      • I guess he attended KBC shoot and came straight to the MAMI opening fest venue. Biwi Kiran and Anupama Chopra busy organising this fest every year. Need to be present, support, provide some glitz. But that jacket— my eyes are hurting. ☺️Reminds me of a PG Wodehouse character called Galahad, a bounder in loud checked jackets, busy conning people.

Aamir has been dressing quite spiffy, lately.Wonder who is his personal stylist. Obviously promoting this chap. Left to himself , he seems happy to be seen in torn tees and knee length casual pants, plus a pair of Hawais or open toed slippers. But in China recently, he was quite a model gentleman, changing jackets through three days. A blue check jacket that shouted a bit, then some sober, smart jackets. One fan kept feeding pics on fb.

At this MAMI fest opening, Karan Johar was seen in flowered pants. Last week, flowered jacket.😄

Sorry to go on and on.

  8. After the chinese success of Hichki, I watched the film once again with open mind. Really good movie and it gives competition to TZP.
I liked Rani as a teacher in this film. Even her hichkis did not bother me after a while. The kids did a very good job. Only the climax was not to my satisfaction. I wished the student and that peon got exposed and punished. I expect more from Rani and she still looks adorable. Rani gave a believable performance and it takes effort to do so. I will take Rani as a teacher than anyone else. The film reminded me of my school days and my teachers. Back to school.

Same with Sanju. After Satyam gave his input, I watched it once again fully. It is a highly entertaining movie and hats off to Hirani, Ranbir, Paresh Rawal and others. But it failed grandly as a biopic.

    • to be honest I didn’t like it as much as you thought I did! I felt it could be seen once. Just thought the second half was a lot better. Still wouldn’t want to make the trip to the theater for this one (though I rarely do this for any Hindi movie these days).

      • That toilet scene was repulsive and they could have deleted it. That prevents me to watch it once more. I did not feel anything for the hero but felt for his father. Paresh Rawal underplayed that role very effectively and brought tears to my eyes. The hero came across as a spoilt brat and his tears looked less convincing. Finding scapegoats for his acts of omission and commission looked ridiculous. But he was somewhat funny in most of the scenes even if it was somewhat repulsive.

        • I’ve finally watched Sanju (NetFlix). The movie was 2 hours and 37 minutes. Is this correct or the theatre version is longer. Some of the scenes felt ended abruptly.

The Good: The movie was good as is (to Satyam point, not as a biopic). There were a lot of praises for Vicky Kaushal but he was no where near Ranbirs performance. I wasn’t looking to nitpick if he looked like sanjay dutt or acted like sanjay dutt. I watched just as any film and not a biopic of sanjay dutt.

The Bad: I love watching Hirani films but it’s like he has not progressed at all. Everything is turned into a comedy. Sonam Kapoor father is dead in hospital and he makes a comedy scenes out of it.

But again, I’m a firm believer in as long as we have many different filmmaker making different films to their strength, then we will have good watch every year. Meaning Hirani makes his type, Bhansali makes his type, etc…

It’s like Bademiyaan in Mumbai makes awesome kabab, let’s not ask him to master pav bhaji. If I want pav bhaji, I’ll go to place that makes awesome pav bhaji.

Sanjana, agree with you on the toilet screen, was not needed.

  13. Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s magnum opus, Thugs of Hindostan was recently cleared by the censor board with a U/A – Universal Adult certificate. The CBFC cleared the film with no visual cuts and the major reason for getting a U/A certificate are the action sequences in the film which results in blood shed. Keeping up to the reputation, this is yet another YRF film which has been cleared without a single cut and declared as apt for family viewing.

The run-time of the film is approximately 160 Minutes (2 Hour 40 minute) including the start as well as the end credit. Unlike other films which are usually granted censor certificate around a week before their release, Thugs of Hindostan has been cleared much in advance and this is primarily because the print of the film has been locked long back after multiple test screenings. This is a norm followed for almost all films starring Aamir Khan in lead as the superstar always ensures finalising the technical aspects of the film long in advance.

Talking about the screen-count, the action entertainer will undoubtedly be the widest release of all time by defeating Tiger Zinda Hai which released on 4600 screens in India. Though too early to comment on the screen count, but if the film releases in Madhya Pradesh, it would get minimum 4800 screens across the country with a possibility of even touching the 4850-screen mark. A lot depends on how many single screens, which are traditionally not known for screening Hindi films, the makers manage to lock in the interiors. But as things stand today, a release on 4800 screens is more or less certain.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs of Hindostan is slated to hit the big screen on 8th November 2018. The film is said to be the costliest Bollywood film till date with an estimated budget of Rs 220 crore. A huge chunk of money has been spent on building as well as dismantling the two humongous ships in Malta, where a major chunk of film has been shot. The movie also stars Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in lead.

  16. There were many releases this week and collections were a disaster. A couple of weeks there were releases like Fryday, Helicopter Eela. Tumbbad etc which saw awful collections and this week has seen the likes of 5 Weddings, Baazaar, Chal Jaa Bapu. Dasshera, Gaon – The Village No More, Kaashi and The Journey of Karma.

The names of these films are horrible themselves so what to expect from the collections. Baazaar is the biggest film and has easily got the best collections but they are very poor. It is the only film that has a chance to get over 1 crore nett if there is a better turnout in the evenings. But this collections is a disaster for the film as its not the sort of film that will double or treble the first day numbers.

Saif Ali Khan used to get some fair numbers in the urban film backed up by good music. The likes of Love Aaj Kal or Cocktail did not much find much appreciatton on an all India level but there were takers in the metros but now these types like Chef, Kaalakandi and Baazaar is basically totally alien cinema to even the metros and there are no collections.

The collections of Bazaar may get past the numbers of Chef and Kaalakandi but that is probably because the release is wider and even if it does get past it will not be by much unless the the evening crowd really goes for the film.

The next best are 5 Weddings and Kaashi but both films are have extremely dull collections. Actually they have practically zero collections and will go nowhere at the box office. The releases are even worse which makes it a disaster Friday yet again.

The Hollywood release Goosebumps 2 which was also dubbed is as bad as a 5 Weddings and Kaashi and far below Baazaar. This has meant that the market is still dominated by Badhaai Ho which will be the leading film today by a margin.

In fact even Andhadhun despite being in week four could be the third best film after Badhaai Ho and Baazaar even though Andhadhun has taken a hit in collections on its fourth Friday and practically exhausted its run.

  26. REVEALED: The Real Budget of the Rajinikanth – Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0

We’ve been hearing all kinds of conflicting reports about how over budget Shankar’s Rajinikanth – Akshay Kumar magnum opus 2.0 has undergone. Now, for the first time, an insider from this eagerly-awaited film’s core team reveals the film’s real budget. “It not all the ridiculous figures being thrown around by people who have no idea such things. The actual overall budget of 2.0 is Rs 400 crores, and that too after all the VFX being done all over again since the original VFX were of very poor quality. Also, the film is far more expensive than the usual 3D films in India. Most films in this country using that format are first shot in 2D and then converted to 3D. 2.0 was shot in 3D,” says the source.

In the meanwhile, this costly film has already recovered Rs 80 crores by selling its satellite rights. “Recovery of investment won’t be as difficult for us as is being made out to be. Yes, 2.0 is an expensive film. But every penny is justified,” says a source close to the film.

  31. Baazaar collected in the 2.50-.2.75 crore nett range which is a poor collection but its around 1 crore nett better than it looked in the morning when it opened. The film managed to improve its collections in the Mumbai / Gujarat belt.

This is probably because the film is based on the stock exchange and has Gujrati language in the film. The film is very dull in the North with Delhi / UP picking up just 50 lakhs and East Punjab 20 lakhs nett. Mumbai circuit will be more than double of Delhi / UP with collections being around 1.25 crore nett. The film is the best opening for Saif Ali Khan in recent times with his other films being around the 1 crore nett mark.

Baazaar was far better than the other releases like 5 Weddings, Baazaar, Chal Jaa Bapu. Dasshera, Gaon – The Village No More, Kaashi and The Journey of Karma were total washouts.

The film will not be as big as Stree or Raazi but that alsways looked the case on the weekday collections. It should finish somewhere around the Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety level but without Madhya Pradesh where the film lost around 3 crore nett over the first eight days.

    https://www.koimoi.com/box-office/box-office-baazaar-opens-better-than-expected-kaashi-5-weddings-dassehra-are-very-poor/

Baazaar was expected to open around the 2 crore mark. However the collections were better as the film managed to bring in 2.75 crore*. While the morning and afternoon shows were expectedly dull, things did improve in premium multiplexes across major cities as auditoriums started getting filled up. Since the collections have picked up momentum, there are all the chances for the film to have enhanced footfalls today and tomorrow.

The Gauravv Chawla directed film has also seen some of the best reviews for a Saif Ali Khan starrer in a really long time. When compared to Kaalakandi and Chef, Baazaar has been far more appreciated. Moreover, Saif Ali Khan is in great form as well and that has been acknowledged by one and all with no exception whatsoever. As for debutant Rohan Mehra, he too has been noticed well for his confident act. What has to be seen now is how does the film perform from this point on since there is some way to go before it manages to recover its cost.

    By Ritesh Misra –
    October 27, 2018

Today, 40 years back, Muqaddar ka Sikandar had released and went on to make cinematic history. It was the biggest hit of the year (1978) and along with Sholay and Bobby, was among the top three hits of the decade.

Lets celebrate 40 years of this superhit movie with a trivia journey of nostalgia to recollect some integral aspects of the movie and the main characters.

The magical partnership; Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Prakash Mehra

The terrific journey started with Zanjeer and continued for several movies, Muqaddar ka Sikandar being one of them. Other blockbuster movies were Khoon Pasina, Hera Pheri, Lawaaris, Namak Halaal and Sharaabi. Their last movie together was Jaadugar which was a flop and they never worked again. One Urban legend has it that Prakash Mehra had said that the day his movie with Mr Bachchan does not do well, he will not make another movie with the megastar. Another urban legend has it that they fell out. Whatever be the reason, they did not work together again.

The terrific duo- Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Mr Vinod Khanna

Muqaddar ka Sikandar was the 4th movie in a row which had these two top stars in parallel hero roles, the other three being Hera Pheri, Khoon Pasina and Parvarish. Along with Rishi Kapoor, they also acted together in Amar Akbar Anthony, which is also an iconic movie.

A tale of various unrequited love

In the movie there are many unrequited love stories. Amitabh for Raakhee, Rekha for Amitabh and Amjad Khan for Rekha.

One of the best Amitabh-Rekha movies

Amitabh-Rekha are one of the best pairs ever and this is one of their best movies together. Sikandar and Zohra Begum are magic in the duet, Salaam-e-ishq meri jaan, which is also one of the best ever Lata-Kishore duets.

Same song by Kishore and Rafi

This too was an innovation. The song Rote hue aate hai sab must have been sung by millions on bikes, copying Amitabh who sang it in the movie. Kishore Kumar singing , always amazing, was magic in this song. The same song had a sad version, Zindagi to bewafa hai sung in Mohd Rafi’s voice for Vinod Khanna in Sikandar’s death scene. This was on insistence of music directors Kalyanji Anandji though Rafi who had great respect for Kishore da (and vice versa of course) was convinced Kishore Kumar would sing the sad version brilliantly.

2 Memorable characters; Master Mayur; Highest paid child artist and Ram Sethi; Pyarelal

Muqaddar ka Sikandar saw Mayur Verma, known as Master Mayur, play the role of the young Amitabh. He also played Amitabh’s childhood parts in several other movies and became the highest paid child artist.

Similarly Ram Sethi who played the role of Pyarelal is one of the lovable characters of Hindi cinema. He was a close friend and associate of Prakash Mehra as well and acted in over 100 movies. With Amitabh he formed a comical pair and was also seen in Zanjeer, Kaalia and Namak Halaal.

    Immortal songs and music

No review or recollection of Muqaddar ka Sikandar is complete without a brief mention of its songs. Music was by Kalyanji Anandji and lyrics ware by Anjaam. Kishore Kumar had two terrific solos, namely, Rote hue aate hai sab and O saathi re. The female version of O saathi re was sung by Asha Bhosle while as mentioned above the sad version of Rote hue was sung by Mohd Rafi. For the duet Salaam-e-ishq by Kishore-Lata, the lyrics were by Prakash Mehra himself. Lata had a solo Dil to hai dil while one of Rekha’s solo’s, the song Wafa to na ki was sung by Hemlata. Finally the song Pyar zindagi hai was a big hit too, and it was sung by Mahendra Kapoor, Asha and Lata.

This iconic movie released 40 years back will be remembered even 40 years later in my view. Do u agree ?

  44. The character of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is reportedly being written out of The Simpsons after a controversy.

One of the longest running animated shows on American TV, The Simpsons came under intense scrutiny after Hari Kondabolu’s documentary The Problem with Apu highlighted the stereotypical depiction of Indian immigrants in Hollywood.

The sitcom recently addressed the criticism over Apu’s characterisation in the episode No Good Read Goes Unpunished. However, it failed to pacify the viewers and was slammed on social media for its tone-deaf response to the controversy.

One of the producers confirmed to IndieWire that the show is planning to “drop the Apu character altogether”.

“I got some disheartening news back. I’ve verified from multiple sources now: They’re going to drop the Apu character altogether,” producer Adi Shankar said.

“They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy,” he added.

Shankar said the decision to axe Apu will be a mistake.

  46. Mohanlal starrer The Mahabharata faces trouble; Writer of Randamoozham MT Vasudevan Nair moves court against the film
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkOct 27, 2018 – 6:06 pm IST
For quite some time now, reports from Mollywood have been abuzz about the ambitious project of superstar Mohanlal. The film, tentatively titled The Mahabharata may not completely portray the actual epic but is said to be an adapted version of a novel titled Randamoozhan [The Second Turn] written by Vasudevan Nair. The film, which was expected to be a multi lingual, is currently facing trouble owing to the author moving the Kerala court.

Reports have it that MT Vasudevan Nair has moved court in Kozhikode and has demanded his screenplay back. According to Nair’s statement in reports, he hasn’t been convinced with the way VA Shrikumar Menon, the director of the film, has been handling the script and has been questioning his interest in the project. The reason is that Menon had bought the rights for adapting the book into a film quite some time back. However, the contract stated that the film needs to be made in three years which failed to materialize. This hasn’t gone down well with Nair who decided to take the legal route.

It is also being said that earlier Shrikumar Menon had taken to social media to apologize to Vasudevan Nair asserting that the work on the film has already started. Also, certain reports state that in the statement that was released last year, it was assured that the film will go on floor in September 2018 and a release will be scheduled in 2020. These reports suggest that no compromise or settlement has happened despite the apologies made by Menon.

The film is putting up respectable collections in Mumbai circuit with over 40% of the all India business coming from Mumbai. There have not been many films made on the stock exchange and the business of Baazaar pretty much tells why. Its very much restricted appeal. The film will find it tough on Monday as Mumbai circuit does get hit on Monday and the business in Mumbai is respectable, its not running riot in the circuit for it to take it through.

The All India Distribution Rights of Shah Rukh Khan’s much anticipated film, Zero have been valued for Rs 100 to 105 crore, and different distributors across the country have acquired the rights. As compared to the conventional model of selling the distribution rights to a studio, Red Chillies Entertainment have sold the rights to the individual distributors on advance basis. Only Khan films have fetched amount in excess of Rs 100 crore towards distribution rights, and Zero is no different.

Jai flips the coin — as he has all through Sholay (1975) — to settle the matter. When Veeru finally returns to find Jai breathing his last, he realises the deception: the coin is the same on either side. He flings the coin in the dacoit’s rocky den in grief and anguish. Sholay’s sound re-recordist Mangesh Desai told director Ramesh Sippy that the sound of the coin being flung should reverberate in theatres. That effect was achieved by flipping a coin against a wall and letting it roll down steps during the sound mixing.

In the documentary, The Sound Man: Mangesh Desai, directed by sound designer Subash Sahoo, Sippy fondly recalls the process of mixing for Sholay and what he learnt from Desai, who brought a tonga into the Rajkamal Studios to create a range of sounds for Basanti’s vehicle. Maestro Shivkumar Sharma, who played the Iranian santoor for the movie’s Mehbooba mehbooba track, found the original sound changed, sounding more like that of the rubab. Desai was allowed such liberties. With Sholay, Desai pushed the envelope, creating stereophonic sound and never-before-experienced surround sound, which he mixed at a London studio. After returning to India, however, he replaced the sound of rifles firing with dhishkyaon and added some dhishooms, keeping the audience expectations in mind. The rest is history as Sholay became one of the first Indian movies to market its soundtrack.

Ram aur Shyam was also a big hit in Soviet Union. The movie was dubbed in Russian and released as Рам и Шиам. Seeta and Geeta also was inspired by Ram aur Shyam.

The final show count as well as screen count would depend on the release status in Madhya Pradesh. With just 9 days to go for the release of Thugs Of Hindostan, the industry is expecting nothing but an earth-shattering start at the box office on 8th November 2018. Starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in lead, the action entertainer will release on approximately 5000 screens in India (Hindi + Tamil + Telugu). A few days back ,we reported how the rates for the film will be 10% higher than Sanju, thereby having the costliest average price per ticket.

And now, the exhibition centre has confirmed that the film will get record showcasing across India. Given the pre-release demand for the film from the audience, the exhibitors in metros have decided to open gates at their cinema halls as early as 7.00 am. This is a feat that happens for very few films with a couple of them being Aamir Khan films like 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and PK. As the run-time of the film is approximately 2 hour 45 minutes (165 minutes), the exhibitors have decided to allot a 3-hour 10-minute slot per show to the film. On an average, the film will have 5 – 6 shows per screen at the multiplexes whereas 4-5 shows per screen at the single screens, differing from theatre to theatre and territory to territory. Taking into consideration all factors, the Aamir Khan film will at-worst have 22,000 plus shows across the country, with a possibility of the count touching the 25,000 shows mark.

Thugs Of Hindostan: Some Unknown Facts About Aamir Khan’s Firangi In The Film

He loves his name and lives up to it with his top hat and his choice of foreign booze, which also are incidentally stolen from people. He wears an English leather tail coat in a jade colour, the colour of a chameleon.”

Manoshi added: “Like a magpie, he loves collecting things that shine to his eyes. He has a chatelaine belt from which he hangs his favourite glinting belongings. A rose-tinted sun-glass, an ornate leather canteen of water, a mismatched pair of boots and a ‘potli’ full of tricks, beware of the charmer, Firangi Mallah.”

The actor said in a statement: “”For Firangi, what we figured is that other than the dhoti that he wears, everything else is robbed from someone! Whether it’s his hat, sunglasses, shoes, jacket, everything has been flicked.”

He is a warrior, who is a farmer at heart. So, we have given him a kurta and a dhoti. The former has a cotton and a linen rib with a mulmul lining to give it that softness. On top of that, we have given him a hard armour, which brings out the fierceness of a warrior of his stature,” they explain.

It was a tough task for the actors to film the action sequences on board a ship with showers and sea waters soaking them up. However, the legend of Hindi cinema sailed through these portions.

He says, “The costume designers have gone through a long process of labour to design something. Many sequences where I had to wear the armour were shot in the rain. The drenched leather would become as heavy as wearing a metal outfit. It was cumbersome, but I think in the interest of the film and that of the character, one had to wear it.”

        Liked by 1 person

        • that’s true but that’s a reason to a)get ticket prices under control b)do more genres that appeal to a universal audience. It doesn’t always have to be a big budget extravaganza. Ghajini did just fine, and in some ways even better in smaller centers. In TN or AP the screen count is highest per capita. There’s no reason why the same cannot happen in Hindi speaking markets. This has not been the case historically but this can be rectified. Of course even relative to the screen count that does exist most films underperform. Even when they’re big grossers.

The movie will definitely be a hit… given the anticipation, star cast, bollywood’s reaction to such star cast, production design and its a diwali release. Having said that i doubt it will be a good movie given Vijay krishna acharyas track record with Tashan and Dhoom 3.. both were bad films while dhoom 3 was a HIT/SUPERHIT, despite being average quality. • What is The 5th force, as claimed by Akshay Kumar in the previous poster?

In physics, there are four conventionally accepted fundamental forces or interactions that form the basis of all known interactions in nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear forces. Some speculative theories have proposed a fifth force to explain various anomalous observations that do not fit existing theories. The characteristics of this fifth force depend on the theory being advanced. Many postulate a force roughly the strength of gravity (i.e. it is much weaker than electromagnetism or the nuclear forces) with a range of anywhere from less than a millimeter to cosmological scales. Another proposal is a new weak force, mediated by W’ and Z’ bosons.

  75. Bharat Duration Update: Salman Khan Wants To Shorten This Film By 20-25 Minutes?

After the disappointment of Race 3, it seems Salman Khan has been taking every step with caution. As every time, he has surrendered himself completely to Ali Abbas Zafar for Bharat. It’s also been said that he has been actively participating in the creative aspects of the film.

But now, the rumours are floating that he does not want the audience to see excess of his role in the film. It’s also been reported that he wants Ali to chop the film by 20-25 minutes and make it more compact. The final product of the film will end up being over 3 hours and Salman wants it to be at around 2 hours 45 minutes.

Shaan on Guwahati heckling incident: It was unfortunate but I have moved on
A video doing the rounds on social media shows Shaan getting furious after a paper ball drops beside him on stage. He picks it up and shouts back at the crowd asking them not to create a political issue.

Popular singer Shaan was on Sunday heckled at a concert in Guwahati. After the singer crooned a Bengali song, an audience member threw a paper ball at him. The person also, reportedly, asked him to stop singing and shouted ‘This is Assam, not Bengal.’

He was there during a major earthquake a few years back. Says the Japanese office staff simply went under their tables, in a matter of fact manner. Told him not to panic. It was around lunch time. Then after a while they walked home, since the subway trains had stopped service. Nephew walked for some hours before reaching his place — same as many others.

Loved the place totally, the people, the society.

All the best Idea. Since you have already spent a year in a Tokyo, it will be familiar.

It seems the Amitabh Bachchan-Aamir Khan-Katrina Kaif-Fatima Sana Shaikh-starrer is set to register the highest day-one collections of the year till November 8, when it opens in cinemas. While it remains to be seen what the actual figures will be, here’s looking at the highest first-day numbers of Hindi films that have released this year as well as the all-time top openers.

    ALL-TIME TOP 5 OPENERS

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion: April 2017: Rs 40.73 cr
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo: November 2015: Rs 39.32 cr
Sultan: July 2016: Rs 36.59 cr
Happy New Year: Oct 2014: Rs 36.31 cr
Sanju: June 2018: Rs 34.19 cr

    • ^ This is quite immature tracking/predicting. Movies like HNY, TZH, Sanju had touched 45 cr on their highest day collections (all on holidays) and TOH is releasing on big holiday. 45 cr nett day one from hindi collections will be at normal blockbuster level, nothing extra-ordinary.

With 10% rise in ticket prices, even 50 cr would be as good as what Sanju/TZH has recently done at their best. Add 5 cr or so from the extensive release of dubbed versions (Telegu and Tamil). Anything below 55 cr day one will be kind of under-performance IMO.

And again, the key will be to match Thursday’s collections on first Sunday.

Delhi people may be barred even from using cars. They are asked not to use incense sticks and candles. Really sad situation. Instead of finding ways to control pollution by asking the neighbouring governments to stick to norms. How come pollution is not affecting other parts of India to this extent? Is it due to crop waste burning only?
They should start manufacturing green firecarckers and exhaust the current harmful ones. This will save even people employed in these factories from harmful chemical fumes.
Let us see how far people will cooperate?
Mass evacuation like during the floods can also be one option.
If incense sticks and candles are adding to pollution, what about tobacco products, stoves and other equipments?
This is a recurring problem and some permanent measures are needed than seasonal measures.

For instance I think Ray has a number of other films that are comparable to Pather Panchali. The iconic importance of this film cannot be surpassed but one can still argue for films that are as finely made.

It’s a gripping Norwegian-Pakistani family drama based on the director’s own life, about a spirited teenager who grows up in a conservative Pakistani family in Oslo and is banished to her family home in small-town Pakistan when an innocent act of youthful rebellion is misconstrued. The film lacks in nuance it but it is nevertheless a though-provoking and stirring story with two astounding lead performances.

Adil Hussain is reliably excellent, playing the layered character of a Desi father who is conflicted between feeling paternal love and asserting patriarchal authority and succumbs to social pressure to discipline his problematic daughter in monstrous ways. Teen debutant Maria Mozdah plays Nisha, the passive protagonist of this tale. She manages to portray both heartbreaking vulnerability and subtle defiance despite being saddled with a less well-written part; it is a testament to her superlative acting skills that she turns an opaque character into one that the audience are fully emotionally invested in.

The most disturbing scene in the movie is Nisha’s brutal encounter with the police in Pakistan and it’s very reminiscent of Devi’s run-in with the police of Varanasi in Masaan. The central theme of izzat and cultural pride that is tied to female chastity should be relatable for anyone from any part of the subcontinent, be it India or Pakistan. The weakest link is the film’s resolution which feels far too glib. But I liked it and I definitely recommend watching it.

Homecoming King is so sweetly hilarious and I personally prefer it a 100X to Ansari’s rather odious Netflix show -not that the two have anything in common but I’m tired of Ansari stealing the desi male comedian crown from far more deserving contenders like Hasan Minhaj and Hari Kondabolu.

        • I think those days are done — with Minhaj’s new Netflix show Patriot Act he might be permanently taking limelight from Ansari. I do agree that Minhaj is politically more in the right place, but Ansari is less earnest, more clever, albeit in a somewhat apolitical, narcissistic kind of way (there’s something a bit too gentrified about Ansari eating his way through Manhattan and Brooklyn restaurants; I must say that Minhaj has nothing quite as delightfully subversive as Ansari’s Muslims-eating-pork episode; also liked his Tamil film homage parent flashback).

          Like

        • I find Ansari’s whole ‘Asian representation’ discourse problematic. His method of addressing this issue by casting himself opposite a series of far more attractive (than him) Caucasian women seems very self-serving and shallow for a series that sells itself as trying seriously to solve the diversity in American media problem. Even his feminist routines (before the #MeToo debacle) only targeted the All-American white male patriarchy and were never introspective in the slightest. I like comedians who are self-effacing and I find him far too pompous for my taste. I much prefer Kondabolu for intelligent political comedy and Minhaj for light, enjoyable South Asian humour.

        • Yes his blind (or is it blonde?) spot on women has long been a problem with the show — his MeToo debacle also showed (apart from the fact that the woman complaining seemed to illustrate everything wrong with how the culture is bringing up certain women, to not stand up for themselves), showed some astounding narcissism…

The filmmaker said he never demanded money from the producers or ban on the release of Sarkar. But all he wanted was his “due credit”.

“Sengol is lost to me now. My Sengol is now the Sarkar for Vijay fans. I want them to enjoy the film. This is for all of you,” Varun Rajendran told Silver Screen.

The investigation headed by the South Indian Writers Association under the leadership of seasoned filmmaker K Bhagyaraj provided the much-needed relief for Varun. The writers’ body concluded that the main plot of Sengol and Sarkar were the same.

AR Murugadoss who vowed to take the legal route, relented on Tuesday when the case came up for hearing in the Madras High Court. He reached an out-of-court settlement with Varun and released a letter appreciating the latter for imagining the Sarkar-like script about 11 years ago.

  104. #MeToo: No more naming & shaming in Bollywood without EVIDENCE?
    BySubhash K. JhaNov 1, 2018 – 10:47 am IST

Who will be named this morning? That’s the dreaded question that Bollywood’s biggest names are waking up to. Rumour has it that a top superstar has paid in lakhs and lakhs to ensure no one comes forward with any allegation against him. “There is no guarantee that I won’t be named, although I’ve never intentionally or unintentionally insulted any woman in my life. But how do I know how this works? Maybe something I said 15-20 years ago would be regarded as sexual harassment,” says a producer-director with a spotless image.

A prolific director says, “To be honest, the entire entertainment industry is shaken just now. We have ceased to hold any sort of interaction or even basic communication with women who are not on our speed-dial list, namely our mothers, wives, daughters and business managers. The other day I met a young digital executive who said he was exploring job prospects outside India in case he loses his job overnight.”

Ashoke Pandit who is the chief advisor of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) says his federation is taking stringent measures to stop this random naming and shaming. “People are losing their reputation and jobs on the basis of a mere anonymous post on the social media. This has to stop. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra has been sacked from his job as director in the film Kizie Aur Manny. We’ve asked the producers Star India for him to be reinstated immediately until the allegations against him are proved. Look at (filmmaker) Vipul Shah. Spotless reputation. Then some starlet comes along saying he wanted her to sleep with him in exchange of a role. She went to him and he apparently made this offer. She didn’t get the role and yet she kept going back to him? Boss, let’s have some sense behind these allegations.”

Ashoke says there is the other unquestionably genuine side to the Me Too movement. “People like Sajid Khan are known offenders. The four brave women who have come forward to speak to us at the FWICE have made horrific revelations about Sajid Khan’s predatory ways. We’ve asked him to come forward and explain his behaviour. Not surprisingly he is quiet. And we will proceed with disciplinary action against him.”

Actress-activist Tapsee Pannu who has been appointed a member of the CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes Association) says, women need to exercise a sense of responsibility while making the allegations. “The guidelines for levelling charges are being laid down. Since I haven’t been in Mumbai for quite some time the other members of the Association will have more clarity on the issue. I am sure the Association would’ve figured something out on this. With great power comes great responsibility too and I hope women understand that.”

While Kangana has worked night and day to finish the shoot of the movie, it still needs to be edited. However, Krish has told the makers he won’t be available to do the same. Says a source close to the development, “Krish called up the producers of Manikarnika and informed them that he won’t be able to sit for the post-production work on the film. He is busy finishing his South project which is being planned as a two – parter. It’s become more of an ego tussle now with him releasing the second part of the NTR biopic on the same day as Manikarnika.”

Hence, the makers have now requested Kangana to finish the edits, as well. Kangana has directed 90-95% of movie’s drama sequences. “Whatever portions of the film have been retained are majorly the action scenes, which have been shot and designed by Hollywood stunt director Nick Powell. Kangana has reshot everything else in the 45-day run on schedule that was wrapped up recently.”

    • What’s the point when everything is done and dusted? What is the movement about? Someone talking rude, inappropriate questions or not greeting smiling.

      • The point is that we know how rude Sajid is inspite of his fake smiles. And how they treat outsiders. We need basic manners and one of them is not being so rude.

No, it is not done and dusted. There are more to come. And today another one on MJ.

It is not only about rape but something worse.

    • It’s done ok considering the start. Pretty steady weekdays probably mean the film has found an audience. Saif has had a terrible run and this at least is ‘ok’ and not a disaster.

      • Only people who are interested in stock market may like it. The film seems to have lots of technical jargon related to Stock market and its working. Somewhat niche. Thats why it is somewhat doing better in mumbai circuit which includes Gujarat too.
