Gold Has Good Advance – Highest For Akshay Kumar Starrer
Tuesday 14 August 2018 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Gold has taken a strong advance and will be the first Akshay Kumar film to surpass 10 crore nett in advance sales. The previous best was Housefull 3 at around 7.50 crore nett. It is a five day weekend as compared to the a three day weekend for Housefull 3 but the advance is mainly for the first day while the other four days show advance figures which are less than the first day.
The film could get into in the top ten advances of all time if it can to 13 crore nett by the end of the day and this is possible. Its no match for the big even films like Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bahubali – The Conclusion or Sanju but this film is not that event film so a final 12-13 crore nett advance would be very good and would be higher than the likes of Raees and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
As far as the clash goes it looks like that Gold will lead in all circuits going by the advance though the on the day audience could make it tight in places like Bihar and Odisha as Gold is not really for that audience and Satyameva Jayate probably has more for that mass audience with action and music. But still even these circuits will be very close, the bigger circuits are a one horse race.
The advance for Satyameva Jayate is decent for the film it is as its more dependent on the day audience and her the advance is even more lopside for day one than Gold. The film is a so called mass film but its very Mumbai mass and it will be depending very much on Mumbai circuit and places like CP Berar, Bihar and CI. These type of mass film without gloss and stars has limited takers in the North.
The advance is reminiscent of the Raees and Kaabil clash and Gold is ahead of Raees (though some chains had no advance for Raees and only opened a few hours before release) while Satyameva Jayate is ahead of Kaabil and that despite Kaabil having a big star like Hrithik Roshan. Raees and Kaabil also had a five day weekend and going by advance Gold and Satyameva Jayate are on course to cover a higher number over five days though with a five day weekend the content and trend also comes into play.
If we look at the advance figures with a full day left (Tuesday) then Gold is more than double of Satyameva Jayate but if Satyameva Jayate can get a 5-6 crore nett advance that is still good for this film as these types hardly get a advance although it would have mainly come because of the Independence Day holiday. The advance of a Rocky Handsome or Force 2 would have hardly been more than 1.25 crore nett.
Rewind – Greatest Indian Film Sholay Is 43 Years Old
Tuesday 14 August 2018 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
The greatest and biggest motion picture in the history of Indian cinema Sholay will hit 43 years tomorrow on Independence Day. Sholay probably has some competition now in the form of Bahubali – The Conclusion considering what that film has done across India and after on television.
The difference is that Bahubali – The Conclusion had to be dubbed in Hindi to become so huge in the Hindi markets but Sholay smashed records of local films in South India in its original Hindi language format which is just insane. Also the jury is still out that will Bahubali – The Conclusion will be relevent in 20 years or 40 years time.
By relevant we dont mean that some people talking about the film or writing about it because this is even done with films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Parinda, Satya, Dil Chahta Hai, etc which were irrelevant when released for most of the country and ditto today. To be actually relevant you have to be watched and have a big audience and it remains to be seen what happens to Bahubali – The Conclusion in the time to come. At the moment with more than a year gone after release its a rage with huge audiences whenever it comes on television but that may not be the case in 10, 20 or 40 years time on the formats available for viewing at that time.
Sholay released to an unprecedented response though that is not what is generally believed as at the time their were a couple of trade magazines and basically these people thought it was a bad film so spread the word that it opened poorly when the collections told a completely different story with all records smashed. It was a bit like saying that Bahubali – The Conclusion has opened poorly last year but at that time they could actually get away with it because they actually had some takers in the industry and the media in general. In todays digital world this can never happen. It is hard to judge the opening compared to films today as numbers are today are far greater but there probably has not been many openings that have filled out every seat on day one (be it the August day ones in some circuits or October day ones in other places) barring maybe 50-60 seats. Even these missing ones will be more than compensated by so many centers going over capacity. So all in all the opening day would have easily been over 100% but it can only happen in India that a 110% or even 120% plus initial is called a poor opening.
The film opened on 40 cinemas in Mumbai and Ahmedabad on 15th August 1975 and barring the Drive In cinema in Ahmedabad every cinema recorded housefull collections and both cities saw the highest collections ever. These cities had records by socials like Dost (1974) and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974) and action films were not the best bets at the time but Sholay smashed records in Mumbai by a distance and Ahmedabad it got past Roti Kapada Aur Makaan despite releasing on one theater less.
A week later the film opened in East Punjab and in certain mass markets like East Punjab, UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Bihar there was a tradition for extra seats when a film was really accepted and got going but with a Dharmendra starrer who was at an unimaginable level at the box office at that time the extra seats came out on release. The film did not officially beat the record of Roti Kapada Aur Makaan in East Punjab on day one as it was on less theaters but unofficially it would have as the distributor gave a higher first week share than Roti Kapada Aur Makaan despite lower collections as the over capacity theaters had probably more than covered the ground.
It was also released in Mysore and this was market was not going to be the strongest for an action dacait film as the ones before had not set this circuit on fire but Sholay easily smashed the record collections of Dharmatma and Deewaar which both had collected 37,000 apprx in early 1975.
The first day figures of Sholay in circuits where it was released in August 1975 are as follows.
“A week later the film opened in East Punjab and in certain mass markets like East Punjab, UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Bihar there was a tradition for extra seats when a film was really accepted and got going but with a Dharmendra starrer who was at an unimaginable level at the box office at that time the extra seats came out on release.”
I can forgive Harminder for this agenda driven piece , because atleast he brought some facts forward. Harminder is Dharamendra and SRK fanatic , so that is understandable. He is also Amitabh hater (He thinks of bachchan responsible for 1984) , so that is also understandable. And this article is serving all his goals. But again .. there is some truth about opening record which is completely spun by trade that time. So peace !!
Yes Yakuza…i think BOI deserves a pat in the back with the Box office figures.
Else till date i only knew that Sholay started very slow and in fact was a flop till the WoM kicked in.
This BOI story is quite right.
Again perceptions can be formed that they don’t like X or Y. Same is formed about everyone here. In BO debates, its easy to form perceptions.
Actually not bad trailer. This is Nitin Kakkar’s 2nd movie. He might have struggled to get good actors and long time to get it financed. Nitin’s 1st movie ‘Filmistaan’ won National Award for Best Hindi Film long back!
Gold looks wannabe
And satyamev jayate has one one of the prime names associated with it that has resulted in the bastardization of Bollywood: Milap Zaveri
Ever independence day or republic day this idiot comes up with pseudo jingoistic films and his fans start open defecation in online forums. So much for swachh bharath.
Anyone who gets as excited as u by the quality and bo numbers of films like padman, toilet or gold needs serious help outside their virtual online life.
Padman is best rated movie of the year so far if one goes by critics’ review. Though, it was not equally lucky at boxoffice.
For me, it was better than Dangal even.
Those who look for foreign endorsement can also see padman’s review by foreign sites. It is the best film of the year so far Hands down.
One of the serious reviewer –
Never saw Toilet though but going by reviews Toilet was decent to good but below expectations.
In fact, talking to Hindustan Times, Ranbir Kapoor went on to say that he did not agree with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s statement that Ranbir’s choice of films was stupid. Talking about the same, Ranbir added that while he did not agree with Chopra, the statement was the producer’s point of view. But he as an actor does not regret doing any of the films that he has done till date. “I don’t agree with him. That’s his point of view. I don’t regret any film that I have done. Be it Bombay Velvet, Saawariya or Jagga Jasoos, they all came naturally from me. So, they will always be a part of me. It’s like they are your children so yes, the successful ones are obviously there but it’s the failed ones that you will be close to because you are always like, ‘why didn’t people love them?’ You always feel attached to them”, said Ranbir.
GOLD MOVIE REVIEW
TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Updated: Aug 14, 2018, 04.45 PM IST
Critic’s Rating:
3.5/5
Worth it’s weight in gold
‘Gold’ isn’t just a film on hockey, it’s also a period film that recreates an era long forgotten. More than that, it’s reminds us of the painful reality of partition and how that brutally tore apart our nation. The production design and costumes, which play an integral part in depicting the era, are top notch. The cinematography and the background score stand out with excellent finesse and technique. The hockey matches create a great amount of thrill, and even though you know the end result, you will find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat and rooting for team India all the way.
Any Akshay Kumar movie is superb for you the very moment it is announced. No surprises there.
Wondering why Taran hasn’t posted his review or tweeted any word on Gold as yet. Maybe Akki has not sent the cheque.
Saw Call me by your name finally and completed all oscar nominated movies nominated in ‘Ány category’.
And i can rate
1) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 9.8
2) I Tonya – 9.5
3) Coco – 9.4
4) Call me by your name – 9.2
5) Florida Project – 8.5
Rest of the movies including Shape of the water are no where in the same league, will not rate any of the rest of the movies above 7.5.
Vikram Vedha – hindi dubbed – is now on Hotstar – what a film! Vijay Sethupati is the soul of the film. Didn’t know Madhavan has this wide range of acting talent!
Read ur review again An Jo – and since u watched it with subtitles, watch it again with hindi-dubbed (which is done very well). Yeah, similarity with Aks is striking but in Aks, AB with his towering presence and MB with his hard-hitting perf. delivered a superb combo-meal….here u have Maddy and Vijay both equals I guess in Tamil cinema and while Maddy’s role was well-defined, Vijay rose above the script and did too well for whatever he was given….I think this shd be remade in Hindi with maybe Aamir and Akshay….let Aamir play Vedha…..
This is review is being posted here third time. And there are only 3 review below 2.5 stars and two of them are posted twice here.
And there are dozens of reviews 3.5- 4.5 rated but i posted most in one comment. No one else other than me posted them here.
Clearly agenda driven Pseudo liberals live here.
Best discussion to open what pseudo liberals are –
All that matters is average rating of reviewers and sofar-
IBN live (Rohit Vats) – 4
DeccanChronicle – 4
BH – 4
Hindustan Times – 3.5
KoiMoi – 3.5
TOI – 3.5
DesiMartini – 4
LokSatta – 3.5
Firstpost(anna vetticad) – 1.75
FilmFare – 3.5
Bollywood Tashan – 4.5
Bollywood Junction – 4
And many other Youtubers whoever gave reviews have in 3.5 to 4.5 range.
Who would have thought that one day John will be bigger then Saif, Imran hashmi, Abhishek and many more. It proves then honest effort and hard work pays.
I don’t rate JA at all as an actor. But the sad reality is that right now he is much ahead of Saif, Abhishek and Hashmi right now.
SJ is likely to take an opening at over 12cr today (according to some predictions), something which is out of reach for Saif and Abhishek these days. The last solos of Saif were opening at 1-1.5cr while Abhishek’s AIW opened at 2cr.
Even before Parmanu, JA’s action films consistently opened at around 4-4.5cr, very low figures, but Saif and Abhishek will take grab such an opening figure for any movie of theirs with both hands these days.
I think the key for JA has been his perseverance. He is a very limited actor, but he has stuck with the action genre with a vengeance. Kept working on it hoping something will work one day.
Abhishek on the other hand has been out of sight for too long. Saif has found it hard to get acceptance beyond rom-coms and when you are limited to that genre, age is one big issue.
It was my most awaited movie of the year. Sadly, it already postponed twice. Anyways, poster looks worth the wait. It will beat hrithik’s film hands down.
Was Sarfarosh talking about Women related crimes? It is simple story how a corrupt cop turns good after seeing women crimes and starts beating up goons and flying them in the air a-la Shetty style.
FYI – remake of Telugu blockbuster Temper.
This is easy formula to remake a blockbuster and get a blockbuster. Shetty did same with Singham and now Simmba.
This interview with a Chinese media group is one among the many clips that are available on YouTube — as clips. The full interview should be fun to watch. Still, it was interesting to watch the various clips. The main anchor the, lady Lu Yu, has met Aamir in China, interacted with him a few months back, and then come with a team, in May. They joined in the shramdaan and have interviewed Aamir at his home.
Watched Pullimurugan – Mohan Lal! this genius gets better with every movie! 1st Malayalam movie to cross 100 cr (ended around 150 cr) – fully mass-masala film….with top-notch production values….maza aa gaya!
his involvement with films is as much as Aamir as for this film he performed all his stunts – Action director Peter Hein originally planned a 6 months stunt workshop for the actor Mohanlal. But after watching Mohalal’s stunt performance, he was amazed and ended the workshop in 3 hours.
personally, I feel that as far as acting is concerned – Mohanlal is as good as Big B – ML has acted in more than 300 films in a career spanning 40 years (he is just 58) – 5 National awards and many more – what makes him special is that he hardly tries to hide his age but his eyes and emoting capabilities are so good that ppl love him very much – and why not?
Addatoday predicting 25cr opening for Gold today. Highest Akshay Kumar opener for sure.
SJ is the surprise here. From morning trends, it is being claimed that 15cr is very much on the cards and it even may go higher to 17cr, depending on the evening shows.

NDTV has given 2⭐️ to #Gold, though i had never questioned other critics for their rating to any film , but i would like to request @ndtv to stop reviewing films which are gloriying & celebrating India . U guys should stick to things u do the best, support anti India movement.
I guess the benefits of waving a flag at an ABVP event as he did. LOL he has come a long way from the guy who said he wouldn’t mouth anti-Pakistan dialogs in the 1990s (that was also a bit idiotic, but I guess shows he has been consistent about not alienating segments of the audience that have been working for him, as the overseas Punjabi crowd across borders probably was at that time). And don’t even get me started on the fact that Mr. India holds a Canadian passport (perhaps that isn’t too ironic, since one meets many such bhakts in the US).
This is the best day for these movies, first day Gold definitely lost 5-10 cr due to clash and less screens than what it deserved. From tomorrow onwards, there is sufficient screens for both movies but national sentiments will subdue tomorrow onwards. Then it is all about how good and entertaining the movie is.
Watched Gold. Don’t know from where these 3-4 stars are coming from. Its a dull film throughout with a perfunctory treatment which fails in arousing any nationalistic feeling whatsoever. The screenplay is very convenient and unable to engage viewer at any stage.Songs are misplaced and deter the pace of the film. Film bears a similarity with Chak De India but falls miserably compare to that .
Akshay Kumar is the weakest link of the film, don’t know what he was doing in the film. Even keeping aside his fake Bengali accent he isn’t convincing in the role . I couldnt even fathom his character . He is neither a coach nor a player, has nothing to do anything with hockey but still is the main protagonist on a film made on hockey.
It seems it has become an art to make nationalistic movies and try to earn empathy from a normal cinegoer.
RIP — led India to first ever series victory in England, among other things. Still one of only three Indian captains to achieve that (Kapil in 1986 and Dravid in 2007 were the other two).
Yes, and in an era when “historic” is bandied about, his captaincy led to some truly historic achievements: first ever series wins for India on foreign soil, and three of them! Of course what a great team too: the spin crew, Sunny bursting onto the scene, and Dilip Sardesai’s guts and grit in the Caribbean…
In the 1960s, for a minimum of 15 Tests, four Indian batsmen had a higher batting average than Ajit Wadekar’s 34, whose contribution in winning causes – and low scoring matches – was far superior to that of his peers. In fact, for a minimum of 30 Tests, he emerges as India’s second-highest impact Test batsman. Wadekar was instrumental to India’s path breaking series wins over New Zealand and England away from home.
Gold Takes A Big Lead Over Satyameva Jayate
Wednesday 15 August 2018 22.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Gold has taken a big lead over Satyameva Jayate on the first day as it looks to collect in the 25-26 crore nett region while Satyameva Jayate will collect in the 16-17 crore nett. Despite the big lead these are also strong collections for Satyameva Jayate. It was a big holiday for Independence Day which has given the collections a big boost.
Gold is easily the highest opening for an Akshay Kumar starrer with previous best at 17 crore nett and for John Abraham the best his solo starrer had ever done before was Force 2 at 5.75 crore nett apprx so he has also beaten his best by a huge distance. Gold will come out higher in nearly all the circuits except maybe some of the smaller circuits.
Despite the big starts for both films, the jury will still be out as we go into working days before the weekend so there will be drops and the films will have to find their levels from these high numbers and then sustain from those levels.
It remains to be seen what happens over the next few days but Gold has won the initial battle due to the stardom of Akshay Kumar. Satyameva Jayate was a mass film which had action and music while Gold was more of a content film which held less appeal for the mass audience but that is where stardom comes into play.
Gold really had no right to be in the same range as Satyameva Jayate in places like Bihar, CI, Rajasthan and CP Berar but due to the presence of Akshay Kumar the collections are very similar and that too on Independence Day when the single screen crowd really comes out. If it was a Rowdy Rathore type then obviously its a different story but Gold is not that. But this where stardom comes into play and big stars can bring crowds in markets where the film may not actually be their type.
Mumbai and Delhi / UP will be best performers for Gold. Both films have taken a hit in East Punjab due to a Punjabi film. Satyamev Jayate will be best in CPCI and Bihar while Maharashtra cities like Nasik, Kohlapur, Malegaon, Sangli etc have also seen very good collections. Both combined it will be biggest opening day in the history of Hindi cinema beating the 40 crore nett apprx of Bahubali – The Conclusion though that was a single film.
Considering SJ has 40% of screens in clash it’s done similar business occupancy wise so the clash has been pretty even though Gold has scored really well in terms of higher collections.
Come on. I too also rate Abhishek, Saif and Imran aboveJohn as an actor. But it is harsh reality that BO power is nothing to do with Acting. Case in point “Sabki aan, sabki Shan..Sabka ek bhai jaan.
JA movie getting a 17 crore opening day is great result for him. May be carrying some equity from Parmanu and the songs that the movie has. Good timing to mint this, this is all good result.
Sacred Games is very enjoyable. I’m quite impressed by the execution, looking forward to Season 2. Saif deserved some kind of success, I’m glad he has this opportunity. Really well shot & some filmmakers could do with watching it!
I doubt both the movies will better their opening day numbers on any of subsequent days. This is clearly holiday effect in play. Merits of the movie will be known today. I expect both to drop to less than 10 crs…
Happy for John. Extraordinary number whichever way you look. What Baghi-2 done for Tiger SJ will so for John ? One thing is sure in action genre Tiger will face competition from John.
Taran’s number for gold is 25 cr. So SJ has done 80% of gold’s business with only two-thirds of gold’s screen count. What a beating taken by mr india’s film on independence day! Lol
Both films have dropped today…but basically openings for both are superb. John Abraham out of nowhere has come good, in fact box office this year has been extraordinary in India. Only Salman has disappointed from major films!
Baaghi 2 and now Satyamev Jayate. Serves most actors of today’s times right to stay away from action movies. Only 2 actors have consistently gone for it lately and they have scored big.
There is a vacuum there since the prime days of Sunny Deol. Salman has been doing a few masala action movies now and then and it has certainly benefited him a lot.
I feel the likes of Hrithik, Abhishek and Akshay Kumar lately have been wrong in consistently staying away from action movies.
Its a remake of Temper…Not a great movie by any stretch but proper masala and can work well with Rohit Shettys comic touch…Simmbaa can be Ranveers Dabang if done well…
If it is indeed releasing as planned a week after Zero then this will spell big trouble for SRK
I doubt if Simmba will move out of its extended holiday release weekend as planned. Zero may actually get pushed back (like Super 30 is expected to be postponed too). Also, 2.0 may get postponed to release in Christmas week …
But must say that at a time when everyone from abhishek to hritik to srk to saif is desperate to deliver a comeback BO hit, JA is showing everyone the way!
I found the direction cringeworthy. And JA’s non-acting did not help. But glad that someone made a film on this subject, no matter how good or bad the end product is. Some attempts need to be applauded for just trying.
Akshay being criticized for Gold is mere continuation of the criticism of mainstream actors being the face of a star vehicle. Imo he was as okay as ever in the film, not his best but certainly not his worst. As for his accent, still more convincing than AK’s desperate attempt at turning Punjabi in RDB.
A trade source says, “The Dhoom 4 shoot will commence early next year and will go on for 130 days so Adi is keen to lock cast and crew by this year. Major parts of the film will be shot in Dubai. While a reference poster with Salman had even been made now it seems that it’s not working out with him. This is a recent development in the last few weeks, especially post-Race 3. Apparently, one of the conditions that Salman had laid down with Aditya Chopra was that he would not be in a single scene with Abhishek Bachchan (given Salman’s past history with Abhishek’s wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) in Dhoom 4. The writing team was apparently racking its brain on how to come to terms with this creative change because Abhishek (who plays ACP Jai Dixit) forms a crucial part of the cast.”
On Account of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death, SRK featuring in his only album release. Can’t imagine this collaboration happening with current BJP leaders!
150 cr is Out of scope…100 cr we will know today. Always thought that Gold trailors were very iffy with all that Akki’s bengali thing and dhoti..Did anyone see the movie? I loved Kagti’s last movie though….
Its a 60%+ drop for both films on day 2 and almost neck to neck collections. Its a catastrophe especially for a big film like Gold. Perhaps the over performance on day 1 has been evened out now. Just a wait and watch scenario till Sunday.
I find the totals for SMJ is being given too early. Single screen collection figures come later on the following day. Since SMJ is getting a lot of boost from the single screens, it’s a bit premature to say what the thursday figures are.
They very confidentally predicted it as one horse race. Even I felt so given the mixed reviews for SMJ. I am surprised with this hare and tortoise fable turning into reality.
The official numbers for MI6 is out. The film has done 15m usd gross in India. It translates to 103 cr gross and 81 cr nett. It is another BO hit from hollywood in indian market.
Actor Ajith, who is tied up with quite a few interesting projects, might star in the Tamil remake of Hindi flick Pink, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee in the lead roles. Yes, it looks like the action actor has been locked to step into the shoes of Amitabh Bachchan for the Tamil remake. However, an official confirmation regarding the same is awaited. Directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Pink Tamil remake will be directed by Vinoth and Boney Kapoor will be funding this venture.
#SatyamevaJayate saw a big dip on Day 2… Expected to show an upward trend today [Day 3]… Single screens/mass belt remains strong… Wed 20.52 cr, Thu 7.92 cr. Total: ₹ 28.44 cr. India biz.
#Gold witnessed a decline on Thu… Biz should gain momentum from today onwards… Plexes hold the key… Wed 25.25 cr, Thu 8 cr. Total: ₹ 33.25 cr. India biz.
Rs 50 to Rs 59 crore: Average
Rs 60 to Rs 75 crore: Hit
Rs 75 to Rs 95 crore: Super Hit
The Film has found acceptance from the masses as the B and C centres didn’t drop much on the second-day but it remains to be see how far do they carry the film. The film has been made on a moderate budget and the revenues from ancillary sources have already made the film a profitable venture for the producers, T-Series. However, that doesn’t really matter as the distribution rights of the film has been sold on outright bases to Kumar Mangat. The trade sources confirm that Mangat has fetched the All India Distribution Rights of Satyameva Jayate for Rs 22.00 crore plus the print cost, which means the landing cost for distributors would be around Rs 25 crore.
From the producers’ point of view, the film has been made on a budget of Rs 44 crore (including publicity), which the producers have already recovered from sale of theatrical, music, satellite and digital rights. Given the rate at which the film is faring at the box office currently, it should reach the break even point by Saturday or at max Sunday, and the overflows for distributors will start coming in from Sunday or at max Monday.
It seems that SMJ is safe economically. The opening day was remarkable. If it merely holds on with these 7-8cr figures until the end of the week end, it will be a sure shot hit.
I also felt that Mouni Roy’s lip job made matters worse for her. Every actress nowadays destroys natural lips by going for lip job. Somebody called it permanently pouting! And Talaash was not a super flop. And I suspect that Aamir must have given lots of suggestions to make it a better film.
What did KRK say about SMJ? How many stars?
His reviews are quite entertaining though one may not agree.
Personally, Talaash is one of my favorite Hindi films of this century — and, along with Mangal Pandey and Ghajini, my favorite Aamir films since Lagaan. While I greatly enjoyed the Hirani-Aamir films at the time, they haven’t stayed with me like these three have.
Yes, this is an epochal calamity, and all the more tragic given Kerala has, in many ways, done the right things environmentally (hardly any other state where forest cover has INCREASED in recent years). There is the CM’s relief fund but really, whatever one can do, the state needs it…
Going by the trend, Gold will wrap around 110 (+/-10).
SMJ around 80 cr (+/-5cr).
Akshay is stuck in same 110-135 bracket. Even with solo release it would have done 130-150 cr. But, another genuine hit with good content. but, this is the biggest solo hit for John in his entire career.

@TrickBolly
It has been a great year for Bollywood and there are still three most anticipated movies of the year waiting to rule the box office.
For which one, you want the trailer/teaser to release first?
It has been a great year for Bollywood and there are still three most anticipated movies of the year waiting to rule the box office.
Dont understand what is Zero doing in this poll.
There are better looking film at this stage. And whatever came out from Zero sofar looks gimmick and cheap.
How can one not count Total Dhamal and Simbba especially total dhamal has huge starcast and Indra kumar is known for huge entertainers. This will be fun family entertainer unlike Masti series.
Also, kedarnath has very interesting and refreshing subject. This is a big budget movie. Abhishek kapoor has all ingredients to surprise with this one.
2.0>=Thugs> Total Dhamal> Simbba > Kedarnath > Zero > so on
I think zero is going to defy expectations and do well at the box office. Anand Rai has a good track record and should come up with another winner with mass appeal
Considering big budget, it would be sensible if Kedarnath moves to 14th Dec or 21st Dec as scheduled earlier. I can see Zero or Simbba failing. On the other hand, clashing with 2.0 and followed by Total Dhamal in next week, it will be all crushed and two weeks later Zero will take most of the screens.
Clashing with Zero gives it 5 open weeks for good trending, i can see it will be difficult to release on 21st but if content is good it will survive and there is a chance Zero or simbba will fail.
This is based on 2013 floods in northern states of India which took more than 5000 lives. Sushant plays guide and sara ali khan plays tourist. It is being shot on massive scale with good vfx team behind. Given the unique religious setup in Uttrakhand, it has all chances of striking well chord under good director.
I see, thanks — there was Hashmi/Soha film on the Mumbai floods a few years ago…I am generally skeptical of films with a “natural disaster” backdrop, but certainly scope for good visuals here.
Exactly, Sara plays pilgrim stuck in Kedarnath. This along with Manikarnika were most interesting movies of the year. Sadly, Both had gone over-budget. Manikarnika postponed multiple times and finally to next year due to heavy vfx work, and this one was stuck as Prerna arora and Abhishek kapoor had different thoughts on production design and also claim on rights with Bhushan kapoor and one more different producer.
Zero has a huge budget and nothing else going for it. Rai is a small time director. This is similar to getting that Sinha chap to direct a big budget Ra One. Morons (read Red Chillies) dont learn from mistakes, do they?
Just watch Zero teasers and Alita: BA trailer one after the other. No surprise that many find BW so embarrassing with its debased baseline standards.
But all things considered, British actors are a whole lot better. Watch Mark Rylance in Wolfhall for instance. Nothing from Hollywood comes close (including Pacino, who remains a personal favourite)
Looking at younger actors as well, it’s pretty obvious where the real talent lies.
Ryan Gosling is probably the best North American actor working right now. Don’t think he can hold his own against Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman or Eddie Redmayne, just to name a few British actors off the top of my head.
And none of these actors are even close to Mark Rylance…or Gary Oldman’s level. Not kidding!
Even for “ordinary” roles or ones that would appear to be tailor-made for US actors, the British actors are lapping their American peers — take the example of Charlie Cox as Daredevil in the Netflix series!
Robert Downey Jr is always fun to watch, although he tends to play himself most of the times. I quite liked Mark Ruffalo in Foxcatcher. Thought it was a brilliant performance.
Steve Carell, with his ‘steely’, deadpan expressions is good as well.
But, by and large, British actors are better equipped to play just any kind of role. They tend to display ‘notes’ which are largely absent in the American repertoire (that is, if acting were to be compared to music composition).
Not a fan of Leo. He’s obviously good but in a rehearsed sort of way. Sean Penn, I quite like him.
Matt Damon probably doesn’t belong in this list. I haven’t seen much of Joaquin Phoenix, but what little I’ve seen seems to indicate he is quite good. Can’t say much more.
If I had to praise Hollywood, I’d say the 70s was the best decade for cinema by a long-shot. Pacino, De Niro, Gene Hackman (The Conversation remains a favourite), Jeff Bridges, Nicholson, Duvall, Dustin Hoffman, the second coming of Brando, Coppola, Scorsese…it was brimming with talent and fresh ideas. In an ostentatious sort of way, everyone deeply cared about creating ‘art’.
brits are more conservative. americans more commercial and out of the box. so while many of the american talent has weered away towards commercialism, brits focussed on art.
Hanks and Oldman is like Aamir and Irfann comparison. One is operating in commercial space and other in art. It may be the culture in their respective countries. Else why are there so many English imports in HW, and not the other way round?
The Brits go to Hollywood because that’s where the money is. They work in theatre because that’s where their passion lies.
And I don’t agree with the Aamir – Irfan comparison. British actors are fully capable of being leading men in commercial blockbusters. One could also count on them bringing a lot more gravitas to such roles.
Agree that American actors are more geared towards commercial factors because of the way HW studios work. Also agree with Saket’s views on Leo and Damon – not a fan of either myself.
I can appreciate Leo’s body of work as much as Aamir’s. And both of them are ‘rehearsed actors’ instead of natural ones (IMO). However, where Aamir scores is that every director delivers their best films when they work with him. Whereas, Leo just works with the best directors around and adds good films to his name. So the gap between them is huge.
Btw, Nolan insists on signing Brit actors. Beyond his obvious racist stance, he publicly defends his casting by claiming brit actors are the best in business. Take that HW! Lol
I respect The Guardian a lot. As I mentioned previously, I haven’t seen enough of Joaquin Phoenix to talk about him in a more meaningful way. I remember watching him in Gladiator, Signs & The Village. All solid performances but hardly exceptional.
I find it a little odd that he’s being considered great enough to step into DDL’s shoes. That is some praise.
I normally don’t compare but generally I find acting decent in Hollywood offerings (But you have actors from different ethnicity ). Recently saw “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and acting was top grade through out.
Saket, in case you haven’t already read this piece, check it out.
Excerpt: “…why so many good American roles have been going to English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Australian, and Canadian actors. The phenomenon may have reached its unignorable peak in last year’s docudrama Selma: the parts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, Governor George Wallace, and President Lyndon B. Johnson were all played by Brits.
Film audiences, of course, have long since accustomed themselves to seeing nonnative speakers of American—Daniel Day-Lewis, Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, Clive Owen, and their international ilk—confidently impersonating Yanks on the silver screen. Now the migrant thespians are starting to dominate stateside TV, too. On any given night of channel surfing or Netflix browsing in the past few seasons, you’re likely to have happened upon an English actor or two playing a 100 percent born-and-bred American: Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, and Lennie James on The Walking Dead, Hugh Dancy on Hannibal, Charlie Cox on Daredevil, Freddie Highmore and Olivia Cooke on Bates Motel, Damian Lewis and Rupert Friend on Homeland, Eddie Marsan on Ray Donovan, Janet McTeer on Battle Creek, Dominic West and Ruth Wilson on The Affair, or Hugh Laurie on House. You might also have come across the odd Welshman (Michael Sheen on Masters of Sex), Scot (Alan Cumming on The Good Wife), Irishman (Colin Farrell on True Detective), Canadian (Taylor Kitsch on Friday Night Lights), or Australian (Robert Taylor on Longmire), each of them with an eerily undetectable accent. Crisis or not, this is getting embarrassing.”
Read the whole article just now. Stunning piece…as expected from The Atlantic.
I’ve only mentioned British Male actors so far; the women aren’t that behind — Claire Foy who plays Elizabeth in Netflix’s The Queen is stunning in Wolf Hall playing Anne Bolyn.
And of course, I remain a great fan of Helena Bonham Carter, who is irresistible to watch, no matter what role she plays.
When Harry Potter was in the process of being adapted (on screen), J K Rowling put in a strange condition — that no American actor would play any character from the books. Presumably she wanted to preserve the authenticity of the books, but not for a second does anyone miss the presence of any American actor in the entire series.
On the contrary, the series is richer because of the presence of Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman (who was wonderful as Snape), Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith and Ralph Fienes …among other spectacular actors.
And Eddie Redmayne fits right into the world of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them as Newt Schamander.
Yes, there’s a lot of good acting to be found in the Harry Potter series. When stalwarts appear on screen (just remembered Kenneth Branagh also has a cameo in the 2nd part), it’s to be expected. Gary Oldman is searing as Sirius Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban. Emma Thompson is wonderful as the eccentric Sybill Trelawney. I already mentioned Alan Rickman as Snape…Maggie Smith as Professor McNoggle. Michael Gambon/Richard Harris as Dumbledore…the list is quite big.
In fact, the last two parts (Deathly Hallows) are very good mood pieces for adults, not just children. After part 4, the movies can be enjoyed by adults looking for a good dose of quality cinema.
I have seen them all and agree last two parts are good as a movie; but people who have not read the book, apparently there are lots of gap in movie series; I was asking too many uncomfortable questions to people who forced me to watch the movies.
And I still disagree on acting in Harry Potter! Many times we equate sufficient acting as good acting in good movies. I normally give credit to director.
No, HP movies are not quality cinema by any means. But starting with the fourth it became darker and sinister enough to be guilty pleasures for young adults. In the beginning it was nothing more than kid’s flick.
But yes, the supporting cast did their job well. The problem is that the lead 3 actors are so pathetic that all the other veterans’ work were kind of wasted.
Anyone who has read the books would agree that none of the films do any justice to them. For those who hv not read the books, the general feedback is the films are a big bore, which i dont disagree with.
Guilty pleasure it can be. But proudly calling them good films or quality cinema is a juvenile stance.
Critics in US dont review every film claiming it to be everything for everyone like indian masala. The HP reviewers view it as young adults films – a genre made for juveniles, literally!
You on the other hand are claiming they are quality films for adults!!! As for masses (anywhere in this world) – they are plain dumb – reason why every studio execute insists that blockbuster films have to be dumbed down for commercial viability.
If you think otherwise, would suggest you talk to some HW studio professionals or some pro reviewers for further clarifications.
I suggest you go and read some reviews on metacritic. I’d rather believe those reviews, not only because they tend to match my view of the films, but also because they are quite educational.
I’ve enjoyed Mark Rylance performces (the ones I’ve seen so far) especially him in Bridge of Spies. To me though, to qualify for being a ‘great’ actor, you have to deliver big time performances. De Niro has done that in countless of movies. Only british actor who comes close to De Niro (IMO) is DDL.
I do value your opinion more, simply because you have a lot more knowledge of cinema than I will ever have…but this comment on De Niro from me is just as a casual viewer.
I don’t claim to have a lot more knowledge than you or anyone else. I too am just a casual viewer. I have seen all of De Niro’s great films though.
The thing about Mark Rylance is that he does have a great body of work, but it’s in a different medium: Theatre. This particular piece better explains the point I was trying to make…

Aamir Khan in a Hollywood film remake after ‘Thugs of Hindostan’?
The source adds, “He is interested in remaking a Hollywood movie, which was produced by Paramount Pictures. Aamir never spills the beans about his projects till all the details are chalked out. No wonder, he is keeping the name of this film under wraps. It will be revealed only when everything is finalised as talks are currently underway to acquire the rights.”
This idiot hritik really thinks he can match Tiger in an action film? Talk about professional suicide …
Hrithik versus Tiger… Yash Raj’s new film [not titled yet] begins with a puja ceremony… Costars Vaani Kapoor… Directed by Siddharth Anand… 2 Oct 2019 [Gandhi Jayanti] release… It will be a 5-day extended weekend… #HrithikVsTigerpic.twitter.com/qe0BLZD0IQ
The word of mouth is good in the metros, however nowhere close to extraordinary as projected on the social media. Rs 130 crore would be a good result for Gold, however its about time Akshay Kumar films go past the Rs 200 crore mark at the domestic Box-Office. With films like 2.0, Kesari, Housefull 4 and Hera Pheri 3 up for release, we are hopeful that the same shall happen soon. Verdict Chart For Gold:
Rs 115 to 129 crore: Average
Rs 130 to 145 crore: Hit
Rs 146 to 170 crore: Super Hit
The reasons, however, are very different this time. Sources close to the project informed us that the makers of Kedarnath want to avoid a clash with the South mega budget sci-fi film 2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in lead roles. 2.0 will be releasing in the same week as Kedarnath, that is on November 29 and the latter will be hitting the big screen on November 30. Furthermore, the source also added that from November to December, there are only big releases coming in.
If 2.0 gets postponed once more, it will only give Thugs a more open run than the 3 weeks it already has. And 2.0 has an history of never making to the finish line.
Commenting on the same, a source close to the development says, “January 25 has suddenly become a very crowded date. With Super 30, Thackeray and now Cheat India and Manikarnika releasing together, all four films will be affected drastically at the box office. Keeping this in mind, the makers of Super 30 have decided on pushing the release of the Hrithik Roshan starrer to help maximise the reach and eventual business prospects of the film.” When prodded further about details of the new date, the source continues, “Right now talks are still on, once done a new date will be fixed and announced as well. But as of now, Super 30 will not clash at the box office with Thackeray.”
whatever, but HR is still a saleable solo-hero – if not anything, his films still can race away to 100+ cr…..apart from S30, he has Krish4 and YRF’s next with Tiger – both big project….BO wise, he is making good choices…. that man has struggled a lot with health-issues and divorce etc, good to see him back in action…..personally I wanted Abhi to do equally well as HR on BO and we had proper AB/Vinod Khanna kind of deal here a few years ago…but alas…..
Just finished watching Bhavesh Joshi on Netflix. Pretty tame movie.
Not a single performance stands out. Nishikant Kamat is pretty appalling. Harshvardhan Kapoor is earnest but unremarkable. Maybe that was the point.
There isn’t much point to the movie though. It’s the most confused film (after Bombay Velvet) to have come out of the Motwane/Kashyap stable. Disappointed.
Oh well, at least 2 songs from the film are quite good.
It doesn’t work as a satire; it certainly doesn’t work as a social commentary, and for a superhero film, it’s really odd. It’s more interested in deconstructing the superhero genre, which as an idea isn’t wrong at all, but the execution is sometimes mindnumbingly poor.
Some of the ghisa-pita lines that Nishikant Kamat has to spout are just…cringe-worthy!
In the end, the major flaw of the film lies in the fact that it takes itself too seriously. With uninspired casting and some really poor writing, which comes as a shock, the film kind of chokes on its own vomit.
I’m being very harsh here, but this isn’t expected from the director of Lootera, Udaan & Sacred Games.
Anyone here watched Raman Raghav 2.0? I started to watch, could not sit beyond first 30 mins …
Dunno whats the prob with Kashyap these days. His actors do their job well, the settings are as authentic as ever … yet I get hyper bored with his storytelling. The only reason I am looking forward to Manmarzian is the three leading actors in it.
2-3 years will be enough for Nick to get over his indian ‘fancies’ and fetish. But that will be enough time for her to use some of his influence to get some roles in HW.
Divorce among immigrants are not that high in US or Europe, compared to the native population. But its a different case for hybrid marraiges. I know quite a few in my inner circle itself.
Even in employment GC if you move to a different job quickly, you potentially could be charged for fraud because it is future job which you are not honoring.
It is there..But with Trump everything has more scrutiny. He wants to close most of these and start a system like Canadian one which is merit based point system.
Priyanka proved a point that it is not necessary that the groom should be older and that is woman empowerment. She also proved to Salman and his fans that she did not lie about her engagement. It is another point that she is doing The sky is pink.
Marrying an Indian would have put constraints on her career and other choices. She is an independent woman with marriage or without marriage. And she is also a singer just like Nick. I can see interesting career choices for PC.
It seems that the identity of Milkha Singh was misrepresented in the textbooks of West Bengal. Calling out to the education ministry over the mistake, Farhan Akhtar reposted the picture that was shared by someone on Twitter. The said textbook featured the image of Farhan from the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, instead of the real life athlete himself and the actor decided to point out the error.
That thread has become too long. About Hollywood versus British actors. Jeeves, Irrfan cant replace popular stars because he looks too intellectual. There are other factors like charisma, star presence, star appeal and so on and so forth coupled with solid acting.
Irfaan, Manoj, Nawaz – these 3 actors are good but NO MORE a solo-hero material who can deliver BO hits – check their last few films – all BO duds…..it is a pity that producer put their money on them and churn out solo-hero films one after another!!
In order to play the character of Mauji in Sui Dhaaga, Varun Dhawan has trained rigorously in the intricate processes of cutting and stitching fabrics for his role. Apparently, the actor wanted to surprise his father with his skills. Which is why, he decided to give his father David Dhawan a very special birthday present. Varun has sewn a shirt for his father’s birthday and has gifted it to him. It is being said that David was thrilled to receive this beautiful gift from his younger son.
If marrying a younger guy is women empowerment, then i am sorry for your intellect.Mostly In west, Women with Power and money have been using younger guys as sex toys just like men do and this is openly accepted in society. Movies like How to be latin lover depicts such cases.
Just like an old man marrying a women with generation gap sets wrong example to destruct society, same is for older women with younger guy with generation gap age difference.
PC cant be ideal for younger generation, this is just a career boosting step for her as she will be more recognized face in hollywood now and will lend some hollywood connection and roles using Jonas’ influence.
For some acting and dressing wild to stone age is progressive, for some it is regressive. They dont even understand worth of social life, anything in name of freedom and democracy is progressive. Sad.
PC could have used Jonas connections for HW career as his girlfriend also. People dont need to marry for that. But hybrid marraiges are v difficult to work out after the initial fascination rubs off.
Gold And Satyameva Jayate Do Well On Sunday
Sunday 19 August 2018 23.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Gold and Satyameva Jayate have done well on Sunday with both films showing growth of around 30-35%. The collections of Gold will go to around 15.75-16 crore nett while Satyamev Jayate will be around 9.75-10 crore nett as per early estimates.
Gold has shown solid growth for three days since the big fall on Thursday to record a weekend of 70 crore nett plus and Satyameva Jayate has seen a turnaround on Sunday for a weekend of 50 crore nett plus. Its a healthy extended weekend figure of 120 crore nett combined with the latter doing more than expected.
Gold has practically doubled its Thursday number on Sunday and has done well to get this far considering the huge 70% fall on Thursday. But the main thing was it got upward momentum which has happened and now its about the crucial Monday and weekday business which will be helped by a holiday on Wednesday though it has to sustain to really get benefit of that.
Satyameva Jayate has done well over its first weekend with over 50 crore nett which is a big total for this film. The film is through even though it has not gained much over the weekend and has chances to emerge a HIT even with just a normal trend on the weekdays.
EXclusive: Aamir Khan acquires the remake rights of Paramount Pictures' #ForestGump…. Apart from #Osho biopic and this Hollywood project, he is also considering a historical drama under his home banner… Details inside!! https://t.co/VZ6wND2wO6pic.twitter.com/wteJh5zu9M
Forest Gump remake after 25 years? Such overtly sentimental remakes may have fitted well into his nineties work, but now??Perhaps he wants to go back into that ridiculous Samar mode.
MB isnt happening now. So that historical may be the best pick of the lot. Would like to hear more details about it.
No Osho please. I dont have problem with FG or Samar. Loved Samar. Historicals will again create unwanted problems unless one is Akshay Kumar or Ajay Devgn.
It is an achievement story against odds. That must have attracted him. It depends on how it will be executed. By the time he makes it others may do the version unofficially.
Whatever he does next, it wont release before 2020. For an inspirational story i will prefer that film about the female amputee who climbed everest. Never got gump’s achievement in the first place. What was it again? Running cross country? Reuniting with his dying hippie girlfriend? Or fighting in vietnam?
That will become another heroine oriented film after Dangal and SS. FG with an Indian feel will be interesting. If it is shot in interesting locations in Maharashtra or Himachal.
I hope this is another false rumour. Aamir has talked about Forest Gump as a favourite, long back. But that does not mean he has to remake it. I seriously hope that this story is untrue.
Difficult to say whats really coming after toh at this point. As per reports and rumors, he seems to be toying with different ideas and is involved with scripting of a few. But i guess nothing has shaped up to his liking yet, else he wud have announced his next by now.
It will be a great idea. Gump have the basics to make a good remake. It was an absolutely wonderful film.
For some who aren’t aware of it already, there was a time when Aamir was being compared to Hanks. Both, for looking a bit similar to the latter and for his work ethic.
Aamir admitted in some interviews during the period of Gump/Apollo 13 that he was a fan of Hanks.
Maybe the Forrest Gump has remained in Aamir’s mind forever. The film has so much in it, apart from the marginal intelligence bit of the main character.
Anything near to its level will make it a Bollywood masterpiece.
YES! With Aamir and very Indian FG will be wonderful. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s his dream, he talked about it being THE role for him. Maybe he never forgot.
Bunty aur Babli has to be my favorite Yashraj film in years and years, and I’d love to see Abhishek and Rani again; I do wish we had Shaad Ali’s zany sensibility again, but to be honest he’s also been very far from matching this over the last decade…
It was a chutiyamatic film of the highest order.. a classic example of Yashraj brand of filmmaking. Market a film well and loot lo audience ko bundle film dikhakar
Watched GOLD today. Despite the lack of novelty and a few silly moments (mockery in a Buddhist monastery, a drunk team manager dancing like a buffoon), the film has enough moments of inspiration and well choreographed hockey sequences to keep the audiences entertained. The performances are borderline decent and par for the course while the screenplay oscillates from genuinely good to lackluster in parts. Overall I’d rate it a 7/10.
@TrickBolly
Aug 17
It has been a great year for Bollywood and there are still three most anticipated movies of the year waiting to rule the box office.
For which one, you want the trailer/teaser to release first?
And the biz multiplies on Sun… Both, #Gold and #SatyamevaJayate have recorded strong figures over the *5-day extended weekend*… Combined biz is approx ₹ 125 cr nett [+/-]… Ironically, approx one-third biz [of ₹ 125 cr] was accumulated on #IndependenceDay alone.
Guess which Indian film has proven a tough opponent to #Gold and #SatyamevaJayate in Australia? Telugu film #GeethaGovindam, starring Vijay Deverakonda… The *combined* weekend biz of the two Hindi films [A$ 192,306] is less than that of #GeethaGovindam [A$ 202,266]. @comScore
Gold Recovers Momentum Over Weekend
Monday 20 August 2018 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Gold which had an excellent start on day one saw a big drop on day two but has recovered the momentum over the weekend with solid growth over the weekend. The film has grossed 70.50 crore nett over its extended weekend with Sunday going back over 15 crore nett when Thursday was just 8 crore nett.
The film has done well in places like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkatta. The mass markets are decent as its competing with Satyameva Jayate with similar collections but thats mainly due to the star power of Akshay Kumar as the film is not the type for the likes of UP, Bihar and CI.
The first five day business of Gold is as follows.
Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx
Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx
Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 12,00,00,000 apprx
Sunday – 15,25,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 70,50,00,000 apprx
The film needs to sustain on Monday and the film will then have a good run for a couple of weeks as multiplexes are generally doing pretty good business especially on Saturday and Sunday. The first day was a given. It can also get the advantage of Bakri Eid on Wednesday.
#Gold has an EXCELLENT *extended* opening weekend… Took a dip on Day 2, but gradually picked up from Day 3 to Day 5… All eyes on Mon-Thu biz… Wed 25.25 cr, Thu 8.10 cr, Fri 10.10 cr, Sat 12.30 cr, Sun 15.55 cr. Total: ₹ 71.30 cr. India biz.
Week 1 is looking to be 85+ Cr nett. Thursday was scary but since Friday, the movie has bounced back like any good HIT film.
Economics wise it needs to be 100+ which it is certain to achieve.
Thursday was Akshay doing the steeplechase, scaring everyone by falling into the water but he rose up like a Gold Olympic runner and is now breaking steeplechase records at Usain Bolt speeds. We look on in admiration at how he has dismissed John Abraham as an opponent.
#SatyamevaJayate packs a STRONG *extended* opening weekend total… Went downhill on Day 2, but remained consistent from Day 3 to Day 5… Weekdays biz is crucial… Wed 20.52 cr, Thu 7.92 cr, Fri 9.18 cr, Sat 9.03 cr, Sun 10.26 cr. Total: ₹ 56.91 cr. India biz.
I think SMJ is a hit at the very least if one takes into account the costs. No one expected it open that well. A 20cr opener is for the likes of the Khans and maybe Ranbir, not for a JA action film.
I guess that during the week days, SMJ will earn almost as much as Gold. The latter, being a multiplex film will make the difference during the holidays and week ends. This has been the trend till here.
SMJ is a hit at the very least. Gold has some work to do to become one. But it has done alright as well.
but no one ever raises the opposite question. If it’s possible for John Abraham (or others in comparable contexts) to get such numbers on a good day, yes it’s a surprise for sure, but it also proves (and I’m repeating an old point once more) how many of the numbers on the biggest films/stars etc (initial, gross..) are really under performances. An analogous example would be Avengers opening to 100m and doing 350 when it actually has the potential to open to 200 and do 650.
Secondly (here too I’m repeating things) there are films that are safe or better based on their initials and costs and so on. But there is a distinction between economics and films that have actually been liked by the audience. So a film that trends poorly can still be good on the economics but that doesn’t mean it’s a film that has been liked. Not that I’m arguing against SMJ. Many of the big films have this kind of trending or worse on much higher totals.
Telugu film #GeethaGovindam emerges a SMASH HIT in USA… Crosses $ 1.5 mn in its extended opening weekend… Speeding towards $ 2 mn… Tue to Thu $ 731,490 Fri $ 240,941 Sat $ 354,433 Sun $ 212,610 Total: $ 1,539,474 [₹ 10.75 cr]@comScore
I’m a little fed up of rumoured films with Aamir Khan. He’s clearly not decided and maybe just sending out feelers. Now on Forest Gump – he’s barking up the wrong tree. Whether it’s a great film or not, the problem is it’s a very well known film and a pointless option devoid of originality. But rather wait to hear it officially as cannot be sure at all. Bharat is fine as I doubt India has a clue about the Korean film.
From Salute to Mahabharata to Oshi to Gulshan Kumar to web series to this. He’s probably just as likely to quit altogether.
to be fair to him he’s probably not creating the rumors himself. He probably doesn’t mind some of the buzz but doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’s actively spreading these stores. But yeah I certainly hope the Gump story isn’t true. To be honest I never much liked the original either.
These rumors are usually floated by those who approach him with the scripts. But MB and FG ones may have been leaks from AKP guyz. I dont think he is in a hurry to sign anything …
yeah true – but there some shroud PR work at play here for sure – keeping him in news for the build up (he doesn’t need that although that is a diff. matter – but YRF might be doing this!)
‘Now on Forest Gump – he’s barking up the wrong tree’
What are you implying here? This seems really offensive to amir fans considering shape of his extra large ears.
Bhai Log!! Calm down. It’s just a movie in the end. Regarding TOH not many have a clue about it. Aamir has already clarified this movie is purely entertainment. So expect some over the top stuff and definitely songs and dances. It won’t be Dangal or SS for sure. Just hope it’s not a D3. The problem with Aamir Khan is we expect a great movie every time. He is allowed zero breaks.
Though I agree with Jay. Don’t want to hear any more movies about that Aamir May do. Whoever is doing it, enough is enough. I think such articles are getting a lot of hits on websites so media is just throwing around half baked news.
I don’t understand why people are so much interested in rumors, while teaser of Thugs of Hindostan is not out yet.
Here is something on Thugs, I think they can release trailer anytime as film is already on editing table-https://www.pinkvilla.com/entertainment/news/aamir-khan-amitabh-bachchan-s-thugs-hindostan-being-edited-inside-theatre-here-s-why-423683
On Thugs, whatever came out I have mixed opinion, I hope it turns out wrong once trailer is out.
1) TBH, I dont like title Thugs of Hindostan, it is better be called Thugs. Thug is derogatory abusive word now. But, it was a clan who had conflicts with British, they were popularized as some inhuman looters while the truth is they were fighting against British the actual looters. So, It makes sense to name it Thugs. There is no such thing like Thugs of Hoindostan, Thugs of USA or Europe… blah blah.
2) I don’t want to see song or dance in this movie. I just want a serious movie straight to the point. Regular mass type song and dance will ruin. There was few images out with Katrina and Aamir in Dhoom3 kinda dance setup. D3 has such bad memory that I don’t want to see Katrina. Aamir has redeem himself after Dangal especially.
3) Director Vijay Krishna Acharya will be last choice to director any amir movie. After Tashan and D3, he backfired twice. Yrf gave him chance to complete 3 movies deal probably. Lets hope he surprises this time.
And
4) amir , please no extra shedding tears. No every movie is supposed to make emotional. Please no forced emotional melodrama. Let it be organic if story allows. And please don’t try to play extra smart to emerge extra heroism like final scene in Dangal where Mahavir Singh is locked up. That was Theo nly negative aspect in dangal.
Sadly, there is no other release allowed from mid oct till end of Nov.
It is like forcing for a regular movie goer to watch this film atleast twice. And if i do i will be made feel as if i have committed some crime. And who will do that? Media, PR of Aamir himself, everytime he promotes movie, he promotes it like it is the first and only thing in your to do list. Many so called actors have become superstars just by virtue of great promotion, PR/marketing, Big festival, holding first two week and 3 weeks post release.
If these so called superstars can allow some other movies to release also , for a regular movie goer like me who watched movie every weekend. I can definitely give it a miss.
Anyone can publish a film. Why don’t producers?
Your list made my day, but that thing is even better. Not allowed. How sad! Aamir’s influence is greater than I thought…
Watch a DVD for other movies. Or TV. We never seen Aamir force people into his movies. There’s nothing to worry about. Trust me.
Nobody, least of all Aamir is forcing people to watch his films. Yes, he publicises in a rush, prior to his film’s release every two years. He has every right todo so. But to declare that Aamir has become a superstar due to marketing and promotion is bloody unfair. A film needs to be promoted so that people are made aware about what is on offer.
And as if other Hindi stars promote any less. Aamir’s promotion is worth it, because his films are worth it. Even Secret Superstar which did not do too well in India, despite appreciation it garnered. It is my considered view that the film could have touched at least rs 75 crores, if only the negativity against Zaira- Aamir had not made a joint impact on the film’s box office. Plus of course the other film, the rival that drew the audience, in the comedy Golmaal Again. I have watched only the firstGolmaal and disliked it, but the series draws audiences in, so good for them, but bad for sensitive smaller films that compete for attention.
I know what i am going o be disappointed by for sure. Song and dance. Katrina is complete unfit and undesired in this movie. I cant tolerate her wooden face, this movie is not supposed to item numbers.
Thugs were a clan, movie is about that clan as specified in Novel ‘confession of a Thug’. There was no such word in dictionary earlier. Thug word was imported in dictionary by British based on this clan as synonym to robbers and assassins , just like
they imported Loot aswell. So , saying Thugs of Hindostan does not sound like movie is talking about origins of Thug. It sounds like thugs existed in all other countries and they are talking about india specifically.
Agar abhi bhi samjh nahi aaye toh Pehle toh fanatism ke lifafe se bahar niklo. Aur phir gooo khana band karo toh baat samajh main bhi aayegi.
What logic is this??? The name TOH specifically highlights the brit origins of the terminology (read hindOstan) and it also specifies that it is an indian film at the same time.
Tajmahal might become very popular word and synonym to Beauty. But, when someone make movie on Tajmahal, appropriate movie name would be Taj Mahal or Taj Mahal of India?
Dude, some basics of grammar … Taj Mahal is a proper noun. Thugs is a collective noun. One does not need specific adjective, but the other gets some clarity.
Noun or collection noun ?
Thugs or Thug is proper title, it doesnt matter as long as essence of the movie is not lost. Thugs of hindostan doesnt make any sense.
Samjne waale samjh gaye hai na samjhe woh anadi hain.
‘Ironically your handle is ‘indian’ john on an Indian film blog…’
John is not Indian name but i am Indian.
Are you pretending or as a fan IQ level goes down? Thank God I am not cursed by any fandom.
Hate Joodta hoon maaf karo. Koi bahas nahi karni.
Gold had a big drop on Monday as it collected 3.75-4 crore nett. The drop is 60% from Friday when the normal drop is 50%. It is the sixth day so you can allow a little bit more than the normal 50% but 60% is going a bit far. It dropped more than Satyameva Jayate as it had a higher ratio of business coming from multiplexes where ticket rates drop on Monday.
Also the film is just for metros going by the Monday figures and if the other cities recorded respectable collections over the first five days it was because of the mass pull of Akshay Kumar. The film is now basically just relying on metros barring Bakri Eid on Wednesday where other cities may get a lift. The collections after six days are 74.25 crore nett for Gold
The first six day business of Gold is as follows.
Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx
Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx
Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 12,00,00,000 apprx
Sunday – 15,25,00,000 apprx
Monday – 3,85,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 74,35,00,000 apprx
The extended first week business should go to around 85-86 crore nett as Wednesday should get a lift in business but the film really needed to be holding better on Monday and go over the 90 crore nett mark for week one..

Did catch this film over the weekend. Overall decent – Rani deserves some decent films, liked her always. The film ultimately is owned by the students who do well. And that guy from Sacred Games is in it… never seen him before and now he’s everywhere doing a similar act!
Kangana Ranaut, unwilling to compromise the progress of her upcoming film Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, has taken up the role of the director in the absence of Krish, reports Mumbai Mirror. As per latest intel from the sets of Manikarnika, Krish’s focus has shifted to the NTR biopic, co-starring Nandamuri Balakrishnan and Vidya Balan, thus Kangana Ranaut decided to direct patched left to complete the film in time to release in on Republic Day next year. “Yes, there is some patchwork still to be completed and Krish has got busy with the NTR biopic. He is not to be blamed, Manikarnika is a period drama and such movies takes time. Kangana speaks to Krish over the phone almost every day to discuss the filming. He is there in spirit with the team,” Kangana’s spokesperson told Mumbai Mirror.
Krish assigned his dates to the NTR biopic, which is also slated to release in the first half of 2019.
National Film Award winner director Krish has refused to do further work in Kangana Ranaut’s superhuman film Manikarnika. This film is about to be released on January 25 next year. According to information, Krish has left the film because of Kangna’s behavior and abuse. The name Kangana Ranaut and discord often comes together in Hindi cinema. Long legal battle with Hrithik Roshan and now film Manikarnika It is worth mentioning that Kangana Ranaut is constantly being associated with sending wrong messages to distributors for Hrithik’s next film Super 30.
Talk about self destruction or greed. She’s already clashing and possibly shifted Hrithik’s dates – now she’s ruining her own film. Talk about an own goal.
Gold beats Satyameva Jayate in overseas
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, Aug 21, 2018 – 11:10 am IST
GOLD has collected approx. 1.5 mil. USD [Rs. 10.43 cr.] in its opening weekend in the overseas markets. On the other hand, SATYAMEVA JAYATE is reported to have collected approx. 429k USD [Rs. 3 cr.] in its opening weekend.
Lol, is this joke? If you google, you’ll know real numbers easily, why trying to create fake numbers like this. Also, this is not a competition between stars but real crises situation in Kerala. Any help is great.
Housefull 4: Akshay Kumar will have a solo dance number in the film choreographed by Farah Khan
FP Staff
A source close to the film told Mirror that filming will take place in Jaisalmer and Ranthambore, “A solo number, choreographed by Farah Khan, at historical locations in Ranthambore that will be picturised on Akshay for over two-three days. Sajid (director Sajid Khan) has been on a recce in Rajasthan for the past few weeks and the team has been working on creating rustic looks for the cast who will be from the times when kings ruled.”
The report also adds that Housefull 4’s final schedule will be shot in Mumbai for which the preparations have already begun and the film is expected to wrap by the end of October or November this year.
Directed by Sajid Khan, Housefull 4 has been reported to revolve around the theme of reincarnation. Besides Kumar, the cast includes Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda and Pooja Hegde.
The film will be released in 2D, conventional 3D and IMAX 3D on 25 October 2019, coinciding with Diwali.

However, a report in The Asian Age has now stated that Priyanka has no marriage plans in near future. The report also stated that the actress has agreed to be a part of Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 4, and it is the Roshans who reportedly confirmed that she is not going to tie the knot soon. She reportedly plans to start shooting for the film from mid-2019.
“Priyanka has definitely given them the green signal for the next instalment of the Krrish franchise. She was a part of the first two Krrish films, and when Rakeshji sounded her out about Krrish 4, she happily agreed to do it,” the report quoted a source close to Hrithik’s family as saying.
“Since she’s such a big global star now, Rakeshji wasn’t sure if she would want to be part of a desi franchise in which she doesn’t play the main character. But Priyanka’s association with the Roshans goes back a long way,” the source added.
Let’s conclude that Priyanka ditched Salman…she has no problems…she is having a jolly good time and bagging good projects (She sensed that Bharat is a turkey or Salman was planning a final dive before his body retires).
On the other hand, Salman is reportedly sulking, Got Katrina on board which is not a better cast and is shooting in Malta for a movie named Bharat.
Bhushan Kumar, in an interview to Mid Day recently revealed that actor Aamir Khan, also the co-producer of Mogul has been an important part of the film’s scripting. Divulging details about the biopic on his father, Bhushan said, “The story is almost ready. Aamir Khan is immersed in the entire scripting process. Subhash Kapoor (director) has spent the past one-and-a-half years researching every detail about my father’s life. The film will start right from when he was a college student to how he sold juice in Daryaganj, Delhi, to how he became a game changer in the music industry.”
Recently, at the IMAX trailer launch of Gold, Akshay was asked whom he thinks is the best alternative for playing Gulshan Kumar in Mogul, to which he replied, “No one besides me.”
I don’t think Akshay can say no to an Aamir khan script. That would be sin. And sorry, Ranbir again in a biopic is not happening.
==================================
2. Aamir Khan to co-produce Mahabharat pentalogy with Akshay
Osho, forrest gump…these are peanuts compared to the mammoth storytelling of Mahabharat. No way Aamir is going to let it go. He will probably start after Mogul. Mogul will see Khan and Kumar bonding and doing Mahabharat together. This time Aamir acting and Akshay producing. Mahabharat is something that bollywood cannot ignore now. In this scriptless world, there is one lying since last 35,000 years.
Only thing that has any sense of truth in this comment is that MB idea is too potent for Aamir to let go. The way I see it, he does not seem ready to plunge into it right now although he has obviously started some prep work.
He will probably do another movie as actor after ToH, which obviously isnt finalized yet. This next film can be expected to release in 2020. The mammoth undertaking of MB will probably roll in 2021, at the ripe age of 55 and it may keep him busy for a decade.
The 9 days extended week is looking to end at 70+ cr nett for SMJ and 85+ cr for Gold. The respective targets of 100 cr and 125 cr will still need some work.
bit off-topic: those who follow US Stock mkts – SP MINI – JAN’18 high 2874 – touched yday there and crashed – H&S pattern – indicates Global mkt fall – sharp correction can come – see now 2848
Not sure if the latter news has direct implications of stock exchange. Whats the basis of your correlation?
These allegations dont destabilize the govt immediately, do they?
In the end of the video we see Rajinikanth entering in the frame with his usual swag. The song looks grand and without any doubt it will grab many eyeballs once it will release. Though we badly miss Akshay Kumar here but makers are hiding him for the last.
Director Shankar Shanmugham recently tweeted: “Hi everyone. At last the VFX companies promised the final delivery date of the VFX shots. The movie will release on November 29, 2018. 2.0.”
The other comic aspect is when completely un-siren-like women are “hotted” up in these videos; Sanon seems like a young woman who has wandered into someone else’s video.
Priyanka Chopra has planned a rickshaw ride for Meghan Markle in Mumbai, read ALL details!
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkAug 22, 2018 – 10:59 am IST

I acknowledged the dual crash of Gold in this thread. BTW Wed>Tues>Mon but largely because of holidays. Movie has been appreciated but not to the extent one thought after day 1 opening which was stunning. Unfortunately Gold couldn’t tap on to this wonderful holiday period to nett over 150. So that way its a disappointment.
Padman is way above any other good movie your favourite actor (whoever he is in Hindi, Kannada, etc) has give or will ever give.
Toilet is an ace. With Padman both the movies succeeded in social impact. Toilet of course became superhit while Padman is a Hit, which could be considered extraordinary given all situations combined.
Earlier Jolly LLB, Rustom were superb movies. The latter fetched the National Awards for Akshay.
Airlift was a masterpiece.
The list goes on. The change started from the Blockbuster/superrhit movie Oh My God where Akshay played an important role of Lord Krishna. Then onwards most of his movies have does exceedingly well.
Gold may also do well but is the first disappointment for me (even thought it will end at 120-125). Industry had expected 150+
If Padman is a washout at 82cr taking its economics and genre into account, then I am curious on your verdict of films like SS of Talaash?
For me all 3 of them have worked to an extent but their respective genres and themes have held them back. But going by your standards, all 3 are disasters, I guess.
Exceedingly, extraordinary, masterpiece, superb…who needs Taran. Frankly this has been a disappointing year for Akshay as both his films have done average business – heck even BOI cannot give a hit verdict so don’t know why BOI’s biggest fan is giving one.
Big holidays create a bit of an illusion regarding collections and drops in numbers in succeeding days. GOLD did 70 cr+ in first 5 days extended weekend which implies an average mean of 14 cr per day. If we consider this number as a “real value” non holiday day 1 number for the film, a lifetime collection of 110-112 cr would not be as bad as it looks with a 25 cr day 1 number.
Release date finalised… Luv Ranjan's #DeDePyaarDe, starring Ajay Devgn, to release on 22 Feb 2019… Costars Tabu and Rakul Preet… Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Ankur Garg… Directed by Akiv Ali.
Oh man! So no entertaining release in whole of october, and the demand for big screen entertainment will be at its peak when ToH releases in diwali. 400 cr in 3 weeks is more probable now.

not sure about youtube views count n trending authenticity.. however if n only if we look at the figures.. batti gul.. at 25+million views, sui dhaga at 23+ million views, manmarziyaan at 12 million views can assume or it gives hint which movie can get a good 1st 3 days opening… what say guys. do give insight on these..
ps : someone told me trending thing is paid service to client to get in that list.. any idea??
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some kind of “assistance” to get to those million viewing numbers, especially if the viewing figures are used to create promotional buzz. Twitter is notorious for having false followers, especially when celebs started competing on the status of their follower figures. So I don’t doubt for a second that figures are manipulated on youtube and instagram too.
Its going to be a bloodbath at BO this Christmas …
*********
FORBES – This Christmas, Hollywood Will Release Eight Huge Movies In Eight Days
Yesterday was Aug. 21, 2018. That means we are just under four months away from Dec. 21, 2018. That date may be arbitrary in its significance, but it is the opening date for a whopping six major studio releases all hoping to cash in on the prime “Christmas-to-New Year’s” holiday blitz. With no Star Wars sucking up the attention and box office bucks, and with Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman proving that a big crowd-pleaser can thrive even against a 1600lb gorilla during the holiday season, every studio is tempting their fate on essentially the same date. It’s going to show that the audience can handle a bunch of big movies even during the Christmas season or it’s going to be a game-changing bloodbath.
Every Christmas season is relatively crowded, with one or two event movies, a handful of studio programmers and various Oscar season flicks expanding or platforming to rack up huge per-theater-averages before going wide in January. That’s how it has always been for at least as long as I’ve followed this stuff. The pre-Christmas weekend is the best weekend of the year, where even a small-scale flick like Mouse Hunt can leg it to $60m from a $6m debut and where Star Wars: The Force Awakens can open with $248m and still leg it to $937m domestic. Let us also remember the Peter Jackson Middle Earth flicks and the James Cameron juggernauts. Christmas weekend is no slouch either, so sayeth Waiting to Exhale, Night at the Museum or Sing.
What’s different this year is three-fold. First, almost every major flick launching on the week of Dec. 14 and Dec. 21 is a major event film that qualifies as a somewhat make-or-break release for the studio. Second, due to the early influx of “big” movies kicking off in January of 2019 (Hellboy on Jan. 11, Glass on Jan. 19), there won’t be as much time for the Christmas biggies (and the expanding Oscar flicks) to leg it out. Third, we know that audiences aren’t necessarily going to flock to non-event films even during the holiday season, which is what doomed All the Money in the World last year. Every studio is using what may be the last no-Star Wars/no-Avatar Christmas for a while to load up.
Sony and Universal/Comcast Corp. are doubling up over the holiday season, while Fox, Paramount/Viacom Inc., Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. and Walt Disney are each launching a very important year-end biggie. So, let’s meet our contestants!
Sony has their animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse launching on Dec. 14 and then the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy Holmes and Watson launching on Dec. 21. Neither film is a do-or-die release, but Sony would like to have a potentially successful Venom and a potentially successful Miles Morales Spidey flick to show that they can in-fact make hit Spider-Man movies outside of their current MCU-affiliated iteration. It will be interesting to see if we get a Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer attached to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (if not Venom) and how that trailer will sell itself without spoiling Avengers 4.
Universal will launch the Peter Jackson-produced The Mortal Engines on Dec. 14 and then Robert Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen on Dec. 21. The former will (again) try to relaunch the sub-genre that is the YA dystopian fantasy after several false starts. Yes, it looks great and Jackson brings an obvious pedigree, but it will be a “new-to-you” and new-to-cinema franchise amid a sea of more well-known IP. The Steve Carell true-life fantasy (about a victim of a hate crime who recovers through the use of model cities) is Universal’s second big Oscar hopeful alongside Damien Chazelle’s First Man, but it is merely hoping to perform more like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ($188m worldwide) than Saving Mr. Banks ($117m worldwide).
Speaking of Mr. Banks, Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns was supposed to launch on Christmas Day. But Disney being Disney, they decided to spike the punch just for spite and drop their Emily Blunt/Lin-Manuel Miranda sequel on Dec. 19. That essentially ruined everyone else’s Christmas as the other biggies launching on Dec. 21 were expecting to have some breathing room between their big pre-Christmas tentpoles and Disney’s holiday-skewed family flick. To be fair, Mary Poppins Returns will stand out from the crowd by being a frothy musical fantasy, as opposed to its more action-packed competition. It is still a vital release for a studio that needs to show that they can deliver live-action hits outside of the Lucasfilm/MCU/live-action adaptation of an animated classic sandbox.
Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel will try to position itself as the next Avatar, since it’s produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In this IP-driven era, its relatively cult source material (a manga) puts it at a disadvantage, but Fox will try to sell the Rosa Salazar sci-fi flick as the unique fantasy spectacular of the season. I’ve been half-expecting Alita: Battle Angel to move, except I’m not sure where it would go. 2019 is already super-crowded, although it can roll the dice in the post-Thanksgiving slot. That slot is usually empty, but The Last Samurai ($456 million worldwide in 2003) proved that it didn’t have to be. Maybe Disney will have something to say about the Fox biggie squaring off against the Disney biggie.
Alita: Battle Angel can’t sell the “ass-kicking female hero” card as a unique variable, as both The Mortal Engines and Bumblebee are female-led action fantasies. Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Bumblebee is a prequel to a franchise that just died. There will be no Transformers expanded universe, and the writers’ room has been disbanded after the lousy ($133 million domestic/$605m worldwide) performance of Transformers: The Last Knight. This Hailee Steinfeld 1980’s-set prequel looks cheaper and smaller-in-scale than the Michael Bay spectacles. But rather than merely offering a different seasoning, it is now responsible for salvaging what was once Paramount’s crown jewel IP. It looks fine (think Monster Truck or Iron Giant), and it’s hoping to be the Jumanji 2 to whatever becomes this year’s Last Jedi.
And that brings us to the movie that, if I had to place a bet, is going to make a run at being this year’s court-appointed Christmas season giant. Or, perhaps a better comparison, if Last Jedi was Avatar, then Aquaman wants to be this year’s Tron: Legacy. Ironically, against the female-fronted likes of Alita, Bumblebee, Mary Poppins and Mortal Engines, the James Wan-directed DC Films flick stands out as an unapologetically macho male-driven action flick. You don’t need me to explain what’s at stake for the DC Films franchise with this Jason Momoa/Amber Heard/Jason Patrick undersea adventure. Wonder Woman has a critical and commercial hit, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were critical whiffs but commercial wins, while Justice League was “none of the above.”
If James Wan delivers a crowd-pleasing “Indiana Jones meets Lord of the Rings, but underwater” adventure flick (and then Shazam delights), then the new DC Films narrative can be “Hey, we make solid solo superhero flicks!”. At this point, they have mostly stumbled with the ensemble flicks, while the stand-alone likes of Man of Steel and Wonder Woman have at least felt like coherent, as-intended movies. Man of Steel has issues, but unlike Suicide Squad and Justice League, it doesn’t feel like it was stitched together with duct tape in the executive boardroom. That means we probably won’t ever get that Justice League 2: Challenge of the Legion of Doom that was cruelly teased at the end of JL, but c’est la vie.
In the first Christmas season without a Star Wars or Hobbit movie since 2011, everything is up in the air. We have frankly never had a situation where almost every major studio (it’s not too late for Lionsgate to move Robin Hood to Dec. 21 just for kicks) has a big and arguably very important release dropping within the same week. Now the Christmas season can support a lot of big product, but these are uncharted waters. Now for the record, which movie comes out on top (or in proverbial last place) is less important than each filmmaking enough to justify itself, but unless one or more of these flicks flee to less-crowded waters, this is going to be a hell of a holiday season.
At the very least, the movie theaters themselves are going to be very happy. And my weekend box office posts are going to be so long and filled with typos. I apologize in advance!

Eid Gives Gold A Lift
Thursday 23 August 2018 11.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Gold got a a lift from Bakr Eid as it grossed 6 crore nett on Wednesday. This has taken the eight day total of the film to 85 crore nett which is decent. The film has a trend of doing better on the holidays and tends to go low on the other days. The first day was very strong and then it did well again on Sunday and Bakr Eid.
There will be drop in collections tomorrow as it come off a holiday and remains to be seen how big this drop is as this will determine the extended first week number. The film has done best in Mumbai (except Gujarat), Delhi / UP, West Bengal and Mysore. The collections in mass circuits have got a lift over the last two days but in the second week the likes of CPCI and Bihar will low. Surprisingly the film has done better than Satyameva Jayate over the Eid period despite that film having more for the Muslim audience.
The growth for Gold has been better over the last two days. The first eight day business of Gold is as follows.
Satyameva Jayate Continues To Do Well
Thursday 23 August 2018 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Satyameva Jayate continued to do well as it collected 5 crore nett on its eight day as it got a boost due to Bakr Eid. The total of the film stands at 62.50 crore nett which is a very good number for this film. There will be a drop in collections tomorrow and probably in week two also but even then it is sure to emerge a HIT.
This film will the biggest HIT for John Abraham as the solo lead although Welcome Back can also be called a solo lead as the other leads were more character actors rather than leads but problem is film was driven by those charcters. Its a big result for Satyameva Jayate and the Friday number will tell how far the film can go.
The first eight day business of Satyameva Jayate is as follows.
Box Office Prediction: Two distinct films release this Friday – Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi and Genius. Both belong to different genres are aiming at set audiences. While former is catering to family audiences, latter is targeted at youth. The good part about both the films is that they can find traction at multiplexes as well as single screens and that too across A, B as well as C centres.
Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is the sequel to Happy Bhag Jayegi which was a successful film. The Mudassar Aziz directed film was released exactly two years ago and though it had started slow, there was good traction over a period of time. Now producers Krishika Lulla and Aanand L. Rai have scaled up the film further and incorporated the whole China angle to it. Moreover, Sonakshi Sinha has joined Jimmy Sheirgill as well in the Happy endeavour which makes the film even bigger.
On the other hand Genius is directed by veteran filmmaker Anil Sharma who has been around for over three decades now and delivered quite a few action blockbusters. Now that he is launching his son Utkarsh with the action-musical, he has left no stones unturned to make this debut a biggie. Himesh Reshammiya’s music for the film has been liked too and the masala flavour should attract the gentry.
Gold movie is based on India’s win in 1935 at Berlin Olympics as British India Team and then in 1948 at London Olympics as Independent India Team.
It is told from the eyes of Tapan Das, played by Akshay Kumar. Tapan is a crazy bengali who is passionate about Team India Hockey winning Gold at Olympics. His passion starts from the win at Berlin Olympics when he realises that one day his team will win for Independent India.
However the next two Olympics are not held due to world war. He is shattered and becomes alcoholic. His wife played by the fiesty Mouny Roy supports him despite getting irritated of his aimless wilderness. During this time he works for wrestling team, but with little success. He knows his life mean hockey and only hockey. He is frustrated till he reads in a newspaper that London Olympics is confirmed in 1948.
His passion is reignited and the story to scout for sponsors, coach, players begins. The story covers the pain of India’s partition and thereby him losing key players including the captain to Pakistan….Akshay is able to bring forth the frustration, struggle, pain in the character of Tapan Das. He speaks bengali in a funny way which works big time as he does it with elan without appearing caricaturish. Any other actor would have failed. Infact, his bengali act could go down as the most memorable from any non-bengali actor in the history of Hindi cinema.
Akshay Kumar is the soul of the movie. He is the reason why the team was able to go to London, play unitedly and he uses his experience to help in tactical hockey. He can be considered as architect of Indian Hockey.
The movie tackles several issues prevalent at the time of independence.
The star cast is superb. Amit Sadh plays a thakur of a province and effectively shows his difficulty in adjusting to commands and democratic ways. His tussle with his own ego is well scripted.
Sunny Kaushal as Himmat Singh plays a great character of a hot headed Sardaar who gets to play only the finals. His frustration of not being included in the playing eleven and his confrontation with the vice captain looks genuine. He is supremely talented and we will be hearing more about him. His look is similar to Farhan’s look as Milkha Singh.
Vineet Kumar Singh who plays the captain of Tampan’s eleven only to chose Pakistan over india, is superb. Nowhere one feels him taking a wrong decision. In fact the movie succeeds big time in showcasing the pain of every muslims who left India for Pakistan.
The movie has a brilliant second half. Before the movie i had thought that comparison with Chak De would be there. But while watching the film, there is no scope for comparision. Both the movies were as different as Dangal/Sultan were in the backdrop of wrestling.
Just for the sake of pleasure, let me compare Chak De India with GOLD. For me Chak De is the best sports movie ever made. It’s above Lagaan/Dangal/Sultan. The feelings were genuine and hockey as a sports is definitely the best to watch after football.
Chak De remains my favourite. That would be 6/5 (>100% satisfaction). Dangal was 5/5, Sultan was 4.5/5
I have never watched an Akki movie in theater – never! however have seen lot of his movies on DVDs/net – i can understand ur enthusiasm for ur favorite star. Akki is a good actor but he does not take the interest in overall product – that keeps him in mediocre BO brackets – and he is ok with it – becoz he wants to do 5-7 films a year – that is fine. I think he is quite a humble human being and the hardship he has seen (he was a waiter) keeps him working harder and harder……so as long as the sun shines….make the hey!
He certainly does need to deliver it. But he does deliver those 100-130cr range 3 or 4 times a year. To go above that, he will need to work in a bigger budget movie made on a larger scale.
Such a film will probably certainly take more time. I do think the model Akshay Kumar is working in should be the least of our concerns. Producers and distributors are regularly making money with his films. He keeps the wheel turning.
He can’t challenge the likes of Aamir or Salman with this model.
But still regularly making some of these 30-50cr range medium budget films work is not easy. One could see with SS or DZ that it’s not easy to make these small to medium budget films earn big in India.
No wonder the 300cr plus movies are films like Bahubali, Dangal, TZH, PK, Sanju or Padmaavat, films made on huge canvas and they took years in production.
But another fact is that from what I gather, Gold is hardly a tremendous film as well. It seems an above average film that will likely be above average at the BO. It earns what it deserves.
Akshay Kumar has been doing good films for a while now. But he hasn’t yet gone that step further to deliver a superlatively fabulous film. For that, he will need to devote more time on all aspects of a film.
Padman and Jolly LLB 2 were made in similar small budgets.
As for genre, I guess a film on sanitary pads for women or on use of toilets are audience friendly for you. But anyone out there knows these are taboo subjects for most people.
13 Years of Iqbal: Actor Shreyas Talpade says his debut film Iqbal, which will complete 13 years since its release on August 26, 2005, is a movie that made his family proud of him.
In the Nagesh Kukunoor directorial, Shreyas essayed the role of a deaf and mute youngster aspiring to be a cricketer.
Not arguing against those constantly harping that Gold and SMJ are BO hits. By Taran’s figures Gold has done nearly 90 cr in extended week one of 9 days. SMJ has done 75 cr in the same period. Together the business has been a whopping 165 cr! Distributors, exhibitors, producers, stars and their fans are all happy.
However, I will be v surprised if either of these 2 ‘hits’ gather more than 12 cr each in second weekend. That IMO is going to be the true measure of audience acceptance – no matter how much you twist the story otherwise.
Gold and SMJ wont go beyond 115 cr and 100 cr respectively.
Guess whats the greatest irony in Kashyap’s life and his admirers? THIS is releasing along with Kashyap’s venture into routine multiplex romance (something that suits Rai, but not him). At least this trailer is a lot more impressive than anything that Manmarziyan makers had dished out yet.
On conclusion one can easily say that SMJ has done far better than Gold keeping into consideration the budget as well as starcast. Gold at the best may get an above average tag whereas, SMJ is heading towards superhit status. In short John has won the battle against Akshay despite being a low profile actor/ star.
New release date for #HelicopterEela: 12 Oct 2018… Since director Pradeep Sarkar is diagnosed with dengue, Ajay Devgn has taken a decision to resume work on the film after Sarkar is discharged from hospital… Ajay Devgn and Jayantilal Gada have now shifted the film to 12 Oct.
On the other hand, the sequel is expected to have Sushant Singh Rajput and Kartik Aaryan. Another name that has started doing the rounds is that of Vicky Kaushal who was recently seen in Sanju. As for the leading lady too, the details are yet to be locked. It has also been learnt that the film may revolve around a casino with a Chinese owner and the makers are keen on roping in Jackie Chan for the role.

Naveen:

Addatoday predicting 25cr opening for Gold today. Highest Akshay Kumar opener for sure.
SJ is the surprise here. From morning trends, it is being claimed that 15cr is very much on the cards and it even may go higher to 17cr, depending on the evening shows.

This is from the now defunct impact index:
In the 1960s, for a minimum of 15 Tests, four Indian batsmen had a higher batting average than Ajit Wadekar’s 34, whose contribution in winning causes – and low scoring matches – was far superior to that of his peers. In fact, for a minimum of 30 Tests, he emerges as India’s second-highest impact Test batsman. Wadekar was instrumental to India’s path breaking series wins over New Zealand and England away from home.
Apparently a big match player!

Now, Tiger and JA are scoring big there.

Dont understand what is Zero doing in this poll.
There are better looking film at this stage. And whatever came out from Zero sofar looks gimmick and cheap.
How can one not count Total Dhamal and Simbba especially total dhamal has huge starcast and Indra kumar is known for huge entertainers. This will be fun family entertainer unlike Masti series.
Also, kedarnath has very interesting and refreshing subject. This is a big budget movie. Abhishek kapoor has all ingredients to surprise with this one.

Ryan Gosling is probably the best North American actor working right now. Don’t think he can hold his own against Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman or Eddie Redmayne, just to name a few British actors off the top of my head.

Lol

Dunno whats the prob with Kashyap these days. His actors do their job well, the settings are as authentic as ever … yet I get hyper bored with his storytelling. The only reason I am looking forward to Manmarzian is the three leading actors in it.

Thugs or Thug is proper title, it doesnt matter as long as essence of the movie is not lost. Thugs of hindostan doesnt make any sense.

Top 2 creatives by Aamir Khan from 2019-2022
1. Aamir Khan to co-produce and direct Akshay Kumar in Mogul.
Source: https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/aamir-khan-mogul-bhushan-kumar-5291176/
==================================

Sir Montana,
You are lying about me.

Wednesday – 25,25,00,000 apprx
Thursday – 8,00,00,000 apprx
Friday – 10,00,00,000 apprx

Wednesday – 18,50,00,000 apprx
Thursday – 7,50,00,000 apprx
Friday – 7,50,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 7,25,00,000 apprx
Sunday – 9,75,00,000 apprx

I watched GOLD yesterday.
My Gold Review:
Dangal was 5/5, Sultan was 4.5/5
Gold is 4/5
A must watch patriotic entertainer!!!
