It was reported that Rajkumar Hirani was in talks with Bhushan to direct Mogul, with Aamir Khan in lead. Apparently, it was Aamir who was keen that Hirani directs the film. A trade source informs, “While Hirani loved the script, he hadn’t given his nod to direct it yet. He was contemplating it and excited about the prospect of directing Aamir as both share a great rapport, personally and professionally, and the deal was almost done till Thugs Of Hindostan happened. It had quite a disastrous release at the box office and apparently, Aamir is quite unhappy with the box office results so he is now in two minds about being a part of a biopic like Mogul, which is also a period drama of sorts. It’s not just Mogul – the actor is being very careful about all his future projects now while trying to analyse what went wrong with TOH. Aamir and Rajkumar Hirani will take a call on Mogul with Bhushan Kumar soon after a joint meeting. While Aamir has given a commitment to Bhushan, he’s also very particular about what he signs. Thugs Of Hindostan has come as a shock to Aamir and there’s a strong possibility (and talk) of him opting out of Mogul as producer. Currently, he is said to be busy with another huge project in the Mahabharata which, reports say, will be a seven-part-long web series that will consume a major part of his time.”

The source adds that because of the vastness and complexity of the subject, Aamir will keep a close watch on the production of his web series. “He plans to not only build a core team (production, creative and casting) right from scratch but also will be flying to the United States of America to get a good technical team on board as the web series will involve a certain amount of VFX.”

    • One thing good about this MB project is that after ToH debacle Aamir has taken Advait out of it and assigned the hindi remake of FG to him. Dont think Advait has the skills to be creative director of a web-series on MB.

  6. I have kept away from this site through a fortnight. I peeped in on 8th morning, then fled. Would be watching TOH in the evening. Did not wish to spoil my mood.

I liked the film a fair bit despite the dragging stiff parts. Almost the entire hall laughed through the film whenever Firangi appeared and lightened up the proceedings. We were laughing as we left after the final scene . I loved that cheeky Inglistan on the map. Loved Sanichar and his wacky psychic character. Loved his interactions with Firangi — who was an absolute hoot. Have never seen such a crazy subversive character in a Hindi film. I understand why Aamir did this film. For the role of a lifetime. And he pulled it off. Even the snobby Shubhra Gupta of IE found him good, the only good bit in the film, as per her high horse reasoning.

There is a particular scene early on. Firangi espies a pair of red tinted glasses in a bush next to his seated self. He gently fingers it out, tries it on , looks satisfied. Lovely little moment. There were a few more like this one.

Loved the music, right from the time promos began. Loved the two hilarious songs, especially. But Manzoor e Khuda sounded like this seventies masala movie numbers. Fine with it. On screen this song sequence neededto be shortened.

Watched the promos, all ten of them. There were well made, interesting.

Was shocked by the negativity that started along with promos. Seemed to be a concerted campaign.

The film released — and the negativity spilled out in a couple of hours. The reviews were vicious. Reminded me of the Mangal Pandey days.

Surprisingly, early reports spoke about audience being entertained despite the dragging bits.

Then how did the film crash ?

I know I will be ridiculed for saying this — but I do believe that this film was systematically killed. Rival fans, the filmi media that Aamir refuses to placate, general Indians( like a few here) irritated with Aamir for various reasons, political trolls — all who feel that this short guy has had too much success — all helped in the process.

The campaign worked. A decent enough film has crashed beyond all explainable limits.

I watched Tiger Zinda Hai with a group of 12, last December. Not a single person liked the film. Not one memorable song, save the last bit. But we were laughing as we left the hall, having savoured popcorn and stuff, laughing off another Bhai film.

Aamir does not get such affectionate ‘ Jaane do’ pats. He will be lucky to survive two rejections — Secret Superstar TOH. If.

Was scrolling through this site yesterday. Have liked some of the comments and positive words.

Have like Bhawana Somaaya’s fair three star review. Also the positive reviews from Singapore’s Strait Times, Variety, The Guardian. Fair words for a film that was disappointing in parts, but not terrible.

    • LS, you may be right about the critics review.

But the feedback from friends etc was quite mixed. Basically the expectation was humongous and those who went with high expectation were shocked.
I also know many who found it ok. As i put that in the previous BO thread the movie did see 70% approval (from i loved Aamir’s role, one time watch, time pass hai) for the movie. It was the other 30% which was the problem (Mostly those who went with very high expectation as it was touted as the biggest Hindi film ever).

There were memes and what not.

The media went to town talking about TOH being one of the biggest films. Yash Raj made some noise too, but they mainly erred in raising ticket prices by 10 %. Their letter to exhibitors went viral on social media. This surely irritated quite a few viewers. Of course TOH was not the only film to have raised ticket prices for opening days. A friend spoke about watching a popular English film this summer, at IMAX , Kolkota, paying higher than usual rates.

I watched Mission Impossible 6, at IMAX in my city, ( Chennai) paying 320 + 30 as net charges. Am not sure what is the regular rate, but prices here are kept moderate thanks to a receptive state government. For TOH in a double screen theatre ( converted thus from a single screen theatre), I paid 220 (180+ 40 for net booking, I think). So rates here being moderate, the resentment would be less in case of dissatisfaction.

Watched TZH in a Hyderabd multiplex, at rs 250, the row against the wall, almost filled up with our extended family.😄

Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai have criminally high ticket rates, I understand.

PVR once spoke about building a chain of low priced theatres. Nothing came of it. Aamir and a few more film industry folk have often spoken about low priced theatres. They should try and get this idea moving and happening.

Returning to the topic of high expectations from TOH — Aamir himself did not speak in such a manner. He sounded quite modest in his expectations — would have expected a semi-hit.

‘Firangi In Engleeshthan’ – Cracking the TOH Code!

Some fans in this blog have talked about Amitabh in TOH and how its a tribute to his peak imagery that has been lost in time. A few Aamir fans have said Firangi is a ‘fun’ character and that Aamir had a ball doing this. There is no doubt that he did, not at least to those who has actually seen this film. But thats not all!

I have loved this character (seen it 2 times in theatres already and will eagerly wait for it to some on netflix/prime for more viewings). Its not that you can resist laughing WITH him and AT him, the ‘duplicity’ in this double-crossing ‘thug’ quite amusingly represents Aamir in Bollywood over last 20 years. For every Sarfarosh he has always backtracked with a Mela. There was MP following Lagaan, Fanaa after RDB, Ghajini after TZP, DG after 3I (!), D3 after Talaash and son and so forth. After he reached a crescendo with Dangal’s success all over, he selected to do TOH with YRF/Acharya gang! In short, he has been double-crossing his different set of audience all through these years and everyone had accepted it passively. Till TOH released …

There is an introductory scene of Firangi, after double crossing a maharaja, a bunch of thugs and then the brits (with a grandma dying story) he proudly goes off sitting on a donkey (that he proudly calls his master – a dethroned Nawab) wearing a ridiculous hat and a pair of red goggles. The scene is gleefully edited with Firangi’s donkey taking one step forward, then one step backward. Its a hilarious representation with an apt bgm … and is more allegorical than Amitabh’s physically impressive swashbuckling gig at 75.

And its not done in a way to demean anyone. Its much more self-deprecating humor than Mera Naam Joker or Kaagaz Ke Phool. At one point his reluctant side-kick tells him that either he is ‘mahaan’ or a ‘chutiya’. Firangi coolly retorts back claiming he is a ‘mahaan chutiya’. He literally kills the film by winking at his audience for 3 fun-filled hours. And during my second viewing I felt that showing a mirror to all his diverse audience was perhaps the primary reason behind such extreme backlash uniformly from all quarters.

If you revisit the film, once Khdabaksh dies (apparently) and passes the amulet to Firangi, he is just using his duplicity to help out in the cause. Its a devious Machiavellian way to get to the target. He just appears to be helping the brits. At least for me, thats the highlight of the film! [ And I will add this bit. Both of Aamir’s characters in SS and TOH are similar in the fact that both come across ‘non-hero’ like (even repulsive to some extent by traition) but actually helps out in the cause more than anyone else. So in that way SS and TOH form a ‘couple’. This maybe one focal reason why both films have been rejected in India. We perhaps cant consume such characters in a mass scale commercial entertainer. Or maybe all the message-oriented films have made it impossible for him to be acceptable in a non-straight role in India? ]

After his usual berayal, Firangi asked Khudabaksh to not sacrifice himself. In fact he explicitly states that he first betrayed him and then saved his life. So they are now quits as per him. He has no qualms or guilt regarding Khudabaksh sacrificing himself. But since Khudabaksh requests him to save Zafira, he obliges cause he perhaps felt responsible for putting her in danger with his betrayal. Once he saves her, he wants to leave the thugs and move on. But has a change of heart when the brits attack their hideout. Why shud he suddenly become a shahenshah like messiah as expected in a regular masala movie? It makes no sense.

However, once he has a change of heart he takes Zafira to Surraiya and together they plot to kill clyve during dussehra festivities. But when he finds out that Khudabaksh is alive he pretends to side with brits so that he can give them an advantage which he clearly explains later. When the time comes he saves Khudabaksh and the thugs finally defeat the brits. Once that job is done, he wants to move on because he has another dream to fulfill- Firangi in Engleeshthan! So no surprise that he is planning MB with Netflix next.

In some pop-philosophy thrown in TOH, he did what it took to be ‘alive’ given his circumstances. To which Khudabaksh says that everyone gets a chance to redeem himself … and Firangi responds well when the time comes. Remember Lagaan, RDB, DCH, Dangal, PK to name a few?

In another perspective, its a dual tribute to both masala and jack sparrow – which made in jarring to some extent, more alien in my books to a surprised audience.

Anyways, in TOH the emotional connect for revenge angle had to be with Fatima’s character. But it never happens to due to Acharya’s lacking and Fatima’s poor acting. [ Even SS suffered with similar lack of connection with the lead girl due to more aggressive and one-dimensional characterisation.] TOH is more hollywood at its core (specially Firangi’s characterization) than any regular masala troupe that the general indian audience is used to. I guess it was bound to face the backlash the way it did. Whats completely logical in a typical hollywood script can unsettle the indian audience due to their ‘set’ expectations. That way TOH is perhaps as big a disappointment as Taran is shouting for last few days. [ But SS did fine in China. Lets see what TOH does in Jan. ]

I felt cinematography is top-notch – They have created a true fairy-land with forts and jungles and all that is supposedly exotic to foreign eyes about India. The Rajasthan bits just seals it.
I criticised the vfx shown in trailer, but didnt mind it during theater watching (cant say that about BB2). Yfx team surely did some work here after the trailer backlash.

With the overall backlash and nil acceptance of TOH, this will hopefully be the end of his Firangi-ness in his project selection. Khudabaksh puts it aptly that he can sense a ‘restless’-ness in Firangi and hoped to make him truly free (Azaad!). I guess he may truly succeed in this. The MB decision is the right direction (no matter what results such a huge project will yield).

Bye bye Masala. Bye bye Firangi. And as Firangi would say – “Jai Shambhu !”

    Postscript – On Mahabharata Web-series:

Looking at the Indian response to SS and TOH, i dont think its wise to invest a lot of money to make a MB films with Aamir as Krishna. Unless one dumbs it down … but then the essence of the story itself will vaporize. Krishna is a lot more Machiavellian character in MB than Firangi. I am quite intrigued to know how masala fans wud react to see a ‘desi masala film’ where Arjuna defeats Bhishma using Shikhandi as a shield (as advised by Krishna), Krishna emotionally brainwashing Arjuna (by citing Abhimanyu’s death) to unethically slaughter Karna (when the latter had requested a pause in battle) or Bheema defeating Duryodhana on final day by sheer cheating (again as advised by ‘God’ Krishna). No way he can play such a character in any other platform than a Netflix web series.

One can NEVER emotionally connect to a character like Krishna (whether depicted in a serious avatar or a more notorious ‘natkhat’ avatar). You can perhaps connect with Pandavas or the Karna character emotionally in a masala setting (lowbrow or highbrow) with all their history and value for righteousness and other angles romped up properly by a director of Rajamouli’s caliber. Krishna’s actions are not so black or white and will never connect in a ‘traditional’ masala setting.

    • Wow. Fabulous write up! Need to watch the film again, but I am not even sure if it is still running in third week. Was away from town on a ten day pilgrimage-holiday in a misty Karnataka hill town, plus Bangalore. I watched the film on 8 th, then set off for holiday on 9 th, returning to regular wifi-d life , home on 20th. Ah well, it will soon land upon on small screen. But I would surely love to watch it again. Despite its minuses, it deserves a second watch. There are layers. But there is also some confusion in the execution.

Thanks again. Firangi pulled Aamir into this film. I think there is a bit of Firangi in him. He is a prankster at heart, quite a Rangeela. Pity that neither media nor audience can appreciate this zany character — or the actor behind it.

Caught up with Bohemian Rhapsody today!

And what a delight it was! While I agree that it is somewhat filled with narrative cliches and becomes sappy in places, it comes alive like a wildfire when the greatest hits are covered in a medley sort of fashion. It also helps when the central performer is such a delight. He owns the character’s signature movements during his stage performances, and gives to the audience an experience. The film for this reasons needs to be cherished instead of just being critiqued. this is more like a glorious tribute to all his famous lyrics and compositions, and the karaoke lyrics appear on screen to invite the audience members to participate and sing along.

Quite a fun time at the movies. I suggest not missing out on this, whether you are a fan or not!

  11. SCOOP: SS Rajamouli to direct Mahesh Babu immediately after RRR
    BySubhash K. JhaNov 23, 2018 – 11:44 am IST

The biggest collaboration of the Baahubali director SS Rajamouli’s career may well be his next film, a multi-million extravaganza in a realistic space featuring Mahesh Babu in the lead. Rajamouli and Mahesh have been brainstorming over a possible collaboration for the past couple of years. They’ve finally hit upon an idea that they both like.

The ambitious film may be the most expensive Indian film ever.

According to a well-informed source, the budget is not the main consideration here. “Mahesh Babu wants Rajamouli to create the kind of cinema that will be a game-changer. Just like Baahubali was in its own genre. At the same time, Mahesh Babu doesn’t want another Baahubali or a costume drama with Rajamouli. The two have been throwing ideas at one another now. They’ve finally cracked an idea for something never attempted before,” says a source close to Mahesh Babu.

Note – All figures from boxofficemojo and using concurrent conversion rates for usd to inr.

So 410 cr nett business in India combined for these 3 films. Next year hollywood will release Avengers, Lion King and Spider-Man – all 3 films can do v well in India. They have Star Wars too, but that wont work in India going by historic data.

  14. Rajinikanth And Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 Has Reportedly Recovered Rs. 370 Crore Out Of 500 Already

Big budget films sometimes fail at the box office due to their weak plotlines, the latest example of which is Thugs Of Hindostan

Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film 2.0, which was made on a budget of Rs. 500 crore, has recovered a good chunk of the amount through the sale of the film’s satellite rights, digital rights and the distribution rights, reports Bollywood Hungama. Lyca Productions sold 2.0’s satellite rights for Rs. 120 crore and the digital rights for Rs. 60 crore in all versions (the film is releasing in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu). The producers have sold the distribution rights in the northern belt, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala but they’ve retained the region of Tamil Nadu and overseas, which as per Bollywood Hungama will fetch them maximum profit. Bollywood Hungama report stated that the “self-distribution model” in Tamil Nadu and abroad will help the filmmakers maximise their profit.
Here’s the reported distribution break-up for 2.0, as per Bollywood Hungama:

Satellite Rights: Rs. 120 crore (All Versions)

Digital Rights: Rs. 60 crore (All Versions)

North Belt Rights: Rs. 80 crore

Andhra Pradesh/Telangana Rights: Rs. 70 crore

    Karnataka Rights: Rs. 25 crore

    Kerala Rights: Rs. 15 crore

    Total: Rs. 370 crore

The Bollywood Hungama report also stated that the remaining Rs. 130 crore (to reach break-even point) can be covered in the first week of the film’s release if the content is strong. Recently, Yash Raj Films’ big budget film Thugs Of Hindostan failed to secure good box office numbers despite an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, because of its poor reviews. On the other hand, Badhaai Ho, a film made on a relatively smaller budget, collected over Rs. 200 crore worldwide based on strong content and positive word-of-mouth reviews.

  16. Finally, it seems that DC comics is coming back to the game and giving some stiff competition to Marvel, thanks to Aquaman. The American superhero film has recorded the highest-ever advance ticket sales in the first 24 hours beating Avengers: Infinity War as per Atom Tickets’ website. The website had kept a special deal for Amazon Prime member users, which gave them early access to the film. Well, we think this offer has definitely helped the film to achieve this feat.

On the Fandango website, the Jason Momoa starrer has beaten biggies like Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Fall Out and Tom Hardy’s Venom in advance booking sales. With this kind of response, we surely hope that the makers might be thinking about its sequel. The lead actor also thinks that there is a possibility of its second installment and said, “I definitely have an opinion. “Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome… But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”

Aquaman director James Wan, who previously helmed Furious 7 and The Conjuring also expressed his thoughts and said, “There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well. There’s the Aquaman story, but then there are the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.” While the film is set to hit the screens in USA on December 21, it will release one week before in India on December 14 to avert clash with SRK’s Zero. So, are you planning to watch the film?

And remember, the type of links/articles you post, the way you do it, the frequency, it is pretty easy to make out what your intentions are. Hopefully, one will realize that one’s having fun and muddying the waters on someone else’s space…

Well said!! Actually i checked online and there are no negative reviews anywhere which Marcus is claiming.
Even the one or two distributors review which exists are praising 2point0 to the moon. But I know how to look and pick the bread-crumbs. So we need to chill as Akshay will say, the message is-

Great year for Ranveer (Padmaavat), Ranbir (Sanju), Aaliya (Raazi), Rajkumar Rao (Stree) and Khurana (BH). Also for hollywood (AIW, JW and MI6).

Not so good for the Khans.

      • The trends of this year do not promise great returns for 2.0 or Zero. Specially in the hindi belt where hollywood films and small films (which free of star clap-trappings) are doing rather well. Both 2.0 and Zero are depending on Buddhas doing masala nonsense (same as some old fans’ comments in this blog regarding these two films). Race 3 and ToH results seem to suggest that general audience has moved on from such laughable antics from old guyz …

      • Ageist comment, Marcus. 😏 So it’s acceptable to watch 56year old Tom Cruise, but not our 53 year old Khans?

Allow me to spell out my views a bit more about this flop film TOH which I love despite its negatives. I connected to it and so did a few more fans, so there. In any case, two big movies release soon and TOH will become total dustbin history.

What matters is the conviction you bring to your screen action, whatever your age. I liked Aamir as Firangi, never felt his 53 years. Was thoroughly entertained by his antics. Loved his merry twinkling eyes and smile. Loved his quieter more introspective moments. Aamir did this film for his role no doubts there. And a few who term him as hamming and overracting, they need to understand that Aamir played his character the way it was written. You cannot underplay such a character.

Liked some of the smaller characters like Sanichar.
Loved the final scene when Sanichar and a Firangi get together on a boat to a Inglistan.😄 And Katrina suddenly wiggling her way out of a drum. That was cute and funny.

Even Big B had some quieter bits of levity. Mostly of course he was the grand old man.

Loved the flirtation between Firangi and Katrina’s Suraiyya. The Suraiyya Jaan laegi kya song was a hoot. Was absolutely fine with Aamir blonde goofball avatar. You need a self deprecating sense of humour to even attempt this sort of buffoonery. Loved the words of this song and Vashmalle too.The dialogue and lyrics are from Amitabh Bhattacharya of Dangal fame.

The film failed in totality, but I liked the individual performances. Never mind that the leading men are 50 plus and 70 plus.

        • I loved the film and Aamir in it. But i was talking abt the ‘generic’ acceptance from his audience. Maybe people are really expecting more from him after Dangal, both regarding matured straight roles and more value and content oriented films.

I am personally fine if he does ToH sequel next, would love to see more of Firangi’s adventures on screen!

        • “Loved the words of this song and Vashmalle too.”

Basically you’re loving everything. Vashmalle and its lyrics too? I can reply long but let me stick on this point for now. Firstly Amitabh’s character shouldn’t been even drinking and dancing in the movie. His character is built very idealistic without any extra words. Even if he dances, it should have been like last few mins joining Aamir and gang but instead its Amitabh who starts the song and does the majority of the dances. And steps are of all his yesteryear movies and very silly choreography from Prabhudeva without understanding the period or age or character of Amitabh.

You mentioned lyrics.. I cringed on screen when Amitabh was singing..

          “Qaazi bole peena paap hai,
Lekin apni tabiyat madira chaap hai,
Na bandhu na saka, apna kaun saga,
Ek saaqi hi maayi baap hai”

To add to the ridiculous lyrics, you need to see the steps for these lines on screen!

I don’t even want to this detail in criticizing the movie. For me simple Amitabh shouldn’t have been dancing like drunkard without any life purpose in the song. Maybe Amitabh/Aamir combo song was demand from distributors and they added one without any backstory where dozens of dancer girls show up in the hidden caves out of nowhere.

But if you said you liked the song and especially the lyrics, its truly surprising to say the least!

I stick to my stand. I liked the words. It was a fun buddy drinking song. And just because Amitabh is this respected elder of the group, there is no reason that he should not let his hair down, for a change. So this curious newbie is inducted into their group and it becomes an occasion for them to drink and dance. I do not find it objectionable. It lightens the film.

Yes, the film had problems with pace and logic. The English guys speaking in Hindi — weird. The opening scenes seemed a bit stiff, the second half meandered and stretched, but finally came together. The Manzoor e Khuda song sequence felt overlong. But the final scenes were merry and fun and most of us laughed along as we left the hall.

Despite the negatives, self and three ladies next to me — we felt entertained. My husband gave the film an ok 45 %, while I gave it 60-65. He looked at his phone occasionally ( bad sign)….and missed out on some of the interesting Avadhi dialogue which I enjoyed. However stretched and boring a scene, I NEVER look at my phone. I feel it is an insult to the film team. Though I have dozed off for a couple of minutes, at times — a post lunch matinee show of Swades long back, ditto last Christmas at a theatre , watching TZH.

I know my Hindi poetry; still dip into the Padhyamala anthology from my Indian School Certificate high school days. Thank God I retained it. Those doheys, the poetry of Sumitranandan Panth, Harivanshrai Bachchan, all, still bring joy. Which is why Hindi film lyrics draw my attention. And I found the words of Vashmalle interesting enough.

This is the last word I am having on TOH.

Your comment is extremely disrespectful; ad ageist.

I am unable to understand that you are looking out for? Please make up your mind — you are one of the elitist Hollywoodish snobs; that look down upon our masala traditions, with scant respect to ACH or Chandamana traditions, or more inclined toward the ‘high-fi’ traditions of ‘graphic novels.’

Make up your mind: Bush’s tradition surprisingly well here; ‘ Your are either with us, or with them.”

I do not want your appreciation of TOH just because an above average actor like Aamir worked in it. He is facing an actor that will screw him even him his dreams when it comes to raw potental– a fact that’s acknowledged even by the actor under the lenses; Aamir.

I am still dumb-founded why would you like a venture like TOH when your own idol is shamelessly acknowledging the impact the masala trope of Bachchan’s films have had an impact on him. If anything, look at the amount of reverence that Aamir has on AB..

REvisit the last scene; when AB asks Aamir to jump onto the cage embedeed for Owen; it’s a literal ode to the masala rools —
Amitabh asks Aamir to abandon his shitty intellecutal shite; asks him to get on with the flow; Aamir respnds, ‘ KUUCH BHI KARVO LOGE YAAR!’,

These are sub-texts you ought to have caught…

All I am saying is, be consistent, with your ageist, BUDDHA contexts, please be careful..

I never interact with LS, who’s a blind worshipper of Aamir; with Sanjana, I can; but it’s disgusting and painful to read comments of LS as though this movie is about Aamir, and hardly about Amit…

Given the Tamilian roots, it’s understandable, the lack of education, but is’s painful nonetheless..

        • @ AnJo — I am replying to you, despite your painful words about me. I have enjoyed your reviews, be they about Aamir films or otherwise. Anyway, I am not apologetic about being a total fan of Aamir Khan. However — I am critical enough as needed. In fact among the circle of Aamir fans I interact with , on twitter and FB, I am probably the most critical. Here I do not criticise him as much, because there are others doing it ( notably on the 4 th and last TOH thread). Instead, I find myself being defensive.

TOH is an Aamir- Amitabh film, as I see it. It does not lessen my respect for Amitabh. It’s just the way the film has been presented. Not my doing. I have been watching Hindi. films a fairly long time, from the time of Amitabh, to be exact. But I watched very little at that age. I was actually a fan of Rajesh Khanna for a short while. Then I stopped watching Hindi films during nineties. Friends and Seinfeld seemed more interesting. Also world cup football, it’s stars, Italia’90, USA’94…
.till Maradona fell. I duly returned to a Hindi film worlds where SRK, then Aamir , mainly, shone bright. Salman, Akshay were fine too. Aamir in Sarfarosh, specially bright. Been his fan since then. But I can see him warts and all.

My Tamilian roots do not make me uneducated about Hindi films. I grew up through school and college in Jamshedpur(then Bihar) , lived through Delhi for a decade, then finally struck root in a Chennai. I am a Hindi film buff, watch Tamil very selectively. Love old Tamil cinema, Kamal Hasan’s best. Watch little of the new.

More than enough about self. Ihab, Idea Unique, they all know me from Aamir blog years. A recent commenter here, Tom D , too.

Why so much hot air against me, an infrequent commenter? I peep in,like, comment rarely if I have something to say. The total dismissal of TOH seemed unfair to me. So after a fortnight’s silence, I spoke up, a couple of days back.

When did I insult Amitabh? I spoke up for Aamir in TOH. Period.

The TOH debacle affects Aamir Khan and no one else. Yes, YRF too, of course, but they are a big production house with plenty of films big and small in their kitty. They will survive.

Amitabh, the grand old gentleman can simply waltz into his next release, a few months from now.

Aamir is bearing the brunt, financially and otherwise. The contempt and hate on social media has increased, post TOH crash. As somebody wrote here, the halo is gone. So why shouldn’t Aamir supporters speak up for him with regard to this film? He is the main loser. He has spent his regulation two years on this film, given it all he had…and lost out ultimately.

He does not get paid a penny, since YRF has not made profits with this film. Plus, one understands that Aamir is being asked to compensate distributors, exhibitors, what have you….why?

Salman and SRK have compensated distributors when they produced films that flopped.

Aamir should act in his own productions.

ps – I don’t understand masala myself (the definition used here often). I may be wrong but I associate with stereotypical depiction. Nothing wrong in that but at end of day a movie should be judged how well it is made.

        • LS: I apologize if you feel I am insulting toward you. I am NOT.

But this is my theory. If any body were to pull a data-trend — or a funnel view — of yor comments, you ONLY talk of or respond when it is favoring or you feel someone is attacking Aamir. Else, you disappear. I am pointing it out since that’s what I see. Please, you are welcome to disprove me.

I have, as yet, not seen a single comment from you that criticizes Aamir, educatively. You jump for his defence at the drop of a hat! I am not sure whether Aamir himself would ask for such a fan-following! And I say that as an Aamir fan myself..

I too am the BIGGEST fan alive of Bachchan; thought there are many things I hate about him, and make no bones in writing about those things. What Master said above, with regard to AB’s characterization, I completely agree with. If they wanted to pay a nostalgic tribute to AB of yesteryears, they could have just had him sitting in a corner and pulled him in for 3 seconds with his signature steps; but no, they went ALL out and made him dance for the entire length of the song! Of course, in the older masala traditions, you would have Dilip do the same stuff, and it would have been accepted, but this should have been masala re-invented; re-done! They missed it! One’s got to accept that!

I requested Marcus to stop writing ageist comments; since he follows the Hollywood mould when it comes to special effects and he has great insights into it; Master gives terrific insights into the insider notes of Bollywood — and I am grateful for his capsule reviews – I hope he doesn’t stop.

I do not like SRK as an actor — especially with the arm-stretching BS, but that doesn’t prevent me from liking or disliking his movies!

With our age, we need to get beyond this stuff! What got my goat, with you, is the hilarious liking of Aamir and zero understanding — or being understood but not wanting to care about — the heart of this film; masala traditions and Amitabh — the fact which was, actually, unabashedly espoused by Aamir, your idod. You only need to see his KBC episode with Amitabh to realize this..

        • I have criticised Aamir as needed, elsewhere on social media. I am muted in praise,as compared to many who are more generous. Here I tend to speak up for him, when I feel the need. I do tend to speak out in favour of anybody or anything I feel strongly about. And I was clear that the film TOH had been trashed more than it deserved to. And yet I stayed away from this site for a fortnight, after film’s release.

I have not exactly been a frequent visitor here. I occasionally peep in, read , like, move on.

I watched TOH on 8 th, left town, returned from a ten day trip back to a regular wifi world, decided to checkout Satyamshot. After reading through the four threads, I wrote what I felt, yesterday. That the film was disused more than it deserved to.

Perhaps it would have been wise to have stayed away. Now I come across as this idiot female fanatic which I am not.

I read some very contemptuous remarks regarding Aamir, from Bob Cristo and a couple of others ; one person saying that TOH did not deserve to make more than 100 crores.

Did I jump to AK’s defence? NO.

I understand that he is a public figure, with plenty of warts.

But there are some things about him I do like. And I am not the only one to feel so.

As far as this film is concerned — I cannot write long posts on TOH as a masala tribute. I can recognise it, but I cannot explain it. All I wrote was that I was entertained by the film, that I liked it beyond its negative points. I have mentioned some of the things I found entertaining about the film.

There is too much of hate and mockery on social media. Not a happy place.

An Jo – Without getting into this discussion of LS and you, I would like to copy-paste to my previous comment posted few weeks back.

“There is always 2 sides – You need to first love movies and that’s superset and in that we have favorites which are subsets All star and actors and movies come under that superstar. Srk’s movies is just a subset in the big superset of the movies I watch. I watch any good movie out there and some bad ones as well just out of my curiosity. I might miss other star movies but I don’t miss out any of the top 3 khans or Hrithik movies on big screen for any of their releases. I don’t miss any small movies which are very well reviewed and appreciated. But some fans are just living in the subset of their star and think that’s the whole universe. They don’t even care movies as much as much they care for the star alone. For them the day starts and ends with their star. For them the star is their superset and every other star is not even in that superset. I just find it pathetic life when I see that happen.

Its not about movies. People don’t care about cricket will die for Sachin or Virat Kohli and claim he’s greatest cricketer of all time. I ask, do you know stats or follow any old cricketers. They say they don’t follow cricket much but just huge fan of Sachin or Kohli (as they appear to be in the news of being in top position). I see many Aamir fans such category. I don’t see Akshay or Salman or SRK fans in that category. ”

What pathetic creatures we are — me and anybody else who dares to speak up for a film and a star- actor one feels has been unduly trashed beyond limits. The fact the we have lives beyond the star, that we watch others’s films, read a lot, review professionally in my case, attend film festivals and watch the best of world cinema, that one may not care to discuss them on this forum — that is pathetic, that one is being mocked unnecessarily.

Here is a tweet from an Aamir fan who has liked TOH. She is responding to one Malini Agarwal who has liked the film. And she is being defensive and apologetic for liking the film. It is this that angers some of us: this selective campaign against one ordinary film.

    • Again, I will say it one more time. I just copy-pasted my old comment when you were not even on the blog posting about TOH. It is generic statement about fans and how I see Aamir fans more than other fans who live in just 1 world. It is not against you or anyone unless you see yourself in that kind of fan.

Also, I’m not trashing anyone liking the movie. So many folks have liked the movie and I have not gone personally picking that points and replying except today’s point about Vashmalle. Even my own review, I didn’t go on talking negatives of the movie (doesn’t matter to pile on all the negative reviews, like I could have said this Amitabh point earlier too but unless I see something important to reply, I’m not going on negatives) and said only positives which is that the film should have been made differently calling it Adventures of Firangi Mallah and from his point of view and his adventures. They just wasted Aamir’s performance and his character in a bad movie. I think that’s one of the biggest compliments for this movie.

Either ways, you are stuck in this loop of not understanding the context and taking everything personal. So, am quitting this discussion.

There’s new trend of clear reject movie into some sort of martyr and cult classic when its not. Posting few positives here and there doesn’t help the case. Every flop will still have many positive reviews. For example: Raja Sen gave 5 stars to FAN and called it best SRK movie in ages but I wouldn’t bring that to any discussion as its clearly full on rejected movie. Aamir fans seems to doing that on the other hand! I don’t think anyone gave TOH 5 stars or above 3 stars. Fan got many of those still.

      • Ok, not taking it personally anymore. Sorry if I misunderstood. Just one point . We, Aamir fans who are speaking up here and there — do not consider TOH to be a five star film. Three stars is good enough for this hapless mixed up lost opportunity of a film.If I remember right Bhawana Somaaya was one of the few reviewers to give TOH three stars. Most gave 1 or 2 stars. But it did hurt to see Taran Adarsh give TZH 4.5 stars and 2 to TOH.

On Aamir’s fb page a while back, the star has posted three pics from an Asterix theme costume party he and his wife have hosted for his young son and friends. He has obviously moved on beyond the debacle. Fans need to move on too.

Just finished with Pataakha on Amazon Prime!

I had been meaning to catch this for very long, and I’m glad I did. What irked me was keeping the intentional physicality of the two main leads shabby (their husbands are surprisingly presentable). the makeup guys took things too seriously here: they look more like street urchins here instead of village/small town people.

the movie also is too loud, and takes some time getting used to. but it is consistently engaging with fantastic performances and a raw appeal. great to see a rural story where the women get the top billing. the writing is sharp and unpredictable, and some punchlines are pretty hilarious. it does get repetitive at places, but never unwatchable.

a good watch for sure with great India-Pak references. Vijay Raaz’s character is undoubtedly the metaphor for the father of the nation, and Badki’s success at opening a dairy might be a nod to the white revolution in India.

@LS – You are unfortunately wasting your breath. Some members here are just too ‘old’ (which somehow makes them feel privileged!) to accept their ridiculousness and hypocrisies. Nothing exist or ageist about this. Hopefully, they will soon go to sleep like they did after JHMS. So its just a matter of one more month …

    ***************

On a poor note, TOH managed to collect the amount of 0.52 crore on 3rd Friday & 0.60 crore on 3rd Saturday. Then on 3rd Sunday, it collected 0.70 crore and raised its 18 days total collection to 151.24 crore with 145.53 crores from Hindi & 5.71 crores from Tamil+Telugu.

2.0 Advance Booking Update: HOUSEFULL Boards Already Down South, Mumbai’s Pre-Release Buzz Strengthens!

It’ll be content speaking from Monday but till then 2.0 has every chance of shocking and surprising everyone.
    By Koimoi.com Team

2.0 Advance Booking Update: So, after Bengaluru, now Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad have also come into play. Although the advance booking is started at very selected cinemas, everything’s going all orange (filling fast) at those places.

The best scenario is for Chennai where more than 75% of the shows (where advance booking has started) are already filling fast. Also, many of shows in Telugu version are already sold out. Yes, very limited theatres have opened the booking but to see such a sight almost 5 days before the release is surely a treat.

Some cinemas in Bengaluru had already started the booking couple of days ago and more cinemas have jumped in the bandwagon by this weekend. Tamil version is filling fast & many shows are already sold out here too. As far as Kochi and Hyderabad are concerned, there are not much cinemas opening the advance booking. But the cinemas which are open to book are filling fast.

SPI Cinemas in Chennai and Coimbatore have already sold out all of their shows which is a huge indicator of the buzz down south. Also, if the sources are to be believed, many single screen theatres in Mumbai are already filling fast even before the advance booking starts online. It was Baahubali 2 which witnessed this level of craze & 2.0 could easily match up if it carries this similar momentum till the release.

It’ll be content speaking from Monday but till then 2.0 has every chance of shocking and surprising everyone. 2.0 is a science fiction action film, written and directed by S. Shankar, co-written by B. Jeyamohan, and produced by A. Subaskaran.

The film serves as a sequel to the 2010 Tamil film Enthiran, and features Rajinikanth reprising the roles of Dr. Vaseegaran and Chitti, alongside Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson.

The film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on November 29.

  35. @Idea Unique. Your sweet comment reminded me of the AK blog community through 2007-11. Aamir stopped blogging because of the trolling. And they are still doing it. Quite a few have landed up on his fb and Insta pages, demanding TOH ticket money back. And these are responses to his costume party pics with child and kiddie friends. So much negativity. I did not dare to check out comments under his twitter handle. Posts need to be read, but is wiser to ignore comments, mostly. Save the odd sane one, comments are the worst thing on social media . Rediff used to be bad , imdb boards too. Now toxic twitter is the new place for hate filled social media trawlers.

Your piece also reminded me — Aamir actually invited me casually to ‘drive down to Pondy’, during Talaash shoot. I laughed it off of course.😄 Those were fun years.

    • Actually Aamir fans should hibernate now and keep away from trolls. Many here have already done so. Aamir himself is about to embark on a big project (MB web-series) on digital platform, which will take its own sweet time to get to the point of release.

As for films there is a rumour that Advait is working on a script of Forest Gump remake, whose hindi remake rights is now with AKP. If this gets made, it will probably be a 2021 release. So its going to be a 3 year gap after ToH (like it was between 3I and Talaash). [Also, Raju Hirani wont be able to release 3I sequel before 2024, IF he indeed makes it after Munna Bhai 3. ]

Trolls can enjoy their amazing choice of films like Zero and Kicks and Housefulls in glee till 2021. No Aamir films for a while to point out how pathetic their choice of entertainment is, which in turn says a lot about what kind of people they really are in real life.

Did you became crazy after TOH flopping? You are giving constant personal remarks day in and day out for anyone other than Aamir fans just coz 1 movie flopped. All your comments are just displaying your personal life and not others which is gutter level. I told earlier too, just coz someone likes Aamir doesn’t mean they are higher strata of individuals in society and everywhere. This is the heights of blind fanatics who join particular fan to gain some self-esteem by calling themselves intellectual when in real life are biggest losers!

The common ground among these 3 films? Deliciously served comedy, married to genre conventions.

There is no way a film can trend well in India without a healthy comic dose. That’s just the state of things.

Aamir, who was sitting right next to the writer exclaimed, “Oh my god!” as the actor had previously remained mum about his exit from the project.

    • There are several lessons that fans of all stars should note from this interview (a great gesture by Aamir to speak so soon) and more so few Aamir Khan fans (specially Marcus / ideaunique / Tony) –
      1. Accept the defeat. Don’t try to play the moral victory card.
      2. Be humble in defeat ****
      3. Never consider your star to be infallible.
      4. Accept failures as a great learning.
      5. Trust your star to learn from their mistakes.
      6. You look a fool when you try to defend your loss. Be magnanimous. Avoid justifying.
      7. Move forward in life.
      8. Don’t get wounded and become revengeful.
      And Most importantly, remember

Your favourite stars has become HUGE because all of use together watch their films. Never assume only fans watch your star’s movies. In a way we all are fans of all stars with little degree of differences but very little.

  46. I think 2.0 may do well. More than Rajni or Akshay, it is the kind of optimism that a director like Shankar brings. It’s not like VK Acharya being at the helm!

There will be huge collections in the south, no doubt about that. And there, most credit should go to the Shankar/Rajni/AR Rahman team.

But the Hindi version rides primarily on Akshay Kumar’s shoulders. I dont’t think Rajni has an audience in the hindi belt. So, credit should be given where due. This is not the typical Akshay Kumar starrer, produced at 20-25cr, shot within 30 days, released within 8-9 months and without any other big name in there.

I don’t know if the film may recover its huge costs or not. But with Shankar out there, at worst the film may be end being underwhelming, considering the huge expectations out there. But I don’t think it is going to be a disaster of a film. I don’t feel I will be subjected to the ordeal I went through watching TOH. That was utter trash. And the main culprits were the script and the director.

  49. 2.0 – Among The Biggest Films Ever Made In India
    Tuesday 27 November 2018 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

This week will see the release of 2.0 which will be on of the biggest films ever made in India as costs hit around 500 crore on release. The film has gone over budget as the American company doing its VFX went bust last year which caused a huge delay in the film and took its a budget to another level. The budget is more than the two Bahubali film put together.

The film has cost 175 crore more than Thugs Of Hindostan which is the most expensive outright Hindi film of all time. Its always difficult to judge which films are the biggest ever but there are a few films that when released the amount they have to recover is so high that hardly any films have recovered that much prior to the release of these films.

The biggest films released in India in terms of costs are as follows,

Jhansi Ki Rani (1953) – This film had a budget of 60 lakhs including 55 prints costs which was insane as only one film had covered this amount till date and that was Chandralekha (1949) which was released in 2 languages. On top this film did not feature any box office draw of time. The film was a huge disaster at the box office.

Mughal-E-Azam (1960) – This legendary film cost around 1.25 crore on release with 100 prints and in time the cost went to 1.50 crore plus as a further 175 prints were taken over the next decade. When the film was released no film had ever recovered the amount this film took to make. If its comes to a push this was probably the most expensive film ever made in India.

Sholay (1975) – The biggest blockbuster that India has ever seen had a cost of around 2.50 crore on release with 150 prints but eventually the cost went to 3.50 crore plus as a further 500 prints apprx were taken out in time.

Shaan (1980) – The makers of Sholay got together to make Shaan which cost around 6 crore and this sum had been recovered by only film which was Sholay. No other film had a worldwide share of 6 crore in 1980 barring Sholay. The film was called a huge flop at the time of release but was running capacity houses for weeks and eventually went on to recover its huge costs.

Ra. One (2011) – This superhero film was made at a cost of 135 crore which was a sum which had been recovered by just 1 or two films at time if we go by worldwide revenue. The film was liked by the audience but did manage to cover the huge costs.

2.0 (2018) – The VFX loaded is the first non Hindi film which joins the biggest budgeted films India has ever made. Bahubali would also have been in the list if but it was two films instead of one. Again only one film Bahubali – The Conclusion has recovered the budget of 2.0 and that was also a multi language film. A case can be made for Dangal having this recovery but there was minimal revenue coming back from China.

Note – The above are not the record budget holders as some films will have a record budget but at the time its beaten the previous record holder after a long time by a minimal amount. A bit like if the Bahubali – The Conclusion box office number is beaten in the next few years its huge but if its beaten in ten years time then that will hardly be a huge achievement.

However never before has the villain of the movie done as much promotion as Akki is doing? Insiders say that the makers asked Akshay to bail them out once the movie got postponed and the costs escalated. The Hindi heartland has to do a HIT business else despite the best case scenario, 2point0 will not be able to recover.

Akshay agreed and he is doing an all out promotion for the producers knowing fully well that this can damage his image, etc. But he understands that if 2point0 even recovers the cost, it will pave way to unimaginable possibilities for Indian cinema.

      https://www.koimoi.com/box-office/2-0-how-many-days-will-it-take-to-emerge-as-akshay-kumars-highest-grossing-movie/

Khiladi Kumar has been consistent at the box office and is undoubtedly the most bankable star in Bollywood. Even though the actor has not yet made his entry into coveted 200 & 300 crore clubs, he’s been delivering box office successes in a streak, unlike any other stars in the industry. Currently, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is the highest grossing movie for Akshay, with the grand total of 133.60 crores.

Looking at the advance booking reports and excitement of the audience, it seems a sky-high day 1 is on cards, and if the word-of-mouth turns out to be extraordinary, the business would definitely shoot up tremendously in evening and night shows. Even in an ordinary scenario, it looks like 2.0 might cross Toilet: EK Prem Katha in just 2-3 days.

  54. One day before 2.0 release, I can say this – there will be a lot of ‘confusion’ regarding box office collections for this one. Tamil producers and Tamil trade guyz report collections in terms of ‘gross’ and ‘shares’. Hindi trade and audience gets confused and starts comparing with ‘nett’ figures of hindi films. For its prequel Robo, a lot of figures were thrown around in 2010 and there was some box office controversy. Turned out that all-india ‘gross’ for Robo was approx 200 cr (a record for Tamil film industry at that point of time) and its all-india ‘nett’ was around 150 cr only (same range as Dabangg released in same year). Both numbers were thrown around without proper context and created confusion. One can expect similar controversies with 2.0 in the coming days.

For example, Sarkar’s day one ‘gross’ was 30 cr in TN and 47 cr at all-india level. However, it was compared with Sanju’s day one ‘nett’ figure in media PR reports …

Toh failed. That does not mean it is an outright trash film. I saw it and it was good especially with amitabh providing the fatherly support to the wayward aamir. Badhaiho maybe good but it looks like tv than film. And so are some other small films.

It is ok to have one disaster when one has some 20 gems.
Does one miscarriage makes a woman not to have more kids?
Did floods or earthquakes destroyed places irrevocably?

Meanwhile I watched Mirzya and it was such a beautiful film. It is more like poetry with great songs, stunning visuals and a nice romantic story. Better than cheesy SLB romances. And Harshvardhan is more controlled actor than his father.

    • Meanwhile I watched Mirzya and it was such a beautiful film. It is more like poetry with great songs, stunning visuals and a nice romantic story.

Completely agree. I’m not a fan of Harshvardhan Kapoor or Saiyami Kher (Rakeysh Mehra could have chosen better actors) but even so, the film is poetry in motion. I really liked it. And its music, as is always the case in Rakeysh Mehra’s films, is such an underrated gem.

I am a big time fan of Rakeysh Mehra’s cinema.

      • Said it a while back here. The film has fantastic visuals. This is the kind of deal made to be watched on the big screen.

I think in terms of visuals and poetry of the cinematography, few hindi films may match Mirzya.

Call me a flawed amateur of cinema. But one of the main things I look for when watching a film in a theatre is the visual experience. Which is why I have been watching mainly Hollywood films in theatres since some years now. Most Bollywood films these days seem more tailor made for the small screen.

But a film like Mirzya belongs to the big screen. The visuals are like poetry in motion.

What a amazing he is. He’s hero of the movie for me. Absolutely stunned by his acting. Absolutely wonderful Villain. Shankar’s creativity at it’s best. Rajinikanth was also good but Akshay overshadowed him. Amy jackson was also good. Hats off to Shankar!! Thank you sir for making this kind of movie that too in India. The only movie for which India will be proud of! From acting to screenplay to visuals to vfx to direction everything was first class. This movie will & should work. Though this movie will be only masala action kind of movie for few people but that’s okay. We’re opening indore advance of the movie from next Thursday! Must watch.”

While Rajni looks plastic with all that whitewashing and too much makeup to cover his age. Shankar should have taken Dhanush instead. Or Kamal.

This movie is shot on 3D which even Hollywood doesn’t do it often. The experience will be similar to Avatar (last 3D movie I’ve seen which was shot in 3D). I don’t remember the last 3D movie made in India in last 2 decades except Ra.One’s introduction video game sequence with Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka. The real 3D is definitely something else and will be joy to watch on big screen.

  60. Why is Aamir Khan taking responsibility for THUGS OF HINDOSTAN failure?

In a rather strange extension of an actor’s jurisdiction, Aamir Khan has come forward claiming responsibility and apologizing to the public for disappointing them with his latest release, Thugs Of Hindostan.

While outwardly this seems like a magnanimous gesture, the motive behind the film’s actor coming forward to claim responsibility for its failure seems indeterminate.

“In what capacity is he apologizing for the film’s failure? He is neither the producer nor the director of Thugs Of Hindostan. So is this Mr Aamir Khan’s way of acknowledging that he was ghost-directing the film all along?” asks a prolific filmmaker who has been associated with Aamir in the past.

Sources at Yash Raj Films say, “Thugs Of Hindostan director is given gag orders by the film’s producer Aditya Chopra.”

“Victor (director Vijay Krishna Acharya) has been told to keep absolutely quiet to all queries about the failure of Thugs Of Hindostan,” says a well-informed source.

Reacting to Aamir’s public self-flagellation, trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “If Aamir feels that the success of his films is due to his capability of choosing the right subject, then it’s but natural he should also take blame for the failure of Thugs as his judgement went wrong.”

Adds Atul Mohan (editor Complete Cinema), “Obviously…only Aamir is to be blamed. Whenever an Aamir Khan film becomes a hit, we hear stories that how Aamir has been involved right from scripting to execution to marketing to distribution. We get to see his dedication in videos released of his makeover to get into the character. So was he sleeping here? He has attained the tag of Mr. Perfectionist due to his detailed involvement in all departments. You may go wrong sometimes. People felt disappointed and cheated as they expected a better product here. Aamir should be respected for accepting his mistake for going wrong with this project.”

Adds Film & Trade Business analyst Girish Johar, “A film project is a collective effort but when a lead star of the stature of Aamir Khan is in the film, all eyes are on him. He has a humongous credibility which he brings onto his project. It is brought and created by him only as he is a huge star. Now taking the onus of the failure of Thugs Of Hindostan does not belittle him at all. It’s good that he has acknowledged it. No one can guarantee success but by this apology Aamir has maintained his legacy and credibility and his fans now look upon his next outing with equal zeal ahead.”

Didn’t realize Mahesh Bhatt was still so bitter with Aamir.

    Like

    • He really didn’t need to apologize. Why should he? This is ridiculous I feel. Of course, the one thing, personally, because he has held the fact that he got to work with AB so close to his heart, he could say that he feels bad that our combination didn’t work out for the audience.

Saket I didn’t know that was Mahesh. But it makes sense: There were rumors the man had completely lost interest in film-making during the HHRPK time and Aamir had to interfere to get the project done. I did’t see any rebuttal from Mahesh for this. Maybe he’s getting back at him here.

But it does raise some pertinent questions here. Was Aamir involved or was he content with the fact that after many years, he was playing a character devoid of any social implications and that he was enjoying his time with Bachchan? If one has worked in this film purely as an actor and nothing else, then really you don’t need to apologize. It happens.

      • I think he was apologizing because of massive expectations from his films. Rightly or wrongly, his films (and Aamir himself) carry this burden.

I think he was genuinely taken aback by the critical reception of the film. I’m sure he must have taken a look at the IMDb ratings as well.

It’s actually very nice (and sincere) of him to come out and apologize, even if it wasn’t strictly necessary.

        • Ditto. Some form of admittance of a mistake or apology was required.

It’s much more to do with saving some face too and Aamir probably knows with 1 film every 2 years he has to get it right 80% of the time. This is no Talaash or Mangal Pandey where financially the film was safe and critical consensus could be interpreted as middling – TOH on the whole is his Mela moment with people paying a premium and being promised a lot. Even his interview he acknowledged a minority that have liked it but in the main a huge probable 95%+ of the audience have rejected it. It must be so bad the feeling and rejection as the movie is only 3 weeks old in cinema and he’s already apologising !

        • Agree on all points. He raised expectations and he feels that he let the audience down. Mainly he is an experimentalist. He likes to experiment with different subjects and tries to take risks. Sometime the risk pays off and sometimes it does not. That two year gap is also good in a way.
Failure is like death or terminal illness. It shocks you first and then you come to terms with it and move on if one is not a Devdas type. Time is a healer.
I am seeing so many mahabharat stories on tv like Radhakrishn, Krishnavatar, Karnasangini which are all taking too many liberties with original story. I dont know how his MB series will be any different. He should not touch hindu religious books and land in controversies. He should go to hollywood, learn something and join some studio. Now he is like a frog in the well swimming in a limited space. He should expand his vision and learn to swim in some big oceans. He has to kill the actor in him and become a director. Acting and ghost directing dont go together as it blurs the lines. As an actor he has done it all and there is nothing more to experiment at his age. Age is not on his side.

        • Those TV serials just won’t have the budget, backing, rigour that a Netflix arrives with. Story wise, controversy wise especially the latter Aamir will side step by going with Netflix rather than indian cinema release. The bummer will be what kind of versions are ciculated for viewing.

Netflix is the current. There can surely be a happy middle ground whereby it’s on Netflix first and hopefully finds it’s audience and this itself promotes the chances of a film experience – going the film route is obviously proving to be an obstacle. But this is a sly, calculated move where really the brickbats will be reserved for Netflix – in any case BOI says Netflix is not popular anyway so Mahabharata will probably ride along quietly unnoticed!

In a nutshell this is a political move by Aamir to make his dreams come true with the least possible agro!

If yes, thank freaking hell that Mahabharata wasn’t ditched! This with Netflix all over it will be worth it. 30 years ago I was recording the tv shows on BBC2 on Saturday mornings on video, some 30 videos or so and now technology will do it all for me. The million dollar question is will he star in it? I actually hope not. Just produce it with completely new actors. Maybe squeeze out a movie too. 3 part series + 1 movie + 3 part series maybe?

If ToH was a boat, then Mahabharat will be a battle ship. Expectation will be humongous.

So far apart from Aamir we do not know who will captain this mammoth ship. Aamir has some experience with Satyamev Jayate series. But this is another ball game. So do not see this starting in another one year due to pre-production requirements.

It might go to floor in 2020 if Aamir devotes himself totally into this.

And the price we have to pay is pretty much irrelevant. If you already subscribe then it’s no additional cost. If you don’t, just time your trial and binge watch it for free!

This is a no brainer for Aamir. This is doing the Hollywood gig without actually doing it.

I was quite excited by the unlimited finance they can supply. Netflix is foreign studios. These companies only want market share. They hardly bring technology know how or new concepts which would enhance or assist in Indian vision.

YRF is actually very smart. They struck a safe deal with Aamir. I mean who can afford to have Aamir without paying a single penny and offering 70% profit. Aamir must have learnt from this.

I for sure know that SRK, Salman and Akshay are all asking for fixed remuneration from YRF now.

        • It’s not YRF are smart! They’ve lost money too for sure here! Nothing smart about that!

Ultimately one only signs a profit sharing deal if very confident it will pay off. Here it hasn’t, it’s not like the YRF studio insisted on it, more than likely Aamir did.

Maybe a safer model is some salary and rest profit share. In any case the much maligned Secret Superstar was a blockbuster profit share deal via China. So you win some, you lose some.

If we are judging success by tax receipts or remuneration we may as well just talk about SRK only. Forget about everyone else. He’s the richest in India! Everyone else is useless, pathetic and not good enough!

        • I do not think YRF has lost any money with ToH. If they do not refund for the losses, they are in neat profit. They sold everything before release and are holidaying now or focussing on reducing their budget for next films. because they know they will not find distributors now and they will have to distribute themselves.

On the other hand, Aamir is facing the mic, answering uncomfortable questions with a smile and hoping for a miracle in China. Hope is a brilliant medicine. It keeps the oxygen level high.

That something is done via theatrical business in a self distribution model. Someone like Krish can confirm. But I would guess YRF are sitting on losses and Aamir has no loss except not getting paid! And refunds if any are from YRF pocket as they are producer. It’s another thing that Aamir’s halo is bust, the cost of that is huge anyway.

No figures but according to this sub distributors are in profit, YRF and exhibitors have huge losses. There is no way YRF can be in money – if they were they’d refund for sure as this is a bigger PR debacle than Tubelight, Race 3 or JHMS. The only opportunity is China and that itself is not a done deal to be a success.

It was being reported that he had some issues over the script and was in talks and discussions about them for several months. But once YRF found out Aamir was interested, Hrithik was thrown out over-night.

Always found it dubious how quickly a perfectionist like Aamir accepted the project while Hrithik had reservations about it. Shows that even the best of them can make mistakes once in a while. He is human after all.

        • In the real world I agree. But nowadays big companies have a lot of reputational risk to take care of. I said the same during Tubelight and I’ll be even more profound here as YRF have really marketed this as a blockbuster and once in a lifetime film kind of deal. Plus the ticket prices increases leak adds a lot of anger to everyone in the system here. It future proofs any price discussions by refunds on films and in this case a lot more important than Tubelight. I would hope YRF do the right thing here and cover a proportion of the losses. But I think Master said this is trickier this time as it’s down to the sub distributors who will probably pocket the profits. So it would be harder for YRF who are already losing to decide to lose even more to appease exhibitors. They will hope China will bring something back. Other than that it sounds like a stalemate as no noise has been made about the crores of losses here like was with Tubelight, Race 3 and JHMS.

Aamir himself made huge statements like people will forget POC etc after TOH. There is HUGE disappointment here as it wasn’t expected. Other big losses – they were possible but here there is a different expectation.

With Tubelight all the excess profits sat with SKF so they could make the decisive decisions, here it’s down to the sub distributors! So good luck!

Aamir wouldn’t have done the same if it was his own production like Secret Superstar but here its YRF and he’s damaging a producer’s movie by talking about their release in China. This news is all over the media and am sure it’ll be raked by China media as well during TOH release which was impact its business. Very unprofessional and irresponsible statement from Aamir here! If he had to apologize (he don’t need to) he should do it after movie completes its run not when its still releasing at some places.

While Aamir’s acknowledgement of the debacle of Thugs of Hindostan is being seen as an act of courage by many, there are others who are wondering if the superstar has dug his own grave keeping in view that the mega-budgeted film will hit the screens in China next month, a market where Mr Perfectionist has a huge fan base.

    • Before anyone thinks this another anti-Aamir post, think logically. Even if you are the biggest star if you are not the producer, you shouldn’t talk about movie’s business before a release and hurting its business prospects in a country like China. Aamir did a huge mistake here. Now if TOH tanks, they’ll still say movie was bad whereas his statements might have killed it chances further.

      • Aamir did not say it is a bad film. He said that minority liked the film and majority did not. His statement will not damage the prospects as its debacle must have reached China already. His films never tanked like this and so no question of apology for them.
We do not know whether he said this after sitting with YRF and Victor. Without knowing these things, it is unfair to blame him.

There has to be sense for justification. Even for this you want to justify? There’s a video and he was at a cinestaan script contest event. He was asked this question by journos and he replied in his own way. So, you think he’ll call Adi (I don’t think he’s talking to Victor anymore) and said I want to apologize for making flop him, can I? Kuch bhi..

        • More prominent question at the script contest would have been –

Aamir, do you think TOH script would have won if it participated in this contest? Too bad.. no one asked it, Lol.

        • It was Aamir who was at the receiving end more than YRF. So what he said made sense. HE DID NOT SAY IT IS A BAD FILM.
Did he? Then where is the question of damage? Your hatred for aamir is so much that you dont want to hear anything good about him.

        • ” HE DID NOT SAY IT IS A BAD FILM”

Aamir apologizes for thugs of Hindustan. He said, we went wrong and apoligize for not able to entertain audience this time. That’s the headline statement everywhere. So, you want him to say its a BAD film in literal word but nothing else? Lol.

Yeah, I know some folks will not get my post.. will pass it as Aamir hater comment without reading it. I expected nothing better!

        • I am positive that Aamir would have talked with Aditya Chopra before going to the Cinestaan script contest evening. Obviously he would be asked about his film.

And why assume that Aamir is not talking to Victor anymore?

Some Chinese fans on twitter have written that they await the film. I feel they will give the film a fair chance.
Aamir never called his film ghatiya as alleged by some unscrupulous websites like biscoot tv( the idiotic name is self- explanatory), on YouTube. All Aamir said was that a minority were entertained but the majority were not and he was sorry about it. Fair enough.

On November 30, TOH releases in Turkey. Aamir’s Turkish fans too seem welcoming, same as Chinese fans. But of course it remains to be seen how they receive the film. Meanwhile on Instagram, Fatima has been posting pics through a week. She is holidaying in Turkey with her brother.

        • LS – the ‘foreign’ non indian diaspora markets might treat this differently for sure but I think that is more hope than logic. Let’s see, the base will be there in China for sure. One cannot compare this to D3 or BB2 as Aamir is a different beast in China now. It will at best be an exercise in learning what kind of stardom Aamir has there. I’m interested for that reason.

      • The main piece of the article is

We got in touch with film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi to know his views.

“The interesting thing about the China market is that even if a movie tanks there, it does great business, courtesy the sheer volume of the market. Even if a movie registers 10 per cent occupancy in China, it will end up doing great numbers compared to the India numbers of a film that has not done well,” Akshaye reasoned, thereby nullifying the theory that Aamir’s public apology will affect the film’s business in China.

Saying that Aamir’s act was “magnanimous” and “gracious,” Akshaye said that the actor deserved support from his fans in this scenario.

“I think it is really magnanimous of Aamir to have accepted the failure of Thugs of Hindostan in an era when every time there is a hit, stars hike their fee and when there is a flop, they blame somebody else. Aamir has taken it on the chin and I think it is extremely gracious,” he said.

“Somewhere, we need to be a little kind to him in this scenario because he has been delivering hit after hit for more than half a decade. Law of averages catches up with everyone. I don’t think it takes away anything from the stardom and credibility that Aamir Khan enjoys,” the film exhibitor added.

In a nutshell Aamir has given an honest response. If the film is liked it will work in China. The remote silence from YRF is itself telling enough. If thousands of Twitter trolls don’t impact India film business, you really think this interview will kill business in China even if it is Aamir talking?

Logically what can Aamir say? It’s a great film but misunderstood? Or no comment as its still releasing in China? Everything is catch 22 in the situation. China probably already knows what is coming given how quickly news moves. It’s fate in China is probably known already.

And I’ve already said to not release this in China, the risks outway the rewards massively. Bollywood has only recently tapped the market and it’s figurehead is sending his most disliked film with a huge windfall upfront payment. But it should be given a chance.

Aamir’s comments are candid, let it go viral. YRF are only milking any money from China here via Aamir anyway. So YRF are not in a position of strength here at all.

        • It’s not whether you are a hater or not. You’ve selected the piece of the article that questions the motives whereas the leading exhibitor embraced Aamir’s stance. The article basically explains the difference between china and India in market size. I am fully prepared with or without these comments that Chinese will not like this at all.

At the moment Chopra & Co are in hiding and Aamir is facing the music. He’s accepted the film’s a disaster and made it public. The film is still running everywhere globally – all that business will go down even more now?

Maybe the video will go viral in China and fans will cry! Who cares! The film’s fate is sealed it’s just a formality.

Ps. All your comments to each other are showing as responses to me. LOL. Stop abusing me, I don’t watch saas bahu serials or SRK/Salman films out of pleasure!
