  2. Aamir is supervising the trailer of ToH:

    ****

“The trailer of the film is expected to release on September 27 or 28. The makers are going to release the first look on Monday and trailer will be out around Yash Chopra’s birth anniversary — September 27. So, recently the cast and crew were seen at the studio watching some footage of the trailer. Earlier too, Aamir had arranged a special screening of the film’s trailer for his non-industry friends to get reactions on the look and the film,” says a source.

It is said that Aamir is keeping a watch on how the final cut of the trailer is shaping up. He has already mentioned that he is going to start work on other projects only after the release of Thugs of Hindostan. Ddirected by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film stars Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Sheikh and Amitabh Bachchan.

  8. We spoke to Trade Expert, Editor, Super Cinema Amul Vikas Mohan about how the films are faring on the first day. As expected Manmarziyaan has taken a lead. Interestingly, it’s Mitron which took the second spot in the tally.

Manmarziyaan movie review: Abhishek, Taapsee and Vicky deliver solid performances in a film that tugs at your heart and leaves you emotional

Amul informs that Manmarziyaan is doing the best in the lot. The opening day occupancy is somewhere near 15-20 per cent which he thinks is good. Mitron takes the number 2 spot with morning occupancy of around 5-7 per cent to 10 per cent at a few places. Amul is positive that Manmarziyaan will show more growth by the end of the day. He also mentioned that the films are expected to pick up slowly, probably in the evening shows.

Coming to the other film which is doing wonders at the box office, Stree is expected to make Rs 100 crore this weekend. Amul is confident if not for this weekend, the film will most definitely hit the target next Monday or Tuesday.

  9. Manmarziyan has opened in the range of 10-15% which is disastrous but on expected lines..It needs a strong word of mouth to pick up and have any impact on boxoffice which seems unlikely. Looking at this kind of opening, i think game is over for Abhishek. When you open a film in the same range as that of your father who is 75 plus, you should quit the acting at the very moment. In case film shows some legs and holds well at ticket window still the credit will go to content not to actors particularly Abhishek who is more familier to audience than others starring in the film.

    • I dunno why you wud expect an opener here. Neither kashyap nor abhishek are at their best draw at present. Vicky and pannu are decent actors but not stars. If this was to work, it wud be thru wom and a long run at theaters.

      • I was expecting a decent opening here just because of Abhishek. He is around since 18 years and had worked in some really good films. This time he came after a long time and the film taking 10-15% opening is a shocker.. Don’t you think so?

        Like

  10. It’s a film that always was going to depend on good WOM. A 4.5-5cr opening is still going to be alright. It will surely improve over the week end.

Abhishek isn’t at the peak of his career right now. Taapsi and Vicky Kaushal aren’t stars as well. And Kashyap hardly has a great BO record lately.

But reviews suggest that it is a good film. Good WOM should help it to a good extent.

However from a dates point of view, and considering all the young stars are working on a Yrf film during that time period, it seems like the only person available is SRK? He still hasn’t signed anything post Zero

Manmarziyan Low Start – Mitron Love Sonia Very Dull

There were three main Hindi releases this week with Love Sonia, Manmarziyan and Mitron as well as other films like 22 Hours and Turning Point which have no awareness.

Manmarziyan had a slow start of 10-15% but was the best of the lot. The film actually had good music but the way it was shown in trailers left a lot to be desired and the music basically goes to waste. The film is a love story and this could have really given the film a lift but music can only really work for a film if it is presented correctly on screen.

The director has had an awful year coming of a big flop with Mukkabaaz and a huge disaster Sacred Games in the digital space but this is said to be his most commercial venture. The thinking here is that probably the likes of Mukkabaaz and Gangs Of Wasseypur and others have failed because they were less commercial when the truth is they were bad films. The box office is a simple process in that if something entertains it will do well and if you bore you will be out.

And since then they’ve had to sit in the dumpster while films like Raazi and other medium budget flicks crack the ‘100cr’ club when they shouldn’t. All against a backdrop of Race 3, JHMS and Tubelight disasters. Their golden geese have failed them and they always pounce on anything Bachchan if it’s moving just like Salman with a shotgun or in a car.

  18. Just came back from Manmarziyan , This is very much Anurag Kashyap style love story minus cuss words. And this is not his first attempt in this genre , Dev D was the one where principle characters were very impulsive and flawed. Here also Vicky and Rumy are similar characters from Dev-D .. madly in love , but spiritual connection is quite shallow, at same time not responsible for self actions , just living the life in moments without any future plans. But here important addition in their mad word is a very mature and well balanced guy Abhishek , he brings a lot of sanity in proceedings. Dev D lacked such character, so Manmarziyan has a plus here. Kashyap presented on screen a complete psychological process behind every movement of these characters , the decisions they take, the emotions they are going through. Everything is so relatable. He displayed all the confusions they went through before taking a final decision. This is something new which we have not seen before. But here lies the problem also, their confusion irritates the audience. Going back and forth on same thing (Like Tapsee and Vicky planned to flee from home twice … she came back to him twice, Though she moved on and got married to Abhishek , she keeps on going back to Vicky .. and regrets every time. Audience don’t want to see such psychic characters , despite the fact that their actions are relatable .. still you don’t want to invest in their confusion (even though I loved this entire journey). Biggest plus of movie is Music and Performances , Tapsee stole the show and Abhishek was just perfect in every sense, Vicky was good too .. but Abhishek was more likeable.

I thought this movie will at least connect with youngsters , but no … in my show (which was houseful noon show) a group (10+) of young guys(and gals) wanted to leave the show at interval .. but they came back .. ‘Bore kar diya yaar’ was their reaction by end of movie. I am not sure of rest of audience, but surely not everyone enjoyed the show. It will get extremely mixed reactions … though I liked it.

    3.5/5 from me …

    • Reading the reviews, it’s pretty much evident that this is a feminist story, and not in a good way.

People can respond to a film like Pink because it certainly doesn’t push feminism too far. But supporting a truly liberated woman, in all senses of the word, is going to be a difficult thing to digest for the majority.

I’m really looking forward to it but I don’t hold high hopes at the Box Office. Anything above 50 Crores would be astounding!

I am still not sure why AB Jr. did this movie with relative newcomers. I don’t see what’s in it for him. Working with Kashyap? I am sure he could have come up with something much better for him. I mean just the age difference seems weird (Kaushal is 30, Pannu 31 and AB 42) in the context of the trailer. Not saying that a 42 year old can’t play a 20 something guy but a seasoned actor like AB who is now extremely choosy with his movies….something is off here. This is not even a cheap easy hit like HF3 where one can be forgiven to get an easy paycheck!

I am not entirely clear on where AB winds up from here or what role will he do next. I think a solo movie with someone like Sriram Raghavan would be a great idea…..I would have loved to see him Badlaapur.

          • I love the Before trilogy. The last one is probably my absolute favorite. Next would probably be the first film. I read in one of the pieces that this might have been where Kashyap wanted to go in terms of an ending but obviously in a commercial venture he had to compromise. Don’t know whether this is such speculation or not. A lot of critics and viewers have loved the closing moments of the film and even without seeing it I can kind of understand the link. But Before Midnight certainly ends beautiful. It’s just pitch perfect. A better ‘ending’ couldn’t have been devised for it.

Anyway hope to catch Manmarziyaan tomorrow.

Yup you are a sap and so am I.

I watched MANMARZIYAN too tonight. I haven’t been as moved by you but yes, it’s an interesting take where Kashyap actually tries to ‘tone’ down his DEV D fervor. Abhishek tries hard in some of the initial scenes but whenever he breaks down with ‘dignity’ he’s truly superb in this movie. [ And it is proof here how Hrithik fares so miserably as an ‘actor’ when compared to him; and I don’t even consider Abhishek a strong actor at all.] Kaushal is frenzy-personified but this movie is Tapsee’s all the way. She ‘owns’ these two – of course I will attest to it that Kashyap has devoted a finely well-etched characterization to Tapsee’s Rumi..

If possible, will write something; else, something from Satyam/Q is assured!

        • Yes that I did see. He said he was in tears and overwhelmed but wouldn’t say what it was about. That very day he and some Bollywood figures had attended a screening of the film. In any case he’s maintained pin drop silence on the subject throughout. Hasn’t said a word on the film. Did send handwritten notes to the writer, the other two actors, they all talked about it. Not sure if he sent one to Kashyap.

          • He’s in a catch-22 situation. He’d be criticised if he openly praises Abhishek — but man, in this case it’s more than well deserved.

Everything about Abhishek’s performance is pitch-perfect. The pauses between the lines (his dialogue delivery was never perfect earlier), the maturity in facial expressions (the economy, rather) and just relying on his ‘presence’ to create an impact. It’s a performance worthy of all accolades. A very Mohanlal like performance, if I have to add more.

No doubt Kashyap has a role to play in this but Abhishek can damn well be proud of this one!

    • agree totally, the trending is really important. But it does matter if the afternoon and specially evening shows picked up or not because that too indicates trending and looks like they did.

Abhishek I think has certainly achieved his goal here of re-establishing credibility as an actor. But now the film also needs to do well, to get that other half of the equation.

      • I don’t think Abhishek lost any credibility as an actor. I think he’s lost a significant amount as a star though. MM goes a long way to showing this again unfortunately.

His film choices post Bol Bachchan have been very poor and he’s gone off the radar. No one can question JBJ (post BNB), Sarkar Raaj (post Sarkar), Delhi 6 (post RDB), Raavan (post Yuva/Guru), KGJJS (post Jodha Akbar), Dum Maro Dum (post Bluffmaster) – these were logical decisions. The directors either gave there best box office performances in their previous films or had success with Abhishek previously. So I don’t question many choices between 06-12 except the odd Game or Players plus Drona.

Where I think he has made a big error is not following the Paa model for himself. He can surely produce films – I mean freaking John Abraham is! Practically everyone is!

Also the 6 films above are kind of (post mortem) neither arthouse or purely commercial. For some reason his films are just not interesting mainstream audiences completely. He had a critical phase in 06/07 when he could have cashed in. 09 with Paa he could have created a new model. 12 with Bol Bachchan again an opportunity. 15 a failed comeback with All is Well. Every 3 years he’s had a chance. This won’t keep happening but then he seems cool and content with his path. All that matters in the end.

JrB has tried to the extent that was possible for his skillset, was given more than a fair share of breaks (courtesy BigB off course) as compared to his peers, but was barely able to register a few modest successes.
When faced with middling success, most people born with oral silver spoons hardly kick it up a notch. He can never have the motivation or incentive to work as hard or as smart as even a John Abraham who came from a lower middle class family. John has to keep building up on his modest successes, one brick at a time.
Even a Ranbir knows that he has to work hard, despite being a Kapoor. There just weren’t that many millions left behind by Raj or even will be left by Rishi.
JrB on the other hand knows that there are 1000crs waiting at the end of the rainbow, in about 10-12 yrs max.

          • I think, and with all due respect to Nykavi, this kind of thinking has deeper roots. The idea that every motivation is at bottom an ‘economic’ one. So much of human history, so many human actions become incomprehensible if you follow this view. Getting back to Abhishek I will also say bluntly that this is a rather shallow if not silly reading. Not a minority view by any means when it comes to contemporary ‘New India’ but that’s another discussion.

          • I think a sort of complacency sets in when one is too comfortable either with money or without money when one wants to be out of rat race. It also maybe an indication that one does not take something too seriously and enjoy life on one’s own terms. An occassional splash does not mean much. Deepika P has taken a big break inspite of a big success ceding ground for alia and others.
Too much expectations lead to some disappointments among fans besides putting undue pressure on actors. Or on any other professional or businessman or student for that matter.

Rajini films are not working big in south anymore. Lingaa was like Tubelight, Kabali was like Race 3 given all the controversy over fraud BO reporting. Kaala was average in TN, flop in hindi and telegu. So I will be surprised if 2.0 goes crazy in south.

More importantly the scale on which he planned the project was commercially not viable. Also, setting aside five years of his precious time for the Mahabharat meant losing out on doing at least three feature films. So no. No Mahabharat.”

  41. Dear BOI on Manmarziyan:

Manmarziyan Mitron Love Sonia First day Business
    Saturday 15 September 2018 11.30
    Box Office India Trade Network

New Hindi releases Love Sonia, Manmarziyan and Mitron could not make much of an impact on day one at the box office with the biggest film of the three Manmarziyan outpacing the others by a distance.

Manmarziyan had a low first day with collections of 3.25 crore nett with Delhi NCR and East Punjab doing the best business. The last Abhishek Bachchan solo film All Is Well had grossed 2.37 crore nett and that film was a bit of a disaster.

In this film the music was far better (though not utilized properly) and it had support from younger actors also and has not even done 1 crore nett better and its come three years later. Manmarziyan had some growth in the evening but it was the normal growth that comes in the evening. The collections of the film are similar to Hichki but that film was not targeted at the youth like Manmarziyan.

There should be some growth today but it will be tough road ahead. The film is set in Amritsar and that city has hardly collected 3 lakhs nett so the locals have not even come where the film is set. This happened with another film of the same director when Gangs Of Wasseypur had a Bihar setting and local characters but was a disaster in Bihar.

Mitron had a very poor day as it collected around 40-50 lakhs nett on day one. The film has not even done well in Gujarat where it had better chances. The concept was decent but the audience was juts not interested possibly due to the actors or just lack of awareness.

Love Sonia was the worst of the three with collections in the 25 lakhs nett range. Both Mitron and Love Sonia will also grow but from these low numbers the films hardly have much chance even if they to double up.

  44. So, before we get into ToH’s promotional over-drive (to be inaugurated by the incorrigible Komal Nahata tomorrow), here is my so-called ‘reasonable’ take on ToH’s BO:

D3 (despite all the bashing and lashing it received) opened at 36 cr in 2013 and went on to make 284 cr all india nett. 5 years later, a similar big opening will amount to 46 cr opening. From there, D3 like trending will take it to 360 cr nett total. I think that is what D3 would do today considering inflation and GST. Its nothing absurd since TZH and Sanju both did something near to this in the last few months.

With Aamir devoting 2 years to ToH (instead of his 6 months spent on D3), i would expect ToH to do 400+ cr.

    • It is good he had a Dangal in between . Else D3 would have harmed TOH chances . But agree this would also be more on WOM rather than the public going all out in the first three days.
Trailer and the movie better be good. In a way it is good that nothing much is known about the movie. They have kept the buzz alive by just floating rumours on everything under the sun

      • Trending is more difficult when you are bound to take a real big opening due to hype and nature of the film.

Irrespective of whether it releases on 7th or 8th Nov, I want first sunday (11th Nov) to be comfortably beyond 50 cr nett mark to feel at ease about the trending.

  52. Stree makers, Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik join hands for the remake of this Marathi film
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkSep 15, 2018 – 12:31 pm IST
After the stupendous success of Stree, if you are wondering if Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik are planning a return with the sequel, then you may be wrong. Although a sequel is indeed on the cards, the director-producer Jodi is keen on exploring a different subject this time, a rather serious one. The duo is planning to make a film on the tabooed topic of surrogacy and it will be a remake of 2011 Marathi drama Mala Aayi Vhaaychay [I Want To Be A Mother].

Featuring Urmila Kanitkar, Stacy Bee amongst others, the film not only approaches the topic of surrogacy but also the practice of many foreigners coming in search of poor Indian village women as their surrogates. The film throws light on how poverty forces Lavani dancer Urmila to agree to surrogacy under Mary’s persuasion. But after the doctor reveals that the child will be born with medical complications, Mary leaves the pregnant Urmila in a lurch. Years later, the kid, with his mother’s foreign genes is growing up with Urmila as his caretaker and is very fond of his mother. However, a guilt driven Mary returns to find her child and decides to take him away with her. The film deals with the trauma of women and the biggest question – if the child will live with his blood-related mother or the mother who has given birth to him and taken care of him?

Coming back to the Hindi remake, director Amar Kaushik stated that he loves ma-bachchon ki kahani [mother-children stories] and also revealed that this one is based on a true story. He added that the cases came to a practicing lawyer named Samruddhi Porey who practices at Bombay High Court.

Mala Aai Vhaaychay bagged the National Award for the Best Marathi Film in 2011. Producer Dinesh Vijan mentioned that the work on the Hindi remake has already kicked off with his writer Sita Menon working on the script for the past one year. He concluded in reports adding that the story is currently being written taking new surrogacy laws under consideration. The actors for the Hindi version of the film are yet to be finalized.

        • To be honest I’ve never been too excited about the MB idea anyway. The truly interesting film on the subject would be hard to pull off in the current environment. The lesser film would be great entertainment but I personally expect more from Aamir than just a BB version of MB. When you tackle this sort of epic you should try and create something for the ages. But with the budget that would be involved here it would be hard to take too many risks. Of course I’ll show up for Aamir at the theater either way but none of the currently rumored projects excite me. I think at this point in time he should really take on something like Lagaan. Not that film but something epic for the ages, a period piece of some sort. I really wish he had been completely in charge of TOH. In fairness to him he’s probably learnt from the MP experience. If you make an authentic film the risks are greater (even though any such thing would be safe with him, just on the initial), and the stuff everyone else pulls where it’s really all about hype, making a killing in the first week or two and running away, isn’t his style. It’s one thing to act in these films for other production outfits, he would never make this sort of thing on his own. Because otherwise he’s really attempted everything in site from small films to the biggest ones. From Lagaan through TOH an incredible journey to say the least. But there is really nothing left to do in the existing Bollywood system. The smaller Talaash-like stuff is still worthwhile, anything with a true prestige director like Mehra would be ok too, you probably never want to say no to Hirani but really he should now do something defining once again. He has such unique and unquestioned box office credibility at the moment he should put this capital to use for something special. Mogul doesn’t quite cut it for me, nor does MB (for the reasons I just described). But there’s still so much that could be explored in an ambitious production. Really hope he does something of this sort. There’s really nothing left for him to prove otherwise, he can keep adding big hits but he could really be covering new ground.

          • TOH seems a halfway house between a Lagaan type epic and a D3 out and out commercial film (that is just purely box office). The issue is the director – I don’t mind that it’s YRF as if they had an in-house director of ROM’s ability it would be fine. Unfortunately we haven’t seen enough of the good things from VKA to bank on this being an epic film.

This is a bit in the Eklavya field of script it feels and that film was promising but it had VVC as director. There aren’t a pool of directors who have this skill it seems.

            Like

          • I don’t think there is an Eklavya-like danger here but you’re on the money on the Lagaan-D3 thing. The other way to see it is that you can make a masala epic or you can do the more Hollywood low key version. BB was the former. Lagaan is the latter. Both completely appropriately. If you do Lagaan like a masala epic you won’t do as much justice to the subject and the opposite wouldn’t work with BB at all. With TOH the former option has to be chosen as much as possible. You can have the great set pieces and so on (they were working on a huge ship set in Malta at one point) but there has to be masala glue here. Or emotionally pitched at those registers. To be fair you can do this one in somewhat more low key mode as well but then it would have to be a very strong script. In a way this was the issue with D3. Or the reason it didn’t satisfy people like the first two ones. Those are ‘stupid’ films not pretending to be anything more. But here with the more masala script (the two brothers etc) it became harder for the film to do double duty. They couldn’t have gone more masala than they did because that’s not what the genre is about. But by raising these elements they also couldn’t just do business as usual. Again this isn’t just a Yashraj or Acharya problem. Bollywood just doesn’t have people anymore who really understand some of these genres. In the South it’s a very different story. But then Bollywood also refuses to hire people from the South. There’s a reason Aamir worked with the original director for Ghajini! No one in Bombay could have directed Ghajini the way it was meant to be made and we see the results in all the other masala attempts. On that note Yashraj’s Shamshera with Ranbir is a case in point. Hard to pull off ‘designer masala’ (leaving aside the fact that Ranbir seems unsuited for this terrain.. though this might be masala-comedy)!

            Like

          • The political angle notwithstanding, I think Aamir knows he cant invest 1000-1500 cr on production budget for first MB film itself to ensure vfx is not as tacky as Rajamouli or Shankar’s films. Going by the current business scenario of big budget bollywood films, its not a feasible proposition at this point.

There is no other reason to explain why MB gets shelved right after 2.0 teaser gets released. The co-incidence is too convenient to ignore.

            Like

          • When you are trying to mash Lagaan in Acharya/YRF’s overblown masala melodrama style, its difficult to expect the overall texture to be any better than D3.

Only silver lining is that Aamir had supervised the reworking of Acharya’s initial script (that was offered to hrtitk) and then has devoted 2 years fully to the execution of the same. So the narrative may turn out to be better than D3.

BB films had gripping narrative (within the limitations of masala mishmash) – ToH can perhaps turn out to be like that. Stunts may still be like men flying around with tacky vfx work, the dramatic moments may well be reaching heights of melodrama, or the dialogues may be as corny as in southern masala. It is an everything goes scenario when you try to combine the brains of Lagaan, Tashan and Dhoom 3.

  61. @anuragkashyap72 @juniorbachchan Really liked Manmarziyaan. It’s structurally and tonally a very interesting film. In a very precise sense there are Godardian traces in your [Anurag] effort but at another level it is also somewhat reminiscent of Rathnam’s late mode. Even otherwise one of your best films (in some ways it offers an intriguing and instructive contrast with the superb Mukkabaaz). In a longer note perhaps I’ll quibble with the last minute of the film and offer friendly debate on some other aspects of the work. Abhishek, truly appreciated your pause and poise here. A very assured performance where you strike a very delicate balance throughout. Of course I loved all the actors but to my mind Taapsee (who has one of the very significant female performances in Hindi film history here) and you are the film’s contrapuntal forces. Hers drives the energy of the film, she’s electric throughout, Vicky Kaushal wonderfully keeps up with her, but it is ultimately your contained economy that is as necessary to the film, that anchors its wild drives somehow. It’s very difficult to pull off a role where you somehow have to resist the film’s more naturally chaotic energies. And certainly the change of pace, the transitions, are skillfully handled as a directorial matter. There is simply too much else to say here. Ultimately an auteur’s work in a commercial format and therefore equally one that reconfigures everything. A lot to admire but enough to argue with as well. This will have been my shorter preface to that longer note!

In Dangal, Padman and Toilet you have a ‘man’ promoting feminism. It works for indian audience. In SS, you have a girl and her mother fighting for a better ‘free’ life. Such ‘feminist’ stance is hardly acceptable to the indian audience. • One thing I admire about Jeeves is his consistency. Being a great fan is not a crime. Flaws are everywhere and inspite of flaws a film should be a good experience to savour. And making fun of others is not in good taste. It is Jeeves’s goodness that he is not retaliating in the same coin. Make your point but dont make personal comments and make fun of others calling them narrow minded and make other insinuations. The comment shows what you become when others point flaws in your argument.

    • I sort of saw this coming given that they had random shooting schedules even in August. This means they messed up Zero and it will most likely be a flop now regardless of when it releases. I think SRK interfered too much and diluted Anand Rai’s orignal vision, because there were way too many foreign location filming schedules for an Anand Rai film. Delayed SRK movies in the recent past have been ones that are VFX heavy flops (i.e. Ra. 1 and FAN).

Sad, I thought this film would be the one that gives SRK some sort of comeback. Looks like we will have to wait even longer for SRK and Abhishek to bounce back!

Bhansali’s Bajrao Maatani continued it and Sultan would have but Raees shifted. He can no longer do the OSO/Saawariya savagery through the media. A guy like Devgnn seems fearless and happy to take him on.

            Like

          • Yes, OSO was the last time that SRK could dictate terms based on his BO clout and make competition suffer. But hey, that was 10 years back! Since then he had been playing catch up game with his overdose of fake PR news and numbers. And after a while he started delivering so much trash (read HNY) that he soon became irrelevant. Zero will further add to his plight.

Since Badshah (1999), he deliberately chose to stick to that title as his PR alias. Now 20 years later ‘Zero’ will unintentionally get stuck to his name … and perhaps forever. And frankly he derves it. “Only sex and SRK sells in India”, right?

          • It is not like that tonymontana. If you analyse Srk’s career, you’ll find clashes faced by him since early 90’s. He has delivered biggest hits of his career in clashes only. Have you forgotten when he took shit out of Bachchan and Govinda during KKHH vs BMCM clash? JTHJ had a sizeable lead over SOS despite being a crap/ boring movie. Yes, Dilwale had lesser nos compared to BM but still check the opening where it crushed BM..Had the content being good, that would have destroyed BM completely. If you see worldwide boxoffice collection, then Dilwale was a clear winner.

Srk has always faced clashes and there is nothing new or you can’t project it as if its due to lack of Boxoffice clout. And don’t worry about Golmal and Simba releasing around zero..Golmal is releasing on 7th December and Simba won’t come on 28th and thats 100% sure.So relax and enjoy all these film without any bias.

Despite doing its business in Delhi NCR and East Punjab the collections are not really as strong as they should be. In Delhi city its certain multiplexes collecting well and in East Punjab its mainly Gurgaon which is giving close to one third of the business in the circuit.

The first two day busines of Manmarziyan is as follows:

          Friday – 3,25,00,000
          Saturday – 4,75,00,000

    • I can get your feeling totally. Even I do wonder sometimes. He is not that bad an actor, to have (almost) no work these days. There are plenty out there, who are so worse, when compared to him. Yes, we have the Tiger Shroffs and John Abraham donning the Hero’s roles these days, but not that man. To be honest and fair to him, you do feel bad for him.

But having said so, with all due respect to the man, I would also maintain, that though he is a good actor, he really did miss the zing to be cast as a hero, who can single-handedly carry a role and bring success to the movie. No matter how big a fan you are of him, you simply do have to agree to this. Yes, he has the height, the physique and the voice to be a hero, but that extra something, which you need is just not there in him. That is why, even being so long in the industry, he hasn’t been able to carve out a niche for himself! As a result of which the directors can’t put their faith on him totally! Sigh!

But he did have a bright start. With films like Refugee, Guru, Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, he was in the limelight for all the right reasons.

But that didn’t last long. You can blame a number of factors for this.

His decisions – It is a well known fact that Abhishek Bachchan turned down the role played by Saif Ali Khan in the movie Dil Chahta Hai. Not that, saif has made it real big in the industry, but yes he has a better presence, you can say, when compared to Abhishek. Not that just by acting in the movie, would have made Abhishek, a superstar, but yes definitely, a good role there would have surely opened up so many opportunities for him, right at the start of his career. He definitely can rue this one, as a missed opportunity.

His legacy – The legacy that he carries is definitely very hard to bear. Being the only son of Amitabh Bachchan definitely puts added pressure on him. The expectation that everybody has had on him over the years, just due to this fact, has seriously not helped him. To be honest, he has always been shadowed by Senior Bachchan. Also it has to be pointed out that his mother is Jaya Bachchan, a lead-actress of her time, herself. So definitely, not an easy thing having the lead man and lady of Bollywood, as your mother.

His wife – Well, definitely, if you have Aishwarya Rai, as your wife, you will definitely be taken away from the limelight, when you are together (Of course, if you are not Tom Cruise yourself). And that is what has exactly happened with Abhishek Bachchan, I’m afraid. Wherever, he goes around (in Cannes, for example) he is looked upon as ‘the husband of Aishwarya Rai, sadly. Doesn’t really help him when you can’t steal the show on your own and you need your wife’s identity to recognize yourself.

The above points coupled with the one, which I mentioned above (lack of the real personality of a hero, a real showstopper, has really dented Abhishek’s career, I’m afraid.

So these days, we find him doing stuffs like these –

Owning Teams – He owns the ISL Team – Chennaiyin FC and Pro Kabaddi League Team – Jaipur Pink Panthers.

Coaching Football Team – He was recently made the coach of the Crickets Vs Actors Football Match, which they play these days to collect funds. Sadly, here also he could not fit into the team.

Watching Cricket Matches – When the above matches are not happening, he is seen frequently at the Wankhade Stadium cheering for the home teams – India/Mumbai Indians.

That’s sad to see, believe me, for an actor like him… I feel it, really!

      • The main problem has always been the poor choices of projects.

After Bol Bachan, right when he should have made the next step and sign a good solo film he signed D3, H3 and HNY. He was completely side-lined in these films. And when he opted for a single hero project, the choice was AIW. The latter took years in the making and was an awful film.

So, any positive momentum gained from Bol Bachan was completely lost.

There have been some real misfires as well earlier. I can understand his thinking behind signing films like Delhi 6, KHJJS or Players. But what the hell was he doing in films like Game or Drona?

Sarkar Raj was another weird one. The first Sarkar was about building him up to take over his father’s legacy. He should have been the focal point of the 2nd film.

How the Bachans accepted him being sacrificed is still mind boggling. It looked like a complete misfire.

I don’t think it’s a problem of personality. Films like B&B, Guru, Sarkar and Bulffmaster showed that he can work well as a main hero. He had talent. He was lean, tall and looked dashing.

But he has been making the wrong choices. He hasn’t really looked after himself well enough after some point. That unshaven look has not really worked as well. Watch him in AIW and watch him in Bluffmaster. It’s not only about ageing.

        • Completely agree with you on Sarkar Raj: it made no sense, and shows RGV doesn’t even understand what “sequel” or “franchise” means. I can only say that in this case RGC sacrifices the son (and the first Sarkar film) at the altar of the father. While patriarchy’s male victims are far far better off than its female ones on average, this film (perhaps I should say the making of this film) reminds us that they do exist…

The last studios in Mumbai face the inevitability of irrelevance. A look back at their glorious past.

The year was 1953. The city of Bombay ended at Bandra. What is Andheri today was then considered a no-man’s land. On a fine day with clear skies, Kamal Amrohi, then in his 40s, drove down for a survey of the estate that he had been lucky to acquire from a well-wisher. He parked his car near the last habitable spot close to the Holy Spirit Hospital, and, holding his teenage daughter by her hand, followed a narrow trail up a hillock. Surveying the acres of untamed land that lay beyond, he turned to Rukhsar and said, “This is where I will build my studio. This barren land will flourish and bloom like an emperor’s garden.”

Have seen manmarziyan yesterday, last Abhishek film I have seen was bol bachchan in 2012, though he is my favorite, between these two films four films of him have released, according to me they were bad choices by him, I was very disappointing. Now, come to manmarziyan, it is zero error movie, & masterpiece. Everybody associated with the movie have given their best, be it Amit trivedi, Anurag Kashyap, Kanika dhillon & star cast. From very first scene film is absorbing, along with lead characters, each character is remarkable be it Darji, Abhishek’s mom, marriage beuro agent, dancing girls etc, & Anurag has extacted brilliant performance from each character, camera work is such exceptional that Amritsar becomes the main protagonist of the movie. If you omit a.r. raheman, Amit trivedi is the best music director we have right now. He is sheer genius, & delivered the best album of 2018. All the songs are excellent. Amit trivedi & Anurag combo is the most exciting combo. Shelly’s lyrics are awesome. Now comes to main lead actors, Vicky Kaushal is extremely talented & versatile, right now, he is going through the golden phase of his career, taapsee Pannu is like volcano, her energy level is unmatchable. She is new find of Bollywood. Now, comes to Abhishek bachchan, he is coming back after 2 years, never have doubt about his capability & acting talent. He has given many memorable performance in past, I have always reservation about his selection of movies in past, many films he has done in the past are avoidable, but for this time he has selected right movie & director & as Robbie he has given stupendous performance, one of the best from him, he is nearer to perfect in this movie. On the whole it is masterpiece from genius called Anurag Kashyap.

‘I am taking about Indian vs Asoka clash being only clash that he lost’
Such short memory, He lost many in 90s.
    After 2000-
What about 1) Dilwale vs BM
    2) Indian vs Asoka?
And If one considers CE vs OUTIMD clash, then JHMS and Toilet was clash too.
There are so many movies did well like Aitraaz, SOS while releasing with Srk movies.
while all of these Srk movies were always bigger release size, bigger budget and very high stakes. In those terms, SOS was clean hit while JTHJ wasnt. Aitraaz was more profitable than VZ.

    From 90s-
    1) Guddu and Oh Darling Ye Hai India vs Hum Dono (August 11, 1995) – This remains the only instance of two SRK movies releasing on the same date. Alas, neither could compete with ‘Hum Dono’ – a movie starring Rishi Kapoor and Nana Patekar – which clocked up Rs 6.06 crore in India. In response, ‘Guddu’ could manage only Rs 2.54 crore, while ‘Oh Darling Ye Hai India’ fared even worse, totting up just Rs 1.77 crore.

    2) English Babu Desi Mem vs Bandit Queen (January 26, 1996) – After the massive success of ‘DDLJ’, in October 1995, SRK had become a force to reckon with, but he soon came unstuck when the much-hyped ‘English Babu Desi Mem’ tanked at the box-office. (Rs 3.78 crore). In contrast, the off-beat and controversial ‘Bandit Queen’ set the cash registers ringing and earned Rs 14 crore in India.

    3) Ye Lamhe Judaai Ke vs Masti (April 9, 2004) –
Perhaps no clash between movies starring big stars has been as one-sided as this one in last 17 years. SRK was at the pinnacle of his career when ‘YLJK’ released and halted his imperious march at the box-office. The movie had been in the making for close to 8 years and it expectedly looked stale. But given the fact that SRK was on a roll – his last three movies had been hits – trade expected ‘YLJK’ to pull through. As it happened, it turned out to be the biggest disaster of SRK’s career. The film managed a mind-bogglingly paltry Rs 57 lakh. The multi-starrer ‘Masti’ was lapped up by the audience and hoovered up Rs 20.28 crore.

    4) Maya Memsaab vs Waqt Hamara Hai-
On July 2 1993, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar clashed for the first time at the box office. Maya Memsaab was a woman oriented niche art movie with star cast toplined by Farooq Sheikh and Raj Babbar whereas Waqt Hamaara Hai was as commercial as it gets, also known to bring together the hit pairing of Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty for the first time on the silver screen. Akshay Kumar starrer won the battle here. But then you can’t really call Maya Memsaab a Shah Rukh Khan starrer.

And if Going by BOI’s definition of stardom, BMCM opened way bigger than KKHH. Also, Mohabbatein opened less than Mission Kashmir.

That makes Fallout Tom Cruise’s second-biggest domestic earner behind Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds ($235m in 2005). Maybe a Netflix show before the next film is the way to go for Abhishek?

It must be the worst feeling as an actor that your film and performance gets praised but it doesn’t translate at the box office.

        https://www.bollymoviereviewz.com/2018/09/manmarziyan-review.html

On the whole it’s got good reviews. The 07-12 phase has done permanent damage on Abhishek at least commercially speaking as a solo star. As an actor he’s still got it.

SRK is still in a better position. History is on his side as a box office star. Zero is obviously crucial as a standalone film but following TOH and 2.0 it’s even more critical he comes out of it with at least 200 Cr. Otherwise he’ll be continuing his descent at a quicker pace.

  84. It hurts him more to have taken a break around 3 years back right when he was going through a bad phase. Makes a comeback even tougher. Ask Akshaye Khanna.

The best thing would have been to remain relevant and hope something like Bol Bachan comes up eventually and then build again from it while avoiding the previous mistakes.

I don’t think John Abraham is a model of great choices in any way. But look at what he did. He kept signing films and kept sticking to a genre where he can be accepted. There were loads of flops out there but he kept working, remained constant and relevant until something eventually worked. Consistency (even if does not translate into advancing too much) is much better than a huge downwards slide.

This is what Abhishek was doing as well in his pre-2005 phase. He kept trying until success came. Once you stop being relevant, it becomes way tougher except if you are a huge star.

It’s going to be difficult to come back now. I hope he makes the right choices now.

    • This is no fairytale ending IMO. But seriously MM is a good watch but it’s not something Indian audiences lap up at all. I wouldn’t blame them too much either. The ball really is in the film industry’s court not the other way round. There’s a history of good films that don’t find the audience they deserve and vice versa but if you are seeking the box office results you need to make those choices and sacrifices. Critics have given a thumbs up – what more can they do plus social media.

And John Abraham is a perfect example. The guys a totally wooden actor who has found (temporary) success. He’ll not all of a sudden an A list superstar. He’s found a niche space to play in. Abhishek can totally do this but I seriously doubt it as if it were to happen it in all likelihood would have already (that’s the statistician in me speaking).

      • I think the right comparison point is Shoojit Sirkar’s October starring Varun Dhawan — a hugely popular ‘star’ according to box office portals. That film opened with collections of 4.25 crores but had good growth over the weekend, which implies more favorable reception. But the key point to note is the opening — not too different from Manmarziyan!

It ended up with collections of 39 crores. That’s the upper limit of such films.

        Like

        • Yes very fair comparison. October had a good first week (north of 25 Cr) but didn’t sustain beyond so I do agree such films have a ceiling and can be very ‘personal’ IMO – rather polarized in audience reception. MM’s first week will be 20-22 Cr range max probably and I think 35 Cr is (like Marcus corrected me) looking like a tall order. 30 Cr will be it’s likely result.

But MM has had a lot more favourable reviews & media on it compared to October!

          Like

          • yes I agree, hard to see it go beyond 30. With hardly any improvement on Sun don’t think there’s any possibility of real stability over the weekdays.

          • I think it’s a failure of economics rather than the genre. There are enough data points for filmmakers to budget their films accordingly. If one is aware of the upper limit for a particular genre, then that sets the budget — the remuneration for stars and everyone else.

If the film ends up making more than the upper limit, which in 99% of the cases will not happen, then everyone should get a cut out of the profits. That way everyone’s happy because no one loses money.

            Liked by 1 person

          • “..failure of economics..” : Absolutely, and ergo my point about silver spoons and estates. If JrB finds himself boxed in the sub-40cr BO category, no one will pay him more than a basic compensation for his appearance. That might perhaps be 2-3cr I assume. Now, he definitely ought to be making more than that just by managing his Dad’s 1000cr portfolio (ie his future estate). So why in the world would he spend all the time chasing those 2-3crs. Even if he were to produce the movie, given all the risks, he just might double that compensation. Whereas a most conservative 5% return on his estate gives him 50cr every year.

But more importantly, these celebrities make money in spades through a few one-time events; and squander it all just because they have no clue on how to manage it. BigB learnt it the hard way by squandering all his wealth away in the 90s, precisely because he did not manage it all himself. He might not even know how to manage, and perhaps even be asking JrB to help him do that now. Fortunately for him, he just has to sneeze and he gets at least 20-25 lakhs for doing so. Every second of his time will fetch him a return; so he will keep standing in front of cameras till he can actually manage to stand on his feet! And he will keep enhancing that estate in the process, bit by bit by bit. But the management of the entire sum requires time and talent.

Why doesn’t Aamir sign films right n left anymore? Especially now after the humongous returns he received from Dangal and SS? He has at least 500crs in the kitty (conservatively, perhaps much more). Just to manage all that takes a lot of time. Even he understands that nothing short of a 50cr return on every movie of his is worth his time now.

SRK has managed it shrewdly, and so he does not care if a movie makes 100cr or not. He may have an internal ego that remains to be satiated, but all his energy aside, he too might not have motivation anymore.

Sallu on the other hand makes it and blows it and has perhaps the most need to keep churning these potboilers for some more time.

To turn up on sets day in day out, act as though he cares not just in front of people he meets but do double duty also in front of the camera. Must be hard work whilst thinking about all that interest dad is earning on his estate.

  89. Smaller Films Opening Weekend 2018 – Manmarziyan 8th
    Monday 17 September 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Manmarziyan is the eighth highest opening this year if we look at the smaller films this year. The costs of these films below are generally between 25- 40 crore mark with Raazi and Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety going towards the upper end and Hitcki below the 25 mark.

Manmarziyan was a film aimed at the youth and many of the films on this list are films which dont have much for the youth like 102 Not Out, Hichki and even Raazi for that matter but collections of Manmarziyal are less. Raazi was never going to happen but it should have been better than 102 Not Out and Hichki on a worse case scenario.

The opening weekend of the smaller films released this year are as follows.

    1. Raazi – 32,72,00,000

    2. Stree – 31,58,00,000

  94. Manmarziyan Falters On Monday – Mitron And Love Sonia Almost Out
    Tuesday 18 September 2018 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Manmarziyan faltered on Monday as it collected in the 1.90-2 crore nett range. The drop is 40% from the first day and that is too much for a film which opened with such low numbers. The film will no do well but is a little better than the other two ventures of the director this year. The web series Sacred Games was a disaster while Mukkabaaz was not better as it collected a little 10 crore nett at the box office..

The director has an awful record with bad films galore but has still somehow managed to get 15 films as director even though none have gone beyond the 30 crore nett mark. In fact if Manmarziyan makes 25 crore nett it will be the second one to go over 25 crore nett.

The small town bug seems to have been hit with Manmarziyan but if the characterization is still urban how will that relate with the audience as these characters dont belong to a small city be it Amritsar or Aurangabad. The film would have probably failed even if these chracters were set in Mumbai but at least then the film is a more truer to the audience. Its looking a 20.50-21 crore nett first week for the film and it remains to be seen how much it will drop on the second Friday.

The first weekend busines of Manmarziyan is as follows

    Friday – 3,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 4,75,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 5,75,00,000 apprx

  96. Batti Gul Meter Chalu would be looking to release on approximately 2200 to 2500 screens in India, and the potential of these screens would be around Rs 33 to 35 crore at normal ticket rates. As the movie releases on a non-holiday, we expect the film to open in the range of Rs 7.50 to 8.50 crore in India. A major contributor to this film should be the metros as Shahid Kapoor is a popular entity in these places, however as it has been proved in the past, Shraddha Kapoor too has consistently ensured reasonable opening at the mass belts. An opening below the Rs 7.50 crore mark would be extremely disappointing, but given the success of music, it is certain that the movie will open in the above-mentioned range. With a positive word of mouth, the biz would escalate over the weekend and the film would pack a solid punch with weekend collections around the Rs 30.00 crore mark in India.

  98. 90s Rewind: Katrina Kaif’s sister Isabelle Kaif and Sooraj Pancholi to recreate Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi song in Time To Dance
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkSep 18, 2018 – 12:30 pm IST

We all know about the much talked about debut of the sister of Katrina Kaif, Isabelle Kaif. It will be the second Bollywood film of Sooraj Pancholi. The film in question, Time To Dance, as the name suggests is all about dancing. And while it is expected to feature some interesting tracks, recent buzz is that the makers are planning to take us back to the 90s, the Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi days.

The rewind to the 90s is because Isabelle Kaif and Sooraj Pancholi are all set to recreate the number ‘Adayein Bhi Hai’. Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, was a rom-com featuring Pooja Bhatt and Aamir Khan and the said track featured the two of them. As for the remake, we hear that a few contemporary elements will be added to resonate with the current generation. From new lyrics to a contemporary style, the new version is expected to feature some interesting twists.

If recent reports are to be believed, the leads, Isabelle and Sooraj have already shot for the song in Dover in Kent. Furthermore, we hear that the film’s director Stanley D’Costa himself choreographed for the number. For the uninitiated, Stanley has helped Remo D’Souza in some of his best dance works.

Besides this song, another important track in the film will have Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh lending voice for it. Reports have it that this song, composed by Tanishk Bagchi, will be picturized on Sooraj Pancholi.

Hunt for villain is still on. My guess – Ranveer Singh.

The stakes are very high for Aamir here. His next big release will probably be in 2022. He needs a BIGgie here to remain on top. Anything less than 300Cr would be a disaster with this big budget movie. Of course to recover its cost of Rs 300 Cr (as per wikipedia – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thugs_of_Hindostan), it needs to do 500Cr to breakeven. 600 Cr will give it a HIT status.

Most of the Fans here are talking of 500 Cr at best from Hindi market. I don’t think it will do.

South Indian Market will be slightly better but would not be enough to be a game changer.

In all probability the makers are looking at China market but then we know that Chinese distributors hardly pay to indian producers. They may give a bit more as ToH as Aamir ho is the only relevant Indian star in China. So that market has to be discounted in terms of major recovery.

So after Hindi market, it will be satellite rights and US/UK/Australia market that has to do very good business.

Overall this is the riskiest Aamir khan project. As Aamir’s fan, i am keeping my fingers crossed. It wont be easy at all.

    • I am a bit disappointed with Jayshah as he tried to digress by resorting to comparing with 2point0. The success of ToH has nothing to do with 2point0. So why bring the comparision dude?

I am ok with Marcus questioning the authenticity of Wiki claims on the cost of ToH. WIll be happy to know the cost of ToH from a creditable source.

Marcus suggested the sale of ToH to Netflix at a huge price. This indeed is a good news. However we all know that these satellite prices are subject to theatrical outcome.

        • My intention was not to jack up the price. I will go with 200Cr.

Even at a cost of Rs 200 Cr, ToH needs to do a theatrical business of 350Cr to recover, 400+ Cr to be a Hit considering the best scenarios in satellite and overseas sales.

I never said its not possible.

[This is a wonderful piece and list. One can argue with the rankings but I like many of the surprises here. In any case any list with Iruvar on top is always acceptable!]

[Also I think Ratnam’s is the kind of oeuvre where one will forever be redoing these rankings at different points in life. Of course Iruvar should always remain on top!]

      Like

    • Good list and justification by Rangan but I think my list would be easily different. All recent years and weaker films are rated higher and movies like Roja are literally at the bottom. Roja deserves much higher rank. Similarly Nayakan should be #1 and Iruvar #2. I can understand Iruvar but Kannathil Muthhamital above Nayankan is not right for me. Similarly many others but good to read the list.

      Like

      • I’ve also somehow never been a fan of Roja, not least because the nationalist tone at points seems to be alien to Ratnam’s world. On the rest I’d also put Kannathil.. over Nayagan. My favorite Ratnam works, again in no particular order except for Iruvar:

        1)Iruvar
        2)Alaipayuthey
        3)Dil Se
        4)Kannathil Muthamittal

I’d probably add Raavan to this list but haven’t seen it since the initial release and don’t want to do so without revisiting it.

A lot of this is also about what Ratnam one grew up with. So Mouna Raagam is one of the central films for those who were following him in the 80s. Or for that matter Nayagan. I tend to prefer ‘late’ Ratnam in general. Post-Roja/Thiruda thiruda I find all of his films interesting at one level or the other.

        • I like Alaipayuthey a lot as well. Its very surprising which Rangan admits himself when preferring O Kadhal Kanmani over it.

          13. O KADHAL KANMANI (2015)

I know. I know. Most of you are shaking your heads that this comes ahead of Alaipayuthey. (But then, you’ve already gone “WTF!” a few times by now, right?)

          ***

Rest about Roja, its important enough film which resonated all over the country in every dubbed language. Mani was already a big name after Nayakan and then other hits and then went ahead to a make a movie with unknown star cast and actually introduced the terrorist angles in movies. It was very well done with fantastic aid in AR Rahman. Out of 23 odd films, I would not dare keep it at 20. That’s crazy!

          • In the 80s Ratnam is I think a revolutionary commercial director, easily one of the most influential ones in Indian (commercial) history. But the truly ‘auteurist’ Ratnam emerges later. And unsurprisingly it is also here that his box office record becomes much more patchy (in fact he fails most of the time in this period except when he’s explicitly trying to get a success take off pressure from a previous failure or two, this is not to say he isn’t looking for success elsewhere but he’s been in the business long enough to know what’s really risky and what isn’t!).

On Roja it’s the major Ratnam I like least barring Geethanjali (which I really dislike!).

            Like

          • On Roja – It is well made movie..your objection is to politics?

OK Kanmani was also good but the bar was set low where they started..

            Like

          • Ok Kanmani was alright, by Ratnam’s standards. Enjoyable enough though. On Roja it’s not just the politics (though I find it more problematic than usual given all of his concerns throughout his career), I’m just not a great fan. For instance I don’t much like the second half of Bombay either but the first half is superb. Beautifully shot, wonderful intimacy and so on. Roja to my mind doesn’t do these things as well though in fairness it’s also on the cusp between an older and as I see it later Ratnam (whereas Bombay announces this second phase). Not a bad film, it’s perfectly fine, I just prefer most other Ratnam films.

  123. Bhatt’s earlier films were the best ones. He was at his best in serious films and flawed characters.

Some of those serious films were not really perfect but had substance and some really realistic moments.

I would take films like Thikana, Kabzaa, Lahu ke Do Rang or Tamanna, Awaargi, Sir, Gunaah and Angaray over films like DHKMN or Aashiqui. The latter were run of the mill romantic films.

    • 100% agree. Over the last few months I re-visited Kabzaa, Thikana, and Janam, and there was something so “true” about those. No one else (then or now) has explored a certain kind of Bombay “angst” better than Bhatt did in his films. LOL, these days the Anil Kapoor character from Thikana would have a six-pack and seem as well put together as the politician he was trying to take down!

      • Also let’s not forget Naam. The only convincing revisiting of the Deewar terrain I’ve ever seen in Hindi.

        Liked by 2 people

        • Yes that is true — no one, NO ONE, in the history of Hindi cinema, has done “lost youth” better than Sanju. It’s also an intelligent re-do of Deewar (in the latter film, what is remarkable about Vijay is that he doesn’t grow, or change, there is a sense that he emerges fully formed; in fact he shares this with the protagonist of Trishul — why this is remarkable is that the characters are otherwise quite Shakespearean, recognizably so, yet they are “static” in the way that the heroes of the epic tradition are. Can’t think of a more perfect balance (by contrast, consider Alain Delon in Le Samourai, a superb example of stasis but he isn’t a Shakespearean character in that sense)), because what Bhatt does is “transfer” the Deewar of Vijay to the terrain of a raw youth. This terrain is different enough that any notion of staleness is avoided.

          • My favourites are Daddy, Arth and Saaransh in the serious terrain and DHKMN and HHRPK in the lighter terrain.

          • Arth is fantastic, one of the very very few romantic films for adults …. fantastic performances by the two ladies (not an Azmi fan but this is one of her best; Smita Patil as ever sets the screen on fire)…

            Like

          • This is a wonderful comment. And yes Bhatt in a way downsizes Deewar. Removes some of the mythic or at least high Romantic underpinnings of the latter. He also infuses into it his own brand of lower middle class urban angst. I like the film’s Hong Kong detour less but in a sense he’s prophetic here given all the Thailand to Dubai escapades that became so commonplace in a later age. It also helps to get rid of the stickler policeman of the older film and replace him with the relatively ‘ordinary’ witness-brother.

            Liked by 1 person

          • The “ordinary brother” or sibling seems to have been a recurring motif for Bhatt during this period — Sanju has to redeem this (compromised and complicit) brother in Kabzaa; there’s Smita P in Thikana as well…

        • The article posted already had listed Arth, Janam, Saraansh, Naam, Kaash, Sadak, Zakm, DHKMN and Daddy among his bests. But I would still pick films like Thikana, Kabzaa, Awaargi, Tamanna or Gunaah above the likes of DHKMN or Aashiqui.

Another thing is that Bhatt’s films had great music. He has worked with various music directors but the music in his films were always melodious.

this article is fairly symptomatic. A number of articles despite the poor box office showing have been quite complementary. Either pretending that the box office reception is fine or talking about it in mild terms. Normally this sort of benefit isn’t something Abhishek gets (even when his films actually did well the box office story was always covered uncharitably). Do think he’s helped himself with this film, more than I would have thought earlier. While nothing can make up for the box office, specially in his situation, do believe (not just referring to the articles here but a lot of stuff I’ve picked up in social media and then anecdotally) that for the people who’ve seen the film this is the most they’ve liked him probably since the Guru days or something. I’d even go further and say that the last time he might have ‘appealed’ at this level was BM (because Guru was a grand sort of performance-oriented thing). Again all of this is not to underestimate the box office but the response here has really been way more positive than I expected and the film’s box office fortunes haven’t impacted that narrative. He has four films lined up back to back (MM was the first), let’s see what the rest are about.
