Saw AndhaDhun. It’s a whole lot of twisty fun. Terrific score as well. Some of the character casting is super and Tabu.. well….. is just awesome as ever. The first half is almost perfection, slightly dips later but still a very good watch overall.
Turns out Abhishek Bachchan was the first choice to play the antagonist opposite Ranveer Singh in Rohit Shetty’s Simmba. Having worked with AB Jr in Bol Bachchan (2012), Rohit was confident he could convince Abhishek to take the role; after all, he wasn’t offering him just a standard villain’s part. The character is reportedly a charismatic and powerful bad guy with many shades. But Abhishek declined. Insiders are saying the filmmaker wasn’t pleased.
Abhishek, who’s had a career revival of sorts with Manmarziyaan (2018), is believed to have told Rohit he wasn’t ready to play villain just yet, citing Mani Ratnam’s Raavan (2010) as the only time he went “dark”, and reminded him the film failed at the box office. With Abhishek out, Rohit roped in Sonu Sood to take the role. Sonu, already having problems taking orders from Kangana Ranaut after she appointed herself director of Manikarnika when the original director Krish left, had now found a good reason to walk out of that film and into Simmba.
It’s no secret that Abhishek and Sonu have been buddies since they worked together in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year (2014); lately their ‘bromance’ has been all over Twitter. Abhishek keeps ribbing Sonu each time the latter posts photographs flaunting the eight-pack abs he’s acquired in preparation for his role in Simmba. ‘Stop it!’ AB responds in mock frustration when Sonu uploads another Chippendales- style shirtless picture.

Rannbhoomi postponed, Varun Dhawan to star in Shashank Khaitan’s spy thriller

It’s raining offers for Varun Dhawan. The actor is currently seen in Yash Raj Films‘ Sui Dhaaga – Made In India. The actor is already busy with the shooting of Dharma Productions’ period drama Kalank, will be starring in Remo D’Souza’s film with Katrina Kaif, a David Dhawan film and another Dharma film Rannbhoomi.
Now, it had been learned that the Shashank Khaitan directorial venture Rannbhoomi has been reportedly postponed. Instead, he will be kickstart work on a spy thriller which will star Varun Dhawan. Apparently, Varun has given a nod to the film which will be produced by Karan Johar. Varun reportedly might play an agent and it is something Shashank and he has never done before. The film is expected to get Hollywood stunt experts. It is expected to go on floors in 2019.
Meanwhile, it seems like Rannbhoomi will require a lot of research and has been put on hold for now. The film is set for 2020 release.
As for his next film, Varun Dhawan is completing Abhishek Varman’s Kalank starring alongside Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. The film is scheduled for April 2019 release.

Andhadhun and Loveyatri opened to a poor 10% response with Loveyatri being a little ahead as Mumbai / Gujarat is a little better but its about the evening as that will tell which film comes out ahead. The morning collections are very low so do not mean anything. Even if one film improves 10-15% compared to the other it will go ahead in the evening.
Andhadhun actually looks a Mumbai film so eventually will be beating Loveyatri in that circuit as Andhadhun looks a film made for Mumbai city and Pune.
Both films have easily been overshadowed by the Hollywood release Venom which has taken a good opening of around 25-30%. This film will collect more than the combined total of Andhadhun and Loveyatri unless they show huge turnaround. Venom has affected all the Hindi film being sceened including Sui Dhaaga and it is on course for a solid weekend.

Karwaan is a nice watch. Dhadak looks too artificial even when they’ve chosen the heart of touristy places. KJo has a knack of making everything look like a Bollywood set even when he is shooting in real locations. kudos!
VD is the new hope for them. They definitely are putting their chips on him. Good record with no disaster or flop yet. If Ranbir actually decides to wake up he should really be ruling the roost in the 20’s.
Sui Dhaaga has successfully entered the list of most profitable films of 2018. With films like Padmaavat, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Stree, Sui Dhaaga has made it to the list. The film has collected 64.25 crores till date. Made on a budget of 31 crores (including P & A), the film has managed to get the return on investment of 33.25 crores. The film has been proved a profitable venture for the makers as it has 107.25% of ROI %.
I think most BO sites have been reporting a budget of 32cr since a while. Nothing unusual in that. It will end up at around 90cr net.
I saw it on Thursday. It is worth a watch. It does not have the depth of Guru. But it was a decent effort. Certainly was not expecting a masterpiece from YRF.
Watched second half of Dhadak as the first half was not my cup of tea. If we forget that it is nakal of sairat, the film is watchable. Jahnavi is sweet and endearing and Ishaan should have been more expressive. The ending is different.
Say the budget is less.
Say the film is already in profit even before release due to all rights sold. Media will help willingly in this charade.
Different sites give different figures and confuse us.
Paid reviews. And biased critics.
The only appreciation is trending which can be gauged. It is difficult to fudge it.

Conspiracy theory 3: Phantom has been felled by the MeToo wave. Unlike bigger stars or celebs with universal appeal, Phantom viewers self-identify as NOT the sort of people who will “blame the victim”, and if something drastic wasn’t done these guys would be dead in the water. Not like a Nana P or X or Y who will have a million supporters saying “so what?!” “He’s misunderstood” or “she asked for it!”. I understand the people behind a small production house that is just starting out are in a tough spot but these guys clearly mishandled the situation, abysmally so. Had they been able to get Vikas Behl to even apologize for his repulsive conduct, things might have been different.
good point. But it gets back to the original point. Things get mishandled because they’re so atrociously pervasive. It would be impossible to survive in an industry if one used any sort of decent standard in these matters. Unfortunately this is just the truth.
To be honest, where Phantom and the folks associated with it, there is a more specific issue than the general f-ed up-ness of the industry, and that is hypocrisy: Kashyap has a long history of looking down on, even running down, other people for “selling out” (e.g. the Manmarziyan producer’s horrible cuts in the face of bigots protesting, but more broadly, an industry rife with star-kids, nepotism, etc.); but this whole article shows nothing so much as a “sell out”, i.e. people compromising to try and make their dream come true. In such circumstances, many others might also have done the same thing — but then those other people have not made a career out of “authenticity”, out of mocking a system where people do what they can to make it, survive, etc. Whether it’s this incident, or Kashyap’s own partnership with KJo (incidentally Dharma started casting Kalki K after that partnership), in any other person these might not be much to write home about, but a man who has made authenticity a selling point is going to be held to a higher standard. And should be. (How would Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani, and some of its disgusting misogyny — e.g. the sequences involving Evelyn Sharma — not have been ideologically offensive to (e.g.) Kalki K? One is perfectly free to say “hey it’s a paycheck” — heck I work in an office, need to do so, and that also involves compromises — but then don’t look down on others who might be doing the same, and also have a lot to lose! You see people demanding Bachchan take a stand, meanwhile some of the most supposedly “woke” folks can’t get a friend/partner to apologize!)
Well, he is the only person to have come out and shamed Bahl. That counts for something too!
The problem with Kashyap is he is a loose canon. I can imagine harm coming Vikas Bahl’s way (his career might get destroyed for good; might because this is Bollywood) but taking a stand is going to hurt Kashyap too. The fact that he has come out needs to be applauded.
Just take a look at Motwane for instance — he makes a film about a normal guy turning into a vigilante to fight social justice — what exactly is his stand on this matter?
excellent comment, hard to disagree with much. I am nonetheless sympathetic to this extent. The level of compromise in these and other matters in any film industry is so great that if one were to take any sort of position on anything one would sooner or later be faced with an untenable choice. One wouldn’t be able to denounce everyone of course. Again not disagreeing with anything you’re saying. I’m just trying to imagine what a position of purity would look like in a film industry. Indeed the bar is higher for a Kashyap. On the other hand the only ‘safe’ position seems to be to not say anything. For instance Farhan Akhtar came out on the Tanushree Dutta matter and he had a good tweet. On the other hand he ‘must’ know that in his industry all of this and much worse is par for the course. He’s not calling those other people out. Once more I don’t disagree that Kashyap has to live up to a higher standard. But even granting this it would be hard to remain consistent. Incidentally agree on the Bachchan bit as well. Of course this isn’t only about people in public life. How many people would be willing to give up their jobs in ordinary life if they felt their bosses were abusing their power in this sort of sense (and other ways)?

I’m not talking about the conspiracy idea (this has anyway become a losing battle, everyone sees conspiracy everywhere all the time), nor even your second theory (which might be funny in a harmless sort of way). Well, I dont consider all women are nuns and many are there who use sex to get things done their own way (it happens in our homes too). You’re changing the subject here. This isn’t about women using their bodies to get ahead or be willing to compromise in certain ways. That’s not my point. It’s more about constantly imagining women who are either using their bodies or being used in similar ways. For instance men do a lot of the same too in many situations. But no one talks about a man selling his body to get ahead. Put differently, and to be brutally honest, your humor in this regard does not strike me as coming from a position of greater female emancipation! To this end your point about males considering females as sex objects and all of this being perfectly natural is symptomatic. This isn’t about casual sex with the consent of the woman, the ‘sex object’ thing ties into a larger objectionable construct. I won’t get into this longer discussion here.

This Vikas bahl episode reminds me of the movie Pink which had its own detractors and very thin line between who’s right and who’s not.. To simply put, if the girl is fine with his co-worker to sleep at midnight in her own bed and drunk, it will give hints to go to the next step. Its very thin line. consensual and casual affairs happen same way. If you say you are that naive that you let your director come to your apartment and inside apartment at late night while both drunk and I think Vikas is known for his womanizer behavior. Vikas might have done this for 100 other girls where 99 of them accepted his advances and used his clout to reach next level in their careers.
Same issue in movie Pink. You hangout with random people on weekend and late night, drink and then each couple go into room and then you can’t surprised if either guy or gal makes an advance.
Situation: You invite a guy at your apartment. Its late night. You let him in your bedroom and then go into washroom. Then you come out wearing very sexy dress/sleepwear. Now what? If the guy grabs her and starts kissing.. is that sexual assault? The movie Pink and law will say it is sexual assault. But reality is little different. 99% of the relationships and affairs happen the same way. Again thin line and I don’t like to jump with the Internet/ media who will treat this situation literally. Even in affairs, people don’t ask Can I and starts kissing? They do it when the situation comes.

Yes agree. There is always a LINE. That line is different for any individual. Someone might carry on kissing and decide let’s get it on but then decide it’s a no. And they stop and tell the other person to stop which might confuse.
The other person must stop. If you have any ounce of respect for that other person you would stop. Whether you feel played or not you stop. People can change their minds. It’s everyone’s right. If you are not a criminal you would stop when asked or demanded to.
And reality is bullshit in this matter. What is reality for one person is perception for another. Basic human rights is the end goal. One’s body is their own and if they refuse that invasion, respect it. Tell them don’t lead me on instead or that I thought you wanted it. Don’t be THAT man who goes over that line.

With this much amount of hatred, it’s difficult to change one’s mind. I’ll attempt to offer a counter-point nonetheless. Maybe, just maybe, his friendship with Bahl soured because of this incident only. His motivations to come out could be anything (let’s not forget, he’s the only one among a team of 3 who has spoken up for the girl) — everyone’s free to speculate on these matters — the hard-right which has been so irked by Kashyap’s remarks against them will obviously assume the worst about him. This is expected.
Some people will realize that Kashyap himself is a survivor of child abuse and therefore is more likely to defend the victim than play a game of one-upmanship with his partner/friend.
TV soap in UK has a storyline where a victim of child abuse turns predator for pedophiles and goes after his best friend, and frames him for his own attempted murder and now he’s making his life in prison a hell! – anything is possible if you believe soap opera…

But Kangana herself did not say all of this about the Queen director when the film was being made! She’s not saying things about the scores of people she’s worked with in other films (she says things about some people sometimes). Is it believable that other than Vikas Bahl no one harassed her or forced her to do anything? Again I’m sympathetic. I’m not judging her one way or the other but her outrage too is selective. Others are selective, she is as well. Now I’m not pretending for a moment that these power equations are all equal. Maybe Kashyap is blameworthy here, I don’t know all the details. My point though is a different one (and I’ve made it earlier with respect to Hollywood as well). I think it’s comforting for us to always blame one side or the other in the latest sensationalist story that emerges. It’s good that people who deserve to be shamed are being shamed. but one doesn’t need to sympathize with such people to also accept that this is a culture. In such a culture even if you’re Kashyap you can’t survive if you have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy. As certainly as Kangana cannot survive. Dibakar Banerjee in that video I’ve posted elsewhere talks about the compromises he’s forced to make as a filmmaker. Doesn’t the same hold for him and others in every sense? Could he really say that he wouldn’t accepted financing for a film if the financier happened to be a sleazy character doing these sorts of things with women all the time? These examples could be multiplied infinitely. As for Kashyap saying many things yes people say a lot of things. We do all the time here too. But we’ve not been tested. Would we resign from our positions if we felt that our bosses were doing such things? I very much doubt it. Even if we were willing to what if we felt that most bosses were that way? Would we leave that line of work altogether? Again it’s very easy to jump on one particular case and take one side or the other but it’s harder to make that larger systemic argument. And ultimately aren’t we also implicated as the audience? Do we stop watching the films of particular actors/directors or whoever when we hear about their stories? There are many reasons people might not watch Salman’s films but let’s be honest — no one avoids them because of all his terrible behavior from his treatment of women to running over people on sidewalks. In a movie industry you have to make a 100 compromises every single day. There are people who don’t do these sorts of things personally but still work with others who do. How would they last otherwise? Finally, it’s certainly true that the bar is higher for you if you make certain kinds of statements. But this doesn’t mean that those who don’t get off scot-free. Still not defending Kashyap. Nor am I saying that Vikas Bahl shouldn’t be shamed. But let’s move beyond this stuff and get to the heart of the matter! Let’s take a poll — how many people are willing to stop watching films if people connected with them indulge in such behavior? Think we all the answer. And here it’s not adequate to say that we don’t know for a fact what happened in other cases. We don’t of course but unless we’re naive or worse we all know (or ought to know) that the level of sexual exploitation (not just of women but alright let’s stick to the subject for now) is always at stunningly high levels. And it’s also quite often of the most degrading kind. It’s simply institutionalized in many ways, a fact of life. And things are complicated. Everyone loved Queen (I personally wasn’t much of a fan but that’s another matter). The film is what it is and its director is also who he is! What can one say? The worst kinds of human beings sometimes produce the best artistic works. It’s a paradox of life. This is so true. I am always reminded of Roman Polanski whose work I do admire even considering the charges against him. I’ve lived by the adage that one should separate the art from the artist but at times it’s not so easy.
thanks very much Saket.. and yes it is indeed not easy to come down on one side of the debate or the other. The same human mind that creates those very sensitive, probing, often ethically challenging works of art (not only in cinema) is also capable of all kinds of cruelty and depravity. Much as some great thinkers have defended horrible political regimes at points. These things happen. But yes Polanski’s is a textbook example.
Same could be said for the allegations against Woody Allen. It gets hard to separate the artist from the man from the allegations from your opinions and values.
thanks as always Qalandar..what’s also difficult is accepting not just the larger framework within which all of this happens but to go further still and figure out those ways of thinking (in a society) that are then always secretly enabling such exploitation. If you think of women in certain ways, describe them in certain ways, make jokes about them in certain ways, specially when it comes to women seen as being more emancipated, if you represent female sexuality in certain ways.. all of this doesn’t obviously create exploitation but it normalizes it to a certain degree. Because we already believe that women in certain situations either ought to know what they’re getting into and therefore don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt or they don’t deserve any sympathy if they nonetheless lived with it for the sake of a career. In other words a woman with desires, ambitions etc doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. The problem is if you object too much people think ‘you’re not lightening up, taking everything too seriously, hey it’s just a joke’ etc etc. There is the usual ‘oh things are so PC these days you can’t even joke about things’. Those ‘things’ then are racist or bigoted humor or the same directed against women and so on. I’m not crazy here. There is a lot of humor that is fine, I’m certainly not suggesting that everything be policed. But equally certain instances have to be called out as well.

Not sure if there’s anything to this story. Of course the irony is that Abhishek is more likely to do a horror comedy film where he probably has a performance-oriented part but that is in all probability not ‘stupid’ enough to do huge business, even on WOM! It’s often less about genre and more about what happens ‘within’ the genre.
On its day 1, it has managed to collect 2.80 crores at the box office. The trade experts had predicted an opening of 3 crores since the makers had promoted the film in every possible way and it also has family appeal. Apart from the promotions, the main key point of the film is the songs, everyone has liked the songs. Well, the opening day numbers are not that bad, but one has to see how it does on Saturday and Sunday.

And after they reach a particular stage where they can wield power, they exact revenge upon other girls. Somehow the multiple rejections from their past channel their pent-up frustrations to come out in this fashion.

I think every piece of evidence suggests TOH will open rupee for rupee the best in a very long time. I certainly haven’t seen it in my following of numbers for 2 decades nearly. We will learn the true market capacity with this one for 1 day collections in India in Hindi format.
Continuing on the “European” cinema discussion, I guess such cinema was always part of Hindi entertainment right from the 1960’s. The only difference being that from the 60’s to the 90’s niche films never had the support and presence of A listers and adequate face value (barring exceptions like Hrishikesh Mukherjee films). It took an Aamir Khan to start backing niche urban multiplex content with DCH in 2001 and the rest like SRK (Swades, CDI), Hrithik (Lakshya, Guzaarish, ZNMD) and Akshay (Baby, Airlift) followed while the likes of Ranbir have made a career out of doing niche urban multiplex cinema. As for BOI’s claims of BARFI! being a one off, RDB, TZP, Chak De and ZNMD had released well before Barfi! while Airlift and Raazi have released thereafter, all of which are niche films starring A listers. Boi is pretty much caught on the backfoot here.

Rarely essential to the narrative, the item song declares that it is permissible, and even natural, to cavalierly use women’s bodies for entertainment.
Songs in which women dance for men and sing about their bodies and clothes are just one form of the several problems in Hindi cinema’s depiction of women. Such songs have robust distribution networks that extend beyond the films in which they appear. These songs can cause more widespread harm to the performing woman as well as the woman in the audience than the film itself.
Andhadhun seems to have very less shows here in Hyderabad as Sui Dhaga and Stree are still running not to mention the disaster that Salman has produced.

Rowan Atkinson is just that kind of actor. His demeanor is Bean. He’s awkward looking, languid and even in more serious TV shows he still displays a bit of Bean. Bean TV shows were a hoot in early 90’s. Johnny English, is what Bean meets James Bond – I can imagine this to be worse than Hello Brother.

Andhadhun is a crackerjack thriller, reminiscent of Hitcock’s best — Rope is probably the one its closest to, but it’s also a deeply disturbing film. Nimble footed and full of twists & turns, it’s quite possibly the darkest black comedy I’ve seen in years. Sriram Raghavan, in his inimitable style, pens a love letter to Bollywood of the 70s, mixing style and panache with characters that would not be out of place in Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly.
It’s a very unwholesome mix that also doubles up as nail-biting entertainment, and the climax is quintessential Hollywood — sharing space in the Shyamalan/Usual Suspects universe. One of the many interpretations of the climax is quite unsettling, which by the time it registers, does not spring an expression of shock or horror at all. It all makes perfect sense in world inhabited by the morally and ethically blind.
“I enjoy playing the audience like a piano,” Hitchcock once famously said. Raghavan makes that metaphor come alive by using the piano, throughout the film, as a reminder of how skilfully he’s playing us. This film, in short, is simply unmissable. In theatres, that is.
It’s a treat on the blog today, all these fine notes! I definitely have this on my radar. Think the director said somewhere that he really made the whole film for a 7-8 min sequence somewhere.
Tabu is having a ball off-late…..features in GM3 and stood tall above everything else (including AD) and now this….and she has a thing for Shakespearean characters a la Macbeth which VB has exploited so well;-)))

I found the film deeply disturbing. I heard people laughing at some of the sequences that made me flinch. So the reasons for liking the film may be quite different.
This is quite a good phase for Bollywood movies. Within a few weeks we’ve had Manmarziyan and Andhadhun, with Patakha (haven’t seen this) sandwiched in between. From the soul-nourishing freshness of Manmarziyan, to the soul-crushing dread of Andhadhun, they cover quite a wide spectrum too!
Regarding performances, this isn’t a performance-oriented film, per se. There is not much dramatic depth in the story, in the conventional sense at least, and being a thriller and all, there isn’t enough space to breathe and reflect — essential qualities for enabling nuanced performances.
That said, Tabu is quite good in her role. In a gender reversal of sorts, she plays the wisecracking, cynical, prototype noir character, even if she’s supposed to be playing the role of a femme fatale. This is actually refreshing.
Ayushmann has a very affable personality and he provides able support. Perhaps keeping the final twist in mind, his genial appearance is a good fit.
Radhika Apte, unfortunately, does not have much to do but is quite effortless in her small role.
There is a nice tribute to Anil Dhawan in the film, with a dash of 70s nostalgia thrown in. All for good effect though.
Honestly I need to watch Andhadhun again. Not because I did not find it a very good film , but i was in a theater filed with dumbfuck idiots who bring children along who just cannot keep quiet.
My impression is I watched a very involving film filled with surprises and where the twists are met with howling audience members, which I cannot recall in a thriller at least
I suggest waching it in isolation .. this one requires focus, coz I suspect there is clever, very clever writing that has gone into it

watched Andhadhun…..Saket has written a very good note abote for it…..I don’t feel like adding much there….superb movie and keeps on the edge till the last scene…..woah! what performances….Tabu as always towers above everything here….Ayushman has an excellent script-sense although he is just an okay performer but he is a smart actor…..SR as a director gets 10/10 here….what a crisp screenplay! i think in this genre….this is the finest film to come out in Hindi in last what 5 or 10 years??? can’t remember anything closer to this….go watch it guys….

It’s a prickly spot for BOI. Just last week Sui Dhaaga did double on Sunday to Friday and now Andhadhun has done thrice with a lower screen count. Andhadhun seems like a clear winner here. It will go on to make 40Cr, maybe 50 Cr. Hard to predict. Badhai Ho is also releasing, seems until TOH these 2 films will probably do solid business.

Andhadhun came out the top film on Sunday with collections of 7 crore nett on Sunday. The film has gone ahead of Venom despite a much weaker start compared to that film. The film has jumped around 110% on Saturday and consolidated with 40% growth on Sunday. The weekend is ordinary but the trend is excellent and it depends on how the film holds from here on.
The film has grossed over 14 crore nett and it should see a good Monday hold going by weekend trend and the target should be to be at least around the Friday figure. The weekend collections of Andhadhun are as follows.

Saturday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

Loveyatri collected a poor 6.75 crore nett in its first weekend which is less than half of Andhadhun. There was some decent growth on Sunday especially in Gujarat but thats not going to make much of a difference as the weekend is too low and weekday occupancy will be very low making it tough for the film to go anywhere. Indian streaming platform Hotstar has tied up with HOOQ, a South Asian video-on-demand service, to expand its slate of international titles. The deal will give Hotstar’s premium users access to films from Warner Bros, Miramax, Sony Pictures and Lionsgate, Variety reported.
While the deal was announced on Monday, 20 television series are already being streamed on Hotstar in partnership with HOOQ, as NDTV reported last week. These include The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Arrow, The Oath and The Goldbergs. The announcement makes clear that the tie-up will also include major Hollywood titles, including Pulp Fiction (1994), Wonder Woman (2017), the Harry Potter series and Spider-Man (2002).

Watching A Star is Born tonight, but can’t say I have any desire to watch Venom — never liked this character, but this movie version seems to have utterly eviscerated his Spiderman-history, making him a “stand-alone”; just violates the character’s integrity (i.e. this is NOT the kind of adaptation/departure that changes things but is true to the spirit — e.g. Netflix’s Daredevil); the whole motivation for Eddie Brock’s character (as well as that of the symbiote who binds with him), is that love-turned-to-loathing relationship with Peter Parker/Spiderman. I suppose this is par for the course with the BS Marvel often pulls (including in the comics; DC is much better on thus front) but still pretty annoying.
I’m just relieved it’s a “regular” film that doesn’t feature any superheros or sci-fi! Honestly, Hollywood (especially in comparison with how wonderful the best of American TV is these days) is a cultural and artistic desert. When you consider the resources and talent available, Hollywood might be worse than Bollywood!
I haven’t watched a superhero film since 2012. That’s how bored I am with this genre and I absolutely loved this genre. Now it sucks imo. Nolan changed it for me and in doing so stopped me from watching any more.
Completely agree — honestly the only thing worth watching in several years on this front has been Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones (only saw first season), and among the movies, Wonder Woman and Black Panther. I’ve skipped most of them so perhaps there are other good ones I’ve missed…
Yaar, Andhadhun is not playing in NYC, and New Jersey is a bit of a hike (I’d do it for certain Tamil films, but will sadly wait until it shows up on Netflix or Amazon)…it’s really unfortunate, as most of the prior Raghavan films (with the exception of Jonny Gaddar) have been screened here.
Well the invasion of South Indian films is a reality. My local has only 2 Indian films on – 96 and the Ratnam one. The other cinema, a good 30 mins away has these 2 plus Andhadhun, Sui Dhaaga and a Punjabi film.
Tastes or customer base has changed a lot in a couple of years.
I’m sure TOH will have a record number of shows – 20+ easily daily.
Trafford has reduced it from two shows to one show. I didn’t want to wait until 9:15pm to watch it. So I went all the way to Blackburn for the 4pm showing.
Same case with me for Andhadhun. I hope they release movies online overseas if they can’t make it in theaters and charge, say $10. You’ll still make more money than releasing in 1,2 shows.
It’s a bit weird. Where I live (South West UK) it does have quite a few shows. At least 3 shows per day. I thought closer to London it might have many more shows.
I’m pretty sure there is a chain of cinemas close to Southall which only screens Indian movies. Reading is good for Hindi films too. I saw Talaash in Reading.
I’ve been to Reading once and watched a film there. Southall, not anymore. In my area you have Feltham, Harrow, Wembley…these are very heavily populated with Indians and show films. Feltham is the most well known. It will be on lock down when TOH arrives. I have a Cineworld on my road, 5 mins walk…but shows less frequent.
I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the same here. Although I’ll probably wait for the reviews! For me it’s a drive to the city center, which isn’t too bad.
I saw PK in a full theater in Wales, of all places.
I remember driving 50 miles to see any Hindi movie..When K3G played in near by theatre..there was a long line to get into cinema and regular folks were asking why this line…Now I live where I can see any Indian movie quite easily..
Having said that..there was no assigned seating in regular halls…Only halls where they catered Indian crowd had assigned seatings…now I see many regular halls have assigned seating…
You can’t beat the experience of watching a film in India. I really miss the crowds, the seeti taalis even in high-end multiplexes. Single screens are even more fun!
The flip side is watching Anurag Kashyap’s movies in India. I remember watching Gulaal with 12-13 people in the theater. Out of which we, as a group, contributed 6.
A STAR IS BORN is a fantastic ode to Hollywood of yore and an unmistakable similarity to ABHIMAAN. It is as good, if not better, than the Judy Garland version. Both the leads are terrific. It’s a wholesome film.
Andhadhun is on course to emerge a HIT film as it records good collections on Monday. The film is heading towards a good 30-40% jump as compared to the first day. The collections of the film will be in the 3.25 crore nett region which takes the film to over 17.50 crore nett in four days.
The total is not much but now the film will start making ground over the next few weeks. The film has been liked by the high end multiplex crowd in metros like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. It was a holiday in Kolkata on Monday and next week will be a prolonged holiday which will ensure Kolkata also scores big for the film.
Its the same crowd that takes films like Neerja and Kapoor & Sons to good numbers and even though appreciation is very limited to the metros it is not to difficult to get 50 lakh footfalls when these metros take to a film. The above films easily went higher than 50 lakh footfalls as the former had tax exemption while the latter had music but for Andhadhun even 50 lakh footfalls will see just a little short of Neerja and Kapoor & Sons due to a rise in ticket prices and reduction tax due to GST.
The core Hindi film crowd has not come on board but that is expected and the film does not really need it either to become a HIT. The first week should easily cross 25 crore nett from here and Friday does not have major competition. It will be the second Friday which should confirm HIT status if it holds well.
BOI are so depressed. It’s been like the European championships this year! And they have to support Bachchan/Aamir in TOH now, can it get any worse? God forbid Zero failing, BOI will be on its knees praying for Bharat and Salman again!
There is a lot to digest from Andhadhun. I did really like the long sequence, very masterful, and already referred to elsewhere on this blog, I liked how it plays with us as the audience. We are so used to seeing everything in a hindi film. Everything is usually spoonfed to us in other standard bollywood flicks. Action is done in slow motion. Twists are explained and replayed. But this sequence is like a tongue in cheek wink at us. It’s like “look at you sitting there, expecting us to tell you everything, but hey what do you really know eh?”. And every revelation in this sequence is like a kick in our balls. It also plays with what we see. We are not allowed to see everything. We desperately want to get the full details of what is going on. But we can’t. We are now the blind ones.
I haven’t seen Andhadhun yet but if you get the chance check out Mysskin’s fantastic Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum. The film is a thriller that plays around with audience expectations in the same sense.
Andhadhun- A perfect first half, followed by a decent 2nd half. And an open ending, making one curious of all possibilities. It has tremendous repeat value as a thriller film. Must have been a tough film to make and too keep the audiences engaged till the end credits. But, again i felt the movie kinda slumped after the great first half.
Rani is all set to entertain the Chinese audiences with her acting and will be in China from 7th to 12th of October. During that time, she will be touring 5 major cities in China that include, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu. The promotions for the movie are in full swing.

I am really looking forward to watching Andhadhun and I’m happy for all the talented actors involved. On a different note, it’s been amusing to see Radhika Apte’s trajectory from rustic every woman in Shor to the cool, edgy, intellectual sex symbol that she is considered today.

Andhadhun managed to score in Overseas in its first weekend as it collected around $900,000 which is better than a lot of films this year. Below are the collections of some films in Overseas and comparatively Andhadhun has done much better.

Stree Beats Many 300 Crore Plus Films In Week Five

Stree continued to compete with the biggest films in week five also. The film had recorded the tenth biggest fourth week of all time and has now recorded the twelfth biggest fifth week of all time. The fifth week collections are higher than many of the 300 crore nett plus films like Sanju, PK, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan.
It is again probably the smallest film in the chart below though a case can be made for Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par which had limited budgets and were a decade back but eventually those films also had big stars.
Here’s a look at number of all-time grosser delivered by actors:
1. Aamir Khan: 5 Films – Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal
2. Nargis: 3 Films – Barsaat, Shree 420 and Mother India
3. Dilip Kumar: 2 Films – Aan and Mughal – E – Azam
4. Raj Kapoor: 2 Films – Barsaat and Shree 420

6. Sunil Dutt: 1 Film – Mother India

8. Amitabh Bachchan: 1 Film – Sholay (The mega-star would have had more all-time grossers had Sholay not released in the early days of his career. Call it sheer bad luck that he got a historic blockbuster like Sholay in just the 5th year of his acting career.)
9. Madhuri Dixit: 1 Film – Hum Aapke Hai Kaun
10. Salman Khan: 1 Film – Hum Aapke Hai Kaun (Maine Pyaar Kiya almost challenged the collections of Sholay upon its release, and fell short by a margin of merely 50 Lakh.)
A molestation case filed by actor Preity Zinta against industrialist Ness Wadia in 2014 was today cancelled by the Bombay High Court, news agency ANI has reported. The court decision comes two days after it had suggested the actor to consider “finishing off” the case.

To add to this here (and I can’t remember whether I said this in any of those older notes) Dutta’s Rajasthan vision is essentially an anarchic one. In contrast his war films are usually exactly the opposite (barring the first half of Refugee, in the second half this too becomes a bit of a sell-out), they’re about preserving the ‘order’ of the state. This is a considerable loss as far as I’m concerned but in any case Dutta argues against his own history here or at least the sequence that runs from Ghulami through Batwara (Kshatriya, the film that follows is not serious enough). I’d go further here. I think all great visions of ‘war’ are also partly anarchic ones. otherwise they’re utterly boring. I can think of very many movies around the world that attest to this idea but an obvious example is Apocalypse Now (the redux version is even better). The same goes for literary works. To make of war simply an extension of the nationalist fiction is certainly understandable and in a way comes with the terrain (at least the modern nation-state terrain) but it is precisely for this reason ‘boring’. The human stories of war on the other hand, or all its nihilistic elements, or for that matter the carnage associated with it — all of this makes even ‘good’ wars (those that seem justifiable from most perspectives) suspect or at least ‘tragic’. Everything Border argues for is too easy (including the ending), what is complicated is the Refugee (again the first half, not the second where Dutta absurdly cancels out the essential premise of the film) and moreso the world of Ghulami and beyond. Here Dutta does advance a certain notion of valor and machismo which is of course easy in its own way but the fact that all of this comes about in a kind of either crumbling order or one where older values seem utterly deconstructed or exposed without new ones having taken their place, all of this dilutes that charge a bit. One cannot read Ghulami as either simply supporting nationalist fictions or for that matter those martial values associated with Rajasthan (rightly or wrong). Caste lies at the heart of this world. The ‘new’ in this world cannot come forth till caste is thoroughly dismantled. It is a truth we continue to repress in contemporary India. We continue to pretend it does not exist or refuse to recognize all its dimensions. So much about #metoo also isn’t comprehensible in Indian terms without accounting for caste. This could be a whole different discussion. On a related note Lawaaris, in my view Bachchan’s most important film in the 80s, also has caste as a central reference point.
What a superb note — and that last bit about caste has its analogs even in the national movement, with only Ambedkar essentially arguing for that thorough dismantling, and Nehru/Gandhi/Patel all on the side of “reform” (which was perhaps more realistic given where so much of the pubic is, but also made meaningful change UNrealistic, in that the rhetoric of reform is hand in glove with more or less conservative dispensations (that even this was attacked as crazily out there says more about where the critics were, than about the agenda)). Back to the film, your initial point gets to (and in a far more eloquent way than I could have managed) the distinction between the “epic” and the (what should I call it?) prosaic modes that I was getting at in that first link. The genre of Border, as with most Hollywood films of this sort (whether the film is good or bad is a separate question), is the genre of the spectacle, the comforting fiction, a story that essentially points in only one direction; with Ghulami (and in this narrow sense, Batwara is an even better example), the narrative can be read multiple ways, or certainly more ways than Border can be read, with characters that don’t slot as easily (Naseer’s character in the earlier film; or Shammi Kapoor’s, Mohsin Khan’s, or Vinod Khanna’s in the later one, come to mind). Another way to think about this is that Border is, if we must insist on reading it as an epic, more akin to the Tulsidas Ramayana; Ghulami is more Homeric, or perhaps even more like Valmiki’s Ramayana — i.e. there are obvious baddies in this world (so not completely Homeric), but the achievements of heroism are several shades more ambiguous than in Tulsidas’ epic. Batwara is even more Homeric — in the sense of less judgmental — as I recall it (haven’t seen it in many years), but obviously significantly lesser than Ghulami as a film. The contrast with films like Border is striking, as is the contrast with films like Eklavya, that were crying out for epic treatment but weren’t directed by someone with the right sensibility.
On Refugee, the second half was a crime — as a stand-alone film it would have been un-objectionable but it made no sense coming after that first half (itself Dutta’s best work since Batwara).
Another film to re-visit here is the politically prescient Ganga ki Saugandh — far far inferior to, and much less interesting than, the great Dutta films, but worth checking out (for, among other reasons, because Bachchan was hardly ever on this terrain, before or since; the first Bachchan in Adalat comes to mind, but not much else). It’s a film that is hardly seen in urban circles these days but was a huge hit in 1978, and was culturally resonant in many parts of the country in a way not open to (e.g.) a more urbane film like Don. Heck even TODAY it is very rare to show a Brahmin-Dalit love story (even if it’s the female who is Dalit, i.e. not as “provocative” in our sorry culture as the other way around), much less back in 1978, and all woven together into a narrative of solidarity across communal/caste lines, in the cause of social justice. Amitabh’s versatility was, of course one notes this for the umpteenth time, as ever, a wonder to behold…
If that’s what 60-70cr grossers do the man, imagine what he will do if (an absolutely huge ‘if’ here) he regularly churns out 300cr grossers like Aamir! It is an unacceptable behaviour from an actor. The sooner the audience turns away from him and brings him back to earth, the better.

As for the film, Ahan Shetty would be making his debut with the Hindi remake of the Telugu hit RX 100. The movie starred debutant Kartikeya Gummakonda and Payal Rajput. Sajid Nadiadwala confirmed that he has acquired the remake rights of RX 100 for the grand launch of Ahan Shetty. While they are currently in talks with several directors, the movie will release in May 2019.

Marginal propensity to consume Salman at home is at an all-time high for India. They don’t have the funds to go to cinema. Basically these are lazy people not contributing to the economy anymore. They wait for Salman films to hit the TV or they confuse Big Boss with his films. They watch his trailers on YouTube though, at least they are paying broadband connection fees.
Of course. They will only take into account what suits their narrative. Even Golmaal Returns will over time have more viewership but ‘hey that’s a comedy, it’s what Indian’s watch so it doesn’t count’ but Dangal can be compared to TZH because they are like for like. LOL. Compare Sultan with Dangal and wait for TOH to compare it with TZH.
Kajol films have been in general terrible, save KJo,YRF and a brilliant Fanaa (the only Kajol film I am hugely fan of) – whenever she has tried to step out of her comfort zone – the results are disasters

Saw AndhaDhun. It’s a whole lot of twisty fun. Terrific score as well. Some of the character casting is super and Tabu.. well….. is just awesome as ever. The first half is almost perfection, slightly dips later but still a very good watch overall.

Turns out Abhishek Bachchan was the first choice to play the antagonist opposite Ranveer Singh in Rohit Shetty’s Simmba. Having worked with AB Jr in Bol Bachchan (2012), Rohit was confident he could convince Abhishek to take the role; after all, he wasn’t offering him just a standard villain’s part. The character is reportedly a charismatic and powerful bad guy with many shades. But Abhishek declined. Insiders are saying the filmmaker wasn’t pleased.
Abhishek, who’s had a career revival of sorts with Manmarziyaan (2018), is believed to have told Rohit he wasn’t ready to play villain just yet, citing Mani Ratnam’s Raavan (2010) as the only time he went “dark”, and reminded him the film failed at the box office. With Abhishek out, Rohit roped in Sonu Sood to take the role. Sonu, already having problems taking orders from Kangana Ranaut after she appointed herself director of Manikarnika when the original director Krish left, had now found a good reason to walk out of that film and into Simmba.
It’s no secret that Abhishek and Sonu have been buddies since they worked together in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year (2014); lately their ‘bromance’ has been all over Twitter. Abhishek keeps ribbing Sonu each time the latter posts photographs flaunting the eight-pack abs he’s acquired in preparation for his role in Simmba. ‘Stop it!’ AB responds in mock frustration when Sonu uploads another Chippendales- style shirtless picture.

Rannbhoomi postponed, Varun Dhawan to star in Shashank Khaitan’s spy thriller

It’s raining offers for Varun Dhawan. The actor is currently seen in Yash Raj Films‘ Sui Dhaaga – Made In India. The actor is already busy with the shooting of Dharma Productions’ period drama Kalank, will be starring in Remo D’Souza’s film with Katrina Kaif, a David Dhawan film and another Dharma film Rannbhoomi.
Now, it had been learned that the Shashank Khaitan directorial venture Rannbhoomi has been reportedly postponed. Instead, he will be kickstart work on a spy thriller which will star Varun Dhawan. Apparently, Varun has given a nod to the film which will be produced by Karan Johar. Varun reportedly might play an agent and it is something Shashank and he has never done before. The film is expected to get Hollywood stunt experts. It is expected to go on floors in 2019.
Meanwhile, it seems like Rannbhoomi will require a lot of research and has been put on hold for now. The film is set for 2020 release.
As for his next film, Varun Dhawan is completing Abhishek Varman’s Kalank starring alongside Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. The film is scheduled for April 2019 release.

Andhadhun and Loveyatri opened to a poor 10% response with Loveyatri being a little ahead as Mumbai / Gujarat is a little better but its about the evening as that will tell which film comes out ahead. The morning collections are very low so do not mean anything. Even if one film improves 10-15% compared to the other it will go ahead in the evening.
Andhadhun actually looks a Mumbai film so eventually will be beating Loveyatri in that circuit as Andhadhun looks a film made for Mumbai city and Pune.
Both films have easily been overshadowed by the Hollywood release Venom which has taken a good opening of around 25-30%. This film will collect more than the combined total of Andhadhun and Loveyatri unless they show huge turnaround. Venom has affected all the Hindi film being sceened including Sui Dhaaga and it is on course for a solid weekend.

I think most BO sites have been reporting a budget of 32cr since a while. Nothing unusual in that. It will end up at around 90cr net.
I saw it on Thursday. It is worth a watch. It does not have the depth of Guru. But it was a decent effort. Certainly was not expecting a masterpiece from YRF.

Watched second half of Dhadak as the first half was not my cup of tea. If we forget that it is nakal of sairat, the film is watchable. Jahnavi is sweet and endearing and Ishaan should have been more expressive. The ending is different.

Different sites give different figures and confuse us.
Paid reviews. And biased critics.
The only appreciation is trending which can be gauged. It is difficult to fudge it.
TZH, Queen, Stree trended without doubt. Other films I did not keep track.
We cant even trust awards to get the correct picture.

Conspiracy theory 3: Phantom has been felled by the MeToo wave. Unlike bigger stars or celebs with universal appeal, Phantom viewers self-identify as NOT the sort of people who will “blame the victim”, and if something drastic wasn’t done these guys would be dead in the water. Not like a Nana P or X or Y who will have a million supporters saying “so what?!” “He’s misunderstood” or “she asked for it!”. I understand the people behind a small production house that is just starting out are in a tough spot but these guys clearly mishandled the situation, abysmally so. Had they been able to get Vikas Behl to even apologize for his repulsive conduct, things might have been different.

To be honest, where Phantom and the folks associated with it, there is a more specific issue than the general f-ed up-ness of the industry, and that is hypocrisy: Kashyap has a long history of looking down on, even running down, other people for “selling out” (e.g. the Manmarziyan producer’s horrible cuts in the face of bigots protesting, but more broadly, an industry rife with star-kids, nepotism, etc.); but this whole article shows nothing so much as a “sell out”, i.e. people compromising to try and make their dream come true. In such circumstances, many others might also have done the same thing — but then those other people have not made a career out of “authenticity”, out of mocking a system where people do what they can to make it, survive, etc. Whether it’s this incident, or Kashyap’s own partnership with KJo (incidentally Dharma started casting Kalki K after that partnership), in any other person these might not be much to write home about, but a man who has made authenticity a selling point is going to be held to a higher standard. And should be. (How would Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani, and some of its disgusting misogyny — e.g. the sequences involving Evelyn Sharma — not have been ideologically offensive to (e.g.) Kalki K? One is perfectly free to say “hey it’s a paycheck” — heck I work in an office, need to do so, and that also involves compromises — but then don’t look down on others who might be doing the same, and also have a lot to lose! You see people demanding Bachchan take a stand, meanwhile some of the most supposedly “woke” folks can’t get a friend/partner to apologize!)

The problem with Kashyap is he is a loose canon. I can imagine harm coming Vikas Bahl’s way (his career might get destroyed for good; might because this is Bollywood) but taking a stand is going to hurt Kashyap too. The fact that he has come out needs to be applauded.
Just take a look at Motwane for instance — he makes a film about a normal guy turning into a vigilante to fight social justice — what exactly is his stand on this matter?

excellent comment, hard to disagree with much. I am nonetheless sympathetic to this extent. The level of compromise in these and other matters in any film industry is so great that if one were to take any sort of position on anything one would sooner or later be faced with an untenable choice. One wouldn’t be able to denounce everyone of course. Again not disagreeing with anything you’re saying. I’m just trying to imagine what a position of purity would look like in a film industry. Indeed the bar is higher for a Kashyap. On the other hand the only ‘safe’ position seems to be to not say anything. For instance Farhan Akhtar came out on the Tanushree Dutta matter and he had a good tweet. On the other hand he ‘must’ know that in his industry all of this and much worse is par for the course. He’s not calling those other people out. Once more I don’t disagree that Kashyap has to live up to a higher standard. But even granting this it would be hard to remain consistent. Incidentally agree on the Bachchan bit as well. Of course this isn’t only about people in public life. How many people would be willing to give up their jobs in ordinary life if they felt their bosses were abusing their power in this sort of sense (and other ways)?

I’m not talking about the conspiracy idea (this has anyway become a losing battle, everyone sees conspiracy everywhere all the time), nor even your second theory (which might be funny in a harmless sort of way). It’s the first one. It’s a serious issue here that doesn’t need a flippant remark that furthermore casts the woman in utterly unflattering terms. Well, I dont consider all women are nuns and many are there who use sex to get things done their own way (it happens in our homes too). A male considering a female as a sex object or the other way round is never a problem – its just ‘nature’. The problem is about respecting the consent from your opposite sex – either ways. What do you think?
Say hypothetically, Kashyap and Kangana are both willing to ‘help’ each other in exchange of sexual favors, then who are we to hold moral grounds and say its wrong?
Problem is when you force people (either sex) into your bed because of your power and influence – and that happens more often than we tend to acknowledge. Everywhere.

You’re changing the subject here. This isn’t about women using their bodies to get ahead or be willing to compromise in certain ways. That’s not my point. It’s more about constantly imagining women who are either using their bodies or being used in similar ways. For instance men do a lot of the same too in many situations. But no one talks about a man selling his body to get ahead. Put differently, and to be brutally honest, your humor in this regard does not strike me as coming from a position of greater female emancipation! To this end your point about males considering females as sex objects and all of this being perfectly natural is symptomatic. This isn’t about casual sex with the consent of the woman, the ‘sex object’ thing ties into a larger objectionable construct. I won’t get into this longer discussion here.

This Vikas bahl episode reminds me of the movie Pink which had its own detractors and very thin line between who’s right and who’s not.. To simply put, if the girl is fine with his co-worker to sleep at midnight in her own bed and drunk, it will give hints to go to the next step. Its very thin line. consensual and casual affairs happen same way. If you say you are that naive that you let your director come to your apartment and inside apartment at late night while both drunk and I think Vikas is known for his womanizer behavior. Vikas might have done this for 100 other girls where 99 of them accepted his advances and used his clout to reach next level in their careers.
Same issue in movie Pink. You hangout with random people on weekend and late night, drink and then each couple go into room and then you can’t surprised if either guy or gal makes an advance.
Situation: You invite a guy at your apartment. Its late night. You let him in your bedroom and then go into washroom. Then you come out wearing very sexy dress/sleepwear. Now what? If the guy grabs her and starts kissing.. is that sexual assault? The movie Pink and law will say it is sexual assault. But reality is little different. 99% of the relationships and affairs happen the same way. Again thin line and I don’t like to jump with the Internet/ media who will treat this situation literally. Even in affairs, people don’t ask Can I and starts kissing? They do it when the situation comes.
I’m not totally talking about Vikas’s case but taking hypothetical situation based on the reality and his case.

Yes agree. There is always a LINE. That line is different for any individual. Someone might carry on kissing and decide let’s get it on but then decide it’s a no. And they stop and tell the other person to stop which might confuse.
The other person must stop. If you have any ounce of respect for that other person you would stop. Whether you feel played or not you stop. People can change their minds. It’s everyone’s right. If you are not a criminal you would stop when asked or demanded to.

With this much amount of hatred, it’s difficult to change one’s mind. I’ll attempt to offer a counter-point nonetheless. Maybe, just maybe, his friendship with Bahl soured because of this incident only. His motivations to come out could be anything (let’s not forget, he’s the only one among a team of 3 who has spoken up for the girl) — everyone’s free to speculate on these matters — the hard-right which has been so irked by Kashyap’s remarks against them will obviously assume the worst about him. This is expected.
Some people will realize that Kashyap himself is a survivor of child abuse and therefore is more likely to defend the victim than play a game of one-upmanship with his partner/friend.

But Kangana herself did not say all of this about the Queen director when the film was being made! She’s not saying things about the scores of people she’s worked with in other films (she says things about some people sometimes). Is it believable that other than Vikas Bahl no one harassed her or forced her to do anything? Again I’m sympathetic. I’m not judging her one way or the other but her outrage too is selective. Others are selective, she is as well. Now I’m not pretending for a moment that these power equations are all equal. Maybe Kashyap is blameworthy here, I don’t know all the details. My point though is a different one (and I’ve made it earlier with respect to Hollywood as well). I think it’s comforting for us to always blame one side or the other in the latest sensationalist story that emerges. It’s good that people who deserve to be shamed are being shamed. but one doesn’t need to sympathize with such people to also accept that this is a culture. In such a culture even if you’re Kashyap you can’t survive if you have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy. As certainly as Kangana cannot survive. Dibakar Banerjee in that video I’ve posted elsewhere talks about the compromises he’s forced to make as a filmmaker. Doesn’t the same hold for him and others in every sense? Could he really say that he wouldn’t accepted financing for a film if the financier happened to be a sleazy character doing these sorts of things with women all the time? These examples could be multiplied infinitely. As for Kashyap saying many things yes people say a lot of things. We do all the time here too. But we’ve not been tested. Would we resign from our positions if we felt that our bosses were doing such things? I very much doubt it. Even if we were willing to what if we felt that most bosses were that way? Would we leave that line of work altogether? Again it’s very easy to jump on one particular case and take one side or the other but it’s harder to make that larger systemic argument. And ultimately aren’t we also implicated as the audience? Do we stop watching the films of particular actors/directors or whoever when we hear about their stories? There are many reasons people might not watch Salman’s films but let’s be honest — no one avoids them because of all his terrible behavior from his treatment of women to running over people on sidewalks. In a movie industry you have to make a 100 compromises every single day. There are people who don’t do these sorts of things personally but still work with others who do. How would they last otherwise? Finally, it’s certainly true that the bar is higher for you if you make certain kinds of statements. But this doesn’t mean that those who don’t get off scot-free. Still not defending Kashyap. Nor am I saying that Vikas Bahl shouldn’t be shamed. But let’s move beyond this stuff and get to the heart of the matter! Let’s take a poll — how many people are willing to stop watching films if people connected with them indulge in such behavior? Think we all the answer. And here it’s not adequate to say that we don’t know for a fact what happened in other cases. We don’t of course but unless we’re naive or worse we all know (or ought to know) that the level of sexual exploitation (not just of women but alright let’s stick to the subject for now) is always at stunningly high levels. And it’s also quite often of the most degrading kind. It’s simply institutionalized in many ways, a fact of life. And things are complicated. Everyone loved Queen (I personally wasn’t much of a fan but that’s another matter). The film is what it is and its director is also who he is! What can one say? The worst kinds of human beings sometimes produce the best artistic works. It’s a paradox of life. But if one is going to feel that strongly about this one should minimally start boycotting the films!

This is so true. I am always reminded of Roman Polanski whose work I do admire even considering the charges against him. I’ve lived by the adage that one should separate the art from the artist but at times it’s not so easy.

The same human mind that creates those very sensitive, probing, often ethically challenging works of art (not only in cinema) is also capable of all kinds of cruelty and depravity. Much as some great thinkers have defended horrible political regimes at points. These things happen. But yes Polanski’s is a textbook example.

thanks as always Qalandar..what’s also difficult is accepting not just the larger framework within which all of this happens but to go further still and figure out those ways of thinking (in a society) that are then always secretly enabling such exploitation. If you think of women in certain ways, describe them in certain ways, make jokes about them in certain ways, specially when it comes to women seen as being more emancipated, if you represent female sexuality in certain ways.. all of this doesn’t obviously create exploitation but it normalizes it to a certain degree. Because we already believe that women in certain situations either ought to know what they’re getting into and therefore don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt or they don’t deserve any sympathy if they nonetheless lived with it for the sake of a career. In other words a woman with desires, ambitions etc doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. The problem is if you object too much people think ‘you’re not lightening up, taking everything too seriously, hey it’s just a joke’ etc etc. There is the usual ‘oh things are so PC these days you can’t even joke about things’. Those ‘things’ then are racist or bigoted humor or the same directed against women and so on. I’m not crazy here. There is a lot of humor that is fine, I’m certainly not suggesting that everything be policed. But equally certain instances have to be called out as well.

On its day 1, it has managed to collect 2.80 crores at the box office. The trade experts had predicted an opening of 3 crores since the makers had promoted the film in every possible way and it also has family appeal. Apart from the promotions, the main key point of the film is the songs, everyone has liked the songs. Well, the opening day numbers are not that bad, but one has to see how it does on Saturday and Sunday.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it but is there a pattern in play here?
Young unattractive males (politically correct term) who’ve never had a girlfriend while growing up, suddenly find fame and fortune. And after they reach a particular stage where they can wield power, they exact revenge upon other girls. Somehow the multiple rejections from their past channel their pent-up frustrations to come out in this fashion.
Just to be very clear, I’m not a psychologist and this is pure conjecture on my part. And secondly, by applying a certain reasoning to this predatory behaviour, I’m in no way justifying it.

Continuing on the “European” cinema discussion, I guess such cinema was always part of Hindi entertainment right from the 1960’s. The only difference being that from the 60’s to the 90’s niche films never had the support and presence of A listers and adequate face value (barring exceptions like Hrishikesh Mukherjee films). It took an Aamir Khan to start backing niche urban multiplex content with DCH in 2001 and the rest like SRK (Swades, CDI), Hrithik (Lakshya, Guzaarish, ZNMD) and Akshay (Baby, Airlift) followed while the likes of Ranbir have made a career out of doing niche urban multiplex cinema. As for BOI’s claims of BARFI! being a one off, RDB, TZP, Chak De and ZNMD had released well before Barfi! while Airlift and Raazi have released thereafter, all of which are niche films starring A listers. Boi is pretty much caught on the backfoot here.

This is boxoffice thread and so boxoffice also matters to many. What are you gaining by coming to this thread? Same for toh curiosity for aamir fans and non aamir fans. Aamir fans want it to be big and succeed while non aamir fans want it to flop and fade away. The latter will come on board when toh flops like Race 3.

Most men are contented lot leading happy lives with their wives and no extramarital affairs. They are too busy earning their livelihood and providing for the family along with their wives who also contribute. Marriage provides a lot of stability. And the profession you choose also matters. If you are in show business, you become a bit careless even if you are married. VB looks like a habitual offender. Apart from temper, Nana does not look like a habitual offender. Men’s parties also must be a lot of bragging about conquests. And Hirani took it lightly about sanju having 300 plus. I am somewhat conservative about women allowing men into their rooms and have drinks too. One thing leads to another. Some areas are grey while some are clearly black and white.

That might be true but ideaunique I know more happily married men then prostitutes. I think all these allegations are confusing the sanctity of men. We are not all bad. These on the whole are 1/100 instances (even if that), rare in general and it’s that scenario where when you waited for a bus, 10 come along together and all of a sudden you think it’s the only mode of transportation around (and this is celebrity world where things are sensational). It’s untrue. Not every man is unfaithful. Some industries are worse & some countries too but worse is not more than 50% of the population!
Just find solutions or educate better. There is always one rotten tomatoe.

Rowan Atkinson is just that kind of actor. His demeanor is Bean. He’s awkward looking, languid and even in more serious TV shows he still displays a bit of Bean. Bean TV shows were a hoot in early 90’s. Johnny English, is what Bean meets James Bond – I can imagine this to be worse than Hello Brother.

Andhadhun is a crackerjack thriller, reminiscent of Hitcock’s best — Rope is probably the one its closest to, but it’s also a deeply disturbing film. Nimble footed and full of twists & turns, it’s quite possibly the darkest black comedy I’ve seen in years. Sriram Raghavan, in his inimitable style, pens a love letter to Bollywood of the 70s, mixing style and panache with characters that would not be out of place in Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly.
It’s a very unwholesome mix that also doubles up as nail-biting entertainment, and the climax is quintessential Hollywood — sharing space in the Shyamalan/Usual Suspects universe. One of the many interpretations of the climax is quite unsettling, which by the time it registers, does not spring an expression of shock or horror at all. It all makes perfect sense in world inhabited by the morally and ethically blind.
“I enjoy playing the audience like a piano,” Hitchcock once famously said. Raghavan makes that metaphor come alive by using the piano, throughout the film, as a reminder of how skilfully he’s playing us. This film, in short, is simply unmissable. In theatres, that is.

This is quite a good phase for Bollywood movies. Within a few weeks we’ve had Manmarziyan and Andhadhun, with Patakha (haven’t seen this) sandwiched in between. From the soul-nourishing freshness of Manmarziyan, to the soul-crushing dread of Andhadhun, they cover quite a wide spectrum too!

Sorry, I couldn’t reply earlier.
Regarding performances, this isn’t a performance-oriented film, per se. There is not much dramatic depth in the story, in the conventional sense at least, and being a thriller and all, there isn’t enough space to breathe and reflect — essential qualities for enabling nuanced performances.
That said, Tabu is quite good in her role. In a gender reversal of sorts, she plays the wisecracking, cynical, prototype noir character, even if she’s supposed to be playing the role of a femme fatale. This is actually refreshing.
Ayushmann has a very affable personality and he provides able support. Perhaps keeping the final twist in mind, his genial appearance is a good fit.
Radhika Apte, unfortunately, does not have much to do but is quite effortless in her small role.
There is a nice tribute to Anil Dhawan in the film, with a dash of 70s nostalgia thrown in. All for good effect though.

Honestly I need to watch Andhadhun again. Not because I did not find it a very good film , but i was in a theater filed with dumbfuck idiots who bring children along who just cannot keep quiet.
My impression is I watched a very involving film filled with surprises and where the twists are met with howling audience members, which I cannot recall in a thriller at least
I suggest waching it in isolation .. this one requires focus, coz I suspect there is clever, very clever writing that has gone into it

watched Andhadhun…..Saket has written a very good note abote for it…..I don’t feel like adding much there….superb movie and keeps on the edge till the last scene…..woah! what performances….Tabu as always towers above everything here….Ayushman has an excellent script-sense although he is just an okay performer but he is a smart actor…..SR as a director gets 10/10 here….what a crisp screenplay! i think in this genre….this is the finest film to come out in Hindi in last what 5 or 10 years??? can’t remember anything closer to this….go watch it guys….

Radhika Apte is fantastic in the role she gets here…..even small characters leave their impact……surprisingly songs are good here and well placed here….my choice of lead male actor would have been different here though…..IMDB rating is at a staggering 9.2 at the moment…

It’s a prickly spot for BOI. Just last week Sui Dhaaga did double on Sunday to Friday and now Andhadhun has done thrice with a lower screen count. Andhadhun seems like a clear winner here. It will go on to make 40Cr, maybe 50 Cr. Hard to predict. Badhai Ho is also releasing, seems until TOH these 2 films will probably do solid business.

Andhadhun came out the top film on Sunday with collections of 7 crore nett on Sunday. The film has gone ahead of Venom despite a much weaker start compared to that film. The film has jumped around 110% on Saturday and consolidated with 40% growth on Sunday. The weekend is ordinary but the trend is excellent and it depends on how the film holds from here on.
The film has grossed over 14 crore nett and it should see a good Monday hold going by weekend trend and the target should be to be at least around the Friday figure. The weekend collections of Andhadhun are as follows.
Friday – 2,35,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 5,00,00,000 apprx
Sunday – 7,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 14,35,00,000 apprx

Loveyatri collected a poor 6.75 crore nett in its first weekend which is less than half of Andhadhun. There was some decent growth on Sunday especially in Gujarat but thats not going to make much of a difference as the weekend is too low and weekday occupancy will be very low making it tough for the film to go anywhere. The collections of Loveyatri till date are as follows.
Friday – 1,90,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 2,10,00,000 apprx
Sunday – 2,75,00,000 apprx
TOTAL – 6,75,00,000 apprx
Venom had the best weekend of all the films at 15.50 crore nett which is a respectable weekend but going by the trend its unlikely the film can compete with Andhadhun in the longer run and despite better collections over the weekend it will eventually go behind Andhadhun. Saturday – 5,25,00,000 apprx

Judwaa 2 was a travesty. And im being kind. The fact that it got away with jokes on molestation in the name of humour and likes of BOI defending such films as cinema catering to Indian sensibilities is so pathetic it isnt even funny. Indian streaming platform Hotstar has tied up with HOOQ, a South Asian video-on-demand service, to expand its slate of international titles. The deal will give Hotstar’s premium users access to films from Warner Bros, Miramax, Sony Pictures and Lionsgate, Variety reported.
While the deal was announced on Monday, 20 television series are already being streamed on Hotstar in partnership with HOOQ, as NDTV reported last week. These include The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Arrow, The Oath and The Goldbergs. Watching A Star is Born tonight, but can’t say I have any desire to watch Venom — never liked this character, but this movie version seems to have utterly eviscerated his Spiderman-history, making him a “stand-alone”; just violates the character’s integrity (i.e. this is NOT the kind of adaptation/departure that changes things but is true to the spirit — e.g. Netflix’s Daredevil); the whole motivation for Eddie Brock’s character (as well as that of the symbiote who binds with him), is that love-turned-to-loathing relationship with Peter Parker/Spiderman. I suppose this is par for the course with the BS Marvel often pulls (including in the comics; DC is much better on thus front) but still pretty annoying.

I’m just relieved it’s a “regular” film that doesn’t feature any superheros or sci-fi! Honestly, Hollywood (especially in comparison with how wonderful the best of American TV is these days) is a cultural and artistic desert. When you consider the resources and talent available, Hollywood might be worse than Bollywood!

Completely agree — honestly the only thing worth watching in several years on this front has been Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones (only saw first season), and among the movies, Wonder Woman and Black Panther. I’ve skipped most of them so perhaps there are other good ones I’ve missed…

Yaar, Andhadhun is not playing in NYC, and New Jersey is a bit of a hike (I’d do it for certain Tamil films, but will sadly wait until it shows up on Netflix or Amazon)…it’s really unfortunate, as most of the prior Raghavan films (with the exception of Jonny Gaddar) have been screened here.

Well the invasion of South Indian films is a reality. My local has only 2 Indian films on – 96 and the Ratnam one. The other cinema, a good 30 mins away has these 2 plus Andhadhun, Sui Dhaaga and a Punjabi film.
Tastes or customer base has changed a lot in a couple of years.
I’m sure TOH will have a record number of shows – 20+ easily daily.

I’m pretty sure there is a chain of cinemas close to Southall which only screens Indian movies. Reading is good for Hindi films too. I saw Talaash in Reading.

I’ve been to Reading once and watched a film there. Southall, not anymore. In my area you have Feltham, Harrow, Wembley…these are very heavily populated with Indians and show films. Feltham is the most well known. It will be on lock down when TOH arrives. I have a Cineworld on my road, 5 mins walk…but shows less frequent.

I remember driving 50 miles to see any Hindi movie..When K3G played in near by theatre..there was a long line to get into cinema and regular folks were asking why this line…Now I live where I can see any Indian movie quite easily..
Having said that..there was no assigned seating in regular halls…Only halls where they catered Indian crowd had assigned seatings…now I see many regular halls have assigned seating…

You can’t beat the experience of watching a film in India. I really miss the crowds, the seeti taalis even in high-end multiplexes. Single screens are even more fun!
The flip side is watching Anurag Kashyap’s movies in India. I remember watching Gulaal with 12-13 people in the theater. Out of which we, as a group, contributed 6.

How dare the European film become a hit?
Andhadhun is on course to emerge a HIT film as it records good collections on Monday. The film is heading towards a good 30-40% jump as compared to the first day. The collections of the film will be in the 3.25 crore nett region which takes the film to over 17.50 crore nett in four days.
The total is not much but now the film will start making ground over the next few weeks. The film has been liked by the high end multiplex crowd in metros like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. It was a holiday in Kolkata on Monday and next week will be a prolonged holiday which will ensure Kolkata also scores big for the film.
Its the same crowd that takes films like Neerja and Kapoor & Sons to good numbers and even though appreciation is very limited to the metros it is not to difficult to get 50 lakh footfalls when these metros take to a film. The above films easily went higher than 50 lakh footfalls as the former had tax exemption while the latter had music but for Andhadhun even 50 lakh footfalls will see just a little short of Neerja and Kapoor & Sons due to a rise in ticket prices and reduction tax due to GST.
The core Hindi film crowd has not come on board but that is expected and the film does not really need it either to become a HIT. The first week should easily cross 25 crore nett from here and Friday does not have major competition. It will be the second Friday which should confirm HIT status if it holds well.

There is a lot to digest from Andhadhun. I did really like the long sequence, very masterful, and already referred to elsewhere on this blog, I liked how it plays with us as the audience. We are so used to seeing everything in a hindi film. Everything is usually spoonfed to us in other standard bollywood flicks. Action is done in slow motion. Twists are explained and replayed. But this sequence is like a tongue in cheek wink at us. It’s like “look at you sitting there, expecting us to tell you everything, but hey what do you really know eh?”. And every revelation in this sequence is like a kick in our balls. It also plays with what we see. We are not allowed to see everything. We desperately want to get the full details of what is going on. But we can’t. We are now the blind ones.

Andhadhun- A perfect first half, followed by a decent 2nd half. And an open ending, making one curious of all possibilities. It has tremendous repeat value as a thriller film. Must have been a tough film to make and too keep the audiences engaged till the end credits. But, again i felt the movie kinda slumped after the great first half.

Rani is all set to entertain the Chinese audiences with her acting and will be in China from 7th to 12th of October. During that time, she will be touring 5 major cities in China that include, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu. The promotions for the movie are in full swing.

I am really looking forward to watching Andhadhun and I’m happy for all the talented actors involved. I loved Ek Haseena Thi and Johnny Gaddar and finally this is one more Sriram Raghavan movie that I’m interested in watching on the big screen. On a different note, it’s been amusing to see Radhika Apte’s trajectory from rustic every woman in Shor to the cool, edgy, intellectual sex symbol that she is considered today.

Stree Beats Many 300 Crore Plus Films In Week Five

Stree continued to compete with the biggest films in week five also. The film had recorded the tenth biggest fourth week of all time and has now recorded the twelfth biggest fifth week of all time. The fifth week collections are higher than many of the 300 crore nett plus films like Sanju, PK, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan.
It is again probably the smallest film in the chart below though a case can be made for Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par which had limited budgets and were a decade back but eventually those films also had big stars.

As I said I think Ghulaami is the best overall commercial Hindi film of the last 35 years or so. On Ardh Satya I’m not the greatest fan of the film.
On GF let’s say he left while he had his sanity intact..

To add to this here (and I can’t remember whether I said this in any of those older notes) Dutta’s Rajasthan vision is essentially an anarchic one. In contrast his war films are usually exactly the opposite (barring the first half of Refugee, in the second half this too becomes a bit of a sell-out), they’re about preserving the ‘order’ of the state. This is a considerable loss as far as I’m concerned but in any case Dutta argues against his own history here or at least the sequence that runs from Ghulami through Batwara (Kshatriya, the film that follows is not serious enough). I’d go further here. I think all great visions of ‘war’ are also partly anarchic ones. otherwise they’re utterly boring. I can think of very many movies around the world that attest to this idea but an obvious example is Apocalypse Now (the redux version is even better). The same goes for literary works. To make of war simply an extension of the nationalist fiction is certainly understandable and in a way comes with the terrain (at least the modern nation-state terrain) but it is precisely for this reason ‘boring’. The human stories of war on the other hand, or all its nihilistic elements, or for that matter the carnage associated with it — all of this makes even ‘good’ wars (those that seem justifiable from most perspectives) suspect or at least ‘tragic’. Everything Border argues for is too easy (including the ending), what is complicated is the Refugee (again the first half, not the second where Dutta absurdly cancels out the essential premise of the film) and moreso the world of Ghulami and beyond. Here Dutta does advance a certain notion of valor and machismo which is of course easy in its own way but the fact that all of this comes about in a kind of either crumbling order or one where older values seem utterly deconstructed or exposed without new ones having taken their place, all of this dilutes that charge a bit. One cannot read Ghulami as either simply supporting nationalist fictions or for that matter those martial values associated with Rajasthan (rightly or wrong). Caste lies at the heart of this world. The ‘new’ in this world cannot come forth till caste is thoroughly dismantled. It is a truth we continue to repress in contemporary India. We continue to pretend it does not exist or refuse to recognize all its dimensions. So much about #metoo also isn’t comprehensible in Indian terms without accounting for caste. This could be a whole different discussion. On a related note Lawaaris, in my view Bachchan’s most important film in the 80s, also has caste as a central reference point.

What a superb note — and that last bit about caste has its analogs even in the national movement, with only Ambedkar essentially arguing for that thorough dismantling, and Nehru/Gandhi/Patel all on the side of “reform” (which was perhaps more realistic given where so much of the pubic is, but also made meaningful change UNrealistic, in that the rhetoric of reform is hand in glove with more or less conservative dispensations (that even this was attacked as crazily out there says more about where the critics were, than about the agenda)). Back to the film, your initial point gets to (and in a far more eloquent way than I could have managed) the distinction between the “epic” and the (what should I call it?) prosaic modes that I was getting at in that first link. The genre of Border, as with most Hollywood films of this sort (whether the film is good or bad is a separate question), is the genre of the spectacle, the comforting fiction, a story that essentially points in only one direction; with Ghulami (and in this narrow sense, Batwara is an even better example), the narrative can be read multiple ways, or certainly more ways than Border can be read, with characters that don’t slot as easily (Naseer’s character in the earlier film; or Shammi Kapoor’s, Mohsin Khan’s, or Vinod Khanna’s in the later one, come to mind). Another way to think about this is that Border is, if we must insist on reading it as an epic, more akin to the Tulsidas Ramayana; Ghulami is more Homeric, or perhaps even more like Valmiki’s Ramayana — i.e. there are obvious baddies in this world (so not completely Homeric), but the achievements of heroism are several shades more ambiguous than in Tulsidas’ epic. Batwara is even more Homeric — in the sense of less judgmental — as I recall it (haven’t seen it in many years), but obviously significantly lesser than Ghulami as a film. The contrast with films like Border is striking, as is the contrast with films like Eklavya, that were crying out for epic treatment but weren’t directed by someone with the right sensibility.
On Refugee, the second half was a crime — as a stand-alone film it would have been un-objectionable but it made no sense coming after that first half (itself Dutta’s best work since Batwara).

Another film to re-visit here is the politically prescient Ganga ki Saugandh — far far inferior to, and much less interesting than, the great Dutta films, but worth checking out (for, among other reasons, because Bachchan was hardly ever on this terrain, before or since; the first Bachchan in Adalat comes to mind, but not much else). It’s a film that is hardly seen in urban circles these days but was a huge hit in 1978, and was culturally resonant in many parts of the country in a way not open to (e.g.) a more urbane film like Don. Heck even TODAY it is very rare to show a Brahmin-Dalit love story (even if it’s the female who is Dalit, i.e. not as “provocative” in our sorry culture as the other way around), much less back in 1978, and all woven together into a narrative of solidarity across communal/caste lines, in the cause of social justice. Amitabh’s versatility was, of course one notes this for the umpteenth time, as ever, a wonder to behold…

Marginal propensity to consume Salman at home is at an all-time high for India. They don’t have the funds to go to cinema. Basically these are lazy people not contributing to the economy anymore. They wait for Salman films to hit the TV or they confuse Big Boss with his films. They watch his trailers on YouTube though, at least they are paying broadband connection fees.

Of course. They will only take into account what suits their narrative. Even Golmaal Returns will over time have more viewership but ‘hey that’s a comedy, it’s what Indian’s watch so it doesn’t count’ but Dangal can be compared to TZH because they are like for like. LOL. Compare Sultan with Dangal and wait for TOH to compare it with TZH.
