  1. Trailer is good. And I also liked the song. Hope other songs are as good if not more. Seems to be an entertainer for the family audience. Remember AHAT which was also based on singing? Though it failed at BO, it was one of the memorable movies and Manisha looked very beautiful.
Here the girl has stolen the scene in every frame and Aamir is providing star value.

Manisha ruined AHAT with that sobby face. God knows how people were comparing her with the vivacious Madhuri who I did not like much but had a nice female voice. Manisha gave flops after flops with all the top heroes and directors until poor lady fell off the charts and then the ailments.

Come to think of…..aamir and mansoor were big time xerox copies and counter scripting hollywood classics. For this movie they did not even leave the songs…..why did u break my heart …anu malik singing ughh !!

Title song and Raja Ko Rani was good. Of Course the title track with kid is more identified due to our own aging….

      • If one has been through a heart wrenching break up he or she can easy relate to words in this song. They lyrics are simple and real and of course good music and singing just takes it to another level.

    • She was given sobby roles. But she is a very beautiful woman IMO. Not plastic, not too commercial. She never failed as an actress whether it is Dil Se or AHAT or Khamoshi. She had a huge commercial success with Nana Patekar in Agnisakshi. 1942 A Love Story with Anil Kapoor. And Bombay with Arvind Swamy.

      • Well, it was the most talked about film during that period. And the songs were and are very good in that film. Nowadays that sort of melody has disappeared altogether.

        • It was most talked about film but at the same time, I don’t think it did anything at the boxoffice. Bombay was hit but even that was not a huge hit.

Songs were very good, if I’m not mistaking I think somebody related to bhansali had shot the kuch na kaho song.

Melody is a thing of past, nowadays all songs sound same and all singers sound same too.

The worst offender is Arijit Singh. He is so monotonous to listen to these days. Even the latest srk movie he sounds all the same. Except of Tum Hi Ho and Janam Janam I am never connected with his songs. Gerua he sang well but srk/red chillies overboard with vfx.

Jubin Nautiyal sounds a bit different. Mohd Irfan started well but could not capitalise on this –

    • Same feelings and I think it will do very well and not just well. Golmaal 4 should be worried. This be huge and do over 150 and even 200cr IMO(depends on how big Aamir’s role will end up). Aamir coming right after PK and Dangal and he’s a such big star and influence currently than he was in during TZP (pre-Ghajini).

Personally, not interested in such movies which talk the issues superficially. All the reality TV shows are ruining children’s lives and education. Youngsters run away from family and come for the shows and for every 1 genuine talented kid there are thousands who are no talented but want to pursue their dreams and ruin their lives. Shoojit Sircar recently commented on this and I know this movie is not about reality TV but the kids are same who want to pursue dreams and instead of TV show, she is doing on youtube.
There are multiple issues in this topic.. either the kid is ignoring studies and pursuing the dream to sing which makes the father angry. Or father is just jackass who don’t want her kid to do singing as he don’t like it.

But if the movie is handle well, it can be good one but trailer wise it looks very superficial(& commercial) to me compared to TZP which was very deep and touching. It can do well for massy folks but those are looking something deep for such topic will be left underwhelmed.

Overall good trailer and easy success is given.

      Like

      • Firstly, Aamir’s role is of 40 mins in the film. Its not a cameo.

Secondly, this trailer is not superficial in any sense. It just focuses on the basic premise instead of revealing too much of the story or narrative. And it introduces the main characters. Its a good idea since the trailer has been released 12 weeks before the release. There is no point in revealing too much at this point and it just serves as an extension of the previous teaser. The film is a musical and the rest of the promotions will revolve around the songs. By Aamir’s own admission Amit Trivedi has done a good job with the music.

The teaser was average. But this trailer is good (nothing great though). The idea is to make maximum number of people to be aware of the movie, and the trailer will grab the required attention, it is good enough. Attaching it with JHMS prints will help the cause.

The BO returns will depend on how the film turns out to be. If it is at the level of this trailer then 100+ cr is on the cards. If it turns out to be exceptional like TZP then 200-250 cr is a possibility.

200 – 250 cr is ridiculous even if we take the best case scenario here noway its coming close to that number and nobody in trade not even fans expecting so much from a small film . I don’t know how much footage Aamir has there but whether its a 30 min role or 40 would not make much difference obviously its not a full fledged Aamir film also Aamir himself said in an interview he is playing a cameo .

          Like

        • 62.5 cr nett for TZP in 2007 was also a ridiculous number, but it happened. And it was beyond most expectations, be it fan or trade. 200-250 cr is the best case scenario for a multiplex driven film working mainly in the cities. Its same for JHMS too. BO depends on audience connect than big/small budgets. Advantage of small budget is that it will be a hit even at much smaller nett collections.

          Like

        • Aamir’s brand is strong but I think predicting such high figures – even he’ll smile! Every film that has gone north of 200 CR (except 3 Idiots) opened above 20 CR, unless I’ve missed another – it’s improbable even during Diwali that SS can go so high.

This can open like Dear Zindagi and sustain better to get 100 CR +. At some point though fans of Aamir Khan films will become bored that every other film is a social message. So glad Thugs is coming even though it might be another D3 mess.

          Like

        • Difficult to predict the opening at this point. It will depend on the final print count and the buzz it generates in the coming 12 weeks of promotion. I think it has started well enough with interesting posters and good trailer. However, they have started the promotions quite early, I guess to attract the multiplex audience by attaching it with JHMS prints. The key will be to have decent promo material to sustain the buzz for 12 weeks, without revealing too much.

Anyways, coming back to the opening, I am guessing that the best case scenario would be an Airlift like print count of 2000 screens concentrating on multiplexes and A tier single screens in cities. With such a release the opening day Diwali holiday can go up to 17 cr or so. I doubt if it will be only a metro movie like DZ (8-9 cr opening), but should work in the tier A cities too. The lifetime collections will depend on the movie itself. It should be an easy 100 cr film imo.

Obviously it feels safe really – seems the opposite of TZP. A child here has talent that is visible but not allowed to pursue whereas TZP it was more hidden talent. And Aamir rather than being an introvert is more extrovert. Seems familiar terrain, but being based on musical interests, music is the key.

The only portions I liked in this trailer is where Aamir is present. Rest is ok. The dialogue promos that came in earlier were very funny though. When our kids were younger, we used to show them foreign animated films which are only for kids. And that is definitely something we should do.

Both Dangal and this film are based on the same topic… That we look differently at our daughters. And probably we aren’t able to give the same treatment to our daughters as our sons. So, ‘Secret Superstar‘ is another film based on empowerment of the girl child.”

Had watched the trailer in a hurry yesterday. Revisiting it today with less excitement is bringing out the nuances. Overall it is a good trailer.

  22. Is Aamir Khan playing Nadeem Saifi in Secret Superstar?
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Aug 5, 2017 – 10:28 am IST

It is more about the swagger than the swag. Aamir Khan has gone on-record to confess he was reluctant to play the music director Shakti Kumar in Secret Superstar. Well, it can now be told that the character is based on the 1990s superstar-composer Nadeem Saifi who together with his partner Shravan Rathod changed the profile of film soundtracks all through the 1990s.

A source in the know says, “When the role of the on-the-roll music director Shakti Kumar in Secret Superstar was written it was definitely Nadeem Saifi who was the role model. It’s the role of a super-successful music director who is a big flirt. Aamir was in fact shy of playing someone so flamboyant and slightly cheesy. But once he agreed to do so, Aamir went the whole hog with the Nadeem inspired get-up including the goatee.”

    • Aamir & Mansoor had already gone after Nadeem in AHAT. So he was asked about this Nadeem angle during the press conference. He said Shakti Kumar’s role is modeled after quite a few personalities in Bollywood.

I thought the way he says “I am tired” at the award show is like Anil Kapoor. And his arrogance as a reality show judge is much like Anu Malik’s.

  23. Secret Superstar almost cost Zaira Wasim Aamir Khan’s Dangal and a National Award

Zaira Wasim hit jackpot thanks to her stellar performance as the young Geeta Phogat in Dangal. In fact, she received a National Award as well for her debut. However, turns out Secret Superstar’s director Advait Chandan didn’t want her to pick Dangal! During the trailer launch of their upcoming film, Secret Superstar, Aamir revealed that Advait was apprehensive of Zaira to make her debut in Dangal. He quoted, “Jab hum screen test kar rahe the Dangal ka tab Hume Zaira mili. I liked her work, so I told Advait that he can take her in this film. Advait ne test liye aur mujhe kaha inhe Dangal mein mat lo. But of course she was in Dangal and she did a fab job. And I’m glad that she is in Secret Superstar.” (When we were getting a screen test done for Dangal, we met Zaira. I liked her work so I told Advait that he can take her in his film. Advait took a test and asked me not to take her in Dangal. But of course, she was in Dangal and did a fab job.)

Clearly Advait wanted the very talented artiste to make a debut in his film. During the launch, Zaira revealed that she was utterly stumped to see Aamir on the sets of Secret Superstar. Having worked with the actor, previously in Dangal, she didn’t expect to share screen space with him in her second film as well. She quoted, “After having seen him in Dangal, I was shocked to see him as Shakti Kumar.” We have already seen the teaser that was out last year, prior to the release of Dangal.

Don’t know much about this Pakistani music director M Ashraf but I saw a program on youtube and just about every songs NS copied, were songs of M Ashraf. Not just NS, other music directors did too.

Bappi and RD has few songs too which they copied.

May turn out to be a fine film if the story and screenplay is v good, but not sure of its BO prospects. That may well depend on how much Aamir is in the film. It is clashing with an entertainer like Golmaal Again, and may well suffer at the BO if it is not a good film.

    • agreed. but given that Aamir is the producer and has a meaty role in it – the first 3 days will be a cool 60-80 cr min. then it will depend on trending.

      Like

      • There is of course Aamir’s brand value associated with this film. But I think the opening will depend on how the promotion shapes up and the buzz it generates before release. It has a 4 day Diwali weekend, so expecting around 60 cr over 4 days is reasonable (if WOM turns out v good then it may go higher). If it does 100 cr lifetime, it will be fine I guess for a Hit/Superhit tag, considering its low production budget.

I am sure Aamir will have his say on the post-production and final cut. But Advait Chandan has shot it (who seems pretty average from what we can see till now), and there is only so much one can do in editing and post production stage. Due to low costs it is pretty safe, but dont know if it can be a significant grosser.

They are pretty much building on the promo material – the theatrical trailer was kind of an extension of the teaser, and the first song is one that was playing in the background of the trailer. The story and narrative is not being exposed much, so difficult to predict how the movie will be. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

I like the song though, it grows on you.

I don’t think Aamir himself is expecting here a major BB kind of deal and it is a dark horse for him made with minimum budget with all newcomers……he knows that his name will bring in atleast 100 cr in diwali days….so what he is doing now is his typical marketing style promos….remember Ghajini marketing on TV….practically every channel ran the 60 sec promos for 30 days before release non-stop…..ha ha…..this man is a marketing wizard:-) so for this movie….it is a musical film which BW hasn’t seen for a while…last was what? Aashiqui 2? after that?

    • I doubt if 100 cr will come easy, even on Diwali. It will all boil down to how the film turns out to be. But yes I agree it is a dark horse, both critically and BO wise.

It is good to see Aamir backing new talents. He is smartly doing it with minimum investment. If this turns out to be a sleeper Hit/Superhit, then its a bonus. Otherwise also recovering its money wont be a problem – Diwali release with Aamir’s muscle behind the promotion will see to it. Just like DG recovered its low investment based on opening weekend business itself. And Aamir is a bigger brand now after D3, PK and Dangal. So we can assume it will get at least good opening figures. Trending is what we will have to see.

The biggest risk is debutant director Advait. He is an in-house talent for AKP, who had been production manager for TZP and Assistant Director for DG. So he has some experience to back him. And AKP has been backing new/debutant directors through out its journey, which had worked well for them.

For a musical, the music has to click. Its a good start with Main Kaun Hoon, but lets see how other songs turn out to be.

  31. Film will massively depend on music. Unfortunately today’s music is all about stuff like Character Dheela, Twist, Mauja Mauja, Selfie etc and unless the music hits this peak in these genres I can’t see huge interest in very mellow, rhythmic music with lyrics. Think JHMS proved that, but there the film probably didn’t give the music the deserved exposure.

Couple of things massively working for the film are Aamir’s association. That alone will be put to the test. Also the fact that marketing has started early which might mean the film has shaped up well. Probably that as with Talaash it was clear Aamir was not happy with the final product so the marketing was very limited and not as gung ho.

I doubt such huge numbers in first few days. The lion’s share of screens will be Golmaal 4’s and that’s the big Diwali film. This is very much the Welcome vs. TZP reboot scenario. I doubt as many tend to doubt that TZP was expected to put up a huge fight, not only that but trend astonishingly well back in 2007, here a good start is the Dear Zindagi range but a better trending film. That film managed near 50 CR in first week – if content is strong here I’d expect similar first week numbers but a much bigger final total than Dear Zindagi’s 65 CR odd.

If 5000 screens are available – I doubt SS to get anything more than 35% initially. G4 and prior success is too massy to not get a big screen count. SS is mainly going to be a multiplex film so a double digit start will be exceptional enough. And that screen share can always change. G4 is your classic front loaded film – it’ll get poor reviews but will get bums on seats. TZP is your old school runner – it could be a total failure or a marathon fighter.

Welcome hit 75 CR odd, TZP 60 CR odd. Both had good trends but TZP was exceptional as it must have been at least 4 times first week.

Expectations are gravely different today. G4 is a 200 CR bracket film whereas SS would be fine with 100 CR. Diwali’s biggest collections were JTHJ VS SOS, plus 200 CR. The HNY numbers are not trustworthy at all.

If you double the Welcome/TZP result it works only for SS. G4 will surely need to be minimum double Welcome, SS doesn’t need to be double TZP.

Nutshell is the economics favour SS hugely but box office wise it’ll need to be very good content to get even 100 CR. G4 just needs to be passable like the other 3 films and in today’s standards it’ll be a hit, SS will need to work for it. I doubt a DZ result is deemed a success. That’s the total 10 years ago for TZP give or take a few crores. I doubt Aamir is in the 2007 game.

    • The combined screen count for Kaabil and Raees earlier this year was around 6000 as per BOI. If SS gets 35% of these screens, it will release on roughly 2000 screens. There has been reports that AKP is also looking at 2000 screens for SS. That is the same range in which Airlift was released, which was also a multiplex oriented release, mainly in cities. Airlift scored 17 cr on its first Sunday and also on Republic day holiday. So basically that is the max we can expect per day. SS is releasing on Diwali holiday. Aamir is a much bigger brand now than during TZP and if promotion goes well, music clicks and generates enough buzz, then it may open in 15-17 cr range. If the buzz remains lukewarm, then it will perhaps open in the same range as Toilet of 12-13 cr. Considering Diwali and Aamir brand, I dont see SS opening any less than that. I would predict a 4-day opening weekend anywhere between 50-60 cr, depending on WOM.

Regarding Dear Zindagi, it opened only in 1100 screens and scored 8 cr opening day. The difference is that it scored only in the metros, but SS with its small town feel should do well in smaller cities apart from the metros. At least, that will be the expectation. DZ opened at 32-33 cr on 3-day weekend and could only double it to end around 65-66 cr. Had it trended well enough and tripled its weekend haul, then it would have done 100 cr, even if the collections were metro driven. It had happened before with Barfi. But DZ fell short.

For SS I would expect the first 3 days to fetch 40-45 cr (& 50-60 cr over 4 day weekend). If it trends well enough it should triple that amount and end at 120-135 cr (which would be double of TZP’s 60-62 cr haul in 2007). I would say TZP in today’s market would do 200 cr, but I dont see SS getting there. TZP had exceptional WOM and trending which is v difficult to replicate.

As for music, the first song has got mainly positive feedback, but isnt chartbuster material. I doubt if the album will be any different, so we are not looking at chartbuster music. But that may not be a problem if the songs sync well with the narrative and mood of the film. If the movie clicks as a whole, I feel this kind of music can become bigger hit after release.

Basically Aamir brand will be tested thoroughly on the opening day, boosted by the Diwali holiday. Afterwards it will depend on the film and WOM. I think we will be looking at roughly 15 cr opening on 2000 screens (plus-minus 2 cr depending on the final buzz).

      • few more factors which can work for SS are:

        1) Diwali is just not 4 days weekend, schools usually have a longer diwali vacations and this will have huge no. of children-parents-family going for SS
        2) So if 17 cr max per day is for 2000 screen ( I doubt it will get that less no. because Aamir is a Mega-brand and he can dictate terms so atleast 3000 screen is a given deal here).
3). G3 was not a BB deal – https://www.boxofficeindia.com/movie.php?movieid=5 – there u go – 150 Gross=100 cr nett – that is not big. but screen-count was just 1750! so yeah there u may have bigger no….but audience is not buying any such big brand also these days….even Raaz reboot failed……so howlong G series can go on….that is a test

        • It may not be a great idea to release it in 3000 screens. That would mean single screens in B and C centers, where such movie hardly has much appeal. JHMS released in 3200 screens and was outright rejected in the single screens. Its better to go for a smaller release for a small film like SS imo.

Regarding Golmaal Again, I really dont care much. The genre is different and there is space for 2 different films in Diwali. Its going to be regular stuff from Rohit Shetty, dont know if audience is in the mood to entertain it (recently Mubarakan did relatively well in the comedy genre).

          Like

        • actually I think this subject does have great appeal even in smaller centers. Over the years musical reality shows have really penetrated in these markets. also consider just how many of the contestants also come from precisely these parts of India. Of course everything depends on the kind of film made (as always) but in terms of the subject I don’t really see a limitation here. I’d also add that barring masala (a relatively recent thing) most films in Bollywood are just made for A centers anyway. Or at the most a multiplex network across India. This is where a lot of times when people say films are doing well in B, C centers or whatever it’s an illusion. Because they’re doing well in a B center multiplex, not more generally. That is a distinction.

I think this film will be an easy success. The extent to which Aamir’s connection with the project takes it to a different level altogether is a different debate but one shouldn’t actually start there. A 100 crores would be a very good result for this film, anything more would be excellent or outstanding or even phenomenal (depending on where the gross finally settles down). I certainly don’t rule out the latter but I don’t ‘begin’ there!

          Liked by 1 person

        • I think the single screens in B & C centers will opt for Golmaal, given a choice. SS may work in the multiplexes of such centers, in which case AKP may look at a wider release of maybe 3000 screens or so. If it turns out to be an universal hit, then it is likely to do much more than 100 cr. But even 100 cr would be enough for it to be a BO Hit/Superhit, given the low budget and all.

      • The material itself is such that it will be difficult to hype it up (the type of songs, etc). They just need to generate enough interest in the film to attract a decent opening. The WOM should do the rest.

This is as small a film as Toilet. With Aamir’s name attached it should open in the same range as Toilet in my books (12-13 cr), if not more. The opening will be an acid test on Aamir’s brand equity. TZP opened v low, but Aamir was not as big a name at that time (after RDB and Fanaa) as he is today (after Ghajini, 3I, D3, PK and Dangal). So lets see.

It should be a winner no doubt, but the opening collections will be interesting enough to draw some insights about quite a few things.

      • Its too early to compare any song of SS with TZP. Of course, expectations from music of SS is high as it is a musical. But the songs need to work more with the narrative than as standalone stuff. TZP was a rare sleeper blockbuster, it would have done 200+ cr at BO in today’s scenario. I doubt if SS will be able to repeat that. It will do well to get to 100+ cr total, looking at the promotional material so far.

The muslim family angle may play an important role in this film or it should. Just having a father opposing a girl’s singing dreams does not create enough of an interesting conflict, unless the pressure on middle-class muslim females exerted by the community as a whole is depicted properly. It is a sensitive topic and the director’s sensibilities need to be mature enough to guide it through.

This song is not as good as the first one IMO. But the picturization is much more dynamic and works well. It has an emotional quotient and from this song promo it feels that this film may find an emotional connect with its audience.

It is one of the safest small films backed by a superstar, so recovery here is not going to be a problem (probably the weekend business will be enough for that).

Considering the low financial risk here, I think the BO should be judged purely by the trending aspect. It will probably open in 30-35 cr in the first 3 days. If it trends like Dear Zindagi, it will double that to get to 65 cr. It it trends like Pink, it will triple its weekend collection to get to 100 cr or so. And if it can trend like Hindi Medium, it will do 5-6 times its first 3 days. Hindi Medium is a rare film that trended really well, much like TZP did.

Superstar Aamir Khan has taken his manager Advait Chandan under his wings, after the Lagaan actor decided to act in his debut film Secret Superstar.

Advait, who considers Aamir as his guru, says, “I auditioned Aamir for the role and that audition was so funny. We were so sure that nobody could pull off that role like him,” he explains. The debutant filmmaker reveals that he was worried about disappointing the A-list star. He says, “Aamir doesn’t approve of mediocrity. It is scary to meet his standards. We work at our own pace hence we thought we won’t be able to release the film by August 4, due to which we also had to postpone the release date,” he added.

Secret Superstar is the story of a small-town girl played by Zaira Wasim, who wants to be a world-famous singer, and how Aamir mentors her. Aamir will be seen playing singer Shakti Kumar in Secret Superstar. Advait reveals he had written the script keeping him in mind. He says, “I had written this particular character for Aamir Khan, but I never told him this. It’s too much to ask in one breath. He was already producing the film, so I thought it would be too much if I ask him to act as well. After I got signed as a director, I told him that I had written the part for him.”

The filmmaker reveals that his fans have a surprise in store when they watch Aamir onscreen. He says, “This tedhapanti suits him. It’s the most tedha character Aamir has ever played,” he added.

Advait, who is now a director, also misses being Aamir’s manager. He says, “Aamir’s life is so exciting. I miss working with him as a manager. You get to learn something from him daily. He works 24/7. When I stopped working with him, I didn’t know what I was doing with my life. Now I would like to assist him whenever he directs a film.”

Going by these making videos, it seems this movie made from more of Aamir and Kiran’s contribution, than from him. Either he is not getting his due, or is more like a background shadow of Aamir. The latter is perhaps closer to the truth IMO. If this film works out well, Aamir can consider it another feather in his cap.

PS – I believe there was a similar scenario with Amol Gupte during TZP, before the fall-out. Advait is perhaps being careful to not repeat that.

        • My point was that Advait does not want to come out of Aamir’s shadow. He says he wants to next ‘assist’ Aamir, when Aamir takes to direction. He is obviously a ‘yes-man’ guy to Aamir & Kiran since TZP/DG days. How much contribution do you think he has made in this film? That is the question. My take is that SS is likely to be as much an ‘Aamir film’ as TZP probably was. Success, failure or just another average film – SS outcome will probably lie more on Aamir’s shoulder than Advait’s (who does not seem to have plans to write-direct again anytime soon).

If Amol Gupte has not been able to make his mark after TZP, nor has Aamir directed any film to prove his worth as an ‘independent’ film-maker. From Aamir’s body of work, it seems he works v well in tandem with guyz (directors and other technical crew) who share his vision of a film. Otherwise there is usually a fall-out. Happened with PL director too.

As for independent director/film-maker, Aamir has to switch to direction full-time and prove his worth. This may not happen anytime soon, so we will not know till then. I personally feel he is best suited in the role of a creative director for a project, if one goes by the hollywood paradigm.

        • Gut feel with these interviews is the film has shaped up strongly – I remember TZP got tremendous industry support pre release. With TZP reading between the lines Amol Gupte probably had a more realistic application of the story that was not as commercial as Aamir’s vision. Ultimately Aamir is commercial without being noisy unless it’s a noisy film like Ghajini or D3 – if this guy is ballsy enough to state in the media that the standard is high for AKP, I would assume he’s met that standard. Usually the drill is a subdued pre release ala Talaash where Aamir feels the film is not what he wanted or he fires a warning in Dhobi Ghat’s case that the film is not mainstream. Here the noise is very positive.

TZP was golden as I found it quite a universal theme. I wonder how this theme is going to play out. Many reality shows are quite unproductive and controversial, this seems like another parent Vs child story with social backdrop.

I think if he’s not positive he would find a way to disengage with his film or reduce audience expectations to lower his goodwill lost. Here, by pushing to a Diwali release date he’s picked a very visible date suggesting a winner. No one admits such things in public but he knows the pulse of the audience.

  49. Another interview below from Advait about Aamir and Secret Superstar. It is interesting that this movie with its reality TV show theme was conceptualized by Advait while they were working on another TV show – Satyamev Jayate. And he later wrote the script sitting in Aamir’s vanity van while Aamir would shoot for D3 and then PK.

After Aamir signed on Advait as director, SS went into pre-production from 2015, but shooting was delayed by 9 months since Zaira was asked to complete shooting for Dangal first. It went on floors in latter half of 2016, and it is finally releasing on Diwali 2017. Interestingly, there is a lot of history behind the making of this film (as usual), and hopefully they will focus on the writing and directing part in one of the making videos. I always find these aspects as the most interesting part of any film.

Unfortunately, showbiz relies more on marketing the films in sensational ways than highlighting all the hard work and grind that goes on behind the scenes. Even our biopics focus more on sensationalizing the ‘achievements’ rather than all the gritty hard work and acumen behind it, be it MS Dhoni or Dangal.

In Dangal, I would have liked to see a lot more of the daily grind and struggles/frustration of Mahavir Phogat, who had an extremely difficult life, as he had to give up his job and sustain his family with farming in order to find enough time to train his girls. The movie touched that aspect with a scene or two, but didnt really go in depth of depicting the mundane struggles of his life. The focus was given more to the daughters’ training and winning ways. Much like how the marketing focus on Dangal was on Aamir losing his physical weight, rather than 15-16 hours of daily hard work that went into making the film for 2-3 years continuously without taking breaks on Sundays! (Advait vouches for such working style of Aamir in another interview I posted above)

And I doubt how many of his fans would personally endorse such a working lifestyle in their own lives, no matter how much entertainment they get from his films or how much they celebrate the BO numbers or debate/fight over his ranking in the industry! However, I see no point in celebrating/sensationalizing any achievement, unless we are equally appreciating the painstaking hard work and also the acumen/strategies that goes behind it.

Its hardly possible to achieve great success unless you give it your all (no matter how talented you are). Hope he gives his staff sundays off without them asking for it and some occasional holidays. A director must have an equal relationship with the star and here it seems a bit unequal. And if one feels it is too burdensome, one can always leave and find something less taxing.

  50. Average song and visuals. The promotion is going the TEPK way. The trailer was good, but the song promos did not live up to expectations. Even Aamir seems to have been more involved in the initial phases than now. This Sapna Re song has been released without Aamir tweeting about it or posting it in facebook. My interest in this is going downward like what happened with TEPK. TEPK turned out to be a v average film in the end.

    • I think promotions are bang on – this is an emotional and sentimental film – so it has to be a soberish kind of promotion – anything glossy will take away the very purpose…..it is an effort to connect the young audience and also the music-loving audience…..aamir’s brand will ensure massive BO of 100+ cr in 5 days diwali holidays….so all the rest is to create more audience and I am happy with this rather normal marketing….

    • There is truth in what you say about Aamir’s brand at this point. But that may not mean much for this film, as Aamir only has a supporting role. The media by large is delegating it as extended cameo or guest appearance only. Read somewhere that he has 40 minutes of screen time. So there is a possibility that it is a meaty role. But the promotions do not emphasize that (so far). He is there in the trailer, but not in any of the songs. No sure if he will go out on the regular promotional interview spree before release (like he did extensively for TZP), it will most likely be low-key.

On the contrary, the promotion of Dear Zindagi revolved around SRK quite a bit. He was there in all the mini trails and promos, and the promotion revolved around the psychological dialogues from him. Even then the film opened to just 8-9 cr range on day one. And here they are keeping Aamir’s role in the back-burner. If it is an insignificant cameo like Akshay’s in Naam Shabana, then even 100 cr is a distant possibility here.

The actor is now all set to introduce the third hidden talent, Tirth Sharma who is playing the role of Insia’s close friend, Chintan.

Secret Superstar has been shot in Baroda and the interesting fact being Baroda also happens to be Tirth aka Chintan’s hometown.

“But when I was working with Aamir Sir on “Satyamev Jayate”, there was a woman called Shanno in one episode whose daughter told her, “I will work as a maid so that you can go and learn driving and earn a living.” Shanno became a driver and that is how she now takes care of her family. That is when I realised that my idea of a hero was really narrow. Shanno’s daughter is the real hero here. The definition of a hero for me and what I was writing about, it totally changed at that moment.”

  61. First hummable song, IMO. And quite a good slice of life picturisation as well.

That being said, all these 100cr expectations are ridiculous. If this one crosses 50-60cr, it will be an achievement. My 2 cents.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, 60 cr would have been an achievement for this film IF Aamir was not acting and producing it. Movies like Neerja, Hindi Medium, Kapoor & Sons, Pink, etc are all considered BO achievers with 60-70 cr. These are indeed small films without the backing of any big stars and did well considering their budgets and ROI.

DZ on the other hand is considered an average fare after doing 65 cr. It was a niche concept but had the backing of SRK as actor-producer. As a result, it opened in 30+ cr range. But it did not trend well and ended after just doubling the weekend score. And it is considered a BO disappointment of sorts.

Same goes for SS. It is releasing on diwali weekend (DZ had a normal weekend). Due to Aamir factor it will minimally do 35-40 cr over the 4-day weekend. The trending will depend on how the movie turns out to be. If it does 50-60 cr from there, it will have trended like DG and will be a disappointment (although economically it will still make money). If it is accepted to the extent DZ was, it will do 70-80 cr. If it is really liked, it should be able to triple its weekend and do 105-120 cr (which is the best case scenario).

I also expect Golmaal Again to do 125-140 cr, with heavily front-loaded collections over the diwali weekend. It will be a miracle if SS can beat that (which wont happen IMO).

Two of India’s most rare personalities Aamir Khan and Virat Kohli came together for a Diwali special chat show today. The Dangal star had specially flown from Singapore to shoot this special chat show, with Virat Kohli a first for the duo.

Both the luminaries had a gala time with each other while shooting for the festive special episode. Aamir Khan gifted as a memento to Virat Kohli, Dangals clapboard. It is a lesser known fact Aamir has a passion for collecting clapboards from his films.

Virat Kohli also gifted Aamir a jersey of Indian cricket team. Accompanying Aamir, he had his son Azad Khan who happens to be a fan of Virat Kohli.

Azad was elated after meeting Virat and his happiness knew no bounds after Virat gifted him an autographed bat.

The special chat show will be aired on television during the Diwali week. The special show serves as a promotional countdown with the release of Secret Superstar.

And releasing alongside Golmaal wont be too easy as that movie is bound to take a big opening…People want entertainment and like Judwaa, Golmaal offers them that kind of entertainment. I am expecting SS to open between 5 to 10 crs, assuming this is a medium sized release of 1500 screens.. From there on it can obviously grow well and reach big numbers but to get to 100 crs in 5 days will be most likely done by G4 and not SS. We will get an idea once we know the size of release, but right now honestly purely from a buzz perspective the movie is lagging behind…

Aamir I read many times, just wanted to be the most loved star and his run post Lagaan has achieved that. He’s totally the most driven star today; I’d be surprised if many past stars were so singularly determined, as in so concerned to get the film as right as possible.

The frequency debate shall come forth soon. Will challenge it when it arrives.

He has earned the trust and goodwill of his audience by churning out much better films than his contemporaries. People look forward to watching good films when Aamir is in it, and not just be charmed by a star in a crappy film. I am not sure about the past, but in our age Aamir is unique in this way.

As for working style, every other star works with his brain and heart, irrespective of the success or failure of any film. One can argue that Aamir is more intelligent or has higher emotional quotient than his contemporaries. But I think his advantage is that he is interested and involved in the film-making process to an extent that other stars dont even dream about. He is a star with film-making acumen and passionately understands film as a medium. Things had really fallen in place for him since Lagaan, and the results have followed.

I am sure they will have more screens on Day 1 and then AKP probably hopes some of them stick with SS based on WOM. Not sure if this can be a possible scenario at all for week 1.

        • No Krish. Your sources are just wrong here. I have been following this movie for a long time now, since it has been in the making. The budget here is just 15 cr ever since it went on floors. AKP films are v economically made, specially if they are small films. DG had a budget of just 6 cr, while Peepli Live was made at 10 cr. Delhi Belly which had Imran was made at 20-25 cr. I wont be surprised if the budget for SS has increased to 20 cr for the dealyed release, as Forbes is reporting. But that figure may also include the P&A costs. Dear Zindagi was also made at 20-25 cr and it had Aliya as a star and an established director at helm. For SS you have a debut director, a cast of all newcomers (except Aamir) and low production values. Do you really think SS is made at double the budget of DZ? It is a no brainer.

Also the print count is not going to be just 1000 as your sources say. Its going to be double that and it will just not be for opening day, but will hold it for the entire week and perhaps more. Your sources are not in the know here.

          Like

        • And I will say this. Your sources are perhaps adding Aamir’s acting fees to the budget figure. But I doubt if Aamir has charged 20-25 cr upfront for this movie, when he himself is the producer. He does not work like that, and takes a share of the profit specially in his own productions. Zee studios, who is the co-producer, is distributing this film themselves. So the profits are going to be big as far as ROI is concerned, and Aamir will definitely get a large share of the pie.

But I agree that IF SS does not even do 50 cr nett in India, it will be an outright disappointment and will be a flop. It will a Hit at 70-75 cr and a Superhit at 100 cr. If it can get near to 150 cr it with be a Blockbuster.

I would think KRK would have got the information from some trustworthy person considering it is up in his site.
Either ways lets wait and see…
But 2000 screens sounds way too much to me specially when Golmaal is releasing alongside. Who will give screens to SS visavis a Golmaal specially when it is clear it is a WOM movie?

G4 is the bigger film here IMO….Not sure what was the split for Raees/Kaabil….If SS is taking 2500 screens in a clash then G4 is left with nothing…and Day 1 crowd will go for G4 IMO

Also, they are claiming SS will only work in metro multiplexes and do 75 cr if good. Good to see their brains at work here!

SS is well positioned now to put DZ to shame (both qualitatively and at BO), so these kind of absurd articles are fun to read.

And lets SUPPOSE that SS fails at BO. It opens at 5 cr and fizzles out. BUT if it works, how can it work only in ‘metro multiplexes’ when it is about a ‘small town’ girl and revolves around an universal theme of chasing dreams? Difficult to understand such logic.

I somehow feel people here are underestimating the combination of Diwali and Golmaal.
75 crs is quite good for the movie assuming Aamir is in a supporting role…If it is as liked as TZP then 100cr +…I dont see anything wrong here in BOIs claims purely from a trade perspective.
I know people are expecting this to cross 200 crs but for that to happen G4 has to be really really bad….And the last three golmaal movies all have got an audience..I wont go to the prediction of worldwide 1000 crs as that is based on one country taking to the movie – china…

      Like

      • Even if SS is very good and G4 is also good, G4 will restrict the gross of SS due to screen count. So the only way for SS to get to 200 crs would be G4 has be pathetic and it loses its screens

        Like

      • SS is opening solo on Diwali day, so no clash there. I will be surprised it it does not do 10+ cr on 19th, as I have been saying for long. We discussed this during JHMS release that movies like CDI and TZP which did 60 cr ten years back in 2007 would have done 200+ cr in today’s market. That still holds true. JHMS was also expected to do 200 cr if it was liked by its target audience, but we know what happened.

If SS is liked as much as TZP, then it will trend like that too (6X multiplier of first 3 days) and should get to 200 cr. But chances of that happening is v low IMO.

What BOI says does not automatically become ‘trade perspective’. If you talk to real trade guys, who are investing money on these films, then they are expecting around 90 cr from SS and 140 cr from G4 (IF these movies click with the audience).

        Like

        • Exactly, 90 crs is the range people are expecting and 140 crs for G4…Thats pretty much spot on…..
.BOI is saying over 75 crs a..So not too different..
It surely can do more on Day 1 but Day 1 is also pooja day if i understand so there will be some curtailment. Usually mass movies were opening in the 14 cr range on Day 1….So yes 10 cr would be the aim for SS….But i wont be surprised if it is lesser too…
20th the crowds will be in overflow but it will be a problem for SS if it is losing screens from Day 1 due to the clash..We will know those things closer to release I guess..
For SS to get to 200 crs like TZP with a clash will be difficult…We were expecting CDI and TZP to get to 200 thats true but not with a clash…But yes Aamir has done the impossible over the years so never say never….

          Like

        • TZP did 60 cr with a clash. It clashed with Welcome on Christmas and still did that much. When the genres are so different, then a clash does not matter. During festivities there is enough space for 2 films that are so diverse from each other.

We also tend to forget how TZP got to that 60+ cr total. It did less than 10 cr in first 3 days. What it achieved was based on superb trending over weeks. It did not have much to do about screen counts. It was a wom film.

And those 2000+ screens on which SS is going to release is not booked for one day, it does not work that way. The bookings are at least for a week. As I said, G4 will still get 3000+ screens and will have to be satisfied with that.

  102. News is that Zee Studios (co-producers and distributor) have sold distribution rights to leading sub-distributors in all Indian territories on a commission basis. So it does not have any burden of recovering any particular ‘distribution price’.

It is definitely going to be a 2000+ screen release and the total production cost plus P&A is no more than 25 cr.

  103. SRK was virtually in most promos for DZ if I recall so unless you’re on blogs like this or in the know you expect a longer role. In that sense I’d expect SS opening to be <10 CR with competition. The total can literally be anything between 40-150 CR as it's massively relying on WOM. If Judwaa 2 has done well, G4 is going to be huge competition.

But it's the Welcome / TZP model here overall. I expect both to do well. G4 to outgross by a margin. The day early start for SS is a feast or famine result. If the film doesn't work it's gone, if it hits the mark it can hurt G4.

    • Pretty much what i am also saying….and probably put in better words

    • I think the interest to watch SRK in a longish role (yes SRK featured a lot more in DZ promo material than Aamir has in SS) is perhaps quite less than catching an Aamir film in theaters (even IF Aamir has a shorter role as per promos). That is purely the advantage of the trust in Aamir brand that the audience has.

Of course, the film may open <10 cr and this hypothesis can go for a toss. But as of now I am sticking to it.

  104. Aamir Khan Was Scared To Lose Stardom While Doing Dangal
“But the story of the film couldn’t leave my mind. So, I decided that I should do it and not get afraid of anything,” he added.

    By Koimoi.com Team -October 12, 2017

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan says he was scared of losing out his fan-following when he was offered the role of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in Dangal as he had to play an old and fat man.

“I do get scared (of losing stardom). When I heard the story of Dangal, I thought I have to do this film. But then I thought that I have just done Dhoom 3 and PK, and have six-packs and star-image. If I will do this film (‘Dangal‘), then I will become old and fat. What my fans will think? I hope I don’t lose my fan-following,” Aamir said here on Wednesday while promoting new film Secret Superstar.

“Mahavir is a 55-year-old in the film. I am 52. So, there is less difference between us. We are too close. But fans don’t know that as they see me as 30-year-old. So, I told the director that I liked the film and I will do it after 10 years when I will be old. They agreed to that too.

“But the story of the film couldn’t leave my mind. So, I decided that I should do it and not get afraid of anything,” he added.

Dangal, which released in 2016, went on the break various records at the box office worldwide.

Aamir says being a producer himself, he likes his films to be “economically viable”.

“I feel that through the films I am working in the person, who is investing his money, should at least get 10-15 percent profit. But, I don’t look at the box office. If I will take a film thinking how much collections it will make, then I wouldn’t have made ‘Taare Zameen Par‘ or ‘Secret Superstar‘,” he said.

Directed by Advait Chandan, Secret Superstar is based on the life of a teenage girl named Insia, played by Zaira Wasim, who sets out to follow her dream of being a singing superstar under the confinement of anonymity.

Chandan said that the film is not based on any real-life incident.

“All the characters in this film are original and not based on anybody, but they are inspired from people. The people I met during ‘Satyamev Jayate’ are the ones this film inspired from,” he said.

    • @Idea – TZP did around 62.5 cr in 500 screens back in 2007. It did not do 75 cr. Welcome did 70 cr.

Will SS take a bigger opening weekend than TZP? That remains to be seen. The 9-10 cr weekend of TZP will amount to 35-40 cr over first 3 days in today’s market. That I think is the expectation from SS also. I doubt if it will do much more than that even if the movie turns out to be good. Specially with competition from G4, which is expected to do over 20 cr on each day over the weekend.

It will all depend on WOM and trending for SS. As I said before, if it trends exceptionally like TZP it will get to 200 cr. But under normal circumstances, with good wom and trending, it will cross 100 cr milestone.

  107. Making it more direct, we ask if Zaira Wasim – riding high on Dangal’s success and Secret Superstar’s protagonist – was paid more than him. Aamir’s role is smaller than Zaira’s in the film. “No. I would not have a smaller paycheque because I don’t take money upfront. For my last 10 films, I haven’t charged a fee, I take a percentage of profit. That is assuming the film will do well. Fortunately my films did well, but if it doesn’t work, I am the guy who takes the hit. I follow the oldest method of asking for money in performing arts. After you perform, take off your hat and ask for money, if you liked my work you will give money otherwise you will just leave.”

He further explained the economics of payment to artists as a producer: “In films, there are two kinds of levels of payment – one is for the work that you are doing. Now the work that I do is equal to any other actor and the length of the role is not important. I believe all people of the creative team should be paid equally and perhaps writer and director are the only ones who should be paid higher.”

“Now in this team, there are perhaps two of us who will be able to pull people in which the others are not able to, irrespective of whether I am a man or a woman. That is something unique that I am adding to the film and that is what we describe as stardom. That can be Salim-Javed or AR Rahman, anybody who has the ability to fill seats gets a bigger payment. The day she (Zaira) is able to pull more seats than me, I would be happy to give her a bigger pay cheque, In fact, as a producer I would want her to. As a producer, I don’t care if you are a man or a woman. You could be an animal, but if you can pull people in, I would want you get a bigger paycheque.”

Aamir then went on to elaborate on why women still get a much lower payment than their male counterparts. “Unfortunately, most of the stars in our country are males. That is also a result of our patriarchal society. Even as kids, we are told stories where gender roles are predefined. Adventure stories are always about boys who have leadership qualities and are the saviours. We are brought up to see males as heroes. We start planting these thoughts in our heads since childhood.”

He, however, is hopeful of change. “ There has to be a paradigm shift in that. I am someone who strongly believes in equality whether you are man or a woman. But ultimately in the economics of cinema anyone who pulls people in will be paid higher. There is no question about it,” he said.

  108. Ultimately the final collections will make or break the verdict going in or against their favour not the first day or weekend alone and movie with the better content and better word of mouth will have longer legs at the cinemas. Also SS will have an added advantage of releasing 1 day prior to Golmaal 4 which might tilt the benefit in favour of SS only if turns out to be an excellent movie, otherwise this move can boomerang if it turns out to be an average affair. I hope to watch an engaging and entertaining film as this one is produced by Aamir Khan production.
