  1. Jeeves:

    This is a surprise

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety Opens Very Well

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety has taken a strong start with collections in the 30-35% region. If we take morning occupancy then the film is actually the second best opening of 2018 after Padmaavat as occupancy is better than Pad Man though obviously its a lesser release.

The film was always looking to open well in Delhi / NCR / Punjab belt the content holds appeal for tha area and the songs which have done well had a very North flavour but the film has managed to open well in most of the major cities across India. The film will still out perform in the North and if the merits are there then it will mean a sustained run in Delhi / Punjab multiplexes which will mean a good long run.

The other release Welcome To New York had a poor opening though Punjab will be better due to the presence of Diljit Dosanjh. But the film is a spoof film and these have a limited market especially in North. On top the film is a comedy on the film industry which has scope in Mumbai as things about the industry are more widely known there but the rest of the country is generally unaware about filmy jokes. There are very few films which have worked that are based on the film industry.

    Mumbai (45 Cinemas)

    Aiyaary – 2,011 admits

Sonu Ke Titi Ki Sweety – 2834 admits

    Delhi (25 cinemas)

    Aiyaary – 1,087 admits

Sonu Ke Titi Ki Sweety – 1912 admits

    Chandigarh (8 Cinemas)

    Aiyaary – 377 admits

Sonu Ke Titi Ki Sweety – 756 admits

    Jaipur (10 cinemas)

    Aiyaary – 379 admits

Sonu Ke Titi Ki Sweety – 613 admits

    TOTAL (88 cnemas)

    Aiyaary – 3,854 admits

Sonu Ke Titi Ki Sweety – 6115 admits

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety is far ahead of last weeks Aiyaary despite being a smaller film and a weaker cast but the entertainment factor in the trailer and music makes the big difference. It has opened 60% plus better than Aiyaary and it has the potential to grow better than Aiyaary over the first day.

  2. Welcome To New York Movie Review: Sonakshi Sinha And Diljit Dosanjh’s Film Is A Mindless Yet Harmless Comedy

    2/5

Bollywood sheds its inhibitions and takes broad swipes at itself in Welcome To New York, a mindless yet harmless comedy built upon incidents that take place in and around a glitzy awards show held in the Big Apple. Truth be told, parts of the film are fun. If only all of it was equally so, this piece of unpretentious whimsy might have been a far breezier ride. But it is a big, imposing IF that stares us in the face as the film unfolds at a jaunty pace.

  4. Did Rajini call Aamir to postpone TOH?

The makers want to release ‘2.0’ during Diwali, so they tried to discuss things with Aamir Khan as his movie ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ is scheduled to release on the same day. However, Aamir said a resounding no when they first approached him. The actor feels Diwali is the perfect time to release ‘Thugs’ and hence, he is holding on to the date.”

But the source further clarified that Rajini intervened, saying, “After Rajinikanth made a call, the talks have resumed and both Lyca and Aamir along with Yash Raj Films are figuring if something can be done.”

It is very unlikely to release this year. These rumors about clash and Diwali release is PR machinery trying to keep it in news. But the project is already looking very stale due to all the delay. It wont release before Republic Day 2019 for sure.

        Like

        • Aamir has long back announced Diwali 2018 as his release time for TOH. Why should he move? The 2.0 producers have some gall, pushing their way into another major film’s release date, after continuously shifting their release from last Diwali, to early this year, to early summer and now Diwali again. What they are doing is unethical — but film production houses and attached stars are least bothered about ethical play, I guess.

Aamir’s films work because of their intrinsic strengths, not because of a festival. He does not need a Christmas all the time. His RDB released on Jan 26, 2006, Fanaa in early May 2006. But festival holiday mood does help, for all releases.

Aamir could if necessary advance the release of TOH by a week or two, releasing the film ahead of Diwali. This way the media and rival fans can be outwittted out of their nasty games. I can foresee what will be written on media sites and blogs, in case the Diwali clash happens. On Twitter especially, the bhakt- trolls will be ready asking good Hindus to support Hindu stars, in other words ( 2.0) against the other film with its two minority actors.

It’s sad the amount of pettiness and insecurity on display in social media.

Salman Khan: Can’t Afford The Luxury Of Being Depressed

Salman Khan said: “I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional”

Salman says he’s busy and cannot take vacations and breaks like others

No matter what I am going through, it works against me: Salman
Salman has Race 3, Bharat and Dabangg 3 in the pipeline
Salman Khan is a busy man and he likes to keep it like this. At the TiE Global Summit on Thursday, the 52-year-old actor said he hasn’t taken a break ever since he started working, reports news agency IANS. “I see a lot of people going on vacations, but I cannot afford that luxury of taking a vacation. I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me,” he told IANS. Salman Khan was last seen in Tiger Zinda Hai, which released in December 2017 and he is currently filming Race 3. Salman is also producing his brother-in-law Aayush Sharma’s debut film Loveratri and he has also signed up for Bharat. So yes, Salman Khan is a busy man.

Of his days before joining Bollywood, Salman Khan said: “When I was 15 or 16-year-old, I started partying and stuff like that because that’s the age when everyone parties. When I was in college, I used to assist in films and then I started working as a model too. Mr Kailash Surendranath (advertising filmmaker) made me face the camera for the first time… One day, he kept his arm around me and said ‘Salman, I don’t think you should waste your time by spending your father’s money’. Though he said that jokingly, I didn’t take that as a joke. Straight after that, I started working and till today, I don’t take holidays.”

Salman Khan debuted in Biwi Ho To Aisi, co-starring Rekha and Farooq Sheikh but is breakthrough film was Maine Pyar Kiya opposite Bhagyashree.

“My profession is such that I have to look good, dress up well, do stylised action sequences and romance. My articles come on affairs, me working with beautiful heroines and then suddenly a court date comes up… people see me on Bigg Boss in which I am laughing and joking,” Salman Khan told IANS.

“So, people think that he doesn’t give a damn about things. That is the most difficult part about our journey as actors. No matter what you are going through at your home or your personal life, you can’t have sub-titles there. You have to be that character, no matter what you are going through, you have to forget that and you have to focus on your craft,” he said.

  13. It’s never good news if big movies like these clash. They will only end up harming each others’ prospects. From potential 400cr grossers they may have to settle for 200cr.

I don’t think Aamir will be calling the shots regarding the release date on his own. It’s not his production. YRF are one of the biggest banners around. It’s their money and the final decision will be theirs. Aamir may have a say but he is hardly the major stakeholder here.

I do think regarding the actors, the film is more important for Aamir than for anyone else. A clash affects him more. Bachan is surely on a supporting role here. It’s maybe a Jackie Shroff/D3 kind of deal for him. It’s not as if he is going to be relying on this to get new films. He exists by deals like Pink and Pikku these days. These films continue to make him still extremely relevant.

Akshay Kumar is not going to be over-reliant on 2.0 as well. He has the required volume to cope if it’s a disaster. He will probably have 1-2 films lined up before its release. And 2-3 other releases over a few months post 2-0’s release. If he is Uday Chopra in 2.0, it probably signifies that the film hardly means anything for him when he is the main lead of Gold, Kesari or H4 and they are all going to come quick and fast.

Rajni and Shankar, sure have a lot to gain and lose with 2.0. They have devoted years into the film. Same for Aamir with TOH. He has devoted over 2 years of his career on the film.

A clash hurts him and Rajni most of all, as lead actors who have devoted so much time and effort into the movies. In a scenario where let’s say 2.0 makes 250cr and TOH makes 300cr, both movies can be viewed as under-performers when you take into account the expectations, investments, time devoted to the projects.

I hope a lash is averted.

Amitabh’s role will most def NOT resemble anything close to the 2 sec appearance by Jackie in D3. As for Aamir calling the shots, well yes he will call the shots. Just like Salman called the shots for TZH and SRK called the shots for FAN. Whenever these guys are part of a project, they call the shots NO MATTER the production house. Now Aamir can deflect the decision to Adi but he will still have a major say in it.

  14. For a film to be declared a hit or blockbuster, stakeholders must recover their investments. That includes pan-Indian distributors, cinema halls owners etc.. TOH’s fate cannot be based on China alone. If it under-performs in India, there are people who are going to lose money out there. It’s a fact that SS and Dangal distributors in China probably made more money than even AKP.

Sure, if TOH make $200m in China and there is a 25% share deal in there for YRF, they earn a lot of money from there alone. But, if it under-performs in India, there are people who lose money there and it isn’t a universal blockbuster anymore. Suddenly, you are in MANK territory. And the distributors in China end up making more money than the producers.

I seriously doubt if TOH will underperform in India. Not sure if it will ‘over perform’ either. MNIK made 70 CR in India and it’s outside business was not out of this world great. TOH will not be another MNIK..this much I can guarantee!!

    • Agree completely but should be consistent. This clash won’t be as harming as TOH clashing with Dwarf for example. 2.0’s business is mostly South and TOH opposite. How much they overlap will be less than 2 bollywood films clashing. The only major problem is it is the 2 biggest films of the year clashing. But I doubt this clash happens. 2.0 is constantly changing dates so any announcements mean little at this stage.

      Like

      • Would be a bit unethical from the part of 2.0 producers if they release it on Diwali 2018. TOH has been announced for that date since more than a year now. They would only end up harming both films prospects. Maybe they should learn from Baahubali 2. It didn’t need any holiday to make a mark. It transcended dates, stardom, cultural, linguistic barriers and territorial divides.

        Liked by 1 person

        • It’s unprofessional, especially as they’ve missed dates already. The more producers don’t rely on holidays the better. There are plenty of examples. I can’t remember if YJHD or Ready had holidays, Bahubali 2 certainly didn’t. But it shows a lack of confidence in your film. Obviously holidays provide a boost but they are not the most important factor in openings and total collections.

I would prefer 2 clear weeks (which is always possible) than a major holiday with competition in that week or subsequent week. Without any holiday a big film can clear 100 CR in 3 days easily now. The festive release only works hugely for a fantastic film or a dud. The former can work any time, the latter needs the holiday to save it.

    • YRF is way bigger and no chance theatres will pick 2.0 over TOH unless in South. This is a stupid move by 2.0, who would clash with the biggest film out there. If it happens it will be fun IMO, TOH will thump 2.0 in Bollywood and 2.0 likewise in South. But TOH isn’t banking on being a linguistic barrier breaker like Bahubali 2 turned out to be. 2.0 is pitching itself as the first North/South film post Bahubali 2 but would suffer massively. Not a chance the Bollywood crowd will watch 2.0 over TOH.

And I wouldn’t relegate Bachchan’s role here too much – TOH is going to play on this clash of generations just like Mohabbatein and K3G. Bachchan makes this film more important than it would otherwise be. He’s still Bollywood’s biggest ever name, even if he’s not a force now. Otherwise it’s Aamir, Katrina, Jackie & Fatima in a YRF film directed by Victor which sounds on paper like a horrible Dhoom 3 remake.

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety has done very well on day one with collections set to come in 6.75-7 crore nett. The number is more than double of Aiyaary though a little less than Fukrey Returns which released a few months back and was a film of a similar genre. That film opened in the 8 crore nett range probably because that film had a little more for the masses.

But this film could show better growth on Sunday than Fukrey Returns as it has a family angle to it and if this works with the family audience on Sunday, the film could go anywhere. The film has scored heavily in North with Delhi NCR and East Punjab recording excellent numbers which are actually similar to Pad Man figures.

The other circuits have also done well and are sure to pick up further tomorrow as evening shows improved well today. The film has also affected all the other films being screened, even a well established Padmaavat.

His orchestrated dance moves and multiple costume changes in heavily embroidered kurtas and sherwanis make him look more like an actor on a movie set or a guest at a wedding than a politician who is here to talk business. Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety grossed a very good 6.25-6.50 crore nett on day one with business being excellent in Delhi NCR and East Punjab. This area was always set to do open well but the good opening in other belts is what has pushed the film to a very solid opening day number.

The other release of the week Welcome To New York was a poor fare as it grossed 75 lakhs nett but with a spoof film there is always a chance it can be a big let down at the box office. This film will also grow on Saturday but considering the budget which is more than Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety it cant really go anywhere. The collections in Punjab were also very low due to the spoof content of the film as Mumbai might have a chance with this sort of stuff but North will reject outright.

  27. Padmaavat Aiyaary Black Panther Update
    Saturday 24 February 2018 14.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Padmaavat grossed a good 70-75 lakhs nett apprx on its fifth Friday which toot its total to over 270 crore nett. The growth should be huge on Saturday as has been the case every Saturday though Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety may play spoil sport a little but to counteract the collections are at low levels so 70-80% should not be hard.

There are reports that it may get a release in Gujarat over the weekend and this would give it another kick start though nothing like if it had released in Gujarat in week one. There have been reports of a Gujarat release before as well but nothing really happened so remains to be seen does it actually get screened.

The lifetime total of the film looks to be heading for around 277-278 crore nett if no Gujarat or Rajasthan release till the end of its run.

The collections of Padmaavat till date are as follows

    First Week – 1,59,47,00,000

    Second Week – 66,93,00,000

    Third Week – 30,09,00,000

    Fourth Week – 13,25,00,000 apprx

Fifth Week – 75,00,000 apprx (Friday)

    TOTAL – 2,70,49,00,000 apprx

The hold over from last week Aiyaary crashed with around 20 lakhs nett business on day eight taking its eight day total to 16.50 crore nett. The film will close on around 18 crore nett on a best case scenario

Black Panther had a fair hold dropping around 70% from its first day as it collected around 1.50-160 crore nett on day eight. The collections so far are around 32.50 crore nett and the film is a decent success in India though not the runaway hit that it is in the westerrn markets.

    Sunday 25 February 2018 01.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety is set to emerge a HIT film as it shows huge growth on Saturday after a very good start. on Friday. The growth is looking to be around 50% which means that the second day collections for the film will be around 9.25-9.50 crore nett. The two day trend is fantastic but you have to wait for Monday to confirm a HIT film.

The two day collections will be 15.50 crore nett and the film will cruise past the 25 crore nett for the weekend. Normally good growth would be expected Sunday as well due to the family angle bit such huge growth on Saturday it is possible that some of the Sunday growth is also baked into the Saturday number.

The film was a little less in Mumbai circuit on Friday especially in Gujarat but Mumbai circuit has shown the best growth on Sunday, far more than Delhi / UP. North is still tops for overall performance and Delhi NCR and East Punjab look set for a big run.

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety And Padmaavat Update
    Sunday 25 February 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety showed excellent growth of 45% on Saturday as it grossed 9 crore nett apprx taking its two day total to 15.25 crore nett. The film showed growth of 60-70% in some theaters of Mumbai and Pune as day one was a little less than other parts of the country but collections jumped more than other parts.

The film is on course to be a HIT film and that should be confirmed with the Monday numbers. The film chances of hitting double digits on Sunday which is huge for this type of film. A good comparison with this film is Fukrey Again which had better collections over the first two days but also had Tiger Zinda Hai in the way. Though this comparison will hold will Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety comes through on Monday

The collections of Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety are as follows.

    Friday – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 9,00,00,000 apprx

    Total – 15,25,00,000 apprx

The other release Welcome To New York showed no growth with collections still in that 75 lakhs nett range to take its two day total to 1.50 crore. Sunday is unlikely to do much better.

Padmaavat is trying to be released in Gujarat with limited success so far as exhibitors still wary. The film almost double its collections on Saturday.

Friday was around 75 lakhs nett and Saturday was around 1.40 crore nett which gives the film a total of 272 crore nett apprx till its fifth Saturday.

For the longest time, the industry grapevine was buzzing with the rumour that Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be back together on the big screen for a film which will be produced by Shaailesh R Singh. And it is indeed true! The golden couple of the industry will make their on-screen comeback. As soon as the confirmation talk began, speculation was rife about the film going through obstacles due to its leading lady, the Bachchan Bahu. But, like many rumours in this industry, these have turned out to be untrue. As producer Shaailesh R Singh clarifies, “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is one of the most professional actors in the industry that I have worked with and I am looking forward to working with her.” The filmmaker adds, “You will hear an official announcement soon. My entire team and I are looking forward to working with both Aishwarya and Abhishek.”

Let’s see if 2.0 does indeed release along with TOH— who certainly have first claim on Diwali 2018 release. It would be a tragedy if both the big films release the same day. Unfair to TOH, definitely. Aamir makes his one biannual film and announces his date. He needs to stick to it — or at best advance it by a week or two. He need not shift to Christmas 2018.

Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety has done excellent business over the weekend collecting 26 crore nett. The growth on Saturday was a huge 45% and if followed up with another 20% on Sunday which again is very good considering Saturday had gone up so much.

The film has collected very well and trended very well over the weekend and now its about the crucial Monday. The film is going to hold going by the weekend collections but how well is the question. The fact that it had picked up by Sunday all over even where it started a little lower gives confidence that Monday will hold. The hold levels remained to be seen. The best business was Delhi NCR and East Punjab but that was expected.

Padmaavat had another solid weekend with business close to 4 crore nett which takes its lifetime total to 273.50 crore nett. The film has now broken records of all Hindi films except Bahubali – The Conclusion in most centers of Maharashtra and Nizam / Andhra. The fair value of Mumbai circuit is 110 crore nett while likes of Tiger Zinda Hai, Dangal and PK all did under 105 crore nett. Bahubali – The Conclusion was at another level with 185 crore nett plus .

The makers tried to get the film to be screened in Gujarat but it did not happen and now it is probably getting too late as another weekend has gone. The lifetime total of the film looks to be heading for around 278 and 280 crore nett on a best case scenario.

The collections of Padmaavat till date are as follows

Aiyaary was very poor as it grossed 75-80 lakhs nett to take its ten day total to 17 crore nett. The film will fold at around 17.50-17.75 crre nett.

Padman grossed around 2-2.25 crore nett to take its total to nearly 78 crore nett in 17 days and this film will close at around 80-81 crore nett.

LOS ANGELES — If it keeps this up, “Black Panther” could be the newest member of moviedom’s $1 billion club.

Having had a week to absorb its record-setting arrival, Hollywood is now sizing up the staying power of Marvel’s latest superhero movie. In its second weekend, “Black Panther” demonstrated an astounding hold on audiences in the United States and Canada, collecting about $108 million and pushing its global total after only 12 days of release to roughly $704 million, according to comScore.

    • Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther continued its box office domination this weekend, becoming only the fourth film to ever deliver over $100 million in its second weekend as well as joining Jurassic World as the second fastest film to top $400 million domestically. Meanwhile, the weekend’s new wide releases finished mostly as expected with WB’s release of New Line’s Game Night leading the way with a second place finish while Paramount’s Annihilation landed in fourth and Orion’s Every Day finished within the top ten.

With an estimated $108 million, Black Panther delivered the second largest second weekend of all-time, improving on Jurassic World’s $106.5 million second weekend back in June 2015. Black Panther’s domestic gross now stands at $400 million, which places it alongside Jurassic World as the second fastest film to top $400 million domestically. However, given the way Black Panther has been outperforming estimates since release, don’t be surprised to see these domestic numbers climb once actuals come in on Monday afternoon.

So far, Black Panther is already the fifth highest grossing title domestically in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will shortly pass both Captain America: Civil War ($408m) and Iron Man 3 ($409m). The film is also now one of the top 30 domestic releases of all-time after just ten days of release.

  46. Hrithik, Deepika & Ranveer Excelled In A Genre In Which The 3 Khans Failed Miserably

In the last 20 years, several actors tried their luck at period films, but the only one to succeed were Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat which released during the Republic Day weekend amidst the controversy surprised one and all with its box-office performance. Despite starting slowly at the box-office, the film went on to collect more than 280 crores, thereby emerging the first successful film of 2018.

The protests aside, the film was praised by audience and critics alike mainly for the fierce performance of Ranveer Singh and the artistic depiction of Jauhar sequence in the climax. Period films in Bollywood have seldom found success at the box office, however the tables are slowly taking a turn whereby the audience are getting fascinated by the epic historic tales. In the last 20 years, several actors tried their luck at period films, but the only one to succeed were Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

While Shah Rukh Khan was warrior Asoka in Santosh Sivan’s directorial, Aamir Khan essayed the character of freedom fighter, Mangal Pandey in YRF’s much spoken about film, The Rising. On the other hand, Salman Khan too ventured into the historical genre with Veer, which narrated the tale of Pindari’s. Here is a look at how the historic films have failed at the Box-Office since 2000:

    Asoka:
Asoka was made on a budget of 12.50 crore, thereby being the costliest film of 2001. Despite everything going in its favour prior to its release, the Shah Rukh Khan film wasn’t quite able to win over the audiences. The movie 11.60 crore at the box office and was termed a flop. Asoka was an ambitious film for Shah Rukh Khan, and the superstar in a recent interview revealed that he would like to remake Asoka and rectify the mistakes made back then.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh:Ajay Devgn and Rajkumar Santoshi teamed up to narrate the story of legendary Indian freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh. Although the film made Ajay Devgn win a National Award, it didn’t do well at the box office. The major reason for the failure was the crumpled release as several films made on the life of Bhagat Singh released during the same period. Mounted on a budget of 20 crore, the film could barely earn 8 crore at the box office.

Mangal Pandey:Aamir Khan and YRF teaming up for the biopic of Indian soldier, Mangal Pandey had got the audience excited. The film marked a comeback of Aamir Khan after a 4-year long break, which just added onto the hype. However, all that glitters is not gold and Mangal Pandey justified the axiom. After the bumper opening at the box office, the film was criticised for its slow narration and flopped at the box office. Made on a budget of 37 crore (approx.), the movie raked in 28 crore at the box office in India.

Jodhaa Akhbar:Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa Akhbar marked the reunion of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai after the success of Dhoom 2. Expectedly so, the film attracted controversy from some fringe groups, however the critical acclaim as well as positive word of mouth helped it succeed at the box office. Although the film was not a humongous hit, the producers recovered their money and made reasonable profits. Made on a budget of 55 crore, the film raked in 62.80 crore in India. Hrithik Roshan won a lot of acclaim for his nuanced performance and the film won him several awards.

Akshay may go into the successful star bracket in periodic genre with Kesari and Housefull 4.

Aamir too has TOH which can redeem him.

Salman needs to do one soon.

      Like

      • Nothing to redeem, Lagaan was a hit period film. Mangal Pandey was a recovery film for both distributors and producers. And it was a much better film than Baahubali or Veer.

TOH is again a period film, and should do well.

Expectation from ToH is at-least 300 Crore.

Located in Dhannur Building in the Borabazar precinct, the original Strand Book Stall is the last one standing. “We have had to shut six Strand stores in Bangalore (three), Mysore, Hyderabad and Pune over the last five years. The availability of books online has killed us,” Ms. Virkar says. Strand had managed to expand by opening stores on several Infosys campuses at the invitation of Sudha and Narayan Murthy. “The stores on the Infosys campuses did exceedingly well till Flipkart came by. The techies would come see a book, then look at Flipkart and place an order right in front of our salesman. We had to start closing down.”

Strand began in 1948 as a two-shelf book store in the lounge of the then-glamorous Strand Cinema in Colaba, when Mr. Shanbhag decided to open his own store after an officious salesperson made him feel unwelcome at a bookshop he would frequent. “The idea was to have a store where customers wouldn’t be turned away for browsing, and books were affordable. The Strand Cinema manager had been so taken by Mr. Shanbhag that he had the shelves put up himself,” Ms. Virkar recalls. “My father ended up making a neat ₹450 on his first consignment.”

Padmaavat has grossed 525 crore worldwide till end of business on its fifth Monday and stands as the seventh highest Hindi film grosser Worldwide and is likely fo finish in this position. The film has a GROSS of 350 cr in India (274.25 crore nett) and 176 crore in overseas ($27.5 million)

The film is very close to the US / Canada record of Dangal at $11.95 million with Dangal at $12.39 million but it may not have the legs to reach Dangal but that film was an Xmas release which adds a lot to a film in US / Canada. The Overseas letdown is Gulf because if this had performed then it would become the highest Overseas grosser in Hindi. Now it may have to settle for either 2nd 3rd or 4th position with Dangal remaining number one.

The first week collections of the film will probably be around 42 crore nett which is a big number for this film.

The weekend trend of the film is very similar to a similar film last year Fukrey Again though the levels were a little lower as that film was around 32 crore nett after the weekend. But Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety could start catching that film as the Monday trend is better and Holi comes into play on Friday and then Fukrey Returns was just a two week runner as Tiger Zinda Hai released in its third week. No 3 Akshay Kumar: His high quality drama Padman was as much talked about as the blockbuster of the year Padmaavat. Movie couldnt cross 100 Cr but remains profitable and another feather in Akshay’s cap. All eyes of 2point0 and Gold in 2018.

No 4: Varun Dhawan – He is now cementing his No 4 position as no new comer barring Ranveer is giving him competition.

No 5: Ranveer Singh: Huge appreciation in Blockbuster movie changes the equation and Ranveer jumps close to Varun here. He needs a quick release to go to No 4 or Varun has to give a flop.

No 5: Ajay DevGn : The eternal star Ajay retains his No 5 after delivering a huge hit in Golmaal. If Raid is a hit he can climb higher.

If you’re looking to scratch that crime drama itch then you should check out McMafia, AMC’s excellent new series. It’s The Godfather for a new generation. The show is called McMafia because it’s all about franchising crime, just like you would a McDonald’s. Now, in The Godfather, most of the crime was relegated to New York and Las Vegas, but these gangsters are dealing in Dubai, Tel Aviv, Mumbai, and Prague. In the digital age, they can control shipments and lock down deals with the press of a button. Imagine what kind of empire Michael Corleone could have amassed if he’d had an iPad.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety was rock steady on Tuesday with a limited drop from Monday as it grossed 4.50 crore nett and this takes the collections of the film to over 35 crore nett in just five days. The film is doing excellent business in all major cities across India.

The film will have Pari for competition this week which is a horror film but the horror does look a bit weak so its unlikely to affect the run of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety which is established for a strong run now. The week is going over 42 crore nett and then the second Friday will tell if the film can emerge a SUPER HIT or maybe ven better. If the collections on Friday (real value as its Holi so they could go up) are similar to Thursday then this film could go anywhere.

The collections of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety till date are as follows.

Infact, if Dabangg 3 finalizes 28th Dec release date then Zero may also push itself to 2019 and Dabangg 3 will be the only film releasing in the holidays. Ranveer/Shetty will definitely not clash with Salman, and SRK may chicken out given his current form and high investments in Zero.

Salman may be doing this purposefully; as he may not want Ranveer to get another high grosser with holiday advantages after Padmaavat success.

Agree. Khans have always supported each other and protected their territory by forming a cartel since last 5 years. They have also clashed like in the case of Tiger Vs Raees during Eid, and then Raees got shifted. However they still help by transferring good projects within them.

        Like

        • Last 5 years? That cartel had existed since nineties with shifting internal dynamics over time. There was a time not long ago when Aamir would suck up to Salman. Now he has shifted more towards SRK. But overall they prefer each other blatantly and publicly over other contemporaries like Akshay, Ajay, Saif, etc. And the media/PR machinery plays up to them.

Zero may get pushed to Republic Day 2019 and clash with Hritik’s Super30. 2.0 may target a Pongal release eventually. Simmba probably in April 2019. Most of the time these advance declaration of release dates are done unrealistically but systematically, just to hype up the project.

For Akshay, I think it is better if 2.0 gets 2019 release. Padman has overall made positive noise and his hit streak is likely to continue with another 125-135 cr hit in Gold. But he will be ready to jump up with releases like 2.0, Kesari and Housefull 4 in 2019, which can all do 200+ cr in India.

Aamir will go for a 2-3 year hiatus with his Mahabharata plans. Salman is again risking it with Bharat in 2019. So ideally its the best year for Akshay to take a leap.

Tashan – The movie did not release in multiplexes in first weekend as YRF had a problem with the agreement. Still the movie made close to 70Cr after losing out on a potential 10 Cr then

Jaaneman – A brilliant movie with very good song. The movie failed to reach its potential as SRK clashed with Don.

Chandni chowk to China – This was coming after SIK. It had everything – Christmas release, martial arts, deepika, blockbuster song, comedy and the film tanked despite good opening.

These three created a deep impact on Akshay’s trajectory. There are few more but with lesser impact.

    • Brad Pitt and Leonardo – what a star cast.

I need to bring this out for others to read.

From the link above which hardly reveals anything and i almost scrolled down (as it was from Aamirsfan and thoughts its another Chinese tweet on SS) before reading Tarantino in the link. 🙂

      =======================

Quentin Tarantino’s next film will be titled “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” and will star Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, it was announced Wednesday by the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

The film has been shrouded in mystery and conjecture up to this point, with many rumors that it somehow related to Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders. According to the news release, the film’s release date will be Aug. 9, 2019, which is also the 50th anniversary of the shocking news regarding the murder of actress Sharon Tate and four others in Los Angeles.

In a news release, Tarantino describes the film as “a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor … Sharon Tate.”

Also in the statement, Tarantino said, “I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

The top four films belong to Aamir Khan but all of them were released in China and some other non-traditional markets. Especially Dangal and Secret Superstar did something unimaginable as the China gross of both films surpassed the domestic business.

Padmaavat has evicted Tiger Zinda Hai from the top list which grossed $20.07 million. Now Aamir Khan has five films on the chart while Salman Khan and SRK have two films each.

Sridevi – A Very Rare Female Star
    Thursday 01 March 2018 12.15 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The word STAR is a pretty misused word today due to the paparazzi as the need to put out information and pictures everybody appearing in films and television is a star. But what is a real star? Our reading of it is that it is someone who is liked by enough of the film going audience that makes the audience want to watch them.

The audience is prepared to pay and give their time and this what separates the real stars from paparazzi stars. The former will be very few while the latter will be in huge numbers. Now lets look at the scenario today we have possibly 4-5 genuine box office stars (all male) and then possibly another 7-8 stars (male and female). Now with such limited genuine stars it means the media has to create stars for their needs as the amount of time they have to give to entertainment news cannot be sustained by 11 or 12 people.

The demise of Sridevi has been all over the news lately and as you take a look at the filmography and the numbers then it comes out she was a very rare female star. We have not created a genuine male box office star in the last fifteen years or more so it would take some doing by a female to achieve that status. But Sridevi was one of the four genuine female box office stars that the Hindi film industry has created, someone who really mattered at the box office as a sole entity. Basically in the same bracket as the Khans are today. This is actually unthinkable today that a female star can reach that level today but you can never say never as its happened before. Blockbusters of the proportions of Bahubali – the Conclusion were there in the past but was unthinkable today but it happenned.

Below are the four female box stars that the industry has seen over the last 75 years or so. The period of box office domination is in brackets.

Mumtaz (1970-1974) – The first female star to have real box office clout. The blockbusters came with superstar Rajesh Khanna but the actors who were not doing well like Sanjeev Kumar (Khilona), Sanjay Khan (Mela) and Feroz Khan (Mela, Apradh) got big hits because of her popularity. Many newcomers got paired with Mumtaz as distributors picked up films on her name and one of these newcomers was even future superstar Amitabh Bachchan in Bandhe Haath. Due to the super hit heroine this film fetched a higher price than Zanjeer, the film which made Amitabh Bachchan a star. Rajesh Khanna lost super stardom in late 72 to early 73 but the films with Mumtaz still worked like Roti, Aap Ki Kasam and Prem Kahani in 74-75.

Hema Malini: (1973 – 1982) – The Mumtaz phase did not last long within the industry as she decided to quit the industry and stopped signing films. Though in the audience eyes Mumtaz remained a huge star till 1974 as her films released, it was over within the industry in 1972 and the biggest benficiary was Hema Malini as many of the rejected Mumtaz films went to her including Seeta Aur Geeta. Hema Malini then probably went on to emerge the biggest female star ever. If the Mumtaz blockbusters came with early 70’s superstar Rajesh Khanna then the Hema Malini blockbusters came with the mid 70’s superstar Dharmendra including the biggest of them all Sholay and 15 odd other 200 crore nett plus grossers (todays rates). She even gave the fading stars like Rajendra Kumar (Gora Aur Kala) and Dev Anand (Amir Garib) huge hits. The blockbusters continued into the 80’s like Kranti and Naseeb and although these were multistarrers, Hema Malini had a huge presence in these films despite the galaxy of stars in them.

Sridevi (1984 – 1992) – Sridevi became a huge star in 1983 with Himmatwala which was a huge hit and at that time there was a vacant top spot and she had grabbed it in no time. Himmatwala is said to be released in the same week of her death but the film was actually released on 4th February in Delhi / UP and East Punjab and clashed with a bigger star cast film Taqdeer (Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman and Mithun Chakraborty) and did not do well with the bigger film out grossing it but later on Himmatwala emerged a huge hit. The hits flowed with Justice Chaudhary, Mawaali, Maqsad and Tohfa. Then like Mumtaz and Hema Malini earlier she carried many heroes in films like Nagina, Mr India and Chandni all which did very well especially Nagina which was a huge blockbuster. There was a film called Guru which had Mithun Chakraborty at his peak in the title role but it was Sridevi who was in the double role. This is like the heroine having a double role in Salman Khan’s Sultan. The numbers of Sridevi may not have been high as Mumtaz or Hema Malini but this was also a bad phase (almost as bad as today) in the industry as video had taken over and footfalls had dwindled.

Madhuri Dixit: (1991 – 1997) – Madhuri Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen. Tezaab made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan. But at this point of time Sridevi was the reigning star and in a big way and it was films like Dil, Saajan and Beta which made Madhuri Dixit that box office star. Dil had Aamir Khan but it became a Madhuri Dixit film, coincidentally the first four big hits of Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela and Raja Hindustani) all propelled the heroines as they took the credit. Saajan had Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan while Beta had Anil Kapoor but generally it was Madhuri Dixit leading the way in these films. Even Shahrukh Khan played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in Anjaam but Shahrukh Khan was on a crest of a wave at the time and the audience could not accept him as an outright villain and the film was rejected. Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that no heroine had ever reached this level but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even for a huge male star and the downfall started.

After these huge female stars there has been Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone who at a given point of time have been number one heroines but generally not at a level where they can compete with the top male leads of the time. The next to test this will be Alia Bhatt and here it could be that she challenges the heroes of her generation but will those heroes be real box office stars.

          Liked by 1 person

        • Well, the first decade of Aamir’s career was concentrated on romantic films and his USP was basically of a romantic hero. The heroine always had a strong part and also got their due too (but he was never overshadowed in any sense as BOI wants to imply). This was not only true for his major superhits (QSQT, Dil, Rangeela, Raja Hindustaani); but it was the case with his smaller hits too – Pooja Bhat in DHKMN, Juhi Chawla in HHRPK/Ishq, Rani in Ghulam, all these girls shared the limelight and success. This was also true for SRK’s romantic hits – Kajol in DDLJ/KKHH/K3G, Madhuri/Karisma in DTPH, Preity Zinta in KHNK/VZ, etc etc. But these were not the case of HAHK, where Madhuri had completely taken over.

Anyways, coming back to Aamir, he did play ‘tougher’ roles in Rangeela/Ghulam but these films had lots of romance. He really diversified starting from Sarfarosh. Since Sarfarosh and then Lagaan, his movies became more topical and genre-based with romance as one of the subplots (except perhaps a rare Fanaa).

It’s false truth. As huge as Madhuri was, during Saajan Sanjay Dutt was pretty big. And it had a huge musical score plus Salman. Dil had a huge musical score too. Her Everest moment was HAHK and post that Raja where she dominated her heroes. Post that she didn’t dominate as much. Dtph SRK was huge, karishma post rh was big and Akshay’s 2 minute role was legendary/iconic/monumental for box office of DTPH.

The Sridevi column + China column explains precisely why western culture cannot be blamed for its ignorance of Bollywood/India etc. If the media in India cannot provide adequate written knowledge of Sridevi’s career (read BOI who only speak to Hindi cinema and don’t care to mention her other successes) and cannot report box office collections precisely like the rest of the world (read BOI and it’s inability to incorporate overseas collections) then God help you. The West is no more dumber than the site you love.

    Q. Every other major website and trade person adds dubbed China collections to worldwide total but not boxofficeindia which is wrong as it should go in Wordwide even if its dubbed and so should Tamil and Telugu collections be added to India totals. When will BOI give the whole worldwide collections as Dangal is 2200 crore not 702 crore.

    S. Mehra

    A. Every other website also has higher collections sometimes even 50 crore more. Just because everyone does it does it mean its correct. First the Tamil and Telugu collections are not added but its for every film. Its the same for Bahubali – The Conclusion also, otherwise this film should also have the Tamil and Telugu collections added but the media knows if they do for this then it will never be broken so you have one rule for one film and another rule for other films. 2.0 is doing 400 crore nett the way media reports on a worse case scenario and this film is bilingual with some characters speaking Tamil and others Hindi but here the media will not be reported in full and only Hindi collections taken. The difference with BoxOfficeIndia is that its one rule for every film not as per demand of time. The collections you see on the website are like for like so the comparisons make sense and are valid. Going forward this trend of bilinguals will become more prevalent as the need is for bigger films and bilinguals can be made with higher production values but there is a system here since inception ob website and that will be kept same.

Now coming to China its actually not dubbed but partly dubbed, partly subtitled and partly voice overs but basically its not the same film as in India and changed to suit the Far East markets. It is two different films. This market is basically like Russia pre 1992 and this is one of the reasons that the database is stuck at 1993 as the Russia collections come into play and as we go into the early 90’s, 80’s and 70’s, there are some films which are far bigger in Russia than Dangal is in China. Also just like China these films were not watched by an Indian origin crowd but the local crowd. Again like China, the films were not the same as they were for India but adjusted for the Russian markets. But what happens when these numbers get added is that it changes history as per what the general Indian audience knows. So the worldwide greats are not Mughal E Azam, Sholay, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun or Gadar as Hindi film watchers across the world believe because these either flopped in Russia or did not release there but other films which were not blockbusters in India and some of these were not even HIT in India. When these Far East or Russian collections are added its like having 1 cr red apples and 1 cr green apples and then adding up saying i have 2 cr red apples when in reality its 1 cr red ones and 1 cr green ones.

Now these Russia and China collections will not be added and collections reported in the same way as they are at the present time. Simply put he likes Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Secret Superstar, Dangal and many others are not legendary greats but with Russia or China they become bigger than the legendary films especially Disco Dancer.

But the business of these films across all markets is noted and by the end of the year when the database has another 10-12 years added, there will be another seperate section where these Russian and Far East collections and Tamil Telugu can be seen so a film has a total with all its versions added. But main section will always be like for like and will not add red and green apples and then say there are all red apples. This will be understood more when the figures are updated and people can make own conclusions to which way gives more accurate picture.

India is a diverse nation with huge socio-economic & demographic/linguistic diversity for them to adhere to one particular type of cinema. For you urban folks, films like Piku & Pink might be classics but for the mass sector residing in tier 2 & 3 cities, the narrative of these films are non understandable & hence they’re rejected among this audience. Conversely, a Rowdy Rathore or a Singham might seem trash to urban metropolitan audience (who barely form 25% of the total audience) but are adored by the masses at large. To call the masses “tasteless” & “classless” due to their liking for such cinema equates to narcissism & hypocrisy. You guys are no different from BOI, just the opposite views of what they have. BOI clowns have been insulting films like Neerja & Pink repeatedly due to their urban narrative & praising Judwaa 2 & Golmaal 4 due to their mass appealing content, you guys have been doing exactly the opposite. There is no “good cinema” & “bad cinema”. Its all a matter of taste & perception. And yes this comes from a viewer whose adored both Dabangg & Pink in equal measure, albeit for different reasons.

        • Most people here aren’t on the ‘side’ of little films or prestige films or whatever. But even if we were it’s irrelevant because we’re not claiming to be a box office ‘source’. BOI are and therefore their commentary is problematic. But it’s not just this. Their ratings of smaller films are equally problematic. Using their standards it’s always easier for a 100 or 200 crore grosser or whatever to get tagged as some kind of success whereas a smaller film almost has to do 70% of the business of a big film to get the same ‘benefit of the doubt’. Mysteriously the budgets of big films always lag behind (if this is true this is the only industry in the world where it happens and I doubt that’s the case), based on some arbitrary 100/200 crore number (or these days 300) there’s a ‘no questions asked’ policy. Meanwhile we’re supposed to believe that unless smaller films do 70 crores or more they’re always failures. So it’s not only the commentary that’s absurd but also the ratings.

But getting to your larger point once again no one is against smaller films. I have detected this attitude myself in certain quarters (not just here but also in the media and elsewhere) where people automatically assume that a smaller, different film is ‘better’ than a mass entertainer. The answer though is not to choose one or the other but to dismiss this false opposition. It all depends on the film. I find many smaller films to be empty and many big commercial films to be more meaningful. But it’s also just not about meaning. There’s no profound meaning in Baahubali but the director just does everything very well here. I have no issues with such an effort. This also ties into an older bourgeois reading of these things where ‘masala’ cinema was often misunderstood as formula entertainment. A lot of it was this but this is true for any genre. The staple genres of any age are always formulaic. It’s only the better stuff that tweaks these genres to a greater or lesser degree. And then of course there are riskier films.

But again I’d reject this opposition. This whole ‘masses love this stuff’ is not a meaningful principle. First off it’s (consciously or unconsciously) a condescending label. To my mind multiplex audiences don’t really support more meaningful stuff. It’s just that the genres they support are defined as meaningful (one could have a long discussion on this). The truly edgy stuff is rejected precisely by multiplex audiences in the first place! So as a polemical matter can understand arguing ‘against’ multiplex choices or whatever but one shouldn’t make the mistake of feeding this other ‘mass cinema’ label which itself is a ‘bourgeois’ label. Even if one claims to like both kinds of films equally one should not accept such a label.

I’d finally add that if one is going to be serious about cinema (not that one has to be) and one is going to make a list of more meaningful or great films one cannot just go by these labels or oppositions. Just because HAHK was an extraordinary hit or an enjoyable film doesn’t mean it’s a ‘good’ film in the way that Lagaan is a ‘good’ film. This should be obvious to anyone who knows anything about cinema. Now this doesn’t mean one cannot enjoy lesser pleasures. I have my own list of guilty pleasures and I am much more likely to show up at the theater for one of these! But enjoying something is different from considering it ‘valuable’. It’s true — just because some films have worthy subjects or worthy messages it doesn’t automatically imply that they’re fine films (almost all of Akshay’s ‘different’ films fall in this category.. even if they’re certainly an upgrade on his comedies). The media or people on blogs support such films in a knee jerk way. But the opposite also isn’t true. ‘Hey this is the real stuff that the real masses’ love is another kind of fiction. This betrays not just a certain attitude but I actually consider it false in a factual sense. For instance certain genres are supported by second and third tier audiences not because they like those films (consider how most of these films trend even in those centers) but because they’re looking for certain formulations, certain representations that they don’t find anywhere else. If I want the masala world Salman’s debased versions are my only option! It’s not as if there are other choices. But we see how when the real deal (baahubali) was on offer it went way past every such masala effort even as a dubbed film. Or we’ve seen how no Salman film (not one! Including dabanng) was able to match Ghajini’s initial (making the necessary adjustments) or even more importantly trend like it (doubling the week 1 number more or less). Why not? No matter how big the initial this didn’t happen. Not even with Dabanng, a film which was otherwise loved in other ways. Because at the end of the day quality matters. Ghajini had the stronger narrative. Quality matters with every audience. Multiplex audiences might like certain genres and they’ll see lots of silly stuff for this reason but ultimately quality prevails. Or else it has to be a supremely entertaining film. The mistake is to not notice these differences. No one is against ‘mass films’. But I am certainly against junk films, whether they’re patronized by multiplex audiences or those in other centers. But ‘junk films’ isn’t the same as ‘mass films’. Even ‘guilty pleasures’ must have something going for them. But yeah audiences all over the world like lots of junk. So what? It doesn’t make those films more respectable!

Actually one more point. There is such a thing as a prestige project. But this is not the same thing as a multiplex-only deal.

        • @Satyamshot : Excellence & entertainment are not independent entities in the creative domain. And there need not be any need of using terms like “guilty pleasure” when you do not differentiate between the two. For me, TWMR, Dabangg, Padmaavat, Bajrangi, Baahubali, Dangal etc are not only entertaining film, but excellent one’s too (yes i include Dabangg in this as well). As for Lagaan, as i have mentioned before, there is no such thing as a universal excellent film. Quality is a matter of perception. You & many more Aamir Khan fanatics (yes most of u guys aren’t fans but outright shameless fanatics hiding under the garb of intellectualism just like your favorite star) might be tempted to believe 3 Idiots, PK, RDB etc might be the last words in cinematic excellence but as per me (& many other i know of) these films are just ordinary entertainers with few moments of excellence no doubt, but also multiple moments of bogus over the top dramatics (delivering babies using vacuum cleaners is much more preposterous than a Salman or Ajay jumping off rooftops firing bullets). Opinions and tastes of every individual need to be heard out & respected without being mocked at, something that intellectual AK fans & 1 particular Salman maniac (who calls AB, Sachin & AK as substandard performers) on this blog fail to comprehend. In short, few commentators here are no different from the trolls you witness on Taran Adarsh’s & KRK’s twitter handle, the only difference being that the language used here is slightly more polite.

Yes they were extremely successful at the BO & I understand they were adored by a lot of folks who watched them and nowhere am i questioning their BO success or attempting to claim that their BO success is not well deserved (unlike certain commentators on this blog who’re perennial HR critics & go to the extent of claiming that the success of the Krrish films is a fluke & undeserved only & only because of their own personal disliking of the films), but for me they continue to remain terrible intolerable films!

          Like

        • the whole problem is with this ‘for me’ claim. You are free to like or dislike anything. If Fanaa and Ghajini caused migraines you probably have a steady supply of painkillers for the rest of Bollywood (!) but that’s another matter. The point is there’s a difference between saying ‘for me’ and insisting this is as valid a judgment as any other. ‘For me’ Guru Dutt might be a boring filmmaker. This doesn’t mean that he’s not worthwhile otherwise. maybe the ‘for me’ has never gotten an education in these matters. maybe the ‘for me’ just has bad taste. Any number of possibilities. Now one doesn’t have to ‘like’ every worthwhile out there (as a matter of fact I’m not much of a Guru Dutt fan) but there’s a different between saying ‘I don’t like him’ or ‘he doesn’t work for me’ and claiming ‘he’s causing a headache’. Following your logic (which why by the way is contradictory.. after defending mass films and the tastes of those audiences you’re suddenly rejecting Ghajini!) it’s always unknowable. Maybe Kick is a better film than Baahubali! The ‘for me’ claim is worthless unless it is limited to just that or unless it also has a ‘but’ attached to it. ‘I don’t like this film, it didn’t work for me BUT I know it’s otherwise well-made, etc…). No one’s stopping you from enjoying anything. But consider the real logical absurdity created by your position. If every film is only good or bad depending on the ‘for me’ or depending on ‘who’ likes it or not then there is no such thing as a good or bad film. So you disliked Ghajini but someone else liked it, the opposite for Dabanng, the same for every other film. How does one know whether any of these films is good or bad? If it’s about the audience Ghajini must be a good film. If it’s not and it’s about other kinds of critical judgment then your argument doesn’t hold anyway. Forget about who’s being fair or unfair to certain kinds of films here. What’s your standard? If it’s just yourself that’s useless. Because there are then as many standards as people who watch films!

Even if Ghajini was like by 70% of the viewers who watched it, does not imply that the other 30% opinions are unworthy (even if its a movie starring your lord Aamir Khan). As for mass films, Deewaar & Sholay are 2 of my all time favorites while Dabangg is my fav masala movie of this decade (not that i’m much of an SK fan, before you cronies shoot your mouths off), but any amount of praise for films like Fanaa & Ghajini would not change the fact that these 2 are trash worthy for a certain section of the audience, however small that section might be. So that pretty much settles the issue about me being an SK crony as was being accused by you. Pointless accusations never really serve the purpose, do they? As for BOI, its a laughable blasphemous and a fraud website fooling box office followers for over 1.5 decades now. There are only 2 ways of comparing films : 1. Based on their specific target audience, in which scenario the domestic nett collections and footfalls would be suffice. 2. To compare universal numbers of all version, all languages as this indicates the kind of reach the films has had among a global audience. Comparing Hindi version numbers of overseas and ignoring the dubbed versions (which actually truly represents the penetration of the film among the non Hindi audience) is laughable and ridiculous, a synonym for BOI.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan Chinese Box-Office Prediction: Bajrangi Bhaijaan is set to release in China tomorrow i.e. 2nd March 2018 and the advance booking of the film is currently in progress in the country. The makers had arranged a couple of preview shows in China last weekend, and the film fetched an extremely positive response from the viewers.

Despite a few drawbacks as mentioned by us earlier, the movie is set to take a good start at the box office in China on its opening day. As things stand currently, approximately 49,000 tickets of the film have been sold in advance and the count is expected to increase to 90,000 – 95,000 by the time the film releases. In terms of US Dollars, the movie has already collected $0.25 Million and the same is expected to surge to $0.45 Million by the end of advance sales.

Releasing on 8,000 plus screens, the distributors have allotted approximately 25,000 shows to Bajrangi Bhaijaan. As compared to this, Dangal was allotted 27,000 shows whereas Secret Superstar show count was as high as 57,000.

Given the response to the advance ticket sales as well as the word of mouth from preview shows, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is expected to take a very good opening of $1.25 – 1.35 Million (Rs 8.20 – 8.80 crores). The opening day footfalls of Bajrangi Bhaijaan as expected to be anywhere in the range of 2,10,000 to 2,25,000. The dynamics of business in China are far different from that in India wherein Saturday and not Sunday is the biggest day for the film business.

Comparing it with other Bollywood release in China, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is expected to go past the lifetime collections of films like Baahubali ($1.17 Million), Fan ($0.23 Million), Happy New Year ($0.40 Million) and My Name Is Khan ($0.07 Million) on its opening day itself whereas the likes of 3 Idiots ($3.02 Million) and Dhoom 3 ($3.23 Million) will be surpassed in its opening weekend. However, a point to be noted here is the fact that the Chinese market was not as lucrative as it is now for Bollywood films at the time when 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, Happy New Year and My Name Is Khan released. It is PK, followed by Dangal and Secret Superstar that helped Indian films get popularity in China.

While it would be difficult to predict the opening weekend business, our expectations from the film in terms of weekend biz is $6 – $6.25 Million (Rs 39 to 41 crore,) however a higher number cannot be ruled out. In the past, Aamir Khan’s Dangal opened at $2.15 Million and the opening weekend collections were around $12.51 Million as the biz escalated every passing day due to positive word of mouth. If the audience connects with the emotions, the possibility of a trend similar to Dangal (Weekend = 5.81 times of Opening Day) cannot be ruled out. The top Indian opener in China currently is Secret Superstar ($6.5 Million)

Box Office Prediction of Bajrangi Bhaijaan:

Opening Day: $1.25 to $1.35 Million
    Opening Day Footfalls: 2,10,000 – 2,25,000
    Opening Weekend: $6 – 6.25 Million
    Opening Weekend Footfalls: 12,00,000 – 12,50,000

  90. @Satyam – A couple of your good comments got lost in a deluge of silly comments. But I would like to add something to it. As you said, lets put aside ‘for me’ and guilty pleasures. I would broadly classify movies in the following categories:

    1. Well-made masala entertainers
    2. Junk masala
    3. Well-made entertainers with profound meaning
    4. Meaningful films not well-made
    5. Well-made multiplex film
    6. Junk multiplex film

Now the well-made films will always get a thumbs up, whether it is small or big, masala or multiplex, meaningful or not. Its difficult to argue that Dangal is better than Sholay because it carries a social message. It does not stick. Nor does anyone go around claiming RDB is better than Baahubali because it is a multiplex film.

However, when it comes to junk films it is a bit different IMO. Its pointless to say multiplex formula is better than masala formula. That boils down to srk and salman fans fighting over which is better between JHMS or Kick.

But what happens many time is that bad films which are well-meaning are sometimes considered better efforts than trash with no meaning. And average films with a message can get lionized by fans. Salman fans or Akshay fans go around celebrating TEPK, Padman or BB. In doing so, they unknowingly accept that their otherwise film choices are guilty pleasures.

  94. Vladimir Putin spoke of developing hypersonic weapons that can evade existing missile defense systems

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon on Thursday brushed off Russian President Vladimir Putin’s boast of developing “invincible” missiles, claiming the United States was fully prepared for anything that might come its way.

In his state of the nation address, Putin described several advances in missile technology, including a hypersonic weapon that can fly at many times the speed of sound and evade existing missile defense systems.

“We are not surprised by (Putin’s) statement, and the American people should rest assured that we are fully prepared,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said.

White said she was “very confident” in America’s ability to react to “anything that may come our way.” “We are prepared and we are ready,” she said.

Hypersonic weapons under development by Russia and China — as well as by the United States — can beat regular anti-missile defenses because they are designed to switch direction in flight and do not follow a predictable arc like conventional missiles, making them much harder to track and intercept.

But despite the Pentagon’s claims, America is far from capable of stopping any type of missile attack, a fact it has lived with since the Cold War.

While it has had some limited success in developing interceptors capable of stopping one or two missiles from a rogue regime like North Korea, a barrage of nukes from Russia or anywhere else would be unstoppable and trigger the “mutually assured destruction” of both nations.

Still, US officials increasingly are turning attention to trying to develop some sort of defense against hypersonic missiles.
