ABO has India numbers as 240cr gross for 4 days..it has done around 80cr gross on Sunday…
At the risk of being panned again i will say that IMO the rest of India gross is deflated here. It cannot be 102cr…the net is around 94cr so gross will be around 120cr without 3D glass cost….with glass cost it will be around 125cr+
ABO will put up the worldwide figure by evening…
BW yet to release Tamil numbers

      • I assume you are talking about the lyca numbers. They are very Bollywood centric analyst..they will not have any figures..the Bollywood numbers seem ok…only BW and ABO will question..that too ABO will question only telugu and BW will question Tamil…no one knows the breakup of lyca numbers..even in best case scenario it wont be more than 325cr gross..so Lyca is just throwing random numbers surely

  2. Myselfaamir- regarding your query has any movie collected 450 cr after the first weekend other than bahubali 2 worldwide….I dont think so apart from.secret superstar and dangal…but movies dont usually have 3 languages to gross from like bahubali 2..as I said the only reason why I didnt write off the movie after day 2 was due to the wom..and in a sense there has been an uptick on day 3 and day 4. If it is wrong to be optimistic then I am at fault..but it’s the wom that is reason for optimism not any fandom..

    Like

    • No, your calculation was for the first 4 days and you were saying it wasn’t impossible for 2.0 to get to 800!

      Like

      • It still isnt..its hard but not out of bounds….the wom is quite good..if it has done 300 cr till Sunday which seems to be case then getting 450cr with good trending across the world is not impossible..

        Like

        • Again your calculation is going haywire as to get to 800, it’d require 500 not 450!! Second, the total budget was around 540-550 and if P&A is added, then it’d certainly be North of 600 at the bare minimum, so it would need at the very least 800 to 900 NET not gross to get the hit tag.

  5. I am reposting Jay’s comment here

It’s a joke but it’s obvious people in the industry want it this way. It gives a certain get out of jail free card to them to use whenever they want. I doubt the general public gives a crap too.

This is like Narcos where the cartel have paid off everyone in the system and they are all happy to play along. A few fools like me come along thinking they can help but it’s pointless.

We are all happy with wrong information. The day everyone fights for no tolerance I’ll wake up. But when reasonable folk accept this useless box office system I might as well just stick to watching films instead of giving myself weekly headaches over collections.

I’ll follow China and US. India can keep blasting out it’s corrupted numbers…

  7. On Twitter and in general.

I said during metoo campaign that it was a very poor medium to use. Metoo is practically over from what I can see. If a serious opinion wants to be heard, Twitter is not the medium.

On the flip side, it’s use is growing daily. We all use it here for certain purposes. It’s definitely harmed TOH IMO but not to completely kill it…apparently I did that, not Twitter LOL!

I maintain it is better TOH completely fell like it did than scrabble to 300Cr. Any level of respectability would have given this VKA reason to rejoice, now we can put him to history.

Twitter has it’s uses. People claiming it hasn’t harmed TOH need to wake up soon. Twitter is a multi billion dollar company that is used daily by every media outlet in the world. It is how news travels today or one such way amongst many. It ‘can’ create a fictious view of things. How something so perverse like metoo found it’s way their is beyond me. Film trolling is fine by me. End of the day a good film will survive. TOH didn’t for many reasons other than Twitter.

Enough of my rant, I actually have work to do where my numbers will actually reconcile to a ledger or something!

    • 300 crore would have been as underwhelming for toh as a flop.
Only 400 crore would have given it some respect.

There is still a possibility that chinese may accept it and make Naveen and his new found friends a bit unhappy.

Not yet time for aamir to retire and take up another job!

      • Whatever the number for respectability! Add 10÷ to 300Cr then another 10÷ and another 10÷. We get 400Cr!

All India NETT (All versions) : 229 Cr
All India GROSS : 291 Cr
    Worldwide GROSS : 380 Cr

Hindi version clearly driving the film with over 41% share in collections while on day 1 the Hindi version share was barely 31%. Akshay Kumar seems to be a huge benefactor & biggest gainer from 2.0

  12. Watched Tumbbad. Hands down the best film of the year. As a cinematic experience, it’s right up there with the very best Hindi films ever made. Will write a detailed review later. This film absolutely deserves every single accolade that comes its way.

    • I’ve been prolific this year. Don’t watch more than 3-4 Bollywood films a year in theatre, this year it’s been 7.

      My rank
      Raazi
      Badhaai Ho
      Manmarziyaan
      Sanju
      Hitchki (tv)
      Padmaavat
      TOH
      Veere Di Wedding

I’m happy with that but I would count Narcos 1-3, This Is Us 1-2, Homeland S7, Power 1-5, Bodyguard, Sacred Games, Haunting of Hill House all as more productive use of my time. So TV > cinema this year for me.

Unless Zero is the surprise in a small package I doubt I’ll be adding to my movie list.

Best Hollywood film of year. Mi6 hands down.

Worst experience in theatre Equalizer 2. Zzzzz. Biggest disappointment- no surprises here with TOH.

And I agree the right film will always trump TV but it’s very rare nowadays.

However, much of this still remains my mobile or Laptop hobby watch and not the kinda content that’s made the kind of impact some of the Nolan, Sorcese, David Fincher or Spielberg films made on the big screen.

But that said, TV shows have the best writing in view today. They have the space to expand on content, to provide background stories, elaborate themes etc. So in a way they are richer, in terms of content. And they also need to be visually enticing as well. Sherlock & Sacred Games both are visually very strong.

In a nutshell, unless it’s the work of a great director, I’m not interested in watching it in theatres.

13-14Cr hold is huge here. Only 35% lower than first day is a big hold. First week heading to 140-145Cr here. 200Cr should be very comfortable, possibly inside 2 weeks, certainly by 3rd weekend if the rest of first weeks weekdays hit double digits.

Easily Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser ever- inside EXTENDED ONE WEEK!

This will go past SRK’s biggest ever grosser so pressure on Zero!

    • If this actually opened as per expectations (25-30Cr+) it would have challenged 300Cr, as the WOM is very strong. And really the economics of the film would have been a mute point with no f ups in delays. Genuine blockbuster looks like at least in Hindi.

I’d take Andhadhun as the best Hindi film of 2018

On Hollywood, I’ll take A Quiet Place and Searching above anything else I’ve seen this year. Two great concepts carried out amazingly well!

Bohemian Rhapsody – Great medley of songs and a towering performance from the lead

Incredibles 2 and Coco were both visual delights and very entertaining storylines

But 2.0 is the most fun I’ve had recently watching a Hindi film.

  21. @Rahul, Sanjana – Dangal had a male lead in a non traditional sense. It’s setting was not lavish, the costs are a fraction of 2.0. And coming after Sultan not with a director of Shankar’s pedigree it’s a feat itself.
2.0 is getting Hindi success mainly through Akshay’s visibility. Robot did 20Cr, not bad in 2010. But opening could have been higher. It’s working (without seeing it) I assume on Akshay’s name + content + 3D. It’s not really comparable to Dangal at all. Better to compare with TOH, scale wise or D3, itself a sequel.
2.0 heading to 200Cr+ with no holiday benefit is no joke either, coupled with the split in India suggests more about Rajni’s reducing stardom and Akshay’s gaining. This dynamic others can maybe explain as BB (both) were pan Indian successes, here north is leading the performance, South not – surely that is unusual.

I usually find theatrical experience, with other audience responses, different from watching it on TV/Netflix, etc.
A ranking on films watch in theatre if mixed with films watch on other platform undermines.

Its like saying London is better than Switzerland while visiting London for 1 week and visiting Switzerland only on laptop. Or vice versa.

Such experiences are part of screen play’s vision. There are many scenes created/envisaged/directed just for theatre going audience. Various effects, etc are used which one cannot recognise in other formats.

Hence in my opinion when talking about a movie…say Tanu Weds Manu Returns and if not seen in theatre..then one should specify it. Because the other person who really liked it in a theatre saw a very different cinema than one who watched it another platform.

  27. Thugs Of Hindostan: Why is Aamir Khan Sorry?

Nobody Is Infallible At The Box OfficeHits and flops are an intrinsic part of the show business and an actor, howsoever big, has to take his flops in his stride. The Indian cinema history is replete with examples of the failure of good films, let alone the awful ones.

Film-making is actually a teamwork and no individual should suffer from any pangs of guilt for a movie’s failure. But being Mr Perfectionist and a huge star that he is, Aamir perhaps thinks that he owes an apology to his fans for letting them down. In the past 20 years, more so in the last decade, he has had a reputation as someone who knows the box office like the back of his hand. Thugs of Hindostan, therefore, must have come as a rude shock to him. As a conscientious star, he apparently thought it wise to take “full responsibility” for “not entertaining the audiences”. But in doing so, he is only putting more pressure on himself. Isn’t he?

Aamir should realise that he is an actor and not merely a hit machine. He or his admirers should not expect each of his movies to be a veritable pot of gold. Actually, he should take a leaf out of the book of Salman Khan, who remains unapologetic over the box office fate of his films and claims that even his flops do a business of Rs 150 crore. Or, he should look at the career graph of Naseeruddin Shah, who remains a great actor regardless of the innumerable flops to his credit.

What should Aamir be really worried about is why and how did he err in the selection of the script this time? Thugs of Hindostan, doubtless, had a hackneyed script. He should ponder over it but, at the same time, he should also remember that nobody is infallible in this business where the ultimate arbiter of a movie’s destiny is a fickle audience. Not even someone who strives for perfection in each of his outings!

One became abusive till i intervened.
      Another has become vindictive.
Couple of others have become mournful.
Few are finding fault external to the movie.
Most are justifying the movie even when Aamir accepted that he failed and apologised.

I mean WHY? Are you guys so stupid that you let one fall belittle the amazing run Aamir had since last 10 years via 3 great movies and 3-4 very good movies.

I am not “Only” Amir fan. Unlike few here who pride in sayin “I will not watch that film because it has that “STAR”, i can proudly say i have watched all Aamir’s film in the first weekend despite the WoM. I skippped ToH but will watch it sooner.

But again, for the sake of this portal we should not club people. There are many passionate Amitabh Bachchan fans also. They were very excited about ToH as after Khakhee, this was one movie where BigB was ruling the promos. It got me excited.

Post debacle, i am amazed at the maturity shown by Big B fans. I am sure they are pained. But none of them are vindictive, accusing fans of other stars for sabotaging and noone is abusing.

It is time YOU , yes Y O U learn from them.

      • Ok, since I am one of those who seem to be perpetually speaking up for this beleaguered film, let me explain my stand.

I can and have been critical of Aamir films, the man too.

My liking for TOH is not because of Aamir only. I belong to the minority Aamir mentioned, those who were entertained by the film. The film was patchy, entertaining in parts, stretchy and illogical in parts. But it is NOT the worst ever Hindi film as many are terming it. Both filmi and social media have been saying so. There have been worse films in the recent past, one a hit, since the star is accepted as he is.

Yesterday, I felt like revisiting a song from TOH — Suraiyya. I enjoyed the video, this goofy fun flirty song sequence. Then I made the mistake of reading comments. 95 % had trashed it. Have we all lost any sense of fun? There have been worse comedies in Hindi cinema. I found the song to be an absolute riot, right up to the last bit where Firangi’s wig is jacked off. Loved the chemistry of this pair through the film.

I loved Vashmalle too. My spouse too, is a big fan of this buddy drinking song. Master was horrified that I liked the lyrics and the fact that Amitabh was made to dance. I felt, so what if he had a bit of fun in a role that was mostly fierce and righteous.

I know plenty of fans on fb and twitter (and a couple of silent ones here too), people who are unhappy about the total rejection of TOH. But unlike me, they have been wisely silent too. I guess I should too, if I am not to be laughed at.

Aamir has apologized for not entertaining most of India. He is happy that a section of his India audience liked it.

And people who speak up for ANY film, need to be accepted.

        • I am all for speaking up for the movie one liked.
Just an hour ago i was listening to Suraiyaa. I think it is a wonderful dance song. I wish i had seen ToH and contributed to the reviews. I have remained quiet because i don’t want to say based on other’s opinion/reviews.

My message is for the larger audience.

As fan of the No 1 star, you enjoy many privileges. You have the best box office numbers, some of the most amazingly accepted movies, superb performances, etc. it’s power.

But with power comes responsibility. You cannot use the power provided by your No 1 star to weaponise against No2, no 3…No 10 star. Of course the fans of No 2- No 10 knows that their star if not No 1. These things are obvious. Allow them sometimes to go over the top. Let them enjoy some of the magic.

But never belittle other’s achievement. This way, will make you look bigger. This goes in life as well and not just this portal.

          • I can only speak for myself. I have never belittled any star. It takes passion and team work to make a film, any film. I review books for a paper. Have rarely spoken out completely against any book, even if the book has glaring faults. I point out thefaults as my opinion, but do try to put in a good word. And when I love a book, I champion it, totally. So, thoseinterested : do check out Mohammed Hanif’s latest novel, Red Birds. It is a parable that critiques the US foreign policy in the Middle East. My review has appeared in Sunday Deccan Herald, couple of days back. It is one funny, searing novel that ultimately left me choked up.

  28. Marcus, did you watch 2.0? You talked yesterday something about getting a chance. Whats your view?

    Like

    • Yes, I saw it last night. But nothing much to say about the film. Its not bad nor good, plain average. Its less masala than a regular Shankar film, at least till the point that horrendous 2.0 or 3.0 version of Chitti shows up (and Rajni starts his usual antics). After that it becomes quite intolerable. Rajni was fine in the first half though. But Akshay Kumar has done well (and he shows up in the second half to save it from being a disaster). I think thats the main reason why hindi version is doing relatively better. Akshay deserves all the credit for that.

This film needed to be Rajni nonsense from the get-go to make it really big in TN/Telegu belt. And to make it really big in high-end plexes (like that 227 cr nett for AIW a few months back), it needed to mute Rajni in the second half. So its neither here, nor there – dangling somewhere in the middle.

I think in Hindi it will do 170-175 cr nett and be a plus film. In south its downward trend will continue.

As for visual spectacle, Shankar uses his imagination better than Enthiran. But the vfx execution is not as great as his imagination (probably budget constraints). But maybe good enuf from the kind of vfx exposure that Rajni/Akshay fans usually have.

The best thing about the film is Akshay by a margin. He has a good role, and performs v well. But his ‘message’ gets belittled by 2.0 – quite literally.

        Fine review Marcus

I felt the film was very ambitious in its visual grandeur but the good intentions in its message didn’t translate as well. it hits a high during its post interval flashback involving Dr. Pakshirajan’s story, but enters the ludicrous zone again when it ended.

A robot fighting a man’s aura sounds too outlandish, but I was simply swayed by the tech marvel, and this is where I think Shankar deserves all the appreciation. It also helps that you are never less invested in the film. it works as a grand entertainer, not as a film on paper!

      **************

Will Kedarnath affect the business of Rajinikanth’s 2.0?

Thanks to the presence of debutante Sara Ali Khan and a powerful provocative inter-religious love story as its plot, Kedarnath is all set to be get an impressive opening this Friday. Sources in the know say the beleaguered project which was embroiled in a producers’ conflict has shaped into a love-during-the-time-of-cataclysm tale of epic proportions. The producers RSVP and director Abhishek Kapoor are expecting a heartening opening in spite of Rajinikant and Akshay Kumar stronghold over the box office with 2.0 which opened last Friday.

A source from a leading multiplex chain says they expect a sizeable drop in the 2.0 collections in the coming days. “By the time Kedarnath opens on Friday the theatres, screens and the audience should be satiated with 2.0”

Film & Trade Business analyst Girish Johar says, “Kedarnath has got a very interesting backdrop of the love story set in the Northern Hills of India and one of the most sacred places and temple of the country. It’s a fiction-based love story on the actual cloudburst which led to over flooding there. Sushant Singh Rajput is a fine actor and Sara Ali Khan is a budding new star on the horizon, with decent music, I feel the film should open anywhere near Rs. 5 to 6 crores on its Day 1. Thereafter the content and word of mouth will take it accordingly into the weekend.”

Adds trade analyst Amod Mehra, “Opening should be around Rs. 7/8 crores. In film industry you are known by your last film and both the director as well as the hero had given big flops in their previous films. Despite that thanks to the curiosity of Sara Ali Khan the film’s opening can be decent and earn Rs. 7/8 crores on Day 1.”

Trade expert Atul Mohan adds, “The film has gone through various ups and downs right from inception. And now when it’s finally on the verge of release we are hearing a new controversy about ‘Love Jihad’ arising. In a way all these controversies add to the audiences’ curiosity. The film is a debut vehicle of Sara Ali Khan and she is making all the right pre-release noise with her confidence. Looking at all this I think an opening of Rs. 6-7 crores should be on cards.”

    • THE 5 MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OPENING IN DECEMBER

TWO VERY DIFFERENT SUPERHERO FILMS LEAD A HOLIDAY LINEUP OF BIG BUDGET TENTPOLES AND HISTORICAL DRAMAS.

Even as we enter the final month of 2018, superhero movies continue to draw massive interest, with a member of DC’s Justice League and an alternate version of a Marvel icon topping the list of Decembers most anticipated movies. If you count the Transformers prequel about a certain VW Beetle and Disney’s decades-later sequel to a celebrated classic, then fantastical tales about extraordinary individuals comprise the top four. Toss in a couple of real-life based dramas that tied for the fifth spot, and you’ve got a pretty hefty holiday movie season to look forward to. With that in mind, read on for the Most Anticipated Movies of December!

      1. AQUAMAN (2018)

How do you make a superhero who talks to fish and wears orange spandex cool? Cast Jason “Khal Drogo” Momoa in the role, surround him with people like Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, and Amber Heard, and put the man behind the Conjuring universe in the director’s chair. James Wan’s origin story about DC’s reluctant Atlantean king ranked #1 across all of our social polls and garnered the most Want-to-See votes on RT of any December movie by a wide margin. Aquaman looks primed to rule the box office when it opens right before Christmas, but it’ll face some stiff competition from a few other movies on this list.

      2. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE (2018)

We’ve already gotten three different versions of Peter Parker since the superhero movie boom of the 2000s, but we’ve never seen Miles Morales on the big screen, and if early reviews are any indication, Into the Spider-Verse could be one of the best Spider-Man movies yet. Produced by The Lego Movie and Jump Street franchise’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller (and co-written by Lord), Sony’s animated film made believers out of skeptics with the first trailer, which showcased a unique, vibrant art style with a beating heart at its center. Considering almost all the reviews thus far have been raves, this one looks like a crowd-pleaser.

      3. BUMBLEBEE (2018)

The Transformers franchise has never performed very well with critics (the first film in 2007 is the Freshest at 58% on the Tomatometer), but it has raked in over $4 billion at the box office. With that in mind, this month’s Bumblebee represents a break from formula: It’s a prequel set during the 1980s and centered on just one of the characters, and it’s directed by someone other than Michael Bay (namely Travis Knight). Hailee Steinfeld stars as the human companion this time around, and instead of the more futuristic designs we’ve seen in the franchise thus far, we get robots that more closely resemble the classic Transformers from the TV series. We’ll have to wait and see if the gamble pays off.

      4. MARY POPPINS RETURNS (2018)

The latest in Disney’s efforts to remake, reimagine, or otherwise reintroduce classic films from their extensive library comes in the form of a sequel to 1964’s Mary Poppins. The magical nanny formerly played by Julie Andrews is replaced by Emily Blunt, who returns to Cherry Tree Lane to teach timely lessons to the children of the now grown-up Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw). This one only cracked the top five in our Twitter poll, but it also earned the third most Want-to-See votes on RT.

          • @Jay – I posted the above set of tweets on China release for a reason. And no, it was not to piss off a few people here.

Aamir is taking enough time out from his current work schedule to do a promotional tour for 6 cities and attending a film fest before the china release. That is at least one week of his time. And he is taking another cut of the film to that market.

My point is that he has enuf faith in the film (even after all the bashing and trolling it received in India) to further work on it to make it better (at least they have tried) and is then going all out for China release. That says something, doesnt it? I think he is on the same page as those few of us who have liked the film. I belong to that category and am quite pleased that he obviously feels the same about his 2 years of work.

At least he didnt cancel chinese release after reading your comments. But dont mind that, coz your words are enuf to get our respected blog owner to cancel his tickets.

            Liked by 2 people

          • @Marcus- if he’s on the same page he wouldn’t change the film at all. The point is he has publicly acknowledged the dislike and YRF too so they MUST edit it to give it a chance. It’s the only option if they go for China release, I’ve already been convinced that it is fair to release it so relax. But am cautious about the response and more hopeful than confident.

Satyam would watch the film if he wanted to irrespective of my opinion. So I think you should stop pointing this finger at me. I’ve known him long enough to know one person’s opinion won’t stop him, if anything it will peak his interest more to watch it.

You’re really beyond limits here. My point yesterday was in jest that over confidence after such a huge farce is just pointless, nothing more than that. Instead you’re trying to prove how Aamir likes the film like you do when he’s acknowledged it’s gone wrong. Enough, we’ll know everything we’ll need to know come China release.

          • You are misreading everything. Firstly plz revisit aamir’s interview. He apologized to those like u who did not like the film. Then he thanked a minority like me who liked the film. Then he acknowledged the trolls saying everyone has the right to say stuff against the film. And he said that although the film did not work for majority of indian audience, he is still looking fwd to china release in dec. Is this not clear enuf?

The passion you have for Chinese collections is incredible and you should contact Aamir khan productions and tell them you can help in marketing in China or work with them when the deal will be going on, etc. You know all the details than anyone else sitting in that discussion room. Then you can take to be the lead coordinator for all Bollywood film releases in China. There is full requirement for a specialist now in Bollywood and oldies can’t fill this spot. Take this suggestion seriously.

While Aamir opened the gate, the humongous success of smaller films like SS, Hindi Medium and Hichki has given confidence to the Chinese distributor to look at other films now and tie up with Indian counterparts. I wish this doesn’t become a one way street.
I would like to see mainstream chinese movies releasing in India too dubbed in local languages. The success of Jungle book and Avengers shows the acceptance in India towards international films dubbed in local languages.

Mumbai: Twinkle Khanna, who produced Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman, said on Friday that there were many people who questioned her decision to back a movie which supported the cause of menstrual hygiene. Padman is inspired by the life of Tamil Nadu-based Arunachalam Muruganantham, who created affordable sanitary napkins for the women of his village.

The film, directed by R Balki, had Akshay playing the central character. It is based on the short story, “The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land” from Twinkle’s book “The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad”. “When I started making the film, a lot of people said, ‘Are you crazy? Who is going to watch a film on menstruation? People don’t talk about it.’ That was the challenge- to find people who would be ready to finance a film like this.

“As a team, we were determined and we realised the impact (of the film) as the government announced that they are installing sanitary pads vending machine at railway stations and there was an impact on the GST. We did play a small part in bringing that about,” Twinkle said at an event here.

The film, which released in January this year, earned over Rs 100 crore at the box office. Twinkle, 43, has been roped in as an artiste ambassador by Save the Children, a leading Child Rights NGO in India, to champion the cause of adolescent health and menstrual hygiene.

Twinkle on Friday visited the slum area in Govandi to interact with adolescents, who are part of Save the Children and its partner agency Apnalaya in creating awareness.

“I created awareness through columns and a movie. We needed to do a ground work and it was great to be a part of Save the Children. Also, we got to know that 20 per cent of school girls drop out because they hit puberty and they do that because of the taboo around menstruation. They do not have access to low-cost sanitary pads.”

Citing the example of a 12-year-old girl from South India, who committed suicide after she was reprimanded by her teacher as her uniform was stained, Twinkle said there is a need to change the mindset.

“It was gratifying to see what they (Save the Children and Apnalaya) did in Govandi, they were not only educating girls but boys also. That is important as we live in a patriarchal society, where men are controlling the household.”

2.0 (Hindi) dropped 15% on Tuesday which is a bit more than the regular 10% for a big film on a Tuesday but its was the sixth day here instead of the fifth day. The film has collected over 120 crore nett in six days and the first week (seven days) is looking to be around 130 crore nett.

This 120 crore nett for 2.0 in Hindi is without South so real value is around 135 crore when compared to other Hindi films. Its still about the Friday which will tell where the film is going and there will be a some competition from Kedarnath which will get a good release though collections will be another matter and will depend on the film. .

The first three day collections of 2.0 (Hindi) are as follows

    Thursday – 20,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 18,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 24,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 33,25,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 13,50,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 11,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,20,25,00,000 apprx

The southern versions of the film dropped less in Bangalore though Hyderabad was in a similar range to the Hindi version.

Note – The all India collections will be updated later on.

It needs to do 31-32 cr in second weekend like Golmaal did, in order to get to that 200 cr milestone. And it has Kedarnath as competition. Doable IMO.

2.0 grossed continues with strong collections all over with business of 24 crore nett which takes the film to over 280 crore nett. The film is doing record or near record business in the big centres of Tamil nadu and Kerala. The smaller centers are less but are very steady and will have good runs.

Bahubali – The Conclusion is the highest all India NETT grosser at 1115 crore and that is impossible to touch but it will easily become the second highest NETT grosser ever as it beats the 418 crore nett of Bahubali – The Beginning. The 500 crore nett mark will also prove to be a step too far due to the flow of releases in December.

The first six day NETT collections 2.0 across India are as follows.

The pan Indian business is not spectacular at all. If it’s not getting to BB2 Hindi business (that’s a decent enough target) than the South markets didn’t do as well as expected. Basically it’s beating BB1 all India net with a shot at BB2 Hindi net. (This paragraph based on BOI report posted by Sanjana).

        • It is indeed shocking that Akshay had to wait for so long to cross 135 Cr barrier. I will blame his choices as well as lack of good directors for his kind of cinemas.

Good action films have always done well. However since last 10-15 years, Hindi cinema has lacked good action directors.

If we look at last few good action movies- Wanted, Ghajini, Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore…all were remakes of South India movies. Last solid director were Rajiv Rai (Tridev, Mohra, Gupt, etc.) and Raj Kumar Santoshi (Khakee, Ghayal, Ghatak) and occasional Anil Dharma and JP Dutta. This really impacted Akshay who was grooming towards the action hero. All these core action film directors faded because they couldn’t reinvent.

On the contrary we had directors making mushy good romantic feel good movies which helped other stars like SRK, Salman, etc. They needed softer looking heroes with chocolaty looks. Rajshree, Chopras and Johars made them big stars.

It again needed a director from South india to push Akshay’s BO boundary. I doubt if this boundary is going to be breached any time soon. The North Indian directors just don’t know the masala actioner genre.

          • I don’t watch the South films but if we compare the north and stuff like Wanted, Ghajini, Dabangg, RR all of which I liked then for sure the talent for this kind of genre is in the South. One day hopefully North, South distinction is not having to be mentioned at all!

            Like

          • The likes of Santoshi, Rajiv Rai, Anil Sharma and JP Dutta really excelled with action dramas. They made action films for the northern audience.

Santoshi combined drama and action well and the rythm in his films got relentless once during the second half. Rajiv Rai made big action films in a thriller format. The edting was crisp, the scenes were kept short and the films moved at a breakneck pace with VIju Shah’s BG score accompanying it. Sharma and Dutta like patriotic films, laced with flash-backs, emotions and love stories but they were good with large scale action scenes. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to re-invent themselves.

The kind of action films being done these days is more the kind of action inspired from south films.

I don’t think Akshay Kumar is doing enough action films. You have to go back to the days Gabbar, Baby and Holiday for those last action movies. For an actor who does 3 or 4 films a year and who is so good at action, it is puzzling why he stays away from action deals.

Even when Masala films started working during the times of Ghajini, Wanted and Dabangg, he waited for too long before doing an action film.

          • Rahul, Few relevant thoughts from you as always.

“I don’t think Akshay Kumar is doing enough action films. ”

Trie and it is sad, but not Akki’s fault. He was not getting good scripts in core action or event in action comedy genre.
He was approached by Lyca for Kaththi remake which would have been a good hit with him. But instead he chose 2.0
There are not many action film scripts that are coming.
Now he is being offered historicals with lot of action scenes. He will consider on of those…however its coming too late now with his age. He should have got these offers when in his 30s and 40s.

Movies like Tashan, CCTC, Blue, Boss etc just blew away the opportunity to give Action comedy genre with Akki. Foreign studios never came with technologies..they just put money on the stars. YRF made few actioners but they only promoted directors like Victor who made Dhoom series or Kabir Khan. They never really looked out to make actioner in true sense.
UTV delved more on new age stories which was easier to make with evolving sensibilities of Indian audience. Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap wasted their talent in chasing girls rather than scripts. Entire 2000s got wasted as far as good action comedy films are concerned. Priyadarshan, Sunil Darshan, Vipul Shah and Niraj Pandey couldn’t make bigger and better films with Akshay despite getting biggest hits of their career from Akshay. They all used Akshay and gained but never really evolved themselves to return the favour.

In a caustic article published on The Cut website on Tuesday, actress Priyanka Chopra has been called a “modern-day scam artist” with whom husband Nick Jonas shares a “fraudulent relationship against his will”. Chopra and Jonas, an American musician, got married in Jodhpur on December 1. The article, written by journalist Mariah Smith, is titled “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?” – and attempts to prove that it is not. The article also portrays Chopra as a money-minded celebrity who calculatingly married the unassuming Jonas as a power move.

The Cut is a website that is brought out by the New York magazine, which is owned by New York Media LLC. Its “About Us” section describes The Cut as a “premier destination for women with stylish minds” that covers “politics, feminism, work, money, relationships, mental health, fashion and issues relating to equality”.

The 2,100-word article was roundly panned on social media from people across the globe. Social media users also criticised the piece as being racist and sexist because it accuses Chopra of trying to rise in the ranks in Hollywood by marrying an American celebrity, ignoring the fact that she has been a major star in India since 2003.

So 2.0 is really going to have to do something special overseas here IMO in the Asian belt.

Other languages seems flop. Overseas haven’t followed. If Padman scores, it might be Akshay Kumar who emerges after Aamir in China as #2. And of course 2.0 will arrive in May19.

When one is done with long vacation and getting back to routine lives people tend to not go to movie in same week. It was a stupid decision to not release it after 2 weeks of TOH and wait for 3 weeks.

          Like

          • Hindsight is wonderful. If they knew TOH would be a disaster they would know. But I suspect they expected it to run for 3 weeks. These big releases can’t advertise a date and change it so nimbly and just for US market alone?

            Liked by 1 person

          • My point is till now any big movie releases gap is 2 weeks. No one did 3 weeks and they went out of the way to create 3 weeks gap also sacrificing overseas collection and huge holiday. It was not a hindi film alone and they would have gained enough collections from other languages. Even TOH is blockbuster, 90% of the collection would have come in those 2 weeks and that is usually enough gap.

            Like

          • True they probably should have come earlier. Once you lock that date, preponing an already costly film is difficult I’d imagine. They certainly would have taken US market by storm.

          • Anyway next time round Aamir won’t get the benefit of the doubt or luxury of 3 weeks. Even Salman only got 2 weeks for Race 3 before Sanju release. So Aamir can expect some immediate competition going forward. Unless its Mahabharata or something like that where all bets are off. But if he did Mogul I could easily imagine direct competition on same day as his bubble has burst now.

If it’s Netflix he can avoid all this drama.

300+ nett in 7 days. However, 500 is far fetched as per BOI. No ways can 2.0 ever be called anywhere near a HIT if the final all India nett collections in all versions combined is <500 Cr.

  68. The likes of Karan Johar & now Excel Entertainment are behaving like pimps. Dubbing every single big budget extravaganza from down south and arm twisting exhibitors to give them a 4000+ screen release while the dubbed versions of well accepted Hindi films like Dangal, Padmaavat & Bajirao barely get 200 screens upon release in Tamil & Telugu. I’d rather have these corporate czars produce some similar big screen extravaganzas in their own industry and attempt to get a 2000+ screen release for their dubbed versions down south. Every Telugu or Tamil movie is not a Baahubali as 2.0 has proved, for which the Hindi version is the only saving grace thanks to its bi-lingual nature and Akshay’s presence.

Not sure how many Hindi movies have done that…Apart from Bahubali1 and 2 what other movie was dubbed and released in Hindi? The scale of 2.0 deserves a wide release like this.
Someone had posted the list of big movies releasing next year – many of them are South. The scale and vision at which they are working now these Bollywood directors are not yet matching..

      • How many screens did the likes of Bajirao, Padmaavat and Dangal get for their dubbed versions in TN and AP? Dangal was a masterpiece that got a cult following even in China while the dubbed versions accumulated a mere 12 Cr nett, thanks to low screen count, lack of awareness and perhaps lack of interest among the south audience (outside of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vizag etc) to witness the film. Even today, >70% of the highest grossing Indian films worldwide are from the Hindi film industry with Rajamouli and Shankar being the only film makers to have broken through. As for 2.0, its almost half a Hindi film with the bilingual dialect and Akshay’s presence leading to a solid initial in the core Hindi film markets. If the likes of BB and 2.0 get 4000+ screens for their dubbed versions, its high times distributors and exhibitors in the Telugu and Tamil movie market reciprocate the same for dubbed Hindi films, for it to be a more valid comparison. Despite all the grandeur, 2.0 might manage a little over 450 Cr from 7000+ screens, a pale comparison to even Padmaavat which amassed 300 Cr+ from just about 4000 screens. Forget Dangal’s 387 nett (gross would be a lot more).

    2 hits – JollyLLB2, HF3
    1 semi hit – Gabbar
    1 average – Baby
3 Flops – Singh is Bling, Brothers, Shaukeens.

The only dubious one there is Baby where there was a difference of nearly 10cr between BOI and Taran’s figures.

Gold at around 105cr net probably just about broke even. It is the worst trending film of the lot (along with Singh is Bling).

Padman may be average/above average due to the low costs.

    • Ouch…did i say 12? I must have quoted from some news portal.
i was more referring to this list of last 3 years-

      2016 Airlift
      2016 Housefull 3
      2016 Rustom
      2017 Jolly LLB 2
      2017 Naam Shabana
      2017 Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
      2018 Pad Man
      2018 Gold
      2018 2.0

Padman is my most favourite movie here. I don’t know but somehow the entire social entrepreneurship struck some kind of cord with me.

It not always we come across films like these from mainstream actors. I can understand a Rajkumar Rao or Ayushmann doing it at the beginning of their career. But some with a strong image like Akshay Kumar, completely going out of the way and doing this act was nice to see.

Right from start to end, he actually lived the life on reel of Real life Padman ‘Arunachalam Muruganantham’.

The care he showed for his wife, for other women in family and getting obsessed to make an affordable Sanitary Pad so much so that he shunned hesitation( imagine the movie was based on years of late 90s, when even the word menstrual cycle was not uttered by women even, forget men).

His inner desire to do good was seen in his small successes and failures and experiments. Eventually, succeeding thereby giving powerful message to all in general about never loosing hope. Keep trying.

More so, he refused to take the help of translator in a conference at United Nations (in the film) and tried to connect in “Linglish”( watch the film for this).

So, this movie is a must watch if one is really inclined towards issue based films in which he/she don’t get bored rather understand the emotions and can connect with the scene.

If you just want entertainment from this film, I think that would be a great disrespect to cause for which this film has been made. Although, at times it will bring cheers of joy as well.

Hence, must watch and take home the message of breaking the shackles of taboos imposed (like not to talk about sanitary napkins) and other such taboos also.

As for taking Kareena as example, it is because she is the latest celebrity. Yes, Aamir did have two marriages with hindu women and they are also called love jihad on the internet and so also Srk’s. I am also deeply disturbed by this trend.

For the sake of the film, I hope the makers must have taken into consideration all these things.

Padmaavat was also bashed for insinuating something between the villain and the heroine though it was one sided.

And Reema and Kiran were not known as Reema Khan or Kiran Khan. If one converts just for the sake of pleasing the husband, it is not correct. If one converts out of conviction, it is different.

  71. Entertainment was a flop. Producers of Baby were probably over-reporting but the difference was abnormally high with something like BOI’s 82cr to Taran’s 93-94cr. I think the truth may lie in the middle range. But still, I would not call the film a hit. Maybe above average at best.

I may be wrong but I think Aamir most probably has the best run with a string of winners before TOH. Varun Dhawan has very few under-performers as well in his short career.

  73. 2.0 Box Office Collections: Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar film needs to earn Rs 600 crore, says analyst; here’s why

2.0 Box Office Collection: Directed by S Shankar and sequel to Robot, rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 has already crossed Rs 400 crore mark worldwide. The film’s entry into the Rs 200 crore (worldwide gross) club in the opening weekend is itself a feat for Indian films. However, made with a huge budget of over Rs 550 crore, the film has now entered into its second week and has already registered slow growth on the box office.

2.0 film collection day 1 (India market) stood at Rs 74 crore. Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 has now marked Rs 425 crore gross collection worldwide.

“The film has earned Rs 135 crore net in 6 days in South India while it has earned Rs 119 cr net in northern belt. Though it has done a good business in Tamil Nadu, its performance at Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala box offices have not been up to the mark. Its gross India collection now stands at Rs 310 crore after 6 days,” told film critic and trade analyst Sumit Kadel to ZeeBiz.Com.

Kadel said that the film’s net overseas earning stood at Rs 115 crore. The film’s worldwide gross collection now stands at Rs 425 crore.

Sumit said that despite its good weekend performance, the film may not get the ‘Hit’ tag.

“The film needs minimum Rs 600 crore to get a ‘Hit’ tag. The film’s lifetime India collection may be around Rs 350-380 crore. It’s a hit in Hindi belt but a clear flop in South given the huge making budget,” said Kadel.

Kadel said that even if its global earning is taken together, the film’s performance is not up to the expectations.

“The film was released on around 12000 to 15000 screens globally. Lyca Productions have sold it to distributors/theatre owners at a very high price in India. Neither its South India collection nor its global collection justifies it as a ‘Hit’ film,” said Kadel.

The film has earned Rs 26 cr net (all languages) on Monday and Rs 20 crore net (all languages) on Tuesday in India. Given the working week, the film’s earning may only see a decline going ahead. It’s now up to the movie lovers to classify the movie as a ‘Hit’ or ‘Flop’ as the analyst verdict is already out now.

    • I beg to differ on Shankar. On Rajni, probably yes.
But Shankar benefited from 2.0. He made a movie which will at min recover the cost for the makers. Remember the cost doubled and this movie was never meant to be 500Cr. It was made for 300Cr.
Not many big movies can recover if the cost gets doubled in the making.
So Shankar will be mighty pleased. He bailed out the producers here. Audience has hailed 2.0 has Shankar’s film more than Rajni or Akshay. What more can one want. He is getting more credit than what Nitesh Tiwary got from Dangal.

      • Sanjana, I’m surprised to see someone like you using these terms so lackadaisically! The whole bogeyman behind ‘Love Jihad’ claims that it is an act of terrorism that forcibly and tortuously converts Hindu women to Islam. Does that in any way apply to Kareena, who is one of the most confident and least inhibited married heroines working in Indian cinema today and who shot afilm like Veere Di Wedding while pregnant? Would you call your favourite star Aamir’s marriage(s) to Hindu women love jihad?

Even if she did convert, which she obviously didn’t, I don’t see how that can be automatically termed terrorism (if there is a forcible and abusive conversion it is a totally different issue). India is a deeply patriarchal country where most married women are still expected to leave their family and customs and adopt their husband’s family and customs as their own. Why is it perfectly OK if, say, a Jain woman marries a Punjabi man in a Sikh ceremony and proceeds to cook meat for him despite having being vegetarian all her life (something I’ve seen happen in my social circle and be accepted without much comment) but not if a Hindu woman does so for a Muslim man?

Most of my non-Indian friends would be astonished by the fact that a married woman in India is expected to live with and attend to her husband’s parents, adapt completely to their way of life and ask them for permission for many simple things (which still happens in a large number of households) and term such relationships cruel and exploitative. Would you be willing to accept such a blanket label on all Indian marriages? Why then would you casually use the term Love Jihad to refer to all Hindu woman-Muslim man relationships?

I agree with what you say.

However what I wanted to point out was

            A) You can’t call a woman adopting her husband’s customs terrorism when it is basically a traditional expectation that is common across ALL religions in India

            B) you can’t generalise all Hindu-Muslim marriages as love jihad just like (obviously) you can’t generalise all Indian marriages as oppressive and exploitative

            C) it is hypocritical for Indian society to object to a woman adopting her husband’s customs on an inter-religious level alone when they are perfectly accepting of it (and in fact expect it) in all other cases

Aamir and Srk. Their marriages are also called love jihad on internet.

Kareena’as example was the recent one. So I took that name.
I used that term because that is how these marriages are looked by many. Though I dont support this.

And why you are bringing your favourite aamir? That is not required. Kareena is also my favourite and I supported her many times on this blog.

When I used that term, it was in reply to the film being called a love jihad them ed one. So my reply was in the same coin.

Have not watched the KWK episode with Saif and Sara. Not watching too many of Karan’s ’s show these days. Watched the Aamir episode, only, to be honest; since he is a favourite. I forgive his occasional stupidities.

I loved watching Aamir and cousin Nuzhat in Komal Nahata’s show. Never cheesy, good fun. Also liked Komal’s show with Katrina and the TZH director, Ali Abbas Zafar. The director comes across as a thoughtful guy with a quiet sense of humour. And Katrina too came across as a fun person. She seems to have loosened up over the years.

Sara comes across as a bright young kid. Watched her in two interviews, one with Anupama and another one. Good for her, getting all these chances to showcase herself before her films release. Wish other newbies could get such opportunities.

Having said that, Sara is a refreshing change from Bollywood’s interchangeable model-turned-actress assembly line. I watched KWK for the first time in a very long time for her and I thought she handled Saif’s boorishness with maturity and humour. He came across as a terrible, immature father and had none of the royal sophistication that he tried hard to project; his daughter at 25 was far more dignified!

    • Intercaste marriages are not accepted, forget inter religious ones.
When we warm up to intercaste marriages, half the problem will be solved.
Marriages should be left to the boy and girl. But films like DDLj propagate marriage with the consent of the family which rarely happens. It happens only in films. That is why a Sairat is celebrated for bringing out the raw realities to the fore.

    • This is true! Unlike other countries (not just in Europe but also in Asia and Africa) where such rigid norms have eased away with time and with increase in income/ cultural exposure they have managed to stubbornly persist in India. I read an illuminating survey about how rare inter-caste marriage still is and how little it is growing with time but I can’t find it now.

I think the rich are some of the most caste and status conscious people and put even more pressure on their children to make strategic alliances that benefit them and make them look good within whichever business community they belong to. And there are many cases of rich families intimidating, abusing and even killing the ‘unsuitable’ grooms their daughters chose.

In that sense, Bollywood and it’s many fluid inter caste/ religion (and now interracial marriages) are a rare and welcome beacon of cosmopolitanism in the country. And before people say it’s only one-sided, let’s not forget that Sussane Roshan married Hrithik and Soha married Kunal Khemu, for instance.

  97. Where Does The Credit Of The Hindi Version Of 2.0 Go
    Thursday 06 December 2018 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

    Q. Where does the credit go for the Hindi version of 2.0 you have said Akshay Kumar as its dubbed but Bahubali – The Conclusion with no stars did even bigger so its the content of the film really and not Akshay Kumar?

    Shahid Butt

    A. See obviously when a film works in the long run then its content. The point that was made is that till date all dubbed films released in Hindi markets have been driven by Mumbai circuit. Bahubali – The Conclusion is the only exception which had business which was uniform but that had huge brand value by the time it released. Even the first Bahubali film had 50% business from Mumbai on day one. 2.0 was being led by Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar and this is where Akshay Kumar has a strong market so its not hard to work out that he is the reason why this dubbed film behaved differently.

    Q. I would just like to point out to you that Rajnikant may have been a big star five years ago in Tamil Nadu but now younger stars have taken over and lead at the box office in Tamil Nadu and it could be that your calculations are wrong and the Tamil Nadu trade is spot on and 13 crore is the first day gross for 2.0.

    S. Kurusar

    A. You may be right and there may be bigger younger stars due to the age factor but we are not really going into who is the biggest star in Tamil Nadu as you may know better. Filmwatchers there will have a good idea of that. Even if others have taken over nobody can take away the fact that Rajnikant as been huge in TN since 1980 which is a long time to be at the at top or now near the top as you put it. As for box office numbers it does not matter who is number one or number two as you compare collections and not stars.

It is difficult to make too many comments against another industry as our mailbox will be flooded that its boxofficeHINDI and not boxofficeINDIA as has happened before. Lets just say there is an issue with reporting, as figures going around do not match cinema collections which is the only way to track box office as its done across the world. It seems that figures are worked through shares when shares should be worked out from the collections and a lot extra is lumped on day one but that extra does not seem to be the same for all films. There was a Tamil film released on Diwali and the GROSS figures going around for that was 33 crore and for 2.0 it was 13 crore but from actual cinema numbers this is impossible. There are limited cinema DCR’s (daily collections reports) in Tamil Nadu but the ones which are there were at best 60% in favour of the Diwali release but then some were the same. But the reported GROSS figures are almost 300% more for the Diwali release. It is the same state so you are not going to have films collecting similar at some places and then 200-300% gap in others. The only way this sort of gap comes is when the release size is lopsided or a huge difference in screenings at places which should not be the case here as 2.0 itself is a huge film. There are a lot more cinema collections after the week is out so a better judgement can be made but looking at what cinema collections are available at present it is certain that if the Diwali release was 33 crore then 2.0 is not 13 crore and if 2.0 is 13 crore then the Diwali release is not 33 crore. This even a five year can make out by comparing cinema numbers. The industry should come out of tracking through shares as it will always be off as far as actual collections go. The real cinema data for Tamil Nadu is limited on a daily basis but a much wider sample is available when the week is out so if the analysts in the state have the access and work through them then there will be more realistic numbers. This is just an observation from the outside and not about Hindi film industry being better than the Tamil industry.

    • Weighted average opening day credit model…

      Hindi
Shankar 30% – sequel, TV factor
Akshay Kumar 50% – Hindi star
Rajni 20% – opened Robot to 5Cr? And has minimal stardom in North

      South, all versions…
Shankar 45%, Rajni 45% – both driving the collections down South
Akshay 10% – the residual South business lost by having less Hindi prints replaced by regional versions.

Akshay’s all India contribution 10Cr (50% of opening day, North) + 10% of regional net whatever that is (64-20 = 44*10% = 4.4Cr, South). Opening day = 14.4Cr for Akshay, considering it’s Thursday that’s decent enough.

I had pointed this out that I have never seen such a thing in kollywood before and i have followed this market now for over 7 years…the BW numbers also indicate that Chennai was higher for 2.0…I can understand post day 1 the smaller towns didnt go for 2.0 due to WOM..but on day 1 a rajni Shankar movie releasing wide and doing better in Chennai but not in TN doesnt make any sense..and it’s not that it was falling short by 1 cr…it was a good 17cr lower than sarkar for day 1…I have raked my brains on this and have left at that as there is obviously no way to know the real number..but that day 1 TN number still rankles me whenever I think of it..quite bizarre that BOI also talked about the same thing.

    Thursday 06 December 2018 15.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 had GROSS of 362 crore apprx in India in seven days with the Hindi markets contributing around 47% of the all India business. This should eventually go over to around 50%. The contribution of Bahubali – The conclusion was 46% for the Hindi markets but that is because the home market of Bahubali – The Conclusion (Andhra) has bigger potential than the home market of 2.0 (Tamil Nadu)

If the film is right than the Hindi markets do add to these South Indian films. Only five South Indian films have crossed 300 crore worldwide and all have Hindi releases. Obviously the South films cant be the normal films about a youth in Hyderabad or Chennai be it action or love story genre but if the scale is bigger and does not give the feel of regionality then there is potential for business in Hindi markets.

2.0 will hit the 500 crore mark worldwide it its extended first week with figures standing at 480 crore apprx in seven days. The break down of the India GROSS business in week one is as follows..

Hindi Markets – 170 crore (including Tamil and Telugu versions playing in Hindi circuits)

    Tamil Nadu – 75 crore

Nizam / Andhra – 64 crore (Not including Marathawada which is a part of this circuit for the regular Hindi film. For this film Marathawada has been put in Hindi markets).

    Karnataka – 36 crore

    Kerala – 17 crore

    TOTAL – 362 crore

    The ratios are as follows

    Hindi Markets – 46.96%

    Tamil Nadu – 20.72%

    Nizam / Andhra – 17.68%

    Karnataka – 9.94%

    Kerala – 4.70%

    • According to wiki

It is a region of the Indian state of Maharashtra. The region coincides with the Aurangabad Division of Maharashtra. It borders the states of Karnataka and Telangana, and it lies to the west of the Vidarbha and east of Khandesh regions of Maharashtra. The largest city of Marathwada is Aurangabad. Its people speak Marathi and Dakhini.

The term Marathwada means the house of Marathi people, that is land occupied by the Marathi-speaking population of the former Hyderabad state during the period of Nizam rule. The term can be traced to 18th century state records of the Nizam of Hyderabad.

How I stereotypically dirade every indian serial as one which is my ignorance is how many think of indian films. Admitting to liking indian films can be seen as uncool. Just my experience. So even my white friend who loves cricket and curries laughs at the synopsis of Lagaan. Just like how I laugh at how in general Caucasian parents kick their kids out of their homes or ask for rent, generally a lot of taboo is attached with indian films.

I’ll even extend this to India as a tourist destination. It’s criminal how many people I’ve met who shudder at the thought of going to India because of stories they’ve heard. India doesn’t do marketing well enough. It’s a magical country and films are much more guilty pleasures and acquired tastes for many 20-30 somethings. I have a huge family…some 30 first cousins. They’ll all know Bachchan or SRK. Ask them the last major film they saw from India and how, I reckon it will be TV and not cinema for 90% of them. If it’s not culturally interwoven for NRI, expecting non NRI is a distant dream.

I’ve lived in Munich for 6 months…my means to watch an indian movie was to join a club (embarrassing enough whilst living with an Irish guy) and watching a film every now and then. Otherwise it’s a very small market. This idea that foreign people watch Indian films in vast sums is nothing more than a dream, dreamt up by SRK fans in mid 2000’s that Germany, Austria etc is full of SRK fans.

These markets still are driven in the main by NRI’s, more than likely your infosys, genpact indian offshore/onshore employees of big companies. Not your traditional Caucasian Brazilian, German friends. Only in London or major American cities will you see a wider demographic and even this is like 1-2%, rest will be of indian origin.

This is why China, Japan, Malaysia etc are so interesting to understand for indian producers. Also parts of Africa, Turkey etc. These are on the whole demographic of people with situations similar to Indians so films will more likely resonate their.

Growth in UK is over. So many Indians now it can’t grow more. The only other option is stuff like Slumdog Millionaire where India co produces stuff like this with West to entice audience in. Otherwise what you see is a very niche market that is pretty much negligible unless we talk of China.

US has growth but it seems here the South Indian movies are seeing it not Bollywood.

Bottom line it’s not a country that has been prolific in producing quality cinema in the eyes of the non Indians. Some of it is ignorance, some truth, some pure disinterest in song and dance.

Even these European countries’ cinema is hardly much more popular. At least Indian films release in UK in huge volumes. Street shops sell dvds in volumes. 105. Although a tad too late, yet today I have finally managed to watch TOH. And Aamir fans might be upset at me for my opinion on it and his acting but still i’ll go ahead and say TOH to be ‘worse’ than ‘Mela’!! It might sound sacrilegious to Aamir fans but I consider Dhoom 3 to be infinitely better than TOH. What did Aamir see in such a ‘horrendous’ script including his role which was just too mechanical and devoid of any shade whatsoever as i was really flabbergasted by the movie, its ‘infantile’ premise, unimaginative screenplay and horrible dialogues despite going with very low expectations after all the bashings the movie received.

And biggest shock for me is that Aamir spent 2 years on such a piece of garbage which has nothing at all, not a single saving grace in the entire movie. It is made in such a Haphazard manner as if the entire script was written just in the wake of Bahubali’s phenomenal success without any deep thought going into it. There was nothing in the story which could justify the first time coming together of 2 legends of Indian film industry, just an absolutely wasted opportunity by YRF, VK Acharya and Aamir himself as such opportunities don’t come time and again. One thing i have deduced from the debacle of TOH is that Aamir does not have a grip on ‘fantastical’ stuff as is evident from his past failures in Mela as well. He has an exceptional gift of dealing in human drama and stories which are human, real and relatable which is evident by his stellar films which revolve mostly around these basic themes. This purple patch had to come to an end sooner or later as it was too long a period for any artist not to undergo failure of any sort since Mela in 2000!! But i hope and wish this setback will motivate Aamir to come back with a bang as he did in 2001 by coming up with 2 all time classics in the form of Lagaan and DCH.
