  4. The villain of the movie, a giant that is half-human and half-bird, has wings made out of cellphones, and at one point in the trailer, growls: “Every person who owns a cellphone is a murderer.”

  5. For one, after the failure of Yash Raj Films’ action adventure Thugs of Hindostan, euphoria around the idea of the big-screen spectacle has taken a beating. “Thugs was the biggest offering of the year with Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan coming together, and the fact that it was a Diwali release from YRF, one of the biggest banners. This clearly proves audiences are in no mood to spend money on a bad film, no matter whom it comes from,” said a trade expert on condition of anonymity.

While YRF has recovered its investment for Thugs of Hindostan from ancillary rights, theatre owners have incurred losses as theatrical business did not match expectations, said the trade expert. YRF got exhibitors to pay a minimum guarantee of nearly ₹15-16 crore (per theatre) before release and the earnings of the film have resulted in a 60-70% loss for them.

“The buzz around 2.0 is not as high as Enthiran (the first instalment released in 2010),” said Rakesh Gowthaman, managing director of Vettri Theatres in Chennai.

“That film was high on star value with Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai coming together. Plus, Rajni was in the best phase of his career then whereas his recent films haven’t really fared well and his entry into politics hasn’t been accepted wholeheartedly either,” added the trade expert quoted above.

Clearly, 2.0’s content will have to speak for itself. The film’s trailer hasn’t really generated the buzz it should have, and, contrary to reports, the movie hasn’t made massive profits with the sale of ancillary rights before its release. While the satellite TV rights have gone to the Zee Network for ₹110 crore, about ₹80 crore has come from Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for distribution rights of the Hindi version.

Producers Lyca Productions are still in the process of selling distribution rights for other languages, but trade experts say that all put together, pre-release revenue will not exceed ₹250 crore. That leaves more than half the investment still to be recovered. The movie will not only have to cross at least ₹100 crore on day one but sustain thereafter to break-even.

And Surekha Sikri was the jaan of Baalikavadhu. She is fondly remembered as dadisa even now. You can watch some episodes of Saans on hotstar and Balikavadhu from Voot site where colors serials are shown. To sample how good and how versatile they are. Interesting insight into their culture, which is quite similar and quite different at the same time (cousin brother love affair and marriage still shocks me) to ours. India also did great serials back in the day, called golden era of television. But yhea, I cannot watch more then few seconds of current stuff. Trash TV. Has anyone watched Mirzapur on amazon? No insecure actor would have done that role when he himself can do any movie as leading man. This was right after Jaanbaaz too. Feroz Khan as creative director doesn’t get huge applauds but he didn’t do a harakiri by trying to play himself Dayavan in his own home production movie. Respect for that!

Dil Se is probably Rahman’s best to date. Rangeela and Taal hold very little value today, at least IMO. There’s probably one song from these two albums (Nahin Saamne) that I’d still want to listen.

Zubeidaa (Dheeme Dheeme, Mehdi Hai Rachne Waali), Takshak (Khamosh Raat, Rang De) and even 1947/Earth (Rut Aa Gayi Re, Dheemi Dheemi) are much better albums, IMO.

          Like

        • Saathiya is a rehash of Alai Payuthey with some terrible lyrics. I think that’s something unforgivable (shoehorning lyrics). Lagaan is probably the best out of the lot. Organic and rusty beats. I like Yun Hi Chala Chal from Swades quite a lot.

I quite liked JTYJN and Ghajini when the movies came out but don’t hold them in great esteem now. I do like Kaise Tum Mujhe Mil Gayi even today but that’s probably got more to do with the song picturization — not the song itself.

Pukar and Yuvraaj aren’t that great, IMO. There’s one album (Highway) that I’ve heard good things about, but have never given a listen. I need to watch the movie as well.

I even don’t mind some of JTHJ album though nothing really worthy. He has reduced volume and quality relative to past is less but barely anything is!

More than anything what is the last major film that delivered a truly good all round soundtrack? The only one that comes to my mind is Dabanng in 2010. Some cracking songs there.

        • I will point to Amit Trivedi’s body of work — Lootera and more recently, Manmarziyan. 2 Songs from Bhavesh Joshi are superb as well. I quite liked Andhadhun’s music as well. 3 of these albums have come in this year alone! Aaj Se Teri from Padman is a chartbuster too — again from this year.

He has done some great work overall — Dev D, Kai Po Che, Queen, Fitoor, Udta Punjab, Udaan, Aamir, Aisha, No One Killed Jessica, Ishaqzaade, Ek Main Aur Ek Tu, Ghanchakkar & Bombay Velvet!

Phew, that’s some list right there. In between he has some songs that are very good (Love You Zindagi from Dear Zindagi) but the overall album isn’t all that great. And if I count his MTV Coke Studio work as well, this list becomes really big.

        • ARR has not scored for a commercial biggie in Hindi for a while. His recent releases in Hindi (last 2 years) are mostly 1947 Partition, Tamaasha types and naturally would be tied to the fate of the BO and not chartbusters. I also stay away from the dubbed numbers as the translation is horrendous (the difference of 2.0 in Tamil vs Hindi or Saathiya for example). His straight Hindi films are brilliant and no one comes close IMO and I dare say in majority of music lovers case. He is busier now in Tamil scoring for massy commercial films with the likes of Rajni, Vijay and Ajith to reclaim lost footing in his home ground so to speak. He is also into production now (ARRived series on Youtube, 99 songs where he wrote the story and LeMusk which he is producing). He has become a full time businessman with non stop concerts and milking his brand (very similar to SRK). Coming back to his music, please speak for yourself when you say he is over rated. I am a South Indian and generally do not care for Hindi films and music at all. RDB is probably the only guy I will listen to and in the current crop Amit Trivedi is decent. Again speaking for myself, I have not seen a more complete versatile genius across languages, genres and a pan India phenomenon like ARR. I am a fan since 1992 when Roja first came and pulled the rug from under every musician across India including the almighty Illayaraja who is another genius. Yesterday, I was playing Tum Tak from Ranjhanaa on loop along with the Tamil song Bhoomi Bhoomi from Ratnam’s latest. Of course, he has hit a creative plateau from the 90s/early 2000s version, but I will still take ARR over any contemporary guy anyday. I think the ones that consider him overrated are in the minority anyway.

        • Incidentally Trivedi was inspired to become a musician after listening to Rahman’s Thiruda Thiruda, there is a youtube video where he analyzes that soundtrack which in 1994 was so ahead of its time. I do understand that kind/style of music is not for everyone. Thiruda Thiruda also happens to be my favorite ARR album, followed closely by Dil Se (the Tamil version Uyire is superior imho)

This superiority and ‘I’m the best’ attitude is the reason for the decline of Shahrukh as his fan(atics) do behave in the same manner despite Shahrukh’s box-office pull being at the continued downwards slope yet hailing him as ‘KING, BADSHAH AND BEST EVER’ despite the ‘obvious results!! Delusion can bring about the downfall to the bestest on their knees and it’s only the dawn of ‘realisation’ that they are past it which can help them cope with the ‘reality’ than ‘their continuous fixation with the past’!! Noone is infallible or invincible including Ram and Krishna; so rather than attaching too much importance to oneself, one should keep working towards one’s goal regardless of its success or failure as both would come sooner or later & are inevitable in life. Those who are stuck in past would pave way for the new ones as ‘now’ is the reality. And all this is true for ‘each & everyone’ irrespective of their exalted status as this is how life goes. So let’s be rational than fanatic which can diminish a lot of negativity in us.

But AA Films told exhibitors that they need to give KGF (upcoming Kannada film) 40% of the screens when it releases (it is clashing with Zero) AND to pay 10 lacs per theater as a minimum guarantee AND keep the ticket prices the same as Thugs AND reserve screens for some film called Cheat India, which is clashing with Manikarnika.

The exhibitors did not agree to anything, so then AA Films started dropping one condition after the other but the exhibitors still did not agree, which hampered the Advance Booking. Not really clear what the situation is right now and how many screens its getting

Anushka is a very good actress. This could be her biggest film.

‘2.0 is visual magic with a good universal message’

“#2Point0 -My rating 4.25/5. Enjoy. Final half hour attagasam. Visual magic with a good universal message. #SuperstarRajinikanth remains King. Evergreen! @rajinikanth @shankarshanmugh. Hatsoff @akshaykumar for all the makeup efforts and a powerful role. @iamAmyJackson is a breeze,” journalist and trade analyst Kaushik LM said via Twitter.

    ‘Thoroughly enjoyed 2.0’

Journalist and trade analyst Surendhar MK posted on Twitter, “#2point0: A BREATHTAKING AUDIO-VISUAL POWERHOUSE. Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Easily lives up to the reputation of being the most ambitious Indian motion picture ever. 25-min-long climax stadium sequence was jaw-dropping fun 🔥 🔥 @shankarshanmugh saar VERA LEVEL 🙏🙏”

    2.0: Quick take

Indianexpress.com’s Priyanka says, “Looks like an Akshay Kumar show. Rajinikanth said at an event recently that 2.0 is “Akshay’s film” and Thalaiva might be right if the first half of this mammoth film is anything to go by. 2.0 starts with the Crow Man in an intriguing and powerful sequence. What follows is the Crow Man snatching away every cellphone in the city. As he creates mayhem, the need for Chitti, the robot, is felt not only by the people in the film but also by the audience, which consists of mostly Rajinikanth fans. The face-off between Chitti and Crow Man is undoubtedly the most exciting sequence in the first half. The film looks superlative as far as the VFX is concerned but the story is yet to pick up pace. Rajinikanth in his scientist avatar doesn’t bring much excitement and Amy Jackson seems to have taken her role of a robot literally, passing every scene with a straight face.”

  26. And yet, despite the entry of Chitti (Rajinikanth), the film seems to be missing a je ne sais quoi. We get an extravagant clash between Chitti and the giant bird, but that’s all. Unlike its predecessor, the film doesn’t find a way to inject humour and inventiveness into the proceedings. Barring a reference to the famous dialogue from Nayakan, the lines are hardly memorable, and the characters pretty functional. Even the sub-plot involving Dhirendra Bhora (Sudhanshu Pandey), the son of the first film’s villain, Dr Bhora, is underdeveloped.

It is only with the entry of 2.0, which happens a little late than it should have, that the film gets some much-needed energy. As he did in the first film, Rajinikanth digs into this role with his inimitable style and performs with relish. There is even a punch line that he utters after Nila tells him that he is no longer the No 1, that sends fans into a tizzy. Akshay Kumar is also a solid presence as the antagonist whose heart is in the right place. And the climactic battle between 2.0 and Pakshiraja ensures that we get the bangs we deserved for our bucks. Even though some of the surprises in this segment have been let out in the trailer, Shankar manages to pack in a cute, little surprise that’s 3.0 aka Kutti. If only had he found a way to get these two characters into his plot earlier, 2.0 would have soared.

    • This seems to be hitting the middle ground. IF this does not work as good ‘masala’ for the masses, the BO results will turn out to be average. In short, it may fail to make the masala fans ’emotional’ …

      **********************

“The plot of 2.0 feels familiar; in fact too familiar. There is no mystery in the supernatural occurrences that we see on screen, and for the entire first half, we are forced to wait for the mandatory flashback involving Pakshirajan (Akshay Kumar), the ornithologist who is the old man who we saw at the start of the film. Even the flashback doesn’t hit us hard emotionally the way similar episodes in the director’s Indian and Gentleman made us feel. There is a distinct sense of just going through the motions in the first half. But, by now, plot is not what we go to Shankar’s films for these days. It is the grand canvas in which this director mounts his oft-told stories that makes us look forward to his films. And in 2.0, we get spectacle that is satisfying. In the first half, we get some striking visuals – mobile phones crawling on the road, a forest of glowing phones, a monstrous bird that crackles with energy. There are also visual nods to Hollywood films like Aliens, Terminator 2 and even Ghostbusters.”

  27. The VFX is beyond excellent and you can only enjoy it in 3D. The first half moves incredibly fast but be prepared to get super confused. There are scenes where the phones force a man to swallow them and then burst inside his body. That’s murder number 1! Sorry for the spoilers (NOT). Chitti’s entry is not as dramatic and Massy as I’d hoped. What saves this incredibly disappointing and confusing first half is the bit before the interval. You’ll know when you watch it. Hopefully, the film will get interesting now! Stay tuned with us for the complete review of 2.0 here.”

  37. When long-winding terms and phrases are thrown at us, it feels authentic because you don’t know. While the film has its share of explanations, too many, they are dumbed down, to reach the masses I presume. Thus, it becomes more fantasy than fiction. But the on-screen opulence makes up for it. 2.0’s VFX has applaudable detail in the close-up shots — one can almost see the dimension of the phones that mash into bigger forms and objects.

Rip off the visual grandeur and the film is lost. The frames demand to be seen on a humongous screen, and if possible in 3D. You get to see a sci-fi version of Rajinikanth’s introduction card in 3D (It was cooler than Sivaji). I was sold right there. With our industries battling a bloody war with piracy, I think Shankar has won this round.

  40. Verdict

The story of 2.0 revolves around mobiles and its networks which is killing birds which in turn has become a threat to humanity. Writer and Director Shankar have to be applauded for making such a relevant story into a movie with the Superstar. He succeeded in conceiving an interesting plot but failed in engaging the audience with the screenplay. The first half of the movie takes to set the plot up and second half bores for a lot of time. When everyone thinks that the movie is finished, the story begins again and this time it gives us ticket worthy entertainment. The VFX of Chitti character seems like an animated character in the long shots of introduction scenes. To sum up, a need of the hour story made with two superstars of Indian cinema by a visionary director is what brings people to theatres and they give us a film to watch happily this weekend.

As I have said before, neither Race 3 nor ToH BO collections were more than 130 cr nett range. I doubt if 2.0 will go much beyond this range by the end of its run, which will be 10-15 days.

Watching 2.0 back-to-back – first, the 6 am Tamil show with die-hard Rajini fans at Mumbai’s Aurora cinema and then in Hindi – was an unforgettable experience. The film has loads and loads of entertainment, and an excellent social message too, and doesn’t bore even for a nanosecond! There’s no forced timepass or humour or even obstructing songs in this 150 minute long fare and the focus is solely on the story. Rajinikanth as expected is outstanding to say the least. In the second half, he’s an absolute riot and not just fans, even non-fans are bound to cheer for him. Akshay Kumar has limited screen time but his menacing looks and terrific performance is something to watch out for. He has some crucial sequences in the second half where he steals the show. Amy Jackson is the surprise package of the film and is highly entertaining. VFX is never before seen in an Indian film and it’s bound to leave viewers spellbound. Finally, director Shankar deserves all the praise. He knows the pulse of the audiences and gives them a film which is entertaining, massy and also touching. Bollywood has so much to learn from these excellent South directors. S S Rajamouli proved it with Baahubali and now Shankar just confirms it! All in all, 2.0 is the pride of India and missing it is a crime!

2.0 (Hindi) has taken a good start with morning occupancy of 35-40%. It is being driven by single screens and mid level multiplexes. The high end multiplexes are not collecting as they should be in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkatta. Hyderabad and Bangalore are hardly screening the Hindi version.

The higher ends have not opened too well probably because of the dubbed factor and the Rajnikant type of gimmicks have few takers at the high end multiplexes. Mumbai city will still be good as the single screens are good and collections in Thane are good. Delhi NCR belt will be depending on improvement through the day and this area has a large concentrate of high ends. UP has opened well though.

The late advance may have affected collections at the big multiplexes but it is very minimal affect as the current audience makes the big difference.

If we take it as a dubbed film the South then these numbers are very good as these films hardly have a market outside the Bahubali films. But 2.0 is not the regular dubbed film where the Hindi markets do not matter as this film needs the Hindi markets to do good business due to the film going over budget.

2.0 is only the fourth South dubbed film to open well in Hindi markets after Humse Hai Muqabla (1995), Hindustani (1996) and Bahubali – The Conclusion (2017). The last named is one of biggest openers ever be it dubbed or outright films. The director of 2.0 had also directed Humse Hai Muqabla and Hindustani so has 3 of the 4 biggest south dubbed openers in Hindi markets.

The bigger multiplexes could have been better but its still a solid start and if 2.0 can hold collections at these levels over the the extended weekend it is going to come out with a strong weekend.

    • The real film kicks in post-interval, with the appearance of Akshay’s Pakshiraja, a good man turned bad, out of fear and justifiable anger. The Bird Man will do anything to save his feathery friends, even if it means killing and smashing his way through buildings and cell towers and people who like their hand-sets. Akshay brings some much-required energy to the movie, as well as some moving moments, before he and his glittery gold eyes get encased in metal. By then it’s just a question of how much Shankar will crank it up in the climax. He does, but somehow, none of it sticks after an initial shock-and-awe flash.

I’ve always pointed make it a diverse blog with different stars and don’t gang up on minority members like Alex or so. Eventually you just ended having Aamir fans and blog seems good but defeats the purpose of Bollywood movie blog.

I’ve pointed out multiple times that it needs better moderation and Satyam got busy from few years and he can’t devote enough time. Munna alone can’t be 24/7. Earlier it would be fun discussing long comments with Satyam & co and great discussion All we have now are fans and then club others as fans too. Just slotting is happening and fighting over it. Marcus has not seen me during any Aamir movie except TOH and talks as if he knows everything about me. Either ways, the main reason for me reduce frequency is that good comments are way too less and no moderation. Without that it becomes futile to participate in any good discussion.

Naveen is only challenging that from what I see. The rest after is just handbags!

Everyone calm down. Take a leaf out of Aamir’s book. Bitch on your own film after 3 weeks of release. If it impacts your life all these fights than you need a break.

Now hug it out like Karan Arjun before munna and co delete your fight, just like Aamir fans hitting delete button on TOH. Deep down such pettiness before Xmas, tut tut.

I don’t think you’re right here, just my opinion. Krish said whatever, agree or disagree it’s just numbers. End there. No real need to call Krish an idiot.

There are X number of people I don’t like here but bottom line if I met them today I will have a laugh and coffee with them. The rest is just handbags.

On the rest I maintain my stance that abuse stars but not each other. If one infers abuse of star as a slight on oneself then apologies in advance. It’s not. I don’t like srk or salman NOT because I don’t like Livewire or Master. If I had to choose good fortune on people I will pick people here whom I don’t like over my favourite star. That’s just my opinion. I prefer Naveen to Aamir because I know Naveen on a blog for 10 years.

There is just no excuse for calling someone an idiot or worse. The same point can be made without denigrating another person. In other words, attack the argument — not the person who made it.

I personally have no issues with Marcus, and I hope he doesn’t have any with me. Even if he does, after reading this post, I’d be ok with it.

I’d rather we all discuss films passionately, fiercely but stay within limits of decency than have a free for all mudslinging contest. That’s a complete put-off for most people.

The other option is to ignore provocative statements. But that’s too difficult to do on a discussion forum, especially when you consider the fact that only the most passionate fans/cine-lovers frequent it in the first place.

  66. My 2.0 3D Hindi Review

    2.0 scores despite its flaws!!

2.0 is not a 5/5 movie. Thats something which cannot be given to any movie. It’s not ICSE Maths exam.

    2.0 has its flaws.

The VFX are not consistent through out the length of the movie. You can see few cracks but they are very good in important scenes. And there are many such scenes much more than any other hollywood movie of the same duration and VFX holds really well in those.

2.0 is also not a drama based movie. There are dialogs but just enough to communicate. It is not the typical long dialog emotional entertainer. Such movies does very well if the emotions connect.

2.0 does not belong to any star. There are few starry moments for the fans but just too few.

2.0 does not have any superhit songs. In fact there are no songs at all in first half and in second half songs are used in background.

2.0 doesn’t has a long story to tell. Like any superhero movie it just sits on a plot of good vs evil. Only thing is that it becomes a bit fuzzy on who is evil and who is good.

So if 2.0 is not emotionally stirring, lacks drama, not a star based cinema…is it doomed?
It would have for sure if any other director had commanded the ship.

But Shankar is no ordinary director and he is the real hero of 2.0.

2.0 is a visually stirring movie aided by strong direction, music and technical craftsmanship like cinematography, sound design, background music, camerawork, etc.

It takes about 5 minutes to get comfortable with the narrative style of Shankar. He is not the Rajamouli or Hirani who can ease you from first frame. He doesn’t bring his vision to you. He wants us to come to his vision. And he comes straight to the point. I needed to let myself go to appreciate the movie.

2.0 is an AI movie and goes a lot into technicalities. It shows AI Labs, museum, robotics, physics, etc. It also tries to tell how we as human has got so much involved with technology that we do not care for other species at all. We are like living in a virtual world.

We would have seen forwards on whatsapp about the family using laptops and phones and hardly talking to each other. 2.0 shakes you up more than any whatsapp forwards would. It tries to awaken the human conscience without getting preachy.

Akshay is in an unforgettable role. 2.0 justifies his villainous act to the extent that one starts r for rooting. His virtues ultimately brings him down in what could easily be one of the greatest villain in indian story after Raavan. His screen presence is awesome and evokes fear.

Rajnikant is in total control of the movie. I now understand why Aamir rejected his role saying he cannot visualise anyone other than Rajni pulling the role(s). If not for Rajni…Akshay would have walked away as hero. But it is Rajni’s charisma and acting which makes him keep the balance intact and overall tilt in his favour in an otherwise a strong role that Akshay has.

Amy Jackson surprisingly has lengthier role and is in more frames than Akshay Kumar. She looks pretty and her role is apt for her where she doesn’t have to emote.

Background score is an ace. In fact in few crucial scenes i enjoyed background score more than the actors.

Shankar’s direction is extra ordinary. He is a Tamilian and even in a movie of this scale he doesn’t hide the roots via his depiction. Movie is shot in the streets of Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. This brings a different connectivity and i was able to enter his world.

This is a Tamil double delight Masala Dosa followed by curd rice and a punjabi lassi.

    Rating 4/5 ****

I am still bewildered by OTT reaction to the movie as if this is an all time classic. It is not. I don’t think any of Shankar’s film will be called classic, but they are massy for sure. 2.0 is a good one time watch. Was this movie ever meant to be more?

Though how can someone be fanatic of a movie star other than Amitabh and Rajnikant is beyond me. Aside from work and career stuff that is personal choice issue, good movies, bad movies, Aamir I like for his water foundation work. Salman for his beinghuman foundation. SRK hasn’t done any philanthrophy of note or made difference to society that comes to my mind. Mostly I feel sorry for him for losing his parents so early in life. All three should semi-retire and do good work for society and take age appropriate roles and promote and mentor fresher talents of the country. On side note: has anyone watched Mirzapur? Some basic guidelines and punishments can be reiterated and as we all know what that would be we know the repurcussions. Permanent bans are unfair. If I read my comments from NG I would be embarrassed and apologising to many people. Some context and judgement should be applied. But here’s the thing — he gave Kisna, one of the worst films ever made, a glowing review.

Sidenote: he was assisting Ghai at the time.

That tells you all about Mr. Sen (and also the nature of film criticism in Bollywood).

      • The one that disgraced him the most was when he rated a 2* to 3 Idiots and issued a lengthy paragraph a week later explaining the reason for his rating. Of course he had a few gems earlier too, a 2* for Sarkar being one of them. Even Chris Nolan wasn’t spared when he spewed rubbish against Inception on twitter and then gave a 4* to an inferior considered Interstellar four years later to compensate. Just like he gave a 4* to an inferior PK after dissing 3 Idiots.

          PK – 4
          Dhoom 3 – 1.5

Pointing out TOH ratings is pointless as majority of critics have given it low.

For 3 Idiots, he repeated multiple times that Hirani has higher standard to be judged after making best movie of this decade (he’s taking about Munnabhai’s).

Either ways now even this will be taken as am supported of Raja Sen when I hardly read his reviews.

After more than four decades and eight movies, actor Sylvester Stallone says he is finally hanging up his Rocky gloves. In a video he shared on Instagram Wednesday, the 72-year-old actor said he was ready to walk away from playing the iconic character, referring to his latest appearance in the recently released Creed II as his “last rodeo.” “I thought Rocky was over in 2006 and I was very happy with that,” he said in the video. “And then all of a sudden this young man presented himself and the whole story changed,” he added, pointing to his Creed co-star Michael B Jordan.
“It went on to a new generation, new problems, new adventures.”

The Creed films are a continuation of the Rocky story, following the retired champ as he faces up to middle age and trains a new protege.

But, for ‘2.0’, the fans have to wait as the distributor chose not to reveal the hourly premiere tracking. So, the gross total figure from Wednesday premieres and day 1 will be out on Friday in the evening as per India’s time. But, with the information available from the hourly tracking numbers of Thursday, one would be left wondering, what’s happening with ‘2.0’ in the US? The movie has posted around $284 K by 9 p.m. EST on Thursday. If we compare it with ‘Baahubali 2’, the pre-booking collections of ‘Baahubali 2’ crossed 1.7 Million already by this time. For a final collection, we need to wait till Friday evening when the figures from Wednesday premieres and day one (Thursday) combined figures will be out. However, it is very clear that 2.0 is going nowhere near ‘Baahubali 2’ that has posted mammoth numbers by collecting $4.5 million from the premieres and day one and $20 million in its lifetime run in the US sector. The figures from the US are quite disturbing and comparatively, the India’s costliest movie is going really slow than expected. Let’s wait and see if it grows by the day or will maintain the same slow pace.

Movie Review: ‘2.0’ Fails on the Science, But Stuns on Imagery

A robot is an apt metaphor for an Indian superstar. It operates on programmed instructions; it can do no wrong. It cannot be persuaded or defeated. And more importantly, it doesn’t have to emote. The robot Chitti, imagined by filmmaker S. Shankar, can do all this and more – everything, in fact. It also looks like Rajnikanth.

At some point, Shankar must have thought, “Enough! What can be more Rajnikanth than Rajnikanth himself?” How about two Rajnikanths? Especially when the second is an automaton capable of adjectives-fail-me stunts – say, mutating into numerous rifle-holding robots curled to form a football, shooting relentlessly, transforming into miniature versions flying on pigeons, or becoming a cage that traps a monster. Chitti, in the words of millennials, is “next level”.

All of this makes perfect sense. This conceit allows Shankar to enjoy and elevate the Rajnikanth myth, without compromising the story’s plausibility. Whenever something nutty happens in these movies – the recently released 2.0 or its “spiritual” predecessor, Enthiran – you can pacify the movie nerd in you by saying, “Oh, it’s because of the robot.” Well played, Shankar.

2.0 has another superstar, Akshay Kumar, playing an ornithologist who becomes, well, birdbrained. His name says it all: Pakshirajan. (How are we doing on the subtlety meter, Mr Shankar?) 2.0 rests on a simple – one rehashed across filmmaking cultures and ages. A city in danger, a vicious creature on the loose, a hero who rises and rescues.

But in a Rajnikanth-starrer science fiction actioner, that too in 3D, the story is the last thing that people care for. Shankar tries, though. He first builds intrigue. The film opens with an unsettling image – as scores of birds fill the early morning sky, a man hangs himself from a cellphone tower. From the next day, people’s phones start flying from their hands. Nobody knows why. The antagonist, Dr Pakshirajan, isn’t introduced in the first half. But you also get the sense that Shankar is trying too hard. There are several scenes repeating the same information, often employing the same mechanics, that treat you like an inattentive teenager.

Then there’s the science. For a film centred on the harmful effects of cellphone radiations, 2.0 isn’t interested in technology – in its complexities and complications, in its infuriating and unfortunate contradictions. The adverse effects of cellphones is a hotly debated, and contentious, topic. Studies haven’t been able to pin down whether cellphone radiation is dangerous. But 2.0 can’t care less, nor has the patience to read between the lines, for it is busy giving loud moral spiels on the perils of technology.

But that isn’t even the most annoying part. What is really frustrating about 2.0 is that it constantly tries to create an impression that it knows enough and, by that extension, cares. It does so by using keywords – the film is filled with references to “photon synthesiser”, “electromagnetic radiation”, “micro photon” – which feel hollow because, beyond word-dropping, there’s scarce evidence of any scientific engagement in this movie. Take, for example, a scene where Pakshirajan cites a crucial report to a telecom bigwig, trying to make him realise the weight of the problem. That report, he says, is written by a “famous Russian scientist, Frank Baranowski”. No such man exists. This is just one of the several instances where this film wilfully misleads its audience. This is dishonest and disingenuous filmmaking, which is all the more harmful because it wears the garb of science to sound morally conscious.

And yet, 2.0 also features stunning images – so captivating that they almost exist outside the film. Most Indian movies, even the much publicised ‘mass-ey’ fares, lack a distinct visual language, exemplifying an utter lack of imagination. But 2.0 consistently soars. The premise of the film – the dangers of cellphones – doesn’t automatically lend to riveting cinematography, but Shankar knows how to make images sing, turning them into events that leave you enchanted.

At the start of the film, for instance, we find out that cellphones are being used by a mysterious force. But we soon see how. Thousands of them lie scattered on an isolated highway, the night only illuminated by the light from their screens. Then they come to life, as they realign themselves, like the curl of a sea storm, and literally start flowing towards the city. There, they cover the walls, floors and ceilings of perpetrators (the ministers and the owners of telecom companies). In another scene, they light up an entire forest – they cover and adorn the trees; some on the ground slowly move forward, rustling leaves in the process. Some sequences later, the cellphones stick together to form a ginormous bird – just the scale of original thought, and its intended spectacle, is fascinating. And so is the finest bit of the film: its climax, a big action set-piece, which turns weirder by the second (where 2.0 becomes whatever he wants: a shooting football, a cage, a magnetic device). Shankar and cinematographer Nirav Shah often shoot scenes close from the ground or from a top angle, effectively conveying the sense of dread.

In most of these scenes, not a single dialogue is said. Shankar seems to be at home here, away from the winding by-lanes of science. Which is why 2.0 is such a dichotomous experience, as it feels like watching two separate movies: one disappoints you, the other floors you. The film’s sloppiness isn’t mitigated by its leads either. Kumar is thoroughly unconvincing as the ornithologist-turned-activist, upping his earnest ante to eye-rolling levels, and ludicrous as the city-destroying monster. Rajinikanth, too, cast in a staple role, adds nothing new.

But all disappointments related to multi-starrers can be both allayed and answered by a simple question, “What did you expect?” What did you expect indeed – a statement of resignation that says as much about our films as it does about us.

    Friday 30 November 2018 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) has had a good opening day with collections of around 20 crore nett. This is despite the big multiplexes not performing upto the mark but the film has done very well at other multiplexes and single screens.

The Akshay Kumar factor has worked for the film as North India has shown good collections with Delhi / UP at 4.75-5 crore nett East Punjab at 1.90 crore nett. East India has fared very well with Bihar collecting around 1.25 crore nett. The mass pockets in India have shown very strong collections with some places not too far off the figures of Thugs Of Hindostan. The ratios where dubbed films tend to struggle are very good be it Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan or Bihar. Gujarat is a little below the mark and could have been better.

This has all come without South where the collections are only from Marathawada. So in real terms the collections are 22-23 crore nett if it this was releasd like a normal Hindi film..

Whole of south India was watching B2 in their local language and yet Hindi collections just went and did 515 crores. Combing South languages Nett takes the all India collections over 1100 crores. If it was released as just Hindi movie without missing out so much business from Southern languages – imagine the business would have been easily over 600 or 650 or even 700 crores(from real 1100 crores) which after GST would be over 750 to 800 crores. Notably, 2.0 may have failed to beat the Baahubali 2 first-day record across the globe, but it has outperformed the business of SS Rajamouli’s flick, which had raked in around Rs 11 crore.

Extraordinary opening and then extraordinary trending.

        • One thing to remember is that this is a Tamil movie and not a telugu movie so forget bahubali it wont do those ntr kind of numbers also in AP…that will always keep the grosses down…the way I see it TN, karnataka and kerala are outstanding, AP has opened well but not as good as the price it needs to recoup..the disappointment is hindi circuit..for whatever the reason the high end multiplex didnt turn up..my own guess is it is due to the working day and it will turn around from tomorrow…today it is running 15 percent less than yesterday as of now..they need to reschedule the programming to have more 3D shows..2D is practically empty…

        • This 3D stuff is ok . But it is better if films are made for ordinary screens so that they can get more footfalls.

      • 2.0 was eying the second biggest opening and preferably a 100+ Cr gross All india. It is for sure the second biggest opening of all time after BB2. 100 Cr gross or not needs to be awaited.

  102. The great kadels and jaiswals are throwing 61 cr nett ( 20 cr hindi + 40 cr rest) for 2.0 day one. That is 50% of BB2’s day one nett figure.

Rajamouli’s grin has now doubled … Always preferred Hyd over Chennai.

    • Btw, 60 cr all india nett implies 77-78 cr all india gross – not even 80% of the pre-release target of 2.0 opening of 100 cr day one.

BB2 day one was over 150 cr gross (double of 2.0).

    • Also ToH being a 250 cr film did 52 cr all india nett on day one, while 2.0 being a 550 cr film has done just 10 cr more than ToH???

      Chooooooo saaaaaad !

  104. Another movie can’t break BB2 nett first day. What an event film was BB2. It was like Sholay of this century. At the beginning of this year some were predicting TOH and 2.0 have a great chance to eclipse BB2. TOH bit the dust miserably shattering the myth of perfectionist Aamir Khan . Now 2.0 can’t even reach close to 510 Crore net of Hindi and 1100 Crore All India Nett. I can’t visualise any movie in next 5 years to break BB2 records in India. As all Khans are declining, none in the present crop of youngsters have the potential to leapfrog BB2 in near future. Aamir had s chance in TOH but he squandered it with a lame script sense and licking his badly bruised wounds. May be another gem from Rajamouli will eclipse BB2.

    • Agree. Even Rajamouli cant replicate that success. I want that record to remain safe and not be diminished even by its creator.

    • Neither ToH nor 2.0 could ’emotionally’ connect with masala audience. Hence the under-performance. Same was the case with Tubelight. 2.0 will trend better than the other two, coz Rajni fans are not feeling alienated. Whereas, Aamir’s non-straight character alienated a major chunk of his audience, just like Salman’s audience felt with Tubelight. Of course, the difference in acting by the stars in ToH and TL is as wide as between heaven and hell, but thats another story.

      • When Aamir ‘apologized’ about not getting ToH right, I can bet that he was referring to his Firangi character (which he had assumed wud work v well). He refused to elaborate more about that on a public platform (he stressed on that twice when reporters persisted). But he talked about China release as if that may not matter much with a more mature … sorry i meant non-masala audience.
