Looks cartoonish and over the top. Akshay looks menancing but Rajni should stick to age appropriate movies now.

Could be a well made movie but the vfx is bad and stunts over the top.

One can be a visionary in story telling but action scenes look waaayyyy over the top.

  4. Very poor in all respects considering its hype/ budget..A sureshot disaster on the way as covering its cost would be an uphill task.

  5. Interesting; something new. Have a feeling it will work. Love Rajni’s ‘cockoo’ at the end.

Reminds me in a small way about a Hitchcock film, ‘ The Birds’.

  11. As someone who loved the first Robot (including for its imagination) I’m going to give Shankar the benefit of the doubt. I didn’t mind the teaser to be honest but there’s no getting away from the fact that the FX look ‘animated’. Or more precisely this is a problem that has long plagued Indian cinema where the FX are somewhere in between those produced by Hollywood and true animation. China is much better in this regard though they too sometimes have this problem (not to the same degree). In Hollywood you see this in a smaller film like the Commuter (Neeson) where even very basic stuff like a train being derailed looked surprisingly ‘animated’. But of course this is not the norm for Bollywood. The tweet Naveen has posted of the guy claiming that this looks better than 75m Hollywood films is absurd to say the least. Obviously I have no technical expertise in this matter but I’m not sure why there is this ‘animation’ problem that plagues non-Hollywood industries, certainly India. It’s clear that others haven’t yet learnt to do it at a fraction of Hollywood’s cost and they of course don’t have Hollywood budgets to do the very same. Incidentally this doesn’t mean I’m a fan of all Hollywood FX. In most of the superhero stuff I find it used very unimaginatively but this is a somewhat different debate. One final example here. Baahubali (mentioned this at the time) also exhibits the same problem in many of the action sequences, specially the second film which relies even more on them (the whole climax sequence for example).

Getting back to the current Robot it’s true that Shankar seems to also have the Hollywood disease in the sequel of just trying to make it ‘bigger’ and hence forced to rely on vastly more FX. If you haven’t cracked the code it’s better not to overdo things. Again I didn’t mind the teaser, would have to see a proper trailer to get a better sense of the film, but it is hard to ‘forget’ all the Hollywood that one has ever seen and not to the comparison. In the older film (Robot) I thought the balance was overall fine, these weaknesses weren’t as exposed. In this current film there’s probably no getting away from them. Still, and having said all of this, weaker FX (in the Hollywood sense) are not deal-breakers for me. But the film also has to have enough going for it otherwise. Rahman somewhere said that the climax here was extraordinary. I’m going to stick with a wait and watch (pun intended!) stance for now.

Incidentally, and again to repeat myself, I always found Akshay’s get-up horrendous here. Not least because it’s too cartoonish. And in any case it’s just too much. I could be there instead of Akshay and no one would notice!

    • Aishwarya Rai was also good in Robot. There was more story there. I cant say anything about this just looking at the teaser. I think a trailer is also coming.

    • I agree on everything including you being there instead of Akshay. 😛

The VFX are good with the bird flying over. However the stadium scenes lack the same finesse. Maybe this still needs processing, i don’t know. But agree to your overall point. I also dont agree with the tweet i posted. I did that not to support that view.

I think Akshay’s character is the only novelty here. Nothing about Chitti or Vaseegaran is new. I guess Akshay’s character will not be exposed much, but then the Hindi movie box office will get impacted. While I understand the need to keep Akshay’s character under wraps for viewing pleasure, the same would not work in commercial sense. Hopefully the makers have thought through this. because even a movie made on 1/10th of that budget and difficult genres with Akshay gets over 100 Cr with little difficulty. So here he needs to be promoted more.

Another pleasure would be the enhanced version of Chitti which will be called 2.0 which along with Chitti will fight with Akshay in the climax. 2.0 comes in the last scene which is the best of the teser.

Overall teaser rating : 3/5 (average)

      Was expecting 4.5/5

      Overall underwhelming but not disappointed.

Dude…..do you really think anyone is going to believe this? you post a tweet WITHOUT any comment of your own and NOW you claim that you posted it NOT to support the view? Give me a break.

Akshay’s character looks like….don’t even know where to put it. Why not let Akshay have a normal bad guy getup instead of making him look like whatever the hell he looks like….there is no novelty here. The movie’s biggest draws are VFX, Shankar, Rajni AND Akshay!

  12. This is going to be as tacky as Zero with the overdose of poor vfx in both films. BUT krrish films did ok in India, right?

The plex audience gave 227 cr business to Avengers 3 this year. So they will laugh at this as many reports are saying already. But this might still work with salman’s and akshay’s fans in massy belts.

Anyways, dont think Devgn will shift the release dateof Dhamaal 3 after this. And for Aamir this is a mauka mauka moment to release ToH first look.

  13. Abysmally poor VFX. Contemporary superhero/sci-fi movies rely heavily on VFX to be the main draw. Why even have it when you cannot match up to exacting standards that have propelled Hwood offerings to the top of Indian BO? Comparisons to Avengers and every other recent Hwood hit are bound to happen.

Be it BB2’s climax, Dhoom 3’s comical bike scenes, first Robot, Ra 1 and now this, indian cinema is nowhere near any hollywood standard so I don’t know why some folks continue to compare. I am not even expecting some earth shattering VFX from TOH either. Just give me an entertaining movie!

Yup that too…point was not to compare with h’wood right now. Even Hollywood has moved on from VFX is out biggest USP genre. When people watch Marvel movies these days, they are far more interested in characters than special effects.

    • BB2 belongs to the swords n cloaks genre, which typically always relied more on story/script rather than VFX.

But the superhero/scifi genre always relied more on VFX. Endhiran, Krish, Ra-1 etc were released a decade or more ago, and were notable because of the novelty of watching VFX laden desi superhero movies on the large screen. People were just getting the initial taste of this genre in a desi format. However, too many Hwood superhero movies have released since then, with progressively better effects, which perhaps have already made the Indian audiences a more discerning consumer. The glaring differences are more noticeable now.

  15. By in large the Indian film going public hasn’t exposed itself to Hollywood with the exception of a couple of high VFX films a year. This is why 2.0 stands a chance. But the mistake is to sell the product as a very high cost & technology film. BB2 never did this – its focus was a story, drama and special effects were just a by product of this. If 2.0 focuses on story and sells this way first it has a chance. The trailer is more important now, the damage might be done here though.

As tacky as BB2 was it’s not the main reason why people turned up to watch it. Once you are sold with a movies premise and story the VFX matters less…the problem with 2.0 is it’s sold itself predominantly on VFX. The $75mm tweets were a bad idea. Should have pushed a trailer that gave some context to Endhiran and then this sequel. Especially as this film is targeting the North Indian audience a lot more aggressively this time around. And Akshay should have been promoted a lot more, his blink and you miss it moment is a bad move. I haven’t seen Endhiran and this promo does nothing to entice me to see what the fuss is about i.e whether I should bother to watch Endhiran and then this as 2.0 looks pretty poor from this.

Bahubali got this basic thing right.

Also, BB2 had a more ‘indian’ feel to it. Robot and 2.0 do not! I think the audience would take more of a grand look movie (Padmavati) than a special effects one because of the indian feeling to it.

    • Agree with everything here and will add that 2.0 was announced to beat Baahubali 1. Enthiran was the top South Indian movie before BB1. Both (BB2 and 2.0) were supposed to release a few months apart. The basic idea was that we (2.0 team) can put more money and show a bigger “visual” spectacle. Akshay was brought in to balance the North equation as they already have Rajinikanth. Otherwise, the unit was initially looking at Tamil actors for the part.

Coming to the film itself, this is not a direct continuation or related to Enthiran except that the characters are reused from what one hears. Shankar always has exciting concepts and 2.0 seems to be based on one such concept rather than a full-fledged script. The idea is to take an exciting concept and fill it with visual effects.

Baahubali was planned as a two-part film right from the start. However, none has anticipated the cliffhanger (WKKB) to become so massive, a national obsession, which made it easy for them. They did not really bother about giving the “best” visual output. The unit was happy with good/very good output and a release on time.

      Like

      • I was never convinced it could do a Baahubali even in the best case scenario. The first film did a fraction of the first Baahubali.

      • I don’t think apart from fans, anyone had planned to be one up over other films.
But 2.0 was an ambitious project from day 1. It is the biggest Indian film. Fans lapped it up.

No doubt the teaser has been underwhelming.

What’s the purpose of a teaser for a big film?…To set the ball rolling for trailer and to negotiate with the theatre owners on tickets price and ratios.
Teaser was not needed to excite the fans. They will line up because this is unseen territory.

Now is the teaser enough to say a movie is good or bad?
It would be unfair and a lot of prejudice can make one react.

Saw the #2Point0 teaser on a really small screen. Felt a bit meh. But just saw it in 3D on the big screen and have to say this. It’s the *cleanest* 3D image (in terms of clarity, colour, brightness) I have seen. Quite blown away, given how muddy and bleary 3D films usually look.

    • If they can make this the USP i.e. 3D it will make a huge difference.

      • this still doesn’t solve the entire problem as most people will not access it in 3D. Even in the US most people don’t. In any case I’ll wait for a proper trailer though you’re right in that if you have this kind of teaser centered around the FX you have to nail it.

        • I’ve referenced my thoughts on the earlier film in this thread but yes I loved it and didn’t really have a problem with the FX. The problems were visible but disguised to a great degree. Don’t think they’ll be able to do as much of that over here. But it’s also true that a convincing narrative can take care of a lot of this stuff. If you’re invested enough in the film you’ll overlook this. Much as in BB also the ‘animation’ is very visible but within the larger world of that film it doesn’t matter as much (though I do think the climax sequence of BB2 was a bit much in this sense).

        • I am not a big fan of BB, therefore didn’t watch BB2. I will get into the details some other time but I understand why it was a success. The FX was alright but the whole climbing the waterfalls and falling down hundreds of feet without a scratch, others watching the war from the palace as if it were telecasted live on TV was too much for me.

BB was an original Indian fairly tale. If I have to draw a parallel, I would liken this to success of Chandrakantha on Doordarshan. Straight out of Chandamama books. It was a refreshing attempt on the big screen, surprisingly no one tried this before (in a long time?). First one warmed up to the audiences and BB2 maximized it as far as the BO is concerned.

Flying cellphone is part of the story. It is based on social message. Do you know the story? Akshay plays a crow to take revenge. Crows were most common birds in India till 20 yr back but Cellphone tower radiation has caused them to completely extinct. I dont doubt story or Shankar’s creativity looking at his track record. Robot was more creative and sensible than any Hollywood superhero movie, it shows growth of a Robot in entertaining way.

Though, I have complains about VFX, though this is same teaser as released 7 months back when VFX work had just started and this teaser was shown to investors and Producers. But, Shankar was not happy himself with it and there were news floating around of his moving onto Indian2.
So, there is chance it should be improved in the film but why release it when they were not satisfied with it themselves.

For those interested, #Baahubali or #Shivaay have different premise which looks great in VFX as you see it as static object or background.
Real challenge comes in VFX when it has to show fluidity in motion of fictional character & that looks excellent in #2Point0Teaser.
