  1. All this is fine but they need some other A-list actors in this project to get going. Abhishek Bachchan, Pulkit Samrat and Sooraj Pancholi are not the actors you can pull off a massive budgeted movie!

  3. Sooraj Pancholi is not in it. The cast is yet to be announced and only Abhishek Bachan and Pulkit Samrat have been confirmed till here.

I don’t mind a JP Dutta war film. Few (if any) in Bollywood can deliver a good war film. But JP Dutta certainly can.

    • Dutta was visually very impressive in LoC. the thing though is he needs to get far more imaginative in his storytelling. At least when he shoes groups he tends to get very repetitive telling their stories in sequence. Also, as I’ve said before, choosing the ’62 war is unusual. It went so badly for India that it would be hard to sell this to the audience. Specially today. One of the other stories suggested that the Defense Ministry had encouraged this one. Which also makes me dubious!

    • also I wish he’d turn to Rajasthan again. His war films for me never matched the terrain of that earlier work. Refugee was excellent in the first half, could have been a great film had it maintained the logic of this portion in the second half as opposed to turning all conformist. In general I’m not a great fan of war films. I appreciate a well-made effort but the ‘easy’ messages of most war films are not really up my alley. Again LoC was visually often extraordinary (the pre-interval action sequence for example) but it needed to be much more tightly edited (still like the film which is not something I can say for Border). Dutta’s ultimate film though remains Ghulami, and to my mind one of the greatest commercial films of Hindi cinema.

  4. Ghulami, Yateem and Batwaara remain his most remarkable films IMO. These were the genuine JP Dutta films.

Border was his blockbuster. Hathyaar was alright, as was Refugee pre-interval. LOC and Kshatriya were grand scale, with huge casts, but disappointments in terms of the narrative.

    • Except Border, all his films were crapfest. Probably in those days few were liked but now they look C grade films.

  5. REVEALED The names of the LEADING MEN of J.P. Dutta’s Paltan

After having made films like LOC Kargil, Refugee, Border and likes, the veteran film maker J. P. Dutta is now all set with his most ambitious project titled Paltan, something that we had reported a few days back. After the film maker revealed the logo of the film, everyone were eagerly awaiting the names of the actors who will be a part of ‘history’ in the making. Reports have it that, the film is based on the 1962 Indo-China war.

So far, the names who have been confirmed in Paltan include Arjun Rampal, who will be playing the role of a Lieutenant Colonel in the film. Besides him, the others who have been signed include Abhishek Bachchan, Pulkit Samrat, Jackie Shroff, Sonu Sood, Luv Sinha, Siddhanth Kapoor and Suniel Shetty in prominent roles. As far as leading ladies are concerned, there have been no details on the same.

While Arjun Rampal, Siddhanth Kapoor and Pulkit Samrat took to the social media and announced them being a part of Paltan by stating “I am part of the PALTAN are you? #JPDutta #brothers #jaihind”, Abhishek Bachchan and Suniel Shetty tweeted stating “Brother to my left, brother to my right. Together we stand. Together we fight! I too am a part of the PALTAN, are you? #JPDutta #JaiHind”. On the other hand, while the hunky Sonu Sood announced him being a part of the film by stating “Wars come n go..but Soldiers stay eternal”…..I am part of the PALTAN ..are you! #paltan #jpdutta”, Luv S Sinha stated “United we stand! I’m part of the PALTAN, are you? #jpdutta #JaiHind #brotherhood #War #Heroes”.

As far as leading ladies are concerned, there have been no details on the same. Watch this space for developments.

    • I think the pre-condition to select the starcast was to select everyone who is less of a star than Abhishek Bachchan so it comes across as Abhishek’s movie. So that’s how you end up getting such names attached to the project. With names like Pulkit Samrat, Luv Sinha, Siddhanth Kapoor…and older folks like Sunil Shetty, Jackie, Arjun Rampal the correct title for the movie should be ‘Berozgaar Paltan’

  6. I feel the cast is quite underwhelming for a JP Dutta film. The most important thing will be to get his story-telling right (it went horribly wrong in LOC).

Jackie Shroff was on the decline at the time of Border and he had limited footage. We are now talking about 20 years later and he has no BO pull on his own. Sunil Shetty had an insignificant part in LOC (his moment of decline had already started) and we are looking at 15 years later when he is barely getting any work.

Guys like Pulkit Samrat, Luv Sinha, Sidhant Kapoor have barely proved themselves till now.

You look at LOC, actors like Manoj Bajpai, Nagarjuna were willing to do cameos. Sanjay Dutt had accepted a role with very limited footage.

Are actors like John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor or Saif too big to sign a JP Dutta war film these days? They are hardly doing wonders at the BO in their last few showings. Why not Akshay Khanna when you can cast Arjun Rampal in a war film of all people??

    • I had mentioned that this is the only film Abhi has signed sometime back. But unfortunately this could be an addition to the disaster list. With Dutta at the helm the budget would be huge. And its unlikely this cast can save the movie. He should have taken atleast a John Abraham or a Vidyut who have a good market in the action segment..

      Like

  7. Agreed. It’s not that John Abraham or Vidyut are big stars on their own but in an action ensemble I can see them contributing, especially when initial is essential these days.

Border, for example had in Sunny Deol, the biggest action star of that time, on a hot streak (coming just after Ghatak, Jeet and Ziddi), Sunil Shetty, regarded as a solid action hero at that time (he was getting better deals than Akshay Kumar back then). There was then Akshay Khanna (promising star kid) and Jackie Shroff (fading but still decent pull as a supporting actor). Then there were the likes of Sudesh Berry, Puneet Issar, Kulbushan Kharbandra, that weren’t there for the initial BO pull but who were known to be good supporting actors.

As for Abhishek, I think his project with Nishikant project is on, isn’t it? Read a recent report that Pakhi Hegde (of Mohenjodaro) has been signed opposite him. And the Ronnie Screwvala production c-starring Irfan Khan also seems on. Not heard much of Lefty, the Prabhu Devaa project lately. The latter has just announced another directorial venture. Any news of Priyadarshan’s Bachan Singh?

  8. JP Dutta was one the GOATs of Bollywood cinema. He made 4 Masterpieces in Ghulami, Hathyar, Yateem and Batwara. His Kshatriya was brilliant but let down by a poor climax. His downfall began with the OTT Border. My wish is for him to return to his early form of movies and stop making unnecessary war films! I still feel he has a few more masterpieces left in him. But no war films please. I cannot separate Ghulami or Hathyar as his BEST.
I also feel he should have made Ghulami with Big B and lament the fact that Bandhua with Big B was shelved.

  9. The increasingly strained relationship between India and China is slowly but surely making its effects felt in Bollywood. mid-day had earlier reported how the makers of Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 had deferred their China schedule.
Now, JP Dutta’s Paltan, which is based on the 1962 Indo-China war and stars Abhishek Bachchan, has fallen prey to the tension between the neighbouring countries. The filmmaker has had to drop the idea of casting Chinese actors in his war drama — this, after he had already approached casting agencies in China to scout for two actors who would play Chinese officers in the movie.
Dutta’s daughter and executive producer of Paltan, Nidhi says, “We’ve decided not to get Chinese actors on board. The decision was made last week. I had wanted Chinese actors because I wanted to make Paltan as authentic as possible. I’m trying to recreate the actual incidents that had happened in the Indo-China war. It was difficult to convince dad to go ahead without Chinese actors, but we had no option, given the political climate.”

        • there has to be a pretty good reason behind this. He’s not the sort of guy who suddenly pulls out of a project at the last minute (in fact even more generally actors don’t do this these days). Specially when he has a good relationship with Dutta. Obviously it’s bad form to do this sort of thing. On the other hand he’s taken on all kinds of risky projects in the past and never done this. Not sure what’s going on here. It’s not as if he figured out a day or two before the shoot was about to begin that this is a risky film and director! Either something changed with the film in some sense and he wasn’t happy with the development or there’s some other project that he’s prioritizing (either one of the many rumored projects or a new one we haven’t heard of before). Now of course it reflects less kindly on him if the latter is the reason.

Could be the final nail on the coffin, unfortunately.

      • Abhishek’s career unfortunately. I hope some decent project of his goes on the floors. But nothing looks like happening. He hasn’t signed for any project for years now. There have been lots of rumours and lots of unofficial announcements during the last year or so. But nothing has materialised.

Paltan was the one looking likely to happen. I do hope that the ‘personal reason’ for backing out is genuine and more importantly nothing really serious in his personal life.

Dutta, on his day is a tremendous film-maker. But, there was something quite underwhelming about Paltan (especially the rest of the cast doesn’t look too great).

I hope I am way off the mark and Abhishek has something really good lined up and has pulled out because of that. But there is one line he uses quite frequently, i.e. “Beggars cannot be choosers” and even Paltan could have been a decent project to make a come-back for him. Let us just hope there is something better lined up and it is not the end of him.

I am a big ABJr fan and it hurts to see his career going the way it is right now.

        • I thought you were commenting on Dutt’s coffin! LOL

I dont think Paltan will turn out to be a significant film. So probably Abhishek is not losing out anything here. Its just that its easier to make a comeback if you are in the grind, than completely out of it. Salman was hardly a top star in the noughties, but he was constantly doing one film or another, although most of it was biting the dust. I think that process helped him once he found a footing again with Wanted, and turned it into a revival.

Even Aamir has been constantly working through films for a long time before Lagaan happened. Many of his pre-Lagaan films are just garbage (specially in the initial years). The younger stars (not Khans) will do themselves lot of good to keep working constantly than taking breaks or being too choosy.

Anyways, I am not sure if Abhishek does not have any films because of lack of option or by his own choice. Probably both reasons are true to some extent. Same seems to be the case with Hritik Roshan too, one wont expect him to do Anand Kumar biopic if he had other options.

Anyways, the likes of Abhishek and Hritik may not make a comeback ever, after losing their sheen. It is more likely. The younger lot of Varun, Ranveer, Ranbir have interesting/lucrative releases coming up in Judwa 2, Padmavati and Dutt. Their success will make it more difficult for Abhishek/Hritik to make comebacks. Once the audience has moved on, it is always difficult.

        • Aamir was never in Salman’s position though. He always maintained a very good success rate, certainly after HHRPK (after DHKMN he had some failures and never forgot that lesson). In fact ratio-wise it was the best of the period. Yes with Lagaan he reinvented himself altogether but he was never in the position Salman was for many years where he was around but doing nothing films for the most part.

        • V true! I meant the quality of films for Aamir in the pre-Lagaan phase. He was no doubt one of the top stars in nineties too. For Salman, it was about becoming a top star again in this decade.

          Thanks for stressing that.

  13. The REAL reason WHY this actor WALKED out of a film suddenly!

When an actor walked out of an action drama, just days before the shoot started, the film industry was abuzz with curiosity. The actor has not signed any films in recent times and left more than the usual leading to speculation whether everything is fine with his personal life. Where this particular film was concerned, the actor appeared to be very interested and excited to be part of the film as it was by a filmmaker he was very fond of. He made his debut in the filmmaker’s film and is considered to be like his family.

Just a couple of days before the shoot began in the cold climes of north India, the actor even met up with the unit and had long discussions about his look and what scenes they would shoot. He has been having these discussions for months now and always appeared to be very excited about the film which is why his erratic behavior has been more of a shock to the filmmaker who is known for his larger-than-life emotional, action dramas.

Before they were to fly out for their outdoor, apparently the actor got cold feet. What was even stranger was that the actor’s father (a Bollywood celeb in his own right) called up the director at night and told him that his son could not be part of the shoot anymore and to let him be excused. When the stunned filmmaker could barely mutter ‘why’ the father said he has just ‘one son and could only do so much’ and rang off. There has been no communication between the younger actor and the filmmaker since then after meeting him at his office – not one text message or call. His business manager has been fending all calls. The actor shares a strong emotional bond with the filmmaker and it is believed that he could not muster the courage or heart to tell him he wasn’t available for his film. He has been over at the filmmaker’s house on various occasions including the recent Ganesh Chaturthi festival but didn’t mention a word to anybody even then. Right now he is also very busy with his sports franchise and is able to devote his time only for that.

While no excuse has been cited for the actor’s bizarre walkout from his side, certain people in the film industry feel that the younger actor’s wife and father was not keen for him to act in the action drama. They have more ambitious plans for him and as he is doing films after almost two years, they want him to sign the right film. But the right film has turned out to be a wrong choice for the filmmaker who has been left scratching his head as to whom to take at this last moment. There has also been a lot of gossip coming from trade sources also regarding the finances of the filmmaker (though he has a studio in place) which the people close to him feel, is being spread by the actor and his family to justify his exit from the film.

The truth, we hope, shall come out – as it always does.

    • Abhishek has made the right call here but in an extremely negative way. It suggests he really is unclear on his next move. I don’t think a multistarrrer war film is the way for him.

A last minute rejection is thoroughly uncalled for especially for a director who launched him. Many would already consider him a no go, now it’s even tougher.

      Like

      • Yes, but it does seem that he was the main man here. That was the best thing about the project for him. There then was a director was quite good at a certain time. Even his last few movies were decent. It’s not like Subhash Ghai making Kisna or Yuvraaj. On his day, Dutta can still make a good, war film. And there are few in Bollywood right now who will be as at home in the genre as him.

The genre itself is risky but there seems to be more chance of such a subject working now than 5 years or so back.

The project also looks to be quite a big one. Dutta is known to make his movies on a grand scale and as true to life as possible. So, Abhishek IMO was fortunate enough to find himself leading a big project when he has delivered little and has been out of work lately. It’s certainly much better than being the lead for crap like AIW or playing insignificant parts like in HNY or D3.

I don’t think the film being a multi-starer being a problem here. He accepted those small parts in HNY or D3 and H3. Here, he was the main man.

I don’t also think he has rejected the film for another better project. He has always been known to work in several projects simultaneously and currently dates and schedules should be the least of his problems.

It just seems he seems uncertain about the next step. But time is quickly running out. He could have made the film just to be in the running and to remain relevant. He will now most probably find himself in Akshaye Khanna’s situation. 8 years back, the latter had the meatiest part of Race 1. Too much time out and now he is struggling to find decent supporting roles.

  15. I think Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Randeep or even John Abraham could be decent options for a war film.

Abhishek was seen attending some film event the next day after the reports his quitting the movie came out.

He did look quite excited doing this project initially. In fact, it seemed that he left other projects for this one.

It does look quite unprofessional from whichever angle you look at it. And it is one thing you could never accuse Abhishek of previously throughout his career.

It does hurt his reputation. It does also hurt his chances of coming back, because he hasn’t signed for anything since years now. The film may come out and not do great business eventually but it’s still better than not being around at all for years.

But, above all, it certainly hurts the producer more. They will have to find a replacement when the shoot has already started.
