equivalent of Sippy’s Sholay. [http://www.hindustantimes.com/regional-movies/arjun-reddy-ram-gopal-varma-sees-amitabh-bachchan-al-pacino-in-vijay-deverakonda/story-8Q7cgLIE7M3faO4GQT4gwO.html] Could Ramesh make a film better than Sholay? The result is already out. If Vijay Deverakonda is able to better this performance, hats off to him, and I would love to be proven wrong. Make no mistake, he and the director spare no minutes in underscoring the fact that he is a pretty boy; you have scenes, and MANY scenes where he goes into Salman the shirtless-expression-less-wonder-man mode, but it is to the actor’s credit that he is able to divert folks who are not interested in such stuff into his raw intensity and his character-driven performance.

There’s an interesting dichotomy in the way this film gets consumed by the audience; at least the way it was consumed by me. How does one judge this character? Or is one even deserving to judge? For instance, as I said, I could relate to many such personal stuff to the stuff being played out on-screen. However, as an audience, it’s not easy. As an example, there’s a scene where Arjun commands a ‘fat-chick’ to be his lady Shalini’s friend. Why? Because he believes a fat [read ‘ugly’] girl can be the ONLY true friend of a ‘beautiful’ girl. In another scene, he literally tells his friend that a guy is not ‘worthy’ enough of being married to the friend’s sister since he ‘objectified’ women on his flight from London! Really? What was the ‘fat-girl’ scene about? Can the audience ask why is it that you didn’t fall in love with the ‘fat-girl’? And he tries to justify it by saying that one might have talked stupid when drunk but one didn’t ‘objectify’ women!  [I, for one, didn’t know that dictionary meanings of ‘objectifying’ could be inter-changed so easily.] As an audience, you have complete rights to take such scenes head-on and challenge them. Why is your EAMCET or KCET score or rank so important to you? One needs to make up one’s mind when one’s decided to go against established norms of society. Maybe, just maybe, sometimes Bush’s policy of ‘YOU’RE EITHER WITH THEM or WITH US’ applies! Or just makes plain sense! But viewed in light of an individual grasping with life and its complex meanings and philosophies, doesn’t this ‘incompleteness’ in understanding life with all its unexplainable dimensions make sense? Maybe, 10 years down the line, Arjun Reddy might realize that what he did with his girlfriend’s forced-down-the-throat friend was exactly the same thing that the guy who talked about air-hostesses’ beauty did! I say this since I myself have done and said things, say,  5 years back which, today, as an aging person, look quite stupid to me! Maybe these conundrums turn out to be strong points for some audience for this movie, and maybe weak-points for some. It’s quite subjective. And, dare I say it, even the question of a female being in abusive relationship.

One of the most interesting themes I found here is the interpretation of the character of ‘CHANDRAMUKHI’ – or rather, ‘Chandramukhis.’ Arjun Reddy tries to find his Chandramukhi in an actress who happens to come to him for some treatment, but actually finds it in ‘multiple’ versions of Chandramukhis through prostitutes with whom he just engages in talks as a tool for catharsis. They are the actual Meeras, and hence the true Chandramkhis,  devoted to Lord Krishna and not the actress.

The rich land of Mangalore is shot quite poorly in the movie and there’s NOTHING that quite screams ‘Mangalore’: It seems to have been used just to bring in some Kannada language abuses and the Tulu conflict.

This is truly one of the more interesting films to have come out of the Telugu film industry after Bahubali and Ramu’s interesting RAKTA CHARITRA double. This is highly recommended. Vijay Deverakonda’s performance itself, is worth the price of the ticket.

Given the shoe string budgets, not surprised at the visuals. Read the director’s interview here http://www.idlebrain.com/celeb/interview/sandeepreddyvanga.html

      • By cinematography, I didn’t mean high-definition or something like that. I just meant the landscape of Mangalore was captured very poorly; no land-marks were captured, not one historical place or any scenes on the beach; not a single visit to the Gokarna beach.

This could well have been any other place passed off as Mangalore. You don’t get the ‘Mangalore’ vibe, say, like Ratnam’s OKK [even though here too, I was not quite happy with the way Mani lensed Bombay.]

  38. Veteran film, television and theatre actor and Padma Shri Tom Alter is battling cancer. The renowned actor’s family shared the news on Monday, a week after he was admitted to Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital.

Alter, 67, has had a relapse of a squamous cell carcinoma. He is under treatment and expert supervision at Saifee Hospital. His family has asked for privacy as the treatment continues.

Alter, a gold medal diploma graduate in acting in 1974 from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, has acted in over 300 movies apart from numerous TV shows, perhaps most famously as the gangster Keshav Kalsi in the hit soap opera Junoon which ran for a record five years during the 1990s.

In addition to acting, Alter has also ventured into direction and was a sports journalist in the late 1980s to early 1990s. He was the first person to interview Sachin Tendulkar for TV when the cricketer was yet to debut for India. Alter has written three books, one non-fiction and two fiction, and in 2008 was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government in recognition for his services to the field of arts and cinema.

  39. The news that Aamir Khan is getting distribution going is quite a move. He produces, edits, sits with musicians, directs, acts – will he write?

He might feel he can get a better deal with the Chinese than his distributors!

But this makes his return on movies extraordinary potentially.

The rest will follow his lead eventually.

      • He anyways does what he likes only!

But having a distribution arm of his own, is going to help him to keep producing small films and making enough money out of them. Even for the films he acts in, 3 out of his last 5 films have been AKP productions (Dhobi Ghat, Talaash, Dangal). And 2 out his next 3 films are also his productions (SS, Salute). The more he is active on the production front, the better it is for him to have a distribution arm. I think it is a great step.

    • Well, he actually does writing too! At least used to for sure. One of his drafts came in handy for the climax of RDB. In the original version of the script the boys were shot dead while trying to escape after killing the PM. Aamir felt that kind of ending did not connect with the rest of the story and its message. So he suggested to take the climax of his own story (which was “stuck in the chest of drawers anyway”) and this how the radio station climax appeared.

    • The interesting part about this is the timing of it. He might believe that SS will strike big. Also, he will have to work on the screen count and quality due to the clash. Everything points to SS being a good product. Hope so.

      • He has been sounding pretty confident of the product ever since the test screenings conducted in the beginning of the year. They have also been constantly working to improve the quality of the film since then. He has even compared it with TZP in one of his interviews.

Wont be surprised if he is expecting a big one here and this move is timed to maximize the profits. Would be great if it turns out so, but more importantly hope that the film is good.

      • AKP into distribution may be a boon for Salute more than SS. Salute is going to be a high budget production for AKP, and read somewhere that the budget can be as high as 400 cr (am sure that report was exaggerated). But the topic will nonetheless need a considerable high budget, and AKP distributing themselves will curtail the risks. I believe its a long-term and well though-out plan for Aamir to venture into distribution at this point.

The outcome of SS and Salute may well decide the future direction of AKP – whether they will focus on small budget or bigger budget ventures. If both hits the mark, then sky is the limit for them.

    ByBollywood Hungama News Network

While he is all set for his twin role debut in Judwaa 2, Varun Dhawan will soon start prepping for his next, Yash Raj Films’ Sui Dhaaga. Earlier we had reported that for the first time ever Varun will be paired opposite Anushka Sharma for a forthcoming film titled Sui Dhaaga and now it is being said that the actor will be seen in the role of a labourer in the film.

From what we hear, Varun Dhawan will be seen in the role of a hired help in the film which is is directed by Dum Laga Ke Haisha fame Sharat Katariya. On the other hand, details of Anushka Sharma’s role in the film are yet to be revealed. The film aims to bring forth the condition of local cottage industries and revolves around dignity of labour among others. Earlier, Varun had mentioned that the film endorses the mantra of ‘Made of India’ and that it is relevant story even in today’s times. Producer Maneesh Sharma of YRF too had stated that the film has its roots in the heart of India and that it reflects the passion that runs through the veins of every Indian.

Sui Dhaaga is currently in its initial stage and is slated to go on floor in January next year. Although Varun Dhawan has previously played many roles, this will be the first time where the actor will be seen in such a character of a poor labourer.

This phase will probably be of 4-5 movies at max (including TOH and Salute), considering the pace at which he works. By that time he will cross 60 and would transition fully into playing supporting roles in his productions and directional ventures.

        • I want him to work in 1 small movie each time right after finishing a grand one like TOH which would not only take away the gargantuan pressure associated with such huge canvas movies but would also allow him to act in more movies with less risk- a win-win situation for both him and the audience as they would get to see him more frequently than his current style of working which usually takes 2 years in each of his projects barring one or two exceptions.

I’d like him to work with Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Neeraj Pandey, Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Mehra, Shoojit Sircar at least once as they are very interesting and capable directors who tend to convey a lot through their movies. I also would like him to work with Vidya Balan, Tabu and Deepika in terms of female co-stars with whom he has not worked yet. Rajkumar Hirani is more than enough as he has done 2 movies with him and It’d get repetitive and banal as Hirani is all too saccharine for my liking!!

Kiran is working on some script and surely it will be funded by AKP, but that may perhaps be more an art-house attempt like DG than in the commercial space.

I personally like PK far more than 3I and think that PK’s screenplay/script is far superior. There has been talk from many corners about a sketchy idea on a sequel to 3I, so it may materialize at some point. At BO it will be a goldmine, and can perhaps be the only film that can challenge Baahubali’s all India nett collections of 1000+ cr. It will surely be interesting if it happens.

I find Talaash his most interesting work since RDB and want him to act in movies such as 1947-Earth, Sarfarosh and Ghulam where he had human frailties and grey shades in his characters, not all super-humans such as Rancho and Bhuvan!! Rangeela’s Munna and DCH’s Aakash are another example of roles with a lot of shades not just goody goody.

The actress has turned screenwriter with Simran and turning producer with her next film Manikarnika- The Queen of Jhansi. With two exciting projects, Kangana Ranaut is all set for her directorial debut with the film Teju in which she will be playing the role of an 80-year-old woman.

Kangana Ranaut recently spilled the beans on her directorial debut project, Teju and when it will go on floors. In a candid interview, Kangana revealed that she will start working on Teju only after Manikarnika- The Queen of Jhansi. However, she did confirm that she is done shooting 30 percent shooting for Manikarnika.

Speaking of Teju and how when she would start shooting for it, Kangana said, “That film (Teju) is under the process. I will start it only after Manikarnika. It will be a nice journey and I am looking forward to it. It is a children’s film and I have a lot of ideas and excitement for it. But, it will be a difficult project to pull off and I am looking forward to it.”

Kangana further added, “I have many ideas and something which materialized is something like this, it is a family-children-drama because I want to cater to any audience. It will be a light-hearted film. I can’t call it comedy but most definitely a nice film. This is what I wanted to do.”

Kangana will be portraying the role of an eighty-year-old woman in Teju. For the role, the actress will have to prepare a lot and use prosthetics as well. She added, “Yes, we are going to use prosthetics, special effects, body double, all kind of techniques we will have to use.”

The actress also revealed that she will be working with kids and how she finds working with children difficult. She said, “Kids are very hard to handle! I like children, but to work with kids..oh…oh god…their sleeping time, and you know… But in my film there are kids.”

Teju will portray the story of a woman of the same name who is on the threshold of death but still is not ready to give up on life. She is a fun loving vibrant woman who is young at heart.

Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of Hansal Mehta’s Simran which is set to release on September 15, 2017.

The way the Hindi film industry is faring at the moment it is looking that films are more likely to appear in charts where they dont want to be which is lowest grossing rather than highest grossing. A Gentleman has become the sixth lowest grossing film ever for films which in terms of budget plus promotion have cost over 50 crore. It is there with some legendary company which basically include the biggest disasters of all time. Broken Horses heads the list and it will be a mighty achievement by some other film to take the biggest disaster of all time status from this film, not just in the medium term but in history to come. Broken Horses has made this status its own and our bet is it will never let go.

The director duo of A Gentleman have also set records by being in the list twice as A Gentleman and Happy Ending both come in the list. This also takes some doing as after giving a film like Happy Ending and having no successful film you don’t get a chance with a big film but these guys somehow managed it with A Gentleman but it fared worse than Happy Ending.

Even a Salman Khan starrer London Dreams comes up on the list but it was before his superstar days which started with Dabangg(2010) and the way things are going it won’t be there forever as there will be some 50 crore plus budget film which will do less than 25 crore nett over the next few years. Below are the top ten lowest grossing films which have a cost (budget inc pa) of 50 crore or more.

    1. Broken Horses (2015) – 45,75,000

    2. Mirzya (2016) – 7,92,25,000

    3. Zanjeer (2013)- 13,07,00,000

    4. Tezz (2012) – 15,91,00,000

    5. Fitoor (2016) – 16,85,75,000

    6. A Gentleman (2017) – 18,00,00,000 (expected)

    7. Rangoon (2017) – 20,87,00,000

    8. Happy Ending (2014) – 22,31,25,000

    9. Bombay Velvet (2015) – 22,80,25,000

    10. London Dreams – (2010) – 25,69,25,000

    • BOI are settling score with Vidhu Vinod Chopra as Broken Horses is an english film and doesn’t feature any hindi movie star then how can it be included in the list of all time disasters?? Also why insert a special note for London Dreams as a disaster is a disaster irrespective of the star’s standing but their overt love for Salman ensued in the insertion of these lame excuses!! They never, even by mistake, mention “Marigold” in their write-ups which couldn’t touch a Crore figure despite featuring a major star??

They work in films not for becoming superstars but because they love acting. And then we support Kangana about nepotism. I prefer small, meaningful films than big films with only the star trying to get the audience. These stars wont last forever and one day there will be more small films and only small films dominating.

Devgn’s so-called comeback with two quick BO hits has suffered a setback. Golmaal should still be a Hit though. But its unlikely to be anything beyond a Diwali weekend film, with total in 140-160 cr range. Theatrical trailer is coming next week around 21st Sep.

Actress Neena Gupta has been roped in for Anubhav Sinha’s “Mulk“, which also stars veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.

Neena will essay the role of Rishi Kapoor’s wife in the film and has begun her training for the role already. This is the first time she and Rishi will be teaming up, said a statement.

“I met Anubhav at a time when I was desperately seeking quality work. It was a really thoughtful gesture on his part to reach out to me at a time when I was undergoing this inner turmoil. Mulk is a phenomenal film and I’m quite excited to be a part of this experimental film,” Neena said.

In August, Neena took to social media to request work, posting a picture on Instagram with the caption: “I live in Mumbai and working, am a good actor looking for good parts to play.”

Sinha says he has always been a fan of Neena’s work.

“She fits the requirement of the role perfectly. After I saw her Instagram post, I didn’t hesitate at all to pick the phone and call her because there are some people in the industry who are timeless and she is one of them,” he said.

Sinha, who is both director and producer of “Mulk” added: “I couldn’t, for the longest time, find anyone who could match the description of the role, maybe she was destined to be a part of it. When I was dabbling in television in my earlier days I distinctly remember how she delivered some path-breaking performances in ‘Saans’ and ‘Buniyaad’, a time when Indian television was actually progressive and intelligently entertaining. She is a forerunner of her times and her involvement will enhance the multi dimensional script even further.”

A social thriller based on true life events, “Mulk” will go on floors in October. It will also feature Taapsee Pannu, Prateik Babbar and Rajat Kapur. The film will be shot in Varanasi and Lucknow and is scheduled to release early next year. The film is produced by Benaras Media Works.

Screenplay writer-producer Mushtaq Shiekh will be the associate producer of “Mulk“. The plot of the film revolves around the story of a joint family who hails from a small town in India, who are out to reclaim their honour after being embroiled in a controversy.

Rangeela (1995) heralded several reinventions. It revitalised playback singer Asha Bhosle’s career; it repackaged actress Urmila Matondkar as a sex symbol; and most significantly, it reintroduced AR Rahman, already hailed as a maverick for his path-breaking Tamil soundtracks, as a Hindi film composer.

It isn’t just among Rahman’s best; it’s also among his most radical, which is especially commendable considering that he was making his debut in an industry where the sonic template of the time was pretty much set in stone. Dubbed versions of his earlier scores had been huge hits, but Rahman, just a few years into his career, didn’t let the pressure prevent him from taking risks.

The album is filled with the sort of randomness that could only come from the mind of a genius. Take, for instance, the rap interlude toward the end of the title track, by Aditya Narayan, who was just eight years old at the time of the movie’s release. There’s no logical reason for it, yet somehow it works.

Indian hip-hop was name-checking brands way before it became de rigueur in American rap, except here instead of luxury cars and champagne, Narayan weighs Cadbury and Amul and Horlicks and Complan against each other, setting up those immortal lines, “Chocolate khane mein tension hai/Doodh peene mein tension hai/Tension, tension, tension.”

Rangeela Re opens the film, introducing us to the effervescence of Matondkar’s character, a dancer named Mili who shimmies in the street with a motley set of characters. In the sprightly voice of Bhosle, Mili clues us into her aspirations of making it big someday and through the combination of Rahman’s pulsating beats and lyricist Mehboob’s evocative verses, conveys the sense of exhilaration one can feel in a city as buzzing as Bombay where the movie is set.

Bhosle’s two tracks Rangeela Re and Tanha Tanha proved once again that when a song requires a certain sense of joie de verve, nobody does it better. Both tunes are electro-pop gold, and their sheen hasn’t dulled even after two decades. But she wasn’t the only one to benefit from Rahman’s knack of identifying and using a voice in a way it has never been employed before.

The first time I heard Shweta Shetty was when I saw her belt out Mariah Carey’s Vision Of Love in a play in the early 1990s. Then, after a couple of years, she launched a pop career with the bubblegum Johnny Joker, which didn’t quite do justice to her vocal chops. Rahman gave her one of the defining moments of her career with Mangta Hai Kya on which her voice soars alternatively with his against clattering beats that are occasionally interspersed – again inexplicably – with a Western classical choral arrangement.

The song situation is a dream sequence and perhaps the composer felt this was licence to let his imagination fly, just as the choreographer did when it came to filming the number.

Finding the right balance between innovation and eccentricity has always been Rahman’s forte, and in Rangeela all the experimentation is effortlessly incorporated into seemingly conventional songs about sexual attraction and romance. Strings swell but they never overwhelm, synth lines snake but find their way back.

Take away the urgent violins, tribal rhythms and whistling flute from Hariharan and Swarnalata’s sensuous slow burner Hai Rama and you’re left with the minimalist percussion that characterises much of current trap music.

Similarly, Rahman never lets his vocalists over-sing, whether it’s Udit Narayan expressing the inner conflict of Aamir Khan’s Munna on Kya Kare Kya Na Kare or Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy’s contemplation of the dualities of being in love on Pyar Yeh Jaane Kaisa Hai. He might have made more sophisticated soundtracks since Rangeela but few have simultaneously showcased his versatility and quirkiness as well.

The film, on the other hand, represented a moment in time, one of those rare instances when everything perfectly falls into place. A few months following the release, Ram Gopal Varma and Aamir Khan famously fell out with each other and never worked together again. The likelihood of such a story working today is dateable. In the song Yaaron Sun Lo Zara, Munna, who makes a living selling movie tickets in black, and upcoming actress Mili debate the benefits of material things such as a car, bungalow, bank balance, “TV-video” and “suiting-shirting” versus a carefree life free of the burden of accumulating wealth.

At the end – spoiler alert – while on the threshold of celebrity, she chooses him, her raffish childhood companion, over her flamboyant, suave and loaded co-star Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff). Like a lot of Rahman’s soundtrack, the plot is fantastical. It was the 1990s, we were full of optimism and relatively uncorrupted by consumerism. We bought it.

of course what’s amusing here is that Rahul didn’t mention the Kapoors at all! Now as for the larger point I quite agree and have said similar things for the longest time. People who belong to movie families try to justify this stuff in all sorts of ways. Ironically Abhishek is the only guy who’s willing to say ‘I’m here because of my parents’ and he offends people the most with this admission. Because from Saif Ali Khan and Rishi Kapoor to fans on blogs people want to pretend that it’s about ‘merit’. Indeed (following Rishi Kapoor) the audience has to like the star (which isn’t necessarily a function of ‘merit’) but a person who gets a job because of the family name violates that basic principle at the very outset. What happens later is irrelevant. At the same time the discussion cannot stop here. Because the audience is invested enough in the family name to show up for star progeny whereas regular debutantes never generate similar interest (reflected in the initials). So to repeat a point perversely enough the audience is democratically making its interest in genealogy obvious at the box office. Politicians’ sons are similarly ‘elected’ by the same people. The business model on the other hand is not the same at all. No one votes for Anil Ambani in an election or as a box office matter. What ‘multiplex India’ doesn’t like to hear is (let alone the likes of Johar) that even with all these pretensions of being progression in ‘New India’ the more things change the more they remain the same. And here’s another classic symptom along related lines. All the 50 plus stars act with actresses who are vastly younger. 20-25 years or more in certain cases. the very same thing was happening in the 80s or even earlier. The audience doesn’t seem to mind. Meanwhile the actresses still fade out at more or less the same age they always did!

    • He is becoming another krk but with less intelligence! I was surprised why Rahul did not take Kapoor’s name as their dynasty is the biggest one and ever increasing. In politics, dynasty happens because of trust factor and fear of backstabbing.

After Dilip Kumar was discharged successfully from the hospital last week, the thespian has retrieved possession of the disputed Pali Hill property, which was under the possession of real estate firm Prajita Developers Pvt Ltd. On Tuesday September 12, the keys to the property were handed over to Dilip Kumar’s wife Saira Banu. The former actress posed with the keys in front of the media. A picture of hers with the keys and a notice board that proudly proclaimed that the property belonged to Dilip Kumar, kept behind her, was tweeted from the official account of Dilip saab. The tweets read, “Message from Saira Banu – ‘Sahab and I took possession of the property which has been his residence for decades. Hon’ble Supreme Court restored the possession to us. Sahab is overjoyed. Sharing some photos. Thank you friends n fans innumerable who have prayed for us”.

Some reports suggested that Dilip Kumar was asked to deposit a registration amount of Rs 20 crore with the real estate firm, which was appointed to develop the property.

The dispute went to the court court almost a decade ago after Prajita Developers Pvt Ltd did not proceed with the agreed plan and left the plot empty, without any construction, as per the reports. Dilip Kumar’s property in Bandra’s Pali Hill is sprawled across 2412 square yards. In August this year, the Supreme Court asked Dilip Kumar to hand over the amount within four weeks and they also asked him to intimate the firm, which then was supposed to let the thespian acquire possession of the property within a week. The amount was duly deposited by the actor and the handover then took place as per the plan.

She embarked on a one-woman, five-week crime spree, robbing banks in Arizona, California, and Utah in the US. Serving a 66-month sentence in an American jail, the nursing student started on a life of crime to pay off her gambling debts. Unlike Sandeep, who is a Sikh who moved to the US as a child, Kangana plays Praful Patel aka Simran who is a Gujarati who moves to the US in search of a better life. Both are nurses by profession with an affinity for baccarat.

  56. Kangana Ranaut takes on Hrithik Roshan, Karan Johar in new video: Yes, I have vagina re

    INDIATODAY.IN | NEW DELHI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

Kangana Ranaut exposes the treatment meted out to heroines in Bollywood in her new video.
    Kangana
Kangana Ranaut is unstoppable. She did not hesitate to take on influential people in Bollywood, be it Hrithik Roshan or Karan Johar. Now, in her new video in collaboration with All India Bakchod (AIB), Kangana is calling out the sexism in the Hindi film industry.

It starts with Kangana going to her director to talk about an absurdity in her lines. However, he fails to recognise her, even when she introduces herself as the “female lead”. It is only when she says “love interest” that it rings a bell.

Kangana takes on bizarre lyrics of popular songs when she points out the absurdity of the line, “Mere seene pe mal de Iodex hothon se” (if you spot a similarity with the lyrics of Munni Badnaam or Fevicol Se, you are bang on!) She reasons that her character is a physicist, but the director dismisses her with “Audience ko titillate karogi tabhi toh hit hoga na!”

The hero enters, in the style of Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and is given God-like treatment – he is literally welcomed with a pooja ki thali. He makes the exact same suggestion that Kangana does, which is instantly accepted as a pearl of wisdom.

Kangana then decides to speak her mind in the song, a tweaked version of Chittiyan Kalaiyan Re titled Cause I Have Vagina Re. She takes jibes at Bollywood’s idea of a “modern ladki” – she smokes and swears, but is objectified, all the same. The emancipation is superficial – she may be a scientist in Poland, but she is reduced only to a love interest.

There is a jibe at Shah Rukh Khan. It is widely known that he puts the actress’s name before his in the credits of his films. When the hero in the song argues, “Put your name before the hero’s,” Kangana hits back, “Still your paycheck has more zeroes.”

The Queen actor also takes on the practice of 50-something Bollywood heroes romancing 20-somethings on screen. “Main toh hoon kitni young-young, Iss buddhe ke sang, Buzurg hai mera piya, It’s almost paedophilia,” she lip-syncs. She continues that while actresses lose their career when they get married, the actors they once romanced continue to be numero uno. As the actors get paired with girls young enough to be their daughters, the actresses end up endorsing household products like washing powder.

The song would be incomplete without a jibe at Hrithik and KJo, and Kangana does not disappoint. “Papa ne tujhko launch kiya ve, Main boli toh tune taunt kiya ve, tu karti victim play.” It’s no secret that most of Hrithik’s biggest hits have been directed by his father, from his debut film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai to Koi Mil Gaya to Krrish. There’s also a reference to Karan, who accused her of playing the “victim card” when she called him out for his nepotism.

The video saves the best for the last, giving the message that in Bollywood, actresses are easily dispensible at the whim of the hero.

Prasanna, who was present at the success party of the film here on Tuesday night, was asked if there are any plans to make a sequel of the film, which features Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles.

“Definitely, I have already told a story to Aanandji (producer Aanand L. Rai). It will be very interesting. We were waiting for audience’s response — whether they want to listen to the next story or not, and we have received feedback from the audience. They loved Ayushmann and Bhumi’s characters in the film, so definitely a sequel will happen,” Prasanna said.

He needs to understand that Aamir has proved his acumen as a thinking film-maker with his body of work, which IMO justifies his inputs or interference (which may be forceful) for a better film. Kangana’s acumen on film-making is just a set of self-absorbed statements and declarations till now.

    • “Khan chooses filmmakers who are willing to submit to his vision”

This is Aamir’s biggest strength and the key reason behind his success. The author tries to put this in a negative light, but it takes enormous faith in one’s skills to adopt such working style and strategy, specially in an industry that is conformist by nature. It may be good to be in Aamir’s shoes now (after all the success that has come his way), but I am sure the nineties were equally frustrating for him, when his working style was considered more of stepping on to other’s shoes and the media against him.

        • Raja sen really wanted to put Aamir in bad light in this write-up, maybe the srk fan in him has come to the front. But its silly really. One cant be criticized for having a vision for the films he works in and then ensuring the execution matches up to it with his inputs. Specially when the visions turn out to be as successful as they have been.

There are other pertinent stuff on which Aamir can be criticized – like being a workaholic by his own admissions. He keeps immersed in his work all the time, brings work to home and is not much of a family guy. He is also hardly an one-woman guy for long (going by various rumors). But then such accusation dont make much sense, as most in the industry are like that. I like his films and his work, but cant say I will be v pleased to be in his shoes.

‘You dense, ignorant imbecile’: Priyanka Chopra faces online backlash for ‘inaccurate’ Sikkim comments

Actor Priyanka Chopra landed herself in a controversy after saying in an interview at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that Sikkim is a state “troubled by insurgency” and Pahuna, a film produced by her company, is the first to come out of the region. People were quick to point out that Sikkim remains “one of the most peaceful states” in India and also named some of the compelling films that came out of the region.

Speaking in an interview after Pahuna received a standing ovation at TIFF, Priyanka told ET Canada, “Sikkim is a small state in the North-east of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made a film from the region. This is the first film ever that’s come out of that region, because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.”

She added about the theme of Pahuna, “This is a film about two kids and their perspective on the refugee crisis on being moved from one place to another without understanding the reason.” Priyanka is also the brand ambassador of Assam.

While Sikkim’s film industry is yet in a nascent stage, films have been made in the state and even received wide critical acclaim. Prashant Rasaily, a very talented filmmaker, has made acclaimed films like Katha and Acharya. This year a Lepcha film ‘Dhokbu’ premiered which also earned a lot of praise.

Priyanka’s statements have attracted a backlash online and people are asking her to get her facts right. Here are some of the reactions:

The first eight months of 2017 has seen surprise hits like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Hindi Medium. The same period has seen unexpected flops like Salman Khan’s Tubelight, Shah Rukh’s Jab Harry Met Sejal and Ranbir Kapoor’s Jagga Jasoos.

A parallel group of actors is emerging who are talented and charge much less than the superstars, but are highly effective. These actors have got their hands on the pulse of the nation and deliver every time, well almost. From Pankaj Tripathi to Deepak Dobriyal, from Seema Pahwa to Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, from Rajesh Sharma to Sanjai Mishra, these are the actors you know as well as your family members and who quietly add depth and familiarity to the films.

But how do they explain this shift in the audience’s mood and mindset? Pankaj Tripathi, the unsung hero of Nil Battey Sannata, Anaarkali Of Aarah and Bareilly Ki Barfi, says, “A thought came to my mind just before our conversation about how our perspective changes. If a person can’t be bought with money, he is considered good, but if an actor isn’t saleable then it’s bad (Laughs). So, it’s all about economics. Those who were considered not good enough to fetch money are doing better now.”

He elaborates his point, “The youth and others are watching Netflix and they form a big part of the movie-goers. The films which made me cry during my college days in the ‘90s look funny now. Even now, the cinema is changing at a rapid pace. If your content is not good then even superstars can’t save a film.”

A star-driven film industry like Bollywood is under intense scrutiny. Tripathi says, “Single screens might not have changed much, but multiplexes have entirely changed. Everybody with a social media profile is a critic and they judge really fast. So, if you’re not good at holding attention then you’re not likely to sustain.”

This week will see a clash between Simran (Kangana Ranaut) and Lucknow Central (Farhan Akhtar). Kangana Ranuat is probably a mini star after the success of the Tanu Weds Manu films while Farhan Akhtar has yet to establish though Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was a big hit it was more to do with the acceptance of the character of Milkha rather than the actor being accepted. The other Farhan Akhtar films pretty much bear testimony to that. The promotional campaign of Simran by the makers has been to delve on the the various controversies of the lead heroine Kangana Ranaut has been involved in over the last few years. This sort of stuff helps to get the media excited and lots of media coverage but the audience will not buy it.

This will probably be evident when Simran opens as the audience is only coming for what they see in the promos and that is nothing much with Simran and this campaign of Simran which has been everything but about the film is not going to help much. Sadly its the wrong way to promote a film as you are not actually promoting the film and on top it has a director who has made films like Aligarh, Citylights and Shahid so a good film does look out of the question unless the director surpasses his previous works by leaps and bounds.

Lucknow Central is a film similar to Qaidi Band released a few weeks back and with cinema today being about relatabilty its going to be tough for a film about prisioners to be relatabale to the audience. As both films really dont have much going for them it will probably come down to face value initially. Although Kangana Ranaut has limited face value its probably more than Farhan Akhtar and this could give the initial edge to Simran though with such low collections expected you cant really put any bets on it.

Baadshaho has not done well overall but there are a couple of places where the film is a HIT. One is Bihar where the film will beat most films this year barring Bahubali – The Conclusion and maybe one or two others but that will only be know at the end of next week.

The other place where the film is a HIT is Gulf as it easily becomes the highest grosser of Ajay Devgn and heads for business of around $1.5 million. It was aided by a big weekend due to Eid but has still held up pretty well. The film will beat the numbers of the two biggest outright Hindi films this year (Toilet Ek Prem Katha and Badrinath Ki Dulhnaia) in Gulf.

Baadshaho is also poor in overseas as it has not contributed much after the first week. The film’s total gross is $2.25 million which is lower than a smaller film like Mubarakan. The other holdover release Shubh Mangal Saavdhan has collected $1.1 million so far. Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha has now also finished its overseas run. It is the 7th highest overseas grosser of 2017.

Shahrukh Khan’s Raees still tops the list by a good margin. It is followed by another SRK starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal. Raees is likely to remain at the top until the release of Christmas release Tiger Zinda Hai.

    • Is Kangana Ranaut The New Aamir Khan?
Kangana Ranaut is considered a ‘difficult’ actress on set, as well as a demanding negotiator with an unrealistic sense of self-worth. How do you solve a problem like Kangana Ranaut?
      Raja Sen

The outspoken actress is breaking down the showbiz status quo with her inconvenient truths. How right is she, and how much does our scrutiny of Kangana reveal about our own double standards?

How do you solve a problem like Kangana Ranaut? The narrative is bothersome, to say the least, which is why I suggest a quick recap of the prickliest parts. Her timing – as she parades facts about alleged ex-lovers Hrithik Roshan and Aditya Pancholi just before the release of her new film – feels distastefully opportunistic. By her own account, she has had affairs with married men and has gone on to complain about those men to their wives and fathers. Her helpless, put-upon story doesn’t quite add up, and several details appear askew.

She is considered a ‘difficult’ actress on set, as well as a demanding negotiator with an unrealistic sense of self-worth. She has angered numerous collaborators, and rumours about her sound both malicious and believable. She has offered no defence about hijacking Ketan Mehta’s Rani Lakshmibai project, putting together a film on the same subject – with another director, at another studio – after agreeing to do the film for Mehta. She has gotten into an ugly spat regarding writing credits on her latest film, Simran. All of 31, she has audaciously declared that she will direct or co-direct all her upcoming films.

She has even made nepotism a bad word simply by repeating it a lot, ironically while employing her sister as her manager. Yet Kangana speaks her truth, and by doing so and never backing down, has become such an anti-patriarchy poster child that it is nearly impossible to criticise her today.

Nearly, and yet we manage. Which is to miss the point entirely, in my opinion. The question is not how accurate Kangana is about her allegations, both romantic and writerly, or how reproachfully she should be admonished for various flaws and insinuations. The real question is why on earth so many of us are so keen to point fingers? We can choose not to agree with her, but instead we defame and accuse. She has raised the industry’s hackles. Is this because her tell-all persona is inconvenient to a community that prefers its skeletons closeted? Or is she widely labelled out of control primarily because she’s a woman?

I ask since several broadsides I see levelled at Kangana Ranaut sound dashed familiar. They make me think, to be precise, of Aamir Khan.

In May 2006, just before Fanaa was released, Khan – the film’s leading man – went on the record to lambast the BJP’s handling of the Narmada Dam issue in Gujarat. He spoke passionately about the cause and joined in with activists, but after the film had released, was nowhere to be seen and didn’t mention the subject publicly. Khan has since gained a certain infamy for making newsy headlines prior to a film release, and while we cast aspersions on Ranaut for going on about Hrithik Roshan before Simran hits theatres, Khan is admired as a cunning operator for this very reason.

One of the industry’s most persistent rumours has to do with Khan ‘directing’ most of the movies he stars in, and tales of his on-set interference are legendary. It is whispered that Khan chooses filmmakers who are willing to submit to his vision, and because their films without Khan don’t do as well as the ones he makes with them – and he specifically makes one film apiece with most directors – Khan is widely considered as the guy who “really” made the film happen. For her on-set exactitude, Ranaut is branded a troublemaker even as this behaviour earned Khan his ‘perfectionist’ tag.

Back in 2007, Taare Zameen Par producer Aamir Khan had an awful row with the film’s original director Amol Gupte, culminating in Gupte forced to back off the project and the direction credit going to Khan himself. Ranaut had a messy struggle about writing credits with Simran screenwriter Apurva Asrani, and as this trail of emails shows, it isn’t likely to end amicably. Ranaut continues to repeatedly be grilled on the subject, as opposed to Khan who got away with a shrug – and plenty of applause.

After the success of Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Ranaut rightly refuses to settle for low renumeration and holds out for a bigger piece of the pie. In an interview, she claimed to be paid 80% of what Ranbir Kapoor/Ranveer Singh make, which is a giant statement considering this industry is so lopsided that Shahid Kapoor makes significantly more money per film than Deepika Padukone. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan has reportedly struck an unprecedented deal with Yash Raj Films for the upcoming Thugs Of Hindostan where he will get a whopping 60% of the film’s profits. None of these numbers may actually be true, but most producers I have spoken to applaud Khan’s acumen, while they wait for one flop to bring Ranaut “down to earth.”

Are we being fair? Are we calling it down the middle? As evidenced by the opening paragraphs of this piece, I am not an all-applauding member of Team Kangana. I also do not think Aamir Khan resembles Kangana Ranaut, or that she will someday direct an all-girls Lagaan remake. I merely believe it’s worth examining the way you and I instinctively react to instances of similar behaviour between a successful man and a successful woman. Between a Khan and a woman who doesn’t need a Khan.

The film’s director Omung Kumar is nonplussed as the rape forms the crux of the theme. Says an informed source, “The makers argued that the rape is very important to the film. They even cited the example of the recent Sridevi starrer Mom where a rape was at the core of the plot. But the argument did not hold water as in Mom, no rape was shown. In fact producer Boney Kapoor had removed all the graphic suggestions of sexual violation to make the product more palatable to a family audience.”

Be it Pahlaj Nihalani or Prasoon Joshi, things do not seem to have become any less strict at Central Board of Film Certification. Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Simran is reportedly the latest victim to undergo the brutal scissors of censor board.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, the board recommended 10 cuts in the film, all of which have been accepted by the filmmakers. The word ‘b**ch’ has been omitted in six places. “Derogating women by gesture or language will never be permissible under any guideline, be it Pahlaj or Prasoon,” a source from the film told the daily.

Another, more unbelievable change was the order to reduce the characters’ load moans during sex. “The sound effect made the sex scene look far more provocative than it actually was so it was asked to be toned down,” the source added. The censor board also asked the makers to tone down the sound effects of a slap in a scene.

  68. Abhishek Bachchan has one of the most interesting Instagram accounts, with some beautiful pictures and interesting memories.

The actor posts a picture from the sets of his film Ravan, co-starring wife Aishwarya. The film was directed by Mani Ratnam.

AB Jr writes, ‘The 2 mani’s discussing something on my face! Mani Ratnam and Mani Kandan (cinematographer). This was whilst filming the song Thok De Killi. A very difficult song to shoot because of the location. We had built the set on top of a river. The flooring was extremely slippery making it difficult to walk let alone dance.’

‘I was recovering from a septic leg wound I got during shooting a few weeks earlier and a high fever.’

‘But all of this paled in comparison to having to be careful of the few dozen snakes that had decided to make the set their temporary home! Can’t remember too many people sitting in between takes (ha ha ha) funny now, terrifying then. FYI I don’t like snakes. We would occasionally see them swimming around in the water, yes, they swim!!’

‘Highlight was, at the end of the song suddenly Mani comes up with the idea that we should all jump into the water in the last shot!!! Perfect!!’
