Gold Has Good Advance – Highest For Akshay Kumar Starrer
    Tuesday 14 August 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gold has taken a strong advance and will be the first Akshay Kumar film to surpass 10 crore nett in advance sales. The previous best was Housefull 3 at around 7.50 crore nett. It is a five day weekend as compared to the a three day weekend for Housefull 3 but the advance is mainly for the first day while the other four days show advance figures which are less than the first day.

The film could get into in the top ten advances of all time if it can to 13 crore nett by the end of the day and this is possible. Its no match for the big even films like Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bahubali – The Conclusion or Sanju but this film is not that event film so a final 12-13 crore nett advance would be very good and would be higher than the likes of Raees and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

As far as the clash goes it looks like that Gold will lead in all circuits going by the advance though the on the day audience could make it tight in places like Bihar and Odisha as Gold is not really for that audience and Satyameva Jayate probably has more for that mass audience with action and music. But still even these circuits will be very close, the bigger circuits are a one horse race.

The advance for Satyameva Jayate is decent for the film it is as its more dependent on the day audience and her the advance is even more lopside for day one than Gold. The film is a so called mass film but its very Mumbai mass and it will be depending very much on Mumbai circuit and places like CP Berar, Bihar and CI. These type of mass film without gloss and stars has limited takers in the North.

The advance is reminiscent of the Raees and Kaabil clash and Gold is ahead of Raees (though some chains had no advance for Raees and only opened a few hours before release) while Satyameva Jayate is ahead of Kaabil and that despite Kaabil having a big star like Hrithik Roshan. Raees and Kaabil also had a five day weekend and going by advance Gold and Satyameva Jayate are on course to cover a higher number over five days though with a five day weekend the content and trend also comes into play.

If we look at the advance figures with a full day left (Tuesday) then Gold is more than double of Satyameva Jayate but if Satyameva Jayate can get a 5-6 crore nett advance that is still good for this film as these types hardly get a advance although it would have mainly come because of the Independence Day holiday. The advance of a Rocky Handsome or Force 2 would have hardly been more than 1.25 crore nett.

  3. Rewind – Greatest Indian Film Sholay Is 43 Years Old
    Tuesday 14 August 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The greatest and biggest motion picture in the history of Indian cinema Sholay will hit 43 years tomorrow on Independence Day. Sholay probably has some competition now in the form of Bahubali – The Conclusion considering what that film has done across India and after on television.

The difference is that Bahubali – The Conclusion had to be dubbed in Hindi to become so huge in the Hindi markets but Sholay smashed records of local films in South India in its original Hindi language format which is just insane. Also the jury is still out that will Bahubali – The Conclusion will be relevent in 20 years or 40 years time.

By relevant we dont mean that some people talking about the film or writing about it because this is even done with films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Parinda, Satya, Dil Chahta Hai, etc which were irrelevant when released for most of the country and ditto today. To be actually relevant you have to be watched and have a big audience and it remains to be seen what happens to Bahubali – The Conclusion in the time to come. At the moment with more than a year gone after release its a rage with huge audiences whenever it comes on television but that may not be the case in 10, 20 or 40 years time on the formats available for viewing at that time.

Sholay released to an unprecedented response though that is not what is generally believed as at the time their were a couple of trade magazines and basically these people thought it was a bad film so spread the word that it opened poorly when the collections told a completely different story with all records smashed. It was a bit like saying that Bahubali – The Conclusion has opened poorly last year but at that time they could actually get away with it because they actually had some takers in the industry and the media in general. In todays digital world this can never happen. It is hard to judge the opening compared to films today as numbers are today are far greater but there probably has not been many openings that have filled out every seat on day one (be it the August day ones in some circuits or October day ones in other places) barring maybe 50-60 seats. Even these missing ones will be more than compensated by so many centers going over capacity. So all in all the opening day would have easily been over 100% but it can only happen in India that a 110% or even 120% plus initial is called a poor opening.

The film opened on 40 cinemas in Mumbai and Ahmedabad on 15th August 1975 and barring the Drive In cinema in Ahmedabad every cinema recorded housefull collections and both cities saw the highest collections ever. These cities had records by socials like Dost (1974) and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974) and action films were not the best bets at the time but Sholay smashed records in Mumbai by a distance and Ahmedabad it got past Roti Kapada Aur Makaan despite releasing on one theater less.

A week later the film opened in East Punjab and in certain mass markets like East Punjab, UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Bihar there was a tradition for extra seats when a film was really accepted and got going but with a Dharmendra starrer who was at an unimaginable level at the box office at that time the extra seats came out on release. The film did not officially beat the record of Roti Kapada Aur Makaan in East Punjab on day one as it was on less theaters but unofficially it would have as the distributor gave a higher first week share than Roti Kapada Aur Makaan despite lower collections as the over capacity theaters had probably more than covered the ground.

It was also released in Mysore and this was market was not going to be the strongest for an action dacait film as the ones before had not set this circuit on fire but Sholay easily smashed the record collections of Dharmatma and Deewaar which both had collected 37,000 apprx in early 1975.

The first day figures of Sholay in circuits where it was released in August 1975 are as follows.

He is also Amitabh hater (He thinks of bachchan responsible for 1984) , so that is also understandable. And this article is serving all his goals. But again .. there is some truth about opening record which is completely spun by trade that time. So peace !!

Else till date i only knew that Sholay started very slow and in fact was a flop till the WoM kicked in.

Again perceptions can be formed that they don’t like X or Y. Same is formed about everyone here. In BO debates, its easy to form perceptions.

Talking about the same, Ranbir added that while he did not agree with Chopra, the statement was the producer’s point of view. But he as an actor does not regret doing any of the films that he has done till date. “I don’t agree with him. That’s his point of view. I don’t regret any film that I have done. Be it Bombay Velvet, Saawariya or Jagga Jasoos, they all came naturally from me. So, they will always be a part of me. 8. GOLD MOVIE REVIEW
    TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Updated: Aug 14, 2018, 04.45 PM IST
    Critic’s Rating:
    3.5/5
    Worth it’s weight in gold

‘Gold’ isn’t just a film on hockey, it’s also a period film that recreates an era long forgotten. More than that, it’s reminds us of the painful reality of partition and how that brutally tore apart our nation. The production design and costumes, which play an integral part in depicting the era, are top notch. The cinematography and the background score stand out with excellent finesse and technique. The hockey matches create a great amount of thrill, and even though you know the end result, you will find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat and rooting for team India all the way.

  15. I don’t rate JA at all as an actor. But the sad reality is that right now he is much ahead of Saif, Abhishek and Hashmi right now.

SJ is likely to take an opening at over 12cr today (according to some predictions), something which is out of reach for Saif and Abhishek these days. The last solos of Saif were opening at 1-1.5cr while Abhishek’s AIW opened at 2cr.

Even before Parmanu, JA’s action films consistently opened at around 4-4.5cr, very low figures, but Saif and Abhishek will take grab such an opening figure for any movie of theirs with both hands these days.

I think the key for JA has been his perseverance. He is a very limited actor, but he has stuck with the action genre with a vengeance. Kept working on it hoping something will work one day.

Abhishek on the other hand has been out of sight for too long. Saif has found it hard to get acceptance beyond rom-coms and when you are limited to that genre, age is one big issue.

This is the best day for these movies, first day Gold definitely lost 5-10 cr due to clash and less screens than what it deserved. The screenplay is very convenient and unable to engage viewer at any stage.Songs are misplaced and deter the pace of the film. Film bears a similarity with Chak De India but falls miserably compare to that .

Akshay Kumar is the weakest link of the film, don’t know what he was doing in the film. Even keeping aside his fake Bengali accent he isn’t convincing in the role . I couldnt even fathom his character . He is neither a coach nor a player, has nothing to do anything with hockey but still is the main protagonist on a film made on hockey.

In the 1960s, for a minimum of 15 Tests, four Indian batsmen had a higher batting average than Ajit Wadekar’s 34, whose contribution in winning causes – and low scoring matches – was far superior to that of his peers. In fact, for a minimum of 30 Tests, he emerges as India’s second-highest impact Test batsman. Wadekar was instrumental to India’s path breaking series wins over New Zealand and England away from home.

  27. Gold Takes A Big Lead Over Satyameva Jayate
    Wednesday 15 August 2018 22.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gold has taken a big lead over Satyameva Jayate on the first day as it looks to collect in the 25-26 crore nett region while Satyameva Jayate will collect in the 16-17 crore nett. Despite the big lead these are also strong collections for Satyameva Jayate. It was a big holiday for Independence Day which has given the collections a big boost.

Gold is easily the highest opening for an Akshay Kumar starrer with previous best at 17 crore nett and for John Abraham the best his solo starrer had ever done before was Force 2 at 5.75 crore nett apprx so he has also beaten his best by a huge distance. Gold will come out higher in nearly all the circuits except maybe some of the smaller circuits.

Despite the big starts for both films, the jury will still be out as we go into working days before the weekend so there will be drops and the films will have to find their levels from these high numbers and then sustain from those levels.

It remains to be seen what happens over the next few days but Gold has won the initial battle due to the stardom of Akshay Kumar. Satyameva Jayate was a mass film which had action and music while Gold was more of a content film which held less appeal for the mass audience but that is where stardom comes into play.

Gold really had no right to be in the same range as Satyameva Jayate in places like Bihar, CI, Rajasthan and CP Berar but due to the presence of Akshay Kumar the collections are very similar and that too on Independence Day when the single screen crowd really comes out. If it was a Rowdy Rathore type then obviously its a different story but Gold is not that. But this where stardom comes into play and big stars can bring crowds in markets where the film may not actually be their type.

Mumbai and Delhi / UP will be best performers for Gold. Both films have taken a hit in East Punjab due to a Punjabi film. Satyamev Jayate will be best in CPCI and Bihar while Maharashtra cities like Nasik, Kohlapur, Malegaon, Sangli etc have also seen very good collections. Both combined it will be biggest opening day in the history of Hindi cinema beating the 40 crore nett apprx of Bahubali – The Conclusion though that was a single film.

There is a vacuum there since the prime days of Sunny Deol. Salman has been doing a few masala action movies now and then and it has certainly benefited him a lot.

I feel the likes of Hrithik, Abhishek and Akshay Kumar lately have been wrong in consistently staying away from action movies.

Now, Tiger and JA are scoring big there.

Imo he was as okay as ever in the film, not his best but certainly not his worst. As for his accent, still more convincing than AK’s desperate attempt at turning Punjabi in RDB.

  42. A trade source says, “The Dhoom 4 shoot will commence early next year and will go on for 130 days so Adi is keen to lock cast and crew by this year. Major parts of the film will be shot in Dubai. While a reference poster with Salman had even been made now it seems that it’s not working out with him. This is a recent development in the last few weeks, especially post-Race 3. Apparently, one of the conditions that Salman had laid down with Aditya Chopra was that he would not be in a single scene with Abhishek Bachchan (given Salman’s past history with Abhishek’s wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) in Dhoom 4. The writing team was apparently racking its brain on how to come to terms with this creative change because Abhishek (who plays ACP Jai Dixit) forms a crucial part of the cast.”

The Film has found acceptance from the masses as the B and C centres didn’t drop much on the second-day but it remains to be see how far do they carry the film. The film has been made on a moderate budget and the revenues from ancillary sources have already made the film a profitable venture for the producers, T-Series. However, that doesn’t really matter as the distribution rights of the film has been sold on outright bases to Kumar Mangat. The trade sources confirm that Mangat has fetched the All India Distribution Rights of Satyameva Jayate for Rs 22.00 crore plus the print cost, which means the landing cost for distributors would be around Rs 25 crore.

From the producers’ point of view, the film has been made on a budget of Rs 44 crore (including publicity), which the producers have already recovered from sale of theatrical, music, satellite and digital rights. Given the rate at which the film is faring at the box office currently, it should reach the break even point by Saturday or at max Sunday, and the overflows for distributors will start coming in from Sunday or at max Monday.

But, by and large, British actors are better equipped to play just any kind of role. They tend to display ‘notes’ which are largely absent in the American repertoire (that is, if acting were to be compared to music composition).

If I had to praise Hollywood, I’d say the 70s was the best decade for cinema by a long-shot. Pacino, De Niro, Gene Hackman (The Conversation remains a favourite), Jeff Bridges, Nicholson, Duvall, Dustin Hoffman, the second coming of Brando, Coppola, Scorsese…it was brimming with talent and fresh ideas. And I don’t agree with the Aamir – Irfan comparison. British actors are fully capable of being leading men in commercial blockbusters. One could also count on them bringing a lot more gravitas to such roles.

        • Agree that American actors are more geared towards commercial factors because of the way HW studios work. Also agree with Saket’s views on Leo and Damon – not a fan of either myself.

I can appreciate Leo’s body of work as much as Aamir’s. And both of them are ‘rehearsed actors’ instead of natural ones (IMO). However, where Aamir scores is that every director delivers their best films when they work with him. Whereas, Leo just works with the best directors around and adds good films to his name. So the gap between them is huge.

Btw, Nolan insists on signing Brit actors. Beyond his obvious racist stance, he publicly defends his casting by claiming brit actors are the best in business. Take that HW! Lol

Excerpt: “…why so many good American roles have been going to English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Australian, and Canadian actors. The phenomenon may have reached its unignorable peak in last year’s docudrama Selma: the parts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, Governor George Wallace, and President Lyndon B. Johnson were all played by Brits.

Film audiences, of course, have long since accustomed themselves to seeing nonnative speakers of American—Daniel Day-Lewis, Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, Clive Owen, and their international ilk—confidently impersonating Yanks on the silver screen. Now the migrant thespians are starting to dominate stateside TV, too. On any given night of channel surfing or Netflix browsing in the past few seasons, you’re likely to have happened upon an English actor or two playing a 100 percent born-and-bred American: Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, and Lennie James on The Walking Dead, Hugh Dancy on Hannibal, Charlie Cox on Daredevil, Freddie Highmore and Olivia Cooke on Bates Motel, Damian Lewis and Rupert Friend on Homeland, Eddie Marsan on Ray Donovan, Janet McTeer on Battle Creek, Dominic West and Ruth Wilson on The Affair, or Hugh Laurie on House. You might also have come across the odd Welshman (Michael Sheen on Masters of Sex), Scot (Alan Cumming on The Good Wife), Irishman (Colin Farrell on True Detective), Canadian (Taylor Kitsch on Friday Night Lights), or Australian (Robert Taylor on Longmire), each of them with an eerily undetectable accent. Crisis or not, this is getting embarrassing.”

Presumably she wanted to preserve the authenticity of the books, but not for a second does anyone miss the presence of any American actor in the entire series.

On the contrary, the series is richer because of the presence of Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman (who was wonderful as Snape), Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith and Ralph Fienes …among other spectacular actors.

Emma Thompson is wonderful as the eccentric Sybill Trelawney. I already mentioned Alan Rickman as Snape…Maggie Smith as Professor McNoggle. Michael Gambon/Richard Harris as Dumbledore…the list is quite big.

In fact, the last two parts (Deathly Hallows) are very good mood pieces for adults, not just children. After part 4, the movies can be enjoyed by adults looking for a good dose of quality cinema.

Rs 115 to 129 crore: Average
Rs 130 to 145 crore: Hit
Rs 146 to 170 crore: Super Hit

Sources close to the project informed us that the makers of Kedarnath want to avoid a clash with the South mega budget sci-fi film 2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in lead roles. 2.0 will be releasing in the same week as Kedarnath, that is on November 29 and the latter will be hitting the big screen on November 30. Furthermore, the source also added that from November to December, there are only big releases coming in.

With Super 30, Thackeray and now Cheat India and Manikarnika releasing together, all four films will be affected drastically at the box office. Keeping this in mind, the makers of Super 30 have decided on pushing the release of the Hrithik Roshan starrer to help maximise the reach and eventual business prospects of the film.” When prodded further about details of the new date, the source continues, “Right now talks are still on, once done a new date will be fixed and announced as well. But as of now, Super 30 will not clash at the box office with Thackeray.”

Not a single performance stands out. Nishikant Kamat is pretty appalling. Harshvardhan Kapoor is earnest but unremarkable. Maybe that was the point.

There isn’t much point to the movie though. It’s the most confused film (after Bombay Velvet) to have come out of the Motwane/Kashyap stable. Disappointed.

Oh well, at least 2 songs from the film are quite good.

    • It doesn’t work as a satire; it certainly doesn’t work as a social commentary, and for a superhero film, it’s really odd. It’s more interested in deconstructing the superhero genre, which as an idea isn’t wrong at all, but the execution is sometimes mindnumbingly poor.

Some of the ghisa-pita lines that Nishikant Kamat has to spout are just…cringe-worthy!

In the end, the major flaw of the film lies in the fact that it takes itself too seriously. With uninspired casting and some really poor writing, which comes as a shock, the film kind of chokes on its own vomit.

I’m being very harsh here, but this isn’t expected from the director of Lootera, Udaan & Sacred Games.

    Sunday 19 August 2018 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gold and Satyameva Jayate have done well on Sunday with both films showing growth of around 30-35%. The collections of Gold will go to around 15.75-16 crore nett while Satyamev Jayate will be around 9.75-10 crore nett as per early estimates.

Gold has shown solid growth for three days since the big fall on Thursday to record a weekend of 70 crore nett plus and Satyameva Jayate has seen a turnaround on Sunday for a weekend of 50 crore nett plus. Its a healthy extended weekend figure of 120 crore nett combined with the latter doing more than expected.

Gold has practically doubled its Thursday number on Sunday and has done well to get this far considering the huge 70% fall on Thursday. But the main thing was it got upward momentum which has happened and now its about the crucial Monday and weekday business which will be helped by a holiday on Wednesday though it has to sustain to really get benefit of that.

Satyameva Jayate has done well over its first weekend with over 50 crore nett which is a big total for this film. The film is through even though it has not gained much over the weekend and has chances to emerge a HIT even with just a normal trend on the weekdays.

For some who aren’t aware of it already, there was a time when Aamir was being compared to Hanks. Both, for looking a bit similar to the latter and for his work ethic.

Aamir admitted in some interviews during the period of Gump/Apollo 13 that he was a fan of Hanks.

Maybe the Forrest Gump has remained in Aamir’s mind forever. The film has so much in it, apart from the marginal intelligence bit of the main character.

Despite the lack of novelty and a few silly moments (mockery in a Buddhist monastery, a drunk team manager dancing like a buffoon), the film has enough moments of inspiration and well choreographed hockey sequences to keep the audiences entertained. The performances are borderline decent and par for the course while the screenplay oscillates from genuinely good to lackluster in parts. Overall I’d rate it a 7/10.

  85. Gold Recovers Momentum Over Weekend
    Monday 20 August 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gold which had an excellent start on day one saw a big drop on day two but has recovered the momentum over the weekend with solid growth over the weekend. The film has grossed 70.50 crore nett over its extended weekend with Sunday going back over 15 crore nett when Thursday was just 8 crore nett.

The film has done well in places like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkatta. The mass markets are decent as its competing with Satyameva Jayate with similar collections but thats mainly due to the star power of Akshay Kumar as the film is not the type for the likes of UP, Bihar and CI.

The first five day business of Gold is as follows.
    Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx
    Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx
    Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx
    Saturday – 12,00,00,000 apprx
    Sunday – 15,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 70,50,00,000 apprx

The film needs to sustain on Monday and the film will then have a good run for a couple of weeks as multiplexes are generally doing pretty good business especially on Saturday and Sunday. The first day was a given. It can also get the advantage of Bakri Eid on Wednesday.

        • I think SMJ is a hit at the very least if one takes into account the costs. No one expected it open that well. A 20cr opener is for the likes of the Khans and maybe Ranbir, not for a JA action film.

I guess that during the week days, SMJ will earn almost as much as Gold. The latter, being a multiplex film will make the difference during the holidays and week ends. This has been the trend till here.

SMJ is a hit at the very least. Gold has some work to do to become one. But it has done alright as well.

          Like

        • but no one ever raises the opposite question. If it’s possible for John Abraham (or others in comparable contexts) to get such numbers on a good day, yes it’s a surprise for sure, but it also proves (and I’m repeating an old point once more) how many of the numbers on the biggest films/stars etc (initial, gross..) are really under performances. An analogous example would be Avengers opening to 100m and doing 350 when it actually has the potential to open to 200 and do 650.

Secondly (here too I’m repeating things) there are films that are safe or better based on their initials and costs and so on. But there is a distinction between economics and films that have actually been liked by the audience. So a film that trends poorly can still be good on the economics but that doesn’t mean it’s a film that has been liked. Not that I’m arguing against SMJ. Many of the big films have this kind of trending or worse on much higher totals.

On Thugs, whatever came out I have mixed opinion, I hope it turns out wrong once trailer is out.
      1) TBH, I dont like title Thugs of Hindostan, it is better be called Thugs. Thug is derogatory abusive word now. But, it was a clan who had conflicts with British, they were popularized as some inhuman looters while the truth is they were fighting against British the actual looters. So, It makes sense to name it Thugs. There is no such thing like Thugs of Hoindostan, Thugs of USA or Europe… blah blah.
      2) I don’t want to see song or dance in this movie. I just want a serious movie straight to the point. Regular mass type song and dance will ruin. There was few images out with Katrina and Aamir in Dhoom3 kinda dance setup. D3 has such bad memory that I don’t want to see Katrina. Aamir has redeem himself after Dangal especially.
      3) Director Vijay Krishna Acharya will be last choice to director any amir movie. After Tashan and D3, he backfired twice. Yrf gave him chance to complete 3 movies deal probably. Lets hope he surprises this time.
      And
      4) amir , please no extra shedding tears. No every movie is supposed to make emotional. Please no forced emotional melodrama. Let it be organic if story allows. And please don’t try to play extra smart to emerge extra heroism like final scene in Dangal where Mahavir Singh is locked up. That was Theo nly negative aspect in dangal.

Media, PR of Aamir himself, everytime he promotes movie, he promotes it like it is the first and only thing in your to do list. Many so called actors have become superstars just by virtue of great promotion, PR/marketing, Big festival, holding first two week and 3 weeks post release.

But to declare that Aamir has become a superstar due to marketing and promotion is bloody unfair. A film needs to be promoted so that people are made aware about what is on offer.

And as if other Hindi stars promote any less. Aamir’s promotion is worth it, because his films are worth it. Even Secret Superstar which did not do too well in India, despite appreciation it garnered. It is my considered view that the film could have touched at least rs 75 crores, if only the negativity against Zaira- Aamir had not made a joint impact on the film’s box office. Plus of course the other film, the rival that drew the audience, in the comedy Golmaal Again. I have watched only the firstGolmaal and disliked it, but the series draws audiences in, so good for them, but bad for sensitive smaller films that compete for attention.

  93. Gold had a big drop on Monday as it collected 3.75-4 crore nett. The drop is 60% from Friday when the normal drop is 50%. It is the sixth day so you can allow a little bit more than the normal 50% but 60% is going a bit far. It dropped more than Satyameva Jayate as it had a higher ratio of business coming from multiplexes where ticket rates drop on Monday.

Also the film is just for metros going by the Monday figures and if the other cities recorded respectable collections over the first five days it was because of the mass pull of Akshay Kumar. The film is now basically just relying on metros barring Bakri Eid on Wednesday where other cities may get a lift. The collections after six days are 74.25 crore nett for Gold

The first six day business of Gold is as follows.

    Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 12,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 15,25,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 3,85,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 74,35,00,000 apprx

The extended first week business should go to around 85-86 crore nett as Wednesday should get a lift in business but the film really needed to be holding better on Monday and go over the 90 crore nett mark for week one..

Sajid (director Sajid Khan) has been on a recce in Rajasthan for the past few weeks and the team has been working on creating rustic looks for the cast who will be from the times when kings ruled.”

She reportedly plans to start shooting for the film from mid-2019.

“Priyanka has definitely given them the green signal for the next instalment of the Krrish franchise. She was a part of the first two Krrish films, and when Rakeshji sounded her out about Krrish 4, she happily agreed to do it,” the report quoted a source close to Hrithik’s family as saying.

“Since she’s such a big global star now, Rakeshji wasn’t sure if she would want to be part of a desi franchise in which she doesn’t play the main character. But Priyanka’s association with the Roshans goes back a long way,” the source added.

    1. Aamir Khan to co-produce and direct Akshay Kumar in Mogul.

    Source: https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/aamir-khan-mogul-bhushan-kumar-5291176/

Bhushan Kumar, in an interview to Mid Day recently revealed that actor Aamir Khan, also the co-producer of Mogul has been an important part of the film’s scripting. Divulging details about the biopic on his father, Bhushan said, “The story is almost ready. Aamir Khan is immersed in the entire scripting process. Subhash Kapoor (director) has spent the past one-and-a-half years researching every detail about my father’s life. The film will start right from when he was a college student to how he sold juice in Daryaganj, Delhi, to how he became a game changer in the music industry.”

Recently, at the IMAX trailer launch of Gold, Akshay was asked whom he thinks is the best alternative for playing Gulshan Kumar in Mogul, to which he replied, “No one besides me.”

I don’t think Akshay can say no to an Aamir khan script. That would be sin. And sorry, Ranbir again in a biopic is not happening.

    2. Aamir Khan to co-produce Mahabharat pentalogy with Akshay

Osho, forrest gump…these are peanuts compared to the mammoth storytelling of Mahabharat. No way Aamir is going to let it go. He will probably start after Mogul. Mogul will see Khan and Kumar bonding and doing Mahabharat together. This time Aamir acting and Akshay producing. Mahabharat is something that bollywood cannot ignore now. In this scriptless world, there is one lying since last 35,000 years.

    • Sir Montana,
      You are lying about me.

I acknowledged the dual crash of Gold in this thread. BTW Wed>Tues>Mon but largely because of holidays. Movie has been appreciated but not to the extent one thought after day 1 opening which was stunning. Unfortunately Gold couldn’t tap on to this wonderful holiday period to nett over 150. So that way its a disappointment.

Padman is way above any other good movie your favourite actor (whoever he is in Hindi, Kannada, etc) has give or will ever give.
Toilet is an ace. With Padman both the movies succeeded in social impact. Toilet of course became superhit while Padman is a Hit, which could be considered extraordinary given all situations combined.

Earlier Jolly LLB, Rustom were superb movies. The latter fetched the National Awards for Akshay.

      Airlift was a masterpiece.

The list goes on. The change started from the Blockbuster/superrhit movie Oh My God where Akshay played an important role of Lord Krishna. Then onwards most of his movies have does exceedingly well.

Gold may also do well but is the first disappointment for me (even thought it will end at 120-125). Industry had expected 150+

GOLD did 70 cr+ in first 5 days extended weekend which implies an average mean of 14 cr per day. If we consider this number as a “real value” non holiday day 1 number for the film, a lifetime collection of 110-112 cr would not be as bad as it looks with a 25 cr day 1 number.

  116. Its going to be a bloodbath at BO this Christmas …

    *********
FORBES – This Christmas, Hollywood Will Release Eight Huge Movies In Eight Days

Yesterday was Aug. 21, 2018. That means we are just under four months away from Dec. 21, 2018. That date may be arbitrary in its significance, but it is the opening date for a whopping six major studio releases all hoping to cash in on the prime “Christmas-to-New Year’s” holiday blitz. With no Star Wars sucking up the attention and box office bucks, and with Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman proving that a big crowd-pleaser can thrive even against a 1600lb gorilla during the holiday season, every studio is tempting their fate on essentially the same date. It’s going to show that the audience can handle a bunch of big movies even during the Christmas season or it’s going to be a game-changing bloodbath.

Every Christmas season is relatively crowded, with one or two event movies, a handful of studio programmers and various Oscar season flicks expanding or platforming to rack up huge per-theater-averages before going wide in January. That’s how it has always been for at least as long as I’ve followed this stuff. The pre-Christmas weekend is the best weekend of the year, where even a small-scale flick like Mouse Hunt can leg it to $60m from a $6m debut and where Star Wars: The Force Awakens can open with $248m and still leg it to $937m domestic. Let us also remember the Peter Jackson Middle Earth flicks and the James Cameron juggernauts. Christmas weekend is no slouch either, so sayeth Waiting to Exhale, Night at the Museum or Sing.

What’s different this year is three-fold. First, almost every major flick launching on the week of Dec. 14 and Dec. 21 is a major event film that qualifies as a somewhat make-or-break release for the studio. Second, due to the early influx of “big” movies kicking off in January of 2019 (Hellboy on Jan. 11, Glass on Jan. 19), there won’t be as much time for the Christmas biggies (and the expanding Oscar flicks) to leg it out. Third, we know that audiences aren’t necessarily going to flock to non-event films even during the holiday season, which is what doomed All the Money in the World last year. Every studio is using what may be the last no-Star Wars/no-Avatar Christmas for a while to load up.

Sony and Universal/Comcast Corp. are doubling up over the holiday season, while Fox, Paramount/Viacom Inc., Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. and Walt Disney are each launching a very important year-end biggie. So, let’s meet our contestants!

Sony has their animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse launching on Dec. 14 and then the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy Holmes and Watson launching on Dec. 21. Neither film is a do-or-die release, but Sony would like to have a potentially successful Venom and a potentially successful Miles Morales Spidey flick to show that they can in-fact make hit Spider-Man movies outside of their current MCU-affiliated iteration. It will be interesting to see if we get a Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer attached to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (if not Venom) and how that trailer will sell itself without spoiling Avengers 4.

Universal will launch the Peter Jackson-produced The Mortal Engines on Dec. 14 and then Robert Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen on Dec. 21. The former will (again) try to relaunch the sub-genre that is the YA dystopian fantasy after several false starts. Yes, it looks great and Jackson brings an obvious pedigree, but it will be a “new-to-you” and new-to-cinema franchise amid a sea of more well-known IP. The Steve Carell true-life fantasy (about a victim of a hate crime who recovers through the use of model cities) is Universal’s second big Oscar hopeful alongside Damien Chazelle’s First Man, but it is merely hoping to perform more like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ($188m worldwide) than Saving Mr. Banks ($117m worldwide).

Speaking of Mr. Banks, Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns was supposed to launch on Christmas Day. But Disney being Disney, they decided to spike the punch just for spite and drop their Emily Blunt/Lin-Manuel Miranda sequel on Dec. 19. That essentially ruined everyone else’s Christmas as the other biggies launching on Dec. 21 were expecting to have some breathing room between their big pre-Christmas tentpoles and Disney’s holiday-skewed family flick. To be fair, Mary Poppins Returns will stand out from the crowd by being a frothy musical fantasy, as opposed to its more action-packed competition. It is still a vital release for a studio that needs to show that they can deliver live-action hits outside of the Lucasfilm/MCU/live-action adaptation of an animated classic sandbox.

Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel will try to position itself as the next Avatar, since it’s produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In this IP-driven era, its relatively cult source material (a manga) puts it at a disadvantage, but Fox will try to sell the Rosa Salazar sci-fi flick as the unique fantasy spectacular of the season. I’ve been half-expecting Alita: Battle Angel to move, except I’m not sure where it would go. 2019 is already super-crowded, although it can roll the dice in the post-Thanksgiving slot. That slot is usually empty, but The Last Samurai ($456 million worldwide in 2003) proved that it didn’t have to be. Maybe Disney will have something to say about the Fox biggie squaring off against the Disney biggie.

Alita: Battle Angel can’t sell the “ass-kicking female hero” card as a unique variable, as both The Mortal Engines and Bumblebee are female-led action fantasies. Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Bumblebee is a prequel to a franchise that just died. There will be no Transformers expanded universe, and the writers’ room has been disbanded after the lousy ($133 million domestic/$605m worldwide) performance of Transformers: The Last Knight. This Hailee Steinfeld 1980’s-set prequel looks cheaper and smaller-in-scale than the Michael Bay spectacles. But rather than merely offering a different seasoning, it is now responsible for salvaging what was once Paramount’s crown jewel IP. It looks fine (think Monster Truck or Iron Giant), and it’s hoping to be the Jumanji 2 to whatever becomes this year’s Last Jedi.

And that brings us to the movie that, if I had to place a bet, is going to make a run at being this year’s court-appointed Christmas season giant. Or, perhaps a better comparison, if Last Jedi was Avatar, then Aquaman wants to be this year’s Tron: Legacy. Ironically, against the female-fronted likes of Alita, Bumblebee, Mary Poppins and Mortal Engines, the James Wan-directed DC Films flick stands out as an unapologetically macho male-driven action flick. You don’t need me to explain what’s at stake for the DC Films franchise with this Jason Momoa/Amber Heard/Jason Patrick undersea adventure. Wonder Woman has a critical and commercial hit, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were critical whiffs but commercial wins, while Justice League was “none of the above.”

If James Wan delivers a crowd-pleasing “Indiana Jones meets Lord of the Rings, but underwater” adventure flick (and then Shazam delights), then the new DC Films narrative can be “Hey, we make solid solo superhero flicks!”. At this point, they have mostly stumbled with the ensemble flicks, while the stand-alone likes of Man of Steel and Wonder Woman have at least felt like coherent, as-intended movies. Man of Steel has issues, but unlike Suicide Squad and Justice League, it doesn’t feel like it was stitched together with duct tape in the executive boardroom. That means we probably won’t ever get that Justice League 2: Challenge of the Legion of Doom that was cruelly teased at the end of JL, but c’est la vie.

In the first Christmas season without a Star Wars or Hobbit movie since 2011, everything is up in the air. We have frankly never had a situation where almost every major studio (it’s not too late for Lionsgate to move Robin Hood to Dec. 21 just for kicks) has a big and arguably very important release dropping within the same week. Now the Christmas season can support a lot of big product, but these are uncharted waters. Now for the record, which movie comes out on top (or in proverbial last place) is less important than each filmmaking enough to justify itself, but unless one or more of these flicks flee to less-crowded waters, this is going to be a hell of a holiday season.

At the very least, the movie theaters themselves are going to be very happy. And my weekend box office posts are going to be so long and filled with typos. I apologize in advance!

  121. Eid Gives Gold A Lift
    Thursday 23 August 2018 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gold got a a lift from Bakr Eid as it grossed 6 crore nett on Wednesday. This has taken the eight day total of the film to 85 crore nett which is decent. The film has a trend of doing better on the holidays and tends to go low on the other days. The first day was very strong and then it did well again on Sunday and Bakr Eid.

There will be drop in collections tomorrow as it come off a holiday and remains to be seen how big this drop is as this will determine the extended first week number. The film has done best in Mumbai (except Gujarat), Delhi / UP, West Bengal and Mysore. The collections in mass circuits have got a lift over the last two days but in the second week the likes of CPCI and Bihar will low. Surprisingly the film has done better than Satyameva Jayate over the Eid period despite that film having more for the Muslim audience.

The growth for Gold has been better over the last two days. The first eight day business of Gold is as follows.

    Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx

  122. Satyameva Jayate Continues To Do Well
    Thursday 23 August 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Satyameva Jayate continued to do well as it collected 5 crore nett on its eight day as it got a boost due to Bakr Eid. The total of the film stands at 62.50 crore nett which is a very good number for this film. There will be a drop in collections tomorrow and probably in week two also but even then it is sure to emerge a HIT.

This film will the biggest HIT for John Abraham as the solo lead although Welcome Back can also be called a solo lead as the other leads were more character actors rather than leads but problem is film was driven by those charcters. Its a big result for Satyameva Jayate and the Friday number will tell how far the film can go.

The first eight day business of Satyameva Jayate is as follows.

    Wednesday – 18,50,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 7,50,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 7,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 7,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 9,75,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 3,35,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 3,75,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

  125. Box Office Prediction: Two distinct films release this Friday – Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi and Genius. Both belong to different genres are aiming at set audiences. While former is catering to family audiences, latter is targeted at youth. The good part about both the films is that they can find traction at multiplexes as well as single screens and that too across A, B as well as C centres.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is the sequel to Happy Bhag Jayegi which was a successful film. The Mudassar Aziz directed film was released exactly two years ago and though it had started slow, there was good traction over a period of time. Now producers Krishika Lulla and Aanand L. Rai have scaled up the film further and incorporated the whole China angle to it. Moreover, Sonakshi Sinha has joined Jimmy Sheirgill as well in the Happy endeavour which makes the film even bigger.

On the other hand Genius is directed by veteran filmmaker Anil Sharma who has been around for over three decades now and delivered quite a few action blockbusters. Now that he is launching his son Utkarsh with the action-musical, he has left no stones unturned to make this debut a biggie. Himesh Reshammiya’s music for the film has been liked too and the masala flavour should attract the gentry.

  126. I watched GOLD yesterday.

    My Gold Review:

Gold movie is based on India’s win in 1935 at Berlin Olympics as British India Team and then in 1948 at London Olympics as Independent India Team.

It is told from the eyes of Tapan Das, played by Akshay Kumar. Tapan is a crazy bengali who is passionate about Team India Hockey winning Gold at Olympics. His passion starts from the win at Berlin Olympics when he realises that one day his team will win for Independent India.

However the next two Olympics are not held due to world war. He is shattered and becomes alcoholic. His wife played by the fiesty Mouny Roy supports him despite getting irritated of his aimless wilderness. During this time he works for wrestling team, but with little success. He knows his life mean hockey and only hockey. He is frustrated till he reads in a newspaper that London Olympics is confirmed in 1948.

His passion is reignited and the story to scout for sponsors, coach, players begins. The story covers the pain of India’s partition and thereby him losing key players including the captain to Pakistan….Akshay is able to bring forth the frustration, struggle, pain in the character of Tapan Das. He speaks bengali in a funny way which works big time as he does it with elan without appearing caricaturish. Any other actor would have failed. Infact, his bengali act could go down as the most memorable from any non-bengali actor in the history of Hindi cinema.

Akshay Kumar is the soul of the movie. He is the reason why the team was able to go to London, play unitedly and he uses his experience to help in tactical hockey. He can be considered as architect of Indian Hockey.

The movie tackles several issues prevalent at the time of independence.

The star cast is superb. Amit Sadh plays a thakur of a province and effectively shows his difficulty in adjusting to commands and democratic ways. His tussle with his own ego is well scripted.
Sunny Kaushal as Himmat Singh plays a great character of a hot headed Sardaar who gets to play only the finals. His frustration of not being included in the playing eleven and his confrontation with the vice captain looks genuine. He is supremely talented and we will be hearing more about him. His look is similar to Farhan’s look as Milkha Singh.

Vineet Kumar Singh who plays the captain of Tampan’s eleven only to chose Pakistan over india, is superb. Nowhere one feels him taking a wrong decision. In fact the movie succeeds big time in showcasing the pain of every muslims who left India for Pakistan.

The movie has a brilliant second half. Before the movie i had thought that comparison with Chak De would be there. But while watching the film, there is no scope for comparision. Both the movies were as different as Dangal/Sultan were in the backdrop of wrestling.

Just for the sake of pleasure, let me compare Chak De India with GOLD. For me Chak De is the best sports movie ever made. It’s above Lagaan/Dangal/Sultan. The feelings were genuine and hockey as a sports is definitely the best to watch after football.

Chak De remains my favourite. That would be 6/5 (>100% satisfaction). Dangal was 5/5, Sultan was 4.5/5

    Gold is 4/5

    A must watch patriotic entertainer!!!

I have never watched an Akki movie in theater – never! however have seen lot of his movies on DVDs/net – i can understand ur enthusiasm for ur favorite star. Akki is a good actor but he does not take the interest in overall product – that keeps him in mediocre BO brackets – and he is ok with it – becoz he wants to do 5-7 films a year – that is fine. I think he is quite a humble human being and the hardship he has seen (he was a waiter) keeps him working harder and harder……so as long as the sun shines….make the hey!

    • Everyone here is convinced that whatever chakki kumar does is gold standard. But isnt it time for him to deliver beyond 125 cr range???

      Like

      • He certainly does need to deliver it. But he does deliver those 100-130cr range 3 or 4 times a year. To go above that, he will need to work in a bigger budget movie made on a larger scale.

Such a film will probably certainly take more time. I do think the model Akshay Kumar is working in should be the least of our concerns. Producers and distributors are regularly making money with his films. He keeps the wheel turning.

He can’t challenge the likes of Aamir or Salman with this model.

But still regularly making some of these 30-50cr range medium budget films work is not easy. One could see with SS or DZ that it’s not easy to make these small to medium budget films earn big in India.

No wonder the 300cr plus movies are films like Bahubali, Dangal, TZH, PK, Sanju or Padmaavat, films made on huge canvas and they took years in production.

But another fact is that from what I gather, Gold is hardly a tremendous film as well. It seems an above average film that will likely be above average at the BO. It earns what it deserves.

Akshay Kumar has been doing good films for a while now. But he hasn’t yet gone that step further to deliver a superlatively fabulous film. For that, he will need to devote more time on all aspects of a film.

  129. Not arguing against those constantly harping that Gold and SMJ are BO hits. By Taran’s figures Gold has done nearly 90 cr in extended week one of 9 days. SMJ has done 75 cr in the same period. Together the business has been a whopping 165 cr! Distributors, exhibitors, producers, stars and their fans are all happy.

However, I will be v surprised if either of these 2 ‘hits’ gather more than 12 cr each in second weekend. That IMO is going to be the true measure of audience acceptance – no matter how much you twist the story otherwise.

Gold and SMJ wont go beyond 115 cr and 100 cr respectively.

  131. On conclusion one can easily say that SMJ has done far better than Gold keeping into consideration the budget as well as starcast. Gold at the best may get an above average tag whereas, SMJ is heading towards superhit status. In short John has won the battle against Akshay despite being a low profile actor/ star.
