  2. There are some striking moments in the film, but they remain moments: a soiree with Ashok Kumar and other popular stars of the 40s is particularly lovely. Dugal, as Manto’s pillar of strength, shines, and Bhasin’s Shyam is vivid and alive.

The same cannot be said of Nawazuddin’s playing of Manto. There is a gap, a curious distance, between the vision and the execution, and much of the film, including Nawaz, resides in it. There is no other actor who could have done this role; he looks the part—crumpled kurta, thick-framed glasses, stained teeth, and sounds just right too. The wry humour, the bitterness and frustration, qualities which permeate the author’s work, are only visible in flashes, though. The outline is there, but the filling is patchy. You keep wanting more.

Both from him. And the film.

Wo isliye bahar aaya kyunki koi critics ne likha nahi uspe. Agar uski picture release karte, toh usko bhi barbaad kar dete critics. Jaise barbaad kar rahe hai filmon ko. Isliye toh Netflix aa raha hai. (It came out because critics had no say it in. If it was released as a movie, the critics would’ve ruined it, just the way they are ruining films. That’s why there’s Netflix.)

  7. Batti Gul Meter Chalu Has Ordinary Opening
    Friday 21 September 2018 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Batti Gul Meter Chalu has take a very ordinary opening of around 20% and this is on a partial holiday for Muharram. If the holiday was not there then it would be a poor start for the film. Despite having a boost of Muhharam the opening will not be among the top ten this year even though its one of the films this year to get a holiday start.

The film is similar to the Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet Ek Prem Katha and also by the same director. That film was about the toilet issue facing some of the smaller towns across India and this is about the electricity problem in many towns. But in reality the audience does not really care much for social issues and are looking for entertainment. Toilet Ek Prem Katha had a well itched out love story which could clearly be seen in the trailers.

Here in Batti Gul Meter Chalu there is a younger cast than Toilet Ek Prem Katha but there was no love story in the trailers which just keeps the youth away.

The film will need to show upward momentum and this is despite coming off a holiday and which will not be easy. The film needed a double digit opening day number but that is not going to happen going up the morning numbers unless there is a miraculous jump in numbers.

Manto which was supposed to release was a last minute postponemnet due to an issue between the distributors and UFO.

The distributor maintains a healthy relation with Karan Johar, whose every second film is distributed by Thadani under his banner, AA Films. 11. Looks like Salman Khan and controversies run hand in hand as the superstar is always surrounded by some scandal or the other every now and then. Recenty, Filmmaker-choreographer Remo D’Souza opened out the failure of Race 3 (despite lifetime earnings of 169 crores), and it appears that Dabangg Khan didn’t really take that well.

According to recent reports flowing in, Remo D’Souza would no longer be directing Race 4, which was one of his most awaited upcoming project for fans. The choreographer has been removed from the project, owing to the differences and disappointment he had recently expressed, which seem to have not been liked by Salman.

A source close to Bollywood Hungama revealed, “Remo was constantly ‘directed’ by Salman Khan during the shooting of Race 3. In fact the entire cast including Anil Kapoortook directions from Salman. Remo could feel the project going out of control. But there was nothing he could do about it. When Salman Khan takes charge you either comply or you leave. Kabir Khan chose never to work with Salman after Tubelight was ghost directed by Salman. Remo also won’t be returning for Race 4.”

Remo at the press conference of Dance Plus’ season 4 had shared that he has learnt a lesson and is never going to work on a “Half-Baked” script again. “As a director, I feel bad because I wasn’t able to take that film to a landmark where I have imagined before starting a film. At the same time, I think whatever responsibility had given to me, I tried to do my level best to make that film better and I did everything as per my capability,” he further shared.

With Oscar season around the corner, it will be interesting to see which movies are battling out to make it as India’s Official entry for Oscar.

Although the official list will be out on Saturday, and if reports are to be believed Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, Bhansali’s Padmaavat and Manto directed by Nandita Das with several others, are running to make it as Official entry at Oscars.

Reportedly there are 28 films contending for top spot, which includes Padman, October, Gali Guleiyan, Love Sonia and 102 not out, to name few.

Marathi movies Bogada, Nude and Assamese movie Village Rockstar and others are among the regional movies.

Last year, Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton was an official entry from India but couldn’t make it to the nomination.

  15. Manmarziyan has flopped at the box office as it collected 20.50 crore nett in its first week. The film had low weekend and then dropped on Monday with another noticeable drop coming on Wednesday though Thursday managed to show some gains as the evenings jumped as it is a holiday on Friday.

Manmarziyan may get a little boost on Friday due to Muharram but there is no hope for the film as the collections on Wednesday were bad and any boost coming is just holiday affect.

    • Nice to see the craziness continue at the BOI end. A film which couldn’t capitalize over the first weekend with all the buzz and great reviews and so on, which couldn’t even remain stable on Mon is suddenly getting a ‘boost’ Thu night because of some sort of partial holiday on Fri? Gimme a break! Yes Thu collections were best after Mon but doubt it means anything at this point. If this film can show something at this very low level over the second weekend it might get to 30 (rather than the 25 that seems likely at the moment). That’s about it.

      • he’s always had a good reputation as a producer. He hasn’t done much but I’ve heard this before. Kashyap in some of the interviews praised him a great deal for his business sense. Balki earlier did with Paa as well. They obviously expected more out of MM but they didn’t budget it that way.

          • agree. And the statement that it’s not ok if it changes the narrative (hence he wouldn’t be for changes in Udta Punjab) but was ok with slight cuts that didn’t change the film (MM) is a distinction without a difference. We can’t litigate this stuff. Whatever the filmmaker shows is his or her priority. And of course these things DO make a difference otherwise at least a serious filmmaker wouldn’t show this sort of thing. The smoking is there for a reason. If one wants to be diplomatic and not create trouble, if one wants to play it safe one can without actually taking a position. One can evasive or say one wasn’t involved in the decision, all sorts of things that actors do regularly anyway (for instance when they’re questioned on political issues). But taking an actual stance and defending this sort of thing is inexcusable. Unfortunately this British era law still survives, governments from left to right have always left it in place for their own cynical ends and we’ve seen the results from time to time. Even otherwise this is absurd. If we use the ‘causing offense’ logic literally any and everything could cause offense to someone. Art or even meaningful entertainment is the ‘right to offend’. otherwise it isn’t worth much.

  23. Stree Super Strong – Manmarziyan Down
    Saturday 22 September 2018 11.15 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Stree is heading for another strong week as it collected 1.50 crore nett on its fourth Friday. The film got benefit of Muharram which pushed collections a little higher and meaning it is just 25% lower than last Friday. It has gone to 112 crore nett now

The film looks like it can go to 125 crore nett but a lot will depend on where Saturday and Sunday land as the growth could be limited on Saturday due to holiday bump up on Friday.. The collections of Stree till date are as follows.

    First Week – 59,31,00,000

    Week Two – 34,46,00,000

    Week Three – 16,75,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 1,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,12,02,00,000 apprx

Manmarziyan also got the benefit of Muharram but collections are down for this one. The film has collected around 75-80 lakhs nett on its second Friday which is 75% down from day one and that too on Muharram. Take out the holiday factor and collections are easily down over 80%.

Manmarziyan has collected around 21.25 crore till date. This film may also found it hard to make much ground on Saturday. The collections of Manmarziyan till date are as follows.

    Week One – 20,50,00,000

    Friday – 80,00,000

    TOTAL – 21,30,00,000

    Saturday 22 September 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Batti Gul Meter Chalu had a low opening day as it collected 6.25-6.50 crore nett on day one and these collections came on Muharran which would have boosted collections by 20-30% so real value could be around 5 crore nett but that will be determined by where the film heads on Saturday and Sunday.

    .

Manto which had release problems managed to make it just in time but collected just 45-50 lakhs nett. Here also the real value is lower and though as the film is mainly for high end multiplexes it could get some growth on Saturday. But still from this starting pointing it does not have much of a chance at the box office.

In DADDY, however, he displays great control over proceedings. A tight film of just about 90 minutes and you get a great insight into Arun Gawli’s life. He succeeds in not making this an art-house bore but a live, throbbing film and covers Gawli’s life from 1979 to 2012.

The film is fantastically shot and Bombay is absorbed through the naturalistic lenses of Jessica Cagney and captures the muck, grime, and the grungy lives in Agripada, Chembur, Chinchpoli, and Dongri. If cameras could talk, one might consider DADDY to be a proof. There’s not a single sun-lit shot in the entire movie. Everything is muckier and soaked with dust or rain-water. This is not the romantic version of Bombay in monsoons but Bombay seen through rain waters seeping into the chawls and brimming with lives of chawl members: Bombay with all its flaws.

An emaciated Nishikant Kamat is great as the stubborn but corrupt cop Vijaykar. Rampal is passable as Gawli in the acting department but good prosthetic work on him with that nose job.

The makers recently announced that the film will release on November 29th. Shankar and his team can release the film as per the plan only if they receive the final VFX output by October 15th. With nothing much to do, Shankar is just waiting for the arrival of the final draft of the VFX work.

Aamir Khan who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ has reportedly started working on his next project. Aamir is known for concentrating on one film at a time and hasn’t signed any film after ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’. Aamir who was last seen in ‘Dangal’ based on the Phogat sisters, which released in 2016, played a small role in Zaira Wasim starrer ‘Secret Superstar’ which released in 2017. Speculations were rife about Aamir being a part of a magnum opus which would be an adaptation of ‘Mahabharata’ talks of which seem to not be moving forward.

However, the latest buzz is that Aamir has given his nod for a series based on Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela. Reports suggest that Aamir will be portraying the role of the godman while Alia Bhatt has agreed to play the role of his secretary Ma Anand Sheela. As per reports, the film which is based on the life of, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, popularly known as Osho will be helmed by director Shakun Batra.

While the bar has been set high with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘Sacred Games’, the online streaming giant Netflix is reportedly looking up to scale their reach and subscriber base in the country. ‘Sacred Games’ written by Varun Grover, Smita Singh and Vasant Nath has put Netflix’s Indian Originals on the map. The web series went on to garner praises, not just from the audiences but also from eminent personalities from the fraternity. ‘Sacred Games’ is all set to return for the second season, the announcement of which was made by Netflix on Friday, September 21.

          • WWC did not really dig into the sex-cult status of Rajneesh’s ashrams (Pune or Oeregon). They just hinted at it with a few cuts. Anyways, IF Aamir indeed does this then Salman can do a biopic on the Iskcon founder! That guy was as big a male chauvinist as Salman is, there there is bound to be a connect.

On a related note, Salim Khan has commissioned a biopic on Salman and rumor is that he is ghost-writing it himself. Was bound to happen after Hirani’s Sanju …

          • And since it seems like a toss between Mogul and Osho for Aamir after ToH, the commonality is that both celebrities were perverts hiding behind bhajan and spirituality. I think Aamir wants to play a pervert onscreen for some weird reason …

    • It is an optimistic report. The plain reality is that if the rest of the vfx work does not get delivered by Oct 15 deadline, Shankar will have to postpone the release date. They have conceived this project to too much external dependencies and dont have much control over it. Am glad MB is in the back-burner now for Aamir.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Batti Gul Meter Chalu showed limited growth of around 15-20% but that was expected as the film was boosted by the partial holiday on day one. The film probably had a 1 crore nett boost on the first day so in real this jump is around 35-40%.

The collections still remain low but it still has an outside chance if Sunday can grow well and the film can go to double digits which can mean decent weekday holds. The two day business of the film is 13.50 crore nett. The business of the film in the first two days is as follows.

    Friday – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 7,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 13,50,00,000 apprx

Manto is poor at the box office. the film managed to grow 50% on day two but is not going anywhere as numbers are too low. It needed to double up at least on day two just for some respectable numbers.

The first two collections of Manto are as follows

    Friday – 45,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 70,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,15,00,000 apprx

  53. Netflix at this point understands the huge untapped market they have in India and will be v interested to launch an original series with an A-lister at this point. Their head honchos have been seen sucking up to Srk and Aamir at regular intervals. While launching web series with names like Kashyap, Motwane, Saif, Madhavan or Abhishek is a start, what they need is an A-lister starring series to make in-depth penetration in India. Aamir seems to understand this (going by the rumors on webseries on MB or Osho). He knows he can get away with controversial stuff more easily if its online content. And Netflix will be willing to shell out large amounts of money to get Aamir on board.

Did not expect much of a comeback with films like manmarziyan or super 30 in hritik’s case. But JA had pulled a real surprise with back to back hits in parmanu and satyamev jayate.

Stree is keeping up with Raazi and will get to 125 cr. Batti gul may get to 40 cr, and same holds true for next releases like sui daaga, badhai ho etc. Business will be down in next 6 weeks leading to diwali.

2point0 to release in Nov 2018; Trailer on Diwali

A lot of fans were disappointed with the presentation of Akshay Kumar in the teaser. However the source confirms that 2.0 would be incomplete without Akshay Kumar. “Akshay has shot for more than 60 days and has a screen-time almost similar to Rajinikanth. His character has purposely been kept under-wrap because the makers want to surprise the audience with the evilness of the character. Just like The Dark Knight was a Batman film wherein Joker the major USP’s, this one too is a film about Chitti, with Akshay’s character as the USP. We assure that the fans won’t be disappointed with Akshay’s presentation in the film. In-fact, the director has shot a stylish entry sequence with the Bollywood superstar on a jogging track,” concluded the source.

“The teaser was just an introduction to the world of 2.0. As things stand today, the team will launch a theatrical trailer on Diwali, and unlike the teaser, this one would be launched at a grand event in the presence of Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Shankar, Amy Jackson and the entire team of 2.0. The trailer will give an insight about the storyline of the film.”

“During the course of conversation regarding parliamentary elections, she categorically told her son two things he should never do in future,’ Fotedar recalled, going on to reveal what the first one was. “She said: ‘Do not ever bring Teji’s son – Amitabh Bachchan – into electoral politics’.”

Indira’s aide claims that Rajiv had heard out his mother in ‘disbelief’, without uttering a word. Fotedar added that when Amitabh was given a Congress ticket in the 1984 Lok Sabha polls, he could understand Indira’s reasons for keeping the actor out, ‘but since Rajivji was adamant I left it at that.’ According to Fotedar, Indira had also advised Rajiv to keep Madhavrao Scindia, the former maharaja of Gwalior, at arm’s length.

ToH is made at a cost of 200-250 CR.
2point0 is made at 450-500 CR

They need to do 500+ Cr / 300+ Cr nett resp. in Hindi to be HIT assuming other markets for each do well.

Let’s revisit the boxoffice performance of Baahubali 2 in Hindi

How Baahubali 2 became the biggest film of 2017: A look back at the SS Rajamouli film’s earth-shattering box office performance

Indian cinema can be divided into two eras – pre Baahubali and post Baahubali. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion not just created a storm at the box office but also changed the way we look at our own films. This SS Rajamouli magnum opus made 2017 a historic year and we aren’t surprised. The film, which collected more than Rs 1700 crore (all versions), had a box office journey worth taking note. As they say, every drop counts. This Prabhas-Rana Daggubati starrer had the biggest opening and its Hindi version has become the highest grosser in Bollywood too.

    #Baahubali2 [dubbed Hindi version]
    BENCHMARKS…
    Crossed ₹ 50 cr: Day 2
    ₹ 100 cr: Day 3
    ₹ 150 cr: Day 4
    ₹ 200 cr: Day 6
    ₹ 250 cr: Day 8
    ₹ 300 cr: Day 10
    ₹ 350 cr: Day 12
    ₹ 400 cr: Day 15
    ₹ 450 cr: Day 20
    ₹ 475 cr: Day 24
    ₹ 500 cr: Day 34
    India biz.

But Baahubali wasn’t made in one day. This team of creative stalwarts have taught an important lesson to Bollywood, the biggest filmmaking industry in the world. It taught the Hindi film fraternity, why its time we look beyond the Khans and Kapoors, and instead of giving them a major share in profits, need to divert that budget towards polishing our own films. This Telugu franchise gave us lessons on why a film can have equally strong women characters, can be absolutely story-driven, can give references to our mythology and even take us back to our Indian roots.

    We say – Jai Mahishmati!

Also the 3D trailer is probably well received so if this shot predominantly for 3D market one would really have to watch it like that. The 2D trailer won’t do justice.

I’ve only liked watching a handful of films in 3D, otherwise there is little value in paying the premium. Here it might be different.

On Diwali you’ll see the most people ever in a day watching a trailer in 3D. Smart move by 2.0 as the footfalls for TOH will be biggest ever so good day for 2.0 to release trailer.

            Like

          • Of course the problem is that the majority of the population won’t be watching the film on 3D. Unless they’re really making efforts to make this format much more available than it usually is. The same happens in the US. 3D or IMAX is a big deal in terms of jacking up the gross but most of the audience still sees it on regular screens.

            Like

          • Agree and I would not be surprised if the 3D version of trailer was better received. But it only makes any sense if people go in for this and it’s easily accessible. It’s not even widely common in the West so I doubt in India it will be.

  83. Baazaar: Trailer of Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, Chitrangda Singh’s film to be unveiled at Bombay Stock Exchange
    FP StaffSep,23 2018 17:50:06 IST

Produced by Nikkhil Advani, the film revolves around stock trading and the share market. Owing to the heavy economic undertones, the makers thought the iconic BSE would serve as an apt location to release the theatrical promo. Arrangements for the big night are already underway and security is being beefed up, claim the report.

Director Gauravv K Chawla and the entire cast will reportedly come together for the event. No cinematic event has taken place in BSE before.

Baazaar will mark Rohan Mehra’s Bollywood debut and will feature a special dance number by Indo-Morocco-Canadian actress Nora Fatehi. The dancer came on-board after the remarkable success of Advani and Fatehi’s joint collaboration on Satyameva Jayate.

Bazaar has been jointly written by Advani, Aseem Arora and Parveez Sheikh. Emmay Entertainment is producing the film while Viacom18 Motion Pictures and KYTA Productions are on board as presenters.

      • felt the same way watching Neeson’s the Commuter. Both he and Denzel have been providing solid action films in the last number of years. Nothing special but the films worked, not least because they were lifted by each actor. But the Commuter though ok for a while, eventually gets very silly and by the end even has terrible FX! Haven’t seen Equaliser 2.

“I chose the city of Nagpur because the story is based there. The language of the film would be best showcased in Nagpur hence I chose the lanes of that city,” Manjule said in a statement.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu had a decent hold on Tuesday as collections hardly dipped from Monday and if the film can have a repeat on Wednesday then it may still have a chance for some sort box office run. Wednesday is a day which has seen drops even for the bigger films this year.

The film has so far collected 27.25 crore nett in five days and could be a first week of 32 crore nett depending on the next two days.

Stree Crosses Raazi In Many Circuits Within Four Weeks
    Wednesday 26 September 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Stree will go past the lifetime figures of Raazi due to wider reach and better performance in mass markets. In places like Mumbai and Mysore it will not be able to catch Raazi as it is well short. The performance of Stree is far less than Raazi in Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore which has kept Mumbai circuit and Mysore less than Raazi.

But if we look at the mass markets be it Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI or Bihar then Stree is already far ahead after just 3 and a bit weeks. It is also ahead in Delhi / UP thanks to far better collections in UP as Delhi city is a little less than Raazi. Stree will emerge the second highest grosser after Tanu Weds Manu Returns as far as the medium – small films are concerned.

Even though trending, teaser received mixed response from viewers mainly due to Akshay Kumar’s blink and miss appearance. Later, makers clarified that character of actor is pivotal and the movie story-line revolves around it but since they want to surprise the audience, didn’t reveal more details about it. Now as per the report in Bollywoodlife, makers have edited the trailer in such a way that it will make fans happy due to inclusion of more of Akshay Kumar and less of Rajinikanth.

  99. Why isn’t anybody talking about Manto here ? It may have made the minimum money, but it is quite possibly the best film among recent releases.I watched it on a Tuesday late evening at a multiplex in Chennai, along with a couple of friends. The small hall was half full — about 100- 120 people. But the film was highly appreciated by most — except perhaps for a couple of clueless viewers who spent their time tweeting or talking on phone occasionally.

Lovely, deep film that is so needed for today’s audience. Nandita has done a very good job with her writing. I have actually recently reviewed an anthology of writing about Manto ( Manto Saheb) — so I knew the subject very well. Nandita has been selective in her coverage, but pin point perfect in execution. She has actually spent time with the family in Pakistan and written her script ( in 2015).

Nawaazuddin was just right for the role. Also Rasika Duggal who played Manto’s wife. She comes across as a woman who understands and appreciates her genius husband, but also makes it clear that there is only so much she can put up with.

    Will attempt a bigger review.

    • Firstly, as you might have noticed, most of the folks on this blog consider Nawaz not to be a great actor. So he will always be under-appreciated. Secondly, at least in the US, I really haven’t seen it released: Wouldn’t know where to watch it but am really eager to watch it. Glad you liked it.

Please let me know where I can read your review. Thanks.

Yesterday, Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta made a spine chilling revelation about facing sexual misconduct by Nana Patekar few years back on the sets of Horn Ok Pleassss. She revealed how no one from the industry came forward and took a stand for it. Today, Bollywood’s superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were present at the trailer launch of their grand film Thugs Of Hindostan.

During the trailer launch event, both of them were asked about Tanushree and Nana Patekar sexual assault controversy. Amitabh Bachchan gave a smart reply and said, “Na toh main Tanushree hu aur na hi Nana Patekar. (Neither I am Tanushree, nor I am Nana Patekar.)”

Aamir on the other hand said, “Without knowing the veracity of something or the details of something, don’t think I can comment on it, it is not. It is not Right for me to comment. I don’t need to comment. But whenever something like this does happens it is really a sad thing. Now whether such thing has happened it is for people to investigate it, don’t think we can comment on it.”

Both are diplomatic. Feel bad for the lady and also for these two.

    • Well deserved!

To further expand my comment as to why I think Manmarziyan is Abhishek’s best performance to date, it’s finally a performance with thehrav in it. It’s not the scope of the role — both Guru & Yuva offer much more to play with, but it’s the execution. It’s finally about just being and not just ‘acting’. And that’s the best kind of acting!

It’s a very assured performance — one that can be expected from a thespian playing a lightweight role but still bringing enough character to surprise the audience. Only amateur actors rush in with their lines…whereas the more mature ones truly play with the dialogue. And their own ‘presence’ in the frame. Sometimes the presence is more than enough…the lines become immaterial.

      • The vast majority of the audience don’t appreciate subtlety. They clap for dialogues which are merely mouthed by an actor. The real credit for those seeti-maar lines goes to the writer of the film.

But when there are no seeti-taalielements to play with, when the actor has to engage the audience with his physical presence… and he/she still manages to move them, then that is a skill that separates the men from the boys!

      • I don’t know if I’d call it his best performance but this is a strong comment. Can’t do so now but at some other point I’ll respond properly to this not least because I did so in another context at length sometime back.
