  2. Seems Hindi has disappointed. Master predicted 27 or 28, I went big at 35. The poor distribution will have dented a bit but overall this doesn’t seem to have the steam to beat Akshay’s top grosser. 20Cr is pretty much average, I won’t comment on other regions as don’t have the knowledge – default to Krish. Delays really hurt a film.

@Saket are you going to share your numbers?

It’s a separate thing that the reviews and response is better it seems. I’m going to continue my bad luck predictions and go big with Zero! I’ll get one right eventually! Zero day 1 will be 35Cr+.

    • I think 2 things affected it jay..one was people didnt turn out for the 2D screens..3D were having good occupancy and 2D were running only at 25 percent..secondly the Thursday release I think didnt help at the high end multiplex. The advances of course opened late at cities and dented it..the smaller towns and cities have actually done quite well..20 cr is underpar definitely as it looked like opening to 30cr a week back..wom seems good to decent though but it needs more than just a weekend number

      • For me single biggest factor is delay. If this arrived on time everything would be better off. Cost lower, expectations higher, a clean release and all that together would just add up to a better result. 3D doing better is a good thing but I wonder how much of that can be changed scheduling wise now. WOM might give it a decent weekend but now it’s needing a good second week too. Reviews suggest a one time watch and experience, so I’d be surprised if Hindi goes above 150Cr now. 4 day weekend is struggling for 100Cr already…film needed some big 20’s here but only Sunday mught give that big day of 30+.

  4. My point was Aamir was the only actor who had a realistic chance to eclipse BB2 as he was the first to break 100,200,300 crore barriers in Hindi film industry. As he is mid 50s, TOH was the last chance for him to break BB2 and bow out on a high. As he usually takes 2 to 3 years to make a movie, by the time his next movie comes he will be around 56. As for as Salman, Shah Rukh, Akshay, Hrithk and younger stars are concerned, they are fighting for 2nd place behind Aamir. As the undisputed crowdpuller and maker of exceptionally varied films, Aamir was the only one who had a realistic chance to get past BB2. Now it is impossible in near future for anyone to touch BB2.

    Like

    • I do not think BB2 was ever within reach for anyone. It’s not just the opening but the way it got accepted and hence the way it trended. Those were outrageous numbers.

So any movie that claims to aim for BB2 numbers before its release will get disappointed.

    • He is not interested anymore. His next projects in the pipeline are Netflix web-series on Mahabharata in 7 parts (no BO accounting for this one!) and a possible Forest Gump remake which isnt BB material.

As I said, he miscalculated the impact of Firangi’s grey character against masala expectations and took responsibility of that. No one forced him to do ToH, was HIS decision and he can live with it (and so can his fans). Its silly guyz like Salman who cant deal with their wounds and publicly blame and humiliate their pawns like Remo or Kabir.

He came back and hurled abuses at me without any provocation from my side at all … and finally when talked about the film it turned out that he had nothing much to say! Such misdirected anger comes from deep insecurity and frustration from within – so guyz like Salman needs to relax. Coz no one takes their shit so seriously …. its like tuteja’s gossip writing – does not matter.

But both are successful without comparing how many crores their movies do. Aamir’s does more but then he does far less work and spends years making movies. Having this debate between you two is childish. Toh was badly made and 2.0 maybe didn’t work in North. I hope both movies recover cost for sake of producers. Naveen, just ignore and let it go.

Ranbir himself is officially sitting on a higher grosser than Salman already. If Zero fails I already imagine upteen articles writing off these 3 but one bad film is not enough. Aamir will be back IMO. Salman too. SRK is sitting on a hit with Zero me thinks. But even that is no guarantee. Youtube hits mean nothing, day 1 determines a lot now.

Bahubali was a big movie, mounted on great script and story telling. The latter part hindi cinema/yrf missed. They could have instead made 5 or 10 great small movies with greater return on investment. Greed is horrible thing.

        • I said a lot during BB2 times that I expect many big budgeted disasters post BB2. I certainly expected TOH to be safe as I placed a massive premium on Aamir Khan. But these Bollywood folk haven’t learnt for many years. Even 2.0 could have been safe if vfx was on time, no delays. Professionalism is a huge cost here. These 2 films TOH and 2.0 had the time to correct their scripts post BB2 and costs.

Seriously Bhansali and Hirani deserve some credit. The former continues to make good on big budgeted films, the latter is making good on scripts translating into audience liking his films.

The small films get an A* this year.
Biggest films are on track for very average performance saved by unexpected Padmaavat and Sanju success, unless Zero fires up and delivers huge.

  5. Worldwide 2000 Cr of Dangal & 1800 Cr of BB2 was always out of reach. So is the domestic 1200 Cr of BB2 in all formats. The only aim for 2.0 is to surpass the domestic gross collections of Dangal & BB1 in all formats, which were a little over 500 Cr, 2-3 years ago. 2.0 has almost double the ticket rates than those films so perhaps it should fancy its chances.

    Like

    • Not sure if such targets mean anything after Dangal and BB2’s worldwide run. The official ToH ww gross is 255 cr now (same as Sarkar’s). But 100m from china can take that total to a cool 1000 cr gross. However, it will still remain a flop in india.

As for 2.0, it needs 375 cr ‘share’ to avoid losses for distributors – impossible in current scenario. Even TN may not sustain from Monday ….

‘Firangi In Engleeshthan’ – Cracking the TOH Code!

Some fans in this blog have talked about Amitabh in TOH and how its a tribute to his peak imagery that has been lost in time. A few Aamir fans have said Firangi is a ‘fun’ character and that Aamir had a ball doing this. There is no doubt that he did, not at least to those who has actually seen this film. But thats not all!

I have loved this character (seen it 2 times in theatres already and will eagerly wait for it to some on netflix/prime for more viewings). Its not that you can resist laughing WITH him and AT him, the ‘duplicity’ in this double-crossing ‘thug’ quite amusingly represents Aamir in Bollywood over last 20 years. For every Sarfarosh he has always backtracked with a Mela. There was MP following Lagaan, Fanaa after RDB, Ghajini after TZP, DG after 3I (!), D3 after Talaash and son and so forth. After he reached a crescendo with Dangal’s success all over, he selected to do TOH with YRF/Acharya gang! In short, he has been double-crossing his different set of audience all through these years and everyone had accepted it passively. Till TOH released …

There is an introductory scene of Firangi, after double crossing a maharaja, a bunch of thugs and then the brits (with a grandma dying story) he proudly goes off sitting on a donkey (that he proudly calls his master – a dethroned Nawab) wearing a ridiculous hat and a pair of red goggles. The scene is gleefully edited with Firangi’s donkey taking one step forward, then one step backward. Its a hilarious representation with an apt bgm … and is more allegorical than Amitabh’s physically impressive swashbuckling gig at 75.

And its not done in a way to demean anyone. Its much more self-deprecating humor than Mera Naam Joker or Kaagaz Ke Phool. At one point his reluctant side-kick tells him that either he is ‘mahaan’ or a ‘chutiya’. Firangi coolly retorts back claiming he is a ‘mahaan chutiya’. He literally kills the film by winking at his audience for 3 fun-filled hours. And during my second viewing I felt that showing a mirror to all his diverse audience was perhaps the primary reason behind such extreme backlash uniformly from all quarters.

If you revisit the film, once Khdabaksh dies (apparently) and passes the amulet to Firangi, he is just using his duplicity to help out in the cause. Its a devious Machiavellian way to get to the target. He just appears to be helping the brits. At least for me, thats the highlight of the film! [ And I will add this bit. Both of Aamir’s characters in SS and TOH are similar in the fact that both come across ‘non-hero’ like (even repulsive to some extent by traition) but actually helps out in the cause more than anyone else. So in that way SS and TOH form a ‘couple’. This maybe one focal reason why both films have been rejected in India. We perhaps cant consume such characters in a mass scale commercial entertainer. Or maybe all the message-oriented films have made it impossible for him to be acceptable in a non-straight role in India? ]

After his usual berayal, Firangi asked Khudabaksh to not sacrifice himself. In fact he explicitly states that he first betrayed him and then saved his life. So they are now quits as per him. He has no qualms or guilt regarding Khudabaksh sacrificing himself. But since Khudabaksh requests him to save Zafira, he obliges cause he perhaps felt responsible for putting her in danger with his betrayal. Once he saves her, he wants to leave the thugs and move on. But has a change of heart when the brits attack their hideout. Why shud he suddenly become a shahenshah like messiah as expected in a regular masala movie? It makes no sense.

However, once he has a change of heart he takes Zafira to Surraiya and together they plot to kill clyve during dussehra festivities. But when he finds out that Khudabaksh is alive he pretends to side with brits so that he can give them an advantage which he clearly explains later. When the time comes he saves Khudabaksh and the thugs finally defeat the brits. Once that job is done, he wants to move on because he has another dream to fulfill- Firangi in Engleeshthan! So no surprise that he is planning MB with Netflix next.

In some pop-philosophy thrown in TOH, he did what it took to be ‘alive’ given his circumstances. To which Khudabaksh says that everyone gets a chance to redeem himself … and Firangi responds well when the time comes. Remember Lagaan, RDB, DCH, Dangal, PK to name a few?

In another perspective, its a dual tribute to both masala and jack sparrow – which made in jarring to some extent, more alien in my books to a surprised audience.

Anyways, in TOH the emotional connect for revenge angle had to be with Fatima’s character. But it never happens to due to Acharya’s lacking and Fatima’s poor acting. [ Even SS suffered with similar lack of connection with the lead girl due to more aggressive and one-dimensional characterisation.] TOH is more hollywood at its core (specially Firangi’s characterization) than any regular masala troupe that the general indian audience is used to. I guess it was bound to face the backlash the way it did. Whats completely logical in a typical hollywood script can unsettle the indian audience due to their ‘set’ expectations. That way TOH is perhaps as big a disappointment as Taran is shouting for last few days. [ But SS did fine in China. Lets see what TOH does in Jan. ]

I felt cinematography is top-notch – They have created a true fairy-land with forts and jungles and all that is supposedly exotic to foreign eyes about India. The Rajasthan bits just seals it.
I criticised the vfx shown in trailer, but didnt mind it during theater watching (cant say that about BB2). Yfx team surely did some work here after the trailer backlash.

With the overall backlash and nil acceptance of TOH, this will hopefully be the end of his Firangi-ness in his project selection. Khudabaksh puts it aptly that he can sense a ‘restless’-ness in Firangi and hoped to make him truly free (Azaad!). I guess he may truly succeed in this. The MB decision is the right direction (no matter what results such a huge project will yield).

Bye bye Masala. Bye bye Firangi. And as Firangi would say – “Jai Shambhu !”

    Postscript – On Mahabharata Web-series:

Looking at the Indian response to SS and TOH, i dont think its wise to invest a lot of money to make a MB films with Aamir as Krishna. Unless one dumbs it down … but then the essence of the story itself will vaporize. Krishna is a lot more Machiavellian character in MB than Firangi. I am quite intrigued to know how masala fans wud react to see a ‘desi masala film’ where Arjuna defeats Bhishma using Shikhandi as a shield (as advised by Krishna), Krishna emotionally brainwashing Arjuna (by citing Abhimanyu’s death) to unethically slaughter Karna (when the latter had requested a pause in battle) or Bheema defeating Duryodhana on final day by sheer cheating (again as advised by ‘God’ Krishna). No way he can play such a character in any other platform than a Netflix web series.

One can never emotionally connect to a character like Krishna (whether depicted in a serious avatar or a more notorious ‘natkhat’ avatar). You can perhaps connect with Pandavas or the Karna character emotionally in a masala setting (lowbrow or highbrow) with all their history and value for righteousness and other angles romped up properly by a director of Rajamouli’s caliber. Krishna’s actions are not so black or white and will never connect in a ‘traditional’ masala setting.

At the most he lost of the profit sharing paycheck and it is ok for him. In that sense, it is ok to take risk and try different things. It is impossible to always hit the bullseye and jackpot. Occassional failures are good for human growth and keeping ego in check. He must have had fun two years and got his dream to work with Bachchan fulfilled. After success of Badhai Ho, YRF should focus on making smaller budget movies with better scripts and smaller but more talented actors. Lesser risk and return on investment is higher even if moderate success.

As for ego being crushed, it is a sadistic thing to say even for Race3. Every film rejected big or small breaks many people including workers. It is a circle. Of course such things give pleasure to some.

But it should not result like what happened to Gurudutt and Vinod Mehra.
As for small producers, today I read that Rajpal Yadav is going to jail for not returning 5 crores borrowed for making a film that flopped. Failure always has domino effect like some production houses being closed and the the workers employed losing their jobs. But these things do happen in other sectors too. One has to learn to live with all this.

        • ToH is hardly a ‘rank bad or dumb’ film as it has been largely made out to be. It belongs to the set of average films in Aamir’s repertoire like Talaash, Secret Superstar, Mangal Pandey – films which were only liked by a niche section of his audience. If you want to cuss Aamir for making dumb films then please point to Ghajini or D3 (but you wont have the balls to do that because masses had lapped them up as blockbusters).

On a bigger scale, if you want more successful yet dumb films, I will recommend stuff like Gadar and BB2 (not BB1 which was indeed far superior as a film than Katappa kyon Maara sequel).

Sources say the actor’s costumes were uncomfortable, and the film’s many physical sequences were hard to perform at his age. Looking back, he feels the discomfort endured and sacrifices made were in vain. Insiders also reveal that the actor was not particularly keen to do the movie in the first place, but was persuaded by the makers who were relentless in their requests for him to take the role. He is said to be disappointed in the makers for failing to spot the problems in the script and deliver a compelling film.

The movie going audience were so pumped up to watch it, the result was shattering of every record. When event films happened before like Mother India, Mughal-E-Azam, Sholay, Hum Apke Hai Kaun, Dilwale Dulhania Lejayenge and Lagaan, the actors and actresses were known throughout India. That makes BB2 achievement even more commendable. I think the next BB2 eclipser will not come from any established stars including 3 Khans but from completely unknown ones like BB2. The open ended climax was a masterstroke thereby raising curiosity level to fever pitch. BB2 pales in comparison to BB1 as a wholesome product in terms of screenplay, dialogues and VFx too. BB2’s climatic duel is cartoonish and video game like when compared to BB1’s epic climatic duel between the mahishmati kingdom and kalakeyas. The biggest, and perhaps the only reason for BB2’s monster success is BB1’s epic second half and the legendary climax.

It’s like Usain Bolt doing 100m and 200m back to back. The former is the headline event but the latter is still gold and following 100m only immortals do it. The hook obviously helps but you still have to execute the 2nd film.

ABO has given their breakup..here share is distributor share not net..that’s 48cr on a 93 cr gross…but again the TN completely stumps me..how can it be a 16cr gross..we read it was 33 cr gross..even otherwise 16cr for a rajni movie doesnt make sense…am thoroughly confused about TN numbers..everything else is clear…

    • Most people have arrived in this range. I think looking at the economics here the film’s heading for flop even though it may make good theatrical business and reviews are decent enough. The costs became too big, poor management basically.

In TN, 2.0 has not crossed Sarkar. It’s around 20/22 Cr Gross and that is high-end PR number. There is another figure doing the rounds which is close to 14 Cr Nett. 2.0 simply did not have the occupancy of Sarkar, so crossing it is out of the question.

But, that is not shocking BO update with 2.0. It is the US opening where the premiere+Day 1 is less than 1 Million. Kabali did 2.7M on Day 1 a few years ago.

It’s a decent watch so should be stable over the weekend and not crash like TOH. Doubt it will have any legs after that, though. The makers have botched up with the release date.

    • The net for TN here is 20 so gross obviously is above 25cr…it still doesnt tally with ABO and BOI TN numbers…I wont be surprised if this hasnt beaten sarkar but I still think the gross will be close to 30cr..satyam and mayajaal were showing all.shows full and this was not a kaala kind of deal where audience chose not to turn up…not sure what’s the deal..all said and done the movie does look like tanking and a big one at that because TN alone anyways cannot save it

      Like

      • Sri50 doesn’t report Nett (if he does, he would mention it specifically). The gross here is 20/22 Cr, Nett in 14/16 Cr region. So, there is no confusion actually. Only the Hindi number is Nett which if adjusted is close to what others are reporting.

As far as tanking, don’t think it will do TOH tank at least until the weekend.

A senior police official in the cyber crime department said his attempts to take down Tamilrockers and their proxy servers in the past were mostly futile for many reasons.

“Tamilrockers is not run by a single individual or a single entity, it is a scattered group of people, who may be anonymous to each other, possibly working abroad. In multiple occasions during some blockbuster movie leaks in the past, we have found that their sites were often hosted by proxy servers based in Russia, Ukraine or countries like that which give immunity from legal actions,” the official said on the condition of anonymity.

The official said the leaks weren’t driven by personal vendetta against a particular producer.

“It is also supported and run by a section of online activists who believes in an ideology against knowledge industry, that drives these anonymous groups successful in many leaks in spite of a massive crackdown of many URLs,” the official said.

The highly awaited Rajinikanth movie, directed by Shankar and reported to have cost over Rs 500 crore to make, may have suffered significant losses due to piracy. The fear of piracy had prompted Lyca Productions – the film’s producers – to move a petition in the court with a list of 12,564 illegal websites, some of which were linked to Tamilrockers.

Even though Lyca Productions submitted a probable list of sites, a new URL of Tamilrockers with a link to ‘2.0’ appeared on Thursday and went viral on social media. Hundreds tweeted asking for a fresh link to the pirated version. Even though some URLs of some proxy sites disappeared after the initial leaks, more URLs appeared with minor changes in them. Some of the websites featured alternate spellings of Tamilrockers such as tamilrockerss.cl, tamilrockerss.website etc.

“In many cases, we found that leaked prints are mostly procured from theatres abroad, such as in Malaysia or Europe. They get recorded with camera phones by individual viewers, or from labs during post-production works,” the police official said.

V Rajendran, an expert in cyber law and the chairman of Chennai-based Digital Security Association, said a battle with such proxy sites may be a difficult task for India.

    • Audience should be educated in this matter, be principled enough, not to watch on these pirated sites. Watching a pirated print is akin to stealing. This idea should be hammered home through advertisements in theatres, on web, tv, every available, platform.

ABO says only 48 cr ‘share’ from day one … 375 cr ‘share’ for recovery is a long way off. We may be looking at massive losses in a week’s time.

Liked the first one a lot but the reviews are tricky for this one (though Tamil reviews are much more positive than the Hindi ones).

  22. 2.0 ALL INDIA First Day Territorial Breakdown
    Friday 30 November 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 has collected 64 crore nett apprx all over India which is a huge number but still just a little more than 50% of Bahubali – The Conclusion which is the highest first day collection in India of 123 crore nett apprx.

The surprise is the figures in North India and Central India as well as Bihar. These markets have done very well for a dubbed film. The South is good but the trade there probably expected higher numbers especially the home market of Tamil Nadu. Bihar is almost at the level of Thugs Of Hindostan with a Thursday release compared to the Diwali day of Thugs Of Hindostan. The single screens in the circuit ran to full or near full houses.

The all India territorial breakdown is as follows and the figures are for all languages in each circuit. The collections in Mumbai and Tamil Nadu are apprx and could go a little higher.

    Mumbai – 6,50,00,000 apprx

    Delhi / UP – 4,86,00,000

    East Punjab – 1,93,00,000

    Rajasthan – 1,28,00,000

    CP Berar – 1,32,00,000

    CI – 93,00,000

    Nizam Andhra – 16,79,00,000

    Mysore / Karnataka – 7,26,00,000

    Tamil Nadu – 16,50,00,000 apprx

    Kerala – 3,44,00,000

    West Bengal – 1,06,00,000

    Bihar – 1,22,00,000

    Assam – 29,00,000

    Odisha – 68,00,000

2.0 has collected around 64 crore nett which will give GROSS box office of around 80 crore. It is the biggest total ever after Bahubali – The Conclusion which is a phenomenal 150 crore plus.

Rajnikant is the only star to have two in the top five.

2018 has seen four entries with 2.0, Thugs of Hindostan, Sarkar (Tamil Film), and Sanju. Below are the top ten openers across India in all formats. All figures are GROSS.

My own Hindi estimate has this at no more than 115Cr in first week at best (8 day week). If it beats this number it’ll be good WOM in play and will go above 160Cr LT. It needs a huge weekend and if that were to happen that swing would have been reported today. Haven’t read or seen anything positive today suggesting positive WOM has come into play.

  25. As reported earlier, this morning, the couple flew to Jodhpur (their wedding destination) along with their families and very close friends.

This morning a report in DNA revealed that the security at Umaid Bhavan in Jodhpur (Priyanka- Nick’s Wedding Venue) has been beefed up and the hotel staff members have been sent on leave. Only managerial level staff will continue to work for the next five days.

But, strict rules have been laid down for them too. They won’t be allowed to use their smartphones, instead, they will be given basic phones to communicate.

The pre-nuptial ceremonies will be starting from today and every possible measure is taken to make it the most coveted affair. The hotel staff that has been sent on leave from today, has been replaced by the employees of the event management and security firms hired by the hosts.

Strict rules have been laid down for the guests too. Along with the staff and the security, even guests attending the wedding festivities cannot carry their mobiles for any of the ceremonies.

Priyanka and Nick have signed a $2.5-million deal with an international magazine for the pictures’ rights and hence stringent measures are being taken to prevent any leakage of photographs or videos.

A close source has revealed to DNA that two American companies and one Indian firm have been taken on board to manage the security of Umaid Bhawan Palace.

The security guards deployed with the royal family too will be removed from the hotel and only the palace’s catering staff will remain the same. A set of security team has been specially hired to prevent any gate crashers.

Along with all these measures, jammers have been installed at the venues to block signals at the time of the ceremonies.

Now, a fresh news that’s making rounds, states that the guests attending the wedding have been made to sign a confidentiality contract.

A report in PinkVilla states that apart from beefing up the security, the guests at the wedding have been asked to sign the confidentiality clauses. Every guest invited for the wedding received a personal call and has been asked to sign a confidentiality clause.

With high-end security on board, total replacement of staff, no cell phones clause, confidentiality clause and powerful jammers; Nick and Priyanka have left no stone unturned to make their wedding the most coveted affair!

I love it when desi actors channel their inner Marlon Brando, Godfather type acting. Tripathi plays gangsta in most movies. So it is different, different version of Brando. And the whole cast is awesome. It is extremely predictable, extremely enjoyable masala, with tons of gory violence which is shown in very creative ways, sex, bad language and small town ki feel aati hai. Acting, scripting, editing is amazing but the best part is the underlying humor. There is a natgeo scene that made me laugh so hard. It is a fun ride, though I have only watched few episodes and not finished it yet. Each episode ends with “roundtable” with director and actors discussing the episode, which makes it even more interesting. And Ali Fazal is pure eye candy. Well played by all.

1- Characters like Bahubali, Katappa, Bhalladev will be remember forever.

2- Though story is noy unique but the screenplay and how so many things pulled together with seemlessness will be gold standerd for future.

3- Bahubali taught us that only CGI is not enough to make a good film you still need a good story.

4- Ofcourse..The trending and final BO result will be there to remember.

I havent any memory of Gadar b/c that time i am not that mush into films but Babhubali is the only film (say in last quarter of century) that is truley an event film. I have seen people were posting thier photo with Bahubali-2 ticket in social media if it was a entry of some sort of elite club. So

Remember the famous dialogue of sholay “maa kehti hai beta so ja nahi toh gabbar aa jayega”. After watching Tumband, I remembered this sholay dialogue. The movie is about horror of greed. The film opened venice film festival, as critics choice. It is very rooted in Indian folk tales. Bit more on arty side but I liked it a lot. 2.0: My review

Sometime last week, the shrewd producer Karan, an opportunist both in his party circles as well as in terms of projects, stated how Baahubali was a slap in the face of all of us. I do not know the context of the statement, nor do I gave it enough thought at the time. But after watching 2.0, I do believe presenting both this film and the larger than life Bahubali movies for the Hindi audience has been the best thing he has ever done for cinema.

Enough digression already, and enough credit given to Johar already. 2.0 is a bloody good jolly time at the movies, where Shankar, the master “imaginator” and a genius of a man who gets things done and shown to the audience exactly the way he wants, conjures up a film that simply refuses to let you look away. Yes, it has “massy” written all over it, where he respects the time of the paying public and shows a big fat finger to the ones who wish to judge it for all the wrong reasons.

Yes, it is not to be viewed as a film. 2.0 is a roller coaster ride right from the word go, like one of those 7D adventures you pay for a 15 minute ride. This one just goes on and on, albeit in a great way! A case can be made for the outlandish climax that overstays its welcome, but once you let go of your movie watching inhibitions, even that works wonderfully well for the inner you that enjoys guilty pleasures as much as everyone else.

Forget what the academic critic in you thinks. Forget the bias surrounding the film, or any of its stars. Forget what the paid as well as unpaid reviewers are lamenting about the film, finding faults in the story or character development. Just grab your popcorn and watch it in 3D.

I came out with a huge grin on my face. Shankar has served the dish a tad delayed, but hot and one that you will devour with relish. Watch it only, and only in 3D!
And if you can whistle, all the better.

It is an all-time classic. Maybe not for a few persons here and there. But when there is such massive appreciation across the whole country, the writing is on the wall.

the yardstick for success in the commerce of film is the 100 cr Club .. so until you can qualify for a product that comes in the category of a 100 cr Club, you are not IT .. or not there or not valued enough .. collect 100 cr in the business of the film and you are there ..

and for the past the yardstick was the number of weeks – 25, 50 100 weeks .. and the conclusion that weeks do not compare with 100 cr so you are not its member ..

In conclusion .. if you are not in 100 cr Club you are inferior commercially ..

But this is a yardstick constructed by you for today .. and because weeks do not feature in yardstick you are inferior ..

    cool ..

    BUT .. dear assessor ..

You cannot do away with the yardstick of the past .. and if you consider the 100 cr as the prime then you must consider the weeks as prime too .. for they reflected the yardstick of commerce .. and if you are going to use the 100 cr measure as the final .. then how many of the present do measure to 25, 50 100 weeks of commerce .. none that one can see even with a binocular .. !!

And may I just state that in the adjusted currency values of time .. the 25, 50 and 100 weeks monetarily in adjusted currency were all above 1000 cr !! .. which none of the present have even been near to ..

  34. 2.0 Box Office Day 2 Early Trends: The Hold Indicates A Massive Weekend!

2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, has taken an impressive start at the box office by collecting 20.25 crores.
    By Koimoi.com Team -December 1, 2018

2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, has taken an impressive start at the box office by collecting 20.25 crores (Hindi dubbed version) on Thursday i.e. opening day. Going by the critics reviews and audience feedbacks, it seems that movie has met the expectations set due to its pre-release buzz.

As per the early trends, the movie has shown a considerable growth on day 2 by collecting in the range of 18-20 crores. The brand power of Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Shankar, attracted the movie maniacs on the first day, but now it’s the real ‘content’ factor, which is taking the game further for this sci-fi entertainer.

Barring Titanic, none of the major Hollywood grossers right from the times of Godfather to Jurassic Park to Avatar to Dark Knight to MCU have a love story at its theme. Even Sholay & BB did not hv a love story as its central theme. George Bush, the 41st president of the United States and the father of the 43rd, who steered the nation through a tumultuous period in world affairs but was denied a second term after support for his presidency collapsed under the weight of an economic downturn and his seeming inattention to domestic affairs, died on Friday. He was 94.

His death, which was announced by his office, came less than eight months after that of his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush.

Mr. Bush had a form of Parkinson’s disease that forced him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter in recent years, and he had been in and out of hospitals during that time as his health declined. In April, a day after attending Mrs. Bush’s funeral, he was treated for an infection that had spread to his blood. In 2013, he was in dire enough shape with bronchitis that former President George W. Bush, his son, solicited ideas for a eulogy.

But he proved resilient each time. In 2013 he told well-wishers, through an aide, to “put the harps back in the closet.”

    Saturday 01 December 2012 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) had a good second day as it grossed around 18 crore nett on day two. There is a drop in collections but it is limited drop and with a dubbed film the fear as always a big second day drop. These is a normal trend for 2.0 an outright Hindi film and its very good for a dubbed Hindi film. The two day business is 38 crore nett which is good. .

The film is performing well in Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Bihar and Central India and most of these places are where dubbed South Indian films struggle especially the North. The collections are above averahe in places like Mumbai and West Bengal while it has mainly seen a release in Marathawada which for our markets comes in the South while elsewhere its a minimal Hindi release in South. Basically what we could call the Akshay Kumar markets for this film have done well and actually thats not just the case for the Hindi version but for the film as a whole. Even if we look at all India then the out performance for this is film is Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI and Bihar.

The first two two day collections of 2.0 (Hindi are as follows

    Thursday – 20,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 18,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 38,00,00,000 apprx

The film needs to be stable again on Saturday and have a push on Sunday and that should see the film come out with a good weeeknd and a chance for a good run over the next 2-3 weeks. The figures for the all India version will be given later but the Hindi version of the film has done best and looks to be the one should also do best in the long run.

In Overseas the Hindi version has not performed at all due to the complete lack of awareness that this film is also in Hindi.

The non holiday Thursday release is also not a great idea for the Hindi markets but it has still put in a good base and now it remains to be seen where the film goes from here and a good hold on Friday especially in mass markets will be a good sign.

        • Except for the odd Gold, Akshay Kumar’s movies usually trend very well. They usually do 10 x opening day. Films like Airlift, Jolly LLB 2, Rustom, Toilet etc. did that.

However, 2.0 is not the typical Akshay Kumar kind of deal. It is more expensive but seems also more front loaded. Let’s see how it trends.

It has picked up and started quite well on Saturday morning from reports. So, the chance of a good extended week end is still very much there.

  42. The way 2nd day held on with a minimal drop of 10%, is a good sign for this film. It shows public are willing to spend to watch the spectacle. I guess it will collect 90-100 in 4 day weekend and may double its lifetime to 180-200, unless it crashes from Minday. If it makes 200+ then it is commendable for a dubbed film.

  44. On its first day, 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, garnered a revenue of ₹80 crore across India.

This is the second highest for an Indian film after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), which made over ₹150 crore.

But at home in Chennai, the movie managed to collect only ₹2.42 crore. Overall, in Tamil Nadu, the movie collected ₹18 crore.

The Vijay-starrer Sarkar — which released during the first week of November 2018 — broke records by grossing over ₹30 crore on day one in Tamil Nadu.

In its Hindi version, 2.0 made over ₹20 crore.

He said, “The biggest challenge is that everyone wants to watch the film in the 3D version. If you go to tier 2 and tier 3 towns, not all theatres are equipped with 3D technology.”

Another trade source pointed out that Tamil Nadu was not a market for expensive films like 2.0.

    ‘Math does not work’
He further said, “The movie is mind-blowing, but in Tamil Nadu, with the government capping ticket prices, we can’t have an expensive movie.”

“The math does not work well,” he added.

Theatre owners across the State said that it’s housefull for them for the next four days.

In 2010, 2.0’s prequel Enthiran — which was produced by media baron Kalanithi Maran — garnered good response at the box office.

According to the 2011 annual report of Sun TV Network, the company released the movie simultaneously in three languages titled Enthiran in Tamil and Robot in Telugu and Hindi.

The company earned revenues of ₹179 crore, including ₹8 crore towards satellite rights.

The company had spent ₹132 crore on the production of the blockbuster.

        • It’s a double whammy. Any project management team will tell you a delay is awful. Here even worse it hurts the anticipation (potential revenue), then costs get hammered. Economically this film has been doomed theatrically but personally I don’t benchmark success like this. If it trends well it’s done what it could do best given the cards dealt. The rest someone should be getting fired for the delays and poor distribution.

        • About the budget/costs:

I think Shankar can’t be blamed for the delay promised by original VFX company. The original VFX company couldn’t complete it as it was complex work for them and then Shankar had to find another big company. The first company still took the money as they worked on the project for a year. Now he was pressed for time, Shankar had to pay 2nd time for VFX company plus additional as he needed it in shorter timeframe. They also spent lot of money in transferring all the data from previous company to new company to continue the work. These are all big US VFX companies and I think 100 crores or more was just wasted on this wrong decision which added to the cost and which is not seen on the big screen. Its bad luck for Shankar but there’s nothing he could have done to avoid this additional expense. If this movie was made around 300-350 crores of original budget, it would have recovered money somehow. But now over 500 crores is difficult unless you make an absolute masterpiece with tremendous repeat value like Avatar.

Now, I am always prepared for the worst. During Naachgaana days i was younger, got excited with Chandni chowk to China and thought it would be best cross over film from India to China. (How naive of me)
The hype got me in. Then the movie opened in UAE on thursdays and WoM started trickling in. I couldn’t believe it then. I saw the movie and at that time i thought it was alright. Akki was good, Deepika was good…songs were hit..so why so much negativity?
Looking back now i realise the game industry was playing then. Foreign Studios were throwing money and industry was making trash with the easy money.

Now again i realise that makers are pumping in insane money because of Baahubali 2. I see Brahmastra, etc which makes me worry again because South India has now entered north india in a big way now. Audience is not ready for anything which would be only air. No CCTC types movies please. 🙂

2.0 set to emerge a HIT

2.0 (Hindi) is looking to emerge a HIT film as the film has been accepted in most of the Hindi markets. Its difficult to put a number on the third day number yet as some places are going up very strongly while other are stable.

But North India which is traditionally weakest with dubbed films is showing super strength on day three with Delhi / UP heading for 6 crore nett and East Punjab going to 2.50 crore nett. This is the third day and these numbers are excellent in these markets for a film of this sort and that is allowing for the presence of Akshay Kumar.

As these markets are so strong for a dubbed Rajnikant starrer it is only a matter of time when the rest of Hindi markets also play catch up. There is sure to be a healthy jump on day three and the Hindi version is set to be a HIT film at the very least.

We’ve had stuff like Andhadhun, Tummbad, October, Badhai Ho, Manto, Stree, Raazi, Mulk, Sanju, Mukkabaaz, Manmarziyan, Parmanu, Bhavesh Joshi, Padmaavat, 2.0 (hindi version), Bioscopewala, Pataakha, Pari, Padman and Karwaan, and there is another month to go where a couple of films may throw a surprise.

  61. Saw 2.0 last night. The movie is a worthy sequel to the original Robot. This time around the story is not a wholesome package(romance, twists and songs) like last time but it’s actually true to the genre of good vs evil without songs and true blue action spectacle. I think Shankar had an idea to make a movie on Akshay’s birdman character from long and then used that idea and put it in the Robot world. So Akshay’s character is usual Shankar’s hero but in this movie he’s the negative hero. Still it is very good to watch a negative character with strong positive message. The story idea is very good. First half is usual killings but all the murders has extraordinary VFX sequences and Akshay’s intro is one of the best for any actor and he looks great! The second half is the roller coaster fight till the end. I would have like the movie to be extra 10 mins and flesh out the details better. I felt they compromised screenplay to not make it long as already there are no songs in the movie and audience will get bored. Right now no one will get bored but you feel underwhelmed at places which are regular Shankar scenes from earlier movies. Shankar doing story, screenplay, directions and design VFX sequences and choreograph the fights and everything is too much effort for single person and he needs another point of view somewhere if he’s going wrong. Still to pull this off single handedly is nothing short of miracle.

Performances are great – Akshay has really acted well for the given role and left an indelible mark in a Rajnikanth movie which is a huge deal whereas Rajnikanth has really enjoyed the movie and his real acting or enjoyment is done by Chitti 2.0 and 3.0 versions and not the Scientist or Chitti. Amy looked great for the robot Nila and suited perfectly. The movie will be remember for Shankar’s wild imagination and creative VFX ideas (even he VFX sequences and action choreography is conceived by Shankar). The whole sequences of fights and action is something not seen on Indian screen and at many places it appears one is watching a Hollywood action blockbuster but the content and style and soul is completely Indian.

The movie would have been a classic if some more effort was done on the screenplay. Danny’s son character is very stupid and he just lands and let go Akshay’s soul from the secure facility in like 2 seconds. Similarly I didn’t like the idea about overlong climax and make it funny in last few mins you get 3.0 and its entertaining to watch but I would have preferred more emotional ending with Akshay dying a heroic death. Instead he’s killed as normal villain and then Rajni gets his dying dialogues. I doubt if it was any other hero, Akshay would have got a heroic death but you can’t expect others overshadowing Rajnikanth in his own movie. Finally, promoting the only song with budget 20 crores and using it after the movie with the credits is really stupid decision.

Overall, these are minor issues in a huge successful effort. Just the VFX and whole action sequences with still strong good and strong evil characters are more than enough reasons to like the movie and turn it into a blockbuster. If the audience don’t turn this into a blockbuster, no other director will try such a huge movie again.

    • I want to add 1 point which book one has mentioned. All the important scenes by Akshay Kumar mouthing dialogues have been shot in Hindi as well
simultaneously when shooting in Tamil. That early helped immensely to connect Akshay’s character in Hindi. So even though its dubbed movie, Akshay’s role makes it bilingual movie and not purely dubbed. Lot of other characters like Adil Hussain, Sudhanshu Pandey etc also spoke Hindi lines. Rest of it is anyways action. So, I won’t treat this as dubbed like Baahubali but more of bilingual movie.

      • Even I noticed that. Adil’s dialogues were also spoken in hindi but not Rajnisir’s. I think all close up shots had dialogues (of people who know the language) in hindi. So it doesn’t feel like we are watching a dubbed movie. Both Tumbbad and 2.0 took many years of effort and thankfully it shows on the screen. Though in case of Tumbbad, the director was rookie.

  62. Just watched 2.0. It is very much like marvel comic. Iron man-Bird man. I had no issues with anything including story. Akshay took lot of risk here as he is really old balding man before becoming birdman later on. I am sure Shankar approached other biggies in hindi belt before going to Akshay because this mega budget movie needed one big star from south and one big one from north to recover cost and be profitable. The theater had barely 15 people and was showing only 3D shows and even Badhai Ho on third week was more full than this, 1st saturday show of 2.0, which is sad because it is worth watching it. Just the opening scenes are entertaining and there is lot of male-female stuff between the robots and their banter is entertaining. Everyone stayed till the end credit song was over. Rajni has aged well and looks good. Akshay is benign villain and my sympathies were with the birdman! So it is not really good vs evil in classic sense and in my opinion.

  63. 2.0 (Hindi) Is Very Good On Saturday
    Sunday 02 December 2018 00.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) has come into its own on Saturday with very good business on Saturday after two good days. The early estimates for the third day are 24-25 crore nett as the film looks at 35-40% jump in collections. The three day weekend is a solid 62-63 crore nett with Sunday still to come.

The film is a non holiday Thursday release and a south dubbed film and top it has lost around 10-12% business in its Hindi version due to a minimal Hindi release in the South which actually makes this 60 crore nett number much better than it actually looks.

More importantly the film has started to score across Hindi markets. Delhi / UP and East Punjab lead and it is a sure shot HIT in these two markets already and no dubbed South Indian dubbed film has ever worked her barring the Bahubali films. On Saturday Gujarat has picked up hugely and it should show another big jump on Sunday.

Sunday should also see West Bengal do a big number which will mean it has been accepted across all Hindi film circuits. A big all India number on Sunday will be confirmation of the families across Hindi markets taking to the film. The film is showing strong business in Karnataka also on Saturday though there is a minimal Hindi release in that market.

  64. But the surprises don’t stop here. Enter the 3.0 version of Chitti. These tiny Thalaivar microbots are winning hearts all over. It is as though all of Rajinikanth’s swagger has been packaged into this small adorable red robot. Do you go ‘awww’ or whistle at its antics? Simple, you do both. This is one of Shankar’s best ideas in terms of marketability because this character is sure to be a hit with children. 3.0 saves the day in the film, by riding pigeons and taunting Birdman by gesturing that the microbots are going to kill the birds. You may argue that this is not in good taste but you can’t deny that it is fun.

Shankar has gone on record to say that he is willing to start a robot franchise and would love to direct a 2.0 sequel. He has set the stage with the introduction of 3.0. Whether the sequel takes off or not, it is certain that 3.0 is here to stay.

    • That is the twist. The good (Chitti and the bots) is not pure good and evil (birdman) is not pure evil. That part I didn’t expect and was different experience altogether and made it interesting. Is radiation from cell towers causing huge havoc on birds? Is that proven? I honestly didn’t know about it. They could have taken up a cause that is more well known like air pollution or ozone layer, global warming, tsunami. It seemed to me that they started writing the story backwards. Created birdman first and then tried to justify it with a reason. I could be wrong.

The masala genre (I use the term “genre” loosely) is one of the most MORAL of genres, like the Western. The lines between Good and Bad are clearly drawn. When Thugs of Hindostan came out, this was the problem. I wrote: The only way this story would have worked is if we were constantly kept on edge about whether Firangi Mallah is a rogue or a nice guy — and with a superstar like Aamir Khan, it’s never in doubt that he will feel a twinge of conscience and rise against the British. But it’s more than that It’s more than just the fact that our big heroes almost never play morally complicated characters in big movies (as opposed to, say, an indie-ish film like 1947: Earth). It’s also that the masala universe cannot (and will not) accommodate such a character.

      *******************

Is any of this “wrong”? No. It’s brilliant, actually. Shankar’s films – for me – work better when I think back on them than when I am actually watching them. He’s one of our best ideas men, someone who upends conventional morality by giving his “hero” a mechanical birth and his “villain” a mythical birth. (The latter is literally “birthed” by a bird.) But all this needs layered writing, where we see and sense all these facets as opposed to simply settling down for a “WWF movie”. With such amazing visuals, some of you may not mind doing that. A lot of people have told me exactly that. (It’s some version of “I know the film has many problems but it’s a hell of a ride and I loved it.”) But this is an if-only lament from someone who worships masala movies and their ethos. These brilliant subversions need writing that’s just as brilliant. Otherwise, we’re just watching a sound-and-light show, not that there’s anything wrong with that…

That’s what I think all the time. They complain to Aamir himself about the content he regularly delivered more than any other – while a year earlier they voted out a content-driven film like SS over a brainless entertainer! Double morality at its finest!

We now see in non-Desi areas what the truth is. TOH is not Aamir’s best, without question, but EVERYONE at the cinema in Berlin enjoyed this movie! And now it happen also in Turkey.

That’s all from me.😊 More out there. There was mention of an 8.5 or 8.6 rating from Turkish fans. Which is too much of course but to fans in India, this sort of praise is balm. TOH was trashed beyond limits, more than it deserved to. And I will be happy to see a correction. If such correction has to come from Turkey and China — and I hope it happens, some acceptance beyond tweets — Aamir fans like self can stop feeling bad about the engineered fiasco called Thugs of Hindostan. Not a great film, but not Mela level disaster. As Aamir rightly said, it entertained a minority. Despite its negative parts.

    • What a malicious video! Point out the very obvious hypocrisy here but do so without adding an unnecessary religious hatred angle to it. Priyanka had both a Hindu and Christian wedding and the malicious intent behind highlighting the Christian ceremony alone in this video is quite clear. Ironically, she was the only one who got married in a historic Indian setting while devoted nationalists like Virat chose to marry in an Italian chateau (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Her intention behind doing the firecracker video was to promote a ‘sensitive environmentalist’ image not an anti-Hindu one. Celebrities all over the world are guilty of these double standards and promoting a holier-than-thou image. Whether it’s people like Leo DiCaprio asking people to conserve water at home and then flying private around the world or Megan Markle broadcasting to the media that she asked guests donate to charity on her wedding instead of giving her gifts to show her ‘non-materialistic social activist’ side while spending crores of rupees on her wedding dress alone. It has nothing to do with them hating Hindu festivals which is an absurd conclusion to come to. In many countries you need special police/ local authority permission to burst fireworks and for good reason.

Call Priyanka out on her blatant hypocrisy by all means. But it is hateful and incredibly narrow-minded to make an inter-racial/ religious relationship the subject of your ridicule simply because they dared to have a Christian ceremony as well as a Hindu one. It seems the Twitter bigots consider Hindu women their personal property and froth at the mouth any time a Hindu woman dares to fraternise with a Muslim/ Christian/ Parsi/ Jewish man, whether onscreen or in real life. Such blatant entitlement over woman is sickening and no different from the attitudes displayed in the most extreme Arab countries that prohibit the women from marrying non-Muslim men.

I’m no Priyanka or Nick Jonas fan and I too found the fireworks hypocritical but I also find the reactions to their wedding quite alarming.

As for producers, they have gone mum on TN’s saturday number. ABO is talking about losses in Telegu belt.

These films did around 10 times their opening day. This is not tremendous trending in the league of Baahubali 2. Far from that. But by today’s standards, it is solid trending.

Even Padman which did trend more moderately opened at 10cr and finished at around 82cr.

I think if Robot trends like the typical Akshay Kumar films as shown above, it will be a winner in the hindi belt. However, nothing is given. It seems a more front-loaded kind of deal and is a dubbed film which makes it more difficult. But the trend has been alright until here.

I guess since the film is performing decently in the hindl belt, now some will try to knock it though its collections down in the south. That’s like trying to move the goalpost, isn’t it?

It’s not like Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam opening at at Number 4 in UK makes it more relevant while it under-performs in India.

You can be sure if the films flops, or if the film were collecting only
80-90cr total in hindi, Akshay Kumar would be getting a hiding here. The focus on this blog, the northern BO trade and media have always mostly been how much it does in the hindi belt and how much the hindi version does.

I however thing the movie will make money in 1 year for the makers. Did not they already earned 350 cr or so even before the release via selling of various rights.
As the movie is getting very positive wom, those prices will remain now. Had it not been for the public response, the same scenario would have cast the doom.

Nonetheless, 20 Cr + Opening for 2.0 Hindi on a non holiday Thursday, where night show benefits don’t come in) and where almost entire south was unavailable, will qualify for a good opening if you factor the 15-20% shortfall.

        • Your overoptimism towards one favourite is there for all to see!! Despite Telugu & Tamil not performing as they ought to be in movie’s first week keeping the massive budget, huge star-cast and an ace director, you keep showing us the bright side despite facts suggesting otherwise!! If a movie of the size of 2.0 could not open to bumper response in its first weekend, what chances are there that it could do in the coming weeks and that too 500 Crores?? Let me know how many movies have achieved this feat in the past? As far as i know none and you are making 500 Crores figure look like a ‘laddoo’ which can be achieved whenever you want!! You were so critical of TOH opening day number, yet you were the same guy who advocated for 10% differentiation in reported numbers was fair which takes TOH’s first day figure in 46-47 range, still a record opening!! But I have never seen you question, even for once, the ‘ so called accurate 44.97 crores’ figure of HNY ever, why??
You think us to be ‘gullible’ who would believe anything under the garb of box-office expertise but we know the ‘agenda’ but keep mum to let you ‘enjoy’ the fallacy but sometimes it becomes indispensable to uncover the truth lest it go beyond recognition.

Fans praying for the success of their favourites is nothing unusual but praying for others failures is not only absurd but senseless as well as other stars failures can’t compensate for your star’s failure!! It’s only when your favourite succeeds, it makes a difference not others failures. So let’s assume Shahrukh’s next bombs but could that reverse the backlash Aamir received for TOH as both are standalone movies and the audience wouldn’t start loving Aamir for delivering a turkey as Shahrukh has also one!! Everyone is judged on the basis of their talent and capability, so in case of Aamir, the audience has the highest bar both quality and box-office wise and when he fails to deliver on both count, he is bound to face brickbats. It’s the expectations people have which determine the success or failure as Virat scoring a mere 50 is deemed a failure for most of the people when the same 50 is celebrated by other players is just the difference how people look at them hence the difference in expectations. As a fan, I want Aamir to succeed based on his films and decisions rather than failures of his peers as that gives me nothing but negativity which is toxic for my well-being.

  81. On Horror films, Stree, 2.0 and the legend of Parshurama

    *******************************************************************

Having read the plot of Shankar’s 2.0 (I’ve decided I’m not watching this film), I’m reminded of the avenging spectre trope used in Horror cinema, across both Hollywood and Bollywood. The plot in such movies is usually quite simple: an honest person is wronged and killed. That person’s spirit rises from the ashes and seeks revenge, often stopping after the perpetrator is killed.

In Hindi cinema, films like Madhumati, Bees Saal Baad, Suryavanshi, Bhool Bhulaiya (Chandramukhi in the South), Om Shanti Om, Talaash, Darling, Bhoot and now Stree offer the same (or a slight variation) of this familiar plot device. In Hollywood, we have What Lies Beneath, Candyman, The Grudge & Ghost among other such films. It’s such a common trope that it even finds its way into popular literature.

The interesting part about this seemingly generic motif lies in its usage. Almost exclusively, in Hindi cinema, the avenging ghost happens to be female. It’s not a coincidence. Rather, it serves as an example of effective social commentary. Women in India being oppressed and marginalized are given superpowers (after death) to right their wrongs via this plot device. The other option (story-wise) is to let the oppressed women fight it out against the system (a patriarchal society) but that sometimes makes for a not-so engaging social drama (e.g. Shakti — The Power, starring Karisma Kapoor). Moreover, the first approach is usually more commercially viable as well.

In Stree, Bollywood’s recent runaway hit, the script writers take the former approach. In what is essentially a pro-feminist script, set in a small village where male privilege runs rampant, the all-powerful avenging spirit not only hunts for males but also takes them away naked, metaphorically stripping them of their masculinity. The horror film genre conventions stay in place, but this subtext offers delicious irony with respect to the battle of the sexes. The males in the village are, in fact, forced to wear sarees in order to escape punishment. In other Hindi films, the retribution is not so harsh, and certainly not all males are targeted, but the unscrupulous villain, always a man, is found running terrified. The social order is thus inverted.

Shankar’s 2.0 also has an avenging spectre in his story. But this time around, it’s the story of a man, an ornithologist, who takes revenge on mankind for destroying his favourite species — birds. Although one can’t deny that birds represent a marginalized section of life on Earth, I’m inclined to think this plot point is so far out there, it’s practically irrelevant. It’s a manufactured cause, a politically correct subtext that’s neither here nor there, in case it offends anyone. And offending people, even a small sub-section, for a big-budget extravaganza is like committing wilful suicide — especially in today’s politically charged climate. But this informs a separate discussion.

There is another point of commonality between Stree and 2.0 (based on the story I’ve read) where once the spirit becomes omnipotent, it imparts punishment indiscriminately. It doesn’t really care if someone is innocent or not, it’s out there to get everyone who remotely fits the bill. This reminds of the legend of Parshurama — the sixth avatar of Vishnu who wiped out the entire Kshatriya race no less than 23 times. I find this similarity, this greying of areas, quite interesting. Direct revenge is perhaps justified, at least in a cinematic universe, but how does one deal with repeated instances of killing? Should our sympathies still lie with the avenging spirit once it starts killing out of mere habit? I find this kind of moral conundrum to be a surprise package in genre films. In a good way, of course. I personally look forward to more such open-ended explorations in commercial cinema.

On the contrary, the story for the birds is so compelling that noone will say it is manufactures, artificial cause. 🙂

This is a wonderful commentary. The dilemma was there with me as well. I am still unable to decide who is right or wrong in the whole movie. As a cell phone user…am i indirectly killing the birds (esp migratory birds)?

This question will remain with all and to some extent strengthens the antagonist role.

    • BOI has blasted Tamil film industry for unusual negativity and is totally justified in doing so –

The all India business of 2.0 got a boost on Saturday with collections of 56-57 crore nett. The jump was driven by the Hindi circuits especially North and Mumbai but the Southern markets are sustaining. This film has a lot of negativity in the South and it mainly seems to be coming from the Tamil film industry or people linked to that industry when in truth it is THE film of that industry and should be the pride of that industry.

The negativity was pretty clear on Thursday evening when these 12 and 13 crorre GROSS numbers from Tamil Nadu started to do the rounds. But at the end of the day you may have some takers for this sort of rubbish but in the wider picture its just some sort of agenda or limited knowledge of box office numbers. In short 2.0 is to the Tamil film industry what Sholay is to the Hindi film industry and Bahubali is to the Telugu film industry. It may not reverberate at the levels of those films across India but that does not take away the fact that it stands apart from what has come and gone in the Tamil industry so far by a distance. So negativity for the best ever in your industry is just crazy.

The other reason for the agenda could be the hero Rajnikant but the fact there is this guy has dominated that industry for 38 years now and it can be pretty much said it will never find such a megastar again. In fact maybe the industry can attempt to make a film at the level of 2.0 again in time but the stardom of Rajnikant in Tamil cinema will not be repeated.

When there is negativity about a film like Thugs of Hindostan then it is understandable as its public rejection but with 2.0 there is no such thing and the film has been liked by the vast majority be it Amritsar or Ambur.

The film will go past 200 crore nett on Sunday and will basically become the highest grossing film (not adjusted) in the history of Tamil cinema in four days in India and worldwide. The worldwide figures should comfortably cross 300 crore by the end of business on Sunday

  84. Myselfaamir – You are the China BO champion more than anyone else here.

Padman is releasing on 14th. This could be the biggest bollywood movie there in Dec. I would rate its chances to be better than ToH just on the basis of movie quality. (There is no comparison actually).

So please share the news once the China release for Padman gets closer.

    • Padman maybe appreciated for drama but its message is not relevant to China as they dont have the same taboos like us. Just like TEPK.

I will still stick to my opinion and belief from whatever i have got to know about menstruation and issues with it for poor women. This is a global problem and no country is untouched.

Read what Bill Gates said on Padman.

      • And Padman goes beyond social issues. It celebrates entrepreneurship / social business and knowing few chinese business man (i would rate them highly and extremely aggressive when it comes to doing business), it is going to connect a lot more than it did in India.

  85. The film should have been released only in hindi or in tamil only abroad. The theatres are divided between 3 languages and making choices difficult for the audience. One telugu family I know wants to watch it only the telugu version but the theatre and timings are not suiting while hindi version is more accessible. If there is only hindi version, they would have gone to that theatre without thinking.

    Like

    • True..same with few i know.
However there are not many who watch other language movies. If Akshay had not been in 2.0…not sure if it would have got even 1000 screens in North India. Now we know that Hindi business is leading the show overall.
Case in South India for hindi film is even worse. A Hindi movie in south India is less popular than an english or a chinese film.

The growth of 30-35% on consecutive days of weekend is going to augur well for this movie. The difference between TOH and 2.0 is TOH was on a free fall from 2nd day. The growth indicates that public acceptance, especially family audience, is very much there.
I guess for the first time Akshay’s movie is faring better than Salman and Amir films in a year. If Zero underperforms, then in a calendar year Akshay will have outclassed all 3 Khans. That’s a quite achievement.

I really appreciate this honesty. But the path chosen by you (i still do not know why you talk in ‘we’ as if all Aamir fans are same), is a long laborious one. Till the next Aamir’s release, you have to keep on doing and trust me it will not only be painful, but also you will be the one who will be wrong most of the time. And that next Aamir’s release is not going to come soon. In fact it would be more delayed now.

Not sure if you are watching Big Boss, but there is a character called Deepika. She is foolishly supporting the arrogant Sreshanth calling him Bhaiya etc. They share common interest for sure, but the support looks awful.

  91. I don’t think people are that mean. Even diehard fans. I want all producers to get their money back and do not like to see films flop. Most of the time there is a collective audience radar, audience knows, it can smell the movie before its release. And when it doesn’t or thinks that movie is flop and do not go see it, there is WOM and they are sleeper hits. Making movies is risky business but a good product will always sell. A bad product will always tank.

I am not that naive to believe that others are so good after going through all those threads.
And bad films work most of the time and good films tank most of the time. Just like bad people thrive while good people suffer most of the time.

  92. 102 Not Out was below the mark in China has it grossed $3.16 million in China over three days. Hichki a couple of months back had grossed around $5.1 million though 102 Not Out had a better Friday. The trend was not too strong for 102 Not Out as collections on Sunday were 30% down from Saturday.

The $3.16 million number is INR 22 crore which looks big considering that 102 Not Out is not a big film but it got a good release in China and the expectations on the release were of better numbers. Its unlikely the film can sustain in China. Pad Man which has a female subject which tend to fare better in China will release on the 14th December and hopefully will see a better turnout.

    *************

Before turning back for the moment to FB2, there’s an Indian film that looks to be doing bang-up business internationally. Numbers out of India are routinely difficult to assess, and particularly when a film does not hail from Bollywood. Based on local information, Tamil sci-fi actioner 2.0 is looking at huge weekend globally (putting it in the company of the recent Baahubali movies). This will be updated as soon as we have more clarity.

  94. Negativity is also part of life. It can be called by other names like competitiveness. When one receives so much negativity, one also wants to give it back to some extent. It is toxic but it also takes away the sting and makes one to move on in life. Sort of therapy.
Otherwise those action dramas will not be so successful. The whistles heard when the hero is bashing the villain again and again.

When I said ‘we’, I also thought that I should not be talking on behalf of others but that ‘we’ indicate some of us in my circle outside this blog.

When Federer beats the other guy, do we feel the pain of the one who was defeated? Not much. Or not at all. That is life.

Have we not seen how one positive person becomes negative because of circumstances? To be positive is good. But to be negative is not that bad sometimes.

Self and some other fans do find the TOH crash to be quite intriguing. It was an ok film that could have become a semi hit. It did not deserve to be totally shamed the way it happened. Critics, many of them, completely compromised and biased, started the campaign called shaming of TOH. Will not forgive Taran Adarsh the trade guide critic who went on and on with his talk against a TOH, right up till third week. Did not care to read gossip columnist critic Masand or that idiot Raja Sen. Did read a decent review from Bhawana Somaaya who gave TOH three stars. And a few foreign reviewers too, fair enough.

When I watched the film, first day, evening, almost the entire hall seemed to be laughing along — though a few people did fiddle with phones. This fiddling with phone happens with the best of films though. When I was watching Manto in September, one guy had an entire conversation on his mobile. What the…😡 Any film, good or bad, deserves viewer’s attention.

After the critical attack, rival fans, assorted politically motivated attackers, all had a go at TOH, leading to domino effect crash. I read of people cancelling tickets, due to bad reports on social media. Don’t you have enough sensibility, awareness through trailer and other material, to have a sense of the film? Of course, the campaign against TOH started right after the release of promos, over a month earlier. The constant reference to Pirates of C…. No, TOH was never an Indian Pirates, save for the look of Firangi, a nod to Jack Sparrow, perhaps, a bit.

TOH debacle was a perfect lesson in how to kill a film.

Thankfully, places without India effect — they are giving the film it’s due.

      ********************

“TOH suffers from unimaginative setup. The movie should have started off showing the Firangi character, his antics and then through him we should have been introduced to the Thugs without any backstory. The reason for their actions and their emotional flashback should have been shared with the viewers only in the second half, and then moving into a change of heart from Firangi and then heading towards the revenge seeking climax. It would have worked significantly better. Imagine a MERSAL or a VADA CHENNAI if the flashbacks portions were narrated right before the titles, what follows would have been boring screenplay offering no excitement whatsoever. What TOH did was something from the 80s and hence paid the price for it.”

Agree, the film should have been called something else — like,Firangi Mallah or Firangi Kahaani, maybe. And perhaps the film title Thugs of Hindostan could have been inspired by the late 18 th century book, Confessions of a Thug — and this is where wrong expectectations came in when you use the word thug, the image conjured up is bloodthirsty highway robbers and killers. Here, you have a film mostly at sea — in every sense of the word😄

Popeye the Sailor, the weathered and quick-with-his-fists cartoon character, is getting a reboot for a series of animated shorts that premiered Sunday on YouTube. The shorts and a new series of comic strips, which will begin in 2019, were created to celebrate the character’s 90th birthday next year.

In the animated series, Popeye is being recast as a more youthful, environmentally resourceful fellow, who lives in a washed-ashore houseboat, collects rainwater and grows his own spinach. Are skinny jeans and kale salads far behind?

“He’s younger, but you can’t tell how old he is,” said C.J. Kettler, president of King Features, which syndicates the “Popeye” strip. “He’s not an old guy, he’s not a young guy; he’s somewhere in between.”

  105. 2.0 (Hindi) Has Excellent Extended Weekend
    Monday 03 December 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) scored a huge Sunday with collections going to around 33 crore nett apprx. The four day weekend of the film is 95 crore nett apprx which is huge number for this film. The families have really come out over Saturday and Sunday..

The film did start slow in some areas on Friday but by Sunday its doing very well across the board. The film is missing business in the South due to the Tamil and Telugu version and if it was a normal Hindi film then it would be a 105 crore nett extended weekend. The ticket prices have also not been hiked for this film like it was for Race 3, Sanju and Thugs Of Hindostan.

The first three day collections of 2.0 (Hindi) are as follows

    Thursday – 20,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 18,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 24,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 33,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 95,25,00,000 apprx

The main worry for a dubbed film is post the first day especially if the dubbed film has a healthy first day number but this film has gone through with flying colors. There is acceptance for the film across all Hindi circuits and now its about the level it holds on the weekdays. A normal Monday hold confirm this film as a HIT. .

The film has also done well in Tamil and Telugu in the South but due to the growth in the Hindi versions it is actually the Hindi version which has performed best..

Note – The all India all format and territory collections will be updated later on.

  106. 2.0 (Hindi) Sets Weekend Record for Akshay Kumar Films
    Monday 03 December 2018 11.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) is the highest Akshay Kumar opening weekend and that too by a distance as it went through the figures of Housefull 3 by a margin. The film was a non holiday release and it had about 10% of the hindi film business missing due to a non release in the South for the Hindi version.

The Akshay Kumar factor is in play in this film as its North India which has out performed for this film. Till date every South dubbed film (be it a success or disaster) has under performed in places like Delhi / UP and East Punjab but here these two markets led the way. On Sunday they had crazy collections of 7.50 crore nett in Delhi / UP and 3.50 crore nett in East Punjab. Bahubali – The Conclusion was universal and performed to huge levels across all Hindi markets. The presence of Akshay Kumar has made a difference to the film across all Hindi markets especially North and Central India.

Bihar and Rajasthan are also huge for a dubbed film with Bihar possibly coming out with an all time record on Sunday for the highest single day in history.

Gold remains the highest opening day of Akshay Kumar but that was a national holiday release. Below are the top ten opening weekends of Akshay Kumar. Normally a film opens on Thursday if it is a holiday on Thursday or Friday but it was not the case here so the regular Fri-Sun weekend is taken for comparison. All are three days.

    1. 2.0 – 75,25,00,000 apprx

    2. Housefull 3 – 53,27,00,000

    3. Rustom – 49,53,00,000

    4. Toilet Ek Prem Katha – 49,09,00,000

    5. Jolly LLB 2 – 47,59,00,000
