Secret Superstar become Highest Worldwide Grosser of 2017

Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has become the highest worldwide grosser of 2017 after its China release. The film has overtaken Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai to claim the top spot. Secret Superstar did not perform up to the expectations in the domestic market however it has done wonders in China.
The list is followed by Golmaal Again which managed to over 300 crores. Shahrukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Tubelight claim the 4th and 5th spot respectively. There is also Baahubali 2 which collected over 800 crores only from the Hindi version in worldwide.
This is actually a very rare scenario where the top Hindi net grosser of the year belongs to Tiger Zinda Hai while the highest overseas and worldwide grosser is Secret Superstar. But that has happened only after the release in China where 99% of the Hindi films are not released. Meanwhile, there is Baahubali 2 too which is the top grosser in net and worldwide business if we consider the dubbed Hindi version.
Secret Superstar and Tiger Zinda Hai are also among the highest worldwide grossers of all time. They have replaced Bajirao Mastani and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Padmaavat is expected to enter into the top 10 soon which will exclude Dilwale from the list.

The Greatest Showman has been critically slammed, but has been doing well at BO everywhere it has released till now. Not sure how it will fare in China. Should open well due to presence of Hugh Jackman.
SS has crossed 75 M$ and surpassed Jumanji in China. Dont think The Greatest Showman will effect SS, even if it gets accepted.

Bollywood movie ‘Secret Superstar’ beats out ‘Maze Runner’ sequel in China

Bollywood’s latest hit film “Secret Superstar” outperformed American action films and homegrown historical dramas in China’s box office last week, once again demonstrating the Middle Kingdom’s attachment to Indian musicals.
The film grossed $38 million and rose above three Hollywood movies, reaching $65.4 million after 10 days, according to film consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
The movie stars Aamir Khan, beloved in China, and focuses on a teenage Muslim girl overcoming hardships as she becomes a singer. Khan has more than 1 million followers on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, earning him the nickname “Uncle Mi.”
His previous family drama “Dangal,” set a record in China last year for a non-Hollywood foreign film. It drew nearly $190 million in ticket sales.
Chinese period drama holdover “Forever Young” earned $26.6 million, accumulating $95 million after 17 days.
The only new release of the week, 20th Century Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” opened with $22.7 million in its first three days.
The sci-fi action film is the third and final installment in the “Maze Runner” series, which stars Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario.
Lionsgate’s family drama “Wonder,” based on the novel of the same name, earned $9.6 million in its second week of release, grossing $18.2 million after 10 days.
The film, which tells the story of a boy with a facial deformity, failed to draw fans despite the presence of Julia Roberts, who is popular in China.
Another 20th Century Fox release 3D animation movie “Ferdinand” added $9 million for a total of $18.5 million in ticket sales.

SS has crossed Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s worldwide gross today. After TZH, Sultan and now Bajrangi Bhaijaan, all the highest grossers of Salman has been beaten by a 15 cr budget film with Aamir in supporting role.
I dont think anything like this has happened before, even when Raj Kapoor became famous in Russia or when SRK broke open in NRI markets or in Germany.

Highest SRK grosser there is 0.5M$ and it’s NRI market for SRK there more or less.When u r into NRI Market there is an upper limit.But what Aamir has done in China can’t be compared with anything ever.

Personally think now TOH will work (minimum massive opening) in China now. It’s stardom out there for him, they are turning up to see him especially if they are dancing to that ridiculous song sexy baliye.
Ghajini (female fan following will cry loads), RDB (social message – easy winner), QSQT (same reason for Ghajini). I wouldn’t go beyond that. Sarforosh is an Indian/Pakistan story, MP and Lagaan I doubt they will like.
If Bajrangi Bhaijaan works (say $10mm) than that is really it for Salman in China. Nothing else will work at that level.
Beyond that I think China will need to be wooed by a star like they have to Aamir before they start loving Bollywood films the way we do.

Bajrangi’s Weibo page is using a video of Aamir Khan’s recommendation to promote the film . I actually liked Mangal Pandey a lot, found AK…sexy. The Holi song, the Rasika song, Aamir emerging out of the water in an initial scene like a BoDerek….wooh!☺️
I feel Mangal Pandey could work. It had its negative points, but I loved its unique soundtrack and the picturization of the songs. And it was far more historically accurate than Bajirao Mastani.

caught up on Mela. It was a commercial potboiler on par with the best of Aamir’s competitors(Rowdy Rathore/Dabangg/Chennai Express). Going by Aamir standards, it was a massive let down. If Aamir remakes Mela, it could do 200 cr in today’s scenario.

SS has already had an amazing run in China with almost 80 M$ (500+ cr) coming in 2 weeks. The only point of interest remaining now, is whether it can cross 100 M$. For that it will need 10 M$ this weekend, which may be difficult due to a lot of new releases.
Aamir has heavily promoted Bollywood’s song and dance routine during his SS promotions in Beijing this time. We have seen videos of fans dancing to sexy baliye and what not. But I still doubt whether our song and dance movies will work there in large. Aamir perhaps wanted his chinese fans to prepare for TOH’s disco dhamaka.
BO opening will be there, but wont count on a 100 M$ total for TOH in China.
Also, I doubt if the success of Dangal and SS can be attributed to a higher ratio of female audience in China than in India. Maybe the Chinese male audience is more tolerant and interested in the concepts of gender equality and female empowerment, than in India or in NRI markets.
It is the same movie being shown to the Indian audience and the Chinese audience. But the reactions have been drastically different. For the Indian audience, Advait has perhaps made a film much ahead of its time. SS will likely have better shelf life than many of Aamir’s ‘Indian’ blockbusters.
Anyway you dice it or splice it, SS collections dont put Indian audience in a good light. India may be OK to see a father treating his daughters as sons at this point, but it is far off from a society that encourages its females to sort out their own problems. I am sure Padman will do much better in India than SS, mainly due to a male star providing sanitary solution here.
And issues close to home like domestic violence are often more acceptable when shown in the backdrop of a foreign society.
SS did the way it did in India in most of the world except China…China has just taken to Aamir now..As Jayshah said they should release Aamirs old movies there….even Mela…
I think largely the movie did better than the movie was purely due to Aamir Khan in India as well overseas. But in China Aamir Khan is like God so there it is doing like a commercial masala movie…
I dont think there is any issue with Indian audience in any way. After seeing the movie I feel it has definitely done more than it can in India and it is purely due to Aamir. Remove him it would have struggled to cross 25 crs in India.
Yes this I agree with. He is behaving like a masala commercial star out there. It’s these videos – it’s like Justin Bieber or when Hrithik swept the Indian audience in 2000. Hrithik followed with huge initials but average films. The bar is a little lower here for Aamir. My gut feel is China could tolerate a song and dance film with him if for example he dies in it or its gut wrenchingly emotional. Then you really need a string of films to go in and eventually cross border films.
The US won’t spread like this – only if it’s Oscar worthy.
I’m speaking more from the view point of business and how to grow it.
Other overseas business is still Indian audience. There does not seem to be much difference between the reaction from NRI (non resident indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis/srilankans) or from Indians in India. But comparatively SS business has been better in NRI markets than in India.
Anyways, a film does not do 100 M$ because of a star in a supporting role. That is a convenient and naive take to ignore the obvious. The film itself has worked in the Chinese market in a big way.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly should all be exported – it is a prime opportunity to test. The reality is China will have more potential than the US for business if someone follows Aamir and soon. His shell life is finite given his age he won’t go into his 60’s doing this.
It’s like a toddler trying new foods. The first taste needs to be the right temperature, texture, taste and then they will try something again. Eventually they will not like something but they’ll get use to Indian food.
Obviously Aamir is leading the charge but it’s possible to ‘convert’ more success. Others will reap the benefits too.
Jay, I wasn’t talking about Aamirs behavior. In fact i haven’t seen any of the videos. I am just saying that he is very big there so SS is behaving like how a commercial masala movie behaves at the BO…This is not just about content, this is about Aamir the star in China..
In other words if SS didn’t have Aamir, it would have struggled to do even 25 mn in China…
We can check out what happens to BB. That’s a very good movie too probably Salmans best and is message oriented too…We will get an idea when it releases. I doubt it will even do 10 mn
I think the word I am looking for is he has a lot of leverage right now. And with that the ‘right’ thing is to spread it back into the Indian film industry. But like a toddler should know good and bad foods. China should see the worst of Aamir films too and if they can still tolerate aspects of it – it’s a genuine non NRI market that can accept Indian cinema regularly.
The problems are the major stars who would want a slice of the pie are all 40+ or 50+. You really need strong young actors or actresses to make a breakthrough.
this 2nd straight success will change everything Aamir Khan will do as an actor and producer – he may just co-produce a film in China – just imagine the profits he will earn as a producer…….this will also change his market price in India……every film of his will projected to do 500+ cr worldwide – he and can straightaway ask 50% of that if not producing it…..interesting whether now he will change is slow pace of working…..
China, it is necessary to get a revenue sharing deal like 25% for Secret Superstar. If Thugs of Hindostan can get similar deal and perform as well as Dangal and Secret Superstar, his market price will only go north.
I think he can safely open a branch of his production house in China now – govt. will surely oblige. He would be a fool not to do something on this line. 65 cr in India and 650 cr (projected) – that is insane amount of business proposition to ignore with…..he better relocate to China 😉
After Dangal and SS success in China, many from bollywood will want a piece of the pie. But I dont see Bajrangi doing more than 5 M$ or TOH doing more than 50 M$ in China.
Neither Dangal nor SS is regular bollywood commercial masala potboiler. People tend to forget that D3 did not do much in China.

SS in China would give AKP a share of 160 cr (similar to Dangal from China since Dangal was revenue sharing at 12.5% and did almost twice)
I think him becoming bigger and bigger has a direct correlation with the quality of his films. In fact, I suspect it is a casual relationship. After PK, Dangal and SS he is in a position where he can perhaps open a regular bollywood commercial like TOH to 25 M$ in this market. BUT it will need more than average or mixed WOM to do more than double the opening.

Dangal will continue to be the most loved Indian movie in China by a mile. There were hopes of Secret Superstar challenging that with it’s bigger opening, but it was n’t able to keep pace and will fall well short of Dangal numbers of $190 M lifetime in the middle kingdom.
Next month, all eyes on other Khan ‘Salman’ and Bajrangi Bhaijaan to see if he can deliver in China where Aamir failed to edge out Dangal from the top position.
Rob Cain has stopped writing for Forbes and as a result Forbes has not been covering SS in China. I am missing Rob’s articles. He gave daily updates during Dangal in China.
I don’t know what these reporters think.They seems to be totally dumb.Dangal had a historic trending in China which was probably one of the greatest ever .SS has had a great trending as well as it wld do 4x of it’s opening weekend.TLJ had a similar weekend as SS and it wld wrap up under 45M$ LT.
SS has done better in China than Hollywood imports like Star Wars, Jumanji, Greatest Showman, etc etc. That itself is something.
Anyways, if we compare SS box office with Dangal, then one has to account for the budget differential. Dangal was 70 cr budget film that did 2000-2100 cr WW (~30X). And SS is 15 cr budget that will do roughly 800 cr WW (more than 50X). SS is the bigger winner considering its minimal investment.
Secret Superstar probably will reach $100M. About 50% box office of local movie Bad Daddy are forged by distributor’s local partner.(hearing the distributor has relationship with illegal direct sales organization. They were doing money laundering.)

Think, the film is far ahead of its time in India. Most population groups could find reasons to avoid the film. The few people who went to cinema loved the movie. Me too. A complex, multi-layered story, handled with great sensitivity. I saw SeSu in Zurich (Switzerland) and to my delight 30% Chinese were in the room. That was not the case with Dangal yet.
Nevertheless, the success in China surprises me. It is a small movie. Aamir has little screentime and it is not easy to go through this story emotionally. I would have enjoyed over $ 50 million and thought it was possible. But that …. A good opening, that’s because of Aamir. But the movie is strong. If the weather had been better last weekend, we would already touch the $ 100 million. But no matter when, it’s a very big deal.
I am very happy that the film in China receives the love he did not get in India. The courage and effort of the creators are appreciated.
I’ve lived in Munich for 6 months back in 2005. It’s an NRI market. To watch Indian films I had to join an Indian club/society. A German or 2 might be fans but there are a lot of Indians working there from companies like Genpact & Infosys. It’s a big scam to suggest he has a huge native German following.
Obviously I don’t know all of Germany but Munich is a major city for financial sector in general.
The UK it’s possible he might have a non Asian base but even here it will be miniscule.
Mainland Europe can’t be compared to UK. The UK can be compared demographically to the US. There are lots of East Africans and Indians in UK, same is not even close for mainland Europe.

In the cinema SRK films are mostly NRIs, at least 50 to 80%, depending on the film. Since I have to travel abroad for Aamir’s films, I can say that I’m usually the only European in the audience. So it’s a difference. SRK’s German audience is mainly female and between 30 and 60 years old.
The German speaking area is SRK zone (there are still a few fans of Salman and Akshay). After LAGAAN opened the doors and attracted attention, it was SRK who walked through the door. Aamir made no films for years and is still unknown here today. Indian films here are Bollywood and that’s SRK – because only his films ran in infinite repetitions on TV. To come out as a fan of Indian / Hindi films is to make a fool of yourself. The image in the mind is very one-sided here: romance, kitsch, trash, dance, outstretched arms and a lot of overacting and exaggeration.
When I show people movies like TZP, dhobi ghat, Lunchbox or Dangal, they can hardly believe that such works exist. They say: but that’s not like Bollywood, that’s really good movies ….

Tom SRK movies have hardly done between 0.3-0.5M$ over there while Germany is a huge market which clearly implies it’s all abt NRI’s.There must be some european following but that wld be very miniscule.

Its the same in US too outside the Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/SriLankan communities.
I think an overdose of Bollywood commercials releasing in China will also result in a similar feeling among the Chinese audience regarding Indian films at large.
Aamir took a long break after Lagaan Oscar hype and that helped SRK to cement his position not just in India but in the overseas too. But SRK’s films did not help to create any good impression about Bollywood outside NRIs. Now that films like Dangal/SS has worked big, there maybe financial incentive for Chinese distributors to release BW blockbusters in that market. But a heavy dose of Salman’s nonsense it unlikely to sustain the interest of Chinese audience.
aamirsaurabh, it is tiny compared to India and China. Germany has only 82 million inhabitants and a relatively high proportion of older people. Indian movies are only available in a few cinemas in big cities and not nationwide in the normal program. There are also few performances and no weeks of running. Overall, a market that is negligible to ww.

Very regrettable that it is the same in other countries. I joined only a few years ago. Before Aamir’s first film, it was inconceivable for me to see a Bollywood movie. What I saw while zapping on TV frightened me off. I forbade my daughter to see such a movie – which we laugh about today. The Chinese should think carefully about which films are shown and choose wisely. There are so many beautiful things to discover and today I am very happy to have found the world of Indian films.

In comparison,Secret Superstar was watched by 1.6million Chinese on day 1 and cum. total admission count wld be around 22-23 million and it’s safe to assume 99% of those admissions were of local native Chinese.Dangal had 43.5 million admissions in China.
In China 1/33 ppl watched Dangal and 1/60 ppl watched SS while in Germany 1/8200 ppl watched SRK’s biggest grosser(i think it’s HNY).
Penetration of SRK in Germany is not even 1% of what Aamir has in China.Not to forgot population of China is around 18 times of Germany.
Since it is Chinese BO-related here, just wanted to share about Wolf Warrior 2 here. Was released last year and did nearly $900M in China.
I watched it a few months back (with English sub-titles) and found it impressive, especially when it came to the action scenes, special effects and its pacing is fast and relentless.
Yet to see Bollywood reach anywhere near that level in terms of action scenes and stunts.

Aamir Khan’s musical drama production Secret Superstar might have stopped at earnings of 62 crores in India despite a festive Diwali release, but the film is receiving a massive response in China, building on Khan’s reputation there.
We all have been a witness to the mayhem caused by Aamir Khan’s Dangal at the China box office. But talking about Secret Superstar, which has clicked with the audience much more than Dangal could, even if both the movies had an emotional value attached to it.
Making it to the top ten movies of 2017 on Indian IMDb as well, this movie does not seem to come to a standstill soon.
Secret Superstar very smoothly entered the 500 crore club and as of today, it stands at 584.60 crores ($ 91.29 million) in the China box office. The film stands at a grand total of 654.60 crores at the worldwide box office.

These Chinese figures are just incredible. Nothing else in other ‘foreign’ markets is remotely comparable. This is greater than everything else in this sense by an order of magnitude. To repeat myself the real scandal is that this story (or Dangal before it) isn’t the entertainment news lead week after week. Whatever else anyone else has done in the US or UK or wherever it’s light years removed from this. Aamir should release Ghajini in China. Even 3I would work hugely today.
Satyam if 3I sequal comes now Dangal record wld be shattered by a margin there.It is the most populsr foreign film there.They can’t re-release 3I there as it had got released in 2011.
Aamir is like Usain Bolt in China right now. Doing a 4 by 100m all on his own. Soon it’s up to others to make this a long term market. It’s a missed opportunity if it remains only for Aamir’s films. I wish Bajrangi Bhaijaan the best on this score. It’s good news for Indian cinema all-round then.

I have honestly felt that SS fared poorly( to an extent) because of a joint boycott designed to affect both Aamir and Zaira. In fact on twitter the other day, one guy said so — that he wished to watch it but stayed away due to Zaira. I also understand that Zaira is getting plenty of venom on social media pages from the likes of Shefali Vaidya and Madhu Kishwar , since Vistara Airlines insists that Zaira’s accusation against a co- passenger is false.
Plus, the competing Diwali film was obviously another factor.

He will be a fool to miss the opportunity now in his hands — to become a truly international star- actor. He needs to stop obsessing about the Mahabharata, at least for the present. In earlier saner times, Muslims in India were part of the team that produced serials like Ramayana and Mahabharata. That was an inclusive India. Even Naseeruddin Shah has said in a recent intervew (to Faridoon Sharyar) that Janey Bhi Do Yaaron climax would not be possible in today’s toxic climate. And just a while back I read that yet another Rajasthani group is not happy with Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika, wants it banned. Sigh. Is this going to be the pattern?
Aamir needs to shelve Mahabharata for the present. Yesterday I saw the cover of latest Filmfare, at a magazine stall. There is a mention of an Aamir story inside — that he is going to direct Mahabharata.

That is pretty much the tag line thats working for Aamir in China. The popularity of films like 3I, PK, Dangal, SS as well as Satyamev Jayate episodes have together created an unique USP for Aamir.
Not sure where TOH will fall into this scheme. So, not v hopeful about it’s prospects in China. But rest of the world should throw in the best possible numbers, as far as BW is concerned.

stakes are very high LS with TOH – and all 3 songs have been lavishly shot with 3 different coreographers….says a lot….they are not taking any chances with this fantasy-family-adventure-film-for-all-age-group and seeing China’s love for Aamir – things should get better and bigger for TOH. YRF has the biggest money-spinner of their entire career on their hand with TOH. They certainly will go all out for this. 500 Cr in India is a possible shot for TOH and China can be bigger than Dangal. This is a monster of a film. I won’t be surprised if they add lot more gimmicks and techno-wizardry as it is a fantasy film and anything will go there…
I too don’t understand why does Aamir feel need to do out and out Masala stuff in between. May be just a stress breaker and easy money. Plus this time working with Amitabh must be an added bonus.
I am also not a big fan of his Mahabharat obsession. There are so many tales around it. It’s impossible to make everyone happy unless he decides to get some influential Hindu group involved in the making. Still extremely risky and unnecessary.
I think between TOH and Mahabharata, the latter is a better deal in every way. Even if it gets embroiled in controversies, the hype eventually helps the film as we can see in case of Padmaavati. Karni Sena has helped it more than Ranveer’s acting!

@Idea – Sure, TOH will encash the hype around it and minimally be a high grosser. So what? It is the quality that takes a brand forward. Encashing on your reputation has negative impact in the long run.
There are lot of Salman and Golmaal fans who watch Aamir movies and will be delighted with TOH. But there are also a bunch of fans who expect more from him, and it is easy to lose them after D3 or TOH; unless of course you comeback with PK and Dangal and SS.
Personally, I dont see any point in spending 2 years on TOH when age is not on your side. It is not that Victor/YRF is going to deliver a Sholay in this genre – no matter how much money they pour into it.
I also think that TOH is a waste of time and energy for Aamir. He should only produce in his own house in my opinion. But YRF ….. no.
On the other hand, a dream comes true for Aamir. Amitabh first and also the size of the movie. Such opportunities do not come often. The ships in Malta were incredible and really did not look like scenery. What they were doing looked good, but not as good as Dangal. It stayed YRF, but done better than D3. At least that’s what it looked like.

ENT Tracker has SS total at 96+ M$ till Tuesday. It has now crossed 600 cr gross from China itself. Today WW gross will go past 750 cr (3rd bollywood film to do so after PK and Dangal).
Ages ago, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon had grossed $100M in the US, and had been predicted to become a major opening for Chinese movies in the US. However, nothing really clicked after that for the last 2 decades. I cant recall a single Chinese language movie raking it big in the US since then. Sure, there have been some acting opportunities in a few HW releases for the Chinese stars of CTHD. But they never could break the crossover barrier with an original Chinese movie.
But here, the SS run has now proven that Aamir has plastered himself in Chinese hearts/minds. Aamir has truely broken the crossover barrier. This is nothing short of Incredulous.
I think you are not fully aware of the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon phenomenon.
It was directed by Ang Lee, a Taiwanese immigrant to US who studied theater and film production at UIUC and NYU respectively. He struggled for years to make his debut as a film director. He finally got a break to direct some Taiwanese films, which got worldwide acclaim. He then made some highly acclaimed films at Hollywood, before directing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Afterwards Lee shifted back to Hollywood and went on to direct Hulk, Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi, etc.
My point is that Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is not exactly a ‘Chinese’ film. It was masterminded by a director who hardly represented Chinese/Taiwanese film-making. It was more like Slumdog Millionaire (although Boyle was not Indian).
Dangal/SS on the other hand are made by complete Indian film-makers and fully representative of ‘better Bollywood’. Ang Lee did not make another Chinese venture like Crouching Tiger and no other Chinese film became big in States. But expecting Chinese films to crossover to US after Crouching Tiger was unreasonable in the first place.
I am not convinced that ‘regular song-dance-masala commercials’ like TOH is going to work that big in China, despite Aamir’s popularity. If it does, then Salman is going to have a ball in China afterwards.
I agree that regular song-dance masala cannot and will not work. But, the argument is simply for the affinity to the Star. With the string of his successful movies in China, Aamir Khan has become a household name and a Superstar out there. IMHO, it will be this love and affinity for Aamir which will make TOH click.

Again, not to drag this on, but the basic premise here is that Aamir has now created a trust factor amongst the Chinese, very similar to what he achieved over the past 2 decades with Indian audiences. From the Lagaan Oscar nomination onward, Indian audiences took massively to Aamir and every successive thoughtful step of his gave him back huge returns that propelled him to #1. It just so happens that a totally alien audience but with similar socio-economic experiences as Indians, and who can now out-spend Indians 10-to-1, has gotten similarly hooked to these movies. The Chinese appreciation is unsolicited (and humongously lopsided) rewards for that painstaking 2 decade process. He set out to right one boat, and he is coming back with his boat towing a big ship behind it.
Sallu in his wildest dreams cant even think of having something similar, simply bcoz he just does not have the filmography backing him. Which is why Sallu, as well as SRK will remain relegated to the crumbs of an Indian audience. They just did not invest any effort into creating entertaining movies with message for all of 20 years. Sallu/SRK will be mere bystanders to this Chinese phenomenon.
SS is going super strong in China.2.25M$+ even today which means again no drop from yesterday.I thought with strong weekdays it can hit 100M$ on Friday but trending this week has been super strong and it wld 100M$ tommorow itself.It is going to more than 110M$ LT now for sure.
I guess they realize that foreign movies only have limited 4 week runs, so they make a beeline in the last few days due to FOMO. This makes the last week collections rock steady for well liked foreign movies.

What Aamir is achieving in China is phenomenal, really. These are rewards for years of quality cinema.
I just hope that TOH doesn’t hurt his brand there. His socially relevant films with a message and substance have worked. If his next were from AKP, it would have only further strengthened his brand, I am sure. Let’s hope TOH lives up the expectations of his audience there (even if I am not betting on it).
The current stardom of Aamir is something no actor in Bollywood could have ever dreamed of, in the recent past. The sky seems the limit there for him.
One can bet that Aamir’s next projects choices will be hugely influenced by that huge audience of his there. And it only be for the better.

SS has made 21+ M$ in its third week. According to predictions it may add another 15 M$ in fourth week. I think it is foolish of the distributors to not apply for extension after 30 days. It can easily add another 10-15 M$ in its second month even with local competition from Chinese new year.

@LS – The writer has got it right that Chinese movie industry has been in the dumps for a while and that it is slice-of-life films from India (or Aamir Khan) has found flavor with Chinese films. So far.
But this Aamir phenomenon is not propaganda free. The Chinese govt has supported SS thoroughly. They may not do so for every other film from India. I am not sure if they will allow simultaneous release for TOH.
I agree. I am wary about Chinese authorities. Not every Aamir film or Aamir film will get a free pass. I am quite doubtful about TOH working in China beyond his new fan base there.
Anyway here is a report from another Indian in China, this time, for the Hindu newspaper. The writer terms Aamir’s recent winning ways, a charm offensive or charm attack. Ha ha. 😊 But the fact is — it is Aamir’s thoughtful choice of films that has paid off. Aamir has connected to the audience there. Have to give him credit .
Wolf Warrior 2 is a good film in its genre. The politics may be dubious and not to everyone’s taste. It is similar to Rambo filmed in a Michael Bay kind of deal. But is a well made action film with the pacing, action scenes and stunts at good levels. I found it fun and worth the ride. It made nearly $900m and from reports the third part is going to go even much higher.

BB will be interesting. Best content Salman’s movie has had till date. Make or break for him. Aamir had to impress with few movies to Chinese audiences before Dangal happened. BB needs to at least impress the audience there. Aamir has laid a base for him to exploit. People aren’t going to simply ignore a Bollywood movie now. So people will turn up, but I guess not in big numbers. If WOM is good this may do a good 20-25m plus run.

23 out of 26 days, Secret Superstar has topped the Chinese box office and only ONE day in India! 736 CR from China alone – has to count as a bigger success than Dangal in China, given the budget and screen presence of Aamir. Plus it’s not just a front loaded success as it’s trended strongly. Dangal’s special being the FIRST real success of huge magnitude but no one could have put hand on heart and expected $120mm or thereabouts for Secret Superstar.

I am just neutral. I dont care. Salman has already destroyed bollywood cinema by his starpower by getting Eid to Christmas for all for his crappy films. People lost taste for different movies because they wait for his potboilers. Happy that Padmaavat and other films like GA are surviving and making some money. The Aamir Khan starrer Secret Superstar still continues to run in China. Released a while back the Advait Chandan directorial has been ruling the box office across the border maintaining its hold at the box office. Despite a staggered release Secret Superstar has managed to overcome newer releases hitting screens in the subsequent weeks dominating the Chinese market.

Now on its 27th day running Secret Superstar has drawn in a further USD 3.20 million [Rs. 20.46 cr] in China, taking its total collections within this market to a staggering USD 116.83 million [Rs. 747.41 cr]. Interestingly, the business of Secret Superstar which had surpassed the daily collections of Aamir Khan’s previous release Dangal in its first week, dipped in week two. However, the collections of the film on Day 27 in China that are pegged at USD 3.20 million [Rs. 20.46 cr] are comparatively higher than Dangal that had collected USD 1.76 million [Rs. 11.34 cr].
Though the collections of Secret Superstar on Day 27 are higher than the collections of Dangal on its 27th day, the total box office collections of the latter that managed to draw in USD 161.09 million [Rs. 1030.57 cr] are far ahead of Secret Superstar’s business that has collected USD 116.83 million [Rs. 747.41 cr] till date.
I informed here yesterday that SS wld be in China till 26th but that was an unconfirmed news but Gavin today has confirmed it is true.Weekend prediction is 0.07M$ only.She is saying it can get a full extension till 18th Mardepending in how it performs on weekdays but it is highly unlikely.Today only half of shows were running which costed 1M$ today to SS.

The film has surpassed Aamir’s previous blockbuster Dangal in terms of the opening day collection. Secret Superstar earned a sum of 174 crores in its opening weekend breaking records at the box office.
Despite the small budget and limited run at the Indian box office, Secret Superstar is the third highest film only after Baahubali: The Conclusion and Dangal.
Aamir Khan is also the only actor to have three films in the 750 crore club with PK, Dangal and Secret Superstar. The actor also dominated the all-time Top-10 highest grossing films with Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal and Secret Superstar.
I’m happy about the extension at all. It is a privilege in China.
We should wait a few days, when the hype around the new films abates. SeSu has had a long leg so far, even though we will no longer see $ 2 million daily. $ 120 million is possible in the end – or not?
Not sure if SS will find its leg again by the time the new year releases fade away. Monster Hunt 2 does look like a chinese BB2. And the other new releases are also doing well.

But the unbeatable run at the Chinese box office has now come to end. This Aamir Khan movie has earned more than Rs 700 crore in China in a month’s time. In fact, by Day 31 of the movie’s release in China, Secret Superstar had earned $117.66 million which is around Rs. 759.49 crore. On Day 31, the Aamir Khan starrer minted only $0.04 million or Rs. 0.25 crore. It was on Day 28 when Secret Superstar crossed the huge figure of Rs 750 crore in China.
With a flurry of Chinese movies and Holywood movies hitting the Chinese screens, the movie’s success at the box office is finally slowing down. However, with less than a crore to go, the movie may just end up earning a round figure of Rs 760 crore. According to Bollywood Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie has earned a huge amount. These figures are till date February 18. Taran Adarsh wrote: “#SecretSuperstar packs a HUMONGOUS TOTAL in 31 days in China… Total till 18 Feb 2018: $ 117.66 mn [₹ 759.92 cr]… REMARKABLE!” on Twitter.
Along with Aamir Khan, Secret Superstar stars Dangal star Zaira Wasim can be in the lead role. Wasim plays the role of Insia a young girl who wishes to be a singer. Insia fights all odds to become a famous singer. Aamir Khan plays the role of a fading singer Shakti Kumar. It is Aamir’s character that helps Insia make her dream come true. The film also deals with sensitive topics like domestic violence. With massive success at the Chinese box office, Secret Superstar is Aamir Khan’s second big hit after 2016 superhit movie Dangal. Till date, Dangal has claimed the top spot as the highest-grossing Indian film in China and made over Rs. 1,200 crore.
Some good news will come at any time. Can’t say much but I think 2018 is another important year for Indian movie, for both Aamir Khan & Salman Khan. Hope AK can keep doing good business & SK can become the next superstar in China.

Without killing your hopes, a lot of this success is down to visibility of Aamir Khan’s films in China. Without the success of 3 Idiots, PK, Dangal and SS India had very little to shout about.
BB is Salman’s best bet and it’s a huge success. But try to understand why before comparing it debut vs. debut. Even your beloved BOI (the one you quote as truth so often) has exposed the BB marketing campaign.
Alas I don’t expect you to get it or be grateful to anyone except Salman Khan.

I think there may be some truth about Aamir’s claim that emotional chord of Chinese audience is similar to Indians. BB seems to have made some emotional connect given how it is performing in the week days.
LT prediction as of now is 42M$ by Maoyan which is pretty underwhelming.Movies getting 9.7 rating break out after first or second day.Coco had around 1.7M$ opening day which is similar to or a bit more than Bajrangi’s real value opening (considering OD was holiday for Bajrangi) with 9.6 rating just broke out after day 1 and ended with 187M$ LT.Unique case of Bajrangi is mostly due to it’s practically zero face value in China and it got even here mostly due to the visibility for Indian movies now created by Aamir movies.
It seems WOM is bad for BP in China.Maoyan rating started at 7.7 and is currently at 8.1 which is pretty bad.Bajrangi wld gain due to this and can get to 50M$ now in China.Anything less than 8.5 is pretty bad and 8.8-9 is around average.

Secret Superstar become Highest Worldwide Grosser of 2017

Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has become the highest worldwide grosser of 2017 after its China release. The film has overtaken Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai to claim the top spot. Secret Superstar did not perform up to the expectations in the domestic market however it has done wonders in China.
The list is followed by Golmaal Again which managed to over 300 crores. Shahrukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Tubelight claim the 4th and 5th spot respectively. There is also Baahubali 2 which collected over 800 crores only from the Hindi version in worldwide.
This is actually a very rare scenario where the top Hindi net grosser of the year belongs to Tiger Zinda Hai while the highest overseas and worldwide grosser is Secret Superstar. But that has happened only after the release in China where 99% of the Hindi films are not released. Meanwhile, there is Baahubali 2 too which is the top grosser in net and worldwide business if we consider the dubbed Hindi version.
Secret Superstar and Tiger Zinda Hai are also among the highest worldwide grossers of all time. They have replaced Bajirao Mastani and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Padmaavat is expected to enter into the top 10 soon which will exclude Dilwale from the list.

Tommorow Bajrangi wld be crossed and SS wld become the 4th highest Indian and 3rd highest BW WW grosser of all time.Today wld close at around 3.1M$Total in China after today wld be 75.75M$ approx.
3.4+3.25+3.1=9.75M$ in weekdays of week 2 so far.
Tommorow there wld be a drop as ‘The Greatest Showman’ is releasng tommorow in China.I believe it wld do around 2.5M$ tommorow.
On Friday if it can manage 2.75-3M$ then 3rd weekend can be around 12M$ and then in all probability it can cross 100M$ in China which wld be a major milestone as such a feat has only been achieved by 2 films so far ie.BB2 in India and Dangal in China.

The Greatest Showman has been critically slammed, but has been doing well at BO everywhere it has released till now. Not sure how it will fare in China. Should open well due to presence of Hugh Jackman.
SS has crossed 75 M$ and surpassed Jumanji in China. Dont think The Greatest Showman will effect SS, even if it gets accepted.
And SS has now crossed 600 cr WW gross.
Thats the end of the daily dose of bad news for Salman, SRK and BOI fans.

Thursday prediction is 2.8M$,Fri is 3.1M$ and Saturday is at 5M$ with no.1 spot on all 3 days as well.SS has already topped China BO for 11 days inc. today while Dangal topped for 15 days.
If SS indeed collects as per prediction 100M$ wld be crossed for sure.

Yes, number of shows will decrease but avg per screen may increase. If predictions are as high as 11 M$ for third weekend, then I am hopeful of 9-10 M$ weekend haul which will put SS on track for 100 M$ finish.
Forever Young has done 100 M$ with similar trending.

Sun prediction has not come but going by norms Weekend prediction by maoyan is around 12.5M$ and i believe it can do around 12M$ in 3rd weekend and LT finish cld be bw 102-105M$.Strange thing is that for early prediction they r placing SS at no.1 for all thu,fri and sat ahead of TGS which means it’s maoyan rating is low and they r expecting it to crash on sat itself just like maze runner did during last weekend.

Bollywood’s latest hit film “Secret Superstar” outperformed American action films and homegrown historical dramas in China’s box office last week, once again demonstrating the Middle Kingdom’s attachment to Indian musicals.
The film grossed $38 million and rose above three Hollywood movies, reaching $65.4 million after 10 days, according to film consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
The movie stars Aamir Khan, beloved in China, and focuses on a teenage Muslim girl overcoming hardships as she becomes a singer. Khan has more than 1 million followers on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, earning him the nickname “Uncle Mi.”
His previous family drama “Dangal,” set a record in China last year for a non-Hollywood foreign film. It drew nearly $190 million in ticket sales.
Chinese period drama holdover “Forever Young” earned $26.6 million, accumulating $95 million after 17 days.
The only new release of the week, 20th Century Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” opened with $22.7 million in its first three days.
The sci-fi action film is the third and final installment in the “Maze Runner” series, which stars Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario.
Lionsgate’s family drama “Wonder,” based on the novel of the same name, earned $9.6 million in its second week of release, grossing $18.2 million after 10 days.
The film, which tells the story of a boy with a facial deformity, failed to draw fans despite the presence of Julia Roberts, who is popular in China.
Another 20th Century Fox release 3D animation movie “Ferdinand” added $9 million for a total of $18.5 million in ticket sales.

SS has crossed Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s worldwide gross today. After TZH, Sultan and now Bajrangi Bhaijaan, all the highest grossers of Salman has been beaten by a 15 cr budget film with Aamir in supporting role.
I dont think anything like this has happened before, even when Raj Kapoor became famous in Russia or when SRK broke open in NRI markets or in Germany.

Personally think now TOH will work (minimum massive opening) in China now. It’s stardom out there for him, they are turning up to see him especially if they are dancing to that ridiculous song sexy baliye.
Ghajini (female fan following will cry loads), RDB (social message – easy winner), QSQT (same reason for Ghajini). I wouldn’t go beyond that. Sarforosh is an Indian/Pakistan story, MP and Lagaan I doubt they will like.
If Bajrangi Bhaijaan works (say $10mm) than that is really it for Salman in China. Nothing else will work at that level.
Beyond that I think China will need to be wooed by a star like they have to Aamir before they start loving Bollywood films the way we do.

Bajrangi’s Weibo page is using a video of Aamir Khan’s recommendation to promote the film . I actually liked Mangal Pandey a lot, found AK…sexy. The Holi song, the Rasika song, Aamir emerging out of the water in an initial scene like a BoDerek….wooh!☺️
I feel Mangal Pandey could work. It had its negative points, but I loved its unique soundtrack and the picturization of the songs. And it was far more historically accurate than Bajirao Mastani.

caught up on Mela. It was a commercial potboiler on par with the best of Aamir’s competitors(Rowdy Rathore/Dabangg/Chennai Express). Going by Aamir standards, it was a massive let down. If Aamir remakes Mela, it could do 200 cr in today’s scenario.

SS has already had an amazing run in China with almost 80 M$ (500+ cr) coming in 2 weeks. The only point of interest remaining now, is whether it can cross 100 M$. For that it will need 10 M$ this weekend, which may be difficult due to a lot of new releases.

Aamir has heavily promoted Bollywood’s song and dance routine during his SS promotions in Beijing this time. We have seen videos of fans dancing to sexy baliye and what not. But I still doubt whether our song and dance movies will work there in large. Aamir perhaps wanted his chinese fans to prepare for TOH’s disco dhamaka.
BO opening will be there, but wont count on a 100 M$ total for TOH in China.
Also, I doubt if the success of Dangal and SS can be attributed to a higher ratio of female audience in China than in India. Maybe the Chinese male audience is more tolerant and interested in the concepts of gender equality and female empowerment, than in India or in NRI markets.
It is the same movie being shown to the Indian audience and the Chinese audience. But the reactions have been drastically different. For the Indian audience, Advait has perhaps made a film much ahead of its time. SS will likely have better shelf life than many of Aamir’s ‘Indian’ blockbusters.

Anyway you dice it or splice it, SS collections dont put Indian audience in a good light. India may be OK to see a father treating his daughters as sons at this point, but it is far off from a society that encourages its females to sort out their own problems. I am sure Padman will do much better in India than SS, mainly due to a male star providing sanitary solution here.
And issues close to home like domestic violence are often more acceptable when shown in the backdrop of a foreign society.

I think largely the movie did better than the movie was purely due to Aamir Khan in India as well overseas. But in China Aamir Khan is like God so there it is doing like a commercial masala movie…
I dont think there is any issue with Indian audience in any way. After seeing the movie I feel it has definitely done more than it can in India and it is purely due to Aamir. Remove him it would have struggled to cross 25 crs in India.

Yes this I agree with. He is behaving like a masala commercial star out there. It’s these videos – it’s like Justin Bieber or when Hrithik swept the Indian audience in 2000. Hrithik followed with huge initials but average films. The bar is a little lower here for Aamir. My gut feel is China could tolerate a song and dance film with him if for example he dies in it or its gut wrenchingly emotional. Then you really need a string of films to go in and eventually cross border films.
The US won’t spread like this – only if it’s Oscar worthy.
I’m speaking more from the view point of business and how to grow it.

Other overseas business is still Indian audience. There does not seem to be much difference between the reaction from NRI (non resident indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis/srilankans) or from Indians in India. But comparatively SS business has been better in NRI markets than in India.
Anyways, a film does not do 100 M$ because of a star in a supporting role. That is a convenient and naive take to ignore the obvious. The film itself has worked in the Chinese market in a big way.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly should all be exported – it is a prime opportunity to test. The reality is China will have more potential than the US for business if someone follows Aamir and soon. His shell life is finite given his age he won’t go into his 60’s doing this.
It’s like a toddler trying new foods. The first taste needs to be the right temperature, texture, taste and then they will try something again. Eventually they will not like something but they’ll get use to Indian food.
Obviously Aamir is leading the charge but it’s possible to ‘convert’ more success. Others will reap the benefits too.

I think the word I am looking for is he has a lot of leverage right now. And with that the ‘right’ thing is to spread it back into the Indian film industry. But like a toddler should know good and bad foods. China should see the worst of Aamir films too and if they can still tolerate aspects of it – it’s a genuine non NRI market that can accept Indian cinema regularly.
The problems are the major stars who would want a slice of the pie are all 40+ or 50+. You really need strong young actors or actresses to make a breakthrough.

I think him becoming bigger and bigger has a direct correlation with the quality of his films. In fact, I suspect it is a casual relationship. After PK, Dangal and SS he is in a position where he can perhaps open a regular bollywood commercial like TOH to 25 M$ in this market. I don’t know what these reporters think.They seems to be totally dumb.Dangal had a historic trending in China which was probably one of the greatest ever .SS has had a great trending as well as it wld do 4x of it’s opening weekend.TLJ had a similar weekend as SS and it wld wrap up under 45M$ LT.

SS has done better in China than Hollywood imports like Star Wars, Jumanji, Greatest Showman, etc etc. That itself is something.
Anyways, if we compare SS box office with Dangal, then one has to account for the budget differential. Dangal was 70 cr budget film that did 2000-2100 cr WW (~30X). And SS is 15 cr budget that will do roughly 800 cr WW (more than 50X). SS is the bigger winner considering its minimal investment.

I have been a silent reader so far and love to read the opinions here.
Friendly and knowledgeable, that is rare to find.
Thank you, SeSu in China is now a separate topic.
Think, the film is far ahead of its time in India. Most population groups could find reasons to avoid the film. The few people who went to cinema loved the movie. Me too. A complex, multi-layered story, handled with great sensitivity. I saw SeSu in Zurich (Switzerland) and to my delight 30% Chinese were in the room. That was not the case with Dangal yet.
Nevertheless, the success in China surprises me. It is a small movie. Aamir has little screentime and it is not easy to go through this story emotionally. I would have enjoyed over $ 50 million and thought it was possible. But that …. A good opening, that’s because of Aamir. But the movie is strong. If the weather had been better last weekend, we would already touch the $ 100 million. But no matter when, it’s a very big deal.
I am very happy that the film in China receives the love he did not get in India. The courage and effort of the creators are appreciated.

I’ve lived in Munich for 6 months back in 2005. It’s an NRI market. To watch Indian films I had to join an Indian club/society. A German or 2 might be fans but there are a lot of Indians working there from companies like Genpact & Infosys. It’s a big scam to suggest he has a huge native German following.
Obviously I don’t know all of Germany but Munich is a major city for financial sector in general.
The UK it’s possible he might have a non Asian base but even here it will be miniscule.

I have to answer above, aamirsaurabh, because it does not work under your question.
In the cinema SRK films are mostly NRIs, at least 50 to 80%, depending on the film. Since I have to travel abroad for Aamir’s films, I can say that I’m usually the only European in the audience. So it’s a difference. SRK’s German audience is mainly female and between 30 and 60 years old.
The German speaking area is SRK zone (there are still a few fans of Salman and Akshay). After LAGAAN opened the doors and attracted attention, it was SRK who walked through the door. Aamir made no films for years and is still unknown here today. Indian films here are Bollywood and that’s SRK – because only his films ran in infinite repetitions on TV. To come out as a fan of Indian / Hindi films is to make a fool of yourself. The image in the mind is very one-sided here: romance, kitsch, trash, dance, outstretched arms and a lot of overacting and exaggeration.
When I show people movies like TZP, dhobi ghat, Lunchbox or Dangal, they can hardly believe that such works exist. They say: but that’s not like Bollywood, that’s really good movies ….

Its the same in US too outside the Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/SriLankan communities.
I think an overdose of Bollywood commercials releasing in China will also result in a similar feeling among the Chinese audience regarding Indian films at large.
Aamir took a long break after Lagaan Oscar hype and that helped SRK to cement his position not just in India but in the overseas too. aamirsaurabh, it is tiny compared to India and China. Germany has only 82 million inhabitants and a relatively high proportion of older people. Indian movies are only available in a few cinemas in big cities and not nationwide in the normal program. There are also few performances and no weeks of running. Overall, a market that is negligible to ww.

Very regrettable that it is the same in other countries. I joined only a few years ago. Before Aamir’s first film, it was inconceivable for me to see a Bollywood movie. What I saw while zapping on TV frightened me off. I forbade my daughter to see such a movie – which we laugh about today. The Chinese should think carefully about which films are shown and choose wisely. There are so many beautiful things to discover and today I am very happy to have found the world of Indian films.

Tom don’t agree it’s a small market.If my mind serves me right Avatar did around 160M$ in Germany.I am attaching the yearly BO list of 2017.Even the movie at no.100 has done around 1.5M$.TLJ did 81M$ there.So how can a movie doing mere 0.3-0.5M$ be considered good in any case?I think average TP there wld be around 5$ if not more.Even on 5$ TP, admissions r hardly 60k to 100k.This is not crossover in any sense whatsoever as i don’t think more than 10k native Germans wld have watched SRK’s biggest Grossers in Germany.

In comparison,Secret Superstar was watched by 1.6million Chinese on day 1 and cum. total admission count wld be around 22-23 million and it’s safe to assume 99% of those admissions were of local native Chinese.Dangal had 43.5 million admissions in China.
In China 1/33 ppl watched Dangal and 1/60 ppl watched SS while in Germany 1/8200 ppl watched SRK’s biggest grosser(i think it’s HNY).
Penetration of SRK in Germany is not even 1% of what Aamir has in China.Not to forgot population of China is around 18 times of Germany.

Since it is Chinese BO-related here, just wanted to share about Wolf Warrior 2 here. Was released last year and did nearly $900M in China.
I watched it a few months back (with English sub-titles) and found it impressive, especially when it came to the action scenes, special effects and its pacing is fast and relentless.
Yet to see Bollywood reach anywhere near that level in terms of action scenes and stunts.

These Chinese figures are just incredible. Nothing else in other ‘foreign’ markets is remotely comparable. This is greater than everything else in this sense by an order of magnitude. To repeat myself the real scandal is that this story (or Dangal before it) isn’t the entertainment news lead week after week. Whatever else anyone else has done in the US or UK or wherever it’s light years removed from this. Aamir should release Ghajini in China. Even 3I would work hugely today.

Aamir is like Usain Bolt in China right now. Doing a 4 by 100m all on his own. Soon it’s up to others to make this a long term market. It’s a missed opportunity if it remains only for Aamir’s films. I wish Bajrangi Bhaijaan the best on this score. It’s good news for Indian cinema all-round then.

I have honestly felt that SS fared poorly( to an extent) because of a joint boycott designed to affect both Aamir and Zaira. In fact on twitter the other day, one guy said so — that he wished to watch it but stayed away due to Zaira. I also understand that Zaira is getting plenty of venom on social media pages from the likes of Shefali Vaidya and Madhu Kishwar , since Vistara Airlines insists that Zaira’s accusation against a co- passenger is false.
Plus, the competing Diwali film was obviously another factor.

@IdeaUnique — As you say, Aamir has to change his way of working. He cannot sit on one film for two years. He will be a fool to miss the opportunity now in his hands — to become a truly international star- actor. He needs to stop obsessing about the Mahabharata, at least for the present. In earlier saner times, Muslims in India were part of the team that produced serials like Ramayana and Mahabharata. That was an inclusive India. Even Naseeruddin Shah has said in a recent intervew (to Faridoon Sharyar) that Janey Bhi Do Yaaron climax would not be possible in today’s toxic climate. And just a while back I read that yet another Rajasthani group is not happy with Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika, wants it banned. Sigh. Is this going to be the pattern?
Aamir needs to shelve Mahabharata for the present. Yesterday I saw the cover of latest Filmfare, at a magazine stall. There is a mention of an Aamir story inside — that he is going to direct Mahabharata.
Aamir — all we wish is to watch you ON the big screen, once in twelve months.
Somebody pass on this message to the man, if possible. I know a few others who agree with me.

That is pretty much the tag line thats working for Aamir in China. The popularity of films like 3I, PK, Dangal, SS as well as Satyamev Jayate episodes have together created an unique USP for Aamir.
Not sure where TOH will fall into this scheme. So, not v hopeful about it’s prospects in China. But rest of the world should throw in the best possible numbers, as far as BW is concerned.

stakes are very high LS with TOH – and all 3 songs have been lavishly shot with 3 different coreographers….says a lot….they are not taking any chances with this fantasy-family-adventure-film-for-all-age-group and seeing China’s love for Aamir – things should get better and bigger for TOH. YRF has the biggest money-spinner of their entire career on their hand with TOH. They certainly will go all out for this. 500 Cr in India is a possible shot for TOH and China can be bigger than Dangal. This is a monster of a film. I won’t be surprised if they add lot more gimmicks and techno-wizardry as it is a fantasy film and anything will go there…

I too don’t understand why does Aamir feel need to do out and out Masala stuff in between. May be just a stress breaker and easy money. Plus this time working with Amitabh must be an added bonus.
I am also not a big fan of his Mahabharat obsession. There are so many tales around it. It’s impossible to make everyone happy unless he decides to get some influential Hindu group involved in the making. Still extremely risky and unnecessary.

I think between TOH and Mahabharata, the latter is a better deal in every way. Even if it gets embroiled in controversies, the hype eventually helps the film as we can see in case of Padmaavati. Karni Sena has helped it more than Ranveer’s acting!

@Idea – Sure, TOH will encash the hype around it and minimally be a high grosser. So what? It is the quality that takes a brand forward. Encashing on your reputation has negative impact in the long run.
There are lot of Salman and Golmaal fans who watch Aamir movies and will be delighted with TOH. But there are also a bunch of fans who expect more from him, and it is easy to lose them after D3 or TOH; unless of course you comeback with PK and Dangal and SS.
Personally, I dont see any point in spending 2 years on TOH when age is not on your side. It is not that Victor/YRF is going to deliver a Sholay in this genre – no matter how much money they pour into it.

On the other hand, a dream comes true for Aamir. Amitabh first and also the size of the movie. Such opportunities do not come often. The ships in Malta were incredible and really did not look like scenery. What they were doing looked good, but not as good as Dangal. It stayed YRF, but done better than D3. At least that’s what it looked like.

Holyshit maoyan is predicting 2.15,2.08 and 2.4M$ for next 3 days.
Friday 2.4M$ means weekend around 9-9.5M$.It might even cross 110M$LT.LT prediction now by maoyan is 724M Yuans which is roughly 114M$.

Monster Hunt2 are releasing on 16th.There wld be no showtimes for SS after 16th.It wldn’t do anything after 16th and distributers wouldn’t apply for extension.Monkey King (14th)and Detective Chinatown2(16th) too are releasing and it is Chinese new year and only local movies get showtimes at that time.Dangal got 165M$ in first month and SS wld fall around 50M$ short if u consider only 1 month period.

Ages ago, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon had grossed $100M in the US, and had been predicted to become a major opening for Chinese movies in the US. However, nothing really clicked after that for the last 2 decades. I cant recall a single Chinese language movie raking it big in the US since then. Sure, there have been some acting opportunities in a few HW releases for the Chinese stars of CTHD. But they never could break the crossover barrier with an original Chinese movie.
But here, the SS run has now proven that Aamir has plastered himself in Chinese hearts/minds. Aamir has truely broken the crossover barrier. This is nothing short of Incredulous.
Just wait n watch, TOH will be massive in China!

I think you are not fully aware of the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon phenomenon.
It was directed by Ang Lee, a Taiwanese immigrant to US who studied theater and film production at UIUC and NYU respectively. He struggled for years to make his debut as a film director. He finally got a break to direct some Taiwanese films, which got worldwide acclaim. He then made some highly acclaimed films at Hollywood, before directing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Afterwards Lee shifted back to Hollywood and went on to direct Hulk, Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi, etc.
My point is that Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is not exactly a ‘Chinese’ film. It was masterminded by a director who hardly represented Chinese/Taiwanese film-making. It was more like Slumdog Millionaire (although Boyle was not Indian).
Dangal/SS on the other hand are made by complete Indian film-makers and fully representative of ‘better Bollywood’. Ang Lee did not make another Chinese venture like Crouching Tiger and no other Chinese film became big in States. But expecting Chinese films to crossover to US after Crouching Tiger was unreasonable in the first place.
I am not convinced that ‘regular song-dance-masala commercials’ like TOH is going to work that big in China, despite Aamir’s popularity. If it does, then Salman is going to have a ball in China afterwards.

With the string of his successful movies in China, Aamir Khan has become a household name and a Superstar out there. IMHO, it will be this love and affinity for Aamir which will make TOH click.

Again, not to drag this on, but the basic premise here is that Aamir has now created a trust factor amongst the Chinese, very similar to what he achieved over the past 2 decades with Indian audiences. From the Lagaan Oscar nomination onward, Indian audiences took massively to Aamir and every successive thoughtful step of his gave him back huge returns that propelled him to #1. It just so happens that a totally alien audience but with similar socio-economic experiences as Indians, and who can now out-spend Indians 10-to-1, has gotten similarly hooked to these movies. The Chinese appreciation is unsolicited (and humongously lopsided) rewards for that painstaking 2 decade process. He set out to right one boat, and he is coming back with his boat towing a big ship behind it.
Sallu in his wildest dreams cant even think of having something similar, simply bcoz he just does not have the filmography backing him. SS is going super strong in China.2.25M$+ even today which means again no drop from yesterday.I thought with strong weekdays it can hit 100M$ on Friday but trending this week has been super strong and it wld 100M$ tommorow itself.It is going to more than 110M$ LT now for sure.

What Aamir is achieving in China is phenomenal, really. These are rewards for years of quality cinema.
I just hope that TOH doesn’t hurt his brand there. His socially relevant films with a message and substance have worked. If his next were from AKP, it would have only further strengthened his brand, I am sure. Let’s hope TOH lives up the expectations of his audience there (even if I am not betting on it).
The current stardom of Aamir is something no actor in Bollywood could have ever dreamed of, in the recent past. The sky seems the limit there for him.
One can bet that Aamir’s next projects choices will be hugely influenced by that huge audience of his there. And it only be for the better.

It is likely to find favors with the Chinese in view of current geopolitical scenarios and how Chinese are currently engaged in resisting the American/ Western clutches to their global aspirations.

SS has made 21+ M$ in its third week. According to predictions it may add another 15 M$ in fourth week. I think it is foolish of the distributors to not apply for extension after 30 days. It can easily add another 10-15 M$ in its second month even with local competition from Chinese new year.

I m hearing weather in China is very bad from yesterday.
That is y it did 2.56M$ yesterday and today it wld hardly do 3.5M$.Weekend wld be hardly 9M$.Now LT wld be max.115M$.It cld have had collected 125-130M$ if Weather was better.
Chilling weather has cost SS atleast 10M$ if not more.I m not only talking abt this weekend.Everyday night shows r hardly collecting plus even during second weekend weather was very bad.

@LS – The writer has got it right that Chinese movie industry has been in the dumps for a while and that it is slice-of-life films from India (or Aamir Khan) has found flavor with Chinese films. So far.
But this Aamir phenomenon is not propaganda free. The Chinese govt has supported SS thoroughly. They may not do so for every other film from India. I am not sure if they will allow simultaneous release for TOH.

Anyway here is a report from another Indian in China, this time, for the Hindu newspaper. The writer terms Aamir’s recent winning ways, a charm offensive or charm attack. Ha ha. 😊 But the fact is — it is Aamir’s thoughtful choice of films that has paid off. Aamir has connected to the audience there. Have to give him credit .

Wolf Warrior 2 is a good film in its genre. The politics may be dubious and not to everyone’s taste. It is similar to Rambo filmed in a Michael Bay kind of deal. But is a well made action film with the pacing, action scenes and stunts at good levels. I found it fun and worth the ride. It made nearly $900m and from reports the third part is going to go even much higher.

BB will be interesting. Best content Salman’s movie has had till date. Make or break for him. Aamir had to impress with few movies to Chinese audiences before Dangal happened. BB needs to at least impress the audience there. Aamir has laid a base for him to exploit. People aren’t going to simply ignore a Bollywood movie now. So people will turn up, but I guess not in big numbers. If WOM is good this may do a good 20-25m plus run.

23 out of 26 days, Secret Superstar has topped the Chinese box office and only ONE day in India! 736 CR from China alone – has to count as a bigger success than Dangal in China, given the budget and screen presence of Aamir. Plus it’s not just a front loaded success as it’s trended strongly. Dangal’s special being the FIRST real success of huge magnitude but no one could have put hand on heart and expected $120mm or thereabouts for Secret Superstar.

Livewire i know u don’t know anything abt China.Don’t go by this bullshitIt is not India.Screen reporting is not done in China plus showcount is not predecided as it is changed till last moment depending upon various factors most important of them which is advance.Bajrangi’s advance is lukewarm to say the least infact it’s outright disastrous.SS had 5k$ advance just after 1 day of advance opening while for Bajrangi it is less than 200$ after 7 days of advance.Plus biggest of their releases inc. Monster Hunt2 wld be running in their 3rd week and wld take most of the showcount.If status advance remains like this it is unlikely to get many shows.

Secret Superstar is now at no.67 on all time list of highest grossers in China.It wld go a couple of places higher tommorow.750cr crossed as well.8-9cr may come tommorow.27 consecutive sets of 2M$+ happened and tommorow it wld fall below 2M$. Released a while back the Advait Chandan directorial has been ruling the box office across the border maintaining its hold at the box office. Despite a staggered release Secret Superstar has managed to overcome newer releases hitting screens in the subsequent weeks dominating the Chinese market.

Now on its 27th day running Secret Superstar has drawn in a further USD 3.20 million [Rs. 20.46 cr] in China, taking its total collections within this market to a staggering USD 116.83 million [Rs. 747.41 cr]. Interestingly, the business of Secret Superstar which had surpassed the daily collections of Aamir Khan’s previous release Dangal in its first week, dipped in week two. However, the collections of the film on Day 27 in China that are pegged at USD 3.20 million [Rs. 20.46 cr] are comparatively higher than Dangal that had collected USD 1.76 million [Rs. 11.34 cr].
Though the collections of Secret Superstar on Day 27 are higher than the collections of Dangal on its 27th day, the total box office collections of the latter that managed to draw in USD 161.09 million [Rs. 1030.57 cr] are far ahead of Secret Superstar’s business that has collected USD 116.83 million [Rs. 747.41 cr] till date.

Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has crossed the 750 crore mark in China and with this he has become the only actor to achieve the benchmark. Post the Dangal phenomena, Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has cemented his position in this market for a long time now.
Over the years Aamir Khan has been synonymous with good cinema. While the actor has broken records with some of the biggest budget films like Ghajini, 3 idiots, PK, Dangal. It is his smallest project Secret Superstar that has made the most impact.
With screen time of nearly 20 minutes, Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has gone ahead to break records internationally.
Made on a modest budget of 25 crores, Secret Superstar has minted over 750 crores in China. The movie currently stands at the grand total of USD $ 117.61 million [750.69 crores].
The film has surpassed Aamir’s previous blockbuster Dangal in terms of the opening day collection. Secret Superstar earned a sum of 174 crores in its opening weekend breaking records at the box office.
Despite the small budget and limited run at the Indian box office, Secret Superstar is the third highest film only after Baahubali: The Conclusion and Dangal.
Aamir Khan is also the only actor to have three films in the 750 crore club with PK, Dangal and Secret Superstar. The actor also dominated the all-time Top-10 highest grossing films with Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal and Secret Superstar.

On day 29, SS is running on 50-60 screens while Monster Hunt 2 is going to make 100+ M$ in a single day. The extension is not going to help SS.

We should wait a few days, when the hype around the new films abates. SeSu has had a long leg so far, even though we will no longer see $ 2 million daily. $ 120 million is possible in the end – or not?

Footfalls of movies in China.SS almost 2.5cr in China.Around 4Lacs footfalls after the expiry of license for Dangal.Dangal’s final footfalls were 4.35cr in China.

Monster Hunt2 has an average WOM.Detective Chinatown having great WOM is catching up with MH2 and shld beat it tommorow.Operation red sea is having an extraordinary WOM as well plus Bonnie bear is there as well with great WOM.Very bad signs now for Bajrangi.Add to this Black Panther is there as well which wld release one week after Bajrangi.Bajrangi shld wrap under 10M$.

May be.But after Dangal and SS now there is a visibility for non-Aamir Indian movies in China which was not there earlier.If it wld have released before Dangal it wld have hardly done 1M$ but situation is a bit different now.Final advance and Opening day wld give a clear idea but 10M$ is not truely ruled out.

Secret Superstar Box Office collection: Aamir Khan strikes ‘Humongous’ blow
Released in October 2017, Aamir Khan, Zaira Wasim starrer, Secret Superstar may not have received the kind of response they were hoping for at box office in India, but in China, the movie has wreaked havoc at the China box office and made mincemeat of the competition. But the unbeatable run at the Chinese box office has now come to end. This Aamir Khan movie has earned more than Rs 700 crore in China in a month’s time. In fact, by Day 31 of the movie’s release in China, Secret Superstar had earned $117.66 million which is around Rs. 759.49 crore. On Day 31, the Aamir Khan starrer minted only $0.04 million or Rs. 0.25 crore. It was on Day 28 when Secret Superstar crossed the huge figure of Rs 750 crore in China.
With a flurry of Chinese movies and Holywood movies hitting the Chinese screens, the movie’s success at the box office is finally slowing down. However, with less than a crore to go, the movie may just end up earning a round figure of Rs 760 crore. According to Bollywood Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie has earned a huge amount. These figures are till date February 18. Taran Adarsh wrote: “#SecretSuperstar packs a HUMONGOUS TOTAL in 31 days in China… Total till 18 Feb 2018: $ 117.66 mn [₹ 759.92 cr]… REMARKABLE!” on Twitter.
Along with Aamir Khan, Secret Superstar stars Dangal star Zaira Wasim can be in the lead role. Wasim plays the role of Insia a young girl who wishes to be a singer. Insia fights all odds to become a famous singer. Aamir Khan plays the role of a fading singer Shakti Kumar. It is Aamir’s character that helps Insia make her dream come true. The film also deals with sensitive topics like domestic violence. With massive success at the Chinese box office, Secret Superstar is Aamir Khan’s second big hit after 2016 superhit movie Dangal. Till date, Dangal has claimed the top spot as the highest-grossing Indian film in China and made over Rs. 1,200 crore.

I think they should gun for a TZP release asap. And if TOH runs successfully in China, they can then push for Lagaan and RDB as they all share the anti-British sentiments.
Sarfarosh will probably not get release permit from Chinese govt as it is a blatantly anti-Paki film (opposite of BB).

The difference is not much. Maybe some people may work from home on tuesdays rather than on mondays after finishing all the urgent work on mondays. And there are houswives and students too who dont have any strict rules to adhere to.

Bajrangi prediction has now been reduced to 37.5M$(from 52M$ yesterday).Don’t know what happened today as today’s pred has been crossed.I think they were earlier giving pred based on very high maoyan rating but it didn’t performed at insane level considering it’s super high rating.Plus may be BP’s early feedback might be very good plus one more new release might also be getting good feedback.After all this they might have reviewed.With such ratings movies set the BO on fire but Bajrangi has not yet hit top 3 anyday leave alone topping the BO.

Without killing your hopes, a lot of this success is down to visibility of Aamir Khan’s films in China. Without the success of 3 Idiots, PK, Dangal and SS India had very little to shout about.
BB is Salman’s best bet and it’s a huge success. But try to understand why before comparing it debut vs. debut. Even your beloved BOI (the one you quote as truth so often) has exposed the BB marketing campaign.
Alas I don’t expect you to get it or be grateful to anyone except Salman Khan.

Interestingly Dangal, SS, BB – all had a small girl as one of the main protagonists – so is it the female-centric themes which are doing well? Aamir factor is understood – so the real test will be any other theme-based bw film releasing there….TOH will be a good case-study. Hindi Medium will be a disaster there.

LT prediction as of now is 42M$ by Maoyan which is pretty underwhelming.Movies getting 9.7 rating break out after first or second day.Coco had around 1.7M$ opening day which is similar to or a bit more than Bajrangi’s real value opening (considering OD was holiday for Bajrangi) with 9.6 rating just broke out after day 1 and ended with 187M$ LT.Unique case of Bajrangi is mostly due to it’s practically zero face value in China and it got even here mostly due to the visibility for Indian movies now created by Aamir movies.

It seems WOM is bad for BP in China.Maoyan rating started at 7.7 and is currently at 8.1 which is pretty bad.Bajrangi wld gain due to this and can get to 50M$ now in China.Anything less than 8.5 is pretty bad and 8.8-9 is around average.
