Pari, the rest of the box office

  1. Despite quite a few positives, PARI also comes with a baggage of some serious drawbacks. One of the major problems with the film is that it has a very slow pace and a weak first half. Though there are series of events happening in the first half, as an audience, one wonders where exactly is the story going. The answers to all the questions come much later in the second half. The director clearly wanted to build up the suspense but many may not be impressed with that narrative. Another factor is that more than the story of the film, it is the sound effects that do the scaring. In fact the story gets a little predictable towards the climax and even shifts away from the horror genre altogether. But the most risky factor about film is the amount of blood, gore and violence shown in the movie, which may gross out a lot of viewers. The promos of the film were spooky, but not every viewer, excited to watch Anushka Sharma’s experiment with horror, will be prepared to handle the gore scenes.

Overall, PARI – NOT A FAIRYTALE has an interesting premise with a fair amount of chills and thrills. However, the weak screenplay and unnecessary blood and gore is off putting. At the box office, the film will appeal to the segment of audiences who enjoy the horror/gore genre of films.

  3. TV watch , Movie review: Kanchana dubbed in hindi

The horror comedy movie is pretty average except for the brilliant and highly entertaining 10 minutes scene in a house where the hero gets possessed and torments his brother, mother and sister in law (this calls for 4/5). That scene is a real hoot and 3 cheers to the screenplay writer for imagining such a horror comedy which has never been envisaged before.

Rest of the movie is mediocre. Infact the movie has the worst possible C grade start. However it picks up a bit to an overall time pass watch.

  4. In the last thread, it was quite an interesting observation by a member Shivaay, which as usual got derailed by fanboys.

This is a patterns now in this forum.

Whenever fan of a non Aamir puts up a point, following thing happens either one at a time or all at the same time

    1. Someone (usually jeeves or Marcus) taunts him and asks does his star do the same thing better, why he does etc. They have no logic to reply to their point. None at all. They may give a lnegthy lecture after the stroms has passed.

    2. Couple of sweet talkers will first indulge in reasonable debate. The victim will feel acited as this is what brought them to this forium. Then the sweet tooths will taunt him and the person then falls prey to either bring Aamir in the discussion or compare his star with Aamir. Then the vultures attack him- How dare you…are you crazy…do you know cinema etc. The trolls dont realise that this is cyber bullying is a criminal offence in USA and UK and they will get handcuffed in minutes if complaints are made.

    3. Devoid of any new story from Aamir Khan since weeks, few old fans will appear and make sane remarks to bring things back to normal. However they do not say a single word against the sweet tooths and trolls.

So all non Aamir fans, please dont get disheartened. The chinese invasion is good for Pakistan and OBOR region, not for INDIA.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Padmaavat had an excellent fifth week of 6 crore nett and this is still with Gujarat and Rajasthan missing and the film now has a total of nearly 276 crore nett. It is the sixth highest fifth week collections of all time and if we add the ratio for Gujarat and Rajasthan then it is fifth highest fifth week.

There was an attempt to release the film in Gujarat but it did not materialize. the film will still probably run for a couple of more weeks and should finish around the 280 crore nett mark. The share of the film will be around 130 crore and its recovery from all revenue sources will go close to 300 crore on the highest budget ever till date of 215 crore.

The collections of Padmaavat till date are as follows

    First Week – 1,59,47,00,000

    Second Week – 66,93,00,000

    Third Week – 30,09,00,000

    Fourth Week – 13,44,00,000

    Fifth Week – 6,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 2,75,93,00,000 apprx

Padman grossed 3.25-3.50 crore nett in week three to take its total to around 79 crore nett in three weeks. The film will finish in the 80 crore nett range. .

    • Meanwhile the national and social impact created by Padman continues.

Meanwhile, Divya Dutta shared her regards to Akshay Kumar for making a gem like Padman.

“The film has made a huge effort to throw light on the subject. Kudos to Akshay Kumar and Tina (Twinkle Khanna). People have been talking about the film and its message, and what Akshay Kumar is bringing to people matters. They take it seriously. Because it was a commercial film, it got attention. Usually, we make films on taboo subjects, but those are made as documentaries”.

“We are a cinema-affected society and people are impacted by what is shown on screen. Art derives inspiration from society and vice versa. People I have met in smaller towns have been talking about PadMan. It was taboo and uncomfortable for people to talk about, which piqued their interest and they went to see the film”.

Divya Dutta was recently invited as a guest of honour speaker at the 25th anniversary of the National Commission for women, where she spoke at the #YesIBleed campaign in New Delhi which was organized to spread awareness about hygiene, myths and taboos associated with menstruation.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety Excellent First Week

    Box Office India Trade Network

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has recorded excellent first week collections of 43.50 crore nett apprx and remained rock steady over the weekdays. The film had a good chance to do well in Delhi NCR and East Punjab but the bonus has come in Mumbai which picked up on day two and remained steady all week. So basically both the main areas are working for the film when normally Mumbai tends to under perform for these NCR type films.

The film may emerge a SUPER HIT film or even better going the weekday numbers but depends how the second weekend fares. It is Holi weekend so that should add to the collections of the film. There is Pari, and Veeray Di Wedding for competition but Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is very strongly established so those films will not make much of a difference even if they do well.

The first week collections of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety till date are as follows.

    Friday – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 9,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 10,75,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 4,75,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 4,50,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 4,25,00,000 apprx

A true hit is one which not only makes profits for its distributors & exhibitors but also trends well at the BO and has a positive WOM. Making profit via smart economics can make a film a “commercial success” but not a universal box office success. In that sense Padman, despite being a profitable film should not be given a final BO verdict of anything more than AVERAGE, because the trend has been below average (although personally, I enjoyed the film despite its slow pace & flawed screenplay; a bold courageous attempt imo).

Bajrangi Bhaijaan had a fair start in China as it grossed $1 million till 3PM in China. so the film should be able to finish around $2 million or a little higher by the end of the day. The opening is nothing like Secret Superstar or Dangal but that is because Aamir Khan has a built a huge following in China.

The Chinese distributors even promoted the film through some video that showed Aamir Khan crying after the screening of Bajrangi Bhaijaan when it released in India so that the film gained traction among the audience.

The release of the film is pretty wide though nothing like Secret Superstar but still its a $5-6 million investment by the Chinese distributors so it will need around $11-12 million before any return comes to the makers of the film.

      • @Jay – Guilty pleasure maybe … but QSQT was a trendsetter in its own way to bring young romance back on screen in an age of overblown action masala. And before you judge it as a film, you have to look at the context of the quality of films produced in the eighties – it was pathetic! QSQT was a breath of fresh air in a stale state of the industry. In fact, there would have been no MPK or Salman Khan without QSQT.

Dil maybe a guilty pleasure (no pleasure stuff ‘for me’), but even his other follow up romances like DHKMN and HHRPK were nice feel-good stuff (again wrt to the movies that was abundantly made at that time). Personally, I would revisit QSQT, DHKMN and HHRPK (incidentally all remakes of western classics) anyday over his transition stuff like Rangeela, Ghulam, Ishq, etc (RH was never my cup of tea).

        • Likes of Tridev, Tezaab, Ram Lakhan were kind of representative of the B-grade stuff that was abundant in eighties (these were kind of better films in that genre). Dont think those formulaic films have any shelf life today (unless one is nostalgic). Similar formula was later used in the nineties by the likes of Suniel Shetty, Akshay Kumar, Sunny Deol, etc in the nineties.

Parinda was a cut above the rest and still quite watchable. Chandni was what family romance was all about at that time. Chopras later took that formula to new heights thanks to SRK’s overacting as the romantic hero (Likes of Rishi and Anil took themselves seriously enough to not become cynosures in similar setups of Chandni/Lamhe). MPK rode on the new found flavor for young romance that QSQT had established (although it was much more commercially successful than QSQT).

Anyways, QSQT and Parinda are still watchable. QSQT was more significant of the two, because it set a new trend.

A lot of this is actually from the LATE 1980s and early 1990s, and isn’t representative of the 1980s as a whole, which actually gave us some wonderful films, including the likes of Karz, the JP Dutta films, and some excellent Mahesh Bhatt films too. In my opinion Tezaab also cannot be put in the same category as Tridev, it was a much more meaningful film. On the question of whether these films will hold up, personally Tezaab holds up much better for me than most of the 1990s’ big hits (Kuch Kuch Hora Hai? Let me give a crude example. During D3 or PK promotions, Aamir expressed pleasant surprise that in a concurrent poll/survey the public had rated QSQT as their favorite ahead of films like Lagaan and others. That is shelf life.

BO flops/average films like AAA or JJHS have more shelf life and recall than Aamir’s BO hits like Dil, DHKMN, HHRPK. Thats shelf life.

That is partly because how the surviving stars that evolved afterwards. Aamir left his romantic image and went for other stuff. Salman hardly could encash on the ‘family entertainment’ of HAHK except for a smaller HSSH; and his ‘Bhai Superstar’ image in this decade has made his nineties work irrelevant (more so because of his non-performance in noughties had disconnected any sort of continuity). SRK thrashed out all the charm of DDLJ with his nth iterations. And Akshay left all his B-grade Khiladi stuff and moved on to comedy. Even the current fans of these stars hardly care about the movies they made in nineties. Except for SRK fans, who of course deserve to be nostalgic.

What difference does one more film make? If he thinks he is ready now for Mahabharata venture, it may be the best time to do so. He can still pull out a leading role like Arjuna’s in that series.

I agree that it is best to leave when one is at the top. But Aamir’s filmography is fairly slim (around 40 films maybe?) — so the fan in me wants a couple of films more. Would be great to see him in a cop drama like Sarfarosh, if possible. And one good comedy; Aamir’s comic timing is good. Loved his SS character , the outrageous, yet vulnerable Shakti Kumarr.

Pari And Veerey Ki Wedding Are Dull
    Friday 02 March 2018 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pari had a poor opening of around 10-12% which is lower than Phillauri released a year ago and also had Anushka Sharma in the lead but that film was helped by the presence of Diljit Dosanjh and managed to open in East Punjab / Delhi area.

The film is facing strong competition from Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety which is still going very strong. The collections of all films are a bit low in the morning due to Holi and should gain post the afternoon.

Still even taking this into account its a low opening for Pari. The horror genre is bad enough in India but this film is probably even worse as it looks more towards a psychological thriller which hardly have a market and on top there is no music which makes it even harder for the film.

Music is the key to all genres when the cast is not there so for a film like this to come without music needs some totally different level thinking producer. But when the Friday comes it tells how badly you have gone wrong.

This is not to say the film has no chance to do well, it can still pick up and do some business but the film has been released on a holiday so you have to take some sort of initial as otherwise what is the point of a holiday.

The good point of the film is that it has not really been promoted so costs are kept down as even if you spend it would hardly improve the initial. Repetitive interviews that actors do for all films and run around on television hardly convert the audience. The film should improve collections in the evening but it will have to show growth tomorrow despite today being a holiday to stay in the race.

The other film Veerey Ki Wedding is very poor and opened to hardly 5% collections.

But leaving this aside it’s a bit like saying Salman’s films open big in India because he’s built up a following. One thing’s for sure, these aren’t the guys I’d select to head my propaganda outfit! You need people with a little more intelligence than this (to be effective at their jobs)!

Imagine what any other actor in Aamir’s position would have done right now. Join hands with a Chinese production and make a big budget movie with a know chinese actor or actress, get a profit sharing deal and make insane money. This is where Aamir is different from just about anyone. He is going to do whatever he wants to do……nothing else matters!

Ram Gopal Verma, known for his controversial statements, had openly expressed his love for the diva over Twitter and was grief-stricken after he learned about the actress’s demise. The actress had worked with him in a Telugu movie ‘Kshana Kshanam’. If the reports are anything to go by, the filmmaker plans to make a documentary on the diva.

Though an official confirmation is awaited, lyricist Sirasri, who is an ardent follower of the filmmaker, recently stated it in an ongoing debate on a Telugu TV channel. He told the channel that Varma will officially announce the biopic once the story is locked.

And in the hiatus between TOH and Mahabharata films, they should release TZP, Lagaan, RDB in China.

So this is a two way deal. Unlike Pakistanis, chinese dont harm our soldiers. They just try to create border disputes.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is on course to be the highest grossing small film of all time as it recorded an excellent 5.50-5.75 crore nett on its eighth day. The total collections of the film are now nearly 50 crore nett.

The film is only 5-10% less than its first day collection though that is because of the holiday for Holi but even if we take out that factor it is still a very strong hold. The highest grossing small films are Aashiqui 2 and Fukrey Again at around 78-79 crore nett and this looks pretty certain to beat these figures.

The collections of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety till date are as follows.

    First Week – 43,75,00,000

    Friday – 5,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 49,25,00,000 apprx

It will be interesting to see how this film fares on Saturday as the way it is faring in areas that sustain well it could even show growth despite coming off on a holiday. The film easily beat the new release Pari despite being screened on less screens and has a lot of gas in the tank as there is no stopping this film in Delhi NCR and East Punjab.

The second Friday collections confirm the SUPER HIT status of the film.

    Saturday 03 March 2018 09.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pari had a poor opening day of around 4 crore nett. The film started slowly but picked from the afternoon as Holi festivities got over. The 4 crore net opening would have been reasonable if it was a normal day but its a poor performance for a holiday.

It managed to beat the opening day numbers of Phillauri which grossed 3.86 crore nett but by a very small margin and it was a holiday so on real value the opening is lower.

The film is basically a psychological thriller which offers little entertainment for the audiences in India and on top it is devoid of music which is going to make it hard for the film going forward.

The film will be mainly for the five metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore but maybe you can take out Delhi from the equation as the genre tends to be very bad there unless supported by cast which is rare for these type of films.

The film has to show some solid growth coming off a holiday and that will be a big task for the film. It is an urban multiplex film so the above metros could grow but solid growth at an all India level is going to be hard to come by.

The other film Veerey Ki Wedding is very poor and opened to around 75-80 lakhs nett on its opening day which is a similar collection to last weeks Welcome To New York but the costs are much lower than that film.

From afar it seems that a superstar’s life is perfect. We can neither look inside their homes to see their personal lives, nor assess their mental, emotional or spiritual health for ourselves. The audience is fed a perfectly constructed image. Aamir Khan, who looks like he’s got it all together, battled the demon of depression in the isolation of his home for four years following his separation and subsequent divorce from his first wife; he was rendered unable to work, barely mustering up the will to leave his house. His younger brother has a history of severe mental illness, so weak nerves and a highly sensitive nature may run in the family …

That period of depression remains a mystery and if a biopic is ever made on his life, it should revolve around this period of ‘WTF happened’?

Read somewhere that they eloped and got married against the wishes of thie families during the making of QSQT. I dont think she expected Aamir to become such a big star. But she did stick on with him for a long time despite his affairs. Even when AKP was formed, Reena looked after the production side of Lagaan actively. She seems like a strong woman.

But for a guy who had been so focused on his career, his disinterest in making films for 3-4 years is an extreme phenomenon. It is an unknown story and is probably an interesting one.

He remembers the bus number, how they went to the registrar’s office, got married before a couple of witness- friends and came back to their respective homes. Months later Reena’s sister discovered the secret marriage and informed her dad who was out of town. He returned home, furious, but meanwhile the Hussain family had also discovered the shaadi. They accepted Reena who, eheartedly ; the girl’s father met the nervous son in law — and all was well.

    Deepali Nandwani

At least three star couples of the Hindi film industry have decided to go their separate ways recently.

On Monday, December 9, actor Aamir Khan and his wife Reena filed a petition for mutual divorce at a family court in Mumbai. They cited ‘temperamental differences’ as the reason for their separation.

Aamir and Reena, who were married on April 18, 1986, have been living separately since October 2001, right after rumours of the actor’s alleged affair with his Dil Chahta Hai costar Priety Zinta, began pouring in. Reena has been staying at a separate flat in Bandra, a Mumbai suburb in which Aamir too has a home, since.

According to the terms mentioned in the petition, and to which both of them have agreed, Reena will have the custody of their children, Junaid (9) and Aira (4). Aamir is allowed to meet his children thrice a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6 pm to 8 pm. He will also have a right to meet his kids on alternate weekends every month, from Friday 7 pm till Sunday 6 pm.

Aamir and Reena have decided to share summer and Christmas vacations equally with their children. If a child spends summer vacation with one parent, s/he will have a choice to spend Christmas with the other, the petition stated.

When contacted, Aamir refused to come on the line. Rumours about the actor’s several affairs in the past, including a torrid one with Pooja Bhatt, who starred with him in Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin, has made headlines before, but no one really took them seriously.

      • But there was talk in general , through other articles, indicating that the actor was depressed over the fact that his family had broken up. And the rest of the family were careful, not to ‘divorce’ her. Aamir younger sister remains married to Reena’s brother . Whatever ….Reena seems to have established herself as a good artist. She is there on Instagram, with her paintings, quite regularly.

        • There is always some gossip or the other. But its difficult to believe a man who constantly cheated on his wife, just broke down when his life left him. Even as ‘rumors’ they sound incredulously inconsistent. On top of that ,his complete disinterest in making films for years dont make sense considering how focused he had been on his career. Yes, he was perhaps severely depressed, but there probably was more going on behind the hood than a divorce. Anyways, the fascinating part was the comeback. People do come out from depression; but they usually dont climb to the peak afterwards. Too many real life stories out there about depressed celebrities taking to drinking or dying of drug overdose. In that sense, this is a pretty unique story.

          Like

      • Again, lot of facts missing in above comments. I’ll put my version(real version), believe if you wish to care.

Yes, Aamir’s divorce impacted him but not like 4 years. Firstly right after Lagaan/DCH, he hasn’t signed any film. Lagaan released in June 2001 and DCH in Aug 2001. Aamir had committed to his next film with Mansoor Khan (HAPPY DIWALI), so he was not taking on any outside movies. But once Lagaan released, it was so hugely acknowledge that he was completely enjoying the phase and then delaying Mansoor’s movie and travelling with Lagaan. Once Lagaan was selected at Top 5 Best Foreign movie in early 2002, he completely focussed on it and then by mid-year started working on Mansoor’s movie and hearing other scripts. Anu Malik completed his musical score for the movie and movie was to go on floors in Oct 2002 for 2003 Diwali release. During same time, Ketan Mehta offered him Mangal Pandey and Aamir liked the movie and said he will do it after Happy Diwali. Just before 2 weeks Happy Diwali to go to floors in Sep 2002, Reena moved out of house and big fight happened and as all were working on Happy Diwali together including Reena… all became shocked and movie’s work stopped. Mansoor Khan went into hibernation and said he is not coming back to movies even to complete his last promised movie. Reena and Aamir continued fight and in Dec 2002, they both filed for mutual divorce.

From here, Aamir was completely down and then waited for his 6 months divorce separation timeframe and not doing anything and then by 2003 mid-year, Ketan Mehta again came to remind him about Mangal Pandey. Aamir was ready and started growing his hair and doing body building in akhada and gave the permission to start working on the pre-production. By Nov 2003, Mangal Pandey went onto floors and took just over 1.5 years and released by 2005 August. This movie had its own shares of issues with Aishwarya backing down, Hindi/English version, producers fights and release issues. So 1.5 years is not that bad for this timeframe. Even before MP released due to its delayed release, he had signed 2 others movies to cover up the delay – Rang De Basanti and Fanaa which released both in 1st half of 2006.

So, there is lot of issues for the 4 year delay but mostly it was the kind of movie he signed – Mangal Pandey which took over 2 years in making from his physical transformation to shooting and release.

        Like

        • Another detail here is that Sanjay Dutt had been signed for Mangal Pandey. The film has been announced with Dutt, Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee. Nearly a year later, Aamir stepped in for Dutt’s role. Later on, Amisha Patel replaced Rai.

But for a considerable time in 2002, it was a project with Sanjay Dutt as the main lead.

          Like

        • Thanks for the chronological details. It makes sense. I was aware that he was shooting for MP in 2004 and that he spent considerable time taking Lagaan around the globe. So this nonsense about losing interest in movies due to depression is more of media fiction. His divorce screwed up only one film, that too because it was a family production. And Mansoor had his own issues and disinterest in film-making too.

          Like

        • This is late 2001 and Mansoor’s Happy Diwali was already in ‘maybe’ zone:

“Right now the only film I am committed to do is with AB Corp Ltd to be directed by my cousin Mansoor Khan. However, we may not be doing the film called Happy Diwali that we had announced. We’re thinking of changing the subject. No matter what, the next film I do will definitely be for Bachchan’s AB Corp.”

          http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2001/nov/07aamir.htm

So during the ‘heartbreak’ he was taking time to decide what’s next after Lagaan/DCH. I doubt Mansoor had the motivation to complete another film. But most likely he would have had a release in 2003 if his divorce did not happen. He then put 2 years into MP, which did not give the expected results, although it is said that no one lost money on that film.

This trend has even made a 100 cr collection look like a possibility. Even if it doesn’t breach the 100 cr barrier, the low costs on one hand & the superlative word of mouth on the other have ensured that we have our first true blue BLOCKBUSTER film of 2018. The film is set for a huge second weekend total and in time it is sure to cross Pad Man to become the second highest grossing film of 2018.

The second weekend drop is going to be somewhere in the 25% range which is excellent and its not as if the first weekend was some very low number like 10 or 15 crore nett. It was a healthy 26 crore nett and from there the film has hardly dropped.

The collections of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety till date are as follows.

    First Week – 43,75,00,000

    Friday – 5,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 55,50,00,000 apprx

The film has crossed 15 crore nett in Mumbai and will cross 15 crore nett in Delhi / UP on Sunday. the collections in Delhi / UP are excellent as the Pad Man numbers will crossed within two weeks though it will not cross Pad Man in Mumbai.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan has did well on day two in China as it collected $3 million apprx which takes its two day total to $5.1 million apprx. The film must do $12 million to make it a worthwhile exercise and all costs are covered and this should happen and if Monday holds it will happen comfortably.

But a big total seems unlikely as the comparison below with Dangal shows. The opening day between the two films is pretty much the same with Dangal leading by a quarter million dollars but that gap shoots up to $2 million apprx on day two .

        • It has. And certainly it is much more pro-Salman or pro-SRK compared to Aamir. Whis is why I am a bit surprised by this report. But it’s just I don’t feel it is as anti-Aamir as it is made out here at times. There have been a few times when some have been clutching at straws trying to nit-pick negatives in what can be a positive report for Aamir.

I do think BOI are slightly biased against Aamir but only bacause their order of preference is something like this:

          1. Salman
          2. SRK
          3. Aamir

I have seen more bias from them against Bachan/Hrithik/Devgan/Akshay when they have under-reported their films numbers. One thing is for sure from their years of reporting: They are very much anti-Bachan.

  46. Pari Struggles On Day Two
    Sunday 04 March 2018 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pari struggled on its second day as it showed growth of around 20% to collect 4.75 crore nett. The film needed to be really showing an upturn of at least 35-40% for it have a chance. It was a holiday for Holi on Friday so collections were boosted a little so if we take fair value of Friday then there is 50% growth but that is coming from a very low level.

The film has grossed 8.75 crore nett in two days which is a low total and on top there is no trend. The collections are a little better in Mumbai and Kolkatta but overall the performance is dull and the way places like Gujarat and Rajasthan are performing it will be a surprise if there is big Sunday growth. Also the film does not look to have much for families outside the metros. .

The first two day collections of Pari are as follows.

    Friday – 4,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 8,50,00,000 apprx

As much as all the cynics & critics on this blog might rant, the fact remains that Bajrangi Bhaijaan is one of the most admired & appreciated movies of this decade, at par with Dangal. Generating over 3.5 cr footfalls running parallel to Baahubali 1 is no mean feat. The domestic audiences loved Salman Khan’s vulnerability in the role of Pawan Chaturvedi as well as Munni’s cute heart melting mannerisms & Nawaz’s ever reliable emotionally comical act. The acceptance of this film among Chinese audiences is well deserved and hopefully, this beautiful film finds more appreciation among larger audiences across the globe.

On a personal note, I loved the film for most parts except the overtly melodramatic climax & a few excessively sugar coated sequences which were too good to be true. In that sense, BB is very much like a Raju Hirani film, a simple story of humanity against a complex socio-political backdrop, sugar coated with sweet moments and displaying the triumph of humanity in the end. In that sense, just like most Hirani ventures, this one was too good to be true. My rating : 7/10

    • One is free to consider Salman as the next Guru Dutt. But ‘justifying’ that personal opinion because it generated 3.5 cr footfalls takes the cake.

Trump also believes that he is the best President ever, because millions elected him! Again, this is nothing against Trump, but it says a lot about the trash that voted him to power.

    • I liked Bajrangi Bhaijaan a lot , but my husband (who leans towards Salman) loved it and laughed aloud happily on an international flight where he watched it first time, same as me. It was a sweet funny film , where Salman performed well. But in my humble opinion, it was more of a director Kabir Khan film. Have loved Kabir Khan’s films right from Kabul Express onwards. I liked Ek Tha Tiger too. Need to watch Tubelight to see where it tripped.

But the Guru Dutt comparison doesn’t work for me. Have loved Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam most. Such an exquisite unique film. And though I won’t compare Dangal to any Guru Dutt film — I just love Dangal, and not just because it stars a favourite as male lead. In fact I feel that Dangal is not getting appreciated critically as much as it deserves to. It gets brushed off as a biopic. To me the first half of the film is worth a full five stars. And the song — Haanikarak Bapu — what a lovely funny song sequence, so rooted, carrying the story along, telling it beautifully. The song has been sung by two young boys from Rajasthan, folk singers I understand. Loved the two girls, every scene of theirs. Love the father Aamir in his middle- aged man avatar. Was happy that he had the courage to go ahead with his instinct and play the grizzly dad. Loved the dialogues, the dull mustard yellow hued cinematography, the smaller characters like the guys in the rural dangals…love every bit of this first half. Nitesh Tiwari, take a bow sir.

The second half gets about 4, simply because the coach was a bit of a convenient caricature. Actually the Phogat girls trained at Patiala under many coaches; but the father did have differences with their methods; ultimately he was asked to stay away from attending one of the finals at the commonwealth. Geeta Phogat has spoken about it an interview. So there is some justification for Dangal’s second half. Still, the cinematic liberty taken was a tad much.

To me Dangal is one of Aamir’s finest, at par or even superior to Lagaan.

Sarfarosh, RDB, Dangal, Lagaan, 1947 Earth, even the more commercial Ghulam — such rooted films all.

In comparison TOH may come off as masala entertainer — but if they do a good job of it, good.

I am glad that countries like China ( and even Hong Kong, Taiwan) have showered appreciation on Dangal. Well deserved.

Not for a moment did I mention that my appreciation for BB was BECAUSE millions others liked it. On the contrary its the vice versa. I’m glad that millions others have appreciated a movie that I appreciated as well. Just like the fact that i’m glad that one of my favorite movies of this decade, Dangal has been admired & appreciated by millions across the globe. Even if that wasn’t the case, Dangal would continue remaining my personal favorite for the decade of the 2010’s. And yes as of now i’m glad that audiences have even given a thumbs up to SKTKS which imo was a spicy delightful film only cowed down in parts due to its blatant misogyny. Of course I do not expect someone as self obsessed & full of himself to get the gist of what I’m attempting to convey. For you & your ilk, any movie starring a certain performer that you folks do not approve of is outright trash & garbage even before it goes on floors. Attempt to broaden your horizon mate! And if possible do try accepting the fact that the Hindi film industry has actors, actresses, film makers, composers etc etc who can also create movies at par with what Mr Aamir Khan acts in or produces. Yes Mr. AK is a legend, no 2 ways about that but that in no way implies that Mr. SK or SRK or AK or anyone else for that matter is anything less in “their own respective domain” and among their own respective admirers. As for Donald Trump, if millions have voted for him, it definitely makes him a very very “popular” leader. Just like Mr. Modi is a very popular leader. Now whether they’re good or not, is a matter of individual judgement because as I have mentioned earlier, quality is a matter of choice & perception which varies from individual to individual, but popularity is a commodity that quantifiable and can be measured in absolute terms. Most of the folks who have watched TMK junked the film, yet the fact that TMK is “watched” by more number of folks than a Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan certainly makes TMK a more “popular” film than SMS. In the box office domain, audience acceptance can of course be measured by theatrical trending. Implying that Ra.1 might still remain a more popular film than SKTKS because more people watched it, however SKTKS was appreciated by a lot greater % of the folks who watched it, as proved by its extra ordinary word of mouth at the box office. As for films like BB & Dangal, they’re those rare gems which are hugely popular & extremely well appreciated at the same time. And if you’re tempted to believe that the box office results dictate my personal choice, let me inform you that HAHK, DDLJ and RH are 3 of the most boring snoozeworthy fests i’ve ever watched on celluloid, this from a viewer whose from a generation well before the 90’s, one who grew up on the Mr. India’s and Karma’s of the world. Even Shehenshah is a more watchable film that DDLJ and HAHK :in my personal opinion”.

  54. Pari Has Poor Weekend And Poor Trend
    Monday 05 March 2018 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pari has had a poor weekend of 13.50 crore nett and there is not much of a trend for the film either. Last year another Anushka Sharma starrer which did not do well Phillauri collected 14.65 crore nett and it was not a holiday weekend and it was before GST lowered the taxes on collections. The poor trend on Friday and Saturday when it had Holi to aid it meant that Sunday was unlikley to go far.

Despite being a 1.15 crore nett difference between Pari and Phillauri in collections, the real difference factoring in Holi and GST is much more. Hindi horror films earlier had problems as they were tacky in making despite some being well told stories but Pari the story telling has even gone wrong with inspiration probably coming from some foreign film industry. Only the Raaz series have managed to get away with horror and it was backed by super hit music.

The first weekend collections of Pari are as follows.

    Friday – 4,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 4,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 13,50,00,000 apprx

Pari needs a strong hold on Monday to have any chance of survival but its probably going to be a big ask. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has affected it in Delhi NCR and Punjab where a huge chunk of the premium multiplexes are but it also has to with the film not really finding appreciattion.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has recorded an excellent second weekend of 18.25 crore nett. The first weekend was 25.83 crore nett which is a drop of just 30%. The total collections of the film in ten days are 62 crore nett

The film has easily out collected the new release Pari and is set for a sustained run and will easily become the highest grossing small film of all time and at the moment the collections look to be going over 90 crore nett. But if the film gets the luck of the run it is not out of the question that the film can become the first small non cast film to hit 100 crore nett.

The collections of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety till date are as follows.

    First Week – 43,75,00,000

    Friday – 5,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 6,50,00,000 apprx

    Second Weekend – 18,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 62,00,00,000 apprx

If we compare with Fukrey Returns that film collected around 15 crore nett in its second weekend and its collections stood at 64.50 crore nett after ten days. A little higher than Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety but its only a matter of time before it goes ahead of Fukrey Returns..

    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajrangi Bhaijaan had a good weekend in China as it grossed $8.5 million apprx which is the third best for an Indian production after Secret Supestar ($27.35 million) and Dangal ($13.66 million) but the release of those films was also wider with Secret Superstar having 55k screenings daily and Dangal getting 30k plus while Bajrangi Bhaijaan was at 20k.

It is ahead of PK which grossed $5.06 million from around 17k screenings. Also what has to be noted is that Secret Superstar, Dangal and PK all shot up a lot on Saturday while that is not the case with Bajrangi Bhaijaan which could make a long run hard to come by. The flat numbers on Sunday are not much of an issue as that is par for the course in China for most films. .

The opening weekend numbers of Bajrangi Bhaijaan in China is as follows.

    Friday

    Collection- $2,210,000

    Screenings – 20,130

    Footfalls – 459,554

    Saturday

    Collection – $3,110,000

    Screenings – 19,901

    Sunday

    Collection – $3,130,000

Padmaavat is still going very strong as it grossed 2.50 crore nett in its sixth weekend. The trend is super solid this week with a drop of just 35% from last weekend. The Holi weekend helped but the film has to be there also as the holiday weekend did nothing for Pari or Veerey Ki Wedding.

The film has a total 278.50 crore nett now and it will be at around 280 crore nett by the end of the sixth week. The sixth WEEKEND figures are more than the sixth WEEK figures of films like PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Dangal and Tiger Zinda Hai and this is without Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The collections of Padmaavat till date are as follows

    First Week – 1,59,47,00,000

    Second Week – 66,93,00,000

    Third Week – 30,09,00,000

    Fourth Week – 13,44,00,000

    Fifth Week – 5,91,00,000

    Sixth Week – 2,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 2,78,34,00,000 apprx

To which Khan stated, “I have not thought about writing a book. But if I would do, it would be about my life and career. It would be about the challenges. The subjects would be about my shooting experiences and many other important instances that have happened in my life. Right now, I am so busy with my films that I do not get the time”.

The actor further added, “I must reveal that in fact, I have recorded many moments of my life. I usually keep on recording all the necessary parts of my life”.

When asked if he would like to have a biopic on him, the actor jokingly expressed, “No! My life is boring”. To which his Raju Hirani interrupted saying, “Who wouldn’t want to make a film on Aamir?” He further joked, “Aamir is writing a book on himself from the past 50 years so when once he finishes the script I will direct the film”.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan has had a good opening day in China as it recorded the third best start after Secret Superstar and Dangal with $2.20 million apprx. The numbers are good but as Secret Superstar opened to $6.81 million a month or so back the numbers look a bit low.

But the numbers do not tell whole story as the screenings were less and there was more competition in the Chinese market compared to when Secret Superstar released. Dangal grossed $2.49 million on its opening day which is slightly better than Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

It is reported that Bajrangi Bhaijaan released on 8000 screens which could be the case and this is little less than the 9000 screens of Dangal but the screenings which is far more important than the screens in the Chinese market are less. Dangal had 30,364 screens on its opening day and Bajrangi Bhaijaan has had 20,000 apprx. Secret Superstar was released on 16,000 screens with 55,865 screenings. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety beats Pad Man, registers the 2nd highest Second Weekend of 2018

Though the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Padmaavat that starred Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor tops the list as the highest second weekend grosser with collections of Rs. 46 cr, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety comes in second place followed by Pad Man with collections of Rs. 19.40 cr and Rs. 9.03 cr respectively.

Interestingly, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety still continues to enjoy the audiences’ favour and is expected to see growth in business on its second week running. As of now all that remains to be seen is whether the film that has already become one of the biggest success stories of the year manages to also enter the Rs. 100 cr club in the coming few weeks.

Movie Name – Second weekend collections

    Padmaavat – Rs. 46 cr

Pari had a fall in collections on Monday which looked on the cards going by the weekend trend especially Saturday when the film failed to grow much considering it should have got the advantage of the day after Holi in many circuits and on top the Saturday factor in metros.

Pari has a drop of 50% on Monday from a poor start on Friday. The film collected in the 1.75-2 crore nett range on Monday which gives it a total of 15.25 crore nett apprx in four days. The first week will close around the 20 crore nett mark and business thereafter will be difficult. .

The first four day collections of Pari are as follows.

    Friday – 4,00,00,000 apprx

The week should cross $15 million and then Black Panther will release China and on top there are few strong local films running. The sort of screenings that Bajrangi Bhaijaan can get in week two will determine where the film can go. It is not a Dangal or Secret Superstar but is set to good numbers and make the release a worthwhile exercise.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is set for for an excellent second week as it has already gone over 20 crore nett in the first four days of week two. The film collected 2.50 crore nett which is a very strong number for the second Monday and has a total of 64.50 crore nett after 11 days.

The second week business is going to around 27 crore nett plus and its only bigger films (budget 50 crore plus) that have collected this high in week two. The film will probably be the the second highest grosser of 2018 by the end of the third week and even after it is likely the film will still have some legs left especially in Delhi NCR.

I would say this guy may be a Hritik fan. KNPH is an odd one out here and hardly deserves a place in such a list. Yeah, it created a momentary superstar, but it went fussssss very soon. His dad’s franchise films somewhat kept him relevant over that decade, but he has fizzled out. I would rather include Guru or Yuva in this list instead, as those films have some shelf life.

      • And noughties is by far the best phase in Aamir’s career by a margin. In the nineties he did movies like JJWS and Sarfarosh, but they did not do that well commercially. JJWS was average and Sarfarosh was a small hit. This decade he had given Dangal and PK, both bonafide blockbusters; but thats pretty much it. Of course, there has been minor successes in Talaash and SS (in India) and a blockbuster in D3. But although commercially more successful, Aamir’s work in this decade does not measure up to the noughties.

Maybe he can turn it around with the Mahabharata series in the next decade, but that will be challenging.

As per reliable sources Komal Nahta & BOI.co.in, Krish 3 did 180 cr all India nett in Hindi & a further 12 cr nett in Tamil/Telugu versions. Bang Bang was at 144 cr nett in Hindi with a further 6 cr nett in dubbed versions while Kaabil was 90 cr nett in Hindi & 6 cr nett in dubbed formats. My final verdicts for these films : Krish 3 : HIT, Bang Bang : AVERAGE, Kaabil : BELOW AVERAGE.

As per BOI.com, K3 is a BLOCKBUSTER, BB is SEMI HIT while KAABIL is Below Avg. As per Nahta, K3 is a SUPER HIT, BB is COVERAGE while Kaabil is a Flop.

that is too harsh on Jr. AB. Of course HR is even better than the likes of AD and Akki as frar BO is concerned and comparison with Abhi is simply out of place. But Abhi himself has to be blamed for that. He is lazy or the childhood dyslexia has been still making him one. He had been given as many opp. but hasn’t been able to cash on them. For a Krish, he had his Drona – cudn’t pull off. But his filmography still doesn’t look all that bad if u take in account multistarrers also. Here are his notable films at the BO:
Yuva, Dus, Bluff Master, Dhoom series, Bunty aur babli, Sarkar, Guru, Dostana……his upcoming films at IMDB shows Lefty (looks interesting) and Mahabharata……so Abhi has been given ample chances and let us just be not too harsh to him. If HR has scored 8/10 then Abhi still can be given 5/10.

Imo AB Jr. could still have done better had he not tried to emulate his dad is almost every genre of role that he’s played. In that sense being a Bachchan has been more of a curse than a boon. He’s tried emulating his intensity in films like Sarkar & Guru and tried matching up to his comic timing in films like Dostana & Bol Bachchan. Heck he’s even tried emulating the baritone on a few occasions (climax scene in Guru). He’s never really come out of the “Bachchan” shadow & tried being an “Abhishek” (or perhaps he never wanted to?).

LAZY is a term which suits HR more than AB imo. Lazy for just not doing enough number of films. Imagine a guy at the peak of his career ruling the roost at the BO with D2 and Krrish in 2006, both of which were the top 2 highest grossers of the year following it up with a JA which was one of the rare commercial successes in the “historic epic” genre that decade (even the 3 Khans failed at it with Asoka, Mangal Pandey & Veer) and what does he do? He takes a 2.5 year hiatus only to return with an gentry/NRI appealing Kites & Guzaarish, both of which catered to no more than 10-15% of the domestic audience leading to his downfall at the box office. All was still not over yet! He did get a foothold with ZNMD, Agneepath, K3 & Bang Bang all of which were good healthy grossers & catered to a wider audience at the domestic market (barring perhaps the urban appealing ZNMD) & once again he decides to take a 2 year hiatus only to come back with a terrifying shocker called MJD. And then when he has a single screen/mass appealing film in Kaabil (which actually trended decently but could not accumulate enough due to a miserably low opening) he decides to clash head on with another complete mass entertainer starring a struggling, yet a more popular and experienced superstar, thereby demolishing any chances his film had of recording decent collections. Post that he once again goes into oblivion & ensures that whatever little goodwill Kaabil generated (via its decent BO trending) is completely forgotten and gone down the drain. There’s some hope with Super 30, the YRF film with Tiger & K4 but HR needs to do 3-4 films every 2 years to make any sort of comeback & remain in contention. As of now, the guy who was the box office numero uno about 12 years ago is even below the likes of Akshay, AD, Ranbir & Ranveer in terms of BO popularity mainly due to his complete abstinence, perhaps due to his “laziness”.

Hritik at his best was a poor man’s Sunny Deol. Had a couple of big hits riding on papa’s back. But reality is that he has been as significant as Abhishek after 2006-2007 period. A decade has passed since then. If the small successes of Jodhaa Akbar, Agneepath, ZMND, Bang Bang or Krrish3 are significant in someone’s book then Hey! EXCLUSIVE: Zoya Akhtar To Team Up With Hrithik Roshan For Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2?

According to our sources, the director will soon start working on the script and screenplay of the sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Zoya Akhtar, who is currently busy shooting for Gully Boyz with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, has already locked the basic premise for her next directorial. According to our sources, the director will soon start working on the script and screenplay of the sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

“Zoya feels that the audience would be keen to know what the characters are up-to in today’s time. The sequel will retain all the characters and the story will take a 10-year leap,” said the source.

When asked when the film would go on floors, the source said, “It is too early to talk about the same. Although the basic premise has been locked, Zoya will start working on the screenplay by end of this year once the final cut of Gully Boys is ready. If all goes as planned, the film would go on floors in the second half of 2019.”

Zoya has already conveyed her plans to make a sequel to the much-loved film and the entire cast is excited taking the idea. If all goes as planned, Hrithik Roshan will start shooting for ZNMD 2 after he wraps up the work on Super 30 and HR vs Tiger.

If it would have done more, reached out out to interiors more, it could have been very nice. I think more women only tax free shows were needed for Padman to go beyond. Majority went to watch because of the novelty in the story line. Few did not go for the same reason.

Nice way of covering up for an unaccepted film! Factually Padman opened poorly (understandable due to taboo content in a conservative society) but the trend could still have been much much better (like TEPK). The movie barely managed 8X its day 1 number and barely doubled its first weekend. That’s strictly a 50-60% acceptance ratio. If 80 cr is a benchamrk for a film and a film manages exactly that, its just “broken even”, not a success. Padman is nothing more than Average imo. Doesn’t matter how much profit the producers make, a movie starring Akshay in the lead gotta do better than 80 crs to be called a success.Comparisons with SS are bogus as SS had Aamir in a cameo and its base was more of a 40 cr film which managed a 60+ total. SKTKS is a genuine BLOCKBUSTER in every aspect, ROI, word of mouth and collections. Kudos to Luv Ranjan and team!

No one is getting into rants & public perception verdicts are not based on whether the film is distributed on commission basis or in totality. Unless you’re 1 of the distributors yourself, no outsider can know the internal details of distribution deals. Even an industry insider like Komal Nahta has mentioned this on Twitter before. A “generic” verdict of a film can only be given based on market value of the film. That’s my opinion of course. Everyone is free to follow theirs. You wanna follow FI verdicts religiously, please do so but do not forget they too have their own discrepancies. Imo Padman has a market value of 75-80 cr & with a nett of 81 cr, the profit multiple is a mere 8%. On top the wom is average. Hence final verdict -> Average. Padmaavat market value 200 cr. Profit multiple Semi hit/average, wom-> Super hit…Final verdict-> Hit

If Padman is 20 cr budget then Kaabil is 35 cr, Raees is 50 cr & Tubelight is 75 cr and all these films are Hits/Super Hits respectively by that definition. • Ever heard about distribution dynamics called commission basis?

          Like

        • Lets get down to basics. The ‘real’ market value of films like SS or Padman is not much more than their meager budgets. It does not matter if Aamir or Akshay is acting in it, because these stars wont do such films UNLESS they are the producers here, which gives them the guarantee that they will make some money out of it.

The trade knows this better than you or me, so no distributor offers high prices for such films where Aamir/Akshay can make a table profit (like in the case of Raees or Tubelight or your favorite Kaabil). So SS/Padman ends up getting distributors on commission basis, where the distributors know they wont be making much profits (usually only 9-10% cut of the distributor’s share from the gross), but at least they are guaranteed to not make any losses.

          Result?

Akshay made decent money out of Padman as did the exhibitors. Distributors not so much. Same with SS, except that Aamir made a killing here thanks to China. But alas, likes of Raees, Kaabil and Tubelight made LOSSES for their distributors. A subtle difference here, may be too much to understand.

It’s a lot easier to get so called successes via smart economics but the REAL deal is getting audiences to the theatre’s & generating a positive word of mouth. Both SS & Padman barely doubled their first weekend figures, indicating an extremely mixed word of mouth. Hence despite being profitable these films deserve a verdict no greater than Average/Semi Hit. If at all they’re profitable on a commission basis that is, the proof of which will be forever unknown to us.

        • There is no ‘unknown’ about film distribution models. If one follows a number of trade sites (instead of opening up a fictitious blog of his own), then it is quite easy to get the information about overall distribution prices and which movies are sold on commission basis or not. Just like PR machines could not keep the reports getting published about distribution losses incurred by unhappy distributors of Kaabil and Raees.

Anyways, there is no direct correlation between wom and trending for ALL cases. Again, such generalization is inane. There is a matter of ‘interest level’ in particular genres. Just like sequels to hits generate a lot more interest than a regular movie, all other things being same. For a movie like SS doubling or tripling its first 3 days figure is sometimes harder to achieve than for a small film like TZP made on a more palatable subject for various reasons.

But its boring to debate with someone who doesnt research the specifics and only does armchair analysis in general terms of sweeping statements and emphasizes more about what ‘worked’ for masses.

However this needed a stellar cast. The last one to back out was Abhishek.

Amidst many rumours of Abhishek’s exit, the main reason is finally out. As stated in the reports by entertainment portal, a source close to film said, “Abhishek was quite kicked about Paltan. However, he realised after a while that Sonu Sood had more screen space than him. That bothered him considerably. When he discussed his apprehensions with Dutta, he told him that while Sonu had more screen time, it was Abhishek who had a better character written for him. Dutta could not convince him and he backed out at the end minute.”

After years of speculations, it seems that Don 3 is finally on track. The work on the script of the film, which stars Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role has finally begun and makers are expected to give the final narration to the superstar in next few months. The third instalment of the franchise will take the story forward, however, Priyanka Chopra would not be a part of the film.

“We have locked the basic idea of the film and shared it with Shah Rukh Khan. The story this time around is set in the Middle East and a major chunk of the film would be shot in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The script is currently being worked on and we plan to go on floors sometime next year,” said a source close to the development.

Talking about Priyanka Chopra’s involvement in the film, the source said, “Since the story is set in a different region, it doesn’t warrant her character. We shall decide on the final casting of the film once the final script has been locked.”

When asked if Don 3 will be Shah Rukh Khan’s next film after Zero, the source said, “The two scripts that he is considering currently includes Salute and Don 3. There is a huge possibility of Salute going on floors before Don 3. He shall announce his next film only after finishing the shoot of Zero.”

The final domestic schedule of Zero is currently underway at a studio in Mumbai, following which the entire team will fly to New York for the final schedule of the film. The movie, directed by Aanand L Rai is slated to release in Christmas this year. The movie also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in lead.

No film is an “easy hit” unless there is a certain amount of public acceptance involved. A sequel to a popular film can only get a decent initial courtesy the goodwill generated by the predecessor, but how well the sequel trends and how much its accepted is purely based on content and audience acceptance. Else, Double Dhamaal, Kahaani 2, Welcome Back, Sarkar 2 etc should all have been Hits but factually none of them could get past the Average/Below Average mark. The reason popular film franchises like Golmaal, Housefull, Dhoom, Krrish, Fukrey, PKP, Munnabhai etc have survived is mainly because most of the films involved in these franchises (barring a few exceptions like HF3, Golmaal 2 which did not trend) have not only generated a good initial (thanks to franchise popularity) but have also been accepted by the audiences as respectable films in their own right.

        Like

        • And how exactly is ‘good trending’ defined? Dhoom and Munnabhai franchise are both well trended?? The amount of nonsense that goes around in the name of sweeping statements and foolhardy generalizations these days is plain absurd. Just like claiming Trump deserves to be reelected if large number of white trash vote for him again! And that will make America great again??? LOL

Sequels and franchise films are safe bets by any standards. Once a film is successful and somewhat liked, there is an inherent amount of interest in sequels, if made. This translates to big openings and decent trending. Doubling the opening weekend or so, is not ‘good’ trending by any means. And it hardly needs good wom/acceptance to get there if the initial interest is high. Of course, you make a debacle then it wont survive beyond the weekend, but that is rare.

Both Dhoom 2 & 3 did much more than double their initial weekend & LRM ran for months thanks to its supremely positive wom. Three distinct films release this weekend – Hate Story IV, Dil Juunglee and 3 Storeys. Each of the three films is catering to a different audience base. While Hate Story IV is for the masses and hence would also see a larger single screen penetration, 3 Storeys is purely for the multiplexes. As for Dil Juunglee, it would be somewhere in between, though multiplexes would see a bigger ratio of screens.

Irrfan Khan very unwell, unlikely to return to work for a very long time
    BySubhash K. JhaMar 8, 2018 – 10:30 am IST

With the film industry fearing the worst about Irrfan Khan’s health, and close friends of the actor confirming the worst, it appears as though Irrfan would be away from the arc lights for quite a while now. “It’s unlikely that he will return to active shooting for quite a while now…Can’t put a number on his absence of leave. But the treatment is going to be a long process,” says a source in the know.

Worst hit on the professional level is Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of crime reporter-author Hussain Zaidi gangster story Sapna Didi featuring Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. While Deepika and Irrfan both reported sick, Irrfan’s illness is far more serious than originally assumed.

Prernaa Arora who’s the co-producer on the project, says the delay is not of importance as long as the actor gets well. Sounding really upset Prernaa says, “We were about to begin shooting from next week. Vishal Sir had just come back from his final recce. We were all so excited and happy. Now this has happened. Irrfan Khan Sir and Deepika M’aam are our first and only choice .The way things are going in this world makes you wonder where we’re heading. Life is so unpredictable. Every moment warns us not take life for granted, to look after ourselves and our loved ones.”

The worried producer says she has been on tenterhooks about Irrfan’s health. “When Vishal Sir (Bhardwaj) and learnt about Irrfan Sir’s illness I felt very uneasy and depressed. I just wish Irrfan Sir to get well soon. He is a fighter, a self-made success-story and an inspiration to so many of us. I know he will be well soon. He is a fighter and to he was always been a source of inspiration.”

Recalling her association with the actor Prernaa says, “I met Irrfan Sir through Vishal Sir. They go back a long way. They love each other so much. I am so fond of both and their work together in Maqbool and Saat Khoon Maaf. I am big fan of their work. From Day 1 Vishal sir was sure Irrfan Sir was going to be the one and only choice for this role. And that’s the way it’s going to remain. We wish Irrfan Sir speedy recovery and can’t wait to start our film with him.”

    Q. You mentioned that films in Russia were a bigger hit than what Dangal was in China. Which is the biggest Indian film in Russia and how much did it gross and how many films are bigger than Dangal in China?

    L.L. Anand

    A. There are a few films released in Russia that are bigger than Dangal in China. The Russian business was counted in admits in the days Hindi films released there. Awara is the biggest film there which got 6.5 crore admissions and that was just the first run and it remained in exhibition for 10-12 years with near 10 crore admissions. This is 10 crore footfalls which came due to crazy repeat viewings due to the Main Awara Hoon song. Disco Dancer was not as big as Awara but again got huge admissions due to repeat viewings for the songs. Its difficult to say why but the figures in Russia were huge for films of Raj Kapoor, Pramod Chakravorty and B. Subhash. These three makers have all the top Hindi films in Russia for some reason big.

    Q. Secret Superstar has an Average verdict on the website but the film has the highest return of investment of all time with 15 crore cost and 1000 crore Worldwide gross

    A. Shankar

    A. The 15 crore is just production budget and then you have the cost of PA in India and Overseas then the cost of the extended guest role by Aamir Khan and then there is release cost in China. If a Bajrangi Bhaijaan cost 35 crore to promote and release on 8000 odd screens then the cost of Secret Superstar on 16000 screens is sure to be higher.

    • Tiger Returns: It Is A Trilogy For Salman Khan And Katrina Kaif!

Tiger Zinda Hai has ended its run at the box office at collections close to 340 crore, thereby emerging one of the biggest hits of all time. Starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead, this Ali Abbas Zafar directorial was the sequel to 2012 successful film, Ek Tha Tiger.

The director won a lot of acclaim from the audience for making a crisp espionage thriller and, as expected, left an open ending in the film. The climax hinted about the possibility of another film in the Tiger Franchise, as it ends with a dialogue by Salman Khan “Jab Bhi Yeh Desh Musibat Main Hoga, Yaad Rakhna, Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai.”

Now we hear that a third instalment of the franchise is already on cards. Although the work on the script is yet to begin, we hear that Aditya Chopra has already asked Ali Abbas Zafar to jump onto Tiger 3 once he finishes shooting for Bharat.

“Tiger is one of the biggest franchise of Bollywood and everyone at YRF is charged up to take the franchise forward. Ali Abbas Zafar has already extended his contract with YRF and his next film for the production house will be Tiger 3. The third Tiger film would be the last part of the franchise that stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead,” said a source close to the development.

In a recent interview, Ali was quoted saying, “I am dying to do it or rather I want to do it. This was a new genre for me and I learnt a lot of things while shooting for Tiger Zinda Hai. I want to polish that side of my skills and want to make a more contemporary international crossover Tiger 3. It is too early to talk over it. All of us, i.e. producer Aditya Chopra and the entire team, to make Tiger 3 after watching the final scene of Tiger Zinda Hai when Salman walks out of the phone boot. Even Salman and Katrina are charged up taking Tiger 3. Hopefully, after Bharat, it would be Tiger 3.”

Given Ali Abbas Zafar’s work mechanism, we can expect Tiger 3 to arrive by Christmas 2020, but this is mere speculation on our part. Are you excited to see Tiger and Zoya once again? Do let us know.

All of Salman’s films have either 2, 3 or 4 going forward in the film title. Pushing the boundaries of Indian cinema via sequels.

        • Everyone is jumping into sequel bandwagon with Don 3, ZNMD 2, Housefull 4, Golmaal 5 etc etc. But Salman is taking it to an extreme with 4 sequels out of his next 5 films.

If Aamir wants, he too can team up with Hirani for 3I sequel. It has the potential to be a mega blockbuster worldwide. But somehow, Mahabharata seems more interesting and challenging at this point.

    • Aamir might not retain his No 2 now as Salman may be No 1 to No 3 by end of this year. From next year, Aamir will be out from Top 5. Great career indeed.

Yup…and the following year, Aamir will be on the streets begging for anyone to give him any role. Poor chap.

Judwaa 2 Insane Television Run – Secret Superstar Does Well
    Thursday 08 March 2018 18.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Secret Superstar did well on television getting 60 lakh impressions although remains to be seen how it goes post its premiere. The film has beaten films like Baadshaho and Raees on television by a small margin which is very good as the film hardly holds any appeal for the wider audience in India.

It may not be too strong post the premiere but at least it found some sort of audience post theatrical as films of this type struggle post theatrical as they are for a limited audience and those who are interested in this cinema are a minority and watch it in the theatres.

Judwaa 2 has maintained its crazy run post theatrical release as its fifth screening gets nearly 50 lakh impressions. It is almost the same as the first screening of Secret Superstar. The total in five screenings is 4.21 crore, a figure only surpassed by Bahubali – The Conclusion over first five screenings.

The ratings of Judwaa 2 on its first five screenings are as follows. The numbers are impressions which are the number of television sets viewing the film.

    First – 1,52,66,00,000

    Second – 92,78,000

    Third – 63,78,000

    Fourth – 64,53,000

    Fifth – 47,59,000

    TOTAL – 4,21,34,00,000

Why do you find it upsetting? Just sit back, look, and laugh! They can create all the propaganda they want, but they can’t change the facts. I find it quite hilarious how they like to live in their little bubble, as far from reality as can be. Now and then a Padmaavat brings them down to Earth, but kissi ki fitrat to nahi badalti.
