        There was something in these lines said during the epic battle of avatar.

        Bachchan was said to be the most professional star actor cum superstar that the industry ever had. Aamir is known for single-handedly taking responsibility of delivering good films since lagaan. These are different approach and attitude altogether, and will have different set of supporters. So no more of ‘fighting’ from my side.

      I’m not sure about China here. It would be a good result for Bollywood if China is receptive to a more masala based format but I’d be surprised – Aamir might be a big star there but he’s no miracle man! Might be a case of take what you get from there with this one.

    I can’t take YouTube hits seriously till someone graphs YouTube hits to box office collections. I seriously doubt there is a huge correlation to total collections let alone trending and only probably opening has any sort of vague correlation but that’s obvious anyway. And with a movie like TOH it’s just a formality it would take this record, I’d be more shocked if it didn’t break this record! And it’s a record I wouldn’t be surprised that 2.0/Zero breaks either or another biggie around the corner.

    Regarding Yash Chopra’s accusation I’d like to put things in perspective. In the first narration he told me that Sunny (Deol) and I would fight but it would be Juhi (The woman whom I was obsessed with and harassing) who would kill me. That was poetic justice. Then I came to know that he had narrated a different climax to Sunny in which Sunny would kill me. So I asked for a joint narration.

    I was concerned about my screen image. I was certainly not going to be beaten up by a regular hero in a regular commercial film. See, I didn’t mind being beaten up by Deepak Tijori in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar because that was a different kind of film.

    But if you have a casting coup like Sunny and me then I certainly don’t want to be beaten up by him or even Arnold Schwarzenegger for that matter. Is there anything wrong with that?

    When Yashji told me it would be an equal fight in the climax I asked him what he meant by that and he said both of us would have an equal number of punches. These were his words, said in the presence of cameraman Manmohan Singh and scriptwriter Honey Irani. In any case it made more sense to have a heroine who has been terrorised all along killing her tormentor.

    Yashji has also said that I had second thoughts about playing a negative role. Far from it… in fact, I would not have glamorised the role the way it was done in the film if I had done it. The character had a mental problem and it should have been played accordingly.”

      Surprised at how much Aamir cared about this. Seems so trivial and silly. I mean it’s poetic that Juhi kills him but Sunny killing him too is fine & after all it is Bollywood. Never ceases to amaze me the male ego sometimes, it’s not WWF! How many punches will I get? LOL.

      Anyway glad this ‘what if’ never happened! They both went separate paths. Close shave missed!

        Its not about counting the punches. Thats how YRF put it across then. Its about NOT falling in line to industry stalwarts’ BS or blindly doing what director/producer tells a star-actor to do.

        Its also a question of ethics since different narrations were given to different stars to make a casting coup happen. Also note how he insists he would not glamorize such a role and would play it naturally rather than ham like srk!

        Aamir was born as an industry kid. He had ‘easy’ access to chopras et al. He was cast in Parampara. Although that movie did not do well, chopras still wanted him in Darr. Had he fallen in line he would have got DDLJ too.

        He was young then and perhaps cared too much about his hero-persona. Superstars are still doing it at the age of 50 and more!

        Its this NO compromise attitude that defines Aamir – sadly not many of his fans get it. Its basically ‘my way or highway’ approach regarding the work you do. It was never about falling in line with the industry, but setting trends for the industry to follow later on (too many of them to count at this point).

        Its not about getting ‘institutionalized’ but redefining the existing institution to make it better.

          I’m glad he’s headstrong and didn’t get institutionalised but at same time it’s pretty obvious he’s taking a dig at SRK here too with how he’d play the character. The K-k-k-k Kiran is pretty iconic for SRK and this role got him DDLJ. I always ‘wondered’ the what if but seeing where they both are now the tortoise has won this race.

          It’s easy when you know the result. Hindsight is the best special power possible.

          Its really easy looking at it after its done. The industry maybe following Aamir at this point, but Kangana really does not have much support within industry except from Aamir. 🙂

          (Not saying Kangana is right or wrong, talented or not. Aamir’s support for her is also at an ideological level – not necessarily that he believes that Manikarnika will turn out to be great.)

          Aamir like everyone wasn’t as matured when he was young. So nothing to be surprised. But glad he didn’t do Darr. SRK probably hammed but there is a cunningness and arrogance in his persona that did benefit that role. And Aamir became Aamir by NOT doing ‘bade’ producers ki ‘chaplusi’. I don’t think he would have done a Sarfarosh or Lagaan or DCH if he was doing movies like DDLJ and DTPH. That was a path for quick and easy success. Not taking anything away from SRK, but I have told before SRK forgot to grow as an actor because he reached the peak too soon and Aamir kept growing and probably still is.

    Do read this report fully to understand how Amitabh did an action adventure film at age 74-75. Hats off to this veteran star for his dedication and sense of youthful fun. I want to see a Thugs of H for him and Aamir, as also the girls. Have loved Katrina in three films( Ek Tha T, Dhoom 3 and Tiger ZH). Liked Fatima in Dangal.And Aamir , of course.

    But irritated to find the Aamir hate brigade terming his Thugs act as irritating,annoying, what have you. Aamir’s character actually comes across charming and funny — for all normal movie fans. He is the guy and Katrina the girl, bringing in the light fun quotient to what looks like a paisa vasool pop corn entertainer. Not deep like my favourite Dangal maybe — but ok, even so.

      I don’t think it’s complete hatred. Most these people will watch it. And it’s also from what I see on some other less well intentioned blogs fan jealousy. The overall response has been pretty emphatic and this is a full blown commercial film – that’s the response seeked. VKA is still the spoil sport here but let’s see. The posters, trailer have done the job.

      Also it’s not just because Aamir is here. Big B is too, this is a nightmare for a few, just from my experience on being on blogs for 10+ years. A trip down memory lane on NG right now would be quite fun!

    Aamir Ali, the protagonist of thugs of Confession was based on a real-life thuggee/criminal called ‘Feringhea’ who was hunted by the british. So it looks like ToH pays homage to the real-life guy by naming Aamir’s character as ‘Firangi’. Also here is a notice on how severely misrepresented the thugee culture was in british literature:

      The main issue with this movie may be that they have made sea-warfare the highlight for the trailer. That was never the signature of Thuggees, even though its ok to show Amitabh the gangleader hijacking a company ship in retaliation to being hunted for the imperialists.

      But the complete focus on ships and sea has kind of made the name ‘thugs’ of hindostan completely irrelevant. There may be more in the film about ‘huggee’s real modus operandi of strangling road travelers … But with YRF you can always expect the most absurd.

        I dont mind a Disney version ala POTC, may actually prefer it to exaggerations of a blood-thirsty occult religious cult of Kaali devotees raping and killing brits for pleasure.

        In VKA’s imagination thugs may have exited only to fight for indian independence. That is as realistic as ddlj happening in my backdoor.

        But if they dont show a single scene of thugs strangling road travelers and looting them as normal criminal activities of that time … then its much beyond a Disney cartoon.

          I feel the thuggees will be whitewashed as they are fighting the british. There will not be strangling as the film should cater to family audience and kids. Blood and gore turns me off.

    In a poll Aamir Khan ranked no.6 among Global celebs in China sorrounded by and above most of reputed hollywood celebs.Aamir’s stardom in China is really insane.TOH might not get a parallel release but it wld happen sooner and later.It’s inconsequential to even compare him with any Indian star as far as overseas or WW stardom is concerned coz his Chinese stardom is bigger than WW stardom of almost Indian biggies.

    The overall reaction to the trailer seems to be quite mixed at least on social media with many people criticising it for Vfx and similarity with POTC. This doesn’t augur well for the film because the makers have done their bit to raise the expectations and presenting it as a ” Never seen before experience”. People were expecting something extraordinary after series of motion poster and the trailer has not matched up to those expectations. These sort of comments that Indian movies have limitations in Vfx won’t help much in the present scenario where most of the cinegoers are well versed with the Hollywood movies.Comparisons with hollywood are inevitable.

    I feel comparisons with BB2 are on wrong foot as far Vfx are concerned, that film had a precedent in BB1 as well as a captivating storyline to offset the poor Vfx .This won’t be the case here, the director doesn’t have a good track record and on the top of that if the Vfx are poor that will definitely affect the overall viewing experience.

    Overall I think this has definitely scaled down the prediction of many trade pundits.

      Aamir would never show the entire film in a trailer even if he cuts a lengthy 3.5 min one. The focus here is on the action and the characters, but even then there is enough hints of a story. Narrative wont be a problem, this is not a D3.

      As for BO, the posters and trailer have done their job. The hindi version will open at 60 cr day one, 200 cr over 4-day weekend and 400-450 cr total. It may cross BB2’s 510 cr, or it may not depending on the film.

      The doubts are about the fates of tamil/telegu dubbed versions and China. Also, critics may question the authenticity of thuggee culture. This may turn out be as as gross a misrepresentation of thuggee history and culture as the brits sensationalized during their time here. But indian film critics are hardly well read themselves … just like indian audience have no clue about vfx.

        And I will say this for the last time. Aamir on his own can recreate a Ghajini moment (Ghajini like reception will take a film like TOH to 400-450 cr today). BUT he will not be able to recreate a 3I moment at BO without teaming up with either Hirani (3I sequel has been talked about) or Rajamouli (both want to make MB).

        Likewise, Hirani will not be able to recreate 3I numbers at BO without Aamir. Nor can Rajamouli deliver another BB2 moment at BO without teaming up with Aamir.

        And trust me when I say this, these three stalwarts are very well aware of this. They may be busy with respective projects and exchanging pleasantries with each other in public. But these team ups will happen sooner or later. I am willing to bet my money that both these collaborations will happen within next 5-6 years.

    Dhoom 3 missed dialogue baazi, which ToH seems to have plenty of. Also comedy was missing in D3. Doesn’t seem so in TOH. Aamir while be double crossing the Brits, and there will be funny moments when he translates to completely change the meaning.

    Watched the trailer on big screen, the Vfx look better compare to laptop/ tv/ mobile. Would like to mention the following things..
    – Most of the ship scenes shown in the trailer are shot in daylight , I think this would have worked better in dark, a bit more aesthetic.
    – The ships that they have constructed don’t look that good or may I say they don’t look of that era as far as India is concerned. I have reservation regarding the place of shoot too ie Malta , I think the look of the location is a bit out of order compare to Indian waters..at least it’s a bit difficult to relate.
    – The fight scenes involving the ships( collision, fighting etc. ) aren’t that grand, especially the last scenes .

      Not too compelled to read individual views here. Even a Bobby Singh video is around like KRK giving negative or disappointing vibes. It really makes little difference, even extraordinary positive thoughts. Collective views are better and it’s just about November 8th and critics reviews. They’ll matter for sure. The collective of those that is. Then the real test at box office.

        ToH trailer is clocking quite some views at YT no matter what (and likes too). I was looking at BB2 numbers:

        Week 1 – 250 cr
        Week 2 – 140 cr
        Week 3 – 70 cr

        BB2 had no holiday advantage. ToH has extra one day in first week and it has the Diwali holiday period to boost collections. Expecting ATP to be as high as BB2. So it can definitely do up to 275 cr nett (hindi version) in 8 days first week. The follow through in week 2 and week 3 is question mark and will depend on the film. At this point I am expecting 400 cr in 3 open weeks … Lets see.

          We usually do 2 weeks (1 week for dev and the next for testing and review/planning). But for this proj we decided 3 weeks (2+1 breakup) as its almost dev from scratch (we just completed prototyping). Trying this to avoid less hassles during verification phase. Lets see how it turns out.

          In my exp, dev cycles in india are more chaotic as HQ keeps ‘updating’ requirements …

          Saket – i hv been in hyper excited mode this last few days as the prototype we were working on has turned out a success and is going into production. 😎 So i hv a reason for spamming this blog … its a major milestone for me as this was first time i hv the role of architect.

          Munna – our dev team here in blore is quite small, 2 testers and 5 developers including myself in our team (my time gets divided between design n coding, but still implementing a module with another guy who does the ui stuff. So our internal testers hv a rough time in the latter half of each sprint. Main QA happens in HQ after the dev cycle. For this proj its scheduled to start in jan.

    wow – so many comments…
    TOH trailer, my 2 cents:

    1). Aamir’s trailers are always underwhelming and this one is slight on an exception side. But the no. of getups he himself has in trailer means a bigger suspense reg. his character is there in the film.
    2). Big B rocks with his dialog delivery – that baritone…..i m sure an astute aamir knows how to capitalize on Big B’s strength and he must have given lot of inputs to bring out the best of him.
    3). Aamir’s characters has chameleon like shades which any actor would die to do. No doubt, he is the hero of the film here.
    4). Katrina looks stunningly beautiful.
    5). I would have preferred DP instead of Fatima who is ok.
    6). BGM by Ajay-Atul is good and it is a good break for them after Sairat. They have an established production house backing them so they have arrived.
    7). BO-wise – this is 500+ deal and no matter what critics say (or do not say) – it is a done deal.
    8). I will be watching this FDFS.

    btw, Marcus-Munna – u guys are into sw dev? I am a tech. recruiter (and run my own executive search firm) – so pl. do let me know if u need some sw guys….recently i searched for devops, ror, java, dotnet and lot of other tech. professionals……

    Shankar interview with Rajeev Masand. Around 1/3 of the $75 million budget of 2.0 has gone into Vfx. Despite that he says the Vfx shall be in middle range and wont be comparable to Hollywood. There are around 2100 Vfx shots in the movie, that means its a Vfx heavy film. He also says that a few hundred could have been spent more, but they had the budget constraint.

    I am very disappointed with trailer.

    USP of last 3 masala movie of Aamir is copied/inspired whatever

    TOH – PotC
    Dhoom 3 – Prestige
    Ghajini – Memento

    There is a scene in trailer which looks like is inspired from Gladiator trojan horse.

    Is it so difficult for him to come up with really original script for pure commercial movies when he does one movie in 2 years? Just with movie name “Thus” they can come with so many ideas.

    Surely, these movies will earn huge on box office, but most of the people like me became Aamir Khan fan because of movies like Lagaan, DCH, Sarfarosh.

    As of now it looks like Rajkumar Rao is selecting much better script , and I am becoming his fan more than Aamir.

    This is my comment after trailer of TOH, I hope movie doesn’t remind of any previous movies.

      assuming that all these 3 films are copied – still, can u pl. tell me how many % of Indian audience watch hollywood films? it is a fashion to run films down just becoz they are supposedly copies…..even if they are….let the majority of Indian audiences decide whether they want to see it or not….D3 was a crap film where I was thoroughly disappointed but what did paying audience do? made it a BB!!!

        I never saw D3, the only Aamir film I haven’t seen since… I don’t remember when. But always felt the Ghajini-Memento bit is unfair: apart from the central conceit of amnesia, there is nothing in common (even the wonderful metaphor of using the body as itself the medium for recording clues, is Ghajini), not in aim or style. Ghajini IMO is the best masala movie since Khakee, and a reminder of how terrific “massy” popular films can be. It’s wonderfully “staged” (in the sense of symbolism and symbolic terrain), and really makes the audience feel that sense of loss. Honestly no surprise it is a combo of Aamir and a Southern director — most in B’wood these days who make “big films” can’t get their head out of their ass long enough to make something like this.

          yeah….I wud luv Sarfarosh 2 to be directed by Ghajini director….D3 had most bizarre slo-mo action sequences as if VKA thought that audience is dumb….ha ha ….can u imagine in a bond film, bond doing a slo-mo bike ride on a rope????? lol……here we have aamir going on a rope in a slo-mo with an entire team of police with guns just gaping at him :-)))))))) ha ha ha….that kind of slo-mo sequences killed the film for me….

          The Ghajini director would be a better bet for TOH. He got the big moments right in Ghajini, VKA made a mess in D3 of such moments but he couldn’t create those moments in the first place.

      TZH trailer has 88M views with 1M likes at YRF YT channel. TOH trailer has same number of likes with 47M views already. Sanju trailer has 0.9M likes from 66.5M views and Padmaavat trailer 0.56M likes from 57M views. No idea if these are genuine or not …

      Riding or driving on some of our roads is no less thrilling experience! In D4 they can show the hero or villain riding a bike through these streets and make viewers gasp with wonder! Potholes, stray dogs, cows and jaywalkers all pose challenges! Yes, we can also park ships during monsoons!

    Fatima Sana Shaikh and Aamir Khan are coming together in a completely different role after their last film Dangal in Thugs Of Hindostan. This will also see the superstar Khan reuniting with his Dhoom co-star Katrina Kaif. The trailer and the posters of the film indicate that Katrina Kaif will be a dancer in this period action adventure drama. However, did you know that the biggest dance number of the film will also feature the other actors too?

    Recent reports have suggested that Katrina Kaif, who will be having her share of dance numbers, will also be shooting for another number with Firangi aka Aamir Khan. The duo will be joined by Fatima Sana Shaikh. Sources in these reports have stated that Katrina will also be having solo dance numbers in Thugs Of Hindostan. But, there is one grand number which will feature the other important actors of the film sans Amitabh Bachchan. The actors are expected to groove to a type of dance, which is being termed as jungle dance.

    The same source has also further stated in reports that the song has been shot amidst a grand set. It is expected to feature the actors doing a tribal dance that hasn’t been explored in Hindi cinema before. These reports also have it that the actors had to undergo extensive prep and rehearsals for shooting the said dance number. It seems that the makers were keen on having this song mainly because it suited well with the period theme of the film which is set in the 18th century.

    Another intriguing fact about this song is that it is expected to feature during one of major turning point in the film. Also, the said source has asserted that Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima have apparently nailed the act.

    Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs Of Hindostan is extensively shot in Malta and is expected to release on November 8 during Diwali.

          Ideally, Bachchan’s death should spark the brit mole to become the next ‘Azaad’. Read somewhere that Bachchan’s character may be from royal background and to avenge himself he turns the prevalent thuggee criminals into an independence seeking group.

          I think we can expect a great note from Satyam and yourself on how its a reflection of passing the mantle of ‘rebel’ in the hindi film industry (although personally I find a huge gap between an onscreen ‘image’ and a real rebel in one’s work ethics and culture).

    I would like generally that Aamir would only work on his own productions….
    Well, this is YRF, whose strength are mass suitability, costumes and scenery. Insofar as expected. I will forgive a bit, because here a dream for Aamir comes true. First Amitabh. Second it’s a real action adventure, it doesn’t happen every day. That’s what I thought when I saw the ships on Malta, it felt like a dream, very impressive (even more as the trailer shows)…

    Good:
    I had feared it would be very dark and bloody. But although there is a lot of violence, the film is surprisingly bright. I am very happy about that!

    Aamir is cute and very attractive (in the funny part, but almost more at the end than he drops the curtain). He can really let off steam when it comes to acting and different shadows and looks, he’ll love it and I love it too. And he can also show strength and action, what more does the audience want? Ingenious role! It’s worth watching him alone.

    I also didn’t expect so much humor. And not such a quirky character of Aamir, although it was hinted at Malta. When I was there was much action and an important long (rather serious) scene, both can be seen late in the movie.

    I also like that not too much was betrayed. I don’t associate YRF with deep contents, but there seems to be enough for a good movie.

    BGM is fantastic! Alone for the ear the film is a pleasure! It gets stuck in the ear. Powerful! Loved also the transition when Aamir appears in the trailer and it becomes light and airy mit irischen Klängen.

    Songs seem to fit well, better than feared after the leaked images. And they are funny!

    Amitabh is amazing. Again Katrina as in Dhoom, but I liked her and she has nice scenes with Aamir.

    Less good:
    I don’t like flying people – because it seems unnatural.

    VFX is good for the budget, but might need some editing. They had beautiful real ships, but they look in the trailer like generated on the PC most of the parts. The last scene is a particular pity. The real ship was destroyed and filmed with a drone, but it looks animated!
    Interesting: I saw the trailer on big screen. VFX and the whole trailer was clearly better than on the PC (for whatever reason)! That makes me hope for the big screen and IMAX.

    Fatima looks dogged and I hope she can shows other facets in the movie.

    Result:
    That’s not Dangal or SeSu or another AKP, but I didn’t expect that either.
    It is rousing, exciting and new (POC comparison is ridiculous).
    For me between good and very good. 4/5.

      This will open v well no doubt. 200 cr over first 4 days is a strong possibility and okayish trending from there can take it to 400 cr total. However, not getting the vibe that this can challenge BB2’s hindi number of 500 cr.

    Very minimal promotions; very short clip of a song with good beat. But it does not tell us much. Promotions have possibly been affected by MeToo movement. Just over three weeks to go for release. Still, enough. If content is worthwhile, film will do well. I hope it does. I want all naysayers on social media to eat their words.

    The video is made good by Amitabh Bachchan. His dominating screen presence is evident here and he is overshadowing everyone.

    This is Big B’s film now from whatever i have seen and this could be the best thing to have happened.

    Song is ordinary.

    ToH will not cross PK and may be second highest grossing film of 2018.

          In trailer Bib B seems to overshadowing just because he have given proper action sequence.

          If same logic is applied on Akshay kumar’s comedy movies … those movies actually belong to Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Govinda.

    No idea how this movie will turn out to be, but Aamir seems to be having a lot of fun in this role. Last time he had such uninhibited fun on screen was perhaps in RDB. His acting in Hirani films has been quite pretentious to say the least.

        This is a film that will be watched with interest by fans of Amitabh, Aamir, Katrina and Fatima.

        Amitabh is this veteran 76 year old, giving it all he has.He has done action, dance, all the masala stuff, plus there’s his acting chops and baritone voice.Not to forget — literally towering personality.

        Aamir is Aamir. We await his films because he has always delivered, to a lesser or greater degree. He is the star that drives TOH, no doubt about it. He may look small in front of the towering Amitabh, but he is going to lighten the scene every time he appears. He would have his dark scenes too, the surprises not revealed. He is also, as always, the man behind the scenes, steering the film ahead. He has always had the pregogative to sit in on the final edit.Has demanded and got it.

        Katrina has her fans and I am one of them. In her limited way,she manages to brighten up the proceedings. I preferred her to all others in Tiger Zinda Hai. Loved her in that scene where she herds the besieged nurses out.

        Fatima will be doing something different from Dangal, should be good to watch.

        The background music seems another big star of the film, along with cinematography.

        So, unless it is really bad, this TOH ship should sail through to perhaps rs 400 crores. Fingers crossed.

        Afterthought : Why do I get the feeling that Amitabh is not enamoured of Aamir and the latter has been trying to butter up the veteran through his public words, lately? I could be wrong, but I get this feeling…

          I think this is a Khakhee kind of film where Aamir is in extended but less powerful role of Akshay Kumar.

          I am a bit disappointed with the british villain. One needed a great actor. They could have hired Clint Eastwood or somebody similar.

          he he @LS, this is an Aamir Khan film and Big B will be appreciated of-course but BO draw is AK. It is AK’s product-marketing-sense and a genuine respect for Big B that the later is given equal or even more space in promotions. That is how a true and secure Superstar should behave. Big B is above any comparison and I am happy that he is getting tremendous space in promotions here.

          I caught up with these newer teasers after a few days away…I must say the Suraiyya video does seem like good fun, a bunch of masala registers are being touched upon in this sort of song (again and again I am reminded of Kranti, that’s the mode here, or I should say that with a YRF/Acharya film that SHOULD be the mode, because they aren’t going to be able to execute much else). The one question mark is that the truly epic mode requires some genuine loss, some tragedy, some blood and sweat — stated differently, there is no masala without some cost, something at stake — and the contemporary trend is for “lighter” stuff that can be consumed amenably, that goes down easily without too many burps (Hirani’s massy films are a good contemporary example).

          I have not caught up with all the comments in this thread, but as a general matter, a lot of the outrage over ToH seems insincere — because much worse (in terms of misogyny, bigotry, and just outright silliness) has been ignored or defended to death where other stars’ films are concerned. Of course a number of people have more principled objections, but that isn’t the case with a lot of folks…

    I simply don’t expect good songs these days! This is typical of big films. Only the video saves this to some extent. TOH needs to up its game and pronto otherwise it may turn out to be an absolute wasted opportunity. A big box office opening will mean nothing unless it’s at least a decent watch.

        I am not saying that , there may not be many Vfx shots in the film, people were ridiculing it for poor Vfx , in reality there are only a few Vfx scenes at least in the trailer.The visuals of the film is an altogether different discussion but calling it cartoonish isn’t correct.

      Agreed. Aamir is the only contemporary Hindi film actor who can tempt me to watch a Bollywood film in a theater, but I have to say that so far, I’m not feeling too keen about TOH. I mean, he had a once in a career/lifetime opportunity to act with Amitabh Bachchan and THIS is what he opted for?! Oy Vey.

      Remember the film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom? The songs were a huge hit, the film that followed — an absolute bore fest.

      I don’t understand the negative reception to TOH promos. The film has the look of an entertainer. May not be high cinema , most likely to get critically panned. But I find Aamir ‘s role interesting and fun. Amitabh , Fatima seem to have more serious dramatic roles. Aamir- Kat Too should get laughs.

        I have nothing yet to see that I thoroughly dislike. It looks an all out entertainer and pretty fun IMO. Aamir’s doing something fun finally and Big B is a towering presence as usual. I would have liked something a bit more darker and mysterious but you can’t get it all. All in all it’s done the job thus far.

        My subsequent comments on the Big B/Aamir song have been more positive. Early reaction was a little presumptuous.

          yes there’s nothing to complain about so far. I do agree with you in this sense as well. This could have been more of a narrative-oriented film. It still wouldn’t have to compromise on all these fun moments at all. Maybe it will still be this but I am not too hopeful on this score.

        It will ultimately be Aamir’s film. Bachchan obviously has a very important part and he’s been front and center in the advertising as well. Nonetheless this isn’t a parallel deal in any sense. Unless I am very wrong about this. But yes he clearly has enough here, and on his terrain, where no one who’s there to watch him will be disappointed. But the film ultimately will be Aamir’s as a narrative matter. As for Bachchan taking films away from other stars given enough of a chance this is hardly news this late in the day. Even in films which had an imbalance in some sense and which weren’t natural terrain for him he proved just this (mohabbatein or K3G). Do think though this might be Aamir’s most enjoyable flamboyant part since Rangeela. I’ve generally not found him as convincing doing this sort of thing in the past but like him in the trailers here.

          I could be wrong but Aamir’s kind of entered the lion’s den so to speak here. Bachchan with the SRK films was kind of on SRK’s home patch, so Bachchan was playing away and did really well especially in Mohabbatein IMO.

          Here it feels like a neutral ground but Bachchan’s got tons of experience from Shakespeare, to Eklavya to Bhootnath and everything pre Aamir. Aamir’s done well enough here and whomever made the comment that Bachchan’s upped his game due to Aamir has got it the wrong way round… Aamir had to look good here otherwise the film would be a disaster (still could be…). Aamir’s upped his game and he’s having a ball. His antics against Bachchan’s stately behaviour will probably provide a lot of humour in the film. And Aamir could have cashed in on the Bachchan combination years ago but maybe he was waiting for a role for himself where he could be a loof or goof to equalise. He can get away with a lot in a role like this – be a hero and villain at same time.

      True, the effect of Amitabh’s majestic intro from the first teaser, and further accentuated by the baritoned dialogues onwards through the trailor, gets absolutely diluted with this ridiculous dance number.
      Wudve preferred for him to remain in his serious dominant avatar throughout. I dont recall Dilip dancing away in any frame of Kranti. Manoj ensured that Dilip’s gravitas remained intact throughout, and it added huge heft to the character.
      Anyway, lets hope for the best.

        Couple weeks back, there were many here putting down Kranti, mostly because most of them were not born when Kranti had released or were not mature enough to understand cinema when Kranti had released.

        So far (from teaser, trailer, song), we’ve seen nothing that is better than Kranti, not songs, not acting, etc… Heck, even the ship scenes looks better and authentic in Kranti than TOH.

        Of course, there’s no doubt that TOH will probably get to 500 crore or whatever number one wants to use, but so far, I’ve seen nothing that makes me want to run to the theater.

        More than Manoj Kumar, it’s Salim-Javed. Their story book was so sound that they even had how a side character with 2 minutes role should be on screen. There’s an interview of Ramesh Sippy where he stated that Salim-Javed even had in script how Asrani should walk in Sholay.

        I think there’s a lot about TOH which is being kept under wrap.

          Nothing remotely laughable about the posters, trailers or songs or acting/dancing (unlike Kranti the laugh-riot). Vfx is a an issue but as i said before indian audience is quite ignorant of ‘technicalities’.

          Bachchan fans may be saddened to see Amitabh dancing like this, but he has done a lot worse in his life. As for Aamir, he is playing an official chutiya role with pride and everything shown so far is in line with his character.

    Love all MO-Clips (more then the trailer) and of course the song in which two not quite young gentlemen are in a party mood and silly. It’s a fun-loving song with a pounding rhythm, funny pictures and a crazy choreo that will be a lot of fun on the big screen (I’ll be able to see the movie in Europe on IMAX).

    All in all, they hold back a lot. According to Pathe Arena in Amsterdam the movie has 185 minutes. There will definitely be surprises and I’m looking forward to them more than I would have thought a few months ago. It will be a huge adventure in the cinema and it will be a lot of fun, that’s my gut feeling.

    TOH is in a safe territory becoz of aamir’s association with it – otherwise many big-budget films off-late have bombed (Rajnikant, Kamal Hassan, couple of Sallu’s films have bombed despite of gargantuan expectations). Also the holiday period will make it rush past 300 – can u believe a crap-fest like HNY did 40 cr on first day becoz of holidays?????? phew!

    Amitabh, if given equal footage, will eat up anyone in terms of performance and impact on the film. However, I do not think at all he gets this kind of deal here. But maybe, he gets enough footage to leave a lasting impact on the film.

    From the trailers, it seems he gets a grand entry scene with that fight scene on the ship, running riots against the British Raj. From then on, I guess it will be all Aamir. The latter will entertain, dance, romance the ladies, fool and con everyone. This is a YRF production and they are no fools. It is a film primarily made for maximum financial gain. And Aamir is the basis to achieve that.

    But Bachan’s character will remain important and pivotal right until the confrontation in the climax.

    I feel Bachan will appear in sporadic moments and these will be the strong and poignant moments of the film. If there are enough of these, it may take the film to a higher level.

    But, if given decent footage, Bachan can steal the thunder from everyone.

      I think a film can accommodate both stars without anyone eating the other! Piku is an example.
      Further one should consider the age gaps which will not permit certain things for either of them.
      Cant we enjoy a film without belittling the contribution of a star?
      Shakti had two superstars, Anand had two, Sholay had more and Amjad Khan walked away with more applause. That was beginner’s luck for him and afterwards he could never equal that.

    Ideally things should happen as what you said. Unfortunately, we all know that this doesn’t happen in Bollywood. It is there always about who takes bigger credit for a film’s success.

    Sure, Aamir has shown in the past in films like RDB or 3 Idiots that for the good of the script, he wouldn’t hog all the limelight. But it is not similar here. In those films the co-actors were not stars and there were no risks that any of them would end up getting all the plaudits.

    Here, it is a casting coup and both characters are in confrontation. So, there are bound to be comparisons. These have already began even here when we look at the different threads on the film.

    Piku is the worst example one could bring up here. We all know Deepika had the longer role but then she suddenly felt insecure when Bachan was getting more praise than her for his performance. As a result, she opted to boycott Bachan at the film’s success bash.

    I think in PK Sanjay Dutt had quite a big part but due to his jail term it was cut off. In that way Aamir is not insecure to face bigger stars. He is bothered about BO success more. And he faced Naseer in Sarfarosh.

      In this Suraiyya Jaan song, Aamir is playing a character who is a spoof. Here he is dressed outrageously in blonde wig, like a Brit Firangi, trying to woo in his own mad way, the Indian beauty the Brits are lusting for. So he decides to out-lust them all.It’s a crazy- funny song, meant to be taken as such. What is so cringeworthy? Even on fb, some TOH critics( plentily available on social media, now even more righteously outraged after DNA website outed YRF’s letter to exhibitors)— many of these armchair critics of a yet to be released film are frothing away about a ‘cheap’ song. Why not try and understand the song’s context? It is not just an item number, obviously, but part of the story line.

      Like a friend wrote on twitter — TOH looks like a ripping good yarn. Why so much outrage?

    The bar should be same for every one. My main problem is that when Aamir is doing it. Oh he is having fun. When other actor do it. They are overacting or making monkey face.

      Ghajini(2008), Dhoom 3(2013), TOH(2018)

      He is doing this kind of thing once in 5 year,

      While of SRK we get CE< HNY, Dilwale .. one after another
      For Salman we get Bodyguard, Ek tha Tiger, Dabangg 2 … one after another.

      What most people are saying that for Aamir once in a while it is fine, we don't want him to focus majorly on mass entertainers.

    From whatever i have seen of Aamir in the trailers, songs etc…his role is for his fans after Fanaah. Earlier he would play to appeal to fans of all stars and that’s what separates him. His universal appealing role got him the biggest grossers aided by long gaps in releases and festivities associated with the timings.
    All these remain but for the role he is playing this time.
    This time ToH is for his fans.

    I listened to the full song Suraiyya, a while back at gaana site. Loved it! The words, the music, the voice( are there two voices — must check). Plus of course the video. It’s a complete package. The song actually has a fifties air about it. And this old style Hindi song is combined with peppy western beat. Why on earth are people complaining about this song? There is so much of ignorance and pre conceuved bias on social media.

    Suraiyya jaaan laegi kya — the words and tune are running in my head.

    Aug 2005 — at home, one rainy afternoon, we listened to the music of Mangal Pandey, on our new speaker system. The music was fabulous. The words, ARR’s music, lyrics, the unique new voices — all combined to give a fabulous experience. Loved the music and liked the film a lot. Sadly, the music was not liked by our Indian public, including so called critics like Rajiv Vijaykar. The film too, did not work beyond initial days. It was panned and mocked by idiots like Shobha De and Raja Sen. But the late Roger Ebert and a few big names loved it.

    I am praying that TOH does not get the same fate as Mangal Pandey. TOH looks like a ripping good yarn, as A friend on twitter said. A funny adventure action drama.

    I have a feeling that many forces are there trying to bring down the film before its release.

    Hitchki is doing good business in China. Can’t help feeling that Chinese audience have more sense and sensibility with regard to films.

        What can be worse than what Raj Kapoor must have faced after Mera Naam Joker’s release and its tanking at the boxoffice?
        And Kagaz Ke phool debacle destroyed Gurudutt. Shaan debacle after Sholay. Aman for Rajendra Kumar.
        Hopefully TOH wont tank that way.

          Shaan wasn’t a debacle. It just didn’t live up to the sky high expectations, post-Sholay. It was still one of Bachchan’s very grossers of that period. But yes, relative to scale, and again the post-Sholay thing, it was considered a disappointment. A number of Bachchan hits in that period had similar grosses but they weren’t comparable productions. On the other hand films like Naseeb and Lawaaris grossed significantly more. Film Information gave it the following rating:

          Shaan 1980 7,00,00,000 A*

          A is their semi-hit category. * denotes universal success.

          Shaan was not a disaster. But it was promoted like a worthy successor or more to Sholay. And Kubhushan Kharbhanda act did not do as much as Amjad’s. Relatively speaking Shaan did not meet Sippy’s expectations. I think he worked very hard for this film. Shaan is a very polished product and today it would have been a great blockbuster. It was like a hollywood movie with Indian touch.

          I’ve always loved Shaan. It’s one of those rarely Hindi films that remains ‘cool’ (like Qurbani). I’m also in a minority of one in terms of preferring Shakaal to Gabbar! Even as a film I like it more than Sholay (this will get me crucified!). Not saying this as a critical matter of course. Sholay is infinitely greater as a film. But Shaan is my personal favorite from the director’s work.

          On the rest following up on Sholay would always have been ‘impossible’.

          Joker was of course a huge disaster. As was Kaagaz Ke Phool. As for Aman by this time Rajendra Kumar’s career was more or less finishing anyway. A number of his films didn’t work in that period.

          I think there’s an almost zero chance that ToH is the Joker sort of disappointment even in the worst case scenario. The Shaan kind of scenario is much more likely. Just off the initial it will get to a massive number even if it fizzles out completely relatively soon. If it’s completely hated right off the bat that’s a different thing but that’s very hard to believe. Not just this film. All the big disappointments (at that scale) over the last number of years nonetheless comfortably get to certain kinds of totals. A film like tubelight never got that start in the first place. And this is why they make films by the numbers where they could go in for a much better script. The latter is still a bit risky, relatively speaking. With the former even if most people find it enjoyable without really loving it that’s good enough for them.

          in this age, when craps like HNY or PRDP can do 40+ cr on 1st day, TOH will be massive on day 1 and by the time ppl start writing bad things about it – it would have had first 7-10 days total of 250+ to 300+ – so nothing of that kind will happen to TOH.
          Aamir with NaMo, Aamir on Femina cover, Aamir on KBC (He tweeted about shooting it), Aamir on Coffee with KJo – daily we will see this man and he will be all over the place by 8th Nov’18 – the promotions are so full-proof that ppl are bound to go to watch this at-least once for Aamir’s sake – so no chances of a BO dud here – absolutely none.

    while Aamir does not need it – we have a historic BO occassion here in the form of TOH – when the Advance will start around 1st Nov – the frenzy would be too much to believe – I know groups, schools, corporates….eagerly awaiting the booking to open to book mass-slots….Diwali Vacation has TOH as the top-of-the-list-to-do-thing for many many kids (and hence parents will be dragged for this)…..a monster is coming on at the Indian BO

    I am surprised that some folks still undermine Aamir here. Every holiday movie of his since starting with Ghajini has broken the all time record..I mean think about it. 5 freakin movies on Chrismtas….5 broken records on Christmas. I wasn’t sure about Dhoom 3’s final gross (the opening was in no doubt) because it just wasn’t a great movie by any means but even that made almost 300! There is not a chance in hell that this movie does not open in record territory and just bulldozes its way to at least 450 if not 500! Everyone associated with this movie has another moving coming up next year except for one person and that guy will make sure that it’s worth it for everyone.

    Excellent trailer. In some ways the best one so far. Hits the right masala notes and the song has that crescendo quality to it as well. This preview makes me more bullish on the film than anything else I’ve seen so far.

    As for Katrina this is a classic example of the #metoo debate we’ve been having elsewhere. In every song she’s dressed like this!

      Katrina’s skin show is ridiculous — YRF has this periodic sleaze in them (Befikrey? Even the rain song in DDLJ, and some stuff in Muhabbatein), or perhaps that is mostly Aditya Chopra, but it is distractingly bad here — it doesn’t serve any purpose (ie it isn’t even an item song, it isn’t sending any particular message about sexiness, it’s like stripping for the sake of stripping). Crassness of the kind one can expect from these guys.

          This film had a great opportunity to showcase some wonderful costumes — instead we get stuff ripped off from Game of Thrones (Bachchan’s look), the circus (Aamir’s look), and tinsely underwear as in this song. The wannabe nature of this visual aesthetic is in our face the whole time, with no sign of the eye for fabric, color, texture, and specificity of costume that characterises the best spectacles.

          Here I’ll disagree a bit. In the Desai masala tradition this sort of thing was very much par for the course. So in Dharam Veer you have Dharmendra dressed like a Roman gladiator while Jeetendra is attired like a more modern European prince. When you get to women it’s sometimes Arabian Nights wear, sometimes again a kind of Amazon woman look, sometimes the imaginary tribal Indian thing. In most of these cases there is still the reference to various Hollywood traditions. And here the films of the 70s in any owed a great deal to various Hollywood motifs or Hong Kong action genres and so on. For instance you get the Ben-Hur-like ‘anachronistic’ slave ship in Kranti. Or you have the colony of lepers (from the same movie) moment in Desh premee. Desai especially loved his Hollywood. You have a bit of the Towering Inferno in Naseeb. But I nonetheless agree with you in this sense. For all these influences or downright borrowing or even plagiarizations in an earlier period the final mix, the palette of the film if you will, was in every sense ‘Indian’. You couldn’t have confused Dharam Veer with any other extravaganza from any other industry despite all the borrowings from Hollywood’s Roman films or adventure romances. The world of those films was very ‘real’ where today it often seems synthetic or at least ‘designer’ (and here your point is on the money). But in a way this is contemporary Hollywood too. A film like Gladiator looks far more synthetic than any of the old classics set in Rome. And so on with other period dramas in contemporary Hollywood along these lines. Here there is a Shakespearean truth. If you take all these things too seriously and insist on a certain realism for a world which is so ‘escapist’ you get in a way synthetic ‘designer-wear’ reality. Desai hilariously mixes up everything in Dharam Veer and it seems completely natural to his world. In very much the same way the older Hollywood movies, otherwise far less realistic in every sense, were ultimately much more ‘real’ as movies. Or Shakespeare at that higher level also is completely unconcerned about such details. To repeat an example the CGI generated Rome of Gladiator is far more synthetic than the Rome which depends on actual set construction in the older films. In the very same way the CGI of the ships in Thugs makes them look far less real than the (probably) real ships of Kranti. If you go the Game of Thrones way you must get it right, otherwise it stands out. But to get back to your point I think a lot of the same was happening earlier in films too (costumes et al) but there was an ‘animating spirit’ behind those films, the creation of a world (for want of a better term), that was able to house all those elements much better and make them seem entirely ‘at home’ in that world than is usually the case today. There is of course a place for realism in a serious period piece, not as much so in escapist adventures or fantasy versions of history and the like.

      I agree with Satyam that the Manzoor-e-Khuda trailer clearly hits a lot of good buttons, especially if the song’s structure is similar to the trailer’s structure (action happening while the song is taking place, with the words of the song providing running commentary of sorts on that parallel action to the film’s audience (which is aware of both tracks), and before the song’s unwitting audience IN the film). There is a long tradition of such songs in Hindi films but one rarely sees this sort of thing anymore.

          In old days you had the climax/finale song which were mostly filmed on the main heros or heroines of the film. And the dance and clothing for main heroine were nothing like the one you would see in middle of the movie that would be on someone like Helen or aruna irani.

          Here, you have Katrina dressed and dancing like Helen.

          This is hardly an item song, precisely because it does not aim to titillate. Sure, she has exposed, but unlike 100% of her own item songs (as well as those of everyone else), her moves are not at all vulgar. She is not busy shaking T&A here, and there isn’t an army of men lustily gesticulating all around.
          The lyrics and steps indicate a climatic event of sorts that has to occur.

          I’m not saying this is the most titillating moment imaginable but the idea that she’s dressed like that and dancing like that just as part of the plot requirement is a bit hard to believe! Hey I love Kranti too but I didn’t think Parveen Babi needed to be dressed that way or that cat-fight was necessary (and so on..)! it doesn’t have to be an actual item number for the woman to be used for titillation. Masala did this all the time. Of course standards have changed. In those days there was the ‘vamp’ doing these songs, these days the actresses are themselves the ‘vamps’ (another sign of regression in the present). It’s not that I’m especially offended here or something but it’s a symptom of things. It is again a long-standing masala tradition to ‘find’ tribals or women from a fishing community and so on to then be paraded this way.

          Your objection would be valid if we were anal about protecting the costume integrity for the period this is set in. Surely, women in 1800 did not dress like this in public. But, we can see that huge cinematic liberty has been taken for everyone’s costumes in this movie.
          If this were not a period movie, and she wore shorts and a sports-bra and was part of an energetic sporty song/dance, would you say she is doing an item song?
          Chikini Chameli, Munni badnam, Aao Haveli mein, etc and countless others are all explicit with ‘titillating’ moves as well as lyrics, and are rightfully panned as vulgar item songs.
          This does not at all qualify to be one.

          It’s exactly the opposite! As for your other examples you’re placing he bar far too low. Just because those are even worse doesn’t mean this one gets a pass. And again I’m not suddenly being a prude about this. I’ve just stated that Hindi cinema has had a long standing history of doing this with some being worse offenders than others. Even if I love Kranti Manoj Kumar went much further than usual. And once again the reason I brought up all of this was in the context of that longer comment from the #metoo thread (referenced it in the earlier comment). Again if top actresses (alright Katrina is very much off peak but still..) can be treated like ‘vamps’ they become that much more replaceable. It doesn’t matter who does this sort of part. You’d have to pay more to Deepika to do this (Katrina probably did the film for free, incidentally itself a problem when you make such an expensive film and find the woman to be most expendable in terms of her representation and her renumeration.. this last bit it also a long-standing tradition) but she’d still be doing the same stuff. It’s hard for anyone to refuse a film of this scale.

          Now getting back to the song it’s not as if there’s one audience that watches those other item numbers you’ve mentioned and this Thugs song as well and then another one [audience] with more ‘taste’ that only watches the latter and totally shuns the former. C’mon! it’s the same audience. All of us! The representation of the woman in all of these songs is very comparable, one might be worse than another but it’s very much along the same spectrum. Even if one song is ‘situationally’ part of the narrative in more important ways this hardly excuses the rest. Much as in Kranti everything was required by the ‘script’ and yet no one had to be dressed that way!

          I’d also add here that it is a measure of the extent to which we are now all conditioned in these traditions that we don’t even find a dance (or lyrics or costumes) particularly odd unless it goes out of its way to be vulgar. Madhuri mastered the art (the only actress I can think of in this context) of making even such moments utterly non-vulgar, in a way she ‘domesticated’ such titillation and made it seem non-sexual (at least to the extent she did). But nonetheless her dances still belonged to that same spectrum. Dhak dhak karne laga most obviously perhaps.

          By the way I would agree that the Katrina moments of Thugs are not as remarkable as some of the stuff the women were doing in Kranti (relative to that age). But still for a top actress to be literally reduced to this is a bit unfortunate.

      This is old fashioned masala. A climax song while hero is fighting or song before the climax fight.

      Satyam can add his view on this but i think in TOH, it’s being made with larger than life type of scenes for bachchan, where every scene has to be like the first entry of the hero (somewhat like south movies).

      In his peak time, at least i think it wasn’t like that. Just his presence made the scenes larger than life versus with TOH where it seems forced.

        yes this is part of what I’ve often called in the past treating Bachchan as ‘national monument’ or rendering him as a museum of his iconic gestures. In many of the older films the famed entry sequence would set things up this way (though even then it was truly larger than life later on, the unsurpassable such moment is in Coolie) and later on things would be normal. And these entry sequences were ‘grand’ without being ‘crazy’. I’ve always been wary and even critical of this move. Have said this many times on Bachchan’s blog as well. This is why I never liked the Sarkar character. It’s like ‘granite’. A kind of museum of gestures but not a real, breathing, human character. Unlike say the Khakee one. Bachchan then becomes not just a star repeating his signature (which stars in any case do beyond a point) but also this ‘historical mass’ no longer accessible simply as a character. For this one has to watch his other smaller films (though even here it is always about the great star constantly attempting the ‘different’). Because Bombay doesn’t really have a thriving masala tradition anymore (unlike the South) you cannot get directors who can use Bachchan by ‘thinking through’ his iconic image. They can only present it to the audience as an obvious, finished product. This whole thing is not too different from Bachchan repeating his greatest lines on stage. But this is not at all what his cinema was about, even in the one man industry 80s phase (though some of this logic had crept in by then). The key film in some ways for this entire move is Agneepath. Already at the time the film was very self-consciously ‘remaking’ Deewar. In grand operatic style of course. And not surprisingly and despite it’s less than great box office reception at the time it’s now commonly considered to be among his greatest films. It’s an interesting film at many levels and I certainly always admire Mukul Anand’s craft. And yet the ‘monument’ is already available in this film, for the very first time. Explicitly so. Something that wasn’t the case otherwise. Since then in every instance directors have attempted to place Bachchan in a masala context of any sort they’ve resorted to this easy kind of reference. Barring again Santoshi who’s old school enough to know the difference. Now of course Bachchan-as-monument is still enough to dwarf the competition but that’s too low a bar to set for him. This isn’t just about the directors, he himself as a performer is more or less doing the same. The problem is, he’s still so impressive physically it’s often hard to look beyond this and note what the performance really is about. But this is yet another reason why I have always insisted on the Bachchan of the 70s (most of all) and to some extent the 80s. Being larger than life when this is a result of the world the character occupies and/or is a gestural economy that is organically linked to the script is a very different matter from this sort of thing. Nonetheless what does please me about Thugs is the minority angle. Specially today I think this is potent in a wholly different way. And so much of the film (judging from the trailers seems to be soaked in this world). Now of course the thugs were supposed to be Muslims in the commonly understood sense of this history but again the film could have chosen a different community as well. And here Thugs seems to be (at least so far) a kind of advance on the more limiting political vision of Kranti. That film was already looking ahead to the politics-to-come (no surprise I suppose coming from Manoj Kumar). Where in a very BJP-ised (before the event) view of India you have the token Muslim doing his part for the cause. Even if I love the film this is hardly Desai’s world! Now it’s a different matter that things have come to such a sorry pass since that even Karim Khan in that film would probably seem offensive to many in the present in as much as there is simply no ‘normal’ place for the minority (specially the Muslim, but also the Christian) in the contemporary Hindutva imagining. Which is why there is no good Akbar to bad Aurangzeb as was commonly understood to be the opposition forever. Now every such king is by definition a foreigner and bad. It’s a symptom of the same logic. Kranti then would be an upgrade! And so at this precise time I am happy to accept the Thugs offering! This might well be the most important thing about the film.

      Bachchan, Aamir, Katrina…all of them look thakela…should have made movie with a better cast. Some actor should have played younger version of Amitabh, younger version of Aamir, with some past/present scenes going. Somehow to make them central characters for 3+ hours, in a movie this physical and watch the old people doing sword fighting in their graves is so boring. and unbelievable even though that base and that voice is to die for , effort of liftingg that heavy sword is gonna put you in hospital. Bigb looks like Geoffrey Rush with nose falling off and Aamir looks like garibo kaa Johnny Depp. And botox queen looks like the plastic might melt any minute in that dance workout routine that she already did and we have already seen before it in dhoom and chikni chameli. So much glitter and shiney halloween stuff on her face that her makeup person should be fired. Meh. Will pass this one. Ok now I need a shield for all the angry arrows that come my way from AK and bigb fans. P.S. I am a fan too but of their older works.

        The making features reveal how difficult it was for Bachchan senior to have done this role, at age 75. Playing an old warrior, the man has lived up to his role, from whatever one sees in promos. Hats off Mr. B.

        The ridiculous charge of Aamir being a desi Jack Sparrow and the film a poor Indian version of POC….it may or may not hold water, but most Indians won’t care. Many of us have not bothered to watch the Pirates films. Maybe bits and pieces of the first film, if at all. The film’s dress designers have spoken about Aamir’s character and dress. There is an interview with them. Aamir’s character seems to be an orphan survivor of British atrocities, a magpie thief who collects his bits, carrying his life on his person. He is surely going to lighten a grim story.

      you might need Eng lessons if you haven’t been following the comments on Thugs. of course it’s also pretty remarkable that someone who thinks Swades is an incredible example of cinema and who also thinks SRK was phenomenal here should find Aamir overrated. If SRK were doing the same films you might have called his work better than Ray’s! Aamir has done good work most of the time since Lagaan, a lot of these films have been trendsetters. You can still call his work overrated as long as you thens top watching Bollywood altogether (or confine yourself to the arthouse circuit.. though Aamir’s done one film hear too! DG). As for Thugs it is what it is, a large screen period spectacle. No one’s confused that it’s RDB! It is being judged according to its own merits or demerits. A lot of what is in the trailers is par for the course for this genre. Nonetheless many of us have been critical at points. There was even for that matter a lot of criticism of RDB recently. But again you might need English lessons for all this. I do agree some of us are very guilty here for liking films like Lagaan, DCH, RDB, MP, Talaash, Dangal, 3I etc. Since Aamir isn’t in Swades we have to make do with these.

    The Yash Raj Films’ much-anticipated film will be releasing across 17 IMAX theatres in India and selected international markets beginning November 8.

Click on that and you will have two options — Chalo or Na Rey. The former will guide you to your destination.

    Oh, and don’t forget to turn on the speaker when navigating. We won’t spoil it for you, but the new voice guidance with Firangi is hilarious.

    Unfortunately, Aamir Khan will only accompany you in the driving mode of Google Maps.

    Starting today, both Android and iOS users of Google Maps will see a new icon on Google Maps that will let them choose Aamir Khan aka Firangi (his character in the film), riding a donkey, instead of the boring old arrow.

    This feature has been rolled out today and is slowly being made available to all users. If you are not seeing the feature yet, it’s because you will have to update your app from the Play Store or App Store first.

    Also, Firangi and his donkey are available only for a limited time. Google India tells us that the feature will only be available for the next two weeks. The movie, Thugs of Hindostan, will release on 8 November 2018.

      On audio, songs have now grown on me.
      Especially Suraiyaa…Katrina has a big huge song here. It is massy and classy at the same time.

      Vashmalle is foot tapping…good but not great.

      Manzoor-e-khuda is better with visuals as it seems to be situational. The song also reveals that Katrina is Aamitabh’s daughter. I hope Aamir is not the son as it would be anti climax. 🙂

      All the songs have grand loud music…something that Laxmikant Pyaarelal used to compose in latter part of their work.

    I feel less songs means more story. They could have experimented the film without any songs. Katrina need not have been a dancing girl. 15 to 20 minutes would have been saved. But then they want to sell music rights and make money. And songs also serve as teasers. And then there are B centres.
    They found the middle way of having less songs and those songs are also situational. Not running around in foreign locales singing usual songs. Or shaadiwala songs where everyone dances like in Kjo films. Only regret is that Fatima SS does not mainly feature in any song. There could have been a song while riding the donkey.

    Has anyone watched/watching “Haunting of Hill House” netflix? Could we have a separate thread to discuss it. It is awesome show and should not be missed. It is beyond just horror genre. Worth repeat watches.

      Episode 6 is master piece. In film making. I suppose. That one I watched again. But the whole series is just fantabulous. Someone went ga-ga over it and I watched it based on their enthusiasm because I am not into horror stuff. The scary bit is fun but it was not the most thrilling aspect (though it is thrilling indeed) of the show for me. It is the other layers, the characters, plot, psychological analysis…If there is perfection in all aspect of making movie/series, then this is it. This is a work of art-auteur director for sure. Absolutely loved it. Bliss, you and I, the great minds, think alike. :- )))))

      Toh will release in China either before the Christmas holidays (mid Dec) or before Chinese new year (in mid Jan). If this was an AKP film it would have probably got a revenue sharing deal.

      This is easily my favorite song and trailer so far. Because it really captures the vitality of the tradition (masala) much more than all the other trailers including the theatrical one. Both the sound and the visuals. The Suraiyya and Vashmalle trailers are entertaining but the songs aren’t up to the mark. With the former the composers have gone in for a somewhat ‘nostalgic’ 50s kind of sound quality but it’s not a great tune. The songs are the sort that seem ok with ‘repetition’ as is the case for most music these days. But this particular one (manzoor-e-khuda) gets it right in every sense.

    Acharya even revealed that they cast several foreigners as extras in the film by going to the airport in the morning and simply asking them. “I always wanted to be in a movie,” a Danish tourist says in the video, “and now I’ve seen a lot of famous Indian actors, so that’s quite cool.”

    Acharya said that the film’s opening scene and conclusion are set in Mehrangarh, which is why it was such an important location.

    In order to encash on the lucrative Diwali release, the ticket prices for the film have been hiked by at least 10 percent higher than those of Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju, according to a report by Bollywood Hungama. The report also suggested that YRF had reportedly asked cinema hall owners across the country to increase the ticket prices for the shows during the four-day extended weekend and subsequently slash the price by 25 percent on weekdays. Cinema halls were asked to confirm the price before opening their advance bookings

    In an interview with PinkVilla, trade analyst Girish Johar said, “The makers are targeting the widest release across all the regions in the country. They are tapping new markets. In India, they are coming right after Diwali which is the biggest Box Office day for India. A film opening on the day, big names and high end ticket prices – so I am sure unheard numbers are going to come out. I am expecting it will be the first film to cross the half century in terms of nett box office.
