Like I said, I liked and enjoyed TOH very much and the people with me too. Maybe because I don’t know and expect all the hero stories in Hindi movies and I’m not Indian. I will see the film again soon.

      • And watch out for the MB series. Aamir is all about concept films. And this Indian epic is really the best epic story out there in ages and arguably better than its international counterparts. Its a shame that we lament so much at a missed opportunity of a great masala outing, but not that interested when a guy like Aamir takes on the challenge to bring MB to life, that too in a platform like Netflix. Instead we will talk nonsense in that thread too.

Read MB if possible in the meantime …

        • I know the Ramayana (and now I understand the Indians’ love for great heroes), but MB was too big for me so far. Should Aamir confirm I will read it. But he can only make it international, as different movies like SeSu (socially relevant and content driven) and now TOH (pure entertainment) have proven. Indians in general appreciate his work too little in my opinion. He should be active exclusively in own productions and become clearly more international. There will be extremely much negativity in India against an MB of him and these forces are very strong, so I am against an MB. Imagine only the slightest incorrectness, committed by a Muslim! It is extrem explosive material and telling new stories would be less problematic (I prefer it). But internationally MB can do a lot for Indian cinema and Indian culture – but that’s another thing.

For me, Aamir’s biggest weakness is not TOH. It is his sentimentality and love for Indian cinema and his homeland. He could go anywhere with his talents and liberal mind.

      • LOL you nailed it.. This is the main problem I have with our reviewers. Over-praising or under-praising, both are not good. Folks want to play the ‘good, intelligent’ guy, by saying that smaller films need to be appreciated, blah blah. Nothing like that: I had issues with STREE, and BH. BH is good – but nothing that warrants a trip to the theater. Not every film is a JAANE BHI DO YAARO. I am really flummoxed at the hyper-praise these got and that these even made 100 crores. These are, as we used to have in olden days of Doordarshan, tele-films, that’s all.

I might have laughed for 3 minutes at the max in STREE, and people were writing as though it’s a laugh-riot. [I haven’t seen ANDHA DHUN as yet].

        I loved PATAAKHA though.

    ***********

We Are Venom. And the rest of us are worried. At least, that’s what some fans have felt concerning the success Venom has been receiving. If you haven’t been keeping up with the news, Venom is killing it in the box office. China is apparently eating this film up like candy, while Venom has also surpassed Justice League at the worldwide box office. Currently at the 670+ million range, it’s easily safe to say Spidey’s big bad is a hit.

  5. Avengers 4 trailer not coming soon.

    **************

However, Joe Russo has implied we won’t be seeing the first trailer for the next movie until the New Year.

In an Instagram Q&A, he dropped a strong hint that anyone expecting it in the next few weeks will be left disappointed.

“You may or may not see it before the calendar turns to 2019,” he teased.

In the same Q&A, Russo revealed the current running time for the as-yet-untitled epic.

It seems like fans may need to bring a cushion: as Avengers 4 could be the longest Marvel movie ever.

“The running time on Avengers 4 is currently sitting right at three hours, so we’ll see if that holds,” Russo said.

  7. Star Wars 9: The Truth Behind Lucasfilm’s “Course Correction”

    ***************

Star Wars: Episode IX is said to be a “course correction” movie for Lucasfilm, but it’s not in the way some fans might think. The galaxy far, far away experienced its fair share of ups and downs in the past year. The Last Jedi, while a critical and commercial success, proved to be extremely polarizing within the fan base. And this summer’s Solo: A Star Wars Story infamously became the franchise’s first box office failure, throwing Lucasfilm’s future plans into a state of flux. In the wake of Solo underperforming, anthologies about other classic characters (like Boba Fett) are on hold as the studio focuses on other projects.

Through all of this, Episode IX remains on course for its December 2019 premiere, beginning production back in August under the direction of J.J. Abrams. With the Force Awakens helmsman returning to finish what he started, many are curious to see how he’ll conclude the story – especially after The Last Jedi threw numerous curve balls at the audience. Reports indicating Episode IX is seen as a course correction for the property conjure up images of Return of the Jedi 2.0 – a safe, fan-service film designed to be a crowdpleaser. However, a close analysis of the situation reveals something else.

I mentioned previously about my 12yr old niece crying after the last scene before interval, when BigB goes on his suicide mission. It reminded me of all the stories I had heard of kids crying when Jai dies in Sholay. Further, she was thrilled when he re-appears all shackled, and she was even tapping away to the beats of Manzoor-e-Khuda after that.
IMO, the emotional connect, especially with young girls, was established in the first few minutes of the movie, with Khudabaksh saving a young Zafira from getting killed by Clive.
All throughout the show, the biggest laughter could be heard from kids, who found all the Aamir tomfoolery funnier than the reaction to the same from most adult folks.

Looks like those who appreciated the movie, be it kids, or select BigB fans, are too few to make any noticeable difference to the BO of this fast sinking ship.

  9. China’s like a newborn baby. You don’t feed it spicy chicken curry! It needs what it needs which till date is selective bias of Indian cinema! Throwing it the most humiliating moment of Aamir’s career is like giving the baby a scissors to play with. It might be fun to watch for a moment as the baby might cut its hair or some papers but it might poke itself in the eye and cause permanent damage!

This is not some kind of casino where China is a side bet or hedge bet for Aamir. D3 didn’t work, nor Bahubali. Aamir’s stardom isn’t taking this to safety in India. Most evidence points to more bad news. Secret Superstar worked because it followed the Dangal arc.

    #boycotttohreleaseinchina

Aside hypothetically I would love to see it release in China just to identify what kind of stardom Aamir has there. But that’s just an academic exercise like when I give my toddler scissors or knives under strict supervision to see what things he would do to make me laugh! 😀

Here the added value comes with much greater risk. And I’m thinking more about the entire Indian films here than just 1 Aamir film. You can still gauge what Chinese think about it today. I’m sure their equivalents of IMDb would have ratings as the film would have been pirated already.

They can smartly edit it to greatly accentuate the colonial-hatred, the revenge-by-Zafira (ie the Dangal girl) angle, remove the excessive Firangi philandering, especially remove the un-necessary flirting with his Dangal screen-daughter, edit out Vashmalle, perhaps even shorten Suraiya, etc.

Till 7 PM (1st day) the footfalls are 8577 but the overall footfalls for the day are shown to be 13741.

Between 7 PM and the end of the day, 5164 tickets were sold — in 6 multiplexes. That’s close to a 100% occupancy for a wildly derided film. Does that even make sense? On the 2nd day, between 7PM and EOD it’s 5800 tickets sold!

The second day occupancy for Race 3 in Noida is higher than ToH’s first day!

Did all the muslims congregate in Noida to celebrate Eid by watching Bhai’s magnum opus?

And then it gets funnier. On Sunday the footfalls for Noida are lower by 8% but the All India total is higher by 1 Crore.

I call this complete BS. It’s just a bunch of fans supporting their own agenda.

          • Noida is one centre. Taran Adarsh had at least 20 every week. This type of stuff is even worse than 10 years ago. AI, data tools have taken over manufacturing industries and Indians are at the epicenter of data yet they can’t get basic theatrical business done.

Krish – thanks for the shout out. It has reminded me of yesteryear. But I think there is something deeply corrupted at the centre of this industry. While the world moves on, this industry goes back a few decades. It can only mean the people that matter want it this way. You’ve got scores of what I call pocket mining going on. Offshoot data centres when before you had Taran Adarsh giving out all data. People have created an industry out of this with little aim for accuracy or transparency, just to feed agendas. I was very sad when Taran Adarsh gave up giving out numbers. I enjoyed doing box office columns out of a box from a foreign country! That last sentence says a lot – that anyone can set this up and it’s very easy to rip apart as Saket has just done. Even my stuff was easy to blow potholes into but my aim was for transparency, accuracy was accounted via a range. Nothing more. Plus I have an opposing outlook on how a film is judged. For example if TOH found a way to 200Cr it would be breakeven potentially but I’d call it a flop. I’ve gone through trending many times so not again.

I can’t find any of my columns online anymore, what a shame.

Occupancy and selective multiplex screens is just very basic data. That you are accurate on this is good going. Defining accurate is the key though.

And whatever I was doing was very simple and easy.

          • Jay – BO in india is screwed up bigtime. Data is closely guarded to make any detailed analysis impossible. Everyone uses the lack of transparency for their own gains. For toh, i think yrf may have over-reported day one by around 2-3 cr to touch 50 cr mark for media publicity. At the same time the daywise fall is also being over-reported to somehow account for the negativity, part of which may be a paid propaganda campaign from rival camps. The extent of nonsense is quite alarming. Specially when u compare all this with china’s bo tracking mechanisms.

            Like

          • This implies both Taran and BOI stopped using YRF figures from day 2 onwards and are corroborating with others? That sounds very farfetched to me.

            For me;
Day 1 – YRF, BOI and Taran all had same numbers. BOI used producers (for whatever copout reason, Taran always does)
Day 1 overnight and day 2. Trade uproar that numbers are fake. YRF asked to correct
Day 2 onwards – occupancy data won’t corroborate with official collections as official collections are being deflated to compensate and correct Day 1 inflated numbers. So these bollytricky, addatoday are useless as there occupancy %’s will predict a higher number but YRF are handcuffed to correct there inflated Day 1.

            Liked by 1 person

          • I’ve written before how during Kaabil/Raees clash that both cheated.

But also Hrithik Roshan films are being reduced *more* by BOI. Addatoday, Bollywoodarena & indicine at the time all had there own set of trade data that suggested this. They suggested that Filmkraft overreported but their own collections were still tracking above BOI which suggested that their own numbers were ‘middleground’ the average of the deflated BOI one and inflated Filmkraft one.

Further I’ve always said Hrithik, Akshay’s, Devgnn’s films are underreported by BOI compared to producer totals. The ‘margin’ that Master & Krish claim exists say 5% is much more wider for these actors than Salman, Aamir & SRK.

Anyone just look at producer (Taran’s tweets) Vs BOI for quick and dirty comparison. I’m talking say last 5 years or more. Maybe recently it’s been better. That I’m not vocal all the time is because I will bore the living daylights out of the blog with all my observations. And the Kaabil one was very official by those sites – they ran with their own numbers on that basis. As it was ‘moral’. For me moral is stick to your own numbers always or just go with producer. This cherry picking BOI did this time and smaller satellite sites do – I ask why? Are they paid to use producer numbers? Or do they not even trust their own data? It’s a freaking mess.

          • All the figures used are given by yrf..taran has no other source in any case..the same number you will find in every source..whether inflated or not the numbers are from.yrf..they havent stopped sending the numbers.. the numbers are sent by SMS around noon to every trade outlet and analyst…that’s why the number quoted by everyone right from.girish to taran to addatoday and indicine earlier used to match to.last decimal..this is pretty standard trade practice..and yrf send numbers for.every movie of theirs whether it does.well.or.not….the numbers will stop coming once they trickle Down..

            Like

          • My last comment on numbers..Jay this is in response to your day1 day 2 post..why do you think yrf deflated their numbers on day 2 to autocorrect..there is nothing to support this argument..addatoday day 2 number estimate was 28 to 29..bollytrick was 26..every trade analyst and the distributors data was varying from 22 to 27.. yrf went with 28..similar thing happened on day 3…when we can go with bollytrick or addatoday footfall or occupancy data to float a theory of deflation one must also see the final estimate they arrive at..all 4 days final estimate of sources have been consistently lesser than yrf actual.. so I dont buy this deflation at all..yrf are sending numbers even for telugu and Tamil versions daily…again I dont think yrf has inflated day 2 day 3 day 4 purely bcos I arrived at those numbers myself even before boi gave their estimates..it wasn’t too hard to get that..yes the margin of error will be there..day 1 number could be inflated but that doesnt mean they have deflated later

          • Besides it’s a theory and I haven’t checked the occupancies. I was only saying to Saket and Marcus that if occupancies are more stable than producer numbers are suggesting it could be because of corrections. You are countering this by saying occupancies actually validate the producer numbers from day 2.

You are saying the opposite to Saket/Marcus. I’m blindly just theorising what ‘could’ be happening to Saket/Marcus.

Have said this before, AK has enough acumen & resources to make films on his own as per his vision or work with better film makers than the likes of Viktor & Aditya Chopra.

Myselfaamir has said it best, some of this is aamir fans own doing. you can’t keep throwing sh!t all over at everyone else and not expect it to comeback to you at some point.

As far as trolling is concerned, once again, i challange everyone here to go to any thread and see who does most of the trolling/spamming. Stop pretending like aamir fans are holy, honest, noble, etc… they’re in fact usually just the opposite. (at least most of them, well a lot on this site are not even aamir fans. they’re just hiding behind aamir and using aamir success to degrade other stars)

  19. So the very few big budget Bollywood hits this year – Sanju, Baaghi 2 and Padmaavat – have been lead by the new generation of actors while the real super hits have been small films like Raazi, Badhai Ho, Andhadhun and Stree. Similarly, the new audience in China also seems to prefer strong human interest stories like Dangal, Hitchki and Secret Superstar. Interesting times ahead for Bollywood and I’m glad to see the tide tilting in the favour of well made cinema instead of big name-backed rubbish.

I hope the tacky, gimmicky looking Zero also tanks so that the A-listers are finally forced to concentrate on scripts and good direction and not just rely on casting the increasingly haggard Khans as romantic heroes opposite glamorous, gorgeous actresses.

The advent of streaming services is a big game changer for the Indian multiplex audience that Bollywood increasingly relies on. Earlier, I would go to the cinema to see Indian films more frequently since quality content was so hard to find in India and the theatres rarely screen good films from other countries (even with Hollywood, only the blandest blockbusters come to our multiplexes). But now, we have turned one room at home into a small screening room of sorts and prefer to watch films, documentaries and TV shows from around the world on Netflix and Amazon Prime without heading to the theatre for sub-par big budget Bollywood films.

    • Having said, there will always a thirst for films that showcase relatable experiences and aspirational dreams that are culturally unique to us. That’s why South Indian films seem to be far more profitable these days. Many of the recent hits like Sarkar and NOTA, for instance, tap into the deep-seated angst of the Tamil Nadu population about the political paralysis and hopelessness that has set in after Jayalalithaa’s death.

I feel that even if Bollywood has moved away from mass-oriented content it can still greatly increase its appeal by making cinema that caters to the rapidly growing millennial and middle class audiences.

For instance, Veere Di Wedding could have been a much bigger breakout hit amongst women (akin to Bridesmaids in the USA) if it had been about a group of more relatable upper-middle class girlfriends and if it had satirised patriarchal Indian middle class morality/ hypocrisy instead of being a film about four obscenely rich women who live obnoxiously spoilt lives and move in a very rarefied social circle that is free of the taboos that stifle most young Indian women. So many of my female friends really want to see films with contemporary, millennial Indian heroines who are more relatable, flawed and real than the Suriayyas or Simrans of Bollywood but Veere simply didn’t provide that.

    • I’m a naysayer on this. I think this is the way things work nowadays. News travels in an instant. The Twitter feed for TOH was negative from the first show. I don’t rule out ‘some’ insincere views. But the critics of India even if they rated this with 4 stars – I doubt it would help too much. If anything it might piss off the audience more. 2/5 is about fair IMHO. The Twitter stuff or WhatsApp stuff is more likely to change opinions. AnJo’s explained that so well. It’s easy to abuse a film behind a phone or laptop. But your credibility is on the line in person.

I haven’t recommended this film to anyone. My only request was to Satyam to watch it AFTER AnJo, Rocky and NyKavi reviews. Because if this film has deeper meaning for a generation of Bachchan fans I don’t want to be the one that said it’s not worth it.

Just yesterday my sister said reviews from India are that TOH is rubbish. She said what do they know it’s an Aamir film. This is Aamir’s status IMO, expectations are very high. She’ll not like the film I’m sure.

Him writing that Twitter letter before release is a good sign. Felt like he knew this would flop so that is good that he can still determine this. And it felt like he was thanking VKA and Aditya for last time knowing deep down he’s not going down this road again with them – a definite IMO.

  29. Here it is; a classic example of how it’s different strokes for different folks – and also to think about what this could mean with a release in China…

    —–
If Thugs is diverting, it’s largely because writer-director Vijay Krishna Acharya is far more interested in the pirate life than those Disney knockabouts. We get tactical sea battles, plenty of cove action, swordfights choreographed like dance numbers, even a fiery 19th-century South Asian equivalent of a Norse burial. This is a film with money to burn, and it unabashedly torches each rupee before your eyes. Granted, it gets less irreverent as it goes on, and in terms of historical accuracy, it can be placed alongside those bank holiday staples Titanic and Muppet Treasure Island. Yet it has that rare and unmistakable look of an event movie that was huge fun to assemble. Whether you’re watching in Hindi, Tamil or Telugu – or reliant on English subtitles – much of that enjoyment does translate.

    • And this is VARIETY…

Evidencing a formidable vitality that belies his age, 76-year-old Amitabh Bachchan (with, no doubt, some assistance from stunt doubles) cuts a bold yet dignified swath through the proceedings, providing just enough gravitas and moral authority to help anchor “Thugs of Hindostan” in something resembling seriousness whenever it threatens to spin entirely out of control.

Acharya pushes it up to 11 throughout extended clashes on land and sea, in burning buildings and royal palaces. (Yes, it’s worth the ticket mark-up to see all the action on an IMAX screen.) Rest assured, he sporadically falls back on the visual cliché of slo-mo photography as embellishment for mano-a-mano clashes and army-versus-army smackdowns. But “Thugs of Hindostan” seldom slows down for very long. Although it clocks in 164 minutes, it feels much brisker than that. Much brisker, really, than some of the movies that inspired Acharya before he set sail with this one.

  31. Thugs Of Hindostan has taken a huge hit on Monday with collections of 5-5.25 crore nett.

The writing was on the wall with what happened on Saturday and Sunday with a clash being inevitable and that is what has happened.

This takes the business of the film to around 122.50 crore nett in five days and the first week will be looking at a total of 135 crore nett. The downfall is all over as even UP and Gujarat fall heavily on Monday despite the latter being on the last day of its Diwali holiday.

The film will continue to suffer over the next few days and also in the second week when business could be next to nothing and it could stay below the 150 crore nett mark which actually should have been covered in the extended weekend even if the film was just decent. Its a huge setback to the industry as its the big ones that have to score big to have a big year.

  32. Finally.. I’m done for now. To be honest, I knew that TOH was gonna flop right after Thu morning show (which is Wed night in US) but I didn’t care to post. Then there was 1st day and all negativity on social media. I saw the reviews and memes and everything still ignored. Then Thursday night I saw some reviews on SS and then reading them. Then got up Friday morning and all the discussion about collection manipulation and how some Aamir fans making fun of others saying they don’t understand boxoffice or anything about WOM and so on. Then I started posting on the forum on my Friday late morning/noon.

So, its basically 2 days completed in India and all the WOM was out and it was gone case but how some people were behaving on here, it was stupid and silly. So, when I started posting that’s being referred as trolling and what others were doing before that is not? Lol. If I had to troll and burn Aamir fans for the film’s flopping I would have started posting the negative reviews and memes from Wed night itself. Isn’t it? Even later what I posted are about the collection but not directly reviews (except Rangan’s).

Also, I don’t think people realize that all the comments would have not crossed so much if everyone accepted that its misfire. But they kept debating so much and others responding the comments grew. If there was no resistance, it would have done in a day and I don’t think I would have even posted on here. So, once all the claims are proven wrong as there was no stable collections and it turned out to be huge disaster, then next target is to blame Srk/Salman fans. I think without blaming anyone you can’t accept the defeat.

Either ways, this topic is done. See you guys soon; maybe during 2.0 or Zero or maybe not! 🙂

    Day 1 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 1360.39

    Day 2 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 1650.69 (21.33% increase from Day 1)

    Day 3 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 1609.82 (18.33% increase from Day 1)

Numbers quoted by Producers & BOI:

    28 Crore (Day 1)

    37 Crore (Day 2; 32% increase)

    38 Crore (Day 3; 35.7% increase)

      • Unless you know the exact # of shows and the exact # of tickets sold and the price for each one of those tickets, you’ll never get a good total.

Badhai Ho can be 100% occupancy but if the # of shows is just 500 and TOH can be 50% but if the number of shows is 5,000; TOH will have more collection eventhou it’s at 50%.

Badhai Ho and TOH can both have 500 shows and both be at 100%, but based on the ticket price, one can be higher than the other.

And so on, there are so many variables.

Unless your Excel has # of tickets sold and a price sold at, you can’t come to any type of conclusion.

So yes with all the information you said you need it’s very easy. But it’s clearly not available.
This is really the next best option.
That Sunday is sliding in each major city and prices are static, late night Sunday shows relative to Saturday will be less – most of this suggests Sunday can’t be higher than Saturday.

        • I have the exact number of shows and the % occupancy, which amounts to # of tickets sold. This data is quite comprehensive.

I have also used data only from the big Metros where the price differential is going to be minimal, if any. This is not a bad assumption to make.

I don’t mind adding another column for the ticket price as well, provided I know what the average ticket rates in all the major metros are. If someone can provide me with that data, I’ll be more than happy.

It was up slightly from 75 to 77.5 in afternoon shows and went down from 79 to 78 in morning shows.

And this is his strongest centre. All the others went down much more from Saturday to Sunday. Delhi went from 56 to 43; Bombay from 58.5 to 42 during night shows.

          • Yes. For Sunday to be above Saturday what increase in price is needed?

You have a 2% approximate decrease in FF from sat to sun and 3% increase in collections – this can only come from a price increase right. Which is simply unlikely.

            Like

          • 8.4% increase from Saturday’s ticket prices.

          • So basically in the context of your model, Race 3 Sunday is only legitimate if it’s ticket prices go to near TOH level over a one day swing. Yay that’s never going to happen.

The gap can only be mass centres where Salman is big. With declining WOM, declining FF’s in multiplexes, little to no chance of increase in ticket prices over one day – the only factor that changes the result is the mass centres.

            Like

          • Yes but the mass centers also have lower ticket prices — a factor of 2x or 3x lower.

It would require a very significant upswing to change Sunday’s collections.

There is data for Tier 1/2 cities as well. I will crunch those numbers tomorrow.

You have to blame Aamir for doing a crap of a movie and dumping it on audience. I commented when Salman and Sharukh were in gutter when they did crappy movies. Aamir fans must accept the reality and move on. I can only pity your state of mind and wish for your speedy recovery.

They showed the Zero trailer before the movie, and it received a very positive response – cheers and whistles from the small audience, and the right reactions at the right scenes

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Went with a group of 5, and we all had seen the terrible reviews it had gotten, so maybe our expectations were lower. But after watching it, we all agreed that it didn’t deserve such a beating. I can totally understand bad reviews, but these reviews seem cruel.

The story was decent – pretty basic stuff. The twists were good but then became pretty predictable. The British villains did a good job, however there was some unintentional comedy because they spoke to each other in Hindi! It made no sense. It wasn’t consistent either. Big B was as always such a screen presences, and Aamir did a fun job. Really enjoyed the scenes between the two of them, however it would have been more enjoyable if Aamir had done this in the early 2000’s like SRK did (from an age perspective). He was extremely entertaining. But he was like a 75% anti-hero, who wasn’t redeemed until into the second half. Perhaps this is a reason people didn’t like the movie. Also, he had a couple of borderline creepy scenes with Fatima, where he’s trying to flirt with her. Not needed!

Also, the film had NOTHING to do with thugs at all. There are some thugs shown in the first 15 minutes and I thought that was a very interesting build up, but then that ended fast. Also, the Patriotism scenes didn’t come early enough – not until the second half, so when it does, it doesn’t have the same impact. None of the characters are fully developed besides Aamir’s. There were some Baahubali influences for sure, such as the forest scenes and really Bachchan’s character. He was essentially a Kattapa like figure. The problem here is though that it isn’t shown/explained why Big B is so attached to Fatima’s character. Imagine a whole movie on Kattapa protecting Baahubali’s son, without ever showing the relationship between Kattapa and Father Baahubali.

The female characters are CRIMINALLY underdeveloped. It was almost insulting at how little screen time Katrina had. I actually counted – she had 18 minutes, 40 seconds of screen time. 1 scene leading up to a song in the first half, and in the second – another scene leading up to a song plus a final scene. Fatima and Big B don’t really get any dialogues until the after the first hour. Fatima also did poorly in her dialogue scenes.

Songs were 2/3. Surraiya was good but Aamir was sort of a disaster in it. Vashmalle was amazing. The third song was not memorable. People in the audience were laughing at Katrina wearing shorts. Action was surprisingly really good! Lots of hand to hand /weapon fight scenes, and they were well executed. VFX was also very nice on the big screen. There were only 2-3 scenes where the VFX looked poor. The ships really looked amazing, I was a fan. But honestly, there was too much action. They could have cut an action set piece and had some emotional scenes instead.

VAK has improved since Dhoom 3 for sure. This was way better. It could have been 30 min shorter, or they could have spent those 30 minutes developing the characters more. You really don’t feel anything for the characters…none of them.

The movie ends with a hint at a sequel. Obviously there won’t be one, but the one line summary they give of the potential sequel is better than the entire scene. Now THAT should have been the plot of this movie! SPOILER- Aamir and co are on their way to Britain to loot the British! I would love to see that.

      • I think the criticism here is easy. This is obvious in a very obvious way but there is hardly much background here in terms of build up. I will use a film I hate to describe this. In K3G, SRK and Jaya share a warm embrace song at the beginning. There on there are many simple scenes like Shava Shava, SRK leaving home, scenes where SRK has his mother’s picture. Everything is build around this trope so that the moment they meet in the mall the scene either hits you (or like a small select few like me it makes you cringe) but the point is the storyline arc is developed so much that the moment will provide the audience with a reunion moment of emotional investment.

TOH kind of does this very flimsy like where Bachchan just dies and suddenly returns. It’s meant to obviously be a surprise but the emotional punch is very weak. This is a stepfather daughter revenge saga without a huge development on their own arc!

Thugs of Hindostan gets a minimum guarantee of Rs. 110 cr. for the Chinese market!

Aamir Khan is a big name when it comes to the audience across the border in China. An example of his stardom there is the fact that each of his releases be it 3 Idiots, PK, Dangal, and Secret Superstar that have gone on to establish benchmarks at the China box office. This being said, Aamir Khan seems to have developed a connect with the audience in China, who in turn have taken an ardent liking to the actor’s cinematic outing. Now, keeping this in mind it comes as no surprise that the makers of Thugs of Hindostan would eventually look at releasing the period epic in the country. However, we hear that Yash Raj Films have decided to go a step further and ensure a wide if not wider than the domestic release of the film in China. But the interesting part is the fact that the film, even before it hits screens in China has earned its makers a whopping Rs. 110 cr. there.

For those still wondering how Thugs of Hindostan will feature at the China box office, one need not look further than Aamir Khan’s earlier releases in this territory. For instance, the actor’s previous releases include Dangal that raked in a staggering USD 196.89 million [Rs. 1437.30 cr], while his other release Secret Superstar that saw its domestic collections stagnate at Rs. 63.40 cr; drew in a massive USD 118.24 million [Rs. 863.15 cr] in China and PK that collected USD 116.60 million [Rs. 851.18 cr]. Besides these films there is also Aamir’s other release 3 Idiots that incidentally played a crucial role in opening up the Chinese market for Bollywood films, especially since it was the first Indian film to hit screens in China.

  41. SRK on Thugs!!
    **********************
It’s been a unique year at the movies with seemingly small films like Stree and Badhaai Ho hitting Rs 100 crore and a star project like Thugs of Hindostan struggling to stay afloat. Do you always have a box-office target in mind with every film of yours?

Shah Rukh: Not in hundreds, but in thousands! (Laughs) Main dhai sau, teen sau crore mein believe nahi karta… ab toh seedha thousand crore!

Jokes apart, I would like to say something. It’s a little personal and I don’t know whether it’s right to say it or not. This is something that’s saddened me and so I want to share it. When it happened to me personally, I wasn’t so sad, but this time I am. There are people who have given excellence to cinema for years. A film can be good, a film can be bad; none of us can ever claim ki maine duniya ki sabsi achchi film banayi hain. Mr Bachchan and Aamir have been people who have constantly contributed to the excellence of cinema. The greatest contribution to Hindi cinema in the last 10 years has been from Aamir, and with Amitji, it’s been even longer. Now if a film of theirs (Thugs of Hindostan) doesn’t reach the level that you expected it to, does it take away from what they have done for cinema?

I think some people have been a little too harsh. It’s heartbreaking. It doesn’t mean that their spirit is broken, they are all amazing artistes who will bounce back. But one needs to be a little less harsh. I think Stree was fabulous and we need to make 20,000 films like that. But I also think that Thugs of Hindostan is fantastic. Sometimes we do go wrong, but Aamir has never done a film in which he hasn’t put in his best… I’ve known him for 20 years. And if there’s anyone who can put in even more effort than Aamir — which Aamir will also agree — it’s Amitji… and at this age! So they’ve come in with good hearts and great talent and tried to make a film which tries to open up a new genre.

I may be speaking out of turn, but just like we have embraced Stree, we need to give some leeway to films like Thugs… that attempt something different. An adventure film has not been made in India in decades… probably Parasmani (1963) in black and white was the last one. Thugs… has tried to introduce this genre and kabhi kabhi upar neeche ho sakta hai. But the fact remains that in our cinema, we haven’t made an Indiana Jones and screw the comparison yaar, humne Pirates of the Caribbean bhi nahin banayi. So props to them for the attempt.

I have faced this with Ra.One… woh galat bann gaya, but at least mera effort tha to introduce superheroes into our cinema. Effort can’t be derided like this. If it was my film, it would seem like I was taking it personally, but yes, I am taking this personally.

I let people down with Jab Harry Met Sejal, which was an utter flop. But I didn’t want to let anyone down; I just liked the fact that koi story nahin thi, sirf ek ring ke chakkar mein the two people (SRK’s Harry and Anushka Sharma’s Sejal) kheechey chale jaate hain… it was very organic, slice-of-life thi. The other day I met a director who mentioned the term ‘slice-of-life’ and I said, ‘nahin, poora pumpkin do mujhe iss baar’ (laughs).

What I am saying is that we need to give everything a chance. If Zero works, it will give people encouragement to make films that are even bigger in scale and story. And if we keep doing it, then maybe one day we will be able to make a good Mahabharat too. Nahin toh sirf bahaar waale hi hamari stories banate rahenge. Aur hum dekh ke sochte rahenge ki humne Gandhi kyun nahin banayi?

    • Good one! This is exactly my feeling. I was planning on writing the same things but couldn’t find the time. He literally snatched the words out of my mouth..my key-board I guess. The way the reviews were being written, the way a 76 year old actor’s iconic show is being used to create memes, the way the 2 actors are being made fun of, it is heart-breaking, and he’s used the right word.

People can say it’s a bad movie, the worst, whatever, and move on: Repeatedly saying the same thing again again, going through a loop, it’s a pretty insensitive public out there. People who haven’t watched the film saying it’s the worst. Gloating. I don’t know.

In general, social media brings out the WORST in a person. Pathetic. What to expect? The founder of the most popular social media tool himself had the ‘vision’ of creating the tool not for any greater good or advancement of society, but just to join a club in the University so that he could sound cool and get a chance to get laid!!

I don’t know whether SRK is genuine here because his past history when he comes out with such statements have not been entirely honest. Is he feeling the heat now what with him being the last Khan on to be measured this year? Only he knows.

I hope he is sincere here…

Look at #metoo, it’s practically dead now. Because people chose Twitter instead of national daily newspaper or better still lawyers. I take Twitter as seriously as finding a life partner on Tinder! 😀 But then trollers find ways to make things happen at marginal levels.

Whether SRK is genuine or not…the word heartbreaking is very apt here. I’m not so emotionally invested in stars as it may seem but this is one instance where the general sentiment has been very unfair and unfortunate.

I hope China provides a better response rather than a bitter one.

  43. The bigger fraud, it turns out, for RACE 3 was committed over the weekdays.

    Day 4 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 614.62

    Day 5 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 472.43

    Day 6 Total (%occupancy X #of Shows) = 378.44

If we assume the first day figure of 28.5 Crores is correct and we compare these numbers to the 1st day, we get

    Day 4 Total = (614.62/1360.39) X 28.5 = 12.9 Crores (Producer Total = 14.24 Crores)

    Day 5 Total = (472.43/1360.39) X 28.5 = 9.9 Crores (Producer Total = 10 Crores)

    Day 6 Total = (378.44/1360.39) X 28.5 = 7.93 Crores (Producer Total = 7.5 Crores)

Aren’t ticket prices down on weekdays by 20%? If that is the case, Days 4-6 will be: 10.3, 7.9 & 6.3 Crores respectively!

There’s no way RACE 3 did more than 140 Crores at the Box Office. The numbers simply don’t add up.

        • That’s good work saket..I dont mean to nitpick but will mention couple of things..
the producer total for race 3 is around 175cr..addatoday has it at 173cr..not sure why BH is carrying BOI numbers..

secondly you can reduce 10 to 15 percent for ticket prices..but it is also possible that being a Salman movie the occupancies in smaller centre are higher than the centers you have used as the eid festivities affect smaller centre of up etc for 3 to 5 days.
.the boi number for day 4 to 6 is 14, 9.5 and 8…yours is 12.9, 9.9, 7.93 before price correction and would be 11.7, 9 and 7.25 after percent ticket cost reduction of 10 percent…its not too far off from boi to reduce the final total to reduce 35cr from 175cr and arrive at 140cr.
.I assume day 1 and day 2 collections seem ok..day 3 inflated by 3cr, day 4 to day 6 inflated by another 5 cr at max..week 2 of race 3 anyways added only 24cr and week 3 sanju released and movie added another 1cr..the producer number of 173 to 175cr is no doubt inflated maybe by around 10 to 15cr max…boi number is around 8 to 9 cr less than producer..I can live with tha level of dishonesty….i will move to eventually a better site to follow if there is anyone out there other than BOI..till then…

          • China is nothing more than a bonus. Obviously India matters most. It’s been annihilated there and rest of world is awful. But no one could have predicted this. Even Bobby Sidhu is off by some 40Cr. The level of damage here can in part be explained by a rather extreme reaction. There is simply no way the film is this bad.

It’s a 2/5 film and this should be doing 200Cr IMO but the audience have spoken loud and clear. Nothing will be spared not even a YRF Bachchan Aamir combo.

Anything AnJo or Saket are saying with an alternative motive here is being perpetuated further. I’m not suggesting a hate mob but just social media has had some impact here. Realistically everyone’s predictions from Day 1 have been downed dramatically. From 400, 300 to reasonable ones in 200 mark are squashed below Bobby Sidhu to around 140Cr.

  46. Now what is this I’m reading. Instead of accepting the historic clash and disaster result of TOH the numbers of other films are being questioned. We all know Krishh3, HNY, Race 3 and Padman etc were inflated as are all films but TOH didn’t even do 50 on its first day and its probably not even hit 100 in the first 3 days.

TOH is an even bigger disaster than Bombay Velvet.

Caught #TOH today. It is one time watchable. I don’t know what is the fuzz about people spreading so much negativity and foul mouthing the movie. Yes it is an opportunity lost to be ATBB but it’s genuinely not that bad as it had been said about.
The premise was good, a lot could have been done but nevertheless it was entertaining(could have edited the movie at least by 15 mins).
Aamir acted well and his character was fully developed and looked lively on screen. Problem was with other characters roles which were not fully developed that includes Ab sr’s too. AB sr looked majestic in screen. What an aura he has and carries. Wow. All scenes between him and Aamir together were gems and paisa vasool. Yes fatima was a miscast here. Her face looked bloated and dialogue delivery was below par. Plot twists were predictable but in line of masala movies. Though found amusing that same English men were there in fort for another 11 years, they never moved anywhere, never got army support from other British rule places. Also not a single scene of people helplessness or slavery from the atrocities of british men. They were living the 11 years just like that and woke up only in the last scenes. And the most ridiculous part was Britishers celebrating dusshera!!!. I mean why?. They could have chosen some other event to justify their involvement in the celebration with cities people.
1st half is good (found little unconvincing that firangi got too close to azaad too early),
2nd half is ok (apart from scenes from azaad left over gang taking shelter at suriayya’s place till revealing of Azaad was bad).
Found vfx ok, dint find it hampering the overall feel or look of the movie.
Last lines… Movie does not deserve so much of hatred and ridiculing. I mean it is not that bad as being projected. There are many bad movies compare to it which has churned money. But yes it is strictly one time watchable movie. It is a giant opportunity lost because of bad direction.
Highlight : All scenes between Ab sr & Aamir.

    • Its still gonna mint 140cr at the box office. Thats around 60cr more than it deserves.

    • Amit, the issue is what your last line is “Ratings:2.5/5”

2.5 would be okay for other actors but for aamir film, people expect more. And then on top of it audience have to pay lot more to see it, they will be pi$$ed if expectations are not met.

And when film does bad all over the world, then we have to accept that it’s a bad film.

Only saving grace for TOH is that there was no competition, let’s say something like Padmaavat had released along with it, TOH would have wrapped up in 125 crore at the most.

[I did not see Thugs because of things that I heard from friends and elsewhere. Consider it my ‘protest vote’. Mostly against Yashraj. I’ve heard great things about you here though and I might possibly check it out for this reason. But overall I am so upset at this opportunity being wasted (even if I was never expecting the sky from Yashraj) that it’s difficult for me to show up for this. It’s one thing to make a different or alternative or risky film and then face such a response. In those cases I usually blame the audience. But in a very mainstream commercial enterprise there’s simply no excuse for not getting the script right. And it doesn’t take very much. I even had bookings for Sat but I went so far as to cancel them. I’m not otherwise persuaded by audience reactions if I truly believe in the film. And some friends I heard from are let’s say a lot more tolerant than myself when it comes to absorbing ‘Bollywood’ (which is to say the contemporary Hindi industry). Judging from the overall response though I might not be the only ‘angry’ person in this sense. Even accepting the obvious there is something a bit puzzling about the intensity of the response. In a way I am now more intrigued than I might have been initially!]

I will write a detailed note on the film later, but either i saw a very different film than the others or i have completely lost it. I cant believe this is the film that everyone is bashing left right and center. i find it even more unbelievable that Brangan, who was perhaps the only reviewer to champion masala movies like Apne or Veer or the work that went into Drona or hell even Joker – and rightfully so- would dismiss this film with such disdain. As just one among the 7 people who liked Tashan and one among a million who disdained Dhoom3, i would say i found TOH to be a very enjoyable and entertaining masala film that pays tribute to the legacy of masala cinema , its greatest star Amitabh Bachchan and its most successful modern exponent Aamir Khan. This is no way a lazy cash grab like Race3 where Aamir dialed it in, there is a lot of his convictions a lot of thought go into this film that is mounted on such a lavish scale.. The film has its flaws, no question about it, could this have been better ?, Absolutely!. there are issues in terms of tone, casting, staging etc. but this is no way an embarrassment for Amitabh or Aamir and i am glad that they chose to come together for this one. As a fan of masala films, Of Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan , i dont regret watching this at all

Through trailers. Songs. I predicted a flop before the release based on my own instinct as audience. It has nothing to do with Aamir or Bachchan, both of whom I am fan of (bachchan yes. aamir not at that same level). The british in the movie as villain just created the pepto bismal moment for me and deal breaker for me. If only YRF had run the script by me, I would have asked them to make worthy villains, change story or time period to have something else as the villain. The film is only as good as its villains. The other points that are not as major: I didn’t like bachchan doing sword fights-dance and such in the sneak peak. Somehow it didn’t go with his physicality and age. I wanted to hide under the table. His voice was amazing but rest was like grandpaa doing sword fight or dancing. He should play aging don like Marlon Brando in Godfather or Pankaj Kapoor in Maqbool…A sarkar done under able hands of director like Neeraj Pandey or someone skillful. Somehow he is not able to pull it off like Rajnikant who is in similar age category. Katrina looked too lame–been there, done that, type dance moves, trying so hard. Aamir looked thakela and his bowing down to british, bowing down to Bahchan looked very fake and unreal in the sneak peak. And the less said about the boats t he better it is, compare the VFX to Kedarnath trailer which are so much better. If you gotta do masala and masala at big scale, you have to take the leaf out of Bahubali. It was same old. same old Mahabharata story, but it all felt so good and entertaining and refreshing. Just see the first time Prabhas meets Tamannah. very utterly sexy and convincing Tamannah with full on objectification but in a very convincing way. All the small characters from Kattapa, to villains to smaller sub-plots. Anushka sweety with sword fights, amazing and convincing.
For YRF: if you want to make a movie at this big scale, nepotism or couchism should be out. You should cast people on merit and merit alone. Maybe Adi Chopra got ton of free money to invest into a movie from venture capitalists, dunno but right now he must be losing all his hair from the stress of this debacle. At least he should have invested in a better editor for this movie!! Now please don’t hate me too much for this “analysis” and rambling thoughts.

          • Rajamouli ke baap ne likkha, Rajamouli ne direct kiya, Prabas ne execute kiya! In that order. But the movie is made on editing table. If the movie is awesome and editor screws up or if the movie is terrible but editor makes enough cuts to make it all look still good. I feel editor is like clothing designer. Some genius designer can make clothing look fab on a fat girl. Some bad designer can make clothing look terrible on size zero model. But then I could be wrong. But this is my thinking. I think all great directors (think of Hirani in India or Hrishikesh M.) are great editors. So Hirani’s three idiots was not working and Hirani narrowed it down to 1st half where Chatur reactions were absent or reactions to Chatur where absent. So he then went ahead and strategically placed Chatur or Aamir reactions and suddenly the film worked in that it enabled the idea of what director was trying to say to audience. For Meghana Gulzar’s Raazi, Mahesh Bhatt sat with her in editing room. Thats why Raazi looks so much better in the end as a product than what it really is. He enhanced the soppy paced, crying drama into somewhat of a interest holding thriller.
BTW, this is what the audience was saying at the intermission of ToH. Take it easy. lol

The irony is on the trolls who fancy themselves as masala fans and are trolling an honest (but not a great) tribute to masala.

In some pop-philosophy thrown in TOH, he did what it took to be ‘alive’ given his circumstances. To which Khudabaksh says that everyone gets a chance to redeem himself … and Firangi responds well when the time comes. Remember Lagaan, RDB, DCH, Dangal, PK to name a few?

Even the great Guru Dutt was inspired by film-noir. The great visuals in Pyaasa owe something to German Expressionism, which re-defined Hollywood in the times of Citizen Kane.

  62. Here’s something for those who are interested…could the TOH disaster be avoided?…

SOME filmmakers say it is invaluable in helping them gauge an audience’s response. Others say it threatens their integrity. But nearly everyone concedes that movie testing has become a studio addiction not to be kicked any time soon.

Playing a film to a sample audience before it opens is not new: Frank Capra, Alfred Hitchcock and other greats liked to have their films shown to preview audiences to discern where the laughs or gasps did or didn’t come, when there was too much coughing, when the restrooms became too crowded for comfort. But those screenings were spontaneous, casual affairs — often the studio simply slipped the film into a theater unannounced, and there was nothing scientific about the process.

But not all. ”It’s a very arduous process that most directors find difficult and simplistic,” Mr. Pressman said. Andrew Bergman, the director of ”Honeymoon in Vegas” and other comedies, loathes the process and says that all the information he got from testing his recent ”Isn’t She Great” was that audiences didn’t want to watch Bette Midler die. Oliver Stone does not usually test his movies, but he made an exception for ”Natural Born Killers,” he said, ”because I had to know if it was too way out there.” On his most recent film, ”Any Given Sunday,” his contract with Warner Brothers stipulated that if he went over budget, he had to test. He did, so he did.

”I ended up cutting about 15 minutes after the test,” Mr. Stone said, ”and I liked feeling the heat of the audience. I don’t mind testing, per se, but it’s part of this becoming such a product-oriented business. It can ruin the integrity of the film, and the director becomes another cog in the machine.”

The best-known nontester is the best-known director. ”Steven Spielberg doesn’t do it,” Ms. Press of DreamWorks said. ”Why not? Because he doesn’t need to. He just doesn’t like the process and doesn’t think it can tell him anything he doesn’t know.”

    • Not sure, An Jo, if this could have prevented anything. From my personal work experience I have found it more effective and prescriptive to adapt to constant customer feedback and changing focus/requirements, when working in RAD iterations (only possible in small scale modularized prototyping projects with a small specialised team), than when working in an Agile environment across verticals in a big project with many teams involved. Both requires different management skills too at different levels with lot of inter-dependencies. 63. If we think logically then it’s pretty obvious what should have happened in ToH.

Khudabaksh needed to die — for real. And he needed a proper (grand) exit that ought to have left its mark.

Firangi would then take over his mantle — leave all the buffoonery behind, along with the duplicitous behavior and lead the revolution against Clive.

That’s what makes sense in a masala universe. Otherwise you’re just watching another David Dhawan tribute to masala.

    • In another perspective, its a dual tribute to both masala and jack sparrow – which made in jarring to some extent, more alien in my books to a surprised audience.

Its the same case with Aamir’s career and the most consistent line of criticism for him.

    • If you revisit the film, once Khdabaksh dies (apparently) and passes the amulet to Firangi, he is just using his duplicity to help out in the cause. Its a devious Machiavellian way to get to the target. He just appears to be helping the brits.

    • Bingo – this is how simple this film was. Second half – could have had flashbacks of Big B if they wanted him in narrative. But once ‘dead’ he should never have returned. And Firangi should have been a Thug in second half, a bygone era thugish Sanjay Singhania. Not a tattoo lunatic but just some very revengeful version of Azaad.

      Hahahaha on David Dhawan.

    • And I will add this bit. Both of Aamir’s characters in SS and TOH are similar in the fact that both come across ‘non-hero’ like (even repulsive to some extent by traition) but actually helps out in the cause more than anyone else. So in that way SS and TOH form a ‘couple’. This maybe one focal reason why both films have been rejected in India. We perhaps cant consume such characters in a mass scale commercial entertainer. Or maybe all the message-oriented films have made it impossible for him to be acceptable in a non-straight role in India?

SS did fine in China. Lets see what TOH does in Jan.

No 1: Aamir Khan – He consolidates his No 1 position with a rock solid record opening of ToH. The debacle of ToH has made the Halo around him disappear. I wish he could do a quickie but looks like he has a BIG plan for 2020.

No 2: Salman Khan – After two flops and one hit in last two years, Salman came down to No 2 after Eid this year. His next Eid release will be dangerously placed.

No 3: Ranbir Kapoor – One Sanju and he changed the rankings. Next year Is Bhramastra Part 1. A christmas release.

No 4: Akshay Kumar – He has not given a flop since some time. This could be his saving grace among the top stars. He needs to deliver a biggie now to return to top 3. All eyes on 2point0.

No 5: Ranveer Singh / Ajay Devgn – Ranveer has a Biggie coming Simbaa. Ajay needed a release this year to remain in top 5 by end of this year,

    • The halo is blown open and the opportunity for redemption is far away. There is no #1. It’s a vacant spot right now. Everyone is fighting for it. Salman/Aamir together. Rest are far behind. Akshay can make a dash for it, even SRK.

The year right now belongs to the small content films. Barring Sanju and Padmaavat, the biggies have failed. 2.0 and Zero IMO will do well. Ranveer Singh might have a breakout year if Simbaa is huge as he already has Padmaavat. Ranbir’s Bhramastra sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I have little hope for this genre unless Rajamoulli starts a masala school for Bollywood directors. VKA can be his first student.

I understand these are low levels and there’s not much to fall but instead of spending time to figure out the real gross they just put apprx gross on their own. *************

You also have to remember that in the past few years, Hollywood films are taking big bites out of our box office, especially these big-budget flicks like The Jungle Book, Jurassic World series and Avengers Infinity War. Why, Avengers Infinity War, released earlier this year, broke into the Rs 200 crore club, something Race 3 and in high probability, Thugs of Hindostan, couldn’t do. So the audiences are really getting their fill of visual spectacles from the ones coming from the West. What they look into our cinema is good storytelling and great entertainment factors. Brilliant VFX should only be enhancer, not the driving force. And certainly not have a hero in a movie that is clearly inspired from Hollywood film!

While I was writing this piece, another Aamir Khan movie, Dangal, kept coming in my mind. Made on a fraction of the budget of TOH, we all know that it is now the highest grossing Indian movie worldwide. Thus, proving my point of the article. Fingers crossed that Aamir Khan has better luck with his rumoured 7-part Mahabharat series. We are rooting for you!

      • Been really busy after watching. Will jot down few comments . Simply put – Aamir rocks and movie sucks! The movie should have been named ‘Adventures of Firangi Mallah’ with few twist to the current story. Few portions are very well directed but the 2 biggest flaws of the movie are no emotional depth, connectivity and TOO loud background music ruining everything. Even though Aamir is the only good part of the movie(baring him in Suraiyya song which was unwatchable), his presence actually ruined the script. It became too much about Aamir and less about the story it was supposed to tell. Aamir’s character just overshadows the script and that is never a good thing. Like, Prabhas was not number 1 star prior to Baahubali but SS Rajamouli still took him and made the most expensive budgeted movie without worrying about the returns. You can’t take megastar like Chiranjeevi and try to make Baahubali, he’ll simply overshadow the script. So, basically Aamir’s character is great but simply in the wrong movie. There are way too many flaws which I think everyone already pointed but I would like add that editing is not bad at all. I don’t think you would want an epic movie to be around 2 hours, there is not many useless scenes especially on script or paper. The execution was the culprit with no attachment. Apart from Aamir.. no other actor was even given a well defined character. I mean you don’t need to go back in 70’s to get basics right.. even recently Baahubali made sure that all characters are well written. You can’t just flush out 1 character and expect movie to do wonders at boxoffice. If anyone watches just 5 mins of movie and watch the Manzoor-e-Khuda song and you’ll figure out that this movie will flop. That is one of the cringing songs out there.

All the antics done by Aamir’s character are good to watch but it hardly adds anything to the story. Its like the ball is already in the air and Aamir is running very hard to make as many runs possible and in twice the speed. But dude, if that ball is caught, your running is gonna be waste and not useful for the team. Samething happened. All his side antics and flipping will go waste if the movie’s main story doesn’t work.

Overall not the worst movie ever made but if people don’t like it completely, it’ll flop and nothing could have saved it. Just wasted one of Aamir’s good characters in this movie.

          • The thing is, I’m a big Sherlock Holmes fan. Have read all the books, some graphic novels and was quite a fan of the Granada series featuring Jeremy Brett. Hell, I even watched Robert Downey Jr. play a bizarro Holmes in the Hollywood adaptation.

And I had my apprehensions about this series as well. I wasn’t a fan of the first episode. I thought they were trying to be too clever — Holmes with his sarcastic wit and Watson, the broken-from-inside war veteran. But I was wrong. Very wrong.

This series isn’t about Holmes, the detective at all. He solves crimes, while referencing all of Conan Doyle’s classic stories (even falls in love with Irene Adler aka The Woman) but this isn’t a detective series at all. It’s a full-blown psycho-analytical study of Sherlock Holmes, the character. As seen through his relationship with Watson, his brother Mycroft (Gatiss himself) and Moriarty. It has some wonderful imagery, literally getting inside Holmes’ head at multiple times — capturing his fears, his frailty and his deepest emotions. Some of the sequences are deeply hypnotic and they have nothing to do with solving crimes.

It greatly helps that both Martin Freeman (Watson) and Cumberbatch (Holmes) have completely nailed their parts. Nothing less to be expected from British actors anyway!

A masterpiece, in every sense of the word.

What people don’t realize is that each episode is building up towards its grand finale. A completely absurd plot perhaps but freaking emotional.
