      • I have never predicted big numbers for any Aamir film, even Dangal which was shown widely through industry, and garnered praise, before release. Wait and watch is my policy.

But all over the net I find humongous numbers being predicted for TOH. Hmmm…good to be confident — but I for one will be happy if they first get back their supposed budget of Rs 300 crores.

        • Nothing more! I personally don’t want anymore. Firmly believe less is more in some cases. Keep everyone guessing and land one big kick ass trailer. I think Ghajini’s trailer did this.

As share prices go… everyone would have bet big a day before 2.0 and TOH respectively for short term gain. 2.0 you’d have a tanked share price once it’s teaser came out with some recovery the next day (you’re sitting on a loss now praying for the trailer to reverse the trend). With TOH it will be flat right now. You won’t sell in case of something bigger arriving i.e. the trailer. You might sell or buy for a bit of profit.

        • Sanju went above 45 Cr on Sunday so even some basic stuff like TOH is a much bigger film with bigger cast, YRF, releasing on the biggest day of the year, most definitely higher ATP, a proportion of business from 3d likely, a film more likely to penetrate masses etc, 50Cr would be pretty average IMO. At least late 50’s knocking on the door of 60 Cr. Even PRDP cracked 40Cr in 2015, that was pre GST changes. So I expect TOH to blow records by a distance, such a distance that only a Salman or Aamir film will have a chance and probably a project that isn’t even on their radar currently (maybe at least 2 years before the record is threatened). Obviously a good trailer must follow for this to happen.

I am playing a character who cannot be trusted at all – [so it’s the] very opposite of Dangal … He’s a very slippery character. He has no scruples at all – for money he can sell his mother out. He’s like that,” Aamir earlier told South China Morning Post about the film.

A 60 CR opening day with all the hype and (presumably) very good WOM MIGHT take it to 300 CR extended first week. Damn!

    Like

    • As ludicrous as it sounds, there is an outside shot at this. Of course it would need to open @60Cr and have good WOM.

60+40+45+50+30+27.5+25+22.5 is 300Cr. But obviously TOH will need to at least have strong WOM across all demographics. And to challenge BB2 it will need something like a first week in this range. It’s lost a day by releasing on 8th rather than 7th so conceivably 2.0 will put a speedbreak on its run in 4th week/last day of third week. 4th week onwards I doubt it does anything more than 20Cr. So working backwards it will need some ridiculous numbers to catch BB2. 400Cr should be possible inside 2 weeks.

All this can only happen if it’s a strong product.

Here front loading will help as long as product matches hype. It’s an event movie so box office could go anywhere.

The trailer will obviously help with opening but the turnaround time in this world of social media is instant so even if the trailer is par but movie is strong such numbers can be possible. Think the market potential will be 70Cr+. Averaging 85% occupancy through the biggest day of the year with huge film is surely possible. Plenty of time for my opinion to change. Trailer, soundtrack, advance reports, reviews will all have an impact.

I’m doing my bit to build the hype 😀

PK was the closest he did to acting in recent times, and he did a very good job of it

    • I think any time you’re in the presence of great acting…the level of one’s own acting raises. I thought he was OK in PK…he was good in Dangal and he was great in Talaash but in my opinion his last memorable acting was in “The Rising”.

With respect to this kind of film, I’m not expecting anything memorable but I’m expecting a lot of fun in his acting. Aamir hasn’t really challenged himself as an actor in a decade, IMO. I wish he would do more to challenge himself in that department, he is a really good actor but it doesn’t come naturally to him.

Besides everything else that has already been discussed this film also triggers certain older Bachchan archives. • This is shaping up to be a movie for the ages. I fear the female casting is indulgent, if Katrina has a lengthy role I’ll be disappointed. Fatima is fine but whatever Katrina is there for I would have cast Kangana (if she played fair).

But this pre release buzz is immense and October will be more interesting IMO. All the major December releases will start their promotion so 5-6 films will be vying for limelight. The music might be crucial here. Rahman with 2.0 is bound to give something good, not sure about this Ajay-Atul duo. Not sure I’ve heard much of them at all.

          Like

        • Ajay-Atul are Marathi film composers who’ve done some stuff in Hindi too. In the past they’ve had a catchy track or two in a larger album (Agneepath, Bol Bachchan), usually a Hindi version of a hit Marathi track. But they’ve done full albums since then too. Currently they’re doing Zero in addition to TOH. They are a surprising choice for TOH for sure but in a way this isn’t bad. Because this is their biggest chance ever. They’ll work hard for this one. And there probably will be at least catchy chartbuster here. The thing is Aditya Chopra will have a huge budget for this sort of film but will otherwise not want to spend whatever is required to get Rahman. Otherwise he’d be great here. He’s been low profile in Hindi for a long time but he’s also not had the chance to do this sort of major thing. But he’s not someone who’s going to do it for peanuts and Aditya Chopra won’t spend too much more.

On Katrina she’s lucky she got this chance at this point in her career. I suspect Fatima will be the real deal here. Katrina will have her item song or whatever but I expect Fatima to be more impressive in every sense.

Ajay-Atul also gave the Saju-song in PK, the fantastic songs of Sairat/Dhadak and the Paani anthem. I like their work very much and they will give great songs for TOH, I’m sure.

Rahman can be brilliant, but he also does a lot of average work. However, I would like to know what he could have done for SS!

I like Katrina, never mind that is she is not a great actress. She has good screen presence, looks great and does her acting job adequately. Have liked her a lot in films like Ek Tha Tiger, Dhoom 3 and Tiger Zinda Hai ( where she seemed to outshine hero Salman; loved her in the latterly scenes where she shepherds a group of nurses out of the danger zone).

I too am an Aamir fan who is looking forward to the complete film, beyond Aamir. But I generally find Aamir’s films to be a total experience, not a one man show. Would like him to be a true lead, though.😊 Now that is a fan speaking.

        • Romantic Aamir- Katrina pairing is fine by me. I actually liked them together in Dhoom 3, especially the songs.

Katrina’s PR (and maybe Katrina herself) cribbed about some of her best scenes being snipped off Dhoom 3. Her fans on sites like twitter and that despicable Pinkvilla were moaning about her snipped scenes and castigating Aamir in the process.Hope she won’t make the same complaint again.

What these cinema ignoramus people don’t seem to care for is the film in totality. Extra scenes will be shot — and used at the discretion of director . An original film that is four hours long may need to be edited and pruned to around two and half hours or so. Why crib about basics like these things?

  27. Thugs of Hindostan FIRST look: Amitabh Bachchan as Khudabaksh will give you major Pirates of the Caribbean feels
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkSep 18, 2018 – 12:06 pm IST

Aamir Khan’s Thugs Of Hindostan happens to be one of the most awaited movies of this year and well, while it boasts a great star cast, it will have Aamir Khan’s classic Midas touch and we can’t wait to know more about the film. The makers know this and are slowly but surely building hype around the movie. Yesterday, they released a logo of the film and now, they are out with the first look of the senior most THUG, Amitabh Bachchan. The motion poster showcases Amitabh as a deadly, gritty pirate on a rundown ship and the poster introduces him as: Wading through storms & battles, the commander of Thugs has arrived. We love his deadly look, matted tresses and grungy costume. The poster looks pretty promising

The logo teaser and Amitabh’s look is quite encouraging. But I would rather wait for the trailer, before seriously thinking about a cume higher than the regular 300-350 cr range (Padmaavat, TZH, Sanju all did in that range recently). But given the final release date, 50 cr nett day one is given at this point.

      • Its also a kind of backlash to the beating that bollywood trade took last year when a dubbed telegu film became the highest grosser in the hindi belt by quite a big margin.

        • And that was followed by the beating that hollywood delivered with the phenomenal success of AIW this year. The trade had tried its best to retaliate by under-reporting the follow-up hits jurrasic world and mission impossible. But now it seems everyone is latching on to the ToH bandwagon to redeem bollywood’s lost BO clout and Aamir is being looked upon as the industry mascot or even their saviour. Unfortunately the other mascot is drowning in the failures of race 3 and tubelight.

Interestingly, both the promos mentioned that the film is now releasing on November 8, instead of November 7, which was previously announced by the producers. So, what caused the change in plans? Turns out it’s Aamir Khan. According to a trade source, “Aamir knows the business very well and it was he who suggested to the team to release the movie a day after Diwali. He’s well aware that the footfalls in the theaters drop considerably in the evenings on account of Lakshmi Puja. So, he strongly recommended deferring the release by a day to make sure the film gets the bumper opening it’s expected to take.”

  35. The stakes are very high for Aamir here. His next big release will probably be in 2022. He needs a BIGgie here to remain on top. Anything less than 300Cr would be a disaster with this big budget movie. Of course to recover its cost of Rs 300 Cr (as per wikipedia – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thugs_of_Hindostan), it needs to do 500Cr to breakeven. 600 Cr will give it a HIT status.

Most of the Fans here are talking of 500 Cr at best from Hindi market. I don’t think it will do.

South Indian Market will be slightly better but would not be enough to be a game changer.

In all probability the makers are looking at China market but then we know that Chinese distributors hardly pay to indian producers. They may give a bit more as ToH as Aamir ho is the only relevant Indian star in China. So that market has to be discounted in terms of major recovery.

So after Hindi market, it will be satellite rights and US/UK/Australia market that has to do very good business.

Overall this is the riskiest Aamir khan project. As Aamir’s fan, i am keeping my fingers crossed. It wont be easy at all.

The more I am seeing of this film, the less excited I am: instead of a great desi epic, this one seems like it has a bad hangover of Game of Thrones, Baahubali, etc. I will of course give Aamir the benefit of the doubt and watch it, but this seems to lack some soul. More broadly, why is our imagination so impoverished — the visual grammar, even down to the poses of someone like Zafira, all show that we just can’t get beyond templates like comic book adaptations, Hunger Games, Game of Thrones; why are we unable to depict feminine strength except through the prism of some model like Wonder Woman? By the time we are done, there is no meaningful difference between the Rani of Jhansi and the Rani of a kingdom that never existed, like Themyscira. And that’s just one example: the Bachchan get-up is also deeply reminiscent of the folks from the Iron Islands from Game of Thrones (how likely is it that sailors in tropical conditions would be dressed in this way?! We know from Arab and Marattha and other accounts how sea-men in the Arabian Sea were dressed, to take one example. The only reason is that our imagination is so colonized that our standard for what a warrior/seaman/strong woman etc. look like, all come from the last Hollywood movie or TV show we saw). Pathetic stuff. Bhansali himself went wrong with his depictions of masculinity in something like Bajirao Mastaani (and Mehra even more so in Mirziya’s flashback portions), but at least he did someting more interesting with Ahiliabai. Have to give even Gowariker some credit with Jodha Akbar, he hearkened to a more authentic tradition there.

Stated differently, Bollywood doesn’t want to make a period piece set in the 18th century; it wants to make something that can enable it to say “if “they” have _____, we can do this”, which is a very different (and cruder, smaller) impulse. I hope I am wrong and that this film is good, but even if it is, I think a VISUAL opportunity has been missed.

OR maybe the stills are from action scene or a party scene respectively. Doubt if they will dress up like this all the time, but one never knows.

Anyways, as i said before, this is going to be a mishmash of lagaan, dhoom 3, tashan with influences from poc, got, robinhood – what have you. This is real ‘masala’ of bollywood and hollywood and kollywood and xyzwood. From indian masala to global masala – at least masala fans shud not be complaining …

      • For me masala is always something precise, at least in the version I like a lot. it’s not about unthinkingly celebrating every version of masala. Otherwise I’d be loving Salman’s films too! It’s because I’m expecting a great deal from TOH that it would be disappointing if they settled ‘good enough’ but not extraordinary. Specially when this combo will not be repeated anytime soon in this kind of subject. Whether this will be ‘real’ masala as you put it remains to be seen. It certainly has all the elements in place. But Hollwyoodization is a tricky business. Baahubali had a lot of influences but the mix was very Indian. The older masala traditions too had all of these influences at every point. I won’t get into it here but this is of necessity inasmuch as masala always negotiates post-colonial realities. But in any case there’s a difference between having the soul of an authentic masala film under a Hollywood-like veneer and shooting a Hollywood-like epic (adventure, fantasy, whatever) with the veneer of masala. these are two very different things. The posters in this sense set a certain tone. Obviously I will judge finally after watching a trailer and obviously with Aamir around hopefully there’s proper masala here (he even introduced a bit of a masala script into D3!) but ‘anything goes’ isn’t masala even if people often (mis)understand it this way.

On a normal film he gives much more than his salary in terms of creative inputs, here he has a big profit sharing deal aside from a big budget to recover so his input should be even greater. It’s whether it’s positive or not, got to believe he can add a lot here.

Visually the film is not uniform and on Malta the costumes were very Indian. These posters should simply leave an impression and surely the most impressive look was chosen.

Fatima was introduced by Bachan as ‘the reason for TOH’ and as ‘the warrior thug’ by Aamir.

Katrina’s poster suggest she is a dancer.

I do feel Fatima is going to play a very prominent role in the film.

        • Kranti though wasn’t pretending to be history. It was quite clearly a historical romance. The film was set in a certain historical period, used that to some extent, but otherwise it was a swashbuckling adventure kind of deal. Hollywood too has attempted this many times in the classic period of its history (sadly not as much anymore, they take themselves too seriously! this is also why Game of thrones resonates as much.. once cinema offered such pleasures). It’s masala transported to the 1857 period (which among other things mediates its jingoism in certain ways.. or more precisely the jingoism of that film still follows a masala aspiration.. ‘if we kick out the British we’ll happily live in the Amar Akbar Anthony world’!). Or differently still it’s history as folklore. If something like Kranti were made today (obviously with all the necessary updates) it would do a Baahubali or much more. This is precisely why I keep such a high bar for ToH. Even a half-entertaining film might get to the all time gross. But the true opportunity here is to get a mega-hit (which of course means a film strong enough on trending) and that point anything’s possible.

In the song Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi, Hema Malini who is soaking wet, is shown wriggling on a ship’s deck, with copious amounts of rainfall falling and the camera focused you-know-where, while a love-sick Manoj Kumar sings the song tied to a post.

Yes, Manoj Kumar offered an education to many of us. LOL that Hema Malini song was nothing compared to the others (actually, by the standards of that film, Hema Malini was the most decently dressed — presumably the filmmakers didn’t want to risk the wrath of Dharmendra!!!)

TOH seems to be having the same ships, cannons, turbaned rebel-bandit (ie BigB as Dilip), Angrez fauji, warrior princesses etc etc. All the POC, GOT, BB2 look n feel might just be a foil for a Kranti Redux of 2018.

For eg for my parents Sivaji Ganesan was the ultimate actor .But today , he appears to be OTT in most of the movies. Does that make him a bad actor? Every movie needs to be judged and appreciated in the time period that it was made.

There was an interesting observation that Rangan made about Sridevi. That she was the last of the stars who excelled in the so called ‘commercial acting’ ; the same reason why Raveena was convincing in a 2 minute role in Bombay Velvet while Anushka was not.

I am not arguing for Kranti to be some kind of classic but it was fun to watch in those times.

    • Marcus Dude, even classic Hwood would not stand up to your exacting standards! Almost every yesteryear Hwood movie even as late as from the 90s cannot really stand up to contemporary viewing choices. Audience Sophistication keeps progressing, and so the movies from today wont stand up in a couple of decades either. Acting, Direction, VFX, Scripts, Sensibilities etc keep changing with times, and especially evolve for greater Political Correctness as well.

What you are referring to as bakwaas was Pure Gold back then. This was a visual spectacle for the Big Screen in 1980. In fact so huge was the cost, most Distributors shied away from buying it. Yet Manoj persevered and delivered a Golden Jubilee Hit, one of the biggest ever in Bwood History.

Notice the scenes with two ships firing canons at each other in the clip you have posted. Now, think POC circa 2003, and similar scenes with greater VFX. The intentions are all the same. Lets see if TOH manages to bridge the gap between Kranti and POC in such battle scenes.

  69. Critical reception of Secret Superstar. Wiki.

The film has received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Secret Superstar has an approval rating of 88% based on seven English-language reviews, with an average rating of 7.4 out of 10.[18] Mike McCahill of The Guardian gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 stars and praised the film by saying that “This is first-class entertainment, the best imaginable antidote to the toxicity presently leaking out of western movie circles.”[174] Meena Iyer of The Times of India gave the film a rating of 4 stars out of 5 and said that, “If your world revolves around your mother, you’re going to root for this film.”[175]

Rajeev Masand gave the film a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 describing it as “an inspiring journey towards empowerment, a case for pursuing one’s passion against all odds, a testament to the deep mother-daughter bond, and a convincing depiction of teenage years.” He praised the performances of the actors with a special mention for the lead actress Zaira Wasim saying “Standing tall amidst a pitch-perfect ensemble, is Zaira Wasim as Insiya, who comes off as something of an old soul trapped in a teenager’s body. Wise beyond her years, she is riveting on screen, in the manner in which she appears to sing using her entire being, or the little moments of crushing disappointment and excitement that are reflected on the canvas that is her expressive face.”[176]

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV said Secret Superstar “is a bit like an over-enthusiastic child gifted a new bicycle. It never takes the foot off the pedal. The overlong film could have done with more restraint. It frequently seems to get carried away by the urge not to miss any trick in the book.” However, he praised the performances of its actors, saying, “Zaira is an absolute treat—a bundle of miracles! As for the wonderful Meher Vij, one can only ask: where was she all these years? We hope to see more of her on the big screen.” He concluded that “Secret Superstar is a winner notwithstanding the bumps along the way.”[177]

Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times gave the film a rating of 3 stars out of 5. He highlighted the positive aspects of the film saying that, “Secret Superstar’s biggest asset is Aamir Khan. His comedy despite being slapstick in nature, is worth noticing. Zaira Wasim lives up to the expectations and the film has a message.” and the negative aspect of the film as well saying that, “Secret Superstar has everything you ask for, but it isn’t exceptional storytelling. If there is one thing that can be blamed for it, it’s the overt melodrama.”[178]

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express praised the acting performances and the first half of the movie saying that, “The biggest strength of Secret Superstar is the wonderful Wasim who was also in Dangal. Both Vij as the mother and Arjun as the father are terrific, especially the latter, who doesn’t put a foot wrong.” but she wasn’t impressed with the second half of the film and said that, “The second half slides. The confidence that the narrative shows in the beginning begins to waver as it includes contrivances and predictable curves.” She gave the film a rating of 2.5 stars out of 5.[179]

In China, the film also received critical acclaim.[26] Chinese newspaper People’s Daily, for example, praised the film for “touching the soul”.[139] In Hong Kong, Nicola Chan of South China Morning Post rated the film 4 out of 5 stars. She called it a “crowd-pleaser that explores the sacred mother-daughter bond” and praised the performances of Khan, Wasim and Vij.[180] Richard James Havis of South China Morning Post also rated it 4 out of 5 stars. He called it “a tough story about domestic abuse and female empowerment” and noted “India’s energetic and freewheeling style of cinema can offer a new way of telling a story,” such as the “idea of having Insia – who does not usually wear a burka – don the garment to disguise herself when she performs on YouTube is very clever, in the sense it’s a reasonable way for her to solve her problem of anonymity.”[181]

It is so easy to write off somebody who is trying to do things differently. Abhi picture baaki hai….and I have my fingers crossed that this film will be more than a ‘pirates’clone. The goofy looking Firangi is sitting on what looks like a mule. So that adds the quirkiness such a character needs.

      • I get the sarcasm, but you are fooling yourself if you are thinking that it’s on the lines of POC.Thugs are different from pirates. There may be many different looks of Aamir in the movie, because that is what thugs are known for. Just because some character is looking a bit similar doesn’t mean that the film will be a copy of POC . When you are making a period movie of 17th – 18th century , the costume will be alligned to that time period and hence the similarity with POC.

Though there are 2 big ships involve I don’t think the movie has been entirely shot on ships. A big chunk of the movie will be on land.

        • Agree and seriously this period of history everyone would have looked like Big B from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Costumes were highly used. Look at all the dresses and clothes British monarchs wore. They were going to weddings when they were going to sleep!

This is perfectly fine look – it lends itself nicely to how can a guy like this fit into the Khudabaksh, Zafira world. Obviously with Katrina he’s going to have a playful relationship but the other 2 will have to tame him.

I don’t see why a Johnny Depp type character is offensive. It’s a very massy character. It can be witty, drunken swaggering & mimicking type character.

If Chulbul Pandey can work, this certainly can. Barring his cameo in Secret Superstar, the last time Aamir had a fun character was probably DJ in Rang De Basanti. He was also a character that went from comedy to tragedy pretty quickly. Let him have some fun on screen once in a while.

The reason being, it was a half-baked film. Vijay Krishna Acharya did not know where to go with the premise — that is, he didn’t know whether he was making a masala film or in fact, spoofing it. So yeah, a pretty disjointed effort in the end.

Still, the film has a very funny and interesting opening sequence, some very nice songs and the only Akshay Kumar performance I’ve liked to a great extent.

Anil Kapoor, however, had a particularly bad outing.

  81. Share price of TOH worth 100 rupees increased to 200 on logo release. Remained the same with Bachchan’s look. It decreased to 150 with Fatima’s look as people were expecting aamir’s look. With Katrina’s look, it went down to 80. With aamir’s look it went down to 50 initially and then got back to 120 limping. What will happen after trailer release??? Will it sore to 300 or settle at between 250 and 170?

After yesterday’s meltdown in Indian stockmarket, I am looking at TOH from that perspective.

    • Agnostic to Katrina look. It’s the same look & expression as usual. In this ‘nothing’ role she is the best bet. Fatima is replaceable, maybe Deepika. The USP of the film remains Big B/Aamir in a big canvas backdrop.

Aamir in a ‘serious only’ role would have been eaten alive onscreen by Bachchan. This quirky aspect gives him some different shades to play with and gives a completely different, fun quotient to the movie. I’m sure it won’t be pathbreaking as YRF are not that kind of production house but they will deliver something substantial here on the entertainment front.

Everything points to a big winner.

  84. Did You Know? Jack Sparrow’s Character In Pirates Of The Caribbean Was Inspired By Lord Krishna
Captain Jack Sparrow is a fictional character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
    By Koimoi.com Team -September 24, 2018

Pirates of the Caribbean series starring Johnny Depp in the lead role was started in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which received positive reviews from the critics.

Post the success of its first installment, the makers announced the trilogy of the series with Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End and On Stranger Tides.

The series gave the audience a very famous character of Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp which has created an immense impact on the audience.

Interestingly, the writer of Jack Sparrow’s character have gone ahead to reveal that Jack Sparrow has been inspired by the shades of Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna who is known to be an inspiration for many because of his sharpness and utmost strength, has also inspired the legendary screenwriters of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Ted Elliott one of the screenwriters for Jack Sparrow’s character shares, “Jack Sparrow’s character in Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most integral part of the film. The characterization of Sparrow is based on Lord Krishna who is a major deity in Hinduism. While writing the character sketch of Jack Sparrow, we referred to the description of Lord Krishna, various shades of the Almighty, which helped us a lot in making the whole character of Jack Sparrow into existence”.

In the films, Sparrow is one of the nine pirate lords in the Brethren Court, the Pirate Lords of the Seven Seas. He can be treacherous and survives mostly by using wit and negotiation rather than by force. Similarly, Lord Krishna is listed as the 57th name in the Vishnu Sahasranama who defeated with his wit and bravery.

  89. This film does seem to be ‘water-centric’. At least based on the images we’ve seen so far. It might also be a way for Yashraj to avoid overt comparisons with Baahubali or whatever. I didn’t think this was true earlier but this film could have a lot of the Pirates deal to it. Perhaps there will be more of a balance (with land!) in the film. Again the trailer should make this clear one way or the other. Certainly there will be a lot of action here on a ship. They’d also erected that huge set in Malta.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Regarding water…. They also shot a short schedule in Thailand near water.
But on Malta “only” 45 shooting days were scheduled and they were finished in time or even earlier. There was a lot of action, but also longer speech scenes. It was partly shot with 2 units in the morning. I estimate roughly about 80-90 minutes Malta could be maximum in the movie (only outdoor shots counted).

Think rather, the two ships are well suited for the promotion. Impressive and really something special!

      • I don’t have a problem with ‘water’ at all. I do think however that it’s easier to get wrong. Precisely because it is gimmicky. it’s easy to focus on what seems ‘impressive’ about these sequences and forget the script. Even Hollywood rarely gets it right, including as a historic matter. But again I don’t otherwise have an issue. One of my favorite films, Kranti, also had a fair bit of stuff involving ships (including a Ben-Hur -like moment with the slaves rowing!) but most of its action was still on land and the sea portions were very integrally connected with the narrative. I suppose a lot of this is for me yet another way of saying ‘I hope they don’t mess this one up’. Because it really is a chance for the ages. To get to your point however it is true that if these sequences are presented the right way they will look impressive on screen and also fresh.

        • No, no water problem, I know. I just wanted to say that it probably seems more than it is at the end.

The cinematography in Dancing with Wolves or Open Range were striking. The visuals of those vast spaces of land were really stunning. They were poetry of the landscape.

In Waterworld as well, he filmed those vast oceans of spaces until the horizon unites with the blue sky. It was great to watch on the big screen.

I have watched POC and Waterworld on the big screen but I can vouch that while POC was more advanced in terms of CGIs (it came out a decade later), Waterworld was more visually stunning on the big screen.

The character of Jack Sparrow was itself inspired by Lord Krishna, this fact has been endorsed by the creator of Jack Sparrow character. Aamir Khan’s character would certainly have a lot of dimensions, the first poster is just a tease. It would certainly be one of the most entertaining characters he has ever played. It had brilliant music, the legendary Dilip Kumar, but you would also agree that it had the most cliched characters and the Britishers were presented as a laughing stock in the movie. Aamir Khan always gives a brilliant graph to foreign actors right from Lagaan to Mangal Pandey to RDB. Just because a movie has water and ships, means it cannot be compared to the pirates of Carribean. Its just a narrow thinking. Just because a boy meets a girl love story cannot be a Romeo and Juliet everytime. More so, to comment even before viewing the movie is childish. I am absolutely sure about Aamir’s commitment and his ability to bring in something new. As usual, he will certainly spring a surprise! All time blockbuster is already loading.

Of course, if will be a different matter IF this turns out like Sholay. That film too was heavily inspired from spaghetti westerns and remixed in a masala format. But it was a perfect mix (for a change) and have withstood the test of time. Cant say that for most of masala films (without or without Bachchan) starting from late seventies.

  95. And who says getting inspired by Hollywood films or Kranti is necessarily a bad thing? Here is ‘wiki’ on Sholay:

“The film was loosely styled after Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film Seven Samurai, and is a defining example of the Dacoit Western film, combining the conventions of Indian dacoit films, especially Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957) and Dilip Kumar’s Gunga Jumna (1961), with that of Westerns, especially Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns such as Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) as well as The Magnificent Seven (1960). It also some plot elements borrowed from the Indian films Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) and Khote Sikkay (1973). A scene depicting an attempted train robbery was inspired by a similar scene in Gunga Jumna, and has also been compared to a similar scene in North West Frontier (1959). A scene showing the massacre of Thakur’s family has been compared with the massacre of the McBain family in Once Upon a Time in the West. Sholay may have also been influenced by Sam Peckinpah’s Westerns, such as The Wild Bunch (1969) and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), and George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).

The character Gabbar Singh was modelled on a real-life dacoit of the same name who had menaced the villages around Gwalior in the 1950s. Any policeman captured by the real Gabbar Singh had his ears and nose cut off, and was released as a warning to other policemen. The character was also inspired by Gunga Jumna, where Dilip Kumar’s character Gunga is a dacoit speaking with a similar dialect, a mix of Khariboli and Awadhi. The character was also influenced by the villain “El Indio” (played by Gian Maria Volontè) of Sergio Leone’s For a Few Dollars More (1965).”

“Sholay (1975), directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by Salim-Javed, also falls under the masala genre. It is sometimes called a “Curry Western”, a play on the term Spaghetti Western. A more accurate genre label is the “Dacoit Western”, as it combined the conventions of Indian dacoit films such as Mother India (1957) and Gunga Jumna (1961) with that of Spaghetti Westerns. Sholay spawned a subgenre of “Dacoit Western” films in the 1970s.”

  96. Will ToH be seriously entertaining?

There are two kinds of good cinema – Entertain seriously and entertain casually.

Dhoom3, Don, Hera Pheri etc was to “entertain casually” – Relax and enjoy. Most of Salman / Akshay movies barring Sultaan / Padman falls in this genre. I love this genre but quite a few here do not. I am ok with that.

But to entertain seriously like Sarfarosh, Ghajini, Sultan, Dangal or RDB, one needs to have an entertaining as well as serious tone. I think Amitabh is providing that serious tone here. Had he been in casual getup, it would have fallen into entertain “casually” zone.
However from the posters, Aamir in entertaining mode and Amitabh in serious mode, ToH appears more than what we have seen so far from posters.

The first time I heard of Thugs of Hindostan (TOH) was when the leaked image of Aamir Khan circulated the Internet. The photo elicited the imageries of Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I am really excited to see something adventurous of that sort from our side.

TOH is based on a 180-year-old novel “Confessions of a Thug” by Philip Meadows and was a bestseller, so they say.

Reading a few reviews on Goodreads Confessions of a Thug presents to us that the story is a “chilling, horrifying” tale. Now, that’s a good thing to experience in a theatre but since I haven’t read the book yet, I can’t say whether that “chilling, horrifying” tales involve ghoulish scenes or blood-curdling stabbings and killings; if it does I fear there’s a high possibility that makers would subdue the scenes to fit our audience or completely omit them. Positive aspect is that the story is said to be fascinating crime thriller. But of course these are just assumptions until I read the book.

Now, for the film to be a critical success it has the starpowers of Aamir Khan and Big B and their dedication and acting skills are never doubted. So critics never point a finger at them. Fatima Sana Shaikh has proved herself in Dangal.

The two spots that obstructs my visualising the movie to be a critical success are:

    – Katrina Kaif, and
    – The Director Vijay Krishna Acharya.

Not a fan of her acting and his previous works are uh-uh.

    Still hopeful

  97. Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Thugs of Hindostan to have the biggest Tamil and Telugu release ever for a Bollywood film

Yash Raj Films mega action adventure, Thugs of Hindostan, will record another feat when it releases worldwide on November 8. The most awaited visual spectacle is being dubbed in Tamil and Telugu and it will also break the record of being the biggest ever release in these languages by a Bollywood film.

This larger than life, visually immersive extravaganza that boasts of jaw-dropping action sequences, achieved a casting coup by bringing together two of the icons of Hindi cinema Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan for the first time on big screen. So, right from the word go, YRF wanted to make this the biggest Bollywood film to come out of the industry. Aamir and Bachchan would be revealing this news about language dubs in an extremely innovative manner.

The two legends have shot a video featuring them as they announce the film’s release in Tamil and Telugu. The biggest attraction of the video is they will be seen speaking in these two languages to announce the news. The film, however, is not being dubbed by them. Renowned dubbing artists from the Tamil and Telugu industry have been roped in for the same.

  98. I think Aamir will have probably ensured there is decent content in there. If they are merely trying to make an Indian version of POC, then I guess we may be in for a major disappointment. I really can’t see those visuals, CGI’s or stunts from the POC series being matched. We can’t beat Hollywood there.

Watch D3, in the climax when the twins fall, it is like Balaji tv serials-like stuff. The twins are falling slow motion with a fake back-ground behind.

This was the level of YRF last time around in terms of VFX. I think Aamir is wise enough not to over-rely in these. He will have most probably ensured that there is enough plot and character development in the story.

It does seem Aamir is a major stake-holder in TOH (based on what Marcus has reported here), so he may have a bigger say than compared to the production of Fanaa and D3.

Aamir’s presence is what makes me expect this film to be good cinema. Otherwise, I wouldn’t expect much from YRF/Acharya.

The pressure on the director here is monumental. It will be sink or swim here on for VKA. He’s basically been backed by YRF for their 2 biggest films ever. He must deliver!

All this pumping after a screen test – should imply the film has turned out ok or better otherwise there is a lot of egg throwing coming the way of YRF and Aamir.

From the 27th of September, life for BOI will be sucked out after a torturous couple of decades where it’s poorly placed bets on stars to upsurge both Bachchan’s history and Aamir’s present will come to an embarrassing end. We gratefully request you to support our trailer of Thugs of Hindostan and offer your condolences in this very difficult time for BOI’s followers and those who have prayed unsuccessfully for the failure of these 2 legends.

A period of 6 weeks is requested for the grieving before the Ashes are scattered on November 8th when our legends will arrive on screens near you.

      Please send flowers and your cards to any of the following 3 addresses;

Not to say that with Hrithik on board the script (improvement happens?), or marketing comes good like this or hype in general but the genre and exposure this film is arriving with could have catapulted him back into the game. The role probably would be different with him but not difficult to imagine him here in this get up. He’s missed out unless he’s smarter than I give him credit for!

She said: “Akshay Kumar has made few films with Nana Patekar in last eight years and Rajinikanth also recently worked with him (in Kaala)… If such big stars will keep working with these culprits then there’s no hope for any movement to happen.”

“Everyone has gossiped about this but they’ve never spoken. People with this kind of character speak like this against the kind of character that I have because they say she does glamourous roles so must be glamorous and all. Behind the back, they are so dirty. When you are in the industry you hear so many stories about these actors. But these things never take surface because they are PR packaged very well. They will give some money to some poor farmers. How much they do and how much they don’t know, no one knows. But all this is just for show,” she added.

Tanushree Dutta was reportedly signed for a special song sequence in Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss, which she eventually dropped, citing Nana Patekar’s misbehavior as reason.

Tanushree Dutta debuted in 2005 film Aashiq Banaya Aapne, co-starring Emraan Hashmi and Sonu Sood. She starred in films like Dhol, Good Boy, Bad Boy and Apartment, which was her last onscreen appearance.

Katrina is repeating her role in Dhoom 3, which honestly isn’t a negative. Looks like it will have grand songs and emotions and sets. BUT but bu…special effects were as cartoonish as 2.0…the ships looked animated, and some action scenes looked like a video game…ah Bollywood VFX

      • Vfx is at BB2 level. Will not matter at BO since there is enough of everything else going for it.

        Like

      • Agree that VfX doesn’t really matter, as they did not hype it as a vfx extravaganza like 2.0, but still I think it is below par VFX. Look at that tower explosion scene and night time ship scenes. Agree that the VFX are at BB2’s level- BB2’s entire climax action scenes looked totally animated as well.

        Like

        • Agreed. To a seasoned eye, few shots are very crude with its vfx. ‘Cartoonish’ as Satyam would say.

          Like

        • Right. But a lot of it had appealing action shots. Overall, since the emotional arc should be good, I don’t think anyone will notice any bad vfx shots (at least the first time).

The character with an emotional arc that Aamir has done in recent times that this one seems to match is Rancho from 3I. Goofy, lovable, but then can be very emotional and serious as well. I just know the audience is going to have that emotional connect that they had with Rancho. Just from the trailer I can tell that this is a more likable character than the Dhoom one. Actually everything about this makes it clear this will be WAY better than D3.

Also surprised and in awe of the amount of action that Big B is doing in this film. Sure, both him and Aamir are using stunt doubles, but still – at the age of 75 to be involved in this type of action- astounding. It really is no surprise why people call Abhishek lazy – both physically and professionally – and why Abhishek really never had a chance. Big B just gets bigger and better with each film!

He has conveyed the message subtly that VFX needs to be of superior quality,” a source said.

  138. Thugs of Hindostan (TOH), a mega action-thriller by Yash Raj Films, has impressed audiences visually with its extravagant trailer. This visual spectacle about an epic war and adventure on the high seas is releasing this Diwali. And, of course, one of the most exciting aspects of the film is the fact that it brings together two of Hindi cinema’s biggest and most-talented actors — Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. And what we’re showing you is an image of the two dancing together.

Prabhudheva, known as the man with the maximum dancing prowess and also as one of the best choreographers in showbiz, has directed this number titled Vashmalle (which means dance your heart out and make merry). In his trademark style, Prabhu has infused the dance with high energy and some unique moves. Vashmalle is expected to bring the house down because Big B and Aamir are not only dancing together for the first time, but they have also packed the number with amazing energy.

TOH’s director, Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Viktor, says, “It is amazing that we could write a suitable moment in the film that sees these two icons of Indian cinema shake a leg with each other. The song will stand out because of their infectious energy and camaraderie. I have to reveal, the sequence will show them getting drunk during the celebrations and then breaking out in dance. It is a priceless moment.” Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani have sung this highly-anticipated number, which has been composed by Ajay-Atul and Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned its lyrics. TOH, which also stars Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh, releases on November 8.

  142. What Are The Expectations For Thugs Of Hindustan?
    Thursday 18 October 2018 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

    Q. What are the expectations for Thugs Of Hindustan as it does seem to be negative in the media and on social media?

    A. Mitra

    A. Does it really matter. It reflects the minority of the film going audience. Films like Tumbbad and Andhadhun are masterpieces for these people but how many people going to the theatres 5 lakhs and 50 lakhs respectively and on top both will be forgotten after the theatrical run by viewers. Yes talkers will talk but talk does not give any returns. There may be that limited section of the audience which goes for the above films which may not have liked Thugs Of Hindustan trailer but you have Aamir Khan to cover a chunk of this audience as he has biggest pull with metro premium multiplex audience. There was similar talk with Tiger Zinda Hai last year but there was no stopping the film. All commercial masala films like this rest on emotions to go on after the initial, if the reasons as to what is happening on screen is correct for the audience which leads to emotions working then it will beat Dangal and become the highest grossing film for our industry. If the emotions dont work with the audience then such a spectacle will still get 300 crore or close. Bahubali is a phenomenal film and honestly speaking its unlikely a Hindi filmmaker can have the conviction to go into mass commercial formula to that level due to that high end multiplex audience which we have in the Hindi market so as a film its tough to compare with Bahubali. Those Bahubali records will not be beaten by a better film as its going takes ages for that but it will be beaten as the market grows and ticket rates get higher and that will take some time. Of course if Thugs Of Hindustan is truly a phenomenal piece of cinema then anything can happen but that can only be judged after release. The film is a big screen spectacle so it will help if its kept to the big screen and footage as promos and songs is kept to a limit and then the actors dont run around doing the usual interview rubbish which actual bores the audience to death as its so repetitive. The media may not like as it costs them access to the stars and less coverage on digital space but thats not the problem of the makers.

  150. Thugs Of Hindostan Opening Day: Aamir Khan is coming to defeat Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn!
    By
    Himesh MankadOct 23, 2018 – 8:23 am IST
The countdown for the big Diwali 2018, Thugs of Hindostan starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh has begun. With less than 20 days left for the film release, the trade has started the prediction game, wherein the expectations as far as opening is concerned lies in the range of Rs 42 to 55 crore. Whenever a Khan film has released solo during the Diwali weekend, the post-Diwali day, which is considered to be the biggest holiday of the year, has recorded the biggest single day collection of all time. And Thugs of Hindostan is expected to be no different.

#Thugs Of HindostanThugs Of Hindostan Opening Day: Aamir Khan is coming to defeat Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn!
The film produced and distributed by YRF will be looking to release on approximately 4700 to 4800 screens in India, thereby being the biggest release of all time. The current record holder for the widest Bollywood release is Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai that released on nearly 4600 screens across India. The last two Khan releases on Diwali i.e. Happy New Year (3850 Screens) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (4200) clocked 70 to 75% occupancy on their opening day and proved to be record openers collecting around the Rs 40 crore mark. If Thugs of Hindostan opens at the same level i.e. 70 to 75% occupancy on 4800 screens, the opening day collections would be around Rs 45 crore, and this is without considering the year by year inflation and the GST benefit that Thugs of Hindostan will get. If we add the inflation (increase in ticket rates) as well as the GST benefit to the above figure, then the opening day collection of Thugs of Hindostan should be around Rs 51 to 53 crore as the average tax % fell from 35% to 28%.

Thugs Of HindostanThugs of HindostanThugs Of HindostanThugs Of HindostanAmitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh grace the trailer launch of the film ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’Thugs of HindostanTrailer launch of the film ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’Thugs of Hindostan
    Next
At 100% occupancy on 4800 screens, the opening day collections of Thugs of Hindostan will be around Rs 72 to 74 crore, however this would be an impractical expectation given the fact that Thugs of Hindostan is the widest release of all time and opening day occupancy in excess of 65% would be a great result for the film. Touching Rs 50 crore mark will also depend on the cinema strike in Madhya Pradesh, as if the strike continues till the release of Thugs of Hindostan, the film will lose out on approximately 7% of its business, which means that the opening would be around Rs 46 to 47 crore. With or without Madhya Pradesh, it is almost certain that Thugs of Hindostan will emerge the biggest opener of all time for Bollywood on 8th November 2018 and defeat the opening day collections of films like SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion, Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year. The movie will also surpass the day 3 i.e. Sunday collections of Sanju (Rs 46.71 crore) and hold the record for the biggest single day collections of all time.

Last year saw the release of Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal Again on the Post-Diwali day and the film clocked occupancy of 70% on 3300 screens and raked in a little over Rs 30 crore in India. The release size of Golmaal Again was fractured due to a clash with Secret Superstar, however with a solo release; it did stand a chance to rake in Rs 40 crore on its opening day. None the less, Thugs of Hindostan will be looking to match up to the occupancy percentage of Happy New Year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Golmaal Again on the post Diwali day and rake in some unheard figures on its opening day. We would go ahead with an optimistic prediction of Rs 51 crore if the film releases in Madhya Pradesh and Rs 46.50 crore if it doesn’t find a release in Madhya Pradesh. Although the response to the theatrical trailer as well as first song is quite mixed, it doesn’t really impact the opening day prospects of the film as it is the biggest film of the year starring one of India’s biggest Superstar, Aamir Khan and releasing on the biggest day of the year i.e. Post Diwali. The pre-release hype and excitement will help the film take an earth-shattering start and it will only be from the 3rd or 4th day that the word of mouth will come into picture. The film has all the commercial trappings which include an item number by Katrina Kaif, to get the audience at the B and C centres on board, whereas Aamir Khan is undoubtedly the biggest crowd puller in the metros and the culmination of these two factors should ensure a huge opening all across i.e. EAST – WEST – NORTH – SOUTH.

    Widest Releases of Bollywood:

    Tiger Zinda Hai: 4600 screens

    Dangal: 4250 screens

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo: 4200 screens

    Sanju: 4200 screens

    Baahubali 2: 3950 screens

    • They are pushing for as wide a release in telegu and tamil versions as possible. So it may release in as many as 5000+ screens. With enhanced festive ticket prices the per-day capacity will be around 75 cr.

Around 70% average occupancy will mean 50+ day one nett figure. It can perhaps get as high as 55-60 cr. 60+ cr day one will be a Ghajini like incredible opening. Fingers crossed.

    • I will predict at least 60 Cr at this stage…Sanju highest day ever @ 47 Cr. Just assuming that was the third day and here it will be first day and the biggest day of year. I’d take that 47 Cr add 20% just for a start and than another 10% to account for screens & ticket prices. 60 Cr will be my average prediction, potentially it could go much more bigger once one accounts for better single screens performance Vs Sanju.

50 Cr would kind of in a weird way suggest underperformance (despite it being a potential record)…

Given the fact that movies in China release much later than the Indian release, Aamir Khan fans in China are all excited to come and watch the film right upon its first release.

Fans in China are fond of Aamir Khan movies so much so that this time they have decided to fly down to India and witness it.

Of course Bliss always mysteriously selects certain kinds of pictures, tweets etc! Only for our general information! Incidentally the only thing ‘communist’ left in China is their authoritarianism (if that! you don’t need to be on the left to be authoritarian as so many other examples around the globe reveal). Otherwise it’s state run capitalism of the most ruthless kind.

  153. Cant expect much from filmstars except some good acting and good entertainment. If we expect more we will be disappointed. I expected aamir to leave the country and settle in Canada, become Canadian citizen and give company to his Mela co star and her husband. But he decided to stay in India, make Dangal and other films, do some social work and live under social media scanner. That takes a lot of strength and determination. It is not easy to face trolls somewhere always making vituperative comments on him. And his success maddens them more and they become more lynchy. We fans feel the heat and react. Cant help.

  154. @ Satyam — Vivek Agnihotri was the only name mentioned in the Me Too context. Akshay and Aamir may have had consensual affairs, but I doubt if any workplace sexual harassment took place, so till now, not guilty. In any case the whole history of the film, television, advertising and part of the media world is filled with affairs that were either consensual or forced. Are we going to sit in judgement on them all ?

    • One such band was a bunch of thugs, led by Khudabaksh (played in the film by Amitabh Bachchan). His trusted aide is the young markswoman, Zafira (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh).

With their massive sail ships and traditional weaponry (knives, swords, some cannon fire, horses) they take on the might of the British. A tough task but for the presence of Firangi, who has been introduced to us as a donkey-riding madcap. Further, in the trailer, we saw him as a wheeler-dealer, driving a hard bargain from any side, depending on his self interest. Then, there is Suraiyya, perhaps a nautch-girl, who charms the British.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, the song has been sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani and the music is by Ajay-Atul. It has been choreographed by Prabhudheva.

        • Firangi will die is my guess. Can’t see a con artist surviving Bachchan’s rage. Makes little moral sense. His deceitfulness will cheat him out of his life. And the Thugs will live forever. The Lagaan ending dialogue could be provided for Firangi here. Something like his ‘good’ deeds have been forgotten or wiped out of history LOL 😀

He also gives his take on spontaneous acting vs his own studied style. Talks about Charlie Chaplin rehearsing 300 times for his spontaneous look on screen. Also speaks about Buster Keaton. 156. A very good attempt to guess the plot. But looks like one is not reading between the lines.

    Here is my story:

Amitabh is on a mission with Sana on his sides making them a formidable Thugs.
British are fedup with them but do not know how to tackle this hit and run machine that Amitabh owns.
They resort to their divide and rule policy.
They find Aamir Khan as a loser who can do anything to win trust of British rulers. They send him to win Amitabh’s trust because he knows the serets of British.
Amitabh who is an astute kingpin initially resists Aamir’s inclusion. But later accepts him after a successful coup assisted by Aamir.
Aamir is then given a secret mission by British. he accepts without knowing that british actuall wants to capture Amitabh and break the neck of the Thugs.
Amitabh gets arrested and killed. Amitabh Dies on one of the epic scene that will win him awards.
    Aamir vows revenge.

    INTERVAL

Aamir wins the trust back of the Thugs.
    Become Sardaar.
    Triggers a parallel stratgy.
    Joins army.

    Ends.

After the final credit, it is shown that Aamir was actually Mangal Pandey.

    • Yash Raj Films mega action adventure Thugs of Hindostan has wowed audiences worldwide with its larger than life, extravagant trailer and its lavish catchy songs, making it the biggest ever Hindi film release. This visual spectacle about an epic war and adventure on the high seas, is releasing this Diwali. YRF is now releasing the teaser of its third song that is surely going to light up the internet. Titled ‘Manzoor E Khuda’, this patriotic dance number salutes the spirit of freedom and has Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh dancing on it.

Director Viktor (Vijay Krishna Acharya) says, “Manzoor E Khuda comes at a very crucial turning point in the film and it had to be a moving, powerful song. I think its lyrics, composition and vocals have created an overwhelming effect, making this salute to being free an incredibly special song. We love the song and we are certain that the audiences will love the spirit of freedom in it.”
