8 Day Opening Week: 230-235 cr nett

    • 3 Big BO Records that TOH is chasing …

      *************

      1. Biggest opener

With 5000 screens in its kitty, including 21 IMAX screens, we are expecting the film to collect between Rs 45 to Rs 50 crore on its first day, which will make it the biggest opener of all-time, even surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year (Rs 44.97 crore).

      2. Highest weekend grosser

The film is enjoying an extended weekend of four days and honestly, it will be a disappointment if TOH collects anything less than Rs 150 crore in this time. Currently, Salman Khan’s Sultan enjoys the record of being the highest first weekend grosser with a whopping business of Rs 180.36 crore (5 day weekend). Thugs of Hindostan has the potential to reach this milestone if it receives positive reviews from cine-goers.

      3. Highest Bollywood grosser of all time

In the past, we have seen Aamir Khan breaking his own records and setting new benchmarks at the box office. The highest Bollywood grosser is Aamir Khan’s last release Dangal, which had collected Rs 387.39 crore during its theatrical run (We have not considered Baahubali 2 in the list since it was a dubbed Hindi film and not a Bollywood venture). Since Aamir Khan’s films are known for running for long in cinema halls, similar results can be expected from TOH. The film will also enjoy three week’s free run as no biggies are hitting the screens until 2.0, which is arriving on November 29. We wouldn’t be surprised if it enters the Rs 400 crore club at the box office.

        1. 45+ cr day one record is kind of a given at this point.
        2. 180+ cr 4 day weekend is a possibility depending on WOM.
        3. 390+ cr cume is really doubtful given Acharya and Adi Chopra’s previous contributions.

  2. Sarkar is off to a flyer in TN.

    **************

The early estimation coming from trade say that Sarkar has earned Rs 2.37 crore, which is the highest ever for a movie in Chennai. It means the movie has beaten the record of Rajinikanth’s Kaala, which minted little over Rs. 1.75 crore.

Sarkar has beaten Vijay’s previous record of Rs 1.48 crore in Chennai. Ajith’s Vivegam and Vijay’s Theri are in the next two positions by earning Rs. 1.21 crore and Rs 1.01 crore, repectively.

The AR Murugadoss-directorial has been released in over 650 screens in Tamil Nadu. It has got a great opening across the state with an average 85 percent occupancy in theatres.

However, Sarkar has garnered mixed reviews. The success of the movie at the box office depends on how it performs in the days to come.

    • Inconsistent report. Headline says 400 cr needed for recovery and last paragraph says it needs 280-300 cr for recovery.

120 cr out of 220 cr budget has been recovered from digital and satellite rights itself as per this same report.

Anyone with basic knowledge of elementary arithmetic can deduce it needs roughly 200 cr nett to have the entire distribution food chain in green. Even Zero needs a similar amount to get there.

Bottomline – 200 cr nett needed for TOH and Zero to be declared as commission earners.

  3. The Biggest Diwali BLOCKBUSTERS Of All Time
    Wednesday 07 November 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan will release this week and is the most expensive film of all time from the Hindi film industry so naturally big numbers are expected. The huge cost is not an issue as far as recovery goes as the film has actually proved to be the first real HIT in China as far as big money coming back to the makers is concerned but more on that on another day.

The real test is as always theatrical and its been a long time since that killer blockbuster has come on Diwali. The last one is probably Kuch Kuch Hota Hai way back in 1998. But Diwali has seen some really big blockbusters in past led by the Muqaddar Ka Sikandar with Amitabh Bachchan in the title role which is bigger than Bahubali – The Conclusion comparing with the Hindi version only and among the biggest films of all time. Next is the biggest Shahrukh Khan blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which is also a near 500 crore nett film with adjusted rates.

The last fifty years has seen Diwali dominated by two actors, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan and the former is a factor in Thugs Of Hindostan as well. The big question is where will Thugs Of Hindostan get in the list. A top TEN finish is a MUST while a top FIVE finish will be a GREAT result. A top THREE finish will be the JACKPOT. The list will be updated post the result of Thugs Of Hindostan unless of course it does not do well.

The biggest blockbusters released on Diwali since 1970 are as follows. There could be some big blockbusters before 1970 but that is something to be checked for next Diwali. The list consists of 23 films which have proved to be SUPER HIT or better with a Diwali release. The films before 1994 have not been tabulated to the exact figure so an apprx figure is given.

    • I agree with this BOI article for a change. Raja Hindustaani’s collections in today’s money will be around 400 cr nett for sure. And KKHH was really the last Diwali blockbuster that we had, but it was not a bigger hit than say this year’s Sanju (340 cr).

TOH indeed has to be liked a lot to break into the top Diwali blockbusters bracket:

      1. Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) – 550 crore apprx
      2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) – 461 crore
      3. Mard (1985) – 425 crore apprx
      4. Raja Hindustani (1996) – 394 crore

The likes of Dil Toh Paagal Hai, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Mohabbatein, Om Shanti Om, Baazigar or Veer Zaara were hardly that big hits.

Whereas Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Dostana or Happy New Year were more of PR ‘hits’ than BO hits.

  5. Q. Thugs Of Hindustan will also be releasing in Tamil & Telugu and Aamir Khan is a big pull especially in Chennai and Hyderabad so can that version of the film pull in 4 or 5 crore nett day one.

    A. When Dhoom 3 is only Hindi film has to go over 1 crore nett on day one then what chance is there for 4-5 crore nett. There is no market there for Hindi films even if dubbed. Padmaavat till date has done best but its only 13 crore nett apprx lifetime. The likes of Bajirao Mastani, Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo fell apart. A Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994 has higher business than these lot in its Telugu version. Infact Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Maine Pyaar Kiya are the only films which we can call SUPER HIT and HIT respectively in dubbed versions and both were Telugu only. Another point Aamir Khan pull is better in Bangalore than Chennai or Hyderabad.

When someone asked if it was a proud father speaking, the actor laughed to say, “I wish they treated me like a father. These girls have the utmost disrespect for me. You all should see how they behave around me.”

Stating that Thugs of Hindostan is perfect for the festive season, the actor further said, “TOH is not a historical film. There were reports that it was based on a book but it’s not. It’s an entirely fictitious story set in that period. It’s an action adventure, not a serious historical film. It isn’t also patriotic. It is a very universal and child-friendly film. Though there are action scenes, there is no blood and those (action) scenes are quite fun. It’s more like the films we used to watch in the 70s.”

  8. Any reviews out?
I am actually getting bored with different people predicting almost same thing. Opening day record is going to be broken.

Now reviews need to be consistently 4/5 level.
That bar for similar genre is lower for other star but Aamir has set high standards and will be evaluated with a different expectation. This is normal and often satyam has contested why? 🙂

      • 3/5 with Aamir coming after 2 years of agyaatwaas will be underwhelming for non-aamir fans which comprises 95% of his viewers. His loooong absenteeism and superb script sense generates an expectation which 3/5 may not meet.

He shared a picture of himself with Ranveer with a caption which read as “6th June 2018, Exactly 5 Months ago today, the journey of Simmba began and as this adventourous journey ends for our Simmba a.k.a. Sangram Bhalerao, I am filled with mixed emotions. Simmba being our first film together, was full of fun, laughters and unending memories. It’s truly been wonderful knowing him as a person and as an actor who is honest hardworking and so passionate about his craft.

I can vouch today that no-one else could have been a better Simmba than Ranveer Singh making Simmba (as my team says) My best film so far.

When we started the film he was a young talented star for me But today as he performs his last shot for the film I know I’ve earned a Kid brother for life who is now set to embark upon a new beautiful journey with someone equally as charming and wonderful as him. I am proud to showoff today that my Simmba is marrying my Meenamma!!! I Wish them all the luck for a blissfully beautiful future together.”

‘Simmba’ which is scheduled to release on December 28 also stars Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana and Siddhartha Jadhav in pivotal roles. The stars of ‘Golmaal Again’ will also be seen making a cameo in the film.

  20. 50Cr nett worth of collections people cannot lie. Things will be crystal clear tomorrow irrespective of a review from Raja Sen or not. At this stage it seems this movie will envoke a polarised set of opinions IMO. A Dhoom 3 like response will give Twitter what it needs and I’m sure the film will suffer hugely. Minimally it needs a Fanaa like response but that film at least had music going for it. A Ghajini type response might be wishful thinking but I think the movie needs this now, such has been the negativity in recent days.

    Mangal Pandey/D3 response – 200-250 Cr
    Fanaa response – 350-400 Cr
    Ghajini response – 450-500 Cr+

    I will hope for only 2 scenarios;
Flop – Aamir takes that pill (walk of shame) and avoids Victor/YRF for life
Blockbuster – Victor will be famous for getting the legends together and delivering a film much better than D3.

In between leaves everyone in limbo and the chance this can all happen again which I sincerely hope not!

    Like

    • A film with d3 response will do close to 300 cr today which should ensure the movie is a safe proposition considering the cost involved.

      Like

      • All this ‘safe’ commercially etc is trade talk. Economically the film is already pretty safe. It’s theatrical business needs to reach a certain level of respectability that matches the cost of production. A 200Cr film doing 300Cr business is not smart for Aamir. The guy does a film every 1-2 years and has to deliver either a commercial blockbuster or something like Talaash (which is safe commercially but has at least a niche fanbase, hence shell life).

And 300 Cr here is enough for Twitter to blast Aamir and co – it will IMO need to do 400Cr to justify the billing of Big B Aamir Katrina YRF etc.

Let me confirm my comments. If the film is universally considered a dud, it should do ‘rubbish’ business so that Aamir and co learn. Obviously if the film finds its audience and is liked, I wish good things.

        • There are many films I don’t like that do well at box office and vice versa. My opinion is overrode in these cases by the major opinion. I love Talaash or Mangal Pandey but can make sense of why they didn’t do well. Likewise I didn’t like D3 or Raja Hindustani but have the bandwidth to understand why they did well. Hopefully here I like the film and it’s liked. Goes without saying this would be true for any film.

          Like

        • Rubbish business? Maybe in an ideal dream world. There will be enough takers for a D3 like shitty film. Remember D3’s theatrical run?

However, there will not be one raja sen but an army of them making fun of the film. But as long as it brings decent money, Aamir will indulge in this every 4-5 years.

This will make 300 cr, even if its at D3 level. (And lets not confuse that D3 was as bad as Race 3 or Dilwale).

    • He will not fail, I agree with that. However, dont think TOH is worth 2 years of his life at this stage of his career (things were different in nineties in every way).

I wudnt mind him taking 5 years off to make 3 MB films with Ambani’s 1000 cr or whatever. That is some risk worth taking. But surely not doing a film like TOH with guyz like acharya and chopra and spend 2 damn years on it!

      • Ideally Aamir should have produced this sort of thing.. and made all these decisions himself.. we’d see a better script, better production decisions (Aamir is not the guy trying to spend the most money! He’s the guy trying to get the best deal for the subject he has), a better soundtrack as well, probably a different director. Clearly he’s not been asleep as things stand but it’s still not as the same as being the producer. And this is where Bombay often lacks imagination. You don’t have to worry about the Mahabharata. You can do all that right here in TOH! Every good masala director in the 70s knew this.

  25. I’ve been following all the comments on TOH. Not really concerned about its box office prospects in any sense. Unless the reviews are mostly poor. In terms of whether it does 50 on day 1 or 60 or whatever, all of this doesn’t interest me very much. because this won’t be the difference between the film being an ultimate grosser or not. Now it’s true that the soundtrack has been mediocre, the trailers have been fine but not crazy good or something.. on the other hand all of this doesn’t affect the opening of the film in any sense inasmuch as there’s literally no one who will not show up for the film on these grounds. Yes reviews and WOM will impact things but that’s true for any films. This is something so obvious it scarcely needs to be repeated. D3 is still the best comparison here. A film which also didn’t have a great soundtrack but again no one was going to miss this one. The film wasn’t loved by too many people, not liked especially by too many people either. Everyone however showed up which is why the film kept breaking records for 10 days. After this it slowed down considerably. It was still the biggest grosser at the time. Today however TOH cannot cross Dangal with that sort of trajectory let alone BB2. But it could still do 350 or so with a D3-like response. I will say that nothing so far has really surprised me about TOH. This is what I (along with some others here) have been saying from day 1. It’s not really about Acharya either. Yashraj could have given this film to any director. Secondly when you have Bachchan and Aamir together and that too in a period setting you have the responsibility to really come up with the best script possible. If you however settle for a ‘by the numbers’ deal (the biggest film that pushes all the right buttons but is just passable at the end of the day) then it’s entirely your fault. Given Yashraj’s track record I always felt this was a real possibility unless proven otherwise. Similarly I am not at all surprised by the music. Nonetheless the film does seem to have more genuine masala angles than I would have expected, also it seems to be invested in some real Desai-like political coding. Ultimately it will be about the script but I think there’s a better than average chance that this film is better than the previews (which wasn’t true for D3, though it had the best script in the Doom series it was also seriously imbalanced in other ways). It’s certainly not cheating on the Bachchan-Aamir matchup. Finally with Aamir’s involvement it would have to be quite a blunder of historic proportions to get the film so wrong that it’s just a total loser (not talking about ‘safety’ here). Just don’t think that’s likely. At least Aamir has never made such a mistake since Lagaan. MP was a different sort of deal and even then the failure was exaggerated at the time, Talaash was niche deal, only Aamir could have gotten it to 90 or so. D3, despite the eventual disappointment in trending nonetheless became the biggest grosser. TOH has more things in place, more inherent strengths than all of those films, including even D3 (where it might be argued that Aamir was never necessarily the best fit for that plastic terrain). To make a good enough film that’s not fantastic (my expectation) is one thing, to mess it up completely would be quite another. Certainly I’d be amazed to see this happen. The only question now is: assuming it’s ‘good enough’ and not ‘fantastic’ (being conservative here) how much does this mean in terms of the gross? I think it could still be a very serious gross or even the biggest gross as long as the script does the job well enough. Put differently almost all of the other super grossers are to my mind either ok films or more often than not worse than this. With the exception of the Aamir efforts of course. It’s not as if Salman gets his 300 with ‘good’ films! TOH should have the biggest week 1 or even the days unless they’ve completely messed it up. But yeah as always it is about WOM (and the reviews should be an early indicator of this). This is so even for the films that are considered blockbusters. Dabanng for example. Why didn’t this film repeat Ghajini’s trending? The numbers don’t lie. All else being equal (comparable initials etc) the numbers always tell you how much a film was ultimately liked or not relative to another. All of this is a long way of saying, hey there’s no reason to be anxious about TOH at the moment. Unless one expected something better than what one has seen so far in the advertising. To repeat I’ve not been surprised but I do think they’ve gone a bit further in some masala directions (at least the ones I consider worthwhile) than I would have thought earlier.

actually, if you see the promotions, it is Aamir Khan everywhere….so basically he is carrying the whole thing on his shoulder…..Big B, YRF, Kat’s goodluck-charm all are bonuses….it is an Aamir Khan movie arriving after 2 years – that is the biggest USP i can sense…his movies are consistent trenders….

      Like

      • I don’t agree, the real USP here is Bachchan-Aamir together for the first time. Of course as the younger star it will be Aamir’s film ultimately but I suspect Bachchan’s role is symbolically potent here and will mean more than the footage. The trailers seem to suggest as much. Also remember that Aamir is on his [Bachchan’s] turf which wasn’t true for Mohabbatein/K3G. But again success here still benefits Aamir the most. What more can Bachchan really do at his age?! The same holds for any kind of underperformance.

        Liked by 3 people

        • put differently from SRK to Aamir you can do the biggest films but for the truly ultimate film you need to include Bachchan. Salman had the same idea for Race 3. Glad Bachchan pulled out of this one! on TOH it’s great that they’ve also done a period setting to create that ultimate film.

the only other extraordinary deal would be Aamir-Salman together but it’s hard to imagine a film that could work for both of them. SRK-Aamir would also be big and here it’s easier to think of a script for both of them. Meanwhile SRK-Salman could certainly do a Karan Arjun kind of deal with Rohit Shetty!

      • The whole movie has been pegged as both together. Remember the scroll invitation? It ignores the females completely and invites people to witness first time pairing of these 2. The trailer/promotion starts with Big B (I will assume mostly out of respect), the trailer ends with Big B’s dialogue. First song release was Vashmalle (both). The Diwali message is both. The film only works if Big B has a significant contribution in terms of narrative. I don’t understand any insecurity in admitting this. It would be a stupid movie if they didn’t do this. Everything suggests Big B has a substantial role and probably way more than KK & FSS. Obviously Aamir Khan will be the lead. This is precisely why narratively D2 and D3 are failures as the battle between good and evil is in favour of the villain footage and importance wise.

  26. HYDERABAD seems to be always stronger when it comes to advance bookings. Any particular reason for that?

I remember in 2011 I watched Saheb Biwi aur Ghulam in Hyderabad and the tickets were very, very affordable. I remember there wasn’t any looting like the multiplexes in Bangalore and Bombay have like jacking up rates dis-proportionately for different show-timings or any such stupid ceilings. Is that still the reason?

    The Amitabh-Aamir fight

When Aamir was asked about Black in 2007, during TZP’s release, he talked about BLACK rather negatively, without even bothering to see the original and understanding that BLACK was actually a pretty faithful copy of the Patty Duke/Anne Bancroft movie when it comes to the rigor/harshness with which the child is treated by its tutor. With Bhansali at the helm, of course the drama would be heightened [what with the plot of Alzheimer’s afflicting AB’s character and the student taking care of the teacher angle]. It was OK if Aamir felt the movie was manipulative or was harsher — and the weird thing is he had already spoken to Amitabh about the fact that he didn’t like BLACK — on the kid’s character, etc. but then he continued into the wilderness talking of how he couldn’t make out whether the folks in Black were living in a church or some orphanage or a library!! Now Bhansai always sets his movies in Bhansalipur! Aamir should have known this!!

In his entire career, if there’s one film that AB has reacted emotionally to when people spoke it, it’s BLACK. He always has a standard answer for his films that if the audience doesn’t like, I will move on and try to better myself, but I won’t bad-mouth them in public. But it was with BLACK that his responses got emotional. His fans might get emotional with DEEWAR or TRISHUL or his other movies but for him, it was BLACK. It was the actor in him speaking out.

Even before this, and in a weirder way, somewhere when AB was in semi-retirement [around 1993 or 94] and was content, Aamir came up with some, with all due respect, dumb statements when he was asked who his favorite actor was. He talked of Kamal, Amitabh, Raghubir Yadav, and Naseer. He continued Amitabh, and I am paraphrasing; that he loved AB till his AAA phase and then didn’t. That’s fine. He said he would have liked him even more if AB took some social responsibility and played some better characters so that his fans wouldn’t come out on the streets and act like ruffians and break laws!! This was one of the dumbest statements that Aamir has made in his career, displaying a complete lack of understanding AB’s career trajectory and the times he lived/acted in; though I can understand and am completely with Aamir as being in a phase where he was still evolving and understanding cinema. Curiously, there was no reaction from Amitabh; ill-will or otherwise. [This was in CINE BLITZ or MOVIE magazine, I am unable to reproduce the link, but it’s etched in my mind.]

Maybe that’s the awkwardness that some folks feel when AB and Aamir interact and specifically Aamir fan-boyism toward Amitabh. But it’s true that Aamir is a big fan of AB. It’s hard not to be — as an actor or as an audience. As a human being, to each his own.

    Happy Diwali all!!

Still as a film it is better than Dhoom3.. Bachchan has done his part well but his fans won’t be satsfied due to less screen space.. Film turns boring at times but still has much for front benchers.. Overall mass audience may like it and from Monday onwards may find acceptance only in single screens.

On Gadar days there was no social media but after that it was the Bahubali-2 which became an event film. People were posting there Bahubali-2 ticket in Twitter and Facebook. Family photos from inside multiplex. Bahubali-2 was like a festival. Everyone wanted to enjoy it. Everyone wanted a slice of Bahubali-2. There were enough controversies with those numbers at the time of release. An opening of 37-38 cr day one was PR-ed as a 45 cr record. It got to some 170 cr or so from that start. Even Race 3 got to 130-135 cr starting from a 25 cr day one (unless you are willingly naive to buy the producer totals of fraudsters like srk, salman or great roshans).

Anyways, I am now ‘debating’ this with the guy who thrashed SS one year back for making 13X of its opening day and it was just an ‘above average’ film …

  46. Derailed by intervention groups
The case of Avni is a prime example of a case derailed by online intervention groups. They created unnecessary pressure for forest officials through social media and litigation, so much so that the authorities hesitated and failed to act when they should have. Being trolled on social media not only scared the authorities but also some otherwise vocal conservationists, who silently allowed apathy to take hold when they should have opposed it.

Even under ideal circumstances, removing a tigress with cubs from her domain is a tall order, more so when an entire tiger cult-like intervention group is monitoring the pulse of the situation. The state authorities nevertheless took the harsh decision to kill Avni. There must be genuine reasons behind this decision, especially considering that forest officials, wildlife non-governmental organisations, biologists and conservationists unanimously let this happen. If we try to understand the issue in its totality, the decision taken was possibly the only option.

  60. It is billed as the most expensive Bollywood film to date and only the fifth Indian movie to be remastered in the IMAX format.

Yet, Thugs of Hindostan, which hits theatres on Thursday, November 8, and is the big Diwali release of 2018, may not have as easy a run at the box office as previous Hindi films did during the period.

At Rs 2.2 billion in terms of the size of its budget, Thugs of Hindostan, which stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, will have to make Rs 4 billion to break even, say sector experts, since half of the net collections go to the distributor.

The producer gets the other half. And with a three-week window available before Rajinikanth’s 2.0 hits the box office (on November 29), experts say the producer of Thugs of Hindostan, namely Yash Raj Films, is practically skating on thin ice.

Typically, Diwali releases have at least a month at their disposal to shatter records. While some experts argue that records today are broken in a matter of weeks and competition for eyeballs is a way of life, that may not be the case with Thugs of Hindostan, given its steep production budget.

The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju, for instance, took 16 days to reach Rs 3 billion in box office collections this June and it was made with a budget of Rs 700 million.

Plus, say experts, Sanju had strong buzz and positive word-of-mouth riding in its favour. In the case of Thugs of Hindostan, it is not clear which way the wind will blow, since the movie’s trailer has received mixed reactions so far.

“Getting the opening won’t be a problem. Diwali is a big festival and people will flock cinema halls with their families, giving the film enough footfall to reach Rs 500 million on Day 1. But the buzz around the film is somewhat tepid for the distributors’ confidence. If the word of mouth for the film continues to be weak, it could see a sharp dip in footfall on the very next day following release,” says Shaaminder Malik, an independent distributor (North India) and a trade analyst.

While Yash Raj Films was not immediately available for comment, an executive in the know said the studio had targeted 5,000 screens on the opening day of Thugs of Hindostan, giving it a likely strong opening.

But the challenge would be to sustain the momentum through the ensuing weeks, which appears difficult. The studio is said to have locked deals worth Rs 600 million each for the digital streaming and satellite TV rights.

But this may not be enough because it still requires to make at least Rs 2.8 billion to Rs 3 billion at the box office to break even.

Incidentally, advance bookings for Thugs of Hindostan, which opened on November 3, have been largely for the first day of the film only, experts tracking the market said.

I will watch the film with an open eye, I liked the trailer a lot. I can only think of one film like this which I liked but audience panned – Jagga Jasoos.

Marcus.. that’s why wise men day keep your expectations in check. You are the one who was throwing 55-60 cr opening day and 500cr+ lifetime. I am saying ToH as MELA-2 because of Aamir’s acting. I am still saying film will do around 300 cr. Problem with you is that you knew what was coming still you went on an on with your prediction. Look at me I have 250 cr expectation from ZERO even in best case scenario and now after seeing SRK’s over the top hamming in ZERO my expectations are 200cr+ in best case scenario. So my friend it is you who were talking about the capacity of indian BO is 75 cr. So now be ready to get the brickbats. I am again saying ToH will so around 300 cr.

    Like

    • LOL … If ToH underperforms it does not mean per day capacity is any less than 75 cr! Logic of srk fans i guess, what else can you expect from zero supporters? 500 cr was always the upper limit for this film and I have maintained all throughout the build-up that 400 cr will be good for this. Anything less than 300 cr is embarrassing since 2 yrs of Aamir’s time went into this.

[ Personally I would want this to end in Race 3’s total of 130 cr or so (in real terms not PR figures) so Aamir learns his lesson. Else we will get another such film in 5 years time. ]

Zero needs 200 cr nett for recovery and barely be a commission earner. So your best expectation is that Zero wont flop, good luck with that!

Only Aamir Khan seems to be paying any attention to the proceedings, and he ensures that the movie springs to life when he is around. Director Acharya, who has also written the screenplay, reserves the best lines for Firangi, and invests the most in his appealing crookedness. Aamir Khan’s eye-rolling is in line with his previous comic turns in Rangeela and Andaz Apna Apna. But Firangi cannot save this Mangal Pandey-on the-sea saga from being scuttled by its ineptitude and palpable disinterest in approaching the freedom struggle with fresh eyes.

  73. Thugs Of Hindostan Takes Bumper Opening
    Thursday 08 November 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan took a bumper opening as expected of around 65-70% which is the top opening of the year beating Baaghi 3 which had the best morning occupancy till date this year. Its the biggest day of the year for box office collections so this was always on the cards. The trailer recieved mixed response but at the ground level there was always going to huge interest to watch this film.

The film is the most expensive film in the history of Hindi cinema costing around 260 crore without the remuneration of Aamir Khan but despite this huge cost its not much of an issue as its the first real winner in China as far as money back to the makers is concerned. The film does not even look for China but Aamir Khan seems to bigger there than it actually looks. The film has got a $20 million (145 crore) minimum guarantee from China and then there is Overflow to share if it gets any. Films like Dangal, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Hindi Medium have done huge there especially the first two but this sort of money has not come back home. On top there is the 150 crore from satellite and digital which takes it to 300 crore with just these three revenue sources.

These insane recoveries are all good and well but that real fight is theatrical as this is where the audience comes to play and the expectations are huge for the film. The start is huge but its about the holds especially post the weekend in the case where the film goes theatrically.

The expectations will be of 300 crore nett plus and if its liked universally then it will cruise past that mark. The bare minimum necessity on a worst case is the Diwali record which is held by Golmaal Again at around 205 crore nett last year. The last real big one on Diwali was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 which went past 300 crore entt (adjusted rates) and since then nothing has gone to 300 crore nett plus.

There is not much to say about the initial as its huge all over. Its a bit slower in Gujarat and parts of South but eventually the audience come. The collections in UP and Bihar are insane especially for an Aamir Khan starrer which tend to be bit weaker in these areas. The real tests for the film begin after day one and remains to be see what are the levels. Gujarat has a prolonged holiday period over Diwali but the higher services taxes are killing that market as there has been another increase this week and this has been the case since GST came into force. The total taxes in the state are now nearly double of what it used to be at the time of Entertainment Tax.

  81. Bachchan’s Khudabaksh is a cinematic figure and as a warrior on horseback, he revisits his iconic avatars in Khuda Gawah and Ajooba. Even while he doesn’t speak for the first hour of the film, his character packs a silent intimidation. Much credit goes to the makeup and costume team for completing his leathery face with scars that wordlessly convey that every wound has a story. But the true lead here, who occupies almost every second frame, is Khan’s Firangi who for some reason resembles a leprechaun with a nose ring. His caricaturish ways can be pinned on the fact that his over-the-top character demanded deliberate exaggeration. But this excessive performance can be overbearing at times and it doesn’t help that the dialogue offers little novelty. Shaikh is the worst cast here. While her Zafira is marginalised for a large part of the film, she barely holds her ground in the critical monologue when she gets undivided focus. But the one who should stand up for being objectified is Katrina Kaif whose Suraiyya is almost a prop in the film — her three scenes cling to the item numbers she features in.
Given how long India was colonised, a fantasy tale of retribution would be suitably gratifying as it touches a distinct patriotic sentiment. But since this one drags along as if this freedom struggle was playing out in real time, the inevitable triumph barely hits the spot.

    Thugs of Hindostan review:

the extraordinarily mounted canvas with very well choreographed action scenes take the cake in this film which is, quite honestly, a mess of a storyline which relies on Race 3-like double crosses and lame twists. It is still engaging thanks to Aamir’s fabulous act.

Fatima Sheikh disappoints as the female lead. Can’t believe someone who acted so well in dangal proving to be a damp squib here.

Katrina is strictly eye candy while Amitabh is shockingly reduced to a caricature. Its criminal considering an actor of his stature being given such less screen time and lended a one dimensional character compared to Aamir who is a one man show.

Aazad is just an idea here, and it’s embarrassing to see the angry old man whimpering and struggling while the morally bankrupt Firangi Mallah gets the scene stealing lines

Aamir’s script sense might work well for the single screens but it is overall a disappointing effort. A good attempt at masala but he has conpromised big time on the story in favour of his one man show.
Mixed feelings on this one. Its engaging no doubt but ultimately an exhausting effort.

It’s a YRF and remember Aamir’s worst films in recent times came under this banner. If It tanks, Asmir is the biggest loser here, since he has devoted 2 years of his life to this and he has nothing else lined up.

  90. Thugs Of Hindostan Is 8th Bumper Opening For Aamir Khan
    Thursday 08 November 2018 15.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan took an earth shattering opening today across the country and is the eighth bumper opening in the career of Aamir Khan. There is a different definition of bumper between a Dil (1990) and Thugs Of Hindustan (2018) as the days of 95-100% occupancy are long gone unless restricted release. But today even restricted release fails to get occupancy on day one.

Thugs of Hindustan is the 45th release of Aamir Khan and eight of these films have taken a bumper opening. Rang De Basanti had a healthy number which as a number can be called bumper but the capaity potential had really grown in the six months prior to the release of this film which led to occupancy which was not bumper for Rang De Basanti

Amitabh Bachchan also has a bumper opening to his name after a long time with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham being the last one in 2001. In total there could be 30 bumper openings for Amitabh Bachchan as in the eighties and early nineties it was bumper for nearly every film be it that film eventually turned out to be a HIT or FLOP.

The eight films of Aamir Khan to take a bumper opening are as follows.

    1. Dil (1990)

    2. Ishq (1997)

    3. Mela (2000)

    4. Fanaa (2006)

    5. Ghajini (2008) – Holiday

    6. 3 idiots (2009) – Holiday

    7. Dhoom 3 (2013)

    8. Thugs Of Hindustan (2018) – Holiday

There are a few holiday releases with 3 idiots, Ghajini and Thugs Of Hindostan but both Ghajini and Thugs Of Hindostan would probably be bumper even if non holiday.

“It is thus left to Khan and the technical departments to save this film, and they do. Thugs of Hindostan’s production designers (there are four) and DoP Manush Nandan ensure that the film is never short of pretty and grand. John Stewart Eduri serves up a throbbing background score and Ajay-Atul’s songs are all hummable.

Given the only well-written character in Thugs of Hindostan, with an abundance of mischievous dialogues and credible motivations, Khan throws himself into his role with gusto, summoning up Munna of Rangeela and Siddhu of Ghulam, imbuing Firangi with a relentless zest, and switching from good to bad to inexplicable to exasperating to lovable within a twinkling of those delightful kohl-lined eyes.

Thugs was promoted as the first film ever to pit him against the great Bachchan. The legendary superstar is a pale shadow here of the best he has been. Khan, on the other hand, crackles, pops and sparkles as a swashbuckling scoundrel. The writing of his character and his performance are the only reasons why Thugs of Hindostan does not turn out to be a stylishly produced but disastrously dreary repeat of Acharya’s first film, Tashan. Despite all its minuses, Thugs is light-hearted fun.”

      • I wont be surprised if this was exactly the response Aamir got from the few focus screenings they had during editing phase. And since the main flaws are lack of plot/story and weak screenplay (apart from Firangi’s characterization), there was not much to do to rectify during edits. If the foundation is weak, there is only so much you can do.

No surprise that Aamir went around during promotions
saying that only reason he did this was because he liked the character. Reading between the lines, the final product had made him realize that he had erred on script selection. He will take what he gets here.

The minister threatened to “take action against the actor and the team” and alleged that the film “attempts to pull down a democratically elected government.”

Yesterday, another state minister, Kadambur C Raju also threatened action if the objectionable scenes were not removed. He said he will consult the Chief Minister, Edapaddi Palaniswami about taking action.

Dialogues in general are a weakness. Victor seems to like certain things as a director that, way things are shot that I don’t. The intermission twist is unwelcome IMO but let’s see how this unfolds.

This is entertaining so far, quite funny. But reading things, the second half gets worse but let’s see. The first half was worth it. The film has nothing to say it’s just guilty pleasure cinema. It’s better than Dhoom 3 till now.

I think critics till this point have been pretty harsh.

      • So whats the verdict, overall its better or worse than D3?

        Like

        • Overall the first half is better than D3 but second half is Mela level. Overall this will do good to get to 200Cr IMO. It’s quite enjoyable in first half as the tone set by Big B (quite serious) and Aamir (humour), backstory together give you enough moments.

The second half – I have no clue what everyone is smoking. I could spoil it but I’ll let everyone who wants to watch it, watch it but I’m sure the moments before Manzoor E Khuda will drive everyone up the wall. Even the picturisation of the song is Mela like and thereafter you simply lose the film entirely as it’s become non serious and quite cheesy.

Overall at least D3 got narratively stronger, here it’s very bad script and if Aamir’s signed up to this I’m afraid he’s losing it.

Performance wise Aamir is good, more when is playing & funny – it’s true all the best dialogues are for him (think Tony mentioned that in his review). Big B is wasted here. WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED. THIS IS A BIG OWN GOAL. If they had screenings for this last month I’m sure they could have edited this better. VKA has improved but I’m not watching a film of his ever again. He gets basics wrong and if Aamir had a hand in this, his fans need to go after him as he’s lost it here. His last ‘cheesy’ films Mela/Ishq have returned to haunt him here.

        • if a film has to have a bad half it’s better for it to be the first one. If it’s the second it’s even worse because the audience leaves the theater with that impression. On the rest though yes it’s true, I didn’t expect that they wouldn’t even get to Dhoom level in the worst case scenario. Even if it were ‘just enjoyable’ it would already be a letdown but to do this with this opportunity is pretty incredible. I’m actually quite surprised Aamir okayed this. As for Aditya Chopra the less said the better.

        • the problem as always is the writing. You can’t make films with nothing scripts. I still consider Ghajini the only genuine masala effort out of Bombay in many years and not surprisingly this was a Southern director remaking his film (the Memento angle is less important here because just that wouldn’t have made for a blockbuster).

This film will be harder for Aamir to write-off because since Lagaan, successful or not, letdown or not, there has never been a reason to really doubt his judgment. No one really had a problem with MP or Talaash though they might not have loved these films or ‘enjoyed’ them. It could be that he got swayed by the basic setup here and so on but still amazed he didn’t do more with the script. I was skeptical from day 1 about the quality of the film but I must say I never expected this even in the worst case scenario. It’s simply unbelievable. I’d go further and say that this is a wasted opportunity in the historic sense.

I hardly remember Mela but I recall the title song & here Aamir is prancing around giving the same vibes (for a few minutes). Instead of his brother, he has Katrina Kaif and Fatima SS.

Ps. The English spoke Hindi better than Katrina. She’s laughable but her dancing is pretty extraordinary here. One move on her knees when she spins herself is quite unforgettable. Her Botox is off-putting.

Because no one was giving MP these reviews. I’m just surprised he went ahead with this script, and yes to the extent that his judgment means more for the audience than any other star’s, this will be a blow in that sense. But otherwise this is just a big project that went very wrong and it’s really more at Yashraj’s doorstep than anything else.

on a related note and before some SRK fans foolishly rush in to attack (as they have since the advertising started for this film) don’t make me count SRK’s misfires over the last 10-12 years. Similarly Salman (who even on a good day does Sultan) has had two total failures in the last two years (Tubelight, race 3), before this even the Barjatya was very poor. So let’s not get into silly season here. The Aamir fans are calling it like it is on the film.

I’m open for some solid business till Sunday but cracks will definitely show. Twitter won’t spare Aamir – his fanbase is way more demanding. Even in my theatre people were walking out towards end. 114. Thugs Of Hindostan (HINDI) has destroyed all box records as it collects in the 50 crore nett range on the first day. It will the first film to hit this mark if it reaches with final collections in the morning. The previous record was 39.32 crore of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo if we count outright Hindi films only and.40.73 crore nett if we include box office legend Bahubali – The Conclusion. It is also the highest single day in history as it beats the Sunday numbers of Sanju.

Thugs Of Hindustan has beaten every single circuit figure of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo that is certain while though it will be ahead of Bahubali – The Conclusion in terms of all India collections some circuits maybe a little less as the major difference between Thugs of Hindustan and Bahubali – The Conclusion is coming from the South (where Bahubali – The Conclusion had a limited release in Hindi), Delhi / UP and Bihar

Delhi / UP and Bihar are extraordinary as Delhi / UP figure may beat the Bahubali – The Conclusion figure by 2 crore nett and Bihar also may come out 50 lakh ahead. The film has run riot in these two circuits with multiplexes collecting earth shattering numbers and single screens running house full across both circuits.

The holiday factor has pushed the film and Bahubali – The Conclusion was not a holiday but still the numbers have to be done. It is easy to say 45 or 50 crore nett but to actually get is a huge achievement today. In the future even a 50 crore nett number will look small as many films do it as ticket prices get higher and higher.

The big benchmarks apart from the all India 50 crore nett day one that are on for the film are a 10 crore nett total in Delhi / UP which no one has even got close to, even 9 crore nett has not been surpassed on any day. It also could get 3 crore nett in Rajasthan and 1.50 crore nett in Bihar.

There is a possibility of the film going over 50 crore nett when the final figures come out in the morning. The range at present is a big one between 48-52 crore as 48 crore it has done for sure and 52 crore nett is a possibilty. This all depends on the where the final figures of Mumbai and Delhi / UP come out at in the morning as these two could be 5-10% higher or lower than present estimates.

    • The previous record was PRDP and this is why opening records don’t matter. Shit films can make such records as long as the timing is right, star-power is there, hype is huge etc.

Who cares about such records? I know Aamir definitely won’t because this won’t do anything for his career and will bring down his brand value a lot.

I found the trailer really average, and am not really surprised by the result. Victor has no story-telling abilities – Tashan was nothing but some style (and it’s not like it was Tarantino-level of style), D3 was a khichdi with a mishmash of Prestige, and 80s bhai-bhai drama. I don’t understand why Aamir chose to work with him again.

  115. Seeing the reviews I can conclude few things:

Aamir has a thing for sub par masala movies. Having done movies like Mela, Ishq, D3, Baazi, Mann and now ToH. For some reason such scripts appeal him. Maybe he tries too hard with Masala films and falls flat. He got Ghajini right though and also RH was fine. Ishq was also ok but he isn’t a great Masala movie maker. He should stick to his strengths henceforth. Or he should pick a goood Director for Masala movies, act and go home. Don’t get involved.

A bad WOM on first day can be counter effecitive if the movie is watchable. Helps reduce high expectations.

Finally now I know why no one was shown the movie prior to proper release. They knew the quality.

    Like

    • Nope. They know how anti amirians will be waiting in the wings to destroy the film. That is why they did not show the film before the release. In that case, the first day numbers would have been affected. Now they can relax. The first day record is set for the present.

Less said about Baaghi-2 , the better. This is thousand times better than that crap.

    Good to be here !

My name is Jay, Director with a leading IT Services company, crazy business traveller & a movie buff.

Was going through the thread ! An unbelievably comprehensive & consolidated view of information and opinions.

I watched Thugs today with family in Bangalore and here are my inputs.

    1. A sub par masala fare, as good or as bad as kick, reddy, HNY & most other masala movies.

    2. Everyone but me liked they movie, i expected a little more finesse from an Aamir / Bachan flick. This is the first time in ages that we as a family have gone to watch any movie first day. I convinced everyone to come along / booked ticket in advance etc.

    3. The twists and turns and extremely predictable and the movie simply does not soar at any level through its entire duration. Not sure how many of us went to see Dhoom3 and were frustrated that the movie never really rose above the obvious, the same director and the same outcome here. Not sure why Aamir went with this guy the second time. And to think of an opportunity to have the legendary Mr.Bachan for company, I can only say that this is an opportunity lost.

    4. Coming to business, as I checked while coming out at the box office. Most plex shows were booked through the weekend, barring the first few rows which anyways can get taken at runtime. So I see this movie doing great business over the entire weekend.

    5. Unlike what I read here on the blog, this won’t crash on Monday. In fact I am pretty sure that this will surprise everyone. 7 folks of my family had fun and love the movies. This is better than movies a like TZH, Baaghi 2, HNY etc.

    6. I am surprised at some of the reviews, infact cant fathom someone like TA give low ratings. He gives good rating to all movies stating business potential. Raja Sen I agree is consistent & he had given 5 stars to both Lagaan & Dedh Ishqiya. Both exceptionally good movie and my favs. So he can still stick to his guns.

    6. Mr. Bachan should have been given a better deal. This man is most probably not going to do many big movies from now on. Such an opportunity should not have been wasted.

I’m in consulting / sales which is as much an art as it is technical knowhow (wink).

I think we need to talk about 3 dying art forms.

        1. Political Correctness. This is pretty obvious, sad but true.

        2. Cinema as a medium of entertainment for the adult population. I was based close to a Lowe in Emeryville in the summer holiday time this year & the only times you knew that was a movie hall and not a food court was when the summer Disney movies / Jurassic world released. And those you would agree are more tuned towards a younger audience. Netflix is the obvious choice & after Disney fully takes over Hulu , the cinematic space will further shrink. Disney which is now the last Hollywood movie experience will itself put the final nail in. Shorter forms of entertainment / byte sized entertainment capsules will become the norm. Monetisation will be subscription based, movie pass is already doing that for theatres but no one still wants to go to the theatre. At home / on mobile it will work.

Now I’m certain in India the same will happen, but the platform of consumption will be mobile.

        3. Superstars : Amitabh, 3 Khan’s, Rajni, Akshay with differing clout at different stages are the last superstars. As with Hollywood, the stars would soon not matter as cinema itself will have taken a backseat. & event movies would be more kids friendly.

Hence while these superstars are still around I would absolutely love to watch all of them in movies that are well made.

That Yakuza preferred 2nd half gives the film some hope.

Critics have been OTT for sure. Those that are both critics & box office analysts will have to compromise at some stage.

Aamir’s single biggest worry should be China. Indian viewers will forgive him and he’ll bounce back but Chinese market I suspect will be quite surprised – but it’s too hard to 2nd guess that audience automatically. D3 was lukewarm their, I’d be shocked if this did half the business of Secret Superstar. I guess they have to release it now given the money given to YRF, ideally it shouldn’t go to China.

      • the problem with a film like TOH is also the expectations game. Even if it’s at TZH level the audience expects a lot more here. With Salman the audience just expects a bit more than passable.

        • That’s true. Even though YRF didn’t carpet bomb marketing, everyone would have expectations pre trailer. After K3G this was the biggest casting coup of this century.
And because it will not work, doing it again in another film makes no sense.

  130. Thugs Of Hindustan Records Insane City And Circuit Records

The collections of the first day of Thugs Of Hindostan (HINDI) are coming in and they are simply insane from multiplexes to single screens from North to South. Obviously there is going to out performance and under performance when the circuits are compared but when compared to other films the records are practically everywhere. The early figures from some circuits are as follows compared to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which is the highest opening day for an outright Hindi film.

    • This film has been mauled since the first show started on Twitter. I followed most comments out of interest. It was 90% negative and not a single review has been positive. And yet it’s still broke records (possible numbers might come in lower tomorrow). Given how pre release predictions plummeted based on ‘weaker’ than expected advance to say a maximum of 50Cr – all those distributors predicting 35Cr or 40Cr – do they even know their business models?

Capacity has to be higher than 65Cr so I agree with Marcus on that and disagree with Krish.

If a film arrives with everything aligned, a national holiday, wide release, cast, genre etc 60Cr is easily doable. And really the 50Cr for TOH is inflated by ticket prices plus post GST so comparing with PRDP is pretty stupid IMO. Better to compare to Sanju’s Sunday of 47Cr or whatever BOI had for it. Even there the potential 50Cr is only adding 6% and all that can be explained by ticket prices. The sensational number would have been 60Cr here or more but as Krish said all bets were off once Twitter watched and reviewed/panned the film.

On the whole, Thugs Of Hindostan is a major disappointment. The word of mouth for the film will be bad (despite the fact that the masses may not hate it) and, therefore, collections will drop down fast and furiously after the initial euphoria dies down and after the festive and holiday period gets over. The producers, of course, may make some profits but that’s more because they had sold the satellite and digital rights of the film at phenomenal prices, before the film’s theatrical release. Compared to the scale, canvas and budget of the film, its box-office earnings will be a dampener.

    • Even with a 50 cr opening, I doubt 300 cr is a possibility here. I guess a Gold kinda trending, 4-5x its day 1 number would be a more realistic scenario here culminating in a 200-250 cr lifetime total.

      Like

      • There is a huge spread on where this could finish. Anything between 150-300Cr is possible. I’d be open to either side right now. The first day number is very strong considering what we think WOM is. Indian audience might see this as a unique one time watch for Big B Aamir combo and then 275-300Cr is possible. Monday all will be clear.

I am curious to see how it opens tomorrow. It’s still an interesting box office story to follow as a big film flopping can still tell you what market potential is out there.

After reading the negative WoM my expectations were very low, so I quite liked it as a one time watch. For me as well 2nd half was better than the first one.

Not bad as Dhoom 3 but not good as Ghajini either, it should have been promoted more as a movie for kids.

Aamir should stop working with YRF though, he should produce his own movies and do away with working for someone else.

  135. Since the verdict on ToH is anyways out, I’ll chime in with some flogging-the-dead-horse bits as well. The problem isn’t that ToH is a stale, hackneyed film – that was kind of visible through the trailers – the real problem is that it shaped up to be worse in the end. And this is the key point – it shaped up worse despite Aamir being a part of it. To some extent, it’s not much of a surprise – Dhoom 3 was nonsensical enough to have given cause to some alarm, but we, the people, have short memories. The title was intriguing, the pairing was historic and that was assumed to be enough. We all forgot how utterly crap YRF has been over the years, and of course, what Viktor (Vijay Krishna becomes Viktor, go figure!) dished out in the name of entertainment last time around. The telltale signs were there, only we chose to ignore it. Just because of Aamir. That’s the cross he has to bear.

The masala genre itself isn’t the problem. It’s how one handles it. And certainly, with the Indian audiences getting a healthy dose of Hollywood each week, the treatment deserves a certain update as well. It has to be intelligent masala, not just masala for the masses. A Khakee or Ghajini is fine but Dhoom 3 or ToH is not. That’s not to say that Murugadoss will work every time in Bollywood – but the masala narrative needs to be plausible enough for the audiences to emotionally invest themselves. In that respect, the likes of Farah Khan or Viktor have done a serious disservice to the genre. If done right, this is the only genre which can smash box office records (Baahubali) because this is what we all have grown up with. Bollywood is synonymous with masala, but its cruder, more coarse elements have to be either tucked away or given a nice window-dressing, especially in this time and age.

Having said that, I’m not at all a fan of the Baahubali series.

  138. So far the story has been just as I expected …

    1. Trolls and srk/sallu/akki fans had a field day.

    2. Reviewers suddenly uplifted their standards (happens when the privileged ones are not pampered at press screenings and publications/stalwarts dont get their PR paychecks for writing reviews).

    3. Indian audience is reliable enough to dig any sub-par commercial film with a star-cast. (They do it all the time for other stars, why would they leave out an Aamir film?)

Where will it go from here? The trolls are now saying (and praying) for HNY/PRDP scenario, which essentially means 5X multiplier. That is 250 cr nett. IF that happens then likes of BOI will end up calling it ‘above average’ or ‘semi-hit’ (only because it has Aamir, with Sallu or SRK in it it would be classified as a Hit).

In my books anything less than 300 cr will be embarrassing. This will probably not sustain at D3 level (which would take it past 350 cr given TOH’s higher initial), but will do better than PRDP or HNY (both are actually considered as ‘hits’ by respective fans!).

Weekend may still do 150 cr in 4 days. I would wait for monday to gauge actual ground level response of this movie.

    Anyways, watching it tonight.

    • And whats happening with Aamir is kind of natural in many ways. He did his best work in his forties (usually an age frame where the best best stars like Bachchan would decay). In his fifties, he seems to be suffering from egoism and complacency. I have seen most successful men in their fifties go through this. Blinded by the success achieved in their prime (usually forties in most line of work), they become quite biased, prejudiced and complacent. Their credential cant be doubted by their ‘history’, but their decisions become ridiculous. How else do you explain this downgrade in quality after Dangal? First SS, now ToH. Lets hope better sense prevails and biopics of osho or gulshan kumar do not materialize.

      Like

      • The kind of backlash it has received will negate its box-office performance however Crores it might end up with in its final tally! Massive disappointment from Aamir as giving 2 years to such a trash is a cruel joke on the audience who trust Aamir blindly and wait for his film with bated breath!! It’s a blow on that trust as bashing seems to be universal in nature from critics to the audience which is very rare as Aamir seems to have mastered the art of balancing both or in some cases either of the one but here he is getting mauled by both!! The biggest question is what he saw in this hotchpotch storyline which has neither the novelty nor the able director to pull this off?? And that too when he is getting to act with Amitabh Bachchan in the most expensive Hindi movie is not only baffling but once in a life time opportunity missed!! Never expected such a misreading from Aamir ever!!

He needs to pull his socks up and give up on his complacency, if any!! And move as far from the Osho biopic or any biopic for that matter as possible and try to focus on his core strength which is humane aspect of storytelling than this over the top stuff. And he should also work with new breed of directors to explore new vistas and avenues as he did with John Mathew Matthan in Sarfarosh, Farhan Akhtar in DCH and Rakeysh Mehra in RDB. One could sense his sticking with Hirani but with Victor is really a bizarre decision!! Also he needs to quicken his speed by releasing at the very least one movie a year or in 18 months but a gap more than this is neither feasible nor judicious keeping his age in mind as he is going to be 54 in March next year. I have faith in him and hope this would just be a ‘blip’ in his filmography.

  142. UP Big Three All Smash Records With Thugs Of Hindustan
    Thursday 08 November 2018 04.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindustan has set insane records across UP. The film looks to have netted a huge 6.50 crore nett apprx in the state with the collections from 50 plus cinema halls in Delhi city to come which could hit 4 crore giving the circuit a crazy 10.50 crore nett first day. The three big cities of UP (proper) are simply phenomenal and as follows. The NCR part of UP is also insane as Noida and Ghaziabad shatter all records by distances with around 1.75 crore nett between them.

    Lucknow – 62,00,000 apprx

    Footfalls – 44,000 apprx

    Kanpur – 40,13,460

    Footfalls – 30,072

    Agra – 31,46,386

    Footfalls – 27,348

    TOTAL – 1,33,59,846 apprx

    Footfalls – 1,01,420

The three cities have seen a turnout of 1 lakh people on the first day alone which is HISTORY. Ek Tha Tiger and Bahubali – The Conclusion also saw a lakh turnout in these three cities but it was on the Sunday for both films.

  143. Thugs Of Hindustan has recorded earth shattering numbers in East Punjab and the circuit could hit the 5 crore nett mark which will be a first for the circuit. Bahubali – The Conclusion was 4.64 crore nett, Sultan was 4.01 crore nett, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was 3.98 crore nett, Sanju was 3.68 crore nett and Happy New Year was 3.51 crore nett. These are the top five in the circuit and Thugs of Hindustan could breach the 5 crore nett mark which is extraordinary. It has beaten all the films for sure except maybe Bahubali – The Conclusion. If the collections from the smaller centres of Haryana come in a bit less than expected than the final total could fall in the Bahubali range.

The collections from the big cities of East Punjab are as follows.

    Gurgaon – 76,16,088

    Chandigarh – 61,00,000 apprx

    Faridabad – 48,66,441

    Ludhiana – 45,67,170

    Jalandhar – 23,53,194

    Amritsar – 22,00,000 apprx

    Jammu – 16,94,683

    Patiala – 10,79,023

The figures have crossed 3 crore nett from the above eight cities only which gives the film a shot at the 5 crore nett mark. The numbers from the smaller cities will tell if 5 crore nett comes or not.

This 50 cr opening number is more disheartening than the silly reviews and trolling we saw yesterday. Bad luck Satyam! Aamir has a love for masala that makes me equate him with you in my mind, although i dont support it. 😛

Personally for me in last 5 to 7 years it is Akshay who is working on the best script. He has the variety but still Aamir fans made fun of Akki. Aamir’s fan act snooty. Now it is pay back time. So why cry ? what you sow you reap. Its simple. Some member (Even Big B’s fan) are so much into Aamir’s sucking that they are ignoring how criminally Amitabh has been sidelined in ToH. Jusk ask people they still have memory of Narayan shankar, Yashvardhan Raichand or Sexy Sam..But look at Khuda Baksh.
