JP Dutta is particularly famous for his films showcasing the army’s on-field action and for this, he had been invited by the Ministry of Defence for the third time to make a film on the iconic event in the history of the Indian Armed Forces. With ‘Paltan’, JP Dutta wants to reveal how India got its victory over China in 1967, which has not been talked about much.

The Ministry of Defence gave a standing ovation at the special screening of JP Dutta’s ‘Paltan’. The special screening was held for the Ministry of Defence, as the plot revolves around the lives of some unknown heroes of the Indian army. The film was highly appreciated by India’s Ministry of Defence, as the story reveals the true incidents from the lesser known battle of the 1967 war at the Sikkim border.

  6. From the couple of reviews of Paltan, it does seem that Sonu Sood and Arjun Rampal are the main leads. So, maybe Abhishek was right to leave the film, if he was to play second fiddle to guys like Rampal and Sood.

I do hope for JP Dutta’s sake that the film works. Grew up watching films like Ghulami, Yateem, Batwara, Kshatriya and then Border. But casting actors like Rampal as the main lead when in the past he could cast anyone in the industry shows the tremendous decline down the years.

dutta has lost his touch like Ghai. and this is purely a commercial venture cashing on his image….sad but true, it is time for him to hang his boots. Low-cost actors and sell the product at 15-20 cr + satelite etc. another 20 cr – and dutta has made his money. John Mathew is the same as he rushed to sign JA for Sarfarosh sequel – big money is the surest lure and we can’t blame them in this age – but then we get mediocre products…..

      • It is indeed sad to see Dutta — who directed some of the best Hindi films of the 1980s (Ghulami, Batwara, Yateem, Hathyar) — come to this. LoC was terrible, so long and interminable, with no sense of the sort of directorial/editorial scalpel that would shape the narrative and make it interesting, and Paltan seems like more of the same.

thanks for NOT mentioning Rajkumar Rao 🙂 after Newton-oscar entry (was chosen over Dangal!) and for his not-so-great performances, the way ppl have made him kind of “modern-day-dilipkumar” with highly overrating him and exaggerating him – i avoid his films! kuch bhi!!!! they did the same with bajpai, irfaan, nawaaz when some of their films worked and now? all those guy are struggling at the BO since 3 years – all their films have bombed at the BO. Acting skills are there – but to praise them to the sky as if all those aamir-khans are over and these guys are in is bit too much!

      • Even on acting, while Rajkumar Rao is good his forte is a certain kind of comic role (where the joke is to some extent ON HIM); can’t really tell yet if, away from that sort of thing he will be good. On the others, Bajpai is a much superior actor to Irfaan or Nawaaz, both of whom are quite limited (they are effective for sure but without ever dispelling the impression that they couldn’t do stuff far afield of what they are doing; goes back to Satyam’s point about the “star signature” — in the world of the “smaller film”, Irrfan / Nawaazuddin are no less “repetitive” than a major commercial star — they might work in many different sorts of films, BUT the audience knows what it is going to get).

        • and to add to my point – check out today’s bajpai’s films collection – TOTAL washout! now this is his 5th or 6th film in a row in last 3-4 years – where BO is completely dismal….so where do you put him now? good actor – yes, saleable? hmmmmm….

        • These actors are full time character actors who occasionally dabble into solo films. They aren’t expecting huge openings, it is not the best way to judge them. To be frank the armchair viewer doesn’t even know Bajpai etc but they are also not front page of Filmfare either. They deserve the odd film where they are the lead and it’s not like huge budgets are riding on them.

      • I do like Nawaz though and find him special. Found him hilarious in The Lunchbox — in which I found Irfaan effective and good, but finally loved the bumbling character played by Nawaazuddin. Loved that scene towards the end, where he uses his scooter ( still decorated with shaadi roses) to help Nimrat reach the station in time. Love his throwaway dialogue delivery. I loved him in too. He and Kareena stood out first for me, and only then my favourite Aamir. ☺️ Sorry Aamir. But the characterisation, the performance , all these things matter, and a non- favourite may be preferred to a favourite, in a particular film.

But Aamir has this total commitment towards his film. And that is why he is in his special place. To me his best film is a Dangal — and I wish there would be another like it. It was commercial enough without losing its niche special status. Hats off of course to writer director Nitesh Tiwari. But Aamir has his own contribution.

Will TOH be good enough? Hmmm…

        • In my opinion any competent star or actor can play any role. If one says that only certain actor can play a certain role. it is like one saying my mother is the best. But if that same person is born to another good mother he or she will say the same thing to her too. But then stars and actors have their own signature and contribution and that makes us separate the stars or actors and go for one or another. Unless the star takes more interest and starts to interfere or contribute, things will be the same for one actor or another.
One may like a massy star or one may like a niche star or film. One may like both.
I feel Nawazuddin is massy in some way unlike other arty stars. One must be in tune with the latter to appreciate while the former does not need any such thing to get our appreciation.

        • massy yes but only when he is as a supporting actor – carrying a film as a solo hero is a totally different ball-game where none of these guys have succeded…..reminds me of Naseer/Om Puri – both of them were fantastic actors and initially pulled off a few hits but later on they found it very difficult to prove their metal at the BO. I am not comparing them by acting skills here but they were somewhat in that off-beat genre and could never break out from there…..this is where a aamir’s acumen is handy – he perfectly knows that what paying audience likes and yet dares to mix up lot of refined aspects of cinema in his products.

Sippy leisurely made this labor of love a t a staggering 3 hrs running time…i think it was an ordinary love story told very nicely by Sippy and why it failed at BO is still a mystery….there were lot of stories like Dimple did not sign Sadmaa becoz her dates were given to Saagar (what an irony!) and G P Sippy went bankrupt making this film as Ramesh went on reshooting the films for 3 years! I think Kamal Haasan has never been the same natural actor now…..

Speaking to Bombay Times, Salman also said that he offered to work out the dates keeping Priyanka’s engagement and an impending wedding in mind but the actress appeared to have had made up her mind: “She was getting engaged and I told her, ‘If you are getting engaged, what’s the need (of exiting the project)?’ Then she said, ‘Shaadi karni hai’, to which I said, ‘Toh shaadi kar lo’. Priyanka’s work was for 75-80 days. Shaadi ke liye chaar din ka preparation, aur chaar din ki shaadi, aath din ke andar ho gayi aur phir uske baad honeymoon. So, we said we will work it out. But she was very clear that she didn’t want to be a part of the film.”

  17. Aamir’s next will depend on BO returns of ToH – the ROI (both time and money) will determine IF he is willing to take time-out to develop the MB series of films …

    *****************

A source close to the development reveals, “Aamir and Bhushan Kumar [producer] have constantly been brainstorming about who should play the lead. Since the two haven’t been able to zero in on an actor who fits the bill, Aamir is now putting serious thought into slipping into the role himself. The film’s final draft is currently being written, with him monitoring its progress and giving inputs wherever needed. But right now, his top priority is Thugs Of Hindostan. Once he wraps up the post-production work on the film, he will read the final script of Mogul and take a call.”

While it was earlier suggested that Khan will train his sights on the Osho biopic after Thugs Of Hindostan, the plan seems to have undergone a change. “After undergoing several look tests, Aamir felt that he wasn’t able to look the part of Osho. So, he has decided to forgo the project for the moment. Though he is also committed to the long-drawn Mahabharata series, Mogul is likely to be his next project. He will make an announcement by year-end.”

      • In case they decide not to gloss over the unsavoury parts of Gulshan Kumar’s life, I think Mogul can be a good film. Not all biopics need to be about heroes. Here is a man , who is a nobody and creates an empire. The India of the 80s and 90s obviously did not support entrpreneurship and anyone who wanted to become big had to resort to a lot of shortcuts .
The manner in which he died was tragic and I can see great drama in this story- provided it is done well.

Let us see and hope it does not turn out to be another Sanju( not in terms of BO but in whitewashing)

        • You expect no whitewashing from a commercial movie floated by the mogul’s son?

Also when the only reason for Aamir to do this (IF he does) is peer pressure and a shortcut BO hit? This will be much worse than Sanju.

Aamir will make an interesting film whether acting in it or not.
While I have some doubts about TOH and its female leads and its overall premise. Aamir will have more control over GK film than TOH and that is a good thing.

        • In any case aamir wudnt be considering mogul if hirani/ranbir did not get a 340 cr hit biopic. So peer pressure is a factor here. The other factor is mogul wont take much time, so he will do it for sure if toh underperforms and he can get a quick bo hit without too much effort and time – shortcut remedy.

        • I agree with Sanjana here, The subject makes for an interesting film . It is all there- humble beginnings, ambition to achieve success at all cost, total power and then the downfall. It has been a long time since the hero died on screen – so the material is there. What they make out of it is the million dollar question. Aamir also must be looking at China where films which are more connected to reality have a greater chance of succeeding.

I would rather Aamir makes Mogul rather than the Osho biopic( which would be a disaster in my opinion)

          Liked by 2 people

        • Agree with Lata that Mogul is a far better choice than Osho! If he decides to do Mogul as a quickie, it is his personal choice.

I would personally prefer him to do SJ season 4 after ToH (which hopefully becomes a big hit) and then take up MB films.

  20. ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp’ Surpassing Original Film By $100 Million
    ——————————-

It’s official — Marvel Studio’s latest blockbuster Ant-Man and the Wasp topped $600 million early this week. The film should reach/exceed $620 million by the end of its theatrical run. Boosted by a big bow in China and last weekend’s opening in Japan, Peyton Reed’s super-sequel ensures Marvel will top $4 billion in global receipts this year, including a terrific $1.59 billion in North America alone, giving the studio it’s biggest year by far both domestically and worldwide.

Ant-Man and the Wasp should be able to add another $1.2+/- million from foreign markets outside of China and Japan, while nabbing an additional $5-10+/- million in China and $10+/- million in Japan. So it looks like the international box office will provide about $20+/- million in the coming weeks, while the domestic front should be able to produce another $1+ million.

The final worldwide cume, then, should put Ant-Man and the Wasp somewhere in the $620 million range, with perhaps $615 million as the lower end of outcomes and $625 million as the higher end. Better holds in Japan and China going forward will really determine the final results, obviously, and my own estimate is a grand total of $622+/- million. That would place the sequel roughly $100+ million ahead of the original Ant-Man, close to a 20% increase, give or take.

With a production budget of about $160 million, plus modest marketing costs in the range of $100 million, Ant-Man and the Wasp basically covered its expenses when it crossed $520 million worldwide (studios generally receive roughly half of the global receipts, although the rising relative portion of box office driven by foreign theaters that return a lower percentage to studios is shifting the number downward over time). That, in turn, means a $620+/- million grand total would give the studio somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million in “profit” (although back-end points and other factors will lead to adjustments in that figure).

Whether the budget number is before or after rebates and credits, though, is a bit uncertain; but I’m betting Georgia tax credits and other incentives helped bring the final costs down considerably, perhaps as low as $130-140 million for the production budget. Which, obviously, boosts the actual profit margins.

The first Ant-Man took more than $68 million in domestic DVD/Blu-ray sales alone. Add in rentals, Digital-HD, and foreign sales/rentals, and we’re talking about easily $100-150 million from home entertainment where profit margins are much higher than theatrical sales. So it’s safe to say box office and home release should result in somewhere around $100+ million in revenue from Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While that’s not the same level of massive revenue generated by Black Panther or Avengers: Infinity War, for example, those films had vastly higher production budgets and marketing expenses. Ant-Man and the Wasp in comparison is “the little engine that could” for Marvel, and serves a different purpose in the larger studio planning and revenue streams. Combined, Ant-Man plus Ant-Man and the Wasp will have brought in a combined $1.1 billion in box office and likely $150+ million in domestic DVD/Blu-ray sales and rentals.

After the original film, this franchise’s characters enjoyed a higher profile after Paul Rudd appeared in the billion dollar hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the fact Evangeline Lilly got her character name in the sequel’s title. With both Ant-Man and Wasp certain to appear in the secret-titled Avengers 4 next summer, there should be another nice boost for a third Ant-Man/Wasp picture, especially if Marvel lets another MCU hero cross over and cameo — Spider-Man, for example, could provide a huge payoff that brings in additional theatrical viewers whose sensibilities actually align well with the Ant-Man/Wasp franchise too, for a longterm impact on turnout.

The great thing — well, one of the many great things — about this series is, it can substantially increase its box office with each new outing, without having to swell the budget in similar relative terms. Smaller incremental investments will pay off outsized dividends going forward, as the popularity keeps rising and the opportunities for crossover and higher profile within the MCU expand. It’s a franchise where Marvel can count on a steady, healthy growth without needing to make major corrections or changes to the approach or budgeting. And having started off with more modest budgets, there’s a lot of room for increased investment without even hitting the same territory of more costly franchises for quite a while.

I hope we see Hannah John-Kamen, Laurence Fishburne, and Michelle Pfeiffer return in full superhero/super-villain costumes, as there’s so much potential for a super-team (and super-villain team) that substantially raises the stakes for the whole series, not to mention even more eye-popping visual effects and stunts. And the possibility that a certain hero or set of heroes could wind up villainous (as I explained in a recent article you can read here, although I predicted it might happen in Ant-Man and the Wasp), resulting in strong emotional character arcs on top of everything the series has already established so far, is even more reason to root for this to happen.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is now the eighth MCU movie in a row to top $600+ million worldwide, and is director Peyton Reed’s highest-grossing picture to date. There are just a few weeks left before the film ends its run, so we’ll find out the exact final numbers relatively soon. But if you’ve not seen it in theaters yet, I highly recommend experiencing the Quantum Realm and the giant-sized action sequences on the best premium screen possible while you still can. There are a few moments that really benefit greatly from it, I assure you.

  21. ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Drops 72% In China As It Nears $700M Global
    **********

China is, I would argue, such a (normally) frontloaded moviegoing marketplace that I’d almost consider a 72.6% Friday-to-Friday drop to be “leggy.” Almost, but not quite. Nonetheless, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout earned another $7.67 million on its second Friday in China, compared with its $28m opening day last week. That pushes its eight-day total to $113.31m, meaning it will race past Rogue Nation ($136m) by the end of the weekend.

Oh, and while it hasn’t crossed $700 million worldwide already, it certainly will very soon. The $180m-budgeted Christopher McQuarrie-directed/penned action sequel has already earned $208.31m in 42 days of North American theatrical play. It should hop over the (unadjusted) domestic total of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ($209m in 2011) today.

And with a current overseas cume of $365 million not counting China, and another $113.31m in China alone, the film has now earned $478m overseas and $686m worldwide. The film should zoom past the $700m mark today or tomorrow. That will push it past the $694m global cume of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2011/2012 to become Tom Cruise’s biggest global grosser.

With around $212 million domestic by Sunday, it will soon pass the unadjusted domestic total of John Woo’s Mission: Impossible II ($215m in 2000) to become Cruise’s second-biggest domestic earner, behind only Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds ($235m in 2005). At a glance, we’re probably looking at a domestic total of $220 million-$225m, which will put it right around Logan, Justice League and Fate of the Furious.

It’s nowhere near the last two Fast and Furious movies overseas, especially with $380 million+ totals in China pumping those overseas cumes above the $1 billion mark. However, the Ethan Hunt sequel is holding its own against the last James Bond movie (Spectre with $881m in 2015) and certainly all of the Jason Bourne flicks. The current realm of grounded/real-world action heroics is entirely about James Bond, Ethan Hunt and Dom Toretto’s “family.”

We’ll see if Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson can hold their own when Hobbs and Shaw opens next August. Oh, and it’s about to be Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s biggest domestic grosser and global grosser since Transformers: Age of Extinction back in 2014. The only bad news is that it’s no longer going to be nominated for the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film” Oscar next January.

My question was to encourage one to keep an open mind about Kangana. Such accusations as per the news report can be propaganda (pro/anti depending on the source) and then comments against Kangana can be prejudiced, esp if one like one star to interfere but doesn’t have same views for others.

These propaganda based news are publicity stunt/defamatory and can also be an image building tactics. It converts to positivism very soon.

  27. On Manikarnika, it is indeed difficult to say whats really going on. The movie got delayed in post-production like 2.0. Shankar had moved on to his next (Indian 2) due to the delays. So has Akshay and Rajni. Will they be available for any reshoot at this stage? Similarry, Krish and Sonu Sood have also moved on. Whereas, Kangana and producers are too invested in the film to release it at its current state and are thus going for patchwork.

Kangana should be handling her PR more sensitively; but as Naveen said above, it might be her tactics to keep up a spunky feminist image in a perversely male dominated film industry.

Kangana has used ppl all her life to climb the film-career-ladder – having a live-in affair with Aditya Panscholi (double her age) was the starting point, then u had an Adhyayan Suman (his career went nowhere so she dumped him also), then came in HR (HR didnt work so she went all out to badmouth about him just before release of her film, which also didnt work despite all that publicity gimmick) – Aamir had dropped her from Ghajini (as she coudn’t keep the confientiality clause and blureted out about her role in front of media) – she was replaced by Jiah Khan…..well one would think that KR has learnt from these but nay! she still seems to believe in negative PR and already age is running out when all her colleagues like PC, DP, Anushka are either married or about to get…..KR hasn’t found anyone steady yeat and her haunting past will unlikely remain quiet…these all of-crouse as fed to us by media 🙂

  29. Exclusive: Sunny Deol And Rajkumar Santoshi Team Up For A Modern Day Action Thriller!
Sunny Deol recently tweeted that he would soon be announcing an action film.
By Himesh Mankad -September 8, 2018

Sunny Deol recently tweeted that he would soon be announcing an action film, and gave rise to several speculations in the trade. Now we have learnt that the superstar is teaming up with renowned director Rajkumar Santoshi on a modern-day action thriller. Unlike the films done by Sunny Deol off late, this one will be backed by a well known corporate and the pre-production for the film has already begun.

“The script and screenplay has been locked and it is a modern day action thriller. This story is extremely close to Rajkumar Santoshi’s heart and is one of his most ambitious projects till date. Santoshi narrated the script to Sunny Deol recently who absolutely loved it and instantly agreed to come on board,” said a source.

The source further added that the film will be shot from December to April and the makers will be targeting a late 2019 release.

“The pre-production has already begun, and the production team has gone on a recce to lock the locations. The film has lot of realistic action and the story unfolds in the thriller format. An official announcement would be made after an ensemble cast has been signed on for the film. Santoshi is planning to take the film on floors in December this year, however lot depends on Sunny Deol’s schedule as the actor is currently busy with the post production of his son, Karan Deol’s debut film, Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass,” concluded the source.

  32. Some random tweets are suggesting 2.0 release may get postponed to 23rd Nov.

Also, Advait Chandan (director of SS) is supposedly scripting the official remake of FG. May get to direct it if Aamir approves the script.

Both rumors may turn out to be horseshit.

    • So after ToH, there are 5 options for Aamir:
      —-
      – MB1 with Prabhas as co-star
      – SJ season 4
      – Mogul
      – Kiran’s next directorial
      – FG remake directed by Advait

Salute and Osho are shelved as per rumors.

Haven’t missed a film of his in the theater since (and including) Lagaan. Can’t say that about any other star. In all other cases (without exception) I haven’t even seen some or many of the films. Abhishek included (haven’t seen his last two). Anyway I’m not sure what to make of all the Aamir rumors so far. Will wait for proper confirmation.

      • I guess its going to be MB on one side vs. other 4 projects on the other side. If he shelves MB, he will have time to do all the rest of them in a similar timeframe.

But looks like its going to be difficult for outside production houses to sign him in future after ToH … all the above options are AKP productions!

        • The only missing link in the above rumors is wtf is the director for MB that Aamir is dreaming about? Is it Rajamouli as per closed door meetings recorded by ideaunique?

If so, Aamir will have enough time to do Mogul, Kiran’s next and Advait’s film before that can start … Rajamouli’s next is currently undergoing script changes and may not start production anytime soon. He is busy till 2020.

        2007 – TZP

        2014 – PK
        2016 – Dangal
        2018 – ?

The last 5 films in this list all have the distinction of being All Time Highest Grossers at their time of release (without adjusting for inflation). So ToH has the pressure of beating BB2 hindi numbers too, in order to fulfill every damn expectation out there.

    *********

The dazzling and unsurprising reinvention of Akshay Kumar

In the beginning of his career, Kumar was just another long-haired B-movie hero in the Arnie-Sly mould. How this Khiladi managed to turn from a gawky action star to Castro of the Priyadarshan-led comic revolution and Neeraj Pandey’s fast-paced espionage adventures and finally, the patriotic pop icon in the times of jingoism, Kumar’s consistency of staying power and subsequent reinvention is perhaps the most astonishing turnaround in the history of contemporary Hindi cinema. It’s astonishing, but not surprising.

    • Best of Akshay so far:

      ***********

      1. Sangharsh (1999)

An uncredited take on The Silence Of The Lambs, Sangharsh was the first film of the actor’s career where there was more vulnerability than vanity on display. Despite being pitied against a far more layered and textured character of Lajja Shankar Pandey (played by Ashutosh Rana), Professor Aman nevertheless commanded a lasting impression on the audience.

      2. Ajanabee (2001)

This Abbas-Mustan mystery may not have aged well, thanks to some squirmish sequences and a risible finale, but back in 2001, it somehow triumphed at the ticket windows. Dealing with a theme as bold as Wife Swapping, Kumar played a lecherous and conniving Vicky, and displayed a performance that oscillated between promiscuity and portentous. We may guffaw at the proceedings of the plot today, but it earned the actor his first Filmfare Award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role.

      3. Special 26 (2013)

Sourcing its inspiration from a real life heist that shook the Tribhuvandas Zaveri Bazaar, Neeraj Pandey’s solid crime drama saw Kumar as Ajay, a conman who impersonates as an Income Tax Officer and raids (in his case, loots) millions of rupees hidden at the strangest of places in Ministers and Businessmen’s houses. Often criticized for being loud and loutish in a majority of his inane and asinine comedies, this was perhaps the first time since Khakee (2004) where we saw Kumar’s restraint and stillness. Pandey shed all the trappings of the star and suffused him with a gentle quietness that made more noise than his screeching and deafening action potboilers and comedic outings.

      4. Baby (2015)

Collaborating with Neeraj Pandey for the second time, Kumar played a Covert Ops Specialist Ajay Singh Rajput with the commanding persona and Commercial Heroism that only he can seamlessly balance. This was also the genesis of his patriotic and flag-waving avatar. The physicality and power of the character aside, this action thriller was also about his calmness that could send a chill down your spine. (Remember the interrogation scene with Sushant Singh?). We can only envision what would have happened had this Silent Young Man would have transformed into an Angry Young Man!

      5. Airlift (2016)

Ranjit Katyal was two personalities rolled into one actor. When we first see him, meet him and get to know him, he’s an egotistical businessman who makes no bones about his selfishness. Iraq’s invasion on Kuwait makes him transform into an understanding human who wants to lend a helping hand. That charismatic salt-and-pepper look aside, this was a role that the actor performed with aplomb and pizzazz. Another addition to his Nationalistic repertoire, Airlift will always stand as one of the actor’s most rousing films, if not entirely remarkable.

    • Bollywood Superstar Akshay Kumar is soon going to become the first actor from his generation to deliver more than 50 successful films (Average/Plus and above). The actor, who made his Hindi film debut in 1991 has acted in around 114 films out of which 49 have proved to be successful ventures at the Box-Office. Given the magnitude of films done by the Khiladi of Bollywood the strike rate of 42.98 is quite good. The strike rate also suggests that every 2 out of 5 films done by Akshay Kumar proves to be a successful venture at the Box-Office.

    Positivies –
Awesome opening scene, probably the best i ever saw in a Sports movie. I was sold in the first half, it keeps the pace with many intriguing events interwoven very well. It seems like going Gadar way until songs spoil post interval. Last 30 mins movie shines again with some cinematic liberty.
Performances of all ensemble cast were very competitive though Akshay’s character has some comic element which i find unnecessary

    Negatives-
I wish two songs in post interval were chopped.
Weak second half until last 30 mins had some issues creating curiosity but every issue gets resolved within next scene instead of building up for sometime and resolving in more interesting manner.

    Overall- Solid 7.5/10

I had read in a review how can a team be allowed to play barefoot in olympic games. But, i googled on it, and Dhyan chand’s wiki page mentions this really happened in 1936 , not sure if 1948 aswell when few indian players played barefoot. Also, Dhyan chand’s biography also states this.
    Overall, it was very impactful.

    • I will try to watch it. He was MARVELLOUS in KAUN. To me, it remains one of his pinnacle of a performance. On par with that, would be his performance in PINJAR. What a performance that was in PINJAR!!! His transformation from a Hindu-hating fanatic Rashid to a person who repents, understands, regrets what his act his actions — goaded on by fellow fanatics — have done to Urmila’s character is NOTHING short of spectacular. During and after his attempts to unite her with her ‘Hindu’ kaum, when he sits in a corner waiting for her to board the bus to India, but hides his pain since by now, he’s actually started loving her, is heart-wringing to say the least. I have watched that performance and movie at least 5 times, and EVERYTIME he’s made me cry.

Simply one of the best movies ever put across on the screen from a book. And what fantastic usage of Gulzar’s HAATH CHUTHEY BHI TOH RISHTEY NAHIN TOOTA KARTE…

Saket – Bajpayee is a good actor but at the BO – his films have been failing since last 3-4 years – Aligarh, Traffic, Budhia Singh, Missing, Aiyaari…..actually GOW was in 2012 which cud be called his hit! but if u see his entire career graph – barring couple of initial hits, he has worked only in multi-starers – but that does not make him a bad actor. Only he is commercially not viable as a solo-hero.

      • One of the pleasures of watching Bajpai’s career as an actor is seeing how he steals scenes and moments from lesser performers, without seeming to do much, revealing the INauthenticity of his “opposite”: we saw this in Veer Zaara, where, once Bajpai shows up, SRK’s character seems no more than callow; we see this in Rajneeti, where Bajpai is over the top and thoroughly enjoying himself (he knows it’s a mediocre film and he’s having FUN!), at the expense of the rest of this turkey-fest, and of a cast that seems to think they’ve got some Serious Take on Indian Politics. He is a little harder to appreciate and enjoy ON HIS OWN (I think we the audience almost need the foil), which is why Satya is perhaps the paradigmatic role, but he’s one of the best in the industry at the moment. That he doesn’t get more roles speaks volumes about the cesspool Bollywood is in.

          >>>>>>>>>

You have yourself answer this. Yes, he has fun at the expense of others and the “others” too seem to realize that which he why the fewer roles. He has previously carried that persona offscreen as well that makes it more obvious.

Manoj Bajpayee, Kaykay Menon, Irfan Khan, Nawazuddin, and few others whom I can’t remember right now, the quality mentioned above is what separates them IMO. Some had the superiority complex as an actor and held grudges on lesser talented but more successful actors/stars. The less bitter one’s get more opportunity than others. It is as simple as that.

He certainly is much better actor than all the Khans together & better than Irrfan, Nawazuddin & Rajkumar as well!! Watch him in Aks against AB where he is as good as AB if not better. My favorite performance of his is in Shool where he is vulnerable yet stubborn in his fight against corrupt political leader Bachchu Yadav and not flinching despite losing his daughter & wife in the dual. His denouement speech sends shivers down my spine in each viewing even after so many years, a very emotional yet real! He is just stupendous in GOW, Satya, Aligarh besides Shool & Pinjar. He is in the league of Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah as far as pure acting is concerned & a legend.

        • that’s true but I also agree with your earlier longer comment on him. I’d also make this point. Often people given ‘alternative’ actors too much benefit of the doubt. One can be a good or very good actor overall and keep doing credible films (which is to say a lot of non-commercial stuff) but this doesn’t mean one is good everywhere in the same way. The idea that Nawazuddin Siddiqui (for example) is good at everything he touches is not a view I subscribe to, nor so with Bajpayee. Yes, that sort of actor will always do things minimally well but that is different from thinking every performance is ‘mind-blowing’. In contemporary India we also tend to latch to these alternative cinema ‘flavors’, the way people normally do with commercial stars. An alternative actor becomes successful, starts appearing in more mainstream films as well (good for him or her), but people just refuse to judge him (or her) on the merits. Bajpayee was that way once, there was Irrfan, now there’s Nawazuddin as well. Again it’s not about the abilities of any of these actors (though at their respective bests I like Bajpayee the most) but the kind of suspension of the critical when it comes to evaluating their work. The same of course happens with a number of directors and certain kinds of films as well.

        • Bajpai has been far more successful in commercial films compared to other ‘alternative’ actors. He’s the complete package in more ways than one. Just look at Special 26, Raajneeti or Tevar for instance.

I do agree that actors like Nawazuddin & Irrfan are a bit limited in terms of range but there is no such issue with Bajpai. He’s up there with the best actors we’ve ever had.

There is literally nothing he can’t do. Except for changing the audience’s perception/taste.

I do agree, however, that he wasn’t better than Bachchan in Aks. Partly because he didn’t have the same scope as Bachchan.

I’m one of the biggest Bachchan fans out there but that doesn’t mean I can’t recognise Bajpai’s titanic talent.

        • As an example, Naseer’s a great actor but his villainous turns in commercial films have been mostly caricatures. Think Chahat, Mohra etc.

He was completely atrocious in films like Tehelka. I don’t blame him for cashing in on his image, and it doesn’t diminish his great work in parallel cinema, but it needs to be called out.

Bajpai, meanwhile, brings a more sympathetic angle to his villainous turns. In Raajneeti, for instance, he makes one actually root for him.

In Aks, he’s played his role like Batman’s Joker. Maybe that was his brief, but it seems a bit of an oversimplification. That’s not to say he was bad, but if I look back, it could have been better.

        • Naseer was great in Bezubaan! Of course that wasn’t a larger than life villain role. I do agree with you on him overall. Bajpayee definitely has more élan for this sort of thing and Rajneeti is indeed a good example. I still find him inadequate in Aks leaving aside the comparison with Bachchan. I don’t really disagree with you on Bajpayee except that Aks for me is symptomatic in a way. This also connects with your Naseer point. Serious actors who are not commercial stars often find it hard to operate on terrain where they are meant to act like stars. In other words not just play villains but villains in a certain outlandish way. They often work best in commercial films when they’re foils to the star or whatever. A classic example is Om Puri in Ghayal. Puri though was very much the anti-Naseer in this sense. He was always comfortable in a commercial film but again he worked chiefly as a foil. He knew how to dial it down whereas Naseer even in Mohra (where he’s otherwise ok) feels a bit too intense for that part. I certainly agree with some of the examples you or Qalandar have quoted. But whether I find him equally ‘effective’ everywhere is questionable. Which is again different from debating whether he’s ‘good’ everywhere. I think all the actors I mentioned are generally ‘good’. In a sense Irrfan and Nawaz have become alternative actor-stars. People expect a certain signature from them. Bajpayee was never able to get that far. Maybe he was a bit too early in this sense when the industry didn’t really have too many parts for people like him. My favorite performances of his though are Satya above all else (don’t think anything else gets close to this) and then at that commercial end of the spectrum Rajneeti. He’s done memorable stuff elsewhere too but not quite stupendous to my mind.

        • I disagree with the Nawaz and Irrfan comparisons. Bajpai’s got Satya, Kaun, Shool, Road, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Pinjar, 1971, Chittagong, Gangs Of Wasseypur, Aligarh and Rukh as examples of lead roles. That’s pretty much an outstanding list of great performances. Gali Gulieyan, by all indications, is another great addition to that list.

I loved Nawaz in Raman Raghav 2.0 but he’s not in anyway better than Bajpai’s psychotic turns in Kaun or Road. In fact, Nawaz’s performance is quite derivative in nature — he borrows from his own previous performances. The same goes for him in Sacred Games as well. Incidentally, Nawaz cites Bajpai in Aks as the inspiration behind his performance in Kick.

Even otherwise, if we look at Bajpai’s supporting roles, we have, Tamanna, Zubeidaa, Aks, Veer Zaara, Raajneeti, Special 26, Tevar, Budhia Singh, Aiyaary to his credit. He’s not just good as a foil, he’s just good (excellent), period.

To conclude, I’ll borrow a simile from the music world. A singer who’s classically trained can easily sing a commercial song, but the reverse is seldom true. Bajpai is that classically trained, immaculately prepared, singer.

It’s a Hollywood style thriller where the trained recruit goes rogue. A pretty standard fare even by Hollywood standards. But Bajpai is still pretty good as the guy who trains the recruit and is tasked with hunting him down.

Maqbool is another favourite of mine which boasts of outstanding performances from its lead pair to supporting actors, be it Tabu, Irfan or troika of Pankaj Kapoor, Naseer & Om Puri. I consider it to be one of the best adaptations of shakespeare’s oeuvre. It cast a ‘spell’ on me through its watertight screenplay & terrific performances; Tabu hallucinating blood all over the place & then trying to erase those marks & Irrfan first trying to convince her that there was nothing as it was her delusion & then coming to terms with her madness is a scene of cinematic pinnacle & gives me goosebumps in every watch even today!!

Manoj Bajpayee debuted as a gangster and that image made him get similar roles. And then he branched out spectacularly. The more the likes of them, the merrier. Cinema will benefit.

In the nineties, action meant Akshay – period. He started this current fad of ‘stars doing their own stunts’. In Akshay’s heyday as an action hero, there was no stuntsman in the industry who could pull off his stunts! These days only guyz like Tiger and Vidyut enjoy such status in the industry.

His only blockbuster to this day is Mohra, which was an action entertainer. He is lucky to be part of such a big-budget action extravaganza in his fifties, which can be another rare blockbuster in his long career. In short, he should be doing more of this stuff! Even Baby 2 is much more welcome than HP3 or HF3 or whatnot.

        • Welcome was a record opener and did enough in the end to perhaps be called a legitimate blockbuster. Rowdy Rathore was just another hit ot superhit – what have you.

But I will say this. The all-versions india nett total for both 2.0 and ToH can be as high as 500 cr each if they click well with the audience. Endhiran in 2010 made roughly 150 cr nett in tamil version, 50 cr nett in telegu version and 20 cr nett in hindi version. Today the business from tamil and telegu versions combined can be as high as 300 cr nett. With Akshay in it, the hindi version can do anywhere between 100-200 cr. So an all-india cume of 400-500 cr would be a reasonable target for 2.0, considering everything. No one is expecting BB2 scale of business anyways.

Similarly, ToH with all its dubbed versions will be hoping to do 400-500 cr given that Aamir’s last release did 387 cr cume 2 years back.

So the BO war between these two is on.

When I dreamt of being an actor, I dreamt of being a film star like everybody else. But also, I have to admit that now I am enjoying theatre more than I enjoy working in movies. I am also pretty dissatisfied with the quality of the movies we make by and large. I am getting interesting offers, but they are few and far between, which is fine with me because then I can give that time to theatre. When my bank balance runs low then I sign a big Bollywood monstrous movie and I make sure that I am safe for the next few years,” he chuckles.

His relationship with films began rather innocently – despite his father being rather strict, watching movies was an indulgence that was allowed. Ever since the age of three, he grew up watching English films starring the likes of Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Spencer Tracy. That he went to a school—St Joseph’s College, Nainital that screened English films every week, only helped.

Among Indian actors, although Dara Singh and Shammi Kapoor films were undisputed favourites, it was Dilip Kumar who impressed Shah the most with his craft.

“I have to admit that nobody who has been in the Hindi movies cannot have been a fan of Dilip Kumar because he was distinct from the rest. Dilip Kumar realised the importance of economy of movement, economy of expression, economy of speech and he had wonderful diction. He had an emotional truth that set him apart from the rest. The others were entertainers in their own right but they didn’t have that quality,” he says of the veteran actor.

His own inspiration to turn actor, however, came from watching Spencer Tracy in The Old Man and the Sea, which helped him understand that actors need not look like the Gods. “I did not understand the distinction between an actor and being a film-star until I saw Spencer Tracy who was both. So it was all about trying to be both if I could.”

When he performed on stage at the age of 14, he felt so stimulated and alive that he became certain that this was something he would like to do.

He explains that he was drawn to it because “I really wanted to express myself because I was an introvert child. I had few friends. I didn’t get on well with my parents. I was always doing wrong things according to them.”

        • The problem arises when fans want to make Manoj Bajpayee a commercial star and start comparing him with commercial stars which is unfair to both Manoj B and the commercial stars. If he was cast in a film like TZH, it would have earned 60 crores at the most or even less. So holding grudges against commercial stars will not benefit because they operate in a different world and for a different audience. A commercial star can act in parallel cinema and get appreciation and awards. But an arthouse product cant do the same and get a 300 crore plus.

At the same time the answer to every debate on very actor cannot be: how many hits does he have?! Irrespective of one’s intentions every debate shouldn’t be translated into box office terms. No industry can do without stars. But equally the richest period in any industry also has lots of good actors at every end of the spectrum. This is another reason the 70s was so extraordinary. The supporting actors, the alternative actors, even the bit players, everyone was important. Leone famously spent far more time casting for his bit players than his lead stars! To be fair to actors like Bajpayi who can clearly carry off films like Satya there aren’t too many directors who make such films. Obviously he can’t be expected to compete with SRK and Salman on their terrain!

They have much to lose and their market is also affected to some extent. They always have to be on their toes. Talent lasts forever but bo success is unpredictable. JA was lead in SMJ when MB played a support role – film did 70+ cr – credit went to JA. So eventually, he will have to do such films only to survive. Even Irfaan and Nawaaz are in the same boat (all their last solo-hero films have bombed). BO is a difficult game where even mighty SRK and Sallu are finding it tough now….akki and AD are in their bracket zone of 80 to 150 cr – Ranveer/Ranbir are the new superstars in the making where their film can do 150 to 300 cr.

Orson Welles, who made Citizen Kane, which for more than 5 decades was considered the greatest film ever made, could not find funds to make the films he wanted. Citizen Kane was a commercial disaster as well.

Back home, Guru Dutt’s Kaagaz Ke Phool was a massive flop that sent him into depression. Today it’s considered a classic. And rightly so!

Hitchcock’s Vertigo is another example. Blade Runner, Shawshank Redemption, Brazil, Fight Club, Mera Naam Joker, Silsila, Agneepath, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Dil Se were all flops.

If commercial success is the only criteria then everyone should just watch Salman Khan movies, day in, day out. That ought to cure any artistic tendencies that lie hidden in one’s psyche for good.

  54. Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Races Past $700 Million Worldwide

Mission: Impossible – Fallout has earned over $700 million at the worldwide box office, including $212m in North America alone. That makes the Paramount/Viacom Inc. release their biggest movie since Transformers: Age of Extinction ($245m domestic/$1.1 billion worldwide) in June of 2014. It also puts the flick over the $694m cume (in 2011/2012) of Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol to become Tom Cruise’s biggest global earner of all time.

In terms of domestic bucks, the film’s current $212 million gross is just over Ghost Protocol ($209m in 2011/2012) and just because Mission: Impossible II ($215m in 2000) and War of the Worlds ($235m in 2005). None of that accounts for inflation. And in terms of overseas muscle, this Christopher McQuarrie-directed sequel is the first Mission: Impossible adventure to play in 3D in certain territories around the world.

In terms of inflation, at least domestically, it still sits below Rogue Nation ($195 million in 2015/$219m adjusted), Ghost Protocol ($209m in 2011/$246m adjusted), Mission: Impossible II ($215m in 2000/$370m adjusted) and Mission: Impossible ($181m in 1996/$380m adjusted). Yes, a lot more people went to the movies in the mid-1990’s and early-2000’s than they did today, but you already knew that. Nonetheless, the $180m-budgeted flick has earned a solid 3.44x weekend-to-final multiplier with arguably around $10-$15m still left in the can.

The film continues to play well in China. It fell a large-but-expected in 57% its second weekend in China, earning $32.4m for a new $137.7m Chinese total. That puts it above the $136m total of Rogue Nation and puts its likely finishing point at around $170m.

That’ll be, give-or-take where it ends up (and exchange rates), in the same group as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($172 million), xXx: Return of Xander Cage ($164m), Kong: Skull Island ($168M) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($159m).With a $77m debut weekend, the film should pull in a multiplier of around 2.2x in China, which is pretty decent for a Hollywood import. At a glance, with a current worldwide cume of $726.6m, we may be looking at a global cume just over/under the $788m cume (in 2013 and sans 3D) of Fast and Furious 6.

Either way, Tom Cruise is over the $10 billion mark and will be nipping at Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow-inflated heels. Of course, with four more Fantastic Beasts movies, Depp is about to break away. Maybe Cruise can find a way to sneak into the next phase of the MCU or whatever DC Films is plotting after Wonder Woman 1984.

Aamir Khan & Kunal Kohli to collaborate?

Kunal Kohli, who directed ‘Fanaa’ (2006) is apparently all set to join hands with Aamir Khan again after 12 years.

News has it that the filmmaker could be seen directing film which will be produced by the Aamir Khan Films banner. This is something interesting as it isn’t apparent yet whether Khan will be seen on screen in the venture but discussions have been ongoing for some time.

Kohli is currently busy with his film based on the Ramayan but he’s said to be free to start that film after completing this.

With a bit of luck, he may take up all three projects in 2019 if everything falls in place?

        • What is the guarantee that Aamir will be a part of Kiran’s film ? She seems like the sort of person who wants her film to be starless affair. Aamir got himself into Dhobi Ghat by sort of fooling her — since she could not find her Arun, he told her let me act out a couple of scenes, to make the role come alive…and finally she took him. He has also said, that in retrospect, maybe he stuck out like a sore thumb, that the others were better. I don’t think so. He did his role well enough,IMO.

I used to disagree with Satyam when he used to say that films of Aamir are only relatively better but look like classics because of the extreme poor quality of film-making prevalent in the Hindi film industry. STREE proves it. Not finding time but will try to expand more on this supposedly ‘smart’, and ‘intelligent’ and ‘witty’ horror-comedy. Gawd!!!

Go watch KANCHALAPAREM and then compare what a movie with limited budget but a sharp mind ACTUALLY means..

But overall its good for cinema if paying audience shows up for small films. Else more power goes to the ilk of salmans and srks.

Reason why Stree’s success is making certain people happy is doing all that on its own merits than any star or big producer marketing or backing it up.

What I look for is a unique experience – something which does not have the been there done there feeling.

Stree ticks most of the boxes and I suspect that is why it is doing well. Agree with your view however that the praise is overdone but then it is much more acceptable then say a Sultan getting
all the praise. The smaller and the honest film deserves the chance

I just don’t remember the context. the comment as it stands isolated is not one I can agree with. and I’m generally careful enough and comprehensive enough (!) not to leave people with misleading impressions. Incidentally not questioning An Jo’s intentions here. I just don’t have the original comment to refer to (might be somewhere on the blog but hard to track down without the right keywords) and the formulation is misleading.

Just trying to be clear because it can come off as misleading if one doesn’t know everything else I’ve said in this regard (Aamir Khan). To summarize briefly I wouldn’t say ‘Aamir’s films are good only because everything else is mediocre’ but that the good can seem like a masterpiece surrounded by junk. But more specifically I do consider some of Aamir’s films good in this period, not only by contemporary standards. These would be good in a historic sense as well. Others might be decent using historic standards but still good relative to everything else today.

I had first heard Hemantda in 1944.After hearing that song, I became a great fan of his.

Unfortunately, we did not have tape recorders and CDs in those days. We only had the radio. And Hemantda used to sing on Bengal Radio.

Aanchal Se Kyon Baandh Liya Mujh Pardesi Ka Pyaar is one of my favourite songs.

After I got married, I kept my son’s name Hemant because I loved Hemantda’s voice so much.

Later, I also worked with him and the greatness of his voice is that after hearing his songs don’t feel like hearing other songs.

His voice was like a deep ocean.

Interestingly, his Hindi too was not very good because he was also a Bengali like Manna Dey.

I am one of the greatest fans of Hemant Kumar.

His songs Yeh Nayan Dare Dare, Pukar Lo from Khamoshi are wonderful. No one has that kind of cultured voice.

Loved Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey (he is truly underrated), Hemant Kumar and Talat Mahmood as well. In those days, the music used to take a backseat to the singers, or at least gave equal footing to the quality of singing. Unlike today, where music usually dominates.

Not suggesting that we have poor singers today but they work under a different paradigm compared to the Golden age.

Of course, SD Burman is probably my favourite music director of all time.

        • Agree on SD. But was just looking at Hemant Kumar’s list of movies as composer and was really surprised at the lack of recognition for him. His score for Saheb, Biwi aur Ghulam is first rate. His scores are also unique for each film and hence one may find it hard to identify a signature Hemant Kumar song( I used to do it quite a bit- identify the music composer based on the song)

In addition to the Lata song above, the Asha qawalli from SBG is unparalled-‘Saqiya aaj mujhe’ – far superior to the Roshan qawali from Dil hi to hai

  69. Since there have been two many comments I’ll respond to the Bajpayi box office thing once again here:

Sanjana, I think Idea introduced the whole box office point with respect to Bajpayi. As he does in pretty much every other situation. To say that commercial films or even smaller films are about recovering their investments is something so absurdly obvious it scarcely needs to be repeated. I made this point a few days ago in some other context, about cinema being an expensive medium even at the lower end of the production spectrum. My debate on Bajpayi was purely restricted to a) my own sense of where he stands as an actor b) the degree to which the somewhat alternative actor can function in commercial cinema. This latter point is crucial. Because I wasn’t hinting in any way at obvious box office realities but at the ‘signification’ system of commercial cinema. Much as Saket also meant the same (I take it) when he said that Bajpayi cannot head a commercial film because of the way films are structured in his industry. And so I’m not sure why the box office debate had to be introduced at all. Yes it’s always a struggle for people like Bajpai to get good parts, let alone head films. But there’s a difference between the commercial star failing and someone like Bajpai failing. Because the latter never gets his fair shot at it. And here I must say that terms like ‘paying public’ have really never meant anything to me. These are pseudo-populist terms meant to defend all kinds of positions. In any case I don’t hold ‘the audience’ in high esteem just because it has this power over a film. The ‘audience’ sometimes supports some very good films and sometimes utter garbage. Of course the audience is not always the same from film to film but either way there is no real correlation between a worthwhile film and one that the audience accepts.

Finally there’s another very important point connected to all of this. I’m going to repeat myself again. Any movie industry is not only the list of its successes but also the list of its ‘intended’ failures. No one makes a film to fail but there are many directors at every point in time who do things (given the opportunity) where they’re not only looking at the box office. They follow their instincts and ambitions as far as the film is concerned and then they hope the audience will meet them somewhere along the way. In many cases they keep making such films even when they know for a fact that there will not be an audience for them. Soderbergh said he had enough clout at one point to be able to make Che as he wanted to (the roadshow version is of course two feature length films), he knew no one would make any money on it but because of his reputation the studios extended him this leash. He felt they wouldn’t do it again, that this was a one-off, but knowing this he basically spent his capital on such a project (a film which I like a lot incidentally). There are always such people. A list of ‘greatest’ films, will always include a number of box office flops (initially) as well as some that were also critically panned. Many were booed by audiences (Godard’s Contempt for example). These things happen. Filmmaking is also an art form (for those who approach it this way) not just a commercial medium. Yes if you’re Rohit Shetty and you make a failure there’s probably nothing to redeem from it because his films are only meant to be mass entertainers. But with everything else there is grey area. Even if one doesn’t believe this one should accept the fact that very many people work this way in any industry at every point in time. In other words there is no history of cinema which does not also include the history of its failures. Again in the same somewhat ‘intended’ sense. There is no idealism here. This is reality.

    • Yes, Idea is worried about recovery. But films are more than that. Let us savour the films instead of worrying whether they make money or not. In case of bad films it is good that they face the music. In case of good films they remain to be good films for the longest period. And I also explained my views about the other side. The burden of delivering hit films takes its own toll on big stars. In case of actors like MB no one expects their films to do blockbuster business and that makes them free to enjoy their work while getting critical acclaim.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Commercial cinema is more about economics, but that does not hold so true when it comes to parallel cinema. Its not just the stars, the economic pressure is shared by everyone involved in commercial films – directors, producers and the crew. How can someone think of measuring MB by such measures???

        Like

        • that’s a misperception. The investment in a smaller or parallel film is only a fraction of a larger film. But that doesn’t make the financing easier. Most alternative film directors struggle to get any sort of financing for their films. It’s not as easy as it seems. That smaller investment still has to be recovered and without stars it’s hard to convince anyone to watch such a film in the theater. Most of these films are not big on TV either so they can’t recover their investments this way either. Actually these days Netflix or Amazon and so on have made certain things more viable at this level. Kashyap joked in one of the Manmarziyan interviews that he’s a mass director for the online audience. But that’s zero revenue for the most part or at least up until now when some of these films have been picked up by paid streaming services. In India it’s still about downloads on one site or the other. He said his films otherwise never lasted in the theaters beyond a week or so. Yes the risks are greater with major productions, that’s obvious, but alternative cinema or whatever is hardly pressure-free filmmaking! If that were the case lots of very talented people would be making films once a year and not worrying about the result.

          Liked by 2 people

        • Pressure for recovery and also to find investors is always there – be it parallel or commercial cinema. BUT the expectations of ROI for parallel cinema is much more reasonable than in case of commercial cinema. And there are potentially more angel investors for small films because of scale than a few studios who can afford to float a 200 cr production budget.

How much does an actor like MB get? How much do stars get? The gun on your head is always proportional to your position and salary in any industry.

          Like

      • I don’t think even actors at that level are free of pressure. Even the smaller films have to do something. It’s not like Bajpai has been appearing regularly in small films with lead parts. Also a smaller actor is more expendable. Stars live more in the public memory even with failures. Much harder for an actor who’s not a proper star. Now it’s a different matter that the ‘Hollywoodization’ of cinema makes even most major stars expendable.

ha ha boss – we are discussing this whole thing in BO thread! :-))))

Well, i beg to differ here on many points. MB is a good actor / great actor / extraordinary actor – and all of that. Agreed. No arguments. MB is not liked by masses, not a commercial star, not a BO-draw – and all of that. You have to see the nos. to agree or disagree on that. That is what I am doing. I am not making any statement.

If an Aamir or Bachchan gives massive BO hits – that does not take away anything from their being great actors. They are great actors and BO-Superstars. Something MB is not giving us.

Where is the conflict here? :-))) even the horse himself says that “I have made my career out of flop films” read here – https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/naam-shabana-ive-made-a-career-out-of-flop-films-manoj-bajpayee-4599216/

fine it does not affect him or maybe to many of you here. But i dont believe that it does not affect the producers or film exhibitors and all. Sanjana – agreed, producers may not be worried about BO failures. What about theater owners and other people in the loop whose entire living is dependent on BO nos?

And if BO does not matter, why make films? do theater. I do not know any producer who will say “Chalo ek picture banate he, and it is ok if it fails at the BO” These are diplomatic statements they may make in the press conferences, but at the end of the day – greenback is required and everyone loves it.

      • I’ll step in – a lot of what you are saying makes economic sense but cinema is an art medium. The question you must ask yourself is how does MB still get these roles? He must have some value and it might not be economical reasons he’s in these films. His salary might be low & in essence a star in the same role brings a bunch of baggage and different expectations altogether. Not sure why only MB is singled out.

        Cinema can be economically experimental.

        • Jay that is a valid question and even I want to know the answer. He is not being singled out here. It is just that he is the topic. In fact, I have also mentioned Irfaan and Nawaz (their most of the films in last 3-4 years have bombed too). Now only thing I can assume is the “hope” factor of small-time producers wanting to make a low-budget but hard-hitting film (Hope is the reason where close to 1000 films get made in our film industry every year but hardly 10-15 succeed) – if there is any other reason – i want to know as much as any one else. And again, I am not saying that any of those films MB did were bad or he acted poorly. I am not doing that.

          Like

        • You are answering the question yourself when pointing out that only 10-15 movies succeed every year!! So called heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor had disastrous Bombay Velvet, Roy, Besharm before Sanju which must have caused a loss to financiers & chain in excess of 120-150 Crores from these duds!! Manoj Bajpayee would have made 15 Pinjars, Gulli Gulliyans & the alike in this budget!! So your theory of making actors like Bajpayee, Nawaz, Irrfan accountable for failures at the box office itself is questionable when you are very well aware of the fact that only 5% to 10% at the very max movies succeed in a year & that involve all the bigwigs of the industry!!

Salman must have caused loss of hundreds of Crores in the period between 2003-09 where except MSK & Partner, all his films were either flops or disasters!! His so called foray in to Hollywood through Marigold had the distinction of not even grossing a Crore!! Yuvraaj, Mr. and Mrs. Khanna and numerous of his other releases were disasters at the box office during that period!! Who paid for the losses then despite delivering continuous turkeys one after the other and that too were huge losses!! Tubelight and Race 3 have also incurred huge losses at different spectrums of the chain from the distributors to the exhibitors and at some other levels as well. Shahrukh’s last releases have also lost a huge chunk of investment from disastrous JHMS to Raees to Fan to Dil Wale to Ra-1!! So let’s not fool ourselves by singling out actors of the calibre of Manoj Bajpayees, Irrfans, Nawazuddins through the prism of box office returns alone as they bring a lot to the films they act in with their impeccable craft, commitment and utmost dedication, which results in such fine films and performances to savour for life, not just once!!

Cinema is primarily an art form & artistic skills ought to be at the forefront while praising or criticising any work of art and other facets such as economics and finance should always come afterwards. As an audience, we hope to watch an entertaining, engrossing and engaging movie in the theatre, not watch it for how much it’s going to make!! Even if it makes 300, 400, 500 & more but leaves you cold after the viewing, what difference it does make whether it ends up minting 5 or 500 as you didn’t like the movie!! So many movies which we love & keep watching many times were disasters and flops when they released yet we keep returning to them oblivious of their box office fate or even being aware of it doesn’t diminish our love and liking for these movies, rather it perplexes us why they bombed despite being such fine films!!

          Liked by 2 people

      • The box office thread is not just for the box office but also for discussions that are not related to specific threads or where people can’t find the specific threads.

On the rest you keep stating the obvious without addressing my objections. Put differently a lot of motivations for human actions are not economic or not purely economic. Cinema is no different. You keep repeating things that no one is even debating. Or they are so absurdly obvious it seems silly to try! My only point is: as elsewhere in life there are lots of decisions taken that are not driven only by economic rationality. Otherwise you couldn’t explain how half the movies that were ever made! Or how some actors with failure (stars or otherwise) survive better than many who don’t in similar situations. Why would anyone produce a movie like Lagaan? A 3 hr 40 min film about cricket set in British India? Aamir didn’t have the standing then that he has had since. Who thought this was a great idea? Who thought it’s a great idea to give Bhansali so much money for opulent period pieces when he’s so hit and miss otherwise? Who gives Gowariker money for anything when without Aamir he doesn’t have remotely the same results anywhere (even JA more or less matched TZP, at its budget it was quite a problem for UTV, even if trending was decent enough)? I could go on and on. What Kashyap films have ever made money? Maybe GoW. Who keeps giving him chances? Even the smaller stuff really does nothing. Vishal Bhardwaj has never had a proper success as far as I can tell. Let’s take it further. Now if producers keep investing on such projects and many others they are either hopeless optimists, hopeless idiots, or both! I suspect the answer lies elsewhere in most cases..

In any case there are always directors who depend on people being either visionaries or hopeless optimists, idiots, whatever. Not because they want to fail but that they don’t want to succeed doing business as usual. Cinematic history often depends on such people. People remember the best of Guru Dutt today much more than they remember very many successful films that released at the same time. But this happens with very commercial releases as well. As for going to theater (plays), actually that costs money too if not as much as cinema. As for theater owners and so on well if I get into such a business I ought to know the risk of the profession. I should surely know what kinds of films are being made, what kind of audience there is on most days and so on.

The box office ‘does’ matter (not that anyone said it doesn’t!) but for many people failure is not enough of an impediment to keep doing stuff they want to (even if they have to compromise from time to time). Bringing it all back to bajpai again he too probably wants more box office success. But that debate wasn’t about that. If one is just discussing an actor’s merits or demerits a valid response cannot be ‘how many crores do his films make?’. there is simply no logical connection between the two. We’re not debating Bajpai as ‘star’, only as ‘actor’.

A 3 hr 40 min film about cricket set in British India? Aamir didn’t have the standing then that he has had since. Who thought this was a great idea?” Jamu Sugandh financed the whole thing. Aamir didn’t. And aamir, even now, in every interview says – repeats it – that he makes sure that his film does not make any one loose money. And yet he does not compromise on artistic side.

Cinema is definitely a medium of art and one can not make it predicting a certain BO no. – fine. But it is not me who is repetitive – it is you 🙂 I am not trying to run down MB or his choice of films. I am saying that his films are no more a bo draw and I stand by that purely on the results 🙂 And if it were theater – I would still little lenient if there is no inflow of money but cinema is an expensive medium and whatever creativity u crave for – it is purely a commercial medium. Amol Gupte with an aamir delivers TZP worth 80-90 cr or whatever u have but without him, stanely ka dubba and all that goes nowhere! artistic satisfaction done. hell yeah! where is the money then?

Bhansali, again had Bharat Shah financing – he did not spend anything. And same SLB when Saawariya bombed resorted to a Rowry Rathore to get a quick 100 cr so that he could make a Guzaarish again! only to swtich back to BB and GKR kind of masala!

          I rest my case here.

        • You keep naming financiers. Don’t think I said Aamir put his own money into Lagaan. Nor bhansali. The question is: why did those financiers?

On the rest it’s symptomatic that you’re simply unable to think outside a certain box office logic. I’ll try this one last time and then give up. I’m pretty sure you couldn’t find a comment in this entire debate where anyone says Bajpai is a box office draw. So not sure why you keep bringing up this straw man? Similarly on the rest, not sure who keeps producing all that non-Aamir stuff that doesn’t make money! If it’s only about money why is there so much investment on films that anyone could say on day 1 would be losing propositions? I didn’t expect Aligarh to be a hit. Did you? Did anyone? Who put up money for this then? And tons of other films like it? everything else you’re saying is beside the point. I know how Aamir works. I just don’t know how so many other films get to production when everyone knows they won’t work. You don’t need to argue with me about this since I’m not the guy producing these films. Nor are they producing such films just to get good reviews. Presumably no one likes going bankrupt for critical acclaim? And most of these films don’t quite get critical acclaim either, not in the true sense. You need to ask yourself: if it’s only about making money how are these other films possible? and I’m not referring here to very commercial films that fail. Why am I insisting on this? Because as long as cinema follows such a model there will be actors like Bajpai who can survive even without becoming commercially viable. And that’s good!

Anyway this is my final attempt on all this. Since you’re not answering the obvious and going down these rabbit-holes (Aamir didn’t produce Lagaan, Jhamu sugand did! Yeah whatever..!) I can’t add much more. I think I’ve been completely clear.

Its a shock treatment for most fans of Salman and Akshay and southern masala (read Rajamouli) that not everything that works big in India is even acceptable by global standards. They guyz need to come out of their cocoon. RGV’s tweet (although quite crude) says the bitter reality about indian massy entertainment formula.

If the theatre owners are ready to exhibit those small films, they definitely are not doing charity. No one can force them. They take the risk for one week. Sometimes they get good money during that period. In the absence of any other film, they can exhibit the fresh small film instead of exhibitng a film which ran out of steam. They wait for that one big film and meanwhile make the best of what they get. And multiplex audience show up for these small films if the review is good or if they like the actor starring in it. Something is better than nothing. Big films also fail.

    • If minimum number of people dont come they cancel the shows thus saving electricity. And they allot minimum screens for such films. And small films come in groups. So one theatre can run 3 small films easily. And the leftover big film also gets one or two screens. They manage. They dont complain because they know they cant get lottery weekly.

      • And let’s check your own perception based impenetrable & impregnable Aamir Khan’s record!! His 1947-Earth was a disaster in 1999 despite getting critical acclaim & AAA another dud in 1994 which is considered to be a cult classic!! Raakh was a washout and Dhobi Ghat just made 15 Crores and Secret Superstar despite his cameo made 62 Crores!! As per your logic, if TZP made 60+ Crores in 2007, then going by that standard, DB & SS ought to be making at the very least in excess of 100 Crores yet they didn’t!! Why?? Because not all movies of even the superstars make the same mullah, if it were so, Abhiman, Mili, Chupke Chupke would have been as big as Sholay, MKS, AAA and many other Amitabh Bachchan’s monstrous hits despite his box office standing being the same during their release!!

Aamir keeps on mentioning about how he loves Pyasa, MEA, Mother India, yet he doesn’t know how much money they made when released and neither is he concerned one bit about whether they were hits or flops!! So if you love Manoj Bajpayee in Pinjar, Aks and many more films and he was able to touch you on a personal level, then what difference does these films box office earning make to your decision in any which way!! I’d not stretch it any further as it’s futile trying to make sense of the obvious when one is feigning ignorance!!

        • Why bring in this sort of class talk here. Unnecessary.

Manoj Bajpai is a brilliant actor who does not have star appeal. We remember his roles even if we forget his films. Aamir is a decent actor who can be effective enough; has good star appeal. But what I like best about Aamir’s films is the manner in which he weaves his own performance into his films, seamlessly, no threads showing. I love Talaash in toto, even though I felt that Aamir’s performance seemed less lively compared to the hilarious and human and touching Nawaazuddin character. But in Secret Superstar, Aamir helped lighten the mood of a dark film. Aamir does what he has to do and is no less than any pure actor.

          Liked by 2 people

        • It was relative to the discussion going on. I consider Pankaj Kapoor to be a better actor than Amitabh Bachchan which doesn’t diminish the greatness of Amitabh the star-actor the best we ever have. So it’s not about one-upmanship but more to do with terrain they operate in which is too dissimilar for any fair comparison.

It’s like comparing Gavaskar’s test record with Gayle’s T-20 record or Bradman’s centuries and average with Sachin’s Odi centuries & kohli’s ODI average respectively!! Aamir is catering to a different demography than Manoj Bajpayee & it’s naive & foolish to even compare them as they are poles apart in their vision, interpretation of roles and commercial aspects as well. Both are legend just that Aamir’s talent is more appreciated than Manoj Bajpayee keeping the more populist themes of former’s films.

However just for the action genre sake, i think most of his fans are looking at him to do a good action movie. Dhoom 4 could be one option, thought Rowdy Rathore 2 is more likely.

  78. Shraddha Kapoor On Her Fallout With YRF: I Really Hope That Aditya Chopra Offers Me Another Film Soon
By Sneha Hiro -September 10, 2018

Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor, who is riding high on the success of her recently released film Stree, is now busy promoting her next, Batti Gul Meter Chalu. The film also features Shahid Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Divyendu Sharma in the lead roles. The film is slated to hit the theatres on September 21.

Today, we met the gorgeous Shraddha for a group interview where she spoke about her fallout rumours with Yash Raj Films(YRF Films) and Aditya Chopra. For them who don’t know, Shraddha has a done a YRF film in the past titled Luv Ka The End. It is being said that Shraddha had a three film deal with YRF then but she opted out of other films and rather picked Mohit Suri’s Aashiqui 2. From then, it was reported that Shraddha and YRF’s Aditya Chopra are not on good terms with each other.

So today, when the Half Girlfriend actress was asked if things are working fine between her and YRF now, she said, “I don’t know, because I only did one film with them. That was pretty much what it was and I think that whatever has happened in my career, the ups and downs, hits and misses, I take full responsibilities for it all. It isn’t just a yes or no answer. Actually Aditya Chopra is a very important person in my life. He is someone who believed in me when nobody did after Teen Patti. He gave me a film which was on my shoulders in a sense also. There might be a lot of speculations about this but he is a very important person in my life. He as well as Mohit Suri offered me films when no one wanted to cast me. I did that one film with him and I really hope that he offers me another film soon. He is very supportive. Whenever any of my film have done well, he has messaged me.”

This is when Priyanka had her doubts. She also got to know about Salman’s habit of arriving late on the sets and starting his work way past lunch time, while his leading ladies’ scenes with Salman are shot in his absence. This is a work mode that did not suit Priyanka’s temperament, not after working in the unconditionally professional atmosphere in Hollywood and America.”

  88. By Masand on Mogul and Aamir:

    Shelved and Revived

There’s been talk about a biopic on the life of this music baron for some time now, but after a top star attached to play the late mogul exited the project citing “creative differences”, it looked unlikely that the producer (who happens to be the son of the aforesaid baron) might be able to get the film off the ground. Then the name of Bollywood’s most credible A-lister began floating around with regards to the film, and it looked like the producer may have pulled off a coup. But the excitement was short-lived. Insiders say the A-lister lost interest in the film.

Now, however, we have it on good authority that the project has been revived, and that the A-lister will not only star in it, but also produce it. (It is unclear yet whether the baron’s son will co-produce with the actor.) Among other things, the actor was uncomfortable initially about the possible backlash he could face given the spiritual undertones in the story, and the fact that he belonged to a different caste himself. But when he took over producing responsibilities, the script also reportedly underwent a rewrite.

Understandably there has been speculation whether the script will objectively address controversial but crucial aspects of its subject’s life. (Especially since the project was the brainchild of the baron’s son.) But insiders say the film’s writer-director, who has been spending time with the A-lister at his outstation farmhouse lately, hasn’t skimped on any of the prickly bits.

High time Aamir understands that his patient fans await his rare films. I am sure he does — but he is a slow steady worker who has too many pots cooking. There is the big one with Paani, now in final year or two.

Even Mogul’s final draft is being written with nth number of rewrite and awaits Aamir’s approval for production. He just takes his time to decide the next step. He also keeps a lot of kettles boiling so that he can select the best brew.

Feeling pressure or thinking about fan demands is not really his priority.

As for Naveen’s theories … its always stand-up comedy.

          Like

      • yeah intense pressure…

        Like

      • Pressure? Aamir will do what he likes – as he always has done his special way. There are wonderful roles beyond 55 and he only needs one film every 1-2 years for his kind of work. He could produce or direct also. Paani costs him 50% of his time and everyone who follows his work knows and appreciates this effort. Thus his output of films cannot be compared to any other star. The Chinese want just good movies from him, no matter how long it takes (as far as I have talked to fans). It is an Indian phenomenon to demand at least 2, better 4 movies per year.

  89. Why Bollywood and Hindi are no longer the face of Indian entertainment

Hindi is no longer the face of Indian entertainment. Cinema and TV soaps from regions beyond Mumbai are going national.
Last Published: Fri, Aug 24 2018. 04 25 PM IST
    Lata Jha

    Numbers tell the story

Earlier this year, Mint had reported that non-Hindi cinema contributed 22% of cinema exhibition chain Cinepolis’ revenue in 2017. This is a marked rise from the 5% share the segment commanded in 2005. According to the Ficci-EY media and entertainment industry report 2018, online ticketing platform BookMyShow reported average occupancy of 45-46% for regional language films in 2017, compared to around 39-40% in 2016.

The story is just as impressive overseas. Telugu and Tamil films have pretty much overtaken Bollywood as the face of Indian cinema in the United States and Malaysia, thanks to blockbusters like Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Mahanati and Mersal. The dominoes in line to flip include movie markets in the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Netherlands, Singapore and even, South America.

    Like

    • Not quite the same comparison as GST changes have benefited recently released films. The correct comparison would be on gross and I suspect the difference won’t be huge – the main difference is the strike rate has improved this year across the board and that might not be a long term trend.

      Like

    • I feel that Raazi and Stree storylines are quite accessible for many types of audience unlike the other movies mentioned which somehow caters more to upper classes. More European in boi terms! Raazi has somewhat TV drama feel and Stree has that bhoot element which is attractive for many.

      Like

      • Raazi falls perfectly in the so called Euro cinema definition (a farcical term by boi, urban cinema being a more appropriate term) being a dark spy thriller directed by Meghna Gulzar. As for more relative & rooted feel i wonder why outright desi comedies like Bareily Ki Barfi or Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan couldn’t achieve the same feat as Stree. Face value is limited in all films & entertainment is in abundance.

As you said some very desi type films like BKB, SMS also did not work big. Audience is so unpredictable like some invisible force operating. Anyways the small films always flourished whether it is Hrishidaa, Basuda type films or the present day ones. Which is a good thing for the theatres and for the actors concerned.
          Small is beautiful.

It had good doses of humor, just like Stree and although the ending was predictable, it was a decent watch nevertheless. “I have made a career of flop films,” says Manoj Bajpayee. “o;And yet, 90 percent of my films are celebrated.”

The actor pauses, lets his words soak in, even as he holds your eyes with his.

It’s as if he delivers punchlines even off screen, in his everyday conversations.

Manoj is currently promoting Gali Guleiyan, a film he is very proud of. He calls it his toughest role yet.

Directed by first-timer Dipesh Jain, Gali Guleiyan is a psychological drama about child abuse.

“I found the story unique,” says Manoj, “I knew that if I managed to pull off this character, it would be unforgettable.”

“I have given it my all,” the actor adds. “I have fallen sick, lost a lot of weight, went on the brink of a breakdown.”

“This is my toughest role because we have never made these kinds of films or written these kinds of characters. Dealing with a mind like this, which is so complex, makes it tough. It took me one-and-a-half months to get inside his mind, and really understand him.”

I know many North Indian friends who saw it on TV later and loved it. All are aware about 2.0 and with Akshay North Indians will consider it as much as their own as Tamilians will. If VFX is world class, this will be a winner.

I don’t consider 2.0’s cost to be a deterrent. Actually the makers are advertising it. It means its an asset and will make people spend money at the theatre.

Teaser may get mixed reponse though. Esp with ToH coming, dont see many Aamir fans liking the teser as they will like ToH to look bigger and better. I for one will be vouching for both the movies as i know they will be blockbusters. But looking at the behaviour of few here, i doubt if they are non-J like me.

  98. TOH is mostly for north audience and then China.

2.0 is looking at both north and south.

    And other countries.

TOH will depend on content more because the actors are not aliens or scifi characters.

    • So BB2 kind of dealing maybe there for 2.0. BB2 had content and mythical characters. Both have larger than life characters.

      Like

      • Correct me if i am wrong, but Endhiran was not as big a grosser as BB1 both wrt southern and hindi business. BB2 scaled up 2.5X with 1000 cr nett compred to BB1’s 400 cr nett business. A similar scale up of Endhiran business will get 2.0 to 500 cr nett business in india. People need some context before expecting 1000 cr nett from it.

        Like

        • BB1 made 125Cr in Hindi belt. So BB2 did 4x. Endhiran I think did 20Cr. It’s target is not 4x, Akshay and team need to ride this well over 200 Cr in Hindi belt alone. One can isolate this as any other Akshay release basically – except the economics have multiplied by 10! So all-India business will need to go 500Cr economically speaking at least if not more.

TOH is targeting similar all-India business but it doesn’t need it as much as costs are half. But Aamir has a benchmark to shoot for as usual which is at least 400Cr to make sure the economics were approximate… beyond that both films will need some pathbreaking elements to justify all the hype. Technology is key for 2.0 whereas a justification of casting Big B and Aamir for TOH.

Few who were similarly based like Sultan (released with MI), Toilet (got a bumper initial though), etc couldnt do well.

I still feel China market is a bit unpredictible and has several factors like competition from Hollywood, etc. Aamir is a big factor for sure and remains the only big star from india who has managed to impact. However i will still not guarantee.

So if any fan or maker is pre-planning keeping China business in mind may be disillusioned.

On TOH, I think you’ve carved out the Jose Mourinho persono for yourself. The ‘me’ or ‘akshay’ against the world spirit is not working. Robot 2 has plenty going for it – the delays and costs might be good but we don’t know until it releases. Your support for TOH is welcome – I’m sure it’s as genuine as you are.

        • I think TOH doing well in India seems a certainty. Sanju did 335cr, TZH did 340cr and Padmavat nearly 300cr this year. Everything points towards TOH going past 400cr and maybe much beyond. Except for a huge upset and outright rejection, I feel it does look safe economically.

I don’t know about the market in China and about the genres that can do well there. But the main market primarily remains India and it does look quite certain that TOH is going to do well here.

As for 2.0, looking at the costs it may have to do business similar to Bahubali 2 in India to be deemed to be really successful. A 400cr net or 500-600cr gross isn’t going to be enough. It will have to replicate Bahubali 2’s kind of heroics to be called a blockbuster. It will have to garner tremendous universal appreciation in India to be successful. The bar is really high. But with Shankar at its helm, it can still do it.

The delays in getting right VFX for 2point0 have caused confusion but all that is a past now. The film just have to be as good an endhiran now. If its better then we are looking at good numbers.

        • It’s also blatantly obvious that Aamir takes the Chinese market way more seriously than anyone else. He’s being very picky about what of his films get released and on top he is going there too for all out promotions. He deserves his succeses.

Others are trying to latch onto this success without doing their homework – basically taking the exam answers from the geek in the school, copying them but not really learning or understanding the examination. So one can easily see why Bajrangi works and Sultan doesn’t. Toilet rode purely on opening and after that it collapsed. Another obvious piece of evidence is Aamir’s films release much closer to India release date, showing the demand of his films. Bajrangi took 3 years for release, Sultan 2 years, BB2 3 years. Dangal and SS happened within a year.

  99. The most consistent ToI Review: Manmarziyan – 4/5

This new-age love story with Facebook friend requests and Tinder conversations also has the charm and depth of an old-school love saga. The motif of twins, peppered right through the film is funny but a bit too random. At times, it may be little too deep for millennials, but Manmarziyaan is one of the best romantic movies to come out of Bollywood in a long time.

The performances by Taapsee, Vicky and Abhishek are special, to say the least. Taapsee, overcomes a few initial hiccups, to sink her teeth into the central role. This is by far, the best performance of her career. Vicky, as the quintessential Punjabi munda, who does not really have a handle on life, is superb too. But it’s Abhishek’s performance that adds to the drama. He plays the good guy with masterful restraint. Manmarziyaan is as much his film, as it is Taapsee’s.

After the film’s director Krish left the project mid-way to begin work on the upcoming NTR biopic, followed by Sonu Sood and actress Swati Semwal’s exit, it has been reported that another dark cloud is looming over the film.

According to latest reports, the business head of Zee Studios, Sujay Kutty has been sacked. The reason for this is believed to be because he went ahead with reshoots that inflated the budget by an estimated Rs 30 crore, above the previously agreed Rs 70 crore total budget. The re-shoots were said to be done over a 10-day schedule, but now, the film will have multiple changes along with Ganesh Acharya choreographing a song featuring Kangana and Ankita Lokhande.

Reacting to these reports, Kangana said in a statement that rumours of the business head being fired because of the film had “no logic” and was just a “nasty story.” She, however, admitted that he did leave months ago, but because of “something internal.”

She reasoned that since ‘Manikarnika’ was being made under the production house, they could easily sell the project rather than sack their employee.

‘Manikarnika’ is scheduled for a release on 25 January.

TOH doesn’t have the same siesmic cast or director (Kjo’s next post KKHH would always be a big deal) but it’s got other factors that will come up. Bachchan’s blog will be busy over the next few weeks.

      • yes agree completely. Nothing as big as K3G since all things considered .Of course Johar as you said really packed everyone in but still the combination of Aamir and Bachchan, Aamir’s incredible standing (now including Dangal, relative to genre an even stronger moment than the Hirani films), the period element, all of this makes up for the smaller cast (by K3G standards). Really hope the script (and Aamir!) make up for the director here. Secondly also hope they’ve given enough attention to the music as opposed to just a passable soundtrack. But the script is everything. With everything that’s in place here a Dhoom-like business-as-usual logic won’t work.

Talking about the Amrita being a part of the film, Sanjay Raut, who is producing the film said that she is best suited for the role as Meenatai was Balasaheb’s backbone as she held the family together and was away from politics. Furthermore, Amrita has that same innocence on her face as her character.

        • Personally I would have kept the 2.0 teaser a bit more restrained and concentrated more on the trailer. If you show all the FX, or build it around all the FX sequences, it’s hard to do much more in the trailer. I am still waiting for the trailer to get a sense of what the rest of the narrative is but I think strategically this might have been a miscalculation.

To be fair Hollywood sequels also very rarely match up to the original films. They keep making them bigger and certainly they justify the technology but otherwise the ‘stories’ are usually poorer. Even Black Panther I found overrated for this reason. I can guess as to why this became so huge, it certainly was a very entertaining film, loved some of the visual design as well, but in terms of the ‘story’ it was just way too basic.

This is precisely what concerns me about TOH. Because of Aamir I’m hopeful this won’t happen but the real issue here isn’t the director but the producer! People have gone overboard attacking Acharya. Does anyone really believe he decides on these scripts himself? He’s just an in-house director meant to be functional enough once everything is in place (in some ways his own best work might still be on segments of Tashan, liked some of the Akshay bits here… lol it’s Naveen’s day!). Aditya Chopra on these big films has long shown (as opposed to the much better smaller films Yashraj produces) that he’s just going in for the biggest bang. What works for TOH is nonetheless the fact that it’s coming out of a book, hopefully the script is better, and then again Aamir. I don’t deny that having a good director even with everything else decided is still a better idea. But in fairness there are no obvious candidates in Bollywood to tackle this sort of genre (there are many down South, not that Aditya Chopra would ever have the imagination to do this!). There’s simply no one who handles big masala projects. Maybe Santoshi, Khakee was awesome, but its been 14 years or whatever since. You don’t need the Salman kind of Telugu-inspired masala for this sort of thing. I suppose Prabhudevaa might not have been a bad bet. He understands this format very well. On the other hand he’s not refined enough for this kind of production. In any case I don’t Acharya is the problem. D3 was fine. Whatever issues one might have with it those aren’t really his fault.

  127. Did 2.0 teaser reveal the plot of Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar film?

Vinayagar Chaturthi 2018 began with a fabulous treat for Rajinikanth fans. The teaser of director Shankar’s upcoming film 2.0 was released today, finally, after many delays. Within a few minutes, the video received about one lakh views on YouTube.

Unlike the CGI in the first part Enthiran, which was criticised for being mediocre, the visual effects in the upcoming film look decent. A little over the top, to be honest.

Shankar, who is stringent when it comes to revealing even small details about his films, has let slip quite a lot of the plot in the teaser.

Even from the one minute-thirty-second teaser, you know exactly what 2.0 is going to be about.

The first part ended with the government ordering Vaseegaran (Rajinikanth) to dismantle Chitti, after the havoc he creates in Chennai for his love interest Sana (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). Before the end credits rolled, we saw Chitti in a museum, where he was kept for public exhibition.

Now, looks like he has been called back to duty by the same government to fight the mysterious supervillain (Akshay Kumar). Akshay Kumar could be a scientist who crosses over to the dark side after a personal loss. A story so typical of supervillains from across the Marvel and DC universe.

This supervillain wields a certain force over mobile phones all over the world – a kind of telekinesis that applies to only mobile phones. In addition to that, he seems to control crows, much like the way Antman controls ants.

The story seems to be about how modern humans are slaves to their mobile phones. There is probably no bigger calamity today than losing your mobile phone. It is an extended arm for most of us.

The teaser also goes on to show both versions of Chitti – the good Blue Chitti and the evil Red Chitti (a touch of Dr Bohra from the first part). It could mean two possibilities: either they upgrade Blue Chitti after he fails to stop the crow man, or they make a new Red Chitti and these two together then take on crow man.

There is a high chance that both the Chittis will fight this battle together. There is a hint too. It is said that Sudhanshu Pandey is playing the son of Bohra and we get a glimpse of him in the teaser when Vaseegara suggests the idea of resurrecting Chitti.

This could mean that Bohra Jr will be the one to create Red Chitti, the evil necessary to fight evil.

But Shankar might have a few surprises up his sleeve. We hope he does.

    • Lets sum it up. 2.0 teaser launch is a disaster and has become a big joke in social media. Next up is ToH trailer on 27th – the unique vision of combining lagaan, tashan and dhoom 3.

  128. @LS – ToH promotion plans are quite simple. They will start with releasing character posters from next week (17th is a probable start date given the current noise in twitter). The trailer (no teaser thankfully) will release on 27th. Then over the next 6 weeks they will release song teasers (there are total 3 songs in the film).

The confusion is what content to release and regarding promotional material. Also post-production editing and vfx work is ongoing.

    • What no teaser from ToH…that’s a disappointment to begin with, because i am damn sure it would have been good.
Anyway ToH is already on my watch list. The only thing that can change is reviews now.

Same goes with 2point0. BTW, i heard that 3D teaser was awesome. That reaffirms my faith because i would never have watched in 2D anyways. So i am good. Better lick for those planning to watch on mobile, laptop and TV later on. And yeas, these guys are the first ones to write essays on the movie.

      • For your sake, I hope people show up in theatres to watch 2.0! The paying public has recently watched Avengers 3, which did a phenomenal 227 cr nett business in India.

Wont be spending my money watching tacky vfx in theater. But ToH is on watch-list, but trailer will make or break it for me as far as buying theatre ticket is concerned.

      • Marcus – There is a conspiracy theory going on; i dont know how true those are.
The teaser shown by makers are exactly the one that got leaked. Why will producers show the same when it was already see, though via a mobile shoot video and without sound.

Leaving aside the conspiracy theory…the fact that we have hindi audience disappointed on 1. Not showing Akshay in the teaser (one dialog for 2 sec would have sufficed) and 2. VFX in 2D not upto the mark….are both something which are easy to overcome over next 2 months. If 2point0 was coming mid oct i would have been worried. but its 2 months. Lot of water will flow under Yamuna and Cauvery.
Tamil audience are not very disappointed. Their excitement caused by hype has been subdued. This was good as we saw in Kaala the hype did not work.

So still on backfoot, but the team is so good that advantage can be given to them to take double leap soon.

  129. Akshay Kumar is the perfect face for SOCIAL AWARENESS campaigns
    BySubhash K. JhaSep 14, 2018 – 10:28 am IST

If there is one Indian actor whose voice carries far beyond the screen, it is Akshay Kumar. The image of the truly dedicated Indian citizen, who uses his immense star-power for social reform, has now infiltrated the movie-going experience permanently.

The new anti-smoking statutory warning featuring Akshay appended to every film is not only a vast improvement on the ugly un-aesthetic no-smoking ads screened mandatorily earlier with every film, they also promote the need to provide women with hygienic sanitary pads.

Akshay Kumar describes the ad as a “two-in-one”, like those radio-cassette players in the 1970s. “We tell the public how harmful smoking is. At the same time we also tell them how the money saved on cigarettes can be used to provide a disease-free life for the womenfolk of the family,” says Akshay.

Balki who directed the ad says it was the result of intense brainstorming. “Most people complained on how unpleasant the anti-smoking statutory warnings screened compulsorily before every film, were. Akshay and I came up with the concept of an ad which dissuades smoking and promotes the use of sanitary pads. People seem to have liked it.”

Apparently the request for a “no-smoking ad that doesn’t put off movie audiences” came straight from the I & B ministry itself. Not just that. Akshay has also shot three highly engaging ads promoting road safety where he pulls up commuters breaking road rules with a sarcastic reference the traffic being “baap ka road”.

The attempt to use his star power to promote civic protocol has the approval of the top-level in the BJP government. Says Shatrughan Sinha, “I cannot think of any Bollywood superstar with a cleaner image than Akshay Kumar. He is the right face and personality to promote good healthy living.”

One hears many more governmental campaigns are being planned with Akshay as the face of ‘India Shining’, “Safety of women is a prime concern for Akshay. We’ll be seeing more of that soon from him,” says a source from the ruling party.
