    • All films will play each other in each of their respective groups, once this is over the top 2 will progress from each group.

Eg Deewane Vs Dil Se then on Monday Deewane Vs Veer Zaara etc

Your vote equals 1 point. By the end of the group stage I’ll tally the points. Right now Dil Se and Veer Zaara are leading Group 1!

  6. I liked only DDLJ, Deewana, Josh, Paheli, Baadshah.and Baazigar. I just cant pretend to like the other movies. so I will watch the fun and results. Even with other stars, I like very few movies of them. Perhaps below 5.

    • Wow I found it hard to set this up. Neutrally speaking SRK has more than 32 films that could make this tournament work.

Will it be DDLJ VS DIL SE in the final….hmmm. Or will Swades spring a shock win! Or will Chak De hit the winning score! I’m very excited in this tournament. Group 2 is probably the Group of Death. Wouldn’t want to be Don 2!!!!! Easily Paheli or Baadshah could have made the World Cup but they had a very poor qualification round unfortunately. Jab Harry Met Sejal got walloped around.

  7. So at this point one can list any number of films?

    Like

    • No no. The matches are in the post. The 32 films I have selected already -they don’t change. You have to name your winner. It’s like every teams first match of the World Cup. Then we will have the 2nd and the final third match. Then tally up the 8 tables. Top 2 proceed where I will randomly pick the 8 2nd round matches, then commence to QF, then SF then F.

      • Wikipedia has 90 films listed as starring SRK. I have narrowed it down to 32. I figure not many fans of Maya Memsaab and obviously there may be fans of Hey Raam or Paheli but I’ll be here all day trying to get this going without some intervention. Hence a pre determined list of 32 films split into 8 GROUPS of 4.

The allocation of groups was random but highly sophisticated!

I think Jeeves and Amit have got it right.

        Hope it’s clear.

      • Got it. Thanks

  8. Example as of 3 voters (Jeeves, Amit and I)
    Group 1 standings after 1 match;
    Veer Zaara = 3
    Dil Se = 2
    Deewana = 1
    Ra.One = 0

So Veer Zaara & Dil Se would progress and Deewana & Ra.One would be eliminated. Hence voting is crucial if you like Deewana & Ra.One over Dil Se & Veer Zaara respectively. Obviously Veer Zaara still has a match with Dil Se & Ra.One to come so things can change, the more voters the more interesting (I hope).

    • I would have included Koyla and Josh from the longer list! admittedly most people don’t think about these anymore.

      Like

      • Unfortunately I tried my best to eliminate my personal preferences. Josh could have replaced any number of films. I could be here all day selecting 32 with everyone’s input!

  9. This is a bakwaas cup with bakwaas films from a bakwaas star. Period.

    • Even if the star is credible this world cup wont take off. The films span over many years. And the initial enthusiasm wears off. We all have very strong likes and dislikes.

    • just like in the opening stages of a WC you have many weak teams!

      Like

      • Exactly. The group stages ‘should’ be a formality but an odd shock is possible. Defining the odd shock here might be tough but maybe a big blockbuster like KKHH not getting through or something like Chalte Chalte creeping through might be a shock!

It’s just fun and games! The real fun is the knockouts! If you play fair you will consider all aspects of the film – I’ve seen this played in other formats i.e sports and a ‘particular’ matchup ‘can’ cause an upset.

So if you did this with tennis you might find Djokovic knocking out Federer or in cricket Dravid knocking out Tendulkar.

But playing fair is important. I guess here it might be a bit more black and white. SRK’s fans have yet to speak. So let’s see.

We already have advocates for Josh but seriously is that film winning ‘this’ World Cup?!?!?!?

  15. Do you plan to do this with other actors/actresses as well? I hope you do. Cuz as a beginning it is kinda sadistic to start with SRK!

Not sure how you do this with Aamir since he has probably done 32 movies in his career!

      Like

    • I shall of course but my Bollywood history begins in late 80’s. Happy to set up for those actors/actresses before that period with some help!

      • since this is your project you should stay with the history you’re most familiar with..

        • Ha that’s properly throwing me under the bus…

I can easily do Aamir, Salman, Hrithik, Abhishek, Ranbir, Big B post 98. Take a stab at Akshay’s, Devgnn and others. Let’s see where this goes first as NG use to do stuff like this.

          Like

        • I agree there’s enough action over the last two decades or more. Also you could do a few of the major actresses.

I’ll certainly help if you want to do it for older stuff.. not an issue, though barring Bachchan’s older films I doubt such a ‘Cup’ would be doable for other actors. Not sure how many people here have seen the older stuff. I could be wrong.

  18. So far Veer Zaara, Swades, KANK, Chennai Express, CDI, OSO have a 100% record from voters. Some of these might be due to opposition faced being very weak. Good start for these films.

The Don franchise has not scored yet, nor Ra.One, Fan, JTHJ or Dilwale.

Some close battles too. Mohabbatein/Darr 4-4. A few 5-3’s floating around. Mohabbatein and Darr – good match (like the pre DDLJ Vs post DDLJ battle of star).

I think I will have a lot of circumstantial evidence to prosecute a lot of you.

  36. Again this tournament is purely about which film you prefer over the other and seeing where that ends up. You don’t have to ‘like’ the movie at all and picking the lesser of two evils is fine.

  37. There are only 2 srk films that i can sit thru in one seating. Swades and Chak De India. Good enough films to tolerate srk’s overacting. Out of these two, my vote will anyday go to CDI – not only because it has less of him but also because Swades is extremely slow paced to the point of being a fault.

    • Dil Se is easily the best film SRK has done. Nothing else is even close. Also the best Ratnam has done in Hindi probably along with Raavan. But my vote would go to Dil Se.

      • Agree. Dil Se is probably the only SRK film that I can think about watching again.

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is another one.

        • I’ve always felt that SRK was very suited for the KHKN part and could have explored that terrain a bit more. Unfortunately once he became big that was never too likely to happen, and in fairness the audience also doesn’t like downsized stars too much. But this film has retained its appeal.

          Liked by 1 person

      • I have fond memories of watching Roja/Bombay in dubbed versions. Dont remember much about Dil Se except for the songs. Maybe because it was with Srk during his horrendous Ddlj/Dtph/Kkhh phase. Will revisit it sometime. But I will any day spend my time watching Guru than revisit an Srk film from nineties (even if it was by ratnam)!

        Like

    • lol I don’t get the extreme view on SRK’s acting. It isn’t like he is sallu or suniel shetty in this department! I agree he can ham his way thru a lot of emotional scenes but for the most part his acting isn’t the weak link (although recently I can’t say that to be true) in his movies.

The crowd roared when Group 6 and 8 were announced. It is still unclear how Mela got to this stage – Filmfare are investigating allegations that Aamir Khan sent the required nomination form to them for Mela. They found forms with his signature on them for Love Love Love & Awwal Number but it appears these were forged by Salman Khan. The case continues…

  50. Latest Standings updated in the post after votes from today…
Jeeves, cooldude, Abzee, Shalini, Bob Cristo – missing your round 2 and 3 votes.

Voting closing tomorrow at 8PM GMT and Round of 16 will be confirmed for voting! New voters still welcome 🙂

    As things stand;

Group 1- Dil Se looks a clear winner. Deewana is chasing Veer Zaara for 2nd
Group 2 – Swades is in the clear. KKHH one of SRK’s biggest blockbusters is being put to the sword by Baazigar
Group 3 – Darr, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Mohabbatein in that order are all in with a shout of qualification
Group 4 – Another big blockbuster K3G is struggling and is facing an early exit. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa coasting through with Chennai Express
Group 5 – Chak De! India is through. Devdas is 1 vote ahead of Karan Arjun! Too close to call!
Group 6 – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is sailing through while Chalte Chalte attempts to shock Om Shanti Om
Group 7 – A very tough group, looks like Rab Ne Bana De Jodi is heading out. Pardes, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Dear Zindagi all fighting hard for 2 spots
Group 8 – My Name Is Khan is out. Dil To Pagal Hai. Raees & Main Hoo Naa fighting it out till death!(aamirsfan vote is crucial for Main Hoo Naa’s hopes!)

      • Not a surprise that only 2 films currently in qualifying positions are from the last 10 years – Raees & Chennai Express. 6/8 group leaders are 90’s film’s!

        Like

        • Also that other point is being made so far (and I expect more of this in future voting) — ultimately the better films survive because these can be revisited. The regular stuff unless it’s exceptionally entertaining comes with an expiry date. So here we see some better films that SRK has done either keeping up with or beating more successful ones.

          Like

        • Of SRK’s regular stuff only DDLJ stands a chance here. Stuff like KKHH, K3G, KANK, MNIK, RNBDJ, Mohabbatein have expired. Stuff like Darr & Baazigar have more shell life.

He’s had a very split career. His peak phase 95-07 is being dominated by his early phase & his experimental films like Dil Se, Swades & CDI. Vast majority of things post CDI are a mess. Ra.One, JTHJ, Dilwale, Fan & My Name Is Khan are duds obviously according to a very small sample of votes here. The Don’s haven’t clicked.

          Like

        • And this is true for every actor. Would Fanaa beat Talaash in a vote or the other way around? I think we know the answer. Dil was such a blockbuster when it released but it probably wouldn’t beat AAA in a vote, let alone Sarfarosh. This is why the actor that has a better body of work always does better in historical terms. if the same actor can also get great success in the present like Aamir that’s the best of both worlds.

        • Dil Se was a disaster in 98 in India but in UK it was hugely popular. Of course it was quickly followed by KKHH which ran for 6 months in places. From that point till the late 00’s, SRK dominated UK. Even his ‘average’ India successes would dominate the UK market. He still has a huge fan club here but it’s shrunk.

Dil Se was the first Indian movie to be in the Top 10 opening weekend list in UK such was it’s popularity. From Wikipedia
The film became the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts.[6] Even two months after its release in September 1998 the film was still screened on five screens, five times per day with an average of 3000 spectators across all screens in the Cineworld complex in Feltham, West London.[18]

That was my local theatre at the time so it was doing huge business. This complex is just full of Indian films now. If anyone is in London traveling and wants to experience the craze of Indian films here go to this complex – though not the same as 2 decades ago.

I watched KKHH twice in 1 week in the cinema in 98. I can’t stand it now, except for music. I might pick it over Dil Se if they meet though! I found Dil Se boring back in 98. But I’ve never revisited it. So it would be unfair of me to pick a film I watched once & disliked over one I watched a few times, can’t stand now but could tolerate.

        • You should definitely revisit Dil Se. It’s on Netflix too! The thing though is that this is a first generation DVD and it’s very inadequate, doesn’t do justice to its visuals. but still you should check it out. On the rest yeah I remember it did very well in the UK, it did well enough here too. And you’re quite right. SRK in those days was Bachchanesque in the overseas territories, certainly in the US even the average films would still outgross everyone else’s. I saw Dil Se 3 times when it released! But even in India it was stable in some metros at the rather low end. Not enough to make a difference but there was a certain segment of the audience that liked it.

  58. Barring DDLJ some ‘traditional’ or ‘popular’ big hits (that is the quintessential SRK film) went out in the groups like KKHH, K3G, Mohabbatein, Karan Arjun, OSO and RNBDJ. Maybe we missed the traditional SRK vote here!

    Like

    • Actually I think the results would not vary much even with the traditional SRK fan. Unless it was an anonymous thing. Because all those SRK fans were the first to call Swades the greatest film ever (alright I’m exaggerating a little) the moment SRK did it. The same for some other half-sensible attempts. Once the conversation changed and the prestige film became important it was no longer enough to say that SRK had the biggest grossers. The same thing happened much more with CDI. Nothing wrong with the film but it was horribly overrated. And of course this happens elsewhere too. So the Aamir fans have always been absurdly unkind on Fanaa and presented it as the worst kind of commercial deal. I actually think Fanaa is way better than almost most of SRK’s key Yashraj/Johar films. Even otherwise it’s a perfectly solid effort. But yes it’s not Lagaan or DCH or RDB or TZP or whatever. In the same sense Ghajini gets a rough ride (though the box office story makes up for it somewhat since even Aamir fans are quite happy to beat others with the same cudgels that certainly the SRK fans used against them). But to get back to the original point it would be hard to defend many of SRK’s iconic (at the time) films publicly today! Secret voting is another matter.

On a related note things have come indeed full circle with TOH. The biggest film since K3G (incidentally a problem for the anti-Bachchan folks as well, if he’s nobody why does he keep showing up in these ‘biggest’ efforts?!) capping off a whole sequence that begins with Lagaan. The big prestige moment (Oscar buzz et al), then all the other films in the same sense. For a while one could still make the claim that he didn’t have the biggest ones. But then with Ghajini and 3I everything changed and now it’s at the point where even a subject like Dangal beats everything in sight. The lesson to be drawn is the obvious one.. you can never tell, things change dramatically sometimes. What SRK fan in the 90s or even a bit beyond expect this kind of Aamir career (or for that matter the one Salman has had for almost a decade now)? No one else did either. Which is why some humility is not a bad thing!

      Liked by 2 people

      • Tastes and preferences change. I didn’t find KKHH offensive when I first watched it. It was a perfectly fine romantic film but being a teenager made a big difference in liking it. Come K3G time I could not bare that kind of film but I didn’t mind Mohabbatein. Then that truly horrible phase of Devdas, KHNH & KANK. Swades & CDI were like welcome relief.

Now I can’t stand KKHH. At least with these films like KKHH, K3G, DTPH etc, music still is fine. I’d listen to that over most if not all albums this year! Mainly because music probably leaves a bigger shell life overall. Most of my music listening is still mainly 90’s/00’s – very little from current decade.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I probably wouldn’t have guessed it before Lagaan but I still think Aamir was doing much the better films through the 90’s than SRK and Salman. He just wasn’t getting the box office reward. It’s hardly even a debate now which films have a greater shell life.

        Like

      • Agree that Fanaa is a lot better than any of srk’s cringeworthy romantic chick-flicks. Also agree that Ghaijini is a lot better than all those inane southern remakes by salman.

BUT thats very low standards to compare with, aint it?

Once you deliver Lagaan and TZP and Dangal and whatever, you cant compare with some shitty stuff (which may be temporarily popular) and feel good about it.

        • True, I am being a bit unfair to the film: but yes the younger couples were experienced by me as a loss every time they showed up on screen (I still find those stretches unbearable and can’t watch the film end to end). But even in the other part SRK was so pathetic and inadequate it just spoiled the film’s balance.

          Like

        • Mohabbatein is pretty good IMO. Love the backstory here. I prefer this film to K3G. The length in proceedings is created by the 3 love stories. The Uday/Shamita track is worthy of chopping off. The other 2 are fine, better acted.

The Bachchan/SRK scenes are neat. This is one of SRK’s films I could easily watch – even for him! The only perverse thing is his wardrobe for Humko Humise Chura Lo. I didn’t like that and the ridiculous way Aishwarya tops herself off! Barring that song I don’t care much else for the soundtrack. I love the way he ‘informs’ Big B why he’s the loser in this battle!

But Chopra’s settings are homely and not this jet setting fake NRI world! Even London home in DDLJ is very realistic, a small terraced home with wooden fire – very simple and reality. With Johar that would be some huge Buckingham Palace with gazillions of fire places with pictures of parents shrouded above diamond mantle’s! And people go to Starbucks on the way back home – buy their coffee then jump in a plane to arrive back to a grand open gathering of family to say congratulations for making it through one more day at work!

I’m in no hurry to wrap up SRK. He’s the third biggest superstar of the current generation and deserves some kudos for winning bronze. He was my starter. Aamir will be main course. You can skip dessert if you want as it’s Salman. This is done in standing order at the Olympic ceremony!

Swades – one of his best performances, lovely album, Chalte Chalte ok film not in Swades’ league
Darr – special personal meaning, I fancied a girl called Kiran 🙂 (desperate for KANK to be eliminated), KANK needs to go simple as that, trash has got too far IMHO!
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge – cannot ignore the history, blockbuster songs, KHKN unlucky seen it once liked it but not again unlike DDLJ

In fact inclusive DDLJ, pre DDLJ SRK is very promising as a star-actor with the kind of films he did. Afterwards it’s the odd film here or there I like – like 5 films in 20+ years I could watch.

He was displaying ishq ki junooniyat, for lack of a better term in english, and thus his performance becomes perfectly suited for the role.

    • Oh well, at least it got to the semis.. not bad for a box office failure.. and it’s being upended by another box office disappointment.. one of the things your ‘tournament’ has established is precisely some of the stuff we often discuss here. Over time the better stuff survives. Of SRK’s most iconic films only the absolute DDLJ made it to the final 4. The final should be interesting. If Swades were to win it would underline the point even more.

      • For me Swades is one of the high points of SRK’s body of work, but — leaving the question of ideology aside — it would be hard for me to pick it over DDLJ: the film is very well made, and while the genre is a pathetic one, it’s kinda flawless. Hard for me to vote against it in favor of the well-meaning but kinda “flat” Swades.

        • fair point.. but then even the best film relative to genre is not necessarily the ‘better’ film. Having said that I did use this logic a couple of times when I voted for DDLJ. But I wouldn’t be able to apply it with respect to Dil Se. Yes DDLJ-Swades is a bit tougher, I grant you that.

          Like

        • Yeah I too would not be able to apply it to Dil Se. But then again, if I use the logic of which one I saw in the cinema the most times, Dil Se > DDLJ > Swades. Actually the first two were tied at 5 but only because Dil Se didn’t last that long in the cinemas here (plus with DDLJ several of those were part of family trips to the cinema; with Dil Se it was all me wanting to go). 😊

          Like

        • If I applied the logic of which I’ve seen most I’d be embarrassed to declare my winner. So I’m not using this logic.

With this final 4, DDLJ was my winner any combination. Unfortunately Baazigar & CDI are out – one of those 2 would be my overall winner.

        • On the contrary, I have extreme ideological issues with DDLJ. Sucking up to a dissenting father-in-law and his entire weird extended family is not everyone’s cup of tea! QSQT’s runaway solution has more guts at display.

Swades is at a different level ideologically. I would any day watch Swades than catch up with DDLJ.

          Like

        • Yes for sure: QSQT is one of the all time great Hindi love stories, and MUCH less dated, and as you note non-conformist, than DDLJ. Not just sucking up, the film valorises the hero’s deceit, and “cheats” by making the fiancé an asshole. Parades later on did this as well, and an attempted rapist to boot.

          Like

        • On DDLJ I would pick Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyar Sajna as my favourite song by a distance in a great romantic album. The picturisation is lovely too. I’m not as big a fan of the more popular Tujhe Dekha To and Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna. I’ll probably be a minority here but Ho Gaya I think is amongst my top 5 romantic tracks from the last 30 years.

        • Oh shit. Man even if ARR is out of it I might have to think about “Tose Naina Laage Piya Saanvre” from Anwar (I wish Mithoon had done more in his career!). On DDLJ I think the QSQT songs have retained their freshness to a greater extent — also Anand Milind’s “Pehla Nasha” from JJWS.

          Like

        • Every song in QSQT I cherish, my favourite is Ghazab Ka Hai Din. JJWS I only really like Pehla Nasha. The rest of the album I find par the course. QSQT > DDLJ > JJWS music wise for me. Though Pehla Nasha is probably my favourite song from all albums combined.

But I always remember this film thinking it’s quite offbeat, now when I watch it, it is quite commercial but still quite uncomfortable at points. Manisha Koirala lights this film up, the camera is very clever in capturing her fair features. I love Priety Zinta too, so intrusive & spunky. SRK has that Rahul element but it’s more in the Pardes level, it’s bearable & much more endearing.

It’s not going to swing my vote though. Easily Ratnam’s best Hindi film. The soundtrack, each song with a different voice is amongst the best. The film has repeat value, watching it now I’m surprised it didn’t do well. Considering KKHH follows 2 months later this is quite a year for SRK.

        • Incidentally one other thing that’s structurally important for the film (and Ratnam talked about this at the time) is that it’s partially modeled on the seven stages of love in Sufi lore. These run from interest/attraction to love to worship and eventual annihilation (of the self). As in most mystical traditions divine love or the pursuit of the same is often present in a highly charged, erotic language. In a lot of these same sufi traditions the erotic love interest offers a pathway to that greater divine love. Even as ratnam tracks some of this he of course subverts it a great deal too. Incidentally the song Satrangi also follows in its own way this very same structure.

        • I think there are so many scenes that are memorable. Little things he does.
          1) Koirala at the radio station having to answer why she left SRK. The door is swinging back and forth letting light shine on her face and she looks amazing for it
          2) There is a scene in Ladakh where she drinks water and you can see SRK looking at through her space carefully filmed by the angle in her elbow bend
          3) SRK looking at her while she showers
          4) They secretly meet upstairs and hide behind the door while SRK plays her a scene from earlier in the film wrt to him courting her
          5) Zinta asking SRK point blank are you a virgin and his reaction

The film flows really well. Songs are cleverly used everywhere.

I am just wondering knowing the ending but not remembering what is to come and why they decide to commit suicide, the ending right now doesn’t make sense to me. But I’ll follow through tonight.

        • Those are all wonderful scenes, specially the first one you mention here. About the second half it must also be said that here the film starts running into some trouble. The first half is perfect. the second a bit messy. Part of the problem possibly is that Ratnam can keep things somewhat abstract in the first part of the film. The girl is a mystery, the physical sites are not named precisely (it seems to be a bit of a mixture of kashmir and the northeast), the same for the insurgent/terrorist group. And again the SRK character is still finding his bearings so the abstraction works. In the second half you have a precise city, Delhi. Even if Ratnam wonderfully inverts things so that Delhi becomes at least as unsettling a place as the one SRK has just visited (in fact moreso in some ways), the fact that now the film is a bit of a police procedural and depends on ‘specifics’, the abstract strokes of the film start conflicting a bit with this. Perhaps the film might have been better off restricting itself to the locales of the first half. Or keeping things more ‘local’. it is undoubtedly a powerful polemical move to shift the action to Delhi but this is achieved at a certain aesthetic cost.

        • The reason I prefer Dil Se over Swades is that I can remember more scenes from Dil Se, even when Swades is more recent movie of SRK I’ve seen.

        • I have a weakness for Swades too but I concede the point that it’s not a dynamic film at all. It has some real moments of empathy but it also has a great deal that’s confused and ideologically problematic (the imagining of Indian rural space as a ind of a ‘bozo land’.. with nice, well-meaning people who need to be ‘educated’ a bit.. even if the SRK character here himself undergoes a transformation — and I love the scene where he visits the hut and later the moment in the train — there’s an issue when the heartland/hinterland or what have you always comes across as a bit of a circus; the difference in Lagaan is that Bhuvan is part of this crowd.. and you have the British on the other side.. there is no other option and as an audience we are ‘with’ the Indians here whereas in Swades we are really with SRK’s character and have that sense of condescension.. leaving this aside the film should have been either a ‘nostalgia’ effort for the NRI or about its more essential subject..Gowariker tries to do different things thematically at different points..). In terms of craft there is not even a comparison between this film and Dil Se (but one could say this for many other films too). Again I’ve always been a fan of Swades but with these serious reservations. On the other hand with Dil Se I again might have some reservations but I see these as the problems sometimes generated by the authentic film. In other words with a certain kind of premise it’s hard to do justice to both the script and also indulge in commercial compromises. This has been the great struggle of Ratnam’s career over the last 20 years or so. But yes to get to your point even if one doesn’t like Dil Se as a whole there are tons of memorable moments.

This is a huge contrast from the careers of contemporaries like Aamir (remember we are already almost two decades removed from Lagan and well over a decade from RDB or what have you — heck as films like the very contemporary love stories we see these days underscore, something like QSQT seems more relevant to us today than DDLJ); not to mention the work of greater star-actors.

Anil Kapoor is another fellow who comes to mind: very very few of his films have survived the test of time (in fact even fewer than in the case of SRK).

Too much hyperbole around Swades here. The movie is an honest attempt but lacks good screenplay, definitely not a great movie. I am calorie conscious and not into too much sugar but DDLJ was what made SRK. A well made movie for that time even though cliched in some parts. Most of the parts actually work 😀

      • Blame Qalandar! He made me rethink my position yesterday. There are many films I’d easily pick over DDLJ including Dil Se. I like Swades a fair bit but what it gets right is perhaps not good enough for me to trounce DDLJ (incidentally I wouldn’t have chosen CDI over DDLJ either though I would have chosen quite a few Aamir films over it including Talaash). Put differently if a film is aspiring to be something more meaningful then it also has to live up to a higher bar. Now having said that DDLJ is the exception here. I would have picked Swades over DTPH, KKHH and so on. But Q is correct, DDLJ does get everything right. And ultimately this is about favorite films!

On that note fantastic work on this whole tournament. Can’t wait for the next one.

But other method could have a winner with lots of second preferential votes. You possibly can attach weights to position to take care of that first vote as 3.5, second vote as 2.25 third vote as 1.10 (or 1.0).

In final, you have 4 teams and people vote preferentially. One with most preferential vote will win.

You may put weights to positions
          1st – 5

Then Moserbaer did it as well though I’ve heard it’s not much of an improvement. I just checked out the Netflix transfer and it seems to be much better than what I remember from the original DVD. Prime doesn’t have it currently. Also notice they have an HD version available as a rental on youtube but I don’t know what the source is.

SRK returns to DDLJ mode when he’s fighting the bad guys and the film’s early touches are completely lost. I think Ratnam could have bypassed the whole sequence where SRK is kidnapped and just created a longer dialogue sequence on the day of the bombing between SRK and Manisha leading to their death. All the sequences in the hideout and hospital are kind of odd in the film. It’s a different film after that song & very quickly the pace is quicker. Didn’t suit the near flawless first half and a bit.

many people are voting for DDLJ. My premature conclusion is this.

yes there are movies that are not commercial hits at the time of their release but develop a following over the years. But ultimately the winner is a movie that resonates with everyone, beyond class, boundaries and sections of the trade (critics and audience alike). In Hindi cinema, Sholay, Mughal e Azam and Mother India still rule the roost when we talk about the best. And DDLJ falls in the category too!

I know many people are biased against the movie because of the genre. Blame SRK that he created a brand out of it and followed it up with vastly inferior works. Yashraj are equally responsible for giving DDLJ references in many movies that followed, which became rather irritating after a while. however, it its entirety, DDLJ is commercial Hindi cinema at its best and a film for the ages. Aditya Chopra really struck gold there, and he and his cronies like Johar are simply incapable of making something like that ever again

  158. It’s not really a big shock picking DDLJ over Swades. Tony has explained it well enough. It’s a massive triumph at the box office and influenced many films in the genre. It’s an iconic film and the flag bearer of SRK’s career. Not embarrassing to pick it. I’d certainly have picked a couple of other films over it but overall it’s no shock it’s winning here. Possibly a populist point of view but it kind of ticks most boxes. I don’t recall reviews but I’d assume it was fine enough, the box office is huge and it led the charge on the NRI front. It’s influenced many spin-offs and when SRK hangs up his boots it’ll be his most remembered film by a distance and it is his career defining moment.

To me it would be like choosing Maradona’s amazing season at Napoli (a slog of sorts & much more effort) to win a title over his goal in 86 World Cup against England. That latter moment is quite unforgettable, the former sequence quite remarkable too. But you’ll see THAT goal every single time the World Cup is around. It’s unforgettable and hard to ignore.

Also the DDLJ moment is incredibly larger than every other time SRK has gone down this oeurve. He’s never hit that peak again…such that consequent efforts mimick this film terribly.

Swades is a good film. I won’t bash it to justify DDLJ choice.

      • Josh is another SRK film I would have picked over many others but it wasn’t part of the proceedings. But this happens in sports also. Do you always get the World Cup draw that ‘ought’ to be there. One doesn’t have to look beyond the most recent WC (football). Italy didn’t even qualify. Nor Holland. Then there were all those crazy eliminations on one side. So even in sports you hardly ever get ideal choices at every stage. To repeat the point Jay has done a wonderful job here and it was interesting at all points.

By contrast, even PRE-Lagaan I think I ‘d have a better list for Aamir: QSQT, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Hum Hain Rahee Pyar Ke, Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin (admittedly a poor second to Chori Chori), Rangeela, Sarfarosh, Ghulam, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Mann, Raakh. An uneven list, and in totality not a list for the ages either, but it gives me a stronger top ten even before Lagaan, and certainly a stronger top 5 (bolded). Once we are in Lagaan-and-after territory, it would be embarrassing to draw up a comparative list — but yes, Jay we need to do more such “tournaments.”

    • This is a good summation. I’d just add this, for me the huge blockbuster that’s been iconic as well is not necessarily an automatic choice. In fact I thought when the poll started out that I probably wouldn’t vote for DDLJ against a number of films, certainly not Swades, but then changed my mind. But I wouldn’t have with Dil Se in the mix. Are there other SRK films that I could have picked over DDLJ? No. Swades is the closest it gets. It’s then of course about liking a film at a personal level in the first place. Beyond this however I think, and here I’m going to say this provocatively, Swades is an overrated film. This makes sense in a way only because it’s a SRK film and the rest of his oeuvre is mostly not even at DDLJ level (in the genre sense). for instance the same film for Aamir wouldn’t make a top 5, maybe not even a top 10. Now I’m not saying anything different from what I said on NG when the film first released. I like it, it’s certainly one of the better major commercial films over this entire period, but it’s not some sort of ‘ultimate’ film that many make it out to be. It’s ‘meaning’ is too easy (yes a lot of emotional, even heart-tugging moments but that’s a somewhat different discussion), it’s craft just not interesting enough (one just has to compare it with Lagaan even here), the storytelling similarly is a bit uninspiring. Nonetheless it works because of a certain sincerity. I like it despite all its faults (as I see them). Dil Se on the other hand is a vastly superior film on all of these levels. Now one could certainly criticize this film too for having a messy narrative at points or one could question it in other ways but it just attempts to say something much deeper than Swades and it also says in a language (visual, sound cues etc) that is much more sophisticated than that of Swades. Of course it doesn’t have the obvious emotional hooks of Swades (this kind of immediate identification might be a box office virtue but it’s definitely not a cinematic one in some absolute sense). Also it must be said that DDLJ was relatively cutting edge in the major commercial film sense at the time. Yes standards have greatly changed since then. But other than RGV at a smaller level with Satya or Rangeela no one in Hindi was really making more refined films. Again in the very commercial sense. So it’s not as if one is choosing Raja Hindustani over Swades! For that matter I wouldn’t dream of choosing even KKHH over Swades. Also DDLJ is in its own way a spontaneous film and not quite a product the way KKHH is. Incidentally I would have chosen Pardes over every other SRK love story other than DDLJ as well. Ghai is rather old school with his message here (bad NRIs/Americans and so on..!) but the central relationship is well-handled. So it’s really a number of things. But the DDLJ choice does not quite need defending. And again despite liking it I consider Swades overrated.

  161. I voted for films based on what I would like to watch again. Based on my current sensibilities, of course. I can’t suddenly become Doctor Strange and go back to my old viewing habits. So yeah, films need to be judged according to contemporary standards and one’s own (current) cinematic knowledge. It doesn’t mean one shouldn’t acknowledge a film’s eminent status or its historical impact but at the end of the day liking or disliking a film is a personal choice. Based on a number of factors, yes, but hopefully one matures over the years and chooses wisely in the end.

A film can be historically important in many ways and also be insufferable at a personal level. I don’t see any contradiction in this. For example, Mughal-E-Azam is a bonafide classic but I wouldn’t watch it again. The same goes for Paakeezah and some other Meena Kumari classics as well. Bhansali is greatly inspired by the aesthetics of Mughal-E-Azam and so it’s not an irrelevant film either. Thankfully (for me) he’s also a great fan of Guru Dutt’s cinema — something that is truly timeless. I could watch Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool & Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam again and again and marvel at not just the story but also the film-making!

Coming back to the topic at hand, I didn’t vote for the final because both films that remain at the end don’t work for me. At all. DDLJ, looking back, is one heck of a bore. Right from the uninspired title to its whole dynamics of love, the characters who I can’t identify with at any level, and finally, the plot inconsistencies. It’s a superficial film at every level — a film that I quite liked when it first released but what did I know back then?! At one point of time I used to watch films like Watan Ke Rakhwale and feel good about it. I also loved lollipops back then.

Swades is a movie made with good intentions but Gowarikar is a very uninteresting filmmaker. I still enjoy the film’s soundtrack (Yun Hi Chala Chal in particular) and coming from a non-SRK fan, I’ll admit that he looked great during this period, and particularly in this film (as opposed to how he looks today). But that’s about it. Having said that I might still watch it sometime just to see if my initial impressions still hold true. So, without voting, I’d still say Swades over DDLJ. But it’s hardly an endorsement.

I will end by saying that all the extraneous factors like IMDB ratings (which can be manipulated, or at best they just indicate an average of opinions — a democratic vote for art, which is dangerous), historical significance etc are meaningless for me at a personal level. I am interested in a critical discourse by serious film critics who could offer some insight that I might have missed or an alternate point of view, which being me and having lived my own life in a certain way with certain influences, makes me sit up and take notice. That is where a real, meaningful conversation starts. Indian cinema (and world cinema!) needs film critics like Pauline Kael and Truffaut. Kael used to rip apart movies made by Kubrick and I would still read those reviews because they were always full of insight. I might not have agreed with her but reading those reviews was a pleasure. That is, for me, the true purpose of cinema — to open one’s eyes to alternate viewpoints, your truth against mine. And this can only happen when a film deserves such a discourse to begin with.

Sorry, but I can’t help taking digs at the classic love story of the 90s!

      • Yes. My final vote would have gone to Paheli or Baazigar if they were in the running. As it is Swades is my majboori final choice. If it is remade with some slickness thrown in it may click better.

        • Baazigar – with all that violence & bloodshed? I’ve not seen Paheli.

Anyway recruit away – this is ending in 10 hours or so. I didn’t realize so much passion would come pouring out at this late stage!

        • Violence was part of the film there.
And it is a thriller with good songs. Like Ghazini. Unlike films like Black Friday where in every scene we are treated to raw violence.

        • But in Black Friday and in Ghajini the violence was part of the story the film was trying to tell — in Baazigar as well, but there the violence against the first female lead was excused and confined by the end, it was highly problematic…

        • As a story I may read it but graphic violence on screen is difficult for me to watch. I avoid lots of hollywood films due to this fear factor! That Shilpa Shetty murder scene was cold blooded and shocked the audience in Baazigar. No amount of back story can justify killing someone who was innocent and trustful.

As Salman would say…just chill chill chill chill! Choice was not life threatening!

13-11 it is. Swades needs 2 votes to win this and leave Satyam & Qalander red faced! The ONE time they vote for DDLJ they might lose!

  169. Just for fun, I’d like to know how many people will actually prefer Jab We Met over DDLJ?

Manmarziyan is a bridge too far, but surely, JWM might be one of the few films to usurp DDLJ’s crown?

    • Firstly Shahid has aped SRK in these types of films. And secondly Kareena is even more irritating than Kajol. Thirdly DDLJ music is way better than JWM. JWM is much more dance music than romantic music.

      • But what about the story? It’s not a simple rom-com. There are consequences to Geet’s (Kareena Kapoor) naivety. A girl who’s full of life, impulsive and madly in love, ends up being a broken person. Damaged goods as one might say.

In a way the story is about role-reversal. Shahid Kapoor’s character is suicidal in the beginning, finds solace in Geet’s exuberance and stages a recovery… while Geet finds out the (harsh) truth about her unbridled optimism. The sense of loss, when it hits, makes a telling statement.

The end is a cop-out, sure, but by that point, the film has already achieved its goal.

        • For me it is JWM and its music superior to popular DDLJ one. Kareena looked sweet and Shahid subdued and wise. I liked the indian feel and its tourist spots.

        • Probably but I dislike Kareena with passion…only 2nd to her sister! Her Diva act is off-putting. Fine in JWM it’s good but like munna I’ve not cared to revisit it. I probably prefer Tamasha as an Imtiaz Ali film.

DDLJ one-upmanship must stop. It’s won the World Cup! QSQT fans can vote for it later on! Salman fans will be in for a treat in a month’s time… he’ll get a different contest. One hopefully that will engage rather than Hello Brother Vs Marigold type matches…

        • So much bias against Kareena! She was very good in her debut film Refugee. She was great in Talaash. In JWM she made Geet memorable. In Bodyguard and Bajrangi she was adequate. She even floored BR in VDW. She was fun in 3 Idiots.

I respectfully disagree on the Imtiaz Ali comment. Perhaps box office wise his movies have gone downwards but films like Rockstar, Highway and the very very underrated Tamasha have proved he’s still capable of making very good films. Hell, I even thought JHMS was a watchable movie.
